Families enjoy Marklund games

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Rilee Vest leaned over Kate, a resident of Marklund at Mill Creek, and encouraged her to roll the ball one more time.

“Come on,” Vest, 21, of Elburn said, but Kate had had enough. She was done with all the exercises of the facility’s 28th annual Marklund Summer Games, held Saturday on its campus in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva.

Marklund provides housing and services for developmentally disabled infants, children and adults.

Its Geneva campus is for adults. Marklund does not provide last names for its clients.

Vest, a special education student and her brother, J.R. Vest, 18, were among 300 volunteers who helped out in the Marklund version of the Special Olympics.

Spokeswoman Dawn Lassiter-Brueske said 100 clients, including 96 residents and four day clients who participated in the various adaptive games, all with the help of family, staff and volunteers.

“Our clients have such profound developmental disabilities, that they cannot participate in Special Olympics, they have to be assisted – so we basically created our own,” Lassiter-Brueske said.

“We had a baseball game, games and activities on every one of our patios of the residential homes as well as indoors,” Lassiter-Brueske said. “We had some walking races and wheelchair races.

Everything is assisted with help of volunteers.”

Other than staff, most volunteers who participated were from Christ Community Church in St. Charles, Lassiter Brueske said.

Coroner: No heart attack or stroke before fatal crash

“It’s very important because it brings all the families and volunteers together in one place annually,” Nelson said. “It’s a fun event for the clients here at Marklund.

And it gives the opportunity of sharing and being together as families.”

After the games, clients, volunteers, guests and families joined in a cookout,

including Jim and Diane Jacobsen of Chicago, who were visiting their daughter, Kristen, 20, who lives at Marlklund.

“Kristen’s only lived here a year, so this is our first time,” Diane Jacobsen said.

“It’s great getting to see her and getting involved with the different events. ... It’s a great time to come out and have family and friends.”

Jim Jacobsen said activities like this are important for his daughter.

“So she can get out and see other people and interact with a lot of different environments and different things that they have,” he said.

The family of Felicia Gore of Joliet agreed with the Jacobsen’s assessment.

Gore’s son Randy, 24, who is developmentally disabled, still lives at home with her, she said.

But her sister, Tamisha Morris, 34, lives at Marklund.

Gore’s daughter, Amber, 18, and Tamisha’s mother, Corine Pitchford, also of Joliet, came to the event.

And though he did not participate in the games, Randy enjoyed watching them.

“I’m having fun,” Randy said.

“It’s very important because it brings all the families and volunteers together in one place annually. It’s a fun event for the clients here at Marklund. And it gives the opportunity of sharing and being together as families.”

SUGAR GROVE – An autopsy for Geneva electric superintendent Michael Buffington, who died in a car crash late Thursday in Sugar Grove, did not show anything definitive outside of the trauma of the accident, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

“He did not have a heart attack or a stroke,” Russell said, something that precipitated the crash.

Russell said the coroner’s office would wait for a preliminary toxicology report in two weeks Michael and a complete Buffington report in four weeks after that to try to determine whether there were other factors that led to the crash. The autopsy was done at DuPage County because of the recent closure of the Kane morgue because of mold.

Geneva’s city flag has been lowered to half-staff at all facilities in honor of Buffington.

In a statement released this weekend, city leaders and police have reached out to the Buffington family to provide any assistance during this time. No funeral arrangements have been determined, officials said.

The city also provided grief counselors for employees to help cope with the news of Buffington’s death.

“With the sudden and unexpected loss of our co-worker and friend Mike Buffington, our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” City Administrator Mary McKittrick said in a statement.

“We are fortunate to have known and worked with him, and Geneva is a better place because of him,” according to McKittrick’s statement.

“Mike was a gentle leader and one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. His loss will certainly be felt by our entire organization for a long time.”

Traditions on display during Swedish Day “I like seeing all of the old faces and all the old friends,” he said.

Robert Holberg grew up singing many of the traditional Swedish folk songs that were sung Sunday.

“We used to sing all those old songs,” he said.

Dala horse carver Ted Bowman of Elgin was also on hand at Swedish Day demonstrating his craft. The Dala house is a traditional carved, painted wooden horse statuette that has its origins in the Swedish province Dalarna.

Bowman, 83, has been carving the horses for about 40 years.

“One was given to me and I couldn’t resist trying to make one of my own,” he said.

Sandy Braun of Medinah was also demonstrating the Swedish folk art form called dalamalning. She explained that dalamalning “has a biblical background. It tells a story.”

And learning how to paint in that style is not difficult, Braun said.

“It’s not that extremely complicated to learn,” she said.

“Each artist lends their own personality to it.”

Geneva will celebrate its Swedish roots during Swedish Days, which starts Tuesday.

Drowning victim autopsy scheduled

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – No new information was released Sunday about a four-year-old boy who drowned Saturday afternoon at the Royal Fox Country Club.

An employee working at the Royal Fox Country Club Sunday afternoon would not comment on the drowning.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell had said Saturday he did not have specific details or the identity of the drowning victim, other than to say an autopsy is scheduled Monday.

He could not be reached for comment Sunday.

St. Charles Fire Chief Joseph Schelstreet had said they were called to the Royal Fox Country Club shortly after 3

p.m. Saturday, but citing patient confidentiality rules, would only say a patient was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

The Royal Fox Country Club, at 4405 Royal and Ancient Drives, has a pool, according to its website, but officials did not confirm the drowning occurred in it.

GENEVA – Proudly dressed in blue and gold – the colors of the Swedish flag – Richard Harris of Naperville was among those participating in traditional Maypole dancing at Sunday’s 104th annual Swedish Day at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

“We thought it would be a fun thing to do,” said Harris, who came to the United States from Great Britain in 1997 but grew up in Denmark and is familiar with many Swedish traditions.

Sponsored by the local chapter of the International Organization of Good Templars, Swedish Day is an alcohol-free celebration of the Scandinavian tradition of Midsommar, the longest day of the year in Sweden. Swedish Day has been held since 1925 in Good Templar Park. Dancing with Harris were his three children.

“It was good exercise, but I think it was more tiring for them than they thought it would be,” he said.

Robert Holmberg, 41, of Chicago has been attending Swedish Day festivities at Good Templar Park since he was a child.

His mother, Eleonor Holmberg, was born in Sweden and is a member of the International Organization of Good Templars.

Sterling lucks out with Brazil trip timing

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com A church mission trip to Brazil sounded pretty good to Jake Sterling, a recent St. Charles East graduate and Saints soccer player.

Then more details surfaced, and the trip went from intriguing to almost too-goodto-be-true.

Three months ago, Sterling was contacted by Tim Massie, his former Campton United soccer coach, wondering if he’d be up for a soccer-themed church mission trip to Brazil through Christ Community Church in St. Charles.

Then Sterling found out the World Cup was going on in Brazil throughout the trip, scheduled for June 20 to 29.

Then Sterling found out the group was staying in Manaus, one of the host cities for World Cup matches.

Then Sterling found out one of the United States’ matches is scheduled for Manaus while the group is in town, June 22 Jake Sterling versus Portugal.

Seriously?

“I was like ‘No way, that’s crazy, but Brazil is a big country, we probably won’t be by the [matches],’ ” Sterling, an avid World Cup fan, said of his initial response upon learning the international soccer showdown coincided with the trip. “And then two weeks later … when I went

Beloit finishes off sweep over Cougars KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BELOIT, Wis. – The AllStar break could not have come at a better time for the Kane County Cougars (45-25), who fell victim to a walk-off home run for the second consecutive day from the Beloit Snappers (30-40).

Beloit finished a threegame sweep over the Cougars with a 5-4 victory in 12 innings.

Trailing, 3-1, in the bottom of the ninth, the Snappers quickly started their comeback, as Luis Baez reached second base on a dropped fly ball to right field by Yasiel Balaguert. With James Pugliese on the mound, BJ Boyd drove Baez home with a double, cutting the Cougars’ lead to 3-2.

Jose Chavez squared up for a bunt that dribbled in front of the plate. Ben Carhart, the Cougars’ catcher, fired to third base trying to get Boyd out, but Boyd slid underneath the tag allowing runners at the corners with

nobody out. After Pugliese struck out Herschel Powell, Melvin Mercedes’ bunt blooped to Daniel Lockhart at second base. Lockhart’s only option was the force at second, allowing Boyd to score to tie the score at three.

Neither team scored until the top of the 12th inning when Jacob Rogers sent a fly ball over the left field wall for a 4-3 lead.

The solo shot gave Rogers his team-leading sixth home run.

Zak Hermans took the mound as the fifth pitcher for the Cougars in the bottom of the 12th and quickly surrendered a single to Jaycob Brugman. Tyler Marincov lifted a 1-2 pitch deep to left for the second straight walkoff home run for the Snappers as they edged the Cougarsin extras.

All of the Cougars’ runs came off the long ball as Yasiel Balaguert connected on a two-run blast in the fourth inning and Jordan Hankins went deep in the sixth.

Sterling said the group of 14 trip members will run camps for Brazilian children at which they’ll play soccer together.

They also plan to run contests outside the stadium on match days; Switzerland and Honduras are scheduled to clash in Manaus on June 25.

to connect well through that,” Sterling said. “I know I’m going to get beat a lot on 1-on1s, and I think that’s the fun of it. I think that’s how we’ll connect generally, just by playing with each other.”

Sterling, a defender, is preparing to play college soccer this fall at Spring Arbor University (Michigan).

He said maintaining his summer training program during the trip will be a challenge.

Any interruptions to his formal regimen might be counterbalanced by picking up some slick moves from the locals.

“I actually can’t wait to just get lit up by players.”

Sterling said. “I know they’re going to show me up. I’m so excited for it.”

Sterling said some members of the group might consider trying to attend the U.S.-Portugal match if tickets can reasonably be purchased.

There have been reports of anger and protests in Brazil about the cost of hosting the World Cup, such as building the new “Arena da Amazonas” in Manaus. Sterling said he and his family are keeping an eye on the news reports.

“I think it’s going to be a lot of … I think chaos is the right word for it, but I’m not worried,” Sterling said. “I’m excited to experience it all.”

Brazilians speak Portugese but Sterling said the sport of soccer has a knack of minimizing language barriers.

Trouble looms for Sox

By TONI GINNETTI tginnetti@suntimes.com The American League Central is baseball’s most tightly contested division now, and could remain that way until September. When the margin of difference is so narrow, any aspect of the game could decide which team goes to the playoffs.

Hitting won’t likely decide the division champ, because all AL teams are designed to hit sooner or later.

That leaves pitching and defense.

And that is where trouble looms for the White Sox. Starting pitching remains a question mark, with ace Chris Sale the closest to a sure thing each time he takes the mound.

John Danks has improved in his last three starts (2-1 with a 2.11 ERA), but Jose Quintana, Hector Noesi and Andre Rienzo have yet to show consistency.

Pitching is a question for three of the Sox’ division rivals, too, though it is one of the areas where the improved Kansas City Royals are separating themselves.

The Royals rank third in

the league in pitching overall, far ahead of the Tigers (10th), Indians (12th), Sox (13th) and Twins (15th).

The Sox other lingering concern is defense, the part of the game that doomed the team last year and threatens to do the same now.

The Sox were next to last in the majors in fielding last season, and they’re no better so far this year. Only Cleveland sits below the Sox, a reason why Indians pitching has given up 45 unearned runs – most in the division.

But the Sox are next with 33 unearned runs allowed, compared to only 22 by Detroit, 20 by the Royals and 17 by Minnesota.

The Twins may be last in the league in pitching, but they are fifth in defense, which could become a reason why they remain competitive in the Central.

Sox manager Robin Ventura knows it is important to stay within striking distance of the top. But his team fell to a season-low four games below .500 (33-37) Sunday after getting swept this weekend by the Royals, the team that has Detroit looking over its shoulder now.

Striking out is not shameful

Tuesday The Chronicle’s 2014 softball all-area team is announced.

The area produced numerous regional champions as Burlington Central, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and St. Francis were among the teams to enjoy strong seasons.

Wednesday The baseball all-area team is unveiled.

Batavia was the class of the area with a 23-game winning streak and regional championship, and figures to have ample representation on the all-area team, while Batavia’s Jacob Piechota and Marmion’s Alex Troop are among the leading baseball player of the year candidates.

This is not an apology for Dunn’s tendency to whiff.

He’s in his 14th season. Jackson needed 21 seasons and Thome 22 to get where they are on the list. Dunn is to striking out what Rembrandt is to painting or, if you prefer, what Adam Sandler is to acting.

He has led the majors in strikeouts four times. That’s a lot of air turbulence.

A strikeout carries a scarlet letter: K. If there are men on base, you have done nothing to advance the baserunners. But being on the all-time top-10 list is not something to be ashamed of, either. Not if you’re hitting home runs too. Dunn has 451 of those.

“It comes with the territory,’’ he said. “I could probably go up there and not strike out very often, but I’m not sure how those (home run) numbers would look.’’

What separates him from most of the other serial whiffers is his ability to draw walks.

He twice has led the major leagues in bases on balls, including 2012, when he also struck out an amazing 222 times, one shy of the major-league single-season record.

How could someone with such a good eye have so many strikeouts?

“A lot of times, [Sunday] included, I take a lot of close pitches that are balls (but are called strikes),’’ he said. “It seems to go against me quite

a bit. Obviously, that’s a handful. I don’t like to swing early in the count too often.

A lot of times I get in a hole, but a lot of times I see a lot of pitches.

Striking out obviously is not something you’re up there wanting to do, but I think it matters more when you do it than how many times.’’

The strikeout is followed by the walk of shame back to the dugout. Where does the guilty party train his eyes?

Down, to show remorse? At the pitcher, in case he’s celebrating too much?

At some indistinct point in the distance to ignore any catcalls? You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Dunn had to pick an approach right away. He struck out looking in his first at-bat as a bigleaguer. Call it foreshadowing.

Chicago doesn’t have much of a grip on the baseball record book. Hack Wilson, the long-gone Cub, owns the single-season RBI record with 191, in 1930.

Former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood shares the record for the most strikeouts in a nine-inning game, with 20 in 1998.

George Gore had seven stolen bases in a game for the White Sox in 1881, tied for the most in baseball history.

If Dunn breaks Jackson’s record, we’ll have to share it with it Cincinnati, Arizona, and Washington, where he also played, and wherever else he might play in the future.

I say we embrace it anyway. Beggars can’t be choosers.

If the home run is a metaphor for what America thinks of itself, all power and gusto, then what is the lowly strikeout supposed to mean?

Weakness and a general lack of heart?

No, no, no. Not in the hands of those who both strike out and hit home runs prodigiously. The strikeout is the mighty swing, the grunt of all-out effort. It’s a bat slicing through the strike zone, with only air offering resistance.

It’s famine in hot pursuit of feast. Of course, there’s the caught-looking strikeout, of which there can be no defense, other than passivity, indecision or an umpire’s utter blindness.

Adam Dunn has whiffed a lot. The White Sox designated hitter has struck out 2,295 times in his career, including three times Sunday against the Royals.

That puts him 11 behind former Cub Sammy Sosa, who is third on the all-time list.

Unless Dunn starts making regular contact like a .325 hitter, he’s going to smash Reggie Jackson’s career record of 2,597 strikeouts.

Shameful? Take a look at the people who have swung and missed the most in baseball history: Jackson, Jim Thome (2,548), Sosa, Dunn, Alex Rodriguez (2,075), Andres Galarraga (2,003), Jose Canseco (1,942), Willie Stargell (1,936), Mike Cameron (1,901) and Mike Schmidt (1,883).

Not bad company.

“A lot of times, the guy on the mound realizes he’s got to make some pretty good pitches or there can be some damage done,’’ Dunn said.

“Against the guys on that list, pitchers have tended to turn it up a little bit more and throw more of a two-strike pitch (on every pitch) as op-

At the bridge table, we make deductions and sometimes use intuition. A few deals involve making one deduction and using that to draw a second deduction.

Today’s is an example.

South jumps into six spades.

West leads the heart king. How should declarer plan the play?

After North made a game-invitational limit raise, South knew that a grand slam would be good if his partner held the spade king, heart king and diamond queen.

But since he had no way to find out if North had that perfecto, South sensibly took a shot at six spades.

The contract looks too easy.

Draw trumps, run the diamonds and claim an overtrick. But rather than plunge recklessly forward, South should wonder what might go wrong.

The only danger is a bad split in each pointed suit. If diamonds are 4-0, there will be a loser only if East has all four. If spades are 3-0, declarer can avoid a loser by guessing which opponent is long in the suit and finessing through him.

South should assume he has a diamond loser. But if East has four diamonds, who is likely to be long in spades? Right -- West.

So, after taking the first trick with his heart ace, declarer should cash his spade ace. Here, when East discards, South plays a spade to dummy’s jack, cashes the spade king, throws his heart five on the club ace and concedes a diamond trick when they do break 4-0.
