There were 35 categories in which to compete, and

more than 3,500 entries were submitted for judging, according to a news release from the IPA. Last year, the Kane County Chronicle won 10 awards in the IPA contest, including two first-place awards.

The year prior to that, the Chronicle won five awards, including one for first place.

“The IPA was founded in 1865 as an organization for Illinois publishers,” states the organization’s website. “It has evolved into the largest state newspaper

editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – St. Gall Catholic Church has planned a prayer service in remembrance of Parker Wolfsmith, a 14-year-old Kaneland Harter Middle School student who died last month after he was hit by a train in Maple Park.

The service is set from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gall, which is at 120 W. Shannon St., Elburn. According to a news release from St. Parker Gall, all ages and faiths Wolfsmith are welcome to attend.

“Whether you knew Parker or not, join us to pray for those who have died,” the release stated.

The incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. May 31 at the North Liber-

ty Street railroad crossing in Maple Park. Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta has said he is planning to view a video from the train, which is expected to provide more answers about what took place. Acosta has said he believes Wolfsmith liked being close to trains as they crossed, and “this time, he got too close.”

Wednesday’s church event will begin with a discussion about the grieving process, followed by a prayer service in the church, the release stated.

“This discussion includes ways to cope and understand in order to begin to ease the pain,” the release stated.

“Our faith and community are here to help. The evening will end with a prayer service and a quiet time. You are welcome to stay for a while and enjoy the peace of our church.”

Don Bricker retiring from Shaw Media

By SHAW MEDIA Don Bricker, a former publisher of the Kane County Chronicle, has announced that he is retiring from Shaw Media to pursue a new opportunity in Colorado.

Bricker joined Shaw Media in June 2008 as the publisher of the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb and Kane County Chronicle in St. Charles. He has since served in a number of capacities, and was promoted last year to be vice president of Shaw’s suburban publishing.

Earlier this year, he was named publisher of the Morris Daily Herald and The Herald-News in Joliet.

Bricker said he and his wife, Karen, are moving back to Colorado to be near two of their children and their newborn grandson.

Bricker said he has accepted a position with Colorado College in Colorado Springs as the associate director of its career center.

Bricker’s last day was Friday. Shaw Media is in the process of looking for Bricker’s replacement.

Geneva mourns death of electric superintendent

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Officials said the death of Geneva electric superintendent Michael Buffington after a car crash Thursday night in Sugar Grove has devastated those who knew him as a quiet man and a well-respected professional.

“Mike’s quiet manner endeared him to those he worked with and those he served,” Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns wrote in a text.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Buffington was able to explain in layman’s terms the issues involved in the volatile electric industry.

“He was always professional in his demeanor,” Schielke said. “He had a strong understanding of the electric industry. His experience was a high value to us.”

Buffington, 64, of Geneva, was driving a Ford Taurus and apparently rolled through a stop sign at the top of the Route 47 exit ramp from Interstate 88, turning left to head north, Sugar Grove Police Chief Patrick Rollins said.

Buffington’s car was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming Chevrolet Trailblazer, which did not have to stop. The intersection is not a four-way stop, Rollins said, but all vehicles must stop when they reach the top of the ramp.

The speed limit there is 55 mph, Rollins said, but he did not know how fast the Trailblazer was traveling, as the crash probe is continuing.

Three occupants of the Trailblazer, a 46-year-old Sugar Grove resident and two youths, age 12 and 14, were taken to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred about 9 p.m., and Buffington was pronounced dead at the scene, Rollins said.

“We are devastated,” Burns wrote in a text. “Mike’s service

was exemplary, and his commitment to the community evident in the pride he had in his work. Our thoughts are with his wife, Jaci, their children and grandchildren during this unimaginable time.”

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said an autopsy for Buffington is scheduled for today at the DuPage County Coroner’s office in Wheaton.

“We don’t know if he had some kind of event beforehand,” Russell said, referring to the possibility that BuffingMichael ton might have Buffington had a heart attack or other medical issue that may have caused his death before the crash.

“This was a tragic accident for all involved,” Rollins said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved.”

As electric superintendent for 10 years at Geneva, Buffington also served as president of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency board of directors, officials said. NIMPA is made up of the electric utilities of Geneva, Batavia and Rochelle, all with contracts to buy power from the Prairie State Energy Campus near downstate Marissa.

The coal-fired electric generating plant was developed

by Peabody Energy. It serves 30 member communities and is owned by the Prairie State Generating Company.

NIMPA general counsel Richard Heinemann said Buffington had been with the agency the longest, starting at the beginning of the Prairie State project.

“He was a big supporter of the project and had a deep understanding of it ... an intimate understanding of the project,” Heinemann said. “He served as NIMPA’s representative on the Prairie State managing board.

Heinemann said Buffington was returning from a meeting of the Prairie State managing board Thursday night.

Heinemann said the NIMPA board will hold an election to choose an interim president, starting with a special meeting Wednesday.

“In terms of the agency, we will carry forward,” Heinemann said. “We are deeply saddened – devastated, actually.”

Heinemann said Buffington was professionally respected and well-liked.

Heinemann described Buffington as a serious person, an engineer by training, who spent much of his career serving on behalf of municipal utilities.

“I’m devastated,” Heinemann said. “I really enjoyed working with him. I had a lot of respect for him. He was a very good person. He was very quiet, very pleasant and had a wonderful sense of humor. ...

People respected Mike in the industry, and when he spoke, they listened.”

Ashlie Kuehn, general counsel and spokeswoman for Prairie State wrote in an email statement that “the more than 600 employees at Prairie State Generating Company extend their deepest condolences to Mr. Buffington’s family and friends.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Heritage Center is selling tickets to the fourth annual Heritage Celebration Pig Roast and Silent Auction to take place from 5 to 9 p.m. June 28 at the museum, which is at 215 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The wonder of the goldenrod gall fly GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Editor’s note: The following is a “Good Natured” column that originally ran March 23, 2013: Let’s face it, fruit flies have an image problem.

Some are serious agricultural pests (remember California’s infamous medfly infestation?) and others, namely the Drosophilidae, are primarily known for the way they hover around overripe fruit.

(Who hasn’t swatted away these tiny creatures as they’ve swarmed over a bowl of browning bananas?

People raising tiny toads, that’s who. But that’s another story for another day.)

However, there is another type of fruit fly living in our midst, one that goes about its business quietly, aiding several other beneficial species along the way: the goldenrod gall fly.

If you’ve ever walked past a field of goldenrod, you’re probably familiar with this industrious creature. Or at least the products of its industry.

In late spring and early summer, females of the species Eurosta solidaginis lay individual eggs in the terminal buds of goldenrod, or Solidago spp., plants.

The eggs hatch in a week or so, and the wee larvae burrow their way down into the pith, or spongy middle part of the stem.

The next time you’re tempted to dismiss a growth on a plant stem as “just another goldenrod gall,” remember that it’s the work of E. solidaginis – a fruitful fly indeed.

Once ensconced, they go about their business of feeding on plant juices and growing.

As they expand, so too does the plant tissue around them, probably in response to chemicals emitted by the baby bug.

This time of year, the immature flies for the most part are safely insulated within the plant’s stem, nestled in their homes that by this point have swollen to roughly the size and shape of a gumball.

I say “for the most part” because not every goldenrod gall fly lives this life of luxury.

Some are parasitized by beetles and wasps, while others are consumed by chickadees and downy woodpeckers.

Those that do survive will go on to wake from diapause in spring, then pupate and emerge as adults that will begin the cycle all over again. (Here’s a fun fact: Adult gall flies do not have the proper appendages to engineer an escape and hence would be helplessly trapped inside their former safehouses, were it not for one amazing feat.

Driven by instinct, and a pair of mouth hooks, the gall fly larva excavates an exit

tunnel in fall, stopping just short of the thin epidermal layer of the plant.

Post pupation, all the adult fly needs to do is ram through the fragile skin, like a football player breaking through a banner on game day, and it’s free to take wing.

(Go team Gall Fly!) At this point, you may think we’ve come to the end of the Tale of the Gall.

Successful emergence means the gall’s usefulness is over and done with, right?

Well, not quite.

Like so many other fascinating facets of nature, the end of this story actually

Provided they weren’t excavated by bird beaks, or chewed upon by rodents, those galls have plenty of utility left.

The tough, corky interior still can protect inhabitants from intruders, and the chambers that once housed gall fly larvae can provide roomy, even spacious, accommodations for a new round of occupants.

Scientists investigating secondary uses of goldenrod galls have discovered all sorts of creatures holed up inside these sturdy, readymade structures.

Small species of wasps, bees, spiders and beetles – many that are important parasites or predators of pest species – take advantage of the space inside the galls’ nearly impenetrable walls.

Wasps will cover the chamber’s exit hole with a tiny bit of mud; bees will fill it with a parchment-like plug; and spiders may add a dollop of silken web as a door.

He preferred working in the outdoors over his years behind the desk and truly enjoyed his second career.

The family became a wholesaler of Christmas trees to various locations nationwide and even had a tree lot in Geneva. Jack was an animal lover and found great pleasure in traveling, particularly in the western U.S. He also was a member of the Geneva Auxiliary Fire Department for 18 years, a Trustee of the Fabyan Foundation and a lifelong member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva. Jack’s greatest joy, however, was being with his

He was very supportive of the Experimental Aircraft Association and attended the fly-in in Oshkosh for many years.

Remembered for his devilish grin, engaging eyes and aggressive handshakes, he routinely ended comments with a very uplifting laugh. …

This made him very approachable and made him many fast friends through the years. This combined with his love of dance and celebration meant he was often the life of the party.

He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much.

He actively encouraged higher education for his entire family and never missed a chance to talk about his children and grandchildren’s work, education and other life achievements.

SUSAN ‘SUSE’ WAKE FITZPATRICK Born: Aug. 1, 1957 Died: June 7, 2014 Susan “Suse” Wake Fitzpatrick, 56, passed away at her Bonita Springs, Florida, home on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Suse was born August 1, 1957, and grew up in Aurora. She was the third of six children born to William “Bill” and Barbara “Bobbie” Wake. Suse proudly earned her associate degree in business administration from Parkland College in Champaign in 1978.

Whether you knew Suse for five minutes or 50-plus years, she made an unforgettable impact on your life.

When it came to giving to others, there was no gesture too large.

She could light up any room with her laughter and outgoing personality, and her uncanny impersonations of those she cared about.

Suse will be most remembered for her love of animals, outrageous cooking abilities, endless amount of charitable donations, wit and unfiltered sense of humor.

Suse is survived by her children, Lindsay Karich (32), William “Bill” Karich (29) and wife Amanda, Andrew “Drew” Karich (28) and fiancé Percillia and Jarrett Fitzpatrick (22). JOHN T. MONNETT SR. Born: Feb. 11, 1911 Died: June 6, 2014 John T. Monnett Sr., 103, died Friday June 6, 2014. He was born Feb. 11, 1911, in Oak Park, and lived most of his life in the Chicago area. He later moved into Friendship Village in Schaumburg, where he lived for 10 years. For the past five years, he has been a resident of Oakwood Manor Assisted Living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Mr. Monnett worked for Western Electric, a division of AT&T, as a field engineer. He retired in 1974 and became a very active member of the AT&T Pioneers. He was the ultimate handyman and people called him “Mr. Fix It.” He spoke often about the importance of hard work and keeping

He was preceded in death by just about everyone born in 1911, including Ronald Reagan. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Art Monnett; a sister, Dorothy Scheck; his first wife, Francis Monnett; his second wife, Eunice Peterson Monnett; a daughter, Dawn Marie Diedrich; and an infant great-grandson, Ryan Smith.

A graveside committal service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

LEONA CLAIRE IRMA NETTLAND OLSON Born: July 12, 1928 Died: June 12, 2014 Leona Claire Irma Nettland Olson, 85, formerly of St. Charles, died June 12, 2014.

Lee was born on July 12, 1928, in Chicago, to Irma and Lionel Nettland.

Lee graduated from Taft High School and North Park College. On May 3, 1952, she married Ray Olson and both of them were original signers incorporating the Village of Oak Brook in 1958. Lee owned her own tax and accounting business in St. Charles for more than 30 years.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles,

where she served on numerous committees. Lee will be remembered for her love of knitting, playing bridge and her involvement in the Sons of Norway. One of Lee’s greatest joys was the musical talents of her daughters.

Lee is survived by her three daughters, Lesley Olson (Ekki Schroer), Martha Sobie (Bob) and Vivian Kage (John); five grandchildren, Carl Sobie (Kayla), Roger Sobie (Jessica), Mitch Kage, Brent Kage and Finn Olson; as well as many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Olson; and her sister, Arlene Nettland.

After mold found, county morgue shut down temporarily

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell temporarily shut down the county’s morgue after he said black mold was found in and around the cooler and refrigerator area, leading him to outsource his work to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office for the time being.

At the county’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting Friday, Russell said the mold was found after Mechanical Inc. started re- Chris Lauzen placing parts of the coroner building freezer, which broke in November, causing two decomposing bodies to leak Rob Russell out during the Thanksgiving holiday. The mold was identified by an environmental scientist who suggested that Russell close the building, which he did after notifying Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

Russell then contacted DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen to ask whether Russell could rent the DuPage coroner building in the meantime.

“We are very happy and able to accommodate [Russell’s] coroner’s office in our facility,” Jorgensen said during the meeting.

The partnership with DuPage County officially was announced during the Friday meeting. According to a statement issued Friday by the Kane County Coroner’s Office, “there will be no impairment of service to the public.

Families and funeral homes will be notified of the new temporary location, and information will also be available

on the Kane County website.”

There are no concrete plans for how the partnership will be paid for, or how much it will cost, Russell and Jorgensen said. Jorgensen said he’s researching a reasonable mutual aid price and would discuss it in a DuPage County meeting Tuesday. The option of storing the bodies in a hospital was discussed during the meeting, but Russell said that posed too many security issues.

The arrangement upset Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, who approved $76,000 in 2014 capital appropriations for Russell in October. Those funds were requested by Russell, who said he would use it to replace his cooler and freezer.

Since then, Russell used the money only to fix parts of the cooler and freezer, saying he doesn’t want to waste taxpayers’ dollars.

“Paying for a morgue that’s unused and then paying a rental fee will end up costing us substantially more in the long run,” Lauzen said.

“Certainly, we want the environment to be safe, but [Russell] has had seven months to replace the unit. If he asked to repair [the unit], then he would have gotten less than $76,000.”

There is disagreement between what “the unit” is.

Lauzen said it’s both the cooler and freezer. Russell said the two are separate units.

“I don’t want to pour money into a broken building; there are other issues with [my] building that are very significant,” Russell said.

Russell said none of his employees will be laid off, since his offices can stay open during the outsourcing.

“The air from the morgue is being vented straight outside, so although there’s air from the offices going into the morgue, it’s not reversed,”

ST. CHARLES – The summer series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program gets underway next month and registration is now open.

Taught by University of Illinois Extension experts, these classes cover a variety of topics, from trending projects such as youth gardens to timely tips on home orchards and mosquitoes.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Raymond Fitzenreider, a prostate cancer survivor from Geneva, joined more than 100 five-year cancer survivors from across the country at a celebration of hope and symbolic tree planting ceremony recently at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, according to a news release.

Fitzenreider also took part in a tree planting ceremony.

The activities were part of the annual Celebrate Life event, in which cancer

survivors come together to rejoice in their personal milestones and to support one another as they continue their cancer survivorship journey, the release stated.

“Being a five-year survivor means everything to me,” Fitzenreider said, according to the release. “This journey has taught me so many things, and none of it would have been possible without the amazing team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and for that, I am blessed.”

The Celebrate Life event marks the 26th year that a tree has been planted in honor of each five-year survivor.

STC girl takes 2nd place in nationwide art contest

Hanne Livermore won second place in the 9-11 age group category in Sodexo’s 2014 North American Safety Poster Contest.

The contest was open to all employees and clients of the food service company, which contracts with St. Charles School District 303. Winners were announced this month, which is National Safety Month.

As part of finishing in the top three of her age group, Livermore’s poster will be featured in Sodexo’s FY15 Safety Calendar.

illustrate safe practices and behaviors. Livermore’s poster is a split image depicting a girl riding her bike with a helmet on the left side and the same girl in the doctor’s office under the phrase “Wear your helmet when ... riding your bike!”

Livermore’s parents always tell her to wear a helmet when she rides her bike, so she decided to make that the theme of her poster. Livermore also was a member of the safety patrol at Bell Graham Elementary School, where she just completed the fifth grade.

Bell Graham Principal Patti Palagi said Livermore is a great child and the school staff is happy she was selected.

Livermore said she’s been drawing ever since she could hold a crayon.

“It’s something that makes me relax. ... It makes me happy,” she said.

A Geneva woman facing charges in connection to an armed robbery early Wednesday at the Batavia Wal-Mart was released from jail Thursday night after posting 10 percent of her $25,000 bond.

Kayla N. Magnuson, 22, of Geneva, and a 17-year-old St. Charles boy have been charged with felony counts of robbery and armed robbery along with retail theft, a misdemeanor.

The charges are in connection with an armed robbery early Wednesday morning at the Batavia Wal-Mart at 801 N. Randall Road, according to court documents.

Batavia police at 5:58 a.m. were dispatched to the Batavia store for a theft in progress. According to a Batavia police report, both Magnuson and the St. Charles boy entered Wal-Mart with the intent to steal a flat screen TV set.

“It was fun for us,” said Josiah Viland, a Batavia resident and the lead singer of Spectators. “We were grateful to be there in the first place. Also, none of us had ever been to New York City.

We are grateful for the excuse to visit the Big Apple.”

After more than a dozen sightings in DeKalb County starting Wednesday, the bear was spotted Friday afternoon in a large stack of timber on a farm in Ogle County, said Hank Frazier, Region 1 commander for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the bear was there, and the owner of the farm has no plans of running it off the property.

“We hope it will keep heading northwest, but he seems to be staying put for now,” Frazier said. “Hopefully, it is on the right path and going to head back to wherever it came from.”

Before ending up in Ogle County near Rochelle, there were four more sightings reported Thursday night into Friday morning in DeKalb County.

A second sighting was reported about 11:10 p.m. near a retention pond at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA on Bethany Road in Sycamore.

Deputies were unable to locate the bear during a search of both areas.

A third sighting was reported about 6:30 a.m. Friday

near Fairview Road and Tower Road north of Interstate 88 in the western portion of the county, Dumdie said. A deputy searching the area was able to confirm that the bear was there.

At 7 a.m. Friday, a deputy located the bear resting under a tree near the intersection of Fairview and West County Line roads. A DeKalb resident Friday morning also reported that his bird feeder was damaged by the bear, but it could not confirm that it was actual-

ly done by the animal.

The bear was first seen near Genoa about 8:20 a.m.

Wednesday near the intersection of routes 72 and 23. A sheriff’s deputy later spotted it near Derby Line Road in a heavily wooded area close to the Ellwood Greens housing development.

“We did a good job and the right thing by letting the bear be itself and roam free,” Dumdie said. “Citizens did the right thing by allowing it to roam, and hopefully it will get back to its natural habitat where it belongs.”

The IDNR continues to monitor the bear, which they believe is the same animal recently spotted across northern Illinois.

Halliwell said he understands how problems can come up, especially during a 24-hour streaming show featuring 24 bands.

“We are very understanding of the fact there was so much going on,” Halliwell said. “You can’t expect everything to go perfectly.”

Spectators, which describes its sound as indiespace-dance-punk/rejuvenation, formed three years ago.

The band’s members are from Batavia, Aurora and South Elgin.

The band received a few compliments from the judges, including Grammy Award-nominee Natasha Bedingfield, who said she “liked the beat.”

The judges also complimented the dancing style of bassist Chris Ford, who appreciated the compliment.

“I was glad to hear that,” he said. “It helps create a vibe for the band.”

U.S. would benefit if Cantor ran again as ‘sore loser’ BLOOMBERG NEWS Eric Cantor is exiting the stage quietly, resigning next month as House majority leader and declining to run as a write-in candidate after his stunning defeat in this week’s Republican primary in Virginia. His magnanimity makes him an ideal champion for a new cause: Eliminating “sore loser” laws.

Virginia, like 43 other states, prohibits candidates who lose their party primaries from qualifying for the general election ballot as independents. Instead, if such candidates want to continue their quests for office, the state forces them to tilt at windmills, by mounting writein campaigns. Only a small handful of House and Senate candidates have ever succeeded as write-ins.

These laws, known as “sore loser laws,” take various forms, but have the same effect: With rare exceptions, they end the campaigns of candidates who fail to win over the party base. That’s good for party discipline and unity. But party leaders – not the government – should be responsible for enforcing party discipline and promoting party unity. Government’s interest lies in ensuring access to the ballot for candidates and voters, not protecting party prerogatives.

Sore loser laws would be bad enough if their pernicious effects were limited to abridging the rights of candidates and limiting the choices of voters. But it gets worse: They also contribute to the dysfunctional polarization of the U.S. political system, by reinforcing the extremism of party primaries.

A new Pew Research Center poll finds what has been long evident: Voters who participate in party primaries tend to be more stridently ideological than the general electorate. They push candidates in both parties toward extreme positions, and they punish those who do not move far or fast enough. They also contribute to political polarization.

Almost every successful party primary challenge occurs from the far right or left, of course. And the constant, looming threat of a primary challenge leads incumbents to adopt hard-line positions that are often out-ofsync with the general electorate, which makes bipartisan compromise exceedingly rare. Fear of being “primaried” is perhaps the most powerful force in Washington today, and it is a leading cause of its dysfunctional culture.

Sore loser laws compound this problem in two ways.

First, they encourage candidates – and incumbents – to cater to the extremists in their party. Second, they prevent moderate candidates who lose party nominations from appealing to the broader electorate.

If Eric Cantor won’t challenge sore loser laws, someone else should. Repealing them wouldn’t end the dysfunctional polarization of U.S. politics, but it would help.

The reach of Freedom of Information Act The Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, does apply to State’s Attorney’s Offices – that’s according to a recent ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court.

The case, Nelson v. Kendall County, was decided in May, and Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon discussed the ramifications of the court’s decision during his monthly media meeting Tuesday.

“We are gearing up to prepare for those requests,” he said.

The outcome of the case is important. Journalists and Kane County citizens should take note. Before the ruling came down, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office had

contended that FOIA did not apply to it, although details on contracts and the office’s budget had been available to the community.

Since the decision, however, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has changed its position on the matter, with McMahon noting that his office will have to be more discerning when considering exemptions to FOIA requests in the future.

The written opinion of Nelson v. Kendall County states that, “The issue on this appeal is whether the office of the State’s Attorney of Kendall County is exempt from the disclosure requirements of the Freedom of Information Act on the grounds that the State’s

Attorney’s Office is part of the judicial branch of Illinois government and therefore beyond the reach of the FOIA.” It goes on to read that, “ ...

At the time FOIA was enacted, as now, the case law consistently recognized that the office of the State’s Attorney was part of the executive branch of state government,” concluding that “ ... FOIA applies to the office of State’s Attorney.”

The purpose of FOIA is to make the workings of government, public officials and public employees more transparent.

They hog the road A substantial amount of taxpayer money was spent to create wonderful bike paths along the Fox River. Yet the [bicyclists] apparently refuse to use them, instead [making] a disaster on Route 25 with the traffic. They are rude.

They are abusive, and they are arrogant. They hog the road. They act like they own it. But they don’t have to obey the rules of the road. Enough already.

I was at RiverFest on Saturday, June 7, and decided to stop in my favorite restaurant, Pizzeria Neo, and had an experience that I need to sound off about. I was seated near four boys. They looked to be between 12 and 14, and they were acting so obnoxiously, so loud, so disrespectful to the server. It was just appalling. I’ve never seen such bad behavior in the young men of St. Charles. They were heckling her before they had to leave, asking if they could go, and they didn’t leave her a tip. And they had the gall to ask – or say – sorry, enjoy your tip, when they know they didn’t leave her one. And I’ve been to this restaurant before. I happen to know this woman is a lovely young lady. She has a beautiful baby at home, and she’s the last person ever to deserve this treatment.

Nobody does. So, I hope every parent is talking to their children about proper restaurant etiquette and especially common human decency, because that was just very sad to see.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com If the St. Charles East girls soccer team needed to lighten the mood, they could always count on something giggle-worthy coming out of coach Paul Jennison’s mouth.

It’s not so much the England native’s sharp accent as the native sayings that occasionally require a double-take to properly digest.

“We always make fun of him for it,” East senior defender Shannon Rasmussen said. “He used to get mad, but now he just accepts the fact we make fun of him for it. Some of the terms he uses in soccer don’t even make sense, but I’ve gotten so used

to everything he says from a cultural standpoint. I don’t say ‘cleats’ anymore, I say ‘boots,’ and my mom has no idea what I’m talking about.”

However, Jennison’s message was delivered, it clearly found its mark for the Saints, who stormed to the IHSA Class 3A state championship match before settling for second place. Jennison is the Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.

Jennison repeatedly called it a “privilege” to work with such a fun-loving, tight-knit team. Many of the players felt just as strongly about their coach.

“Jennison is a fantastic coach,” East senior goalkeep-

Caddying all about sweating the details

T. CHARLES – Learning the intricacies of being a caddie caused information overload for Matt Samuelson when he started his summer job six years ago.

Lugging golfers’ bags all over St. Charles Country Club wasn’t exactly a picnic, either.

Back then, Samuelson was a foot shorter than he is now, and he only weighed about 100 pounds.

Samuelson, a recent St. Charles North graduate, is up to 5-foot-11 these days and better able to withstand the physical rigors, but it’s his advanced command of caddying’s nuances that have allowed him to climb the ranks as one of the club’s most polished caddies.

It starts with a simple philosophy.

“Your goal as a caddie is to make the player do as little work as possible, so you do everything,” Samuelson said. “It was a little harder to get used to, like the little things, keeping his clubs clean, getting the flags on the green. Samuelson is often matched up with the same players multiple times, some of whom request him specifically.

Samuelson was a solid golfer for the North Stars and said he clicks well with some of the club’s more proficient players.

Caddies often feel a sense of ownership in their players’ rounds, Samuelson said.

“I like caddying for good players,” Samuelson said. “I was a 5 handicap myself last year so it’s easier for me to relate to the better players, like ‘OK, this is what I might do.’ … If a 20 handicap’s going to ask me [about club selection], the ball could still go anywhere. But if they hit the shot well and it ends up over the green or something, yeah, I feel bad. But that doesn’t happen too often.”

Have you had much experience playing against her?

She’s a really sweet girl.

We’ve played at some other tournaments. … She’s a good player and I knew it was going to be a tough match, but I was really excited to play her.

What is your tournament schedule for the rest of the summer?

You know, I’m going to try to get in a couple more. I’m in a couple classes at a community college to try to lighten the load for the fall. I’m going to try to go from five classes to four [a semester] … but I’m going to do a couple tournaments that hopefully will not conflict with my attendance in those courses.

What drew you to Illinois State?

The coach, Darby Sligh.

What is your intended major?

I’m going to major in speech pathology. … It’s been fairly recent. I have a family friend who’s a speech pathologist and just hearing her talk about it and do some research turned my interest to that field. …

My dad’s cousin has a private practice where I’m hopefully going to do some shadowing there this summer.

To what extent did you keep in touch with Geneva golfers during the last half of high school?

Yeah, I know the girls well on the golf team. Freshman and sophomore year, I was on the golf team and then junior, senior year I wasn’t.

I did a couple of classes at a community college and was focusing on my schoolwork so I wasn’t competing on the team the last two years, but they’re great and the coaches were great and I’m definitely going to keep in touch. Yeah, it was a good experience. … I did some MAJGT and AJGA events to stay competitive in my summers and my falls and started back up in the spring and maybe one or two in the winter to stay competitive.

BELOIT, Wis. – The Cougars haven’t had a win at Pohlman Field yet this season, but Friday there was a reason, and it was Dylan Covey. Beloit’s right-hander tossed a complete-game seven hitter, allowing just two runs as the Snappers defeated the Cougars, 3-2.

Pitching dominated the game as Paul Blackburn gave the Cougars five strong innings, followed by three innings of relief from Josh Davis.

Davis did not allow a run in his first two innings, but had trouble finishing off the Snappers in the eighth.

Recent Geneva graduate Abby Luchtenburg advanced to the quarterfinals of this week’s IWGA state women’s amateur at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, falling Thursday to eventual champion Lexi Harkins.

Luchtenburg will descend on the area again soon enough; she committed to Illinois State after not competing for Geneva in her final two high school seasons. Catching up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley, Luchtenburg addressed her agenda and summer outlook as part of the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat. GENEVA – Outfielders’ expert patrolling of what manager Mark Johnson calls the “big ol’ yard” of Fifth Third Bank Ballpark has fueled two of the club’s more impressive statistics.

You don’t get to be 28-7 at home with a Midwest League-leading 2.93 ERA through Thursday without an athletic back line, to borrow a soccer term.

A group that knows the wind – both its own and the one swirling around it – goes a long way, too.

“Blowing in, switching directions. In a game, you always have to be conscious of that, and definitely learn from that,” center fielder Jake Hannemann said.

At the Improper Fraction, that can be an especially tricky task, players find, putting a premium on getting fly ball reads during batting practice.

“Play deep, for the most part,” corner outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. said.

“We don’t know. One day, the wind blows out and it’s good for hitters. The next day the wind will be blowing straight in and good for pitchers. I mean, you get used to it. You have to play in every condition.”

Manager Mark Johnson, who has presided over 104 home games since joining the Cougars last season, argues for a larger ratio of pitcher-friendly days.

But whether the wind is blowing across, in or out, only affects so much.

“You’ve still got to make pitches and you’ve still got to make plays, you know,” Johnson said. “And it shows when our pitchers do make certain pitches and they locate well and they put guys away and our defense catches the ball, that’s where it’s at. It’s not so much the size of the ballpark, really. We keep the ball down in the zone and try to keep the ball there anyways.”

Dunston to Dunston: Get ready for the living Shawon-O-Meter.

The San Francisco Giants’ visit the White Sox from Monday through Wednesday coincides with the Midwest League All-Star break, giving Dunston Jr. the chance to see his namesake, Shawon a former Dunston Jr. Cubs All-Star infielder.

Shawon Dunston serves as the Giants’ instant replay liaison, watching games from the clubhouse.

“Most likely, probably just one day I’ll go see him,” said Dunston Jr., who does

not plan to return to his native California for the break.

Dunston might just turn up in Fifth Third Bank Ballpark – a venue nine years in the making when he played in the Midwest League for Quad Cities in 1982 – later this season. The Giants play at Wrigley Field from Aug. 19 to 21, in the middle of a Cougars’ homestand against Burlington and Clinton.

Brown’s attitude never wavered. Despite never being in a position to show in game situations how much he had improved, Brown tried to pick up information from the sideline that he could implement in practice the next week. By doing so, he figured, his coaches would trust him enough to throw him into action if need be.

“Being a backup, you’ve got to go into the game thinking that you’re going to play – no matter what,” Brown said.

“Then, if you don’t get called up, it is what it is.”

Brown’s demeanor won’t change heading into another season when his role, for the most part, seems uncertain. He has shifted from guard to tackle and will work for playing time as a swing tackle along with seventh-round rookie Charles Leno Jr., Michael Ola and Joe Long, among others. There are subtle changes, but the blocking schemes remain the same as they would be at guard, al-

lowing Brown to continue to shore up his technique.

He constantly is picking the brain of teammate and starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod, who has encouraged Brown to keep focused on improvement and not to be sidetracked by what at times can be a numbers game that can become hard to ignore.

For now, Brown won’t allow himself to become consumed by again making the Bears’ regular-season roster or with how much he will play – if at all – if he’s there when the season begins. He instead will continue to push himself as hard as he can in practice, knowing there is only so much he can control at the end of the day.

“I’m just trying to play,” Brown said. “You go through practice and anything can happen. You just need to be ready.

LAKE FOREST – Any frustration James Brown experienced last season would be perfectly understandable.

But that’s not how the thirdyear Bears offensive tackle looks at it.

After competing for the starting right guard spot in training camp before making the 53-man roster, Brown never appeared in a game, forcing him to take in the entire season from the sideline. Considering the way his NFL career has progressed – from being an undrafted free agent out of Troy to being a practice squad player and finally an emergency starter for the final three games in 2012 – establishing any continuity with the Bears hasn’t been easy.

But ask the 306-pound reserve and former Mississippi weightlifting state champion if he ever tires of not having a defined role outside of being a

lineman asked to be constantly at the ready and Brown insists it’s not his style to complain.

“You don’t think about it,” Brown said matter-of-factly this week. “It’s all about the team. Guys that are selfish think about themselves.

You’ve just got James Brown to think about the team. Wherever I can fit in and help the team out, that’s what I’m going to be about.”

Maintaining such a selfless attitude over the course of an entire season seems difficult.

But rather than focusing on how much he’s not playing – especially after finishing 2012 as a starter, albeit because of injuries – Brown insists he is fine carrying out the role the Bears have asked him to play.

WEEKEND LIFE A bone to pick over a broken finger Whether we realize it or not, we’re always teaching our children. With every choice, every comment and every silence, we’re always teaching them something. Wearisome, if you think about it, but such is a parent’s life. If we’re awake, we’re thinking.

I’ve had lots to ponder this week, including a visit to Holly’s orthopedic surgeon. In April, she broke the growth plate of one of her fingers during a drill before a soccer game. She didn’t need surgery, but would need eight weeks in a splint. She re-broke the same spot two weeks later (even though it was splinted), when she lost her footing on some steps and grabbed for the railing.

Poor kid. This break was even worse, unfortunately, but her latest X-ray, taken Wednesday, showed that it was on the mend. I could see this and was pleased with her progress.

The doctor said it was time to wean her from the splint, and explained how to do this. I wondered if it was too early.

“You’re over-thinking this,” he impatiently replied. He’d interrupted me and had been somewhat brusque during our first two visits, too, which I was willing to chalk up to his being

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose rushed or tired – but this was our third visit. He wasn’t just having a bad day, this is just his way, it seems. Whether or not my questions were warranted (no such thing, in my book – and how could this one not be, given the rebreak?), his attitude was not. Why be impatient? Why be rude? How is that helpful?

Holly was watching. I didn’t want to create discomfort for her, but nor did I wish to teach her to stifle her questions. I’m raising a confident but graceful young woman. A balance needed to be struck.

Yes, I’m always thinking.

“I feel insulted,” I quietly replied.

“She re-broke it two weeks later, and the X-ray then looked worse than the first. I wondered if that reset the clock.”

“You brought her here, and I examined her. If there was a formula, she

wouldn’t need to be seen,” he said.

“Yes, but I heard you say at our first visit that she’d be in the splint for at least eight weeks. It’s been just over eight weeks, but she re-broke it – worse – two weeks in.”

I could see she’d made progress.

I reasoned that any guidelines, even his, regarding the eight weeks, could be amended if healing was faster, and said so. I also volunteered that he is the bone expert, and that because I trusted his judgment (he’d been recommended by friends), I’d paid attention at that first visit (before the second break) when he’d told us to expect eight weeks in the splint. I was confused, I said, and just wanted to understand.

Mama bear, here, just wants to understand so that she can help her kid, pure and simple. That’s my job. I know we’re talking about a little broken bone, not a tumor, but still. I felt foolish and small. I felt my eyes begin to well up but no tears breached the banks.

Geesh, if I have questions, I’m going to ask them. Are most doctors used to parents who don’t? Not the ones I prefer to patronize.

“See you in four weeks,” he said, and abruptly left the room. Maybe not,

I thought.

Hey, all you doctors (and other medical professionals), like it or not, we parents are your “patients,” too.

We’re integral to making your plan work. And, well, we pay the bills. There is that. If you cannot be patient just because it’s useful and, moreover, because it’s the right thing to do, consider that we have the means to drive new patients to or away from you with our referrals.

I’m too classy to publicly name names. And besides, I’m guessing this doctor isn’t the only one with less-thanstellar bedside manner.

Even so, as we waited our turn to make our next appointment, I considered the big picture and decided that continuity of care was more important than dragging Holly to a new doctor.

Like it or not, I realized, this guy knows how her finger looks now. He’ll notice any subtle changes. But after this finger heals? We won’t be going back.

Master gardeners staff the help desk to identify and solve your horticultural problems. I thought you might like to read about a recent experience.

Another master gardener and I were visited by a client with a recently purchased flowering vine. The vine appeared to be dying at the base of the plant; some of the leaves were totally dried out.

Other leaves were brown spotted and/or brown rimmed. The end leaves of the vine appeared dark green and quite healthy.

The leaves closest to the base of the plant were rather pale and appeared less healthy. The client said that she had recently purchased the plant and had placed it outside on her deck.

The ladybird beetle is generally considered a useful insect, because many species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens.

My cohort and I began examining the plant. We first looked for the obvious signs of disease. We looked and looked

and could not find one defining factor. Richard Henschel, our horticultural instructor, happened to be on site. We didn’t

hesitate to ask for Richard’s assistance as he is always willing to assist.

Richard began examining the leaves with a lens and declared that he could find no signs of disease, fungal or bacterial. Meanwhile my fellow master gardener, Sue, let out a squeal as she spotted something moving.

This moving “thing” was about the size of a fleck of pepper. Sue managed to capture the speck and placed it under the microscope.

Our fleck of pepper revealed itself to be the larva of a ladybird beetle (Family: Coccinellidae).

We continued investigating.

Next we placed one of the brown-spotted leaves under the microscope. We not only spotted another ladybird larva but also an aphid. With this discovery, we knew that we did not have an insect problem as both the larvae and adult ladybird beetles are natural predators that feed on soft-bodied pests such as aphids.

Here is the conclusion of this story. We checked all that we could and determined that the problem of the dried leaves was the result of the plant being moved from within the confines of a nursery (protected indoor environment) to being placed outside on the client’s deck. The outdoor conditions affected the older leaves while the newer growth survived and flourished. The client was advised to take her plant home and place it in the ground. Problem solved ... happy client!

ships. The harmful effects of a lifetime of anger on one family can be passed down through several generations.

I say, why get angry in the first place?

Unless you are protecting your family or yourself from physical harm, there is never a good reason for anger.

I can think of many examples in life where staying calm in the first place would produce a better outcome than allowing a situation to get out of hand (lion taming and snake handling, for instance).

The most important of these examples, however, is within our everyday personal interactions. Please note, calm does not mean quietly seething.

Approaching issues before they become emotionally charged can prevent us from losing control. When something is just starting to bother you, way before you have a lot of emotions built up over the matter, talk the situation out calmly and openly (no games, no defenses, no manipulations).

Approach the discussion with the

mindset of wanting to resolve the issue compassionately, rather than wanting to win. Open your mind to understanding the other person’s position. Set aside any emotional display and seek out a positive resolution. It will always be easier, and the outcome more positive, if you approach a challenge from this perspective. Remember that everyone sees things differently; and so conflict can never be avoided. But if you see conflicts in a positive light, as challenges that are meant to build relationships, rather than destroy them, the rewards to you will be great.

Anger is nothing more than a bad habit and can be eliminated from your life altogether. You just have to work on it one day at a time. By replacing your negative thoughts with positive thoughts and feelings for others, and by having a compassionate heart, you will transform not only your life, but the lives of those around you.

Today, I will be talking about how we can avoid anger altogether.

The Prophet Muhammad is quoted as saying, “The strong man is not a good wrestler; but the one who controls himself when angry.”

It takes a very strong person to control himself or herself once angered. So much is working against them: Emotional pain, unresolved issues and the physiological changes that anger can trigger.

If we succeed in calming ourselves down without resolving the issue, we have only stored our negative feelings away for another day. The anger response is infinitely more damaging to the angry person than to the target of the anger.

Anger and its physiological consequences have been linked to the development of chronically high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, premature death, as well as the destruction of interpersonal relation-

By RACHEL DRY The Washington Post WASHINGTON – The comic onstage is telling a fart joke, which wouldn’t seem to signal the beginning of a groundbreaking movie or a starmaking turn for an actor.

But one should never underestimate the relatability of flatulence.

Telling those jokes is Donna Stern, the focal point of the new film “Obvious Child,” and she is played by comedian and actor Jenny Slate, who channels her own fluid storytelling style onstage in crafting her character’s voice.

“She sort of picks up on these little nuances of life and what our bodies do and how she is in her relationship,” says Gillian Robespierre, who wrote and directed the movie, which goes nationwide June 27.

That’s what Donna’s stand-up is about, and it’s also the territory that “Obvious Child” covers – what bodies do and how relationships work. Specifically, the film is about what one 20-something woman in New York chooses to do when she is faced with an unplanned pregnancy.

She gets an abortion.

In Washington recently to promote their film, Robespierre and Slate are charming, if a little talked out. The camaraderie between them is easy and evident, as is the fact that their talking points are at the ready. Since this is a movie about abortion, being released into the polarized abortion rights landscape of 2014, that makes sense.

The pair outlines their project as a human story, not one that draws bright lines in a well-trod debate.

“We want to become comfortable with the fact that this is not simple,” Slate says.

“It is everyone’s right, male or female, to have a complex experience,” she adds, even when that experience is having an abortion.

Robespierre knows there can be a Hollywood aversion to telling this particular type of story, although, she says, “a lot of great movies have tackled unplanned pregnancy,” including “Dirty Dancing” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

“Unplanned pregnancy does sometimes end in childbirth or adoption,” she notes, which is the territory – think “Knocked Up” and “Juno” – that Hollywood tends toward.

“We hadn’t seen a feature film talk about it in a way that lifted the stigma and let it be complex and let it be difficult and let it be also safe and actually end with the abortion procedure,” where the main character is “not filled with shame and regret,” Robespierre says of abortion on film.

So that is the movie she made.

One quiet scene toward the end of the film does a lot of work in conveying that message.

It’s in the recovery room at Planned Parenthood, after Donna has had the procedure. A range of women, some young, some bored, one sporting a huge engagement ring, sit quietly in gowns and hospital booties. It’s a moment of “relief and recovery together and not feeling isolated or alone,” Robespierre says.

That Donna is a comedian – not really as a profession, since it’s unclear how much of an income-generating proposition it is – is a useful movie device. Exposition comes with punch lines.

And it lets Slate, 32, showcase her ease on stage, a voice that somehow makes a naive chirp also sound worldly wise.

Slate, who had a brief stint on “Saturday Night Live” and has guest-starred on “Parks and Recreation” and “The Kroll Show,” says she became a stand-up comedian as a way to get into acting.

“It seemed the most active way,” she says. “It seemed like the way I had the most control over how people saw me.”

She honed her voice performing in New York.

Robespierre saw Slate on a show in New York when she was working on the short film version of “Obvious Child” and knew she’d found her lead.

The stand-up scenes in the movie were written by Robespierre and workshopped

by Slate. On the day they shot the opening stand-up scene, Slate says she performed two 30-minute sets back to back. She worked from bullet points, notes Robespierre would call out, and blended it with

her own performance style.

In addition to making a stigma-free movie about abortion, Robespierre, 35, also wanted to make one that gives viewers some of the gooey sweetness that people find so satisfying in romantic comedies.

“I would love it to be something people play all the time – on their sick day when they want to snuggle in bed and be comforted by their favorite romantic comedy,” Robespierre says.

And it does have a lot of what a romcom viewer might want. A grand gesture.

A big reveal. Perfectly timed flowers delivered by Max (Jake Lacy), the onetime and possible future romantic interest who is, in Slate’s description, a “sort of a bro, a handsome-face blond-hair nice-biceps business-school dude.”

The night before Donna is scheduled to have her abortion, she goes onstage, where she is funny and operating on the edge of what it is comfortable to hear people talk about into a mic. She tells the crowd exactly what is happening in that moment in her life.

If someone had told a story like that at the comedy show in Brooklyn that Slate used to run, how does she think it would have gone over?

“If that person was funny, then it would have gone over well. I think the rules apply. If it’s funny, it’s funny.”

Robespierre mulls this question too.

“If I [watched] Donna perform that bit, or anyone perform something that seems maybe too confessional but then they bring you in because it’s heartfelt and touching, I would probably be crying,” Robespierre says.

Good exercise program involves more than aerobic activities Dear Doctor K: You’ve written that a complete exercise program involves a combination of activities. Can you discuss these exercises? How often should I do them?

Dear Reader: All-around fitness calls for a combination of aerobic, strength, flexibility and balance exercises.

Let’s start with aerobic activities, which are great for burning calories and paring down unwanted fat. These activities – think of walking, biking, running and swimming – push large muscles to repeatedly contract and relax.

They temporarily boost your heart rate and breathing, helping to build up your endurance.

Try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as a brisk walk) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week. (I’ve put a description of exercise intensity on my website, AskDoctorK. com, to help you judge how hard you’re working.)

Strength or resistance training works by forcing muscles to strain against an opposing force such as free weights or a resistance band.

Strength exercises build muscles and protect against bone loss. They also preserve functional strength.

Functional strength allows you

Aim to perform a complete strength-training routine two to three times per week. Your routine should work all the major muscle groups. Give your body at least 48 hours to rest between strength-training workouts.

Flexibility exercises like stretching, yoga and Pilates gently reverse the shortening and weakening of muscles that typically comes with age. Shorter, stiffer muscle fibers are more vulnerable to injuries. They contribute to back pain and balance problems.

Flexibility exercises help stretch and strengthen muscles. Wellstretched muscles can more easily achieve their full range of motion, which makes it easier to reach, bend and stoop during daily tasks.

Perform flexibility exercises at least two to three times a week. Hold stretches for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat each stretch four times.

Balance exercises help improve stability. They offer an

excellent defense against falls, which can cause disabling bone fractures. Activities that enhance balance include tai chi, yoga and Pilates. You can do balance exercises two to seven days a week.

All my adult life, I took aerobic exercise very seriously.

I jogged nearly every day. In the past 15 years, I’ve switched to a non-impact type of aerobic exercise with an elliptical cross-trainer. But I never really took the other types of exercise seriously.

When my muscle bulk started to shrink (which it had never done earlier in life), I learned the value of strength training. And when I had a couple of thigh and calf muscle sprains, I learned the value of flexibility training.

I suspect that, before long, I’ll also be doing tai chi regularly.

That’s not because it’s in vogue, but because of the proven health benefits I’ve reported in this column before. And also because a large fraction of the human race has been doing it for centuries – and swears by it.

Your breakup with your boyfriend indicates a problem with time management.

To make your life less stressful, make a plan to get organized. It might be a good idea to identify how you “waste” a few minutes here and there – it will surprise you.

Next, start by making a “To Do” list every morning. Write down the tasks that you need to do that day and give each task a number in the order of importance and begin with the most important. Stress hits hard when an important task is forgotten or time doesn’t permit its completion. Try to also schedule in some “break time” for yourself even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

Suppose West chooses the heart three. East takes the trick with his queen, but what should he do next?

After East opened one heart, South was tempted to pre-empt in spades, keeping his diamond suit as a secret weapon. However, wondering if his side might own the deal, he settled for one spade. West had the values for a two-heart raise. North then made a pre-emptive jump to three spades, showing four spades and a weak hand. (With game-invitational or stronger values, he would have cue-bid three hearts.)

East bid the game he expected to make. South continued to four spades, unsure who could make what, but confident this contract would not be expensive. East doubled for penalty.

It should be clear to West that South is sacrificing. When that is the case at a high level, it is (almost) always right to lead a trump.

If West does that, the contract will fail. West will get back in with a diamond winner and can lead another trump to hold declarer to two ruffs in the dummy and nine tricks in all (six spades, two ruffs and the diamond jack, which can be established).

Similarly, if West leads a heart, East should win the trick and shift to a trump.
