Chronicle welcomes summer interns EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Five interns have joined the Kane County Chronicle editorial team for the summer.

Madeline Happold, Mitch Chamberlain, Katie Kull, Nate Wendt and Anna Dutton started internships at the newspaper within the past few weeks.

A graduate of Geneva High School, Madeline will be a sophomore at DePaul University in Chicago this fall. She is a journalism major.

Mitch is a graduate of Aurora Christian and will be a junior this fall at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is majoring in journalism.

Katie, a graduate of St. Charles East, attends the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. She will be a junior this fall, majoring in print/digital reporting, as well as political science, while also minoring in Spanish.

Another GHS graduate, Nate will be a junior at Augustana College in Rock Island this upcoming school year. He is studying multimedia journalism, mass communication and creative writing.

And Anna, a graduate of Oswego High School, will be a sophomore at Waubonsee Community College this fall.

She is studying mass communications.

Get to know Megan Cruse-Luedke Megan Cruse-Luedke, 30, a resident of Nashotah, Wisconsin, was at the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race with her husband and baby daughter, Millie, when she answered 11 questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Brenda Schory.

Where did you grow up? Fairfax, Virginia Pets? A shih tzu-poodle mix named Penfold.

Pollinators of all types could use our help GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Insect pollinators have been in the news a lot lately and, for the most part, the reports have not been good.

Powerful pesticides, combined with a lack of suitable habitat and consecutive years of severe weather, have taken their toll on these vital organisms.

Apis melifera, our familiar yet nonnative honey bee, today is prone to a range of parasites and pathogens, as well as the mysterious colony collapse disorder – a phenomenon that likely is because of many negative impacts.

And Illinois’ state insect, the monarch butterfly, has experienced steep population declines – estimated at 90 percent – during the past few decades, to where it is now being considered for federal protection as an endangered species.

So you can imagine my joy the other morning when, walking in the Hickory Knolls Natural Area, I spotted a cloud – not of rain, nor smoke, but rather insect pollinators! Several species of solitary bees, along with assorted beetles, were clustered about the flowers of amorpha fruticosa, or indigo bush.

The wee beasties were busy as, well, bees (and beetles), taking full advantage of what must have been a bounty of pollen and nectar.

Before we go any further, I have to tell you, indigo bush is one of my absolute favorite flowering shrubs. I well remember the first time I spotted it, growing along the east bank of the Fox River in North Aurora. Its flowers’ stunning hues of royal purple and deep orange stopped me in my tracks. Equally intriguing was the way these blooms were arranged, in long clusters at the end of the plant’s erect branches.

The leaves reminded me

of a locust tree, but it wasn’t until I got back to my office, and our copy of “Kane County’s Wild Plants and Natural Areas,” the bible of local flora penned by naturalist icon Dick Young, that I found out why. After identifying the plant as indigo bush, I read that it, like honey locust and black locust, is a member of the Fabaceae – the legume family.

Mr. Young also noted indigo bush’s flower spikes are a lacy, stamen-laden blend of orange, purple and blue in early June and are followed by inconspicuous seed clusters soon shredded by small birds.” Sure enough, a month or so later, when I went back to look at this gorgeous new, or at least new-to-me shrub, little remained of the tiny pods where the flowers had formed.

Back to the other day …

I was walking along the natural area trail we refer to as the Archery Road, scurrying to meet up with our group of morning walkers, the Happy Hikers. (Shameless plug: The group is led by ace naturalist Jeanette Joy and meets every Wednesday; summer start time is 8 a.m. at the Discovery Center’s front entrance. Fee is free! Just let me know if you’d like more info.)

At any rate, as I passed a bank of indigo bush, the cloud of insects caught my eye. I halfway expected them to be mosquitoes given the number of pokes I’d already felt that morning. But no.

Although some were not much bigger than a skeeter, the insects were definitely not in search of blood. A wonderful variety of native bees – dark ones, lighter ones; some yellow and black; some green – bounced between the richly hued blooms. Hover flies, whose bold stripes make them look bee-like, swooped in, as well, and moved from flower to flower. A ctenucha moth, its black wings providing stark contrast to its orange head and iridescent dark blue body, fluttered in,

too, to take a sip or two of what was proving to be some popular nectar.

I was standing in front of the flowers, mesmerized, when the hikers came along.

Together, we watched the spectacle and marveled at the activity inspired by pollen and nectar. We were about to move along when another creature joined the party amid the petals. A honey bee!

The newcomer was notable in a number of ways. For one, even though she was just an average-sized worker bee, she appeared giant next to her native counterparts. Her fuzzy, pollen-flecked body actually made the flower spike droop a bit as she crawled around its surface.

The honey bee’s appearance got me wondering from which hive she had come.

Was it one of the dozen or so hives behind Hickory that are managed by our friend, and beekeeper, Chris Saad? Had she flown from the Bee Tree, an old oak with a cavity full of honey bees, also behind our building? Or perhaps another, undiscovered wild colony on the property?

There’s also a chance Ms. Worker Bee originated from Hickory Knolls’ newest exhibit, Pollin8, which features an indoor hive where people

can watch the industrious insects at work. Made possible by a generous donation from the St. Charles Kiwanis Club, the observation hive provides a glimpse into the everyday lives of a few thousand dedicated pollinators.

It’s our hope that the display, combined with education by our interpretive naturalists, can help spread the word that pollinators of all types could use our help.

Limiting the use of lawn chemicals, and opting to

landscape with native plant species – like indigo bush – can’t hurt, and in fact just might help pull our beneficial insects from their current slump. And if that’s not good news, I don’t know what is.

RIVERFEST FUN ARRIVES

Festival runs through Sunday in St. Charles

By MITCH CHAMBERLAIN mchamberlain@shawmedia.com ST CHARLES – A David-and-Goliath-like battle took place at one of the two ice cream-eating contests at this year’s RiverFest.

Hosted by Colonial Cafe, the rules were the kids must eat as many ice cream cups as they could within a minute using a spoon.

This contest was held during the City of St. Charles RiverFest, which began Friday in downtown St. Charles.

The festival continues through Sunday.

In the second contest, Clay Chocke, a 13-year-old boy, was neck and neck with Brodui Murray, who was much smaller in size. Murray, 9, finished his first cup of ice cream before Chocke. One minute later, Chocke and Murray had both devoured two cups of ice cream and were on their way to three.

Out of 10 total participants, Murray was declared the winner of the contest, with Chocke coming in a close second. Murray said going into this contest, his strategy was to “get a big spoonful and chug it down.”

This was the first time Murray had participated in this contest, and he said he may return next year to compete again. Chocke said in previous years, he had won this very contest.

“I really needed the win,” Chocke said, but was defeated by Murray, whom he described as a “monster” at eating ice cream.

Along with ice cream-eating contests, attendants of this year’s RiverFest can attend a demonstration of Scottish and Highland games hosted by Jack Axe Inc. The demonstrators of these games are Eric Klein, president of Jack Axe, and Eric Winkler, chief ax.

While all of the demonstrations were prepared for the outdoor event, the rain Friday caused both of the day’s scheduled demonstrations to be canceled.

For the upcoming demonstrations at RiverFest, Winkler said the plan is to show demonstrations of games, such as the ax throw or the caber toss, and then run through them all at once as a course.

Winkler said the caber toss is one of his favorite games because it is “a feat of strength.”

Normally, the caber being used would be just under 20 feet and weigh 180 pounds, and the participant would have to flip it end over end, but Winkler said for the Jack Axe Games cabers of many sizes will be provided so everyone of all ages can participate.

The ax throw is Klein’s favorite game because it is a skill without any other practical application. Klein and Winkler said they take the time to throw axes to be prepared for the ax throw demonstration. As for the other demonstrations, Klein said they were prepared because “we are in good physical condition.”

These demonstrations are a preview of the first Jack Axe Games and Festival on Aug. 29 and Aug. 30.

Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox Inc., said other new attractions at this year’s RiverFest include the Jesse White Tumblers and the Rescue Remembrance Project.

The Jesse White Tumblers will perform at the Plaza Green venue at 1 p.m. today, while the Rescue Remembrance Project will be at the same location today and Sunday.

Another new event coming to this year’s RiverFest is the Anderson Animal Shelter Jewelry Faire.

After losing its location in Geneva’s Festival of the Vine last year, Holly Alcala, director of development at Anderson Animal Shelter, approached Farris about being a part of RiverFest, and a new activity was added.

Farris said, “We will be featuring over 4,000 pieces of jewelry,” and all of the net proceeds will go to Anderson Animal Shelter. The Jewelry Faire is in the St. Charles Municipal Center back lot at 2 E. Main St. All weekend long, there will be several bands performing at the BMO Harris Bank main stage on South Riverside Avenue, along with a live taping of a radio show at noon Sunday.

An “open entertainment street” will be on First Street, meaning a section of the street will be left completely open, and events, such as the Jack Axe Games demonstration

and Festival of the Horse and Drum, will take place there.

Farris said the must-see event at RiverFest is the Dragon Boat Races because there are few places in Illinois where these races occur.

“We have one of the coolest activities at any festival I’ve ever been to,” Farris said.

“Festivals are incredibly fun and have great ideas, but I have not seen one that can top our dragon boats.”

Farris said her favorite event at RiverFest was the second annual Special Family Night at St. Charles RiverFest, which was Wednesday, because, “It starts off the festival on the right note.” She wanted to make sure the event was all about special-needs families and providing them with a fun, safe environment.

The event was in Lincoln Park.

While she has no concerns about the events at RiverFest, Farris said, “Keeping everyone safe at our events is always at the foremost of my mind.”

BATAVIA – A Batavia woman has been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty.

Julie Brungard-Giordano, 48, of the 200 block of North Island Avenue, Batavia, had been charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 felony, and four counts of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.

Batavia police found Brungard-Giordano’s dogs inside a van on April 2 in a parking lot just north of the Batavia Police Department at 100 N. Island Ave. Six female dogs and two male dogs were inside the

closed van. All of the dogs were dogo argentinos. One female and one male dog had been found dead inside the van. Kane County Animal Control took the remaining six Julie dogs to an anBrungardimal hospital Giordano in Aurora for treatment.

One of the female dogs died while en route to the animal hospital.

Brungard-Giordano pleaded guilty June 3 to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals. She also was ordered to pay almost $2,000 in restitution and fines, and was given credit for time served in the Kane County Jail.

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz had said the dogs that were found in the van appeared to have been suffering from extreme dehydration.

Shakou Cares program to benefit local charities editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A modern Japanese restaurant that opened this year in St. Charles plans to help four local charities, according to a news release.

Shakou, at 312 W. Main St., St. Charles, will bring the Shakou Cares program, from June 24 to 27, to Kane County by donating a portion of lunch and dinner proceeds to the four charities.

On June 24, a portion of the proceeds will go toward CASA Kane County, followed

by Generation Rescue on June 25, the Bryan and Amanda

Bickell Foundation on June 26 and the Living Well Cancer Resource Center on June 27, the release states.

“As a part of the community, we believe in doing what we can to support local nonprofit organizations,” wrote Ed Hartigan, Shakou’s St. Charles operations manager and owner, along with partners Aleks Dupor and Adam Garvanian, in the release.

“This is just the beginning of our continuing efforts to help those in need.”

Shakou Cares was founded in 2013 with the opening of the first Shakou restaurant in Libertyville. Since then, dozens of nonprofit organizations have

benefited from the program, according to the release.

The dinner menu, created by chef Sang Choi, includes hot and cold appetizers, soups, salads, by-the-piece nigiri/ sashimi and maki, signature maki rolls and beef, chicken, fish, noodle and seafood cooked entrées, the release states.

The lunch menu also features a sushi bar, kids menu and guest favorites, such as Bento boxes and salads.

Honeywell System Sensor to lay off 252 people in STC

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A company plans to lay off 252 people at its manufacturing facility in St. Charles, according to a state of Illinois report.

Manufacturing operations at the Honeywell System Sensor facility, 3825 Ohio Ave., St. Charles, are being moved to other Honeywell manufacturing sites, according to a statement from the company.

A total of 252 workers will be affected, with the first layoff date scheduled for July 27, according to the May Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, report.

The last layoffs will be on

an unspecified date during the first quarter of 2016, the report states.

The decision to move manufacturing operations was announced to employees in January, according to the company statement. Only manufacturing jobs were affected in St. Charles, the statement read.

“All nonproduction employees in that location will continue to work out of the St. Charles site,” officials wrote in the statement. “In the meantime, Honeywell will provide support to the employees affected by the transition, and they are eligible to apply for other roles in Honeywell.”

ST. CHARLES – Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles will honor veterans and current members of the military with a “We Believe in Freedom” breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. on Flag Day, Sunday. The church is at 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles.

As part of its “We Believe” series of sermons and events for 2015, Baker church invites all Fox Valley veterans and current members of the military for pancakes and all the trimmings. The church’s United Methodist Men’s group will be the chefs for the day.

On June 21, the church will offer a pet blessing, with a particular emphasis on therapy animals.

The final sermon in the series, on June 28, will address the freedom to choose God over the world for guidance and inspiration. The cost of the breakfast is a $5 suggested donation. Hache Modern Brasserie plans to open in July. The space is the former location of Urban Grille, which closed in 2013.

Hache owners Peter Karl Youngren and Irina Haydon, of Naperville, also own Paris Bistro in Naperville. Youngren said Hache will have a French influence.

“We’re going to keep with the French theme that we’ve had in Naperville and carry

that into Geneva,” Youngren said. “We love Geneva. Geneva is a great location and a great town. As well as we’ve done in Naperville, we’re looking to do even better in Geneva.”

Hache, which will serve lunch and dinner, is on target to open in July, he said.

The restaurant will be using fresh, locally grown food to create a farm-to-table dining experience, Youngren said.

“We met with some of the local farmers there, and we love their produce,” Youn-

gren said. “I personally sampled the mass majority of it. It will be a very small distance from farm to table. So people are really going to enjoy dining with the local ingredients.”

But good food doesn’t have to be pricey, Youngren said.

“It’s certainly going to be palatable to anyone and everyone,” he said. “We want to make it reasonable. We want to make it a great dining experience for people who want to have a nice night out, but everything is going to be reasonably priced.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Singers’ final concerts of the season will feature choral arrangements of folk songs from the British Isles and North America in performances at 7:30 p.m. today and at 3 p.m.

The two-concert series, titled “Bushes and Briars,” takes its name from one of the songs.

Good Cents marks 25 years in business

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For 25 years, Good Cents Children in Geneva has offered new and gently used clothes, toys and accessories to generations of cost-conscious families.

The store’s owner, Shirley Stopka, said she and a neighbor, Diane Upton, started the business in 1990. Upton eventually went back to teaching, but Stopka kept it going, now marking a quarter-century in business.

To celebrate, the store is giving away merchandise through a raffle on its Facebook page through June 28.

Customers can enter everyday by commenting once on the daily photo.

“We have a winner every day,” Stopka said.

All prizes can be seen in the front windows of the store, at 220 W. State St. Prizes can be picked up after June 28.

“It’s a fun, unique store that carries everything you can think of for kids,” Stopka said. “If you cannot find it retail – like a boy’s bow tie – we’ve got it. We have hard-tofind things – fun, interesting things that are new things or in resale.”

Items come to the store both new and on consignment every day, she said.

“That is the thrill,” Stopka said. “You never know what you’ll find. Every day is a new inventory.”

The neighbors started Good Cents as avid bargain hunters who wanted to earn some extra money for their

families, she said. They first opened a small storefront in the plaza next to the Dairy Queen, outgrew that location and moved to South Second Street next to the Geneva Public Library.

Good Cents outgrew that location and moved to its current location.

In 1998, the business expanded again, this time to the lower level, featuring a separate area for teens called The Back Alley, and an area for birthday parties.

“We have 18 employees and over 8,000 square feet for the public,” Stopka said.

The store participates in a charity event every winter, partnering with Channing Elementary School in Elgin to provide winter coats for children there, and it also sends a full van of clothes, toys and books to Two Rivers Head Start, a program for at-risk preschool children, Stopka said.

Batavia alum eliminated from ‘The Bachelorette’

BATAVIA – Batavia High School graduate Clint Arlis was eliminated this week from the ABC-TV show “The Bachelorette.”

“This is not somebody I want to marry,” bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe said in sending Arlis home during Monday’s episode.

Clint Arlis “The Bachelorette” is a competitive reality dating game show.

Arlis is a 2005 Batavia High School graduate. According to Arlis’ profile for the show, the 27-year-old is an architectural engineer in Chicago and someone who “believes in passion and the idea of when I’m with someone, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.”

During Monday’s show, Arlis’ relationship with fellow contestant JJ Lane also unraveled. The episode showed Arlis arguing with Lane. On a previous episode, Arlis said, “I feel like I’m connecting with JJ probably more than Kaitlyn right now.”

Arlis had acknowledged during the show things were unlikely to work out with Bristowe.

“I kind of in the back of my head knew that she was not the right girl for me,” he said.

OUR VIEW: THUMBS-UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs-down to stifling free speech.

Just as important as protecting popular opinion under the First Amendment is protecting unpopular opinion, a notion that Waubonsee Community College became all too familiar with last week, when the college settled a federal free speech lawsuit for $132,000.

The school violated the freedom-of-speech rights of Wayne Lela and John McCartney when it denied the on-campus distribution of fliers by anti-gay group members that raise awareness of what they believe are the moral and health dangers of homosexual intercourse.

Although we oppose Waubonsee’s restriction of free speech, we are empathetic toward the school’s desire to avert on-campus discrimination.

It’s worth noting, as U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman issued an opinion that “Allowing plaintiffs to exercise their First Amendment rights on WCC’s campus does not amount to the college endorsing [the] plaintiff’s views or speech.”

Even if some may consider a message to be hate speech, it’s still protected speech.

Thumbs-up to Water Street Studios for continuously reinventing the ways in which it supports the arts.

In March, the Batavia-based nonprofit merged art with ecology during the “Climate Crisis: Solutions” exhibition – a meeting of minds for both the artistic and scientific communities – which tackled the global issue of climate change through artwork, symposiums and the written word. It was the first program in its “Artists as Visionaries” series, which tasks artists with responding to an issue that affects the current culture.

On June 5, during Water Street’s latest “Matchmaker” event, artists and prospective patrons mingled in a networking environment meant to foster the client-artist relationship and lead to commissioned work for the artist.

The inventive event served as a prequel to Water Street’s “Blind Date” masquerade fundraiser in November, when the original pieces commissioned during the “Matchmaker” event will be unveiled to clients and the community.

A win-win situation for all parties involved, the funds received from commissioned pieces will be allocated evenly to the artist and Water Street, and patrons will receive a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Of the “Matchmaker” event, Water Street Studios board member Laura Spicer said through alternative fundraising efforts, the organization is “making the artist-to-patron relationship more accessible.”

Also making art more accessible to the public is the St. Charles Arts Council’s campaign for a downtown arts center that would provide a space for artists to create and audiences to admire.

It’s a good time to be an artist living in Kane County.

Obama is right to send more troops to fight Islamic State BLOOMBERG NEWS Just days after President Barack Obama admitted he didn’t have a “complete strategy” for forging an Iraqi army that can defeat Islamic State, his administration has decided to send in more troops. Now they need to be allowed to do more.

The White House is deploying several hundred more U.S. advisers to train Iraqi troops and tribal Sunni fighters to take back Ramadi, the capital of Anbar Province, which fell to jihadist forces last month. The goal of such training would be twofold: Improve the Iraqi military, which has twice turned tail in the face of jihadist onslaughts, and motivate Sunni Muslims to fight against their fellow Sunnis of Islamic State.

Unfortunately, the new U.S. advisers will be limited in their efforts to train Iraqi troops and Sunni fighters for the mission. Like the other 3,000 Americans already working at Iraqi training bases, they will be forbidden from accompanying their charges into battle. Also out of bounds is gathering intelligence for air support.

Without such spotters on the ground, airstrikes may have to be called off when friend and foe are fighting at close quarters in urban areas.

These restrictions have been a mistake from the start, one that Iran – which also has sent advisers to help the Iraqis take on Islamic State – has not made. Partly as a result, the sectarian Shiite militias that Iran works with have been more effective than the national

army in which the U.S. has invested so much time and so many billions.

All such expansions of the U.S.’s role in Iraq could be debated more clearly if Congress and the White House could agree on a new law authorizing the use of force against Islamic State.

The latest effort collapsed in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

So, the Obama administration is acting under the authorizations for the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions of 2001 and 2003. This is not ideal, but the administration is right to do everything it can to ensure the U.S. military has the authority and the resources it needs to help Iraq defeat Islamic State.

Otherwise, the next president may not have an Iraqi ally to support.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

For now, the plane moves to Decatur for maintenance and eastward after that, but Sommars assured the participants this wouldn’t be the only opportunity to fly.

versary of D-Day. On the same day, Beau Biden was buried. On many websites, people posted horrendously cruel comments about this 46-year-old combat veteran and his father. I’ve been to Colleville-sur-Mer and walked through the military cemetery where over 9,000 of American boys are buried. Every alabaster cross and Star of David is in an absolute, perfect position and faces west toward their American home that they never returned to. We were a different nation then, a much better nation. I wonder what those vicious citizens, writing their meanness and ugliness, would say to the boys lying there if they were to ask why?

If America is so bad that you cannot keep yourselves from disgracing yourselves and your country, there are 9,000-plus young heroes that would gladly change places with you.

Remember, their headstones face you. Are you proud of yourselves?

WEST CHICAGO – Rain kept eight military veterans from The Holmstad in Batavia in a holding pattern for most of Friday while they waited for the clouds to part so they could take to the air.

Six veterans, Carl Pierson, Jim Pioch, Jim Crawford, Pierre Croissant, Wayne Glassman, and Bob Helin, were selected through a lottery system to receive a ride in a 1942 World War II biplane through the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation.

Jim Perry and John Faust were selected as alternates.

The foundation started four years ago as a way to “honor U.S. military veterans living in senior communi-

EAST PEORIA – Expect to see glittery silver warpaint adorning Kaneland softball players’ faces at EastSide Centre this morning.

It’s the last day of the Knights’ season, and after the breakthrough Class 3A playoff run the team has enjoyed, a wardrobe change is out of the question.

“It does absolutely nothing,” junior third baseman Meg Cohrs said, “but we’ve been wearing it since our first regional game, and you can’t break the voodoo.”

Five-game postseason winning streaks apparently are more fragile. Tears smeared some players’ otherwise menacing game faces Friday afternoon after Marengo edged Kaneland, 2-1, in a taut state semifinal.

“It’s tough, for sure,” Knights senior right-hander Angie Morrow said, “but I’m proud of us. We definitely fought back, and that’s what we needed to do.”

Limited to only four hits – singles from Courtney Davis, Cohrs, Aly Jesionowski and Morgan Sikon – Kaneland (249) still threatened against Indians sophomore ace Mariah Dionne late in the game.

One batter after Jesionowski drove home Hannah Theobald with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, pulling Kaneland to within the final margin, No. 3 hitter Paige Kuefler, the Knights’ senior catcher, batted as the potential goahead run.

Instead, Marengo escaped trouble as Kuefler grounded crisply to shortstop. It was the first runner of only two Kaneland stranded against Dionne, who spaced four hits, three strikeouts and zero walks.

“Oh, that was a bite in the butt,” Kuefler said. “You

know, no matter what situation you’re in, you should always go up to the plate with high confidence, and I did. I was smiling, and I put the bat on the ball. But, I obviously didn’t wait for it like I should have. But there’s nothing else I could have done.”

Marengo scored two runs – one earned – with two outs in the third inning, striking after catcher Jessica Turner and right fielder Veronica Ruelius reached base on an infield hit and walk, respectively.

A wild pitch on a 2-2 delivery to Dionne put two runners in scoring position, setting the stage for an RBI single to right field. A second run scored on the play via error, as Kuefler threw off line to second base trying to nab Dionne trying to advance on the throw from the outfield.

“It was a good hit by [Dionne] to hit it to the right side,” Morrow said,”so that was smart by her.”

Kaneland caught a tough break in the bottom of the third, with Ruelius darting to catch a Theobald liner and throw to first for an inning-ending, 9-3 double play.

Ruelius, a preferred walkon at Illinois, entered the game with 17 home runs but arguably wound up wielding a more effective glove. Dionne induced several fly balls to right field as she mixed pitches on the outer half against the Knights’ right-handed batters.

Morrow held Ruelius to an 0 for 2 day, fanning her in the first inning while walking her in the third before a fifth-inning flyout to Cohrs. Morrow scattered six hits, eight strikeouts and two walks.

“I said this before the game and I would have said it even if we would have lost: You put Kaneland’s stats over here and you put Marengo’s stats here and you shuffle them around, you would never know whose team was who, because we’re so identical, you know,” Indians coach Dwain Nance said.

“Their 3 and 4 hitters are really good. Our 3 and 4 hitters are good. Their pitcher is really good, our pitcher is really good.

You could go position by position. So I knew it was going to come down to a one-run game.

It’s just whoever made the mistake or got the clutch hit.”

Kaneland lamented lost chances against Dionne after catching up to her deliveries more than most opponents this season.

Patient fans ‘very, very excited’ after delay

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com EAST PEORIA – Two different groups at Friday’s opening Class 3A softball state semifinal separated themselves by wearing fluorescent yellow T-shirts.

If Kaneland fans could have performed the duties of the EastSide Centre grounds crew any earlier, many would have obliged.

As it stood, many of the brightly-clad Knights backers, whose newly-printed shirts read “DINGER!” on the back, sported another slogan as showers and thunderstorms pushed Friday’s first pitch against Marengo back about four hours, to 2 p.m.

“It’s a waiting game,” said Robbie Weber, father of Kaneland sophomore shortstop Morgan Weber.

Although several Kaneland parents and fans traveled to the Knights’ hotel in nearby Pekin on Thursday night, the anticipation especially mounted for those such as Robbie Weber, who commuted Friday morning.

Brigid Wickness, aunt of junior third baseman Meg Cohrs and a 1997 Kaneland graduate, left for East Peoria around 7 a.m. Friday with her children Conor, 6, and Aislinn, 4, in tow.

Receiving updates from her sister, Molly Cohrs, Meg’s mom, Wickness and Co. soon detoured to the hotel.

“Played games. Colored,” Wickness grinned. “Fun stuff, you know.”

At shortly after 9:30 a.m.

IHSA officials officially moved Friday’s start time to 1 p.m. Less than three hours later, shortly after the gates had opened, the skies followed suit, prompting another change to 2 p.m.

Another shared feeling among the group: The holy grail of all this waiting would be worth it.

“They’re an awesome group of girls,” Wickness said.

“We’re very, very excited to be here.”

The Knights, in turn, beamed about their well-travled fans’ efforts.

Kaneland played regionals in Lemont and sectionals at Montini before trekking to the Ballpark at Rosemont for the

supersectional, encountering vocal supporters at every stop.

“They were awesome,” senior catcher Paige Kuefler said. “I love Kaneland.”

Stay in place: Third-place games – especially those with early wake-up calls – traditionally bring inherent motivational challenges.

The Knights don’t see themselves giving in this morning against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, a 5-3, 10-inning loser to Washington in Friday’s second semifinal.

“We’re hoping to take home the third-place trophy,” senior second baseman Morgan Sikon said. “We want to come out on top tomorrow, for sure,

play our best game and end the season on a win.”

Knights coach Peter Goff has lauded his team’s resolve and level-headedness throughout the spring, from the time the season started with Courtney Davis’ five-inning no-hitter against Burlington Central in March.

“I’ve got a bunch of great girls. I’ve got a great staff, great parents, just a great community,” Goff said. “What can you say? I’m very proud. But I told them we’re not done.

You’ve got to come with that mindset tomorrow. Just like we’ve said, you’ve got to believe that we can do this, and if you don’t believe, then you’ve

got to think about else to do.”

Chance meeting: Marengo coach Dwain Nance, a 1994 Kaneland graduate, served as a Knights assistant coach during the program’s most recent state tournament trip in 2000.

Nance, a Kaneland math teacher from 1999 to 2001, coached under Dennis Hansen then. Nance later opposed Hansen after taking the Indians job before the 2007 season. Hansen was a Marengo product.

“So we’d play each other, he was coaching against his alma mater and I was coaching against mine,” Nance said. “So that was kind of neat.”

JOLIET – The St. Francis baseball team had the situation it wanted. Although down a run, the Spartans had runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh inning, with its No. 3-4-5 batters coming up.

After No. 3 batter Will Purdom fouled off two sacrifice bunt attempts, the plan to bunt a third time backfired.

Purdom bunted foul, but the ball was caught by Nazareth Academy catcher Shane Gipson, who fired to second base to double off Tim Lilly.

The Spartans’ rally was ended as they fell to the Roadrunners, 2-1, in a Class 3A state semifinal at Silver Cross Field.

“All year long we have been the team that does the little things,” St. Francis coach Nick Hall said. “We didn’t get a bunt down when we needed to, and in certain situations, we just didn’t do the things that have gotten us to this point.”

St. Francis (26-10) had its chances and spoiled a strong start from senior ace Jason Sullivan. The senior righthander and Central Michigan commit was also the most productive Spartan at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a walk in that seventh inning.

Purdom’s eventual double play bunt did not end the game, however. Senior catcher Brett Whelton was next and grounded a ball to second that was booted. Jake Radel’s floating line drive was caught at second base to officially end the game and the Spartans’ hopes for a state championship.

St. Francis, which still has outscored their playoff opponents, 57-4, will face Morgan Park in today’s third-place game.

After the start of the game was pushed back more than 2½ hours because of rain, the teams faced another 43-minute rain delay in the bottom of the third inning.

Nazareth Academy vs. Highland in state championship, 11:30 a.m. and the Spartans, with Nazareth (32-8) getting the first two runners on base, Sullivan said it was tough to stay in a rhythm.

“It was pretty tough for most of the day,” Sullivan said. “When the weather is

like this, you try to stay soft (throwing the ball) the whole day. During the delays, I just tried to relax my arm, but it was definitely tough.”

Senior Nick Dama said energy at the start of games has been a big key for the Spartans.

Dama, who reached base in two of his three plate appearances, said the rain delay kind of stopped that momentum “We tried to stay loose, but I think we were so anxious to play,” Dama said. “We lost a lot of that energy we had right when the game started. But that doesn’t make an excuse for not executing, and there’s more than one play where we didn’t get the job done. I don’t think we look at any one play,

but we just didn’t execute today and that’s baseball. … It happens.”

The Spartans had the lead at that point, scoring their only run of the game on three straight first-inning singles

by Sullivan, Purdom and Whelton. Sullivan’s headfirst dive at home just beat Gipson’s tag to give the Spartans the early advantage.

But that was the only run that St. Francis scored against Roadrunners starter Donald Kelly. The senior lefthander finished the day with 11 strikeouts. The Spartans left nine runners on base, while out-hitting the Roadrunners, 7-5.

It will be hard, however, to look too far past the bunt play

with Purdom in the seventh.

But Hall stressed that, with his best bunter at the plate, he would still make the same call over and over.

“I had all the confidence in the world in him,” Hall said of Purdom. “It stings a little bit knowing the situation, but that’s the position you want to be in. He’s a great kid, a great athlete and it was just a fluke play. But if we could get that chance again, I would run the exact same play with two strikes.”

The eventual game-winning run was scored as Nazareth’s Kyle Kane hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Ryan Kramer, who led off the inning with a booming double off the wall in left center field.

Lynn hangs up the racket, doesn’t lose love for game ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber The end of a playing career can be a pretty upsetting thing.

But at least for some, their connection to the game continues.

Christian Lynn, a St. Charles native and graduate of Elgin Academy, saw his collegiate tennis career come to an end earlier this spring.

Christian A graduating Lynn senior, he knew it would be the end of him taking the court as a competitor. But Lynn has managed to stay involved, moving from playing tennis to coaching it.

“It was comforting because kind of saying goodbye to the game after my four years of it being my life was really tough,” Lynn said. “But knowing that I would have some outlet to play or be around the game helped.”

Lynn didn’t know he was going to wind up coaching the sport he loves when his final season began. He said that the business of travel and competitions – combined with the fact that his team had a new coach, the fourth Lynn had played for in four seasons at NCAA Division III Bridgewater College in Virginia – had a chaotic effect. But once an opportunity presented itself at season’s end, he decided to keep demonstrating his love for tennis as a coach and help pass that love on to others at various places around Virginia.

“I love coaching because I love everybody I get to coach,” he said. “I love meeting new people, everyone from little 5-year-olds to 65-year-olds.

It’s a fun time to be out there.

However, sometimes you want to jump in there and do it yourself and say, ‘Here’s how you do it.’ But you’ve got to pull back sometimes. But it’s been good so far.”

SPORTS BRIEF Rosary offering summer athletic camps

Christian Lynn, a St. Charles native, still is getting his tennis fix in as a coach after recently graduating from Bridewater (Virginia) College.

As Lynn mentioned, facing the end of his college career was a challenge. He said it took a while to hit him that things were coming to an end.

“Once we got into the final stretch, the in-conference matches that were all in the area, playing in places I’d played before, that’s when I started realizing. Seeing all the people who I’d played over the years and all of that, it was kind of like, ‘Oh man, this is kind of the last time that I get to do this.’ But it wasn’t until the last couple weeks where it started getting really tough to stay focused on being competitive enough, just trying to enjoy my time or dwell on the

fact that it was coming to an end.”

Lynn, who described himself as “academically driven,” has two degrees: one in applied physics and another in psychology. He’s in the midst of a job search while he’s coaching. But his current gig allows him to do something he won’t get to do in those other fields, and that’s staying close to the game he loves.

Stanford sophomore men’s golfer Maverick McNealy is named for a Ford automobile, so what better place to tee off than Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, whose grounds also include a collection of vintage automobiles? A member of Team USA in this week’s Palmer Cup – an international collegiate match play event conceived by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer in 1997 – McNealy has relished the chance to play at the course that will host the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s championships in 2017.

Speaking with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, the California-raised McNealy spoke about Rich Harvest, his major and his family. Here’s an edited transcript:

How have you liked the grounds and everything?

It’s been absolutely incredible. This is just incredibly fun golf, and Mr. Rich has done a great job and been so nice to let us come here and play. The golf course is amazing, in perfect shape. It’s just so nice to have everything here on site, everyone here on site. They’ve really rolled out the red carpet

for us this week, so it’s been awesome.

When were you selected for the team?

It was a month and a half ago, I think. … I just remember we were walking out of team workouts and I checked my phone, and I saw that I had made the team. So that was pretty exciting. I’m really excited about the group of guys we have for this year.

It’s a really talented group of players. I’m excited to be with them.

You guys are coming from around the country, and even some Europeans play collegiately stateside. How many do you know?

Weekend Chit-chat with STANFORD GOLFER MAVERICK MCNEALY hanging with for a week and competing with. I can’t think of a better group of guys to do it with.

What had you heard about Rich Harvest Farms before this week?

It’s a group of guys that you’re looking forward to

I’ve heard it’s quirky, but from my experience these first few days, it’s a great kind of quirky. It’s not unfair. It’s a very fair golf course, and it rewards good golf shots, and it’s a really fun and interesting layout that makes you think and has a lot of unusual shots that you don’t get anywhere else, which is really cool. I’m excited to play it in competition. It’s in great shape.

But I’m also excited because they’re having the NCAA national championships here

Just about all of them. If you cherry pick kind of the best player from all the best teams in the country, this is the group you get. That’s what’s been fun playing No. 1 on the team this year, is you get to play with the No. 1s from all the other teams, so I’ve played with just about all of these guys, which is fun.

How much does that boost camaraderie?

my senior year, in two years. … What better way to see it than under competition, when you’re a little bit under the gun? Tournament set-up and a little bit of a pressure situation, that’s how you really learn a golf course. It will be great preparation for whenever I play it down the road.

Stanford golf has a great history. How much did you follow it growing up?

I grew up 10 minutes from Stanford, actually. I played the Stanford golf course and I’ve seen just about all of the Stanford golfers in the last 10, 15 years go through. I’ve always wanted to be a part of it, and it’s just really cool to have the opportunity to play for Stanford. It’s been kind of my dream school my whole life.

You’re studying science and engineering. Does that turn you into a quote-unquote tactician on the course?

Well, I really dive deep into the statistical analysis of my game. What I enjoy doing when I’m interning or working at a company and what I enjoy doing in school and what I do a lot with my golf game is taking a lot of data and information and kind of

distilling it down into something that’s useful. For me in golf, that’s just going through every shot I hit and figuring out what I did that makes me play well, what I did that makes me play poorly and what can I do to make it better and keep playing well.

Have you drank many Arnold Palmers in your day?

Plenty of times, plenty of times. You must be doing something right if you have a drink named after you. … I can’t drink it in the afternoon, because I can’t sleep if I have too much caffeine from the iced tea, but it’s great.

What’s the story behind your first name?

So, my dad jokes that my mom had a crush on Tom Cruise, if you’ve ever seen “Top Gun.” But the real story is my three brothers and I are all named after American cars. My dad grew up in Detroit and my grandfather worked for American Motors, so we’re named Maverick, Dakota, Colt and Scout. … I’m the oldest of four. All of them golf, all of them play hockey and those three are black belts in taekwondo. I’m the only one in college.

Random hugs for perfect strangers

I blame Noah.

After all, if he’d just returned those blasted, too-large muffin cups to the grocery store like I’d asked him to when he was there a few hours earlier (I do love having a teenager who drives!), I would not have been standing there returning them myself when my friend “Barb” walked past.

Whom I then felt the impulse to hug. Which would have been totally fine, except IT WASN’T BARB. (Oy vey, name changed to protect the innocent). Yeah. I threw my arms around a complete stranger at the grocery store. The worst part? When she backed away, startled, I thought Barb was messing with me. (Oh, that Barb, always such a pistol!) And besides, how many Barbs could there be?

“Barb! Ha!” I said. And then I tried to hug her again.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose I was. But I was foiled once more as Barb’s doppelgänger backed away a second time. Contrary to my Facebook friend’s suggestion that I probably made this woman’s day, um, it seems I didn’t.

“I’m not Barb,” she said, quickly shaking her head. “And I’m not used to strangers touching me.”

Right. Of course not. I felt so badly for her, as she was clearly rattled, and apologized profusely. What a train wreck.

“Oh my lord. I can’t believe I just did that, and TWICE!” I gushed to Linda, the manager handling my return.

She insisted that I’d made a perfectly reasonable mistake.

“But twice! I tried to hug her twice!”

“I’d have hugged you,” she volunteered, slapping my refund onto the counter.

Gotta love that Linda. What a gem. But not everyone is game for random hugs from perfect strangers. I thanked Linda for her effort to reassure me (I could have hugged her!

Lucky for her, there was a counter in the way) and ducked into the cookie aisle for a giggle. (Oh, and for those insanely tasty fudge mint cookies by Back to Nature that, frankly, taste even better than the Girl Scouts’ Thin Mints -– sorry, girls! – but I digress.)

I was still clutching my hand to my heart, when I pushed my cart around the corner and there she was, my Barb doppelgänger!

Her eyes big as moons, she put her cellphone up to her ear and began talking. She probably thought I was stalking her and dialed 911. Ahh! It was awful. I couldn’t get away from her fast enough.

Oh well. The embarrassment didn’t really set in until later, though, when I realized that after I’d spotted her that first time, elated as I was to see my friend Barb, I literally chasséed over to greet her.

Yes, in my effort to intercept her as she walked past the customer service desk, I chasséed. Twice. I chasséed, for Pete’s sake, people. First time in what, 20 years?

Yup, Noah owes me. Big time.

Beginning bin composting Instead of paying to have your yard and kitchen waste hauled away, and then paying for them again when you buy compost for your yard, save money by composting them yourself!

Compost, also called humus, is made when living organisms break down organic material. The main composters are the ones you can’t see – the microorganisms. These decomposers use the carbon and nitrogen in the organic material as food, so it’s important to keep these elements in a ratio that supports them.

A carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of about 25 to 1 is ideal for decomposition. All you have to remember is that carbon materials are usually dry and brown, such as leaves and twigs, and nitrogen materials are wet and green, such as fresh grass clippings and food scraps.

On a volume basis, about one-third of the materials should be the “green” and the rest should the “brown.” Avoid putting in too much of the “green” nitrogen materials because that’s when the organisms that make ammonia gas take over making an unpleasant odor.

The easiest way to start out composting is to buy a commercially available bin called a holding unit. Holding units can be purchased locally, including at the Kane County Extension Office.

Some features to look for are a locking top (to keep it from becoming a raccoon feeder) and easy access to the finished compost, often by a sliding door

New material is added to the top of the bin and as it decomposes, the more finished compost will be at the bottom. If you want to hurry along the process, you can mix the materials within the bin.

Otherwise, the bin needs little maintenance, but it may take six months to two years to produce finished compost.

Set up your bin on bare ground to encourage microorganism contact with the materials. Thinly layer materials in this order: “brown,” “green,” shovel of topsoil, like making yard lasagna! Be sure not to overdo the “green” and don’t add meat, bones, fats or fish as these attract animals.

Compost is ready to use when it is dark brown, fluffy and crumbly with an earthy odor. Put it around your yard to improve the soil structure and reduce the need for fertilizer. By using what you would usually throw away, you can get something from nothing!

Library launches ‘Read to the Rhythm’ ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library recently launched its summer reading program, “Read to the Rhythm,” running through Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The summer reading program is a library annual tradition. Last year, a total of 3,131 books were logged, states a news release. Registered program participants who read or listen to books, will receive coupons, a T-shirt and can enter weekly drawings.

Adults and young adults can register at the reader services or adult reference desk. Participants who

sign-in with a book log at least once between Wednesday, June 10, and Aug. 5, will receive a chance to win prizes. Readers finishing grades six through 12 can register in adult or youth services.

Infants, preschool children and elementary students can select from one of five, age-appropriate reading clubs in youth services at the “Book Club Desk.”

Biking is great exercise for kids and their families Dear Doctor K: Summer is here, and my children are out all afternoon riding their bicycles. What can I do to make sure they’re as safe as possible?

Dear Reader: Bicycling is a wonderful activity for children – and for families. As with any sport, bicycling carries a risk of injury.

Proper safety skills and equipment are essential for all children before heading out on the road.

It can be tricky to find a safe place to teach your child to ride a bike. The streets near your home may be too busy. My father taught me to ride a bike in the same place he taught me to drive a car: the parking lot of a large department store when the store was closed.

By far the most important safety measure is the use of a properly fitting bicycle helmet every time your child rides a bike. Helmets can reduce the risk of serious head injuries by 85 percent. And many states – wisely – require helmet use.

All helmets made in the United States today must meet standards set by the Consumer Products

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Safety Commission. It’s important to make sure your child’s helmet fits properly. A helmet that is too big or too loose will not provide the appropriate protection upon impact. A helmet needs to be worn in a level position, with the chin straps snug enough that the helmet does not move out of place when pushed from the side, front or back. Many helmets come with foam fitting pads of various sizes that can be placed inside the helmet and adjusted as the child’s head grows.

If possible, purchase your child’s helmet at a bike shop.

The people who work there can make sure it fits properly. At the same time, get your child’s bike checked for any mechanical problems and make sure the bike is the right size for your child.

Most bike shops can do this for a small fee.

Children must also understand and follow the rules of the road.

Be sure to go over the rules with your children when they are learning to ride. Review them periodically. Riding on the right side of the road and using hand signals appropriately may be the difference between avoiding an accident and causing one.

Many communities have set aside bike lanes or bike routes for riding. If these are available, encourage your child to use them instead of a busy street. They are much safer than regular city streets.

It’s important to take precautions, but don’t let them scare you or your kids off their bikes.

Biking is a fun way to stay active.

Regular exercise will keep your kids healthy now and also set them up for good health habits that can last a lifetime.

Dr. Wallace: Last week, while on a date, I was involved in a minor automobile accident while driving my dad’s car. I was stopped at a red light when some guy smacked into the car.

The problem is that this guy didn’t have any insurance and didn’t have a job. When my dad had the damage estimated, it was $800, and his insurance covers everything but $200.

Now my dad is telling me I should pay the $200.

I don’t think I should have to because the accident wasn’t my fault and there was nothing I could have done to avoid it.

Who do you think should be responsible for the $200, my dad or me?

I could pay the money because I have $1,000 in a bank account that I saved up from summer jobs the last two years.
