The sound of rushing water, bikers and runners greeting each other, and the masses of geese honking at one another. Few people would think of these sounds when they reminisce of home, but one of my favorite destinations, the Fox River bike path in Geneva, brings up happy memories for me. After being away at college

for two years, it’s the little things that remind you of the place where you grew up.

Although I’m home for the summer, I currently go to Augustana in Rock Island and compete in both cross country and track and field. While I may compete for a new team, I always remember many of the days that I spent running on

the bike path for Geneva High School. During my high school career, I had laughs with fellow runners and tough days filled with hard workouts on this bike path.

I recently found myself wanting to go back – when I wasn’t breathing hard from exertion – to see the bike path from a “wow, this bike path is really

nice when I’m not gasping for air” kind of view. It’s truly wonderful to sit by and hear and feel how calm everything is. I hope as the summer progresses, I can take more of these kinds of moments to enjoy the beauty that Geneva has.

Fox Valley Wildlife Center helping fawn recover

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com ELBURN – In a dimly lit shed resting on a bed of hay, a ball of tan fur with scattered white speckles uncurls to reveal a fawn with his right hind leg wrapped from hoof to hip.

Fox Valley Wildlife Center volunteers and employees are trying to save a young deer’s life after he was hit by a car late last month.

On May 20, wildlife center employees received a call from a concerned local resident who saw the baby deer get hit by a car while he tried to follow his mother across the street, according to information provided by Fox Valley Wildlife Center.

The resident took the fawn to a veterinarian who wrapped the leg before the resident brought him to the wildlife center.

When staff removed the wrap, they realized the bone in the leg was partially exposed, so they took the fawn to a deer specialist. The veterinarian took X-rays and found a hairline fracture in the leg, said Robert Schuman, the animal care specialist at the center.

To help the deer recover, wildlife center staff needed to wrap the baby deer’s leg every day and give him medication. His condition has improved, Schuman said.

“He’s healed really well in the past couple of weeks,” he said.

This deer was a special case. Oftentimes when a fawn gets hit by a car, its legs are severely fractured and the fawn has to be put down, Schuman said.

Even though the fawn survived, it costs money to get him the care he needs.

The center has eight fawns in its care – the maximum amount allowed with

A fawn recently rescued and brought to the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn has undergone procedures to mend its leg after being struck by a car. Center employees hope the fawn will be fully recovered by September so they can release him back into the wild. the center’s license. Each deer costs about $180 to $200 a summer (about three months) for food and basic care alone. The injured fawn is getting extra painkillers, antibiotics and new leg wraps every day, which adds hundreds to the price, Schuman said.

The center runs entirely on donations, so it can be difficult to get the money it needs. Staff posted a link on the center’s website shortly after they rescued the fawn with the hope of finding people willing to donate to his care.

Center employees hope the fawn will be fully recov-

ered by September so they can release him and the other seven deer back into the wild.

By that time, the fawn will be much bigger; he’s growing quickly.

“He’s kind of a pain when I’m doing his leg wrap,” Schuman said. “They get to be very playful when they get this age.”

Schuman urges residents who find an animal in distress to call the center for help.

The Kane County Bar Foundation is accepting grant applications from nonprofit organizations seeking to meet

the unfilled legal needs of local citizens.

Last year, eight grants totaling $12,500 were awarded by the foundation to local organizations and agencies in their quest to assist members of the community with their legal issues. This is a competitive process. Only one application will be accepted per agency a funding year.

Applications are due no later than July 1, and they may be obtained on the Kane County Bar Association website, www.kanecountybar.org/ kcbf-grants, or by emailing Jan Wade, the foundation’s executive director, at director@ kanecountybar.org.

COVER STORY DEALING WITH MASSAGE PARLORS Due process new tool to regulate establishments in St. Charles

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com In response to three prostitution arrests at some of its massage establishments last year, St. Charles added those businesses to its existing regulation of alcohol and tobacco sellers.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he is now not only the liquor commissioner and the tobacco commissioner, but also the massage commissioner.

“We call it ATM – alcohol, tobacco and massage,” Rogina said.

The designation is how St. Charles is dealing with the issue, which came up last month in Geneva, where a massage parlor employee was charged with prostitution.

In St. Charles, if a massage business is accused of violating the terms of its business license – by an employee being charged with prostitution – the license holder would have a hearing before the St. Charles Massage Commission, similar to the process a liquor or tobacco license holder would face, Rogina said.

“This is a very clean, neat way of doing things ... by means of due process,” Rogi-

na said. “The good massage therapist will do a good job and provide competitiveness and choice in our community.”

The thought of facing a public hearing, fines and possible revocation of its business license would be an incentive for a massage business owner to be careful, he said.

As part of the restructuring, massage facilities outside of doctor’s offices, chiropractors or sports therapists must apply for a city license much the same as a liquor or tobacco seller, said Steve Huffman, the St. Charles deputy police chief of administration.

Rogina credited Huffman with doing “yeoman’s work” on restructuring massage regulations in the city.

“We used to license massage therapists individually, but around 2006, the state took over all licensing and

background checks of massage therapists,” Huffman said. “It was kind of a long journey to where we are at this point.”

In Elburn, a massage therapy business along Route 38 attracted the village’s attention in 2013 because of a zoning code issue. Elburn later dropped its complaint against the owner after it appeared the business also was being used as a tanning salon.

Elburn Building Commissioner Tom Brennan said the village has not taken any action against the business because it is in compliance with its zoning regulations.

Both St. Charles and Geneva police conduct compliance checks of its massage facilities, the same as they do for alcohol and tobacco sellers, officials said. Even with its first prostitution arrest last month in connection with a massage facility, Geneva is

not looking to add regulations like St. Charles did, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“I think it is a dangerous precedent to assume that all massage parlors will act as this particular massage parlor did,” Burns said. “We work closely with our police department to conduct these compliance checks. And these massage parlors are aware that we do compliance checks. It’s for their benefit, as well.”

Massage is a permitted use in the city’s B-2 business zoning districts, Burns said.

Aurora resident Lifa Jiang, 39, was charged May 27 at Foot and Body Massage, 629 W. State St., Geneva, with misdemeanor prostitution.

Jiang’s arrest was part of an undercover police operation after an anonymous tip, not through its regular compliance checks, Burns said.

Burns separated the two actions – undercover police work and regular compliance checks.

“If I’m a massage parlor, and I continue to pass compliance checks, I’m going to celebrate that fact that I am an above-board business, doing what’s right for the benefit of the community,” Burns said.

“If you fail, you deserve the punishment.”

Deferred prosecution is a program offered by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, in which charges against first-time misdemeanor offenders are deferred while they complete a program that includes accepting responsibility for their actions, according to its website, saopublic.co.kane.il.us.

The intent is to “hold offenders accountable” while giving them a second chance and it keeps their records clean of criminal convictions, according to the website.

According to court records, Chang-Li Wang, who was charged in April last year in St. Charles, is in a deferred prosecution program. She is on supervision until Sept. 4.

Hui Zhang, also charged in April last year in St. Charles, is seeking deferred prosecution, according to court records.

Sun Hee Gribat, charged in May 2014 in St. Charles, successfully completed the program, and charges were dismissed June 3, court records show.

Jiang is scheduled to appear in branch court Tuesday on the Geneva charges.

Hampshire man charged with public indecency in Batavia KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A Hampshire man was charged Thursday in connection with two incidents during which he exposed himself to a female, according to a Batavia Police Department news release.

Richard S. Moscato, 39, of the 700 block of Kathi Drive, Hampshire, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of public indecency, the release states.

The female saw the man expose himself, perform a sexual act and then drive off, according to the release.

The female gave a description of the man and his car to police. The second incident occurred at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of Winneba-

go Trail and Robin Drive in Batavia, the release states.

As in the first incident, a man with a gray four-door vehicle pulled up next to the woman. This time, the female heard the man ask for directions, according to the release.

As the female got closer to the man’s car, she noticed the man was not wearing pants and was performing a sexual act, the release states.

The man left in the vehicle, but the female was able to write down its license plate

number, according to the release.

Moscato was located in Aurora and then brought to Batavia police for questioning, the release states. After investigators spoke with Moscato, he was charged and released after posting bail, according to police.

A court date for the case was not immediately available Thursday evening. If convicted, the penalty for the charges is up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, according to the release.

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile in Cook County KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed Thursday mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile virus had been reported in Cook County.

According to a news release, the batches – found in Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park – were the first collected this year in northern Illinois. Last month, the department confirmed the report of a mosquito testing positive in St. Clair County.

“We have confirmed mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus from southern Illinois to northern Illinois,” IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah stated in the release.

“Although the county in which you live may not be reporting a West Nile virus positive result, you still need to take precautions, as we’re seeing positive results from across the state.”

In September 2014, a Geneva man was confirmed by the Kane County Health Department as testing positive for the virus. It was the only human case reported in the county in 2014, and there were no Kane County hu-

man cases reported in 2013.

In 2012, there were 13 human cases reported in the county.

According to the release, surveillance for the virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests on mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing sick horses and humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms.

People who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact the Kane County Health Department, at 630208-3801. The department will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing, the release stated.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird, the release stated.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms, the release stated.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Four lifeguards at Hall Quarry Beach swimming facility in Batavia, who helped an 8-year-old boy in distress on Wednesday, will be honored next week, at Tuesday’s Batavia Park District meeting.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Batavia Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St. On Wednesday afternoon, an 8-year-old child was observed to be in distress at the Hall Quarry Beach swimming facility at 400 S. Water St. Trained lifeguards responded immediately. They removed the child from the water and provided oxygen, and emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, according to Batavia Park District officials.

The boy was treated and taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. Because of privacy issues, park district officials are not able to release the name or condition of the child, Kari Felkamp, the district’s director of marketing and public relations, wrote Thursday in an email.

The park district will identify the lifeguards during Tuesday’s meeting, Felkamp said.

“The guards undergo rigorous water safety training four days a week, so they are well prepared for situations like this one,” Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela stated in a news release. “We are grateful there is a happy ending to this story!”

The lifeguards were present during the boy’s swimming test at about 2:30 p.m.

Bobby Gunter, who owns the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building, has applied for a downtown improvement grant to help with a project to demolish the building’s existing restrooms and replace them with three new restrooms that are in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act and all other building code requirements.

The current restrooms are antiquated and do not

comply with the ADA, Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston told aldermen. The project is estimated to cost $43,712, and staff is recommending the city give Gunter a $21,350 grant.

Several aldermen, however, voiced concerns about giving Gunter a grant before he has a tenant for the building.

“It doesn’t make good sense to spend money on a project like this without a tenant,” 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Both 6th Ward Alderman Nick Cerone and 4th

Ward Alderman Susan Stark shared similar concerns.

“I am not in the position to support this as is,” Stark said. “It seems too speculative.”

Cerone said he would be against “just a sale for a real estate venture.”

Aiston had told aldermen awarding the grant would further create an incentive for Gunter to either sell the property or pursue tenants.

He said grant payment disbursements could be made contingent upon sale of the property or tenant occupancy.

Staff will discuss with Gunter the concerns that were raised.

Bill designed to reduce ticket scams headed to governor’s desk On the Web

“This bill fills a gap,” Kifowit said during a news conference Thursday at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora.

“Government is ever evolving, along with the Internet.”

Kifowit was the lead sponsor of House Bill 3103, which offers consumers new protections by requiring companies that resell tickets to state they are not the event venue box office or its licensed ticket agent, and that lost or stolen tickets may be reissued only by the broker or reseller.

We want to make our patrons as happy as we can.”

Kifowit said she hopes the bill will reduce the number of people being victimized by online scams.

“We wanted to have a good bill that everyone can follow,” she said.

“It is always uplifting to see what our children grow up and go on to do, especially when they come from a place where community is so ingrained in them,” he said in a news release.

BATAVIA – University of Chicago student Lily Wangler recently brought a lot of smiles to students at an elementary school on Chicago’s south side.

The 19-year-old is the daughter of Tom Wangler Jr., president of Confident Aire in Batavia. She is part of the university’s Neighborhood Schools Program and is a teaching assistant at Beulah Shoesmith Elementary School, a job she said she loves. She grades papers and teaches literacy skills.

“The kids are always excited to see me,” she said.

“It’s awesome. It’s just really

rewarding for me to see other people learn.”

After learning the elementary school did not have a library, she organized a book drive with the help of the University of Chicago and her dad, as well as Julie Brooks, a volunteer with the Friends of the Batavia Public Library group. One of the drop-off locations for the book drive was at Confident Aire.

“I knew that in Batavia, there were a lot of generous people, a lot of people who could get excited about something like this,” Lily Wangler said.

The drive collected 1,100 books, which exceeded Wangler’s goal. She said “near

To the Editor: I would like to thank Dave Stevens of Stevens Automotive Repair in Geneva and his employees for donating their time May 30 to teach a free workshop on basic car maintenance.

My teenage son learned a lot; I learned more than I thought I would.

Although there was much I had learned from my parents and siblings, there also was a lot I never had learned (or forgotten) and much that had changed in the intervening decades.

Also, it was a lot of fun – Dave is not only knowledgeable and clearly enjoys his work, but was a good teacher. Kudos to someone who believes in giving back to the community!

According to a study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, more than 60 percent of Americans refer to the “use by” or “sell by” date when deciding when to discard a carton of milk.

What’s needed is some sort of consistent standard of labeling across the 50 states. It’s not as outlandish as it seems – the so-called “Schumer box,” which standardizes the display (and even type size) of rates and penalties in credit-card offers, has worked well.

One idea is to codify labeling practices nationally and to replace “use by” or “sell by” dates on fresh products with “freshest before.” To ensure that consumers understand this is not an expiration date, retailers could post signs in their fresh-food sections. It also would help if the placement of labels were standardized, so consumers didn’t have

to hunt around on the package to find them. Consumers also should know many foods past their freshness dates can safely be frozen.

The wastage problem hasn’t been totally ignored in Washington. To help educate consumers on waste, the Environmental Protection Agency launched the Food Recovery Challenge program, and the USDA created a smartphone app called FoodKeeper. There is even a bill in Congress that would establish a national standard for dating food.

But with Congress prone to inertia and the industry hesitant to make major changes, the bill hasn’t gained much traction. That’s too bad. A more coherent and consistent labeling system makes sense for all Americans – including members of Congress. After all, elected officials have to eat, too.

On the surface, the podium calls at O’Brien Stadium represent times of decompression, in which athletes seemingly sense seasons or careers coming to an end. Ege’s mind kept churning, which adds up

Spencer, who isn’t shy about discussing the depth of his own intellectual track pursuits, introduced Ege to the idea of “metacognition days,” in which he thinks, on the fly, about something different in between clearing each hurdle.

Are his shoulders facing toward the finish line as he accelerates into the stretch run?

“Once you get really into it, it’s a lot about speed,” Ege said, “but at the basic level, it’s all about timing and getting over the hurdle right.”

Ege was unbeaten in both

hurdles races as a senior after performing the same feat in the 300s in 2014. His winning state effort then? 37.34 seconds.

Ege shaved slightly more from last season’s 110 time of 14.49, when he finished third.

As a sophomore in 2013, Ege took fourth at state in the 300s at 39.22. He battled a balky quad then, but the elation of medaling in spite of it invigorated him anew.

Spencer remembers watching a hobbled Ege from afar at the Kane County meet that spring. Spencer then was in his third and final season as St. Charles North boys head coach; he left for Central to be closer to his daughter, Elizabeth, a BC track athlete and recent graduate.

Two years and five individual hurdle state medals later, even the humble Ege would be hard-pressed to disagree.

In his final state meet, he defeated Cahokia senior Korrion Session by 29-hundredths of a second in the 110s

and Freeport freshman Deion McShane by 33-hundredths of a second in the 300s.

McShane also pushed Ege at sectionals, which Central won as a team before tying for the runner-up spot behind Cahokia at state.

“I just kind of think that I’m not going to let anyone beat me,” Ege said. “I’m hoping for someone to push me, and that’s definitely what happened at state. It pushes me to go faster.”

Ege soon will size up collegiate hurdles, which rise 42 inches above the ground,

six inches higher than the 300s and three inches higher than the 110s.

Schmidt and Spencer have no doubt Ege will do the requisite preparation and math, then relish talking about it.

It’s part of his fabric.

“This kid, I just have all the confidence in the world that he’s going to excel athletically and academically,” Spencer said. “He’s one of the kids you bank on. He’ s a fantastic kid, and I think anyone who’s met him will say the same thing.”

Probable starters Angie Morrow of Kaneland (17-2, 1.20 ERA, 161 strikeouts in 122 innings) and Mariah Dionne of Marengo (25-3, 1.92 ERA, 259 strikeouts in 178 innings) are stingy to say the least.

The Knights (24-8) hope to maintain an aggressive attack

against the Indians (34-6), following a season-long script.

Besides, the program’s first state tournament trip since 2000 beats the alternative.

“None of us wanted to go back to travel (ball) yet,” Kaneland senior second baseman Morgan Sikon said. “We wanted to finish out strong. All of us seniors wanted to win it all.”

A practice Thursday afternoon for the St. Francis baseball team consisted of a light workout, ending with a batting practice to make sure the seniors ended their time on the field in a strong way.

Senior Nick Dama’s home run got robbed Jason Sullivan on one of his final swings, eliciting one of the many laughs and enjoyable moments the Spartans took away from their last practice together before heading to Joliet for today’s Class 3A state semifinal against Nazareth Academy.

“We know all of our play calls, our coverages and what we need to get done this weekend,” St. Francis coach Nick Hall said. “We felt it was good

to give them a small reward with a light practice to stay loose. They deserve it, being one of the last four teams in the state, but also know that our work isn’t done.”

The Spartans (26-9) face the Roadrunners (31-8) at 10 a.m. in one semifinal before Morgan Park and Highland follow at Silver Cross Field.

“I think a big key has been picking each other up all season,” Whelton said. “If someone strikes out or makes an error, they know that the other eight guys on the field are going to make a play to have their back. It gives you confidence knowing that making a mistake isn’t the end of the world. But, we’re all real excited to get out there and bring home a state title.”

Whenever Hall decides it is best to pitch Sullivan or whatever team they play Saturday, for whatever occasion, Hall said if the Spartans play St. Francis baseball this weekend, everything will take care of itself.

Along with doing all of the little things, there’s no doubt the Spartans have advanced to this level behind senior Jason Sullivan. The pitcher/shortstop and Central Michigan commit was named Suburban Christian Conference Player of the Year, with an 11-1 record and 0.79 ERA, as well as hitting .432 with four home runs and 32 RBIs. Hall has not decided whether Sullivan will pitch today against Nazareth or Saturday in what could be the state championship game.

But aside from this weekend, Sullivan said even though Thursday was a more outright expression of the Spartans having fun, it’s something they really have been doing all season.

“If you can’t have fun playing this game, then what’s the point of playing?” Sullivan said. “When we have fun, we’re much more loose and it seems like we play better. Stewart said. “Any time you get the chance to represent the United States in any sort of competition is truly an honor. To have Arnold Palmer be involved with it and partly represent my school and Vanderbilt in this event as well is a great honor and something I don’t take lightly.�

Like it’s 1999: Team Europe coach Jean Van de Velde infamously tread barefoot into Carnoustie’s Barry Burn to size up a potential shot during the final regulation hole of the 1999 British Open.

Sixteen years later, the Frenchman doesn’t sidestep the events that put him in the middle of one of golf’s more memorable recent collapses.

Needing only a double bogey 6 on No. 18 to secure the claret jug, Van de Velde finished with an unnerving 7, finding the bleachers, water and a bunker with three of his shots. His finish made many in attendance or watching on TV squirm, but brought hope to Justin Leonard and Paul Lawrie, who suddenly found themselves in a four-hole playoff.

Lawrie won by three shots. “You know what, I’ve been healed a long time, just put it this way. But yes, a lot of people talk to me about it,â€? Van de Velde said. “Let’s put it this way, there was, what, 250 million people watching it on TV, so up until I’ve met all those people, I think that every time I’m going to meet a new one ‌ he’s going to talk about it,

that’s a fact. So it’s going to probably take me a few lives to go through all those people. “But, you know, it’s part of my life, and it’s part of what comes with what is thrown at you sometimes. And I’m very happy, and I have no problem talking about it.�

Van de Velde, now a European golf ambassador who’s active in organizing the French Open and the country’s Ryder Cup hosting turn in 2018, has kept spirits lighthearted with his team. “I’ve got to know him a bit more this week, and he’s a really nice guy,� Irishman Gary Hurley said. “Real friendly guy. He’s pretty funny, too, which kind of lightens the mood. He’s really understanding, as well. I really like him.�

Drink it up: Palmer arrived at Rich Harvest Farms late Thursday afternoon, in time to speak at the opening ceremony. He’s set to hit a ceremonial tee shot at 7:15 a.m. today, following protocol from The Masters. “It’s one thing to have his name on the event. It’s a different thing to have his presence, and, hopefully, everybody will feel that while he’s here,� said Team USA coach Bruce Heppler, who guides Georgia Tech during the NCAA season.

Palmer, who was not made available to the media, won’t be on hand for the entire Cup. Rest assured, though, his name will be on golfers’ and patrons’ lips throughout the weekend. Even members

SUGAR GROVE – Spaniard Jon Rahm touts the title of No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and last month earned the Ben Hogan Award, given to the top athlete in NCAA men’s golf.

He has heard feedback about Rich Harvest Farms, host of this weekend’s Palmer Cup, but with respect to the challenging, immaculate surroundings awaiting him in the international match-play event, Rahm isn’t leery. “This course is the kind of course that just being on the fairway might not be enough.

You can be on the fairway and be blocked out by a tree,�

Rahm said. “There’s a couple courses actually like that in Spain. My course in Spain has three trees that are right in the middle of the fairway, so I’m kind of used to that. ... You just need to give it a little bit more of a thought off the tee.�

An Arizona State junior, Rahm represents a quick study. Whether part of Team USA or Team Europe, his collegiate colleagues who have experienced the layout before offer similar scouting reports. “Keeping the hole in front of you, leaving yourself uphill putts and hitting fairways will be very important,� said Belgian Thomas Detry, who previously competed at RHF for Illinois when Northern Illinois hosted an NCAA Regional.

Vanderbilt senior Hunter Stewart is one of the few Team USA members who hasn’t played the course.

The event, launched by the legendary Arnold Palmer in 1997, begins with foursome and four-ball matches at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively, today. Singles matches begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Embrace a Family celebrates 10 years of community service Scenario: Imagine that you are a single mom, doing your best, but frustrated about finances, doing things for your kids and finding your place in the world. The year is 2005. Does anybody care?

Fast forward, it hardly seems like 10 years ago, yet – back then – there were people listening with understanding ears and clearing room in their hearts for a special set of women.

As in most projects, there was a requirement for the kind of leader who thinks beyond the envelope, has a willingness to work hard and take risks, sees the best in people and has the necessary skills. Enter Tory Haines and all the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.

Here’s a salute to Embrace a Family as it celebrates its 10th anniversary

Variety of exercises helps prevent bone fractures

Dear Doctor K: Last year I broke my ankle while jogging. It turns out I was vulnerable to breaking a bone because I have osteoporosis.

Should I stop exercising to avoid another break? If I should exercise, are there particular types of exercise I should do?

Dear Reader: Once you’ve broken a bone, it’s natural to be cautious about exercise for fear of another injury. It’s true that osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease, increases your risk of bone fracture. But staying active is exactly what you should be doing right now. Why? Because the right exercises, done properly, will build up your bone strength and reduce the likelihood of another fracture.

Besides increasing your bone density, exercise also builds muscle. That, in turn, reduces your risk not only of falling, but also of breaking a bone if you do fall. One large analysis found that exercise programs that included balance, strength and resistance training reduced the odds of falls resulting in fractures by more than 60 percent.

An exercise program for osteoporosis should include four components: • Weight-bearing exercises force your body to work against

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff gravity, which helps to strengthen bones. Examples include walking, climbing stairs, playing tennis and dancing. Do these types of exercises at least three times a week.

• Muscle-strengthening exercises use weights or your body’s own resistance to work against gravity.

Examples include lifting free weights, using a weight machine, working with resistance bands and lifting your own body weight.

Do these types of exercises at least twice a week.

• Balance exercises improve your ability to hold yourself upright and help prevent falls. Examples include tai chi and yoga.

Perform balance exercises at least twice a week.

• Flexibility exercises keep your muscles limber and joints mobile. They include yoga and stretching. Try to stretch for at least five to 10 minutes after every workout. Hold each stretch for 10 to 30 seconds.

Before you start exercising again, ask your doctor if you need to be aware of any physical

limitations based on your bone strength and general health.

When you’re ready to start, consider working with a physical therapist. A therapist can design a program to meet your needs and goals; he or she can also teach you the proper form and technique to further reduce your risk of injury.

Always start slowly and build up from there.

There’s a simple reason: No medicine ever invented has health benefits as powerful as regular exercise. Plus, it makes you feel good – and it can be free. It’s hard to overemphasize exercise.

I suggest you seek legal counsel. After that, contact the nearest church that has a family counseling service and enroll immediately. You need professional counseling and lots of it!

Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 and my ears are pierced, but I’m not allowed to wear earrings. I was adopted 10 years ago after my mother died.

She had my ears pierced as a baby.

My new mother says, “God gave you beautiful ear lobes, and if He had wanted holes in your ears, you would have been born with them” I disagree. I say, “God

Your mom has her reason for not wanting you to wear earrings. You should express your point of view, but when the debate ends, it ends, and you should honor your mom’s wishes.

Don’t make such a big issue out of this.

After all, when you come of age you can wear earrings as often as you wish.

Dr. Wallace: What do you do with a boyfriend who drinks too much, watches television too much, is rude much too often, borrows money from me much too often and threatens to “punch my lights out” much too often, even though he has never hit me? He is very handsome and I know a lot of girls who would love to have him.
