Black bear spotted around Genoa

A black bear, seen

by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Duehning while on patrol, was seen Wednesday near Derby Line Road south of Genoa.

lsynett@shawmedia.com GENOA – Something unexpected crossed the road in front of Genoa resident Steve Kleba near the intersection of routes 72 and 23 on Wednesday morning.

He pulled over and took photographs of an American black bear, which state officials and law enforcement believe is the same animal recently spotted in Rockford, in Freeport and across northern Illinois.

“It’s a black bear in DeKalb County, how surprised would you be?” Kleba said. “When it crossed the road, I knew right away it wasn’t a deer or a coyote. I turned around, and sure enough, it was a bear.”

A deputy from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was later called to the area and saw the bear multiple times. It likely weighs between 250 and 300 pounds and would stand 6 feet tall if it were on its hind legs.

“This bear seems nonaggressive and hasn’t been aggressive with people or property,” Sheriff Roger Scott said.

“He is moving around and we are monitoring his movements, but as long as he is nonaggressive, we are going to let him be a bear.”

The bear was later found near Derby Line Road in a heavily wooded area close to the Ellwood Greens housing development. At 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, a caller reported seeing the bear near Lukens and Plank roads in Sycamore.

es also were called to assist in monitoring the bear, which they believe has traveled pretty extensively in the past week.

A person near Rockford spotted a bear eating berries outside Saturday. Early Sunday morning, Roscoe police spotted a bear, too. On Monday, Ogle County Sheriff’s personnel unsuccessfully searched for a black bear that a resident reported seeing roaming in the western part of the county.

“We are assuming it’s the same bear,” said Hank Frazier, Region 1 commander for the IDNR. “It was at a bird feeder on Memorial Day weekend. That seems to be its M.O., it goes to bird feeders, cleans them out and then takes off.

It hasn’t been aggressive or caused any problems.”

The increase in bear sightings is not unexpected in the greater Chicago area, said

Seth Magle, director of the Urban Wildlife Institute at Lincoln Park Zoo. “This is something that is not going to be a flash in the pan, but rather increase as we continue to green our urban spaces,” he said. “[Green spaces] are a good thing, but attract wildlife. We need to start investigating management strategies, and what to do when this happens.”

Frazier believes the bear may have come from Wisconsin.

“We caution everyone not to approach it, leave it alone and, hopefully, it will eventually move its way north,” he said. “If it becomes aggressive or hostile, we would have to take action, but right now, we hope it continues to stick to itself. My biggest concern is that it heads east and ends up in the more metropolitan areas.”

As bears go, the black bear is pretty timid, Magle said,

adding that most bears found in the area come from the north.

“They avoid people the vast majority of the time and are scavengers that don’t move huge distances,” he said.

“This bear seems to be getting around quite a bit, but they are among the most timid and shy of the bears. That doesn’t mean approach it, but it is looking to avoid people.”

The black bear is the smallest of the three bears species found in North America, and can live into the teens. They are omnivorous, eating plants, fruits, nuts, insects, honey, salmon, small mammals and carrion. In northern regions, they eat spawning salmon.

Residents in the area are advised to take precautions, such as closely supervising pets and small animals when they’re outside, taking down bird feeders, and not leaving any kind of food outside.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A 22-yearold Geneva woman and a 17-year-old St. Charles boy have been charged in connection with an armed robbery early Wednesday morning at the Walmart store at 801 N. Randall Road, in Batavia.

Kayla N. Magnuson, 22, of the 300 block of Brittany Court, Geneva, and the teen both have been charged with felony counts of robbery and armed robbery along with retail theft, a misdemeanor.

Magnuson was taken to the Kane County Jail, and the teen was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Center.

Batavia police at 5:58 a.m. were dispatched to the Batavia store for a theft in progress.

While en route to the store, police learned the suspects were attempting to leave the store without paying for electronic items, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

Several Walmart em-

ployees told police the teen brandished a large knife and threatened several store employees, according to the release.

Magnuson and the teen then walked to a parked car, and the teen placed the electronics in the car, and then drove away, according to the release.

A few hours later, a Geneva patrol officer noticed the vehicle parked in the 300 block of Brittany Court.

Police from Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles were able to determine the location of Magnuson and the teen and arrested them.

Police doing a search of vehicle found the items taken earlier from the Walmart store.

The two also are connected with robberies at the Meijer and Walmart stores in St. Charles on Wednesday morning, according to St. Charles Police Cmdr. Jerry Gatlin said.

The suspects were involved in an unrelated theft in Sugar Grove on Tuesday, he said.

Batavia woman’s DUIs net 3 years in prison

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – A Batavia woman who previously committed at least three prior DUI violations, was sentenced to three years in prison.

Michelle N. Delgado, 35, immediately was remanded to custody after pleading guilty to aggravated driving under the influence. Prosecutors

agreed to reduce her initial charge to a Class 2 felony.

She has at least three other DUI convictions, but this is her first sentence to the Department of Corrections, prosecutors said.

Delgado was arrested Sept.

26, 2013, by Crystal Lake police.

Her guilty plea was accepted Wednesday by McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather.

LOCAL BRIEFS HorsePower seeking volunteers for program MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding is seeking volunteers ages 14 and older for its growing program, which teaches horseback riding lessons to children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities. Approximately one-third of the riders receive scholarship support, so volunteers are needed to keep costs down.

Assignments include grooming, tacking, training, leading and side-walking. Applicants must have at least two years of experience with horses and must pass a horse-handling skills assessment. Shifts are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Daytime hours are especially needed. Support volunteers also are needed for marketing, cleaning, fundraising, childcare and office tasks; no horse experience is necessary.

All volunteers must have their own health insurance and consent to a background check. A mandatory orientation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

If you’re a middle-aged individual, you should know that “age-related macular degeneration” (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss among those in your age group. While the disease does not cause complete blindness, it does cause a gradual loss of central vision, which is needed to read print, drive, identify faces, and perform other important tasks. This happens as a result of the central portion of the retina (macula) becoming thin and degenerating over time, which is the case with the most common type of AMD, “dry” AMD. MAPPING OUT SOLUTIONS TriCity Family Services program promotes learning through outdoor adventure

ENEVA – For nearly half a century – 47 years – TriCity Family Services has been providing counseling services for thousands of individuals and hundreds of families and couples in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

The nonprofit organization’s counselors, which now number 38 in full- and parttime roles, have guided troubled marriages and troubled teens and helped guide families through crises. Its website lists various services, from anger management to workshops for children whose parents are getting divorced.

Batavia resident Jim Otepka has been at the helm for 25 years. As the agency’s third director, Otepka spoke about the impact the agency has had on local families.

Starting in 1967 as the TriCity Family Project, it truly was a cutting-edge model of how to deliver affordable quality family therapy to the local community, he said.

“It’s a great privilege to be part of this agency because it belongs to the community,” Otekpa said. “We were founded at a very grassroots level by wonderful community volunteers, and we have been supported incredibly by the community through the years.”

One of the agency’s roles is to create community, particularly for families who might feel disconnected, he said.

“We hope we are a link or a way of connecting them to this community,” Otepka said.

One measure of the success in its work is in updates from past clients, he said.

“I often hear of their children, and sometimes even their grandchildren,” Otepka said.

The program takes a group of 30 teens – originally those at risk of a difficult transition from middle school to high school – who take a six-day, five-night canoeing and camping trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, 1.4 million acres of forests interconnected lakes and waterways.

The trip was expanded to include students making the transition from ninth grade to 10th grade. Participants leave today. With bus travel, the trip is a total of eight days.

The Wilderness Challenge is modeled after the Outward

Bound program, founded in 1962 based on the principles of hands-on learning through outdoor adventure, Otepka said.

“We are way from all the amenities of life,” Otepka said.

“No cellphones, no electronic devices. ... Everything we need to live on, we carry with us in our canoes, across ancient portage trails that were probably first used by Native Americans and French fur traders.

It’s primitive, and these areas have been preserved as wilderness areas, undeveloped.”

The trip is free to all teens – from food to equipment and clothing, if necessary – because of the community’s gen-

erosity in supporting the program, Otepka said.

The challenges are provided by the primitive nature of the route, he said.

“The founder of Outward Bound used to refer to this as ‘forced interdependence,’ ” Otepka said. “They get a list to bring and orientation to show them how to paddle.”

Watson said. “It’s where we find peace. We wanted to bring it to the lives of the kids in the community, too.”

Watson and Otepka said they have heard from teens who went on the trip and, as adults, acknowledge how they were changed by it.

“One had been to a college interview for a graduate program she was applying for,” Watson said. “She said they asked her a whole bunch of questions, and they got to this one and they said, ‘Tell us about pivotal experiences in your life,’ and she said ‘I found myself talking for 20 minutes straight about the Wilderness Challenge program.’

“There was so much that happened as a result of coming on an experience like that, in terms of how she got to know herself, personally in a way she couldn’t have known otherwise. We tell kids all the time, that this is a new way to know yourself.”

The wilderness experience is separate from what he calls “screen world.”

“There is a screen in front of them all the time,” Watson said. “When your mind is constantly in front of screens and activity at the incredible rate that culture puts in front of us with technology, you get in sort of a mindless way of living. ... This quiets everything down, including the interior of your mind.”

••• Otepka grew up in Lombard and moved to Batavia in 1972, when he got married. He has four adult children, three grandsons and a fourth grandson on the way.

At 65, Otepka said he is not ready to retire – not yet anyway.

“There will be a point down the road where I’ll be handing the reins over to someone else,” Otepka said, “but hoping to continue in another fashion my life’s work, serving families in the community.”

Village administrator Jennifer Johnsen said the fair will also provide three “Outreach Volunteer” training sessions, at 2:15, 3:15 and 4:15 p.m., in hopes of training 200 residents in spreading emergency preparedness awareness.

“[Outreach Volunteers] will be trained on what they can do as far as their family or what the village will need,” Johnsen said. “[Terror-type] situations are included in a part of the training, but flooding, tornadoes and earthquakes are a bigger threat.”

Paul Bumba, emergency preparedness coordinator for St. Charles, and Phil Laier, emergency medical services system coordinator for Presence St. Joseph Hospital, will conduct the training sessions. A 45-minute class will be followed by 45 minutes of interactive training, where participants will discuss organization-specific emergency preparedness with the representatives present at the fair. Child care will be provided for the trainees.

Although natural disasters can strike without warning, there still are many ways to be prepared, according to village president Patsy Smith.

“Residents can keep a

well-stocked emergency kit at home ... or buy a weather radio and learn how to interpret local weather alerts and warnings,” Smith wrote in an email. “Free ‘apps’ available to download from community. fema.gov provide preparedness planners, first aid information, weather, radio and even a flashlight.”

If the fair fails to train 200 outreach volunteers, Johnsen said additional training sessions will be incorporated into the National Night Out safety event Aug. 5.

“One of the reasons we got the grant is because we’re a relatively large community with very little staff,” Johnsen said. “It gives us an opportunity to build relationships with other organizations that already provide [safety] services, like the fire district.”

This is Campton Hills’ first safety fair, after receiving the $25,000 grant in January.

There are no plans to make the fair a yearly event.

ST. CHARLES – Cave biologist Steve Taylor from the Illinois Natural History Survey will give a presentation on cave biology and ecosystems from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

The presentation is part of the “Learn from the Experts” series of adult ecology programs, co-sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the St. Charles Park District and the Geneva Park District.

CAMPTON HILLS – A free safety fair is coming to Bell Graham Elementary School, 4N505 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills, on June 21 thanks to a grant from the Cities of Service group for volunteer service.

The fair will emphasize emergency preparedness, especially in the case of natural disasters. A CPR demonstration and tours of a squad car, fire truck and ambulance will be offered to attendees. Open from 2 to 5 p.m., the fair is for all ages and does not require preregistration.

“We are in an area that doesn’t have a whole lot of resources, but we do enjoy being part of several fire districts and we have our own police department,” said Laura Andersen, village trustee.

Kane County to repair winter road damage

The Kane County Transportation Committee on Wednesday recommended approval of spending nearly $93,000 on resurfacing and patching work.

“We weren’t hit as hard as some of the other systems in the county,” said Tom Rickert, deputy director of transportation.

The project will involve resurfacing and patching Fabyan Parkway between Western Avenue and Route 31 and resurfacing portions of Harter, Dauberman and Perry roads.

Geneva Construction Co. of Aurora was the low bidder with a proposed contract amount of $92,691.77 – about 1.24 percent below the engi-

neer’s estimate of $93,853.50, Assistant Director of Transportation Steve Coffinbargar said.

Other improvements are set for Dean Street, Prairie Street and Harter Road.

County staff coordinated with the highway commissioners for St. Charles Township and Sugar Grove Township to include improvements on their routes – Dean and Prairie streets, respectively – in the county’s contract for the cold-in-place recycling, Coffinbargar said.

He said cold-in-place recycling involves grinding about 1.5 inches of surface asphalt, as well as the binder asphalt, which is mixed with liquid asphalt to be used to pave the road. New surface asphalt will be laid, he said.

The county must adopt an aggregation plan of operation and governance before implementing the program, and it’s that document that will be the subject of two public hearings this month.

The first hearing is set for 5:15 p.m. June 24 in the County Board Room in Building A of the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. Another is set for 7 p.m. June 25 at Fisherman’s Inn, 43W901 Main Street Road, Elburn.

Approved by voters in March, electric aggregation gives the county the power to negotiate electric rates for unincorporated residents.

Residents can opt out of the program and continue to get their electricity supplied

by ComEd, but the county expects that those in the program should experience some savings.

According to the county, the plan of operation and governance describes

the policies and procedures by which the county will carry out its electric aggregation program, including policies and procedures relating to rates and customer service.

It also includes information on opt-out procedures, billing and the selection of an electric supplier, according to the county.

A copy of the proposed plan is available for inspection during normal business hours at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, which is in Building B on the government center campus.

Two camps will be offered, one from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday through June 20; and another from 1:30 to 4 p.m. July 16 through July 18. The Summer Lego Programs are for fourththrough eighth-graders, who will program competition-worthy robots for a series of missions.

Three programs will be offered, one from 12:30 to 6 p.m. June 21 through June 22; another from July 12 through July 13; and another from July 19 through July 20.

Registration is required.

Locations are to be determined.

“Cancer doesn’t sleep, so we don’t sleep,” Gilligan said.

“But you don’t have to spend the whole night. It really is a community event.”

Radio personality Lisa Dent of WUSN-FM, known as US 99.5, will kick off the ceremonies at 6 p.m., followed by a cancer survivor victory lap.

Dent is a cancer survivor.

“We’re anticipating between 160 to 200 survivors to come out to the event,” Gilligan said.

The event also will feature children’s activities from 5 to 7:30 p.m., a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

The school board Monday also approved an amendment to the Intra-District transfer policy for Davis Richmond School, board member Corinne Pierog said.

The amendment removes a restriction requiring a health care provider’s note and allows class size to be the factor for consideration of approval.

Similar to the districtwide policy, transfer requests are due by July 31, transportation is not provided, and siblings are not guaranteed placement.

Pierog said several families are interested in transferring to Richmond for its core curriculum focus on STEM education and foreign language.

A school choice option for students in the Davis Richmond attendance area was part of an updated Corrective Action Plan for the school.

Development of the plan is in response to an October 2013 court order by Judge David Akemann on a lawsuit against the district for restructuring Davis and Richmond schools.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 school board this week approved a districtwide transfer policy for elementary school students and an amendment to its transfer policy for Davis Richmond School.

The policy permits families of elementary school students to request a transfer to attend a District 303 elementary school outside of their designated attendance areas. This policy has no impact on the District 303 budget – transfers will be considered only where space is available, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

Requests for a transfer must be made between May 15 and July 31 before each school year.

The district will not provide transportation for students granted a transfer to a school outside their attendance area, according to the release.

Siblings are not guaranteed placement with any transfer request, therefore individual requests must be submitted for each student, according

Q-tips – an analysis of human nature The Q-tip. The personal eardrum submarine capable of aural cleanliness and an assortment of other sordid duties. This fluffy guardian of personal hygienic care has traversed more places than Marco Polo and seen more things than the Hubble Telescope. So, I must ask – why do humans continue to squander these cotton voyagers on self-indulgent ear pleasure and face the slight possibility of over-extension?

Now, I do not posses a doctorate in behavioral sciences from any prestigious university, but I do posses a rather large vocabulary and an affinity for tweed.

The all too familiar and glorious feeling of a Q-tip rapping on my eardrum’s door will remain in my memory banks as one of my better life expeditions; I imagine this feeling ranks among the same experiences of a dog getting its belly scratched or a buck first discovering that his antlers doubled as majestic headgear and posterior massagers.

Still, plunging into the decadence-filled depths of the grimy ear kingdom can end in a royal pain in the noggin.

Oh, what sayeth thou, ear? Thou shall explodeith with agony and sendith odd throbbing pulses throughout my head case for the whole day if I invoke thy wrath with a Q-tip? Marvelous.

As a human with a wee more than 18 years of living expertise, I can see that our race tends to push limits; given a restriction, one can count on humanity to outdo it. From ingestion to exercise, we overeat, overextend and overdo just about every performable deed in the creature repertoire.

In a time when surplus has become the standard measure of success, a break from the usual tumultuous rush toward excess might prove rather relaxing and revealing; finding happiness with one’s current status may turn out much easier than striving for more and only finding pain as a result.

I do hope that people don’t make a habit out of speed-using Q-tips, but sometimes a person’s habit, like my ability for extrapolation, knows no bounds.

Now, I am no Q-tip addict or abuser; however, I would resemble the world’s largest Q-tip-ocrite if I said that I didn’t take a few indulgent plunges every now and then.

I have a lot to work on in the way of moderation, but one can rest assured that I’ll give those intrepid defenders of ear sanitation a break.

Sprint’s takeover of T-Mobile BLOOMBERG NEWS In the latest merger-inthe-making, Sprint Corp. has proposed acquiring scrappy underdog carrier T-Mobile US Inc. in a deal valued at about $31 billion. That would leave just three major players in the U.S. mobile-phone market – an understandable concern for regulators, who seem likely to block the merger in the name of encouraging low prices and preserving competition.

They shouldn’t. Their motivations are admirable, but their conclusions, in this case, are mistaken.

It’s counterintuitive, but consolidation among mobile-phone carriers can actually lead to lower prices. That’s partly because, according to a recent study of mobile markets in developed economies

by New Street Research, the number of competitors is less important than their ability to

compete.

And that’s the crucial distinction here: As competitors, Sprint and T-Mobile are fairly dismal. Both companies significantly trail their bigger rivals – AT&T and Verizon Communications – in performance, subscribers and profits. The odds of both surviving for long, in other words, aren’t good.

Even so, the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission, which will have to approve the deal, have repeatedly expressed skepticism about reducing the number of nationwide carriers. And they’ve pointed to T-Mobile’s recent successes – after a proposed merger with AT&T was rightly shot down in 2011 – as evidence. It’s true that T-Mobile has been shaking up the moribund mobile market by doing away with its more annoying conventions, such as long-term service

contracts and international data charges, and by paying customers’ early-termination fees when they defect from its rivals. That has gotten T-Mobile a lot of new subscribers.

But this strategy is unsustainable: The company lost $150 million last quarter, the fourth straight quarter of net losses. And for all its progress, T-Mobile still has only 49 million retail subscribers versus Verizon’s 103.3 million and AT&T’s 85.1 million. Worse, in terms of competition, is that much of T-Mobile’s success has come at Sprint’s expense.

Now consider if T-Mobile combined with Sprint. The resulting company would have 95.4 million retail subscribers.

It would be better positioned to compete for spectrum and invest in technology. Allowing them to merge now, before one or both falters, would be more likely to preserve serious competition against the two industry giants.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club has awarded a vocational scholarship for $1,000 to a recent St. Charles North graduate, and it also recently recognized four students who attended a leadership conference.

Cynthia Padilla, a recent St. Charles North graduate, was the recipient of the $1,000 scholarship. According to a news release issued by the club, the scholarship is intended for a student preparing for a career that requires less than a four-

year degree “to enter the world of work and become successful and productive.” The release stated that Padilla is enrolled in the automotive program at Elgin Community College, where she is to begin in the fall.

Under new owners, restaurant boasts new name, menu

Open Range American Grill, located at 35 N. Water St. in downtown Batavia, in May changed its name to The Range Grill & Tap to reflect a change in ownership.

The restaurant had previously been connected to Open Range Southwest Grill, which still operates a restaurant in Sugar Grove.

“I wanted it to be mine,” said Jeremy Bertrand of North Aurora, the restaurant’s new co-owner and manager. The restaurant’s co-owner is Rob Piton, who was involved in the restaurant when it was known as Open Range and prior to that, Lodge on the Fox. This is Bertrand’s first venture into the restaurant business.

“It’s a great opportunity to use what I know,” he said.

Bertrand already has expanded the restaurant’s menu, adding items such as a New York strip filet mignon.

“I wanted to give people more options,” he said.

Bertrand also has added live entertainment at the restaurant.

“I want to have live entertainment every once in a while to spice things up,” he said.

The Range also has undergone some physical changes, including the installation of garage doors that separate the restaurant’s screened porch from its main dining room, which will help the restaurant better accommodate private parties, Bertrand said.

Those customers who dined at the restaurant when it was known as Open Range American Grill might be familiar with the restaurant’s chef, who now works

“I got lucky and inherited him,” Bertrand said.

The restaurant’s popular fresh prime burgers served with a variety of toppings are a carry over from the previous menu.

“The chef does a phenomenal job with the burgers,” Bertrand said. Bertrand’s favorite burger is The Honky Tonk, which is a fresh prime Angus beef patty topped

with a fried egg, cheese sauce, onion strings, and Applewood smoked bacon on a toasted brioche bun.

“It is definitely a meal,” Bertrand said.

“You should get your fill. Any of the burgers are unbelievably great.”

The Range prides itself on its freshness.

“The burgers are never frozen,” Bertrand said. “They are always fresh. We make sure we get new orders every week so we don’t have to freeze anything.”

The restaurant also makes its own tortilla chips and smokes its own meat for such entrees as its smoked brisket tacos.

“It has a unique flavor,” he said.

Other items include ribs, Texas beef

brisket, Maryland crab cakes and stone fired pizza. The Range also does catering.

Bertrand said he always is open to suggestions from customers.

“I want them to feel comfortable in here,” he said. “I love listening to my customers. I want their experience to be the best experience possible.”

22 Temperature shifts help

D

ramatic temperature swings in the fall mean Ned Morris could show up to work in shorts and a polo and leave wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.

The Basel Cellars general manager and winemaker was introduced to the wine through the restaurant industry. As a sommelier, Morris sought out wines with an acidic backbone that could complement meals. The desert of eastern Washington is the ideal location for Morris, who has relished the opportunity to make balanced wines from estate vineyards.

Winemaker spotlight Just like Morris, who adds layers of clothes at night in the fall, the vines at Basel Cellars also undergo a transformation.

While the cold might force Morris to add a sweatshirt, the Basel Cellars’ vines are busy losing layers.

With daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 40s, the vines undergo a dramatic physical change.

In the sunshine they are able to ripen and add sugar.

But as the temperatures rapidly descend and night falls, the grapes develop a crisp acidic balance. It’s the best of both worlds: wines with New World-style fruit development and Old Worldstyle acidity.

“Eastern Washington is so unique,” Morris said.

“There is no place like it in the world. The winemakers here have done a great job of embracing our climate and terroir. The wines from Walla Walla show a great sense of place. Our climate is so northern it is on line with Bordeaux. But we get more sun and cooler nights, which is like the Rhone Valley.”

Because of his experience in the restaurant industry, where Morris sought to marry food with the perfect wine, Basel Cellars has a balanced portfolio.

My training as a sommelier helps me focus on restraint as a winemaker.”

Local musician to offer summer language-learning camps for kids

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After living in Europe for four years, Brianna Smith will return to her native St. Charles to share a unique program that combines music and foreign language-learning for children.

With a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, the musically inclined Smith will offer Music Lingua – German and Spanish foreign language-learning summer camps – in July and August.

Music Lingua is a program that uses music movement, storytelling and art to teach foreign language to children ages 2 to 8 years old (ages up to 10 years old can be considered).

“I just think it will be something fun,” Smith said. “When kids are so young, they learn really quickly. People think, ‘Oh it’s too young to learn,’ but I started playing piano when I was 5 years old, and now I still play.”

Smith said she fully realized music’s ability to connect to memory when she played piano during a previous summer at the Hunter Club Village apartment community for seniors in St. Charles, where her grandma, who experienced brain damage after having a cardiac arrest, resides.

“We were doing these Broadway hits that [my grandma] would have known when she was younger, and right away without even looking at the words, she remembered the lyrics,” Smith said.

In addition to Smith’s love of music, she

discovered a passion for languages after living in Vienna, Austria, and Madrid, Spain, where she learned German and Spanish.

“Music is one of the best ways to learn other things because it breaks down inhibition and makes it fun to learn,” Smith said, adding that – as a certified instructor – she taught English and music through the Helen Doron early English learning schools in Austria and Madrid. “I did it myself in Austria … so why not try it [in St. Charles] and see if it works, because it worked so well there.”

The camps will consist of learning a foreign language through song, vocabulary, visuals, games and crafts. Depending on the level of interest in each language, children will be separated by age, and classes will be coordinated to best fit the schedules of interested participants. The Spanish class theme will be “Under the Sea,” and the German class theme will be “On the Farm.”

The location of the class still is being considered.

“It depends on how many people sign up,” she said. “See how much interest we can drum up and then go from there if we’re going to rent out a space or if we’re going to do it in my basement or in my backyard [in St. Charles].”

If more children sign up, Smith said the MECA music school in South Elgin may be a suitable meeting space.

Director Will Eubank ready for next level with ‘The Signal’

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now Up-and-coming indie film director Will Eubank apologizes at the end of our interview. “I was rambling. I’m sorry.

Give me a little coffee and I go for days,” Eubank said while promoting his new movie, “The Signal,” at the Liberty Hotel in Boston.

You can’t fault the loquacious director for being enthusiastic about his fledgling career and a movie that was the darling at January’s Sundance Film Festival, where the sci-fi mind-bender was purchased by Focus Features.

It tells the trippy story of three M.I.T. students whose cross-country trip turns into an experience straight out of the “Twilight Zone.” Things go wrong for Nic, Jonah and Haley when their side-trip pursuit of a rival hacker lands them prisoner in a government facility surrounded by untalkative guys in haz-mat suits.

Young actors Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent”), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”) and Beau Knapp (“Super 8”) portray the trio.

Laurence Fishburne plays the agent in charge.

“It’s kids sort of trying to find themselves and then happen upon something really crazy,” Eubank said of the film.

“They go down the rabbit hole ... and they’re trying to find their way out.

Through this process, hopefully, they learn more about themselves.”

Hailed as innovative and ambitious, Eubank – like Quentin Tarantino – didn’t go to film school. Instead, he’s drawn on years of experience working at Panavision, the camera rental house. The 31-year-old worked a lot of different jobs on a lot of different movies, all of which prepared him to be a filmmaker. And it all paid off at Sundance.

“As a filmmaker it’s like a merit badge you desperately hope you’re going to get,” Eubank said of the festival. “I had two dreams before I turn 30 – go to Sundance and then get into the DGA. And the Sundance part took a little longer.”

It wasn’t the Holyoke native’s first trip to Park City, Utah.

“Panavision would send me to Sundance to talk about digital cameras … and I would just sit there and see these people, these actors, directors and storytellers and just wish that one day I could be one of them.”

Mission accomplished.

But Eubank said the experience was bittersweet.

“My grandfather lived in Salt Lake City, and he was kind of ... a gruff and crazy character. We called him Old Coyote,” Eubank said. “He was a cinematographer in the Navy, and I would always – on Panavison’s dime – go take him out to dinner. He was like, ‘Someday you’re going to get to Sundance.’ Unfortunately he passed away two years before the film got there. I was bummed.”

When he was younger, Eubank said he either wanted to make movies or go to the Naval Academy.

“I always felt like my granddad was connected to both of those things,” Eubank said.

Ultimately, movies won because you “probably didn’t need to get good grades to be a filmmaker.”

So Eubank started to “climb the ladder.”

He got the job at Panavision to learn the technical side of shooting a film. He borrowed the cameras on weekends to shoot other people’s projects, earning several gigs. “While I was doing that, I was always working on the stuff I was

writing. And then my first film, ‘Love,’ came along. It was all just falling into place. I wouldn’t say any of it was easy, and actually making ‘Love’ was difficult.

But when it was all said and done, I had a film in my pocket that I had directed and built upon everything I had learned up ’til that point. It was like solving a big math problem.”

Eubank parlayed the love he earned from “Love” into “The Signal,” which he wrote with his brother, Carlyle, and David Frigerio. He said it took about three years to transition from script to screen.

“I always buy this big moleskine book ... grab a pencil, because there is going to be a lot of erasing, and start to ... slowly draw every shot I think I’m going to shoot. The last thing I do is draw a little map of the ... space I envision this occurring in and I draw where the cameras will be. Like a bird’s-eye view of where everything’s going to be.

“Then I take that book, which is super thick by now and got a lot of stuff shoved in there, and start location scouting. ...

It’s almost harder to make that book than it is to make the script because that’s where you’re really forced to stare your movie in the face.”

Eubank, who counts directors Ridley and Tony Scott, Christopher Nolan and David Fincher as role models, didn’t have a big budget or much time to shoot on location in Albuquerque.

“I had to make lean-and-strong choices. I really needed to plan. I only have a few takes. I really needed to be surgical about it,” Eubank said. “And with all the pressures that are on set, you’re mind is pulled in different directions. You really need that road map.”

“The Signal” is just his second film, but Eubank said he’s learned two valuable lessons. The first: “A director needs to know where they are in the woods, especially on an indie film, where everything is out of order. That’s a real crazy puzzle.”

The second is casting people that you really believe in, including Fishburne.

“That’s such a legitimizing feeling. He put a lot more into Damon than there was on the page. He lends such an identity and power to a role because of who he is,” Eubank said.

For his next project, Eubank has two ideas percolating: A Scottish Highlander film or military movie.

Lung nodules are not always signs of cancer Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor because I’ve been getting short of breath. He did an X-ray and CT scan that found three small “pulmonary nodules.” Do I have lung cancer?

Dear Reader: There are few things more frustrating, for both you and your doctor, than when the doctor says, “Well, it’s almost surely nothing to worry about ... but there is a small possibility that it’s bad.” How often does that happen? Pretty much every day, in my experience.

The tests we have available today – particularly imaging tests – are much better at spotting possible problems than the tests available when I was in medical school. But how good are they at giving you a clear answer to the simple question, “Do I have something to worry about, doctor?”

Not very good at all.

Pulmonary nodules are a good example. The term nodule usually describes a small rounded growth or lump. Nodules can be a sign of cancer. But more often they are benign (noncancerous) growths.

Pulmonary nodules are found in the lung and have several possible causes. These include: • Lung infections, including infections that occurred years or decades ago.

• Abnormal blood vessels.

• Minor abnormalities that have been present since birth.

• Inflammatory conditions.

• Lung cancer.

• Cancer that started in another organ and spread to the lung.

To determine what caused your nodules, your doctor will perform a thorough evaluation.

This usually starts with your medical history. For example, a small lung nodule in a healthy 40-year-old who quit smoking 15 years ago is probably benign.

On the other hand, several large nodules in a woman with breast cancer could mean the cancer has spread.

Next, your doctor will review your X-rays. Certain characteristics may make the nodules appear more or less worrisome. For example, a smooth growth that’s surrounded by calcium (which appears white on an X-ray) is almost always left over from an old infection.

If a nodule is found on a regu-

lar X-ray, a doctor will likely order a computed tomography (CT) scan, as yours did. Newer types of tests, such as positron emission tomography (PET) scans, can provide additional information to help your doctor determine what caused your nodule. These additional tests are definitely superior to the standard X-ray in telling you there’s nothing to worry about. But they’re not perfect.

If your doctor believes your nodule is benign, he or she may recommend a repeat X-ray or scan in three to six months. At that time, your doctor will check whether the nodule has grown. If the nodule remains the same size, this is usually reassuring.

If your nodule looks suspicious or grows over time, you may need a biopsy. A small piece of the nodule will be removed and examined in a laboratory. That is the best way of knowing what you are dealing with. But it’s a procedure you have to go through, and it’s not as simple as a scan. Someday, scans will be so accurate that you won’t have to go through a biopsy.

Woman shares adoption story Dr. Wallace: This is in response to the 18-year-old girl who found out that she was pregnant. Her boyfriend and her mother were encouraging her to get an abortion. She didn’t like that idea, but was unsure how she could deal with a baby being an unwed mother.

I have a safe and sane solution for her. I was in the identical situation two years ago.

When I was a senior in high school I found out that I was pregnant. I knew that my parents would be hurt and upset when they found out, so I went to my school guidance counselor, and together, we decided to tell my mother and father.

At first they were shocked, but soon they helped me with their love and support.

After a lot of discussion, I decided to give my baby to a loving couple by way of adoption. Many mothers hear the word “adoption” and think that they could never give their baby away. Adoptions today have changed from what they once were.

I went to an agency that gave me profiles of childless couples that were looking to adopt. After reviewing all the profiles, I chose the parents who would raise my baby. We did not meet personally, but we corresponded by mail. Soon I felt I had known them for a long time.

I then went to a support group. Several pregnant girls who were going to place their babies in adoptive homes met once a month with counselors. Together we discussed our feelings

On the day I gave birth to my daughter, I got to spend as much time as I wanted to with her. My parents, grandparents and my best friend all came to the hospital to see a beautiful baby and a happy mother.

After signing legal papers, I had the chance to talk with the adoptive parents by phone. It was a wonderful chance to tell them about how much I appreciated them and to hear their voices.

Two months later I received a letter from the adoptive parents along with a picture of my daughter. We have agreed to correspond every Christmas, and they will keep me informed of my daughter’s progress. It has been arranged that I will get the opportunity to meet my daughter on her 18th birthday. I am looking forward to that time.

Cast your mind back to yesterday’s column. Then look at this one. Maybe you will have a Steven Wright moment.

West is defending against four hearts. He leads off with the club ace: six, queen, nine. How should he hope to defeat the contract?

The bidding is instructive.

North is right to make a takeout double over one club. True, if South does not have a five-card major, the ensuing 4-3 major-suit fit might be worse than a 5-3 or 5-4 diamond fit. But a good South will have a five-card major.

East made a pre-emptive jump raise to three clubs, promising five or more clubs and a weak hand. With game-invitational or greater strength, he would have responded with an artificial two no-trump. (When responder has a big balanced hand, he starts with redouble over an opponent’s takeout double.)

South cue-bid four clubs to show a strong two-suiter. (With a good one-suiter, he would have jumped in that suit.)

How to get just the right rug underfoot

By MARGARET ELY The Washington Post How do you choose the right rug?

Should it be wool or jute, patterned or solid, big or small? Judging from letters to the editor and questions in The Post’s weekly Home Front chat, it’s a subject lots of people have on their minds.

So, we tracked down Lorna Gross-Bryant, a Bethesda, Maryland-based interior designer whose stylish, bold rug choices caught our eye.

Recently honored as one of the top 20 African-American interior designers in the country by design blog Pink Eggshell, Gross-Bryant has been featured in national magazines and participated in several show houses, including the 2013 D.C. Design House.

We chatted with Gross-Bryant about her work and her fondness for rugs, as well as her tips for choosing the right one and trends on the horizon.

Margaret Ely: We noticed some bold area rugs in your work. Can you walk us through some of your choices?

Lorna Gross-Bryant: I have an affinity for rugs that have pattern or a lot of texture. The basic solid-color rug isn’t going to do it for me. My preference is for Tibetan rugs. I like the patterns.

The patterns are more open. It doesn’t let the room look too busy. I see rugs as artwork on the floor. That’s why I lean away from just a solid rug. If I do a rug that is monochromatic, it will have a lot of texture. I love using jute.

It’s a natural fiber, and it’s not too pricey. It’s braided and so pretty. I use it in casual spaces or a more formal space.

I also use hemp in more casual spaces, and I like cowhide rugs.

Ely: What trends in rugs are you seeing right now?

Gross-Bryant: Rugs are becoming much more eco-friendly, with the glues manufacturers are using and with

renewable materials. Any time you can opt for natural fibers, try to. Check out linen, wool and grass. They are always great. I’m seeing new patterns right now. I see chevrons a lot. They are hot right now, as well as shag rugs made of felt. I haven’t used that kind yet, but if I did, I would use them in a contemporary setting or in a child’s room.

Ely: At what point in the design process should someone incorporate a rug – before they start or after they’ve picked everything else?

Gross-Bryant: It’s at the beginning or middle for me. It’s rarely at the end.

It matters what happens after you pick a rug. If a client says they have had a rug for a certain amount of years – maybe it’s a family heirloom. Then we start with a rug. I pull from the colors that are in the rug, and then I determine placement.

Ely: How do you decide on a pattern or color?

Gross-Bryant: It’s all personal preference. Sometimes, you want beige. With beige, the pattern on top of the rug becomes more important because it’s monochromatic. How do we make sure the rug isn’t sterile?

You want to make sure the room has some character. If the room is already put together, you want to make sure it relates. For example, if you have a couple of coral pillows on a sofa, it might be a good idea to bring coral into the rug or get the complement to the coral. Make sure it relates in some way. The goal is to have everything work in concert.

Ely: Any other insider tips?

Gross-Bryant: For safety and durability, put a rug pad under your rug.

And don’t get freaked out if you bring the rug home and it starts shedding.

Just vacuum it. It might be a month and half or so before it stops. It’s not a cheap rug; it’s just a natural thing that occurs.

ST. CHARLES – The former assistant principal at St. Charles East High School has turned to a career in real estate.

Lisa Haymond has earned an Illinois broker’s license and now is a sales associate with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Starck Real Estate in St. Charles. Haymond sees it as a natural transition from a career as an educator to a business that also involves teaching, caring and guiding, states a news release.

Haymond served as the chair of the English department at St. Charles East, followed by her position as Lisa Haymond dean of students and, finally, Provided photo as assistant principal.
