City prepares for 33rd annual RiverFest KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The City of St. Charles RiverFest once again will be an iconic, vibrant and diverse event, according to a news release.

The 33rd annual fest starts Friday and continues through Sunday in downtown St. Charles.

New to the festival this year are demonstrations from the Jack Axe Games, which includes challenges taken from lumberjack and Scottish Highland games, and mixed with throwing cabers, cross-cutting logs, throwing axes, and more, according to the release.

The Jack Axe Games will be during all three days of RiverFest, the release states.

Live performances at the festival will include the 144th Army National Guard Dixie Land Band, which consists of 38 citizen-soldiers, according to the release.

The Jesse White Tumblers also will perform for the first time in St. Charles at RiverFest, the release states.

The crafter and vintage markets at the fest will include the “Digging for Treasure Jewelry Faire” to benefit Anderson Animal Shelter from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday behind the St. Charles Municipal Center, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

“We are continually striving to bring new and unique attractions to RiverFest while maintaining and improving the popular ones – Dragon Boat Racing, the Water Ski performance and the free music shows,” wrote Jon Olson, co-founder and past board president of Pride of the Fox, which organizes RiverFest. “I think the new attractions added in 2015 are outstand-

There will be a few street closures in downtown St. Charles to accommodate the festival, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

Riverside Avenue and First Street will be closed between Main and Illinois streets. Walnut Avenue will be closed between Riverside Avenue and South Second Avenue, according to the release.

South Second Avenue will remain open to vehicle traffic, but there will be parking restrictions posted, according to St. Charles police.

Motorists who normally travel these streets are encouraged to find alternate routes of travel from 5 a.m.

parking lots, the release states.

There will be a significant increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and around the downtown area during the three-day festival. The majority of traffic will be on Main Street between Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue, according to the release.

City officials eye repairs to Batavia Government Center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia officials are looking at a five-year plan to make improvements and repairs to the Batavia Government Center complex at 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

Those repairs and improvements include replacing the building’s 33-year-old windows, performing tuckpointing and addressing fire, safety and security issues. The Batavia Government Center is in the former Appleton windmill factory, which was built in 1901.

Aldermen had hired Lane Allen, of Allen+Pepa Architects, to do a condition assessment report on the Batavia Government Center, which houses city offices, the Batavia City Council Chambers, the Batavia Police Department and The Albright Theatre Company.

“This is to give the city a blueprint to go forward with,” Batavia Water and Sewer Division Superintendent John Dillon told aldermen during Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

In some areas, there are rotting frames, foggy windows, windows caulked shut, deteriorated hardware and inoperable awnings.

In his report to aldermen, Allen proposed the city buy all the new windows in the second year of the improvement program, and to begin replacing the windows that year.

During the first year of the program, he suggested the city do such work as elevator upgrades, add fire protection to the computer server room and

tuckpointing the building’s south facade before window replacement in the second year.

Allen also proposed the city address fire, safety and security issues.

The budgeted cost per year for the work is 1 percent to 2 percent of the building’s total value, which Allen said is $20 million.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the building has proven to be a bargain for taxpayers.

“At the end of the day, the taxpayers in this town have been well-served by the building,” he said.

That awkward moment when ...

Geneva History Museum showcasing ‘Awkward Family Photos’ exhibit

By MADELINE HAPPOLD mhappold@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Sometimes the past is better left forgotten, like ‘80s hairstyles or a family vacation gone wrong.

Well, things are about to get a little awkward because the Geneva History Museum’s current exhibition is paying homage to embarrassing memories.

On Saturday, the Geneva History Museum, 113 S. 3rd St., Geneva, unveiled the “Awkward Family Photos” exhibit, comprised of 200 embarrassing family portraits that practically every family has but hates to share. Geneva will be the first Midwest stop for the nationally-traveling exhibit.

The exhibit’s idea stems from AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com, a website co-founded in 2009 by Mike Bender and Doug Chermack. The idea was inspired by Bender’s own embarrassing family photo, which showed Bender and his brother posing with their dad during a family ski trip.

“It’s a little bit out of the box for a museum, but I think it’s what we need to do to keep attracting new people,” said Terry Emma, executive director of the Geneva History Museum. “I think museums need to think more entertainment-wise because that’s what people want, and this is definitely leaning toward the more en-

Walking through the exhibit, one is transported to grandma’s house. The furniture and wallpaper, courtesy of Strawflower Shop in Geneva, exude a vintage vibe.

And, of course, the walls are covered in cringe-worthy family photos relatives hold so near and dear.

The exhibit is separated into themes, such as family, vacations and kids. Photos include candids, odd family portraits and a few photo bombs.

People’s reactions go from laughter to, “What were they thinking?” Emma said.

“You can’t stage this

stuff,” Emma said. “It’s real life happening.”

Leann Heard, a volunteer at the Geneva History Museum, thinks the exhibit is relatable to all families.

“We all have pictures that we haven’t put on the walls,” said Heard. “That’s what makes it so funny because you can just see how that could happen.”

Keeping with the exhibit’s theme, the museum created its own awkward photo showcase, displaying archived Geneva photos of awkwardness gone down in history. These local images include ancient photo bombs and some unusual moments preserved.

Walker escaped at about 10 p.m. Monday from the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles, which is a medium-security facility. Walker had been taken to the Illinois Youth Center on June 4, after a parole violation for pending burglary charges, Theodore said he could not say how long it had been since someone escaped from the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles.

“The extensive coordina-

tion by state and local law enforcement led to his capture,” the release stated.

“The entities that supported the search include: Department of Corrections Apprehension Unit, United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Task Force, Illinois State Police, Kane and DuPage County Sheriff’s office, St. Charles Police, and Chicago Police.”

Further details about the capture were not yet available.

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice plans to do a comprehensive review of all of its youth facilities, including the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles, in response to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s plan to close as many as two youth prisons to fill a budget gap.

Rauner recently released details of the steps he is taking to balance a proposed budget that is nearly $4 billion in the hole. In a news release, Rauner stated that with the capacity of the state’s youth prisons at 1,200 beds and with less than 700 occupied, the juvenile system has a surplus of capacity.

“We are conducting a review of all facilities,” Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice spokesman Mike Theodore said. He said the review is being done in response to Rauner’s statement.

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice operates six youth prisons.

The Illinois Youth Center, located at 3825 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles, opened in December 1904, according to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice’s website. The facility has a capacity of 348, and an average daily population of 328.

The average age of an inmate at the center is 16.

The medium-security facility processes the majority of all male youth committed to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice.

In 2013, the average stay in a Illinois youth prison was nine months, Theodore said.

Bar expected to serve customers by end of July

sell liquor at their store at 147 S. Randall Road in Batavia.

Batavia aldermen in April approved changes to the city’s liquor code to allow businesses other than restaurants to sell liquor.

K. Hollis Jewelers is the first business to apply for a liquor license since aldermen approved the changes. Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee

of the Whole meeting recommended approval of the changes, and the recommendation will go to the full Batavia City Council on Monday.

Karen Hollis said they would like to recreate the atmosphere of Gibby’s Wine Den in Geneva, which closed last year.

“That was such a fun place to gather,” Hollis said. “We

wanted to add another new dimension to the store.”

Hollis said the wine bar fits in with wanting their customers to feel like they are walking into a house. She hopes the custom-made bar will be ready for its first customers by July.

“You could go sit down, get a glass of wine, and talk with people,” she said. “I love people coming together.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The swift actions of four lifeguards at Harold Hall Quarry Beach in Batavia Wednesday saved a boy’s life, officials said.

The lifeguards were present during the boy’s swimming test at about 2:30 p.m Wednesday at the beach when he went underwater, according to a Batavia Fire Department news release.

Staff immediately removed the boy from the water and rendered first aid, the release states.

The Batavia Fire Department arrived at 2:37 p.m. for a report of a possible drowning, according to the release. Batavia fire and police personnel instead found the boy out of the water, conscious and breathing while being treated by pool staff.

The boy was treated and taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, but his exact condition was not immediately available late Wednesday

afternoon.

“I’m really proud of the heroic actions that the Quarry lifeguards took today,” said Allison Niemela, executive director of the Batavia Park District, which includes the beach. “The lifeguards have been put on a series of safety trainings, and today they pulled through with flying colors in an effort to save the child’s life.”

It is standard procedure for the park district to call 911 as soon as a situation that might involve a drowning is unfolding, Niemela said.

The park district’s lifeguards are typically a blend of high school and college-aged students who are put through several training sessions, she said.

The Batavia Park Board at its next meeting Tuesday plans to honor the four lifeguards involved with saving the child, Niemela said. The park board meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Batavia Park District Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

Public Information Meeting on Proposed Project at Fermilab Interested citizens are invited to a public information meeting to learn about the potential environmental impacts of a new science project planned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), at its Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

The proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) would send a beam of neutrinos 800 miles through the earth from Fermilab in Illinois to a new detector at the Sanford Lab in South Dakota. Fermilab has been conducting neutrino experiments for 30 years and several years ago constructed a similar project that sends neutrinos from Fermilab through the earth to a detector in Minnesota. This new project would build on the results from that research. The LBNF would greatly broaden scientific understanding of neutrinos, which make up a significant portion of our universe.

DOE has prepared an environmental documents under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act to identify and evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the proposed project.

The LBNF public information meeting at Fermilab will feature a range of illustrative posters and brief presentations on the proposed project and the NEPA process, followed by an opportunity for the community to discuss or comment on the project with LBNF scientists and leaders. AURORA – An Aurora man was charged in connection to a Sunday heroin seizure, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday in a news release.

Avran Lechuga, 26, of the 700 block of Superior Street, Aurora, was charged with three Class X felonies – controlled substance trafficking, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance, the release states.

About 4.67 pounds of heroin, with a street value of about $2.1 million, was seized from

Lechuga’s apartment, along with $7,600 and a .22-caliber handgun, according to the release.

Lechuga picked up a package containing a large amount of heroin after 1 p.m. Sunday at the Aurora Transportation Center, 233 N. BroadAvran way, Aurora, Lechuga the release states.

Kane County Sheriff detectives initially intercepted the package as part of a drug interdiction operation, and they

County official appointed to associate judge position

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Divya Sarang, who has worked at the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office for more than 20 years, has been appointed as an associate judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit.

She will fill the position of retiring Judge Leonard Wojtecki, and is expected to take her position on the bench on July 1.

“I am incredibly honored,” Sarang said. “My one and only goal is to do the job to the best of my ability and to be fair to all parties.”

She emerged from a field of 27 candidates. Sarang graduated from Hindu College in Delhi. Before coming to the United States, Sarang was a lawyer in India and practiced before the Supreme Court of India.

After moving to the United States, she received a law

degree from Northern Illinois University. She began her career as a defense attorney and conflict counsel in Winnebago County and began with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office in 1993.

She is the chair of the Diversity Committee of the Kane County Bar Association.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon had high praise for Sarang.

“Divya has been an asset to our office and to Kane County for many reasons – largely because she has such diverse experiences, from having been raised and educated in India

and earning a second law degree in the United States, to her experiences in many aspects of criminal and civil law,” McMahon stated in a news release.

“In her 22 years with our office, Divya has always conducted herself with great character and integrity,” McMahon added. “Her experience, professionalism and humility will make her an asset to Kane County as a judge, just as those characteristics have made her an asset as a lawyer and prosecutor. The people of Kane County will be well served by her commitment to fairness.”

Lots of summer fun in store The sun is shining, birds are chirping and the temperature is finally staying above 70 degrees on a regular basis.

School’s out and the pool is open. That can only mean one thing: At long last, summer has arrived.

To say the very least, I’ve been looking forward to summer for a while. These past few weeks have been filled with intense schoolwork, nonstop studying, end-of-year activities and of course everyone’s favorite – final exams.

I’ve been stressed out and sleep deprived, but now that school is over, I don’t have to worry about homework and can sleep later than 6 a.m.

One of the things I’m most looking forward to this month is my first mission trip. I’ll head to Cabo, Mexico, with my church, First Baptist Church of Geneva. We’ll be participating in many service-oriented activities, from construction projects to leading a Vacation Bible School for local children.

As an added bonus, we’ll get to take a boat tour of the scenery and go to the beach. I’m definitely looking forward to the experience; I think it will be an excellent way for me to step out of my comfort zone while helping others at the same time. It also will be my first trip out of the country, and I can’t wait to see the new culture. Expect more details in future columns when I return.

School hasn’t completely disappeared from my summer schedule, however. I’m taking a personal finance course in mid-July, in hopes of opening up an elective space my junior or senior year of high school.

I’m sure my check-writing and budgeting skills will be much improved after the class wraps up, and although spending five hours in a classroom each day for three weeks isn’t my first choice, I think it’ll be worth it in the long run.

I also have to read “The Scarlet Letter” over the summer for English II honors, accompanied by a handful of

However, the things I’m looking forward to most about summer are the things that aren’t necessarily big or grand. I’m looking forward to the sunny mornings and lazy afternoons, the times spent with friends and family, the ice cream cones and icy beverages enjoyed in the warmer weather. It’s these small things that make summer so enjoyable for me, and the things that linger in my mind long after school is back in session.

In my opinion, that’s exactly what summer should be: An opportunity to appreciate the little things and just take a break from the hustle and bustle of the school year.

Hopefully, I’ll make the most of my summer, and it will be everything I want it to be.

Because unfortunately, before I know it, it’ll be mid-August and you know what that means – back to school.

So cherish these brief months, because they’ll be gone before you know it. Let’s get summer underway!

Holes in Uncle Sam’s security THE WASHINGTON POST Federal officials said new tools allowed them to discover a massive breach of government-employee data by hackers suspected of working for the Chinese state. We would imagine that achievement will not inspire much gratitude among the millions whose personal data were violated.

No doubt they, as well as U.S. taxpayers, are wondering why their government seems so incapable of protecting sensitive information from cyberattacks.

The Obama administration disclosed last week that the computer system of the Office of Personnel Management, which handles federal employee records and security clearances, had been hacked.

The breach, affecting about four million current and former government workers, was detected in April but appears to have dated back to December. The hackers, apparently

targeting Social Security numbers and other personal identifying information, have been linked by cybersecurity experts to thefts of similar personal data from two major U.S. health care firms. Administration officials did not publicly identify the attackers, but The Post’s Ellen Nakashima quoted sources identifying the hackers as state-sponsored.

The Chinese foreign ministry dismissed the claims as jumping to conclusions.

What’s so disconcerting about the breach – other than its massive scale and possible value to Chinese espionage, of course – is that it is just one in a series of intrusions into vital computer systems of the U.S. government. The White House and the State Department last year discovered their email systems had been compromised in an attack linked to Russian hackers. The OPM was the target of a smaller attack last year. Last week, the Internal Revenue Service said

identity thieves had illegally obtained tax information on more than 100,000 households.

High-profile cyberattacks on such private companies as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Target prompted the White House to push the private sector to improve protections of its computer networks and share information on best methods. So, there’s an unfortunate irony in the vulnerability of federal computer networks, which, as Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, noted, Americans expect to be “maintained with stateof-the-art defenses.”

Measures taken so far are clearly insufficient. We hope the breach at the OPM – among the largest thefts ever of government data – awakens the administration and Congress to the need for a robust strategy that puts safeguards in place and promises consequences for the people and countries who try to violate them.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

ST. CHARLES – Valley Lodge Tavern owner Bill Stavrou hopes his restaurant will create as many traditions and lasting memories as the former McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub did when it was open.

In April, Valley Lodge Tavern opened at 109 W. Main St. in St. Charles in the building that previously housed McNally’s. McNally’s was open for 16 years in downtown St. Charles.

Stavrou also owns Valley Lodge restaurants in Glenview and Wilmette.

He purchased McNally’s in April 2014 from previous owner Maurice McNally.

Graham’s 318 Coffeehouse garners national recognition

The 3rd Street business recently landed on People magazine’s list of must-visit coffee shops in the U.S. The online article, entitled “24 Coffee Shops in America You Have to Visit,” was published May 28 on People’s website with the excerpt: “Not a coffee drinker? This popular spot has a pastry kitchen upstairs, where bakers prepare delightful cakes, muffins, croissants and more. The real decadence? Their homemade gelato.”

Graham’s 318, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, was one of three Illinois coffee shops to make the list. Bourgeois Pig in Lincoln Park and Kafein in Evanston also landed spots.

Two days after the online article was published, a regular customer told employee Talia Duncan about the news, which was then passed on to owners Robert and Beckie Untied, said Jayni Wunderlich, Graham’s 318 vice president and the owners’ daughter.

When the family found out about the article, Wunderlich said they were blown away.

“We’re just amazed,” Wunderlich said of being recognized on a national level. “It’s such a validation for owning our own little coffeehouse, that we’re doing everything right, basically, [and]

that people keep coming back for more, and they obviously share the love with others.”

The love for the coffee shop certainly was shared when a Facebook post referencing the People magazine listing received 250 “shares” and 1,000 “likes,” said Wunderlich, who handles the coffee shop’s social media channels.

“It’s one thing to get a bunch of ‘likes,’ but to actually have 250 different businesses and people share the article ... that was just so cool,” Wunderlich said.

Often a busy spot for coffee drinkers, the day after she shared the news on Facebook, Wunderlich said business was “insane,” but couldn’t necessarily make the correlation between the popularity of the post and an uptick in sales, since it also was the “first warm Sunday in a while.”

How the coffee shop landed a spot

on the list of 24 remains a mystery.

Wunderlich said she reached out to contacts at the magazine to thank them for the coverage, but hasn’t yet received a response.

Aside from “good coffee that is locally roasted,” Wunderlich offered her own reasoning for the recognition: a full espresso bar; home-made gelato; a knowledgeable staff; and its pastry chef, who bakes fresh pastries seven days a week.

For now, Wunderlich plans to play up the buzz during Swedish Days, but – other than that – things will remain business as usual.

“For us, we’re just going to keep going and keep doing what we do. We’re not going to do anything differently,” Wunderlich said. “We feel like whatever formula we have is working.”

Run a mile, you say? And how.

Blazing to a Class 2A 1,600-meter state title at Eastern Illinois University last month, Martin, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, completed a prep career that began with her as a Royals soccer midfielder.

In those days, she couldn’t have told you her top mile time, much less fathomed track athletes’ constantly ongoing discourse about per-

sonal records.

“At first, it was pretty taxing,” Martin said, “but then I caught on quickly and it became comfortable fast.”

At state, Martin finished with a personal best, the ultimate runner’s high. Her winning time was 4:56.51.

A week earlier, the St. Charles resident won the 1,600 at the Plano Sectional in 5:03.04. Junior teammate and training partner Madison Ronzone followed Martin 4.55 seconds later, in second place.

Ronzone tightened the gap to 3.63 seconds at state, but nonetheless finished as runner-up.

She hardly minded either time.

“Emily’s great,” said Ronzone, a Batavian. “She’s really

“It was great knowing that the only person in front of me was one of my teammates.”

Martin followed the welltread path of running cross country in the fall to build stamina for soccer in the spring.

As a Rosary junior in 2013,

she “just fell in love” with cross country after helping the Royals advance to the state meet in Peoria as a team.

“It was just very rewarding to see all your hard work pay off, and definitely the camaraderie is a great part of the sport that really drew me in,” Martin said.

It’s not that soccer lacked those attributes – it had orange slices, too – but Martin’s newfound enjoyment certainly prompted an inner conflict.

On one foot, she had soccer, a sport with family history she started playing in preschool, shortly after her family moved from Marietta, Georgia, to accommodate her father Jeff’s new job.

On the other, there wasn’t just cross country but track,

which the IHSA contests during the spring season, the same time as girls soccer.

“It was a difficult decision because I’ve played soccer such a long time and I still love the sport, so it was definitely a risk to switch to track, but it definitely paid off,” Martin said.

Coaches at NCAA Division I Creighton, where Martin will compete in cross country and track, can attest to that.

Ditto for the Royals’ Vic Mead, who coached Martin in both sports at Rosary.

“Good runners always make for good coaching,” Mead said, “because you have to make sure you don’t do anything wrong.”

Martin showed marked improvement between her junior and senior cross country seasons, culminating with an 11th-place, all-state finish in the state meet in November.

Her state time of 17:49 was 1:21 faster than her junior season.

In her track debut, Martin, then a junior, largely focused on the 800, with the season including a collaboration with Rosary’s 10th-place 4x800 meter relay at state.

Still, Martin struggled to pinpoint “that comfortable feel” she experienced in the mile, a favorite distance dating to her physical education days at St. Peter School in Geneva. She stayed true to her 800 roots during her senior state series, however, joining Ronzone, Shea Vero and Mallory Rettenmeier on the state runner-up 4x800 in 9:33.51.

Montini’s 4x800 quartet edged the Royals by almost three seconds in that race, but Martin soon would get the better of another down-to-thewire finish.

Martin channeled her finishing kick in the final 600 meters, taking the lead and the state title, but not before one final push from Ronzone.

“She’s been great about the whole thing, and it’s always great to have a teammate to run with and encourage you,” Martin said.

“Actually, when I passed her, she was able to say ... as I was running: ‘Go Emily, you got this.’ ” Well before the medal and the lofty perch atop the podium, Martin earned comforting closure with her supportive former soccer teammates and a new bond with Rosary’s track team.

Resting for summer training over the past few weeks – Martin said her calves “hurt a lot” – she is eager to resume running soon, especially with Ronzone recently slipping under five minutes in the 1,600 at an event in St. Louis.

The girls typically stay away from head-to-head racing during training, but maybe that’s subject to change.

Ask Martin to run a mile, and it’s tough for her to resist.

SPORTS BRIEF Palmer Cup descending on Rich Harvest Farms

SUGAR GROVE – The opening ceremony of the Palmer Cup, a three-day, match-play event pitting the top collegians from the United States against their European counterparts, is set for 6 p.m. today at Rich Harvest Farms.

Hall coached at Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, last year, then moved back to Crystal Lake in June. He worked at Prairie Ridge as a dean’s assistant parapro and wanted to get a spot on Pecoraro’s staff, but then learned the St. Francis head coaching job was open.

Now, Hall is going to sign a contract as St. Francis’ director of admissions for next year, so he no longer will work in one school and drive to another for practices and games.

The Spartans suffered a significant loss in the winter when junior pitcher Ryan Hodges, who touches 90 mph on speed guns, underwent Tommy John surgery. St. Francis still managed to make its way back to the final four.

Jason Sullivan, who will play shortstop at Central Michigan, was a starter on the runner-up team two years ago and has been outstanding on the mound (11-1, 0.80 ERA).

Hall calls him “one of the most special pitchers he’s seen at the high school level.”

“I knew we had a good group,” Hall said. “I knew we had to play the right brand of baseball and play hard. Our kids do everything they can to be a tough out, take the extra base and play as hard as they can.”

Nick Hall scarcely knew anything about St. Francis in October, other than its baseball head coaching position was open and he was interested.

The 2002 Prairie Ridge graduate did some quick studying, knocked the interview out of the park and now stands two victories Nick Hall from taking the Spartans to the Class 3A state championship.

“It’s crazy,” Hall said. “I told the kids, ‘Don’t take this for granted.’ Teams go 10, 15, 20 years without a chance to compete for a state championship.”

Hall would know. Glen Pecoraro, a close friend and mentor, started the Prairie Ridge program when it opened in 1997-98 and, although he stepped away from 2007 through 2009, he finally got his first shot last year.

Hall gets to take a team to state in his first season.

St. Francis, 26-9 and on a massive offensive playoff roll, takes on Nazareth Academy at 10 a.m. Friday at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field in the first Class 3A semifinal. Hall has no real explanation for why the Spartans have outscored their playoff opponents, 56-2.

“It’s mind-boggling,” he said. “Our backbone all year has been defense and throwing strikes and changing speeds. It just so happens that we’ve been killing the ball lately, which doesn’t hurt.”

The Spartans lost to Joliet Catholic, 5-0, in the Class 3A state championship game two years ago.

Hall, a 6-foot-4 righthander, was a hard thrower who enjoyed a career at Northern Illinois University and pitched for the Phillies and Padres organizations before spending time with the Crestwood-based Windy City Thunderbolts of the independent Frontier League.

A shoulder injury ended his playing career and opened up another door, one he did not see coming.

Knights embrace ‘huge factor’ of Morrow

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Kaneland right-hander Angie Morrow often has dealt in zeroes since transferring from Burlington Central before the 2013-14 school year.

Her senior softball postseason, which continues with Friday’s Class 3A state semifinal against Marengo at EastSide Centre in East Angie Peoria, includes Morrow four shutouts in five games.

Morrow’s postseason ERA is 0.66 – three earned runs (and five overall) in 32 innings. Once a regional rival, the Knights have relished learning more about Morrow than she allows opponents.

“We played against each other, so we used to be big rivals when were younger, but as we got older, we got a lot better [between us],” Knights senior catcher Paige Kuefler said. “It’s awesome having Angie. She’s just a huge factor to our team. … We’re good friends now.”

Kuefler (Kane County Xplosion) and Morrow (Wasco Diamonds) play on different travel teams, but their collaboration helped pave the way for Kaneland’s first state tournament appearance since 2000.

“She always hits her spots,” Kuefler smiled. “Personally, having a pitcher miss her spot is one of my biggest pet peeves ever.”

Junior Mary Lynn Clausen, the Knights’ designated player in place of the Wisconsin-bound Morrow in the batting order, marvels at her efficiency, too.

“We knew about her. We knew she was a very good pitcher, but that’s really all we knew,” Clausen said. “And then she came to our team, and we’ve gotten this far.”

Controlling common triggers can lessen migraine frequency Dear Doctor K: I suffer from excruciating migraine headaches.

What can I do to prevent them?

Dear Reader: Migraines are severe, throbbing, often debilitating headaches. They can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting. It’s no wonder that anyone who suffers from migraines would do anything to avoid them.

Migraines can be triggered by certain activities, foods, smells or emotions. Common migraine triggers include: • Caffeine (either too much or cutting back on regular use).

• Certain foods and beverages.

These include foods and drinks that contain tyramine (aged cheeses and meats, fermented beverages), sulfites (preserved foods, wines) and monosodium glutamate (MSG), a common flavor enhancer.

• Stress.

• The opposite: relaxing after a stressful day or week. Many people get their migraines most often on the weekends.

• Hormone levels (menstrual cycles, medications such as birth control pills that contain hormones).

• Lack of sleep.

• Changes in weather or altitude.

• Overuse of pain-relieving medications.

If you can identify a trigger,

But some people get frequent and severe migraines no matter how well they avoid triggers. If your migraine attacks are severe, do not respond to treatment or occur more than four times a month, look into the following preventive treatments: • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (tens). The FDA approved the first TENS device for migraine prevention in 2014. Placed on the forehead, it applies an electrical current that stimulates nerves in the brain that process pain.

• Preventive medications.

Several types of medications are used to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. These include beta blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, calcium-channel blockers and anticonvulsants.

There are some studies that suggest taking low-dose aspirin every day may reduce the frequency of migraines. I suffered from migraines in my 30s, and daily low-dose aspirin has eliminated them nearly completely.

On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a table listing examples of each type of drug that has been well studied. These medications must be taken every day to be effective.

• Botox injections. If you experience more than 14 migraines per month, botulinum toxin (Botox) injections may help reduce their number.

• New approaches. One of the most anticipated new treatments (still in clinical trials) involves biological compounds that target CGRP, a chemical in the body that inflames nerve endings.

It is also a strong blood vessel dilator. As blood vessels widen in response to CGRP, they press on nerves that trigger pain. It’s a vicious cycle: When activated, the nerves release more CGRP into the bloodstream. Blood levels of CGRP rise during migraine attacks and decline as headaches subside. The new treatments are designed to prevent migraines by deactivating CGRP for stretches of time.

As someone who has experienced migraines, I hope one or more of these approaches will offer relief from your pain.

Teen wants to earn Ph.D. fast Dr. Wallace: I’m considered to be a “bright student.” I’m in the 11th grade, and I plan to attend a college or university in the fall of 2016.

I’ve read that several colleges and universities will permit selected students to graduate in three years instead of four. This takes place when the student takes an additional class or two each of the six semesters of undergraduate work. I’m really interested in this type of program because I want to earn my Ph.D. as fast as I can so I can become a college teacher in the field of biology.

My counselor isn’t in favor of this three-year degree program because she thinks it places too much pressure on the student. Actually, I thrive under pressure – the more the better.

I see that you hold a doctorate, so you should be able to give me some guidance on my early college graduation plan.

How much time did it take for you to earn your various degrees?

– Ian, Hartford, Connecticut Dear Ian: The majority of three-year undergraduate degree candidates choose this plan because it saves a year of tuition and additional fees. It appears that you would be a viable candidate for such a program, especially since you thrive under pressure. But unless funding is a concern for the fourth year, I would encourage you to opt for the traditional four-year program. This will allow you to participate in the full range of social and cultural activities as well as the academic experiences that a college or university life presents.

I earned my undergraduate degree in a

Furniture fair mad for modern

By NIGEL F. MAYNARD Special to The Washington Post National and global brands catering to lovers of modern design and contemporary furniture exhibited their hottest wares last month at the 27th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Held annually in New York, ICFF (as it’s known to the design cognoscenti) is the most important design show in the country. Modern comes in many forms, but here are seven developments to keep in mind: • Retro. Mid-century modern is having a moment, but it’s not all about “Mad Men.” Americans, it seems, are feeling nostalgic, which may account for the popularity of Edison light bulbs, Mason jars and handlebar mustaches (at least among the hipster set). Manufacturers are meeting this demand. One Collection has revived the 45 Chair from Danish designer Finn Juhl, and M2L has reissued the discontinued 1972 Deep Tuft sectional sofa from designer Harvey Probber.

• Bold colors. Just because you’re a modernist doesn’t mean your only option is white. Colored chairs from Bernhardt, bold wallcovering from Trove and vibrant lighting from Niche Modern were among the many bright-hued options at the show.

• Multifunctional design. Architects often talk about rooms that accommodate multiple functions, and industrial designers are taking note. Products at the show included Ecotono’s Feeler pendant light with an integrated Blue-

tooth speaker, Mio Feltforms decorative panels that double as acoustic tiles, and Oso Industries’ concrete Rollerboy rolling table/stool/ottoman.

• Wood. Warm and attractive, wood is the preferred material for furniture makers; modern designers are simply playing with new forms.

Examples of this strategy include Todd St. John’s Relief credenza and Benjamin Klebba’s Swift chair.

• Minimalism. Industrial designer Dieter Rams once said, “Good design is as little design as possible.” Some designers take this literally, introducing products that seem barely designed and barely there. The Zelda 2 pendant from Bec Brittain, for example, is a slim fixture made of brass tubes and thin LED bulbs. Bocci expanded the Series 22 minimalist flush-mount outlets, and Hollis + Morris introduced the ultra-minimalist Bennington pendant.

• Geometric forms. Not all modernists prefer straight lines; angles and geometric shapes are trending. At the show, Westkill offered its Drift screen-printed clock, Nanoleaf premiered the Nanoleaf One geometric LED light bulb, and Tagina showed its Details hexagon tiles.

• Industrial chic. Products catering to consumers looking for an authentic industrial vibe have been growing in popularity for years. Sun Valley Bronze showed the solid bronze Pendant Pulley light; THG offered the Beaubourg collection that pays homage to vintage hub-and-pipe systems; and Watermark Designs expanded the Elan Vital industrial line for the kitchen.
