Literacy Volunteers student honored North Aurora resident receives Spotlight on Achievement award

North Aurora resident Thu Tran (left) was recently honored with a statewide Spotlight on Achievement award to recognize what she has achieved as a student in the St. Charlesbased Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley program. As part of the honor, she received a $200 check, which she presented to Literacy Volunteers Executive Director Peg Coker (right) on Tuesday at the Messenger Public Library in North Aurora.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – When Thu Tran said that when she arrived in North Aurora in 2009 from Vietnam, she didn’t even know enough English to order lunch at a Subway restaurant.

But thanks to Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, she said her English is getting better and better.

The St. Charles nonprofit organization provides free, one-to-one literacy tutoring to adults.

In recognition of her efforts, Tran, 35, was one of 10 students statewide who recently received a 2014 Spotlight on Achievement award. The award was presented by Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White, along with Dennis DeRossett, executive director of the Illinois Press Association.

“I was very honored to meet them,” Tran said. “I’m very appreciative of the honor.”

Literacy Volunteers tutor Mary Sterner of St. Charles, who has been working with Tran for the past couple of months, also said she was proud of Tran’s success.

“I can’t imagine going to a country and not knowing any of the language, and accomplishing as much as she has,” Sterner said.

Tran’s previous Literacy Volunteer tutor, Elaine Leist, helped her to become a U.S. citizen in 2010. Leist recently

moved out of state. Tran said her improved English skills will help her immensely in her job.

She works at Donna 1 Nails salon in Batavia, which is owned by her sister-in-law, Donna Nguyen.

“When I started there, I didn’t know the language,” Tran said. “I had to talk to the clients, and my sister-in-law was helping me.”

Tran is the first student from Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley to receive a Spotlight on Achievement Award.

Two of the organization’s tutors in the past have received Spotlight on Service awards,

said Peg Coker, Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley executive director.

“Our program revolves around the volunteers and the students,” Coker said. “Their success is our success. We teach our volunteers as best we can. The lessons are all planned by tutors.”

And thanks to Tran, the organization will be able to train more tutors.

Tran is giving the $200 prize she won as part of the Spotlight on Achievement award to Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley.

“I want other students to have the same opportunities that I have had,” Tran said.

Kaneland Foundation 5K Cross Country Race

WHAT: The Kaneland Foundation will host its third annual 5K Cross Country Race. The 5K will be timed, and awards will be offered in age groups and overall categories. All runners will get a T-shirt, provided they are registered by June 15.

WHAT: Kane County will host a free residential recycling and document shredding event. Items being collected for reuse or recycling include electronics, books, bikes and bike parts, sewing machines, mobility devices, fluorescent lamps, clothes, linens, backpacks, stuffed animals, carpet and carpet padding, latex paint and more.

Local band competing for record contract

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Local band, Spectators, will compete today with 23 other bands for the chance to win a record deal as part of VH1’s “Make a Band Famous” competition.

“We are very excited,” said Josiah Viland, a Batavia resident and the lead singer of Spectators.

“There will be a live audience.”

The 24-hour event will stream live starting at 7 p.m. today.

As part of the event, the band will have to go through different challenges.

“In the first challenge, we will have to play a song in exactly 60 seconds,” said Walter Halliwell, who plays guitar and synthesizer in the band.

“They wanted to see how good we are by being flexible and on our toes.”

People can vote for the band by tweeting a vote containing #SpectatorsMusic or #MABF. Multiple tweets count, as

“Voting is something that the judges [will] take in consideration,” Viland said.

The winner of the competition will receive a grand prize that includes a record contract with Republic Records and exposure on VH1’s show “You Oughta Know.”

Spectators, which describes its sound as indie-space-dance-punk/rejuvenation, formed three years ago.

The band’s members are from Batavia, Aurora and South Elgin.

The band members drove all night starting Monday in order to make it to New York City in time for the contest.

“We haven’t slept in 32 hours, but that’s rock ‘n’ roll,” Halliwell said.

Pheasant Run appoints general manager

Other Pheasant Run staff additions this year include Tiffany Tooker, who in April was named executive chef to oversee the entire culinary division at the resort.

Pheasant Run was sold in March to Saint Charles Resort LLC, a collaborative group of experienced hotel investors and operators, according to an earlier news release.

Hostmark Hospitality Group will manage the property and oversee a $5 million capital improvement project designed to rejuvenate the resort, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – A hotel industry veteran was appointed as the new general manager at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

Charlie Shirk will oversee the resort, located at 4051 E. Main St. on the far east side of St. Charles.

Shirk’s first day as manager was May 30, said Jeanne Hahn, Pheasant Run’s director of sales and marketing.

Shirk has more than 30 years of experience in the

hotel industry and has been general manager at various hotels across the U.S., including locations for Hilton, Marriott, Radisson and Sheraton, according to the release.

Shirk worked in the Lisle area in the 1990s and also in Northbrook in the early 2000s, Hahn said.

“It is wonderful to be back in the Midwest,” Shirk wrote in the release. “Being part of such a landmark resort is just incredible.”

Shirk also wrote that he looks forward to working with the established Pheasant Run team and leading the resort into the future.

COVER STORY A PERMANENT REMEMBRANCE Funeral homes start offering pet cremation services

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Ben and Gloria Grado of Geneva were devastated when their 13-year-old cockapoo, Bailey, was attacked in April by a coyote who had gotten in their backyard.

Bailey’s injuries were so severe, the Grados felt they had no choice but to put her to sleep. But they wanted to keep a permanent remembrance of their beloved pet in their home.

The couple turned to Moss Family Funeral Homes, which recently started offering pet cremations. Moss operates funeral homes in Batavia and St. Charles.

“We have a real love for animals, especially dogs,” Ben Grado said. “We treat them as if they are human.”

Bailey now rests in an urn in the couple’s house that is imprinted with her paw print.

Ben Grado said he was impressed with the compassion that Moss owner/funeral director Bryan Moss and his staff showed toward them.

“They treat you like you are dealing with a human being,” he said.

Moss Family Funeral Homes has been offering pet cremations since fall 2013 through Moss Family Paws, a division of the funeral home.

“I saw there was a need in this area for families who wanted to properly memorialize their family member,” Moss said. “This is what we do.

We help people when they lose a loved one.”

Moss said he knows the attachment that people have with their pets. His beloved English bulldog, Gertrude, passed away in 2010 at the age of 12.

“I grew up with pets my whole life,” he said. “A pet becomes part of one’s family. My way of thinking is to give these pets some dignity at the time of their passing.”

The demand for pet cremations is there. The funeral home has performed up to 15 private cremations a week, he said. Most of the cremations have been for dogs and cats.

“But we’ve also had cremations for ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and reptiles,” Moss said.

The funeral home started offering the service shortly after opening its own crematory last year. The pet cremations are done in a separate machine than the one used for humans, he said.

A growing number of people are memorializing their pets through pet cremation,

said Robert Fells, executive director and general counsel for the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association. To meet that demand, the association formed the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance several years ago, Fells said.

“If you are a pet owner like I am, you kind of know how a person feels,” Fells said. “The sense of grief or bereavement is the same if it is a human or a pet. Grief is grief.”

Malone Funeral Home in Geneva also provides pet cremation, although it does not advertise the service.

“We can take care of whatever services people need, whether they are for pets or otherwise,” said Pam Van Treeck, Malone office manager.

“Now there seems to be more of a demand for it.”

Moss Family Paws provides services such as placement of the cremated remains into an urn, delivery or pick-up service of the cremated remains, issuance of a certificate of cremation and bereavement resources.

Although the funeral home has not been asked to perform a funeral or memorial service for a pet, Moss said he would be able to accommodate such a request.

“We obviously have the facilities and know how to have a memorial service for a pet,” he said.

The incident took place about 9:30 p.m. May 31 at the

trains when they came by. He liked doing that.”

He said it doesn’t appear that it was a case where the teen was taking a “selfie” – a self-portrait using a smartphone or similar device – near the train.

“This, I don’t think, was the case,” Acosta said. “He just liked to be close to the train. … This time, he got too close.”

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – A 68-year-old Kaneville Township man suffered from a heart condition seconds before he was involved in a fatal crash that took place in April in Blackberry Township.

According to the report from the Kane County Coroner’s Office, Burton Brown suffered from a ruptured dissecting aortic aneurysm, which – according to www. mayoclinic.org – is “a serious condition in which a tear develops in the inner layer of the

aorta.”

According to the website, “blood surges through this tear into the middle of the aorta, causing the inner and middle layers to separate (dissect). If the blood-filled channel ruptures through the outside aortic wall, aortic dissection is often fatal.”

Brown was driving in a 2002 Toyota Camry, heading east on Keslinger Road, near the intersection of Harley Road, when the crash took place about 7:30 a.m. April 28, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a Sheriff’s Office report, the driver of a white van was turning out of the MA Center entrance and was heading west on Keslinger when he observed Brown’s car “beginning to partially cross the yellow center line once or twice.” The van’s driver attempted to avoid a headon collision by swerving to the south, but he was unable to do so in time, the report stated.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the report indicated.

No tickets were issued in the crash.

Coroner’s report: Driver suffered from heart condition before crash

last week expanded the hours of their weekly drop-in sessions with youths, in hopes of providing an opportunity for friends and classmates to talk about Wolfsmith.

Acosta said some youths did come by to talk.

He said after a drop-in session on Friday night, some youths and parents gathered for a memorial near the Liberty Street crossing.

He said 15 to 20 youths

showed up.

“Whoever wanted to talk about Parker did,” Acosta said, adding participants said prayers and lighted candles.

Visitation services also took place Friday for Wolfsmith.

According to Wolfsmith’s obituary, a memorial has been established in his name.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com After more than two decades with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office – including five years as undersheriff – Dave Wagner has decided to retire, creating a ripple effect not just at the sheriff’s office, but in the upcoming election.

Wagner wrote in an email that he plans to retire in July and will enter the private sector immediately. He intends to open a private practice as a licensed polygraph examiner, he said.

“I’m at a point in my career where I feel like I’ve been blessed to have done everything I’ve wanted to do here at KCSO,” Wagner wrote, listing patrol, special operations, investigations, executive level management and the SWAT Team as examples.

“I’m going out feeling very satisfied with the initiatives and accomplishments that I

Perez, who came up through the ranks with Wagner, described him as a godsend.

“I can’t thank Dave enough,” he said.

Perez compared the role of undersheriff to that of a vice president. He said the undersheriff helps with administrative and operational responsibilities and is tasked with making decisions on the sheriff’s behalf in the sheriff’s

absence.

“It’s really a position of very high trust,” he said.

Although Perez only has a few months left in office – he is not running for re-election in November – he said he will not leave the position vacant.

“I want to make sure the organization is running on all cylinders and nothing is going on the back burner on my way out the door,” Perez said.

Lt. Pat Gengler will fill that post and will retain his duties as public information officer, Perez said. He said Gengler’s promotion will cause a ripple

effect of staffing changes within the office.

“It’s good movement,” he said.

The effects of Wagner’s retirement also reaches the sheriff’s race. Republican candidate Don Kramer announced Wagner as his pick for undersheriff in February. Kramer said he was OK with Wagner’s decision and added that it shouldn’t affect his campaign.

“It’s not going to stymie anything in the least,” he said.

Others in the sheriff’s office are capable of being undersheriff, Kramer said. He said he is in the vetting process, reviewing resumes.

Kramer will face Democrat Willie Mayes Sr. in the general election.

MAPLE PARK – Bridesand grooms-to-be searching for wedding venues have one more option: Kuipers Family Farm.

The Maple Park facility Tuesday received Kane County Board approval on zoning changes that will let the farm hold social events in an existing building.

Kim Kuipers, who owns the farm with her husband, said inquiries from customers prompted them to offer this service.

“We were getting more and more calls over the years,” she said.

She added there “doesn’t seem to be any end in sight” in the demand for unique wedding venues.

Because the buildings are dormant from January to July, hosting weddings and corporate events made sense for them, as well, Kuipers said.

The extra business also

should benefit the farm’s parttime seasonal employees, she said, explaining they express interest in any available work throughout the year.

“It’s a good way to offer more employment to them in the off-season,” Kuipers said.

The farm already has started booking its first weddings, she said.

Those wanting a fall wedding, however, will have to look elsewhere because of the farm’s activities during that season.

“We just don’t have the space right now,” Kuipers said.

In addition to hosting events, Kuipers Family Farm also got County Board approval to install a train that will be used to provide rides to visitors.

Kuipers anticipates the train will be ready for the fall 2015 season. They hope to start laying the track this summer, she said.

In a brief update to the County Board on Tuesday, Lauzen said he continues to “scrupulously” follow the ordinance that governs such hires.

He – along with board

member Monica Silva, Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers and Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven – reviewed about eight to 12 resumes last week, he said.

Silva, D-Aurora, chairs the Public Health Committee. The health department oversees Animal Control.

Of the applicants, Lauzen said, three will proceed to interviews conducted by the initial group of county representatives as well as board members Drew Frasz, R-El-

burn, and Susan Starrett, R-Batavia.

Lauzen then will make his recommendation to the full board.

“I intend to support Barb Jeffers’ selection,” he said, describing the candidates as “top notch.”

The process could be completed in the next 45 to 60 days, he said.

Animal Control has been without an administrator since May 7, when former Interim Administrator Robert Sauceda resigned amid a per-

sonnel investigation.

In other news, Fred Dresser – a representative from Fox Valley Court Watch – asked the County Board to invest in a better sound system for courtrooms at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Fox Valley Court Watch is a group of volunteers that monitors and critiques courtroom activities on behalf of crime victims, and particularly victims of domestic violence.

Dresser, who previously addressed the board in Octo-

ber, said it can be “very difficult” for the volunteers to conduct their responsibilities when they can’t hear the court proceedings.

Lauzen said after the meeting that he was glad Don Biggs, operations staff executive for the county, was in the audience to hear Dresser’s concerns.

Improving the sound quality is something he would consider, Lauzen said. He said it likely would be discussed with the other improvements needed at the judicial center.

ELBURN – The Blackberry Retention Fields in Elburn should be in playable shape by late June or early July, the Elburn Baseball and Softball organization’s president said.

The organization signed a 10-year contract with the Village of Elburn to mow and maintain the fields so their members could play games there, Ron Vohs said. The fields consist of two diamonds on the south side of Keslinger Road and west of the water tower in the Blackberry Subdivision.

“Obviously having these fields are a great asset to the organization,” Vohs said.

“It keeps our kids playing baseball and it keeps kids in town.”

State’s Attorney reacts to FOIA-related ruling

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office might take on additional duties handling open records requests as a result of an Illinois Supreme Court decision, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

The state Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Nelson v. Kendall County in May concluded that the Freedom of Information Act does apply to State’s Attorney’s Offices as part of the executive branch of state government.

It was the Kane County State’s Attorney’s position in the past that FOIA did not apply to it, McMahon said.

“We are gearing up to prepare for those requests,” McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly media meeting.

McMahon said the State’s Attorney’s Office will have to be more thorough with

its exemptions under FOIA going forward. Office employees will review requests and make any necessary redactions from documents in question.

Information that does not compromise witness safety or a pending case will be released, McMahon said.

McMahon said the State’s Attorney’s Office does receive FOIA requests on a regular basis.

He did not have available an exact number of FOIA requests received in the past year because he said the office does not track the number of requests.

Many of the FOIA requests are from correctional center inmates who have been convicted, exhausted all appeal options, and want to see what the office has on file for their specific cases, McMahon said.

Information on contracts and the office’s budget previously have been available to the public, McMahon said.

Trustees at Tuesday’s Sugar Grove Village Board meeting will vote on an ordinance that would allow packaged liquor sales between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. seven days a week. Currently, the village allows packaged liquor sales between 8 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said the request for earlier hours came from gas stations/ convenience stores in the village.

“They found on the weekends, especially in the morning, customers stopping for gas also wanted

to buy packaged liquor,” he said. “They wanted to do onestop shopping.”

Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins has not voiced any objections to the change.

The change would be in line with what surrounding communities do.

ST. CHARLES – The legacy of Tyler Caruso, a St. Charles East student who died in 2002, lives on through the 12th memorial concert held recently in Lincoln Park in St. Charles, his mother, Marilyn Caruso, said.

“We had a record crowd this year, probably 200 to 150 people,” said Marilyn Caruso, who lives in St. Charles.

“The concert is free, but we received in excess of $2,500 in contributions for scholarships. We sold concert T-shirts, bottled water and soft drinks. ... All proceeds went to benefit the memorial fund.”

Tyler Caruso died suddenly of cardiac arrest at age 17. It was caused by a virus that attacked the lining of his heart, she said.

The Tyler Brett Caruso Memorial Concert fulfills a dream the student had to unite St. Charles East and North through his passion, which was music, she said.

He played football and was an accomplished musician on

alto saxophone, she said.

“This was Tyler’s dream,” she said of the concerts held each year. “He wanted to bring a free concert to the community and celebrate the friendship between students at St. Charles East and St. Charles North after the school was split.

“He wanted to keep something, so friendships could continue when they went to different schools,” she said.

“Instead of competition and rivalry over sports, a concert in the park that would bring then all together every year.”

The schools’ musicians share the performance time and representatives from each school help with planning, she said.

“We are very excited that it continues to go on year after year,” Marilyn Caruso said. “It is always held the last weekend in May and kicks off the summer concert series in the park.”

The scholarships go to music students from each school, she said.

Obama’s student debt plan needs some creativity BLOOMBERG NEWS President Barack Obama announced steps Monday that he says will make student loans more affordable.

That may be good midterm politics, but his tinkering isn’t much help for a system of college financing that’s spinning out of control.

Obama will give more student borrowers access to income-based repayment plans, which cap monthly loan payments at 10 percent of a borrower’s income. He also urged Congress to pass a bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, that would reduce interest rates on student loans by letting borrowers refinance.

If the aim is simply to make student loans as cheap as possible, then these changes earn full points.

But how much use is that by itself? Student loans are already affordable compared with other types of credit; making them cheaper still will fuel more borrowing and leave taxpayers on the hook for more of the tab.

(Warren’s bill would cost $51 billion over 10 years, paid for by increasing taxes on high earners.) The greater concern is the share of students who default, now at 1-in-7 – its highest level in two decades.

By that light, expanding access to income-based repayment is a good idea, as far as it goes. A more efficient idea, proposed by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida earlier this

year, would automatically enroll borrowers in those plans, rather than leaving students to wade through the details on their own.

Otherwise, the students who most need those programs may not be the ones who know enough to sign up for them.

Another idea worth pursuing is effectively removing the possibility of default altogether, by having a borrower’s employer automatically deduct those income-based repayments from borrowers’ paychecks and send the money to the Internal Revenue Service.

That’s what Republican Rep. Tom Petri of Wisconsin has proposed, modeled on systems in Britain and elsewhere.

Both automatic enrollment and payroll deductions would need to be approached carefully. It’s important that borrowers retain the chance to pay back their loans faster without penalty (and so pay less on interest over time).

And the IRS would need the necessary technology and personnel to make sure it could handle the task of calculating and processing the required payments.

Still, the spiraling mess of U.S. higher-education funding can’t be addressed through cheaper money alone. The administration is right to focus on reducing default rates; it could stand to be a little more creative in how it does so. The Republicans’ proposals are a good place to start.

St. Charles East’s Jordan Shead earned 2 relay championships

J

ordan Shead anchored two championship relays at the Class 3A girls track and field state meet last month, winning each by fractions of a second yet hardly leaving doubt.

In what has become a rite of St. Charles East springs, Shead stormed down the frontstretch to help the Saints capture the 4x800 meters and 4x400 en route to the first team trophy in program history after a third-place finish.

A whirlwind season filled with shuffling and lineup permutations ended with the Saints climbing the podium at Eastern Illinois, eager to exhale. All the better for Shead. Along with runners, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year battles sinus troubles stride-for-stride, too.

“You are just really fussing and tired and you want to sleep all the time,” Shead said. “You get headaches and a lot of facial pressure and really bad sore throat, and yeah …”

Consider that the lone cringe-worthy attribute of Shead’s performance as a senior. Also consider it history, as she is set to undergo surgery to clear her sinuses Friday.

With her upcoming recovery in mind, Shead took to occasional running and biking over the past few days while visiting family in North Carolina.

“Just trying to maintain what I have so it’s not totally all gone,” Shead said.

Bed rest aside, Shead aims to be as sharp as possible as she prepares for a college career at Notre Dame. Shead committed to the school in January – choosing the Irish over Dayton, Loyola and Wisconsin – on the heels of a breakthrough junior season in which she took fourth in

While she matched the fourth-place finish in the 400 as a senior, her development in the 800 diversified Shead’s skill set while boosting the Saints’ medal hopes.

Following coach Tim Wolf’s philosophy to “train outside the box,” she made her 4x800 debut at the 2013 Kane County Meet as the Saints finished in a county-record 9:20.13. An encouraging split and newfound adrenaline in running middle distance inspired Shead in the offseason.

“She’s obviously really talented and she’s really fast,” said junior Torree Scull, the lead leg of the 4x800, “so once she started the 800, she was really good at it.”

Adding the 4x800 and/ or 800 to her repertoire also built Shead’s endurance for the 400 later in meets. The extra workload did not affect

her stamina or sinuses much.

Shead tried not to think about them, but also knew staying active would help keep any potential problems at bay.

The quartet of Scull, sophomore Anastasia Honea, senior Corrin Adams and Shead competed together for the first time in the state prelims.

The 4x400 was a different story, as junior twin sisters Allison and Elizabeth Chmelik returned with Shead from last season’s winning relay.

Freshman Casey McNichols filled the spot left by Britney Williams’ graduation.

Shead, a Saints captain, gladly assumed Williams’ leadership void, a role made more difficult by the team’s nearly season-long spate of illnesses and injuries.

In the week ahead of the county meet, Wolf said 26 athletes missed at least one practice.

“I think I was ready to step up and stuff,” Shead said. “As

a captain, I knew that comes with a lot of responsibility.

I at least tried to make the younger kids feel comfortable, because there’s always lots of nerves. So I’d try to lead by example.”

Scull noticed that subtle style in Shead – admittedly “not an extremely loud, echoing person” – upon entering the program.

“She wasn’t ever the runner that was so competitive that you came across as mean,” Scull said. “She was always lighthearted and really friendly, so she was alot of fun to run with.”

Shead looks forward to keeping the momentum going at Notre Dame, and is certain her time at East will provide fuel.

“It was a really amazing experience, the end of my senior year,” Shead said. “I was just really proud of the whole team and how we were able to get a trophy.”

For St. Charles resident Jen Lidel, the RBC Decathlon is more than just an athletic event. It’s a mission to support those affected by cancer, a narrative she’s all-too-familiar with.

As an operations manager at a TradeLink Securities branch in Chicago, Lidel, along with hundreds of other men and women working in the financial services industry, will be participating in the decathlon, a multi-event athletic competition, at St. John’s University in New York on June 22, benefiting the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the world’s oldest largest and private cancer center, according to its official website.

Lidel is accustomed to the high-stress responsibilities a person working on Wall Street has, and the decathlon provides a constructive outlet.

“It’s really rewarding knowing children and their families will benefit, just from hyper-competitive Wall Street people who want to raise money and compete with each other,” she said.

In 2006, Lidel was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after undergoing a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, she has been cancer-free since. With the help of a healthy diet and exercise, Lidel is preparing to individually represent her firm, and compete in all 10 athletic events the decathlon offers; ranging from events focusing on cardiovascular endurance to arm strength.

“I’ve never really done one of these events and felt like it was anything but just for me,” she said, recalling a recent email to her from decathlon organizers explaining cancer survivors will be coming to the event and thanking those participating. “This isn’t about me anymore … this isn’t about challenging myself. Now, it’s about the people behind us changing lives.”

Lidel is no stranger to rigorous athletic events, having competed in various 5Ks and other races, but she was looking for further challenges, and found the decathlon online last August.

The St. Charles East girls soccer team heads to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium at North Central College on Friday to meet Lincoln-Way North in the IHSA Class 3A state soccer semifinals in Naperville.

The Saints defeated the Phoenix, 3-1, behind second-half goals from Amanda Hilton, Anna Corirossi and Shannon Rasmussen to advance to Saturday’s championship match against one-loss New Trier. While the Saints attacked and pressed the Trevians, they ultimately lost, 1-0. Coach Paul Jennison’s club ended the season 19-5-5. The second-place finish marked the Saints’ first state trophy since St. Charles High won a state title in 2000.

“We’re going to a stronger conference across the board,” Chivari said. “We’re hoping that student-athletes that are serious about academics as well as sports will see they can get a good education as well as great competition athletically at Marmion.”

Stanko heading north of border: St. Charles North graduate Justin Stanko is switching schools and picking up another college sport.

Stanko is leaving Loyola, where he played soccer as a freshman, and will transfer to Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he will play both soccer and basketball.

“At Whitewater winning a national title is always the goal and with Justin we just got a step closer,” Whitewater men’s soccer coach Tony Guinn said in a news release.

Whitewater’s men’s basketball program, meanwhile, is coming off a Division-III men’s basketball national championship season after the Warhawks beat Williams College on a last-second basket to win the title.

A 6-foot-6 forward in basketball and defender in soccer, Stanko excelled in both sports during his high school career with the North Stars.

More from the transfer front: St. Francis girls soccer products Taylor Bucaro and Jenna DiTusa are both transferring from Bowling Green, according to Spartans coach Jim Winslow.

Winslow said Bucaro will continue her college career at Purdue while DiTusa, a

goalkeeper, will remain in the state of Ohio and play at Dayton.

Faulhaber honored: Recent Batavia girls volleyball graduate Audrey Faulhaber was chosen among thousands of applicants as a winner of the Amateur Athletic Union Sullivan Award, which comes with a $10,000 scholarship and a free trip to Disney World.

“Audrey has been an outstanding volleyball player in our program as well as an excellent student,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne wrote in an email. “She is also extremely active in community service, not only with involving and organizing our volleyball program members, but also on

her own. One of the projects she did start by involving the volleyball program is an event called Athletes Against Hunger. She created the event last summer. As a program and with our younger summer campers, we collected over 1,200 items for the Batavia Food Pantry from the community. She is expanding it this year to involve tennis and soccer as well.”

Faulhaber will be a freshman volleyball player next year at St. Olaf (Minn.).

Marmion and St. Francis are already headed to the Chicago Catholic League for football and soccer in the fall, and it appears to be a matter of time before the CCL becomes their home for all sports.

Marmion athletic director Joe Chivari is optimistic that will be the case, though Marmion, St. Francis and Montini are still awaiting official acceptance as full members for 2015-16.

“Everything is fine,” Chivari said. “I don’t worry about our acceptance in it. It’s moving at a pace I’m comfortable with. As long as I can get into their postseason tournaments [for next year], I’m good with what’s going on.”

Aurora Christian is expected to also play football in the CCL but take its other sports to the Northeastern Athletic Conference once the SCC disbands in the aftermath of a big chunk of the conference leaving for the Metro Suburban Conference and Marian Central heading for the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

The CCL is only for boys sports so Rosary and St. Francis are among the schools that will play girls sports in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference in 2015-16.

Retired math teacher will be only American referee in World Cup

By TIMOTHY D. MAY Special to the Washington Post It was 2:24 a.m. on a Tuesday in January when the email from Zurich softly chimed into Mark Geiger’s phone. A former high school math teacher, Geiger is one of only nine salaried full-time professional soccer referees handling Major League Soccer matches, but the email was by far the most important of his officiating career.

The message from FIFA, soccer’s international governing body, said he had been picked among 25 elite referees from around the globe to officiate at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which begins Thursday.

Geiger, 39, will be the only American tasked with overseeing games on the grass at the world’s biggest single-event sporting competition. No American referee has been invited to work as a “center,” or primary, ref at a World Cup since 2002.

“He’s one who feels he’s always right about everything, and he usually is,” said his brother, Steven Geiger. Other pro referees said he is good enough to become the first American official to make it out of the World Cup group stages as a center referee.

“I don’t think he’ll be making any mistakes,” said Michael Kennedy, a former FIFA-listed referee whose job at the New York-based Professional Referee Organization includes monitoring Mark Geiger’s performances in the MLS, where Geiger has officiated for 11 seasons. “At the end of the day, he’s got that mentality and toughness and fitness to get in there, stay close to play and find the right angle to get it right.”

He has been selected once by FIFA for an international final – the 2011 Under-20 World Cup championship match in Bogota, Colombia, between Brazil and Portugal, won by Brazil in extra time.

“Fate and opportunity and preparation have paved the way for him to shine at this tournament,” said Joe Romayo, a soccer-loving former math student of Geiger’s who now teaches history in New Jersey. “He’s got a chance to be the Howard Webb of the 2014 World Cup.” Webb is a prominent referee in England’s Premier League who also handled the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.

Geiger doesn’t know about that. Too many variables, even for a recently retired Advanced Placement math teacher. But after waking up that January morning and reading the email from FIFA, he knew one thing.

“Whether you’re from Italy or Spain or the U.S.,” he said, “to get the next game, you have to earn it.”

••• Geiger’s path to Brazil began in his home town of Beachwood, N.J., when he

was 13 and needed some pocket money. Geiger started doing rec-league games on weekends, and still remembers his first game, when he incorrectly awarded a pair of goals he should have disallowed as offside.

“The assistant referee had his flag up for quite a long time” both times, Geiger said he was later told. “I remember completely ignoring my linesman and having to call back those two goals.”

Geiger continued learning as a part-time referee in high school and then as a student at Trenton State College, where he earned a teaching degree. He played soccer as a kid, sticking with it until high school, when he joined the track team.

As for math, Geiger said, “I was just good at it.” He was good at teaching, too. Before leaving his whiteboard behind last February to focus on his referee career, Geiger was chosen in 2009 for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. He received the award at the White House, where he shook President Barack Obama’s hand before returning to Beachwood, where he continues to live.

Geiger obtained his National Referee badge in 2003 while still employed at Lacey Township High School in Ocean County, New Jersey.

He began refereeing MLS games a year later, part time.

In 2008, Geiger was added to U.S. Soccer’s International Panel of Referees, making him eligible for higher-profile international matches and requiring more travel. Offered a full-time, salaried position with the Professional Referee Organization last year, he

Your 2010-11 NBA Coach of the Year award is so yesterday.

Then there are the big, lucky boys – the Spurs Greg Popovich and the Heat’s Eric Spoelstra, precisely – obviously fine coaches, but nevertheless very fortunate fellows, too, berry pickers who tripped over the verdant raspberry patch.

Between those two Finals coaches they likely have seven or eight Hall of Fame players, starting with Tim Duncan and LeBron James and drifting down to Manu Ginobili and Ray Allen.

Regardless of team talent, Thibiodeau is a wanted coach. Although he has never won a championship as a head coach, he is so respected that he has been selected as an assistant for head coach Mike Krzyzewski for the U.S. men’s national team.

Coach Krzyzewski is a walking hoops god, we all know, but he’s a college coach, and – guess what? – he makes more than twice as much as Thibs.

Back in April 2013, Thibodeau signed a four-year $17.5 contract extension with the Bulls, taking him through 2016-17. That, you might think, would be the end of it.

Probably is. But coaches can get fidgety, can become burdens to their parent team, can have lawyers work out ways to buy out contracts, move on, etc.

Even Kobe Bryant has said he’d like Thibodeau to

be his coach, to take over the dysfunctional-family Lakers.

Whether a wish by a fading superstar like Bryant, who will turn 36 this summer, is even worth processing, who knows.

But the idea of being in demand is a concept that won’t go away.

Thibs and his defense-first, all-for-one, nothing-exists-in-my-world-buthoops intensity is a desired commodity.

The Nets took fresh-offthe-court Jason Kidd last year and made him their head coach, and the result wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad, either.

Kidd signed for $10.5 million for four years, with three years and $7.5 million guaranteed, and he’ll likely renegotiate upward sometime soon.

You can see how the coaching inflation has launched just since 2013.

Indeed, there are several coaches making $6 million to $7 million a year in the NBA. And rich-man college coach John Calipari just turned down a seven-year $60-million to be president, coach and chief Humpty-Dumpty of the woeful Cavaliers.

To give you and idea of the leverage here, consider that Calipari took $52.5 million from the University of Kentucky, for seven years, loaded with bonuses that will earn him millions more.

If there’s a glitch in Thibs’ wagon, it’s that he’s so intense, he sometimes burns a hole right through his team. “Thibodeau is a great coach, former Bull and current Spur Marco Bellinelli said the other day. “But maybe Pop is more like a cool guy. He wants to speak with you, have a conversation…not just about basketball.”

Well, focus is focus.

We’ll see if Thibs keeps his in Chicago.

Geiger’s two assistant referees, Sean Hurd of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joe Fletcher, a Canadian, will accompany him in Brazil.

The three have worked and traveled together for three years, forming a tight professional bond.

In a statement, FIFA said it based its decision on Geiger and the other World Cup referees “on their personality and their quality in football understanding by being able to read the game and the teams’ tactical approaches towards each game.” (Geiger and his assistants will only be eligible to officiate games outside the U.S. team’s group, which includes second-ranked Germany and fourth-ranked Portugal, as well as Ghana.)

When pressed about it though, Geiger said teaching math probably helped him make the final cut.

••• If mathematics are about quantity, structure, space and change, so too are the dynamics on the soccer pitch, Geiger explained.

Maintaining order and clarity in a classroom of gifted, confident students is not so different than fairly governing the lightening-fast interplay of 22 of the world’s most sublimely talented and craftiest soccer players.

“When I was in the classroom, it was 25 or 30 students each with a different learning style,” Geiger said.

“On the soccer field you have 22 different players, each with different personalities. So it’s about recognizing what’s going to work with a particular player and then implementing that.”

He added: “The situations that are in the grey areas, preventing players from taking that next step, communicating with them, managing them, working with them” is what a good

Derek Fisher is the new coach of the Knicks, and his boss is Big Chief Triangle, Phil Jackson, the former beloved leader of the Bulls.

Fine. Good for New York.

Zen out.

Forget that Fisher, who has played basketball since the peach basket was invented, but has never coached a team in his life, will be getting $25 million for five years.

And forget that Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, generally considered one of the three or four best coaches in the NBA, makes $4 million a year.

Forget, too, that Jackson, whose ailing body prevents him from being the Knicks coach because of the travel duties, was rejected by his former 3-point shooter, Steve Kerr, who signed on as the head coach for the Warriors in mid-May, for… $25 million for five years.

Sense a trend?

Kerr, too, for all his likeability and basketball knowledge, is the same as Fisher – never coached a game in his life.

Maybe none of this maters for the Bulls. But I think it does.

They are in a sort of no-man’s land – waiting, as always, on Derrick Rose’s knee, while fretting about the free agents (read: Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Love) they may or may not snag this summer.

The entire team has been refashioned since the start of last season, when Rose went down again and Luol Deng was traded to Cleveland. Suddenly, everything revolved around center Joakim Noah, a goofball turned solid leader, a shocking first-team All NBA selection.

Thibodeau did more with less, did a coaching pirouette, in fact, and remade the Bulls on the fly into a playoff team.

One of seven FIFA-listed center referees from the United States, over the past six years Geiger has traveled in Europe, Africa, Central and South America to oversee international matches.

Along with the two Olympics games in 2012, the four matches he handled during the U-20 World Cup finals in Colombia, which culminated in his officiating the championship game, remain his most memorable.

The U-20 final also marked the first time an American official refereed a major FIFA men’s tournament championship.

Last year, in what may have been his final exam by FIFA, Geiger and his team went to Morocco for FIFA’s Club World Cup, won by German juggernaut Bayern Munich. Geiger and his team handled the fifth-place match between an Egyptian and a Mexican club, and Geiger later served as the fourth official at the championship game. He and his assistants also handled four World Cup qualifiers.

So far, his biggest matches have been devoid of controversy or drama.

“It’s a statement that he’s doing great work and plying his trade in a professional manner,” said Kennedy, the referees manager at the Professional Referee Organization. “He’s confident, consistent, and constantly learning and wanting to do the best he can.”

Geiger, whose widow’s peak and dark eyes create an owlish, mildly sinister impression that comes in handy during games, shrugs off questions about whether he’ll come in for extra criticism or scrutiny at the World Cup because he is American, representing a country still struggling for the respect of the soccer-loving world.

“I hope they just look at us as referees, and that we all went through the same process to get there, and that we’re treated with respect,” Geiger said.

‘Bicycling With Moliere’: A buddy comedy on its surface

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post From Laurel and Hardy to Felix Unger and Jack Klugman to the ladies of “The Heat,” the odd couple formula has generated untold hours of entertainment. You can add Gauthier and Serge to the list; they’re the main characters in Philippe Le Guay’s delightful “Bicycling With Moliere,” which is both about Moliere’s play “The Misanthrope” and a loose adaptation of the satire.

Expertly coiffed and Frenchly scarfed, Gauthier Valance (Lambert Wilson) looks like the type of man who usually gets what he wants. As the star of the fictitious hit television show about a MacGyver-like surgeon, “Dr. Morange,” he’s the Gallic equivalent of Mark Harmon from “NCIS.” Everyone’s mother loves him. Unfortunately for Gauthier, Serge (Fabrice Luchini) is no one’s mother.

The retired actor has exiled himself to the windy and soggy Isle of Re. Gauthier travels there, hoping to convince Serge to play Philinte in a stage adaptation of “The Misanthrope.”

At first Serge flat-out refuses, and then he waffles, clearly coveting the starring role of Alceste, which Gauthier has reserved for himself. So, the two strike a deal. Serge tells Gauthier to stay on the island for a few days so they can rehearse together, alternating roles. If it seems like they might create Moliere magic, Serge will take a break from retirement. If not, Gauthier can return to the big city and Serge will get back to painting female nudes while living in his dilapidated manse with a malfunctioning septic system.

Luchini and Wilson are fantastic in their roles, creating a rapport that’s pleasingly argumentative but (almost) never mean. They randomly launch into dialogue from the play the way a polyglot might slip in and out of various languages, sometimes while riding bikes around the island (hence the title).

At first it seems as if Serge is a no-brainer for the title character, given his mercurial personality and singular moral code. Gauthier, seemingly harmless, also appears

But as the movie progresses, it becomes clear that both men exhibit elements of both characters. Serge may push people away, but he’s always sad to see them go.

And beneath Gauthier’s accommodating exterior lies a bit of volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, a parade of pleasant characters drift in and out of the two men’s lives, from an opinionated recent divorcee to an aspiring porn star looking for acting tips. And while there are some farcical moments, there’s also a naturalism to the proceedings.

At one point, Gauthier punches someone and immediately grabs his hand in agony, which is both realistic and funny.

It’s after this demoralizing incident that Gauthier returns to a particularly poignant moment in the play and delivers the scene in a completely new way. Since the characters rehearse the same lines over and over, the audience gets to see how the meaning changes based on what the men have recently experienced.

Mediterranean diet is a healthy way to go Dear Doctor K: I want to go on a diet and am trying to decide between low-fat, low-carb and Mediterranean. What do you think?

Dear Reader: Your first two options – low-fat and low-carb – are too simple. There are “good” fats and “bad” fats, and “good” carbs and “bad” carbs. You don’t want a diet that is low in good fats or good carbs. You want a diet that is low in bad fats and bad carbs.

A good diet should provide plenty of choices and few restrictions. It should be as good for your heart, bones, brain and colon as for your waistline. And it should be something you can sustain for years.

• Low-fat. Fat contains nine calories per gram while carbohydrates contain four. Therefore, a low-fat diet might make it easier to keep your daily calorie count down. Calories, and the unhealthy weight gain they can trigger, are definitely something you want to control. But just controlling your calories doesn’t guarantee your diet is healthy. They have to be the right calories.

There are three problems with low-fat diets. The first is that you don’t take in enough good fats.

The second is that low-fat diets tend to be less filling and flavorful than other diets, and this lessens

Third, low-fat diets turn out to be high-carb diets. You substitute carbs for the fats you’ve chosen not to eat. Unfortunately, many people who put themselves on a low-fat diet consume not just more carbs but more bad carbs.

These highly processed carbs, such as white bread and white rice, are rapidly digested, causing more hunger – and higher blood sugar levels. Instead, choose good carbs – whole-grain, fiber-rich carbs.

• Low-carb. People on low-carb (high-protein and fat) diets do often consume fewer calories, resulting in weight loss. But most people cannot sustain a low-carb diet. If you choose a low-carb diet, select one that allows you to eat nutritious (but carb-rich) fruits and vegetables.

Which brings me to what I regard as the winner: the Mediterranean diet. I’ll bet that doesn’t surprise a regular reader of this

column.

• Mediterranean style. These diets contain moderate amounts of healthy fats, most of them from olive and canola oils, fish and nuts. The carbs in this diet come from unrefined, fiber-rich wholewheat and beans. Mediterranean diets are also rich in fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish, with only modest amounts of meat and cheese. The Mediterranean-style diet has been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and of premature death.

If you find diets too restrictive, follow these five principles of healthy eating. They can help you improve your health and lose weight along the way: 1. Cut down on refined carbs.

2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

3. Increase plant oils and fish in your diet.

4. Eat only moderate amounts of low-fat dairy products and nuts.

5. Limit portion size and total calories.

Teen worries college will be extension of high school Dr. Wallace: I’m just finishing my junior year in high school. I get good grades and will be attending Indiana University after graduation.

My problem is that I don’t enjoy being a high school student. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike my high school; it’s just that being in school doesn’t give me a thrill.

I know I’ll be going to IU because my high school grades are good and my parents expect me to be a college graduate. Both of my parents graduated from IU. My concern now is that I’m not quite sure what to expect when I start at the university. Are colleges and universities simply an extension of high school or is there a difference?

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, said, “A leader or a man of action in a crisis almost always acts subconsciously and then thinks of the reasons for his action.”

Some bridge experts are like that, playing almost by instinct.

Others grind it out, calculating the correct actions. The less capable tend to react almost subconsciously, making the “natural” play without time for analysis. It would be a great idea for almost everyone to slow down.

In this deal, for example, look at the North and East hands.

Against four spades, West leads the club queen. How should East plan the defense?

West was aggressive in raising to two clubs, but he had a singleton and liked the favorable vulnerability. North’s three-club advance was a modern cue-bid raise. It guaranteed at least three-card spade support and a minimum of game-invitational values. South had sufficient highcard power to jump to game.

The defenders need four tricks. East can anticipate two clubs and one spade, but where is the other winner?

That singleton diamond should be smiling at East. But it is probably pointless discouraging clubs at trick one. West would surely shift to his heart 10.

Instead, East should take control.

He should overtake the club queen with his king and switch to his singleton. Then he can take the first or second round of trumps, lead a low club to put his partner back on play, and receive the lethal diamond ruff.

It is an excellent idea to pause at trick one. Just tell declarer that you want to analyze the deal.

LONG WALK FOR A GOOD CAUSE Elburn men plan fundraiser to benefit Harter Middle School jazz band KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Bob Cates said he never has been camping in his life, except when he was in the Cub Scouts, and “that doesn’t count.”

Cates, 45, is about to get plenty of experience in roughing it. Cates will be joining a group, including Chris Goddard, Ben Westfall, Garrett Patterson and David Mannia, that will be participating in something called The BIG WALK. The men will walk from a lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan to the coast of Lake Superior, a 70-mile hike to raise funds for the Kaneland Harter Middle School jazz band. The walk will begin June 29, and will last five days. They will hike through Hiawatha National Forest, stopping to camp at night. So far, Westfall said, the group has collected about $100, but he said the hope is to collect at least $1,000.
