Folks on Spokes bike ride event targets those in Elburn KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Ben Westfall said when he thinks of the benefits of living and working in Elburn, a big plus is the ability to get around without a car.

Westfall, the treasurer of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, has announced a new chamber event for this summer – Folks on Spokes, a bike ride that includes a route beginning at Blackberry Creek Elementary School and ending at John Stewart Elementary School.

The event is set for Aug. 16. Registration starts Monday. The cost will be $15 in advance for a single rider, or $20 on the day of the event. For a group of four, the discounted cost will be $30 in advance and $40 on the day of the event. Registration will be available online at www.elburn.com.

Westfall said funds raised will benefit the parent teacher organizations at the schools and also will pay to install a bike rack in the village’s downtown area.

“I think, hopefully, people can do this and realize that we live in a town where

you can easily ride your bike from place to place,” Westfall said. “You could go to the grocery store or go out to eat. You could go to the library, go to school, go to music lessons.”

Westfall, the co-owner of Da Capo Music Studio, has advocated for an active lifestyle. Last year, he was part of a group that went on a 70-mile hike to raise funds

The event will offer rides of varying lengths. Westfall said the longest ride – between the elementary schools – will offer “a little tour of Elburn.” He said he is hoping students and their families will be enthused about the event and that the schools’ PTOs can help spread the word.

“Any time you go on some sort of long ride or adventure, to have a neat starting and ending place to get you excited for what you’re doing makes it a lot more fun,” Westfall said.

Search for escaped Youth Center inmate continues

At about 10 p.m. Monday, an escape occurred at the medium-security facility in St. Charles, said Mike TheoDenzell dore, spokesWalker person for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, authorities still were searching for Denzell Walker, 19, described as an African-American male, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 140 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and wearing a blue jumpsuit.

for pending burglary charges, Theodore said. He said he didn’t know when the last time someone escaped from the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles was.

A news release urged the public to exercise caution and contact law enforcement im-

mediately with any information by calling 911.

“While the details of the escape are still under investigation, the department is working closely with local law enforcement to conduct an extensive search of the area,” the release stated.

Debate continues on proposed Batavia pedestrian crossing Resident wants aldermen to reconsider rejection of crossing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Resident Stephen Newman wants Batavia aldermen to reconsider their decision to not install a pedestrian crossing with a raised concrete median at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31).

Aldermen at last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting voted, 8-4, against installing a pedestrian crossing at the intersection. That recommendation will now go to the full Batavia City Council on Monday.

Newman implored aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting to reconsider their decision.

“With the knowledge of a future pedestrian crossing

at Houston Street, the City Council approved $3 million to improve Houston Street and draw more people to downtown businesses, festivals and events, making the crossing at Houston Street not just a part of the pedestrian crossing project, but arguably the centerpiece,” said resident Stephen Newman, in addressing aldermen.

Stan Oke, the owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station – at the southwest corner of the intersection – told aldermen the proposed concrete median would significantly hurt his business. Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira also voiced concerns putting a crosswalk at the intersection would make it more dangerous.

er have pedestrians and bicyclists cross at the signalized intersection at Wilson Street and Route 31, just south of Houston Street and Batavia Avenue.

Newman said the Federal Highway Administration has found pedestrian crossings with a raised median have increased safety and significantly reduced auto accidents.

“When making a decision regarding the safety of Batavia’s citizenry most City Council members chose to go with their feeling and individual opinions, that provided no facts or data to support the position that a raised median would somehow make the crossing less safe,” Newman said.

COVER STORY FEMALE FIREFIGHTERS NO LONGER UNCOMMON Elburn fire department has several women in the role

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Katie Webster, a firefighter/paramedic for the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, said her mother isn’t thrilled about what she does for a living.

“She doesn’t like it,” Webster said. “She thinks it is dangerous.”

Female firefighters have become more common. According to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association, the number of female firefighters in the United States has grown from 1,700 in 1983 to 10,000 in 2012.

Webster, 27, is one of several female firefighters in the Elburn department. She was hired as a full-time firefighter in January after previously working part-time for two other fire departments.

Webster recently went on maternity leave, but she said she plans to return to the job she loves once she is ready.

She noted being a firefighter is a very physical job, but one she wouldn’t trade for anything. Her husband, Brian,

also is a firefighter.

“It is very rewarding,” Webster said. “I like that you never do the same thing every day. You are always getting to do something new.”

In training to become a firefighter, Webster said she had to go through the same physical tests as her male counterparts, which she said is the way it should be.

“I think that is good,” Webster said. “You need to do a really good job. I don’t like girls who play the girl card.”

Nichole Callaghan, 21, represents the second-generation of Callaghans to be a firefighter. Her dad, Keith Callaghan, also is a firefighter at the Elburn department, and her uncle, Kelly Callaghan, is the department’s fire chief.

She started with the department as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in 2013 after previously working as a volunteer at the Kaneville Fire Department.

“It’s really rewarding,” Kelly Callaghan said. “You get to help people on their worst day, and you give back to the community.”

Sheri Nielsen is one of two female lieutenants at the Elburn department. She also is the department’s emergency management services coordinator. Nielsen has worked her way up the ranks after starting with the department in 1988.

“It was just something I think I was meant to do,” she said.

She became a lieutenant in the early 1990s. Nielsen said she thinks the fact the department has several female firefighters creates a more welcoming environment to other women thinking of joining the department.

“The job is predominately a male-dominated field, and as a female, you want to go where you are going to be comfortable,” Nielsen said. “Not to say that you wouldn’t be comfortable going to an all-male place, but I think it helps to have another female or females so that

you can bounce ideas off of each other, or talk about ways to do things. Sometimes, we have to do things differently than the men do.”

Because firefighting still is predominately a male-dominated field, Nielsen said female firefighters can face additional challenges, such as proving they are up to the task of the job.

“We’re fortunate to work here and have a chief who knows that a female can do as a good of a job as a male,” she said.

The St. Charles Fire Department has two full-time female paramedics. In the past, the department has had female paid-on-call firefighters. The Batavia Fire Department has three female firefighters and the Geneva Fire Department has two female firefighters.

Olson said the female firefighters who have worked for the department over the years have done an outstanding job.

Hastert is charged with trying to mask more than $950,000 in withdrawals from various accounts in violation of federal banking laws that require the disclosure of large cash transactions, and with lying to federal investigators. But it is the alleged purpose of his cash withdrawals that has generated the most shock. According to the indictment, Hastert agreed to pay an unnamed person $3.5 million “to compensate for and conceal his prior misconduct” against that person.

A federal law enforcement official familiar with the investigation has told The Washington Post that the misconduct involved the alleged sexual molestation of a male student.

The indictment identifies the person only as a resident

of Yorkville, where Hastert worked as a high school teacher, Boy Scout leader and wrestling coach from 1965 until 1981 – and as someone who has known Hastert for “most of [his] life.”

During the hearing, Durkin did not question Hastert about the substance of the charges against him. Instead, the judge asked the former speaker whether he understood the indictment and went over the conditions of his release.

Most of the hearing pertained to a long disclosure that Durkin – the judge – made about his various connections to Hastert. He described a pair of campaign donations he made to Hastert more than a decade ago and a period in which he worked with Hastert’s son, Ethan, while a lawyer in private practice.

“I have no doubt I can be impartial in this matter,” Durkin said, adding he had never met Hastert.

But he acknowledged the potential appearance of a conflict of interest created grounds

for disqualification. Durkin gave Hastert and prosecutors until Thursday to review his disclosures and determine whether to waive his offer to step aside. If either party declines, the case will be randomly assigned to another federal judge in Chicago.

“I don’t want this issue to linger,” Durkin said. “I will not be offended whatever the result, I assure you.”

Hastert relinquished his passport Tuesday and agreed to remove firearms from his property in Plano.

Hastert entered the courtroom about 15 minutes before the hearing. He consulted with his attorneys briefly but mostly sat quietly, his face resting on his curled fingers. After the hearing, neither Hastert nor his attorneys made any comment as they left the building, getting into a chauffeured SUV on Dearborn Street.

CHICAGO – Former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert – stooped, silent and trailed by cameras – pleaded not guilty in federal court Tuesday, responding to felony charges related to alleged hush-money payments made to hide what law enforcement said is an embarrassing secret dating back decades.

Hastert’s arraignment, his first public appearance since his indictment, lasted less than 20 minutes. He barely spoke, and did so softly when he was questioned about the charges against him. He did not even say “not guilty” – those words were uttered by Hastert’s attorney.

“Yes” and “Yes, sir,” Hastert said to U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin, who released him on a $4,500 bond. Hastert and his attorneys remained silent afterward as they rushed past reporters into a waiting Lincoln.

Tuesday’s much-anticipat-

ed hearing did little to answer the larger questions that have captivated Hastert’s neighbors in Illinois and his former House colleagues in Washington since the May 28 indictment.

Who was Hastert allegedly seeking to keep quiet, and why? What could he have done that was worth $3.5 J. Dennis million to conHastert ceal? And did Hastert, a former teacher, Scout leader and wrestling coach, abuse those positions of trust?

City suspends electric program for ComEd rates

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The village of Elburn this month has suspended its municipal aggregation program because ComEd’s latest annual rate will save residents more money, according to a news release.

Although the actual ComEd rate varies monthly, its latest annual rate effective this month is projected at 7.13 cents per kilowatt hour, the news release states.

The village had a 7.32cent fixed rate contracted with FirstEnergy Solutions.

Elburn residents automatically will be moved back to ComEd at no charge, and they should expect to see the lower rate on their August billing, according to the release.

This is not the first time the municipal aggregation program has been suspended in Elburn, Village Administrator Erin Willrett wrote in an email on Tuesday.

The village will monitor the power market to determine if lower rates can be achieved in the future.

If a lower rate can be negotiated at another time,

village officials will inform residents of the updated rates before their implementation, the release states.

Individual households in Elburn can opt to stay with ComEd even if the village returns to the municipal aggregation program, Willrett wrote in the email.

Suppliers for village programs only contact residents by mail – there are no door-to-door solicitations or phone calls initiated by village aggregation suppliers, according to the release.

Unlike the village aggregation suppliers, residents might be contacted by other electric suppliers at their door or via phone calls because of the village’s current aggregation program suspension.

Residents should not reveal their ComEd account number to solicitors, unless they have decided to move to that specific supplier, the release states.

The village’s aggregation program has lowered the average Elburn resident home electric bill by $650 and has resulted in savings of more than $1 million throughout the village since the program began in fall 2011, according to the release.

Fox Valley Park District executive director to step down

McCaul, the district’s first female executive director in its 68-year history, has served in the position since 2010, according to a news release from the Fox Valley Park District. The

district serves Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery.

She previously worked as the district’s director of finance and administration for five years.

“This was Nancy McCaul a difficult decision because the Fox Valley Park District has been such a warm and welcoming place to work,” McCaul stated in the release. “I have enjoyed working with the board members, staff and others who have served as mentors to me during my career. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family

and exploring new hobbies.”

‘He certainly was a key player’ Former Batavia Alderman Jim Hanson dies at 89

BY ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia Alderman Jim Hanson is being remembered for his contributions to the city.

“He certainly was a key player in some of the more positive things that happened i n B a t a - Jim Hanson via,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

Hanson, of Batavia, died Thursday. He was 89.

Hanson served as a Batavia alderman for 16 years and served three terms as the Kane County regional school superintendent.

Hanson was honored by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 2013.

He is among 14 people who will be inducted in September into Batavia School District 101’s new Hall of Honor at Batavia High School.

Hanson was valedictorian of the Batavia High School Class of 1943.

Hanson was elected as an alderman in 1961 and served as the chair of what then was known as the planning, zoning and annexation committee.

During the 16 years of his tenure, downtown Batavia Plaza came into being, and land was acquired north of Wilson Street for additional development.

Schielke said it was during Hanson’s tenure on the City Council that a lot of old factory buildings were torn down, and Hanson helped redevelop the area where Panera Bread and Walgreen’s now are located on Wilson Street.

While on the City Council, Hanson also worked on an open housing ordinance that fought discrimination and segregation to ensure fair housing.

The visitation for Hanson will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hall at Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. The funeral services immediately will follow the visitation at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Calvary Episcopal Church or the charity of one’s choice.

if it could handle something as large as a Boeing 737.

Andras said the research plane would not be used for regular flights beyond a couple of times a month.

“We are excited about having someone out here with the technology corridor,” Andras said. “For someone like that to be based

out here, it’s a feather in our area’s cap.”

The public airport is tower controlled from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but planes can land 24 hours a day. Andras said it houses about 250 planes and handles 75,000 operations a year.

Although the Boeing is the largest plane at the air-

port right now, the largest to land there was a military transport plane, Andras said.

Osterman said she talked to someone at the airport who apologized for the noise and said the big plane would be flying “infrequently.”

“I just hope that ‘infrequently’ means infrequently,” Osterman said.

SUGAR GROVE – Alice Osterman, who lives in the Prestbury subdivision near Sugar Grove, wondered what that Boeing 737 was doing parked at the Aurora Municipal Airport in Sugar Grove.

“It’s quite large for our airport,” Osterman said. “It dwarfs everything else.”

Then it flew over her house three times Friday, she said.

“It was annoyingly loud,” Osterman said. “I can’t believe we are the only people who noticed. ... Someone might have noticed the plane go over and not known it was from the airport.”

The plane is owned by Gogo Air, a company that provides in-flight Internet for airlines, company spokesman Steve Nolan said. The plane is a tenant of J.A. Air Center, which subleases several buildings at the airport.

“We provide connectivity services for planes,” Nolan said. “Many commercial aircraft in the U.S. have Wi-Fi access for planes. In order to get that stuff in the air, we need to test that stuff. We have an airplane to test our products and services.”

Nolan said the Boeing is named The Jimmy Ray, after one of the founders of Gogo.

“He came up with the concept of the technology that we use,” Nolan said.

Mutual Ground changing lives every day It is a Saturday morning, and I am here at the office getting some things done while an amazing group from Nicor Gas is here beautifying our grounds for the people we serve. I started checking my emails and find that I have received an email from the head of our Prevention Education Program. It is from a school social worker, and it reads:

Hi Rhonda – I want to tell you that two days ago a student told me that she was sexually abused from the time she was 3 to the time she was 6. She said she didn’t know it was wrong. She said that she realized what was happening when Mutual Ground came to her first-grade class to talk about safe and unsafe touches.

She went home, told her parents and they called the police.

This is not the first email like this that I have received in the four years I have been leading Mutual Ground, and I know for a fact that the organization is changing lives every day, but for some reason this one sent chills down my spine. I think it is because I was here the other night and had a conversation with the volunteer that was working with the children during our parenting program. It was graduation, and the kids were performing in a talent show for their moms.

This particular volunteer works at Linden Oaks hospi-

tal, and we were discussing the wonderful inpatient program they have. She indicated that many of the clients served there have dealt with childhood trauma like sexual or physical abuse. She also mentioned that it was a big reason she chose to volunteer at Mutual Ground.

Once home for the night, I began watching an episode of the TV show “Intervention.”

In this episode, the woman needing the intervention was a child victim of sexual abuse at the hands of a family friend. She never told anyone and was in so much pain and mental anguish. She had never dealt with the abuse because she was too afraid and ashamed to tell anyone.

This brings me back to the little girl that the social worker spoke of in her email. She is only 6 and didn’t know what

was happening to her was wrong. I began asking myself how long this little girl would have endured this abuse if we had not come to her classroom. How long would it have taken her to realize it was wrong? By that time would she be able to reach out for help? Would she come to a place like Mutual Ground for counseling? And finally, how would this abuse affect her ability to live a happy and healthy adult life if she didn’t get the help she needed?

This is just one instance in which the staff at Mutual Ground has been able to effect change. That girl’s parents are taking action; she will get help; and she may just be OK after having endured this horrible trauma.

We are changing lives at Mutual Ground daily with our two 24-hour hotlines, emer-

gency shelter, prevention and community awareness programs, court assistance, hospital ER response, case management, individual counseling and group counseling efforts.

I am so incredibly honored and proud to work at a place with so many amazing people helping the individuals affected by this terrible issue that lurks in the shadows and behind the closed doors of our community every single day.

We need smarter tests The WASHINGTON POST Complaints about public school testing have been on the rise, centered on the amount of time devoted to the assessments and preparation for them.

Concern about excessive testing that detracts from learning and distorts the school experience is understandable. But the solution is not to do away with tests; they are far too valuable in providing information on student achievement.

The answer lies in better, smarter tests; that’s why the move to streamline assessments aligned with the Common Core State Standards should be applauded.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, the consortium that developed the tests used in multiple states, including Illinois, voted last month to shave 90 minutes off

the approximate 10-hour annual tests and to shift the testing to later in the school year.

This was the first year for the tests, and while they were generally praised as a more effective measure of student learning, there were complaints about the length of time they took and disruption caused by spreading the tests over two months, one in early spring and one in late spring.

The revamped tests will take effect with the 2015-16 school year, and officials said the changes won’t diminish the ability to gauge student achievement.

The move by PARCC – using real-life experience and intelligent feedback from parents, students and educators to tweak the tests without abandoning their core function – should serve as a model in what promises to be the nation’s continued debate about testing.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

T. CHARLES – It normally takes a few years to transition from a doubles tennis player to singles.

Or, you can be St. Charles North’s Aaron Amburgey and not miss a beat.

Amburgey, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Tennis Player of the Year, made the flawless transition to No. 1 singles this season after being selected to the all-area team as a doubles player last season with the North Stars.

The senior finished 2015 with a 32-7 record as North’s No. 1 singles player and, had he played for North for his entire four years (playing his first two years in Kentucky), he might have had a shot at the total tennis wins record for the North Stars’ program.

Part of transitioning into a singles player, especially after playing doubles for your entire career, is changing the mentality in which you play with. That is a large part of why it tends to take some time to be successful.

“You have an aggressive mentality when you play doubles,” Amburgey said. “I really had to learn how to be more patient and have much more control. It took a lot of work, but it’s definitely a completely different approach. I was lucky because with the training I do, it kind of came natural to me.”

Amburgey trains at the Wheaton Sports Center during offseasons and, on most weeks, plays more than 10 hours of tennis a week.

There were a lot of things he tried to focus on to make sure he had success, with only one high school season remaining coming into this year.

18 SINGLES Aaron Amburgey St. Charles North, Sr. Amburgey, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Tennis Player of the Year, finished the season 32-7, finishing in second place at the St. Charles East Sectional, as well as earning a spot in the second day of the state tournament.

Ty Krill Wheaton Academy, Fr. As a freshman, Krill lost just two singles matches all season, the last of which was in the fifth round of the consolation bracket at the state tournament. A Geneva resident, Krill was the No. 1 singles champion at the St. Charles East Sectional.

John King Marmion, Jr. King was a force to be reckoned with for most of a dominant season, finishing with a 25-5 record. The junior also made the state tournament, making it to the second round of the consolation bracket.

DOUBLES Matt Ernst (Jr.)Luke Dunteman (Jr.) St. Charles North The junior duo finished the season with a 22-10 record, as well as booked a trip to the state tournament.

The doubles duo won a match in the consolation bracket at state.

Adam Maris (Sr.)-Andrew Nelson (Jr.) Batavia Maris could very well be considered for one of the three spots for singles, as it was where he played most of the season.

However, come state tournament time, Batavia decided to play this duo together in doubles, where they managed to win their first match.

Connor Anderson (Sr.)-Alex Winters (Jr.) St. Charles East Winters played this season with a new partner in Anderson, and the two didn’t miss a beat, winning the No. 1 doubles title at the St. Charles East Sectional.

“Certain technical things were important, as well,” Amburgey added. “I worked so much on my ground strokes as well as serving.

Like I said, it’s kind of a whole different mindset and everything is solely on you to correct, so I had to adjust to that pretty quickly, as well.”

North coach Sean Masoncup was a big part of helping Amburgey turn into the player he became, which included a second-place finish at the St. Charles East Sectional, as well as a trip to the second day of the IHSA state tournament.

Masoncup said he could not speak more highly of Am-

burgey and how far he has come as a tennis player, but more than anything, Masoncup said he had never seen a player want to be more successful in his time at North.

“His work ethic is truly second to none,” Masoncup said. “He was going to do whatever it took to get [to state]. He put in hours and hours of work, before and after practices, and was really one of the hardest-working kids this program has ever seen. He deserves this recognition, and I’m proud to be able to say I coached him.”

Aside from the actual transition, Masoncup talked of something that maybe not anyone else sees about Amburgey that makes him so special. Having been around him for the past two seasons, Masoncup has seen his standout star transition into something else as well: a more mature human being as well as a leader.

“There was that sort of silent expectation that he had of everyone to come ready to play every day. His maturity showed in his game, and it was a really fun year, led by a kid that could not be more

deserving of everything he has accomplished.”

Although the season was going to come to an end at some point, Amburgey had one goal entering the spring.

He came into the season with the opportunity to be

the first North boys tennis player to make it to Friday, the second day, of the state tournament in both doubles and singles.

He accomplished that feat and, although the thought of not playing another high school tennis match wasn’t easy to deal with, Amburgey has had time to reflect on the year he had.

“There’s so much that just makes me happy looking at it all,” Amburgey said. “The bonds we shared as a team … winning the conference over Batavia, and obviously the trip to state.”

“It’s never really something I thought was possible coming into high school,” Amburgey said of his accomplishments in both doubles and singles. “I can really say I’m proud of everything I did and to be named the player of the year is a huge accomplishment for me and kind of the icing on the cake of a group of great memories.”

‘Be loose, have fun’ is postseason theme

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Asked how she and her Kaneland softball teammates passed the 90-minute weather delay at the start of Monday’s Class 3A Rosemont 1 Supersectional, Knights third baseman Meg Cohrs grinned.

“Danced,” Cohrs said.

Well, there you go.

With lightning flashing overhead for segments of the late afternoon and evening, the Knights did the electric slide regardless of sound system accompaniment. That’s just how the team rolls, players insist. Now the upbeat bunch finds itself in the program’s first state tournament since 2000, armed with an easygoing credo.

“Be loose, have fun,” sophomore shortstop Morgan Weber said. “I mean, softball is so much more fun when you’re having fun. That’s our main quote.”

Within moments of hoisting the supersectional plaque on The Ballpark at Rosemont’s synthetic turf, Knights coach Peter Goff seemingly played along, quoting “Rocky III” and

referencing Mike Eruzione of the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team.

To be sure, Goff paid more than lip service to Kaneland’s clutch hitting and senior Angie Morrow’s dominance in a complete-game, three-hit, 10-strikeout shutout of Nazareth Academy.

Still, it was clear being all-business for too long wasn’t on his playlist, er, checklist.

As he spoke, Goff and the Knights were in the midst of yielding the first base dugout to St. Charles North, which faced Oak Park-River Forest in the Class 4A Rosemont 2 Supersectional that followed.

The North Stars had commenced reenacting their own routine, but didn’t need a stereo. Have you ever heard a softball team sing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” a cappella during a passing hailstorm?

Only in Rosemont, apparently.

Inspired by the camaraderie shown by the college teams they’d seen on TV during the NCAA postseason, North augmented its dancing with accessories when IHSA

regionals started last month.

Players raided their closets and/or attics for elaborate rally caps, which included a tiara, fireman hat and an oversized cowboy hat with a Blackhawks logo on one side.

Tongue in cheek, North Stars coach Tom Poulin described his rally cap as “like this oversized party hat, but it looks more like a dunce cap, which is very fitting.”

“You know what, it’s what they want to do,” Poulin added. “We keep telling them, ‘Be you. Be us. We don’t need to be anyone else. We’re good enough just being us.’ And you know what, if that’s what they want to do, then do it. We had some college coaches go, ‘I love the fact you let them do that.’ I’m thinking, ‘Why wouldn’t you?’ You’re supposed to enjoy this.”

Kaneland certainly did Monday, even though the crew in Rosemont’s press box apparently wasn’t taking requests.

“It was big today,” Cohrs said. “We were down a little bit during that delay, and then we started dancing, and we were good to go.”

One batter – Jessica Turner – reached base after leaning into a pitch and taking the ball off her forearm. But that was it. The Indians had no hits and eight strikeouts through five innings.

“I was just happy to make contact,” an exhausted Mariah Dionne of Marengo said after the game.

All it took was one hit, a leadoff single from junior Aubrey Wzientek in the sixth, to break the offensive futility. Two batters later, Turner reached on an error.

Marengo’s leading hitter, Veronica Ruelius, then dumped a single into center to score Wzientek and break a scoreless tie.

An error in left field off the bat of Dionne scored two more, and the Indians held on and defeated Wauconda, 3-2, at Sharon J. Drysdale Field to reach the state semifinals for the third time in

five years.

The Indians (34-6) play Kaneland (24-8) at 10 a.m.

Friday in the Class 3A state semifinals at East Peoria’s EastSide Centre.

“Our kids work extremely hard, and they definitely deserve it,” Marengo coach Dwain Nance said. “This is what we’ve worked really hard for, busting our butts, and the kids just played amazing.”

Dionne finished off the Bulldogs (27-12) with a perfect seventh, striking out the first two batters and recording the final out on a comebacker.

Dionne’s teammates charged the sophomore in the pitcher’s circle after the final out, as players and coaches jumped up and down and celebrated Marengo’s first trip to state since 2012.

“We had to buckle down,” Dionne said of battling Wedl and the Bulldogs. “We knew we could do the job – we knew we could get it done.

We just had to put our minds to it, and we got it done.”

Dionne’s fly ball with two outs in the sixth bounced in and out of the glove of Wauconda’s left fielder, scoring Turner and Ruelius to give

Marengo a 3-0 lead.

But it was Wzientek’s leadoff single in the sixth that started Marengo’s threerun inning.

“I was just saying to myself, ‘Get the first hit; I want that first hit,’ ” Wzientek said. “She gave me a changeup and I just held my hands back and drove it.”

Wauconda scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth after a one-out error, but shortstop Leah Secor cut off the tying run at home plate for the second out before Dionne induced a pop out.

“I just knew right away I had to look her back,” Secor said of throwing out Wauconda’s Brooke Sefcik. “I saw her going, so I knew I had to get it down. I just got it down and JT [Jessica Turner] did a great job of tagging her.”

In the third, Marengo cut off another run at home.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Ruelius nearly made a diving catch in right field.

Instead, she handled the liner on the bounce, popped up and threw a strike to home to retire Hailey Davenport and keep the game scoreless.

Kaneland boys basketball coach Brian Johnson confirmed Tuesday he has been selected as the likely replacement for legendary West Aurora coach Gordie Kerkman, who retired last month after 39 seasons.

The West Aurora School Board is expected to approve Johnson as Brian coach Monday.

Johnson “All I can say right now is I’m the selected candidate, and it has to go in front of the board and be approved on Monday,” Johnson said.

Johnson, a former Blackhawks assistant, was 99-68 in six seasons at Kaneland, guiding the Knights to regional championships in 2012 and 2014.

Kerkman’s run at West Aurora included an 805-313 mark, 24 regional titles, 13 sectional titles and five state trophies.

Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff declined comment until the move became official.

West Aurora AD Jason Buckley followed suit, but added in an email the athletic department is

These are the kinds of plays Blackhawks fans are used to seeing at the United Center. Just not from the other team.

They’re up to it. This is a team with a history of recovering from these predicament.

After losing 3-2 in Game 3, the Hawks are 30-30 (.500) in Games 1-3 of a playoff series under Joel Quenneville; they are 40-14 (.741) in Games 4-7.

No wonder they think like they do.

“We can do the things that we’re doing,” Toews said, “but just keep on raising them to another level and across the board, every guy knows there’s still more in store. If we bring that, we’ll find ways and create the bounces that we haven’t gotten the last couple of games.”

On the other side, the Lightning are playing their strong hand well.

They’re confident and pleased with how consistently they’re playing, but refusing to bask in the glory of having a 2-1 series lead after beating the Hawks at their own game in their own rink to move within two games of winning the Stanley Cup.

said this Final is a “coming-out party” for the 24-year-old Hedman, and indeed, he’s making quite a name for himself, vaulting into the Conn Smythe Trophy discussion with Keith, Patrick Kane and Tyler Johnson.

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks are so used to finishing fast after starting slowly in a playoff series under coach Joel Quenneville, it almost seems like the Tampa Bay Lightning face a bigger challenge in finishing the deal with a 2-1 series lead than the Hawks do in rallying from a 2-1 deficit.

Not quite, of course.

The Lightning have been the better team in a closely played series, with the best player in defenseman Victor Hedman. They have regained home-ice advantage. They arguably have played the Hawks’ game as well as any opponent has since the Hawks won their first Cup in 2010.

These aren’t the Ducks – a formidable, worthy opponent who didn’t have that something extra that is needed to beat the Hawks.

Nonetheless, with captain Jonathan Toews setting the all-important tone in a critical moment of the series, the Hawks are resolute in their belief they control their destiny – that it’s just a matter of staying at it, playing their game and eventually they will impose their will on the youthful, quickly maturing Lightning.

Seniors avoid taking medication for variety of reasons Dear Doctor K: My mother is supposed to take several medications each day, but she doesn’t take them consistently. What can I do to get her back on track?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet when you were a kid and your parents were hounding you about taking your medicine, you never imagined a day would come when you’d be doing the same to them.

Nearly three out of four Americans report that they do not always take their medication as directed. So there are a lot of people who are in the same position as your mother. And, obviously, for the medicines to work, a person’s got to take them.

I don’t know your mother, so I don’t know why she isn’t taking her medications as she should.

But I can tell you about some reasons my patients have shared with me for not taking theirs.

One of the biggest issues is cost. People are often prescribed a brand-name drug that they can’t afford. If cost is an issue for your mother, she should talk to her doctor or pharmacist. A generic alternative may be just as effective.

If your mother is on Medicare

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and hasn’t enrolled in the Medicare drug program (called Part D), suggest that she check into that. It may be able to cover a big fraction of her drug costs for relatively little money (compared to the cost of the drugs).

Another reason people don’t take their medicines as directed is the fact that many older people are on multiple medicines. It can be hard to keep track of what to take, and when. Many people simply forget. If you think that may be a problem, suggest strategies to help your mother stay on schedule. For example, she can use a seven-day pillbox; set alarms on her watch, phone or clock; or make a chart that shows when to take which medicine.

If your mom uses a computer or smartphone, a medication management app could help.

These apps organize pill information and remind you when to take them. There also are automatic pill dispensers that pop out

the right pills at the right times.

Many pharmacies offer programs to call and remind you to get a prescription refilled. Other programs estimate when you’ll finish a medication and automatically refill the prescription, then remind you to pick it up.

Maybe side effects are a problem. If so, encourage your mother to talk to her doctor. The doctor may be able to switch the medication or adjust the dose to eliminate the side effects, or at least make them more manageable.

Finally, I’ve found that my patients are more likely to take their medications if they understand why they need them. When a doctor hands you a prescription, he or she should make sure you understand what it’s for and what will happen to you if you don’t take it. Your mother should not hesitate to ask for this information – even if she has been taking a particular drug for years.

Do American students need more school days?

Dr. Wallace: My parents were both born in Germany and went to school in Munich.

They told me that most European students spent more days at school than American students do, and they think we should go to school more days. I asked my teacher how many days we spend in school in a year, and she said 180 days. I think my dad is kidding because 180 days seems sufficient to me.

Do you agree? – Margot, Rhinelander, Wisconsin Dear Margot: Your teacher is correct. American students spend less time in school than most students in other industrial countries.

Many American educators agree with your father. The consensus is that 200 days of productive education per year is ideal. Ireland, Canada and France have 185 days of school per year while Great Britain requires their students to be in class 192 days.

Germany, South Korea and Japan have the longest school year at 243 days.

Most American administrators agree that our schools should be in session about 200 days, and I would agree.

Dr. Wallace: As a nurse, I would like to add to your list the harmful effects of cocaine.

Cocaine is a potent vasoconstrictor, causing high blood pressure. This in turn makes the heart work harder, leading to an enlarged heart, and later, heart failure.

The high blood pressure also damages the kidneys. We see young people going on hemodialysis, until, if they are lucky, they can get a kidney transplant.

Also, the extreme rise

It really bothers me that she seems to be jealous of the time I spend with Dave. He also appears to be jealous of her because we are so close.

In bridge, though, if you remember, you will often end up smiling; if you forget, you will surely be sad.

In today’s deal, look only at the West hand. East opens one club, South overcalls four spades, and after two passes, East doubles to show a very strong hand that is presumably short in spades.

After West decides to pass (do you agree?), what should he lead?

East might open two clubs, but three-suiters need bidding space, which would be at a premium after a two clubs-two diamonds-three clubs start to the sequence.

South made a sensible four-spade overcall. This would typically have required an eightcard suit, but with two singletons, it was a good idea to consume as much bidding space as possible.

Make life as difficult for responder as you can.

Over East’s balancing double, West had a tough call. His balanced hand suggested defense, but his useful minor-suit honors hinted at offense. (In this layout, six clubs fails if South leads a spade.) I think most experts would have passed.

When the opponents sacrifice, especially at a high level, it is (almost always) right to lead a trump. In this carefully constructed deal, if everyone is playing double-dummy (knowing where all 52 cards lie), that is the only lead to defeat four spades. South can be held to seven spades and two club ruffs in the dummy.
