Restaurant, apartments again eyed Group out of Wheaton aiming to resurrect proposal for Thomle building

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A plan to put a restaurant and apartments in the city-owned Thomle building, as well as a privately owned adjacent building, might be resurrected.

St. Charles-based Corcoran Commercial Real Estate in April withdrew its proposal to acquire the Thomle building at 2 E. Wilson St., Batavia, along with the privately owned 4-6 E. Wilson St. building. Corcoran had plans to develop restaurant space on the first floor and five apartments on the upper levels.

In addition, Batavia business owner Michael Grudecki in February pulled his proposal to turn the Thomle building into a martini lounge. In pulling his proposal, Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, said he was tired of the city dragging out the process.

Batavia Enterprises Real Estate has been marketing the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building for the past two years. Austin Dempsey, the company’s vice president, said he recently was approached by a group out of Wheaton that had interest in developing the Thomle building and 4-6 E. Wilson St. building for a restaurant and apartment project.

posal for development of the 10,470-square-foot building and the Thomle building by a group of investors.

Dempsey said he was “disappointed” the Corcoran proposal didn’t happen. And he believes one hurdle that still needs to be addressed is the lack of parking in that

corridor.

Since 1997, the city has owned the historical, 1876-built Thomle building.

The city in the past has rented the space to businesses at a reduced rate to encourage new businesses into downtown.

City Administrator Bill McGrath said city staff is recommending the Thomle building return to that use for the time being.

Aldermen vote to switch to flat electric rate all year

Bluffs developer open to changing proposal

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva electric customers will no longer have higher rates during summer peak usage hours, as aldermen recommended an amendment to the city code for a flat rate all year for all classes of electric users, residential, commercial and industrial.

The change will result in a 6.5 percent rate increase to all classes of electric users, officials said.

Acting as the Committee of the Whole on Monday, aldermen unanimously approved the change, following the presentation of an electric rate study by Gary Price of Price Consulting Services, Inc. The change goes into effect

once the City Council takes final action to approve it.

Public Works Director Dan Dinges said the effect will be that peak and nonpeak usage will be calculated the same way every month.

“During the summer months, your [bill] will be actually less, because your rate is less,” Dinges said. “But from October, your rate is not going to drop like it did in the past. It’s going to be up above the nonpeak, but lower than the peak.”

Like most electric utilities, the city’s peak rate is from June through September with a lower rate October through May, he said.

The flat rate reflects electricity’s production cost adjustment into the base rate to electric customers, officials

said.

Price reviewed Geneva’s electric utility rates comparing its current rate, the cost of different rate classes, seasonal rates and flat rates and large industrial rates, among other aspects, he said.

The study was done before Prairie State Energy Campus, where Geneva gets about half its power, raised its rates, Price said, but it did not change the outcome of rate studies per class of electric customer.

The rate study also compared Geneva’s rates to other municipal utilities, ComEd and aggregates.

“Geneva rates are very competitive, I’d say, relative to others,” Price said. “Geneva’s present and future rates lead the pack.”

ST. CHARLES – The developer of a proposed housing development west of St. Charles on Monday said they are willing to revise the plan based on feedback from elected officials and residents.

The development team went before the city’s Planning and Development Committee with their existing plan for The Bluffs of St. Charles. The proposal would require 96 acres to be annexed into the city and then subdivide it in about 285 single-family residential lots.

The development is proposed to be at the southeast corner of Route 38 and Brundige Road in unincorporated Campton Township.

The concerns range from the number of proposed houses to its effect on the Fox Valley Aero Club that operates nearby.

“We do believe there is plan that could be acceptable to the city and [the

neighbors],” said Chuck Hanlon, the St. Charlesbased urban planning principal at Wills Burke Kelsey Associates, at Monday’s committee meeting.

Hanlon said one of the things the group will address is how the development might coexist with Brundige Road – which is part pavement and gravel – and its designation as a rustic road.

The St. Charles City Council aldermen who sit on the Planning and Development Committee expressed a variety of opinions on the development.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin preferred the 96 acres be annexed into St. Charles as property of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

Third Ward Alderman Bill Turner was in favor of The Bluffs development, but perhaps under different zoning.

“I really think we ought to develop this property, because it’s going to get annexed anyway,” Turner said.

REHAB FOR HOMES Kane County Foreclosure Redevelopment program aims to help

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Contractors recently began working to turn a long-neglected foreclosed house, tucked in the curve of a cul-de-sac on Cedar Drive in North Aurora, from an “eyesore” back into a livable home, worthy of purchase.

Workers carried out shovels full of old insulation, pieces of the roof that caved in and old ceiling tiles, and put them into a construction dumpster.

Others used crowbars to pull out rotted, crumbling window frames. Another group tore down a wall to take a converted fourth bedroom back to its original purpose as a one-car attached garage.

Property records show it was purchased in June 2004 for $131,200.

The former owners bought the house intending to “flip” it, neighbors said, but when the market collapsed and they could not refinance, they left it to the bank.

Court records show it was foreclosed in December owing nearly $70,400.

Because of its long-term neglect – it needs to be gutted – no private buyer would invest in this fixer-upper, said Josh Beck, assistant director for Kane County Community Development. So federal dollars will turn the house into a home again, through the Kane County Foreclosure Redevelopment Program, he said.

“This is a house we bought off the market,” Beck said.

“Bank foreclosed, abandoned for anywhere from six to 18 months. Roof was collapsing in ... fence is falling down. You can see where the insulation is – they haven’t gotten to that part yet. These are the type

A neighbor on Cedar, Nancy Reid, said she was glad to hear the house would be fixed up and put on the market.

“It’s an eyesore,” Reid said.

“It’s been that way for an awful long time now. I’d rather see people living there and keeping it up than having it look the way it does right now.

and take care of it.”

••• The Foreclosure Redevelopment Program is one of three federally funded programs that support homeownership, said Scott Berger, director of the Kane County Office of Community Reinvestment. First Time Home Buyer Assistance helps with down payments, and Homeowner Rehab Assistance helps with loans to homeowners to rehab their homes.

Funding for these programs can vary each year, Berger said, but the average during the past four years is $615,000 that supports these three programs.

Projects like the one at 23 Cedar Drive have to be green and energy efficient, so they use high-end insulation and windows, Beck said. Another example will be replacing

a broken front sidewalk with water permeable pavers.

The rehab will cost about $100,000, Beck said. Then it will be put on the market for the appraised value when it is completed.

Because the program is federally funded, there are income requirements for potential buyers, Beck said. The buyer pool is somewhat restricted that way, Beck said, but a family of four with an income of $58,000 at current interest rates, could qualify to buy a $170,000 house.

Potential buyers also are required to take an eight-hour homeownership course to support their ability to keep their houses, Beck said.

“I’ve seen data out there that programs like this have had a very, very low foreclosure rate, less than 3 percent,” Beck said. “We have to do 30-

year fixed, no adjustable rate ... [because] if it adjusts too high, it can be unaffordable that quick, and he can be in a foreclosure.”

Although the county’s program has done 33 houses, it also partners with other agencies, such as Community Contacts Inc., based in Elgin, which is doing the rehabilitation at 23 Cedar Drive.

“We do weatherization, home rehabilitation, energy assistance,” said Lowell Tosch, executive director of Community Contacts, which serves Kane and DeKalb counties. “We do affordable rentals and foreclosures, rehab them and, in most cases, we sell them to an eligible homeowner. We partner with Kane County on that.”

Berger said the county began its foreclosure redevelopment program in 2010 in the midst of the housing crisis.

When a house is foreclosed and then abandoned, it affects the neighborhood in a negative ripple effect, Berger said, but the ripple is positive once the house is rehabbed.

“It’s not just about purchasing and rehabilitating the house, but the indirect benefit to the neighbors next door and down the block,” Berger said. “When they go to sell their property, that blighted property would have dragged their value down.”

When houses are sold, the county recoups most of the money, and it goes back into the fund for continuing housing support, Berger said.

Another neighbor to 23 Cedar Drive, Miguel Sanchez, 17, said he would like to have neighbors again.

“The neighborhood is pretty nice; we all keep our houses pretty clean,” Sanchez said.

Mr. Snyder proudly served his country in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked many years as manager of building maintenance for the Towanda, Pennsylvania, School District. Ralph loved to travel and also enjoyed woodworking, hunting, gardening and photography. His greatest enjoyment in life, however, was

spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Mary Lou (Jones); two daughters, Lori (William) Snyder-Harvill of Florida and Chris (Gene Sr.) Snyder-Lary of Georgia; and three grandchildren, Joseph Harvill, Andrew Still and Briana Still.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.

VIRGIL TOWNSHIP – A corn crib burned to the ground, and an abandoned barn was partially damaged Monday afternoon when a rubbish fire got out of control, said Kevin Peterson, Maple Park fire chief.

The rubbish fire was burning northeast of the barn and directly east of the crib, located on the property at 49W368 Winters Road in Virgil Township, Peterson said. The Maple Park Fire Department was dispatched to the incident at 3:29 p.m.

Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters found the corn crib burned to the ground.

“The wind carried [the fire] into the corn crib, and that caught the barn roof on fire,” Peterson said.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire and put out the embers that landed on the barn roof.

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damages, according to Peterson.

He said no residents or firefighters were injured during the incident.

Bryan Rundle of Janesville, Wisconsin, was tending to the rubbish fire when he said the wind suddenly shifted and spread the fire to the crib.

“I saw smoke on it, and I didn’t hesitate to call 911,” he said.

Rundle was on the property with a small crew tearing down part of the unused barn, which he said was scheduled for partial demolition along with the corn crib.

He purchased the barn for an undisclosed price and planned to keep the flooring joints, weather vanes and cupola on top of the barn.

The barn was razed in 1924 to replace a previous barn on the property, Rundle said.

“A fire [from a lightning strike] burned the old one down – quite ironic,” Rundle said.

Among the fire companies that assisted Maple Park at the scene were Elburn and Countryside, Burlington, Big Rock, Cortland and DeKalb.

Dragon boat racing a RiverFest tradition

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After competing in dragon boat racing for three years in a row at the City of St. Charles RiverFest, Elburn resident Julie Keen said she knows the importance of teamwork.

“That’s the most important thing, to have a group of people who can keep in rhythm,” Keen said.

Dragon boat racing was just part of the fun at RiverFest. The three-day festival concluded Sunday.

The dragon boat races have been an integral part of the festival, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year.

Keen has been participating

for the past three years as part of the FitMama Dragon Boat Racing team.

FitMama is a fitness facility in Elburn. The team is the only all-female team that competes in the dragon boat races.

“We do it for camaraderie,” Keen said. “It’s fun to keep it just women.”

Erin Schaefer, owner of FitMama, previously had participated in the dragon boat races with the St. Charles Mothers Club.

“It’s a fun day,” Schaefer said. “It is a great chance for all the women to get to know each other more in a social atmosphere.”

Pottawatomie Park was named after the Potawatomi tribe that settled in the area from 1700 to 1833.

Cloud said her group is trying to keep that history alive, such as through its dance demonstrations.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Pam Otto has worked for park districts for more than 14 years, but she’s been a lover of the outdoors all her life.

“My earliest memories are being outside catching bugs, staring at them in wonder and thinking, ‘I’ve gotta learn more,’ ” Otto said.

Otto’s search for answers and exploration led her to a job with the Fox Valley Park District after a stint in writing and publishing.

Then in 2007, she joined the St. Charles Park District in the city she has called home since 1993.

Thanks in part to the St. Charles district, Otto on Saturday received the 2014 Conservation Award from the Elias Kent Kane Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The award ceremony was part of the Kane chapter’s June luncheon at the Elgin County Country Club in Elgin.

Gayla Steel, regent of the Kane DAR chapter, pinned a medal to the lapel of Otto’s black Hickory Knolls Discovery Center jacket before giving her the award certificate and a hug.

The luncheon audience of about 50 people included a few St. Charles Park District

staff members, including Laura Rudow, Otto’s supervisor and superintendent of parks and planning, and Holly Cabel, director of parks and recreation.

Cabel said Otto was definitely the park district’s candidate for the award, which is given to those who contribute to education, youth leadership and conservation-related media. Otto is the park district’s manager of nature programs and interpretive services.

Otto explains conservation in a way that’s easy to understand to others through presentations and in her written columns, Cabel said.

Otto is also a member of the Park District’s Green Team and provides conservation tips to the staff, such as how to understand the numbers on recyclable containers.

Receiving the Conservation Award is no easy feat, said Sharon Hare, the DAR Kane chapter’s conservation chair.

Award nominees have to be vetted by the local chapter and then at the state level.

Otto said she was thrilled to be nominated. It’s an honor to receive an award for talking to people and inspiring them about their surroundings, she said.

“I’d be doing this whether I had a job or not,” Otto said.

Obama administration’s destructive war on media

By ALBERT R. HUNT Bloomberg News WASHINGTON – Few presidential candidates enjoyed better press than Barack Obama in 2008. He reciprocated by promising unprecedented “openness in government” and a new era of transparency.

He has fallen far short of the promise. This administration has prosecuted more whistle-blowers for leaks and gone after more journalists than any of its predecessors.

In a report last year, Leonard Downie, the former executive editor of the Washington Post, said the administration’s efforts to crack down on information seeping to journalists is “the most aggressive” since President Richard Nixon was in office.

The issue was crystallized anew last week when the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from New York Times reporter James Risen, who has been ordered to testify in the trial of Jeffrey Sterling, a former Central Intelligence Agency official. Sterling is charged with giving Risen classified information about an attempt to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program. The Justice Department has relentlessly pursued Risen, and he could face jail time for failing to comply with the subpoena.

Why has this once-media-friendly administration turned neo-Nixonian? Insiders say it’s the pressure of the powerful national-security apparatus and the fear among Obama aides that the president could face the wrath of the intelligence community if he fails to act tough.

In the U.S., the news media has considerable protections when it comes to censorship or libel, but they don’t apply to news gathering. Starting with

a 1972 decision – handed down 12 days before the Watergate break-in – courts have held that the media has no automatic privilege to protect the identity of a source.

Some in the media say the answer is a federal shield law that protects a reporter’s right not to divulge sources. Yet that would raise complicated questions about who would be covered, and any measure that could pass Congress would exclude national-security matters, the area in which most controversies arise.

Even Judge David Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals, who is sympathetic to the news media’s case, has doubts about such a measure. What if, Tatel asks, nuclear secrets were illegally leaked to a blogger who then posted the information on her website; would the blogger be entitled to refuse to testify about her sources?

Thus, on the federal level, much depends on an administration’s attitude. Since Nixon, most have taken a comparatively benign posture. The Obama administration has pursued more journalists, secretly looking at phone records and credit-card transactions and surreptitiously tracking their movements.

A federal judge dismissed the proceedings against Risen, but the Obama administration successfully appealed the decision. Attorney General Eric Holder has vowed in private meetings and some public pronouncements to change this approach. With the decision by the Supreme Court last week, the Risen case offers the opportunity to do so.

The best bet is the government won’t drop the case or prosecute Risen; it will simply decline to call him in the Sterling case. That would provide little clarity.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LITTLE TO FEAR To the Editor: I recently returned from a school year in Moscow, Russia’s immense capital. I’m excited to be back in the USA for a whole host of reasons.

But do you know what thrilled me most at O’Hare?

Bilingual signs.

People of color with jobs other than handing out flyers on the street. Diversity. There are no signs that I saw in Tajik or Kyrgyz in Moscow and little attempt to realize that the immigrants and city natives who don’t speak Russian are valuable humans, too.

It is wonderful to speak English again and to hear Spanish at “Rocket Park” in St. Charles and at Geneva Commons.

Thus, it frustrates me to return to the perpetual English vs.

Spanish arguments in “Sound Off.” It saddens me to realize that the conversations I’ve

been trying to have in Moscow were perhaps hypocritical – for how can I hold up my country as a beacon of equality when my reality here is not so shining?

Two languages make our country stronger. It helps make necessities more accessible. It makes us equals, despite our differences. Most importantly: It shows that we derive strength from diversity, that we do not need to lash out at that which we do not understand.

Without delving too deep into Russian politics, I believe some recent trends are based on a profound sense of insecurity, of not knowing what the country and its peoples are meant to be in the post-Soviet world.

And that creates aggression toward the different people. I see this as a reason behind the horrible status of immigrants,

people of color and those who don’t speak Russian in Moscow.

Please tell me we are not so unsure, so terrified. We have little to fear, least of all that many people here speak Spanish. Please see how good it is that we can learn more through breaking down barriers, despite the work that remains to be done. Please let me use this country as an example. Please think of liberty – of the freedom to express oneself and connect with others – and justice for all.

We are so much better than this pointless fear of an integral part of our country’s story.

Now let’s act like it, if not for the sake of our neighborhoods, then for the people around the globe who really do take our words and deeds to heart.

After Connors’ goal with 33:22 to play in the opening half, East gained traction and carried play for most of the rest of the half. East’s best scoring opportunity came when junior Darcy Cunningham darted in off a deft set-up from senior Anna Corirossi but Cunningham’s shot inside the box was smothered by New Trier goal-

keeper Dani Kaufman.

“It was a great give-and-go between Anna and I,” Cunningham said. “She always plays me right where I need it. I probably chose the wrong shot selection. I should have slotted it to the corner, and I shot it straight at the keeper.”

East narrowly outshot New Trier, 15-14, though the Trevians forced Sheehan to make 10 saves while Kaufman had four stops. East, though, rifled several others that flirted with tying the match, including a free kick from Shannon Rasmussen with about 6 minutes left in the second half that whistled a couple feet above the crossbar.

Rasmussen (four shot attempts) and Cunningham (three) were consistently dangerous while East’s midfield – led by seniors Amanda Hilton and Corirossi, plus junior Kelli Santo Paulo – continued to win more than their share of balls to facilitate the Saints’ possession.

Jennison thought East deserved a better fate.

“That’s the beauty and the tragedy of soccer is that the best team doesn’t always win,”

Jennison said. “But I do want to give big congratulations to New Trier. Any team that can defend like they did, those kids are just rock solid.”

The result marked the 11th straight shutout win for the Trevians, who prevented the Saints from winning the program’s first state title since St. Charles High split.

East’s orange-clad fans nonetheless maintained high spirits during the trophy presentation, and East players credited Saints fans’ energetic cheers and chants for lifting their morale during and after the match.

“Our hearts were full coming in and our hearts are full right now,” Hilton said.

Hilton, a four-year varsity pillar for the Saints, planned to hit the road Sunday morning for Nebraska as she gears up for college soccer.

Her final moments as a Saint made for quite the sendoff.

“Two big things,” Hilton said. “Let’s just say this is a weekend I will never forget for the rest of my life. For good reasons.”

NAPERVILLE – The St. Charles East girls soccer team was an underdog on paper but the Saints sure didn’t look the part on the field.

The Saints lost Saturday night’s IHSA Class 3A girls soccer state championship match to New Trier, 1-0, but the Saints’ play – a state championship-caliber performance, in coach Paul Jennison’s estimation – provided a large measure of solace.

“When these girls got to raise that second-place trophy and the fans are right behind them, that’s the stuff they’ll remember,” Jennison said as a postgame drizzle fell on the North Central College turf.

“They won’t remember the score but they’ll remember the whole setting, they’ll remember the fans they had, they’ll remember the support they had. That makes it all worthwhile.

“There weren’t many tears.

A lot of them knew they left it all out there. I couldn’t ask for any more. If you’d have offered me this at the start of the season, I’d have snapped your hands off and said ‘Absolutely.’ ” New Trier finished the season 31-1, its lone loss coming to Waubonsie Valley, the team the Trevians ousted in Friday’s state semifinal. Waubonsie won third place over Lincoln-Way North preceding Saturday’s championship match.

East (19-5-5) conceded an early goal for the second straight day when New Trier defender Sarah Connors doubled her season goal output by lofting a 40-plus yard shot that floated just beyond the reach of Saints goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan, who had started the match with a pair of quality saves in the opening minutes.

East fans make impression

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com The St. Charles East girls soccer team was edged on the scoreboard in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state championship match but certainly not in the stands.

A large, rowdy contingent of East fans congregated at North Central College and made their presence felt throughout the Saints’ 1-0 loss to New Trier.

“It was amazing,” East junior forward Darcy Cunningham said. “So many people came out. We weren’t expecting this many people here.

People were here when we were warming up. It was great Darcy Cunningham to see all the support we had.

We had more fans than New Trier, so that was great.”

Senior midfielder Amanda Hilton became Amanda emotional in Hilton saluting East’s student body, which gave the Saints rousing ovations at several points during and after the match.

“Man, they really brought it,” Hilton said. “I couldn’t be more thankful. I bleed black and orange, and to see all of my friends and all of our friends come out and support is the best feeling in the world. It means so much to us.”

Several alumni from the program – many of whom graduated quite a while ago – either attended the matches in Naperville or passed along their well-wishes leading up to the weekend.

“It’s an unbelievable town and it’s an unbelievable atmosphere,” East coach Paul Jennison said. “The support they’ve shown, to see the staff and the student body out there, that just makes you glow with pride. I mean, you can’t deny that.

“I think the support we’ve had all year from the parents and the fan base has been amazing.”

Second thoughts for Sheehan: dominate a box, shot-stopping, East senior goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan planned to conclude her soccer career this season.

Now, she’s not so sure.

Perhaps influenced by the Saints’ postseason thrill ride in recent weeks, Sheehan said after Saturday’s match that she’s pursuing options to play collegiately.

“I made my decision before the season started and I didn’t realize how much I’d Kendra miss it,” SheeSheehan han said. “I can’t give this up. I can’t give up these feelings, this game.”

Sheehan made a strong final impression with the Saints, notching several challenging saves and aggressively closing down shooting angles for New Trier’s speedy forwards to enable East to remain in striking distance of the Trevians throughout the match.

“I haven’t seen many better keepers around,” Jennison said. “She has the ability to

distribution. I think she’s an excellent goalkeeper. Very proud of the way she’s played.

She’s been one of the main reasons we’re here. I think she can go on to be a top college player if she puts herself in the right position to do so.”

Time to reload: Jennison said this year’s senior class will be “irreplaceable” but the Saints nonetheless project to bring back Paul Jennison substantial talent next spring, including starters such as forwards Cunningham and Sophie Jendrzeczyk, midfielder Kelli Santo Paulo and defenders Mallory Mollenhauer, Sara Buetow and Sonia Ost. “The players coming forward now have got a benchmark,” Jennison said. “They’ve got to really raise their level in order to achieve what we did this year.”

The girls soccer program gave East a team state runner-up for the second straight spring after East’s softball team took second place in Class 4A in 2013. The Saints’ girls track and field team placed third as a team and produced a pair of championship relays last month.

“St. Charles East generally has been on the up-and-up recently,” Jennison said. “Athletics are getting back to where they belong, and obviously we were very proud to play our part in that.”

QUICK READ Kevin Druley • Before the clubhouse yielded to the plastic wrap and champagne treatment Saturday night as the Cougars clinched the division title, the scene was far more passive ahead of first pitch.

Whether they tracked siblings, friends or a school’s fellow alumni, the Cougars were tuned into the final day of the draft, which included rounds 11 to 40.

• Former St. Charles North and Nebraska left-hander Zach Hirsch recalls a “split childhood” of baseball fandom. Born in St. Louis, he moved to suburban Chicago at age 10 but still clung to his Cardinals loyalty in the face of many Cubs backers.

On Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers drafted Hirsch in the 19th round, but Hirsch wasn’t fazed about joining another of St. Louis’ NL Central Division rivals.

“Miller Park’s a pretty sweet place,” Hirsch said.

Three players each from the St. Charles East and North boys lacrosse teams recently earned nods as part of the all-Upstate Eight Conference first team.

For North, selections were Joe Davis (defensive midfield), Jud Huxtable (midfield) and Zach Woeste (defense). For East, Nate Campana (midfield), Brandon Huff (midfield) and Tyler Vogel (attack) were honored.

Geneva attackman Brandon Heimbuch also was part of the first team.

Wes Benjamin and Will Remillard share a slight baseball connection in that both have charged up batteries at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Benjamin pitched there for St. Charles East when the Cougars’ home still was called Elfstrom Stadium. Remillard remains part of the catching rotation for the Midwest League Western Division’s first-half champs, his recent trip to the disabled list notwithstanding.

Friday, the players moved toward further common ground when the Texas Rangers drafted Benjamin, a Kansas lefthander, in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft. Texas did so knowing of Benjamin’s Tommy John elbow surgery in April.

Last June, the parent Cubs picked Remillard in the 19th round despite a back injury that cost him the end of his season at Coastal Carolina. Like Benjamin, Remillard was a junior.

“It took a lot of thought that went into it,” Remillard said. “I didn’t sign until the last day. ... I just knew by signing I would get the best treatment and the best people to help me get healthy, and that was a huge part of why I signed.”

Benjamin entered the draft with a similar rationale, weighing the glut of information he had received from big league scouts before and since the injury with past experience.

In 2011, the New York Yankees drafted Benjamin in the 48th round just a few days after his final season at East. It wasn’t exactly the slot he was expecting. This time, as long as someone gave him a chance, Benjamin seemed intent on signing with an organization.

“Everything seems tragic, but I’m doing OK and it’s not necessarily as bad as people make it out to be,” Benjamin said last week. “It’s certainly not fun, but everybody has been very helpful to me and very courteous about my situation.

“I’m surrounded by great people and I’m really blessed to be where I am.”

Here are a few more postdraft tidbits:

GENEVA – Two familiar faces were back in Cougars uniforms on Monday. One’s been gone a month. The other was making his first appearance with the team in a year.

And the two were equally deserving of headlines in the 2-1 series-finale win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Cougars finished the first half of the season with a 28-7 home record. They play their final first-half games on the road.

Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney started his rehab assignment Monday with the Cougars, his second such appearance with the Class-A affiliate in as many seasons. He played in just one game in his 2013 stint, going 1 for 4 in that contest. He went 0 for 2 against Cedar Rapids – which is coincidentally where he grew up – walking in his first plate appearance, lining out to second in his second and grounding out to first in his third.

He’s supposed to be sticking around a little longer this time while recovering from a hamstring injury that’s kept him out of MLB action since May 2. Cougars manager Mark

“We just say hi, who we are,” said Cougars outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr., who watched Sweeney play with the Oakland A’s on TV when he was a high schooler in San Jose, California. “I mean, he’s a big leaguer, we’re just going to let him do his thing, and hopefully we learn a thing or two about what he does.”

The other returnee was pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng, the 19-year-old hurler from Taiwan who has been on the disabled list for a month. He hadn’t pitched since May 9 but made his seventh start with the Cougars this season Monday, receiving a no-decision after throwing just three innings.

The results were pretty good: Tseng allowed one run on two hits, striking out three.

“Great to have Tseng back, his stuff is just outstanding,” Johnson said. “You could tell he’s a little bit off. The first inning he made a lot of pitches. … The last two innings, he was all right. Ended on a positive note. Exactly what I hoped to see happen.”

By RYAN ALTMAN raltman@shawmedia.com Practicing on a short slope for a national snowboarding tournament might not be ideal for those who compete at a high level, but Hampshire resident Clint Herman has always been up to the challenge.

Herman, a 16-year-old sophomore at Burlington Central, has snowboarded for 11 years at Raging Buffalo in Algonquin, where he trains on a 150-foot slope but still has won handfuls of medals in regional and national competitions.

In addition to the challenging dimensions, Herman is challenged by competing against older racers and said it has given him the motivation to push harder.

“The races are much smaller and faster, but the competition is still good,” Herman said.

In 2006, Herman reached the podium twice at the United States of America Snowboard Association National Tournament in Colorado, where he received secondand third-place medals in boardercross and slalom.

Eight years passed before Herman returned to the podium in April at Copper Mountain, bringing home a gold medal in boardercross.

Boardercross, which is Herman’s favorite event, is a snowboard race in which six competitors race downhill facing numerous winding turns and steep jumps.

He described his recent championship experience as “exhilarating.”

“It was just pure emotion,” Herman said. “It was everything I’ve been fighting

Herman, who began snowboarding at the age of 5, gained inspiration from his brother, Hayes, who he used to watch compete.

“He did it a year before I started,” Clint said. “It looked like fun and that’s when I took it up myself.”

Hayes won second place in last year’s national boardercross event in a different age group.

Annually, Clint Herman snowboards in 20 different regional events and makes a trip to Colorado each spring, where he competes in the

USASA nationals.

Clint’s father, Scott Herman, travels with Clint and the Raging Buffalo snowboarding team and serves as both a certified coach and technical supervisor.

He spends time before each event preparing their snowboarders for competition. He said getting to watch Clint’s skills progress over the years has been special. “[Clint’s] been snowboarding for 11 years, and he started on a plastic board from K-Mart,” Scott Herman said.

“He’s progressed to the point where he’s on board-specific event snowboards. Going

through all those stages means the world to me.”

This year, Raging Buffalo took 25 snowboarders out to Colorado and ended up with seven top-10 finishers. More than 1,600 athletes participated.

“I’d like to give a big kudos to Raging Buffalo,” Scott Herman said. “To have these kids do what they do and get to the level that they get on a 150-foot hill here in Algonquin is impressive.”

Even though Clint has snowboarded for more than a decade, he still feels the same nerves before competition.

However, he explained

that being a little nervous is his favorite part of competing.

“That’s what I love about it,” Clint said. “Every time you get into the gate before you start, you get that adrenaline going.”

His success has earned him national sponsorships, including Spy Optics, GoPro and Monster Energy.

In the future, Clint would love to become a professional snowboarder if an opportunity presented itself.

“It would take a lot of hard work and dedication to [go pro], but I feel like I’m on the right track,” Clint said.

South Elgin (24-10) turned the tables on the same pitcher who defeated it in mid-April to advance to the program’s first supersectional.

Bulldogs senior right-hander Colby Green no-hit the Storm in a 6-0 victory in April, about a week before the team’s winning streak started, but Saturday struggled to match that effort.

As the Storm have contended all along, they’re a different group than the one that had its ups and downs during the Upstate Eight Conference season.

“We’ve been really hot hitting and our pitching has been working all year,” second baseman Tommy Kramer said. “So it’s really been our hitting that’s stepped up.”

South Elgin out-hit top-seeded Batavia (32-341), 11-7, but also capitalized on three Bulldogs errors and an aggressive base running strategy. Batavia had two runners thrown out at the plate.

While the Storm reached Green for five hits and five runs in 2⅔ innings, their game-turn-

nine Bulldogs he faced in relief, striking out two.

Brown relied on a curveball that was “breaking like crazy” to keep hitters guessing. He proved rather fond of that word after the game.

“It’s crazy. I was just pumped up. Everyone was pumped up today,” Brown said. “We’ve made it to this game, but this is the first time we’ve ever won a sectional championship.”

Batavia amped up its offseason dedication knowing a strong core of seniors returned alongside a promising bunch of juniors, including lefty Evan Acosta, who pitched 3⅔ innings of relief.

After an extra-inning scare from Bartlett in the regional opener, the Bulldogs seemed to relocate their pulse and maintained that confidence Saturday.

Center fielder Laren Eustace – an Indiana commit who joins Coffey (Minnesota) and pitcher/first baseman Jacob Piechota (Western Michigan) as Division I recruits – smacked a ground-rule double leading off the bottom of the first.

Schoessling drove him in with a single one batter later, then scored himself on a Max Keough wild pitch with Kyle Niemiec at bat.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Nebraska senior lefthander Zach Hirsch returned home to St. Charles this week with a good idea he’d be selected in this weekend’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Hirsch was elated Saturday afternoon when his hunch came true, although his destination still offered some novelty.

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted the St. Charles North product in the 19th round, 566th overall. That’s right, the Brewers.

“Funny thing is, I had talked to a pretty good amount of

teams during the season and then in the past few days,” Hirsch said. “The Brewers weren’t one of them. I was kind of surprised but at the same time extremely excited that they did call.”

Hirsch, in the self-described best shape of his life at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, has been feeling pretty good lately, anyway.

Recovered from a wrist injury that curtailed much of his junior year, he compiled a 5-2 record and 1.72 ERA in his final collegiate season, striking out 50 in 52⅓ innings over 31 relief appearances.

The Cornhuskers advanced to their first NCAA Tournament regional since 2008, losing to Cal State Fullerton last

weekend.

“We had a pretty sweet season at Nebraska, so I’ve had some pretty excting times the past couple weeks and this definitely stacks up there with those,” Hirsch said.

Brewers brass called Hirsch Saturday afternoon to offer brief congratulations, and planned to talk later about the specifics of his signing and potential first assignment in pro ball.

The Brewers have an affiliate in the Class-A Midwest League in Appleton, Wisconsin, but Hirsch figures he is more likely to head to their Short-A club in Helena, Montana.

In any event, simply being

in this position excites him.

Hirsch redshirted his first season after February 2010 elbow surgery, and had developed into a reliable starter by 2012. While his role shifted to relief the following season, he still was feeling strong about his development before an injury to his right wrist sidelined him for the last 31 games of Nebraska’s season.

He devoted the offseason to adding upper-body strength and “making some minor mechanical adjustments.”

Hirsch’s fastball hovered around 88 to 92 mph for much of the spring, and he found the added arm speed, when applied to his curveball, created far more break.

“It kind of developed out of nowhere,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch, who was in graduate school after earning a finance degree in May 2013, doesn’t foresee much haggling during negotiation. He said he would embrace either a starting or relief role, whatever the Brewers want him to do.

“In this time in my career, all you can really ask for is an opportunity,” Hirsch said.

“That’s the key thing you really want, to move through a system as fast as possible. So hopefully that’ll be the case.”

The Kansas City Royals drafted Butler junior lefthander Eric Stout, a St. Francis alumnus from Wheaton, in the 13th round, 393rd overall.

On Saturday, those routine words carried like a line drive off the wall for Batavia baseball players. The Bulldogs offered little to compete above them for the first time in six weeks.

All too suddenly, those final high-fives, hugs – and even instructions – had arrived.

“That’s exactly it,” senior third baseman Micah Coffey said. “I feel like we’ve earned every bit of hurt that we’re feeling right now. I wasn’t with the guys in the winter because of basketball, but these dudes, they’ve been at it. They’ve been goal-setting and they’ve been working their tails off since back when last season ended.

“Over the summer, into the fall. I just can’t say enough for the effort that they’ve put into it. And again, our coaches.

I actually thought we were going to come back from it, and then things got a little out of hand in the last inning, too.”

LAKE FOREST – Long after Jay Cutler and Jordan Palmer had departed with the rest of their teammates, David Fales lingered behind on the practice field, continuing to put his playbook into practice.

For now, the Bears rookie quarterback is nothing more than a depth chart also-ran, a developmental work in progress at a position that currently runs five deep. To some, the fact the former San Jose State standout is even here is a bit of a surprise after Bears general manager Phil Emery suggested he wasn’t interested in the Bears putting work into drafting a reserve signalcaller.

Before the Bears signed Jimmy Clausen last week, Fales found himself competing against Jerrod Johnson to be the No. 3 quarterback and for a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster. Now with Clausen – another quarterback with NFL experience – in the mix to make a team with seemingly no solidified back-up in place, Fales will be forced to work even harder.

That takes us back to the practice field last week, where Fales and Johnson took turns throwing timing patterns to back-up receivers to better prepare the quarterbacking pair for the open competition that lies ahead.

“I’m just trying to grasp the offense and keep getting better,” Fales said last week, two days before the Clausen signing took place.

Ccoach Marc Trestman told reporters Saturday at the Bears annual charity gala event that Clausen’s signing was just a matter of adding another experienced option. Trestman said he told Palmer he was planning on bringing in another quarterback, adding that Clausen’s signing was “not connected” to whether he believes Palmer, who is entering his second year with the Bears, is the right man to back up Cutler.

“We’re going to keep the competition open on a daily basis,” Trestman said Saturday.

How that impacts Fales – who was drafted in the sixth round – remains unknown. For

now, Fales is busy digesting the Bears playbook, focusing on learning the full installation of the offense after getting a small taste of what that process looks like during rookie mini-camp.

With training camp still a good six weeks off, Fales is less concerned with those around him vying for the same roster spot. Instead, he is focused to make sure he’s in a position to remain a viable player in the competition. Much of that is happening now as Fales continues to adjust to the speed things happen at the NFL level.

“It’s a lot, but if you know the base reads and just stick to it, you’ll be OK,” Fales said. “It’s just that repetition of hearing someone say the play quick, spitting it out, seeing the whole picture and then getting it out.

“A lot of the concepts are the exact same stuff (from college) – the reads are the same, but with coach Trestman, (quarterbacks coach Matt) Cavanaugh and (offensive coordinator Aaron) Kromer, there’s no gray area. With everything, you know exactly why you’re going where you’re going.”

When that’s not exactly clear, Fales has leaned on Cutler and Palmer to keep him pointed in the right direction. Fales met Palmer at an Elite 11 camp last summer in California and then worked with him again before the Senior Bowl. But it’s been Cutler who has been more instrumental in helping Fales grasp the Bears offense, giving him plenty to mull over.

A lot of times, Fales – who, along with Fresno State’s Derek Carr were the only two college quarterbacks to throw for more than 4,000 yards in both 2012 and 2013 – gets answers from Cutler to questions he hasn’t yet considered. The two talk over scenarios and quarterback reads, helping to ensure Fales is seeing what he needs to when things start to happen at full speed.

Cutler has proven to be a valuable ally in Fales’ development.

“Sometimes, I don’t even know the questions to ask because I’ve got such limited experience,” Fales said. “So he throws a lot at me and it definitely helps.”

Special To The Washington Post For this summer’s reading list, we bring you seven books published this year, each exploring the future of innovation from a different perspective. Some of the authors are YouTube stars with devoted online followings; others are academics or researchers who are just now crossing over into the mainstream. What they all have in common, though, is the ability to explain advances from sometimes arcane scientific fields – neuroscience, genetics or synthetic biology – in a way that generates a broader public discussion about the future we want as a society.

1. “The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age” by Astra Taylor (288 pages; $27): This book seems to be part of a broader zeitgeist (pioneered by the likes of Evgeny Morozov and Jaron Lanier) in which people question the type of future that we’ve been building with digital technology. There’s a sense, increasingly expressed online, that something is just not quite right – we give too much power to huge Internet giants such as Google and Facebook and all the former utopian potential of the Web remains unrealized.

We were promised a “revolution” and ended up with something more like a “rearrangement” of power and influence.

Astra Taylor argues that the Internet is actually contributing to the types of inequality that we observe throughout society and changing how we think about art and culture. If you’re wondering why the Internet is full of stories about cats instead of deep investigative journalism, this may be the book for you.

2. “The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind”

by Michio Kaku (400 pages; $28.95): While reading about neuroscience may not sound like the ideal way to lounge at the pool during the dog days of summer, Kaku is one of those rare science writers who appears to be just as comfortable on the set of “The Daily Show” as he is in a traditional academic setting. His earlier books – “Physics of the Future” and “Physics of the Impossible” – made him into a YouTube favorite (who doesn’t want to know how to make a light saber?), and now he’s back with an overview of what might be possible in the future for the human brain: uploading memories, telekinesis, and playing our thoughts and dreams the same way we might a motion picture.

What Kaku argues, essentially, is that our sense of the future of the mind is fast evolving, thanks to advances made possible by such scientific endeavors as Pres-

ident Barack Obama’s brain initiative.

It may still be some time off, but one day, Kaku says, we will be able to reverse-engineer the human brain.

Once that happens, we might be able to create human super-intelligence, treat mental illness or understand the meaning of consciousness.

3. “Super Cells: Building with Biology” by Nina Tandon and Mitchell Joachim (103 pages; $1.99 – Kindle): If you’re a fan of TED talks, it’s time to check out one of the latest entries in the TED Books series. Nina Tandon and Mitchell Joachim take us on a whirlwind tour of the latest developments in bioengineering and synthetic biology. Yes, the book appears to be a bit high on the techno-utopianism quotient, but at under 100 pages, it is a quick way to get updated on the latest advances in an emerging field the authors refer to as “bio-design.”

The book maps out the amazing future of the cell, as it is used for everything from creating personalized human tissue replacements to growing new types of food.

4. “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History”

by Elizabeth Kolbert (336 pages; $28): At first glance, Kolbert’s book – with a woolly mammoth on the cover – would appear to be a book more about the past than the future. The book’s title refers to the five great extinctions in the world’s history.

The sixth extinction is humanity’s own, brought about by radical changes to the planet’s ecosystem. Kolbert asks a poignant question: How is it possible that a technologically advanced society is slowly but methodically destroying itself?

This book will probably not go down well with the climate-change deniers, but it’s easy to see how this book is part of the new zeitgeist, especially now that the Obama administration has accepted the dire climate warnings from the United Nations as a reality. Kolbert brilliantly explains why such factors as biodiversity matter and why humanity needs to change its future by first realizing what it is doing to the planet. She draws on the latest thinking in fields ranging from geology to marine biology to explain how and why extinction happens.

5. “Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives – and Our Lives Change Our Genes” by Sharon Moalem (272 pages; $28): Moalem, a neurogeneticist by training, has figured out how to cross the dividing line between popular science and entertainment. His books – with provocative titles like “How Sex Works” – are obviously intended to cross over as many lines as possible, and he’s a frequent guest on popular media, like the “Today Show,” “The Daily Show” and

“The Dr. Oz Show.” Now he’s here to tell us how we can change our children’s “genetic inheritance.”

Moalem says that thanks to remarkable progress in understanding the human genome, we no longer need to assume that our genes can not be changed or that we’re forced to accept a certain genetic fate for our children. The human genome is fluid, and that would appear to open the future to a world of low-cost genetic screening and even genetic enhancements for our offspring.

6. “The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies” by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee (320 pages; $26.95): This book has made headlines in economic and technology circles, leading to a debate about the way robots and machines are taking over from humans. It outlines the ways that the growth of exponential, recombinant and digital technologies is leading to a brighter future for humanity.

What Brynjolfsson and McAfee argue is that the next age of machines has important implications for how we think about everything, from the future of work to the future of artificial intelligence.

7. “Creativity, Inc.” by Ed Catmull (368 pages; $28): The co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios explains the secrets of creativity. This is not so much a book about the future as about how to unlock the creativity and innovation within all of us.

Not surprisingly, the book – with a Pixar cartoon character on the cover – has been a hit with the casual reader as well as business managers eager to create a culture of creativity at work.

2. Follow up with the audiologist for regular hearing aid maintenance and care.

3. In restaurants, ask to be

seated away from high noise level areas.

Drivers with Alzheimer’s don’t belong on the road Dear Doctor K: My father has Alzheimer’s disease. Is it unsafe for him to drive?

Dear Reader: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a form of dementia that worsens over time. It often affects short-term memory early on, and then progresses to impair other cognitive functions such as thinking and judgment. As AD advances, most people lose their ability to do normal daily activities. Your question – whether your father should stop driving – is a common concern for families of a loved one with AD. The automobile has become a part of who we are in the United States. It gives us a sense of independence and the means to go nearly anywhere. Also, in many cities (like Los Angeles, where I was raised), public transportation is not nearly good enough to substitute for an automobile. To lose the freedom to drive and to become dependent on taxis, buses or subways, is for many people a sad thing to contemplate.

But when you drive a car, you control more than a ton of steel moving at high speed. Of course the world around you has to be concerned if you can’t control it.

One study found that the driving skills of people with even mild Alzheimer’s were significantly poorer than those of other elderly people, including those with some other forms of dementia.

Some people believe that driving privileges should not be taken away until a person clearly becomes an unsafe driver. But it makes no sense to me to say that a person has to prove he or she is an unsafe driver by getting into an accident that was clearly caused by failing faculties – especially when that accident damages more than property.

Your father’s general behavior in non-driving situations can give you some clues as to whether safety is likely to be an issue. For example, if your father exhibits poor judgment, inattentiveness to what’s going on around him, clumsiness, and slow or inappropriate

reactions, then those are clear signs that he should not drive.

If you feel that it is time for your father to stop driving, some experts would suggest that you try simply taking away his keys. If his dementia is substantial, after a period of confusion about where the keys are, he may simply forget about them.

Try to preserve his self-esteem. Some people agree to stop driving for reasons other than concern about their competency.

For example, you might tell your father that his car needs repair, or that the license or registration has expired.

Getting objective feedback from an impartial person can help. Some people with AD will accept a written prescription from a doctor that says, “Do not drive.”

If that doesn’t convince him, then his doctor may be able to have his driver’s license suspended with a written statement. If nothing else works, you may have to sell the car.

Two beers a day is a big deal Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and dating a real sweet guy who is also 18. We have been dating each other for over six months, and I really like him. I’ve dated a lot of guys before, some nice ones and a few jerks, but this guy is different. He is kind and honest and always in a good mood. I really think I could consider him a “keeper.”

I am a graduating senior in high school, have good grades and have been accepted at the University of Connecticut.

But I’m not sure if I want to go to college now that I’m really getting serious about Tony.

Tony was not serious about college because he has worked in his father’s auto repair business after school all through high school.

He has decided not to further his education because he will end up with a good job in his dad’s business and he really likes working there and makes good money.

I really need to know how to ask a girl out without her telling me to get lost. Can you help? – Nameless, Pekin Dear Nameless: First of all, you must understand that it is all right to be turned down for a date.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Every guy at one time or another has been told, “Thanks, but no thanks” – but they have also heard, “Thanks for asking; I’d love to go out with you.”

The key is, you’ve got to ask. I’m positive there are some girls in Pekin who would be thrilled to have your company for an evening. Some of them are sitting at home this very evening waiting for someone like you to ask them out.

Success in three no-trump is getting up nine tricks and falling four times. How should South plan to do that in this deal after West leads the spade king?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and one club. The extra winner might come from hearts or clubs. In isolation, in hearts, one would cash dummy’s king, then take a finesse; or, in clubs, take two finesses. The snag is that all of those finesses are into the West hand, the defender who presumably has long and strong spades (to be leading declarer’s known four-card suit).

Is there anything better?

Of course! South should duck the first two rounds of spades to find out if the suit is 4-3 or worse.

If it is worse, he had better run his diamonds to try to bring pressure to bear on West, then probably hope that the heart finesse works.

Here, though, spades are 4-3.

Now it cannot hurt declarer to take the third spade and return his fourth spade, pitching a heart and a club from the board.

If West shifts to a heart or club, it concedes the contract. So let’s assume he safely leads a diamond. South takes the trick on the board and runs the club 10.

That loses and West produces another diamond. Now declarer should play off his two top hearts. Here, the queen drops and the contract is home. But if she does not appear, after cashing his last two diamond tricks, South should plan on taking a second club finesse.
