“Once you got running, it didn’t matter,” said the Geneva resident, one of more than 500 people who participated in the event.

“Answers for Emmett” is

named in honor of Emmett Frank of North Aurora, who passed away in his sleep on Oct. 15, 2013, when he was 16 months old. Last year’s event raised $70,000 for the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood Foundation to increase awareness of sudden, unexpected deaths in childhood; fund research into the causes and prevention of sudden, unexplained death in childhood; and advocate for the needs of affected families.

This was the second year of the event, which featured a 5K run and a youth run as well as a silent auction and raffles.

Frazer and his family also participated in the event last year.

“The cause really spoke to our hearts,” he said.

Jeff Frank, Emmett’s father, said he was pleased with the turnout at the event, de-

spite the cool conditions.

“If it was a bit warmer, it would have made a difference,” he said.

He estimated the event raised more than $50,000.

Sudden, unexplained death in childhood is the unexpected death of a child more than 12 months old, which remains unexplained after a thorough investigation is conducted.

After the death of their son, Frank and his wife wanted to help raise awareness about SUDC. “I never had heard about it,” Frank said. “Not too many people have. I wanted to bring awareness so other people know that there is this horrific thing that can happen to you.

There’s not much you can do to prevent it right now, but they are doing research to determine if there are things that can be done to help.”

Two rescued Saturday night in apartment fire KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two people were rescued as a St. Charles apartment fire Saturday night caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters responded at 11:43 p.m. to a reported structure fire at 1742 Cumberland Green Drive and found heavy fire on the second floor of the apartment with one person trapped on a balcony and another person in a wheelchair trapped in a bedroom,

according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department.

Firefighters rescued the two by using a portable ladder from a fire engine on scene.

One person was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, and the second person was checked out by paramedics on the scene after declining transportation to a medical facility, the release stated. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes. There were no injuries to the firefighters.

The fire was discovered by a resident of the apartment com-

plex who then called 911. The loss is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and contents, the release stated.

The apartment is uninhabitable, and management staff from the complex is working with the residents regarding temporary housing arrangements.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago and South Elgin fire departments. The Elburn and Fermilab fire departments provided coverage while St. Charles units were committed to the fire.

GENEVA – When Jim Scott tuned up his guitar and sang, “To everything – turn, turn turn – there is a season – turn turn turn,” with audience participation, it felt as if he was channeling the late troubadour Pete Seeger.

Scott played a Pete Seeger Songfest on Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Society Church in Geneva to On the Web an audience of about 60.

Scott promoted audience participation the same way Seeger used to, by calling out the lyrics so everyone could sing them together.

Scott said he knew Seeger for about 40 years, half of Seeger’s performing life. A political activist known as a pioneer of contemporary folk music, Seeger died at age 94 in 2014.

Between songs, Scott spoke

that Seeger’s prison sentence for contempt was successfully appealed, he said.

Among those who came to the concert was Lou Pierce of Geneva.

“Because I’m an admirer,” Pierce said.

“I love folk music,” added Gloria Bradsaw of North Aurora.

Maryanne Kiser and Guy Todnem, both of Naperville, also came to the concert.

“I’m a real Pete Seeger fan from way back,” Kiser said.

Todnem said he was seeing a return to the social issues Seeger sang about.

“It all seems timeless now,” Todnem said. “I love his music.”

Julie Riffle and Thom Thomas, both of Wasco, said they wanted to hear Seeger’s and Scott’s as well.

“Jim Scott wrote songs for our hymnal,” Thomas said.

Marion Robbins of Winfield said she has been a Seeger fan for years. Robbins said she met Seeger when he came to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, to play for the school’s convocation, then came and sat on the floor with students – next to her – and gave another concert that afternoon.

“Then he went into town that evening to a local pub to sing, too,” Robbins said.

Ege wins both hurdles, lifts BC to runner-up finish

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Burlington Central senior Lucas Ege just wanted to defend his 300-meter hurdle crown.

He did that and then some.

Ege repeated as state champion in the 300 hurdles, won the 110-meter hurdles and provided enough of a boost to give the Rockets a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay, helping Burlington Central take second as a team at the IHSA Class 2A state meet on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.

“Since I won it last year, if I didn’t win it, I would have been super mad,” Ege said.

Not only did he win it again, he broke his own state record with a time of 37.10 seconds.

“I thought I was going slow,” laughed Ege, who won the 110 hurdles in 14.15. “I didn’t think I broke it until I saw the numbers.”

It marks the second straight season that an area team has finished as runners-up in the 2A meet – Kaneland took second place in 2014. It also is the Rockets’ best finish since they were second in 2001.

While Ege, a Stanford recruit, came into the day as the favorite to win the 300 hurdles, Kaneland sophomore pole vaulter Danny Walker just wanted to break his personal record.

Instead, he won a state

championship.

Walker broke his preliminary mark by more than a foot to win the 2A state title with a pole vault of 14 feet, 9 inches.

“It’s a crazy feeling. I don’t know,” said Walker, whose previous best was 14-0 and had a mark of 13-6 in the preliminaries Friday. “It’s like those commercials with the Stanley Cup players – I don’t know, it’s just a great feeling. The one thing that hops into your mind is don’t be satisfied. Get after it again.”

For Walker, who broke the Kaneland sophomore record with his pole vault, he will return as the defending state champion. Coming into the meet, however, he said he just wanted to break his old mark

of 14 feet.

“I knew I could get higher than 14, so it was just trying to stay focused and separated from the crowd,” he said.

“When I cleared 14, I knew I was feeling pretty good. I just wanted to keep it together.

Don’t let it fall apart. It’s like silly putty – just got to keep it together.”

St. Charles North junior Josh Pelock was third in the pole vault at 3A (15-3), St. Charles East senior Kyle Decker was fifth in the 300 hurdles at 3A (38.39), Batavia sophomore Jay Hunt finished tied for sixth place in the high jump at 3A (6-4) and Matt Fabian tied for ninth in the pole vault (13-6) for the Bulldogs.

in the 1,600 at 2A for Kaneland, breaking the school record with a time of 4:19.21.

Kaneland jumper and Illinois recruit Ben Barnes, who was the reigning state champion in the long jump, settled for a sixth-place finish in the long jump (21-8.5) and eighth in the triple jump (45-9.75).

“It’s very hard (to win state),” Kaneland coach Eric Baron said. “We coach our kids to not wait until senior year. Go and get it when the chance is there. He had a bad hamstring injury most of this season and did the most that he could. He’s such a good kid and gave everything for his team.”

Kaneland finished tied for sixth in 2A with 21 points.

ted a couple of times and had two defensive breakdowns and good teams make you pay for those. It’s tough, but it’s part of the game.”

“They converted their chances today,” freshman Gia Wahlberg said. “We have been in this position before and we just could not convert. We had a lot more chances offensively, but they took advantage of theirs and that was the difference.”

Although there was no question North would have liked to not give up the second goal, it seemed to jump start the group.

Hailey Rydberg found Wahlberg for a header goal in the 60th minute to narrow to deficit back to one.

But the North Stars could not find a way to get a second one past Conant senior goalkeeper Haley Anderson. A few sprawling saves and a couple hustle plays allowed the Cougars to advance to Tuesday’s supersectional, where Conant will get to play on its home field against New Trier with a trip

to the state tournament on the line.

But as much as the game was important, back to Vostal.

In her 15 seasons she has accomplished quite a bit, but the motto has always been to “live in the moment.” Up until that final buzzer sounded, Vostal still was coaching and doing everything she could to allow her team more time together.

“I think at the end of everything, you have to take away positives,” Durocher said.

“The last 20 minutes after we got the goal, we gave that game every single thing we had. That’s what this team was about. We changed the momentum and controlled play and that’s something that you can take away.”

As for Vostal’s voice in the matter, as she has done so many times throughout her career coaching the North Stars, we let her accomplishments and players do the talking.

Although the departure of Durocher will leave a large gap, Wahlberg will be one of the many returning North Stars who Vostal has put her faith in to carry out the tradition that she built in her 15 unforgettable seasons with the program.

“She told us she’s so proud of everything we accomplished,” Wahlberg said. “It was disappointing, but we’ve been through a lot together this year and she said it’s on us to continue what she started and that’s exactly what I plan to do.”

GLEN ELLYN – Wearing an eclectic collection of rally caps in the dugout, the St. Charles North team did not appear to be serious about playing softball in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard West Regional title game.

On the diamond, however, the North Stars were all business in the championship contest with Bartlett.

North combined clutch hitting and flawless defense to defeat the Hawks, 12-2, in five innings to win their second straight regional title.

The North Stars (27-5) advance to the Rolling Meadows Sectional where they will play either Fremd or Elk Grove on Tuesday.

“Right from the start, when the girls met this morning at school, you could tell they were dialed in,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “Our theme was give our best. We play our best and we have a good chance to win. We could show that we could take care of business, and that’s what they did today.”

Starting pitcher Jillian Waslawski was a prime factor in taking care of business.

The freshman right-hander gave up only five hits, issued no walks and retired the last seven batters she faced.

“I am proud of Jillian, coming in as a freshman, to have the year that she had, stand in

the circle and win the regional title,” Poulin said. “That tells you what type of mental toughness that she has.”

North took an early 1-0 lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second on Allison Moberg’s double.

Bartlett tied the score in their next at bat on back-toback doubles.

The North Stars got to Bartlett starting pitcher Danielle Kirby for five runs in the second.

Kirby hit Erin Nemetz with a pitch and walked Sam Hausl to open the inning.

After the next two batters struck out, Kaitlyn Waslawski smashed a double to center that plated Nemetz and Hausl.

After stealing third, the senior outfielder crossed the plate on Jordyn Wolfe’s infield single.

Wolfe scored on Abby Howlett’s home run to center.

The Hawks (22-12-1) picked up a run in the third on three consecutive two-out hits to narrow the score to 6-2. With two runners in scoring position, Waslawski ended the threat by getting Amber Pagan to ground out. Bartlett batters did not reach base for the rest of the game.

“We called them our rally caps and they really kept us going,” Jillian Waslawski said of the team’s dugout headgear that included a straw hat, a tiara and a Batman mask. “We got our inspiration from college softball.”

SCHAUMBURG – At some point this season, St. Charles North girls soccer coach Ruth Vostal was going to coach her last soccer match.

Unfortunately for the North Stars, Saturday was it.

Gia Wahlberg scored North’s lone goal as Conant stymied yet another St. Charles soccer team to end North’s season with a 2-1 loss in the Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional championship.

For Vostal, the program’s lone coach, her coaching career comes to an end after 15 seasons, the last 13 of which brought regional championships back to the school.

Another tough break for North was that the game was played, Saturday, on a day where just about every other athletic event around the area was canceled because of the rain. But that wasn’t an excuse that anyone on North was going to make.

Senior Hanna Durocher said the weather was definitely a factor, but it also was something both teams had to deal with.

“It was tough, but when you’re on the field, that’s not something you can focus on,” Durocher said of the rain. “You can’t control it, but the field was slick and it definitely made things a little more difficult.”

If the weather wasn’t going to help the North Stars, it sure didn’t help when a ball served into the box, deflected off of a North defender and into the net for the game’s first goal.

Conant (16-6-1) took that 1-0 advantage into halftime.

There was a sense of urgency by the North Stars (20-3-2) at the break, knowing it could potentially be the last 40 minutes they were going to play together.

And even though most of the play was controlled by North is the second half, a second defensive breakdown of the game allowed Conant’s Leah Celarek to double the Cougars’ lead less than 15 minutes in.

“We probably tried to do a little too much today,” Durocher said. “We overcommit-

Specially licensed dental hygienists can provide services outside of the dental office in the states that allow it, and can refer the patient to a dentist for

Dear Abby: I have been married to my husband a little over a year. He’s a wonderful man, but I feel he’s a little too attached to his mother. She lives about 20 minutes away, and he wants to go visit her almost every day.

Dear Abby: My mother has Alzheimer’s. She has been in a nursing home for 10 years. I feel sorry for her because she can’t verbalize that her teeth are killing her, but I can see the pain in her face and hear her grind her teeth. I asked for her to be seen by a doctor, but at this time we have to wait at least six weeks to see one.

Something I would like people to know is there is little dental care available in nursing homes. Because of improved dental care by the general public, many more people arrive in nursing homes with their teeth intact than they used to. This sounds good, but the problem is that patients often refuse to allow anyone to assist them with oral hygiene.

As I understand it, not many dentists are willing to shoulder the extra challenge of caring for this “difficult” population.

Once we or our loved one enter a nursing home, we need to continue their dental hygiene to the best of our abilities. We can help overworked staff by encouraging our loved ones to brush and floss. Take them out for a checkup every six months.

I can’t stand a toothache for a day. I wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone, especially someone with Alzheimer’s who cannot ask for help. I wish I had been more aware. Please let the public know how important this is. – Nancy C. In West
