Baines pleads guilty in 2012 stabbing death Batavia woman receives 25 years in prison

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A woman received 25 years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday in a 2012 stabbing death at the Batavia Apartments complex.

Latoya M. Baines, 27, who lived at the Batavia Apartments complex on East Wilson Street at the time of the stabbing, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabbing death of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25. Police had said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

Baines received 20 years in prison for second-degree murder and five years in prison for burglary. According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Baines had an unreasonable belief she needed to act in self-defense. The terms are to be served consecutively.

Kane County Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea. Baines wept as the plea agreement was read aloud in court.

Baines and Jackson had a child together, and the child

is now 4 years old. Prosecutors presented evidence that early April 30, 2012, Baines and her boyfriend – Jackson – were in a female friend’s apartment.

Sometime after 1 a.m., Baines went to her own apartment for a short time.

W h e n Latoya Baines Baines returned to the friend’s apartment, she became angry, left the apartment, retrieved knives from her own apartment and returned to the friend’s apartment, where she confronted Jackson.

The confrontation spilled into a common hallway, with Jackson following Baines down a stairwell. While on the stairs, Baines lunged at him with the knife, stabbing him once in the chest. Jackson died a short time later.

With good behavior, Baines could be released from prison in about 9½years, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar said.

She will receive 1,103 days

credit for time served in the Kane County Jail.

As part of her sentence, Baines also will have to pay Jackson’s family $11,450, equivalent to the cost of his funeral.

“We think it is an appropriate agreement in the case,” Stajdohar said. “They had a rocky relationship, which had elements of physical violence.”

Deborah Jackson, Gerald J. Jackson’s stepmother, said to reporters after the hearing that Baines constantly was aggressive toward her stepson. She said Baines had cut his arm in 2011, causing him to need 16 stitches. She said nothing happened to Baines in that case. “[Authorities] could have stopped her a long time ago,” she said. “I feel the state failed.”

Stajdohar said he could not comment on that incident.

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz previously testified in court that Baines told him she was bipolar after she was told she was being charged with first-degree murder.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A defeated referendum has not stopped St. Charles Park District officials from serving the district’s residents and finding ways to offer more programming.

“We’ll have to get creative with space,” said Jeff Greenwald, the park district’s superintendent of recreation.

forward will discuss other options and initiatives it has in lieu of the ones attached to the $28 million referendum that was rejected on April 7.

Almost 4,200 people, or 75.6 percent of the district’s voters, turned down the spending measure, according to election results.

A total of $23 million from the referendum would have gone toward building a recreation center on the west side of St. Charles. The center

was to include a multi-court gymnasium, indoor track, preschool and multipurpose space, according to the written proposition on the April ballot.

“We had a very strong response from the community that they didn’t want to see their tax dollars increased for such a project at this time,” Greenwald said.

Without a facility, Greenwald said gym space continues to be in great demand in

the district. Its only indoor gym is housed at the Pottawatomie Community Center in downtown St. Charles.

In-house park district programs have first priority at the center for space, which is allocated on a quarterly basis. Outside rental groups are permitted to fill in the spaces available once this process is complete.

Supervisors need to work with the head community center supervisor to request

additional time and prevent double bookings at the gym, Greenwald said.

At least one activity scheduled in the district’s gym, pickleball, will have some expanded space so other residents can participate in it during the warmer months.

The district will have its first dedicated outdoor pickleball court at Belgium Town Park.

McGowan said he wanted to support the referendum, but ultimately voted no on April 7. McGowan said the most requested amenity on the district’s earlier community survey was not the recreation center but buying and preserving additional open space. A $4.9 million portion of the $28 million referendum amount was to account for land acquisition and development.

McGowan said he would like to have more advance notice on any major project the district takes under consideration.

Over on the city’s west side, the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center staff is going to accommodate an extra section of Nature Preschool for 4-yearolds, said Krista Mulready, the park district’s preschool, early childhood and day camp supervisor.

The center’s staff will be available for the extra section on Mondays, which is one of the days the preschool section will meet but when the center will not otherwise be open to the public, Mulready said.

The district’s Nature Preschool program has been popular since it started in the fall of 2012, Mulready said. Sections max out at 12 students and are taught by two teachers. The program could have served twice as many students in the proposed recreation center, Mulready said.

“The referendum would have benefited the program, but we can still make it work out there without it,” she said.

As of Wednesday, Mulready said there were some limited spaces left in preschool programming starting in the fall, but there was more availability at the preschool program offered at the Pottawatomie Community Center.

Some west side district residents prefer the Nature Preschool program at Hickory Knolls for their children because it’s closer to where they live and is easier to get to in the winter months, Mulready said.

The location of the proposed recreation center was an issue for residents during the election season. The district considered the far west and east side of St. Charles and wanted to build on land it already owned, Greenwald said.

“The dead center of our boundaries is where [St. Charles] North High School is,” Greenwald said. “Unfortunately, that’s not where most of the population lives.

The population is on the lower one-third of our [park district] boundaries.”

The district does not have enough reserve funds to pursue opening a recreation center without a referendum, but it would be open to the idea of exploring a private sector partnership to make it happen, he said.

Greenwald said the city of Maple Grove in Minnesota has a partnership with Lifetime Fitness that includes a building with an attached community center.

“There’s a lot of combinations – really it’s just up to the imagination,” he said.

“They’ve been done before, and they make good business sense.”

As the district leaders did with the referendum, any proposed private partnership first would have to be approved by the park district board.

The district spent about $50,000 in architectural fees, schematic drawings and printed materials for the referendum project, Greenwald said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Susan Worline believes a lack of funds shouldn’t prevent anyone from connecting with a loved one who is in a crisis situation.

In 2012, Worline started Flying For Hope, a nonprofit organization that assists individuals and families in the event of an emergency or crisis situation by providing financial assistance for air travel and/ or bus and train tickets.

She came up with the idea after her cousin in the Seattle area had a free round-trip ticket from Southwest Airlines he wasn’t able to use. Worline recommended he donate the ticket to a local hospice organization, which he did.

“I work in hospice, and so many family members can’t see their loved ones before they pass away,” Worline said.

“And I just don’t think that is right.”

She works at Compassionate Care Hospice in Lombard.

Flying For Hope just helped its 15th person since forming.

The person needed a flight

from Boise, Idaho, to St. Louis so she could see her grandmother, who was dying.

Worline’s board will first review any application.

“It gives me such joy that I can connect people with their loved ones,” she said. “I just think it is my mission.”

Worline said she also believes in paying it forward.

Through May, Flying For Hope is raising funds for the O’Brien family in Geneva.

Julie O’Brien in March lost her four-year battle to cancer, leaving behind a husband and three children, she said.

Worline gave a presentation about her organization at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke expressed his appreciation for what she has been able to accomplish.

“We commend what you are doing with Flying For Hope,” Schielke said.

Flying For Hope relies on donations and frequent-flier miles. To raise money, the organization will hold a charity golf scramble on Sept. 11 at Orchard Valley golf course in Aurora.

ST. CHARLES – Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will hold a free tutor training workshop for residents who want to help adults read, write, speak and understand English.

It will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 12, 14, 19 and 21 at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

The workshop will teach participants how to tutor adults in English and will discuss the problems adults face when they know little about American norms and customs.

“We celebrated our firstyear anniversary and knocked down a wall to expand. Fair trade is doing fantastic,” Shamloo said. “The community really embraced fair trade.”

Aurora PD’s Aguirre named Kane County Officer of the Year KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com An Aurora Police Department officer this week was named the Kane County Officer of the Year, according to a news release issued Thursday.

Officer Samuel Aguirre on Wednesday received the Louis Spuhler Award at the 37th annual Kane County Police Officer of the Year banquet at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

Aguirre was honored for his actions after the fatal Jan. 27, 2014, crash on Interstate 88 near Eola Road that killed tollway maintenance worker Vincent Petrella and seriously injured Illinois State Police trooper Douglas Balder, the release states. Renato Velasquez,

the man charged in the crash, was sentenced to three years in prison in April.

Aurora police dispatch about 7:22 p.m. Jan. 27 received a call from Illinois State Police for help locating Balder, who was not answering his radio. Balder Samuel Aguirre was assisting a stranded semitrailer when his squad car was hit by a semitrailer while he was still inside, according to the release.

Police officers found Balder’s vehicle on fire and wedged underneath the offending semi, as well as a tollway maintenance truck on fire, with Petrella stuck inside the cab of

his truck.

While fellow officer David Brian attempted to open the driver’s side door, Aguirre climbed onto the hood of truck in an attempt to comfort the trapped driver. Aguirre had removed the broken windshield from the truck with his bare hand, staying close to Petrella and holding his hands despite the heavy smoke and fire, the release states.

Aguirre remained with Vincent Petrella until he was removed from his vehicle, according to the release.

“Officer Aguirre stayed with the driver to comfort him in his final moments,” Aurora Police Lt. Pete Inda wrote in his recommendation. “This man’s family was able to know that someone was with him, giving

Does your hometown have a poem to place it in history and give it character? Every year, after the juniors in my American literature classes at Marmion Academy read “Chicago,” I ask them to write a few lines about their hometowns. Here are a few selections from this year’s bumper crop.

Rodents may be able to predict next big earthquake

By MAC MARGOLIS Bloomberg News The 10 biggest earthquakes recorded since 1900 have taken more than 1.5 million lives – not counting the toll from the 7.8 magnitude temblor in Nepal, which has killed 7,500 and counting.

There’s some hope that the big quakes of the future could be less lethal – because we’ll see them coming. Or, at least, the rats will.

A research team working from three continents recently pored over data from a major earthquake in Peru and concluded that wild animals – especially rodents – know when the ground is about to buckle.

Days before the 7.0 magnitude Contamana earthquake that struck a remote Andean village in 2011, motion-triggered cameras revealed that most wildlife in the Yanachaga-Chemillen national park had already fled the area, returning only after the quake had run its course.

Investigators caution that any conclusions are still tentative, but the initial findings are intriguing. By tracking wildlife, the researchers say they might be able develop a data- based early warning system that could help governments and first responders to evacuate danger areas.

The latest research comes from the Andean cordillera, where animal behavior specialist Rachel Grant pored over images captured by a conservation group’s “camera traps” before, during and after the Contamana quake.

Because the epicenter of the temblor was more than 300 kilometers from the park, she didn’t expect to see much. But pictures snapped from nine infrared cameras showed that some 23 days before the quake, when not a leaf was shaking, pacas, mice, razor-billed curassows and other creatures had grown scarce. And five days before Contamana, almost no animals had been sighted.

Grant is not an earth-

quake expert, so she turned to two physicists, Friedemann Freund, at NASA’s SETI Institute in California, and Jean-Pierre Raulin, from Mackenzie University’s Center of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics, in Brazil.

Working together, the trio found that the commotion in the menagerie coincided with big changes in the Earth’s crust. Before the quake, rocks began to shift underground, generating electrical charges that reached surface water and released positive ions into the lower atmosphere. It was this ionized air that apparently made animals disoriented and hyperactive.

With enough backing, Freund reckons that within five years scientists could develop the tools to forecast a major earthquake before it hits and possibly save many lives.

There stood her mother and grandparents.

Her friends?

Not so much.

It was only a matter of time before Andersen uncorked a personal-record effort of 107 feet, four inches, placing third among River Division athletes in Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference girls track meet.

“I’m going to be honest,” Andersen grinned. “I definitely throw better when I’m mad.”

Take note, Saints fans and all other track supporters: Andersen and her fellow Tri-Cities athletes will next compete May 15 at the Class 3A St. Charles North Sectional. Among that group, East figures to enter with the most momentum after winning a River championship, scoring 159 team points to edge runner-up Batavia (157.5).

Geneva (109.5) and St. Charles North (71) followed among the eight River teams.

East ended the night with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay, as the quartet of Keeley Flanigan, Casey McNichols, Kathleen Strohaker and Allison Chmelik worked to build and keep a lead.

“We were just trying to stay in good position and stay in a good place instead of trying to run a fast split,” McNichols said.

East and Batavia jousted for positioning throughout. The Bulldogs’ Tori Ortiz clipped Chmelik, 25.8 to 26.18 for the 200 title, a big swing near the end of the night.

its stretch run, but near-perfect conditions until the night’s final events added an extra jolt.

One week after several teams in Thursday’s field huddled and chattered their teeth through the Kane County meet at East, grill sales at the concession stand were decidedly up while interest in coffee and hot chocolate plummeted.

Ominous skies engulfed the area at a few minutes past 8 p.m. To that point, the meet alternated events between the junior varsity and varsity, but an announcement soon followed confirming the varsity would complete events first from then on to beat the inclement weather.

“With the storm, I mean, the energy was really high, because everyone was running around with their heads cut off. Everyone was freaking out. And then our war-

mup was in five minutes, and it was just kind of stressful.

You’re used to being able to relax. It wasn’t on the schedule, so we started going varsity first. It was just kind of whack. It was weird.”

The 1,600, 200 and 4x400 relay passed in a veritable flash.

At least the same could not be said of lightning.

A spot shower or two passed in the interim, leaving athletes with umbrellas to welcome a few others under them. Those without umbrellas felt the raindrops with a few more new friends.

“I guess as an athlete, you’re expected to hate your opponent, but the people that I meet are really cool,” said Andersen, who has been throwing since middle school.

“They make jokes because we are the same people, basically, because we do what we love.

And shot put and discus is what we love.”

Merges blast lifts Geneva past Batavia

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Mitchell Merges was just looking for a pitch to keep the inning going in the top of the seventh with his team trailing by a run.

The junior drilled a ball into left center field that ended up clearing the fence for the game-winning three-run home run to propel the Geneva baseball team to the 10-8 win over Batavia to take two of three games in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division series.

“I really didn’t think it was going to get out,” Merges said.

“I got it on the barrel and was just hoping it would score a run. I thought it was off the fence, but when it went over it was a great feeling.”

Garrett Davis got the inning started with a single up the middle after Batavia had made a pitching change in the middle of his at-bat, with a 3-1

count.

“I knew I was going to get a good pitch to hit,” Davis said.

“It was kind of weird to have a new pitcher in the middle of an at-bat, but I tried to just put a good swing on it and get on base.”

Merges also started the game on the mound, getting a no-decision through three innings pitched, but eight of the nine outs he Mitchell recorded came Merges via strikeouts.

It started off similar to Wednesday’s game that saw the Vikings suffer a 13-0, five-inning loss to Batavia.

Batavia (12-13, 11-6) would not go away all afternoon as it answered immediately in their half of the second on a two-run home run by Steven Busby to tie the game at 5.

The wind was blowing out for a majority of Thursday af-

ternoon, which aided not just Merges and Busby’s home runs, but a solo shot from Willie Firth in the top of the third as well.

“This is the kind of game we expected,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “With the wind the way it was and a warm day, it’s what you expect. We just hoped that in a game like this we were the ones to come out on top.”

After Batavia tied the game at 7 on an unearned run in the fourth, the Bulldogs had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs. Hahn called on reliever Jack McCloughan to try and get the Vikings out of trouble.

After Firth fouled out to first, Batavia shortstop Kyle Niemiec had his sixth hit of the series, into left. Although one run scored, a relay from Wassel in left to shortstop

As McCloughan stepped on the mound to throw his next pitch, Niemiec was caught in a rundown, with Tyler Kledzik on third. McCloughan threw the ball to Hasegawa at his second base position who quickly fired the ball home to cut down Kledzik trying to score and end the inning.

“I remember turning to my assistants and saying ‘That was huge,’ ” Hahn said. “To get out of a jam like that with only one run being scored was a big lift for us.”

Geneva turned to closer Nick Porretto for the seventh, ahead by two.

Although the senior righthander made it interesting, allowing two baserunners, he struck out the side to clinch the victory for McCloughan and the Vikings.

Aggressive Bulldogs defeat Saints to move into 2nd

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia boys tennis team needed wins in the final two matches of its dual meet with St. Charles East on Thursday night.

In addition to securing a meet win, taking the last two contests would put Bulldogs ahead of the Saints in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division standings.

Batavia bested East in the those matches – at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles – to win, 5-2, and move into second

place with 33 team points to the Saints’ 31 points, which now is in third place.

St. Charles North leads the UEC River as the dual season winds down before next week’s conference tournament.

Josh Boyle won the No. 2 singles match for the Bulldogs, defeating Kevin Schreiner in two closely contested sets, 7-5, 7-6.

“It was only two sets, but very long ones,” Boyle said.

Batavia’s duo of Tommy Maren and Pat Hanrahan won the No. 3 doubles in the only match that went three sets.

They beat East’s Nick Stellon and Kevin Fortier, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1.

“It was such a nice win for my third doubles team. They looked dead in the water after the first set. The body language was bad. East had all the momentum.” Batavia’s coach Brad Nelson said. “But our guys are never out of any match. We’ve played so many three-setters this year and we’ve come back to win second sets after losing first sets so many times, I’m kind of expecting it now.

“It was just it was a big win for us. If things don’t go our

way in the first set, we will find a way to make it happen in the second set and make a match of it. They were are able to do that today. They got aggressive at the net and made some great shots.”

Said Maren: “In the third set, we just didn’t want to let go of the momentum that we had in the second set, so we just try to roll over every point and get it done quickly.”

“I really loved how the one doubles team played today.

Batavia’s Albanese commits to Louisville Batavia sophomore pitcher Glenn Albanese took the next step in his baseball career, committing to NCAA Division I Louisville over the

With two Bulldogs pitchers already committing to D-I programs in Evan Acosta (Western Michigan) and Mitch Boyer (Creighton), Albanese gives Batavia its third college prospect in the rotation, something he credits to coach Matt Holm and the Batavia coaching staff.

“It really says a lot,” Albanese said. “We have a great staff over there at Batavia, and I have to credit my coaches with a lot of my progress. They took me under their wing and have just helped me pick up things that you need in order to get to the next level.”

The 6-foot-5 right-hander

won his third game of the season Wednesday, using only 60 pitches to throw a five-inning, one-hit shutout against Geneva.

Holm has realized how far Albanese has come and knows how hard he has worked to get where he is now.

“He’s learning to pitch,” Holm said. “He has an incredible amount of raw talent, so it’s nice to see him starting to put the two together.”

Albanese’s fastball has reached as high as 90 mph this season, with an average in the mid-to-upper 80s.

After sweeping Montini last week, St. Francis (16-7) followed up with a win over Wheaton Academy and a sweep of Aurora Christian. Senior pitcher Jason Sullivan finished off the week with another win on the mound to improve to 6-0 with a 1.03 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 47 innings. Wednesday’s 10-1 win over Aurora Christian was the Spartans’ 10th straight victory.

The North Stars have been rolling of late, winning 12 of their past 14 games. The Bulldogs have been rolling both on the mound and with the bats of late, as has North, so it should provide for a competitive series.

Marmion had been struggling to put up runs through its first 18 games. With a 4-14 record to start the season, the Cadets were hitting only .177 as a team.

In a Suburban Christian Conference series finale April 22 against St. Francis, Marmion counted a minor victory despite an 8-5 loss, The Cadets had 13 hits against one of the better pitchers in the area in Jason Sullivan.

Since that loss, the Cadets (10-15) have won six of their past seven games.

Coach Dave Rakow expected his young team to go through a learning curve at the beginning of the season, but did not expect the hitting to turn around so quickly.

“We have had some really timely hits,” Rakow said.

“Regardless of what lineup we put out there, we have seven or eight guys that did not have any prior hitting experience on the varsity level.

The funny thing is that it didn’t gradually turn around.

It was all of a sudden and it’s great to see.”

Two large contributions for Marmion of late are the call-ups of freshmen Brandon McPherson and Chase Stanke. Since his first varsity start, McPherson has batted over .400 while hitting safely in six of eight games.

Stanke, a catcher, has played one of the toughest positions on the field, and Rakow has been pleased with his effort.

“Brandon has been just phenomenal of late,” Rakow said. “It’s almost like he’s too young to feel the pressure of playing at this level.

He’s been a big, big part of what we have been able to accomplish of late.

“As far as Chase is concerned, it’s crazy what he’s been able to do for us,” Rakow added. “The catcher position is the toughest po-

For every hot dog he wraps up or pizza slice the Kaneland baseball team’s first baseman prepares for concessions before the team faces Batavia on May 16, he’ll think about how it can help someone.

When Kaneland and Batavia play a dual senior night game at 7 p.m. that day at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, both teams will not only play a baseball game to recognize the contributions of their senior class, but will use concessions, admissions and a special donation buck-

Last year, the game’s proceeds netted $13,500 and were split three ways to help defer medical costs associated with cancer treatments for Drew Hahn, the son of Geneva coach Matt Hahn, Kaneland sophomore softball coach Brian Willis and Phill Kassinger, the father of Kaneland alumnus Kevin Kassinger.

This year, Batavia will donate its portion of the funds to aid the recovery of families affected in April by the deadly EF4 tornado that heavily ravaged Fairdale, a small town just south of Rockford.

Kaneland will make donations to assist the cancer treatments of Pat Hill, the

owner of Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville – an establishment affectionately dubbed “The Purple Store” because of its bold exterior color – as well as Bryan Dunne, the father of the Knight’s senior utility man River Dunne.

“Parents, players and members of the community are all working together,” said Hammermeister when asked about the pre game food-prep scene. “Everyone pitches in. We order pizzas.

We wrap hot dogs and load up cars to get the food over to the stadium. We spend all day thinking about the game and the grind of the season.

“But in the back of our mind as we play we are thinking about the families and

how we’ve helped out. We’ve seen firsthand how difficult [cancer] can be for a teammate to deal with a family member battling cancer. It takes its toll on an entire family. It’s great that we can help out any way we can.”

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa expects a big crowd to attend and said the senior night fundraiser has become an event that has unified Kane County schools.

“It’s great to know that we can help people in need,” Aversa said. “We set a goal every year. Last year we split the funds three ways. It helps connect the Kaneland baseball program to those people

for life. When I spoke to Geneva coach Matt Hahn he didn’t hesitate, he said his entire team would be there and help spread word about the game.

It’s great that Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland have all got a bond now. It’s a way for our players to be a part of something bigger than a game. It lets them know they are part of a community as they pay it forward.”

Being able to contribute to people in need is a satisfying bonus for Hammermeister.

“It feels great to play baseball, a game we all love, and at the same time contribute to something bigger,” Hammermeister said. “It’s amazing.”

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com SYCAMORE – With the Sycamore baseball team leading Kaneland by four runs in the top of the fifth inning, Spartans pitcher Brett Weaver was in a jam as the Knights had runners on first and third with two outs.

After Weaver forced Jacob Bachio to ground out to third to get out of the inning, he jumped off the mound in excitement as the senior pitcher got out of another crucial jam.

That was the level of excitement Weaver showed all contest as the Spartans senior tossed a complete-game gem in Sycamore’s 4-1 victory over Kaneland. The Spartans took two of three over the Knights, who came into the game in first place in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

“It was just being a competitor,” Weaver said. “You get excited when you get out of big things like that. It is always exciting, so I like to get the guys fired up like that.”

Weaver gave up one run, nine hits while striking out one. Sycamore’s defense worked wonders behind Weaver as he got out of jam after jam after jam.

Sycamore (13-8, 5-4 NI Big 12) opened the scoring in the first inning when a Nate Gross RBI single plated Jordan Wright.

The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the third inning when Kaneland (14-10, 9-3) pitcher Ryan David walked Weaver with the bases loaded and Austin Jacox came in to score.

The Knights didn’t completely struggle at the plate against Weaver, but couldn’t get the hits when they needed them.

Kaneland had a runner on base in every inning except for the fourth. The Knights stranded 13 runners in the contest.

“When you leave 13 guys on base, you are going to lose a lot of games, not just this one,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said.

“I will give credit to Weaver. He pitched a great game against us.

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – It was senior night at Geneva on Thursday and Mary Landry made sure it was an evening she’ll never forget, even when she’s a senior citizen.

The Geneva senior scored four times in the first half as the Vikings cruised to a 6-0 victory against Rosary.

“I told the girls that she’s the one getting dirty, sliding and getting very physical,” Geneva coach Megan Owens said. “She didn’t sit back and wait for the perfect ball. She got in the mix and capitalized. It was a great game for her.”

It took a little while for Landry and the Vikings (8-9-2) to get going, but she broke the scoreless tie 11:40 into the action.

“We just wanted to get go-

ing,” Landry said. “Being senior night it’s the only time for us seniors, so we wanted to get off to a good start and keep it going. I think the younger kids caught on and we had a great game.”

The way she was able to finish off the first half left little doubt that this was going to be a special night for the Vikings to celebrate. Landry took a pass and dribbled to her left to the top of the penalty box where she fired successfully with 13:56 remaining in the opening half.

Fellow senior Megan Albrecht set Landry up perfectly for her hat-trick goal with 7:41 remaining for a 3-0 lead and then she scored off a rebound with 5:04 left before the break.

“It felt so good to go out there and get the win,” Albrecht said.

“We came out at the beginning a little bit weak, a little nervous, and weren’t ready. But then we

put in some goals and really connected. It felt so good.”

Landry’s four goals were a personal best although she believes she also scored four on the junior varsity level as a freshman.

“I hadn’t done anything like this before,” she said. “It feels so good.”

Rosary (6-7-1) may have come up short, but the Royals understand they were playing against a more talented squad.

“We were a little gun shy against a bigger team, but I was happy with how we played in the second half,” Rosary coach Brian Frank said. “They’re much larger, more physical and quicker than us and there’s a lot of talent on that team. They’re probably the best team we’ve seen this year but it’s a good experience for us heading into the postseason.”

Geary game-winning hit gives Geneva win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – After having already played nine innings of level softball on April 7, and having the game called because of darkness, Geneva and West Aurora took the field yesterday, exactly one month later, to finish the suspended Upstate Eight crossover game.

Both teams stranded runners on base in the first few innings of resumed play, but it wasn’t until the bottom of the 14th inning when Kate Geary singled in Molly Wrenn that ended the game with a 4-3 win for the Vikings.

“It was a pretty cool atmosphere,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “Both teams started in the middle of their order, and you could feel the intensity right away. I’m just glad it ended on a hit and not an error or anything.”

Wrenn singled with one out in that 14th inning, before being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Plocinski.

Geary’s single ended the nearly month-long game in elation for the Vikings.

It was a big win for more than one reason for Geneva (14-6, 10-4 UEC River) because the win counts towards the

conference standings and help the Vikings with sectional seeding as both they and West Aurora are part of the Class 4A Downers Grove Sectional.

Kaitlyn Plocinski, who had started in the circle in the original meeting, finished the game to get the win for Geneva.

“We probably over-thought things from now until today,” Dierks joked. “We had been looking at the situations at where everyone was and how we would pitch to people for a long time. I’m glad to see the girls get the win today in not the typical sort of way.”

‘All About the Paws’ pet adoption event set for June KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Insurance Program Managers Group in St. Charles will host “It’s All About the Paws,” an animal adoption event, in June.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, through Friday, June 5, at the IPMG office, 225 Smith Road, St. Charles.

“It’s All About The Paws” is getting many of the local shelters involved, such as Anderson Animal Shelter, Tails Humane Society, Midwest Lab Rescue, Cat Guardians and more. All proceeds will go to the animal rescues and used for medical purposes, sup-

plies and to help keep strays off the streets, states a news release.

In an effort to raise as much money as possible, IPMG also will offer activities for guests and their pets or newly adopted pets, such as a visit from a “celebrity” guest, celebrity autographs, a K-9 unit demonstration, pet portraits and art ($5), raffle prizes, and T-shirts that will be available for purchase.

An animal nutritionist, walkers and trainers will be in attendance, as well.

Dear Abby: I represented my daughter “Stacy” and her husband as their real estate agent. When any of my children purchase a home, I waive my commission. My daughter knew I had been trying to finance a trip to South America for my husband so he could complete his “bucket list.” She gave me a cruise on one of the most expensive cruise lines and airfare to South America as a gift for helping with their home purchase.

After my husband reviewed the itinerary, he said it wasn’t the trip he had in mind and wanted to know if my daughter could change it. I was embarrassed to ask her after receiving such a gracious gift. He became indignant and said if she really wanted to give him something he wanted, she wouldn’t mind changing the trip.

I told Stacy I couldn’t accept her gift because it was too much money. My husband is now angry with me because he feels I am the person at fault for the loss of the

There’s no cure for alopecia areata, but options exist Dear Doctor K: I’m a man in my 40s, and I’ve suddenly started to lose patches of hair, but only on certain parts of my head. What’s going on?

Dear Reader: What you are describing does not sound like normal baldness, which typically affects a certain part of the head, not patches of hair loss here and there.

Instead, it sounds like you could have a condition called alopecia areata. This skin disorder causes hair loss, usually in small round or oval patches, most often on the scalp. The bald patches tend to appear suddenly and affect only a limited area. The area of bald skin looks smooth and normal. In most cases, there are no other scalp symptoms. (I’ve put a photo showing an example of alopecia areata on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

About 90 percent of the time, the hair usually grows back within one year. However, it’s common for the problem to happen again. Alopecia areata is most likely caused by an autoimmune reaction: The body’s immune system incorrectly attacks the hair follicles within the scalp. Follicles are the structures that grow hair.

There is no permanent cure

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff for alopecia areata, but there are ways to short-circuit the body’s autoimmune reaction in the scalp and encourage hair regrowth.

Your treatment will depend on several factors. These include your age, the amount of your hair loss, and your willingness to deal with any treatment-related discomfort or side effects.

Options include: • Corticosteroids injected under the skin of the bald patch.

These medicines quiet down the immune reaction. They may also be rubbed on the skin of the bald patch, although this probably is less effective. Finally, they can be given as pills or even into a vein – but then these potent medicines travel throughout the body, which can cause more side effects.

• Immunotherapy uses chemicals on the scalp to deliberately produce an allergic reaction. This is usually used in the more severe cases. Why it works is uncertain; it may disarm the turned-on immune cells.

• Topical minoxidil (Rogaine) applied to the scalp may increase hair growth. It speeds up the natural hair cycle and increases the diameter of hairs that begin to grow.

• Puva is used in the skin condition called psoriasis and may sometimes be helpful. A substance called psoralen is either rubbed on the bald patch or given as a pill, and then ultraviolet light is shined on the bald patch. The light activates the psoralen. Once activated, it can encourage the hair follicles to make more hair.

If you have mild hair loss, you may choose to simply modify your hairstyle or wear a hairpiece until the bald area fills in.

There are a large number of treatments that have been tried to cure alopecia areata. They are too new and too untested to discuss here. You should definitely ask your primary care doctor to send you to a dermatologist (skin doctor), ideally one who has considerable experience with this fairly unusual condition.

One can gain something from any book he might read. It’s one’s attitude that counts.

I do everything possible to encourage reading, especially by young people. People remain ignorant because they choose not to read books. If we would give books a chance, we could start to remedy the situation.

Earl Nightingale once said, “People seem to stop growing intellectually at age 18.” That is indeed sad! There is so much to read, so much to learn, so much to love. Dr. Wallace: I’m a 12-year-old girl who sort of likes boys, but the only problem is that the boys in my class don’t seem to like girls. All they want to do is pester us. I thought boys liked girls. Adolescence (the change from child to young adult) normally begins at age 11 or 12 for girls and two years later for boys. One of the prime traits of an adolescent is a newfound interest in the opposite sex.

That’s why you have an eye for the boys and your fellow male classmates are more interested in playing Little League baseball and Pop Warner football.

Thank goodness, it doesn’t take long for the boys to catch up with the girls. At 14, boys and girls are about equal in physical maturity and the boys begin to take notice of the girls.

North was a tad aggressive in jumping to three no-trump, but he hoped his diamond suit would provide five winners.

East does not know the strength of West’s spade suit. If West has ace-queen- or ace-jackfifth, the defenders can capture one diamond and four spades.

Here, though, that does not happen. If East returns a spade after taking the diamond ace, South makes his contract.

First, West should play highlow in diamonds to show his doubleton. Then East should hold up his diamond ace until the third round to give West a chance to make an informative discard.

If West has strong spades, he pitches a low heart or club. Here, though, he must throw a spade to warn East that that suit is not a source of tricks. Then East should shift to the heart three, which gives the defenders four more tricks to defeat the contract.
