Ex-teacher gets 6-year sentence Was convicted of possessing child pornography

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A former St. Charles School District 303 teacher recently received a six-year prison sentence for having child porn, according to DeKalb County court records.

Jerome B. McCauley, 46, of the 300 block of Grant Street in Sycamore, pled guilty on

April 24 to possessing child pornography. On Oct. 28, McCauley had an inappropriate computer image of a child younger than age 13, court records show.

In exchange for McCauley’s guilty plea April 24, prosecutors dropped Jerome B. four similar McCauley charges, according to court records.

McCauley was admitted April 25 to the state’s Northern Reception and Classification Center in Joliet, according to the Illinois Department

Police warn public about rental scams editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is warning the public of rental scams after it received a report of someone trying to rent out a house that was not for rent, police said in a news release.

The scammer reportedly targeted a house that was for sale through a legitimate real estate agent. This unknown person placed an advertisement for the residence on two popular real estate websites, Zillow and Trulia, police said.

The listing agent was contacted by people interested in renting the property, police said, noting the ads were removed.

It does not appear there were victims in this case, police said.

Police said this is not the first time they have taken this type of report. Prospective buyers should remember that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is, police said.

On that day, Sycamore police at 6 a.m. arrived with a search warrant at his home.

The search uncovered digital images and videos of child pornography, Sycamore Police Lt. Darrell Johnson said.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board on Dec. 10 accepted McCauley’s resignation, effective Dec. 3. He had worked for the district for nearly 20 years, district officials had said.

“This is a tell-tale sign that a listing may be fraudulent,” police said. “Scam artists may hijack a legitimate listing and offer it for a price that sounds like a steal.”

Scammers will typically ask for the money to be sent via a wire transfer, or – as was the case in this most recent instance – they will say they had to leave the area quickly because of family or a job and request that the money be sent overseas, police said.

“This should be considered a red flag,” police said.

Other warning signs include being asked for a security deposit or first month’s rent before meeting the owner or seeing the property, police said.

Helpers sought for Gevena city cleanup GENEVA – Volunteers are sought for a community-wide spring cleanup day set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in Geneva. Festival season approaches Events in area this summer will include carnival rides, food and more

T

he fact that temperatures are starting to warm up is another reminder that the outdoor festival season is just around the corner.

For those seeking some outdoor fun, Kane County offers plenty of activities.

Helping kick off the summer festival season is the 16th annual St. Charles Fine Art Show on May 24 and 25 and the City of St. Charles RiverFest, which will take place June 6 to 8 in downtown St. Charles.

Those who come to the St. Charles Fine Art Show will see a variety of art made by more than 100 juried artists.

The show will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 24 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 on Riverside Avenue between Main Street and Illinois Avenue in downtown St. Charles.

“Each year there are between 100 to 110 artists from all over the country, so they definitely know they are seeing some good work,” said Jamie Blair, events coordinator for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, which puts on the show.

For the second straight year, the show will feature Art Talks, where artists will discuss their works.

“We have some of the artists talk about their work and how they create it and their inspiration for what they do,” Blair said. “We had it last year, but this year they will be at their booths so they get to talk and show their work at the same time.”

The show will also feature acoustic musicians who will perform in a tent in the middle of the show.

“We’re trying to get music that blends in with the show that really just helps the atmosphere of it,” Blair said.

Another popular festival is the City of St. Charles RiverFest, which attracts up to 60,000 people a year, said Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox Inc., the

But the festival does more than just bring people to the city, she said.

“Community festivals bring everybody together,” Farris said. “In the case of Riverfest, we bill that as having something for everyone,

and we want to have families come down. Every member of the family, whether it’s a child or a grandma and grandpa, has something to do or enjoy.”

The festival, in its 32nd year, will once again feature the ever popular dragon boat races, as well as other activities such as live music; an artisan, vintage and craft market; and an ice cream eating contest.

In addition, RiverFest will feature several new activities, including the appearance of the Swifty Swine Racing Pigs.

“They are going to be in our barbecue-themed venue, which will feature all things barbecue,” Farris said.

DIGITAL EYE STRAIN A new survey reveals that 70% percent of users of desktop, laptop, TV, and cellphone screens report experiencing varying degrees of eye discomfort. Symptoms of “digital eye strain” include dry eye and blurry vision, and researchers also warn of long-term eye risks such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Much of the problem has to do with the fact that those staring at digital screens do not blink as much as they normally would. The proposed solution calls for screen users to concentrate on blinking every ten seconds and to take breaks from screen use every 20 minutes. The online survey of over 7,000 adults revealed that 60% of respondents spent at least six hours staring at their screens daily. P.S. To avoid digital eye strain, it is recommended that screen users turn down the intensity of their screens to the lowest comfortable setting.

“The general public will get to meet the creators, and they will also get to vote for their favorite sand sculpture,” Farris said.

In Geneva, Swedish Days will celebrate its 65th year when it takes place from June 17 to 22 in the city’s downtown area. The festival is billed as the “granddaddy” of Illinois festivals.

“It’s six days long, which in itself is a long festival,” said Laura Rush, communications manager for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, which puts on Swedish Days.

“Most festivals are not that long. But the amount of people it draws and the amount of activity that we have

Along with favorites like the rosemaling show – rosemaling is a form of decorative art – and the Swedish Days Parade, this year’s event will feature new activities, including some geared toward kids.

“We’re kind of saying that the kids are kicking off Swedish Days on Tuesday,” Rush said. “That day, we will have an event called Fair on the Square that will feature two hours of entertainment.”

As part of Fair on the Square, which will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Third Street, between James and Campbell streets, Istvan & His Imaginary Band will perform and The Rope Warrior will show off rope tricks.

“Those are two people we’ve never had here, but they come highly recommended,” Rush said. “And they look like a heck of a lot of fun.”

A craft beer garden also will be part of this year’s festival.

“Craft beer is a very popular concept, so we decided to capitalize on that,” Rush said.

“But also, we wanted to try something that hadn’t been done before. There will be specialty tappings each night by the three local brewers that will be participating

with their beer.”

Rush said adding new activities is what helps keep Swedish Days a popular event.

Animal Control director resigns

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The head of Kane County Animal Control resigned – effective Wednesday – according to a statement issued Wednesday afternoon by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Robert Sauceda has resigned as interim Animal Control administrator of Kane County, Illinois, effective May 7, 2014,” reads the statement. “There will be no additional comment.”

The Kane County Board had been expected next week to take action on the personnel matter involving Sauceda, Chairman Chris Lauzen told reporters early Wednesday.

Lauzen’s announcement had followed about an hour of closed-session discussion in which Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven, Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers and State’s Attorney Joe McMahon were present.

The chairman had not specified what the action might be, just that “further action will be taken up Tuesday.”

Action came earlier than expected, per the statement from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Lauzen indicated during the Wednesday meeting that McMahon was the county’s spokesperson on the issue, which the state’s attorney described as a personnel matter – not a criminal or civil matter.

County officials have not commented on the nature of the research.

Sauceda’s employment status came into question over the weekend.

Board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, said she received communication from two sources from within the department that Sauceda had to leave Animal Control on Friday and was on paid administrative leave.

Sauceda has said he cannot comment on his work status with the county.

He was made interim administrator in November at an annual salary of $65,000.

Lauzen had said someone on Jeffers’ staff would assume Sauceda’s duties during his absence. The health department oversees Animal Control.

To select the winners, the committee reviewed each student’s transcript, autobiography and recommendations from two teachers, a counselor and their Holmstad supervisor. The funds come from several sources of resident activities, including The Holmstad’s annual holiday bazaar.

Geneva High School senior Alice Paul, who also was awarded a scholarship, has

been working at The Holmstad for more than a year. She plans to study psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“It’s been a nice experience,” she said. “You get to know a lot of the residents really well.”

Other students who were awarded scholarships include Batavia High School seniors Delaney Corbitt, Jeffrey

Heise, Mitchell Kavalec and Gabriel Monarrez. Geneva High School seniors Benjamin Borowiak and Stephanie Condon also were awarded scholarships, along with West Aurora High School senior Francisco Gama.

In addition to awarding the scholarships, Holmstad residents gave all the 18 graduating seniors who worked in dining services $50 each.

BATAVIA – To Batavia High School senior Joseph Doyle, working in the dining services department at The Holmstad retirement community in Batavia has been more than just a job.

“We’re friendly with almost all the residents here,” Doyle said. “It’s been more of a close relationship than just working for them.”

Doyle was one of nine graduating seniors on Wednesday who received $1,000 scholarships from The Residents’ Association Scholarship Committee at The Holmstad. Doyle plans to study engineering at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The committee awarded $9,000 worth of scholarship money to graduating high school seniors who work in the dining services department at The Holmstad.

Since 1992, Holmstad residents have awarded $93,100 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have worked in The Holmstad’s dining services department for at least six months.

“We like to encourage them in their education and let them know that we are proud of them,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Linnea Root.

Discovery recount affirms Tegeler’s lead in judge race

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The days-long discovery recount between two judicial candidates ended Wednesday with virtually no change, a Kane County election official said.

While Kane County Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny gained a vote in one area – the mailed-in absentee ballots – she was down a vote in the paper trail of the original ballots from early voting, Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said.

Other areas that were re-evaluated remained unchanged from the original tally, keeping Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler in the lead, Fahnestock said.

“The original result appears to be confirmed, and the accuracy of the count and the integrity of the process appears to be confirmed,” Tegeler attorney Ken Shepro said.

Kostelny lost to Tegeler by seven votes, 6,220 to 6,213, in the 16th Judicial Circuit,

Tegeler and Kostelny were seeking a vacancy that will be left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6. Associate judges are appointed; circuit judges are elected.

Kostelny did not return a phone call Wednesday seeking comment.

The discovery recount of 16 Kane precincts began Monday.

The first part of the discovery recount was done late last month at the Aurora Election Commission and covered two precincts.

Pizza shop, pub to open in former Pi Pizza site

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A pizzeria and pub will open later this year in the former Pi Pizza Perfection location in downtown St. Charles, one of its owners said Monday.

Riverside Pizza & Pub, 102 E. Main St., will offer dine-in and pizza delivery as well as burgers, sandwiches, beer, wine and other drinks, said Steve Nilles, Riverside’s president and one of three co-owners.

Nilles was at the St. Charles Government Operations Com-

mittee on Monday to obtain a Class B liquor license for Riverside Pizza. The committee voted 7-2 in favor of recommending that the City Council grant a liquor license to the business. Ward 4 aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger continued their longstanding practice of voting no on liquor license requests.

Nilles said renovations at the business should be complete sometime in June and a firm opening will be determined afterward. The business will span the first and second floors, according to a standard St. Charles police

memo for the liquor license application.

Nilles and the two other owners have a combined 45 years of restaurant industry experience and are partners in other restaurants in DuPage County. They closed on the deal to purchase the former Pi Pizza property on Jan. 31.

“There’s a lot in downtown that appealed to us, mainly being close to the [Arcada] Theatre,” Nilles said.

Pi Pizza Perfection closed sometime in late 2012 after being open since at least February 2007, according to city records.

ELBURN – The Elburn Public Works Department and the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will begin its annual spring hydrant flushing Monday.

Hydrant flushing will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The crews will start on the north side of Elburn and work from the water towers outward and toward the south.

“Hydrant Flushing” signs will be posted in the vicinity of the flushing area. Residents are reminded that the water is safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing, but they may notice

rust-colored water. Public Works recommends limiting water use during hydrant flushing. If rust-colored water appears, wait until flushing has subsided, then run the cold water tap until it runs clear.

The rust-colored water may stain laundry. If this happens, keep clothes wet and treat them with a stain remover.

OPINIONS AP testing survival guide for students High school students everywhere are in the midst of the most stressful two weeks of the year – AP testing.

Sanity will be lost, tissues will be in high demand and relief will eventually be felt.

As a seasoned AP student, I have brought it upon myself to share a few tips with my fellow students that won’t necessarily help them on their tests.

1: Do some pre-AP shopping, preferably at Target.

Buy some comfy clothes (yes, yoga pants are acceptable for these two weeks!); stock up on portable junk food; and build your stock of cute pencils.

2. Study a little. Although it’s not super fun, take some practice tests, go to review sessions and ask your teacher to go over old tests/quizzes with you. The Internet is also a great place to learn from those who have previously taken your course(s).

3. If you are left-handed, like me, test out your pens and find one that smudges the least. No matter what, your hand will be covered in ink, so wash your hands a ton after your exam.

4. On a related note, perfect your most efficient handwriting. If the graders can’t read it, they can’t give you a good grade. I’ve found that if I’m rushed, my usual cursive is too messy, so I try to stick to just printing my essays.

4. On the day of the test, eat a lot, sleep a lot, layer your clothes a lot, fill out bubbles a lot, etc.

5. Stay in school! No matter if your test is in the morning or afternoon, you’ll get out of about half a day of classes.

While most kids are tempted to skip, it’s just easier to stay.

Chances are you have about four or five other real classes that are still happening. If you

6. Treat yourself to something. AP classes are like marathons – you’ve finally reached mile 26! Go out for froyo or buy that pair of shoes.

7. It’s OK if you don’t get a 5. It’s a ton of pressure to know college credit is hanging over a four-hour test, and it can freak a lot of kids out. Most colleges have placement tests you can take if you don’t get the score that you want.

8. After you’re done with your tests, party! You and your friends will surely have extra energy to burn, and it’s (finally) time to celebrate the nine months of grueling work that you did.

9. Remember that this is the end. After you’ve taken the AP test, you’re basically done with the class. Now’s your chance to sit back and watch those non-AP kids carry on doing big projects and taking hard tests.

Carbon emissions a hot topic THE WASHINGTON POST Among the injustices of human-caused climate change is that nations most responsible for filling the atmosphere with heat-trapping carbon dioxide will not face the brunt of the consequences. A belt of vulnerable, poor countries around the equator will probably be hit hardest, even though many did not enjoy the economic benefits of burning fossil fuels for energy. The first reason to fight global warming is to head off a global mess the United States is helping to create.

But the United States, the largest historical emitter, has selfish reasons for concern, too.

The National Climate Assessment, a comprehensive federal report released Tuesday, makes clear that global warming is changing a variety of conditions here

– changes that will become more severe as the average global temperature rises.

The trends are scary. The country has warmed and will continue to heat up, by between 3 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century, depending – in part – on how much the world does to slash emissions. The country is seeing more hot weather, more torrential rain and higher sea levels.

Not every effect is negative.

Farmers in the Midwest benefit from longer growing seasons, and their crops gobble up added CO2. But those effects, the assessment warns, can be offset by weather-related crop failures, not to mention climate-related costs outside the agricultural sector. The country has a lot of threatened infrastructure – seaports, airports, roads and

rails are at increased risk of flooding. The nation will probably need more electricity to reduce the impact of hotter days. Climate change could also encourage the spread of various diseases.

The bottom line is that every region of the country must both do its part to reduce carbon emissions and plan to adapt to the effects it is unlikely to avoid.

The best way to cut greenhouse gases would be through a national policy that puts a price on carbon dioxide emissions. Experts are all but unanimous on this point, but Congress has yet to respond. Local governments can enforce stronger building codes and various other measures, particularly in the absence of robust federal action.

All levels of government, meanwhile, must plan for coming changes.

The fun-packed month kicks off in Olympic fashion with the Tiny Tots Track Meet at 10 a.m. June 7.

Budding athletes ages 3 to 7 can compete in four running events and one field event at Reid Field at Thompson Middle School in St. Charles.

Events are organized by age, and – while the races are semicompetitive – all who enter are considered winners by any standard. Advance registration is required, and the fee is $12 for residents.

forget the third member of the Zimmermann family, Jonah Zimmermann, who plays young Simba. Jonah Zimmermann sits down with me to talk about his experience in the show, which is all about the fun costumes, his favorite song – “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” – and his past shows. At age 8, Jonah Zimmermann already has performed in the Mystage productions of “Alice in Wonderland,” “Willy Wonka,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin.” His favorite part of these shows is “probably the singing,” Jonah Zimmermann says.

Jack Nelson, 16, plays Mufasa and talks excitedly about this show when I get a chance to talk to him. After being involved in Mystage for eight months, he says his favorite part of the experience is “just the atmosphere and the people.”

This recurring theme of people and the tight bonds between the cast just goes to show how important community and youth programs like Mystage are to these young actors and actresses.

Sitting in the front row of the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, I watch kids race around the stage dressed as animal characters, sit quietly for makeup and practice dance moves I can only dream of completing.

This is Marquee Youth Stage: Mystage, and its new show, “King of the Pride.”

Marquee Youth Stage: Mystage is a communityyouth theater based out of St. Charles. “King of the Pride” is a show that draws from “The Lion King,” as well as traditional African music.

This particular cast ranges in age from 5 to 18. Many participate as siblings and families.

The cast gathers for pre-show notes, and I take a moment to look around at the diversity and energy in this young group. Despite their young ages, let it be known that these are professionals who are passionate and excited about their lives in the theater.

One family I speak with is the Zimmermann family.

Mary Emma Zimmermann, 11, plays Timon and sits down to talk to me while she and her sister, Olivia, get their makeup done for the show.

Mary Emma Zimmerman says her favorite thing about “King of the Pride” is that “it’s really fun and cool to meet new people all the time.”

Olivia Zimmermann, 14, sits quietly for her Zazu makeup. The two sisters have been involved in Mystage since the 2011 production of “Annie.”

Olivia Zimmermann says she and her sister auditioned, at the urging of their mother, for “Annie” on the condition that “neither of us would sing or talk.”

The girls have come a long way since that first production as they star in this new show, “King of the Pride.”

Violinist’s ‘Ship’ comes in

Wayne resident to perform in Sting musical next month

ayne resident and violinist Martha McDonnell won’t be able to accept her Bachelor of Music degree diploma in person on Sunday, June 15, when she graduates from Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

Instead, the 22-year-old fiddler will be performing with Sting in his new musical, “The Last Ship,” which opens Tuesday, June 10, at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago.

Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to McDonnell about auditioning for a spot in the musical.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand you won’t be able to accept your diploma personally because you will be in this new musical. Is that bittersweet?

Martha McDonnell: I’m going to be sad because I loved being here at Lawrence.

However, this opportunity is great. I don’t think they are going to be too upset about it.

Schelkopf: How did the audition go? Was Sting at the audition?

McDonnell: Yeah, he was there. I actually played with him. He played his guitar and sang.

And so I accompanied him and played some of the music. It was really great.

Schelkopf: To be auditioning in front of Sting, was that nerve-wracking?

McDonnell: You know, I thought I was going to be really nervous, but it was really casual and informal. It ended up being a lot of fun.

It was pretty much a jam session, which I love doing and I am really used to that format.

It wasn’t the traditional setting, where people are sitting on a panel and you play for them. It was very collaborative.

Schelkopf: How many people auditioned then?

McDonnell: I was one of three for the violin part.

Schelkopf: Did they tell you why they picked you as opposed to someone else?

McDonnell: The music in this musical is really based off of Sting’s hometown, which is in northern England. It is a very specific style of fiddling.

I’ve grown up playing Scottish fiddle, which is very closely related. And there’s also a lot of classical music influences in it and a lot of improvisation and a lot of sort of jazz things in it, too.

They were looking for someone who could do all of those things.

Schelkopf: I understand you didn’t have a written out score for the audition.

McDonnell: No. They gave me chord charts and I listened to a recording from Sting’s album. Some of the songs were on his album.

But essentially, I had to write my part.

I had to do a lot of improvisation. I went into the audition ready for anything.

Schelkopf: What did your classmates say about your whole experience?

McDonnell: They’re excited. Lawrence is a very supportive school.

Everybody has been really wonderful and really excited for me.

Schelkopf: You attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Charles. Did you get your musical bug

McDonnell: I was 5 1/2 or 6 years old when I started playing, and I started playing classical music. My parents were big classical music fans, and they were also big fiddle music fans.

I grew up listening to that music, and caught the bug early.

Schelkopf: What drew you to the fiddle in the first place?

McDonnell: From the age of 3 1/2 on, I kept saying to my parents that I wanted to play the violin. I loved listening to violin music.

And they were kind of confused because we don’t have any violinists in our family. So, I was just drawn to the fiddle music and the classical music at the same time.

Schelkopf: I understand that you might be going to New York as part of “The Last Ship.”

McDonnell: The thing is, I’m not sure at this point. They are going to see how the premiere of the show goes, and how the run in Chicago goes, and figure it out from there.

Schelkopf: Did Sting say anything to you before or after the audition?

McDonnell: Yes, he was very gracious, very nice. He was a reserved guy. He just said, “Thank you for coming.”

But I’m looking forward to working with him more in about a month.

Schelkopf: Do you think other doors might open up because of this opportunity?

McDonnell: I hope so. I’m excited to see what comes next.

GENEVA – The Geneva History Center will present “Geneva Tycoon Who Launched the NSA” with guest author Richard Munson at noon, Tuesday, May 13, at the history center, 113 S. 3rd St., Geneva.

Kane County residents may have visited Col. George Fabyan’s windmill and Japanese gardens along the Fox River in Geneva, but they may not know that Fortune Magazine ranked Fabyan among history’s 10 most interesting millionaires, states a news release.

Gilded Age tycoon Fabyan launched the National Security Agency and created the modern science research center, according to the release.

The author of the new biography “George Fabyan: The Tycoon Who Broke Ciphers, Ended Wars, Manipulated Sound, Built a Levitation Machine, and Organized the Modern Research Center,” will talk about Geneva’s famous resident. Munson, a suburban Chicago writer, will reveal how the cotton tycoon inspired a “community of thinkers” who advanced science in such diverse fields as acoustics, cryptography, genetics and physiology, the release states.

ENEVA – St. Charles East junior Austin Regelbrugge has a new top baseball memory.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth Wednesday night, the left-handed batter lined an RBI single to left field, scoring Alex Abate with the game-winning run as East knocked off St. Charles North, 3-2, at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“Probably the top one right now,” Regelbrugge said. “This is like the best field I’ve ever played on. Getting that hit, it’s at the top.”

Regelbrugge called the final offering from Kansas State-bound left-hander Cory Wright a fastball “belly button high and a little bit outside.”

“I was just looking for a fastball,” Regelbrugge said.

“He was throwing a lot of different pitches the whole game.

He did a great job and I was just like, alright, I’m going to wait for a fastball, and I got one first pitch. I stayed on top, tried to hit a line drive.”

Saints leadoff man Reid Olson and No. 3 batter Brannon Barry singled early in the inning, setting up a first and second with two outs scenario for Regelbrugge.

Wright went the distance for North, starting with three perfect innings.

“We didn’t have a whole lot of quality at-bats but in a one-run ballgame like this, a tie game, all you need are two or three quality at-bats in a row, and that’s what we got, and boom, there’s a run,” East coach Len Asquini said.

East might have ended it before going extra innings but North right fielder Anthony Lambert battled the lights to make a difficult catch while going to the ground on Erik Anderson’s drive to begin the bottom of the seventh.

Both left-handed pitchers – East’s Adam Eck and Wright – breezed through the early innings but the North Stars and Saints offenses each found their footing in the fourth inning.

East (16-8, 12-6 UEC River) matched that output with two in the bottom half, aided by a

pair of North errors.

A bunt single by Alex Abate and an RBI single from Regelbrugge were part of the inning and the Saints’ first hits of the night.

Eck pitched seven innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits, striking out eight and walking two.

“Adam Eck threw super out there for seven innings and Kyle Cook came in [for the eighth] and did a nice job there, got himself into a little jam and worked his way out of it,” Asquini said.

Riley Coomes, Kuczek and freshman Zach Mettetal each had two hits for North, which was without coach Todd Genke because of his ejection in Tuesday’s series-opening North Stars loss.

The teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game series today at North.

“We were in a situation with Batavia [winning the first two but losing the third],” Asquini said. “We’re hoping we can put the finishing touches on the series tomorrow.”

Geneva and St. Charles East will meet in a rare time slot for a high school soccer match – a Friday night.

The Saints are due to visit Burgess Field in Geneva at 6:30 p.m. Friday. East coach Paul Jennison said the rivals tried to pick a marquee time for the match and are hoping for a strong turnout.

The match will determine whether East (4-0-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) ties St. Charles North (5-0-1 UEC River) for the conference championship. The North Stars are already through with their conference schedule.

East and North tied, 1-1, April 22. The Saints fell to the Vikings, 1-0, earlier in the season but that was at the Rose Augsburg-Drach Invitational, not a conference matchup.

While playing on a Friday night lends the matchup some extra pizzazz, Jennison said his goal is for the four Tri-Cities girls teams to move toward playing a doubleheader together, as has been the case on the boys side.

Jennison hopes that can become a reality in the next year or two.

Elsewhere among the Tri-Cities teams, third-seeded Geneva faces Elk Grove Village in a Geneva Regional semifinal May 20 while fourth-seeded St. Charles East faces a regional semifinal against 13th seeded West Chicago, also to be played May 20, in a regional hosted by the Wildcats.

In Class 2A, top-seeded Kaneland and second-seeded Rosary are again on a collision course, with both teams slotted in a regional to be contested on the Royals’ home field. Kaneland opens with Rochelle in a regional

semifinal May 20, while Rosary will match up with Illinois Math and Science Academy on May 21.

Until we meet again?

Geneva and St. Charles North have plenty of regular season and postseason history in recent years, with most of those matches being tightly contested.

That wasn’t the case last week when North handled Geneva decisively, 4-1, but Vikings coach Megan Owens still thinks the game could prove beneficial.

“It’s good to play North in the regular season,” Owens

said after the game. “We learn a lot from playing them.

I think it can only help us improve in the long-run.

“It’s a little tough to swallow tonight but hopefully we can learn from it. You’ve got to learn from your mistakes.

Nobody’s perfect. As long as we learn from it, we’re fine, but that’s they key – making sure we learn from it.”

North and Geneva wouldn’t meet in the postseason until a potential sectional championship match at Conant.

North could face St. Charles East in a sectional semifinal.

Batavia won a title in its bracket at the Tournament of Champions, while North beat a pair of out-of-state foes to advance to the championship game before losing to an elite foe from Missouri, 2-1. It was North’s sixth straight berth in the tournament final.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars players dined on brisket and flipped between Major League matinees Wednesday afternoon, absorbing a rare home loss much as they might savor a victory.

About the only missing ingredient was postgame clubhouse music, but Wisconsin muted the need for that with a 5-3 victory that ended the Cougars’ 11-game winning streak at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Still the best team in the Midwest League at 23-10 – including a 16-3 mark at home – Kane County chewed the sunny reality of the season’s first month in relative silence largely because that’s what protocol demands.

“You live and you learn and you’re not going to win every game, but it’s being able to battle and just put yourself in position to win,” third baseman David Bote said. “We’ve put ourselves in position to win, had that chance today.”

Wisconsin (14-18) kept the Cougars from sweeping the series and a six-game homestand as reliever Tyler Alexander escaped a first-and-third, oneout situation in the bottom of the ninth.

The Timber Rattlers played small ball in the top half to score a pair of go-ahead runs against righty Michael Wagner in his Cougars debut.

Most spectators had scattered by the time Alexander recorded the final out, but those who remained saluted the Cougars, who are nearly halfway to the club’s 2013 total of 33 home wins.

“Last year, it felt like we couldn’t buy a win at home.

This year, completely different story, obviously,” righthander Justin Amlung said.

“Winning in front of the home fans and saying that this is a different ballclub than last year, hopefully, they get excited for us.”

Pitching before a season-high and schoolkid-saturated crowd of 7,433 on the sixth Ozzie’s Reading Club matinee of the season, Amlung could relate to many in the stands.

Ever figure you’d present a project later in the period, just not right away? That was Amlung. Slated to work in relief for the eighth time this season Wednesday, he learned this week he’d be filling in for scheduled starter Juan Paniagua, who was visiting his ailing grandmother in his native Dominican Republic.

Amlung threw 72 pitches in a season-high six innings and earned a no-decision. He never had gone beyond four innings in 2014, but used a sinking, two-seam fastball to work around homers from Wisconsin’s David Denson and Clint Coulter to scatter three runs, four hits and five strikeouts.

Amlung (2.45) and lefty reliever Nathan Dorris (1.59), who also pitched with the Cougars last season, boast two of the pitching staff’s top six ERAs and have combined for seven victories.

“They did a great job last year and are doing the same thing this year,” manager Mark Johnson said. “Picked up where they left off, and that’s all you can do. No matter if you repeat or not, you’ve got to do what you can do to succeed and put up numbers, and sooner or later, it’ll pay off and spots will be open for you.

You’ve got to keep doing what you do.”

Bote went 2 for 3 and first baseman Jacob Rogers went 2 for 4 for the Cougars, who will look to recapture their home vibe after a six-game trip to Burlington and Beloit.

“You just look back and see what we did wrong,” Bote said, “see the things that beat you.”

A 19th round pick in June’s draft, Remillard batted .373 (19 for 51) with a home run, six doubles and 15 RBIs during the month – his first in professional ball. On Wednesday, the first part of those words runs true, anyway, as most among the season-high crowd of 7,433 were schoolkids playing organized hooky for an Ozzie’s Reading Club matinee.

The previous 2014 attendance high was 6,331 for Friday’s “Star Wars Night” game against Burlington.

Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said more than 100 busloads of students attended Wednesday’s game.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST CHARLES – For the most part, the St. Charles North and Geneva softball teams kept the ball in the stadium on Knocking Cancer Out of the Park day Wednesday.

Both teams relied on singles, sacrifices and stolen bases to push runners across the plate.

North was more successful at it, however, in beating the Vikings, 7-2, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Only Annika Radabaugh’s bases-empty homer in the top of the second left the park. Her shot went over the fence just to the right of the 210-foot sign in center field, giving the Vikings their first run of the day and tying the game at 1.

The North Stars, who scored a run in the first on a walk, fielder’s choice and a Geneva error, retook the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second in a similar way. Their second run came on a walk, a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

Geneva (13-8, 6-5 UEC River) retied the game at 2 in its half of the fourth on three consecutive singles.

North (15-6, 11-2) finally broke the game open in the fourth.

“I thought it was a matter of time,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “We had at-bats [in the first three innings] that were thinking at-bats. We want to adjust our approach at each at-bat and remember

the sequence they attacked us and adjust. I just wanted to make sure that we didn’t give them opportunities because they are a good team and they will take advantage of them.”

The team made the most of a walk and five singles off relief pitcher Emily Plocinski to score four runs and take a 6-2 lead.

“I thought we played pretty well [Wednesday]. The fourth inning made a big difference in the game, but I thought we had good swings the whole day,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “They got some people on right away against us in that inning and we were sort of on our heels for the whole inning there.”

Plocinski replaced starting pitcher Rachel Fanella, who threw for the first three innings.

“That’s been our strategy this week to switch up halfway through,” Dierks said.

“We have a busy week.”

The North Stars scored their last run in the sixth on a Delaney Olinger double, the only other extra base hit of the game.

Sabrina Rabin went the distance for North for her 10th win against five losses. The right hander scattered seven hits and issued only one walk over seven innings.

“I thought she got stronger as the game went on,” Poulin said. “The ball started to jump in the fifth and sixth innings.”

The game, which was delayed more than an hour by lightning, was also a fundraiser for breast cancer research.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON – The Burlington Central softball team mixed solid pitching and clutch hitting to defeat Genoa-Kingston, 5-1, on Wednesday and set up a Big Northern Conference East showdown against visiting Marengo today.

Central (13-6, 8-1 BNC East) is looking to avenge an earlier 4-2 loss to the league-leading Indians.

Emily Kisch earned the win in the circle, scattering one run, three hits, eight strikeouts and one walk.

Bekah Harnish and Kelly Wiater both had two hits.

Harnish homered and drove in two runs.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber So with success on the track helping her easily adjust to every new surrounding, Heuer said there’s really not that much difference between all the different places she’s been.

“You still have to run your butt off every day and do all your work, do all your races, get your homework done. It’s about the same, any school you go to it’s going to be a balancing of two things,” Heuer said.

“It’s kind of interesting seeing the different ways that people coached. For example, Geneva was pretty intense, and then I moved to North and that was not quite as intense.

It’s fun to meet new people and meet new coaches and see what they’re doing, too.”

Heuer is at NIU now because she’s closer to home, and she has plenty of goals for the future, from improving times on the track to heading into future studies of occupational therapy. But whatever the future holds, she seems to have that one constant always going for her.

“Track has been really fun in that it gives you something interesting to do you can really focus on,” she said.

Meghan Heuer is no stranger to moving around.

She went to three different high schools. She’s been to two colleges. But all along there’s been one constant: running.

Heuer started running cross country in the seventh grade, and years later, she’s still running as a track and field athlete at Northern Illinois University. Her journey through secondary education took her from high school in Minnesota to Geneva High School to St. Charles North High School for her senior year.

Then it was on to Kansas State Meghan University beHeuer fore a transfer back to the Land of Lincoln and NIU. But all the while, running has been a mainstay.

“I’ve been doing it since the seventh grade. It’s been awhile since I’ve been doing it,” Heuer said. “It is a nice constant. It’s not just a sport, it makes you feel good, you like it. It’s something you like to do.”

While she might see it as something she likes to do, Heuer is pretty good, too.

Wherever she goes, records start falling. She holds a school record at Kansas State, and she has been a member of several record-breaking relay teams since arriving in DeKalb. In February, she set a school record in the indoor mile (4:51.35). Just last month, she was part of a team that broke the 4x800-meter relay record by more than 20 seconds.

The writer-director remembers saying that to his prospective star as a way of convincing him to take part in his experimental project, “Locke,” a film that takes place in real time as the title character makes a fateful 85-minute drive. “You’ll only feel a tiny prick,” Hardy chimes in playfully.

Knight and Hardy met for the first time in November 2012 to discuss another film, but by February of the following year, they were filming “Locke.” “Tom loves theater and challenges and mad ideas, so I went and wrote it with Tom in mind,” Knight says.

The “mad idea” was making a film consisting solely of a man fielding phone calls while driving. Save for some exterior shots, the camera would remain focused on Hardy’s face. “There’s something about phone calls where people are saying one thing but their faces are saying something else, which is such a gift,” Knight enthuses. “It makes you look clever. Just trying to imitate the surreal way that people talk and the way that they jumble everything up and then just one line of poetry and then jumble everything up again and say the opposite of what they mean.”

Hardy first caught Knight’s (and most of the country’s) attention as Eames, the quick-witted forger with a biting sense of humor in the 2010 sci-fi thriller “Inception,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. “I was terrified because it was Leo. You can’t battle against somebody like that for screen time,” Hardy recalls.

“I thought, I’m just going to give him whatever he needs, and it took a lot of a load off.” He learned that the more an actor gives of himself to other actors and the audience, the better he looks. He extrapolates that thought to life itself.

Hardy puffs an e-cigarette as he speaks, while sporting a T-shirt that exposes his several tattoos. He also regularly flashes a boyish grin, and he draws on this duality of hard and soft to craft characters that are difficult to ignore. “There’s no particular formula or process for me. I do like to mix some ‘Taxi Driver’ with Disney World,” the

36-year-old English actor says of his process. He has particular disdain for the word “thespian,” and the idea of method acting bores him, though he is known to deeply inhabit some of his roles.

During a press junket for 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” Hardy remembers slipping into his villainous character of Bane to respond to an inane question about whether he could play a character with both intellectual and thuggish qualities.

“All I can think right now, all I hear is you calling me an idiot,” he says, re-enacting the encounter in his regally British Bane accent. “I want to come across the table, grab you by the throat, and throw you through the f------ window, but I’m not going to do it, and I think that answers your question.”

It was a brilliant and sharp retort, albeit one the actor ended up apologizing for.

“That’s the thing, though, when you ask someone to have no skin and be an ambassador as well,” he says of that moment. “In acting, nothing’s sacred.

You say and think whatever, but when it comes to interviews, it’s like ‘Let’s just talk like how we should sound.’”

Words are particularly important to Ivan Locke, Hardy’s latest character.

He’s the foreman of a building site that’s

about to receive an important concrete pour when viewers first meet him. We soon learn that he’s also dealing with an unraveling marriage.

“It is the end of the world for him, but he doesn’t have a superhero suit, and he’s [out of luck],” Hardy relates. It’s clear he has a lot of empathy for Locke, whom he chose to portray with a Welsh accent to emphasize the care and calm of the words he hopes will get him through his journey. “You have to get from A to B. You have to put out a lot of fires, and you’re not allowed to lose your [mind].

You have to be really normal because this is an everyday man’s crisis.”

There’s a moment when Locke quips that he’s “waiting for Godot,” and Knight’s writing conjures the spare and existential space Becket toiled in. The film inevitably will draw comparisons to the theater because of its intimate focus, but “Locke” is uniquely cinematic.

Light figures prominently, punctuating dialogue with bright flashes and mellow hues that convey mood as it seeps into the viewer’s psyche. Knight wanted to make a film “where you could get rid of the sound and just watch it,” and he credits director of photography Haris Zambarloukos for realizing this vision. “He is a hero. He rediscovered a reflective device that hasn’t been used since the ’50s to enhance the amount of reflection we’d get on the screen.”

The floodlights in his face forced Hardy to focus more intently on the script, which was projected on a screen in front of him. “That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a writer’s absolute word,” he says.

“Right up to the letter, to the full stops.”

Instead of feeling restricted though, Hardy (who has a background in theater and was directed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in Brett C. Leonard’s “The Long Red Road” at the Goodman Theatre) relished the experience and the sleight-of-hand elements that made everything come together: He was reading the script while pretending to drive a car that’s rigged to a truck, the driver of which is on the road while Hardy follows the script and takes phone calls from the other actors, who are situated in a nearby hotel room – artificial elements that meld together to produce searing realism.

Or as Hardy puts it: “No one left the script; no one left the road. No acting required.”

Sufferers of Tourette syndrome need understanding Dear Doctor K: My grandson was recently diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. Could you explain what this is? What can I do to help him?

Dear Reader: Twenty years ago, I got into a cab at the hospital, heading for the airport. The driver was a man in his 30s who liked to talk. About every 30 seconds as he talked, he would clear his throat. It was not a gentle sound – you could have heard it several hundred yards away. Also, every few minutes his head would suddenly jerk to the right side.

He asked me what I did, and I told him I was a doctor. He asked what kind of doctor, and I said I practiced internal medicine.

He asked what that meant, and I replied that I took care of adults, made diagnoses and prescribed treatments but didn’t do surgery.

He asked: “Like what kind of diagnoses?” I replied: “Like, do you have Tourette syndrome?”

He jammed on the brakes, pulled the car to the side of the road and turned his head to look back at me. “Where were you when I needed you?” He then told me that as a child he had been placed in institutions for the “insane” because of his condition. It had taken him 20 years, and multiple doctors, before the diagnosis

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a disorder of the nervous system that often begins in childhood.

The major symptom is tics – sudden, brief, involuntary or semi-voluntary movements (motor tics) or sounds (vocal tics). For example, a child may blink his eyes, shrug his shoulders or grunt, bark, repeat words (sometimes foul words) or, like the cab driver, repeatedly clear his throat.

Tics usually begin around age 7. Motor tics usually come on first; vocal tics start later. Tic activity tends to peak from about age 8 to age 12. Understandably, children with TS often have feelings of embarrassment, low self-esteem and self-criticism.

Traditional psychotherapy and a different type of “talk therapy” called cognitive behavioral therapy can be effective. One technique is called habit-reversal training. The therapist teaches the person to use a specific muscle movement or behavior

to compete with the tic. Other techniques are positive reinforcement, relaxation training and self-monitoring.

Various medications can help reduce (if not eliminate) the unusual symptoms. Doctors generally first prescribe drugs with fewer side effects. Examples include a blood pressure-lowering drug, an anti-anxiety drug and an anti-seizure medication. If these drugs are not effective enough, antipsychotic drugs (even though TS is not a psychosis) may help, but may have more side effects.

Researchers are testing a treatment known as deep brain stimulation (DBS) for severe cases that don’t respond to other treatments. DBS involves surgery to place small electrodes into brain areas thought to be involved in generating TS tics.

You can help your grandson by offering your unconditional love and support. Reassure him that tics often decrease in severity through the teen years.

They may even disappear by his early 20s.

This guy and I have been talking nearly every day at school, and it’s obvious that he likes me. One day I asked him if he had any romantic interest in my girlfriend and he said no, but that she was just a good friend of his.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in seventh grade and get excellent grades. I love animals and want to be a veterinarian after I finish my education. In my social studies class, my teacher designated me as a teacher’s aide.

This means that I do errands and help in the class by sometimes grading student tests that have true or false answers. And sometimes I help with the bulletin boards after school.

I really like helping the teacher, but sometimes other kids call me names like “teacher’s pet” and even “traitor.”

Not necessarily at the bridge table, though. Sometimes, for example, drawing trumps early will lose a contract. And, of course, occasionally not drawing trumps soon enough can be fatal.

Which applies in this deal?

South is in four spades, and West leads the heart king.

Note North’s four-spade rebid.

It promises at least four-card support and denies a first- or second-round control. South is implying that he has (at least) nine winners when he opens two clubs and rebids two spades.

North hopes that his trumps will provide a 10th trick. (Yes, South’s hand is a minimum. Some experts would rebid two no-trump to limit the hand. But that would not work well here, because North would surely pass, and the contract would fail.)

Given that the trumps are 3-1, South has five losers: one spade, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. The black-suit losers are unavoidable, so declarer must ruff his low red-suit cards in the dummy.

The right play is to win the first trick, to cash exactly one top trump, then to play off the three top diamonds, discarding dummy’s remaining heart. Next, South ruffs the heart seven in the dummy, returns to his hand with a trump, and ruffs his diamond five – mission accomplished.

Note that if declarer begins with both of his top trumps, he will be stranded in the dummy after the first ruff. West can get in with his club ace and draw dummy’s last trump, leaving South with a fourth loser.
