Being a student, employee and team member On Sunday, I will turn 18 years old. I’ve had a job since I was 16. Three weeks after my 16th birthday, I started my first day at Wendy’s.

For me, getting a job as soon as I was eligible was more about gaining independence from my parents than anything. Instead of relying on my parents for money, I could use the money that I earned how I wished.

My first day on the job was a nerve-wracking one.

Wendy’s was the first job that reviewed my application and, therefore, became my first job. By the end of my minuscule three-hour shift, my feet were sore, and I smelled like french fries.

Many high-schoolers find themselves in a similar situation as mine. After the summer ended, I had to balance having a job with school and extracurricular activities. For some stu-

In the fall, not only was I a full-time student, but I also was involved in our school’s marching band. Practice was directly after school until 5:30 p.m., and then I would work from 6 to 9 p.m. and still have to go home and finish my homework.

To be honest, I don’t know how I did it or how I kept my sanity, but knowing I had the freedom to do the things I wished without depending on my parents was too sweet to give up.

the theater and has worked there ever since. For an indebted college student, this was a stroke of good fortune for Aaron.

To any high-schooler debating on applying for a job: Do it. I was an AP student who took many honors classes, had a perfect GPA, and also was involved in music and theater. Though I can tell you at times I was stressed out, the skills I learned from working are invaluable. More importantly, they helped me mature into the adult I am today.

Now, I’m approaching the end of my senior year at Batavia High School, and I have been reflecting on how having a job has affected me.

Overall, I’m glad I worked. It allowed me to spend my time doing something productive, manage my time and gave me the independence I didn’t often find at home. The time management skills I was forced to learn will come in handy when I’m at college, and my experience in the workforce will benefit me when I look for a full-time job.

I also know people who have gained workplace opportunities from their work while in high school.

Worker tests positive for tuberculosis at RR Donnelley in STC

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An employee of a business in St. Charles has tested positive for tuberculosis, or TB, a Kane County Health Department spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

An employee who works at the RR Donnelley St. Charles campus near and along Kirk Road had the positive TB test a couple weeks ago and hasn’t been back to work since, said Tom Schlueter, the health department’s communications coordinator.

“We’re out there testing employees, doing our job to make sure all the other employees are safe,” Schlueter said.

About 200 people Tuesday and Wednesday at the company’s St. Charles location received a tuberculin skin test from the health department, Schlueter said. Health department staff will review the tests today and Friday.

As of Wednesday, Kane County has had five reported community TB cases so far this year. The case at RR Donnelley does not count as one of the five because the employee is a DuPage County resident, Schlueter said.

Messages left Wednesday afternoon at RR Donnelley’s St. Charles campus and with a company spokeswoman

Tom Schlueter Kane County Health Department’s communications coordinator were not immediately returned.

“The company has been wonderfully cooperative,” Schlueter said. “It worked to find out which locations in the business the employees might have had contact [with the patient].”

The TB case at RR Donnelley is not related to a TB outbreak at Hesed House in Aurora, Schlueter said.

Over the past few years, there were 43 Kane County-related TB cases at Hesed House, Schlueter said. The most recent case was diagnosed in August, and there are no longer any patients receiving treatment as a result of the Hesed House cases, he said.

Tuberculosis is a disease that can affect the lungs and any other part of the body, and is spread from one person to another through the air, according to the health department’s website.

“TB is very treatable,” Schlueter said.

Residents encouraged to donate goods While dropping a letter in the mail Saturday, residents are encouraged to make a deposit of nonperishable goods to benefit the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association’s 23rd annual nationwide food drive.

For the 23rd year, United Way of Central Kane County will be assisting in this national effort, as well as employees of the U.S. Postal Service and the AFL-CIO. Local beneficiaries from this year’s drive include The Salvation Army, which distributes the food to the Hosanna Food Pantry.

Local residents interested in participating can do so by placing nonperishable food items next to their mailbox by 9 a.m. Saturday, or by volunteering to pick up and sort food in St. Charles. The St. Charles post offices are located at 2600 Oak St. or at 616 E. Main St. Personal care items and pet food also will be accepted.

Drop-off sites are at both post offices, with the east location accepting only until noon.

Attendees will learn about the natural and cultural impact of plants species that can grow in gardens.

After an informative discussion, participants will be provided with a pot, materials and plants to create their own arrangement to take home.

The term “glaucoma” refers to a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. While increased pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure) may be responsible for the nerve damage, some people with glaucoma have normal eye pressure.

When glaucoma is “primary,” the exact cause is not known. However, it is referred to as “secondary glaucoma” when it is caused by some other eye condition or disease. If not treated early, all glaucomas can lead to vision loss.

P.S. Secondary glaucoma, which may be responsible for up to ten percent of all glaucoma cases, usually affects one eye and not both eyes.

COVER STORY ‘RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD’ Stombres treated to surprise concert from former students

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jim Stombres just wanted to direct a band.

But if the horde of alumni who surprised him Tuesday night during his final concert with St. Charles North High School was any indication, his decades-long career became so much more.

Former students from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s populated the audience and took over the stage after performances by current students.

As a video of graduates from Batavia, Naperville North and St. Charles North high schools played, thanking the retiring teacher for his contribution to their lives, the alumni band members arranged themselves in darkness and, once revealed, left him speechless.

“You got me. I am absolutely speechless. I don’t know what to say,” Stombres said, emotion in his voice.

“You talk about what I did for you, but you don’t know what you’ve done for me. I just wanted to teach a band, and then all of a sudden all these people come into my life.”

“It might not be the best concert you ever heard,” Hutter said before the surprise, “but it will definitely be the concert that means the most.”

Stombres’ wonderment didn’t seem to wane throughout the surprise. At one point he said he kept noticing more faces every time he looked around.

“I just can’t believe you’re all here,” he said.

Kendra Barrett Gohr, a 1995 Naperville North grad who spearheaded the event,

described Stombres as a “modern-day Mr. Holland” who always treated his students like individuals.

A lot of people dropped everything to attend his retirement farewell, she said. She said she initially thought 50 would participate in the alumni band, but the total was closer to 110 and included many from out of state.

Vickie Bertini, Batavia Class of 1987, was among the out-of-state alumni, having traveled from Phoenix.

Stombres is among the four

teachers who stood out in her educational career, she said, noting he never gave up on his students.

“He expected more out of us than we did,” Bertini said, adding that one-on-one practice sessions with him helped boost her confidence.

Annie Korth, St. Charles North Class of 2011 and recent Loyola University graduate, said a lot of her favorite high school memories were from band.

“He played a big part in making [me] who I am with

music and my love for music,” she said. “I wouldn’t have loved it as much as I do, and appreciate it as much as I do, if it weren’t for him.”

As another show of appreciation to their former teacher, the alumni pooled their money for a GoFundMe account, which had accrued more than $5,500 by Tuesday.

They told Stombres to spend it as he wished.

“Boy, I feel like the richest man in the world,” he said, “and not just because of the $5,500.”

Batavia to celebrate Flag Day next month

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia plans to kick off a year-round celebration of Flag Day with an ice cream social on June 14, which is Flag Day. Flag Day has special significance for Batavia and Aurora.

Bernard J. Cigrand, the “father of Flag Day,” was a resident of Batavia and later, Aurora. He campaigned to establish a day to celebrate the adoption of the stars and stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. Cigrand was born in 1866 in Waubeka, Wisconsin, and moved to Batavia in 1912, according to Batavia Depot Museum officials. Cigrand practiced dentistry in a house he built on South Batavia Avenue.

In 1885, he started his campaign, writing newspaper and magazine articles in support of the idea of a Flag Day. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 issued a proclamation calling

for a nationwide Flag Day observance. But it was not until 1949, 17 years after Cigrand’s death, that Congress designated June 14 as Flag Day. Cigrand moved to Aurora in 1932 and died of a heart attack shortly afterward.

To celebrate Flag Day, the Batavia ACCESS Committee and the Fireworks Committee plan to hold an ice cream social on June 14 at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

The event will include musical entertainment, including an appearance by the Batavia Community Band, he said.

In addition, a flag carried by Schielke and other city officials during the recent Loyalty Day Parade will be hung along the Batavia Government Center as part of the celebration.

“I’m excited about it,” Schielke said during Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting.

“This could be a memorable, commemorative occasion.”

A t tendees can see Civil War cavalry troops conducting such exercises as uniform and weapons inspections, firing drills, saber drills and marching drills.

“This is part of what is required to be a member of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment,” Capt. Jeff Johnson said in the release.

“There are specific requirements each man must meet in maintaining his equipment and uniform, in firing his weapon, and more,” he said.

“This is representative of life as lived by the original members of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War.” The event’s location was recently rededicated by the city of St. Charles as Camp Kane, where 1,100 volunteers from the greater Fox Valley area were trained in 1861 in preparation for battle, according to the release. They fought in several major battles, including Antietam, Gettysburg and Bull Run. “We encourage people to

come out for the day and bring a picnic lunch, or come out for a couple of hours,” Camp

Kane Heritage Foundation Board President Kim Malay said in the release. “There is

a lot to see and do, and an opportunity to talk with the soldiers and learn what life was

like for them.”

conditions, it encompasses the same conditions home gardeners would be familiar with. If there are backyard spots that are too wet, Kramer can point to shrubs and flowers that will do well in those conditions.

Too dry or shady? Ditto.

“Sadly, native plants are often dismissed as weeds,” Kramer said. With their easy care requirements, tolerance for a wide range of conditions from flooding to drought, and long-lived ability to come back year after year, they are anything but.

“Native plants can be easily inserted into home gardens,” Kramer said. “Plant them in among your hosta and shrubs. They can be easily integrated.”

The Native Plant Demonstration Garden was started behind the Pottawatomie Community Center in the early 1990s. Armed with some documents that recalled the days when the land along the Fox River was dotted with vacation cottages for people coming out from Chicago, and augmented by a specific site plan drawn up for the demonstration garden, the naturalist department team went about establishing a garden that would help restore the riverfront and encourage people to appreciate the many attributes of native plants.

“We do attract a lot of visitors,” Kramer said. Benches and picnic tables invite guests to sit and stay awhile, bring a lunch or a cup of coffee and just listen to the sounds of the birds flitting from tree to tree or perhaps catch sight of a hummingbird feeding at one of the flowers.

“It’s a beautiful spot,” Kramer said.

Committee moves resolution supporting reform to full board Jean Pierce of the League of Women Voters challenged the committee about the paragraph outlining residents’ fears of rising taxes, the departure of businesses and their neighbors to other states, and the deterioration of school buildings and state roads.

“Where is your proof about these fears?” she asked.

Other members of the public spoke in support of taxing the wealthy and collective bargaining rights and said union members want a fair living to buy a house and support a family.

“Unions help make the middle class strong,” Elburn resident Marcia Little said.

Lauzen and board attorney Patrick Kinnally tried to keep the speakers on topic. Kinnally also stepped in when the crowd showed excessive emotion with cheers and name-calling, stating he didn’t “want hooting and hollering.”

The committee forwarded the resolution to the County Board, which next meets at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday in Building A on the Kane County Government Center campus in Geneva.

GENEVA – A standing-room-only crowd yet again packed the Kane County Board Room on Wednesday morning for another discussion about the county’s resolution to support reform in Springfield.

As he said last week, Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stressed that Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal wasn’t on the agenda.

“We want to make sure we stay focused,” he said as he opened the floor for public comment.

Members of the public, however, said the two were related.

“We are here, and I don’t think it’s a secret to anyone here today, why your parking lot’s a big field ever since the governor’s turnaround agenda hit Kane County,” said Ruby Robinson, a state employee and president of AFSCME Local 2833.

She said many were in attendance to show “just how much this agenda has upset your citizens here in Kane County.”

Teska Associates will prepare TIF plan for the West Town area Batavia aldermen approved $14,300 contract with firm

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen on Monday approved a $14,300 contract with Teska Associates Inc. to prepare a tax increment financing redevelopment project and plan for the city’s West Town area.

City officials continue to explore the idea of creating a TIF district to improve the West Town area, which is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends about two blocks north and south.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen, and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

will include recommended boundaries and land uses, potential redevelopment sites and infrastructure needs and other public improvements. Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston had previously told aldermen that a comprehensive study of the subject area shows the area would qualify for a conservation area TIF designation.

The area is comprised of industries still in operation and abandoned buildings, such as a vacant gas station.

Master Cast, which supplies permanent mold aluminum castings, was at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and First Street. The building was demolished after being heavily damaged in a fire last year.

The West Town area also is comprised of homes and The Elms restaurant.

The city’s comprehensive plan calls for a mix of uses in the area, including higher density, single-family uses, as well as industrial uses, city officials said.

Accused Elburn police officer on unpaid leave

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – An Elburn police officer, who has been charged with 21 counts of sexual abuse, has been placed on unpaid leave.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said the officer, David L. Wright, 53, of Campton Hills, has been on unpaid leave since May 1.

David L. Wright was Wright charged April 27 with sexually assaulting a child – a child he knew – over a period of years, from March 2005 to April 2015.

He faces 10 counts of predatory criminal assault, each a Class X felony, and 11 counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the child was younger than 13 when the assaults began. A news release from the state’s attorney’s office indicated Wright would face a sentence of between six and 30 years on each Class X count and four to 15 years on each Class 1 count. Bail was set at $500,000.

Initially, Wright had been placed on paid administrative leave. As of late Wednesday afternoon, Wright remained in the Kane County Jail.

ST. CHARLES – Members of a St. Charles Park District program Tuesday will push for a smoke-free parks ordinance for the city, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

The members, which are from the park district’s STC Underground Teen Center, will appear before the St. Charles Park Board at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Avenue, St. Charles, to advocate for the smoke-free parks ordinance, the release states.

The teens at the center in December conducted a survey to determine community support for a smoke-free parks policy. A majority of the 116 surveys completed showed strong support for smoke-free parks, according to the release.

Prom’s the word Prom. Or as any girl would call it: a night of applying spray after spray of mega-hold hairspray, posing for awkward couple photos, wearing extravagant dresses and dancing in painful heels.

After months of preparation, I am completely ready to attend my senior prom this weekend. A few weeks back, I explained my quest for finding the perfect prom dress. Now, I am actually counting down the days until the roaring extravaganza occurs.

I just want to let you all know that I did find nude-colored prom shoes to compliment my dress; my purse has been bought; nail polish decisions have been made; and I actually figured out how my hair is going to be styled. Truly, I have no idea how I got all of these tasks completed without going insane, but nonetheless, my prombuying journey is over and done with.

All the items on my prom checklist have been crossed off, even after believing there was no way that I would get everything ready before the big day.

The thought of waltzing around in my beautiful gown makes me anticipate the night even more. Let me be clear with this; this Saturday is my senior prom. This is the day that every teen in a romantic comedy film states as the best experience of their adolescence. Thus, you can imagine how I am curious as to how the night is going to unfold in real time and not just through a TV screen like I’m used to observing.

Prom is the night where girls can transform from paupers to princesses, with their hair all curled to perfection and their nails all flawlessly done to match their dress. On this day, girls

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina can be overly demanding about how precise their makeup needs to look and actually get away with acting like a bit of an overdramatic diva. We must remember prom only arrives once (unless you go as a junior, too).

And of course, after prom comes to a close at the elegant banquet hall and everyone departs, there is of course the “after prom” that continues the nonstop party. On the Monday after the weekend of prom, there is even the legendary “senior skip day.” For those of you who do not know what this day is, it winds up being a day off of school for many senior students. On this day, seniors celebrate the fact that the “end is near” for high school.

For instance, some people travel to lake houses: others may spend the day at Six Flags Great America and so on. What’s hilarious is that even some teachers of seniors understand the importance of this day.

Although, my friends and I still are putting final touches on our senior skip day destination. Whatever we decide, it’s going to be one thrill of a day.

Certainly, I am ready to dance prom night away with my peers, indulge in delicious banquet hall food and celebrate the end of my senior year in style.

Huckabee’s the down-home GOP candidate THE WASHINGTON POST Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee entered the GOP presidential race Tuesday.

Although he’s not viewed as a top contender, Huckabee has proven himself a formidable candidate among the GOP base’s many evangelical Christians, winning the 2008 Iowa caucuses despite being phenomenally outspent by Mitt Romney, and from there taking seven other states before ultimately losing to John McCain. Since then, the former Baptist preacher has cultivated his image as a Christian warrior and his TV talents as a Fox News host.

Last month he warned a group of pastors that, “We are moving rapidly toward the criminalization of Christianity” and added that ministers might soon have to start performing same-sex

marriages or be subject to civil or criminal punishment.

Neither statement has the advantage of truth. In his announcement Tuesday, he came out for veterans, against “the false god of judicial supremacy,” for a cure for cancer and against the IRS, “the biggest bully in America.”

Huckabee caught on in his first campaign in part because he comes across as a genial, empathetic man who can promote a kind of moral populism without seeming moralistic. At times, Huckabee’s instincts have led him to laudable positions that won’t help him in a GOP primary: He continues to argue against punishing children brought to the United States illegally, for example. He believes the Republican Party needs to show concern for working people.

Of late, however, his appeal to the working class

has tended toward a kind of conspiratorial populism that would not serve the U.S. economy well. “We have a lot of globalists and, frankly, corporatists instead of having nationalists,” he said as he criticized the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal in March.

Huckabee also renewed his support for the so-called Fair Tax, which would replace all federal income and payroll taxes with a national consumption tax. Taxing spending rather than savings or labor makes sense in principle.

In practice, such a tax would have to be set very high and designed carefully in order not to be regressive, and the plan probably wouldn’t get rid of the IRS, as its backers claim.

Still, it might appeal to primary voters for its downhome simplicity – much like Huckabee himself.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Exhibit explores life through Batavia resident’s eyes Photos will be on display through May at Aurora gallery

The 56-year-old has been taking photos since she was 16. An exhibit of her work – “Susan May Moody Exposed” – will be on display through Friday, May 29, at Yetee Gallery, 110 Cross St., in downtown Aurora.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Moody, who also works as a legal assistant in Chicago, about the exhibit.

Eric Schelkopf: Congratulations on the exhibit. You have a Facebook page, “Jumping at The Bean,” [with photos] of people jumping in front of [“Cloud Gate,” also known as the “Bean”] in Chicago. How did that come about?

Susan May Moody: I would go there at lunch and I would see people just doing the reflective selfie type of picture.

And I thought, “I know there’s a better picture.”

And I certainly didn’t create the jump shot. But I just kind of perfected it in my own way.

I’ve already gotten some great stories from people. I’m scheduled to have a show at Water Street Studios in Batavia the whole month of September, where it will just be “Jumping at The Bean” photos with the stories that go along with them.

And then there’s a book in the works.

Schelkopf: So, you just go up to people and ask, “Will you jump for me?”

Moody: Sure. I go to the “Bean” and I say to them, “Can I show you a cool shot to do?”

A lot of people think it is going to cost them. I tell them that it’s free, and I only ask them to like my Facebook page.

since then. My son is a photographer up in Milwaukee, and he said to me one of the basic blessings that I have is the personality to talk to people, and to get them to just talk about their lives.

When they are relaxed and I am able to take pictures of them, they are more natural than anything posed.

Because it shows their personality and certain characteristics of them that you wouldn’t normally see.

Schelkopf: As I understand, this is your first show.

Moody: I’ve been so humbled by this whole experience. I’ve just always been that girl with a camera in her hand.

I bought a camera when I was 16 years old, and I’ve been taking pictures

Schelkopf: What kind of camera do you use, and how often are you out with your camera?

Moody: I have a Canon G12 digital camera that I just hold in my hand.

Every day at lunch I walk, and I take pictures.

Some days, I go to the “Bean” and

take pictures. Other days, I go throughout Chicago and take pictures.

A friend generously lent me this camera about two years ago. I recently saw him and I told him that I still referred to it as his camera. He said, “Well, please now refer to it as your camera.” So, it’s mine.

People would always ask me what kind of camera I use. And it took me about 10 years to figure out that it really didn’t have a lot to do with the camera.

It’s how I shot the picture, or what I shot, that spoke to them.

Schelkopf: What do you try to convey through your photos?

Moody: For me, pictures tell stories.

It’s an opportunity to tell stories.

Buttermilk modernizes favorite down-home dishes GENEVA – A platter-sized plateful of down-home-inspired decadence sat before me. An open-faced buttermilk biscuit was layered with buttermilk chicken-fried chicken and two fried eggs, smothered in sausage gravy and topped with crumbled hickory-smoked bacon, cheddar-cheese and a side of perfectly-crisped fried potatoes. The Chicken N’ Biscuits is a signature item at Buttermilk, the newest edition to the State Street dining scene in Geneva.

Using ingredients sourced locally from Heritage Prairie Farm in Elburn, Buttermilk serves breakfast and lunch in a relaxed atmosphere.

High ceilings, exposed ductwork, white walls, painted murals showcasing the Buttermilk bottle logo and a coffee bar that looks as if it was plucked out of a Pottery Barn catalog make Buttermilk a place you want to be. And dining at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday morning for breakfast, it seemed a lot of people had similar intentions. The place was packed, but luckily we had to only wait mere moments for a table to be cleared to grab a seat.

Designated with a milk-bottle on its menu, some signature items from Buttermilk include The Smokehouse Benny ($10.99) – slow-roasted pulled pork, arugula and poached eggs on griddled cornbread topped with smoky barbecue aioli; The Goat omelet ($10.99) – organic chicken sausage, sun-dried tomato, spinach and herbed goat cheese; Nuttin’ Bacon waffles ($9.59) – a Belgian waffle with crumbled hickory smoked bacon and sugared pecans; the Red Rooster skillet ($10.99) – roasted sweet potatoes, chorizo, jalapeños, onions, avocado slices and crumbled queso fresco; and Cinnamon Roll pancakes ($9.99) – cinnamon-infused pancakes, topped with ooey-gooey cream cheese icing.

Steelhead Vineyards owners continue to pay it forward In the few minutes it takes for a shower to warm up, Dan and Katy Leese have a bucket full of water.

The proprietors of Steelhead Vineyards will use the water on plants in their yard, which would have seemed like a trivial effort in the husband-and-wife team’s college years – Katy is an alumnus of the University of Iowa and Dan of Northern Iowa. It typifies their commitment to be stewards of the land.

In addition to the Chicken N’ Biscuits, I ordered the Cinnamon Roll pancakes to share.

The restaurant’s specialty coffee-bar menu has caffeinated concoctions, such as a Toasted Almond Latte and Mocha Coconut, and a cocktail menu with a few brews from Penrose Brewing Co. in Geneva, as well as wine and brunching beverages, such as a mimosa and Bloody Mary.

The Vanilla Latte I ordered was so delicious that I may go out of my way on my morning commute to work in order to grab a cup of joe from Buttermilk. That may have some-

thing to do with the “Bentley of espresso machines,” owner Pete Kostopoulos said he bought in a previous interview for the Kane County Chronicle.

Cutting into the fried eggs over the Chicken N’ Biscuits, an oozing layer of yoke soaked my crisped potatoes, and the peppery sausage gravy teamed perfectly with the chicken fried chicken, making each bite a perfect blend of stick-toyour-ribs loveliness.

With so many unique, contemporary twists on traditional breakfast favorites, choosing what to order will be a difficult decision, but that may just mean that you’ll have to become a repeat customer.

If you haven’t had a chance to try Buttermilk in downtown Geneva, shake up your morning routine and hunker down for a country-style breakfast you will not soon forget.

Dan and Katy Leese continue to pay it forward with their winery. Last year, they donated more than $10,000 to environmental causes.

They’ve made donations to Trout Unlimited, which helped restore Dry Creek in Sonoma; the Water and Wine program, which is committed to conserving waterways; and the latest initiative, Wild Steelheaders United, dedicated to protecting and restoring the wild steelhead’s habitats.

They do all this while making amazing wines that cost less than $15. Steelhead is easy to buy by the case because it’s the best value in this category and a supporter of great causes.

“There’s been a real push in the Northwest for the Wild Steelheaders,” Katy said. “But we want to bring it to a national level.”

Dan had been on the marketing and sales side of the wine industry and 13 years ago was relocated to California.

When his employer wanted him to transfer to Kentucky, it was too late. The Leese family had already fallen for California and set their sites on a new career.

“We saw an opportunity to be entrepreneurs,” Katy said.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to own a winery with

With the assistance of consulting winemaker Hugh Chappelle, the Steelhead Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2013 ($14.99) is one of the most complex I’ve had this year.

Stunned by the price after my initial tasting, it’s a brooding and moody pinot noir. It’s got a ferocious side with black cherry and wet leaves on the palate. There’s anise on the nose and a touch of cigar wrapper. It’s not muscular or overly fruity. There’s an acidity that keeps the fruit in check. It’s a master stroke to produce this wine for less than $15.

The Steelhead Vineyards North Coast Sauvignon Blanc ($12.99) has pineapple and crisp kiwi flavors. Eighty percent of the fruit is grown in the Lake County AVA, a growing region that’s not always easy for winemakers to access.

“We’re a very modern-style winery,” Katy said. “We’ve got access to a great winemaker and great sourcing of fruit. We don’t have to own a vineyard yet we have control of the wine we make because there are just so many great farmers out there who just grow grapes.”

Batavia had no problem getting anything done Wednesday against the Vikings, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 13-0 win in five innings to even the Upstate Eight Conference River Division series at one game apiece.

Once again, Holm’s message was short and to the point.

“We hit well, we pitched well, we played pretty good [defense],” he said. “It was nice to put a complete game together, but it’s time to get it done.”

A monthlong whirlwind ended with the 6-foot-7 forward calling Rockets coach Tod Kowalczyk shortly after classes Wednesday. Navigato said he reached the decision Tuesday night.

He visited Toledo last week and received a offer shortly thereafter.

In late April, Buffalo granted Navigato a release from his letter of intent after Bobby Hurley, the coach who recruited him, left the MAC school after two seasons for Arizona State. Navigato also had

new offers from American, Bradley and Illinois-Chicago before ultimately landing at Toledo, a school Navigato seriously considered in the fall but did not visit.

“Everybody’s been telling me everything happens for a reason,” Navigato said. “I’d just like to think that this is going to be the next chapter of my life. I’m looking forward to being there. I’m going to enjoy the experience and I’m blessed with the opportunity.”

Geneva’s all-time leading scorer with 1,757 career points, Navigato entertained numerous NCAA Division I offers before verbally committing to Buffalo.

Hurley and since-promoted assistant Nate Oats beamed at the news, which they received after visiting Navigato at a Geneva open gym in September.

Kowalczyk is entering his sixth season at Toledo after an eight-season head coaching career at Wisconsin-Green Bay. He guided the Rockets

to a school-record 27 victories in 2013-14 and was 20-13 last season.

His earlier résumé includes assistant coaching stints at New Hampshire, St. Anselm, Rider, Rutgers and Marquette.

As the versatile Navigato sees it, Kowalczyk’s offensive Xs and Os are as diverse as his coaching background.

“The way they run their offense and how they play really excited me,” Navigato said. “I feel like I could fit perfectly into their system and all the sets. Coach said they really liked skilled forwards, so that excited me.”

Navigato’s other recent visits included Bradley, whose Carver Arena housed the Vikings’ Class 4A fourth-place finish in March. Although he thought the Missouri Valley Conference school was “going in the right direction,” Navigato ultimately felt most comfortable at Toledo.

“Everything about Toledo just fit me,” Navigato said.

And with that, he exhaled.

Umpire Chesnut dishes on an open field Midwest League official discusses working solo

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Odd-man umpiring crews are inherently kooky, unless you ask Andrew Chesnut.

In the past 11 months at the Cougars’ Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, the second-year Midwest League umpire has finished a game solo and worked in a team of three.

The most recent of these ump-isodes occurred during the top of Tuesday’s fifth inning. JC Velez-Morales, who was assigned to work home plate with partner Chesnut on the bases, was shaken up after Quad Cities right fielder Bobby Boyd’s fouled bunt at-

tempt caromed off his mask.

Moments later, when Boyd successfully sacrificed a runner to second, Velez-Morales felt increasing dizziness as he jogged up the baseline. A Cougars official escorted him off the field, while Chesnut suddenly moved out of sight, as well.

After a delay and some extra loops of “The Hokey Pokey” during a kid-friendly Ozzie’s Reading Club matinee, Chesnut emerged with his chest protector and mask.

He finished the rest of the River Bandits’ 4-0 victory behind the plate – and by himself.

“You just plan for the worst, you know,” Chesnut said. “You always know it’s a possibility. You’ve just got to go out there and work.”

A 26-year-old from Tyler,

Texas, Chesnut worked in the Gulf Coast and Appalachian rookie leagues for one season apiece before coming to the MWL in 2014.

With respect to working solo, he said, “the roles have been reversed,” but Tuesday marked his first time umpiring alone.

Chesnut conferred briefly with Cougars catcher Stryker Trahan, then Quad Cities counterpart Jamie Ritchie in the bottom of the inning, and proceeded as usual.

“You just go back there, you see a few pitches and how they receive them,” Chesnut said. “Get an idea of how they’re working, get in position and go to work.”

In June 2014, Chesnut experienced a rare surplus of men in blue when the Cougars hosted Wisconsin.

Would-be replacement ump Jon Lindstrom of Homewood initially was set to work alongside Chesnut, but the three-game series ultimately fielded a three-man crew. Doctors cleared MWL ump Brandon Butler from a knee injury earlier than anticipated, and the MWL elected to keep the overbooking to honor its agreement with Lindstrom.

“It’s different [with three],” Chesnut said. “It’s a smidge easier, to an extent, if you’re familiar with it.

Because obviously you have more umpires to cover the field. Two-man obviously has some downfalls.”

Lindstrom (home plate) and Chesnut (bases) officiated Wednesday’s series finale, a 4-1 loss for the Cougars (1116).

arah Rowland embraced gymnastics in her formative years, when she still was grasping the world around her, let alone a bunch of apparatuses.

Almost a decade later, the Wredling Middle School eighth-grader doesn’t hesitate to pinpoint why she’s kept at her craft.

“I like just going out there and having fun because it’s more about the team,” Rowland said. “It’s fun to cheer people on, too. And then when it’s your turn, you just get to show off what you can do.”

Rowland is relishing the opportunity to do that this weekend on her biggest stage to date. She’s traveling with a contingent of St. Charles Gymnastics Academy coaches and teammates to represent the club in her age division at the USA Gymnastics Eastern Nationals in Kissimmee, Florida.

High school seniors Taylor Coppola (St. Charles East) and Riley Stefan (St. Charles North) will join Rowland in Florida, competing in a different division. Each athlete

She competes as a Level 9 gymnast, along with Coppola and Stefan.

“The age difference is big between us, but it’s not really noticeable when we’re working out together,” Stefan said.

SCN grads look to close out careers on a high note Fitting that it’s coming during another senior year.

Taylor Russell is currently wrapping up her collegiate softball career at the University of Indianapolis, and with the Greyhounds boasting a 42-12 record and the No. 2 seed in this weekend’s NCAA Division Taylor II regional, Russell the former St. Charles North standout is having a bit of déjà vu when it comes to a successful senior season.

After all, the last time Russell was a senior, in 2011, the North Stars were the runner-up in the IHSA Class 4A state tournament.

“It’s awesome. It’s exciting, and I hope that we can do even bigger things,” said Russell, a utility player. “Ultimately our goal is to go to the World Series, and I think that’s really doable

with this team because we all have the drive to accomplish more. We’re coming together at a good moment right now. ... I think right now we’re clicking, and it’s exciting that my senior year we’re going to do big things.”

It’s not just the level of success, however, that’s making this senior season feel like Russell’s high school senior season. She’s one of three North products on the Greyhounds roster, joining twin sister Sydney, an outfielder, and Loyola transfer Amanda Ciran, a pitcher.

Russell said it’s easy to spot parallels between that North Stars team and the current Indianapolis squad.

“Definitely clicking at the right moment,” she said. “I feel like this year and senior year [of high school], both teams clicked at the right moment. I can kind of see it now where we’re all starting to come together and starting to play as

Russell’s been playing with her twin sister for quite some time now, but it’s certainly not getting old. With her career coming to a close, she said it’s great to be able to go through a final season with her sister by her side.

“She’s an awesome support system. Whenever I’m having a rough day, she’s the one I turn to in the dugout, along with my roommate, Jessica Vleck. It’s nice to have those two,” Russell said. “I can be able to sit there and [Sydney] can criticize me because I’m not going to take it personally. I know she’s just trying to help me. So it’s

awesome to have that kind of support system, and just to play with her to finish out my career is awesome in itself.”

After losing the opener, that became a little harder.

The doctors give her a year at the most. My dilemma is whether to extend just one more olive branch.

She has never been a “warm and fuzzy” type of grandmother.

She was cold and distant when I was in my teens and 20s, and downright mean when I was in my 30s. If I try to talk to her at family functions, she turns away and begins a conversation with someone else. Last year at a family reunion, she took several photos with my mom and sister, and when it was suggested I join them in the photo, she walked away before one could be snapped. I’m not the only family member or grandchild she behaves this way toward. None of us knows why.

Abnormal menstrual bleeding can have several causes Dear Doctor K: My periods used to be pretty regular. But for the past few months, I’ve been spotting all month long. Why is this happening?

Dear Reader: There are many possible explanations. Fortunately, few of them can turn into serious problems. Before talking about the causes of abnormal bleeding from the uterus, it’s worth reviewing the menstrual cycle.

Normally, the cycle is triggered by signals from sex hormones.

Hormones made in the brain travel to the ovaries, leading to the production of other hormones by the ovaries: estrogen and progesterone. But sometimes the cycle’s hormonal signals get thrown off.

Irregular bleeding, including alternating periods that are heavy and light, spotting, or shorter and longer cycles, can result.

In the first half of the menstrual cycle, levels of the female hormone estrogen start to rise.

Among its many functions, estrogen stimulates the making of the inner lining of the uterus. This endometrial lining is the blood-enriched layer of tissue that grows inside the uterus every month to prepare for a possible pregnancy.

While the lining is growing, an egg in one of the ovaries starts to mature. Midway through the

The egg travels from the ovary down a tube (the oviduct) to the uterus. If the egg is fertilized, it lands in the uterine lining, where it begins to grow. If the egg is not fertilized, hormone levels drop.

As a result, the thickened lining of the uterus is shed during the menstrual period. This prepares the uterus to form a new and fresh inner lining a month later.

Irregular bleeding can happen for a number of reasons. In teenagers, for example, following the start of menstruation, cycles may take a few months or years to become normal. That’s often because hormone levels aren’t yet sufficient to keep the endometrial lining growing. As a result, parts of the blood-enriched lining separate from the uterus, then get passed from the uterus to the vagina. Then the pieces of lining get passed out of the vagina, which is when spotting is noticed.

Other factors that can change bleeding patterns include: • Hormonal abnormalities (thyroid problems, for example);

• Medications (most commonly, birth control pills and blood thinners like warfarin); • Excessive exercise or weight loss; • Obesity; • Stress or illness.

Just as at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, sex hormone levels start to peter out and get irregular as a woman approaches menopause. Spotting becomes more common than earlier in life.

There are many effective treatments to help regulate periods and control irregular bleeding.

If irregular bleeding is caused by another medical condition, treating that condition should restore normal cycles. Otherwise, treatment is based on the cause and the amount of bleeding.

When deciding on treatment, your doctor will take into account whether you want to have children or not. If you don’t, birth control pills that combine the hormones estrogen and progesterone can decrease the amount of bleeding. If you do, your doctor may prescribe medication to help your ovaries ovulate more regularly.

2 From pub to barn, Maryland estate built for living lavishly

By MICHELE LERNER Special to The Washington Post Joe Bruno and his wife, Cynthia Marini Bruno, have never been known to do something on a small scale.

The grand entrance to their Potomac, Maryland, estate starts when custom-designed, wrought-iron gates tipped in gold slowly glide open and reveal a spectacular fountain and stone steps reminiscent of Villa D’Este near Rome.

Inside, guests are welcomed into a breathtaking foyer with an ivory marble floor set with diamonds of multi-hewed marble and, overhead, a colorful two-story crystal chandelier hand-carried home from Venice.

“We’ve had some great parties in this house while our daughters were growing up and with our friends from the charter school world and from the Italian-American groups we belong to,” says Joe Bruno, a Ferrari-driving entrepreneur who since 2004 has served as president of Building Hope, a nonprofit that provides business, technical and financial assistance to public charter schools. “There’s a story behind every painting, every collection and every piece of furniture.”

The Brunos worked with David Herchik and Richard Looman of JDS Designs in Washington to design and decorate their estate. The Brunos previously co-owned

Hunters and Gatherers, a now-closed antique store in Kensington, Maryland, with Herchik and Looman.

The four spent seven years sourcing Italian treasures, designing opulent curtains and furniture and hiring expert craftsmen and painters to create this nearly 20,000-square-foot estate. Clearly this was a labor of love for all four, who still regale one another with stories about their trips to Italy and to antique stores to find the art, furniture and accessories that fill the house.

“There isn’t one white ceiling in this entire house,” Cynthia Bruno says. “Every ceiling either has a mural painted on it, wallpaper that extends from the walls onto the ceiling or is painted a shade that matches the walls but is 50 percent lighter to make the ceiling seem even higher.”

The home has 11 fireplaces, all but one wood-burning; four kitchens; and so many crystal chandeliers that the Brunos have lost count. Gathering the sculptures, sconces and swag for the dozens of rooms in the Bruno home generated years of happy memories and laughter.

“Joe and I would travel to small villages in the countryside in Italy, and it was expected that we would negotiate over cups of espresso and cigarettes,” Herchik says.

“Unfortunately, I was the only one of our little group who would drink espresso or smoke, so I don’t think I slept a minute for 10 days because I was so wired from caf-

As the four slowly decorated the home, Looman joked that the only thing missing was a grotto. Joe Bruno took that idea to heart, and soon a grotto, accessible only from a hidden door in the media room, was dug underneath the house. Stone stairs with bronze gargoyles and rope handrails

lead down to the dim space, which has a splashing stone fountain, beaded glass lanterns that resemble wine grapes and a hand-wrought iron garden gate leading to a bathroom with a mosaic floor.

Adjacent to the fountain is a game room with a massive stone fireplace with a mantel based on a design from an Italian palazzo. When the fire is lighted, the flames appear to be in the center of a roaring giant’s mouth. The game room is furnished with a 16th-century liturgical cabinet from an Italian cathedral and the hand-painted back of a Sicilian horse-drawn cart from the 1800s.

“That cart is one of my favorite pieces in the house, because I remember seeing decorated carts like that from festivals in Sicily when I lived there as a child,” Joe Bruno says.

The adjacent wine cellar and tasting room holds the oldest object in the house, a bread box from the 1600s that he bought when he lived in Rome, long before his Potomac Italian home was built.

The Brunos’ home has been designed for entertaining in intimate spaces such as the wine tasting room and in grander spaces such as the living room, the dining room, the family room and the pub.

“Every room in the house is cozy, that’s how David interpreted our tastes and incorporated our wishes everywhere,” says Cynthia Bruno. “This may be a big house, but it’s not a cold house.”
