Man charged with shoplifting in STC

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A man accused of shoplifting from a St. Charles retailer had a lessthan-smooth exit from the store after realizing he left his dog in a cart he abandoned at the entrance, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

John Philip Maddaleni, 45, of the 0N600 block of Pleasant Hill Road, Wheaton, reportedly was John Philip s e e n S u n d a y Maddaleni concealing merchandise under clothing that was folded over his arm while in the electronics department at Walmart, 150 Smith Road.

Witnesses told police he also opened a locked plexiglass jewelry display, which later was found to be damaged to the point that it couldn’t be secured.

Maddaleni placed numerous pieces of jewelry in a store bag he had on the shopping cart’s child seat and covered it with a pet carrier containing a “tiny” dog, police reported.

An employee reportedly tried to stop Maddaleni as he pushed his cart out the first set of doors, past all points of sale.

“He left the cart and started to run out the doors but ap-

parently realized he’d left his dog behind,” police reported.

“He came back, grabbed the carrier and shoved the cart at [the employee].”

An employee reportedly recovered the bag of jewelry Maddaleni abandoned.

Meanwhile, Maddaleni ran north alongside the store, “pulling merchandise from his pants and throwing it as he ran,” police reported.

After a few hundred feet, police reported, Maddaleni stopped suddenly and turned around, “skipping” back to the employee.

The items he had discarded were retrieved, and police also recovered a pry tool similar to a paint can opener he had thrown, police said.

Maddaleni reportedly had $2.83 in loose change on his person.

The value of the stolen merchandise totaled $1,031.68, police said, and the damage to the jewelry case was estimated at more than $300.

Maddaleni was charged with criminal damage to property and felony retail theft.

Police noted Maddaleni was wanted on a DuPage County warrant carrying a charge of retail theft.

Maddaleni was taken to the DuPage County Jail. His dog was turned over to his significant other, who was not involved in the incident, police said.

North Aurora to fill new vacancy on Village Board

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village President Dale Berman said he plans to appoint someone to fill the newly created vacancy on the North Aurora Village Board at the next board meeting May 19.

Ryan Lambert recently resigned from the Village Board after he was named the new fire chief after the retirement of Steve Miller.

Lambert was elected to the Village Board in April 2011, and his term expires in April 2015.

Berman said he will not be soliciting applications for the vacancy because he already has someone in mind to appoint to the spot. Ber-

man did not name the individual, but he said the person has been involved in the village.

At Monday’s board meeting, village attorney Kevin Drendel said the appointment must be made within 60 days.

The appointment is made with the advice and consent of the board.

Lambert took over the reins of the fire department May 1 after getting the nod from the North Aurora Fire Board of Trustees. Before he was promoted, Lambert was the department’s fire marshal.

Lambert said he resigned from the board because being fire chief will demand his full attention.

LBURN – Wearing her glittering white cowboy hat and perched on the seat of her walker – named Harley – president of the Elburn Seniors Nadine Anderson calls the meeting to order.

This is serious business: Getting volunteers to bring the food for the next month’s meeting.

The total for April was 29 paid members – dues are $15 a year – and three more who came. Not bad, but Anderson said she hopes to get more members.

“I would love to have some new members,” said Anderson, 79. “We used to have almost 100, but they died off or they can’t drive anymore. You do not even have to be 50 to join. I’ll take them in their 20s, if they will put up with us. It’s just a social club.”

Anderson said she grew up in Elburn, but now lives in St. Charles. She’s been president for eight years. Their club does not have a senior center, but the Elburn Lions organization allows the group to use the building for free, she said.

“They even set up coffee and hot water for tea,” Anderson said.

Meetings are a potluck lunch at noon the first Thursday of every month, and group members take a gambling trip once a month, Anderson said.

Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass and their own table service and beverage.

And sometimes there’s after-meeting socializing among the seniors, such as a friendly card game, members said.

Jim Read of North Aurora said he likes the Elburn Seniors group because it’s a great way to socialize for an afternoon.

Proposed Dunkin’ Donuts site draws criticism

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two people, a resident and a business owner, on Tuesday expressed concerns about a Dunkin’ Donuts site planned for the city’s east side.

Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees Karim Khoja and Tom Thiem plan to open a Dunkin’ Donuts at 2701 E. Main St., the former site of a Qdoba restaurant. They went before the Plan Commission to request

for their business a drive-thru facility stacking space reduction, which refers to the space needed for cars waiting in the drive-thru.

St. Charles resident Carol Bayer questioned the accessibility of the site for buses that need to drop off riders in wheelchairs. She also addressed the franchisees’ lack of contact with St. Charles Toyota, the business directly west of the proposed site.

Dennis Alf, who owns the Toyota dealership with his

sons, was at Tuesday’s commission meeting. He talked about how customers of nearby stores have used the private drive that is situated between the dealership and the future Dunkin’ Donuts site.

“I’m concerned that the road would be a more prevalent deal when we have a drive-up [business],” he said.

Khoja said Tuesday’s meeting was the first time he had heard about the issue with the drive.

Khoja and Thiem also are the franchisees behind a Dunkin’ Donuts proposed for the former Goody’s restaurant site, located at 2057 Lincoln Highway in St. Charles.

Their stores would be the second and third Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in St. Charles after the 1711 W. Main St. location.

According to the agreement, Cunningham’s office agrees not to contest if Ward applies for unemployment insurance benefits. Ward will state the reason for his termination is the elimination of his position, the agreement states.

Ward provided a letter of resignation, and Cunningham wrote a letter of reference for Ward to use in pursuing another job. The separation agreement states the clerk will “limit any commentary to the contents of the letter of reference.”

Cunningham’s letter states that Ward “was responsible for implementing and supporting internal and countywide software systems, designing and programming a voter database, [and] documenting and improving internal and interoffice workflow,” among other accomplishments.

“Jeff has excellent communication and writing skills ... works independently and consistently follows through to be sure the job gets done,” Cunningham’s letter of recommendation states, in part.

The agreement states that Ward will release Cunningham from all claims and expenses and damages of any kind, and both parties also deny any liability to each other, violation of law or wrongdoing.

Both sides also agreed not to disparage the other to the media, prospective employers or any third party, among others, the agreement states.

Horse show event set MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding will be hosting a Fun Horse Show event on Memorial Day on May 26. Twenty-seven riders of all ages with special needs will be demonstrating their skills and enthusiasm.

The show is at Fox Chase Farm, 46W276 Route 38, Maple Park. A casual schooling show is planned, and riders are preparing to compete in classes such as costume, egg and spoon, obstacle course and dressage.

GENEVA – Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s former deputy clerk will be paid more than $11,000, according to a separation agreement obtained by the Kane County Chronicle through the Freedom of Information Act. Jeff Ward was placed on a five-day suspension in March for doing campaign work for Cunningham’s GOP primary race on the county’s server.

Ward agreed to resign his position as an applications analyst April 1, according to the seven-page agreement.

Ward had worked in Cunningham’s office, starting Dec. 7, 2012, records show.

Cunningham’s office agreed to pay Ward $11,298.42 in a one-time lump sum within 30 days of the agreement being signed April 19. The amount represents 12 weeks of Ward’s current salary of $47,999.90 per year, according to county records.

Cunningham said Tuesday that Ward had not been paid yet.

New chief takes lead at Sugar Grove Fire Protection District

Bill Perkins took the reins Thursday after the retirement of Marty Kunkel, who had been the district’s chief for nine years. Kunkel previously had been with the Aurora Fire Department for 27 years.

Before he was promoted by the Sugar Grove Fire District Board, Perkins had been the district’s deputy fire chief.

He has been with the district since November 2012 after being with the Oswego Fire Department for more than 16 years.

Perkins now leads a department of 17 full-time fire-

“We have to do as much as we can with the limited tax dollars we have,” Perkins said. “The need doesn’t go away when the economy stagnates. We are trying to continue to meet the needs of the public.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A second day of discovery recount Tuesday has resulted in little change in the contest between Kane County Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny and Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

Kostelny lost to Tegeler by seven votes in the 16th Judicial Circuit, third sub-circuit, 6,220 to 6,213.

Tegeler and Kostelny both were seeking a vacancy to be

left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6. Associate judges are appointed; circuit judges are elected.

“He is still seven votes up,” Tegeler attorney Ken Shepro said. “When we counted the early votes, she went down by two, and he went down by one. It does not change the totals. They’re just trying to figure out why they don’t match.”

Kostelny attorney John Countryman said he had no comment other than “there are things that need to be reconciled yet.”

The discovery recount of 16 Kane precincts, which began Monday, will continue today, Cunningham said.

The first part of the discovery recount involved two precincts late last month at the Aurora Election Commission. In that recount, one ballot that was marked with a check mark became an issue.

A discovery recount does not change an election’s outcome unless it shows enough votes are affected and a candidate files court papers seeking a full recount by a May 19 deadline.

GENEVA – Colleen J. Narr, 75, of Geneva, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. She was born on March 24, 1939, in Aurora, the daughter of Frank J. and Dorothy Mae (Hunt) Salerno.

Colleen was united in marriage March 20, 1971, to Lawrence M. Narr, and they spent the next 43 happy years together. She was an alumni of the Marlyn Majorettes and Majors Drum Corp in Sycamore. Colleen enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Narr of Geneva; her children, Vincent (Kimberly) Paku of South Elgin and Cherise Narr of Elburn; her grandson, Tyler Narr; and her brother, Gerald L. (Flora) Salerno of Terre Haute, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Dorothy Salerno.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, at the Nash-Nelson Funeral Home, 1001 E. Garfield St., Waterman. Interment will follow in North Clinton Cemetery in Waterman.

He enjoyed sharing his love for the Lord. Arthur earned his private pilot license in 1966. He had a passion for flying and he loved to fish. He and his family spent many summers in Ontario, Canada fishing on Wabaskang Lake.

Art is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet; his three children, Karen (Mike) O’Shaughnessy of Phoenix, Valerie (Adam) Rosenzweig of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Douglas (Laurie) Swanson of North Aurora; five grandchildren, Kaitlin, Kelly, Kayla and Kara O’Shaughnessy and Max Rosenzweig; and his sister, Pat Kirschbaum.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Sr. and Harriet; and his sister, Jeanne Pinard.

Arthur was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He was a kind, gentle man who will be greatly missed by all.

Elburn • Angela Cadella Harland, 21, of the 600 block of South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, was charged on Sunday, April 27, with driving while license suspended and speeding 57 mph in a 30 mph zone on Anderson Road near Railroad Street, according to a police report. Harland’s passenger posted her $150 bond, police said.

• A conductor on a Metra Commuter train on Tuesday, April 15, found a black container with a green leafy substance that appeared to be cannabis, according to police report. The container was on a seat as it was leaving the Geneva Train Depot.

The conductor handed an officer the container, which was entered into evidence to be destroyed.

• Jesus Dominguez-Ginez, 38, of the 100 block of Village Court, Elgin, was charged on Wednesday, April 9, with driving without a valid driver’s license at Main and Shannon streets, according to a police report. The driver walked to a bank to obtain $150 for bond. He also posted $120 for a safety test violation, which was issued to his company.

Geneva • Jeffrey N. Ward, 55, of the 100 block of Abbey Lane, Geneva, was charged, Monday, April 21, with disorderly conduct. According to court records, Ward knowingly kicked the front door of a house in the 3000 block of Adamson Drive, on Friday, April 11, alarming the juvenile resident of the house and provoking a breach of the peace.

Sugar Grove • A resident on the 400 block of Pebblebrook Court said her

neighbor had been outside harassing some landscapers on her property and threatening to “kill the bushes,” on Tuesday, April 29, according to a police report. The neighbor on April 28 also harassed the surveyor who had marked a location for the landscapers, the resident said.

Police told the resident to call whenever problems occur and that they would document each incident.

• Filemon Bonilla, 26, of the 800 block of Route 34, Plano, was charged Monday, April 28, with failure to signal when required and driving while license suspended on Sugar Lane at Cross Street, according to a police report. Bonilla was I-bonded at the scene and given a June 6 court date.

• Brandie Schnidt, 21, of the 1100 block of Pine Grove Court, Aurora, was charged Saturday, April 19, with DUI, DUI with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent, improper lane usage and driving without insurance on Route 47 at Galena Boulevard, according to a police report. ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – In response to the recent “sexting” incident in Batavia, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is encouraging parents to talk to their kids about responsible use of social media.

“This is really a teaching opportunity,” he said Tuesday during his monthly meeting with the media.

McMahon raised the issue the day after the Batavia Police Department announced that charges would not be filed against the Rotolo Middle School students involved in the incident.

City mulls extension of moratorium on nonretail uses

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City staff is recommending a three-month extension of the current moratorium on nonretail uses along Randall Road and other commercial districts.

In December, aldermen approved a six-month moratorium on accepting applications for certain nonretail uses in commercial districts such as Randall and Kirk roads. Those uses would include banks and health care facilities.

The moratorium is set to expire May 19. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke had voiced concerns about nonsales-tax generating businesses trying to locate on Randall Road. He had voiced the need for the city to “put some constraints on how much nonsales-tax use we put on Randall Road.”

City staff have proposed revisions to the city’s zoning code to address the nonretail use issue. The revisions include a prohibition of cultural institutions and allowing nonretail businesses, except for restaurants, to occupy only up

to 50 percent of its lease space in multitenant buildings.

“Staff believes that cultural institutions are best located in the downtown,” Batavia Planning and Zoning Officer Joel Strassman said in a memo to aldermen. “These uses also tend to occupy larger spaces. Since there are no such uses in the general commercial district, this change does not create any nonconforming uses.”

Strassman said that a flat prohibition of nonsales-tax generating businesses in commercial districts, such as Randall Road, could have a negative effect over time on retail businesses because of the “synergy of attracting customers.”

“Allowing a percentage of these buildings to have nonretail businesses would provide opportunity for both retail and nonretail businesses to locate in the general commercial district,” Strassman said.

Staff has recommended a three-month extension of the moratorium to allow for time to amend the city’s zoning ordinance.

ELBURN – Village officials Monday took part in a preannexation conference with a representative from a company who discussed a project that could include a mix of townhouses, single-family homes and commercial development.

Art Zwemke, a manager at the Robert Arthur Land Company, spoke during a Committee of the Whole meeting in Elburn on a plan for a 137-acre parcel on the west side of Route 47, south of Keslinger Road.

Village Administrator Erin Willrett said staff mem-

bers were seeking direction from Village Board members about whether to proceed, and board members supported that.

Zwemke said there previously had been interest at the location, but “at about the time we wanted to do something, the market dropped.”

The plan calls for four benchmarks.

There would be no more than 150 single-family homes.

There would be no more than 120 townhouses. There would be 10 acres of commercial use.

Open space would occupy no less than 40 percent of the land. Zwemke said the gross

density would be less than two homes per acre.

To the east of the development, across Route 47, is land that is expected to feature the future site of St. Gall Catholic Church.

The development also would sit near Welch Creek and the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club.

Zwemke said the project would be consistent with the village’s comprehensive plan, which was adopted last year.

Village President Dave Anderson said the Sportsman’s Club could be a concern for some future residents.

ELBURN – Kristen Hendricks of Elburn knows firsthand that individuals can effect change on a seemingly insurmountable social issue.

Six years ago, Hendricks launched the Kwagala Project – an organization dedicated to rescuing, restoring and empowering women and children who have been victimized by trafficking, gender-based violence and poverty in Kampala, Uganda. It provides survivors with housing, education, vocational training and therapy.

Kwagala means love.

Since its launch, Kwagala Project has helped more than 300 people, Hendricks said.

She said the number is difficult to quantify and many of the girls are in the program for several years.

“We can offer girls a brand

new life,” she said.

Hendricks, 40, was one of 13 people recognized April 30 during the American Red Cross’ annual Heroes Breakfast in Chicago. Hendricks was honored as the Citizenship Hero.

More than 170 people were nominated.

“It was obviously a huge honor, especially being in company with the other heroes,” Hendricks said.

The Kwagala Project stemmed from the philanthropic arm of a handbag company Hendricks co-founded, she said, noting the charitable segment supported anti-trafficking groups.

The philanthropic arm became its own entity after the business got clobbered by the recession, Hendricks said.

Hendricks said she wanted to do something in a developing country because she knew

she could make a bigger impact that way.

In 2008 she traveled to Uganda, where she saw firsthand what was happening there.

Although it was horrible, she said, she was encouraged to see that it wouldn’t be structurally difficult to establish something there.

The Kwagala Project has received corporate support, Hendricks said. While fundraising is never easy, she said, it’s easier once people see what their contributions are doing.

“They’re really saving lives and getting girls out of horrific circumstances,” Hendricks said. “It’s just proof that they can really do something.”

‘We’re not going to be lucky forever’ Experts: being prepared is key during tornado season

The St. Charles resident is a storm chaser, and she said she has seen severe weather develop in big cities and more rural areas.

She said it can get frustrating when those close to her tell her they don’t think a tornado could strike in the Kane County area.

“A bunch of friends got really mad,” she said. “I was talking about tornadoes, and they said it would never happen. They think Lake Michigan would spare us.”

Severe weather season has arrived, and local experts agree that it is possible that tornadoes could cause damage in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area.

Training has taken place, and those involved said it is not wise to ignore tornado warnings or severe thunderstorm warnings. A weather radio is helpful, they said, as are alert

According to www.ready. gov, the peak season for tornadoes in northern states is from late spring through early summer.

When danger strikes Paul Bumba, the emergency preparedness coordinator for the city of St. Charles, said there have been efforts to inform residents about the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and warning, and a tornado watch and warning.

A watch means conditions are favorable for a severe thunderstorm or tornado. A warning means that a severe thunderstorm or tornado is occurring, and those in the designated

area likely will be in danger.

“When a warning is issued, it means they should take shelter right now. … A lot of times they’ll wait for an outdoor warning siren, and then talk to their neighbors and friends to see what is occurring. My suggestion is not to wait,” Bumba said.

John Baird, assistant superintendent for operations and buildings at St. Charles School District 303, said the district conducts drills to prepare for severe weather. If a warning were to go off, he said, “we go into hold immediately. … When those weather radios tell you to take cover, we are in cover until we are released.”

He said such situations have happened in the past few years.

The biggest challenge, he said, can be when there is a warning while parents are waiting outside of a school. He said “sometimes, you literally have to go out and get them.”

Elburn resident Brad Hruza, a storm chaser and weather spotter, said when people are at home, the best place to take shelter is a basement, under the stairs or in an interior room with walls on all sides and no windows. He said it’s important to pay attention to warnings and take shelter.

“I have witnessed death, from people not taking warnings seriously, firsthand,” he said, adding that he went to Moore, Okla., and stood in the area where children died at a school. “It was hard to take in.”

Be prepared

Taking it seriously Mahoney and Hruza both seek out severe storms and have witnessed multiple tornadoes. But they say there still are too many residents who live in the area who become complacent. For example, Mahoney said she’s heard friends in Kane County say the area is

too populated to sustain serious tornado damage, but she stressed the area is not bigger than Tuscaloosa, Ala., a city of nearly 100,000 that was hit hard by tornadoes in 2011.

“We’ve been lucky so far,” she said. “We’re not going to be lucky forever.”

Bumba said part of the issue is that the county covers a lot of area from north to south, and there could be a tornado warning and severe weather in the north part of the county, but no severe weather at all on the same day in the south part of the county.

“They’ve been warned before, and nothing has happened,” Bumba said. “And rather than being thankful that nothing has happened, it’s like we’re crying wolf again.”

He sent out strongly worded warnings on the office’s Facebook page in the hopes that people would take heed and avoid unnecessary travel. Instead, he said “we had quite a few people who were out and about in some of those big snowstorms who really, quite honestly, didn’t need to be there when they got stuck.”

“I think some of it is that people say, ‘Oh, it’s a severe thunderstorm warning,’ and nothing happens,” Gengler said. “Until that weather event gets here, you can want to tell people all you want. You truly don’t know what the impact is going to be. … You can’t stick your head in the sand and say it couldn’t happen.”

He said people should have weather radios and take advantage of technology that can provide warnings. He said people can look at the radar, and they can have an understanding of what might be headed their way. He said it’s important to have a good plan – at home and at work – and he suggests that parents know what the policy is at their children’s schools.

Among important questions to consider, he said – do you have your finances in order? If you do lose everything, do you have a way to recover titles to houses or cars?

Google, Amazon are going to be your mailmen

In the online-shopping world of endless options, seamless search and easy e-payments, the delivery of the item to your door remains the one tangible part of a virtual experience.

Historically, the United Parcel Service, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service have carried most of the weight of the delivery process. Now, the tech giants want in.

Google announced Monday it is expanding its same-day deliveries, following Amazon’s increased development of a similar service. Disrupting the delivery process offers these tech companies a way to attain total domination of the shopping experience, and it will almost certainly be a good thing for consumers, too.

Google’s service, which has been operating in San Francisco for just over a year and is now expanding to parts of New York and Los Angeles, offers expedited shipping from major stores including Target and Walgreens.

In a similar fashion, trucks managed by Amazon-supervised contractors are now delivering packages to consumers in parts of San Francisco, Los Angles and New York.

At face-value, the move to physical delivery seems counter-tech – Internet-based technology company sends real-life people dressed in khaki to go door-to-door. Yet the home-delivery space is in bad need of tech shakeup to provide faster, flexible, more reliable service. Increased competition among delivery providers also benefits consumers looking for deals. For example, Google is offering six months of unlimited free deliveries as part of its expansion. Owning the delivery process is an important step for these tech giants to fully manage the customer experience. Google has conquered how information travels on the Internet; now it could be a real player in shaking up how physical items move around the country. As an online retailer, however, Amazon arguably has more riding on this experiment. The Postal Service, UPS and FedEx should take note. Right now, package delivery is a positive note for the cash-short USPS, so much so that it struck a deal with Amazon last fall to deliver packages on Sunday. It is unlikely Amazon or Google could afford to manage truck distribution in less populated areas, and increased success of e-commerce could even result in increased business for UPS and FedEx as other retailers try to ramp up their own online-delivery operations. But as Amazon and Google iron out the kinks and bring on the drones, we’re in for an exciting – and let’s hope more reliable – delivery future.

Just recently, the five-person majority of the court ordained that no limits could be enforced on individual contributions to candidates.

This obviously enables a billionaire so inclined to attempt to buy an election.

About that same time as the court’s recent ruling, several of the leading Republican candidates for president gathered in Las Vegas to secure the support of Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire owner of gambling casinos. He gave $90 billion in a failed effort to buy the last presidential election. He supported Newt Gingrich.

Perhaps, he wanted to make sure they supported the ban on

Internet gambling that might otherwise affect his casinos.

Somehow, I always thought the electorate had the power to decide who had the best ideas in an election. Isn’t that called democracy?

Billions are spent every year by lobbyists trying to influence Congress. Does the court even try to understand what’s going on, or doesn’t that matter?

Chief Justice Roberts opined in the hearings on the most recent ruling that there was no evidence of quid pro quo by donors to elections.

Where does he live? Perhaps in another world?

Pinch-hit homer helps Saints win

GENEVA – Mackenzie Lofgren was an overlooked piece in the St. Charles East softball team’s run to the IHSA Class 4A state championship game last year.

Then a junior, Lofgren uncorked a crucial pinch hit as part of East’s state semifinal seventh inning rally against Barrington in East Peoria.

Playing much closer to home Tuesday, Lofgren again flashed her penchant to deliver in a pinch, swatting an opposite field, solo home run to tie the Upstate Eight Conference River game with Geneva to lead off the top of the seventh. East went on to win, 4-3, in eight innings. “[East coach Kelly Horan] always seems to put me up with all the pressure on,” Lofgren said with a laugh.

Lofgren’s drive to right-center field tied the score at 3 and swung momentum back in East’s favor after the Vikings overtook the Saints with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The homer off Geneva sophomore reliever Emily Plocinski was Lofgren’s second of the season.

Horan credited Lofgren for working ahead in the count and jumping on a favorable offer-

ing.

“This year her role right now is to be the designated hitter or pinch-hitter,” Horan said.

“So that’s her job, and gosh, it’s always exciting when they have that one moment and they

do something with it. I’m real excited and happy for her.”

East (20-5, 10-2 UEC River) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth in less orthodox fashion.

With one out and nobody on,

Saints junior Katie Kolb bunted softly back toward Plocinski and appeared likely to beat the throw, which ended up sailing down the right field line.

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Most of the time, an umpire’s call is hardly the big deal it’s made out to be. Out at home instead of safe? Strike three instead of ball four? Those things are easily negated elsewhere over the course of a lengthy baseball game.

But sometimes they change everything. And that’s what happened Tuesday afternoon in the first of a three-game set between crosstown rivals St. Charles East and St. Charles North, a 5-3 victory for the Saints.

But the final score might have been a lot different if not for the game’s most confusing – and most crucial – play.

East jumped to a 4-0 lead, scoring three times in the first and picking up another run in the third. But North started to get to East starting pitcher Austin Regelbrugge in the fifth inning, with four of the inning’s first five hitters getting hits to account for a pair of runs and cut the lead in half.

With one out and runners at second and third, Regelbrugge exited, yielding to

reliever Mick Vyzral. With North designated hitter Joe Kuczek at the plate, things became rather eventful.

Kuczek struck out, but strike three got past East catcher Adam Rojas. The 6-foot-4 Kuczek took off for first base, but instead of instantly throwing down for the out, Rojas faked several times, hoping to keep the runners at their respective bases. When he finally did throw to first, the throw went whizzing by first baseman Ben Smith and rolled all the way to the outfield wall in the right-field corner.

The North Stars baserunners started sprinting home, including Kuczek, who made it all the way in and scored when a throw home went past Rojas.

It appeared the North Stars took a 5-4 lead. They soon learned they did not.

Umpires had ruled that Rojas’ initial throw to first base hit the helmet of Kuczek, who was ruled to be illegally running inside the baseline, preventing the catcher and first baseman from connecting on the throw. Obstruction was called, Kuczek was out, the runs came off the board and

the runners returned to their bases. Shortly thereafter, North coach Todd Genke was ejected from the game for arguing.

Genke and North’s frustration stemmed from the delay in the call. Play continued on for some time following the initial throw and supposed act of obstruction, which Rojas said he saw the umpire call when it happened, the reason he wasn’t focused on the eventual throw home. But the call wasn’t made clear enough for everyone to see when it happened, leading to the confusion and, ultimately, Genke’s ejection.

“I’m very upset about how the call was administered,” Genke explained after the game. “If the call was a dead ball, everything should have ceased, the runners should have stopped, play should have stopped. … But when I saw the home-plate umpire waiting at home plate for a potential play at the plate, how is he telling me that it was a dead-ball call?”

“I think the confusion was that they scored three runs on that, on a dropped-thirdstrike out, as we didn’t do a very good job afterwards

as the circus was going on,” East coach Len Asquini said.

“But the explanation was real simple: It hit him [as he was running to first], it’s obstruction, he’s out, everything else is dead.”

Both sides agreed on one thing: It was the game’s most important play. Genke said it “completely changed the [complexion] of the outcome,” and Asquini called it “a momentum change for both groups.” North’s fifth-inning rally was brought to a screeching halt.

The teams each scored once more the rest of the way, but with the North Stars’ supply of momentum shut off, the game ended up going to East.

Right-hander Frankie Farry took the loss for the North Stars (16-5, 10-3 UEC River).

The Saints (15-8, 11-6 UEC River) can go for a series-clinching win tonight at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as North seeks to move on from Tuesday’s frustrating series opener.

“One game doesn’t make a series,” Genke said. “We certainly will be ready to come back [tonight] and play very good baseball. And we look forward to it.”

Following Horan’s instructions, she wheeled toward third then rounded toward home, scoring comfortably on the play.

Horan said she opted to send Kolb “as soon as I saw the right fielder’s numbers” chasing the ball.

“At that point it’s a foot race, and Katie Kolb, she’s a good person to have in that position,” Horan said. “I’ve got a couple speed rockets, but as soon as we saw that girl’s number, I was like ‘OK, here

we go.’ It was good for her that she didn’t stop.”

Kolb credited injured East catcher Mackenzie Meadows for helping set the play in motion.

“As our people on the bench, we pick up their pitching signs, so we knew a changeup was coming,” Kolb said. “Mackenzie Meadows was screaming my number so I knew the changeup was coming, and a changeup for me is the easiest pitch to bunt. If it wasn’t for ‘Kenzie, I wouldn’t have known that was coming.’ ” The Vikings (13-7, 6-4 UEC River) solved East righthander Haley Beno (11-4) with outs in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together three straight doubles – from

Annika Radabaugh, Kaitlyn Plocinski and Madison Keith – to grab a 3-2 lead.

Geneva coach Greg Dierks, however, thought the Vikings’ offense should have been more productive – and attentive – earlier in the game.

“We lost the game with the offense in the first five innings,” Dierks said. “We didn’t [execute] our bunts and we missed too many signs today, and every one of them cost us runs.”

“I’m not surprised that we can stick with anybody,” Dierks said. “When we play well, I think we’re good enough to stay on the field with anybody, including a good team like that.”

St. Charles East junior Mick Vyzral established the school single-season record for saves last week, earning his fifth in a 2-0 victory at Elgin.

“It’s awfully early to be setting records, especially when you only have [14] wins. … but that also tells you we’ve played an awful lot of close ballgames,” Saints coach Len Asquini said.

With deep pitching and a reliable defense, East figured any formula for success would revolve around getting victories the hard way.

Vyzral emerged as a bullpen candidate as the rotation came into clearer view in the preseason, and Asquini didn’t hesitate to throw him into a new role.

“He’s just got a good mix

of everything. He’s not your typical kind of closer,” Asquini said. “He’s done very well with it right now, so we’re going to run with that.”

“Definitely as the year progresses, you get more comfortable out there after being inside the entire winter,” Troop said. “Everything is starting to jell.

Marmion senior Michael Montalbano and his classmates were told there might not be enough time this month to pull off the 3-on-3 basketball tournament they proposed as a fundraiser.

The marketing students are learning first-hand word can spread like wildfire when there is an event that excites the masses.

Montalbano said Monday night that 22 teams already had signed up for the tournament – planned for May 17 at Marmion’s fieldhouse – and the field is expected to continue expanding in the days to come.

“I was shocked,” Montalbano said. “We weren’t really sure with turnout, how it was going to be. We thought we’d get it pretty big but we didn’t expect to get 22 teams this fast.”

Montalbano, JR Fredstrom, Brock Krueger, Jake Hutchison, Donovan Stanton and Drew Signa are in teacher Charles Brown’s marketing class. Class members were asked to devise a marketing plan to help raise money toward a scholarship program for prospective Marmion students that might not be able to afford the school’s tuition.

“I just talked to a kid this weekend that said he wanted to go to Marmion, but his parents couldn’t afford it,” Montalbano said. “Marmion is almost $10,000 a year now, so it’s hard, especially with the economy and stuff, for kids to afford it.

It doesn’t sound too appealing when parents are getting ready to send kids off to college and have to afford that.

“We thought anything could help and just doing something as simple as this tournament, maybe one kid that [can’t afford] to come, our project can help them afford it a little better, so hopefully they can come to Marmion. … All of that adds up from our groups [in the class].”

Teams of three or four players can enter at a cost of $15.

The entry fee was bumped up from $10 to accommodate prizes for the top teams.

The tournament will feature a broad range of basketball ability, but there is some legitimate hoops talent on board.

Montalbano said one team that

Montalbano, a football standout at Marmion, wouldn’t mind lacing ’em up himself, but he and his group-mates will be focusing on organizational duties on tournament day, including refereeing and making sure the bracket flows as planned.

Montalbano said games will take place with running clocks, with free throw shooting to serve as a tiebreaker if games are tied.

“It’s a lot to get ready and get organized, but we’re going to try to do it as effectively and efficiently as possible so we can get people in and out, and no one has to [sit around] waiting or anything,” Montalbano said.

Lacrosse events to boost Salvation Army: Marmion will host its seventh annual Cadet Challenge from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday. Fifteen teams from around the area will compete in the three-division, round-robin style event.

As part of the event, Marmion lacrosse and Reebie Storage and Moving Co. will collect nonperishable food items and raise funds for The Salvation Army.

Additionally, a “Crosstown Classic” for St. Charles lacrosse is scheduled for May 16 at St. Charles East’s Norris Stadium.

The East and North boys lacrosse teams will square off at 7:30 p.m., to be preceded by the St. Charles girls co-op facing St. Francis at 5:30 p.m. and an East vs. North JV game at 4 p.m.

Canned foods, toiletries and other nonperishables will be gathered for The Salvation Army in St. Charles at the event.

How was the trip?

It was a lot of fun.

It was more fun, I guess, this year maybe because I got to play more, but we had a ton of fun and got to learn a lot about our team and more about each other, so that was good for us.

What do you consider your key to playing well? When you’re really on, what are you doing to make that happen?

Just recently I talked to the coaches and from their point of view, they think it’s in my preparation.

So game day routine, I guess, everyone has their own thing.

There are things I do to get myself ready, maybe get some

extra sleep, try to get a nap in, obviously try to drink a lot of water, things like that. Just focusing on small things the day before the game and maybe leading up to that.

If you could pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Probably Alyssa Brandt or Kathleen Murphy.

They’re both in, I would say, the [hardest] classes and very successful in those classes, and I have an AP class with Alyssa and she helps me out a lot.

And they both know how to time manage very well and get things done and prioritize.

St. Charles North girls soccer junior Hanna Durocher is playing some of her best soccer of the season as the postseason approaches. Last week, she scored a highlight-reel goal and had an assist in North’s 4-1 win against Geneva, then notched an assist and supplied “great energy” – according to coach Ruth Vostal – throughout North’s Tournament of Champions run in Iowa over the weekend. Durocher, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke to Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about the Iowa trip and more. The following is an edited transcript:

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland junior Nick Stratman completed the Knights baseball team’s three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday with a tworun home run as the Knights earned a Northern Illinois Big 12 East win against Sycamore, 3-2.

All three runs came after two outs as Joe Panico walked and Ty Carlson notched an RBI double to the left that was almost caught.

That set up Stratman’s homer, his first and the team’s second on the season.

“Stratman just did an awesome job taking an outside fastball over the right field fence,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “He just crushed it.”

Nathan Hopkins (4-1) pitched six innings to get the win and fellow senior Nick Stahl worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh for Kaneland, which had dropped Monday’s series opener, 1-0.

“We were kind of thinking ‘Oh man, not again,’ ” Aversa said of his team’s sluggish offense. “A great pitching performance and we just can’t get anything going at the plate, then that little spark with the walk … it was nice to see us finally get that break we needed to kind of open the floodgates a little bit and take the lead there.”

Batavia 5, Elgin 0: At Elgin, Jacob Piechota threw five innings of no-hit ball and Laren Eustace had two hits and two RBIs for Batavia (16-3-1, 11-21 UEC River).

Nick Rogalski kept Elgin scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings.

Geneva 8, Larkin 4: At Geneva, Nick Derr homered and drove in three runs and Nick Porretto went 3 for 3 with two doubles as Geneva (15-7, 11-6 UEC River) built an 8-0 lead and hung on.

Montini 7, Marmion 2: At Lombard, Montini scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to hand Marmion (116, 10-1 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) its first conference loss. Zach Siewiec had two hits and Edgar Sanchez hit a solo home run for the Cadets.

A jersey with his longtime number hung there for the taking, so Wagner scooped it up.

Wagner chose 30 as a child, shortly after Ken Griffey Jr. did upon joining the Cincinnati Reds in 2000. Griffey’s popularity then transcended geography, allowing the number to quickly sprout its own memories and mystique for the Las

Vegas youth.

“When I picked that No. 30,” Wagner said, “my first game was against Bryant.”

Kris Bryant, the heralded third baseman the parent Cubs drafted second overall last June – 14 rounds ahead of Wagner – opposed Wagner in travel ball and high school before the two were college teammates at the University of San Diego.

Bryant wore No. 23 in those days, but the big league future many predict for him will have to be in different digits thanks to Ryne Sandberg.

Until that happens, Wagner prefers focusing on another

number where Bryant is concerned, one that also stems to last June.

“I was kind of [ticked],” Wagner said.

“I thought he should have gone first [overall], to tell the truth. Growing up playing with the kid Michael and seeing how Wagner well he did last year is pretty unreal. And, you know, he’s still doing it.”

Before it was released, British pop singer Lily Allen’s first album in five years, “Sheezus,” had been the subject of several controversies. One involved the song “Insincerely Yours,” which lobbed insults at harmless British models Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn, and singer Rita Ora. “I don’t [care] about Delevingne / Or that Rita girl / About Jourdan Dunn,” Allen trilled pleasantly. “I don’t [care] about your Instagram / About your lovely house or your ugly kids.”

Dunn took exception and engaged Allen in the sort of pre-release-day Twitter spat marketing departments dream of. “Insincerely Yours” is a low point on “Sheezus,” which is otherwise a tar pit of thinly veiled insults, songs that evoke Vampire Weekend and the kind of pointed pop-cultural criticism that has long been Allen’s stock in trade.

Allen got famous during – and thanks to – the brief reign of MySpace at the end of the last decade, releasing two guillotine-sharp pop albums before retreating from the business to marry and have children.

“Sheezus” plunders just about every sound that was popular when she departed, including “Paper Planes”era M.I.A., moombahton and dubstep.

Allen is a modestly regarded musician and a world-class observer of modern culture and its discontents. When she retreated into semi-retirement, she was one of a handful of

She has reemerged into a world where such self-examination is commonplace, characterized by Lady Gaga’s musings on the nature of stardom, Kreayshawn and Jessie J’s skewering of conspicuous consumption and Ke$ha’s winking party rap.

Hip-hop has always been about hip-hop – its beefs, its lifestyle, its shifting hierarchies. Country music is partially lodged in the swamps of bro-country, in which every hit song about barefoot girls and guys in pickup trucks recalls every other hit song about the same thing and has thus become unintentionally self-referential.

Pop’s meta moment may have peaked with the ascent of Lorde, whose breakout hit, “Royals,” took aim at some of Allen’s favorite targets – the excesses of hiphop, the disconnect between real life and the unreachable fantasy of pop songs – but Lorde used a scalpel, and Allen uses an axe.

title track. Rihanna, Katy Perry and Beyoncé also are mentioned, all rivals whom she must vanquish. (“The game is changing / Can’t just come back, jump on the mike and do the same thing.”) It’s of a piece with the album’s first single, “Hard Out Here,” another examination of the unreasonable expectations placed on female pop singers. In the accompanying video, which plays like a lecherous Instagram of a 1998 McG video, Allen gets plastic surgery and makes fun of Robin Thicke while her barely clad black backup dancers twerk and pour champagne on each other’s backsides in slow motion. It was an insincere finger wag that objectifies video girls to demonstrate how wrong it is to objectify video girls. It deserved every bit of criticism it got.

For Allen, the line between cultural broadside and personal attack is thin and flexible. “URL Badman” is a portrait of a basement-dwelling Internet troll so vivid that you can practically see the Cheetos

stains on his fingers. The song ends with a bleating goat. Allen spends much of “Sheezus” railing against bloggers, critics and lesser supermodels, and generally – and unadvisedly – punching below her weight.

“Sheezus” works best when it’s personal, when it plumbs the conflict between work and family, between the tug of motherhood and the pull of fame.

A sometimes uneasy ode to domesticity (“Staying home with you is better than sticking things up my nose,” Allen tells her husband), it’s also the most affecting pop album about marriage and new parenthood since Liz Phair’s long-ago “Whitechocolatespaceegg.”

The idea that Allen makes a better domestic goddess than a cultural observer was previously unthinkable.

It could be that the oncedeft satirist now content to bludgeon has lost her way, or it could be that pop music in the late spring of 2014 is already eating itself.

For example: In her new video for the otherwise forgettable track “Hello Kitty,” Avril Lavigne, another star of the ’00s looking to make a comeback, moves listlessly against various backdrops, surrounded by Japanese dancers.

It’s a familiar patchwork of borrowed awful: The dancers of another race used as props (Miley Cyrus), the fetishization of Asian culture (Gwen Stefani), the regrettable haircut (Skrillex), the ill-fitting famous co-writer (Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger).

It’s an inadvertently comical commentary on trickle-down pop culture, as if every blighted musical trend from the past 15 years sought revenge at the same time.

Even Lily Allen could never have dreamed it up.

‘Twerking’ is just the latest dance fad Thriving on pressure Dear Abby: I’m the happily married mother of two teenage boys. The other day I overheard my older son (age 17) talking with a friend about “twerking.”

I have never heard of it and now I’m worried. Is twerking a drug term? Is it similar to “tripping,” “getting high” or “catfishing”?

My 17-year-old is supposed to go to Princeton next year on a sports scholarship, and I’m afraid “twerking” will derail him from his charted path. Thank you for any advice you may have. – Troubled Mom in Connecticut Dear Mom: Don’t panic.

“Tripping” and “getting high,” as you already know, refer to altered states of consciousness as the result of using drugs.

“Catfishing” is something else.

It’s pretending to be someone you aren’t, creating a false identity on social media, usually to pursue a deceptive online romance.

The “twerking” your son was referring to is a dance move recently made famous by Miley Cyrus – in which the dancer (usually female) gyrates in a provocative, semi-squatting position that involves thrusting

Dear Abby: My husband and I are not big fans of his best friend’s wife. “Aracely” is extremely ill-mannered. She never says thank you, didn’t even write thank-you notes for their wedding and baby showers, and when we’re at a restaurant will loudly announce that the food was “disgusting.”

Aracely claims our baby “cries too much.” She arrived at my son’s second birthday party with a hangover and so much more. She claims she doesn’t observe our “Southern ways” because she comes from South America and has been in the United States for only eight years.

etiquette book, but he said it would be rude. I disagree. I think it would nullify Aracely’s argument that she doesn’t understand our “Southern” manners. Do you agree that it would be rude? – Mannered Southern Gal Dear Southern Gal: Sorry, but I do agree, because the gift would be given with malicious intent, and I’m pretty sure that while Aracely lacks polish, she isn’t stupid.

Her problem isn’t that she doesn’t understand good manners because she’s from South America. I have met individuals from South America who are educated, cultured and whose manners are refined. Obviously, Aracely does not come from this kind of background. ONLY if you could pull it off without sounding catty, the next time she hauls out the excuse for her deplorable manners, you might “offer” to buy her an etiquette book “so she can learn the ways of her adopted country” – but don’t expect her to take you up on it.

Take note of these risk factors for suicide Dear Doctor K: My husband suffers from severe depression, and I’m worried he might take his own life. How do I know if my fears are warranted?

Dear Reader: Most people who commit suicide are depressed.

But most people who are depressed do not commit suicide.

We can’t predict who will commit suicide, but experts observe that certain factors increase a person’s risk of suicide.

• Family history. People with a close blood relative who has committed or attempted suicide have a much higher than average risk of suicide. The risk of suicide also is higher if close relatives have had a history of any type of mental illness or violent acts.

• Access to guns. Having a gun in the home makes suicide more likely.

• Substance abuse. Alcohol or drug use can erase inhibitions and anxiety that might help keep suicide at bay.

• Previous attempts. People who have attempted suicide are more likely to commit suicide than those who haven’t tried it before.

• A significant life change. A change in a person’s life can also

• Setting affairs in order.

Finally, there is a warning sign that is paradoxical and dangerously misleading. Has your husband recently sorted out his finances, given away mementos, or called or visited loved ones?

Along with these activities, has he seemed calmer and happier lately?

Of course, you want your husband to be happy. But if he seems suddenly happier and is doing things that people do as they

approach the end of their life, be really worried. Rather than being a sign of returning health, his happiness may indicate that he is at peace – after having made a final decision.

A friend of mine lost his wife just this way. After many months of suffering, she finally seemed happier. She stopped seeing a psychiatrist, which he also interpreted as a very good sign. Then one day the unimaginable happened, and he was devastated.

Look out for the factors I’ve discussed. If you believe your husband is suicidal, seek help immediately: – Talk with a doctor or a mental health professional. Very often, treatment eases or eliminates suicidal urges.

– Call or encourage your husband to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273TALK (8255).

– Encourage your husband to discuss his feelings with you and other trusted confidants.

Dr. Wallace: I’m now in the 11th grade and considered a “bright student.” I’m planning to attend a college or university in the fall of 2015.

I’ve read that some colleges and universities will permit selected students to graduate in three years instead of four. This is made possible when a student takes an additional class or two each of the six semesters of undergraduate work. I’d really like to be able to do this type of program because I want to earn my Ph.D. as fast as I can so I can become a college teacher in the field of psychology.

My counselor isn’t in favor of this three-year degree program because she thinks it places too much pressure on the student. I feel just the

But unless funding is a concern for the fourth year, I would encourage you to opt for the traditional four-year program. This will allow you to participate in the full range of social and cultural activities as well as the academic experiences that a college or university life presents.

I earned an undergraduate degree in a standard four-year program. Later, since I was married and a parent, I finished a standard twoyear master’s degree in one year (two semesters and one summer session) for financial reasons, but it wasn’t easy.

The doctor’s degree in educational philosophy took part of four years to obtain. I earned it while I was a high school principal, taking classes in the evenings, on weekends and during summer vacations.

The most challenging degree was my undergraduate degree, and earning a doctor’s degree was the least challenging. This is the reason I encourage you to take four years to earn your bachelor’s degree.

Elburn Station project now in motion KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Large spools containing orange cables have been sitting along Anderson Road, just south of Route 38, in Elburn.

Digging is going on nearby, as workers move to relocate a fiberoptic cable that must be shifted as part of the project that will move and then extend Anderson Road – which currently stops at Prairie Valley Street – south to Keslinger Road. The plan includes a bridge that will provide a key crossing of the busy railroad tracks in town.

The cable relocation is part of what ShoDeen President Dave Patzelt called “some of the nonglamorous work” associated with the Elburn Station project. That work is underway, and Patzelt provided an update last week at the Masonic Lodge on Route 47, during the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon.

Elburn Station potentially could bring more than 2,000 new homes to the village over 20 years, in an area near the Metra Station.

Patzelt expects the Anderson Road extension project to be completed by fall 2015.

He said the construction of homes at Elburn Station is expected to start in spring 2015, though Patzelt said the company cannot close on a sale until the road is open. He said there has been interest in the Keslinger Road area, includ-

“It’s sparking a lot of business interest, which to us, is a very good sign,” Patzelt said.

Patzelt talked about the amount of dirt that will be needed to create the bridge.

That brought a question from Jack Hansen, the chamber’s ambassador, that has been asked around town – if dirt is needed, why not use some from the giant mounds of dirt that sit near Kaneland High School? Patzelt said that would cost as much as five times

more than simply using the dirt that is near the Elburn Station site.

Asked what kind of commercial developments might be established near the train station, Patzelt said he thought there could be mixed-use buildings, perhaps retail or an office, with residents living in parts of the buildings. Perhaps there would be markets, dental offices, a dry cleaner or a governmental office.

Education in Action Spring Concerts Last week, McDole students participated in several spring informance concerts. An informance is a concert that demonstrates songs, dances, and activities that students learn throughout the year during music class. All concert pieces are carefully selected based on concepts that align with the National Standards for Music Education.

The third grade concert took place on April 23rd. The third graders sang partner songs and demonstrated a variety of folk dances. Bel Canto, an extra- curricular choir made up of 4th and 5th grade students was also featured on the Wednesday afternoon concert. Bel Canto performed three choral selections including a combined piece with the current Kaneland Fine Arts Artist in Residence, Margaret Fox. Mrs. Fox is a professional opera singer who joined the Bel Canto singers as a featured soloist in Penny Tullock’s arrangement of How Can I Keep From Singing. The final concert piece, Why We Sing, included all third graders along with Bel Canto choir for a total of 150 voices.

On Thursday, April 24th, all first and fourth grade students took part in grade level performances as well. First graders sang, added instruments to literature, and demonstrated folk dances throughout their concert. Fourth graders demonstrated their recorder playing skills during their evening informance.
