Kane road projects on tap this season

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Construction barrels are out on Keslinger Road, a quartermile in each direction, and Elburn Village President David Anderson couldn’t be more pleased.

The barrels signal the progress of the Anderson Road bridge project, extending from Route 38 to Keslinger Road.

“It’s temporary,” Anderson said. “But the end result will be better, absolutely. In Illinois, we have two seasons – winter, and then we have road construction.”

The Kane County Department of Transportation has a number of road and bridge projects that are beginning or in progress for the 2015 construction season, said Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation.

“With the change in the weather in mid-April, things are underway again,” Coffinbargar said. “We are active again.”

Goose recovering after attack Family of geese soon to be released from Fox Valley Wildlife Center KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Last week, the Fox Valley Wildlife Center welcomed in a family of geese that had been in distress. According to the center, the goose family’s father had suffered severe injuries in an attack, and rehabilitation was needed.

Laura Kirk, a wildlife specialist at the Elburn-based wildlife center, said the Canada geese – a male and female, four goslings and two eggs – were brought to the center by a volunteer from the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors. Officials were told the father goose was hurt after it was beaten by teenagers in a suburban area, and that a woman witnessed the attack and chased off the kids.

Kirk said the birds were brought to the center on April 28. By next week, they are expected to be released to a new home along the Fox River.

And while the circumstances are unusual, the rehabilitation is not – Kirk said the center can be home to 300 animals at any given time. As many as 2,800 animals are brought there every year, and many are orphans.

She said some are inadvertently injured. Some have been hit by a car. Some birds have run into a window.

“It’s not something somebody does on purpose,” Kirk said.

The geese that were attacked represent a rare situation, she said. She said it’s important for people to know there are penalties for intentionally hurting a Canada goose, as well as some other animals. Under the Federal Migratory Bird Act of 1918, people can face significant fines and federal charges if Canada geese are harmed.

Annette Prince, who is with the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, said there had been complaints about kids hurting wildlife in the area where the geese were found. She said the goose had been hurt so badly it could not stand up straight.

“These birds are federally protected,” Prince said. “It’s not a small matter.”

Prince praised the work of the Fox Valley Wildlife Center. She said the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors had sent birds there before.

“It’s always important to have a center you can work together with,” Prince said.

Of the geese brought in last week, Kirk said the female goose, the babies and the eggs were fine. She said the male goose suffered “pretty severe neurological damage.”

He was given medications and kept in a cage until he was able to show enough improvement to rejoin his family. She said the goose was defending his family when he was attacked, and she said he didn’t want to be separated in rehabilitation.

“He was pretty upset,” she said, adding that “he wanted to get back out there” with his family.

She said education would be the key to preventing future incidents, saying it’s important to “teach kids and adults to respect wildlife, to learn to live in harmony with wildlife.”

Kirk said if people see wildlife animals in distress, they can call the center at 630-365-3800. Also, she said, if people see baby animals they think have been orphaned, they should contact the center before taking any action.

“We’re here to help when things like this happen … or when things unintentionally happen,” Kirk said.

Batavia police investigating robbery

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia police department continues to investigate a robbery that occurred Tuesday morning at the Batavia Pantry, 929 E. Wilson St., Batavia.

“We have several leads,”

said Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz, the department’s public information officer. “We would appreciate any information the public can give us.”

Anyone with information can contact the department’s investigations unit at 630-454-2500, Bretz said.

At 9:30 a.m., Batavia po-

lice received a 911 call from a clerk at the Batavia Pantry. The clerk told police a man came into the business and grabbed an undetermined amount of cash from the register. No weapon was displayed, Bretz said.

The offender then fled on foot through the parking lot, Bretz said. No one was in-

jured.

Police arrived and checked the surrounding area. They were assisted by a K-9 unit from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The offender is described as a Hispanic man, 30 to 40 years of age, with a thin build and wearing a hooded shirt and dark pants.

Sugar Grove TIF passes with 3-2 vote

bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – In two 3-2 split votes Tuesday, Sugar Grove trustees approved a 634-acre redevelopment plan and the creation of a tax increment financing district to promote industrial development near the Aurora Municipal Airport.

Without discussion or comment, trustees Sean Herron, Rick Montalto and Mari Johnson voted to create the village’s second TIF district, while Kevin Geary and David Paluch voted against it.

could delay to try to seek collaborative agreements with other taxing bodies.

About 30 people attended the Village Board meeting, most to oppose creating the TIF – which is a development tool that uses new sales or property tax revenue gener-

ated from growth to pay for public improvement over a 23-year period.

Among those who spoke in opposition was Sugar Grove Public Library Director Shannon Halikias, who said it would “ultimately harm the library,” by denying the library and other taxing bodies additional revenue from improvements.

Sugar Grove Public Library Board members Louise Coffman and Bill Durrenberger also spoke out against it.

“I have a fiduciary re-

sponsibility to say this is a bad plan for the library,” Coffman said. “I have a right to say this is a bad plan for me and every other property owner in the village. The only ones to gain are developers.”

Durrenberger said development would happen on its own.

“The people of this village do not want this TIF,” Durrenberger said. “We want appropriate growth.”

But others favored it, including resident James White.

“Simply put, no developer can afford to develop without assistance,” White said. “If

we want to improve the tax base, approve this TIF.” Resident Tom Renk added when other towns have TIF districts, Sugar Grove needs it to compete and attract new businesses and industry.

Resident Joseph Wolf said Sugar Grove does not have much of an industrial base and industry is about the only development suitable for the area near the airport.

“I suppose we could wait another five, 10, or 20 years … to see if developers will build without TIF financial assistance,” Wolf said. “I urge you – for the benefit of the taxpayers – to vote in favor of this.”

New era begins for Kaneland’s school board On the Web

MAPLE PARK – New member Ryan Kerry took his seat on the Kaneland School District 302 Board on Tuesday night, replacing Tony Valente at a short, but eventful, meeting at the district’s administrative offices near Kaneland High School.

Also Tuesday, Teresa Witt became the board’s new president by an unanimous vote. Witt Ryan Kerry was nominated by Cheryl Krauspe, who has served as the board’s president. Witt had served as the board’s vice president. Krauspe previously had said she intended for her current term, which is her third, to be her final term on the board.

Veronica Bruhl became the board’s vice president.

The vote on that action also was unanimous, but she was not the only board member nominated for the position.

For Kerry, along with fellow board members Witt, Pavlak and Peter Lopatin, it marked the official end of an election process that saw Kerry win the fourth and

final seat on the board by two votes over Dan Nagel.

Valente was not at the meeting, meaning he did not attend a meeting after election results revealed he received the fewest votes of the eight candidates running for the four available seats.

An item on Tuesday’s agenda called for “recognition of board service presented to Mr. Tony Valente,” and board members said Valente would receive a gift to commemorate his time on the board.

“We have 76 projects or plate-spinning in various stages of engineering land acquisition or construction,” Coffinbargar said.

Among those making progress will be the Anderson Road project on Elburn’s east side, he said. Work has been underway for more than a year.

“It’s a great project, primarily federally funded,” Coffinbargar said. “It’s a new grade-separated crossing over the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Elburn. Approximately 105 trains cross the grades at Illinois 47, which equates to three hours a day when the gates are down.”

The bypass will provide an alternate route for emergency responders, school buses and commuters, he said.

Another project for this year is at Fabyan Parkway at Kaneville Road in Geneva and involves turn lane improvements and channelization of the intersection, he said.

Other projects include: • Replacement of the Jericho Road bridge over Blackberry Creek near Sugar Grove.

• Widening, resurfacing and channelization of the intersection of Kirk and Douglas roads in Batavia.

“The village is excited that the county continues to be progressive in the maintenance of the infrastructure within the county that also affects the village,” Johnsen said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Anecdotally, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and others with his office knew pre-trial diversion programs worked, but a recent study confirmed it.

“The results are outstanding,” McMahon said, noting the data “should encourage other jurisdictions to consider diversion programs.”

In a partnership with Aurora University and the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office studied the recidivism rate for participants in the diversion program for nonviolent first-time offenders of such crimes as retail theft, burglary and criminal damage to property.

McMahon – along with Michelle Halbesma, who leads the deferred prosecution program, and Brandon Kooi of Aurora University – shared the results Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

The study examined cases of 317 felony participants randomly selected from 1,070

participants between 2005 and 2010. It found about 92 percent of those who successfully completed the deferred prosecution program did not have a subsequent conviction in the three years following completion, McMahon said.

Additionally, the recidivism rate was about 19 percent for those unsuccessful in the deferred prosecution program, meaning about 81 percent did not return to the court system, Halbesma said.

In comparison, she said, research has shown those with traditional court sentencing have a recidivism rate between 40 percent and 60 percent.

“We were just thrilled with the results,” Halbesma said.

The data validates the investment made, McMahon said, noting the program has had “great buy-in” by various judicial system personnel and local police departments.

“Every department across the county has been incredibly supportive of the program,” he said.

A lot of factors contribute to the program’s success, McMahon said, but he pointed to the community panel as a key component. The panel in-

Batavia taking fresh look at proposed pedestrian crossing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City officials and staff will continue to look at ways to improve the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists trying to cross the busy intersection of Batavia Avenue (Route 31) and Houston Street.

New accessible sidewalk ramps, signage and a raised concrete median have been proposed for the intersection.

In 2012, the city received federal funding for pedestrian crossing improvements to eight intersections along Routes 25 and 31.

Batavia aldermen at a recent Committee of the Whole meeting recommended that the city not pursue pedestrian crossing improvements at Batavia Avenue and Houston Street after Stan Oke, the owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station – located at the southwest corner of the intersection – voiced concerns the proposed concrete median would significantly impact access to his business.

At Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac said she would like to see continued discussion about the project, which the Batavia Bicycle Commission has backed.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff, who works at Batavia Avenue Mobil, said Oke is not against some sort of cross-

walk at the intersection.

“He is opposed to this design,” Wolff said.

Fourth Ward Alderman Susan Stark said there has been a “lack of communication” about the project. Oke had told Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm that he had not been informed about the project details during the design process.

“I would propose we have

more fleshed-out discussion,” Stark said.

Aldermen recommended bringing the issue back to committee level for more discussion. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Illinois Department of Transportation officials will listen to what the city has to say.

“I have talked to IDOT, and they are willing to talk to us about this,” Schielke said.

Hardware restaurant planned at corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street

Parker Grabowski has applied for a special-use permit to build the Hardware restau-

rant at the northwest corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street in the Orchard Commons shopping center. He wants to open a full-service restaurant and brewery.

Village staff has recommended approval of the plans with several conditions, including that a 5-foot-wide walkway linking the brewpub

entrance to a crosswalk on Madison Street be installed.

According to a staff report from North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth, plans call for the construction of an 8,338-square-foot brewpub, which would include outdoor dining. The brewpub operation would provide prod-

uct for the proposed restaurant, as well as for Grabowski’s other restaurants, Toth stated in the report.

Grabowski intends to produce up to 3,000 barrels at the brewpub a year, Toth said.

Once demand exceeds a certain threshold, Grabowski plans to construct a separate microbrewery on adjacent

Kaneland students start Latin American club

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – One of the latest Kaneland High School clubs is planning a variety of activities next year to help Latino students.

Students at the school in late March formed a Latin American Student Association.

The group is focused on making people more aware of Latino culture and is open to all students at the school, said Aylin Arvayo, the association’s president.

“A lot of people have misconceptions about what a Latino is,” Arvayo said.

The association plans to have a series of field trips and events, including some with and to Northern Illinois University.

A total of 12 students in the group met Friday in DeKalb with Don Bramlett, the adviser of the Society of Hispanic Engineers, and Luis Santos Rivas, director of the Latino Resource Center at Northern Illinois University.

Various Kaneland students in the past few years have attended part of the annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute in Chicago, said Rosemary Wisniewski, the association’s adviser and a mathematics and ESL teacher at Kaneland High School.

After Lowe, Dryden and Dremel were sworn in, the board re-elected Dremel as board president. Dremel said she appreciated the board’s vote of confidence in her in electing her to serve another two years as president.

In addition, board member Jason Stoops was elected vice president.

Outgoing trustee Gregg Hodge, who did not run for re-election after four years on the board, had been the board’s vice president.

When asked what he will miss most about being on the board, Hodge said he will miss “the great people that are truly compassionate about what they do.”

Eight candidates ran for three seats on the board. Melanie Impastato lost her bid to retain her seat.

Any untarnished parts can be torn off and recycled. · Household Glass- These items can be dangerous and should be left out of recycling. · Wet Paper- This makes recycling difficult or impossible and should be disposed of with trash. · Milk and Juice CartonsSome communities will not accept them because of the thin wax coat. · Baby Diapers · Aerosol Cans- These are classified as household hazardous waste and must be disposed as such. · Ceramics and Pottery · Paint, Pesticides, Automotive Fluids, Gasoline, Kerosene and Car Batteries- These items should be disposed at a hazardous waste disposal facility. · Automotive Parts and Scrap Metal- The items are too large for recycling equipment. · Hypodermic Needles

CAMPTON HILLS – The place of many contentious Campton Hills Village Board meetings over the past few months was instead bittersweet and joyful on Tuesday.

That place was the Campton Township Community Center, where some of the village’s elected officials and employees had their last meeting and where some newly elected ones began their first meeting after the earlier meeting on Tuesday adjourned.

Village staff members, trustees and some residents paid tribute to outgoing Village President Patsy Smith, who ran as a write-in candidate in the April 7 consolidated election. She lost to trustee Harry Blecker.

Braithwaite and outgoing trustee Jim Kopec were among the people to receive certificates of appreciation on Tuesday from Smith.

Smith herself received various gifts from the village and its trustees, including Blecker. His words of advice to Smith were that unlike him, she should spend more time with her grandchild that lives out of state.

The organization is set to present its Community Involvement Award to him at the 2015 International Public Works Congress and Exposition in Phoenix, Arizona, in August. Schoedel, along with his wife, Lisa, is a recent recipient of CASA Kane County’s Children’s Champion Couple award. His other philanthropic endeavors include raising money and awareness for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Naperville Area Humane Society and providing two academic scholarships to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis since 2003. He joined Kane County in 1997 and was appointed county engineer in 2003.

Today is the one-year anniversary of when Hughes, a North Aurora resident, had surgery to remove the brain tumor, or as much as doctors could. She then received radiation and is now receiving chemotherapy treatments.

GENEVA – Geneva Park District officials recently held a ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of work to restore the front porch of the historic Peck House to its original design and to redevelop the front and back rooms on the first floor for museum exhibits and welcome area.

The district received a $98,000 Public Museum Grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the work, according to the park district’s budget records.

The 1830s farm house’s front porch historic renovation was completed in September and is open to the public at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Fortunately, research shows parents have a high degree of acceptance of the need for oral polio vaccines, although suspicion and distrust still linger in some places.

Pakistan is rallying. There have been only 22 cases so far this year, compared with almost 60 at this time last year.

Violence has abated, at least

in the past month. Emergency operations centers, an important innovation to help monitor the virus, have been set up.

Experts also applaud another recent tactic, the recruitment of female volunteers to work on vaccination in their own communities with approval from local religious and tribal leaders. This approach seems to be making headway in previously inaccessible areas.

Pakistan’s political leadership also has vowed a renewed campaign.

In the end, the only metric that really counts with polio is getting to zero. The world has never been closer. Pakistan could do much to push this disease into the history books.

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It took both teams awhile to wake up Tuesday night as St. Charles North and Batavia met in the first game of the girls soccer Tri-Cities Night at Geneva.

The North Stars took advantage of their opportunities, beating Batavia, 3-0, to earn their ninth straight win.

North (14-2-1, 5-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) got a goal from Katy Kusswurm just before halftime, and freshman Gia Wahlberg had a goal and an assist in the second half to help the North Stars remain undefeated in conference play.

“We had a super strong weekend, and we wanted to keep it going,” Wahlberg said. “One of our goals was to carry the momentum from the weekend, and I definitely think we did that.”

During the past weekend, the North Stars went 3-0 at the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa, and won the championship.

The defense was strong once again for North, recording its seventh shutout of the season. Coach Ruth Vostal said the North Stars have been stressing playing defense as a team.

“I think our team defense has been what’s stuck out,” Vostal said. “We have been working on it a lot. We got good effort from our forwards and midfielders helping back. The back line was solid again and [goalkeeper Leanne Stahulak] was very strong as she has been lately.”

After Kusswurm’s goal gave North a 1-0 lead of halftime, and despite few offensive chances, Batavia (12-4-3, 5-2) stayed in the game until there were 15 minutes remaining.

Wahlberg found Madison Kaufmann on a perfect pass across the box that allowed the sophomore forward to put the ball in an empty net.

Three minutes later, Wahlberg scored a goal of her own, scoring on a rebound off a shot from Morgan Rerko.

“I thought we actually played a really good game,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “In these games, you’re not going to get many chances.

They took advantage of some mistakes we made and that was the difference.

The Bulldogs’ best chance came when senior Karina Rosales found rare room against the North defense. Her right-footed shot from just outside the box sailed wide.

It would have given Batavia the first-half lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Scara made seven saves, a few of which kept Batavia in the game for as long as it was.

Stahulak made one save in the game for North.

North will head to St. Charles East in what will be a battle of conference

unbeatens if both teams win their upcoming matches.

“We know we are capable of beating any team we play,” Wahlberg said. “We just have to continue to work hard each time we are out there and just build off of these wins and we have been doing a good job of that.”

Saints survive scare from Vikings East plays without Cunningham in a key conference match

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles East suffered its first defeat Friday, but wanted that experience to be short-lived.

Geneva had other ideas, but a Chantel Carranza penalty kick proved to be the difference as East held off Geneva, 2-1, for the second time this season to win the nightcap of the Tri-Cities Night girls soccer doubleheader.

East (17-1, 6-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) had not played from behind often this season, but when Geneva’s Mary Landry’s shot off a corner kick scramble at the beginning of the second half found the back of the net, the Saints played a deficit.

“I think that’s the good thing about this team,” Saints forward Kyla Augustine said.

“We don’t put our heads down, we just keep fighting and try to come out on top.”

Landry’s goal broke a scoreless tie with just more than 35 minutes left in the match.

Augustine tied the score with just more than 18 minutes left when a series of passes left Kaitlyn Dziubinski with the final assist across the goal mouth that found Augustine and, eventually, the back of the net.

Saints coach Paul Jennison made his halftime message very clear, knowing that his team controlled most of the first-half possession, didn’t mean the Saints were in command. “[Geneva] sat back and defended very nicely against us,” Jennison said. “Them giving us possession gave us a false sense of security, to be honest, and I thought the second half was much better in terms of taking it to them. We knew we could cause problems for them with the speed and pace that our front three and midfield play with.”

The seventh-year head coach said the team will continue to monitor Cunningham’s injury and doesn’t expect her to miss too much time.

Geneva (7-9-2, 2-3-2) coach Megan Owens knows that although her team was on the wrong end of Carranza’s eventual game-winner, the Vikings are where they want to be at this point.

Before Carranza gave the Saints the lead for good, Landry nearly scored her second goal when her shot beat East goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield but hit the post.

East remains undefeated in the UEC River, setting up the likely conference championship game when the Saints host North on Saturday afternoon.

Jennison has coached some very good teams, including last year’s Class 3A state runner-up, but he knows that this group may be unlike any other.

“There’s really something special about this group,” Jennison said. “I hope they can keep using wins like this over the next few games and carry that into having a successful postseason, as well.”

Porretto closed out the Batavia eighth with two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice after walking the leadoff hitter on four pitches.

Geneva had to rally to send the game into extras. With one out, Justin Hasegawa grounded to Batavia second baseman Pat Greco, but Greco’s throw pulled Batavia first baseman Luke Beckmann off the bag.

Jason Croci singled, and when Batavia outfielder Joey Gross overran the ball trying to cut it off in the right-center gap,

Hasegawa went to third and Croci moved to second.

An RBI groundout by Garrett Davis scored Hasegawa.

Batavia (11-12, 10-5) took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth when Geneva starting pitcher Bret Reed balked with runners on first and third.

Jimmy Roach had entered the game for Batavia running for catcher Matt Musielak after he had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Roach broke before Reed delivered to the plate, and seeing the development, Montgomery tried to call timeout before the pitcher started his delivery home.

Reed, however, had started home and stopped his delivery seeing Montgomery stand up.

“We knew they were going

to do something,” Montgomery said. “Move. They have done that to us before.”

Lefty Ben Lynam pitched into the eighth for Batavia and was tagged with the two Geneva runs.

Batavia coach Matt Holm said he never questioned sending Lynam back out for the eighth inning.

“It was a tough loss,” Holm said, adding he didn’t have anything else to say about the contest.

Hahn said the nip-and-tuck battle was typical of a Geneva-Batavia game.

“They are close games.

They are extra-inning games.

They are tight games,” Hahn said. “We have good pitchers going tomorrow. I expect another tight game tomorrow.”

North riding high after winning Tournament of Champions

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com St. Charles North knew heading to the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa, would be a good test for the team. Playing good competition is something North Stars coach Ruth Vostal prides herself and the program on.

After beating Whitefish Bay (Wisconsin) and Lee’s Summit West (Missouri), North beat No. 16-ranked Collinsville, 2-1, Saturday to win the tournament for the fourth time in school history.

“I think that’s really hard,” Vostal said of the team’s continued success at the tournament. “Once teams start to recognize you, the target starts to get a bit bigger. That

just makes it all the more impressive for the girls to continue to compete and return and play for championships.”

North (14-2-1) has played in the Tournament of Champions seven times now, playing for the title all seven years.

With the win Saturday, North has won its past nine matches.

As good as the Upstate Eight Conference has been playing this season, Vostal knows that it is important to see teams you may not always be familiar with, such as the three they played in Burlington.

“We have a great conference,” Vostal said. “But it was nice to play another high quality school.”

North beat Batavia at TriCities night Tuesday and

will take on Streamwood on Thursday before Saturday’s showdown with rival St. Charles East.

The Bulldogs (12-4-3) also were at the tournament this past weekend, and in North’s bracket. After knocking off Ankeny Centennial (Iowa), Batavia lost to Collinsville, 2-0, but came back strong to beat Lee’s Summit West, 3-2.

Had Batavia beaten Collinsville, the Bulldogs and North Stars would have played for the Greater Burlington (top bracket) title.

BATAVIA – Tuesday’s 5-3, eight-inning victory against the Batavia baseball team meant a little more for Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery.

It wasn’t just because he twice picked off Batavia speedster Steven Busby trying to steal second, including in the bottom of the seventh when Busby represented the winning run.

“That’s the first time we’ve beaten Batavia,” the senior said with a smile. “Now, we need to go win the series.”

Geneva coach Matt Hahn said Montgomery has done a great job for the squad all year.

“What he does doesn’t show up in the box score,” Hahn

said. “He goes back there, gets beat up and does an excellent job.”

Hahn said backup shortstop Vincent MacDonald also stepped up and played a key role defensively for the Vikings (12-8, 9-6 Upstate Eight Conference River Division).

Freshman Mitchell Merges broke the extra-inning tie with a ground-rule double to right field with one out in the eighth.

His hit, which likely would have been an inside-the-park homer had it not rolled under the right-field fence, scored Justin Soeldner, running for Nick Porretto, who had led off the inning with a single to right center.

A sacrifice bunt by Matthew Simpson moved Soeldner to second.

“He was doing fine for a guy just about to turn 99 whose balance in a windup is a little shaky,” said Bob Brown, who also is former president of the Rotary Club of St. Charles.

Cougars graphic designer Emmet Broderick stood beside Guzy and helped him keep his

balance as Guzy delivered Tuesday’s first pitch. Guzy showed impressive mobility, walking through the concourse and up and down the stairs leading to the field without any assistance other than a cane.

“At my age, I’m still able to get around and not in a wheelchair,” Guzy said. “So I feel pretty good to feel the way I feel now. And like I say, ‘I’m looking forward to the 100th (birthday).’ ”

Guzy was about a month removed from turning 28 when he joined U.S. troops in Normandy, France, eight days after the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion.

He arrived in England earlier that year, a sergeant and machine-gunner who came to Normandy as an infantry replacement.

A noncombat jeep accident notwithstanding, Guzy emerged unscathed from the war, surviving the Battle of the Bulge that started Dec. 16, 1944, and ended Jan. 25, 1945. He and his unit eventually advanced to the border between Germany and what is now the Czech Republic. Guzy concluded his tour as a dispatcher of heavy equipment for the corps of engineers.

He returned to the United States in December 1945 – about seven months after VE Day – the recipient of a Bronze Star medal.

“Some of the recollection of the war is I was [darn] lucky for coming from Normandy all the way to Czechoslovakia to meet with the tank battalion,” Guzy said.

When his wife, Josephine,

died about 10 years ago, Guzy sold the family’s Brighton Park flat. He spent half the year with the Browns and the other half in Austin, Texas, with another daughter and her family.

As his hearing weakened through the years, Guzy figured it best to curtail his air travel and remained in St. Charles.

The Browns live close to much of the family, including Guzy’s two great granddaughters – three-year-old Penny and sixmonth-old Josie.

“He’s just one of the greatest guys that I’ve ever met.

He’s a gentleman plus,” said Don Thomson of St. Charles, a friend through the Silver Foxes. “And what he’s done for this country, you know ... it was phenomenal. He’s just a great guy.”

Guzy greeted Grudzielanek and mascot Ozzie T. Cougar and posed for photos before beginning to make his way off the field, up the stairs, and to his spot in an upstairs suite.

Before his trip could resume, however, several Quad Cities players emerged on their own accord from their thirdbase dugout to shake Guzy’s hand.

“I mean, obviously, anybody who serves our country is well-respected from us and everybody – as they should be – in the country. Our guys thought it was very, very cool that he came out here, he was being honored,” River Bandits manager Josh Bonifay said. “I mean, it’s his birthday today.

They just wanted to shake his hand, so they all went out.”

It was far from the last of Guzy’s plaudits. Many fans greeted and thanked him during the trip upstairs.

He smiled back and kept walking, one step closer to 100.

GENEVA – Venerable lefthander Wally Guzy visited with family and friends in the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark atrium Tuesday before Cougars officials summoned him.

“I hope I’ve got one good one left,” he said. “You don’t use this arm for a long time, and then you’re required to throw a pitch.”

Coming as no surprise to his family, Guzy, a St. Charles resident, was being modest.

He practiced with his daughter and son-in-law ahead of his ceremonial first pitch before the Cougars’ matinee against Quad Cities, an occasionally overlooked act that quickly assumed added notoriety.

A World War II Army veteran who served under storied Gen. George S. Patton, Guzy ushered in his 99th birthday with a two-hop strike to Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek.

Guzy stood a few paces in front of the mound while Grudzielanek crouched just in front of the plate. The memory is sure to out-travel the pitch’s path.

“Unreal. Unbelievable,” Grudzielanek said. “It’s always an honor to do that.”

Guzy welcomed much of his immediate and extended family for the event. He already was planning to attend the game as part of an outing with the Silver Foxes senior group from St. John Neumann Catholic Church in St. Charles, but a gesture from his daughter, Diane Brown, transformed Guzy into a guest of honor.

Brown contacted the Cougars before the season and found the front office to be exceedingly receptive to the idea of her father throwing a first pitch. That was more than enough motivation for Guzy, a Brighton Park native who appeared wearing a jacket of his favorite team, the White Sox, and will be a guest of the club July 2 for its Military Appreciation Night.

BEN BARNES Kaneland • Senior • Boys track Why he was selected: He won the high jump and finished third in the long jump to help Kaneland win the Crystal Lake Central Invitational Kaneland senior and Illinois-commit Ben Barnes returned from an injury and made an immediate difference. Barnes’ presence is something that motivates his entire team, and when inserted back into the lineup this past weekend, coach Eric Baron thought it helped every Knights team member step up their game to help Kaneland win the 13-team invite. Barnes, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to discuss his return from injury.

Here’s an edited transcript: How did you deal with not being able to compete?

It wasn’t fun. I wanted to practice every day and be out there but everyone was telling me that it wasn’t worth it to risk any further injury. It happened at the beginning of the season and our main focus is the month of May. That’s when we have our big meets. So until this point I just iced a lot and did what I needed to do to get back.

Did you expect to be at that high of a level right away?

I wasn’t expecting to do what I did

in the long jump. I was just happy to be out there and wanted to get my legs under me. It was a good feeling to get back out there and be with my teammates. I’m way ahead of where I was last year with my distances with not much practice really. That gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of this year.

If you could be a professional athlete in any sport, but your own, what would it be and why?

Probably basketball. It’s my second favorite sport and I used to play it a lot.

I think playing professionally and living that life would be pretty cool.

Do you have a nickname? What is the significance?

Everyone at school calls me “Buii (pronounced Boo-E)”. Before I was adopted, I lived in Vietnam. My name was Binkahn Buii, so that’s what everyone calls me in the hallways at school and stuff.

What are you looking forward to most about summer?

Spending time with everyone before we all go away to college. It’s kind of one last time together before we all go away.

ST. CHARLES – A recent string of nail-biting matches prompted St. Charles North boys tennis coach Sean Masoncup to joke about Jack Callaghan and Alex Gruber’s penchant for taking years off his life.

Tuesday’s three-set tiebreaker victory against the St. Charles East tandem of Jackson DeJure and Tim Boles proved no different for North’s No. 4 pairing, but this time, Masoncup wasn’t laughing.

The result sealed a 5-2 victory against the Saints, marking North’s fifth Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual victory in as many tries.

“That’s been our motto all year long: Figure out a way,” Masoncup said. “I don’t care how it is. I don’t care if it’s ugly. I don’t care whatever it is. Just figure out a way to win.”

East fell to 3-1 in league duals, but still had a chance to win with the No. 4 doubles match and a gritty match between Saints freshman Kevin Schreiner and North Stars junior Matt Kramer at No. 2 singles still ongoing.

Kramer won, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

“Close matches,” East coach Rob Livermore said.

“The scorecard didn’t say it at the end of the day, but we’ll be back. We’ll be ready at conference tournament time.”

ADVICE Melodramatic relationship should be ended Dear Abby: My boyfriend of 10 years, “Scott,” and I separated last year. I was pregnant and hormonal at the time, and told him we would never get back together. We went a month without contact, then reconnected.

While Scott was in the process of working things out with me, he had a girlfriend. He made it seem like not a big deal, but apparently it was more serious. He told her she was the love of his life and he didn’t want to lose her, etc.

When our daughter was born five months later, he told me he was done with the other woman. They talked for a month after our baby arrived and then he cut her off.

I recently found some old messages between them, and my heart shattered all over again.

I have expressed my concerns to my doctors and even my therapist.

I don’t think they believe me or understand the extent of my problem.

Probiotics may help counter harmful bacteria Dear Doctor K: I took an antibiotic before having some dental work done. I ended up in the hospital with severe diarrhea caused by something called “C. diff.” I was told it was a kind of bacteria, but aren’t antibiotics supposed to kill bacteria? Can you explain?

Dear Reader: You heard the doctors correctly: “C. diff” is shorthand for a bacterium known as Clostridium difficile. It lives inside our intestines, along with trillions of other bacteria. Normally, the harmful C. diff bacteria are far outnumbered by other bacteria in our intestines. These other bacteria keep C. diff under control. For this reason, we’ll call them “good” bacteria.

This can change dramatically when a person takes an antibiotic. Why? Just as there are many different types of bacteria, there also are many different kinds of antibiotics. No single kind of antibiotic kills all types of bacteria. Your doctor knew the kind of bacteria that grow in your mouth and can cause some people problems after dental work. You took the antibiotic he chose, and the potentially dangerous mouth bacteria were killed.

But the antibiotic traveled

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff throughout your body. It probably also killed some of the “good” bacteria in your intestine, while not killing C. diff – allowing C. diff to multiply like crazy.

In most cases, the result of a C. diff infection is a mild case of diarrhea that goes away quickly after the antibiotic treatment ends. But more severe cases can result in prolonged abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever.

In some cases, diarrhea is so frequent that the person becomes dehydrated. Severe infections are more common in older people and in people who are hospitalized.

Treatment begins by stopping the antibiotic that triggered the C. diff in the first place. Then the doctor will prescribe another antibiotic that does kill C. diff. But C. diff is a particularly hard kind of bacteria to kill. It has become resistant to some antibiotics – and it has the capacity to hide from them, lay low, and then cause a relapse.

A newer treatment approach

transplants feces from a healthy person into the colon of a person with a C. diff infection. We’ve talked about that in this column before. As a result, the diseased intestine becomes repopulated with normal, healthy bacteria.

Until recently, a fecal transplant was done through an enema or a colonoscopy. Neither is pleasant. Late last year, researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital purified and froze fecal extracts. They placed them into clean and odorless capsules that could be swallowed.

It seems to work, and it’s safe.

In the future, if you must take an antibiotic, consider taking a “probiotic” as well. Probiotics are living bacteria that you ingest to improve the balance of bacteria in your gut. Yogurt, buttermilk, miso and soy beverages are all good sources of probiotics. You can also buy probiotics in pill form. There is some evidence that probiotics may reduce the risk of developing C. diff if you take an antibiotic.

At the bridge table, it can be a mistake not to make an honor-able play when one is available – as in this deal. South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace. What should East discard?

North, with six-card support, should shut his eyes and bid four spades. Who knows who can make what? East wonders if his side can do well in a minor, especially as North’s jump to four spades suggests that West has some minor-suit cards, but the vulnerability is unfavorable.

If East does bid, four no-trump should show both minors, not be Blackwood. Note that five clubs can be made unless the defenders immediately take their three diamond tricks.

It is all right to discard a spot-card, but it is much better to signal with an honor-card – partner won’t miss it. Here, East should pitch his club king, top of touching honors.

This makes it easy for West to cash another heart trick and the club ace before leading a second club for down one. On any other defense, declarer has at least 10 tricks: six spades and four diamonds.

True, if East discards the club eight before the club three, this ought to persuade West to shift to clubs. But why not make partner’s life easy?
