Recount finds one more for Kostelny

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The discovery recount Monday between judge candidates uncovered one early voting ballot that should have gone to Kane County Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny instead of Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

Tegeler voting ballot and Kostelny were both seeking a vacancy that will be left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6.

Associate judges are appointed, circuit judges are elected.

The Kane County recount covers 16 precincts.

The first part of the discovery recount was done late last month at the Aurora Election Commission covering two precincts.

In that recount, one ballot that was marked with a check mark became an issue.

While Tegeler attorney Ken Shepro said the ballot clearly shows the voter’s intent, Kostelny attorney John Countryman said it is not that simple.

“I stood by that machine,” Countryman said. “They put it in 10 times and it rejected it every time.”

In any case, the discovery recount has not shown enough votes to change the outcome of the election, Countryman said.

If enough votes do come up that could change the outcome, Countryman said, nothing changes unless a candidate files for a full recount.

The deadline for his client to file would be May 19, he said.

No charges filed in Rotolo ‘sexting’ incident

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia police announced Monday they will not bring any criminal charges against Rotolo Middle School students who police said were involved in a “sexting” incident.

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz on Monday said the department decided that educating the students on the proper and improper use of social media was a better idea than charging them.

Police had been investigating the case of inappropriate nude images that police said were taken by Rotolo Middle School students of themselves and shared with other students.

Six or seven students sent photos of themselves through cellphone text messages, Bretz said. Between 20 to 24 students received the photos.

Those boys and girls who were involved in the incident are between 11 and 14 years old, Bretz said.

“All the parents of the students that were involved in the incident were very concerned,” Bretz said. “Some were shocked. They were planning on having serious discussions with their children.”

The school district was made aware of the images April 29 after a Rotolo Middle School student let a staff member know that some inappropriate images of classmates may have been distributed through social media, school officials have

Trustees decide not to repair North Aurora Activity Center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village trustees Monday decided the North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway is not worth saving.

The Activity Center has been closed since March 12 because of structural damage.

Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers in a report had determined there are three sections of the building where the roof joists have failed because they were stressed beyond their maximum designed capacities.

“According to the report, the damage to the joists was caused by a combination of the framing not being properly designed for dead and live loads [the building was constructed in the 1930s] and the high snowfall experienced this past season where cold temperatures did not allow for normal periodic melting,” Village Administrator Steve Bosco said.

Adding supports to all of the joists in the affected areas as recommended by Kluber is estimated to cost $219,862, of which the village’s insurance company would provide $103,146 in loss contribution.

The village’s total out-ofpocket costs would be about $116,715, Bosco said.

“I don’t think it would be the wisest decision to put money into an aging building,” Village Trustee Laura Curtis said during Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. Other trustees agreed.

The village now will solicit demolition bids and have the property appraised.

Village President Dale Berman said he doesn’t want to see the building just sit there.

“I don’t want to see an empty building there for a long period of time,” Berman said.

North Aurora Activity Center, recently found a new permanent home in the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora.

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968. Other tenants in the building included Haley’s Playground, which serves those with special needs.

Haley’s Playground has announced a new partnership with the Association of Individual Development’s Keeler Center in Aurora and will be moving there.

The Friday Nite Spot – a volunteer-run activity for fourth- through eighth-grade students – also has been housed at the North Aurora Activity Center .

Parents of the students will be contacted through the school district and notified of the results of the investigation. Batavia school officials could not be reached for comment.

According to Rotolo’s handbook, students are pro-

hibited from “creating, sending, sharing, viewing, receiving or possessing an indecent visual depiction of oneself or another person through the use of a computer, electronic communication device or cellular phone.”

Under state law, it is illegal for those younger than the age of 18 to distribute lewd photos using their cellphones or computers.

Those found guilty of sexting could face supervision, as well as community service and counseling.

Cunningham used county email address for campaign

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – While a deputy in Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office was suspended for five days after using the county’s server to work on Cunningham’s re-election campaign, emails show Cunningham himself used the county server to do campaign work.

“I was wrong,” Cunningham said. “I screwed up.

There is no excuse for it. I apologize for it. I don’t know what else I can say.”

The state’s campaign disclosure law states candidates and those working on their campaigns cannot use taxpayer resources for political purposes, said Tom Newman, deputy director of campaign disclosure for the Illinois State Board of Elections.

The Kane County Ethics Ordinance also forbids the use of county equipment for campaign purposes, as well as doing political work during

Cunningham, who won the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary election to seek a fourth term as county clerk, said if the emails cost the county anything, he would pay for it.

“I have no intention of resigning,” Cunningham said.

“Nowhere in my literature do I say I’m perfect.”

Cunningham said the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has created a new policy on emails so employees are not allowed to use the county’s computers or email for anything personal.

“They set the policy for the office as clearly as I should have,” Cunningham said.

“We’re going to have a random audit of emails every other month.”

Kane County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, who lost to Cunningham in the GOP primary for county clerk, filed an ethics complaint, which is pending.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said his office does not comment on pending or possible investigations.

The Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking all emails between Cunningham and his former deputy clerk, Jeff Ward, from Jan. 1 to March 31. Ward also was a volunteer in Cunningham’s re-election campaign.

Ward was suspended for five days after he sent a campaign-related email to the Illinois State Board of Elections on March 12.

Ward was no longer an employee in the clerk’s office as of April 1, Kane County human resources director Sheila McCraven said.

Emails obtained by the Chronicle show Ward and Cunningham routinely emailed campaign-related materials back and forth on the county’s server, as well as from the county server to Cunningham’s personal email.

They include: • An email from Cunningham to Ward, on his county email, CunninghamJohn@ co.kane.il.us, that was sent at 10:39 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, which is a forwarded message from a newspaper about advertising at “special political rates … to help catapult you to the top of the polls.”

• An email from Cunningham to Ward on Friday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m., to schedule an endorsement interview with a local newspaper.

• An email from Ward on his county email, WardJeff@ co.kane.il.us, at 9:52 a.m. Fri-

day, Feb. 21, to Cunningham with a re-election flier featuring a full color photo of Cunningham and proclaiming him as “The Right Choice” for Kane County clerk.

• An email from Cunningham on his Kane County account to Ward at 6:33 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 11, regarding a forwarded message from a sign company about bus decals promoting Cunningham’s re-election.

• An email from Ward on his county account at 3:27 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 17, to Cunningham’s personal email regarding “Cunningham for County Clerk.”

The email was regarding a fine Cunningham owed to the state board for failing to file quarterly campaign contribution reports on time.

Davoust said last month that he has not heard from anyone investigating his ethics complaint.

“I’m all ears like the rest of us, wondering what’s going to become of this,” Davoust said.

Businesses cited, fined for liquor violations KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina recently enforced local liquor ordinances at a hearing involving five businesses, according to a Monday news release.

The city’s Liquor Control Commission held the hearing April 21. The businesses included Rookies All American Pub & Grill, 1545 W. Main St., Walmart, 150 Smith Road, St. Charles Bowl, 2520 W. Main St., the Thirsty Fox Pub, 104 E. Main St., and Alley 64, 212 W. Main St. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission on Feb. 27 cited Rookies and Walmart for violation of liquor control laws.

Someone younger than age 21 was served alcohol at Rookies, according to the release.

Rookies was fined $1,000 and $500 for legal fees, and its license was temporarily suspended from midnight to 2 a.m. April 26, the release said. Because of the suspension, no alcoholic

beverages were to be sold or served on the premises during those hours.

Rookies’ last liquor violation was in 2012.

Someone at Walmart sold alcoholic liquor to a person younger than age 21, the release said. The store was fined $500 and $500 for legal fees. This was the St. Charles

Walmart’s first offense.

The Thirsty Fox Pub and St. Charles Bowl each failed a March 21 St. Charles police liquor compliance check for selling alcoholic liquor to a person younger than age 21, the police department said.

Sauceda’s status as an Animal Control official is in question

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The employment status of Kane County Animal Control Interim Administrator Robert Sauceda appears to be in question.

Sauceda’s county cellphone number has been disconnected, according to Verizon. He was not at work Monday, according to a person answering the phone at Animal Control, but his office voice mail was operational.

This weekend, Sauceda, also a South Elgin village trustee, said that he cannot comment on his work status with the county.

Sauceda was made interim administrator in November at an annual salary of $65,000.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen would not comment on Sauceda specifically, but said, “I have been made aware of a personnel situation in the health department.”

“We’re looking into it,” he said. “Our research is preliminary, and until we complete our review of this personnel matter, we don’t talk about personnel matters in a newspaper. When [Kane County Health Department Executive

Director] Barb Jeffers has completed the research, then we’ll know what the situation is within that process.”

The health department oversees Animal Control. Jeffers would not comment Sunday about Sauceda’s employment status.

Kane County Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven did not return voice mail or email Robert requests for inSauceda formation.

Kane County Board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, said she received communication from two sources that she would not disclose from within the department that Sauceda had to leave Animal Control on Friday and is on paid administrative leave.

Taylor said she was angry that she did not hear about it from the county administration, instead hearing about it from outsiders.

“We were not told anything,” Taylor said Sunday.

“County staff is zipped up, and the press is on fire on this.

We should have been notified – rather than be notified via

the press or the residents of the county – [from] the administration within the county.

How are we supposed to represent our constituents when we don’t know what’s going on?”

Taylor, who lost her re-election bid in the March primary to Bill Lenert, said she is not looking “for all the gory details” however, she would expect to be notified about a high-profile county employee on administrative leave.

“We are not looking for details, just notification,” Taylor said.

In an email she sent to all board members Monday, Taylor called on Lauzen to provide information about Sauceda’s employment status.

“I feel it is your responsibility, Mr. Lauzen, to notify all of the Kane County Board members of the situation to allow us to have the knowledge when addressing any and all questions that come to all of us from all of the press elements but most importantly, our Kane County constituents,” Taylor’s email stated.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said it is not his office’s policy to comment on pending or possible investigations.

announced Monday.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy summer driving season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” Campton Hills police Chief Dan Hoffman said in a news release.

“Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone, front or back seat, who is not wearing a seat belt.”

In Illinois, all drivers and passengers must wear seat belts in all seating positions in the car, not just the front seat.

During statewide observational surveys conducted

by IDOT in 2013, the overall usage rate for rear-seat occupants was 77.4 percent compared to 93.7 percent for drivers and front-seat passengers, police said in the

Committee turns down MMA event

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – City aldermen Monday could not support an all-ages mixed-martial arts event proposed for the city’s west side.

The city’s Government Operations Committee voted 9-0 in favor of denying amplification and an E-2 liquor license for the event, which is planned for June 14 at the Fox Valley Harley Davidson Dealership, 131 Randall Road, St. Charles.

The aldermen on the committee had various concerns about the event, including Phantom Fight Promotions’ plan to hold the event outdoors and that alcohol would be served to those age 21 and older contained in a separate

area.

“I can’t condone any use outside if there’s going to be families there,” 4th Ward Alderman Jim Martin said. “I’ll be voting no anyway.”

Rob Tovar, one of Phantom Fight Promotions’ three partners, spoke Monday before the committee. Tovar said the company would return to St. Charles when the proposal goes before the City Council.

Tovar plans to revise his proposal and make the event for those age 21 and older, but still be held outdoors.

“Our Plan B is to hold this event in the city of St. Charles,” Tovar said to a reporter after the committee’s vote.

The next St. Charles City Council meeting is scheduled for May 19.

8LOCAL BRIEF Committee solicits requests for funding ST. CHARLES – The City of St. Charles Visitors Cultural Commission is soliciting requests for funding from organizations that support and promote tourism, culture, history and the arts in St. Charles.

The following eligibility guidelines will be used to determine which organizations will be recommended for funding.

Organizations must: • Be based in St. Charles.

• Be certified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 nonprofit corporation.

• Be in operation for a minimum of two years.

• Provide the most recently completed annual report and the current budget, outlining anticipated programs and expenditures.

• Provide a narrative showing how the organization’s mission aligns with the cultural commission’s mission to support and promote tourism, culture, history and the arts in St. Charles.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Older Americans Month

To the Editor: May is Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow,” focuses on injury prevention that emphasizes helping older adults stay active.

We are witnessing an increase in the number of adults reaching retirement age who are remaining strong and active for longer than ever before.

The Illinois Department on Aging advocates for older adults and their caregivers by administering programs that help older adults live independently in their homes and communities.

Without services to assist them, many of our most vulnerable would have few choices to remain independent and would find themselves forced to live in nursing home facilities. Services delivered to older adults’ homes in their communities cost the state far less than nursing home services. Illinois legislators are debating Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget proposal, which calls for maintaining the current state income tax rate.

Those who say Illinois can tax and spend less while still providing vital services for older adults are wrong. Programs such as the Community Care Program, Adult Protective Services and home-delivered meals account for more than 95 percent of the department’s general fund.

Without revenue from the current income tax rate, many of the state’s

critical services will face radical cuts.

• Community Care Program – The “not recommended” budget level would reduce the average number of in-home service units from 46 hours a month to 34 hours.

• Adult Protection Services – The “not recommended” budget level would not allow for growth from the expansion to cover people with disabilities ages 18 to 59 living in a domestic setting, and among the elderly. To live within this budget, the program would limit the cases it investigates.

• Home-delivered meals – The “not recommended” budget would not allow for the needed 54 percent increase in meal levels. A budget reduction would put more seniors in need of nutrition assistance on a wait list.

If our current income tax rate is not retained, extreme cuts will be imposed July 1. These cuts could mean we’d lose in-home caregivers for 21,000 older adults; older adults living in nursing homes across Illinois would be left vulnerable, resulting from a reduction in ombudsman visits.

We urge legislators to vote to retain the current income tax rate in support of Quinn’s budget for fiscal 2015. The governor’s plan protects families, including more than two million people older than 60 who call Illinois home.

Obama should curb deportations if Congress doesn’t act BLOOMBERG NEWS For a legislative cadaver, U.S. immigration reform has been kicking up a fair amount of dust.

Pro-immigration activists have been protesting in front of the White House and lambasting President Barack Obama as the nation’s “deporter in chief.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker John Boehner made news last month in Ohio when he chastised his colleagues for being too timid to take up immigration legislation, then made news again when he returned to Washington and took it all back, placing blame, as usual, on Obama for the presence of the stiff on Boehner’s operating table.

But Obama should give Boehner and the House more time just in case. Then, once the patient is truly, surely, undeniably dead, the president should act. He has already directed Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to review options for easing deportations. News reports suggest the administration will take modest steps, if it takes any at all. But it’s a bit late for small ball.

an failure, as well as a political one. An estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants have children who are U.S. citizens.

An additional 600,000 or so have spouses who are either American citizens or legal residents.

Most have been in the United States for a decade or more.

Many have jobs in addition to families.

These immigrants are rarely among the deported. Still, thousands of otherwise law-abiding immigrants with legal family members are deported each year, and millions live under the threat of it.

Having already deferred deportations for “Dreamers” – young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children – Obama should extend the policy on similar terms to undocumented immigrants with lengthy residencies in the U.S. and family members who are U.S. citizens or legal residents.

The president’s power to ease deportations isn’t explicit. But he unquestionably has discretion in enforcement of immigration law.

Some believe the extent of that discretion may be on par with a president’s pardoning power.

Such a broad exercise of prosecutorial discretion would surely not resolve the political battle over immigration. Indeed, it would incense the opposition and further polarize debate.

Opponents would no doubt label such a move “amnesty” – and they would be correct. But what is their alternative? The possibility that the U.S. will deport 11 million undocumented immigrants is no more than a cruel fantasy. And all sides agree that the status quo is destructive, undermining both the rule of law and immigrants’ potential.

House Republicans who object to a new class of deportation deferrals have the means to alter it. It’s called legislation. A comprehensive immigration bill, with the imprimatur of Congress, remains by far the best possible outcome. A bipartisan majority of the Senate has already shown the way; the House need only follow suit.

Government shouldn’t be in the business of “tearing families apart who otherwise are law-abiding,” Obama said. If there is a humane and credible rebuttal to that, we haven’t heard it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Representatives from HealthEngine – which bills itself as the answer to competitive health care pricing – were in Geneva on Monday for an informational meeting with Kane County Board Chairman

Chris Lauzen, some employees and a few County Board members.

“This is a really big deal,” Lauzen said. “We have a chance to innovate.”

But County Board members – who were presented with HealthEngine’s concept during committee meetings in March and April – continued Monday to question the company about its services.

The Chicago-based, physician-led group recognizes patients have a choice regarding

their health care and deserve to know the price range of a service before they purchase it, CEO and founder Jonathan Weiss said.

He said it began its U.S. launch this year.

HealthEngine aims to save its clients money by negotiating rates with health care providers – primarily imaging and surgery centers – that are lower than the rates offered by insurance companies, Weiss said.

When employees use pro-

viders with the lower rates, the county and HealthEngine would equally split the savings.

“This proposal is pay for performance,” Lauzen said.

It would not replace the county’s existing health insurance. The county is self-insured and has a third-party administrator, Blue Cross Blue Shield.

County Board members questioned how HealthEngine’s service works, why providers would be willing to

lower their rates and how HIPAA factors in. John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, requested involvement from the State’s Attorney’s Office so legal questions could be cleared.

Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit, asked for evidence that shows costs factor into decisions about medical care. She argued that people go to physicians because of their expertise.

“It is not like flying on an airline,” she said.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Fire Department is unable to determine the exact cause of a fire that caused an estimated $5,000 in damages to a school bus Sunday night.

“We will leave it as undetermined, but we believe something electrical was in-

Conference builds collaboration among regional arts organizations ST. CHARLES – The Chicago Suburban Arts Conference hardly had begun Saturday before organizers began fielding questions about whether it would become an annual event.

“If not that, at least biennial,” said Amanda Harris of Core Project Chicago and Side Street Studio Arts.

Held in businesses in the First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles, the arts conference aimed to foster a greater level of collaboration between arts organizations.

Jim Kirkhoff of Water Street Studios said the event was born out of a frustration he and others – including Harris – shared about how regional arts organizations operate without much cooperation, collaboration or sharing.

“Meanwhile, the work that WSS, SSSA and Core Project has done together has not only been highly creative and successful, but is creating an artistic bridge throughout the Fox Valley,” he said in an email before the event.

“We felt that we needed to

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The ability to bounce back from adversity without losing their resolve often separates the Kane County Cougars’ successful players from those that don’t last long in professional baseball.

Bill Bowers, the Cougars’ 90-year-old usher, is decades beyond his athletic prime, but he sets that unflappable tone as well as anybody in the

organization.

Orphaned as a child, Bowers has encountered plenty of heartache and duress, yet remains the ultimate optimist.

His sunny worldview is on display for all those who pass through Gate 3 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“I’ve never had an enemy in my life,” Bowers said.

“That’s who I am. I love people. I figure if you’re a bad person, I’ll make you good.

You’ll smile when I get done

with you.”

Bowers said his son, Dale, directed him to a Cougars usher position in 1994 as a way to help move on after Bowers’ wife, Arleen, died. In the 20 years to follow, he’s become one of the faces that Cougars fans, employees and even team members most associate with the franchise.

Bowers’ only extended absence from the ballpark came last year. He missed the entire 2013 season after a serious

health scare late in 2012, when the aftereffects of a bout with pneumonia temporarily forced him into an assisted living center.

But despite his advanced age and the perils of a baseball season – the heat, the cold, the rain and everything in between – Bowers was determined to reclaim his post and resume what he does best – connect with people.

“The name of the game is love, and that kind of love is from the heart,” Bowers said.

“You’re talking to someone, making them feel comfortable coming into the park.”

Bowers, a Bartlett resident, was born in Pennsylvania but has lived in too many cities to count, he said. Now the only surviving sibling among 10, Bowers was split from several of his brothers and sisters after his parents died, saying “it’s a lonely world” for an orphan.

“I grew up overnight even though I was a young man,” Bowers said.

Bowers said he was able to afford two years of college at Fordham University and was drafted into the army during World War II. He spent much of his adult life working in the hotel industry, then switched paths to accept a position with the RR Donnelley printing company in Chicago.

His initial duties with the Cougars included handing out lollipops to children, and he’s maintained his enthusiasm for dishing out goodies and cheery salutations.

“People are anxious to get anything, you know what I mean,” said Bowers, who was the team’s head usher for much of his tenure. “A pencil, a ball, a bobblehead or anything like that. The most important thing is always smile with the customer, if you’re giving them a pencil or you’re giving them a bobblehead. One thing is 2 cents, the other one is 2 dollars.

“The other thing is, I love kids. Dealing with kids, you smile with them, and the mothers like that because they appreciate the fact that their child has been noticed.”

Bowers is an avid baseball fan, and he doesn’t hesitate to advise players to make sure their practice habits are as enticing to scouts as their talent. He called former Cougars great and eventual major league pitcher Dontrelle Willis “the most interesting person I’ve ever met … what a gentleman.”

Bill Bowers Cougars usher Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said Bowers is a valuable consultant about many facets of the team’s game-day operation since he hears so much first-hand feedback from fans. Haug called Bowers “an inspiration” and “a great Cougars ambassador.”

“I’ve been lucky to have him a part of my life for the past 20 years,” Haug said.

“He’s a special man.”

St. Charles resident John Bukovits, another longtime Cougars usher, also has worked with Bowers since the mid-1990s; the two are now partners working Gate 3.

Bukovits said many fans asked about Bowers’ whereabouts when he was recovering from his illness last year.

Bukovits acknowledged his

own concern but was confident his partner would return.

“I knew he’d be back,” Bukovits said. “Bill’s the kind of guy who can’t sit still, so I knew he’d be back.”

Bowers not only works five-plus hour days at the ballpark for home games, but he remains deeply involved with his church – Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carol Stream – and he exercises regularly.

His passion for a healthy lifestyle sometimes prompts him to good-naturedly chide fans about their smoking. But even his ribbing is accompanied with a smile, which helps explain the response from co-workers and fans when he returned this season.

“I felt like they were all my brothers and sisters, for crying out loud,” Bowers said.

“They all come up to me, give me a great, big hug and a hello and all that. The reason I’m back, camaraderie is the best thing and friendship is the best thing. When you have friends, you have everything.

When you’re alone and don’t do anything, you’re in bad shape.”

GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars improved to a Midwest League-best 22-9 on the season Monday with an 8-4 win against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 1,873 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Catcher Cael Brockmeyer went 3 for 3 for Kane County, while Cougars cleanup hitter Yasiel Balaguert hit his first home run of the season and was among four Cougars with two hits on the night, with Jacob Hannemann, Danny Lockhart and Shawon Dunston Jr. being the others. Cougars starter Tyler Skulina threw four innings of one-run ball while winning pitcher Nathan Dorris (4-1) and Zack Godley (save) did the rest on the mound.

The Cougars outhit the Timber Rattlers (13-17) on the night, 13-7. That allowed the Cougars to withstand committing four errors compared to none from Wisconsin. The Cougars host Wisconsin again tonight in the middle game of the three-game series. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Marmion baseball team remained unbeaten in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue on Monday with a thrilling, 2-1 win against Montini in 10 innings.

The pitchers duel featured Michigan State-bound lefthander Alex Troop for Marmion and Broncos senior standout Eric Frontzak.

Troop was dominant, striking out 15, walking two and allowing only one hit in eight innings of work.

“Going for the head of the conference right there, staying undefeated on our part … that was a big win,” Troop said. “ … It really was just great overall.”

Troop also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple.

Frontzak went seven innings, striking out six and walking two. He was replaced by junior Jordan Lazowski, who was tagged with the loss.

In the bottom of the 10th, Marmion center fielder Tyler Eberth singled to lead off the inning. After two popouts, Eberth stole second, and catch-

er Brady Roberts’ deep drive to right field brought in the game-winning run.

“I told myself I had to keep waiting back on [the ball] and try to go middle, middle-right on it,” Roberts said of his game-winning hit.

Montini got on the board in the top of the first after Troop walked shortstop Eddie Bava with two outs. Senior Austin Kline then ripped an RBI double to right field, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

The Cadets answered in the bottom of the second. It started with Troop singling and Nick

Salazar coming into the game as a courtesy runner. Frontzak threw a pitch in the dirt that Montini catcher Tom Long couldn’t find, allowing Salazar to move from first to third base. Gunnar Stanke walked before first baseman Zach Siwiec had an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

With the win, the Cadets moved to 10-0 in the conference and 11-5 overall. Marmion coach Dave Rakow was happy with the way the tight ballgame unfolded.

“It was a pitcher’s duel and I’m glad we came out on top,”

Rakow said, “It’s kind of a playoff environment with two teams that are battling for conference, and I was just really happy to see that we were able to come out on top when it was all said and done.”

Garrett Fisher came in for Troop in the ninth inning. He gave up one infield single and struck out two, getting the win.

The Broncos dropped to 9-2 (second to Marmion) in SCC Blue and 14-3 overall.

The Cadets and Broncos are scheduled to square off again today in Lombard.

Changing speeds, changing eye level like any pitcher would,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “We try to put the ball in play; they played great defense today. ... It’s tough to beat a team that doesn’t make mistakes, so we kind of needed to keep putting the ball in play a little more and make them make a mistake.”

“Curtis was on tonight, he did a great job,” Aversa said.

“We were waiting for that one break for our side, and we never got it. Curt put us in a position to win.”

SYCAMORE – When Cole Nelson warmed up in the bullpen beyond the left-field fence at Sycamore Park, he knew he was going to have his good stuff for Monday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East series opener against Kaneland.

Turned out Nelson’s feel was right.

The Sycamore standout’s fastball had good location and was going right by the Knights batters, who weren’t able to do much when Nelson tossed a breaking ball up to the plate.

Nelson gave up only three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine in the Spartans’ 1-0 baseball win.

“Everything was working,” said Nelson, who improved to 4-1. “I didn’t even throw my changeup once.

From warming up in the bullpen, I knew everything was working, everything was going.”

The Knights (12-8, 7-3 NI Big 12 East) had runners on first and third in the second inning courtesy of singles by Sean Dunphy and Anthony Holubecki, but Nelson struck out Jacob Bachio and got Connor Fedderly to ground out to first to end the threat.

The North Stars’ batting order looks substantially different than it did early in the season, and not only because slugging catcher Emily Brodner is no longer with the team.

North coach Tom Poulin did some tinkering – including moving Mickey Goetz from the No. 3 slot to No. 2 and Kaitlyn Waslawski from No. 2 to No. 6 – in hopes of sparking the North Stars’ offense. He’s mostly been satisfied with the results.

“We had to do something,” Poulin said.

“I wouldn’t be doing my job if I just left it the same and we continued on the path that we were on because we were on a path to be .500. And it might not have anything to do with the lineup, but since that day we’ve been more productive as far as scoring runs.”

Among the few lineup elements that have remained steady – Northwestern recruit Sabrina Rabin is still batting leadoff

and Northern Illinois recruit Abby Howlett is holding down the cleanup spot.

Howlett’s bid for a grand slam was down-sized to a single in Friday’s win against visiting Batavia when her drive to left field smacked off the wall. Her hit turned into a long single, scoring two.

“This place, [the wind] is never blowing out,” Poulin said. “If the wind wasn’t knocking it down, she’d have herself a grand slam. I was hoping. I was trying to help it.”

Poulin would like to see his hitters rewarded by Mother Nature the way many other teams in the area are.

“It seems like very time you go to the other side of town [at St. Charles East], it’s blowing to dead center,” Poulin said.

“It’s always blowing out for [baseball at North], but very rarely for us.”

Fundraiser on tap St. Charles North’s home game against Geneva on Wednesday will include a fundraising component to fight breast cancer. The event is named “Knock

Cancer Out of the Park.”

All levels of both programs will participate, with the freshman and JV games to take place at Geneva. T-shirts are being sold for $10 as part of the fundraiser.

The North Stars and Vikings are due to play each other twice this week as North travels Friday to Geneva. The games were originally scheduled to be played at opposite sites but were switched to accommodate the fundraiser.

Spartans keeping busy St. Francis is slated to play five straight days this week – Monday through Friday – including a marquee Suburban Christian Conference matchup Thursday against Montini.

“The games are backing up a little bit here now, because of the [weather postponements earlier in the season],” St. Francis coach Ralph Remus said. “We’ll find out ... how consistent we are and if we can keep playing at a high level.”

Sly loves softball, slow pitch or fast pitch, but here’s one beef with the fast-pitch, high school game: how easy it is for runners to take second base when it’s a first-and-third scenario.

Runners often stroll to second base in no particular hurry, daring the catcher to throw down so that the runner on third can break for home.

There are multiple options for how teams can

contest a steal attempt in that situation, and many factors (the runner’s speed, the catcher’s arm, the score in the game) to take into account.

But it seems like waving the white flag in conceding second base is the norm. Sly’d like to see some teams say, “Not so fast,” and challenge their defenses to cut down runners’ sense of entitlement.

BASEBALL: GENEVA 3-4, ST. CHARLES EAST 2-7

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva and St. Charles East baseball teams split an Upstate Eight Conference River doubleheader Saturday, with Game 1 a 3-2 Vikings win and Game 2 ending 7-4 in favor of the Saints.

The Vikings started the morning fast, as center fielder Jason Croci doubled to right-center in the bottom of the first. Garrett Davis moved Croci over on a bunt, but it didn’t matter because shortstop Nick Derr launched a ball into the jet stream that cleared the fence in right field, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Saints (14-8, 10-6 UEC River) responded in the top of the second.

After loading the bases on a walk and two singles, Reid Olson singled in the Saints’ first run.

Starting pitcher Max Novak pitched seven innings striking out five and walking three while working out of several jams for the Vikings (13-7, 9-6 UEC River).

“Everyone makes mistakes. You’re not going to make every play,” Novak said.

The Saints were able to tie the game at 2 off an RBI single

by Erik Anderson in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Derr struck again doubling to right field. Saints starter Mike Boehmer was lifted for junior

Mick Vyzral. Vyzral gave up an RBI single to third baseman Ben Chally to give Geneva at 3-2 lead.

Novak was able to finish out the game, leaving two Saints on base in the top of the seventh.

East picked up its play in Game 2. Senior Brannon Barry singled in Alex Abate in the top of the first to make it 1-0 Saints. Geneva struggled on the mound, issuing five walks and hitting a batter.

“We weren’t quite as sharp as we were in the first game,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said.

The Saints broke the game open in the third inning.

Abate singled then stole second, Barry doubled and then Austin Regelbrugge and Anderson both singled in a run, making it 3-0.

The Saints tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth with an Adam Rojas RBI double and two RBI singles from Settle and Olson.

Saints Game 2 starter Adam Eck pitched four innings, giving up no runs and working out of multiple jams.

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – To say Joel Quenneville had the Blackhawks on cruise control last spring would be unfair. He had to drag his team through a firstround series after it played in virtually no meaningful games during an utterly dominant regular season. He had to match wits with Detroit’s Mike Babcock. And he picked the right time to unite Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane against the Kings and then again against the Bruins.

But compared with the early stages of this postseason, Quenneville might as well have been sitting on the bench with his feet up on the boards.

Just eight games into what could be another deep run, Quenneville has blown up his shutdown fourth line. He’s swapped Michal Handzus and Ben Smith, and moved Smith to center. He’s run through several line combinations, pulling the trigger on swapping Marian Hossa and Kane at just the right time in Game 4 against St. Louis. He handled Brent Seabrook’s three-game suspension by putting Sheldon Brookbank with Duncan Keith, rather than shake up all three defensive pairings. He benched Kris Versteeg in Game 6 against St. Louis, and surprised many by going with Joakim Nordstrom over Peter Regin or Jeremy Morin. Then he inserted Morin when Andrew Shaw was injured. He benched Brandon Bollig in Game 2 against Minnesota. And he benched Nick Leddy for the third period of that same game.

After standing pat throughout the regular season and most of the postseason in 2013, Quenneville, a notorious tinkerer, has been in his element this spring. And nearly every move has worked out.

“As a player, you get a real good sense, a real good appreciation for Joel’s ability to see those things and make those right moves,” Keith said.

“We’ve got a lot of depth on our team and our organization, and when he makes those de-

cisions, it seems like the guys who come in have come in and played well.”

Quenneville has won the early chess match with Minnesota’s Mike Yeo. With his stalwart fourth line no longer around – Smith’s on the second line, Marcus Kruger is on the third line, and Bollig is in the press box – Quenneville turned to Toews to shadow Zach Parise’s line, and through two games, the Wild’s top six forwards have zero goals.

Quenneville will have a tougher task tonight in Game 3, as the series shifts to Minnesota. As the home team, the Wild will have the last change, meaning Yeo can keep Parise away from Toews. Rebuilding a genuine checking line could help.

“I don’t think many lines, or any lines, in the league start 90 percent of their shifts in their own end, and you’re confident that you can play them against the other team’s top line, on the road or anywhere,” Quenneville said of his erstwhile fourth line. “It was very effective for us, and I don’t think we had that type of a line over the course of the last five years. It was kind of a unique situation, and … it’s kind of evolved into a different line.”

Quenneville wouldn’t say whether Nordstrom and Morin would stay in the lineup, or if Bollig or Versteeg (who’s been sick the past two games) might draw back into the lineup. Quenneville said Bollig had a “real strong regular season,” playing all 82 games, but that he needs to play faster in the playoffs. He wants Versteeg to play more simple and direct – northsouth, not east-west.

With 15 capable forwards and seven capable defensemen, Quenneville has the depth to send messages and spark internal competition, and the nerve to make drastic changes when warranted. And although he’d love to have the consistency he had last spring, he already has shown this postseason that he has no problems taking a more hands-on approach.

“It’s the coach’s decisions,” Hossa said. “And he seems like he’s always got the right ideas.”

They painted bats, frogs, rabbits, birds and other animals in their natural form, as well as fantasy animals represented as well-dressed humanlike figures. The marks on these ceramics often indicate the age, company and artist, as well as some other factory information about type of clay or glazes. What better way to suggest the origin, age and value of a piece today. Robert Bruce Horsfall (1869-1948) was an artist at Cincinnati’s Rookwood factory in 1893 when he decorated a Standard Glaze pitcher with pictures of the Toad of Toad Hall from “The Wind in the Willows,” the 1908 children’s classic by Kenneth Grahame. The finished pitcher was then sent to Gorham Manufacturing Co., where it was given a silver overlay. The well-designed piece, with a complete history, sold for $4,375 at a March 2014 Rago Arts auction in Lambertville, N.J., even though it had some minor imperfections. *** Q: I have a Lloyd Loom baby carriage that was bought for my dad when he was born in 1924. The inside has been re-covered, but everything else is original and is still in very good condition. It has glass porthole-type windows in the side of the hood, a wooden handle, rubber tires on the wheels and a brake. A metal tag on it reads, “Lloyd Loom Products” and “Method Patented Oct. 16, 1917.” Can you tell me approximately when it was built and the current value? It’s priceless to me because it was my dad’s.

A: Marshall B. Lloyd (1858-1927) was an inventor and manufacturer. He opened Lloyd Manufacturing Co. in Menominee, Mich., in 1907 and began making children’s wagons. In 1914 the company began making hand-woven wicker baby carriages. Then in 1917 Lloyd was granted a patent for a meth-

od of making a wicker-like material by weaving twisted brown wrapping paper around metal wires. He also invented a loom that wove the material, making the process much faster than weaving by hand. Lloyd Loom fabric is the name of the woven material. In 1919 Lloyd sold the patent for the process to a British furniture manufacturer.

Your baby carriage was made between 1917, when the patent was issued, and 1924, the year your father was born. Today these carriages are not considered safe to use with a real baby, so they usually sell to doll collectors or decorators. It’s worth about $300. *** Q: I have a Coca-Cola serving tray that matches those I have seen online. It’s from 1923 and pictures the “Flapper Girl.” How can I tell if it’s a reproduction or an original?

A: Coca-Cola’s early lithographed tin serving trays probably are the most desirable of Coke collectibles. An original 1923 Coca-Cola serving tray is rectangular and measures 13 1/4 inches high by 10 1/2 inches wide. It’s worth close to $400 if it’s in near-mint condition or better. Of course, most old trays aren’t near-mint, so even if yours is old, it probably won’t sell for that much. Reproductions of this tray have been made since the 1970s, some even by the Coca-Cola Co. Some reproductions are round or oval, some may be marked with phrases like

“Reg. U.S. Patent Office,” and some may show a slightly altered image. *** Q: I own a pair of barber scissors my father used to cut my hair when I was a boy back in the 1930s.

Stamped on them is, “Vogel Bros., Chicago, Ill., E-Z Edge.” How old are they and what are they worth?

A: The Vogel family, founders of Vogel Bros., say that the company has been making cutlery for 300 years.

Within the past couple of years, Vogel’s assets were sold, but family members are involved in the two companies that took over Vogel’s assets: Anvil Corp.

A: Your coin-operated combination cigarette dispenser and magazine rack probably was used in hotel lobbies or other places where a smoker might sit down to read a magazine and have a cigarette. Although it’s called a “Home Humidor,” it’s unlikely someone would have a coin-operated cigarette dispenser in their home. C.B. Howard Co. made at least one other similar dispenser, a combination cigarette machine and end table. These date from about 1931. One sold a year ago for $300.

This summer’s feel-good sports movie stars Hamm as a sports agent seeking a quick fix and a fresh start after losing his job. Desperate times lead him to India, where he recruits cricketers whom he hopes to transform into major league pitchers.

• “Godzilla” (PG-13) – An action film starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen.

With some free time now that “Breaking Bad” is over, Cranston plays the role every apocalyptic film needs: the everyman who might save humanity from a city-crushing creature.

It has been 10 years since Barrymore and Sandler played love interests in “50 First Dates” and more than 15 since they did the same in “The Wedding Singer.” History repeats itself with the story of two single parents who don’t hit it off on a blind date but coincidentally end up taking their children on the same African safari.

• “Cold in July” (not yet rated) – A drama starring Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Johnson. Up-andcoming director Jim Mickle, who made the horror movie “We Are What We Are,” helms this 1980s-set thriller, which follows a Texas man (Hall) who kills an intruder and finds himself targeted by the deceased criminal’s father (Shepard).

Gift packaging promises more than it can deliver Dear Abby: I recently went in on a gift with my friend “Ali” for our other friend, “Gena.” Ali offered to purchase and wrap the gift, a nice wallet from an inexpensive store. Imagine my surprise when Ali turned up at Gena’s birthday party with the wallet elaborately wrapped in expensive designer paper.

At first, I thought she had spent more of her money and upgraded our gift, but when Gena unwrapped the designer packaging to reveal the original wallet we had selected, I was taken aback.

It turned out that Ali had reused the wrapping paper from a gift her husband had given her, disguising our present as something it wasn’t.

Gena was clearly disappointed. Other guests who had been eyeing it looked excited at first, then confused.

I felt our gift wasn’t appreciated and we ended up looking cheap. I was at a loss for words. What would have been the appropriate way to handle the situation? Is this normal gift-wrapping practice, or did

Dear Abby: With Mother’s Day nearly upon us, would you remind your readers that stepmothers are worthy of recognition, too?

If one has any regard for the feelings of his or her stepmom, PLEASE make her day by calling or visiting her and telling her how much she means to you. And I don’t mean a phone call at 9 p.m.

I married my husband when his sons were in their late teens.

Every Mother’s Day for 14 years I have been reminded that his sons choose not to recognize me, even though our relationships are very good. (One of them is a stepfather himself.) It’s a real heartbreaker, believe me. – Giving Up On Waiting In Oregon Dear Giving Up On Waiting: If you think you are the only stepmother who feels unappreciated on Mother’s Day, think again.

I have heard from many stepmothers who have written letters that are variations on this theme. There can be reasons for it – the fact that you didn’t raise them, fear that it would be somehow disloyal to their birth mother, unresolved relationship issues or just being preoccupied.

If you haven’t discussed this with your stepsons, perhaps you should.

Or better yet, your husband should. But if that doesn’t solve the problem, for your own sake, stop brooding about it and direct your attention elsewhere.

Cut toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails Dear Doctor K: I have a very painful ingrown toenail. What can I do?

Dear Reader: It’s been my experience that toenails get a little unruly as we get older. They seem to fit the toes perfectly well for decades, and then they start doing funny things – the sides start to curl, for instance, and suddenly the nail is pressing against the skin of the toe.

An ingrown toenail is a common source of foot pain.

When the side of the nail digs into the skin, the result is pain, irritation, swelling and redness.

Swelling and redness, in turn, can be signs of infection. Your toe may also hurt more when pressed and be warm to the touch.

The big toe is most often affected, but no toe is immune.

The problem usually develops because the nails have not been trimmed properly. I wasn’t very good about keeping my toenails trimmed when I was younger, but it didn’t seem to matter.

The nails didn’t start attacking the skin. However, once I got to age 40, I noticed that I had to be careful about trimming the nails regularly.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Overly tight shoes are also a factor in producing ingrown toenails. This is more of an issue for women who wear shoes that are very narrow in front.

Shoe leather constantly pressing against a nail can change its shape as it grows.

Usually you can treat an ingrown toenail at home.

First, soak your feet in warm water to soften the nail.

Then cut the part of the nail that is pressing against the skin. Trim gently, not aggressively, or you may hurt yourself.

Once that part of the nail is removed, apply an over-thecounter topical antibiotic. If there is an infection, it may respond to the topical treatment.

Wear open-toed sandals or roomy shoes to reduce pressure on the toe.

If your toe isn’t better in three to five days, see a footcare specialist. Your toe may be infected, and you may need

to start antibiotic pills (which treat deeper infections in the toe) and have the ingrown portion of the nail removed.

If you have a recurrent ingrown toenail, your doctor can remove the part of the nail that causes the problem. This procedure can be done in the office, using chemicals.

Do not treat an ingrown toenail at home if you have diabetes.

Diabetes can impair your circulation, interfering with your body’s natural ability to heal and fight infection. If you have diabetes and an ingrown toenail, see your doctor or footcare specialist immediately.

You can prevent ingrown toenails with a few simple measures. Cut your toenails straight across, rather than rounding off the corners. Use a toenail clipper (which is wider and larger than a fingernail clipper).

Also, clean under your toenails regularly.

Teen punished for getting B in geometry Dr. Wallace: I’m an excellent student and an above-average basketball player. I was a starting player on our basketball team. I really enjoyed being on the team. Because my grade in geometry dipped from an A to a B, my mother made me stop playing basketball so I could spend more time studying geometry. I have A’s in all my other classes. My coach came over to our house and tried to get my mother to change her mind, but she wouldn’t, so now I’m off the team and spending more time studying geometry. I’m getting all A’s in the rest of my classes, but not geometry. I’m still getting a B and I’ll probably wind up the semester with that grade.

My mother talked with my geometry teacher and asked what I needed to do to bring my grade up to an A. My teacher told her that it was possible that a B was the highest grade I could attain in geometry, and that made my mother angry and she left without saying goodbye.

I feel cheated that I was forced to quit the basketball team. I know that a lot of parents would be thrilled if their teen had a report card that had five A’s and one B. Make films for almost nothing? Interesting. In this deal, though, declarer needs to break down the barriers to get to the dummy. How can he do it?

South is in six spades, and West leads the heart queen to South’s ace.

South opens two clubs, strong, artificial and forcing, then rebids two spades. North responds with two diamonds, typically 0-7 points, then rebids with a double negative, two notrump or three clubs, according to partnership preference, to show 0-4 points. South, out of ideas, takes a shot at six spades.

It is easy to get careless. If South immediately cashes his spade ace, he can no longer make the contract. Yes, the 4-0 break is unlucky, but declarer should be looking at 12 tricks via five spades, two hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. But to get three diamond tricks, he needs a dummy entry. He must use dummy’s spade eight.

At trick two, South should lead his spade jack. East ought to play low. But then declarer unblocks (cashes) his two diamond winners before leading the spade 10.

If East ducks again, South has no spade loser and is home.

Or if East takes the trick and, say, returns a heart, declarer wins in his hand, leads his low spade to dummy’s eight, discards his last heart on the diamond queen, ruffs a heart, draws East’s final trump and claims.
