Batavia hosts Loyalty Day Parade

bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Ruth Archilla pumped her arm to encourage the fire truck passenger to make the horn louder. The passenger smiled and responded with a few loud honks.

Archilla smiled and clapped her approval.

After a brief rain, Sunday’s 41st annual Loyalty Day Parade through Batavia went on as planned, featuring rescue vehicles, all branches of military service, Scouts and the marching band from Batavia High School, as well as local civic clubs, businesses, churches and charities.

“It has this small-town, simple way of honoring the soldiers,” Archilla said, as she encouraged the next truck to up its noise game with a whoop-whoop. “It’s very special.”

Among the entries were the Batavia Shrine Club; the classy cars of the Fox Valley Corvette Club; Rover Rescue, with about a dozen dogs; dancers from The Attic Christian Arts Center; and State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva.

Batavia residents Bjorn and Phyllis Holstead said

they never miss the Loyalty Day Parade.

“I should support whatever the city has,” Holstead said. “And I usually have a grandchild in the parade, though not this year.”

Bjorn Holstead said he has additional reasons for coming to the parade.

“One of my wife’s sons, Lester Foltos, went to school

with the mayor,” Bjorn Holstead said. “And, I’m a Vietnam vet.”

Bill Schrauth and his sister, Ellen Stewart, both of Batavia, also said they always come to the event.

“I live in town and always come to support the city and its events,” Schrauth said.

“I love parades,” Stewart said. “It’s a nice city gathering.”

Batavia resident Stephanie Martin came with her family to watch the parade, to wave at the participants, stand for the veterans and military and just generally enjoy the day.

“It’s a great family time,” Martin said. “It’s a good way to show our support for Batavia and support the town.”

Geneva’s Got Talent application period extended

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The application deadline for Geneva’s Got Talent has been extended to 9:30 p.m. May 11, officials said.

Applicants can audition from noon to about 4 p.m.

May 16 at Playhouse 38, 524 W. State St. Those with successful auditions can go on to perform during Swedish

Days and have an opportunity to win a $1,000 cash prize.

Applicants do not have to live in Geneva to apply.

This is the first year the Geneva Park District is partnering with the Geneva Chamber of Commerce to host the event, park district spokeswoman Traci Wicks said.

Currently, there are 10 people signed up for the audition, and the park district

hopes to get at least 50, Wicks said.

“There is no age limit, and all talents are accepted,” Wicks said. “You do not have to be a singer or a dancer.

We’re looking for comedians, jugglers, magicians. ... We encourage all to apply who have unique or individual talents, groups, couples, partners and all ages.”

The time period for auditions also will be extended,

Wicks said. So if those auditioning take longer than the four hours allotted, more time will be allowed on that day, she said.

Semifinalists and finalists will perform on the Central Stage during Swedish Days Festival on June 24, and finals will be held on June 27.

Auditions set for ‘Big: The Musical’

LOCAL NEWS Request for $100K is dropped

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Public Library officials on Monday withdrew their request seeking tax increment financing assistance from the city to help pay for a $950,000 building improvement project.

Batavia Library Board President Doug Sullivan told aldermen the library board wanted to withdraw the request to “come up with a grant that is better suited to your needs and ours.”

“We hope to work with you on a better project in the future,” Sullivan said.

The library had been asking for about $100,000 in TIF funds to pay for the project.

Tax increment financing is a tool that allows municipalities to earmark property tax revenues from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district.

At last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, six aldermen recommended approval of the request, while seven voted against it. Those in favor of the request were 1st Ward Alderman Mike O’Brien, 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wollf, 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit, 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown.

First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer was absent.

Mayor Jeff Schielke told library officials that he regretted “this whole thing came down the way it did.”

“I have nothing but respect for the library,” Schielke said.

“They are one of our key anchor tenants. They probably bring about 1,000 people a day to downtown Batavia. We’ve got something here we really need to be proud of.”

The project includes reconfiguring and expanding the library’s stairway at the corner of Wilson and Water streets.

Colleagues praise retiring STC alderman

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jim Martin said it was exactly 16 years ago when he was taken to the hospital in a near-death situation.

Doctors were doubtful about Martin’s recovery from his 1999 bout with meningitis, but Martin disagreed.

“I fooled them because I had a council meeting to go to,” Martin said Monday, which was his last day on the

St. Charles City Council after serving nine terms spanning 36 years.

Martin’s friends, family and former colleagues filled the City Council chambers to give him a fond farewell and share a few words about him.

More than one person, including former St. Charles Mayor Sue Klinkhamer, said that Martin’s words of advice to some newly elected council members were to sit down and keep their mouths shut.

Monday laughed at those stories.

Klinkhamer said that Martin made a difference in her life and that he was such a driving force in the city.

Martin was part of the group that started the Downtown St. Charles Partnership.

Lynne Schwartz, the partnership’s executive director, said that one of the first emails she received was from Martin signed “the resident curmudgeon.”

“We will do whatever

we can to continue the good work that you’ve started,” Schwartz said.

After the tributes, Martin said it’s all a matter of faith, family and friends. Among the people he thanked was his “nurse angel” and wife, Rita, for helping him recover.

Once he was officially no longer an alderman, Martin came out into the audience at the council chambers and sat next to his wife as his successor, Steve Gaugel, and returning aldermen were sworn in.

Pair step down after combined 46 years of service

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – City officials said goodbye to two long-serving aldermen Monday, as those newly elected and re-elected were sworn in.

Aldermen praised the service of 1st Ward Alderman Charles Brown, who served for 24 years, and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan, who served 22 years. Both spoke about their years on the council.

“Thank you and the citizens of Geneva for giving me this opportunity to serve,” Flanagan said.

Brown recalled that he worked under five mayors and 50 aldermen.

“What I have learned is patience,” he said. “Not all crazy ideas are necessarily bad.”

First Ward Alderman Mike Bruno thanked both for their service.

“I have a special shoutout for Chuck. He was a great mentor in the 1st Ward – we’re kind of both geeks,” Bruno said, and both put their arms out in an air fist-bump across the dais.

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra credited Brown with teaching him how to be an alderman.

Maladra said he had decided how he was going to vote on a parking issue for Oak Street. Brown challenged him a bit, asking if he’d talked to any residents on that street.

Maladra supported his own position as a “no-brainer.”

“My phone rang for a month after that,” Maladra said. “Being an alderman is not sitting up on the dais contemplating issues. It’s getting out talking to people about those issues.”

Third Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg compared their combined 46 years of service to running a marathon.

“We would be remiss if we

did not thank your spouses, Terry [Flanagan] and Mary Kay [Brown],” Kilburg said.

“The countless nights you packed up and went to meetings three to four hours week after week after week,” Kilburg said. “Your service would not have been complete without their support.”

Mayor Kevin Burns calculated that Brown spent 1,152 Monday evenings at city hall while Flanagan spent 1,056, not counting nights serving on committees, as well.

New 1st Ward Alderman Tara Burghart and 4th Ward Alderman Jim Radecki were sworn in to their council seats.

READY FOR SEVERE STORMS Preparedness training to be held in Elburn

ane County Emergency Management Director Don Bryant knows if the tornado that caused so much damage last month in the town of Fairdale in DeKalb County had taken a slightly different path, Kane County could have seen the brunt of the devastation.

“It could have gone east,” Bryant said.

Bryant said the devastation that occurred should serve as a reminder to Kane County residents that they need to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster or any other type of emergency.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, about 1,200 tornadoes hit the United States every year, and every state is at risk.

Mike Rullman, a member of the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team, suggested that residents have at least three days worth of food and water inside their house. He said that’s the minimum time of how long it could take for rescuers to get to the area, especially if transportation is impacted, in a situation such as the one in Fairdale.

“They might show up the next day, but maybe not,” Rullman said. “Getting food to you might be an issue.”

He also said residents need to be prepared for dealing with the aftermath of a disaster.

“You take care of yourself, your family, your neighborhood or your community,” he said. “You help out where you can until the first responders become less overwhelmed.

Elburn CERT holds classes for the general public on how they can prepare themselves in the event of a natural

disaster or emergency. The next classes will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 30 and June 6 at Elburn Fire Station 1, 210 E. North St., and residents can sign up by going to www.elburncert.org/ certcontact.php.

will be used by the county’s disaster management team to coordinate the county’s response to emergencies and disasters by providing a common platform that promotes situational awareness and coordination of resources.

by Chicago, Cook County and several collar counties, as well as the state, Bryant said.

To keep themselves safe, Rullman advised residents to heed outdoor warning sirens when they go off. Rullman said the sirens go off when there is a possibility of severe weather in the area, and that residents should turn to their radios or TV sets for information.

“It might not be safe to go outside,” he said.

There are apps that residents can download to their phones to keep track of severe weather. The National Weather Service has an app, as does the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Batavia Fire Department Chief Randy Deicke said there are advantages to tracking severe weather with an app rather than by trusting outdoor sirens.

“It will wake them up if they’re sleeping because it sounds a tone on their phone,” he said. “They might not even hear the sirens outside, depending on how far away they are.”

Batavia resident Jodi Mair had a bird’s-eye view of the tornadoes as they made their way across DeKalb County last month. She is a storm chaser, along with being a trained severe weather spotter with the National Weather Service.

The day before tornadoes touched down in northern Illinois, Mair was chasing storms just west of Wichita, Kansas. She knows just how close tornadoes came to touching down in Kane County.

“If you take the tornado track, and actually move it exactly 45 miles east, the tornado track would have taken it through the west side of Batavia, and then directly through Geneva and St. Charles,” Mair said. “It was really just a matter of luck. It was just a really close call for the entire Chicago area.”

As a photographer, Mair said she can appreciate the beauty of a storm. At the same time, she is well aware of the devastation it can cause.

“They’re amazingly beautiful, which is surprising to say,” Mair said. “Storms have amazing beauty to them, especially from a distance.

There’s not much that compares to the beauty of a storm, especially over wide open country.”

IDOT seeks feedback Friday in St. Charles

And representatives are coming to St. Charles this week to get it.

A listening session is set for 3 p.m. Friday at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St. It is one of several such events planned throughout the state, including DuPage County and DeKalb.

The infrastructure listening tour began in late April in Champaign. IDOT indicates the meetings are intended to

Blankenhorn said in a statement that he is impressed and encouraged by the turnout and comments thus far.

“Working together, I look forward to coming up with solutions that create more opportunities, improve the quality of life and strengthen communities throughout our great state,” he said in the statement.

According to IDOT, the meetings are being held in coordination with the Illinois Capital Development Board and will address such topics as establishing needs and priorities; improving deteriorating

TIF district on Sugar Grove meeting agenda for tonight

OBITUARIES GENEVIEVE GAY ODT Born: March 9, 1918 Died: May 2, 2015 Genevieve Gay Odt, 97, of Batavia, IL passed away at the Michealsen Health Center on May 2nd, 2015.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alden L. Odt; and her daughter, Suzanne Leung; and is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Steven) Lewis of Batavia, IL; and sons, Tom (Beverly) of Boyds, MD and David (Lu Anne) of Bozeman, MT; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Genevieve was born in Chicago, and moved to the Tri-cities as a young child. Shortly after high school graduation in 1935 she commuted to Chicago, where she met her husband during commutes to the city in the 1930’s. Alden and Genevieve married in 1941.

Genevieve then devoted her life to family, and raised four children in Geneva.

Genevieve was an active member of the Geneva Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, Geneva Mother’s Club, Geneva Garden Club, and Geneva Lutheran Church, was a Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Den Mother and Room Mother.

She loved gardening, bridge, golf, tennis and travel. Her enormous personality, wealth of selflessness and friendly smile will be sorely missed by all of her friends at Michaelson, as well as her family.

A viewing will be held at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 West State St, Geneva from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2015. On Tuesday, a viewing at 9:30 will be followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Geneva Lutheran Church. After burial at Oak Hill Cemetery a lunch will be served at Geneva Lutheran Church.

MARY G. VARGAS Born: Feb. 6, 1921 Died: May 2, 2015 Mary Guadalupe Vargas, 94, formerly of St. Charles, passed away at her daughter’s home on May 2, 2015.

She was born February 6, 1921, in Kansas City, KS. Lupe was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Charles. She was a woman of devout faith who held a special love and bond for Our Lady of Guadalupe. She made many cherished friendships through her church and employment of 30 years at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. where she retired in 1974. Lupe’s family came from humble beginnings as immigrants from Mexico.

As a child, she was raised in boxcar #3 of the 22 boxcars supplied by Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad that comprised what would become known as the Eola Camp in Aurora, IL. Losing her mom at the age of 7, she left school to care for her 3 brothers while their father worked for the railroad. With the help of her elderly grandmother, she was more than a sister and daughter - she was a “mom” and homemaker too. These loving and caring traits, which were nurtured at such a tender age, she demonstrated throughout her life with her own family and those whose lives she touched. After

growing up, she came to make her life on a farm with her husband in West Chicago, IL. After 3 months of marriage, her husband and brothers were all called to serve their country in World War II. Her younger brother Jesse, gave his life for his country at the age of 21. Though she suffered many hardships, Lupe never remembered complaining.

She often spoke of her happy childhood and a good life filled with love. Lupe will be remembered and cherished as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her 3 children, Rosalie (the late David) Fitzpatrick, Rita (the late Clif) Heineman, and Mark (Christie) Vargas; 4 grandchildren, Robin (Joel) Redman, Kelly (Jeff) Woods, Anna (Patrick) Dempsey, and Shaun Fitzpatrick; 7 great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew & Jenna Redman, Alexandra & Jeffrey Woods, Jordan (Machuca), and Ryan Dempsey; brothers, Joseph and Eugene ( Kay) Nila; and many nieces and nephews.

Teen accused of stealing from work

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man faces a felony shoplifting charge on accusations he stole from his employer, according to a St. Charles police report.

Lukas John Sebahar, 18, of the 1400 block of Weber Road, reportedly stole nearly $825 in merchandise – including a cellphone, numerous video games and beverages – from Target last month.

Police responded to the St. Charles store, at 3885 E. Main St., just before 9 a.m.

Thursday. By that time, police reported, the retailer had reviewed video surveillance of Sebahar and conducted live surveillance on him.

Recordings from April 18

and 22 included the thefts of video games and a cellphone, according to the report. Notes from the live observations included Sebahar drinking a 20-ounce bottle of water from the store during his shift and concealing video games on his Lukas John person, police Sebahar reported.

The report indicated another employee alerted store officials to his activities.

Sebahar sold the games to people he knew but didn’t provide specifics about who they were sold to or for how much, police reported.

He was charged with retail theft, a Class 3 felony, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia.

ST. CHARLES – Minutes before hundreds set out to walk along the Fox River for the annual March for Babies, Jordon Schaver thanked them for their participation.

His family – wife Kayla and daughters Faith and Locklyn – served as the event’s Fox Valley ambassador family. Faith, who celebrated her fourth birthday Wednesday, was born several weeks early and required time in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her younger sister also arrived early, though not as early as Faith, Schaver said.

“We’re just grateful for everything the March of Dimes has done,” he said. “It’s helped our family and many others, and we just thank everyone for coming out to help support.”

The March for Babies, which began and ended in Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles, is an annual fundraising walk that benefits community-based educational programs, advocacy and investments in research to find the causes and cure for premature birth.

sion director with the March of Dimes.

He said the St. Charles event raised nearly $80,000, which not only surpassed last year’s total of about $54,000 but also exceeded the fundraising goal of $78,000.

“It’s local people making a local difference,” Carrell said.

Federal prosecutors in Utah filed court papers last week seeking to dismiss charges against a man from Blackberry Township, near Geneva, alleging he sexually abused a boy during a airplane flight.

The two-page court filing states there is “insufficient evidence” against Kevin C. Matthews to pursue an indictment.

“It, therefore, is in the interests of justice to grant leave to … dismiss the complaint,” according to the filing. “This request is made for good cause and is in the interest of justice.”

The March 24 complaint against Matthews had alleged that he abused a 3-year-old boy during a Delta Airlines flight from Chicago to San Diego. He was arrested in Salt Lake City during a layover, after passengers reported their suspicions to flight attendants. The charge was federal because the incident was alleged to occur during a flight, which comes under U.S. jurisdiction, according to the complaint.

As of Monday, the judge has

not yet signed the request to dismiss the charges, said Melodie Rydalch, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Utah.

In an email, Rydalch wrote that at the time Matthews was arrested, a judge agreed there was probable cause for the federal charges against him.

Complaints are issued in developing circumstances, Kevin C. where a federal Matthews arrest warrant is needed, and while an investigation continues, Rydalch wrote.

“We don’t present cases to the grand jury we don’t believe we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt at trial,” Rydalch wrote. “In this case, after further investigation, we did not believe we could meet the high burden of beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. Filing the motion seeking to dismiss the complaint is the right thing to do and is clearly in the interest of justice.”

Matthews’ attorney did not return a voicemail message seeking comment.

Elburn welcomes new village trustee

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The village’s newest trustee took his seat Monday night, but he and other members of the Elburn Village Board will have to wait at least two weeks before voting on what had been the most significant item on the agenda.

Board members were able to say farewell to outgoing Trustee Craig Swan and welcome newcomer John Krukoff. They OK’d the staff appointments f o r a n o t h e r John Krukoff year, though that vote was not unanimous.

However, there was no discussion on an agenda item to consider and approve an agreement with the village’s full-time police officers and sergeants. Village President Dave Anderson said village officials “didn’t have a signed copy yet.” That discussion and potential approval now will wait for the next board meeting.

Among Monday’s highlights: • John Nevenhoven, the village’s public works director, discussed the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors’ call for surface transportation program projects. According to a memo from the council of mayors, funding would be available, and Elburn would be eligible to apply.

Nevenhoven suggested Elburn could use funds to extend Anderson Road from Hughes to Keslinger roads. Anderson Road is undergoing significant work, including a bridge that will cross over the Union Pacific tracks. However, the road still would stop between Hughes and Keslinger.

Nevenhoven said the extension could be achieved, with the village paying for 25 percent of the work and the surface transportation program paying for 75 percent. Trustees supported the concept.

“I think it sounds fantastic,” Trustee Pat Schuberg said.

He presented Swan with a letter and said, “Thank you.”

• Anderson’s appointments were approved, including the reappointments of Nevenhoven, Village Administrator Erin Willrett, Police Chief Steve Smith, Building Commissioner Tom Brennan and Finance Director Doug Elder. Also, he appointed Chris Gould to replace Krukoff on the village’s planning commission.

To the Editor: Is there any possibility that we might see bipartisanship with this Congress? Under the Constitution, the president and Congress handle foreign relations, with Congress having the power to influence public opinion and approve or reject legislation. For many years, the recognized axiom was partisanship in foreign relations stops at the shore.

The secretary of state has been negotiating with other major powers in the world – Germany, England, France, Russia and China – to limit the possibility that Iran can produce a nuclear bomb. Iran reluctantly entered into this effort after sanctions had seriously damaged their economy. The joint action by these powers obviously influenced their willingness to proceed and made these economic sanctions possible. After several years, at long last we have the outline of

When these negotiations were approaching a deadline, Speaker of the House John Boehner extended an invitation to the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to speak to Congress. He was known to be strongly opposed to our government’s negotiations.

The speaker was undermining the executive branch of our government and the major powers. Netanyahu gave a fiery speech with the obvious intent of getting us into a war with Iran. The preliminary agreement achieved includes provisions for the inspection of Iran’s nuclear facilities and a substantial reduction in their centrifuges.

This agreement would provide provisions that increase the time required to produce a nuclear bomb from a few months to a year or more. Public opinion polls show the public is in favor of the agreement, but they do not trust Iran. Provisions to ensure compliance are

essential. A final agreement is to be completed by end of June.

As if Boehner’s efforts were not enough, 47 senators signed a letter addressed to our enemy, Iran, stating they would not – in certain circumstances – honor any agreement made by this coalition of great powers and the United States.

It is doubtful that they had even read the preliminary outline.

This letter was written by a newly elected senator, Tom Cotton. He glibly stated that we could easily destroy their nuclear facilities. Obviously, he assumes he knows more than our top brass. They have not supported such a plan.

This whole episode illustrates the total breakdown of ordinary bipartisanship in our government brought on by the current leaders of Congress. No wonder many citizens have lost faith in government.

Neither man populates the independent Frontier League any longer, and yet to hear the other’s name instantly prompts memories of the connection. That’s “connection” as in their history and McQuail’s walk-off home run to beat Riordan’s Florence (Kentucky) Freedom in the opener of the 2013 playoffs.

On Sunday, McQuail doubled and scored the tying run before walking and scoring the winning run in the Cougars’ 5-4, 10-inning victory against Beloit, now under the guidance of Riordan, a Frontier League lifer before jumping to the Oakland A’s Midwest League affiliate this season.

Whether Riordan loses sleep during the Cougars’ visit to Beloit in two weeks remains to be seen. At this point, any McQuail reunion marks a testament to perseverance.

In 2010, Riordan took a hiatus from the Frontier League to manage the now-defunct Lake County Fielders, a Zion-based operation that then competed in the independent Northern League.

When Beloit traveled to Peoria and Kane County for a six-game road trip last week, Riordan completed an Illinois baseball geek’s career grand slam. He’s now managed in the ballparks of each of the state’s nine active minor league and independent league teams who play home games.

In addition to Crestwood and Schaumburg, the 14-team Frontier League features clubs in Joliet, Marion, Normal, Rockford and Sauget. The Highland-based Frontier Greys are a travel-only team. Kane County and Peoria are the MWL’s lone Illinois franchises.

“A lot of similarities with the leagues and there’s some differences – some subtle, some more pronounced – but at the end of the day, baseball is just baseball,” Riordan said.

Riordan pinpointed the “raw ability” of much of the MWL’s clientele – many in their late teens or early 20s and playing in their first full professional seasons – as the biggest contrast.

At the start of the match, Saints coach Kate McCullagh had to deal with a hole in her starting lineup because of illness. Then early in the first set, she was unable to record stats because the device she used to track them ran out of power.

Farace, also did not have enough power, as the Storm defeated the Saints, 25-18, 2225, 25-19 in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

“We had one of our starters home sick, but we should have been able to still handle what was given to us,” McCullagh said. “We have had plenty of people play different positions, so that can’t even be an excuse.”

In the first game, East was unable to sustain any scoring rallies. Early in the contest, the Saints scored three straight points on three Michael Carbonell kills to pull within a point of the Storm,

4-3. The junior outside hitter had seven kills for the match.

The Saints rallied again late in the contest, scoring three points on two South Elgin unforced errors and a Jack McCann (seven kills) spike, to make the score 20-15 Storm, but were unable to close the gap further.

As the growing season approaches, the rolling hills, fairways and greens at the picturesque Geneva golf course need water, which is a source of anxiety for general manager Ed Garland as he nervously awaits the recharging of the irrigation system.

Drained of water in November to prevent the underground pipes from freezing during winter, he called the irrigation system the “lifeblood of the golf course.” As it is brought back to life, it is filled only with water from the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District. There is no well water or water from a natural aquifer used at Mill Creek.

Rather, treated wastewater from the 2,000-home community surrounding the 200-acre Geneva golf course covers Mill Creek’s irrigation needs. The project is just a part of a commitment to the environment at Mill Creek and other area golf courses.

“Recharging the irrigation system every spring is a huge project,” Garland said. “We’ve got over 200 acres of turf and

I ceased apologizing for the “Rain Man” elements of my memory years ago.

I’m no savant, or even Les Grobstein. Some things simply stick in one’s craw.

Encountering a man called Fran has registered in that category for nearly a decade now, remaining in upstairs storage for no rhyme or reason other than the fact I’m a born seamhead.

This past weekend, Francis Peter “Fran” Riordan renewed the recollection with three visits to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. He also restored faith that I’m not losing my mind.

Riordan, 39, ascended at last to affiliated baseball this spring, joining the Oakland A’s organization as manager of the Class-A Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. In 2005, he was a second-year manager of the Kalamazoo Kings of the independent Frontier League, his baseball home for 16 seasons as a player and manager.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM In the 1870s, fashionable chairs were made with padded upholstery, elaborate mahogany carved frames and springs to make the seats more comfortable. But George Jacob Hunzinger (1835-1898), a German immigrant craftsman, had other ideas. He used flat, metal, fabricwrapped wire instead of springs and upholstery to make comfortable chairs. The frames were just as original, often with “rod and ball” turnings that led to the modern name of “lollipop chairs.” He made many rockers with clever mechanical bases, and chairs that looked as if they were made of bolts and pipes. Some chairs could be folded, others just looked like folding chairs. A recently sold rarity is the adjustable daybed. It was made about 1876. It has the fabricwrapped wire webbing, spindles with ball finials and an adjustable back, and sold for $7,768. Hunzinger furniture is not as scarce as was thought before there were Internet listings, so prices have dropped a little since 2005. Most of the pieces are stamped with his name and a patent date. *** Q: When I came to the U.S. from the U.K. some 25 years ago, I brought my collection of Moorcroft pottery. Some of the pieces date back to the 1930s. As I have passed my “sell-by” date, I would like to sell some or all of them. Unfortunately, there seems to be little or no interest now in Moorcroft. Any ideas how I can get a little cash for some of the pieces?

A: This is a good time to sell old Moorcroft. Prices are going up. William Moorcroft worked as a designer at James Macintyre & Co. in England before forming his own company in 1913. Financing was provided by Liberty, the famous London department store.

The Moorcroft family bought out Liberty in 1962 and controlled the company until 1984, after which there were several changes in own-

ership. The company is still in business in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England. According to the company’s website, www.moorcroft. com, Moorcroft is selling more of its pottery today “than it did even in its previous heyday during the mid1920s.” Vintage Moorcroft vases sold this year for a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Contact some auctions in the U.S. that have been selling Moorcroft. There are also some auctions in Canada, England and Australia that sell vintage Moorcroft. There is an advantage to having international online buyers. ** * Q: I inherited a 1902 Sears hand-cranked washer from my parents. It’s made of wood with iron parts and weighs 93 pounds.

A: Lusterweibchen chandeliers have a carved wood figure of the upper half of a woman’s body mounted on deer or elk antlers. They were first made about 1425 and were popular in southern Germany during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The words “luster” and “weibchen” are German for “chandelier” and “female.” The woman often holds a candle or candle-shaped light in each of her outstretched hands.

Some figures depict mermaids or other mythical figures with the tail of a dragon. Chandeliers with male figures, called luestermaennchen, also were made but are not as common. Our amazing daughters are in their late 20s. Both of them are independent, intelligent and loving. The four of us have a special bond. My wife and I have always been supportive in all aspects of our daughters’ lives, and that will never change.

They have been dating great guys over the past five years whom we believe they will ultimately marry. The problem?

My wife and I were raised with certain values, and our daughters have recently moved in with their boyfriends. We do not approve, but respect their decisions as adults.

One daughter plans to have an open-house party celebrating their new place. She’s upset that my wife and I have indicated we won’t be attending, because doing so would be difficult and against our beliefs. We have understood her decision, but she does not appear to respect ours. Are we wrong to take this stance? –

She and her boyfriend have been a couple for five years now, and their relationship appears to be progressing nicely. It’s not unusual for couples today to live together.

I see nothing to be gained by skipping their open house – but I do see something to lose.

Dear Abby: My husband’s grandmother keeps purchasing season tickets to the theater for me. I have told my mother-in-law (who is in charge of buying the tickets) as politely as possible that summer is a very busy time for me. My kids, husband and I

are all involved in activities, and the theater conflicts with these activities.

As well, I don’t particularly enjoy the group of people that we go there with. (I haven’t shared this with my mother-in-law.)

While I like my mother-in-law and husband’s grandmother, the others are rude. They exclude me from conversations and hardly acknowledge my existence. I try to make conversation but unsuccessfully. It makes for a dreadfully awkward evening.

How do I get out of going to the theater without hurting anyone’s feelings? – No Thanks In Canada Dear No Thanks: The most effective way to accomplish that would be to stop beating around the bush and tell your husband’s mother and grandmother you would prefer not to be included, and the reason why.

Setting aside a little time for exercise is better than none at all Dear Doctor K: You often recommend exercising for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. That target intimidates me. Is it worth it for me to exercise less, say 15 minutes, three days a week? Or is there no benefit unless I commit to the full 150 minutes per week?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked that question, because there are a lot of people who are daunted by the thought of exercising that much – and therefore don’t do it at all. It is true that I do advise 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. But two recent studies, while not changing my view that 150 minutes is best, show that less than this still brings benefits.

First, let’s establish what we know: Regular exercise protects you against many major diseases. That includes heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression and even some cancers. In fact, there are no medicines yet invented that can protect you against these diseases as well as regular exercise.

But how much exercise? Two papers published recently have made me think carefully about whether my emphasis on the 150-minute-a-week goal is right for everyone.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff One research team analyzed studies of physical activity in over 800,000 people. The more time that people were sitting down each day, the greater their risk of heart disease and cancer. The people who spent the most time sitting down, compared to those who spent the least time, had a 24 percent higher risk of dying prematurely. And they had a 90 percent greater risk of getting diabetes.

Another research team in Denmark compared death rates in regular joggers, light joggers and non-joggers. Light joggers were those who jogged at a slow or moderate pace just two or three times a week, for 60 to 145 minutes. Not surprisingly, the light joggers had much lower death rates than the non-joggers. But surprisingly, the light joggers also had somewhat lower death rates than the regular joggers.

I’m not sure I believe that last result, given what so many other studies have said about the benefits of regular jogging. But I do absolutely believe that regular

light exercise brings more health benefits than being sedentary.

And the exercise doesn’t need to be jogging.

In other words, exercise is on a spectrum. On one end is no activity; on the other end is 150 minutes or more of exercise per week. In between there is a continuum.

You benefit from any level of activity on that continuum.

Here are some suggestions to get more activity into your day: • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

• Park farther away from your office, or get off the bus a stop or two earlier.

• Ask a friend to join you for a walk instead of meeting at the coffee shop.

• Walk around the house while chatting on the phone.

• Walk an extra lap around the mall.

• Walk the dog.

• Hop on your exercise bike or treadmill while watching TV. • Dance with your kids. That’s healthy – and fun.

Dr. Wallace: When I was in school, science was my weakest subject.

I was a good student, graduated with honors from high school and college, but I never felt comfortable with this subject. Now, my 13-year-old daughter seems to be following in Mom’s footsteps. She is a whiz in all of her other subjects except science.

I don’t know if I influenced her in some way by making her believe that science was going to be a difficult subject, or if the myth that most girls are incapable of doing well in science is really a fact. I tend to believe that females can compete with males in the field of science.

So what can I do to convince my daughter that she can be a whiz in science as well as the rest of her classes? I hope you can give me a few good tips to motivate her. – Mom, DeKalb Dear Mom: I enjoyed the science classes I took in high school and college, and my grades were good, but I was far from being a science whiz.

However, author and educator Linda Samuels definitely is.

In her book, “Girls Can Succeed in Science,” Linda discusses the obstacles she feels discourage girls from excelling in science.

These include stereotyping, poor preparation and low self-esteem. She says parents can play a big role in helping girls overcome these obstacles and offers these strategies to help them do so: • Get involved by taking an interest in your daughter’s science-related projects – moms especially! Show

• Maintain high expectations and a positive attitude about science.

Don’t ever say, “I could never do science either.”

• Engage in science-related activities such as trips to the local science museum, zoo or nature conservancy.

Bring along animal- and plant-identification books; discuss habitats and adaptation. Organize a scavenger hunt or explorer’s journal.

Above all, make it fun!

• Recognize assertiveness and individuality coming out through a daughter’s radical dress, loud behavior or body ornamentation. Help these young women channel this independence in more productive directions.

• Talk about women making news in science, whether it’s a local physician or someone nationally recognized.

Relate science to current ethical debates.

• Focus discussions on real-life health issues; exercise, stress, diet, steroids, contraception, sun-tanning and more.

• Make yourself available every day to talk.

Show a sincere interest in your child’s success.

• Support good study habits.

• Talk with your daughter’s science teachers to see what they’re doing to encourage girls to succeed in the classroom.

Remember, after partner opens one no-trump, responder should not show a five-card minor in a balanced hand unless strong enough to be considering a slam.

There are few deals in which five of a minor makes and three no-trump fails; there are far more where the converse is true.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade (trick one), two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. He hopes that clubs will run. But if declarer must lose a club trick to West, perhaps he will not know that South’s spade jack is now a singleton.

Declarer leads a low club to dummy’s ace and returns a club.

What should East discard?

East should pitch the spade three. This is a remaining-count card, the lowest from an odd number. Since East would never throw his last spade, this must be from three, the 7-6-3, meaning that East began with four spades. And if so, South started with a doubleton. West gets in with his club queen and cashes the spade ace to drop South’s jack. Three more spade winners later, the contract is down one.
