Parade-goers loyal to Batavia’s Loyalty Day Parade

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Ruth Archilla of Batavia pumped her arm to encourage the fire truck passenger to honk the horn.

He smiled and responded with a few loud honks – and Archilla smiled and clapped.

After a brief rain, Sunday’s 41st annual Loyalty Day Parade wound its way through Batavia as planned, featuring rescue vehicles, all branches of military service, scouts, the marching band from Batavia High School and local civic clubs, businesses, churches and charities.

“It has this small town, simple way of honoring the soldiers,” Archilla said, as she encouraged the next truck to up its noise game with a whoopwhoop. “It’s very special.”

The parade is sponsored by the Batavia VFW Post 1197.

Among then were the Batavia Shrine Club, the classy cars of the Fox Valley Corvette Club, Rover Rescue with about a dozen dogs, dancers from The Attic Christian Arts Center and State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva.

Bjorn and Phyllis Holstead of Batavia said they never miss the Loyalty Day Parade.

“And I usually have a grandchild in the parade, although not this year,” Holstead said.

Bjorn Holstead said he has additional reasons for coming to the parade.

“One of my wife’s sons, Lester Foltos, went to school with the mayor,” Bjorn Holstead said. “And, I’m a Vietnam vet.”

Bill Schrauth and his sister Ellen Stewart, both of Batavia, also said they always come to the event.

“I live in town and always come to support the city and its events,” Schrauth said.

“I love parades,” Stewart said.

Stephanie Martin of Batavia came with her family to watch the parade, to wave at the participants, stand for the veterans and military – and just generally enjoy the day.

Event draws awareness to premature births

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Minutes before hundreds set out to walk along the Fox River for the annual March for Babies, Jordon Schaver thanked them for their participation.

His family – wife, Kayla, and daughters Faith and Locklyn – served as the event’s Fox Valley ambassador family.

Faith, who celebrated her fourth birthday Wednesday, was born several weeks early and required time in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her younger sister also arrived early, though not as early as Faith, Schaver said.

“We’re just grateful for everything the March of Dimes has done,” he said. “It’s helped our family and many others, and we just thank everyone for coming out to help support.”

About 500 people were registered for the march, but walk-ups bumped the participation to about 600 to 700 people, said Greg Carrell, a division director with the March of Dimes.

He said the St. Charles event raised nearly $80,000, which not only surpassed last year’s total of about $54,000 but also exceeded the fundraising goal of $78,000.

“It’s local people making a local difference,” Carrell said.

Many participants donned T-shirts indicating they were walking for or in memory of

someone.

“It’s really nice to see everyone come together,” Yorkville resident Ashley Doyle said.

Doyle – who brought her 7½-year-old daughter, Taylor, and 18-month niece, Olivia – said it was her first year walking in the event. Her older sister died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at 7 weeks old, she said.

Event Chair Linda Deering of Advocate Sherman Hospital said she was motivated to get involved after reflecting about how her oldest brother could have benefited from the work March of Dimes does.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to have you here,” she told the crowd.

ST. CHARLES – An improperly placed outdoor patio heater is being blamed for starting a fire that caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to a St. Charles house Friday night.

No injuries were reported. St. Charles firefighters at 8:40 p.m. responded to a reported fire involving the exterior wall of the home at 104 Shoreline Court, according to a St. Charles Fire Department news release. Firefighters arrived at the home by 8:46 p.m. to find a fire on the exterior wall of the home that adjoins the backyard deck, on the roof and into

the concealed spaces in the soffit area. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes, but they remained on the scene until 10 p.m. to make sure the fire had not spread, the release stated.

A neighbor living near the home saw the fire and notified the homeowners, who called 911.

“The fire was contained quickly due to the quick action of the neighbor after seeing the problem,” the release stated.

The cause of the fire was attributed to an outdoor patio heater placed close to the wall and left on for an extended period, according to the release.

By JAMES NOKES editorial@kcchronicle.com There are more than 900 potential problems awaiting the maintenance staff every Spring at Mill Creek Golf Club.

As the growing season approaches, the rolling hills, fairways and greens at the picturesque Geneva golf course need water, which is a source of anxiety for general manager Ed Garland as he nervously awaits the recharging of the irrigation system.

Drained of water in November to prevent the underground pipes from freezing during winter, he called the irrigation system the “lifeblood of the golf course.” As it is brought back to life, it is filled only with water from the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District. There is no well water or water from a natural aquifer used at Mill Creek.

Rather, treated waste water from the 2,000-home commu-

nity surrounding the 200-acre Geneva golf course covers Mill Creek’s irrigation needs. The project is just a part of a commitment to the environment at Mill Creek and other area golf courses.

“Recharging the irrigation system every spring is a huge project,” Garland said. “We’ve got over 200 acres of turf and a lot of irrigation heads that we need to test have made it through winter. Sometimes we need to do maintenance on an irrigation head or a pipe. But what is great is that all the water is reclaimed from the community.”

While water management can turn into an issue during a dry summer at other courses, the perception of golf courses continues to change. Phillips Park Golf Course superintendent Todd Schmitz has seen an evolution occur over his 27 years in the business.

“I think word on the street is that golf courses are just huge polluters,” Schmitz said.

“Everyone thinks we over fertilize, spray a ton of pesticides and leave a huge negative car-

“Roughly 20 to 30 years ago there was a shift. We are Audubon certified and the mission is to not be a polluter. There is more education out there on how to keep a golf course healthy. Often times, chemical usage is impractical.

We prefer to use solid cultural practices because chemicals and fertilizers aren’t always the answer. Over time, we’ve really become stewards of the land.”

Being a superintendent is in Schmitz’s blood. The job runs in his family. His father and brother have both held the same position at different courses. When he discusses new aeration technology that allows increased oxygen and water exchange with minimal damage to the green, a part of the golf course he refers to as “the plant,” it’s done with the intent to limit chemical application.

nance techniques have also reduced chemical usage on a golf course. A more natural approach has allowed nature to make a vibrant return to open land. At Phillips Park, there are 17 bluebird houses and every spring there is a controlled burn of the native grass areas.

Invasive weeds are eliminated, and as dead plants from the previous season are burned, carbon is returned to the soil.

The golf course is its own ecosystem. As players fill its links in the spring, summer and fall, it’s the superintendent – who arrives well before sunrise with dirt under his fingernails from work done the day before – that ensures golf will be played and nature will be preserved.

“Some people sit behind a desk for their job,” Schmitz said. “Well, my office is the golf course. I take ownership of the property. This is my baby.”

St. Charles North girls soccer wins tourney title in Iowa KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – The St. Charles North girls soccer team edged Lee’s Summit West (Missouri) and Collinsville by separate 2-1 scores Saturday to win the top bracket of the annual Tournament of Champions.

Most of the North Stars saved their celebrating for the road, as North’s prom was scheduled for later in the day.

North improved to 13-2-1 while winning the event’s top bracket for the fourth time in seven tries.

“We just came together,” North Stars coach Ruth Vostal said. “I thought we created a lot of different offensive opportunities. Different players were stepping up for the assists and the goals, which was nice to see, and different people were stepping up on set pieces.

linsville, while Vostal called the play of goalkeeper Leanne Stahulak “outstanding” throughout the day.

Blueprint to be tested

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com There was a time when Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was thought to have the blueprint to control LeBron James.

During his days as an assistant with the Boston Celtics, Thibodeau’s defense gave James headaches. That was especially true in the 2010 playoffs, when the Celtics held James – then in his first stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers – in check for three of the six games in their series win.

The problem is, that was a long time ago and with completely different personnel.

James has evolved since.

He won two championship rings in his four seasons with the Miami Heat and went through Thibodeau-coached Bulls teams twice in the process.

So are there any pieces of that blueprint that still exist?

“Yeah, we slowed him down,” Thibodeau said sarcastically Sunday. “I think he had 45.”

Actually, James’ high game in that 2010 playoff series was 38 points, but he did have a 42-point game against the Celtics earlier that season.

Nonetheless, James always has paid tribute to Thibodeau’s defensive mind.

And it’s clear Thibodeau has the highest respect for James.

“He’s a great player,”

Thibodeau said on the eve of the Bulls’ opener against the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. “The only thing you can do with him is you can try to make him work for his points. You can’t really give him a steady diet of anything; you have to mix it up on him. He can beat you a lot of different ways.

It’s not only his scoring; it’s his passing.

“He’s seen every type of defense there is. We just have to be tied together, try to make him work, and you can’t neglect the rest of their team. That’s what makes him who he is.”

The task of guarding James will start with Jimmy Butler. He was drafted as a defensive stopper, and he will face no bigger challenge than what the Bulls will ask him to do for the next couple of weeks.

When Butler needs a rest, expect Tony Snell to get a few minutes on James. The hope is that Snell’s length will give James a different look and a new set of problems.

“It’s absolutely a very difficult cover for anyone, for any team,” power forward Pau Gasol said of slowing down James. “He attracts a lot of attention. Physically, he’s a guy that dominates the game, so we have to help the guy that is guarding him.

Make him take tough shots, hopefully force him into turnovers, reduce his easy points.

But it’s a team effort.”

It often is reported that Vince Lombardi instructed all of his players, upon arriving in the end zone, they should “act like they’d been there before.”

That exactly is what Bears general manager Ryan Pace did this weekend overseeing his first NFL college draft.

Asked what it was like in his own war room for the first time, Pace said, “It has been really smooth. It’s been really calm. It’s good to sit next to John [Fox] and bounce ideas off of him and talk things through.”

The results suggest Pace ran this draft like a crusty old vet. There were no rookie gaffes, blockbuster moves, missed deadlines or stunning picks. What became clear about Pace’s drafting philosophy is the value he places on character.

“It was something that was stressed. Me and John [Fox] always talk about smart, intelligent, tough players, and that was stressed. That wasn’t just happenstance, that was done purposefully.”

If I ask him if he loves me, he tells me I shouldn’t be insecure and needy. I told him hearing the words mean a lot to me, but the words seem to have been deleted from his vocabulary. To stop partner from going wrong, West should continue with the diamond five. East ruffs with the vital spade nine, which effects an uppercut and promotes a trump trick for West.

When you want partner to ruff, lead a loser, not a winner.
