Chronicle unveils redesign of newspaper Astute readers likely have noticed that the cover of today’s Kane County Chronicle has undergone a redesign.

In addition, some design tweaks have been made inside of the paper, including the use of more prominent section headers, as well as a revised page 3 – where the Face Time and Out and About features are located.

“The new look of the Kane County Chronicle is the result of a six month-long project to refresh Shaw Media’s print products to make them more uniform, but with each keeping its own identity,” wrote my coworker R. Scott Helmchen, managing editor for production and design for Shaw Media, in an email about the redesign project.

“We wanted the design of the Kane County Chronicle

to be modern and clean,” he wrote. “The front page was redesigned to declutter it, making it more readable while adding more teasers to inside content. We also added very visible links to Kane County Chronicle social media pages.

“The inside page headers were designed to anchor each page from the top, letting the reader easily identify that page’s content. The sections of the paper now have a clear visual link with one another.

In addition, a uniform color palette was adopted using shades of red and blue that are pleasing to the eye.”

••• Two more college students have started summer internships at the Kane County Chronicle.

Aurora resident Natalie Wickman attends Marquette University in Wisconsin and is planning to major in journalism, with a minor in women’s and gender studies.

And Bartlett resident Samantha Kummerer is a student at the University of Missouri, where she is planning to major in journalism and minor in business.

During her internship, Natalie – who wrote several stories as a freelance writer for the Chronicle last year –

eighth-graders, who will program competition-worthy robots for a series of missions.

Three programs will be offered, one from 12:30 to 6 p.m. June 21 through June 22; another from July 12 through July 13; and another from July 19 through July 20.

Registration is required.

Locations are to be determined.

Besides these programs, Fox Valley Robotics will offer a season program that will start at the end of August.

CAMPTON HILLS – When Campton Hills resident Dick Royce got an invitation a couple of months ago to appear on the “Steve Harvey” show, he hesitated.

“I said, ‘You know, I don’t know,’ ” he recalled. “[A show representative] convinced me to come on.”

Tuesday, Royce will be honored as “Harvey’s Hero” on the daytime talk show, which airs at 2 p.m. on NBCTV. Harvey is recognizing Royce – who is known as the Good Humor Man – for donating profits of his ice cream sales to charities. Royce said he raised about $7,000 for charities last year, and the talk show learned of his efforts through a Kane County Chronicle article.

In addition to being honored as a “Harvey’s Hero,” Good Humor donated 3,000 cases of ice cream – about $7,000 worth of ice cream bars – to Royce, according to the release.

“Steve Harvey” is produced at the WMAQ/NBC 5 studios in downtown Chicago. The show put Royce and his wife of about 40 years, Susan, up in a hotel for a night, he said.

Spittlebugs are a sign that summer soon will be here. Look for these tiny insects, encased in white blobs of bubbles, on the stems of common plants like goldenrod and clover.

2014 will be big year for spittlebugs We’ve all heard the saying, “Snug as a bug in a rug.” But this time of year I often find myself adding, “The bug is little and living in spittle.”

Not only is that little ditty proof that naturalists shouldn’t write adages, it’s also confirmation that it’s spittlebug season once again.

Adult spittlebugs are the sort of insects that you could walk right by and never even notice. Measuring scarcely a quarter-inch, they’re cryptically colored in shades of brown or green. Their tendency to sit very still most of the time, on plants that are brown or green, makes them darn near invisible to the casual observer.

But young spittlebugs, or nymphs, are a completely different story. Encased in a frothy mass (aka spittle), the immature insects are hard to miss. But while many people see them, most avert their eyes and stifle an “eeww” in the mistaken belief that the

The good news is that it’s not spit at all. Rather, the bubbly concoction is produced as a result of the insect’s intriguing feeding habits.

Whereas many herbivorous insects slurp on the phloem, or food-transport tissues, of a plant, spittlebug nymphs feed from the xylem, the tissue that transports water and minerals. The diluted nature of the xylem’s liquid means the young bugs must consume it in large quantities.

And large volumes going in mean, sooner or later, large volumes will be coming out.

In the spittlebugs’ case, that outflow occurs under pressure. As the expelled fluid, which contains sticky

glandular secretions, leaves the nymph’s body, it begins to bubble. To foster this process, the baby bug often will bob its abdomen up and down – kind of like the whisking motion cooks use when making meringue.

Like a miniature Rachael Ray whipping up tiny trifles, a spittlebug nymph can aerate its excretions as fast as 80 bubbles a minute. At that rate, it doesn’t take long to produce a gob of froth that, on the one hand, is a testament to the insect’s appetite and, on the other, is home sweet home.

That’s right. The nymphs live inside the bubbles. Which really, if you think about it, isn’t a bad arrangement. Fairly resilient, the foam protects the insect inside from rough weather and temperature extremes. Its humid interior helps protect the youngster from deadly desiccation. And its resemblance to spittle is just the thing to deter preda-

tors.

What the foam doesn’t deter is curious naturalists. If you come upon a spate of spittle – and you will if you head to a natural area, because 2014 appears to be a big year for spittlebugs – simply reach down and wipe off a blob with your finger. Peer into the bubbles and, before long, you’ll see a pair of red eyes peering back. They’ll be attached to a small, soft, greenish-yellow body: a spittlebug nymph, convinced its time is up. (Just to be sure it’s not, take care to tuck the little guy back safely in his bubbly bed.)

If you’re wondering what species of spittlebug you’ve uncovered, well, I wish you luck. In North America alone there are dozens of different kinds, and more than 3,000 different species worldwide.

Their colors and patterns vary widely, even within a species, and all of them are small bordering on teeny-tiny.

If you do however want to try and make a guess, play the odds and start with a species that’s extremely common: the meadow spittlebug.

Introduced from Europe, Philaenus spumarius can be found on more than 400 different plant species throughout our area.

Check out the second half, or species, part of the insect’s scientific name. Spumarius is derived from the Latin spuma, which means foam or froth and alludes to the bug’s bubbly abode. It’s a root word you may have encountered before, especially if you’re familiar with a certain sort of sparkling wine.

ST. CHARLES – A housing development proposed for the city of St. Charles is generating feedback from neighboring communities of the would-be site, including Campton Hills and Geneva.

The St. Charles Plan Commission is expected Tuesday to consider the Avanti Acquisition Company’s concept plan application, which seeks feedback on the potential to annex a 96-acre property into the city and subdivide it in about 285 single-family residential lots, according to city documents.

The development would be known as The Bluffs of St. Charles.

The subject property is at the southeast corner of Route 38 and Brundige Road in unincorporated Campton Township.

City documents indicate the land is designated with a future use of “rural residential” in the city’s 2013 comprehensive plan, but St. Charles has not discussed the site recently.

Kane County, the village of Campton Hills, the city of Geneva and Heritage Prairie Farm have submitted feedback to the city.

Heritage Prairie Farm – a working organic farm near the proposed site – said in a letter to St. Charles that its entire enterprise would be jeopardized if the proposed development moves forward.

Accu-Paving of Broadview bid $562,000, and Schroeder Asphalt of Huntley bid $606,000, records show.

ST. CHARLES – Fred A. Filas, 61, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014.

He was born Aug. 29, 1952, in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Florence (nee Zielinski) Filas.

Fred was a graduate of St. Charles High School and Northern Illinois University. He was a nature and wildlife enthusiast.

He is survived by his loving mother, Florence; his siblings, Joe Filas, Steve Filas, Marjorie (Mike) Stephens, Pat (Robert) Sherry, Christine (Rudy) Albrecht and Dorothy (Gary) Erlenmeyer; and many nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Filas; and a nephew, Bobby Sherry.

Big plans for shopping center Finding tenants to fill the mall can be a crucial step to its success

T. CHARLES – A diverse group of strong retailers will help The Quad St. Charles redevelopment distance itself from the Charlestowne Mall era – at least that’s what some area residents and business people believe.

Finding tenants to fill the nearly-vacant mall is a crucial step for The Krausz Companies Inc., the mall’s new owner. Krausz officials continue to actively look and speak with prospective tenants, Jay Krigsman, Krausz executive vice president, said in April.

From May 18 to 20, Krausz Companies attended the International Council of Shopping Centers RECon in Las Vegas. It is a global retail real estate convention, and networking there could lead to more tenants for the mall in St. Charles.

“All of the landlords of any substance and tenants show up at this convention,” Krigsman said. “You have the ability to get your property in front of many people at one time.”

The mall could benefit from having a destination business like the Apple Store, said Kim Malay, president of the Near-West Neighborhood Association in St. Charles.

Malay said with the right shops, the mall could draw customers from multiple areas.

She said shoppers in far west communities such as Sycamore end up choosing between the Tri-Cities and Rockford as their shopping destinations.

Fellow St. Charles resident Vanessa Bell-LaSota also envisions the economic impact that a relaunched mall could

have on the city.

“I really think that reviving that space will revive downtown [St. Charles], as well,” said Bell-LaSota, who is the executive director of the Concerned Coalition for Sensible Spending of St. Charles Inc. “It will be a slow

evolution, but I see promise there.”

Like the mall, Pheasant Run also is located along Route 64 on the far east side of St. Charles.

Malay could see the Geneva Commons and The Quad St. Charles being mutually beneficial to each other by having a broad range of stores that shoppers can visit when they are in the area.

The shopping centers are about 5.5 miles away from each other.

“I do think that unique shopping experience has to happen there to be successful,” Malay said of the mall.

“If they do that right, I think [customers] would come in all directions.”

Malay cited the example of residents asking for a Whole Foods store as a unique offering that’s not yet in Kane County. A Geneva chiroprac-

tor has gathered hundreds of signatures to see whether Whole Foods officials would open a store in the former Dominick’s space. A Whole Foods spokeswoman said there are no current plans to come to Kane County but encouraged residents to keep informing the company about their interest.

ANY CHANGE WILL DO Even the addition of a few more stores at the mall can have a positive impact on east-side businesses, said Chris Lambropoulos, a manager at North Avenue Charhouse, a restaurant located almost directly across the street from Von Maur, one of Charlestowne Mall’s anchor stores.

Lambropoulos said that part of his customer base comes from the Charlestowne 18 movie theater located at the mall.

More stores would mean more potential customers for the restaurant, he said.

The 2013 opening of the

Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont is an example of how a mall can increase foot traffic to other nearby businesses, Lambropoulos said.

Even though Lambropoulos sees more customers willing to spend money, he also said they have a wide variety of shopping destinations.

Krausz Companies officials have said they will have to work to overcome the negative goodwill of projects at the mall that never came to fruition, such as the 2011 announcement of an ice skating rink at the mall.

Bell-La Sota is one resident who remains confident in The Quad St. Charles. She has been following the Krausz Companies’ initial interest in the mall and has watched its plans unfold in multiple meetings at the St. Charles Municipal Building.

“People are just a little skeptical unless they see movement,” Bell-LaSota said.

“Once they see movement, public sentiment will develop favorably.”

The $20 million agreement allows Krausz Companies to make costly updates needed for the redevelopment. There are $12 million in extra construction costs to regrade, demolish and update the mall, according to the city’s executive summary of the agreement.

The developer also estimates the cost of bringing in and retaining tenants to be $10 million.

The amount of money that’s required to truly redevelop the mall property would not be justified by the rent that can be collected, especially once the mall first reopens, said Jay Krigsman, Krausz Companies executive vice president.

Some residents were pleased with the city’s willingness to work with the mall owners, said St. Charles Ward 2 Alderman Rita Payleitner. The mall is located within her ward.

“When I took office, the No. 1 question I would get was, ‘What is the city going to do to help the mall?’ ” Payleitner wrote in an email. “I’m delighted to have an answer [the tax-sharing agreement] that is so well received.”

The corridor that was formerly anchored by Sears is now mostly vacant at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles.

ST. CHARLES – The $20 million revenue sharing agreement with the Charlestowne Mall owners is one of the largest in recent memory for St. Charles, and an important one, as well, officials said.

The Krausz Companies Inc. and the city will have a 50-50 split of the future sales tax revenue when the mall relaunches in 2015 as The Quad St. Charles. The revenue sharing would start at the grand opening and last for 20 years, or until Krausz Companies receives $20 million in reimbursements, whichever comes first.

The St. Charles City Council on May 5 unanimously approved the revenue sharing agreement.

The sharing plan is only for sales tax revenue of the redeveloped mall, not the current mall revenue.

The city currently retains all of the sales tax revenue from the mall. Krausz Companies is not receiving any advance revenue from the city, said Rita Tungare, the city’s director of community and economic development.

Tungare said each incentive plan the city creates is tailored to each specific business development.

WHEATON – Runners, walkers and children are welcome to participate in the Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals, which marks its 33rd year June 7.

The event is hosted by the Cosley Foundation to raise funds for the development and renovation of exhibits at Cosley Zoo. In the past few years, the Cosley Zoo Foundation has used funds from events like Run for the Animals to expand the zoo.

Run for the Animals will kick off at 7:30 a.m. at Memorial Park, 208 W. Union Ave., Wheaton.

The first 2,500 runners receive a long-sleeve tech T-shirt. A post-race event includes music, award and refreshments. The fee for the 5K and 10K is $30 through June 2; $10 for the mile Zippity Zoo run (ages 6-12).

OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up to the state championship performances for area girls track and field athletes.

Track and field is known more for individual achievement than the team dynamic, but last weekend’s IHSA girls track and field state meet in Charleston reinforced that effective teamwork can lead to some of the sport’s most rewarding moments.

The St. Charles East girls track and field team won a pair of state championships on Saturday in the 4x400 relay and the 4x800 relay. Notre Dame recruit Jordan Shead was part of both relays, joined by twin sisters Allison Chmelik and Elizabeth Chmelik, as well as Casey McNichols, in the 4x400, and by Torree Scull, Anastatia Honea and Corrin Adams in the 4x800.

The relays’ excellence allowed St. Charles East to finish in third place as a team in the state’s largest class, one point behind nearby West Aurora, which took second.

Also on the team front, Aurora Christian – with a small but highly talented pack of athletes – took the Class 1A team state championship, while Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz set a state record (2:10.73) with her victorious run in the Class 2A 800-meter run.

We commend the championship performances these girls turned in and hope to see more accolades for the area’s boys state qualifiers this weekend in Charleston.

Thumbs down to scam artists seeking to cheat their way to financial gain.

The St. Charles Police Department warned last week of a utility scam targeting two establishments in which someone pretending to be with the city’s electrical utility attempted to convince the owner his bill was overdue by $800 and requested credit card payment.

While telephone scams attempting to bilk members of the public are nothing new, improving technology gives thieves more options as they attempt to make their schemes appear plausible.

Some of the better executed scams can be difficult to dismiss.

More than ever, we need to pick up the phone with a dose of skepticism when we do not recognize who is calling.

If someone is requesting money or financial information, hang up and consider calling your bank or the police to share your experience.

It also is worthwhile to discuss the dangers of telephone and email scams with family and friends, particularly those who might have a trusting streak that could be exploited.

Most of the time, these scams don’t work. But those who perpetrate them would not go through the effort if they did not believe a percentage of the public could be swindled.

Don’t prove them right.

When measles strikes THE WASHINGTON POST Even when there are significant gains against infectious diseases, there can be reversals.

In 2000, measles was considered all but eliminated in the United States. For a while, there were only about 60 cases a year, mostly brought in from overseas.

Now, the number of cases and outbreaks in the United States is rising again.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that there have already been more cases this year, 288, than in any full year this century.

Measles is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by a virus that affects young children with fever, runny nose, cough and a distinctive rash. Infrequently, it leads to more serious complications. There have been no deaths in the United States for a while, but in 2012 measles

caused an estimated 122,000 deaths worldwide. That’s far fewer than in the past, because of a global campaign to vaccinate more than a billion children in high-risk countries.

In the United States, a vigorous effort at immunization in recent years brought measles almost to a standstill. After an epidemic from 1989 to 1991 resulted in 55,000 cases and more than 100 deaths – largely because of lack of immunization among poor and uninsured children – a federal program approved in 1994, Vaccines for Children, resulted in much wider coverage. More than 90 percent of the children in the United States are immunized.

Sometimes a single traveler can ignite a wildfire of infections. In 2013, a 17-year-old who had not been vaccinated returned to an orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn from the United Kingdom, leading to an

outbreak that affected 58 people; most were in three extended families that had declined the measles vaccine. This year, an outbreak in Ohio has reached 68 cases, apparently sparked by Amish missionaries, unvaccinated, who had visited the Philippines.

The measles vaccine has been in use for half a century and is safe, inexpensive and effective.

Some parents suspicious of vaccines have decided against immunization; in other cases, people are simply ignorant of the risks of inaction. Not all 50 states have the toughest immunization laws and standards. Thus, in some vulnerable pockets of the United States, a single person can touch off an outbreak. A nation’s borders provide no ironclad defense against viruses and bacteria.

But measles can be stopped with comprehensive and proper immunization.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Reject proposed increases The Batavia School Board is acting like the state of Illinois – borrow, borrow and more borrowing. With the commitment to borrow $1 million dollars – oh, I’m sorry – “lease” or “rent” – for Chromebooks, the school board had better not come before the taxpayers and ask for more taxes for operating budgets. The school boards borrow money for long-term solutions, like ... air conditionings, not for throw-away items like classical materials. Batavia residents should reject any and all new proposed increases in our taxes, whether for capital improvements or operating expenses. The school board does not know how to allocate the limited funds they receive.

Where do you suggest they go?

In response to the person who said if children cannot speak English, they should not attend school – where do you suggest they go? I am a school bus driver for a predominately Spanish neighborhood, and some of the kindergartners I transport speak no English. By second grade, students are virtually fluent and continuing to expand their vocabulary. These beautiful children have hardworking parents who are doing all they can to provide a better life for their families, and the children need to learn English so they can assist their parents with communication. Children pick up new languages much quicker than adults. I admire their tenacity and intelligence, and know that being bilingual will enable them to do great things in the future. And, by the way, the primary language spoken in Ireland is English.

Oh my God. I can’t believe what I read in the Sound Off column this week – if you don’t know English, you should not attend school. How, might I ask, are they going to learn English, if not at school? Every single Hispanic family that I know, the immigrants speak

Spanish, but the children all speak English, usually without an accent. There are neighborhoods in Chicago where all you hear is Polish. I don’t hear anybody complaining about that.

Also, my Irish immigrant grandfather responded, saying: “The only good thing the English ever did for us was make us speak English, so that when we had to come to this country, we already knew the language. It gave us a leg up.”

So, lighten up. These people aren’t a threat. They’re mostly good, hardworking people.

Their kids will speak English, probably better than you and I. Thanks.

Teach English, not Spanish I’m responding to “What’s wrong with [that].” English should be the language taught in schools, not Spanish. If ... they want their students to learn Spanish, let them teach them at a home. They see nothing wrong with that, all right? How ’bout our real estate taxes going up all the time for the schools? My grandparents were not born in America.

They came from a different country. At that time they had to learn English.

There was no going to the library to learn English. There was no free schools for them.

In order for them to get a job, they had to speak English because they came to America. ...

Illinois General Assembly passes $35 billion budget

“In 2011, during a deadof-night, lame-duck session, Democrat legislative leaders shafted Illinois taxpayers and now lack the courage to face up to the consequences, relying instead on the fiscal gimmickry of one-time revenue sources that only compound the problem down the road. To make matters worse, they also increase spending,” Oberweis said.

“The fact is this is not a perfect budget; it’s incomplete, but it’s decisive,” state Sen. Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge, a Senate sponsor of the budget, said in a statement. “I think it’s very transparent. … We’ve acknowledged very clearly the challenges we face before us and the steps that we took today that were necessary to live within the means already provided by taxpayers to make sure we fund key priorities – in education, early childhood education, in MAP grants, but also maintaining level spending.”

The Illinois General Assembly passed an estimated $35 billion budget package Friday that would not require the income tax increase to become permanent.

However, the budget is an increase over last year’s spending, as well as an increase over a resolution passed by the House earlier in the year, estimating revenue of $34.49 billion.

To cover the increases in spending, the budget requires about $650 million in “inter-fund borrowing,” money taken from state funds to cover general spending.

Republican state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, who has an office in South Elgin, said the budget relies on revenue that does not exist.

“Every spring we watch the most important issue in the state, the budget, be held until the last minute,” said McConnaughay in a statement. “And every year we see a budget passed that is full of pet projects, new programs and fails to address the fundamental issues with Illinois’ economy.”

We live in a great town. We live in a nice neighborhood.

But about one in 20 houses celebrated Memorial Day with a flag or similar remembrance of those who served and died for our freedom and way of life. Older people get it and for those of you who choose not to acknowledge it, I just don’t understand, or you are centered some other place?

What is most concerning are what parents are teaching their children, and by not acknowledging our heritage or not displaying some type of remembrance, those children will be one more step removed from our history and what makes us who we are. Man accused of tax evasion, wire fraud KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles businessman and his bookkeeper are accused of cheating credit card companies of about $1.2 million and evading their personal federal income tax obligations of more than $1.5 million, federal law enforcement officials announced this week.

Viet Nguyen, 41, of St. Charles and Adelina Miguel, 37, of Joliet were scheduled this week to be arraigned on one count each of wire fraud and tax evasion, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

Nguyen reportedly owned and operated several companies, including Expedite Media Group, VB Management Holding Company and Pure Small Business.

As office manager and bookkeeper, Miguel reportedly managed payroll, handled credit card charges and issued tax forms to employees.

“According to the indictment, between 2008 and March 2012, Nguyen and Miguel allegedly swindled customers, credit card companies and banks by fraudulently charging customers’ credit and debit cards and bank accounts for services that were not provided,” the release states.

“Nguyen directed Miguel and other staff to make fraudulent charges to meet daily sales quotas that he set and he and Miguel knew could not be met without fraudulently charging for services that were not provided,” it adds.

Because Nguyen and Miguel are reported to have intentionally failed to keep records about which credit card charges were fraudulent, authorities are asking anyone who thinks they might be a victim to contact an Internal Revenue Service criminal investigation agent at 630-4935224.

The companies’ federal income tax obligations flowed through Nguyen’s personal income tax returns, according to the release. It states Nguyen and Miguel are accused of filing false returns for 2009 that underreported their incomes.

The pair also is accused of having the companies pay their personal expenses, including Nguyen’s payments for a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Hummer, Ferrari, Land Rover, two Audis, mortgage payments, skating lessons, dental bills, utilities and property taxes.

“Nguyen directed Miguel to enter payments for personal expenses as business expenses in the companies’ ledgers to avoid reporting the payments as personal income on their tax returns,” the release states.

Wire fraud carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine or an alternate fine of twice the loss or twice the gain, whichever is greater.

Tax evasion carries a maximum of five years and a $250,000 fine. Additionally, those convicted of tax offenses are responsible for any taxes and interest due, as well as civil penalties of up to 75 percent of the tax owed.

GENEVA – When Geneva School District 304 janitorial staff use up an old cleaner at schools and offices, they are replaced with green cleaners that are not toxic to the environment or to people, a district spokeswoman said.

The school board this week approved a new policy stating each school in the district will use “only environmentally-sensitive cleaning and maintenance products, to the extent established by and in accordance with the guidelines of the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council, for all inhouse and contracted cleaning services.”

“We have been practicing green cleaning since the law was enacted in 2009,” district spokeswoman Kelley Munch said. “We’re using up the remaining cleaning supplies [and moving to] products that are nonhazardous to the environment and to people and

“By implementing these sustainability practices, agencies will not only benefit [from] the quality of our air, land and water, they will also save Illinois taxpayers’ money by reducing utility bills, waste disposal fees and other operating costs,” according to the website.

Knights send flood of finalists into final day of Class 2A state meet

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@kcchronicle.com CHARLESTON – Three assistant public address announcers collaborated with lead voice Matt Piescinski to call Friday’s Class 2A and 3A boys track and field state preliminaries.

Each one followed the same protocol, meaning a certain team sporting white singlets and black and white-striped shorts at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium was known as “Maple Park Kaneland.”

“It’s kind of funny, because I mean, a lot of people when they see us go, ‘Where’s Kaneland at?’ And we always say, ‘It’s not a town,’ “ Knights senior sprinter Brandon Bishop said. “So it’s kind of nice to hear ‘Maple Park Kaneland.’ It gives us a good chuckle.”

Come this afternoon, the Knights hope the sound of “Kaneland” signifies a changing of the guard no matter whose pipes deliver the school name. After qualifying 16 of its 19 preliminary entries into today’s finals, Kaneland’s bid to unseat three-time defending 2A champion Cahokia is thriving.

“Today was bang, bang, bang. Wanted to make finals, and we did that. Couldn’t be any happier,” Knights senior sprinter/hurdler Dylan Nauert said. “Tomorrow is time to break out the big guns.”

That was just an expression, of course, especially during a peaceful late-morning scene near the foliage by the on-deck athletes’ tent.

Shortly after the Knights won their heat in the 4x200-meter relay – a feat shared by their three other finals-bound relays – Bishop and Ben Barnes congratulated and bantered with two Cahokia sprinters who excelled in their own prelim.

Cahokia, part of 13 finals, registered top Friday marks in seven events, including the 4x200. For Kaneland, only senior thrower Nate Dyer turned the trick with a shot put effort of 56 feet, 9 inches.

“We’re competitors on the track, but there’s no need to take that elsewhere,” Bishop said. “You know, someday, those people could be our future employers or co-workers, so I mean, there’s no reason to be mean to them.”

Burlington Central produced six finals qualifiers, with junior hurdles standout Lucas Ege pacing the group by winning his heats in the 110s

(14.54) and 300s (38.72). Ege also ran the lead leg for the qualifying 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Rockets senior Matt O’Connor is another multievent finalist who has experience.

BC’s 4x400 anchor leg advanced in the 800, too, as he tries to reclaim the ecstacy of two springs ago.

O’Connor, then a sophomore, joined three seniors on the Rockets’ championship 4x800 relay in 2012. He’s especially elated to be back in Charleston after missing a potential trip last season with a stress fracture in his right foot.

“I mean, people still remember the 4x8 and stuff. Not everyone, though, since I missed

last year,” O’Connor said.

“They’re like, ‘It’s your first year down, right?’ And I’m like, ‘No. Been here before.’ ” In 3A, a veteran group leads St. Charles North’s contingent of three finalists, all seniors.

Jack Feeney extended his job description from simply a sprinter by joining the finals-bound 4x800 relay this season. Although he missed the finals cut in the 400, Feeney, who now has competed at state in all four relays in his career, embraced the chance to

help teammates Steve Lewandowski, Chris Suda and Nathan Klair have the opportunity to run on one more muggy, sunsplashed day.

“That was one of my big driving factors of joining the 4x8,” Feeney said. “It was like, I’m going to make it for the 400 and these guys could very well make it if we put it together and have the right push. It’s definitely more fun having more people.”

Batavia and Marmion both have two finals entries, including respective high jumpers Mark Rudelich of the Bulldogs and the Cadets’ Tyler Maryanski.

For the record, Kucera edged Carter, 49.10 to 49.46, but the duo knows the clock and a friendly rivalry resets today.

“We always want to race each other and win,” Carter said, “but at the end of the day, it was just get somebody in finals.”

Aurora Central Catholic’s Javier Montelongo, one of the Chargers’ two finalists in 2A, will bid to give ACC state champions in the same event in successive weeks.

He’s part of the 800 field one week after Karina Liz of the girls team earned a state title in the race. One bonus:

Montelongo, a senior, could recuperate Friday without worrying about schoolwork or the structure of a normal weekday.

“It’s a little different,” said Montelongo, a Sugar Grove resident. “But I like it better, because there’s not as much stress going around.”

ACC graduated Thursday, and Kaneland’s ceremony is set for Sunday.

Several Knights hope to have medals dangling from their necks by the time they’re ready to toss their caps in the air.

“I graduate Sunday,” Nauert said. “[Today], I hope to end high school with a bang.”

Aurora U. names new baseball coach AURORA – The Aurora University Athletic Department announced Friday the hiring of Adam Stevens as the next head coach of the Spartan baseball program.

Stevens becomes the program’s 17th head coach, coming to AU after serving as the head coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa, for the past 11 seasons where he had a 253-193 overall record.

In 2012, he led Central to the program’s first outright Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 64 years. That same year he was named the D3baseball.com Central Region Coach of the Year.

He also received IIAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2012, coached the 2006 Academic All-American of the Year and had 12 All-Region players and two IIAC Players of the Year throughout his tenure.

Less impressively but more importantly, the Saints eked it out on the scoreboard.

East’s 1-0 victory against host Conant in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional championship match played much more lopsided than the score indicates as the Saints delivered a performance worthy of a sectional championship.

“There’s something special about this team, I really feel it,” East senior midfielder Amanda Hilton said. “We just work so well together.

Every single girl plays with each other, and we leave it all out there.”

East (17-4-2) advances to Tuesday’s Lake Park Supersectional against Huntley, which prevailed Friday in a penalty-kick shootout against Machesney Park Harlem.

Fortunately for East, in between, Hilton also hit the net. Left unattended for a few costly moments in the middle of the field, the Nebraska recruit let one rip from about 30 yards out and scored the match’s lone goal with 25:04 to play in the first half.

“I hit the crossbar earlier, so I knew I had the range tonight,” Hilton said. “So I took my chance. No one was on me, I hit one, and luckily it went in. It was an amazing feeling.”

Although second-seeded Conant (15-5-2) remained within striking distance

throughout, fourth-seeded East was every bit as dominant as when the Saints pounded the Cougars, 3-0, on May 2.

“I told their coach, that was an inspiring effort by you guys,” Conant coach Jason Franco said. “I’ve seen them play now three times, and I hadn’t seen that kind of effort Amanda Hilton a n d e n e r g y and relentless play out of them. It was kind of what I expected to see more out of them on Tuesday [against St. Charles North], and they brought that for the entire game, on a hot day like this and with all this on the line.

“I tried to tell my girls, I know they’re emotional, but be proud of the fact that you just ran into a buzz-saw kind of performance out of a team that could do some real damage, I think, in the tournament if they can play that way.”

Hilton enjoyed an especially sizzling match, uncorking her shot off the crossbar after acrobatically twisting out of traffic just a few minutes before scoring her goal.

Hilton scored, East flirted with scoring another as junior Sophie Jendrzeczyk was stopped from point-blank range in what might have been Anderson’s best save of the match.

The sectional championship is the Saints’ first since 2007, narrowly predating coach Paul Jennison taking over the program.

“I would have liked to put one or two more away, I must admit,” Jennison said.

“I thought we had the lion’s share of the possession. We didn’t really give up too many chances in the back. But you know, at this time of year, 1-nil, nobody’s greedy. We’ll take it.”

Jennison called starting defenders Shannon Rasmussen, Sonia Ost, Sara Buetow and Mallory Mollenhauer “rock stars” for helping keep goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan’s five saves relatively routine.

The Saints are starting to daydream in earnest about a potential trip to the state’s final four next weekend in Naperville.

“We haven’t [advanced this far] in so long that now we really, really want to do it, try hard to score and everything,” Buetow said. “We want to do it. We want to win state.”

St. Charles East senior Jasper Koenen had won 64 consecutive sets this spring entering Friday’s IHSA boys tennis state quarterfinal against Hinsdale Central’s Edward Grabill.

When two consecutive sets went the other direction, Koenen was left to grapple with a deeply disappointing defeat that left him one victory from returning to the state semifinals.

“This was my first match of the season where I was tested,” said Koenen, who fell to Grabill, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

“All of these [top] kids are playing each Jasper Koenen other week in and week out and I’ve been dominating in our area, and I think that kind of played a little disadvantage for me today, not being able to have that moment yet this season where the kid’s up a set and a break on me or something like that, and I think he kind of used that to his advantage today.”

Koenen said his serve wasn’t as effective as usual as he dealt with left knee soreness.

He also credited the agility of Grabill, who was able to send back many shots that typically would be winners.

“It was definitely a disappointment,” Koenen said. “After I shook hands, I sat in my chair, just really upset, knowing this was really my last chance [to win a state title].

But it doesn’t reflect what I’ve done these past four years, and I want to end strong [in consolation play on Saturday].”

Koenen, who finished fourth in the state as a junior, could land in fifth place this year if he wins all three of his matches today, beginning with a consolation quarterfinal against Downers Grove South’s Christian San An-

dres, to be played in Buffalo Grove.

Koenen won his first match of the day Friday after winning three Thursday, defeating Edwardsville’s Brandon Harris, 6-2, 6-3. It was Koenen’s 32nd straight victory this season, all in straight sets.

The Michigan State recruit said it was a thrill to play in front of a big group of supporters.

“Tennis, there aren’t many matches where you get tons of people like I had today to come watch me,” Koenen said. “I’m blessed with my friends and family who came, coaches, everyone was just very supportive. I’m very thankful for that.”

Koenen paid it forward later in the day, continuing his pattern of showing up at virtually every East sporting event he can by rooting on East’s girls soccer team in a sectional final at Conant.

In consolation play Friday, doubles teams from Batavia, St. Charles North and Geneva were eliminated.

North’s Grant Spellman and Aaron Amburgey won their first match Friday against Lockport’s Mike Hasler and Pat Piwoni, 6-2, 6-2, before having their tournament run ended by Naperville Central’s Wesley Lo and Daniel Delgrosso, 6-4, 6-1.

The North duo finished the season 35-7, with five of the losses coming against teams that will finish among the top 20 in the state.

Spellman, a senior, wraps up his career with 109 victories.

Batavia’s Ryan Sterling and Adam Maris finished their season with a 34-6 record, dropping a fourth-round consolation match to Downers Grove North’s Mantas Kisielius and Chandler Downs, 6-2, 6-4.

Geneva’s pairing of Ryan Doeckel and John Potts concluded their tournament run 3-2 after falling in their opening match Friday against Barrington’s Ishaan Jaglan and Scott Apmann, 6-4, 6-3.

Kaneland junior Ben Barnes advanced from Friday’s preliminaries to today’s Class 2A boys track and field state finals at Eastern Illinois.

He’ll compete in the long jump and as part of the Knights’ 4x200-meter relay as the team looks to challenge three-time defending champion Cahokia for a spot atop the podium.

Barnes, who also was in the triple jump prelims, discussed his conditioning as part of this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley.

He also addressed the team’s confidence and outlook for the finals. Here’s an edited transcript:

Busy day for you. What do you take away from it?

Didn’t do my best in triple,

but long, I just feel like I can go farther even though finals worked out. … I’ve just got to focus on 4x2 tomorrow and long jump.

You guys are so well-conditioned and used to multiple events, but what’s the key to maintaining everything?

Just staying focused for your next event. Don’t let anything get you down if you still have more events. Your team’s always there for you.

Pretty much just not sitting around on your butt all day and always be warmed up.

How did you get into jumping?

I don’t know. It was just in middle school, they just had anyone do anything.

And I thought I might as well try long jump, because I

Obviously, you guys are very confident and wanting to go after Cahokia, but how much have you talked about that as a team?

We talk about it a lot, that the … biggest thing for us to get up there is the support from everyone. Even if they’re alternates, just coming out and cheering us on, giving us that extra push just to go faster and getting focused and prepared. Going to bed early, like to jump and I don’t like eating right and just getting [running] long distance. So I our minds set on we could assumed that I’d try long jump do something amazing down and my speed helped a lot behere. cause I’m fast on the runway.

I was born and raised in Kaneland. It’s a great foundation, great to grow up in.

With as many teammates as you have down here, does that give this a home-away-fromhome setting?

Yeah, it’s good to see that we have a lot of people,

because no one likes being alone. … So it’s nice to see your teammates everywhere, running around just to support everyone. Whether it’s pole vault running from the other side to the finish line for our races, it’s just great to see our team all come together.

You played basketball and golf before track. Any overlap with skills there?

Basketball gets me ready to condition for track. … I just started [golf]. I’ve been playing a lot. … I was playing when I was younger, but not on a team or anything, just for fun. And then I’m not playing football anymore, so I might as well do something in the fall to keep me busy. It’s just a fun sport, it’s a good hobby to pick up.

Bulldogs eager to hit reset button Knights handcuff Chargers Today’s regional finals

Confirming the handful of milestones his Batavia baseball team achieved Wednesday, Bulldogs coach Matt Holm simplified the situation just as quickly. “ Y o u know what, Micah Coffey I only want to worry about this one,” Holm grinned. “It’s one in a row.”

Batavia enters today’s Class Laren Eustace 4A York Regional final against Willowbrook on a 21-game winning streak, and could eclipse the single-season program reJacob Piechota cord for victories by beating the Warriors.

Considering the way the top-seeded Bulldogs got here – a tense, 10-inning regional semifinal win against No. 15 Bartlett – Holm’s easy-does-it approach makes sense.

It also trickles down.

memory,” Batavia senior left fielder Reagan McReynolds said. “Got to move on to the next game, so hopefully we can compete the same way.”

Well, maybe not exactly the same. While the Bulldogs (30-3-1) grabbed an early lead against Bartlett on Micah Coffey’s two-run single in the first inning, stranding 13 runners nearly took a frustrating toll.

Coffey’s two-out, twostrike single in the bottom of the eighth tied the game at 4-all after the Hawks rallied for a pair of runs in the top half.

“It was just such a range of emotions I went through [Wednesday],” Bulldogs senior center fielder Laren Eustace said. “I’m on my seat, Micah’s hitting with two outs,

two strikes and I’m just like, ‘This could be the end of the season,’ And then he delivered in the clutch.”

Eustace wasn’t too shabby himself two innings later, reaching base on a groundrule double and scoring the winning run on a wild pitch to Jacob Piechota with two outs.

Along with the grit of the usual suspects – Coffey (Minnesota), Eustace (Indiana) and Piechota (Western Michigan) all are NCAA Division I recruits – Holm has lauded the emergence of such “unsung guys” as senior Matt Puttin, who seized an open competition at designated hitter down the stretch.

An aspiring journalist, Puttin is thrilled he and his teammates won’t have to rewrite last season’s finish.

The Bulldogs were the second sectional seed in 2013 but suffered a regional semifinal upset against sub-.500 Hoffman Estates.

Holm conceded “it’s that first playoff game that’s the pressure.” Now that the Bulldogs have cleared the hurdle, they’re eager to reset and keep moving.

“We’re not done. We’re far from done,” said Piechota, a pitcher/first baseman.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but one game at a time. We can’t look past anybody. Respect all, fear none.”

editorial@kcchronincle.com PLANO – The Kaneland baseball team wasted little time in jumping on Aurora Central Catholic during Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Plano Regional semifinal.

The Knights scored four times in the first inning without hitting the ball out of the infield and cruised to a 12-0 victory over ACC. Anthony Holubecki and Nick Henne combined to no-hit the Chargers.

“It feels great,” Holubecki said. “We really just had to be patient and didn’t have to work much there in the [bottom of the] first inning and we got paid anyway. That was a great feeling to start.”

A couple of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases withKnights in the first inning. Dan Hammermeister drove in the first run with a groundout. The Knights added two runs on an error by Aurora Central starting pitcher Anthony Bruss and then another on a double steal.

Kaneland wouldn’t need any more runs as Holubecki silenced the Chargers bats during his four innings of work.

“When you limit their chances, it takes care of a lot of things,” Knights coach Brian Aversa said. “Any time you have a pitcher striking out a bunch, the defense doesn’t have

The Knights broke the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring five times to take a 10-0 lead. Ty Carlson and Nick Stratman delivered run-scoring hits in the inning.

ACC (19-16) couldn’t do much against Holubecki and didn’t fare any better against Henne in the fifth.

“They outplayed us and they’re a good team,” Chargers coach Sean Bieterman said.

“Their kid is a heck of a pitcher and they seemed to really rally behind him.”

Despite the loss, the Chargers had plenty to be pleased with this spring.

“This group of seniors has won 46 games the last two years,” Bieterman said. “If you know anything about where this program has been before, that’s a huge accomplishment.”

The Knights (16-15) have a quick turnaround, as they’ll face St. Francis at 10 a.m. today for the regional title.

Row America is planning to invest $2 million into the St. Charles project according to Dickison, However, discussions remain in preliminary stages, said Holly Cabel, director of the board of commissioners for the park district.

Dickison believes St. Charles is a target area for the company to grow because

of the affluence in the area, the proximity of the Fox River and good “rowing [opportunities] in the Chicago area.”

“Our desire is to have winning teams in short order,” Dickison said. “We want to get teams the best coaches and the best equipment.”

The Saint Charles Rowing Club also prides itself on the quality of its instruction while maintaining a broader mission.

For Saint Charles Rowing Club second-year member Jack Sonin, rowing became a focus of his after sufering four major concussions, along with concerns regarding his long-term health. Sonin was “super skeptical,” at first, but came in and got in a boat and thought it was the “coolest thing ever.” Af-

ter starting his rowing career in the Learn to Row program through the park district, and meeting once a week, Sonin eventually was encouraged by his coach, Meldrum, to attend more practices and compete.

“The Saint Charles Rowing Club connects youth to the sport of rowing, and it increases the use of the Fox River,” Cabel said.

The Saint Charles Rowing club draws 26 members from all over the Fox Valley area as well as Sycamore and Naperville, and travels around the country for rowing competitions, also known as regattas.

In preparation for regattas, the club rows six days a week.

“Anybody who comes out should get in a boat and try it,” Sonin said.

ST. CHARLES – With news of a national rowing company potentially coming to the area, the Saint Charles Rowing Club is looking to distinguish itself in the community.

The St. Charles Park District and Row America are in talks to potentially bring a private company to the area and build a boathouse in Ferson Creek Park, where the Saint Charles Rowing Club currently launches its boats.

Row America is a national rowing company founded

by Howard Winklevoss, father of Cameron and Tyler, who rowed in the Beijing Olympics. The twins also sued Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerburg, claiming he stole

their idea for the website.

Row America and the Saint Charles Rowing Club had discussions in the spring to gauge interest in associating, but Dave Dickison, president of Row America Boat Club, a division of Row America, cited “different philosophies and interests” for the talks stalling.

“Our purposes are a little different,” said Saint Charles Rowing Club Juniors Director Chris Meldrum.

While Row America is a highly competitive organization, the Saint Charles Rowing Club considers itself a more inclusive, community-minded organization that also offers competitive opportunities.

“We take in everyone,” Meldrum said. “We embrace

Wasco Wildcats 9U baseball gets patriotic for Memorial Day

The Wasco 9U travel baseball team wore special red, white and blue camo jerseys to show support on Memorial Day. Manager Eddie Lowitzki used the jerseys to teach his team the meaning of Memorial Day and to help them remember those who have died serving our country. Several of the boys wore their jerseys to school May 23 to show their support and the team wore the jerseys en route to a 3rd-place finish in the Memorial Day Weekend tournament in Libertyville last weekend.

He then picked up a Heat win and a top-10 finish in the feature in Elko, Minnesota. Kunert is racing a 1934 Chevy Coupe Legend and is running for the National Points Race with Inex and U.S. Legends Cars.

I love seeing my children’s faces as they return home on the last day of school, all glowy and filled with relief and joy. I love that high-five moment.

What great teachers they had, this year. I am mindful, too, of all of the other interesting “teachers” who also touch their lives and teach them so much, though not always at school. To my kids’ coaches, extended family, neighbors and friends, you may not realize it, but just by being you, you offer examples of ways of being in the world from which my children get to learn and may even choose to model.

For example, Teresa Muir, Holly’s piano teacher (and mine), makes learning fun with diplomacy, patience, a keen appreciation for individual learning styles and a healthy dose of good humor. Though Holly hasn’t played in several weeks due to a broken finger, she says she really misses it. This “break” has been an interesting litmus-test of her commitment, as it turns out, one that would no doubt waver if Mrs. Muir wasn’t such a good egg.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose We encountered a few other teachers at Noah’s recent soccer tournament. The event appeared seamless and well organized, but from the grumpy parents in the parking lot to the grumpy coaches barking snarky comments on the sidelines (not on our own, thank goodness), to their grumpy young charges with their serious game faces and their own snarky exchanges on the field, to their grumpy, foul-mouthed parents on the sidelines (I know, right?), it was one big grump-fest. And not the first I’ve witnessed, unfortunately.

I recall, at one point, wondering why all of these people gather together so often to have this experience. Do they actually enjoy this stuff?

I couldn’t help but wonder at the irony of it all as I gazed across the well coiffed and endless green acres of soccer fields

toward the youth detention center looming behind them.

Imagine, for a moment, the joy that being allowed to participate in an event such as this might afford those kids and their parents? Noah’s teammate’s celebration of another teammate’s goal, when he took off his jersey and waved it triumphantly (for which he was awarded a yellow-card – but even the referee was smiling at that), was a desperately-needed breath of fresh air. Nice to see those smiles.

Our children are watching.

They’re forming impressions and deciding what to make of them, deciding how to be and how not to be. They’re deciding what fits – and what doesn’t.

They’re soaking it all in, struggles and all.

In fact, as for the stranger who passed out face-first in the icy street in front of our house during a bitter-cold and snowy evening a few months ago, I thank him, too. After our dog alerted us and we dialed 911, my teenagers couldn’t tear themselves away from the window, and nor did I urge them to. Though we couldn’t

hear the words exchanged, I was pleased to see that his civil rights were so obviously being respected by the Batavia police officers and others who responded.

A former psychiatric emergency screener who has witnessed such scenarios before, I could see that, in spite of the icy conditions and dusky hour, care was taken to patiently afford him the opportunity he deserved to try and stand on his own. While that wasn’t possible, then, I wish him well and am hopeful that whatever difficulties gave rise to that moment have eased.

My children learned so much from witnessing this part of his struggle, and from the numerous first responders who came to his aid.

Of course, I cannot forget to thank all of my children’s wonderful school teachers, too, including Holly’s sweet literature and language teacher, Cassandra Castro, and her fantastic and fun science teacher, Barbara Buckley. Oh, how we’ll both miss you!

As for Noah, thanks to his world history teacher, John

Dryden, not since second grade (OK, since he had Miss Buckley in seventh grade!) has this kid so looked forward to going to school.

Like most children, my kids absolutely blossom when they respect and feel respected by their teachers. Noah’s known some good ones, for sure, but Dryden’s passion for his subject has engaged him in a way I’ve not seen in years.

He may enjoy some of his other subjects and teachers, from time to time, but this semester, what I heard about from the moment he got into car after school until the dog finally pleaded for his walk, was Dryden’s class. I will miss that. I will miss my daily dose of Dryden’s worldview, and the swell in my heart I felt as I watched my son then energetically express his own.

The world’s brimming with good teachers. How lucky we are.

Peonies signal summer’s start For most people, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. For me, the season begins when the peonies bloom. The spring ephemerals have come and gone by now, and I am ready to trade the decidedly tattered and world-weary tulips and daffodils for the lilacs perfuming the air around every corner, the green grass and the peonies. Though their bloom period is short – just about two weeks – these are the days that really signal the end of a chilly, damp spring and the beginning of a season filled with lush blossoms and sunshine.

Peonies are often classified according to their varying flower types – single, Japanese, semi-double, fully double and bomb. Both the single and Japanese varieties have at least one row of large cupped petals encircling bright yellow stamens in the center. Semi-double flowers are a bit fluffier than the single or Japa-

But the fully double and bomb peonies are remarkable for the rows and rows of petals that completely cover over the centers of the flowers, with the bomb type notable for a flat ring of petals around the outside, and a compact “bomb” of petals forming a spherical mass on the inside.

In addition to the different bloom types, peonies exist in herbaceous, tree, and intersectional (a hybrid of herbaceous and tree) forms. Herbaceous peonies have soft stems and die back to the ground every fall, sending up new growth in spring,

‘Maleficent’ is magnificent

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now The first line of dialogue in this terrific horror-fantasy film from Disney is, “Let us tell an old story anew.”

It’s not the first time Disney has dug into its archive and remade one of its own.

There have been updated versions of “The Parent Trap,” “The Shaggy Dog,” and “The Absent-Minded Professor.” And Disney’s animated gems “101 Dalmatians” and “Alice in Wonderland” have crossed over into the realm of live-action movies.

The title character in “Maleficent” is the iconic villain who first appeared in the 1959 animated classic “Sleeping Beauty.” So here we’ve got “Sleeping Beauty” told anew, and in state-ofthe-art, visual effects-filled live action. It’s reminiscent of the story we knew as kids, but definitely goes in different directions. But it easily stands on its own as a fresh story for new generations who don’t know the original.

The film first introduces us to two kingdoms that couldn’t be any more different. One is populated by humans, the other by fairies. The two races do not have anything to do with one another. Until, that is, the ordinary young human Stefan wanders into the fairy kingdom, meets young Maleficent, who, with her big wings, curled horns, pointed ears, green eyes and bright red lips is anything but ordinary. They become friends, they grow a little older, there’s some puppy love ... but, as a narrator tells us, “It was not to be.”

Time really zips by in this film, and we soon find that the adult Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) has become her kingdom’s protector, but Stefan has gone back to his ordinary world and has become greedy as, we’re

In a sequence that might be too violent for the youngest of viewers, the human leader, old King Henry, leads his troops on an attack of the fairy kingdom.

But Maleficent, now a fierce warrior, swoops through the skies and calls up her own army of tree creatures to fight them off.

It’s an amazing, dizzying sequence. I won’t give away the exact results, but they lead to the nasty king, his tail tucked between his legs, later vowing that whoever kills the winged creature will someday be named king in his place.

When the adult Stefan (Sharlto Copley) hears of this, even though he and Maleficent have been apart

for some time, he returns to warn her. Well, no, he’s a human, after all, and according to all things fairy, is greedy.

He commits a treacherous act, then returns home, convincing the king that he killed her, when what he really did was break her, both physically and emotionally. She still has magical powers, but she’s a shell of her former self.

There’s some wrenching stuff going on here, but it’s buffered by the comic relief of a servant Maleficent takes on, a crow that she turns into a man named Diaval (Sam Riley) who she regularly turns back into a crow, as well as into a variety of other animals.

The story starts to

become familiar when Maleficent later learns of the birth of Aurora to King Stefan (yeah, he made the cut) and his queen. This news results in a revenge-fueled curse that Maleficent puts on the baby, involving a sleep of death from which she can only be awakened by “true love’s kiss.” Alas, in the mind of seemingly everyone in the story, there’s no such thing as true love.

The script by Linda Woolverton has a few plot holes in it, and sometimes breezes over situations that probably should have been more complicated, but that part of it is never really bothersome.

She gives some of the comic relief duties to three pixies who watch over young Aurora, and she makes it clear that the evil Stefan is going to pay dearly for his wrongdoing.

But as the story’s years keeping flying by, this is all counterbalanced with the sweet innocence emanating from the almost-16-yearold Aurora (Elle Fanning), who shows off one of the screen’s most winning smiles.

Though scary situations and images (along with absolutely gorgeous images and funny moments) continue, the film eventually turns into a study of the relationship that develops between Aurora and Maleficent.

Prehypertension can develop into full-blown hypertension Dear Doctor K: My doctor says I have prehypertension. If it’s “pre,” then I don’t need to worry about it, right?

Dear Reader: Prehypertension is a blood pressure reading of 120-139/80-89 mm Hg. That’s the gray zone between normal blood pressure (below 120/80) and hypertension, or high blood pressure (above 140/90). We know that hypertension is dangerous.

It increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and impaired vision.

Doctors first coined the term “prehypertension” because they found evidence that having prehypertension puts you at higher than average risk for developing hypertension later on. Having prehypertension meant, at a minimum, two things. First, it was even more important for you than for the average person to make the lifestyle changes that reduced your risk of getting hypertension. Second, it meant your blood pressure needed to be measured more frequently.

Now, new studies reveal that prehypertension also poses health risks of its own. It may independently increase your risk of having a stroke. For example, researchers analyzed 19 high-quality studies that focused on the links between prehypertension and stroke. The studies included more than 750,000 people who were fol-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff lowed for 36 years. The researchers broke down the participants into two groups: • Low-range prehypertension – Blood pressure between 120/80 and 129/84.

• High-range prehypertension – Blood pressure between 130/85 and 139/89.

People with high-range prehypertension had a 95 percent higher stroke risk compared with people with normal blood pressure. Those in the low range had a 44 percent higher stroke risk.

This study only adds to the evidence that we should take prehypertension seriously. How seriously? So far, doctors don’t recommend that people with prehypertension take medications. Blood pressure drugs lower blood pressure, but they can also cause harmful side effects. In the prehypertension range, benefits and risks seem to cancel each other out.

Instead, people with prehypertension should focus on lifestyle changes: low-salt diets, healthy weight and regular exercise. These can lower your blood pressure to the normal range without having

to take medications.

After the concept of “prehypertension” began to appear in the media, a patient of mine asked me a question. “Why do you doctors keep lowering the threshold of things I should worry about? Why do you keep dropping the level of blood pressure, or of cholesterol, that you call ‘high’? Are the drug companies pushing you to prescribe more drugs, so they make more money?”

Well, that’s an understandable concern. Of course the drug companies would like to sell more drugs. And, unfortunately, some doctor “thought leaders” are paid a lot of money by drug companies, and then talk to other doctors about the virtues of medications.

For the record, I don’t take any money from drug companies. And I have not seen scientific evidence showing a benefit from treating prehypertension with medications. But that could change as new research is published. In any event, I’ll recommend medications for something only when I think there’s solid scientific evidence that you will benefit – and that the benefit will exceed the risk.

Speed is cause of most teen crashes Dr. Wallace: Our drivers training class was discussing behind-the-wheel safety for teens. During the discussion we debated on the No. 1 reason teens are considered “at risk” drivers. We are not sure if drug and alcohol use by teen drivers should be the prime crime or if it’s poor driving habits. Is it possible that you have information to clear up this debate? – Lauren, Baltimore, Md. Dear Lauren: According to the United States governmental reports, speed is the leading cause of fatal teen automobile crashes, surpassing teen drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or refusal to wear seat belts. Nationally, speed caused more than one third of all fatal accidents involving teens last year.

Crash safety researcher Albert King at Wayne State University said that speed kills in three ways. First, it reduces the amount of time a driver has to react. Next, it expands the distance a vehicle needs to stop and finally it heightens the destructive energy of a crash.

Crash tests by the government for automobiles hitting solid posts and walls are done at 35 miles an hour. Doubling the speed to 70 miles per hour, the crash energy quadruples. That is why speed kills!

However, bridge still exists because of exceptional cases. Is this deal one of them?

South is in three no-trump.

West leads his fourth-highest heart. What should East do after declarer calls for dummy’s five?

After South opened one notrump, responder was right to raise to three no-trump. With a long minor, no singleton or void, enough points to think about game, but insufficient for a slam, go for the nine-trick game.

If East blindly follows the finesse-against-partner rule, he will put in his heart 10. However, South will win with his queen and run the diamond jack. East can win with his king, but declarer has 10 tricks: three spades, one heart, five diamonds and one club.

Now let’s go back to trick one.

If East tallies the high-card points, he will realize that his partner is destitute. And if he stops to survey his hand and the dummy, he will notice that his club suit is a source of three tricks. East must take the first trick with his heart ace and shift to the club king.

Whatever declarer does, he can no longer make the contract.

Whether you are declarer or a defender, take time at trick one to plan your campaign.
