A species that would make Dr. Seuss proud GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto I’m a fan of Dr. Seuss.

Always have been, always will be.

His magical rhymes helped get me hooked on reading almost 50 years ago, and the fantastic creatures he dreamed up made me curious about our animal friends in a way that’s still relevant today.

I love looking at Seussian creatures and trying to figure out from which species he borrowed its shapes and parts.

Sneetches, for instance, look to me like a cross between an ostrich and a duck, and tweetle beetles, from “Fox in Socks,” to my eye anyway, look immature – more like larvae than full-grown adults.

(Which may explain their juvenile behavior of battling “... with paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle.”)

At any rate, I thought of Dr. Seuss yet again the other day, when a most whimsical beast appeared quite literally out of nowhere. I was at Norris Woods in St. Charles, wrapping up a program and talking with my friend Kelly, when he/she/it dropped from the sky – or, more likely, a tree – and landed on Kelly’s shoe.

It was a caterpillar, for sure, but one unlike any we had seen before. It had teensy mouthparts made for munching, six legs up front and little prolegs behind, and moved in classic inchworm style – scrunch, straighten, scrunch, straighten …

But what really caught our eyes, and what I’m still talking about with my nature nerd friends (and anyone else who will listen), are the strange projections emanating from the tiny creature’s back. In Seussian terms, I’d describe them as “Wootable, scootable, infinitely inscrutable; Scriggly, wiggly, feeler-like thingies.”

The horned spanworm grows to a length of about three-quarters of an inch before pupating. Its adult form, known as the horned spanworm moth, has a wingspan of about an inch and variable markings that are either brown and web-like against a white background (female) or yellowish (male). though, the description reads more like this: Eversible tentacles extending from the dorsal surface of the abdominal segments. Normally slightly curled, these structures can be extended to more than twice their resting length when the caterpillar is disturbed.

Watching the creature scooch along Kelly’s finger (for it was way too interesting to leave down on her shoe), we emitted a collective “Wow!” and reached for our cellphones to snap some photos. When Kelly noticed the caterpillar was furling and unfurling the “thingies” on its back, we both let out a “Whee!” and switched our phones to video mode.

After several minutes of such excitement, we realized we were both kind of tired, and figured the caterpillar must be, too. Looking at the vegetation surrounding us and keeping in mind the rather stiff breeze that was blowing, we made an educated guess as to which tree the critter had fallen from and placed it gently on a leaf.

From that point on, it was a race to get home and try to identify the little Whozit. I briefly considered flipping through Dr. Seuss’s “If I Ran the Zoo,” but instead opted for my other favorite reference, BugGuide.net. Using

the search term “inchworm,” I soon was scrolling through hundreds of pictures of inchworms of virtually every color and configuration – including one with some odd projections emanating from its back. Two more clicks, and I’d come up with a tentative ID: Nematocampa resistaria, the horned spanworm.

Reading the BugGuide entry, as well as information from other websites, I learned the species has two other common names, the filament bearer and the bordered thorn. The caterpillar feeds on a wide variety of hardwood and softwood trees, including Douglas fir, hemlock, willow and hazelnut, as well as herbaceous plants in the strawberry and carrot families.

The various pages noted the function of the “filaments” is unknown, but at least one source noted they might be

meant to mimic dead flower parts or plant debris.

As I read through the various resources, I laughed more than once at the adjectives used to describe the caterpillar’s appearance. “Bizarre” was one, “peculiar” was another. One BugGuide naturalist simply noted, “Strange!”

To these remarks I’ll add my own, in verse inspired by one Theodor Geisel: With tentacles that spread, It can impress a small crowd.

LOCAL BRIEF Volunteers needed for Donut Days ST. CHARLES – Volunteers are needed for The Salvation Army Tri City Corp’s Donut Days.

Donut Days originated during World War I, when The Salvation Army workers brought doughnuts and coffee to soldiers in the trenches to bring them cheer and comfort and be a link to home and family.

Donut Days is now a fundraiser, and doughnuts are given to supporters.

The money raised is used locally at each corps for the programs that assist and comfort those families with food and other needs.

Volunteers are needed for shifts from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday and June 6.

Two-hour shifts are available at stores in St. Charles – Jewel (2073 Prairie St., St. Charles), Blue Goose (300 S. Second St.), Walgreens (2751 E. Main St.) and Wal-Mart (150 Smith Road).

Volunteers will collect donations in a box and give out doughnuts.

This allowed work to be on display from two to three days to two to three weeks at a time, said Elizabeth Bellaver, president of the council’s board of directors.

“We’d start making phone calls and stopping in places, ‘Can we borrow your space from this day to this day?’ ” said Bellaver, a St. Charles resident. “It was easier in the recession.”

Then the historic Clancy Law building, at 7 S. Second Ave. in St Charles, went up for sale in January, since Wendell Clancy is retiring from the law

practice. The 5,500-square-foot brick building was built in 1900 and served as a vaudeville venue in the 1920s. Its listing price is $499,000.

“The Clancy building got us off the dime,” Bellaver said. “In our founding documents, we are going to have an arts center. To be a city with a strong arts presence is something we wanted to do since day one.

And the Clancy building being for sale tripped the trigger.”

Bellaver said the arts council, now in its fifth year, has been setting money aside to buy a building to be used as an arts and education center.

Members held an open house earlier this month to introduce the Clancy building as a possibility for such a center.

The immediate goal is to raise $100,000 to get in the door, and then have a lease agreement to try to stay there while raising money to buy the build-

The organization has about $20,000 from what has already been set aside and from donations made at the open house.

But the issue is all speculative at this point.

“If somebody walks in tomorrow, and says, ‘I’ll buy this building,’ Mr. Clancy will give us a call,” Bellaver said. “We don’t have half a million accumulated.”

Bellaver said the group wants an arts and education center in the downtown.

“We have been talking to Mr. Clancy, and he was gracious enough to let us have a

wonderful open house. … [But] we can’t really do anything until we have some money,” Bellaver said. “If it takes more than six to nine months to raise $100,000, I’d be surprised if the building sat empty that long.”

Local artist Catie Barron, 50, of St. Charles, said she would love for the arts council to be successful in locating a center in St. Charles’ downtown, as an arts and education center is as important as the St. Charles History Museum or the municipal buildings.

“It would be the cornerstone for the arts for everything in St. Charles,” Barron said. “People would come here and have that building open and available.

They will have a connection to every possible arts-based business.”

Barron said she left a career in banking to go back to school for a degree in art six years ago.

An arts center as a place for the city’s culture to be highlighted would bring tremendous economic benefits to St. Charles, Barron said, as people would be drawn by the arts. For example, Cedarburg, Wisconsin, with a population of 11,500, has a cultural arts center. Barron said the cultural arts center has a full calendar of art classes and events that is a regional draw, Barron said.

“This is what a cultural

center in a small town will do,” Barron said. “They have poetry slams during an open mic night at its Blueburg Café that pulls in 300 to 400 people. It would be great to have that sort of place.”

The Clancy Law building was in flux Friday, as everything was being moved out, said Clancy, a Wayne resident.

Although he is retiring from the practice, Clancy said he still will be doing law work, such as mediation and arbitration.

“I think it would be a good thing for the city to have that downtown venue,” Clancy said. “It would certainly make a good use of the building. It’s a positive thing for them.”

And even if the group cannot afford to buy his building, Clancy said the effort would raise awareness in the community of their goals.

Bellaver said donations can be made directly through the council’s website, www. stcharlesartscouncil.org, but also in response to a mailing the arts council will be sending out soon.

“We will do the best we can to ramp it up and get it before the end of the year,” Bellaver said of the Clancy building. “If we get aced out, we get aced out, and we’ll find some other place. We’re dancing as fast as we can.”

Former Republican House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert was paying a man identified as Individual A, so he would keep silent about an incident that happened years ago, the New York Times is reporting.

The Times cited sources that said the man had been touched by Hastert when Hastert was a high school teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville.

Hastert was charged Thursday with structuring cash withdrawals of $952,000 to evade currency reporting laws and lying to the FBI about it. The money was used to pay Individual A to keep quiet about the past “misconduct,” according to the indictment.

Hastert was the U.S. representative of Illinois’ 14th District for 20 years and House speaker from 1999 to 2007. The majority party in the House chooses the speaker, who also is third in line to be president after the vice president.

Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt, who also is treasurer of the Kane County Republican Central Committee, said he was “shocked and disappointed.”

“And if there is any element of truth, it is disturbing on so many levels,” Hunt said.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen declined to comment.

“I think it’s well known in political circles that Dennis Hastert and I have not seen eye-to-eye for many years, so it is not appropriate for me to comment now,” Lauzen said.

“We will let the process go from there.”

U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin is assigned to the Hastert case, said Kim Nerheim, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Durkin is the brother of House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Westchester. A message left at Jim Durkin’s Springfield office was not returned.

Nerheim said no date has been set for Hastert’s arraignment.

Batavia School District 101 proposing balanced budget Plan assumes stable state funding

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 is projecting a balanced budget for the coming year if state funding remains stable.

“We have no reliable information from the state,” Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn told

school board members Tuesday. “It’s all propositions at this time.”

Monn gave a presentation of the 2015-16 preliminary budget, which shows revenues of $87.7 million and expenses of $87.6 million. In the proposed budget, property tax revenues are expected to grow from $72 million to $72.7 million.

Key revenue assumptions include a property tax collection rate of 99.5 percent, new construction for 2015 of $5 million and stable state funding. Although district officials are projecting that general state aid will go down slightly from $3 million to $2.7 million, they are assuming the current state aid proration rate will stay the same at 89 percent.

Monn said the school district could lose between

$500,000 and $1.8 million if there is a change in the current proration model. In addition, he said a pension cost shift could cost the district an additional $150,000 to $300,000.

In addition, Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed a property tax freeze, which Monn said would reduce the district’s revenues by more than $1 million.

Key expenditure assumptions include $1.5 million in

capital projects, and department and building budgets being reduced by 4 percent to 10 percent, pending summer adjustments.

Monn told school board members he will be refining the budget assumptions in June and July as more state funding information becomes available. A public hearing on the budget is planned for September, and the budget must be adopted by the end of September, Monn said.

Three tests are available providing a variety of information. Samples can be taken during warmer months when soil temperatures are at least 55 degrees. If the soil is too wet to spade, rototill or hoe, it is generally too wet to take a sample.

Extremely dry soil should not be sampled either.

For one soil test, collect five soil samples by cutting a one inch hole about 6 inches deep (3 inches deep for existing lawn).

First mosquito carrying West Nile virus confirmed in Illinois editorial@kcchronicle.com The Illinois Department of Health confirmed Friday a mosquito tested positive for West Nile virus in Illinois.

The St. Clair County Health Department employees collected the first positive mosquito batch of the year on Tuesday in O’Fallon, near St. Louis, according to a news re-

lease.

“West Nile virus activity is largely dependent on the weather and with the increased temperatures we’ve been seeing in Southern Illinois, mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus are becoming active,” Illinois Department of Health director Nirav D. Shah stated in the release. “We want to remind people not to be complacent.

Take precautions to protect yourself by wearing insect repellent and getting rid of standing water around your home.”

According to the Illinois Department of Health, West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has contracted the virus by feeding on an infected bird, the release states.

Common symptoms of the

virus include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches, which may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms, the release states. In rare cases, severe illnesses or even death, can occur.

District 101 examining high school’s lunch options Board considering removing school from federal program

As designed, the program provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The district’s food service provider, Quest Food Service, presented an analysis to school board members Tuesday on removing the high school from the program.

Board members at the meeting voted to renew Quest Food Service’s contract in the amount of a 3 percent increase of fixed meal rates. They are set to discuss the issue of the school lunch program at their June 23 meeting.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big Charlotte Berg retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move.

So, I called up Oak Crest with some pretty specific requests. I wanted an apartment on third floor, looking north, near my cousin. Feeling pretty confident that my requests would not be easily filled, I sat back and relaxed. Imagine my surprise when mere weeks later I received a call telling me that my every wish was granted. I moved in and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy my apartment; I love my neighbors and I can participate in any number of events and activities throughout the day. As my Oak Crest neighbors and I say, “Be careful what you wish for at Oak Crest, because they just might come true.”

Starting the week of June 8, the interconnect improvements on Stearns Road will begin.

Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day for about six weeks, weather permitting.

The work will be done on Stearns Road, from Randall Road to Route 25.

The project will include the placement of 4 inches of conduit along Stearns Road from Randall Road to Route 25, and installing electrical service boxes along the shoulder of Stearns Road from Randall Road to Route 25.

Stearns Road will remain open during the work while temporary daily lane closures Monday through Saturday will be required to accomplish this project.

Coroner continues to show dignity for cremains Kane County’s coroner last week helped provide an appropriate resting place for the cremated remains of nine people.

The cremated remains, known as cremains, had been unclaimed, and Rob Russell’s office could not locate the next of kin. So, Russell last week joined the Rev. Jeff Frazier of First Baptist Church in Geneva for a ceremony that took place at North Cemetery in St. Charles.

It was the second consecutive year Russell helped arrange such a ceremony.

Russell last year provided a proper burial for the cremains of 41 people. At the time, he

said he found unclaimed cremains left on a shelf in his office. We applauded Russell for his efforts then, and we are pleased that it was not a onetime event.

Providing dignity for the deceased was one of Russell’s goals. He also hoped the publicity would result in the claiming of some of the cremains, and some of the original cremains located in his office have been claimed.

Russell said he wanted to expand the program and partner with more township cemeteries in the county to offset the cost of indigent burials.

We hope he is successful and that he continues his efforts.

Avoiding the ‘summer slide’ Whether it’s about reading “to the rhythm” or heroes and their stories, local libraries are doing their part to encourage kids to keep reading throughout the summer.

Each year, libraries put together summer reading programs that typically feature festive kickoff programs and calendars filled with special themed events, such as music performances and contests.

Libraries often offer incentives for reading a certain number of books, so participants might be able to score coupons for free ice cream or

a free round of mini golf.

Most libraries in the area have adopted the music-themed “Read to the Rhythm” program. The Sugar Grove Public Library has selected the hero-themed “Every Hero Has a Story” program.

It’s all part of an effort to avoid something the St. Charles Public Library refers to as the “summer slide” – the idea that children could lose months of learning by neglecting to read during the summer. That is a good reason for such a campaign, and we are on board with the effort.

Ugly side of the beautiful game THE WASHINGTON POST Soccer is a global cultural obsession, and its quadrennial showcase, the World Cup, is one of the biggest entertainment spectacles on the planet.

Hungry for prestige, revenue, tourism and construction projects, nations large and small, free and unfree, compete to host the World Cup and related tournaments, which coincidentally yield billions of dollars for the International Federation of Association Football, more commonly known by the French acronym, FIFA, and its component bodies.

In short, FIFA’s decisions affect large quantities of the world’s scarce resources – including, sometimes, the resources of countries with priorities even more pressing than sports. A business that big, and that consequential, must operate transparently and accountably. Yet FIFA’s recent decision to bury a report by its own ethics investigator, Michael Garcia, and

Garcia’s subsequent resignation in protest, typifies this ostensible Swiss nonprofit’s efforts to police itself.

So, it is entirely proper, and laudable, that Attorney General Loretta Lynch has issued an indictment officially alleging what had long been rumored: FIFA is a cesspool of corruption and bribery.

The indictment charged 14 people with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy in connection with various schemes to, as Lynch put it, “decide who would televise games, where the games would be held, and who would run the organization overseeing organized soccer worldwide.”

The U.S. investigation is still in its early phases, which is good, because there are much bigger issues to be resolved.

Soccer fans have long been mystified at FIFA’s choice of Vladimir Putin’s increasingly aggressive and repressive Russia over several Western European candidates to host

the World Cup in 2018, and rich but tiny and climatically unsuitable Qatar over the United States, Australia and a joint Japanese-Korean bid for 2022. Many presumed that bribery of FIFA executives explained these bizarre picks, a presumption not weakened by the indictment – nor by the fact that Switzerland opened a criminal investigation of the 2018 and 2022 Cup bids on the same day Swiss agents helped U.S. prosecutors by arresting several indicted FIFA officials in Zurich.

Yes, soccer is just a game, but corrupt or dictatorial rulers love to bask in its reflected glory. That’s why it would be misguided even without bribery to celebrate the World Cup in Putin’s Russia or in Qatar, where oppressed Asian guest workers labor to build stadiums for the tournament. Now would be a good time for FIFA to nullify its award to those two countries and reopen the bidding under independent supervision.

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Burlington Central senior Lucas Ege’s quest at defending his state championship is still alive.

Ege, who won the IHSA Class 2A 300-meter high hurdles last season, qualified for the finals again Friday at the 2A state preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.

Ege has the No. 2 seeded time heading into today’s final with a mark of 38.98 seconds – behind Korrion Session of Cahokia (38.41). The Burlington Central senior is also the No. 2 seed in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40, also behind Session at 14.21.

onship in the 300 hurdles in 2014 with a time of 37.34.

He is also part of the 4x400 relay team for the Rockets that will compete today after finishing with a time of 3:23.78.

Batavia sophomore Jay Hunt is headed to the 3A finals after being one of 11 jumpers to clear the 6-foot-4 mark in the high jump. Teammate Matt Fabian is one of 12 athletes to make the cut in the pole vault with a mark of 14-3.

The Bulldogs came into the 3A meet on a highly successful stretch. They won the team

title in the Kane County, Upstate Eighth Conference River Division and West Aurora Sectional meets.

“On the track, I know the times were a little slow,” Piron said. “We hit some wind at a tough time. It’s tough on the kids because you come down here with high hopes and I think the thing to remember is you had a very successful season and this is just another meet.”

For Kaneland, Ben Barnes has a chance to defend his 2A long jump state championship, advancing to the finals with a mark of 21 feet, 8.5 inches, and he also qualified in the triple jump with a mark of 45-9.75. Danny Walker also qualified in the pole vault (136) and Austin Kintz made the cut in the 1,600 (4:26.05).

St. Charles North ready for Conant

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com The St. Charles North girls soccer team is riding high after its 4-0 win Wednesday over Wheaton North in the Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal.

Even though the veteran team needs no motivation at this point in the season, the North Stars have a little extra this time around. With the school’s only girls soccer coach, Ruth Vostal retiring at season’s end, each win for the North Stars continues her 15-year career.

Senior goalkeeper Shelby Stitz has been a four-year varsity soccer player and, along with the entire team, wants to make sure Vostal’s last season is a memorable one.

“She has had a big effect on me as a player and a person,” Stitz said. “We are definitely trying to do everything we can to make this season go as long as possible.”

The next challenge for the North Stars (20-2-2) is Conant, who stole a bit of the potential thunder from this matchup after beating St. Charles East, 1-0, in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

The Cougars’ (15-6-1) solid defensive play and forward Emily Mazurek has been the key to their sectional title game run.

The sophomore forward had a first-half hat trick against Batavia in the regional championship, and scored the game’s lone goal in Conant’s upset of East.

“They are always well coached and always have a group of talented players,” Vostal said of Conant. “We know they have a good forward (Mazurek), who has been scoring some goals for them. We are expecting it to be a very good matchup and test for us.”

Although Vostal will no longer coach the program when the season comes to an end, the North Stars will not allow that to be something that crosses their

minds when on the field. They have been a team focused on each game, without looking ahead to anything, or letting anything distract from what they are trying to accomplish.

This was evident after North beat Geneva, 3-1, in the Geneva Regional championship May 23.

With a potential rematch with St. Charles East still possible at that point, freshman Gia Wahlberg shared her thoughts about playing their rival on a big stage.

“I didn’t even know East would be next,” Wahlberg said with a laugh. “We are focused on our next opponent because it’s one loss and we’re out, so our next game is always the one we’re thinking about.”

The freshman forward was clearly focused against Wheaton North, scoring her team-leading 16th and 17th goals of the season to lead the North Stars into its sectional championship battle with Conant.

Wahlberg expects a strong ef-

fort from any team at this point in the season, but said the group’s main focus is to take the field and control what it can.

“We know if we play our game, we like our chances,” Wahlberg said. “We can’t worry too much about what the other team is going to do. We are focusing on ourselves more. If we go out and execute, we will be just fine.”

Regardless of who it plays at this point in the season, North will always be confident a victory is coming. The North Stars have not lost in their past 15 matches (14-0-1), with the only game they didn’t win coming in a 1-1 draw with East to split the Upstate Eight Conference River Division crown.

The North Stars are looking for their third sectional title in the past four seasons, with the most recent coming in 2013, a season that resulted in a trip to the state tournament and third-place finish.

The Geneva boys volleyball team didn’t have too much time to celebrate its regional championship win over St. Charles North.

The Vikings were right back in business Friday, defeating Guilford, 25-19, 25-14, in the Harlem Sectional semifinal to advance to face Lake Park in Tuesday’s sectional championship.

“To win our first ever regional, on our home floor against a rival was pretty special,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “But the volleyball postseason is so condensed that we didn’t have much time off. It took us a few points to kind of get into the game, but once we got focused, we were able to set up our offense.”

Seniors Luke Will and Nick Buseski led the team with 12 kills combined and junior setter David Franz had 20 assists.

Buseski said he wanted to make sure the team came out and knew the goal wasn’t to just win a regional and more games were to be played.

“We were able to spread the ball around well, which was a big offensive advantage for us,” Buseski said. “Once the game got going, we combined the offense with strong defense and when both are going well, you are usually going to be tough to beat.”

Ethan Roesch contributed 11 digs for the Vikings (21-16).

Tuesday’s match with Lake Park will take place at 6 p.m. at Harlem High School in

Machesney Park.

Kaneland knocks off Lemont to win regional

By JOHN BUTKUS editorial@kcchronicle.com LEMONT – Rainy weather in Lemont caused Friday’s start to be delayed, but that did not keep the Kaneland softball team from winning the Class 3A Lemont Regional championship against Lemont, 3-0.

The fifth-seeded Knights (21-8) faced a tough test against Lemont in the championship game, but starting pitcher Angie Morrow pitched a complete-game, six-inning shutout and allowed only five Indian batters to reach base.

“Knowing that Lemont is such a good offensive team, it was nice knowing I had my defense behind me making plays,” Morrow, a Wisconsin recruit, said. “With my team behind me, it allowed me to remain calm in the circle today.”

The Knights offense provided the run support Morrow needed early in the game.

After Lemont pitcher Jade Mardjetko struck out the first two batters, Kaneland went to work. Kaneland catcher Paige Kuefler hit a double, and third baseman Meg Cohrs reached on an error that allowed Kuefler to score Kaneland’s first run.

Then shortstop Morgan Weber went deep for a two-run home run.

“I’ve been struggling the last couple weeks and I just went up to the plate relaxed,” Weber said. “I didn’t know I hit it out at first but the pitch was right where I wanted it.”

Weber went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and one run. Cohrs went 1 for 3.

Although the Knights’ offense was clicking, Kaneland’s defense helped it get past fourth-seeded Lemont.

Morrow cruised through seven innings and retired the Indians order in consecutive at-bats in multiple innings.

She only walked and struck out six.

“There were multiple balls that were hit that our players ran down today,” Kaneland coach Peter Goff said. “If those balls get down they put those batters in scoring position.

Also our bench did an incredible job. They were up the entire game cheering and supporting and that’s what we have talked about doing from day one.”

The kids and coaches know the rules of the game (for the most part) and understand good sportsmanship. The umpires are working to ensure the game adheres to the rules while protecting the integrity of the game.

In Daddyball, many coaches don’t know the rules, haven’t been properly trained and don’t show good sportsmanship. You can buy plenty of bats, gloves, baseballs, etc. at Dick’s Sporting Goods, but you can’t buy sportsmanship. And if the coaches don’t know good sportsmanship, who is teaching the kids?

Many of these same coaches have a total lack of respect for the umpire, especially if the umpire is younger than they are. Furthermore, most coaches don’t face any repercussions if they misbehave. If a high school coach does anything remotely questionable, he’s got an athletic director and superintendent to answer to later.

Coaches and parents have made complaints to tournament directors, league officials and assigners and umpires have been fined, suspended and removed from future games.

You can’t Google the name of the coach who I tossed from a game Sunday, however. He was the one who ran toward home from the first base coaching box and started doing jumping jacks in front of me. Apparently he thought he’d get my attention by jumping up and down right in front of me. He certainly did.

He hollered that he was shocked that I could see him since I didn’t see the previous play at first base.

He won’t be punished, however. In fact, he’s probably

proud of his antics.

I suppose the good thing is that I rarely run into any problems with the travel programs in the Tri-Cities area. I wish I could say the same about all communities.

On Saturday, a coach begged me to call a runner out. “Their runner did not go back and touch first base on that (uncaught) foul ball. You have to go back and touch the base after every foul ball,” he barked. Uh, no he doesn’t. (See rules 8-2-2, 8-2-9a).

Early Sunday morning, a runner stole second base on a foul tip. “That’s a foul ball, he has to go back,” the coach yelled. “No he doesn’t,” I replied. “Well, that’s not fair. That can’t be the right rule,” he said.

On Monday afternoon, a kid got in a rundown between first and second base. While midway back to first base, he turned and ran toward right field. (See rule 8-4-2a). I called him out and his coach yelled, “Come on blue, he can take any route back to the

base. There is no baseline!” Are. You. Kidding. Me? This same coach whined about balks. Now, trust me, there are times we have to be lenient with balks. If I wasn’t merciful on Memorial Day, I would’ve sounded like a Red Bull-swilling chicken out there, yelling, “Balk, balk, balk.” As he continued arguing, I imagined myself in a soft chair, with a cold drink, a bucket of fried chicken and not a care in the world.

On Tuesday, I got my fried chicken and a rare day off from umpiring. I don’t know which was more satisfying. (See I rule).

Seriously though, something needs to be done to turn Daddyball back into baseball.

It starts with the coaches and the organizations that sponsor the teams taking responsibility.

I umpired my last spring high school baseball game May 22.

Despite 21 weather postponements, I still worked 46 games, but I want more. I can’t recall any major arguments or displays of poor sportsmanship.

I only remember pretty good baseball, meeting a variety of new umpires and visiting many schools for the first time.

All the memories are good ones.

This weekend, my only option was “Daddyball,” which looks a lot like high school baseball, but with a whole new set of unpredictable characters. Some call it “Daddy Baseball,” but for now I don’t think it deserves “baseball” in its name.

Let’s just say that I’ve had much better weekends.

Now, there are a lot of good people, both parents and coaches, at the youth level. But, there are also some who should never be allowed near a baseball field.

Likewise, there are some bad umpires out there too.

The missed kick came after Taylor Opperman connected for the Knights on their 12th PK and gave them a 1-0 win in the title game of the Class 2A Boylan Sectional as their historic run continues into Tuesday’s DeKalb Supersectional.

Was there a part of Chapman that wished she could have come up with another save to win the game, or was she just relieved the shot went high and the Knights could continue the longest playoff run in school history?

“No, it’s just relief,” Chapman said with a big smile.

“Definitely just relief.”

Chapman made six saves for the Knights (19-3) in the first 100 minutes and added another in the penalty kicks.

Freeport (15-5) outshot Kaneland, 11-6, in the game.

“She’s a stud, but she’s done that all year,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “The defense has been strong all year. We’ve outscored our opponents 89-15 – and I had to double check it because I didn’t believe (we had given up that many goals) at first. But I guess we’ve given up 15 goals.”

Before this year, the Knights had never won a regional title. But a win over Rosary in Rochelle excised that demon – Rosary had eliminated the Knights four of the past five years, including on penalty kicks last year.

“We practice this all the time. All the time,” Parillo said. “Now we know why. It paid off. Last year we lost on PKs.” Parillo said he isn’t really a fan of penalty kicks.

“It’s an awful way to win, and it’s an awful way to lose,” Parillo said. “It truly is. I wish they’d get rid of PKs, but I’m not in charge.”

“It an emotional roller coaster,” Namio said. “You hate to see your season end on PKs, especially when we had all the chances we did.”

Freeport had chances to win the game both in regulation and extra time, including an empty goal in the first 10 minutes of extra time, but Lauren Ortiz was able to break up the shot of Jasmine Tillman.

Kaneland shot first on each of the PKs. Five times Freeport faced make-it-or-lose shots, but missed on the last time.

Kaneland made eight goals in the PK session while the Pretzels made seven. Fifteen different players scored the 15 goals.

“It feels awesome,” Chapman said. “We’re making history and it feels great. Especially since we lost to Rosary on PKs in the regional championship. Now we’re in the sectional championship and having to go through all those PKs, it really is awesome.”

The Knights will face Notre Dame at 5 p.m. Tuesday at DeKalb.

“We go from never winning a regional, now we’re elite eight,” Parillo said. “I don’t know what to say. It’s pretty amazing.”

Going back to the injury, what was going through your head when it first happened?

How hard was it to not be able to play?

You had surgery Wednesday?

How did it go?

Yes. They got in and they found out that I tore both menisci, too. They had to shave down one, so I lost about 25 percent of it and the other one they sewed so it will be okay. They didn’t see it in the original MRI because my ACL was too damaged.

What is the recovery time and process like?

They told me I’ll be in the brace I am now for about six

weeks. They also said I can start to try and put weight on it whenever I feel comfortable. Some time between the next six weeks to three months, I’ll be able to do more physical stuff like therapy.

The plan is to be back playing somewhere between six to eight months.

Is everything still in line with your scholarship to UW-Milwaukee?

Yes, everything stays the same. I called my the coach up there the day I found out.

He told me not to worry too much and has been super supportive this whole time.

He told me it was an accident, so it’s not like he was going to be mad. Another girl on the UW-Milwaukee team tore her ACL like three weeks before me, so I’ll have someone to recover with.

The first game was the toughest to miss. Having to sit and watch warm ups and not be able to participate was the worst part. After a while, it got easier because I realized I was still able to support them and be a leader off the field.

St. Charles East senior Mallory Mollenhauer had a senior season she will not forget ... but not for the reason she wanted. The senior defender tore her ACL, just 10 games into the season. She missed the rest of her high school career and had surgery Wednesday. Mollenhauer, who has a scholarship to play soccer at UW-Milwaukee, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey, in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, to talk about being unable to play, her recovery process and what her future holds. Here’s an edited transcript:

What will you remember most about this group?

They are just an incredible group of girls. We are all such close friends and it was more of a family than anything. I know other teams think they have that, but I really don’t think many had what we do.

I trust them with everything I have and it’s so amazing when you have a group of girls that you know always has your back.

Time-capsule letter allows mom to share insight Every time I thought about writing a letter to Holly, to be opened on the occasion of her high school graduation in four years, I worried I’d ramble off into the ether with what she calls my “inspirational speeches.”

So I hesitated … because, really, who wants more of that?

And besides, what do you say to a child you’ve loved for such a long time? How can mere words ever be enough?

My challenge aside, I really do love Rotolo Middle School’s end-of-middle-school time-capsule tradition.

Each departing eighth-grader’s time capsules can include pictures, written recollections and reflections and letters from parents.

I appreciate the opportunity this affords our children to consider their values and goals, and to see, later, how these may have shifted. And to reflect, too, I hope, on how they might have survived the events that prompted them, made adjustments and even blossomed.

It’s an exercise which will, no doubt, seed for them an awareness of the potential of their

My daughter prides herself on getting her ducks in a row.

So, naturally, several days before the items were due, she collected just about everything she wanted to include – except my letter.

Writing it didn’t come easy.

Yeah, I considered telling her more about how glad I am to be her mom, about how much I’ve enjoyed her and about how smart and witty and kind and hilarious and gentle and loving I think she is – but she wouldn’t believe me, anyway. Because, as she often retorts when I do, “Parents are supposed to say those things.”

They’re all true, of course, whether she likes it or not – so yeah, I said it again, in my letter.

I pondered, too, the value of dispensing advice in this missive. After all, surely there are things I can preemptively help her with as she flies out of my nest into adulthood, right?

As it happens, several months ago I opened a new document on my computer wherein I began typing random kernels of

wisdom I want my kids to learn.

For lack of a better title I saved it as “Before I Forget.” Every now and then something new occurs to me, so I add it. If you know me you know how utterly ridiculous it is that cleaning advice is the first thing I typed. “‘Barkeeper’s Friend’ is my favorite cleanser,” I wrote. “I keep trying other things but always come back to it – even though it’s not environmentally friendly – because it’s the only one that really removes stains!”

I’m struck as I write this now by how relatively late it was that I learned how to really clean a sink. Maybe that’s why it seemed important.

“Say thank you. Handwritten notes will never go out of style when true gratitude is felt.

In a pinch, an email will do. But say it, one way or another.”

“Since dryer heat kills everything, wash your laundry in cold water and save the hot water for your bubble baths.”

Yes, yes indeed.

“Take an extra ten seconds to zip up and put on those gloves before you sprint out the door.”

I’m guessing a polar vortex was bearing down upon us when I typed that.

“Don’t make huge decisions hastily or in the heat of the moment. If it still sounds good the next day, it just may be a good idea.”

“If you think a lady’s dress

really flatters her, good golly, don’t keep that opinion to yourself. Let her know. It might make her day.”

“Get a second opinion. And a third. But go with your OWN gut, in the end.”

Yes. Always.

You can see why Holly rolls her eyes whenever I open my mouth, and why I dragged my heels about getting this letter done. I felt paralyzed by that, “What if I forget to say the most important stuff?” question that stopped me in my tracks.

I recall being in the same boat three years ago, when Noah made his time capsule. I hesitated too long, then – and, as he didn’t prompt me as often as Miss Holly did, I’m pretty sure I scribbled my letter to him at the kitchen island as he scrambled out the door on his last day of middle school.

Holly got hers a day earlier.

“If you ever feel lonely or tired, or whatever, or just feel like you need a pick-me-up,” I wrote her, “I hope you’ll call me. Of course, if I’m the one who’s making you feel lonely or tired or annoyed, um, I’m sorry? I’ll always be sorry.

I never want you to feel any discomfort. I imagine you will, at times, though. Such is life.”

Creating a garden habitat for monarch butterflies One of my favorite books as a child was “The Travels of Monarch X” by Ross E. Hutchins. I was amazed at the journey taken by monarchs and have been fascinated by them ever since.

The typical lifespan of a monarch is quite short; most do not live more than a few weeks.

There are several generations born each spring and summer.

The last generation, born at the end of the summer, can live up to 9 months. It is this generation that makes the pilgrimage to Mexico where they remain until the following spring. And the cycle begins again.

LEARNING TO GROW Diana Stoll While we may not be able to have a major impact on the loss of Monarch habitat across the U.S. and in Mexico, our own gardens can provide a home.

A monarch’s body temperature must be at least 86 degrees in order to fly. A flat rock in a sunny location protected from wind would give them the ideal spot to warm their wings.

Grow a large variety of

nectar-producing plants that bloom throughout the season to give every generation a food source. Late-blooming plants are essential to fuel monarchs getting ready for migration.

Consider adding asters, bee balm, butterfly bushes, coneflowers, dianthus, foxgloves, gayfeather, hummingbird mint, Joe-Pye weed, pinks, sedum, turtlehead and yarrow to get your butterfly garden started.

Nectar-rich annuals include ageratum, alyssum, cosmos, lantana, pentas and zinnias.

Avoid using herbicides and pesticides in the landscape if

possible as they can harm both caterpillars and adult butterflies.

The most important thing we can all do to help monarch butterflies is to plant milkweed.

Menopause brings changes to sexual function and desire Dear Doctor K: I have recently entered menopause. Can you discuss how menopause might affect my sex life?

Dear Reader: As a woman approaches and enters menopause, her ovaries gradually make less and less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. The drop in these hormones – of estrogen in particular – can affect how a woman experiences sex.

Estrogen stimulates the growth of breast tissue. It maintains blood flow to and lubrication of the vagina. The decline and eventual end to estrogen production provokes a host of symptoms.

These include hot flashes, fatigue, vaginal dryness and loss of libido.

Many of these changes can have unwanted effects on a woman’s sex life.

Other physical changes also take place, to varying degrees, as a woman enters menopause. For example, as a woman gets older, blood flow to her genitals decreases. She will experience a thinning of the vaginal lining. Her vagina will lose muscle tone and become less elastic. These changes can make sex more painful and less enjoyable.

A woman may have less sexual desire, or fewer sexual

She may have less vaginal lubrication and less expansion of the vagina during arousal. Less blood will enter the clitoris and lower vagina, and the clitoris will become less sensitive.

Orgasm may become less certain. It may take longer to achieve orgasm, or it may not occur at all.

When it does occur, it may be less intense. Finally, as a woman gets older, she will return more quickly to an unaroused state.

Does this mean the end of a fulfilling sex life? It certainly doesn’t have to. For some older couples, fewer inhibitions and a deeper understanding of their needs compensate for the physical consequences of aging. And these physical changes can provide an impetus for developing a new and satisfying style of lovemaking – one that’s based more on extended foreplay and less on intercourse and orgasm.

If certain positions cause pain, see if you can experiment and find

positions that don’t. Women who have sex on top of their partner often are better able to control the force of the thrusts that cause pain – and thereby reduce or eliminate it. In addition, slower, more relaxed foreplay can encourage more vaginal lubrication.

The physical changes can be reversed or reduced with vaginal lubricants and moisturizers, or hormone therapy (cream, not pills). Estrogen cream applied to the vagina is effective in improving vaginal lubrication. An advantage of the cream, compared to estrogen in pill form, is that the estrogen remains largely in the vagina and doesn’t travel in the blood to be carried elsewhere in the body.

When the main problem with sex is a lack of sexual desire, testosterone therapy can sometimes help improve a woman’s desire. Even though we think of testosterone as a male hormone, it is naturally made (in smaller amounts) by women and increases sexual desire.

Sixteen-year-old girl falls for retreat counselor Dr. Wallace: Last July I met a super guy at our church retreat. He was a counselor, and I was one of 50 teens attending the two-week retreat. He is a 21-yearold college student, and I’m 16. We like each other very much, and I’ve been going with him ever since. He’s from Toledo and goes to Ohio State University, so we don’t see each other very much. He has an aunt here in town, so he does try to visit me every 3 or 4 weeks, and he stays with her. My parents knew how old he was, and were surprised he looked so young when they met him, but they did allow me to go out with him.

Last weekend he was in town and went with our family to church on Sunday. When he was ready to leave to return to OSU, my dad asked him if he thought he was a bit too old for me.

He said he didn’t think so. My mom said she thought we should end the steady relationship but that we could still see each other when he is in town. Both parents thought it would be better if I date guys my own age and he should date girls closer to his age. He told them he would abide by their wishes, and I gave him back his ring.

Children whose parents smoke are at much greater risk of smoking themselves, but parents can decrease a child’s likelihood if they let the child know clearly and repeatedly that smoking is a nasty habit and that they do not approve of it.

You should explain this in no uncertain terms, and this message should never change!

P.S.: Some smokers who have been addicted for 20 or more years have become smokefree. So can you!

Robert Half, who founded the company of the same name that is the world’s first and largest accounting and finance staffing firm, said, “When one teaches, two learn.” I never thought about that, but it can be so true.

When declaring in a contract at the bridge table, it is usually better to have two chances to make your contract than only one. But, strangely, sometimes two can be worse than one.

In this deal, for example, how should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest heart?

In the auction, North’s threeheart cue-bid asked South to bid three no-trump with a heart stopper. (If North had a stopper, he would have bid no-trump himself.)

South starts with eight top tricks: one heart (given the lead), one diamond and six clubs.

Should he turn to spades or diamonds for the extra winner?

Before we get that far, though, declarer must put up dummy’s heart queen, the honor from the shorter side first. Here, the queen wins. So, South knows that if East gains the lead, he will play a heart through the king, and West will cash four tricks.

That might prompt declarer to take two diamond finesses, since each one is into the safe West hand. However, there is a much more important point for declarer to realize. If East has the spade ace, the contract can always be defeated.

So, South should just lead the spade king from the dummy (or cross to his hand with a club and play his spade toward the dummy). Here, he cannot be defeated.
