uesday started so beautifully as the players took the field for the first of two games in the girls soccer Conant Sectional semifinal.

St. Charles East and St. Charles North girls were at it again on the pitch and were well into the second half of their game.

I had noticed the storm moving

its way around the field and the clouds actually looked pretty.

Then the lightning started and the field cleared.

Parents and spectators had to

leave the stands, and the game was put on hold for several hours. Springtime in Chicago is certainly not dull.

For the 2013-14 school year, Mutchler’s base salary is $203,720. In the 2014-15 contract year, his salary will be $207,693, a $3,973 increase.

For the 2015-16 contract year, his salary will be $211,743, an increase of $4,050.

For the 2016-17 contract year, his salary will be $215,872, an increase of $4,129. And for the 2017-18 contract year, his salary will be $220,081, an increase of $4,209.

In total, his salary increase over four years will be $16,361, according to information provided by district spokeswoman Kelley Munch.

Juby said in a text message that she voted against it because she does not support multiyear contracts.

previous year, according to the contract extension.

Mutchler gets $5,000 contributed to the tax-deferred annuity every year as part of his compensation, a 403D, comparable to a 401K in private industry, officials said.

Board president Mark Grosso said at the time the additional money was a reflection of Mutchler’s good work, especially the state-required teacher evaluation process without hiring any extra employees to do it.

Mutchler was credited for the $375,000 federal Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools grant for a multiagency disaster training drill, and improvement in student academic achievement, Grosso said.

The contract extension gave Mutchler a 2.5 percent pay increase to more than $203,720 for the 2013-14 school year. It also extended his fiveyear contract by one year to June 30, 2018. The previous contract listed his base salary as $198,751.

Firefighters called to Geneva store, but no fire found Officials discovered burning smell was coming from chandelier

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A light fixture in a second-hand clothing store in Geneva’s downtown caused some concern Thursday afternoon when the business owner smelled something burning but saw no smoke or flames.

Geneva Fire Deputy Chief Mark Einwich said firefighters were called to Always in Style, 516 W. State St., at about 1 p.m., and just as quickly, the incident was over.

“We did not have to do any extinguishment,” Einwich said. “It was a light fixture in the back of the store.”

Store owner Christine Rykoskey said firefighters determined the smell was electrical and was coming from a chandelier.

“And they were kind enough to remove it and

throw it away,” Rykoskey said. “The fixture and the smell are gone.”

Rykoskey said ladies in the store, which features designer and higher-end second-hand women’s clothing and accessories, continued shopping when the firefighters arrived.

“Then the firefighters said, ‘Ladies, you have to go outside.’ You know how it is if you find something pretty,” Rykoskey said, laughing.

“And we always have a halfprice sale. We are full of goodies.”

Mishap damages electric generating capacity

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com A malfunctioning water storage tank at the Prairie State Energy Campus, near Marissa in downstate Illinois, will not affect power availability, the company said this week in a news release. That includes the electric utilities of Batavia and Geneva, which are among 300 communities that invested in the coal-fired power plant.

According to a statement from the power plant, when one of its two 800-megawatt units was taken offline for a scheduled maintenance outage, a water storage tank overflowed. This caused “an unexpectedly high release of steam and water that damaged the siding and associated equipment.”

“There was no explosion, no fire and no injuries that occurred,” spokeswoman Ashlie Kuehn said.

The plant uses water to make the steam that turns its turbines to make electricity,

“The power plant has some very key components, and two components that make power are the boiler and turbine generator, and they were not damaged,” Kuehn said.

“The storage tank needs to be repaired and the siding, and we expect those to be competed by mid to late June when the [second] unit is going to be returned to service.”

Once repairs are completed, Unit 2 is expected to be returned to service so it will produce power for most of the summer, according to the company’s statement.

Geneva is a member of – and has a contract with – Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency for an entitlement share of 35 megawatts in Prairie State Generating Company, which owns Prairie State Energy Campus, a coal-fired downstate power plant.

Batavia also is a member of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency and is in a long-term contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he’s not aware of any impact the incident might have on electricity supply or costs to the city.

“There could be, but I’m not aware of any at the moment,” Schielke said. “I’ve seen some pictures online of siding blown off some of the buildings there, but nothing that would a have major impact here.”

Geneva officials were unavailable for comment.

“There needs to be an exhaustive investigation into the cause of the explosion and into safety procedures at the plant,” executive director Sandy Buchanan said in a statement. “That investigation should take place in a transparent manner so that everyone concerned about the plant can learn as much as possible as soon as possible.”

Kuehn said officials are still in the process of assessing what caused the tank to overflow and release steam.

“There was no explosion,” Kuehn said, countering Buchanan’s comments. “There was a release of steam and water.”

The cities’ investments in Prairie State Energy Campus have come under fire by the Sierra Club and local citizens.

Community parade to step off Sunday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The internationally known Jesse White Tumbling Team is among the new additions to Sunday’s fifth annual North Aurora Community Parade.

The parade, organized by the North Aurora Mothers Club, will step off at 3 p.m. at Clocktower Plaza on the corner of Randall Road and Oak Street and then proceed east on Oak Street, ending at North Aurora Island Park on the riverfront.

“It is a great way for the community to get together,” said Cristy Petitjean, a North Aurora Mothers Club member and the parade’s coordinator.

The Jesse White Tumbling Team was founded in 1959 by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Other new entries in the 42-unit parade include “Star Wars” characters and representatives from the Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville, she said.

This year’s theme is “Heroes Among Us.” After the parade, the North Aurora River District Alliance will sponsor a party with food vendors,

family-friendly activities and the annual rubber duck race.

The parade’s grand marshal is Steve Miller, who recently retired as North Aurora fire chief. Miller also is receiving the North Aurora Mother Club’s Commitment to Community award this year.

The winners of the North Aurora King and Queen scholarships are West Aurora seniors Andrew Auriene and Alicia Rotolo.

From 2 to 5 p.m., there will be temporary road closings for the parade on Oak Street from Randall Road to Lincolnway (Route 31), Adams Street from Oak to State Street, State Street between Routes 31 and 25, and Grant Street at State Street.

The North Aurora River District Alliance’s duck race is a fundraiser for the group.

Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a “Quak Pack,” which is five tickets.

The group wants to install a rain garden next to its Water Wonders interactive stream on the riverfront.

“We hope to break ground this year,” said Chris Faber, the group’s treasurer, who also is a North Aurora village trustee.

Mike is survived by his wife of 45 years, Laura (nee Melvin); two children, Kristin (George) Santillan of Geneva and George David Stuts of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Meg, Kate and Jack Santillan of Geneva; two brothers, Steven (Andrea) Stuts and Lawrence (Jackie) Stuts; and many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Molly Stuts.

Kaneland announces new member of FREE ADMISSION administrative team

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE– Michael Purcell, an administrator in Oswego School District 308, will be the new director of educational services for sixth through 12th grades in Kaneland School District 302.

Purcell will replace Erika Schlichter, who is leaving for a job in Huntley School District 158. Purcell currently is the assistant director of secondary education for Michael District 308.

P u r c e l l ’ s Purcell hiring was announced at Wednesday’s Kaneland School Board meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

According to a news release from District 302, Purcell will begin in his new role July 1. He will begin his contract at a salary of $102,500, plus benefits.

At the meeting, Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said Purcell “very, very clearly emerged from the interview process.” According to the release, Purcell was selected from a pool of 29 applicants and was selected because of “his administrative experience, student focus, curriculum and leadership experience and his vision for how the department of educational services can enhance learning for students.”

Purcell previously worked as the director of summer learning for Naperville School District 203, according to the release.

He also worked as a high school math teacher.

According to the District 308 website, Purcell works with the district’s Common Core steering committee leadership and the district’s math curriculum team leadership.

Among areas of responsibility are online courses, summer school oversight and graduation oversight.

SUGAR GROVE – A policy that would automatically enter family information in Kaneland School District elementary school directories will be re-examined after some school board members objected at Wednesday’s meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

The proposal was listed among the proposed updates and changes to student handbooks for the 2014-15 school year. Families would have been included unless they chose to opt out of the directory, which provides information such as parent and child names, email addresses and phone numbers.

Board members Tony Valente and Teresa Witt previously objected to the opt-out policy, but the item was on Wednesday’s consent agenda, for the second and final reading of the handbook changes. Witt requested pulling the item out

of the consent agenda.

Ultimately, the board OK’d all other changes to the handbooks on all levels, but voted separately on the opt-out policy at the elementary-school level, which failed. Valente, Witt and Peter Lopatin voted against the opt-out policy. Gale Pavlak abstained. Pedro Rivas, Veronica Bruhl and Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, voted for the policy.

The directories exist at elementary schools, but Witt said there should be an opt-in policy instead. She said there could be safety concerns. Valente asked for the rationale of the opt-out policy. Superintendent Jeff Schuler said it was a request from parents.

Valente asked how many parents had requested that change. Bruhl said she heard from “numerous” parents at Blackberry Creek Elementary School.

She said parents might use the information for social reasons. For instance, students are not allowed to

Local police share traffic campaign results KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Special traffic safety campaigns by St. Charles and Campton Hills police netted a total of seven driving under the influence arrests in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day, the departments announced this week in news releases.

The 18-day enforcement period was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

In St. Charles, officers charged five motorists with DUI and issued these citations: 20 for safety-belt violations, three for driving with suspended or revoked licenses, five for driving without insurance, 18 for speeding and 18 for other violations.

Additionally, St. Charles police gave 34 warnings.

Meanwhile, Campton Hills police charged two with DUI, issued 76 speeding tickets and cited two with seat-belt violations.

“Though our officers were out with intent on enforcing seat-belt laws, very few violators were found,” Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said in a written statement. “I want to thank the local motoring public for their compliance with the seat-belt laws.”

The campaign ended Monday, but Hoffman said that is no excuse for motorists to stop using seat belts.

“Our officers are out all year long,” he said. “If you or your passengers, in the front seat or back seat, are caught not wearing a seat belt, day or night, you will be cited for the safety violation.”

James T. Keegan was selected from a pool of 75 applicants that eventually was narrowed to two, Koenen said.

“We had strong candidates,” he said.

The last round of interviews included the city’s elected officials, Koenen said,

“We want this process to be as representative as it can be,” said Michael Isaacson, the Kane County Health Department assistant director

for community health, in addressing the more than 100 people who attended Thursday’s kickoff session at Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva.

The last Kane County Community Health Assessment was done in 2011.

That report revealed the top six threats to community health in Kane County were obesity; chronic disease, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer; infant

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com More than 500 people are expected to participate in Sunday’s Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race on the Fox River, an increase from last year’s race.

As of Thursday, 510 people have registered for the race, now in its 53rd year. Last year, 425 people participated in the race.

“It’s great to get people out to the Fox River,” said Jeff Long, public relations manager for the Fox Valley Park District, which sponsors the race. “That’s been our mission, to get more people out to the Fox River.”

Long also oversees the race. Two race lengths will be featured – a 10-mile race from St. Charles and a 6-mile race from Batavia – both finishing at the Illinois Avenue bridge in Aurora. Long said the two race lengths allow for paddlers of all abilities to participate.

In the Batavia race, about 200 people are signed up for the race this year, compared to 140 people last year, he said.

“A lot of people aren’t serious paddlers,” Long said.

“They just want to be part of the festivities.”

People can register Sunday for the race. The St. Charles leg of the race begins at 9 a.m., from Mount St. Mary Park on Route 31, and the Batavia portion starts at 10:30 a.m. from the VFW at 645 S. River St. in Batavia, just south of downtown. Boats will be launched in heats of 10 every four minutes from both start areas. Free shuttle buses will run continuously along the route beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Paddlers are advised to arrive at their start areas at least one hour before launch time. Four shuttle buses will be running from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. When the race ends, the action will continue with an outdoor party and awards ceremony at the finish area in McCullough Park at 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora.

Each registered racer will receive a commemorative race T-shirt and goodie bag after the race.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, was at the session. He pointed to the growing heroin use in the area as a problem.

“It will take groups like this to get a grasp on it,” Gengler said.

Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said he thought it was good to get agencies to-

gether to talk about different issues.

“We probably share a lot of the same issues,” Banker said.

Laurie Call, director of the Illinois Public Health Institute’s Center for Community Capacity Development, told attendees that public health is a shared responsibility.

“It is not just the responsibility of health care providers to improve health,” Call said.

“Everyone has a unique con-

tribution.”

The IDPH is helping Kane County Health Department do a new health assessment of the county. As part of the process, there will be community focus groups as well as a phone survey, Call said.

“We are trying to find out, how healthy are our residents,” Call said.

GENEVA – Municipal police officers in Kane County soon could carry a medication that would help save people from overdoses of heroin and other drugs.

Under a Kane County H e a l t h D e p a r t m e n t p r ogram, police officers would be trained to administer Narcan, a trade name for Naloxone – a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Barb Jeffers, executive director of the Kane County Health Department, told a County Board committee last week that an orientation was held in April, and she hopes to get officers trained and

equipped with doses by this summer.

“If you look at the data, it’s not going away,” she said.

In a meeting earlier this year, Jeffers presented data on the number of heroin-related deaths in Kane County since 2009. At seven such deaths, 2010 recorded the lowest number. The peak was recorded in 2012 with 26 deaths.

The deaths have occurred throughout the county, including in St. Charles, North Aurora, Geneva, Batavia and Elburn.

Although emergency medical technicians already administer Narcan, Jeffers said, the new program targets police because they typically

Supreme Court rationalizes death penalty

By NOAH FELDMAN Bloomberg News On the surface, the Supreme Court’s death penalty holding Tuesday seems like a win for rationality and smart statistics. The 5-4 decision in Hall v. Florida said the state may not use an absolute cutoff of 70 on the IQ test as its measure of intellectual disability, below which a murderer cannot be executed – because the standard error of measurement on the test is five points plus or minus.

Freddie Lee Hall, the defendant, had scored 71, 72, 73 and 80 on his tests.

The Florida Supreme Court said he wasn’t intellectually disabled because he’d broken 70. Justice Anthony Kennedy, with the four liberals on his

side, overturned the capital sentence.

On closer examination, though, the decision is less satisfying than it appears.

Standard error is itself determined with reference to the degree of confidence we seek in the measurements we’re making. It is thus, in an important sense, based on convention – and the Supreme Court was relying not on its own statistical analysis of IQ scores, or Florida’s, but on a medical consensus. The decision therefore embraces a kind of outsourced rationality, which has the unfortunate effect of making the death penalty seem rational.

If statistics aren’t your preferred mode of expression, don’t worry: The ones in this case are actually pretty sim-

ple, and so is the law. In 2002, the Supreme Court in Atkins v. Virginia held it unconstitutional to execute people with intellectual disability – and left it to the states to define the term. Florida defined it as “significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning” alongside deficits in adaptive behavior. The same statute measures “subaverage” as an IQ of 70, two standard deviations below the mean of 100.

The Florida Supreme Court interpreted the number 70 as an absolute cutoff – if you score above 70 on the test, no other evidence of intellectual disability matters.

Kennedy’s opinion rejects the idea of considering only IQ evidence, then condemns the Florida court’s “refusing to recognize that the score is,

on its own terms, imprecise.”

Kennedy points out that “the professionals who design, administer and interpret IQ tests have agreed, for years now, that IQ test scores should be read not as a single fixed number but as a range.”

The range is, according to Kennedy, the same as the standard error, which he calls “a statistical fact, a reflection of the inherent imprecision of the test itself.” The core of his argument is that when a defendant’s score is under 75, the state needs to allow other evidence of disability.

What could possibly be wrong with this analysis, which may reduce executions of the intellectually disabled, and achieves this worthy goal through a correct, rational statement of the nature of

standard error? Should it not be welcomed as another incremental limitation of the death penalty?

The trouble is, each time the Supreme Court limits the death penalty, it offers an implicit justification for preserving it in most cases. The decision in this case accepts the argument that it’s inhumane to execute people who don’t fully comprehend what they’ve done or why they’re being punished. In so doing, it implies that a murderer who does comprehend his crimes deserves to die.

The Illinois Rural Health Association relies greatly on state-funded programs to support medically underserved populations across the state.

If the current state income tax is not maintained at its current level, the health care services provided at hospitals, Rural Health Clinics and public health departments will suffer greatly and impact thousands of Illinois residents who currently depend on them.

In the mental health community, core psychiatric services and crisis services would be

eliminated. Unfortunately, if an individual does not get the proper medical care in the early stages of an illness or be able to stay on their medication, the illness is not eliminated, it worsens and becomes more expensive to treat in the long run and makes people who could be leading productive lives unproductive, not to mention the human pain and suffering.

The Illinois Rural Health Association urges the members of the General Assembly to make what may not be the most popular choice, but the most practical and responsible one, by voting to maintain the current state income tax rate.

Mall gets a new beginning Changes ahead as Charlestowne Mall becomes The Quad St. Charles

T. CHARLES – After 23 years, Charlestowne Mall is headed for a new beginning.

The Krausz Companies Inc. became the latest owners of the mall in November at a price of more than $9.5 million. Its staff have big plans to redevelop the site into The Quad St. Charles. The mall has lost many tenants and customers over the years since its heydays in the 1990s.

The owners have applied for a demolition permit and could start some teardown and construction as early as July, city officials said.

No firm date on a groundbreaking has been set following the passing of an initial April target date. Chuck May, project director of The Quad, said there will be no updates about the site until after this month.

While there hasn’t been too much visible progress to the public, May has given frequent reports to the St. Charles City Council on the behind-the-scenes work to transform the mall.

The first phase of the mall redevelopment will focus on completing exterior work to the mall building. The developer is also actively recruiting tenants and finalizing the architectural designs of the new mall, said Russell Colby, the city’s planning division manager.

Retailers look at infrastructure in a different way than they had before, said Jay Krigsman, Krausz Companies executive vice president. This means Krausz has to revamp the mall facility, which originally opened in 1991, to meet the needs of modern businesses.

“I think our plan rendering does a good job of solving those problems,” Krigsman said.

That plan includes demolishing the former Sears anchor store in the westernmost part of mall.

The store has sat empty since 2011,

when Sears left the building.

Another part of the mall headed for demolition is the food court, located in the central north area on the upper level.

Initial renderings for other open areas of the mall show cozy seating areas and fireplaces.

Parts of the mall property will be regraded from its current mix of slopes and inclines. This will involve construction work out in the mall’s parking lots, according to the city of St. Charles website.

The regrading will allow for the option of standalone businesses in outlots on the perimeter of the mall property, Colby said.

CHARLESTOWNE 18 UPGRADES Near the former Sears property on the mall’s west side is the Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18 movie theater, which also is due for a physical upgrade.

Classic Cinemas still is in discussion with Krausz Companies about the final revised mall layout, said Chris Johnson, vice president of Downers Grove-based Tivoli Enterprises, which operates Classic Cinemas.

Johnson declined to go into specifics, but said the theater will be updated in terms of look and comfort.

The theater already has added Datasat 7.1 sound and upgraded its movie projectors to 4K resolution, which is the latest technology, Johnson said.

“We are 100 percent dedicated to that site and doing everything in our power to making it the best venue in the area,” Johnson said.

The mall redevelopment will result in better visibility of the theater from Route 64 south of the mall property, Johnson said. Site plans include the addition of escalators running directly down to the movie theater’s box office. The current escalators near the theater are down a hall and outside the former Sears building.

the west side of the mall closer to the former Sears site. In advance of the Sears building demolition, the group this month relocated to another suite closer to Kohl’s and Von Maur.

MyStage’s latest leasing agreement with the mall lasts until the end of December, Flores said. She said it was a blessing for MyStage to be able to have a home in the mall for the past few years.

“I think ultimately when we moved into the mall that we were on borrowed time …

I wasn’t expecting to be there forever,” Flores said.

MyStage would like to partner with a local property owner willing to work with the group to subsidize the rent until it breaks even, Flores said. About 85 percent of the MyStage families are from St. Charles, and about 10 percent are from Geneva.

“I think we’re all here for the kids,” Flores said. “This is their theater and their stage.”

Future of carousel uncertain

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If anyone is looking for a double-decker Italian carousel, there is one available in St. Charles.

The carousel in the Charlestowne Mall’s food court is for sale, Chuck May, project director of The Quad St. Charles, wrote in an email.

May wrote that he has “several” people interested in buying the amusement ride, but no one has finalized a deal with him yet.

He did not specify what the asking price is and declined to say what would happen to the carousel if it isn’t sold before the food court teardown begins. The teardown will be part of the mall’s transformation into The Quad St. Charles with new stores and restaurants.

The carousel’s $1 rides came to a close Jan. 20, according to a sign posted in the food court.

The sign said the carousel will no longer operate and thanked customers for their patronage.

Johnson said she would make a whole day out of a trip to the Charlestowne Mall.

She would take Blake to a children’s movie at the Charlestowne 18 theater at the mall, then grab a carousel ride before buying him a balloon at the dollar store that used to be at the mall.

With the carousel shut down, Johnson instead takes Blake and her other son, Halen, 1, to a children’s play area located near the open center of the mall. The center area would be a good location for the carousel, she said.

“They shouldn’t let that great thing go,” she said. “I would hate to see that get disassembled.”

The theater and the other existing anchors, Carson Pirie Scott, Kohl’s and Von Maur, will remain open during construction.

The Lenscrafters store inside the mall will remain open during construction and will remain a tenant after the mall’s 2015 relaunch, May said.

Lenscrafters is located on the mall’s east side near Carson Pirie Scott. Also on the east side is a branch location of the Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA. The society would certain-

ly like to stay in the mall, wrote Jean Latz Griffin, the society’s Midwest branch president, in an email.

The society has a growing, active group of Fox Valley-area residents who enjoy practicing Tai Chi and benefiting from its positive effects on their health, she wrote.

“We have not reached a decision because we don’t yet have enough information regarding how the construction will affect us,” Griffin wrote in the email.

Another mall tenant, Marquee Youth Stage, will stay at least until the end of the year.

Marquee Youth – or MyStage – is a nonprofit children’s theater and performing arts group.

MyStage moved into the mall in fall 2011 after agreeing to pay a percentage of the show’s sales to the previous mall operators, said Connie Flores, a MyStage founder and its artistic director.

Area qualifiers in the IHSA boys tennis state tournament generally handled whatever was thrown at them with aplomb Thursday during the first day of the tournament, although only St. Charles East singles standout Jasper Koenen remains in the championship bracket entering today’s second day of competition.

Koenen said he had several “acting moms” helping cheer him on Thursday as his mother, Irene, and fresh-offknee-surgery father, HenkJan, dealt with a hectic day, arriving only for part of his third match.

In their place, a handful of surrogates tended to Koenen’s well-being, including veteran East girls tennis coach Sena Drawer and the mother of former East standout Justin Bowman.

“It was nice,” Koenen said. “It’s sometimes weird not seeing [my parents] but I guess it’s getting ready for next year. They won’t be able to make every, single Michigan State match, so I’ve got to kind of make that transition to just having a coach, teammates and other fans than just always having your parents.

But I’m definitely going to miss them.”

Koenen’s parents didn’t miss much in the drama department. The burly senior improved to 31-0 on the season with a trio of straight-set victories.

Koenen, coming off a fourth-place state finish as a junior, has yet to drop a set this season.

“This is exactly how I envisioned my day going,” Koenen said after breezing through York’s Brendan Peterson, Loyola Academy’s Peter Horne and Metamora’s Mitchell Nguyen on a pleasant, sunny day. “Three quali-

Koenen will resume play this morning against Edwardsville’s Brandon Harris, who also had three straightset wins Thursday.

Also advancing to the second day – albeit in consolation play – are area doubles teams Grant Spellman and Aaron Amburgey (St. Charles North), Ryan Sterling and Adam Maris (Batavia) and Ryan Doeckel and John Potts (Geneva).

As if facing rugged state competition weren’t enough to battle, Spellman also dealt with a pair of glasses that no longer fit as snuggly as they used to. He considered the slipping spectacles only a minor annoyance.

“I’ve always liked them but they’re reaching the end of their life,” Spellman said.

“Maybe I’ll find a nice little spot on the shelf for them, remember them fondly, and get some new ones.”

Spellman and Amburgey beat opponents from Benet and Peoria Richwoods in straight sets before running into the No. 1 doubles seed in the tournament, falling to Hinsdale Central’s Lope Adelakun and Chase Hamilton, 6-2, 6-0.

Very consistent. They predicted our shots really well,” Amburgey said. “I guess if we had to play them again, we would probably try to mix it up a little bit more, but they just played traditional tennis really well. That’s why they’re the best.”

Spellman and Amburgey had a strong rivalry this spring with Batavia’s Sterling and Maris. The North pair won the regular-season match before Batavia’s tandem avenged the loss in the conference tournament, leaving Bulldogs coach Brad Nelson somewhat miffed that Spellman and Amburgey entered the state tournament seeded

while Maris and Sterling were not.

Coming in unseeded was “definitely a motivating factor” for Maris and Sterling, Nelson said, and the two took it out on first-round opponents David Dobrik and Nikita Lunkov of Vernon Hills, who like Spellman and Amburgey, were a 16-32 seed.

Maris and Sterling won the match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, then took another three-setter in the second round over a team from Lockport before falling to Edwardsville’s Jack Desse and Logan Ware in the third round, 6-4, 6-2.

“They weren’t intimidated at all,” Nelson said of playing the Edwardsville team, a 3-4 seed in the doubles draw.

“They just got off to a slow start. I think that first time here for both of them, I think they were a little nervous at first, but once they settled down, they played great.”

The Vikings put up a threespot in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3 with the benefit of one hit. In the fifth, Lake Park returned the favor, scoring a run on a bases-loaded walk – one of four in the inning – that turned out to be the winning run and sends the Lancers to an unlikely regional title matchup with West Chicago.

“They’re very good – they are not a 12 seed, and that’s one of the tough things about the IHSA seeding,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “You get teams that are hot after the seeding meeting or cold right after the meeting and it’s not really a true matchup.”

Lake Park will take on West Chicago in Saturday’s regional championship game after both teams pulled upsets in the semifinal round.

The sectional seedings say one thing. The result from May 2 indicates quite another.

No. 2 Conant has a slight seeding edge compared with No. 4 St. Charles East, but the Saints’ 3-0 pasting of Conant in a Naperville North tournament game earlier this month suggests the Saints are no underdog in today’s IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional final.

After his team topped Geneva, 3-1, in Wednesday’s sectional semifinal, Conant coach Jason Franco acknowledged some might consider East the team to beat based on the regular-season result.

“We hope they’re looking at that like that, too,” Franco said. “ … It was our fourth game in five days, and we didn’t have anything left.”

East coach Paul Jennison said he was in no position to judge whether Conant gave an atypical performance when the teams met during the regular season, but he loved what he saw on the Saints’ end.

“We train the girls with the mentality that they’ve got to be ready to come in at any time,” Jennison said. “I think the fact we were able to get all 22 players in the regional final really lifted the spirits and made everyone realize they need to be ready to step into a big game at any time.”

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com In the biggest game of the year, with a season and a Stanley Cup defense on the line, on a team loaded with elite veteran superstars, it was Brandon Saad – 21-year-old Brandon Saad – who simply wouldn’t let the Blackhawks lose Wednesday night.

It was Saad barreling through the neutral zone and attacking the net. It was Saad firing pucks on net, attempting 10 in all. It was Saad backchecking like crazy, forcing at least three turnovers. It was Saad keeping up with and making plays with Patrick Kane.

It was Saad setting up Michal Handzus’ game-winning goal in overtime.

It was Saad in full – a big, fast, Marian Hossa clone with uncanny strength on the puck to go along with his natural speed and innate confidence and hockey sense, far beyond

his years.

“What I saw last night was probably one of his best games I’ve ever seen him play,” said defenseman Michal Rozsival, echoing what everyone – even Saad himself – believed. “Just the way he played with so much confidence. He looked like he wanted to be the guy, the guy that makes the difference in the hockey game. I think he did.”

Kane said he was “awesome.” Jonathan Toews said he was Brandon Saad “unbelievable.”

High praise from guys who know a thing or two about putting a team on your back in the most pressure-packed of situations.

You hesitate to label it a breakout game for Saad, or call it his coming-out party. The 6-foot-1, 202-pounder has been awfully good from the start, since he became a full-time NHL player in the second game of the 2013 season – thrust on to the top line with Toews and Hossa and fitting right in at age 20. Saad and Kane, put on a line with Andrew Shaw in Joel Quenneville’s latest attempt to catch lightning a bottle, were electric together – Saad’s physical, net-crashing style and speed perfectly complementing Kane’s puck-work and vision. Kane had four assists, and Shaw added two. Saad and Kane have shown flashes of that natural chemistry before. In their very first game as linemates, way back in October in Minnesota, Saad set up a Kane goal with a sensational no-look, spin-o-rama pass.

Yet Wednesday night, in the giddy aftermath of Game 5, Quenneville said the new second line “might have been a discovery.”

“Hopefully, what we discovered could be a line for a long time,” Quenneville said.

Local watercolor artist to exhibit at Holmstad

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Holmstad, a faith-based, nonprofit retirement community, will host an artist’s reception for Aurora artist Rosemary Smillie from 1 to 3 p.m.

Sunday, June 8, in the Town Center Gallery, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia.

The artist’s reception and refreshments will be free and open to the public. The exhibit will feature 32 of Smillie’s watercolors, and will be available for viewings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, June 29.

Smillie, a professional artist who has worked in brass, oil, watercolor and pastel, said in a news release that she prefers the freedom of watercolor and that her work begins with an abstraction of colors and then a development of shapes and spaces until the finished painting materializes.

Smillie studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Chicago. Her work has hung in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and in corporate and private collections in the U.S., England and Russia, states the release.

Locally, Smillie’s paintings are in the Kane County Court House, Aurora City Hall, Aurora Public Library Provided image and Merchants National Bank, the release states.

Navy Seaman Liam M. Mulloy, son of Gearld M. and Karen C. Mulloy of Sugar Grove, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes.

During the eight-week program, Mulloy completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Mulloy is a 2013 graduate of Kaneland High School in Maple Park.

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, hosted Ambassador of Sweden to the U.S. Björn Lyrvall in Geneva to showcase strong cultural and economic ties between Sweden and the U.S. The Swedish Embassy’s “Sweden on the Road” tour bus arrived May 23 at City Hall, where Lyrvall greeted Hultgren, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns and Maria Jönsson, owner of The Gift Box, the only Scandinavian import store in Geneva.

Hultgren and Lyrvall both spoke during breakfast at Riverside Receptions. There, the ambassador received gifts from the city of Geneva and The Gift Box. Local business leaders and elected officials discussed the jobs and opportunities created in Illinois and abroad through the strong relationship between Sweden and the U.S. Hultgren, founder and chair of the Congressional Friends of Sweden Caucus, said in a state-

This small front-wheel-drive, fourdoor, five-occupant hybrid hatchback is ideal for long or short trips as mileage estimates, per the Environmental Protection Agency, are 43 miles per gallon in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Regular gasoline can be pumped into the 11.9-gallon tank.

During a week of driving a 2014 CT200 on city streets and interstate highways, the average fuel usage was 37.4 mpg. That was with, for the most part, one adult (the driver) aboard. With a family aboard, that mpg figure would change.

Leg room is OK at an official 42.1 inches in front. In the rear it is cramped at 32.9 inches. Children might endure longer trips in this vehicle if there are frequent stops along the way. In the city, it is an ideal commuter car. For normal suburban usage, the CT200h can carry spouses around town in comfort and the vehicle can be loaded with goodies from grocery stores, garden centers or shopping mall plazas. The split rear seats fold to expand storage space from 14.3 to 30 cubic feet.

The load floor is carpeted, lighted and comes with tiedowns. A key fob can remotely open the rear liftgate.

The CT200h is a sharp looking hatchback. With curves and ridges in front, on sides and the rear, this compact hybrid has a certain flashy appeal. It also exhibits fog lights in front and a spoiler on the hatch, plus edgy wing windows that curve around the rear. Bulbous wing windows can obstruct a view to the rear. Even so, sight lines are fairly good.

The CT200h is one of the more politically correct vehicles on the road. A lot of interior materials come from recycled products and can be recycled again. The two trims include one of bamboo. No animal hides are necessary either as Lexus seats are a leather-like material the company calls NuLuxe. Leather can be ordered in a $1,330 package.

The Lexus CT 200h is noted for a curvaceous exterior. The hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter, 134-horsepower four-cylinder engine in concert with an electric motor and nickel metal hydride battery.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper concert with a gasoline engine to provide the power. The more the electric end of the powerplant works, the less gas is needed. Hence, less reliance on a need of drilling for unrefined oil in unspoiled waters or lands of the world.

Although it shares a hybrid powertrain with the Toyota Prius (Lexus is Toyota’s luxury division), that is about the extent of likeness. The welded-steel unibody CT200h is toughened in suspension and frame to compete on a racetrack.

Performance and economy relies on a 98-horsepower, 1.8-liter, Atkinson-cycle, dual cam, inline four-cylinder engine combining with the hybrid’s electric motor to produce 134 horsepower. The power source, which is mated to a continuously variable transmission, results in a time of 0 to 60 miles per hour in 9.8 seconds, according to the factory. Acceleration on the highway is no problem as 650 volts provide a sufficient jolt when merging or passing on the interstate. The CVT means seamless travels up and down the torque spectrum. A CVT has no gear shifts, which might disappoint sport-minded drivers.

The CT200h can be driven a mile via battery alone up to 23 miles per hour.

After that the gasoline engine kicks in.

Regenerative braking, deceleration, and stop-start driving help on fuel economy and recharging the battery. An eco-meter keeps track of driving efficiency.

Power steering, an exhaust gas recirculation system, and the water pump operate electrically and not by belts taking energy from the gasoline engine. With an essentially beltless engine, fuel usage is diminished.

Drag has been reduced by a more streamlined flow of air over, around and under the 3,130-pound hatchback. One sees it by checking out underbody apertures and panels. Less drag means less fuel usage.

An independent suspension system is damped to maintain balance on sharp corners. The suspension includes double wishbone with coil springs and a stabilizer in front and the same in the rear. The 215 radial tires are mounted on 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels. Brakes are 10-inch ventilated discs in front and 10.9-inch solid discs in the rear.

There are four driving modes and drivers can activate one or the other via fingertip-operated controls. The modes are EV, Eco, Normal or Sport. Eco means less air conditioning to cut fuel consumption in stop-and-go traffic. EV lets the

vehicle operate by electric only at speeds of 23 mph or less. Normal shares battery and gas power. Sport means more use of throttle and gasoline. Efficiency can be measured via an Eco-meter.

Inside, the cabin is quiet. This vehicle is well-insulated.

On board is the usual array of power equipment for an entry-luxury hatchback, such as door locks, express windows (up/down on all four with anti-pinch protection), front heated seats, tilt and slide moonroof, and exterior heated and foldable mirrors. Besides the power features, standard fare includes smart push button start, sliding sun visors, scuff plates and air conditioning, six-speaker sound system for AM-FM and satellite radio, MP3 and compact disc players, USB port and Bluetooth, remote lighted entry, cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, dual sun visors with vanity mirrors and a host of beverage and coin storage bins. A cargo cover and floor mats are included.

Standard safety equipment includes airbags (depends on who is counting but they are there for front, sides, overhead and driver’s knee), antilock braking system , stability and traction controls, brake force distribution, brake assist, child safety door locks, child seat anchors and tethers, and seatbelts with headrests for five.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance and six years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain. First and second scheduled maintenance service is free.

The CT200h can be ordered as an F Sport model. The F Sport adds badging, fog lamps and multiple trim elements.

That F Sport styling can cost an additional $2,080. By adding a navigation package ($3,490) to the F Sport package, the cost of a $32,050 2014 CT200h will approach $38,000. Delivery is $910.

Fuel-efficient vehicles, such as hybrids and diesels, are becoming commonplace in today’s market. The federal government has mandated higher fuel economy fleet averages for all automotive manufacturers. To meet the requirements, manufacturers offer smaller, efficient cars to offset the fuel usage of their bigger gas hogs. Electrics play a tiny role (less than 1 percent of sales out of 15.5 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2013) in this effort to meet the government mandate.

‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’: A wildly hit-or-miss satire of westerns

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post When it was revealed that video of Charlize Theron’s reaction to 2013 Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane’s songs was not spontaneous exasperation but a pre-recorded part of the joke, we learned two things about the Oscar-winning actress: She’s not only a really good sport, but, boy, can she keep a straight face.

Both of these skills are in evidence in “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” a broad, wildly hit-or-miss satire of westerns co-starring Theron and MacFarlane (who also directed, produced and co-wrote the film). Crude, rude and – in the case of actor Liam Neeson’s derriere – briefly nude, the movie not only taxes Theron’s willingness to crack wise about her lady parts, but demonstrates that she can do so without cracking up on camera.

The same cannot be said of MacFarlane.

Look, no one ever accused the guy of being Sir Laurence Olivier. Best known as the creative jack-of-all-trades behind the cartoon series “American Dad,” “Family Guy” and “The Cleveland Show,” MacFarlane, when put in front of a camera, seems caught in a perpetual smirk, as though he’s inordinately pleased with himself.

Perhaps he has some right to be.

The new movie – in which MacFarlane plays a cowardly, lovelorn sheep farmer, with Theron as his romantic mentor and Neeson his gunslinging nemesis – is passably funny, assuming you have the stomach for jokes about diarrhea, sex, death and all manner of body parts (both human and sheep).

Judging by the rapid-fire, raunchy humor in the trailer, this is an effective combination. When stretched out to almost two hours by all the absurdist plotting, pop-culture asides and sometimes painfully awkward silences that MacFarlane is known for, it’s not quite so zingy.

In fairness, MacFarlane knows his own weakness. He’s not the hero of the movie, as his character, Albert, re-

This observational detachment – being in the movie, but not of it – can work, but only to the degree that you let it.

As the Village Voice favorably – and aptly – noted, MacFarlane is like the animated Roger Rabbit here, a cartoon stuck in a live action world.

Some viewers, however, may wish for a bit more commitment.

The disconnect between Albert and the world he inhabits is at times off-putting, especially when you compare MacFarlane’s performance with those of his co-stars. Theron is not only quite funny, but also fully invested in the role of Anna, a woman who pretends to be Albert’s girlfriend so that he can make his ex-squeeze, Louise (Amanda Seyfried), jealous.

Neil Patrick Harris also fully inhabits the role of Louise’s extravagantly mustachioed and egotistical lover, Foy. Though shallowly written, both parts are grounded in reality.

With a supporting cast as strong as this – supplemented by several surprise cameos from stars I won’t mention – does anyone care that MacFarlane can’t really act? It never hurt Jerry Seinfeld, whose paper-thin persona on his self-titled sitcom was made

plausible, if not fully three-dimensional, by the top-notch ensemble that the star surrounded himself with.

No, the problem isn’t MacFarlane’s inch-deep performance. In a way, we need him to splash through the proceedings like a kid in a puddle, making fun of such tropes of the western genre as the barroom brawl, the bordello girls with hearts of gold, the perfectly choreographed barn-dance blowout and the climactic gunfight. Cutting away from the action to comment on it is the joke. And it has become MacFarlane’s signature style.

The film’s failure isn’t one of restraint, either. As he demonstrated with his Academy Awards song, MacFarlane’s gift, such as it is, lies in pushing humor to the threshold of decorum and then charging across that line. That’s what we pay him for.

The real problem with “A Million Ways to Die in the West” is one of editing. There are a million jokes in it, but only 500,000 of them are funny.

• “A Million Ways to Die in the West” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains crude sexual and excretory humor, obscenity, violence, drug use and brief nudity. It runs 116 minutes.

Pacemakers have become smaller, more reliable Dear Doctor K: I’m scheduled to have a pacemaker inserted in a couple of weeks. Can you tell me what will happen during the procedure?

Dear Reader: A pacemaker is a little box that is placed beneath the skin of your chest. It has wires that run into your heart, attaching to its inner surface. A pacemaker regulates your heartbeat electronically.

The normal heart beats about 60 to 80 times a minute, with a regular rhythm. This happens because of special cells in your heart that generate electrical signals. In other words, every heart comes with its own natural “pacemaker.” When that natural pacemaker fails, a little electrical machine is placed inside you as a substitute.

The pacemaker basically does two things. First, it senses what your natural pacemaker is doing.

Then, if it senses your natural pacemaker is not sending proper signals, it substitutes for your natural pacemaker and sends the signals instead. Those electrical signals are painless, and they trigger a heartbeat.

Pacemakers are programmed to meet the needs of your heart, whether it beats too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The programmable part of the pacemaker, the little box, is called the pulse generator. It often weighs less than 1 ounce and is encased in titanium. The wires from the pulse generator to the heart are called leads. At the ends of the leads are tiny metal plates (electrodes) that attach to the inner surface of your heart. These electrodes pick up your heart’s natural electric signals and send them to the pulse generator.

When the pulse generator determines that it needs to send your heart an electrical nudge, that signal travels back along the leads to your heart muscle.

During your surgery, a patch of skin on your chest, near your collarbone, will be shaved, cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. A 2- to 3-inch incision will be made, which provides access to a very large vein. Your doctor will thread the pacemaker leads through this vein into your heart. There, the tips of the electrodes will attach to the heart wall.

Once the electrodes are inside your heart, a type of X-ray called fluoroscopy will confirm that the electrodes are in the correct place.

Your doctor will test the leads electronically to ensure they are operating properly. Then your doctor will connect the pacemaker leads to the pulse generator.

The pulse generator is usually placed below the left or right collarbone. Your doctor will create a small pocket in the skin under the collarbone incision and insert the pulse generator into this pocket.

Finally, the doctor will close the incision with stitches. The entire procedure usually takes about one hour.

There are some plays that seem pointless, but upon closer inspection prove that you are doing something vital. In this deal, the “pointless” play occurs at trick one.

South is in four hearts.

West leads the spade two. After declarer plays low from the dummy, why does it make a difference whether East plays his 10 or king?

Nowadays many Wests would have made a takeout double over one heart. I am still not convinced it is a good idea with a relatively weak 4-3-3-3. South’s jump to four hearts was a slight overbid with such a balanced hand, but whenever you smell a game, bid that game.

If East plays the spade king at trick one, it does not cost the defense a spade trick, but declarer can then make his contract. He wins with his ace and drives out the heart ace.

West takes his ace and cashes the spade queen, but even if he leads another spade, South ruffs in the dummy, plays off his two top clubs, draws trumps ending on the board, and runs the clubs.

Now let East “finesse against his partner” by putting in the spade 10 at trick one. Then West, when he gets in with his heart ace, can lead another low spade. East can take the trick and shift to a diamond, giving the defenders one spade, one heart and two diamonds.

The finesse against partner retains an entry card for East.
