ST. CHARLES – The City of St. Charles Visitors Cultural Commission is soliciting requests for funding from organizations that support and promote tourism, culture, history and the arts in St. Charles.

The following eligibility guidelines will be used to determine which organizations will be recommended for funding.

Organizations must: • Be based in St. Charles.

• Be certified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 nonprofit corporation.

• Be in operation for a minimum of two years.

• Provide the most recently completed annual report and the current budget, outlining anticipated programs and expenditures.

• Provide IRS form 990.

• Provide a narrative showing how the organization’s mission aligns with the cultural commission’s mission to support and promote tourism, culture, history and the arts in St. Charles.

• Must complete funding request application form.

• Must provide amount requested to be funded along with detailed list of use of

funds.

Breakfast event kicks off May 16 in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Breakfast in Red is set for May 16 at Hotel Baker, 100 W. Main St., St. Charles.

‘I always wanted to be a firefighter’ Miller retires as N. Aurora fire chief

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Growing up in North Aurora, Steve Miller used to peer in the windows of the village fire station every day while walking to school.

“I always wanted to be a firefighter,” Miller said. “No one in my family ever had been, but I wanted to be one. I got lucky enough to do it.”

On Wednesday, Miller, 62, retired after 42 years of service with the North Aurora Fire Department. He had been the department’s fire chief for 23 years.

Miller said it was the right time for him to retire.

“It’s just time for some fresh thinking,” he said. “I want to get out while I’m healthy and spend time with my family. My family has really had to suffer from the demands of a public job. The fire service calls are 24/7. I just want to start spending more time with my family out of public life.”

Ryan Lambert took over the reins Thursday after getting the nod from the North Aurora Fire Board of Trustees.

Before being promoted, Lambert was the department’s fire marshal.

“I’m excited, but also humbled,” Lambert said. “I have big shoes to fill.”

Lambert, who was elected to the North Aurora Village Board in April 2011, said he will have to step down from the board. Being fire chief will take his full attention because, he said, “I need to focus on the job.”

“It is bittersweet,” Lambert said. “I’m going to a job I always loved, but I was passionate about being on the Village Board.”

less tax dollars.”

“There’s a lot of challenges he’s facing, but I’m sure he can handle those,” Miller said. “He’s inheriting my senior staff, and my senior staff is just the best.”

Miller started with the fire department in 1972 as a paidon-call firefighter.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 1976, captain in 1979 and assistant chief in 1987.

He became the department’s part-time chief in 1991 and full-time chief in 1993.

Miller was the department’s first full-time employee.

As the area has grown over the years, the department is having to respond to more calls.

“When I started, we were running 100 and some runs a year,” Miller said. “We’re do-

ing 2,000 a year now.”

He said he has seen many changes over the years, including in how fire departments are dispatched to emergencies. He said when he first arrived in 1972, there was no 911.

“We were wearing three-quarter boots and rubber coats,” Miller said. “To ride an ambulance, you needed a six-hour first aid class that was taught by the funeral home, and we were running in a Cadillac station wagon ambulance. There were also no smoke detectors. It has come a long way in the years I have been around.”

Miller noted that firefighters are better trained these days to handle all types of calls.

He said when he first started, “it was like, ‘You fol-

low this guy, and he’ll show you everything you need to know.’ ” “At that time, we were reacting to what just happened – smoke conditions changing or fire conditions changing,” Miller said. “Now, there’s fire science. You start recognize what is going to happen next.

So you are recognizing your conditions and environment better instead of reacting to them.”

Firefighters also have better equipment these days, he said.

Sugar Grove Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Warner, who also works parttime at the North Aurora Fire Department, credited Miller for teaching him how to be a firefighter.

“He started my career,” Warner said. “I learned my

basic fundamentals from there.”

Although Miller was the department’s fire chief for 23 years, he said he never sought out the position and added, “my happiest rank was captain, because I still got to fight fires.”

“I never came into this game wanting to be a fire chief, ever,” Miller said. “I just used to like riding the rigs.”

As a firefighter, Miller said he enjoyed the diversity of the job. He said every call was different.

“It’s not like any other job, where everything just happens the way it happens,” Miller said. “Everything is different.”

He credited the people around him for helping in his efforts to make the North Aurora fire department a strong department.

“I’ve been surrounded by great people, and I’ve had great residents to serve,” Miller said.

No charges yet in Rotolo ‘sexting’ incident

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia police have not yet determined whether charges will be filed against Rotolo Middle School students police said were involved in a “sexting” incident.

“We want to investigate it fully before we can make any decisions on how we will close it out,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said Friday.

Police continue to investigate a case of inappropriate nude images that police said were taken by Rotolo Middle School students of themselves and shared with other students.

Six or seven students sent photos of themselves through cellphone text messages, Bretz said. About 12 students have received the photos. Those boys and girls who are involved in the incident are between 11 and 14 years old, Bretz said.

“We’ve interviewed a total of 15 to 20 kids and parents who were directly or indirectly involved,” he said.

Bretz noted the Rotolo incident is not an isolated one. This week, two boys were charged with possession of child pornography following an investigation into alleged sexting at a Barrington middle school.

“People should sit down with their children and talk to them about that the decisions they make today could affect them tomorrow,” Bretz said.

“Most parents are already aware of sexting. They know it’s a problem.”

According to Rotolo’s handbook, students are prohibited from “creating, sending, sharing, viewing, receiving or possessing an indecent visual depiction of oneself or another person through the use of a computer, electronic communication device or cellular phone.”

Under state law, it is illegal for those younger than the age of 18 to distribute lewd photos using their cellphones or computers.

ELBURN – The Elburn Public Works Department and the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will begin the annual spring hydrant flushing during the week of May 12.

Hydrant flushing will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The crews will start on the north side of Elburn and work from the water towers outward and toward the south. “Hydrant Flushing” signs will be posted in the vicinity of the flushing area. Residents are reminded that the water is safe to use and consume during hydrant

flushing, but they may notice rust-colored water.

Public Works recommends limiting water use during hydrant flushing. If rust-colored water appears, wait until flushing has subsided, then run the cold water tap until it runs clear. The rust-colored water may stain laundry. If this happens, keep clothes wet and treat them with a stain remover.

ST. CHARLES – Teens wanting to learn about police and fire work are invited to register for the St. Charles Police Department’s second annual Youth Police Academy.

Open to ages 13 to 16, the youth academy will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the week of July 7.

The academy showcases careers in police and fire work, encourages teamwork and grows self-esteem.

Participants will learn about such topics as personal safety, self-defense, Internet safety, bullying, crime scene evidence collection and the steps to become a police officer and firefighter.

The academy also will spend a day at the Kane County Judicial Center for classes led by state’s attorneys.

Additionally, funding from the St. Charles Youth Commission will allow teens to get certified in CPR by the St. Charles Fire Department.

Registration is open to the first 25 applicants. Teens must be a St. Charles resident or a St. Charles School District 303 student. Preference will be given to applicants who live within the city limits.

St. Charles to celebrate city’s 180th birthday

The event begins at 7 p.m.

Monday in the City Council Chambers, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles. Mayor Ray Rogina will deliver some brief remarks, and cake and ice cream sundaes will be served courtesy of Blue Goose Market and Colonial Cafe and Ice Cream.

“It’s a great way to celebrate our rich heritage and our bright future,” City Administrator Mark Koenen said Friday.

Koenen said the last big celebration that he remembers in his 32 years at the city

was for the 150th anniversary. In 1984, the city had a multiple-day celebration that included a parade. Monday’s event will be a smaller-scale affair.

The city has invited past St. Charles mayors to join the celebration. On the way in, visitors will see the St. Charles Heritage Center’s historical exhibits in the display windows of the St. Charles Municipal Center. The exhibits include images of 19th century downtown St. Charles, Koenen said.

Let’s see ... what’s the best way to put this ...

I’ve got worms.

Now, before you recoil in horror, let me hasten to point out that I’ve had them before.

And, no doubt, you have, too.

Of course, the worms we’re talking about here are earthworms. We all have them in our lawns and gardens and, thanks to recent bouts of rain, on our driveways and sidewalks, too.

Although it has seemed like there’s not quite as many as in years past (which, you’ll soon see, isn’t such a bad thing) we’ve still managed to pick up enough worms in the past week to resurrect the Hickory Knolls Worm Farm, aka the crisper drawer in the appliance we call the “Animal Fridge.”

It’s true, fresh-picked earthworms make a wonderful addition to the diets of the Hickory Knolls education animals, particularly our turtles, salamanders and garter snake. They make great fish bait, too. And everyone knows how helpful worms are in the garden, enriching and aerating the soil the way they do.

But those same qualities that have made earthworms seem like such friends to animal keepers, fishermen and growers everywhere have caused the worms to become mortal enemies of our native woodlands.

Familiar as they are, virtually all earthworms we encounter here in northern Illinois are aliens – exotic species from Europe and Asia. Although nightcrawlers – those hefty worms mostly nocturnal in nature – were brought here specifically for use as fish bait, the remaining species we have all came as stowaways in pots, planters and other sources of soil from “the Old Country.”

Everyone’s got worms these days, thanks to our recent rainy weather. Long considered friends of gardeners and fishermen, these nonnative creatures are being studied to determine their impact on the ecology of eastern U.S. woodlands. are largely nonnative, these foreigners spell trouble for our local woodland ecosystems. Oaks, hickories and other native tree species, as well as many of our woodland wildflowers, require an environment where leaf litter and assorted natural debris break down slowly. This detritus, known as duff, in turn provides habitat for countless arthropods, fungi and other species that complete the complex matrix of a healthy food web.

When earthworms move in, they quickly consume the duff. Nutrients that would have been available disappear, and the soil, rather than becoming aerated and loose, instead becomes harder and more compact, and leads to a loss of species diversity.

In fact, scientists studying the health of woodland eco-

systems are now finding that the presence of earthworms seems to go hand-in-hand with other exotic invaders that form monocultures wherever they land: European buckthorn. Asian honeysuckle. Garlic mustard.

These associations, when you think about it, make total sense. The organisms co-existed together in Europe and Asia, so why not reunite here in the New Country too?

The problem is so severe that a monitoring program, the Great Lakes Worm Watch, has been organized to keep an eye on earthworms and slow their progress.

Founded by Cindy Hale, environmental education and ecology professor at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, the organization seeks to monitor the spread and measure the impacts of exotic

earthworms in our region.

Besides getting the word out about earthworms and their effects, the group also has developed an easy-to-use guide to earthworm anatomy, as well as a dichotomous key to help people identify some of the more common types of worms.

One of my favorite GLWW activities – and one you can try at home – is to conduct an earthworm survey. Roll over logs to see what species live underneath. Dig a hole and sift through the soil to see what sorts of worms you’ve unearthed. Count nightcrawler middens – that is, the piles of cast material, or poop – these large worms leave behind.

You can also create a mixture of water (4 liters, or about 1 gallon) and dry mustard powder (40 grams,

or about one-third cup) and pour it over a 1 foot-by-1 foot section of soil. The mustard will act as an irritant and drive worms up to the surface where you can count them with ease.

Because surveys aren’t much good if the findings go unreported, make sure you report your data to the folks at GLWW. Complete survey protocols can be found on their website.

Ellen was a wonderful person who found joy in all she did. She worked at the service desk at the local Jewel for 37 years and truly appreciated being able to help her customers. Ellen cherished spending time with her family, especially holiday celebrations, shopping, playing poker and watching sports.

She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

baby ducks that are born in the St. Charles North courtyard each year. After the baby ducklings had to be rescued from the drainage system in the courtyard one year, Rubieles built a protective fence around the area of the nest, Boynton said.

Rubieles started as a custodian at Thompson Middle School in 2004. Another honoree that started in a different building was Adkins, a speech language pathologist for 30 years across different districts. She came to Batavia School District 101 in 1993 and has spent the last eight years at Alice Gustafson.

As a pathologist, Adkins works collaboratively with

other teachers to identify students in need of speech and language services, determines the most effective treatments and approaches and monitors student progress, according to Jan Wright, Alice Gustafson school principal.

Wright and other District 101 employees stood up, clapped and cheered after Adkins’ name was called.

Adkins joked that receiving an award is a way to render a speech pathologist totally speechless.

“Thank you so much,” she said during her acceptance speech. “It’s just been the most rewarding career I could have ever chosen.”

The actual Kane County Educator of the Year Award went to Carol Mertes of Johnson Elementary School in East Aurora School District 131.

A committee at each nominee’s school building or school district puts together a large binder with letters and pictures detailing their work and accomplishments.

Kazmer’s binder included information on how she goes above and beyond as a special education teacher to make her students better readers, some of whom enter high school at an elementary-school reading level.

Kazmer’s binder also included praise from students and parents over her 25 years of teaching.

“We believe Ame Kazmer was instrumental in giving our son, David Massey, the chance to reach for and take hold of the career path that he had dreamed of,” Scott and Taffy Massey said in a letter.

The Masseys wrote about how Kazmer helped David Massey through a difficult senior year. Their son was accepted into what they called the top automotive school in the country and now he works in the automotive industry.

N. Aurora Tastee Freez reopens after remodeling

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – After being closed for a few months for remodeling, the Tastee Freez restaurant at 17 S. Lincolnway in North Aurora reopened recently for business.

“Business is picking up,” manager Muhammed Abdulghani said Friday. “The word is spreading. We’re hoping for warmer weather.”

He might get his wish. According to Accuweather, temperatures could hit 80 degrees Wednesday.

The restaurant reopened two weeks ago, Abdulghani said. The North Aurora location was built in 1967.

The reopened restaurant features an expanded food menu with a variety of items, including chicken wings, seafood, wraps and hot dogs,

along with sandwiches and burgers.

“Before, we were just selling cheeseburgers and hot dogs,” Abdulghani said. “People are happy with the new menu.”

The restaurant also sells a variety of treats, including ice cream, shakes, malts, smoothies and sundaes. Every week, the restaurant features a flavor of the week, he said.

Other improvements at the restaurant include a new parking lot, as well as a digital sign.

The Tastee Freez chain started in 1950 and is known for its ice cream, old-fashioned sundaes, strawberry shortcake and other items.

The North Aurora Tastee Freez is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Information is available by calling the restaurant at 630-892-0599.

After being closed for remodeling, the Tastee Freez restaurant at 17 S. Lincolnway in North Aurora reopened recently. Along with serving ice cream and other treats, the restaurant has expanded its food menu.

Dangers our children face If youths sometimes have difficulty understanding that their actions can have serious repercussions, a recent incident should have hit home.

On Wednesday, Batavia School District 101 Superintendent Lisa Hichens and Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz stood in front of reporters, photographers and TV cameras, addressing a case of sexting that had been reported, involving students from Rotolo Middle School in Batavia.

Later in the week, it was reported that a similar situation in Barrington led to middle school students there facing child pornography charges.

While there has been no indication that Rotolo students would face such charges, there could be criminal ramifications for what they reportedly did.

It can seem difficult for parents to drive home the dangers that exist.

Their children must understand the great responsibility they have when they use devices that allow them to share photos, videos and texts with many others.

Since youths might not comprehend how significant the results of their actions can be, parents have a level of responsibility to be involved, regardless of how much their kids push for privacy. In the wrong hands, such photos could lead to great danger. There are those who might do harm to youths, or the photos could be plastered across the Internet, tarnishing reputations.

Some school districts have offered opportunities for parents and students to learn more about the subject, and families should embrace that. It’s important to address how such incidents can be avoided and how they can be addressed if they do happen.

Parents cannot afford to wait until their children reach high school to deal with these potential dangers.

These are middle school students. If youths of any age have such devices, then they potentially have the ability to misuse them, whether intentionally or by being careless.

To the Editor: Following the directions of our local recycling contractor, Waste Management, for weeks I placed used batteries in a sandwich bag, something I have done for years. As directed, I placed this bag near the tote (actually on top of the closed lid) when I placed the tote at the curb for the usual Friday pickup.

It is my understanding that this separation is because of the toxicity of batteries and to facilitate their separation from the usual mix of metal, glass, paper and plastic.

It just happened that I was in the front room when the truck arrived, and – being curious about where those batteries would be stored when collected – I observed the driver as he came for the tote. Imagine my surprise when, and he picked up the bag of Editorial board Jim Ringness

batteries while grabbing the tote’s handle, he simply tossed that bag into the large hopper, the hopper into which the tote’s contents are dumped. I had expected the bag to be placed into a separate storage compartment, where the contents would not be mixed with other recyclable material, otherwise why did I bother to keep them separate?

A plastic sandwich bag will quite easily rip open in the harsh mechanical environment of the collection truck.

The truck will not travel far before all is dumped together. This revelation brings to mind several other questions.

At one time, when recycling was in its infancy, we were required to separate plastic, glass, metal and paper for collection. This soon changed to the all-together mix of all recyclable components. In its infancy, we also learned that many recyclable materials were

simply dumped in with the rest of the trash. Because the industry was not yet mature enough to manage the surge of materials to be recycled, it all went as before, into a landfill somewhere.

The early promises were simply the usual political ploy to convince us that something was being done when, in fact, only words were being done. My questions now are, where are these recyclable materials taken? Are they separated? Are they dumped into another landfill? Are we being, again, fooled by words in lieu of deeds? Is anyone watching this?

The separation of these materials has to be terribly labor-intensive. Is that cost too high to allow it to be done?

Are we being hoodwinked yet again, all in the name of political expedience?

It is your child, and several others, all in middle school.

How to handle it, that’s the next question. Well, try starting with taking away the toy.

They are lacking in morals, values and respect, for themselves and their parents, which all starts at home.

You can get everybody interested and have more people in attendance, that is, if you are a member of a parish.

A simple theory I would admit to just being a blue-collar working stiff, but the cost of living has just gotten way out of hand.

My theory may be too simple, but I believe that it’s time for credit cards, house loans, car loans and even assistance from the government for insurance and food stamps and everything that comes into that category – it needs to start being qualified by the money that you actually bring home, your net income, not your gross income.

My phone battery was dying and, in a sense, a part of me is dying. It is time to face reality – we have entered a twilight zone.

Machines and automated phone voices are now controlling humans. Computers and automated voices rule and control us.

Views vary on horses’ treatment Accusations of theft and animal abuse between organizations

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE – In the wake of the animal cruelty case involving a petting zoo in Hampshire, a nonprofit horse rescue organization believes another farm, also in Hampshire, is neglecting animals.

Stardust Sanctuary, an Elgin-based horse rescue group, began offering its services to the Northern Illinois Equine Training Center in October after it noticed approximately 150 horses standing in more than three feet of mud. Some horses had the appearance of untreated skin conditions, poor living conditions and untrimmed hooves, which can be extremely painful to the animals, the group claimed.

Stardust co-founders Laurette Kay and Leslie SanFilippo entered into a verbal agreement with farm owner Karen Bingham, who rents the property at 48W216 Immelman Lane, to provide adequate care for the horses, provide improvements to the farm and help her trim her herd.

But in March, after months of adding numerous improvements to the farm, including purchasing shelters, providing on-site veterinary care and hoof trimming, Bingham accused Stardust of stealing two of her horses after they brought the animals to an off-site veterinarian, which Kay said Bingham agreed to. Bingham called the Kane County Sheriff and barred the organization from returning to the farm.

“I feel that we all went in with goodwill,” Kay said. “We went in with compassion for the woman and the horses … Every single animal was in need of care. Their feet were not done. They were not de-wormed. They were not even on pain meds. The horses hide their pain. They suffer in silence.”

But according to Bingham, along with reports by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the farm is in good standing and is not neglecting any of the horses.

“I’ve had Kane County Animal Control people come in,” Bingham said. “I’ve had the OK from the Illinois Department of Agriculture … The truth needs to come out.”

According to the report from the sheriff’s office, an officer drove to the farm unannounced after multiple calls from Stardust and found “no visible signs of injury on any of the horses and no signs of abuse or neglect.” The report also said Kane County Animal Control Director Robert Sauceda performed an independent inspection and found no sings of abuse or neglect.

But Stardust, which with the from donors has spent roughly $45,000 rehabbing the farm and providing care to the horses, said the abuse is evident to those with a trained eye. They hired two independent veterinarians to evaluate the health of the horses, who both came away concerned by the quality of care.

“A whole lot of the horses were underweight,” said John Hanover, a vet at the Animal Hospital of Gurnee. “They had inappropriate foot care. Their feet were way too long, causing pain and limb problems. … Horses were trembling in pain.”

Those athletes who weren’t Blackhawks hardly viewed the chilly night as a competition for second place.

While that battle still proved pretty riveting – host Kaneland edged St. Charles East, 92-91, behind West Aurora’s team score of 137 – the real onus rests on the season’s stretch run.

Sectionals come in two weeks. A week after that brings the three-class IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.

Kaneland senior Lauren Zick sensed the urgency and seized it, winning the 100 meters in 12.81 seconds and the 200 in 25.95.

“It definitely means a lot, especially because it’s my senior night, too. The last time I get to run here at Peterson Field,” Zick said. “It’s definitely a lot more special than it would normally be, so I’m really, really happy, and I’m really proud of myself that I pushed through this season and definitely have been running with better times than I have all four years.”

A St. John’s softball recruit, Zick also placed second in the long jump to friend and Kane County XPlosion teammate Emma Spagnola of West Aurora. Zick ran with the Knights’ runner-up 4x100 relay, as well.

For East, conquering a game of musical relays added up to a solid finish.

Coach Tim Wolf said 26 athletes missed practice time this week because of illness, a struggle compounded on a spate of recent injuries.

Shead (2:22.58) placed third, about six seconds behind teammate Torree Scull, whose emergence in the 800 on top of her distance reputation gives Wolf some options.

“The possibilities are endless for us,” Wolf said. “We’ve got to get everybody healthy, get the sicknesses over with, the injuries.”

Kaneland hosted its second meet of at least 16 teams in six days. The boys program won Saturday’s Peterson Prep Invitational handily, and also will host the Northern Illinois Big 12 meet later this month.

On Friday, the girls were hardly pushovers, as coach Doug Ecker’s group worked through some absences of their own.

“It’s definitely awesome that the girls who don’t normally run in our normal relays, they’ve stepped up and done their part, too,” Zick said.

The Saints won each relay but the 4x800 – that belonged to Batavia – and still see things trending upward. Three returners from last season’s 3A champion 4x400 – Allison Chmelik, Elizabeth Chmelik and Jordan Shead – joined freshman fill-in Kathleen Strohaker to close the meet with a winning time of 4:00.41.

“We finished strong with the 4x4, so ended on a good note,” said Shead, a Notre-Dame bound senior.

“We’ll work out all the little bugs and stuff and be good to go.”

Rosary fielded less than a full team, as Friday also was the school’s prom.

Referring to the Royals’ singlets, coach Vic Mead smiled and said, “I tried to tell the girls that this was your prom dress.”

No such luck.

At night’s end, the Blackhawks mugged for photos as

As a sophomore, Howlett was a dynamo on offense, batting .510 while driving in 39 runs en route to an offseason college commitment to Northern Illinois.

Knowing how punishing she can be on opposing pitchers, Howlett hasn’t been entirely satisfied with the first half of her junior season. A few more days like Friday might change that outlook for Howlett, who drove in three of North’s runs in a 6-0, Upstate Eight Conference River Division win over Batavia.

“I’ve been struggling a little this season but I’m getting more back to driving the ball to the left side,” Howlett said.

“And I’ve been doing that my whole softball career.”

The left-handed hitting first baseman went the other way with authority with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, slashing a shot the wall for a long single that scored two runs. She added

an RBI groundout as North scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to claim the win.

Howlett, who moved from fifth in the order last season to cleanup this year, said she’s feeling more confident offensively in recent games.

“Just a nice hitting lesson with my hitting coach [Bill Morrow],” Howlett said.

“Making sure that I’m not dropping my elbow and rolling over.”

North coach Tom Poulin said Howlett is acclimating to being more of a focal point for opponents this spring.

“I think people are being a lot more careful with her for multiple reasons,” Poulin said. “What she did last year, and even if you haven’t even scouted us, you’re not going to give the [No.] 4 hitter anything to hit until you have to. I think she was probably swinging at some balls out of the zone early in the year. But we don’t worry about Abby. She’s one of the ones we’re not too worried about.”

Another of those girls is Northwestern-bound senior Sabrina Rabin, who handcuffed a Tri-Cities rival for the

second time this week.

After throwing a three-hitter in North’s 5-1 win Tuesday against St. Charles East, Rabin tossed a two-hitter against Batavia (6-12, 4-8 UEC River), notching a shutout this time.

Rabin (8-5) is pitching some of her best ball of the season.

“She’s pitched well all year – I think we haven’t helped her out at crucial times,” Poulin said. “We’ve played well defensively but then at crucial times, with two outs and runners in scoring position, we might kick one or throw it away. She’s been kind of a hard-luck loser in a lot of her losses but she just stays positive and continues to believe in everybody. … She’s as good as it gets in my book as far as a teammate goes and as far as a player.”

Rabin found trouble in the top of the fourth as an infield single by Toni Galas, a hit batter and a walk loaded the bags for Batavia with one out. But Rabin fanned Jorie Nichol and Tara Zufan to preserve a 1-0 lead for North (13-6, 9-2 UEC River).

tellanos thought his batters were overly anxious.

“I think in that situation you’ve got to put the pressure on them because really when you get the bases loaded like that, the pressure’s on the defense,” Castellanos said. “I think we try to do too much, try to overswing sometimes and think we’ve got to hit a home run, and then we end up with not having such a good at-bat. At that point, we’ve just got to try to put the ball in play and put the pressure on the defense and make them make the play.”

Alex Millett, Erin Nemetz, Jordyn Wolfe and Mick ey Goetz had two hits each for North against Bulldogs off-speed specialist Alyssa Klemm.

Castellanos said he found out earlier Friday that Batavia’s No. 1 pitcher, Rachael Lovestrand, would be unavailable for the game as she was to be evaluated for a possible concussion.

Klemm and Nicole Peercy figure to be busy in the circle for the Bulldogs today as they participate in a multigame tournament in Marengo.

St. Charles East blasts Geneva to open series

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East baseball team profited from Geneva’s numerous mistakes Friday, taking the series opener between the Upstate Eight Conference River rivals, 10-0, in five innings.

The Vikings started the game with leadoff hitter Jason Croci making it to second on a St. Charles East throwing error.

After an infield single by Garrett Davis, there were two runners on and no outs, but Saints starting pitcher Austin Regelbrugge worked out of the jam, and rolled from there.

Regelbrugge pitched all five innings, giving up three hits and striking out four batters, three of them looking.

“I was just trying to get ahead [of hitters], fastball, curveball, trying to mix it up and

keep them off balance,” Regelbrugge said. “I trust my defense that they’re going to make plays.

They’re not going to make two mistakes in a row.”

The Saints (13-7, 9-5 UEC River) scored two runs in the bottom of the inning with Brannon Barry hitting into a fielder’s choice and Regelbrugge helping his own cause with an RBI single up the middle.

Geneva starter Mitchel Merges struggled to find the strike zone, which set in motion the Vikings’ collapse in the third inning.

The bottom of the third began with a single by East first baseman Ben Smith. Jake Asquini bunted and reached safely on a throwing error by the pitcher. The bases were then loaded after a walk to left fielder Erik Anderson and a run came in off another walk, making the score 3-0.

The Vikings brought in Ben Slattery and his first pitch was turned into a textbook squeeze play by Mike Settle, giving East a 4-0 with lead no outs. Saints leadoff hitter Reid Olson singled in a run and a throwing error brought in two more.

Barry added an RBI double to left, making the score 8-0. Smith came to bat for a second time in the inning and hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right. The nightmare inning finally ended for Geneva but the Saints held a 9-0 lead.

“It seemed like you name it, it went wrong,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “We have to come out with a different demeanor then we came out today, and I think you will see that [in today’s doubleheader].”

Geneva (12-6, 8-5 UEC River) had four errors in the game, all leading to runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barry struck again with an RBI

single to end the game. He went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a double.

“Everyone had great, quality at-bats which is good, everyone saw a lot of pitches,” Barry said. “… Luckily we were all on our spots and were all hitting the ball hard.”

Geneva will host the Saints in today’s doubleheader. East coach Len Asquini realizes the importance of Friday’s series-opening win. “[This win was] big, no question about it,” Asquini said. “ …

We know tomorrow is another day, we know Geneva is going to show up and be a lot better and we’re going to have to be just as good if not better tomorrow.”

Friday’s game was a makeup of Thursday’s rainout. Game 1 of today’s doubleheader at Geneva starts at 9 a.m. as both schools have their proms this weekend.

Payne transferring to Dartmouth: Another St. Charles North hoops product – Quinten Payne – will transfer to Dartmouth from Ball State, he decided Friday.

Payne announced in March that he was leaving Ball State after his freshman season.

The shooting guard chose Dartmouth – of the Ivy League – after also considering Appalachian State. Payne said he’s always been a good student and is eager for a “life-changing opportunity” to attend an Ivy League school. He plans to study finance.

“It’s not really intimidating at all,” Payne said of Dartmouth’s academics. “I think it’s something to really strive for and embrace. ... It’s something to really motivate me and excite me and really strive to be the best I can possibly be.”

Payne, the Chronicle’s Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the 2012-13 season, originally committed to Loyola but changed his mind when his brother, Cully Payne, left the Ramblers’ program. Quinten’s sister, Katlyn Payne, recently opted to transfer to the Northern Illinois women’s basketball program from Eastern Illinois.

Bulldogs’ Knox picks Rochester: Batavia senior forward Tucker Knox recently decided he will play college basketball at the University of Rochester (N.Y.).

Knox, a three-sport athlete at Batavia, could also end up punting for the Rochester football team, according to his mother, Kellie Knox. Knox chose Rochester, a Division-III program, mostly for its academic prowess.

The Yellowjackets compete in the University Athletic Association, which also includes the University of Chicago.

Checking on their twin children in college will be highly convenient for Allan and Liz Goetz.

After St. Charles North softball senior Mickey Goetz committed to Olivet Nazarene last summer, North boys basketball standout Alec Goetz signed to play for Olivet Nazarene on Thursday after accepting the Tigers’ scholarship offer last week.

Goetz is tight with his twin sister, and her earlier commitment to the Bourbonnais school was influential.

“It was a pretty big factor,” he said. “I had no idea anything about Olivet until they started recruiting my sister because they started recruiting her before they started recruiting me.”

Goetz, a combo guard with a smooth, long-range shooting stroke, was a First-Team Chronicle All-Area selection as a senior. He averaged 16.6 points a game for the North Stars and made waves with a 36-point explosion in a triple-overtime loss to powerhouse Simeon at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

Goetz said his performance against Simeon expanded his recruitment, with Division-I programs Bradley, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Chicago State showing varying degrees of interest. Roosevelt University in Chicago was another option.

But Goetz said Olivet Nazarene “was sold on me from the beginning” and seemed most sincere in its pursuit. He also was impressed by longtime Tigers coach Ralph Hodge, who has guided the program to 18 regular season and conference tournament titles in his 35 years on the job.

While the need to bulk up is a given for just about any high school athlete transitioning to college, it’s especially crucial for Goetz. Goetz thrived in high school despite a slender build; the 6-foot guard said he was down to about 133 pounds midway through his senior season.

His metabolism makes adding weight – and keeping it on – tricky.

“Oh my gosh, yeah, I feel like I work so hard to put on weight, then I’ll have a week of practice and lose like six pounds,” Goetz said. “It’s crazy. I’ve been trying to put on weight since my soph-

Former Waubonsee College men’s and women’s basketball assistant Jim Sury of St. Charles is taking the reins of the women’s program, and he’s eager to make an impression. Sury steps in for Dana Wagner, a Kaneland product who stepped down at the end of the 2013-14 season but will remain at the school as an assistant athletic manager. A 1970 Marmion graduate and Navy veteran, Sury spent four years working with troubled youth through Chicago’s Christopher House. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Sury explores his basketball and professional background with Kane Couny Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. Here’s an edited transcript:

What was the dialogue after Dana stepped down? Was it pretty logical you’d take over?

Yeah, I mean, they opened the job up, which I’m sure they had to do. But, you know, I think there were a lot of people pulling for me to get the job. When I went through

the interview process, things went really well, and I guess there were several other candidates, but they decided to go with me.

Tell me about your style and approach to basketball.

Get the ball and go. I like to pick up at baseline and stay with them all the way. … It’s kind of like getting back to John Thompson from Georgetown, going from baseline to baseline and just going at it. … A lot of emphasis on defense.

Has defense-first always been your M.O.?

You know, everybody knows me more as being an offensive player when I played at Marmion. I was taught defense, I had excellent teachers in defense, and I think it’s real important. I think you can teach anybody to play offense. I don’t think you can teach defense. It’s an attitude, and you either have it or you don’t. So I know when I go in to recruit, I just look for kids who seem to

Weekend Chit-chat with WCC WOMEN’S HOOPS COACH JIM SURY want to play defense, and so far, it seems to be working out pretty good. Kids that I’ve been able to recruit are good defensive ballplayers, and I just hope to continue to recruit that way.

What was Dana’s approach?

You know, I think Dana was more offense. I think she left a lot of the defense to me, though, you know, I thought we worked really well together. And I’m definitely going to miss that. After last year, we just seemed to really sync our minds more and more together, and there were a lot of times we would just look at

each other and literally say the same thing. So I think our coaching styles rubbed off on each other, and we were able to complement each other, and I really liked it. And I know I’m going to really, really miss that.

You have an interesting background between the Navy and the work you’ve done with kids on the street. How much of that ever enters into basketball?

Yeah, you know I’ve always worked with kids. I believe in tough love. I believe also in giving second chances.

I believe in giving the kids the power to choose what they want to do, and letting them know what the consequences of those things are. And I know coaching with [Waubonsee men’s coach Dave Heiss], he gets a lot of kids from the Chicago area, where, you know, you have to take a different approach with those kids. And working in the city, I was able to do that, and it certainly helped in being able to reach out and be able to connect with kids.

Are you still on the Marmion alumni board?

Yeah, but I think I’m going to step down. Just time constraints right now, and I’ve been on the board now, for oh, I want to say close to 18 years. And I was past president, so it’s a very demanding position, and I just don’t have the time or the energy at this point. I’m also trying to run my own business [as a painting contractor], and it keeps me going.

Is the painting pretty flexible during the basketball season?

Yeah. That’s why I’m able to really coach. We have practice from 1 to 3 [p.m.], and it just provides me with the flexibility to do both, and it’s something that I really like.

And it just keeps me going.

I just like the challenge. I like working with the kids. I especially like working with the ladies. And I just hope I can do it for a whole bunch more years. … I encourage people to come out and watch us. We’re going to have an exciting brand of basketball.

The Eagles (8-7) scratched their run across on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Both teams had three hits, with sophomore Drew Wagner going 2 for 3 and scoring the game’s lone run for the Eagles.

Cody Worst had the other hit for Aurora Christian, which went errorless in the field.

The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the first before their bats were silenced by Burlington pitchers for the next nine-plus innings. In the 11th, Hankins hit a lineshot double to center that one-hopped the wall. After Daniel Lockhart was intentionally walked, David Bote’s slow roller was thrown away

by Burlington third baseman Angel Rosa, allowing Hankins to come around to score.

The Burlington error made a winner out of Tyler Bremer, who improved to 3-0 on the year after tossing two shutout innings. Bremer worked out of trouble in the both innings, striking out Mike Fish with runners on first and second

Underwood allowed a leadoff double to Kody Eaves before walking Chad Hinshaw to end the right-hander’s night. Reliever Justin Amlung cleaned up Underwood’s mess, getting a double play and a ground-out to end the inning.

Amlung worked out of trouble again in the eighth, striking out Fish before Remillard gunned down Eaves at third trying to steal to end the inning.

In the ninth, Amlung induced Mendoza to roll into another inning-ending 6-43 double play that erased a leadoff single.

After the first, the Cougars only managed to get two runners in scoring position until Jacob Rogers led off the ninth with a walk and eventually ended up on third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

Lockhart walked and stole second but Bote grounded out to leave the winning run at third.

Randazzo at home as scorer, too Wayne Randazzo strives to put a stamp on each of his baseball broadcasts.

Those multicolored markers by his side are simply a coincidence.

Actually, Randazzo’s red-for-strikeouts, pink-forwalks approach has come in special handy lately as he adds the role of official scorer at Cougars home games to his duties as the club’s radio play-by-play man for AM-1280 WBIG. “I’m sitting there watching each play pretty candidly, anyway,” Randazzo said. “We don’t really have replay capability, so we just go with our gut instinct at the time.”

A St. Charles East graduate in his third season with the Cougars, Randazzo always has kept score throughout his broadcasting career, which included time with the Double-A Mobile (Ala.) Bay Bears before he acted on the chance to return home for the 2012 season.

Cougars media placement coordinator Bill Baker asked Randazzo to score a few games near the end of 2012, then bequeathed the duty fulltime in 2013.

Juggling his other duties, including calling the New York offices of Major and Minor League Baseball Advanced Media after every half-inning with the game’s play by play, grew increasingly difficult for Baker, who had scored games since 2002.

If one inning featured a particularly perplexing sequence, that could compromise Baker’s attention when

the other team came to bat.

Baker happily offers consultation if Randazzo needs it, but attests that things grow more comfortable with every batter, inning and game.

“A wild pitch is a wild pitch. A ground ball that the third baseman just butchers is a ground ball that he just butchers. He knows it’s an error and I know it’s an error,” said Baker, also the radio voice of Northern Illinois football and men’s basketball since 1980.

“There are a few times every so often when I look at [Randazzo] and he looks at me. That stare on his face as if to say, ‘What are you going to call that one?’ ” Randazzo learned quickly that discretion varies depending on the level of baseball.

“It’s not Starlin Castro trying to make that play,” he said, “it’s an A-ball shortstop.”

Baker describes as rare the cases when he has had to answer to a manager disputing

a given ruling upon receiving the box score after the game.

When that happened, he reverted to his memory bank and the specifics of what prompted him to write either “1B” or “E.” “What I think is a hit might not be a hit to someone else,” Baker said, “but that’s the human element.”

Randazzo is not traveling with the Cougars this season as other broadcast opportunities grow. He also is working with AM-670, AM-720 and the Big Ten Network, among other outlets.

While keeping score adds another responsibility to his plate, he knows he’s sharp enough to be prepared.

Errors are purple, singles are green and the difference is in the eye of the beholder.

The head instructors for the camp, Waubonsee’s Dave Randall and Naperville North’s Mark Lindo, will teach the fundamentals and techniques of hitting with the emphasis on the basic mechanics necessary to excel at baseball and softball. Station work, group drills and individualized instruction are used to teach each player those skills. The cost is $70 for each participant and $50 for each additional family member.

It clearly didn’t work for Mike Holmgren in Seattle or Mike Shanahan in Washington, a couple of really good coaches.

But Parcells made it work after he left the Giants, including the only small successful window Jerry Jones has had in Dallas since he Phil Emery chased Jimmy Johnson out of town, and Bill Belichick seems to make it work in New England.

This, of course was Marc Trestman a constant storyline when Jerry Angelo and Smith were together here.

Early on, Angelo was clearly in charge of the roster and there were some success stories in the draft we tend to forget like Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs, Ian Scott, Tommy Harris, Bernard Berrian, Nathan Vashar, Kyle Orton and Devin Hester.

It is widely perceived, however, that after the Bears’ 2006 Super Bowl loss and Smith’s subsequent contract extension, Lovie also was allowed to flex his muscles quite a bit more with personnel decisions and the bottom began to fall out.

That next draft started with Greg Olsen but then went, in order: Dan Bazuin, Garrett Wolfe and Michael Okwo to be followed in subsequent years with No. 1s such as Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi and other high picks such as Jarron Gilbert, Juaquin Iglesias, Major Wright and Chris Conte. Angelo began billing himself as the great facilitator, watching Lovie add free agent blunders like Adam Archuletta and Orlando Pace that eventually cost both men their jobs.

That is really the ultimate irony of Lovie’s situation today, but it’s a Buccaneer issue now.

What kind of talent evaluator is Trestman? We don’t really know.

We’re starting to suspect he’s a very good offensive coach, and he was prescient enough to see he could start Kyle Long and Jordan Mills from Day 1 as rookies.

Of course, he was also forced to start rookies Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene, and we know what a disaster that was.

It seems clear the draft is Emery’s show for the moment and Trestman is along for the ride, but just how good of an eye for talent the head coach has, and how much Emery is willing to listen to him, is going to go a long way in determining how successful this current Bears regime is, and how long they keep their jobs.

Please remind me to ask the question the next chance I get.

I am really mad at myself right now. When the rest of the Bears media and I met with general manager Phil Emery on Thursday, I didn’t ask the most important question of all, and nobody else came up with it either.

Who exactly wears the pants in the Bears’ draft war room these days?

OK, unless Terry Boers is suddenly working on the draft for the Bears, I assume everyone in the room has pants on, but do you get where I’m heading here?

I don’t ever remember hearing a line of questioning as to exactly what the relationship is between Emery and coach Marc Trestman when it comes to the draft and player procurement?

Emery did talk about assigning reports to his coaches and getting their help in evaluating players.

But when the club is on the clock and the decision has to be made who they are going to take, how much if any input does Trestman have?

I’m under the impression that Emery picks talent and Trestman coaches football.

But in every GM/head coach relationship, there are blurred lines when it comes to just how much input the head coach has in picking players.

Who can forget the famous quote by Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells: “If I’m going to be asked to cook the meal, I’d like to be able to pick the groceries.”

Just how much does Trestman enjoy shopping?

Teach, model self-acceptance Batavia middle-school ‘sexting’ situation sparks dialogue between kids, parents It has been reported that several Batavia middle-schoolers photographed nude “selfies” (allegedly not while on school property) and recently shared them with other kids via text and other electronic applications, like SnapChat.

And now they, and their parents, are finding themselves in a world of pain.

Oy vey.

Batavia police have been investigating the “sexting” situation since Tuesday, when a student reportedly notified a school staff member about the nature of the images being shared. In many cases, sexting, the practice of creating and disseminating images of nude or semi-nude subjects via electronic media, including cellphones, is prohibited by Illinois law when the subject is a minor (under 18 years of age), even if the subject is oneself. Receiving and not immediately deleting said images from cellphones or other devices can constitute being in possession of child pornography, as well. That’s an eye-opener for many parents, I’m sure. Could some Batavia kids be charged?

“Right now, there are no charges pending,” said Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz when I interviewed him by phone Thursday afternoon.

“Educating kids and parents comes first and foremost,” he added, and I agree. Current laws predate the advent of many social media applications, which have made creating and sharing such images far too easy. Fortunately, some states are pushing for decriminalization of minors who share such images with their peers – as long as it’s a first offense – in favor of counseling and supervision.

But charges are currently pending in Barrington, against two middle-school boys who allegedly shared or possessed explicit photos and video. A quick Web search reveals that communities in several other states – Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana, for example – are also currently wrestling with similar concerns.

The talk among some parents in Batavia is that their children report that

“That’s part of an open investigation, so I won’t comment on it at this point,” Bretz stated when I asked about it.

I’m sad. I’m sad that anyone, especially children, would feel they must degrade themselves in order to gain others’ approval and feel they belong, but I’m not surprised. After all, unwittingly or otherwise, we’ve all had a hand in creating and supporting a hyper-sexualized culture. Our children are suffering the consequences and it’s time to do something about it, but first we need to help them manage rapidly evolving technology.

My kids’ devices live in my bedroom overnight (when inhibitions tend to nose-dive) so my kids won’t be tempted to lose sleep, and computers stay in common areas of our home (where I can supervise). I know their passwords to any email and social media accounts, and device histories are routinely and randomly checked. Limits are also set on the kinds of content allowed.

Software is now widely available that enables parents to easily monitor their kids’ devices, and some, I’m told, will even send to the parent any photo the child takes before it sees the light of day. Yes, it’s far simpler to take these measures if protocols are established up front when devices first come home, but hey, we’re the parents.

We’re allowed to create and edit rules as needed. Yes, this means that kids’ privacy is limited, and that’s uncomfortable, but I’m a no-drama mama. A gentle but firm explanation of expectations and boundaries, coupled with repeated discussions about why they’re uber important (including the

far-reaching, often permanent record of electronic transmissions and other consequences, both legal and emotional), seems pretty effective. The thing is, parenting matters. Like it or not, the frontal lobes of our brains, where reasoning and judgment reside, do not fully mature until our mid-20s. A perfect storm exists, then, when we toss young people together with a whole lotta sophisticated technology and forget to stir in the key ingredient – active parenting – early and often.

Talk to your kids. Why do they think someone would be willing to exploit themselves in exchange for acceptance?

“Do you really want to belong to that group? Does that person really sound like a good friend? What makes a good friend, anyhow?” We’ve all seen the headlines about kids who have killed themselves over pictures like this.

That’s terrifying, to be sure, but this whole thing reminds me of something a mentor taught me when I was a young counselor – that the Chinese symbol for the word “crisis” is actually comprised of two characters. One represents “danger” and the other – when used in certain situations – “opportunity.”

What we have here is a perfect opportunity.

If we do nothing, or if we merely turn our backs and smugly judge those involved, we simply perpetuate this mushrooming problem. Instead, we can have these candid conversations with our children and most important, teach and model self-acceptance. And then we can decide to stop tolerating a mindless consumption of our hyper-sexualized culture. We can watch television with them, for example, and have discussions about what they’re seeing. We can notice, and help our kids notice, the subtle and not so subtle ways some programming really “programs” us to accept this stuff as normal and even “OK.” It’s not.

I am not proposing a ban on certain programming (have you actually watched the Disney Channel recently?), but simply urging parents to teach their

children how to critically and thoughtfully engage their world. For example, I get certain Chicago media updates in my Facebook newsfeed. Know what I found Thursday afternoon when I took a break from editing this column?

“Move over Mila... the “Sexiest Woman in the World” is --->” Is it any wonder that we’re wrestling with this stuff? I will “unlike” this media outlet if postings like this continue. But that’s not all. I told them so, too, and will tell others like them (who, ironically, keep ratings up and advertising dollars flowing by reporting scandals such as the one that now plagues Batavia), that I’m done turning a blind eye to this kind of content.

Enough is enough.

Here’s how I commented on the media outlet’s Facebook page: “This is not news. And it’s damaging. You are feeding and promoting the very culture, a hypersexualized culture, that inspires kids to engage in damaging sexting, about which you then get to report.

(My daughter is a seventh-grader at the school in Batavia where you were camped-out yesterday.) ... There are other ways to attract ratings and advertising revenue, but not without viewers. I will ‘unlike’ you and any other organization which continues these practices, and my family will stop consuming your television content.”

You got it. If this news outlet and others like it cannot be inspired to do the right thing just because it’s good for our children, then I’ll appeal to their baser instincts and threaten their bottom lines by patronizing media that will. I’m taking this seriously. Who’s with me?

I hope the kids implicated in this sexting thing remember, and are reminded, that they are not their mistakes. I hope their parents remember this, too. And then I hope we will all do what needs to be done so this opportunity isn’t wasted.

t’s just so tempting. You stroll through any greenhouse or big box retailer and there are flats of veggies and flowers calling your name.

Instant color! Instant garden! Yet, tucked in the corner on a wire rack are rows of seed packets, with only their glossy covers to give you a sense of what may come.

••• Somewhere in higher profit margins of ready-to-go plants, the art of putting seeds in the ground is waning. These lowly seed packets should not be cast aside, but rather embraced, as seed packets can offer the buyer a great bargain (50 plants for $1.99).

From a gardening standpoint, direct sowing seeds into the earth or containers also offers the gardener a wide variety of plant choices, and eliminates transplant shock; the plants grow right where you want them.

In fact, plants like melons, cucumbers and squashes so dislike being transplanted, that most publications encourage direct sowing.

While many of the popular bedding plants do need to be put in as transplants, others are fast growing, such as zinnias, poppies, cosmos, and marigolds and can be successfully planted from seed outdoors.

Read the seed packet carefully to find which plants need to be started indoors and which can be direct sown.

Seeds have a funny way of being tough and delicate at the same time. For best results, plant – according to directions – in rows, holes, or by pushing them into the ground. Make sure the covering soil is fine and loose. A hard, crusted soil will inhibit

LEARNING TO GROW Jim Stendler growth. Water the newly planted seeds gently, with a fine spray, as not to wash the seeds away. You may have to protect the bed from hungry birds or curious chipmunks.

Once you think they are never going to come up, they start poking through. If needed, thin according to directions on the packet, or by the spacing rules outlined on the University of Illinois Extension website.

Thinning is critical to the success of plants, too much crowding and everything suffers.

For the faint of heart, take several passes at thinning. First, pluck or snip the plants right next to each other, then – next time – take out the weak ones in between, then to their final spacing.

Soon you will discover the joy of seeing what started as simple seeds becoming a full garden of vegetables and flowers.

In the second couple (S/O), the self-oriented person is quite contented. Their needs are met, so what more could they want?

They often wonder why their partner is so dissatisfied. The energy in this relationship is flowing in only one direction and the other-oriented partner, although they like to give, can only give for so long. They have needs too. It doesn’t take long until “O” becomes sad, unfulfilled, and deplete of energy. As this relationship ages, it grows further apart, although only one is aware that it has.

The third example (O/O), is the quintessential “match made in heaven.” This couple is acutely aware of the other’s needs and strives to make their partner fulfilled. Both are eager to please. Both are trusting and trustworthy. The energy in this scenario flows in both directions. As this relationship ages, the flow of energy creates more love and the two grow closer.

I don’t think anyone enters into a serious relationship thinking that it will end. For most people, long lasting satisfying relationships are essential to their happiness. When children are a part of these families, it becomes even more important that the relationship is positive, healthy and sustainable.

Awareness is the first step to making any changes in your life. If you feel that your relationship could use improvement, try having a discussion about self/other with your loved one, or seek help from a counselor. In most cases, the problems that you are experiencing can be explained with a little knowledge of personality traits.

A lot of what I do in my column is identifying personality traits and how they complement and sometimes conflict with the traits of others. It’s the mix of personalities that sets the tone of our relationships.

Because of this, it’s vitally important to have a solid understanding of who you are, how you affect the people in your life and how others affect you.

One major trait that often determines the success of a relationship is whether a person is self-oriented or other-oriented. Keep in mind that all personality descriptors fall somewhere on a continuum.

The more extreme these traits are, the more likely a person will experience difficulties in their relationships. Since opposites often attract, we will concentrate on the extreme individuals.

Self-oriented people see the world as how it affects them.

Their focus is turned inward.

They indulge themselves, satisfying whatever needs they have and justifying their actions to fulfill themselves. They lack empathy and are easily irritated or dissatisfied when others don’t meet up to their expectations. They don’t trust others, because they never take the time to really get to know them. In turn, people tend not to trust the self-oriented type.

Other-oriented people see the world as how they can affect it. Their focus is turned outward. They look for ways to indulge others, sometimes at the expense of their own needs.

They feel empathy and derive great satisfaction from helping others. They trust more easily and are seen as trustworthy by others.

Lets look at these traits in three different couples. The first couple consists of two self-oriented people (S/S); the second couple, a self-oriented/ other-oriented combination (S/O); and the third couple, two other-oriented (O/O).

In the first scenario (S/S), both individuals vie for all the attention, frequently irritate each other, and generally live like roommates. There is little energy in this relationship. As this relationship ages, it grows further apart, eventually leading to loneliness, unmet needs, dissatisfaction, and often, an

‘Friended to Death’: A narcissist worth watching

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post The premise of “Friended to Death” is clever. A callow young man, obsessed with posting snarky observations on Facebook and Twitter, decides to fake his own death in order to monitor the reaction of his 400-plus friends and followers on social media.

The satire of contemporary manners and mores, while too blunt to draw blood, is sharp enough to sting, particularly for those of us who may recognize a piece of ourselves, or someone we know, in the mirror it holds up to society.

It’s an assured debut for first-time filmmaker Sarah Smick, who wrote the comedy with her husband, actor-producer Ian Michaels. Both have supporting roles in the film.

But the movie works chiefly because of Ryan Hansen (“Veronica Mars”), who plays the genial jerk Michael Harris, a parking-enforcement officer who hits upon the aforementioned social experiment after he loses his job and his childhood best friend (Zach McGowen), both as the result of interactions with the same man (Michaels).

These shots across the bow of our hero’s overweening self-absorption are enough to make him question the meaning of his very existence.

Hansen plays the part of Michael – a handsomer, more obnoxious version of Napoleon Dynamite, who speaks in a funny patois of text shorthand and eye-rolling insults – with a kind of insecure brio.

Other nicely defined characters (or, rather, caricatures) include Emile (James Immekus), a nerdy former co-worker of Michael’s who abets him in his fraud by posting the news of Michael’s suicide on Facebook.

Their real-world relationship, which evolves over the course of the film from exploitation to genuine affection, is the film’s most satisfying pleasure.

“Friended to Death” is a solid and slick-looking production, despite an indie aesthetic that places its aspirations well outside the mainstream.

One running gag involves a character who repeatedly refers to another character with a stream of increasingly ludicrous variations on the word “bro.” “Bro DiMaggio” and “Bro-seph Gordon-Levitt” are just two of the more inane permutations. They’re cute, but like the film itself, they can wear a bit thin.

The farcical pitch of “Friended” is well-aimed, though it wobbles a bit as it passes home plate. A climax involving blackmail, kidnapping and

an actual suicide attempt go further than necessary to deliver the movie’s point about insincere connections.

The story’s message may not be the most original one in the world – put down your device and make eye contact – but it’s fun to watch it unfold in a world that, while far from realistic, feels real enough.

• “Friended to Death” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains crude language. It runs 93 minutes.

Hip protectors must be worn properly to offer any benefit Dear Doctor K: I have osteoporosis. I’ve heard about “hip protectors” that reduce the risk of hip fracture if you fall. Are they worthwhile?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis contributes to about 300,000 hip fractures in the United States each year. The hip is not the most common site of an osteoporosis-related fracture (it follows behind the spine and wrist). But a hip fracture can have particularly devastating consequences.

Hip fractures can impair your ability to walk or perform everyday activities, such as dressing yourself or rising from a chair.

At best, the breaks require temporary confinement to bed or a wheelchair. But often the injury has lasting effects. More than half of people who break a hip never fully regain their former level of independence.

A hip protector or “hip pad” is a stiff plastic shield underlaid with foam padding that must be strapped onto the hip. There are many different types of hip protectors, which presents a problem in answering your question as to whether they are worthwhile.

Research doesn’t allow a conclusion about hip protectors in

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff general. Many studies are funded by the company that makes the hip protector being studied – which raises a question about whether positive results have been reported accurately.

Some studies suggest that hip protectors may reduce injuries in people at high risk of a fracture who live in nursing homes. But reviews of the best research available have failed to prove that hip protectors reduce hip fractures in older adults who live independently.

The main challenge is getting people to wear the hip protectors consistently and properly. That’s because the pads can be uncomfortable and awkward. Also, you can still fall in circumstances in which you would not be wearing the pads – in the bath or shower, for example. But if worn consistently by people at risk of hip fracture, these pads could theoretically be beneficial.

Whether or not you choose to use a hip protector, there are other things you can – and should

– do to protect your bones. Ask your doctor about medications to prevent bone loss. Also, make sure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D. (I’ve put a table showing how much calcium and vitamin D men and women should take, by age, on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Add weight-bearing exercises to your fitness routine to encourage bone growth and inhibit bone loss. And learn tai chi or another exercise that improves balance to help prevent falls. Although there have not been a lot of studies of tai chi, the evidence I see convinces me that tai chi offers some protection against falls.

Finally, it is amazing how many older people live in homes that put them at risk for falls: stairs with slippery surfaces, loose rugs, electrical cords in places where people walk and can trip.

There are services available that can inspect a home and identify such risks – and offer remedies to offset them.

Dr. Wallace: I am a very “conservative” young woman. I am against drugs of all kinds. The guy I’m dating is a nice guy, but I know he’s smoking marijuana. I told him that I’d stop seeing him if he didn’t quit. I know he cares for me very much.

Other than the fact that he smokes pot, he’s a great guy and I could see myself spending the rest of my life with him.

My problem is that he keeps denying that he is smoking pot, saying that I have no proof. However, I do have proof.

He has left his jacket at my house and there were several marijuana cigarettes in his pockets.

When I returned the jacket to him I asked him about the pot. He denied there was any in his pocket.

I have also smelled pot smoke on him, and he had a roach clip in his car. I would guess that I’m 99 percent sure he is a pothead. To be honest, I am more upset by his lying to me than about his pot smoking.

Not only that, but I also have to study two hours on Saturday or Sunday, but I get to decide which day.

I also earned a varsity letter in wrestling.

Everybody thinks I’m a pretty tough guy, but I do have one flaw.

Crying is a natural human response to pain, sorrow and even joy. By crying you are showing that you feel events deeply and are in tune with your emotions, and this is critical for maintaining good mental health.

I don’t know how serious this new relationship is, but it appears to be a long-lasting one – and whether you approve or not, this woman is in your son’s life in the role of part-time mother.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mother of a 1-year-old boy, Zack. His father, my ex, has shared custody, but we don’t have a very good co-parenting relationship.

Shortly after I gave birth, he left me to be with a woman he had met while I was pregnant, and they are still in a relationship.

She thinks it’s OK to post pictures of Zack on her social media sites.

I have a problem with this, not least of all that it is incredibly hurtful to see another woman pretend she is in a “mother” role with my son.

I have confronted my ex about this and although he told me he would talk to her about it, he also told me it is none of my business what happens while Zack is in his care.

If bridge partners do everything correctly, they can picture themselves walking off into the sunset, but it probably doesn’t add anything to their bank accounts.

This deal, though, requires a different box: the one that you think outside of. The winning defense requires a play that many would not even consider.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads his fourth-highest heart. Assuming that declarer will hold up his ace until the third round, how can East-West defeat the contract?

West leads the heart four and East puts up his jack, bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high. When South ducks, East continues with his heart queen. Declarer plays low again.

At this point, most Wests would follow suit with their three, advertising that they have led from a five-card suit. Then, South would take the third heart and run his diamond nine (or jack). East could win, but West has no entry. Declarer would take one spade, one heart, four diamonds and four clubs for an overtrick. Yes, East could shift to the spade king at trick three, but that would only save the overtrick.

West has to realize that establishing his heart suit is a waste of time, because he does not have an entry. At trick two, he should overtake his partner’s heart queen with his king and shift to the spade 10. Then the defenders will take three spades, two hearts and one diamond for down two.

Ordinance No.2014-04 AN ORDINANCE TO TAX AND LICENSE FOREIGN FIRE INSURANCE COMPANIES

FOX RIVER AND COUNTRYIDE FIRE/RESCUE DISTRICT KANE AND DUPAGE COUNTIES, ILLINOIS RESOLUTION NO 2014-02 RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ILLINOIS MUNICIPAL LEAGUE TO ACT AS A CLEARINGHOUSE IN THE COLLECTION AND DISTRUBITION OF THE 2% FIRE DEPARTMENT TAX DUE TO THE FOX RIVER AND COUNTRYIDE FIRE/RESCUE DISTRICT, KANE AND DUPAGE COUNTIES, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, the Illinois Municipal League has developed a program to assemble and distribute the 2% Fire Department Tax due to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, Kane and DuPage Counties, Illinois; WHEREAS, this program is of benefit to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, Kane and DuPage Counties, Illinois.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: SECTION 1. That the Illinois Municipal League is hereby authorized by the corporate authorities of this Fire Protection District to receive and examine the reports and payments of the 2 fire department taxes tendered this Fire Protection District by foreign fire insurance companies writing such business on property located within the corporate limits of this Fire Protection District.

SECTION 2. That the Illinois Municipal League shall keep a permanent, accurate and complete record of all such tax payments received from foreign fire insurance companies and the distribution of such payments to the Fire Protection District and that all such records shall be open to the inspection of municipal officials during reasonable office hours.

SECTION 3. That this Fire Protection District hereby agrees to pay to the Illinois Municipal League for the cost of maintaining the services of the aforementioned Fire Insurance Tax Program a fee of 7%, based upon the amount of the 2% fire department taxes actually collected by the League and received by the Fire Protection District, such fee to be deducted by the League prior to distributing the annual tax proceeds to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, Kane and DuPage Counties, Illinois.

SECTION 4. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage.

WHEREAS, the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District (the "District") is a fire protection district duly organized pursuant to the laws of the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, the District Board of Trustees (the "Board") has full power to pass all necessary ordinances, and rules and regulations for the proper management and conduct of the business of the District for carrying into effect the objects for which the District was formed (70 ILCS 705/6); and WHEREAS, The District intends to establish an ordinance to tax and license foreign fire insurance companies as provided in Foreign Fire Insurance Company Fees (65 ILCS 5).

NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Ordained by the Board of Trustees of Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District: Section One: It shall be unlawful for any corporation, company or association, not incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois, to engage in the District, in effecting fire insurance, or to transact any business of fire insurance in the district, while in default by not fully complying with any of the requirements of this Ordinance, and until such requirements shall have been fully complied with; but this provision shall not be undertaken in violation of this Ordinance.

Section Two: Any such corporation, company or association not incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois, which is engaged in the District in effecting fire insurance shall pay the Secretary of the District, for the maintenance, use and benefit of the Fire Department of the District, a sum of money equal in amount to two (2) percent per annum of the gross receipts received as premiums upon fire insurance policies by any and all agents of such corporation, company or association, during the year ending on the first day of July in each year, for any insurance effected, or agreed to be effecting on property located in the District by or with such corporation, company or association during such year.

Section Three: Every person acting in the District as agent, for or on behalf of any such corporation, company or association, shall, on or before the fifteenth day of July of each and every year, render the Secretary of the District a full, true and just account verified by his oath, of all premiums upon fire insurance policies which, during the year ending the first day of July preceding such report, shall have been received by him, or by some other person for him, in behalf of any such corporation, company or association on property located in the District. Such agent shall also at the time of rendering the aforesaid report, pay to the Secretary of the District the sum of money for which each such company, corporation or association, represented by him is chargeable, by virtue of the provisions of this Ordinance.

Section Four: The sum of money for which such company, corporation or association is so chargeable may be recovered of it, or its agents or agent, by an action in the name of and for the use of the District as for money had and received. Nothing in this section shall be held to exempt any person, corporation, company or association from indictment and conviction under the provisions of an act entitled "An Act to enable cities, towns, villages and fire protection districts, organized under any general or special law to levy and collect a tax or license fee from foreign fire insurance companies for the benefit of organized fire departments", in force July 1,1895, as amended.

Section Five: No insurance agent in the District shall have any insurance business or dealings with any company, association or corporation not incorporated under the laws of this State, which shall be in default for not reporting or making payments as hereinbefore provided, until it shall have complied with all the requirements of this Ordinance.

Section Six: Any person, firm, or corporation violating any of the provisions of this article shall be fined not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than two hundred dollars for each offense.
