s graduation season is wrapping up in central Kane County, I had a moment to think about my own graduations and my almost two decades in the working world.

Did I achieve what I have wanted to achieve? Were my goals met? I would answer a

Ex-House speaker charged with violating banking laws, lying to FBI Hastert could face five years for each count of indictment

Dennis Hastert, who served as the U.S. representative of the 14th Congressional District for 20 years, was charged Thursday with structuring cash withdrawals of $952,000 to evade currency reporting laws and then lying to the FBI about it.

According to the charges, Hastert’s bank withdrawals were connected to paying an unidentified person $3.5 million as compensation for Hastert’s unstated “misconduct” against that person – and for Hastert’s actions to be kept secret.

Investigators considered

several reasons behind the cash withdrawals, according to the charges, including that Hastert himself was a “victim of a criminal extortion related to, among other matters, his prior positions in government and J. Dennis was giving Hastert the cash to another individual as payment.”

Hastert, 73, now lives in Plano. Each count of the indictment carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, officials said.

In 2014, the FBI and Inter-

nal Revenue Service began investigating Hastert’s cash withdrawals as transactions to evade the reporting requirement, prosecutors alleged.

When FBI and IRS investigators asked Hastert if he was making the cash withdrawals “to store cash because he did not feel safe with the banking system …

Hastert stated: ‘Yeah … I kept the cash. That’s what I’m doing,’ ” according to the charges.

The person receiving Hastert’s payments was identified in the charges only as Individual A – a person who lives in Yorkville – where Hastert lived previously – and as someone who knew Hastert all his life.

This person met with the former speaker in 2010 to discuss what the charges refer to as Hastert’s “prior misconduct,” according to the charges.

From 2010 to 2014, Hastert allegedly withdrew $1.7 million in cash from various bank accounts he controlled and gave it to Individual A. From June 2010 to April 2012, prosecutors alleged that Hastert made 15 $50,000 cash withdrawals from accounts he controlled at Old Second Bank, People’s State Bank and Castle Bank and provided that cash to Individual A about every six weeks.

Bank officials talked to Hastert about the withdrawals, because federal currency reporting laws require transactions greater than $10,000 to be reported, according to the indictment.

So in July 2012, Hastert began withdrawing cash in increments of less than $10,000, providing $50,000 to Individual A at prearranged meeting places and times, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors alleged Hastert made 106 cash withdrawals under $10,000 from Old Second Bank, People’s State Bank, Castle Bank and Chase Bank to evade federal currency reporting requirements.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, said he was “very surprised and very disappointed” at reports of the indictment against Hastert.

Oberweis said it had been at least a year since he saw the former speaker.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened,” Oberweis said.

“Very surprised and very disappointed.”

Visual and film artists are invited to submit their work for jurying. Selected artists will be featured in pop-up galleries, beginning July 9, and running through Aug. 2.

The pop-up galleries will feature multiple visual art/ film displays at venues in St. Charles. Entries can be in any style or medium.

Artists may submit up to 10 pieces for jurying, and jurors may select one or more pieces from each artist. Artists will be notified of the juries’ selections by June 27.

Business owners question late-night permits, city defends their purpose

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – More than 20 St. Charles businesses for the second year in a row paid an additional $800 or $2,300 to stay open late and serve alcohol.

The St. Charles City Council in April approved latenight permit renewals for 22 establishments. The renewals are for the city’s 2015-16 fiscal year, which began May 1.

Liquor licensees who want to stay open until 1 a.m. pay for an $800 permit while those opting for a 2 a.m. closing have to pay $2,300 each year, according to a city ordinance.

The late-night permit system was implemented in 2014 as the result of talks that began with former St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte about over-serving alcohol and police calls for rowdy downtown activity.

Some bar owners are not pleased about the added cost of serving alcohol, including Dawn Humer, owner of Dawn’s Beach Hut, at 8 N. Third St., St. Charles.

Like she did in 2014, Humer in March addressed the city council about the cost and purpose of the permits.

“If this whole thing came up because of bar behavior, then it should be based on merit, not money,” Humer said.

Dawn’s Beach Hut is one 15 St. Charles businesses that have a 2 a.m. late-night permit. There are seven businesses in the city with a 1 a.m. permit.

Humer said the city allowed her to pay her fee in two installments. The city does not hide the fact it puts a premium on 2 a.m. permits, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said.

“We want people to come to St. Charles, have fun and be safe,” said Rogina, who also is the city’s liquor commissioner.

Instead of simply taking away a liquor license from a business for a violation, Rogina has the option to suspend a late-night permit, as well.

Mark Hoffman, owner of Mark’s Second Street Tavern, 221 S. 2nd St., St. Charles, previously said no business owner would willingly want bad things to happen inside or outside of their buildings.

Hoffman opted for a 2 a.m. late-night permit, but does not appreciate what he calls

a surcharge that was not previously required by the city.

“To put a damper on one of your most thriving industries doesn’t make sense,” Hoffman said. “[The city] should be supporting the industry that is here rather than lamenting the industries that are not.”

Rogina said he wants St. Charles businesses to make money, but he wants to curb bad behavior at the same time. He said he would be open to talking about changing the permit system in the future, but no changes will be implemented for the remainder of its second year.

Dave Stevens, owner of Stevens Automotive Repair, will offer the workshop as two free sessions: one from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the other from noon to 1:30 p.m. Satur-

This will give teenagers and parents a hands-on learning experience with a vehicle and help them become more familiar with what they drive, Stevens said.

Some of these basics include an understanding of the fluids in a vehicle, how to safely change a tire, checking the oil and how to not abuse

This will be the second time Stevens has offered this workshop, having taught the first workshop May 18.

Ideally, Stevens wants to have at the most five teenagers with their parents per session because otherwise it becomes too many students for him to handle, he said.

Because of scheduling conflicts and lack of advertising, the first workshop in May consisted of one parent

and one teenager. However, the teenager’s dad said both he and his son learned something new about car maintenance, Stevens said.

“I strongly believe it’s focused for the student, but ... the parent could definitely learn also,” Stevens said.

Stevens started the workshop because he wanted to give something back to the community and “because kids today don’t have a clue what’s going on with the car.”

Stevens said he wanted the teenagers to apply what they learn in the workshop on their vehicles as he teaches, but for insurance purposes he can’t work on their vehicles.

After taking the workshop, Stevens said he hopes the teenagers will leave with “peace of mind, so that if something does happen,” they don’t need to “freak out.”

He wants them to be “able to handle it on their own.”

GENEVA – Geneva School of Rock will open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 15 W. State St., featuring trial lessons, free demonstrations and a live performance by the School of Rock Plainfield Band.

This is owner Jason Fein’s second School of Rock franchise. He opened another of the performance-based schools two years ago in Plainfield.

“The biggest difference between us and everybody else, is that, in addition to private lessons … they have a group rehearsal,” Fein said. “We put together kids, and every three to four months, they perform at a local rock venue.”

Each season features a specific set of songs, such as the Beatles for one season and then Green Day and Pink Floyd for the next, Fein said.

“Every season, we change drastically, so students are exposed to different styles and eras of music, so they can grow as musicians and people,” Fein said. “It’s just like being in a real band.”

ST. CHARLES – Annual rates have been set for city of St. Charles water, sewer and electric utility customers. The rates were approved at the May 4 St. Charles City Council meeting and will begin showing up on utility bills in June, according to a news release.

While rate structures differ by usage and season, a typical residential household using 1,200 kilo-

watt-hours and 5,000 gallons of water and sewer in the summer will be billed $226.51 a month this year, compared to $214.93 last year, the release stated.

“The city of St. Charles prides itself on providing reliable, well-maintained and cost-effective utility services to its utility customers,” City Administrator Mark Koenen stated in the release. “Utility rates are set to match the cost of service and are competitive with rates in the surrounding area. With

projects, such as the new Red Gate water tower, the [Route 25] water main replacement and overhead electricity line replacement in the near southwest side, we are always looking for ways to improve the quality, capacity and affordability of our utility services.”

But the questionable discussion was not public knowledge until a year later, when it was discovered by the attorney hired by village residents who were opposed to the now-scuttled project. A complaint could not be filed with the attorney general’s public access counselor, who has binding authority to enforce open-government laws and impose corrective action on violators, because the window under current law of 60 days from the actual meeting had long since passed.

McSweeney’s bill has a two-year statute of limitations and language meant to deter overly broad or politi-

cally-motivated nuisance requests.

Should the bill not clear the General Assembly by midnight June 1, the number of votes needed to pass it increases to a three-fifths super-majority, or 36 of 59 Senators. The threshold of votes if House concurrence on the amendment is needed would increase from 60 to 71 votes.

The ongoing budget battle between the Democratic-dominated General Assembly and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner could very likely mean lawmakers will be called back into special sessions through the summer.

An Oakwood Hills-inspired improvement to the Open Meetings Act may end up getting passed by Sunday’s end of session.

House Bill 175, which would allow people to report possible violations of the act within 60 days of discovery, rather than 60 days from the meeting in question, was resurrected after being stuck in a subcommittee for a month and is headed to the Senate floor after a 15-0 vote Wednesday by the Senate Executive Committee.

David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, filed the legislation in response to what was potentially an illegal July 2013 meeting by the Oakwood Hills Village Board in which members privately discussed the monetary windfall that would come from building a 430-megawatt, $450 million power plant in the small town. The Open Meetings Act, which among other things limits what governments can debate behind closed doors, does not contain an exemption that covers such a discussion.

Wednesday.

The enforcement period, which ran from May 14 through Monday, was done in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns, the release stated.

Santorum now playing to little guy THE WASHINGTON POST Rick Santorum officially entered the GOP presidential race Wednesday, pitching himself as an economic populist in touch with working-class voters suspicious of both “big government and big business.”

So, his candidacy might test how strong populist sentiment has become among the Republican rank and file – if, that is, he is seen as anything more than the Christian moralizer he has become famous for playing.

Santorum has been among the sternest of culture warriors over the past three decades.

His most notable legislative accomplishment in 12 years in the Senate was shepherding a bill that banned late-term abortions. He also successfully pushed restrictions on “fetus farming” for research or medical purposes. Part of his breakthrough in the 2012 GOP contest owed to his frank discussions about raising a child with a life-threatening disability; he brought her onstage Wednesday. He stresses the importance of family, pointing out that government can’t read bedtime stories to children.

Yet just as often he strikes a sour note, as when he recently said he wouldn’t attend a gay wedding.

Santorum will face strong competition from Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and others for the evangelical Christian voters who propelled his 2012 campaign. He is therefore emphasizing his sympathies with working-class voters. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a piece of coal,” he said Wednesday, brandishing a chunk of black rock and explaining his grandfather worked in the mines after fleeing fascist Italy.

rum argues the GOP needs to woo “middle- and lower-middle-income Americans from industrial and rural communities with generally conservative values,” millions of whom stayed home in 2012. These “blue-jeaned workers,” he said, “have been left behind and see little hope for the future.” He supports raising the minimum wage and criticizes other Republicans’ preoccupation with cutting taxes for the wealthy.

Neither of these positions is outrageous. But they, along with seemingly everything else Santorum believes, emerge from a backward-looking traditionalism that esteems an imperfect past and condemns the reforms of the past several decades. “Dramatic, dangerous changes are taking place in America,” he hyperbolically warns in his book, in which he laments the erosion of the U.S. manufacturing economy and the “coarsening” of society.

“The greatest threat to the average American’s achieving his dream today is a dysfunctional culture,” he insists. This line of thinking dismisses the progress of recent years, such as on gay and lesbian rights, and encourages overheated attacks on globalization and free trade.

For now, Santorum’s pitch doesn’t seem to be resonating, either because it’s not what rank-and-file Republicans want or because they don’t believe he is the best exponent of these values. He might not even make it into the first GOP debate, scheduled for August, which will exclude candidates without decent poll numbers. He surprised many when he won 11 primary and caucus states in 2012. If his aggressive, populist touch works as well in the competitive 2016 environment, it will be far more unexpected.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR What a lovely spring day To the Editor: Early one afternoon in May, I returned home with groceries, spotting a female duck near our flower mound by the street. She was waddling in circles and quacking nonstop. I then went to see what the nervous commotion was all about, only to hear multiple “peeps” from her babies.

Looking down, I spied what I perceived as four babies in the city drain pipe – I phoned the fire/rescue squad to inquire

about a rescue of baby ducklings. They asked several questions as to their location and replied they would be over to check. Shortly after, two men came in their fire department vehicle with equipment to lift the heavy drain cover, plus a net on a long pole. By this time mother duck was moving away from us and our actions, into the neighbor’s yard.

We ended up rescuing 12 swimming babies from the drain, carefully carrying them to mom (they were none the worse for wear), and making

sure they would follow her – not me! Finally she told her brood, “Let’s get out of Dodge!” They left the premises with a blinding speed of about ½ mph.

I want to personally thank those two men for their quick timing, friendliness, smiles and fast work to save part of the planet.

My, oh my, those tiny babies were so cute and soft. What a lovely spring day.

EST AURORA – Justin Taormina came into last week’s Class 3A West Aurora Sectional with the hope to break the school record in Geneva’s 4x100-meter relay.

But as teammate Ryan Skibinski crossed the finish line in the last leg, not only did Taormina and the group break the school record, they also realized there was a chance at hitting the state qualifying time.

As the four waited anxiously for the times and places to show up on the West Aurora scoreboard, the number finally came across.

Third place and a time of 42.6... The place didn’t matter, but 42.6 what?

The state qualifying time was 42.64, which meant the Vikings needed to know, and right away. After a call was made to the press box by coaches, the four erupted as they were told a time of 42.60 was the group’s official time.

Taormina and Skibinski were the last two legs of the relay, which started with Justin Nebel and Donald Friedel as the two two runners.

“It was such a great feeling,” Taormina said. “Honestly, our main goal was the break the school record, which was 43.07, and to hit state qualifying time was just an awesome feeling. We all started jumping up and screaming like little kids.. it was a lot of fun.”

Taormina knew Geneva’s long-jump workouts allowed him to peak at the right time.

“Our workouts and training allow us to peak during sectionals and state,” Taormina said. “I knew I had the jump in me, it was just about being prepared and ready to compete.”

“It should be a great environment [today],” Taormina said of the long jump event.

“It should be very fun and interesting to watch. I just have to live up to the hype and am excited to see what I can do.”

Geneva coach Gale Gross knows how important Taormina has become to Geneva’s track and field program.

Qualifying for events on and off the track shows just how much the junior is capable of and how much potential for the future he has.

HOFFMAN ESTATES – The last weekend of the IHSA boys tennis season is hardly the time to hold anything back.

For St. Charles North senior Aaron Amburgey, that even applies to his self-assessments.

Speaking of the 6-1, 6-2 defeat he suffered against Belvidere North’s Anderson Park in the second round of the state tournament, Amburgey said, “It was probably my worst loss of the year, but I think I played pretty well against him.”

Amburgey’s resolve proved even better, as he rallied to comfortably defeat downstate Aaron foes Jay NieAmburgey brugge (Effingham St. Anthony) and Logan Bennett (Marion) to advance to today’s fourth-round consolation match against Wheaton Academy freshman Ty Krill.

Amburgey defeated Krill last weekend for the St. Charles East Sectional title.

“He has a really huge serve and really big forehand and plays aggressively, so I’ll have to make sure I’m playing good defense,” Amburgey said.

Teammate Matt Kramer lost both of his singles matches and was eliminated, while the North doubles tandem of Luke Dunteman and Matt Ernst bowed out after sandwiching a win between two losses.

North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said the team’s statebound contingent “poured out all of their efforts” across three sites. Once their tournament runs concluded, Kramer (Rolling Meadows) and Dunteman and Ernst (Barrington) traveled to watch Amburgey close his day at Hoffman Estates.

“That was really cool to have them there,” Amburgey said.

Although both of St. Charles East’s doubles teams were eliminated, Saints coach Rob Livermore saw development. Connor Anderson and Alex Winters, the team’s top pairing throughout the spring, rebounded from a first-set loss,

“I think they were just really excited about state and just overhitting the ball,” Livermore said. “Once they settled down, they started playing some great tennis.”

Anderson and Winters finished 2-2. The pairing of Nick Hauptmann and Kevin Schreiner was 1-2, bowing out with a three-set loss to Alton’s Carl Stradal and Andrew Hays. Stradal and Hays took the third set, 6-0, after East won the second set, 7-5.

“That second set really took a lot out of them, to be in it that long,” Livermore said. “But it was a great experience for those guys.”

called it “kind of a surreal moment” when his son, Andrew, a junior, and Bulldogs senior Adam Maris qualified for state as a doubles team.

Maris, a program pillar, and Andrew Nelson have known each other for years, attending the program’s summer camps alongside one another while getting to know past Bulldogs standouts well before they sported that brand themselves.

Andrew Nelson, naturally, tagged along when his dad, Batavia’s longtime girls coach before taking the boys’ job for the recently retired Bob Kummer, coached at state tournaments.

“Ever since he was seven or eight years old, he’s been coming to state tournaments with

me and watching the girls and that,” Brad Nelson said. “And I can remember talking to him and saying, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if someday you got to the state tournament?’ And [last week], it happened.”

The Bulldogs’ duo experienced a short-lived run, however, after opening tournament play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Matthew Mosley and Patrick Flattery of Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. Separate opponents from closer to home – Hinsdale South’s Rohan Chinwalla and Peter Alex and the Jacobs duo of Matt Toomire and Riley Rowan – topped the Bulldogs’ tandem by respective scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3.

Marmion’s John King also went 1-2 and suffered elimina-

tion. He opened the day with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Neuqua Valley’s Brett Meyer, rebounded to top Kramer, then lost, 6-3, 6-4 to O’Fallon’s Riley Muren.

Krill – a Geneva resident, like King – remains alive, but will have to work his way back through the consolation draw after a 6-3, 6-0 loss to against Highland Park’s Jacob Edelchik in the third round.

Krill opened the day with a pair of dominant victories, yielding a combined six games to Mohammed Walji (Barrington) and Jack Morkin (Normal University).

The St. Francis doubles team of Chris Chacko and Nick Kovach also went 2-1 to open the tournament and will open play today with a thirdround consolation match.

Both teams had their aces on the mound, and after three scoreless innings, it seemed to be headed that way.

After falling behind by two runs in the fourth, the Storm responded with a five-run fourth inning to lead them past Batavia, 9-2, and end the Bulldogs’ season.

“We went into this game thinking it was going to be low scoring,” Holm said. “I didn’t expect to hit that much and I didn’t expect them to hit that much. That was the difference in the game. They out hit us and that says a lot because I thought we hit the ball pretty well today.”

Batavia (16-19) gave senior pitcher Evan Acosta a two-run cushion when Tyler Kledzik hit a two-run double to deep center field, scoring Kyle Niemiec and Luke Beckmann.

Holm felt his team was in a good position when he saw the two runs cross the plate.

“I thought ‘Evan is on fire’ and we’re in a pretty good spot right now,” Holm said.

“But that’s baseball. ... [South Elgin] earned it. They hit the cover off of the ball today.”

Acosta struggled through the South Elgin (22-7) five-run, six-hit fourth inning and was never able to get in a similar groove as he was early in the game.

The senior southpaw allowed just two hits in his first three innings on the mound.

“That was probably the best hitting team I have faced all season,” said Acosta, who finished with a 5-2 record on the mound this year. “My offspeed pitches were kind of a struggle all day and when the only thing really working is your fastball, it’s tough to get through a lineup like that. “ “When you give up five runs in an inning, sometimes it’s hard to get back out there and get in the rhythm you were in before. It was a tough one today, that’s for sure.”

The Bulldogs had eight hits on the day, but really only threatened South Elgin starter Max Keough in the fourth.

The senior and Wisconsin-Oshkosh commit finished with seven strikeouts and only allowed three baserunners in the final three innings.

Keough knew he was up against a good opposing pitcher in Acosta, but thought his offense really sparked his performance on the mound.

“Evan is a really good pitcher,” Keough said. “For us to

hit him (11 hits in five innings) the way we did says a lot about our team. With them hitting the way they did, it made my job easier to just go out there, throw strikes and trust my defense behind me.”

If the Storm’s response in the fourth didn’t hurt Batavia, the three runs South Elgin added in the fifth couldn’t have helped the cause any more.

The Storm added one more in the sixth for their nine-spot in the game, and Batavia could not respond.

Holm knew the year, record-wise, was a bit of a roller coaster for his Bulldogs, but there were positives for him to take away from this season.

“We came in expecting to not hit well, or for that to be an area in which we struggled,” Holm said. “I think we hit very well this year and had our seniors step up. This kind of thing happens, it just usually doesn’t happen when you want it to.”

South Elgin will take on Willowbrook on Saturday, back at Wheaton North for the regional championship.

“That was a very good pitcher. He brought some heat and had nice curveball,” Wassel said of Gosbeth.

Gosbeth also was the only batter to reach base off Slattery. With two outs in the seventh, Gosbeth refused to let his team lay down and fold, smacking a base hit to left field before being left on base to end the game.

“A good high school baseball game, I thought it was pretty well played,” West Chicago coach Dan McCarthy said.

“Fred Gosbeth probably threw one of his better games this year.”

Geneva will take on Glenbard North for the regional title at 10 a.m. Saturday.

But he stayed with his freshman hurler.

“She’s a sophomore at this point,” he said with a smile.

“She’s been through 30 games.

She is just tough as nails.

She’s pitched against Lockport, Waubonsie Valley and St. Charles East, so she has been in big games.”

James, who drove in three runs in the contest on her fourth-inning, two-run single and her sixth-inning solo blast to dead center, said she went to plate in the sixth looking to connect.

“We were looking for insurance runs,” James said. “I knew my teammates had my back.”

She credited senior Kaitlyn Waslawski with rallying the troops at the right time, prior to the North Star fourth inning. “ ‘Kato’ brought us together and said we needed to go up to the plate and get on base,” James, a fellow senior, said. “We produced runs and played as a team.”

St. Charles North will now play for the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenbard West High School.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HOFFMAN ESTATES – Jordan Hall threw five shutout innings and Delaney Devor drove in two runs as East (29-5) cruised to an 8-0 shutout of Addison Trail to advance to the Class 3A Conant Regional final.

“It was really nice to get this game in,” Saints coach Kelly Horan said. “With the rain and everything, you can sometimes wait and wait and it was good for us to get the postseason feel, and get this first win under our belts.”

Hall, now 20-4 in the circle this year, had six strikeouts in her five innings of work and only gave up two hits.

Horan thought it was an allaround good game for East to start what she hopes will be a deep run into the playoffs.

“Jordan did a nice job of executing the game plan,” Horan said.

“She mixed pitches well, hit her spots and that’s what we want from her. We know from here on out that we are going to face great competition and we are ready to go.”

East will take on Conant on the Cougars’ home field at 3 p.m. on Saturday for the regional title.

Naperville North 4, Geneva 3: At Aurora, Rylie Porretto homered

for Geneva as the Vikings’ season came to an end in the Class 4A West Aurora Regional semifinal. Kailtyn Plocinski struk out six in relief for the 23-9 Vikings as well.

Ridgewood 3, Rosary 0: At Norridge, Rosary was shut out to end its season by host-Ridgewood in the Class 3A Ridgewood Regional semifinal.

BASEBALL Aurora Central Catholic 6, Mendota 2: At Wheaton, ACC advanced to the Class 3A St. Francis Regional championship with a win over Mendota.

The Chargers will take on St. Francis in the regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

His leadership on and off the field, along with his talent, are second to none.

During the Upstate Eight Conference coaches meeting Tuesday, Wright was unanimously selected as the 2014-15 Upstate Eight Conference Baseball Player of the Year.

Cory Wright Coach Todd Genke confirmed that this is the first time the conference has named an official “Player of the Year.”

“He is the heart and soul of this program,” Genke said. “He is the first to practice and the last to leave and being the recipient of this award just speaks volumes to how special of a player Cory is.”

Genke has been asked and has spoken on numerous occasions about Wright to anyone who has watched the Kansas State-commit play this season.

But Genke, with a laugh, said he could “never get tired of talking about

One aspect Genke stressed that many people do not see, as he has been privileged to witness on a day-to-day basis, is Wright’s leadership.

“He is just a tremendous human being,” Genke said of Wright. “It’s amazing to see how his peers react to him, but more than that, he is a better person off the field. He has truly been a joy to be around and an honor to coach.”

Wright will be a unanimous UEC All-Conference selection as well, and Genke has nominated the left-hander for All-State and All-American.

Wright, a pitcher/first baseman, is hitting .462 this season, with 48 hits, 15 doubles and two home runs.

On the mound, Wright is a masterful 8-0, with a minuscule 0.57 ERA, striking out 57 batters in 49 innings pitched.

He is also the school’s all-time pitching wins leader and is a big reason why he and his North Star team are vying for a long postseason run.

GLEN ELLYN – The St. Charles North softball team pounded out 10 hits, including three home runs, over three innings Thursday, to top Wheaton North and move into the Class 4A Glenbard West Regional final.

North Star home runs by Kaitlyn Waslawski, Alex Millett and Amanda James contributed to nine consecutive St. Charles North runs and a 9-2 victory over the Falcons (11-21).

Held hitless through the first three innings, the North Stars exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, with two-out, two-run singles by Samantha Hausl and James, and Waslawski’s towering two-run blast well over the

left-field fence.

“Over the course of seven innings, our lineup is going to come at you,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “From top to bottom, we can hit and we can run. Over the course of seven innings, we are going to catch up.”

The North Stars (26-5) were in trouble early, but freshman pitcher Jillian Waslawski worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second by striking out three straight Falcon hitters.

Already up, 1-0, the Falcons scored another run in the third on three consecutive singles to start the inning. However, Jillian Waslawski again got out of the jam, striking out the next two hitters and getting the third out on a diving catch from Abby Howlett on a pop fly behind the first-base bag.

Scaccia makes most of redshirt season at Butler ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Freshman year was tough for Anthony Scaccia.

The Batavia High School product helped lead the Bulldogs to a state championship in 2013, earning MVP honors in the Class 6A state title game. A season later, he didn’t play one down during his freshman season at Butler, instead redshirting and helping his teammates prepare for games as a member of the scout team.

It was not what Scaccia expected from his first year playing college football, but it’s also something that he can appreciate in hindsight.

“At first, to be honest, I was pretty hurt,” Scaccia said.

“Physically, I thought I was at the same level as everyone else, skillwise. But I think mentally, I just was not there.

I had about two weeks to memorize the playbook when I got there, and I wasn’t ready.

At first, it kind of hurt, but the first half of the season, I realized that was probably best for me just to develop. I am going against grown men, so to be thrown into that right away, it was pretty tough. But I think I finally started to accept my role after a few weeks and kind of got into the hang of things.

“It definitely hurt. We all have our meetings at the end of fall camp, and [Butler running backs coach Patrick] Doherty sat me down and said, ‘Mentally, we just don’t think you’re ready.’ A college playbook is so much different than a high school playbook, and studying and studying and studying but mentally, I just wasn’t there. No freshman offensive players started last year. Offensively, none of the guys really were able to mentally get on the same level as everyone else.”

Scaccia wasn’t expecting to be redshirted, and he faced a brand-new experience being on Butler’s scout team. It was quite a trip down the ladder for someone who had starred a year earlier on a championship team.

I absolutely got better going against the starting defense every day. But at the same time, I wasn’t learning our playbook, so it was kind of – I wouldn’t say holding me back, but at the same time, it would’ve been awesome if I would’ve got to actually play.

But I started to understand what my role on the team needed to be.”

Those few silver linings indicated what Scaccia did: He made the most of his situation. Although certainly not thrilled to be a member of the scout team, his work ethic and determination earned him the team’s Unsung Hero Award, or the scout team MVP. “I actually got an award for unsung hero on offense, so it’s basically scout team player of the year but it’s called Unsung Hero,” Scaccia said. “When I told my family about it, they were all happy. It wasn’t exactly expected that I’d be receiving at the end of the year.

But I was able to understand, yeah, I wasn’t mentally ready

and how to accept this new role and help the team as best as I can, come to practice with energy and excitement and really give it my all.

“My friend John Hall, he’s from Bolingbrook, we’re both freshman running backs, and every practice we’d just kind of pump each other up and just really try to get motivated because it’s really tough playing scout team. We both got the award for offensive players. We just kept challenging ourselves, competing against ourselves, which is really what helped us keep going.”

Scaccia said coaches appreciated how hard he worked and the effort he gave as a member of the scout team, and he’s got the hardware to prove it. Now his focus returns to getting back on the field on gamedays. Scaccia is training hard this offseason to do just that. He said he might be playing a more wide receiver than running back, too. One thing is for certain: He has high hopes for next season.

“It’s extremely high,” Scaccia said of his anticipation level for the upcoming

campaign. “Once I start to understand the plays and really stop having to think so much on the field, I’ll start to make more and more plays and I’ll really start to get comfortable and get that feeling back. At first, when we first came into fall [practice], it was really a grind because I didn’t quite know the plays, so I just wasn’t playing like myself. But in spring ball, everything’s slowed down, and mentally I start catching up

and I can tell I started making more and more plays. So that was really a confidence booster. Going into this season, I’m really pumped and excited.

“I think I’ll be able to make a difference next year for sure.”

Decoration Day honors fallen soldiers Boy Scouts May 30 is the former date for the holiday many of us called “Decoration Day.” You may know that in the years following the Civil War, a Gen. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (North) ordered that the graves of those who died in defense of their country in the late rebellion be decorated with flowers.

At that point there were about 20,000 graves, Union and Confederate, at Arlington Cemetery.

Now, a century-and-a-half later, more than 300,000 people have been laid to rest in that particular location.

We have continued the practice of honoring those who served in the military and who, in Lincoln’s words, “have given the last full measure of devotion.”

Even in the rain!

There are lots of ways to configure our observance of Memorial Day, right? Parades or picnics?

Just in time for that compelling personal story that says it all, there – in my Facebook feed – was just the thing.

Thanks to Kathy Fleming for sharing a tale of her Uncle, Wilfred Oakes.

He was killed in action in France on the day before the Armistice was signed. What a blow to the family and to our community to lose this 22-year-old young man just hours before the war’s end.

Kathy posted the poem written by Wilfred’s sister, Lillian Oakes.

Lillian Oakes had written several stanzas revealing the two letters from

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry the War Department – wounded, then dead.

Why him? It was not possible for the family to join the merry celebration of the Armistice.

She concludes: A few years later his body came home In a flag-draped coffin, at rest.

To stay in this America The place he loved best.

I can still hear “Taps” and the gun salute The song of “The Vacant Chair” Yes, these are my memories of that Armistice Day And our boys who fought “Over There.”

So, families with a direct military connection have a unique and special image, a particular brand of patriotism. One may wonder how others are brought to the parade?

Those songs in the poem are familiar. Somewhere, somehow, I know the words by heart, as well a “Long Way to Tipperary,” all the service songs and the lines to those World War II morale-building films with John Wayne in

his submarine, airplane and the hills of Iwo Jima.

Raise your hand and smile if you, too, did a mandatory “poppy poster.”

Many chose a Flanders Field motif without a clue that the site was in Belgium. Did you march in the parade as a Scout? Wasn’t easy to be a unit behind the horses, right?

Later, as a college student in the ’60s, I learned the songs of protest, alternatives and accountability: “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Give Peace a Chance.”

There I am now, watching the parade, saluting the flag with my hand on my heart, staying alert and involved.

A final note on the fallen American Legion Post 342 has lost a friend, World War II veteran and past commander Bill Shaban, who was 91 years old.

Finally, have you put two-and-two together to recognize that Kathy Oakes Fleming is the daughter of Leroy Oakes, for whom that glorious natural place is named.

P.S. May 30 is the day that Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.

I presume I was named for a Hollywood starlet and not this sainted woman ... .

Boy Scout Troop 13 of St. Charles teamed up with Mary Zaander of Witness Tree Native Landscapes Inc. and Josh Nelson of Campton Township to help with restoration efforts at Harley Woods park in Campton Township. The troop spent the morning pulling an invasive plant – garlic mustard – according to a news release.

While helping with the project, the Scouts also learned about native and invasive plants in the area, as well as how to identify common plants and why native plants are important to a healthy ecosystem.

By the end of the day, the Campton Township dump truck left with a bed full of garlic mustard, states the release.

Anesthesia and antibiotics make prostate biopsy less risky Dear Doctor K: My last PSA test result was abnormal, so my doctor has scheduled a prostate biopsy. What can I expect? Is there anything I can do to make the procedure more comfortable and reduce the risk of complications?

Dear Reader: An abnormal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test result often leads to a prostate biopsy. A biopsy is the only way to confirm the presence of cancer.

The most common biopsy procedure is guided with transrectal ultrasound. While you lie on your side, the doctor inserts an ultrasound probe into your rectum. Ultrasound is like a tiny little radar device. It bounces sound waves off your prostate, and the reflected sound waves form a picture.

Before doctors had ultrasound to use, they often performed biopsies of the prostate at random places – and sometimes missed cancers that were there.

The ultrasound scans the prostate, looking for areas that may contain cancer. When such an area is spotted by the ultrasound, a spring-loaded device rapidly inserts a needle through the rectal wall into the suspicious area of the prostate to retrieve tiny tissue samples.

The procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes. Later, the bi-

Most men do not find prostate biopsy overly painful or uncomfortable. Complications occur in only about two men out of every 100, and the complications are not usually serious. But they can be.

I spoke to my colleague, Dr. Marc B. Garnick. He’s a prostate cancer expert at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Following are our suggestions for reducing discomfort and the risk of complications. Discuss them with your doctor: • Anesthesia. This shot is injected into the prostate to numb pain during the procedure. It can be the difference between a tolerable biopsy and an unpleasant one.

• Preventive antibiotics. A prostate biopsy comes with certain risks, including infection.

The biopsy needle can spread bacteria or an infection from the rectal wall to the prostate or bloodstream. Taking preventive antibiotics – before and after the procedure – greatly cuts the risk of infection.

• Skipping the enema. Doctors used to recommend an enema before a biopsy to reduce the chance of infection. The latest studies find that this isn’t necessary. The body can fight infection, especially if you take preventive antibiotics.

• Your medications. Before the biopsy, your doctor may advise you to briefly stop taking daily low-dose aspirin or blood-thinning medicines. These drugs reduce the blood’s ability to clot.

Minor and temporary bleeding is common and expected after the biopsy. However, if bleeding seems to be getting worse, or even if minor bleeding lasts more than 24 hours, tell your doctor. If you experience fever or chills, get to a hospital right away. These could be signs of infection.

Finally, seek care immediately if you stop being able to urinate after a biopsy. The biopsy produces some temporary swelling of the prostate, and this can temporarily make it harder to urinate. This problem is easy to fix, but needs to be treated promptly.

Boy won’t take no for answer Dr. Wallace: I have been dating my boyfriend for a few months, and he is cute, humorous and really smart.

I like him a lot, but he does have a major problem understanding the word no! At first, he was a perfect gentleman, but lately, his sex drive has overpowered him. The best approach to take with a persistent boyfriend is to have a sincere discussion about the matter so that he fully understands your feelings. This is more effective than merely saying, “I’m not ready at this time.”

Honesty trumps lust every time.

Bertolt Brecht, a German playwright and poet who died in 1956, said, “If there are obstacles, the shortest line between two points may be a crooked line.”

If there are obstacles to better play at the bridge table, it is often thinking in crooked lines, not on a straight path.

Today’s deal is an example.

How should South plan the play in four spades? West leads a heart. East wins with his king, cashes the heart ace, and shifts to a low club.

Note the bidding. North’s twoheart cue-bid showed at least 12 high-card points (or a super 11).

Then his raise to three spades indicated a minimum.

But South knew his partnership had at least 26 combined points, so he went on to game. He was also aware that from the auction, he would be able to place the cards better than if the opponents had passed throughout.

When I run this deal in classes, it is disappointing how many declarers cannot resist the temptation of the spade finesse, because it looks like the standard play. But the better players take a few moments to count up the high-card points. Since dummy and declarer combined have 27, the defenders have only 13, yet East opened the bidding. He must have the spade king.

So South should play a spade to dummy’s ace, then lead a low spade. When the king pops up, declarer can claim.

If you count only one thing at the bridge table, make it high-card points. You will find apparent guesses becoming certainties.
