H.C. Storm honors Hubbard, Semonchik

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For as long as there has been H.C. Storm Elementary School, Kathy Hubbard has been teaching there.

The second-grade teacher has been at H.C. Storm School since the school opened in 1978. As she gets ready to retire, the school Wednesday recognized Hubbard for her efforts.

“Her classroom really became a learning laboratory,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said, before unveiling a sign that has been installed in front of the school in her name – Hubbard Circle. “She has made the world a grander place.”

Hubbard was overcome with emotion.

“I’ve never been speechless before, but right now, I think I almost am,” Hubbard said. “I will miss Storm School. It will always be in my heart.”

Her 36-year tenure with Batavia School District 101 puts her in an “elite” group in the district, Schielke said.

“There aren’t many others that have served as long,” he said. “Grace McWayne was a Batavia teacher for 59 years. I think that is a record that will never be broken.”

Hubbard said she wanted to be a second-grade teacher since she was 7 years old.

“My second-grade teacher was such a major role model for me,” Hubbard said. “I wanted to be just like her. You always hope that you will have an impact in children’s lives.”

One of the biggest things she has tried to do for her students is to instill in them a sense of self-worth.

“I want to make sure they can be the best they can be,” Hubbard said.

Schielke also honored retiring music teacher Roxanne Semonchik, who is leaving H.C. Storm School after almost 20 years of service.

Schielke proclaimed the day “Roxanne Semonchik Day.” Fittingly, the school’s fourth- and fifth-grade chorus sang “Go With A Song In Your Heart” to Semonchik, who has sung the song every year to graduating fifth-graders.

“I’m emotionally drained here,” Semonchik said after the song. “It’s the sweetest rendition that I’ve ever heard. This place has been my home for 20 years. It is a second family to me.”

Aliano’s Ristorante is at 90 N. Island Ave. Tickets to the trunk show are $35 each and include hors d’oeurves and wine. They can be reserved by calling the restaurant at 630406-9400.

Anika Patel handled words such as “balalaika” and “luxuriate” with ease at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. ,on Wednesday.

The fifth-grader at Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove also knew the definition of words such as “chary” – it means hesitant.

“I actually knew the words pretty well,” the 10-year-old said. “I didn’t have a hard time spelling them.”

She also wasn’t nervous about being on stage and part of a television broadcast.

Unfortunately, Anika did not make the cut of 50 spellers that will now advance to the semifinals. She didn’t take the loss hard.

Anika Patel won the 2014 Kane County Regional Spelling Bee in March. Patel beat out seven other semifinalists to claim the top prize.

It was Patel’s first time in the regional bee. She had previously won her initial classroom spelling bees in third and fourth grade, but did not advance beyond that.

Officials: STC man dies in jail

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A 25-year-old St. Charles man died Tuesday of a pulmonary embolism while in the Kane County Jail, according to preliminary autopsy results, the Kane County Coroner’s Office said in a statement.

A pulmonary embolism is when one or more pulmonary arteries in the lungs become blocked, usually by blood clots, according to the Albert Love Mayo Clinic website, www.mayoclinic. org.

Albert Love, of the 200 block of Grand Ridge Road in St. Charles, was pronounced dead at 4:21 p.m. Tuesday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva according to a statement from the coroner. Love was being held in the jail on a $15,000 bond on a charge of felony criminal damage to property.

According to reports, Love damaged the back windshield of a 2009 Hyundai.

Love suffered what officials called a “medical event” at 3:30 p.m. in the jail and was treated by medical staff.

A short time after he was returned to his cell, Love was found unresponsive and was then taken to Delnor, officials

said in the statement.

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said he had no other information about Love’s “medical event.”

“Once we complete the investigation, I anticipate having answers to more of those questions,” Gengler said in an email.

According to the sheriff’s office statement, there were no signs of trauma, and Love’s death did not appear to be a suicide attempt.

Love had been in court May 21 and was scheduled for a status hearing June 4, according to court records. On April 30, Kane County Associate Judge Clint Hull denied a request from Love’s public defender to reduce his bond.

Records also show Love was seeking to have his case heard in Kane County Treatment Alternative Court. The alternative court “is a court-supervised mental health treatment program for eligible criminal defendants,” according to the Kane County Mental Health Intervention Guide.

On Oct. 4, 2009, Love was charged with felony criminal damage to government property, but was allowed into the Treatment Alternative Court, completing the program in 2012, records show.

Love had another pending case, misdemeanor criminal trespass to a building. He was charged Dec. 16 in Elgin.

Man charged in Geneva store theft

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Batavia man faces two felony charges in connection with the theft of about $400 in merchandise from a Geneva store, according to police reports.

Ryan P. Bashaw, 35, of the 400 block of Ellen Lane, was charged May 20 with felony theft of merchandise valued at $378 and being previously convicted of theft, according to court records.

Bashaw also was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bashaw is being held in the Kane County Jail on $15,000 bond, records show.

He faces from one to five years in prison on the two felony charges and a fine up to $25,000.

His next court date is today, records show.

According Ryan P. to reports, poBashaw lice were notified shortly after 4 p.m. that a shopper at Cocoon, 212 S. Third St., allegedly left the store on a bicycle without

paying for a book.

Police stopped Bashaw and he agreed to let them search his duffle bags. In addition to the book, police uncovered merchandise from Cocoon in addition to the book – including a wooden rock holder, bath oil, hand cream and 86 quotable cards.

According to police reports, Bashaw admitted to officers that he had taken the items from Cocoon.

Bashaw also was wanted on a warrant from St. Charles Police for failure to appear in court on a charge of resisting arrest.

Three charged with prostitution in St. Charles since April

Jerry Gatlin said prostitution is a Class A misdemeanor but provisions in the law allow enhancement to a Class 4 felony under certain conditions, such as the proximity to a school.

“It’s a fairly complex statute,” he said.

Prostitution is a probational offense, Gatlin said, and typically there will be a fine. Any misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail, he said.

The only element the judge doesn’t have authority over is the offender’s massage license, Gatlin said. He said the state of Illinois would address that through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

opening up throughout the region,” he said. “It is not unique to St. Charles.”

In Elburn, for example, a massage therapy business along Route 38 attracted the village’s attention last year because it was in conflict with the zoning code. Elburn later dropped its case against the owner after it appeared the business also was being used as a tanning salon.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said his city hasn’t had any issues with massage establishments. He noted the city’s police department keeps a “close eye” on the businesses, much like it does for liquor and tobacco compliance checks.

“We’ve had no issues what-

soever,” Burns said. “We welcome the reputable businesses in town.”

Knowing which massage parlors are reputable and which aren’t can be difficult.

“The mere fact that people go in and out of the door doesn’t mean a crime is going on,” Gatlin said.

In order to charge someone of prostitution, he said, police must witness an offer for a sexual service. But getting to that point depends on the right circumstances, Gatlin said, noting undercover officers aren’t always offered a service.

“Just because you don’t see an arrest doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything,” Gatlin said. “It’s just not au-

tomatic when you go through the door. Timing’s everything sometimes.”

In 2012, St. Charles police conducted seven compliance and license inspections of massage parlors. That year netted no arrests or citations for violations, according to the annual report.

When checking compliance, Gatlin said, police are ensuring the establishment’s license is posted as required by the state of Illinois.

“Beyond that, we are simply checking them periodically or in response to a complaint to make sure they’re offering legitimate services,” Gatlin said. “Obviously, in some cases they are offering more.”

A prostitution arrest doesn’t necessarily mean the establishment will close, as the charge is against an individual, Gatlin said.

“Many times what we have seen so far is the massage therapist that has been cited for the violation leaves the area,” he said. “They appear to be very transient.”

Police will, however, continue to work with the landlord to address the problems, Gatlin said. He said police also can address the problem through nuisance abatement procedures for multiple offenses.

A due process is involved in these cases, he said.

At least one of the massage parlors connected to a recent prostitution arrest has since closed. Gatlin said business was struggling to make rent, and the building’s out-of-state owner was more than happy to help address the problem.

“That’s our goal: cooperation from landlords and compliance from business owners,” Gatlin said.

T. CHARLES – It had been about 13 months since the last prostitution arrest in St. Charles when police last month charged a massage parlor employee with the Class A misdemeanor.

And then they made another prostitution arrest.

And another.

These arrests happened within weeks of each other and equal the total number of such arrests made from 2010 to 2013, according to the St. Charles Police Department’s annual reports for those years.

Mayor Ray Rogina takes the recent arrests as a sign Chang-Li that the police Wang are doing their job and doing it effectively, he said.

To have three women charged with prostitution in Hui such a short Zhang timespan – Chang-Li Wang and Hui Zhang in April, Sun Hee Gribat in May – should send a message to others, RogiSun Hee na said.

Man charged with felony possession of fake IDs

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Cortland man was charged with felony possession of fictitious identification after a traffic stop, according to Geneva police reports.

Marco Antonio Pahua, 44, of the 100 block of West Ellen Avenue was charged Thursday, May 15 after a traffic stop.

He posted $7,500 bail and is scheduled to appear in court June 6 for a status hearing, records show.

The charges carry a penalty of one to three Marco years in prison Antonio and/or a fine of Pahua up to $25,000.

According to reports, police clocked Pahua driving 45 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone in a 2004 Ford Escape.

When police pulled him over, he provided an expired Oregon ID card that states it is “not a license to drive.”

He also provided a permanent resident card and a Social Security card, which both turned out to be altered, according to police reports.

Police confirmed his identification cards were fictitious with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and sent his fingerprints to the FBI, according to police reports.

Pahua also was charged with speeding and not having a valid driver’s license, court records show.

GENEVA – Richard G. Dowdell Sr., 76, of Geneva, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014. The visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m.

Monday, June 2, 2014, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., in Batavia, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m.

Dick was born Jan. 18, 1938, to the late Victor and Mary (Houston) Dowdell in Rahway, New Jersey. After graduating from high school in Elizabeth, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served on active duty from 1956 to 1959. In 1960, he was hired as a draftsman for AT&T (now Alcatel-Lucent), where he spent his entire career until retiring as a software designer in 1995.

An avid stamp collector, gardener and cigar aficionado, Dick also enjoyed anything having to do with math and computers – from monitoring his investments to playing Sudoku. As a longtime member of the Moose Batavia Lodge and a Chillini Pod judge, he spent many happy hours in the fellowship of both organizations. He took great pride in his

Irish heritage and counted his USMC service, his degree from Aurora University, and especially his children and grandchildren among the highlights of his life.

Dick is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lynn Dowdell; three sons, Rick (Stephanie) Dowdell, Mark Dowdell and Rob (Traci) Dowdell; two daughters, Karen Doenges and Shannon (Justin) Rounds; six grandchildren, Meghan and Lucas Doenges, Rhiannon and Shaye Dowdell and Hudson and Holden Rounds; his niece, Jacque DuBeau-Colligan; his nephew, Tom DuBeau; his sister-in-law, Lois Wendt; and several other extended family members.

Batavia and Geneva police officers will be on hand at the Batavia Dunkin’ Donuts, 2002 W. Wilson St., to raise awareness and donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics.

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira and Geneva Police Chief Steve Mexin will be on the store’s rooftop between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.

Members of the St. Charles Police Department will be at the Dunkin’ Donuts store at 1711 W. Main St., St. Charles, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. St. Charles Interim Police Chief Steve Huffman will be perched atop the roof at Dunkin’ Donuts while playing his guitar.

The North Aurora Police Department will be at the Dunkin’ Donuts store at 407 South Lincolnway, North Aurora, from 6 to 11 a.m.

BATAVIA – City officials are looking to offer Suncast Corp. up to $7.5 million in incentives in order to keep its manufacturing facility at 701 N. Kirk Road.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended approval of the proposed incentive agreement.

The full City Council is set to vote on the agreement Monday.

Suncast, which makes plastic storage and furniture products, employs about 1,200 people, making it one of the largest employers in Batavia, City Administrator Bill McGrath said.

It also accounts for about 12 percent of the city’s electricity, making it the city’s largest user of electricity.

McGrath told aldermen that Suncast had been con-

sidering leaving Batavia because of increases in the city’s electric costs.

Aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues.

Suncast has been looking at increasing production at the Batavia plant. As proposed, the city would offer Suncast the market-matching rate for growth in excess of the facility’s maximum 2013 usage.

“This will capture the additional activity due to the expansion,” McGrath said in a memo to Mayor Jeff Schielke and aldermen. The city also would offer an incentive depending on power use to “guarantee” Suncast remains in Batavia.

“Over several years, depending upon power usage we will rebate money to Suncast related to the costs of expansion but primarily to remain here,” McGrath said.

The city also would offer some financial assistance with some of the system upgrade expenses associated with the expansion, he said.

The retreat continues THE WASHINGTON POST You can’t fault President Barack Obama for inconsistency. After winning election in 2008, he reduced the U.S. military presence in Iraq to zero. After helping to topple Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, he made sure no U.S. forces would remain.

He has steadfastly stayed aloof, except rhetorically, from the conflict in Syria. And on Tuesday he promised to withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2016.

The Afghan decision would be understandable had Obama’s previous choices proved out. But what’s remarkable is that the results also have been consistent – consistently bad. Iraq has slid into something close to civil war, with al-Qaida retaking territory that U.S. Marines once died to liberate. In Syria, al-Qaida has carved out safe zones that senior U.S. officials warn will be used as staging grounds for attacks against Europe and the United States. Libya is falling apart, with Islamists, secularists, military and other factions battling for control.

We hope Afghanistan can avoid that fate.

But the last time the United States cut and ran from there, after the Soviet Union withdrew, the result was the Taliban takeover, al-Qaida’s safe havens and, eventually, the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, after which everyone said, well, we won’t make that mistake again.

Obama said Tuesday that, assuming Afghanistan’s new president signs a basing agreement, the United States will keep 9,800 troops in the country next year for training and counterterrorism. This is fewer than ideal but better than the immediate “zero option” favored by some of his aides, and it will pave the way for allies to participate, too. But Obama also said the U.S. presence will shrink by half in 2015 and to zero by the time he leaves office.

For years the United States promised to be a partner to a democratic Afghanistan, to help ensure that girls can keep going to school and to lock in the gains that have been won at such a high price by U.S. and other NATO troops. Obama’s implicit message Tuesday was: “Not so much.” If al-Qaida can wait out the United States, it may get another chance. If Afghans have thrown their lot in with the Americans, they will be left on their own.

Growing up with glee On May 22, I graduated from Marmion Academy. Despite the illusion of responsibility a high school diploma may give, I do not consider myself a serious person.

No, the Harry Potter jokes made while my classmates and I stood outside the gymnasium waiting in our gowns do not keep me from growing up, nor does my insatiable hunt for the golden 2048 tile.

But rather, I choose to maintain my dint of absurdity for one simple reason: happiness.

I have come to realize that I do not like serious people. I acknowledge that life requires seriousness at moments, and, along the same lines, I also admit that people who joke incessantly tend to shirk from some responsibility or problem. However, some trample through life with a pallid attitude and wonder why they never find happiness.

I believe that one should never forget how to laugh. Times may get tough, but laughing has fantastic cathartic powers for any occasion. The ability to look at a grim personal situation and find humor in it helps a person realize that things may not be all that bad.

MARMION’S MANLY MAN Kurt Zepeda Scientists might say that joy comes from a collection of chemicals, but I find that it’s a matter of disposition and goals.

Some days, 80-degrees Fahrenheit and sparse cloud coverage make me want to sit outside on my front lawn and soak in the sweetness of life through the grass.

Other days, that blazing-furnace, 80-degree hellfire makes me want to see what scientists say about an unbridled aggression toward tiny devil blades of unkempt green.

Still, on those other days, I’ll guzzle down some saccharine watermelon, perhaps investigate the local house reserves of chocolate, and I’ll laugh at the fact that my skin tone makes me look like Casper, the friendly ghost, incarnate.

In respect to goals, one must possess faith; now, I could have stood on that gym stage and mapped out the rest of my existence, but I didn’t. I don’t fly by

the seam of my trousers in life, but I do find that some uncertainty and quick thinking result in more fun than carrying out a well laid plan. Plus, my trousers come with attachable wings.

In truth, one can plan for every contingency and mistake, but life will still throw a curveball or 10 and end any strategy. I advocate making plans and adding some room for improvisation.

One should have enough trust in themselves to believe that they can overcome any eventuality.

I remain glad knowing that I do not know what I want to do with the rest of my life. No, a certain Pharrell tune has not infiltrated my thought processes, but yes, I do harbor affection for that song. I live with a sense of humor and an optimistic view of things to come, and I’m happy.

GENEVA – Fees paid to the county could change as officials work to maintain a flat property tax levy.

The Finance/Budget Committee on Wednesday endorsed Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick’s request to issue a request for proposals for a fee study.

Onzick said the study is being prompted by financial expectations over the next five years: increasing payroll and benefit expenditures and flat revenues.

Fee increases could help keep the property tax levy flat, he said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen – who campaigned on pledges to freeze the county’s property tax levy – said it’s concerning that, while some revenue streams are increasing, others are declining in big enough num-

bers to neutralize the gains.

Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said the county periodically reviews its fees.

Ultimately, he said, any decision to make adjustments will lie with the County Board.

Board member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, asked which fees will be studied.

Onzick said he plans to reach out to all of the department heads and elected officials to compile a list of fees.

He also will learn what contributes to each fee, such as state statutes, he said.

The committee also supported Onzick’s proposed process for submission of requests for major capital building projects.

The process involves input from standing committees, the Judicial/Public Safety Strategic Planning and Technology Commission, facilities management and the finance department before going to the County Board for approval.

“Conceptually, I think this outline makes sense,” Hoscheit said.

Kaneland OKs technology staffing boost Board members back request despite issues

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Some Kaneland School District 302 Board members expressed frustration at Wednesday’s board meeting over a request to add a full-time staff member to the technology staff and add hours to an existing staffer to reach full-time status.

Board members ultimately unanimously approved the request, which, according to school district documents, could add as much as $43,500 in additional salary.

But some board members wondered why the district didn’t bring up the subject in March, when a $225,000 technology upgrade was approved.

Board member Tony Valente called Wednesday’s request “a hidden cost.” In March, the school board voted, 6-1, to approve the purchase of devices for students at a cost of $225,000.

The plan was to bring the ratio to one device for every three students in the district.

On Wednesday, Julie Ann

Fuchs, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, said “with the addition of all of the new equipment, we are finding it important to adequately support the equipment.”

Valente wasn’t the only board member with questions. Teresa Witt wondered why the technology department would get such attention, when there are other departments that have been forced to work under hardships for extended periods of time.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler said while he understood such concerns, adding to the technology staff is something that needed to be done two years ago.

“That would have been nice to have known when we were voting for it,” Valente said, adding “now I feel as if I am forced to vote for it.”

Board member Peter Lopatin said he “would have appreciated at least a heads up.”

He said, for board members, it’s a learning opportunity and that, in the future, they can “ask better questions.”

Board member Veronica Bruhl asked Tim Wolf, the district’s director of technology, if the plan could be scaled back.

Wolf said that was not possible at this point, and the plan already was being scaled back.

ust as the Nobel Prize marks excellence in achievement, the owners of the Nobel House hope their restaurant represents excellence in food and service.

Geneva residents Jason Levin and Dave Cilio on May 1 opened Nobel House restaurant at 305 W. State St. in downtown Geneva in the space formerly occupied by another restaurant, Tavolino.

The name of the restaurant also pays homage to Geneva’s Swedish roots. Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize, was a Swedish chemist and engineer. The bistro-style restaurant offers chef-inspired American comfort food.

“You can have great food without white tablecloths,” said Nobel House executive chef Marshall McCarty, who has worked in the restaurant business for 12 years.

Levin and Cilio have extensive restaurant experience. They also operate four other restaurants in Chicago, including Merkle’s Bar and Grill in Wrigleyville in Chicago. McCarty started working for Levin and Cilio while he was going through culinary school.

They extensively renovated the building’s interior to achieve the look they wanted. For example, they tore out the building’s ceiling to expose the wooden timbers underneath.

“We saw these beefy, old wooden timbers that we liked,” Cilio said. “It gives it an old, rustic look.”

Nobel House prides itself on its freshness.

“We cook everything from scratch,” McCarty said. “We are proud to say we don’t bring in frozen products.”

Nobel House also smokes its own meats.

“It takes it from something that was tough into something that is tender,” McCarty said.

One of the restaurant’s popular items is a turkey pastrami that is smoked for hours and piled high on marble rye, McCarty said. Nobel House also serves other sandwiches and burgers, along with wild salmon, salads and soup.

McCarty knows how popular craft beer is these days.

“People want to have a large variety,” he said. “Barbecue and craft beer go great together.”

Nobel House also serves beer mussels made with Penrose Brewing Proto Gradus, just one of the beers made at the newly opened Penrose Brewery in Geneva.

Besides the items on its menu, Nobel House also features an ever-changing array of items on the “Market Chalkboard” displayed at the end of the restaurant’s bar, including oysters, cheese and charcuterie, flatless than a month, Nobel House albreads and soups of the day.

AURORA – The Paramount Theatre just announced its full lineup of music acts and comedy stars coming to Aurora for the 2014-15 season.

Donny and Marie Osmond, Jerry Lewis, David Sedaris, Penn and Teller, John Lithgow, Jim Brickman, Vicki Lawrence, Under the Streetlamp and Pilobolus – just to name a few – will perform live on the Paramount stage.

The Paramount’s 83rd season will kick off from 5 to 7 p.m.

Aug. 22, with its annual Season Kick Off Party in the Paramount’s Grand Gallery. Guests to the party will enjoy cuisine prepared by area restaurants, a cash bar and chances to win prizes. Tickets to the pre-show party cost $10. Following the party, the Happy Together Tour will take the stage at 8 p.m. with a 30th anniversary line-up boasting acts such as the Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie; Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night; Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad; Gary Lewis and The Playboys; and Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels. Winemaker spotlight Fruit was important for Cederquist.

He quickly rattled off all the fruit flavors he finds pleasing in chardonnay. Yet, with 20 percent new oak, Matchbook offered a hint of oak.

“It’s a nice in-between,” Cederquist said. “I like the spicy notes new oak can impart. But I love the melon, apple and pineapple characteristics of chardonnay. We don’t need too much oak. I like the fruit components. They are important. I want a vibrant, fresh, lively feel.”

Matchbook has loads of fruit up front and finishes with an oak spice and creme brûlée creaminess. It’s a challenge to get the mix right for Cederquist, just as it’s a daily task during the growing season to manage the vineyard.

“I was familiar with cooler climate chardonnay from the Russian River Valley. But the fruit just does so well here.

We get high pH and low acid, which results in rich chardonnay, and we’ve embraced that.”

ark Rudelich allowed himself to celebrate his biggest track and field accomplishment to date while maintaining a respectful distance from reality.

The Batavia senior high jumper qualified for his first Class 3A state meet by staying grounded.

There’s no use in stopping now.

Rudelich enters Friday’s preliminaries at Eastern Illinois with a plan to keep improving. Doing that, he has learned, requires clinging to your past.

“The key is to remain focused on your specific things that you do wrong,” Rudelich said. “If you have a knee drive that’s bad on one jump, you’ve got to focus on fixing that in your next jump. If you have a bad plant, you’ve got to make sure you readjust your mark to finish it out and do well in it, you know.”

Everything aligned for Rudelich at last week’s Bartlett Sectional at Elgin. He matched a school record by clearing a personal-best 6 feet,

7 inches to take third behind Marmion’s Tyler Maryanski and Erik Miller of St. Charles North, who were ahead on criteria.

Rudelich lamented not seeing classmate Mark Majka qualify alongside him. His friend and frequent training partner was fourth at sectionals, finishing four inches short of the 6-5 qualifying standard.

In Maryanski and Miller, both fellow seniors, Rudelich has the next best thing: Friendly rivals.

“Through jumping and meets, we’ve gotten to all know each other a little bit better, you know,” Rudelich said. “I like those guys.

They’re fun guys.”

Miller finished fourth in 3A last season and isn’t shy about his designs on advancing to the top of the podium this time.

“Give my legs a little rest this week,” he said, “but I’m not going to change anything up. But I can’t wait.”

Maryanski, who cleared 6-11 at the Kane County meet earlier this month, keeps a similarly cool demeanor.

With Cadets throws coach Eddie DeGeeter officiating the shot put, Juriga had one more familiar face in his periphery once he went to throw.

When a stray put hit DeGeeter in the head early in the competition, Juriga, a Batavia resident by way of St. Charles, scrambled to find his Luke Juriga center after DeGeeter was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Much like his coach, who is expected to make a full recovery, Juriga rallied to win the shot put and advance to Friday’s 3A state preliminaries in Charleston, throwing a personal-best 51 feet, 6 inches on his final put.

“It was kind of weird not having coach there and kind of crazy, but once I started throwing, I just tried to forget about it,” Juriga said.

Juriga was competing in discus at the other side of Elgin’s Memorial Field when DeGeeter was injured.

A Haines Middle School alumnus whose family now lives in Batavia, Juriga admitted it will take some adjusting to prepare for a meet in which he throws in only one event.

“It’s kind of different because you’re just throwing one,” Juriga said. “This year I was probably better at the shot put because I was usually so mad after throwing discus.”

Unfortunately for the Cogs, Knights pitcher Angie Morrow one-upped her counterpart in the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinals, striking out 10 Cogs in a 1-0, complete-game victory.

Second-seeded Kaneland (20-11) advances to the regional final at 10 a.m. Saturday and will face top-seeded Burlington Central, where Morrow played her first two seasons before transferring to Kaneland.

“She just threw strikes.

I don’t know how many 0-2 counts she had but it was a bunch,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said. “So that puts a

hitter in a difficult situation, when they have to watch her stuff coming in at 0-2, 1-2. It just gives her the big advantage in that situation.”

Ullmark allowed six hits in the circle. She walked two, struck out five and was able to get out of pressure situations for the third-seeded Cogs.

“My drop curve was working pretty well. I think my speed got them,” Ullmark said. “But, so did [Morrow]’s.

She had that movement where we just couldn’t get ahold of it.”

Kaneland got its only run on a weird play in the top of the third. With two outs and Morgan Weber on third, Lanie Callaghan on second and Lexi Roach at the plate, G-K (16-12) catcher Paige Keegan saw Callaghan getting a big lead off second.

mark, Keegan fired the ball toward second baseman Katie Thurlby and it looked like Callaghan would be out, but the throw was a little low and Thurlby couldn’t come up with it cleanly. Weber sprinted home and beat Thurlby’s throw for the only run of the contest.

“It was something Paige sees, she’s done that before

and gotten people out, and it was a good throw, and we just didn’t catch the ball first,” G-K coach Mike Lauer said. “Would have been out of the inning. [Thurlby] just didn’t have the ball, so tough break.”

As soon as he saw the ball hit the ground, Willis told Weber to take off.

“She’s our leadoff hitter and very fast, so I thought she could make it,” Willis said.

Morrow gave up only three hits, two of which came courtesy of Kendyl Strack and the other from Thurlby.

The Cogs had a runner on second with one out in the first, fourth and sixth innings, but couldn’t get the big hit.

Weber finished 2 for 3 for Kaneland.

Callaghan, Hayley Contorno, Morrow and Caroline Heimerdinger had the Knights’ other hits.

Rudelich’s jump at county meet good for fifth • TRACK Continued from page 25 “I just jump. I just show up and jump,” he said. “Whatever happens.”

For Rudelich, the latter part of that equation wasn’t adding up as much as he had liked before this season. He saluted his progression from his first days as a high jumper – clearing 4-6 as a Rotolo Middle School seventh-grader – and had pushed his PR to 6-0 by the end of a junior season hampered by an ankle injury.

In the offseason, Rudelich became an ardent follower of what he called “just simple stuff,” which amounted to many summer hours of weight training and running at or around school.

In his final outdoor season, he finished fifth at both the Kane County meet (6-5) and Upstate Eight Conference meet (6-1), coming in slightly behind Majka both times. The Bulldogs enjoyed team success, too, finishing second at the county meet and winning the UEC River title.

Once Rudelich arrived at Elgin, he focuses on his objective one more time.

“This year, I just thought to myself, ‘I want to go to state,’ ” Rudelich said after helping Batavia finish second at the sectional. “So I spent the whole offseason doing training and spent a lot of time training and working out for it, and really, really working towards it.”

Loebel, a Nebraska recruit, is among five four-year varsity players on a Geneva team that will lose 11 seniors.

Owens credited the deep senior class for helping the program “soar,” and Loebel is proud of the way the Vikings senior led the team.

“No drama, no negativity – we were all such a close-knit group, and not just the seniors, but everyone,” Loebel said. “You’d think for the underclassmen it’d be difficult for them to fit in but we were all just so welcoming. This was the closest team I’ve been with all four years.”

HOFFMAN ESTATES – A late response from the Geneva girls soccer team wasn’t enough for the Vikings, not on a night when few of the breaks seemed to go their way.

Geneva dropped Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional semifinal, 3-1, after a sluggish start forced the Vikings into catch-up mode throughout the second half.

“To be a solid team in the playoffs you’ve got to be a first-half team, and we just weren’t that today,” Geneva coach Megan Owens said. “We just waited. I think the nerves got to us a little bit and we just struggled a little bit mentally.

Once we were down, 2-0, man, we showed up to play, but it was too late.”

Conant (15-4-2), the sectional’s No. 2 seed, advances to Friday’s 4 p.m. sectional final against fourth-seeded St. Charles East.

Marquette-bound Conant junior Leah Celarek scored two of the Cougars’ three goals. She had the lone goal

2-0, on Zoe Shoro’s poked-in rebound with 27:25 to play in the second half, the Vikings played their sharpest stretch of the match.

Loebel had a pair of breakaway opportunities a few minutes apart, the first of which she clanked off the crossbar before cashing in the second off Taylor Williams’ assist.

“I felt their sweeper coming on me, and my mind was on her during my shot,” Loebel said of the first breakaway.

“I knew when I shot it I wasn’t really focusing on the goal.

I was focusing on get it off my feet. I wasn’t in the right mindset.

“And then the second one, I wasn’t thinking. It was just kind of a reflex.”

While Geneva (15-6-2) caught a tough break when Loebel’s first attempt caromed off, Conant’s third goal – with only 4:23 left to play – came after Celarek’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar and dropped down, apparently crossing the goal line in the process.

But Owens recognized that misfortune only was partial-

Local athletes relished ride with Waubonsee Reaching the pinnacle of your sport is great.

Doing it two years in a row is excellent.

Doing it with people you’ve known your whole life is really special.

The Waubonsee Community College baseball team returned from its second straight appearance in the Division-III Junior College World Series with a fourthplace finish.

And while the guys all say they wanted to bring home a national championship, it’s starting to sink in for shortstop Tyler Heinle and pitcher Jordan Jones – a pair of Kaneland alumni – that they’ve accomplished something quite remarkable.

Together.

Again.

“I’ve played with Tyler Heinle since as long as I can remember,” Jones said.

“We won a state championship together, and then coming here [to the World Series] twice. It’s always fun. All the Yorkville kids, we always played against them, they were in our same conference. So to be on the same team and to share it with them, there’s no better feeling.”

“We’ve been pretty good friends as well as teammates,” Heinle said. “I’m glad that we chose Waubonsee and stuck together.”

As Jones mentioned, this isn’t just for lifelong teammates. It’s a great moment for former adversaries, as well.

Waubonsee’s roster is chock full of former Yorkville Foxes, a Geneva Viking, a St. Charles North North Star and a Batavia Bulldog.

“It’s fun because we were all competitive in high

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber school, kind of talking trash and all the normal stuff. And then being put on the same team, it brought us closer, and I think we all clicked pretty good,” said catcher Jay Clark, the Batavia grad, who elaborated on just how close the old rivals became.

“Everyone just came together on weekends, just going fishing, hanging out, getting together at the apartments, watching movies.

Just being a team.”

Seeing this is nothing new for Dave Randall, the Waubonsee coach who in his last year at the helm reached his fourth World Series (third in five seasons), set a program record with 39 wins and finished with 895

career victories, the second most all-time among coaches at nonscholarship junior colleges.

“We get that a lot in all our sports,” he said. “East Aurora, West Aurora kids come out and play together after their big rivalry in Aurora. And then you’ve got the Geneva-Batavia rivalry, you’ve got the Yorkville and Kaneland rivalry. It’s all over the place in high school. But it doesn’t matter.

You put them all on the same team ... do they joke, laugh and talk about it? Oh yeah, it’s all part of their background.

“But we’re in it for the same thing, we have the same goals, we all want to be good. If we can help each other win, all that stuff goes out the window real quick.

“I’ve had kids who go, ‘I hated him in high school, I hated them.’ A few weeks

later they go, ‘I hated that guy, and now we’re good friends.’ So that’s just the way it is.”

While getting to the World Series would have been a huge moment for these players regardless of which names were above and below theirs on the roster, sharing the moment with longtime teammates and longtime opponents makes everything more enjoyable – and memorable.

“Growing up with these kids and playing against them, getting on the same team,” Jones said, “I think it makes it a lot more special.”

ELMHURST – Good thing there’ll be someone emceeing the Batavia baseball banquet tonight.

Transitioning any conversation in B-Town figures to border on the impossible otherwise.

How could the Bulldogs not exhaust every one of their tired, manic and elated words on Wednessday’s Class 4A York Regional semifinal?

Top-seeded Batavia pondered the potentially dooming reality of a second straight postseason upset loss more than once against No. 15 Bartlett.

Through it all, they persevered.

As center fielder Laren Eustace scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th, handing the Bulldogs a 5-4 win, bedlam officially ensued.

“We thought we were down, but we really wanted it. We didn’t want another last year,” senior left fielder Reagan McReynolds said. “So I’m glad we can come out and compete.”

Winners of 21 straight, Batavia (30-3-1) matched the single-season school record for victories, and will try to eclipse it in Saturday’s regional final against either York or Willowbrook, which meet in a semifinal today.

The chance to reset – the score, the situation, their psyches – arguably entices the Bulldogs most. Many heroic efforts enabled them to get there, namely senior third baseman Micah Coffey’s twostrike RBI double to tie the game at 4 in the bottom of the eighth after Bartlett rallied for a pair of runs in the top half.

Coffey also singled home two runs in the bottom of the first, a hit that proved to be rare paydirt as Batavia stranded nine runners through the first four innings and 13 overall.

“It can be frustrating when you know you’re hitting the ball hard, you’re getting guys

on base, getting base runners and you’re not scoring,” Eustace said. “From the beginning of the first inning, I thought, ‘Oh, we’re going to win by a lot.’ But then they shut us down. We left guys on base, missed a lot of opportunities.”

As each lost chance mounted, the Bulldogs turned their thoughts to the 2013 regional semifinals, when Bartlett was the setting for Hoffman Estates’ upset win against second-seeded Batavia.

“It always creeps in your mind,” Bulldogs coach Matt Holm said. “I mean, I’m standing out there, 4-2, going, ‘Are you kidding me?’ you know.

But I’ve asked these guys to do one thing this year, and that’s compete. And they keep that thought in mind and they never gave up.”

McReynolds’ perfect throw to nab Hawks catcher Jordan Flint at the plate to end the top of the 10th offered the Bulldogs the last clean slate they needed.

Doug VanDyke, pitching in relief after starting Bartlett’s regional quarterfinal Monday, smacked a hard-hit single to the left side, and McReynolds recovered to field a funny hop cleanly.

“Do or die. That’s it. That’s all I was thinking,” McReynolds said. “I was like, ‘Gotta make the throw, or else we’re going home.’ ” First baseman Jacob Piechota, who started on the mound and pitched five-plus innings, quickly joined the mob in front of the Batavia dugout after the play.

“It doesn’t matter who was running,” Piechota said.

“McReynolds made one of the greatest throws I’ve ever seen him make.”

Piechota also stood in the batter’s box as VanDyke uncorked a wild first-pitch curveball with Eustace on third.

Eustace hit a ground-rule double to lead off the 10th and had three hits. Andrew Siegler had three hits, and Matt Puttin and Piechota added two apiece.

Holding a 2-1 lead against Glenbard East in the bottom of the sixth inning, the North Stars scored eight runs after having three successful bunts without recording an out.

The big inning led North to a 10-5 victory over Glenbard East in the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles North Regional semifinal. A combination of a stiff wind blowing in, along with scouting of the Rams led to an abundance of bunts from

North.

“It’s something we try and do all the time,” Genke said.

“We can hit with the best of them, we can small ball with the best of them. It’s just another weapon the other team has to defend.”

North starting pitcher Frankie Farry scattered seven hits in five-plus innings of work and gave up one unearned run.

Farry was pulled in the sixth inning clutching to a 2-1 lead in favor of Cory Wright.

The junior struck out the first hitter he faced and induced an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

The Saints were seeded second in the sectional while Hoffman Estates was ranked No. 16.

Hoffman Estates solved Saints starter Adam Eck early, opening the game with three consecutive singles in the first inning, while Ward held East in check with no walks and nine hits scattered over seven innings “We knew they were a good team and they came out and played a very good ball game and we just didn’t match it,” said East coach Les Asquini.

Boehmer gave up a fourth single, which scored the fourth run, before getting the Saints out of the inning.

“Unfortunately, it was a bad time for a bad outing.

He [Eck] has not thrown like that all year,” Asquini said.

“Boehmer came in and threw

great and kept us close, keeping the score right there at four.”

East threatened several times in the game but was unable to get clutch hits. The Saints left men in scoring position in three separate innings.

“We got some guys on and had some scoring opportunities but boy [Ward] got some big outs with some of our better hitters,” said Asquini.

East scored its only run in the fifth inning. Brannon Barry scored from second base on Ben Smith’s single.

Alex Abate had the most success against Ward, going 3 for 4. His double in the seventh was East’s only extra base hit of the day.

“Being a senior and realizing that this is the play offs and it’s coming close to the end of my baseball career I was really dialed in,” said Abate.

Wright was limited to one inning pitched because he’s slated to start in North’s next appearance Saturday.

“I really was hoping I wouldn’t have to use him at all today,” Genke said. “He’s such a competitor. Every inning, he’s telling me, ‘Coach, I’m ready.’ But it was nice to only have to use him for one inning.”

Young, a junior, scattered four walks and nine strikeouts as the 10-21 Royals advanced to face the host Indians for the title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“Elayne Young really had a nice game for us tonight,” Royals coach John Kazmierczak said. “We came out hitting the ball pretty well tonight. We supported her with a lot of defense and a lot of hits.”

Rosary had 10 hits and seized early control with a five-run second after the Warriors (14-11) scored a first-inning run. Marissa Gagliano, who reached with a leadoff walk, scored on an infield error.

‘Documented’: A journalist turned advocate

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post There’s a lot of talk of plans in “Documented,” Jose Antonio Vargas’s excellent new film relating the process of his “coming out” as an undocumented American, as he puts it. Vargas, a journalist who worked at The Washington Post from 2004 to 2009, revealed in a widely read New York Times magazine article how he came to this country illegally from the Philippines as the age of 12. Since then, he has advocated for immigration reform that would enable people like him, who feel wholly American despite the absence of legal paperwork, to have a path to citizenship.

As Vargas tells it, when his mother packed him off in 1993 to live with his grandparents, who had legally emigrated a decade earlier to the San Francisco Bay area, the plan was that he would ultimately work at a menial job, just like his “Lolo” and “Lola” did – not win a Pulitzer Prize, as happened while working at The Post. The plan was also that he would eventually gain citizenship by marrying an American woman. Coming out as gay in high school threw a monkey wrench in those designs.

“Documented” begins in 2011, on the eve of publication of The Times article, with Vargas strategizing about how to spin his story. For the most part, the filmmaker comes across as open, unguarded and honest. But let’s be real. He’s being recorded by a camera crew, day and night. That entails a certain self-consciousness that puts him, both as filmmaker and the film’s subject, in the odd position of watching and being watched. He’s both the fly on the wall and the sugar bowl.

Still, “Documented” never feels false or forced, just hyper-aware. This comfort with living in public may be as much a function of Vargas’ age (he’s 33) as his temperament. As a reporter, Vargas covered technology and social media, among other beats.

Of course, the film, like The Times article, is a calculation. By publicly acknowledging his immigration status, Vargas risks deportation. But his gamble is that the attention he draws to himself will only decrease the odds of being sent back to the Philippines, not increase them. As he is trying

A young Jose Vargas is pictured with his mother, whom Vargas hasn’t seen since he emigrated from the Philippines to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. to remain in the United States by remaining in the spotlight, Vargas is also, it seems, utterly sincere about wanting to raise awareness about the issue of immigration reform.

“I’m in this to have some sort of

impact,” he says, with conviction.

And what impact might that be? As agenda-driven as “Documented” is, it also is a deeply engrossing self-portrait. If 11 million undocumented Americans are a statistic, one, if shown in the right light, is a tragedy.

One of the most moving scenes in the film shows Vargas having a Skype conversation with his mother, who still lives in the Philippines, and whom he has not seen since he was 12.

The scene makes an effective argument that there’s something wrong with a system that separates a son from his mother (whom Vargas can’t visit without fear of being unable to return to the United States).

The scene is well planned. There’s a camera crew in America, filming Vargas in the middle of the night, and one in the Philippines, filming his mother. Even though we know that it’s designed to wrench at our heartsrings, eavesdropping on this conversation has surprising – even overwhelming – power to move.

Whether it also changes minds is another matter.

• “Documented” received threeand-a-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains brief obscenity.

It runs 89 minutes.

Corticosteroids reduce inflammation of eczema Dear Doctor K: My 21-monthold daughter has eczema. Is there any way to treat this condition without steroids?

Dear Reader: Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is more than just dry skin. It is an inflammatory skin disease that often begins in infancy as an intensely itchy rash. Scratching leads to further irritation.

The injured skin becomes chronically inflamed and more vulnerable to infection.

Airborne allergens can make eczema worse. Reducing your daughter’s exposure to these triggers could improve her eczema and reduce her need for treatment: • Remove carpets and heavy draperies from her sleeping area.

• Wash her bedding frequently in hot water.

• Clean and vacuum frequently.

• Regularly bathe pets and keep them out of her bedroom.

• Avoid foods (such as milk, eggs, soy or wheat) if they trigger your daughter’s eczema.

Skin affected by eczema loses water easily. Keep your daughter’s skin hydrated by soaking it in warm (not hot) baths. Don’t use soaps and shampoos, which worsen dry skin, more than twice a week.

If these measures don’t control your daughter’s eczema, her doctor will likely recommend a topical corticosteroid to apply to her skin.

Corticosteroid creams and ointments effectively reduce inflammation. They are one of the most important types of medicines to be developed in the past 50 years. Eczema is just one of the many diseases and conditions that can be effectively treated by these medicines.

Corticosteroids often are called just “steroids” by doctors. But don’t be confused: These inflammation-fighting

hormones are different from the “steroids” that body builders use.

Corticosteroid creams can gradually thin the skin and cause small blood vessels to break if used on the face. So, use them with caution, and in low doses, on the face – as directed by your daughter’s doctor.

You may have heard that corticosteroids can stunt a child’s growth and thin the bones. That’s an issue with corticosteroid pills (or injections), but not with corticosteroid creams and ointments – unless extraordinary amounts are used over much of the body.

As with any medicine, corticosteroids have both benefits and risks.

You should discuss with your daughter’s doctor what the balance of benefits and risks is likely to be in her case, and I’m sure you’ll be able to find the right treatment.

Fortunately, your daughter has available effective treatments that had not yet been developed two generations ago.

birthday plans for date

Dr. Wallace: Christy is my best friend, and we are almost like twin sisters. For over a year now the two of us have gone to a movie on Friday night and for a snack afterward. We always have a great time together and my boyfriend knows that every Friday is “girl’s night out,” so he plans a “guy’s night out” or a “family event” for himself. This works perfectly for us.

My problem is that last Friday was Christy’s 17th birthday and she knew I had planned “something.” My plan was dinner reservations (my treat) at a nice restaurant where they would include a cupcake/candle and the waiters were going to sing “Happy Birthday.”

I had a small gift for her and then we were to see our weekly movie.

I thought she would enjoy this special treat, but it didn’t happen.

About half an hour before we were to meet she called my cellphone and left a message, “Hi Jenny, Corey called me 10 minutes ago and invited me to go with him to a fraternity party and I said yes. I know you will understand since you know what a big crush I have on him. Love ya!”

Well, I guess I really don’t understand because this made me pretty upset. I think she ought to have told this guy that she already had plans to celebrate her birthday with her best friend, and I’m sure you will agree.

But now I need your advice. Should I discuss the situation with her and tell her I thought she was rude to ditch our plans for a short-notice date or should I just pretend that “I understand”

Today’s deal is an example of this. South is in three no-trump.

West leads the heart three and declarer calls for dummy’s five.

What should East do?

The auction was straightforward. South did not like to open one no-trump without a heart stopper, but the bid gave as accurate a description of his hand as possible. Yes, he might have opened one diamond, planning to rebid one spade over a one-heart response, but partner would have had a much fuzzier picture of South’s hand. The only makable game here is four spades, which is tough to reach.

Let’s return to East’s predicament. If South has ace-doubleton of hearts, East must put in his 10, finessing against partner (this week’s theme). But if South has jack-doubleton, East must win with his king. Which is correct?

Get into South’s mind. If he had ace-doubleton, which heart would he have played from the board?

Right – the queen. He would have hoped the opening lead was away from the king and tried to take a second heart trick. When he does not do that, he cannot have the heart ace.

So East should confidently put up his king, expecting to win the trick. And five heart tricks later, the contract is down.

Home Front: The collector’s edition THE WASHINGTON POST Mary Randolph Carter, author of “Never Stop to Think ... Do I Have a Place for This?,” was the guest last week on Post staff writer Jura Koncius’ Home Front online chat. Here is an edited excerpt.

Koncius: Now that I am finally through the winter doldrums, I am going to attack the beautiful sunroom in my new house. I have collected a decent amount of Mexican art (statues, paintings, vases) and need some ideas on how to best display them. I also will use decorative ceramic pots for the plants.

I would appreciate any display tips and paint color suggestions.

Carter: Collecting is always associated with memory, and you have some great ones. With a sunroom you start with the most valuable asset of all, beautiful light.

The ceramic pots sound so exotic for your plants. For those Mexican art treasures, perhaps find a wonderful hanging wooden shelf in a great color to display them.

I’m not sure how many walls you have in the sunroom, but I love pedestals for showing off a special statue or clustering them all together on a little table, an altar to your love of these things.

For texture, you could find a great old raffia rug or several. I would keep the background colors simple so your plants and collections stand out. Every wall in my house is white but covered with paintings and photos and maps and prints.

Koncius: What constitutes a collection?

Carter: There are probably as many answers to this

question as there are collectors, but I’ll take a stab and say, once you’ve got three of anything you’re on your way.

Koncius: When is money a roadblock to owning something that you think you can’t live without?

Carter: Oh that wretched subject – money. Thank goodness there’s so much great stuff out there that if you fall in love with something you can’t (or shouldn’t) afford, just wait a while and you’ll find something just as good that fits your pocketbook.

Koncius: How have the Internet and eBay changed collecting?

Carter: The Internet has changed the world at large, and in particular, junking and hunting for the things we love. My friend and fellow collector Tom Judd (featured in my new book) swears by the online hunt. He has had great luck finding handwritten recipes, diner menus, old botanical prints and fragments of vintage wallpaper. He layers them into his beautiful collages and never looks back.

Koncius: I am interested in adding brass to our decor as accent pieces. What are the best options for incorporating this? Does it matter that we do not currently have anything that is brass?

Carter: You’re so lucky if you’re starting on a new journey of collecting brass. I once collected all these old brass trays. I think I shared them in my first “American Junk” book. I just looked them up; they were hammered brass wall plaques depicting scenes of skaters waltzing, ships at sea, fruits and flowers, Dutch
