Kathleen King’s husband, Shadwick King, was convicted March 16 of first-degree murder in her death. She was 32.

Shadwick King, 47, will next be in court Aug. 5 for a hearing on arguments for a new trial, according to court records. The Kings lived in Geneva with their three sons, who are all between the ages of 6 and 10.

Preservation ordinance discussion postponed

Summer reading program to begin

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After more than two hours of public comment Tuesday on proposed changes to the city’s Historic Preservation Ordinance, Geneva aldermen postponed their discussion to a special Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday.

The committee meeting will follow the regular Geneva City Council meeting. Mayor Kevin Burns said the special meeting will give aldermen time to discuss the issues.

Because public comment went on until nearly 10 p.m.

Tuesday, Burns called for the meeting to end and discussion to resume on another date.

At issue will be owner consent to having a property landmarked, fees, suspension of work and the possibility of forming a neighborhood conservation district.

The city’s ordinance had not been revised since 1995, officials said.

ELBURN – The Town and Country Public Library’s summer reading program begins Monday.

This year’s theme is “Read to the Rhythm.”

The program runs through Aug. 8.

The library will once again have prizes from local donors to award to those who participate in the program.

Readers from pre-school through high school and adults with a valid Town and Country Public Library card are eligible to participate.

Tejas Shyamsundar, a fifth-grader at Lincoln Elementary School in Hoffman Estates, was the regional spelling bee champion in March and advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Tejas did not score well enough Wednesday to be one of the 50 spellers advancing to the semifinals.

Shyam Shyamsundar said his son only had been studying the Webster’s Dictionary words used in the national bee for two months, and he was competing against students who have been preparing for a year or more.

“He’ll have much better shot at it next year,” Shyamsundar said.

The Shyamsundars still are enjoying their time in Washington, D.C. Tejas’ parents, his sister, Hridya, and their grandparents joined him on the trip and they plan to watch the remainder of the national bee.

Tejas’ regional spelling bee win in St. Charles included a seven-day trip sponsored

by Camp Commotion and the Kane County Chronicle to the national bee.

Tajas knows at least one of his potential competitors when the local spelling bees begin again next year. The next school year is when his sister will be old enough to participate in the bees, Shyamsundar said.

Sheriff’s Office budget to be reduced by another $500K Cuts stem from Kramer’s decision to reduce number of federal inmates

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will be cut by another $500,000 to address the remainder of the

forfeited revenue from the federal inmate program.

Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer’s budget has been under scrutiny since January, when Kane County Board members learned Kramer re-

duced the number of federal inmates at the Kane County Jail. The program with the U.S. Marshals Service was expected to generate more than $2 million in revenue.

Kane County Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told board members at Wednesday’s Kane County Board Finance and Budget Committee meeting that

Kramer has agreed to the cuts.

A few of the more notable cuts include $126,700 in fuel for vehicles, $107,000 in healthcare contribution, $35,900 in vehicle repair and maintenance and $39,900 for medical, dental and hospital services.

In response to the forfeiture of revenue, the Kane County Board approved an ordinance in February reducing

the Sheriff’s Office budget by $225,000. In March, the board approved a second ordinance reducing the Sheriff’s Office budget by an additional $1.5 million, leaving $500,000 of the forfeited revenue remaining to be addressed.

Kramer was elected as sheriff in November. Former Sheriff Pat Perez retired after eight years in office.

LOCAL BRIEFS Parts of Anderson Road to be closed Tuesday ELBURN – Anderson Road, between Prairie Valley and Route 38, will close to all traffic Tuesday for the re-alignment of the new Anderson Road. This section of Anderson Road is scheduled to re-open before school starts in August.

The Kane County Board’s finance and budget committee on Wednesday supported a resolution authorizing an agreement between Kane County and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The agreement calls for the county to retain the services of an architectural historian to conduct an architectural survey of the

area and update the National Register of Historic nominations for the Geneva Historic District, the North Geneva Historic District and the Central Geneva Historic District.

Kane County plans to sell the building to the Geneva Public Library District for $1.5 million as a site for a new library. According to the agreement, demolition of the Sixth Street School may occur upon the acceptance of a contract between Kane County and the architectural historian selected to conduct the survey. The work is expected to cost $21,000, to be paid from a project contingency fund of $38,100.

man Chris Lauzen railed against the additional cost, calling it “unnecessary.” The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency previously had sent a letter telling county architects Cordogan Clark and Associates to consider alternatives to demolishing the building, which was built in 1924 and 1925.

The building currently houses the Kane County Regional Office of Education, which will be moved, officials have said. The planned demolition is expected to cost $447,100, which includes an estimated cost of $28,000 for the removal of an underground storage tank and the $38,100 project contingency.

SUGAR GROVE – Fourththrough eighth-grade students in Kaneland School District 302 will have additional opportunities for STEM learning in the fall.

Kaneland’s school board heard details on plans for the district’s participation in the Illinois Math and Science Academy Fusion program.

The after-school program will offer enrichment in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and math. At their meeting Wednesday night, board members approved a fee of $200 for students participating in the program.

The sessions would start on Sept. 21. The board heard from Sarah Mumm, the district’s director of educational services for kindergarten through fifth grade, on details of the program.

There would be two sessions, which will be at Harter Middle School, at 1601 Esker Drive in Sugar Grove.

Sessions for sixth- through eighth-grade students would be from 3 to 4:45 p.m. on designated days. Sessions for fourth- and fifth-graders would run from 5 to 6:45 p.m.

The maximum would be 25 for each session. Mumm said if interest exceeds that, district officials might seek additional sessions.

The district would provide a total of 64 hours of student contact time, with sessions held Monday and Thursday nights. Teachers would receive a $1,500 stipend. The district also would provide supplies.

On its website, the IMSA Fusion program is described as “a teacher professional development and student STEM enrichment program for Illinois students who are talented, interested and motivated in mathematics and science.”

Mumm said the district was approved to host the sessions. Board members were on board with the sessions.

Board member Ryan Kerry asked about the price, saying he didn’t see a definitive

number for participation in the program.

“How much does all this cost?” Kerry asked.

Mumm said there would be some variables, saying the cost of some of the program was unknown. For instance, she said the cost of “consumables” could range from $6,000 to $9,000. She said some of the cost would be covered by the $200 fee, but that likely would not cover all of the cost.

Board member Veronica Bruhl asked if there would be a minimum number for participation in the pro-

gram. Mumm said she was told IMSA “would run it with one.” She said the lowest total any district had in the program was eight. Board members discussed establishing a minimum. Board member Cheryl Krauspe said it’s likely too early in the effort to be concerned about that.

“It feels premature to me, to set a low limit,” Krauspe said, adding there was plenty of time to advertise about the program’s availability.

Mumm said officials could continue to provide updates as more details become available.

GENEVA – An employee of a Geneva massage parlor has been charged with prostitution after an undercover investigation by the Geneva Police Department, according to a news release.

The release indicated Aurora resident Lifa Jiang, 39, was arrested Wednesday at Foot and Body Massage, 629 W. State Lifa Jiang St., Geneva.

Responding to an email seeking details, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote Jiang had offered illegal services in addition to a massage.

According to the release, police received reports from

two citizens about possible suspicious activity at the location. Nash wrote the investigation had been going on for about a month, culminating in the arrest.

She wrote police have not received similar complaints about any other business.

She added citizens didn’t have specific concerns, other than suspected activity based on observations.

Jiang was arrested at 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the release, and Jiang was charged with one misdemeanor count of prostitution. Her next court date is set for 8:30 a.m. June 16.

Police determined there was illegal activity taking place in the massage parlor, and they then obtained a search warrant, according to the release. There was no further information available about the items seized in the search.

GENEVA – Starting next week, residents will be able to go to a new website to find out about the finances of Kane County.

The website kanecountyil.opengov.com is set to go live on Monday, Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt told county board members at Wednesday’s Kane County Board Finance and Budget Committee meeting. Hunt gave them a sneak preview of the website.

“We want to provide greater financial information,” Hunt told board members. “We want to have it easier to get to. It’s all geared toward being user-friendly.”

Opengov.com is a cloudbased financial transparency website for agencies and local governments. The software costs $12,500 a year, Hunt said.

Hunt said the general public will have access to four different reports – the

county’s annual report, current fiscal year results, quarterly report history and an online checkbook.

“For each report, there are saved views, which answer frequently asked questions,” Hunt said.

For example, under the annual report, residents can find answers to such questions as what are Kane County’s total revenues and expenses, and how are those revenues divided by department.

Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, lauded the effort.

“This is a phenomenal tool for our taxpayers,” she said. “It is an opportunity to see government in action and be transparent.”

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen also voiced his support for the new website.

“I am very grateful and proud of the work that has been done here,” Lauzen said. “We are really inviting participation.”

The mall’s double-decker Italian carousel was bought for an undisclosed price this month, said Chuck May, project director of The Quad St. Charles redevelopment of the mall.

“There is a business for used carousels,” May said Wednesday. “It’s not constant, but people have needs for them.”

Sun Valley, California-based Brass Ring Carousel Co. is handling the sale for the actual buyer, and the carousel’s new home likely will be in a mall located in another country, May said.

Workers on Tuesday afternoon began taking down the carousel piece by piece until only its frame remained standing Wednesday morning, said Nicole Kneeland-Woods, director of business development at the mall.

Can employers help to shrink smoking’s income gap

By PETER ORSZAG Bloomberg News The income gap between smokers and nonsmokers has grown. And it’s something companies may need to address directly in their efforts to help employees kick the habit.

Over the past several decades, smoking rates have fallen sharply among high-income, highly educated Americans and not as much for less educated, low-income people.

The good news is the financial incentives many companies are considering – and some are now using – to help people quit smoking can work, as a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows.

The researchers randomly assigned employees of CVS Caremark and their relatives and friends to different groups, which were given various financial incentives to stop smoking.

The results were encour-

aging. People who were told they would receive an individual bonus of $800 for quitting stopped at almost three times the rate of those not offered any direct financial inventive. Behavioral theory generally suggests, though, that loss aversion would work even better.

In other words, if subjects made an initial deposit that they would stand to lose if they failed to quit, that would provide an even stronger incentive. And that was indeed the case, the researchers found, but people had to be willing to make the deposit in the first place.

And because many were not willing to do that, the bonus approach was more effective overall.

These findings were widely reported in the news, but one thing went largely – if not entirely – unnoticed: A table in the appendix to the study showed that, for each of the four kinds of interventions studied, the share of high-income smokers who

quit – those earning $60,000 or more – was larger than that of lower-income smokers. The reason, according to the study’s lead author, is that lower-income smokers were less willing to participate under any of the incentive programs offered. That was true despite the bonus or deposit being the same dollar amount for everyone, and therefore a higher share of income for lower-paid workers.

It is reasonable to be concerned about the gap in smoking rates by socioeconomic status, which is one of the forces widening the gaps in life expectancy by education and income. To reverse this trend, disproportionately larger dollar bonuses may be needed to get lower earners to quit.

Craft spirits all the rage at Niche restaurant Geneva business boasts more than 300 craft spirits

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With more than 300 craft spirits on hand, Niche restaurant at 14 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva is carving out a niche in the craft spirits industry.

“We have the craft spirits to compete with, I would say, anyone in the state,” said Niche general manager Vince Balistreri.

Just like there has been a surge in interest in craft beers over the past few years, craft spirits are enjoying a newfound popularity these days. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, the spirits industry enjoyed steady growth in 2014. Overall retail sales of distilled spirits in the U.S. market were nearly $70 billion last year, the council reported.

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States is the national trade association representing the leading producers and marketers of distilled spirits in the U.S. “Consumer interest in industry innovations and premium products from distilled spirits producers of all sizes contributed to another year of steady growth in 2014,” Distilled Spirits Council President and CEO Peter Cressy said in a statement. “In the U.S. market, strong consumer interest in cocktails, along with continuing market access and modernization improvements, is providing the industry with a solid base for future growth.”

Balistreri attributed the rise in popularity of craft spirits to the economic crash a few years back.

“People want more bang for their buck,” he said. “It’s like a hobby that’s not as expensive. It’s more affordable.”

Fox River Distilling Company recently won a bronze medal for its Geneva Preservation Gin at the 15th annual San Francisco World Spirits Competition, “Craft spirits are definitely the new thing,” Balistreri said.

Balistreri has a background in the restaurant business.

He studied culinary arts and restaurant management at Elgin Community College and has served as a private restaurant consultant. He also is a member of the Court of Master Sommeliers, an internationally recognized group for individuals in the beverage sales and service fields.

“Spirits and beer and wine are my hobby,” Balistreri said. “I’m constantly reading, seeing what’s going on in New York, seeing what’s going on in France, seeing what’s going on in San Francisco.

The big cities are kind of where you see the trends happen, especially outside of the Midwest.”

Niche carries such well-renowned bourbon brands as Pappy Van Winkle. Balistreri said Niche is one of the few restaurants in the suburbs to carry the brand.

“They won’t increase production just to make more money,” Balistreri said. “It’s extremely limited. We carried Pappy Van Winkle before it blew up in popularity.”

Another respected brand Niche carries is Evan Williams Bourbon. Balistreri said he will decide what craft spirits to stock through tasting them and looking at their reputation.

“We have 175 beers, over 300 spirits and over 250 wines, and I try to know as much information as possible on every single thing that we carry,” Balistreri said.

Niche previously had been known primarily for its fine dining. But last year, the restaurant went into a new direction with a new menu and a new chef. Chris Ayukawa came aboard as executive chef after having previously worked at Niche as a sous chef for three years.

“We now have people who come in here for a burger and a beer and a bourbon to people who do the five-course tasting with a bottle of Dom Pérignon,” Balistreri said.

“Now it’s like the nice healthy balance.”

Virginie Saverys has taken her prized expression of sangiovese from Montepulciano on a tour through the United States and Italy.

Everywhere she goes the remarkable quality of the wine continues to be noticed. As we spoke via Skype, she was fresh off a scuba diving trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Like a diving expedition, her wines at Avignonesi reveal a new experience the deeper they are explored.

Winemaker spotlight The Grandi Annate is only made from the best lots in the best years.

It’s a flagship wine that is labor intensive when crafting, yet highly rewarding when revealed. In the Avignonesi Grandi Annate Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2011 ($95), Saverys has seen a decisive leap in quality.

“It’s a single vineyard wine that we’ve managed to make an amazing expression of Sangiovese with,” Saverys said. “We are consistent with the 2010, 2011 and 2012 wines.

But, despite being different vintages, there is still a red line, a common thread that runs through all of them.”

The vineyards used are 40 years old. Planted in low-density fashion, they have very low yields.

They’ve grown tall and each parcel is harvested separately by hand.

Harvest results in 65 to 70 different parcels of Sangiovese.

Fermented individually, Saverys begins to explore the vintage.

Will the just completed growing season produce a Grandi Annate?

Such a decision is made fairly early in a laborious tasting process. But it also needs further confirmation.

“We keep tasting the parcels,” Saverys said.

The 2011 Grandi Annate was a curious vintage, like 2010, when it wasn’t certain to be made. But in just five years, the wine has evolved and confirms the first impressions made during blind tasting sessions.

A nose of dried roses and cedar serve as an introduction for a wine that has a silky mouth feel. There are currant, plum and ripe blackberry flavors.

An underlying green or herbal note snap the mid-palate into focus and allows for a long, drawn finish where new spice, fruit and cedar notes are allowed to endure.

What to buy d’ Arenberg, The Custodian, McLaren Valley Grenache 2011 ($19.99) When other Australian wineries pulled their grenache in favor of syrah and cabernet sauvignon in the 1980s, winemaker d’Ary Osborn stayed loyal to the variety. The old, bush-trained vines yield an interesting wine to explore. The fresh floral aroma serves as a pleasant introduction.

There are mulled raspberry, cinnamon stick and strawberry flavored tea notes. The flavors are very latent here; nothing is too obvious, which furthers the intrigue.

St. Charles Singers to mix art, folk songs during final concerts PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – In June, the St. Charles Singers’ final concerts of the 2014-15 season will feature a choral arrangement of folk songs from the British Isles and North America.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles.

Over the course of two different concert programs, entitled “Bushes and Briars,” the professional chamber choir – conducted by its founder and music director, Jeffrey Hunt – will perform 25 works from the two-volume collection “Folk-Songs for Choirs,” which includes traditional songs from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the U.S. and Canada.

The volumes were edited by renowned contemporary English choirmaster and composer John Rutter and published by the Oxford University Press, states a news release.

The June 13 concert will feature the complete “FolkSongs for Choirs 1,” and the June 14 concert will feature “Folk-Songs for Choirs 2.”

In addition, the St. Charles Singers will perform the world premiere of a newly-commissioned work by one of its resident composers,

Nathaniel Adams of Chicago, states the release. The three-minute piece is an unaccompanied choral arrangement of singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell’s “I Don’t Know Where I Stand” from her 1969 album “Clouds.” The work will be sung at both concerts.

Artists also will create paintings during the performances.

For the first time, the choir has hired local artists to attend concerts and paint scenes inspired by the music. Greg Chapman will paint during the June 13 concert, and Robert Pennington will paint during the June 14 concert.

Each artist will work at an easel that will be visible to the concert audience.

“It’s as if the artists are silent members of the choir, expressing the music in acrylic paint and watercolor,” Hunt said in the release.

The paintings will be on view immediately after each concert.

General admission tickets for each concert cost $40 for adults, $30 for seniors ages 65 and older and $10 for students.

STC North rolls past Wheaton North

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com SCHAUMBURG – The St. Charles North girls soccer team just wanted to focus on its IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal against Wheaton North.

It didn’t matter that rival St. Charles East had lost its match, just before the North Stars took the field, because if they didn’t win their match, it meant nothing.

Freshman Gia Wahlberg scored two second-half goals to lead North past Wheaton North, 4-0, to advance to Saturday’s sectional championship against Conant.

“We came out fast in both halves,” North coach Ruth Vostal said of her team scoring goals in the first few minutes of each half.

“We knew where the spaces in their defense were and I think we didn’t execute as well as we could have in the first half. We refocused at halftime and said ‘Remember the runs we practiced?’ and I think the girls did a great job of putting that into action and finishing some great goals off.”

Hanna Durocher opened the scoring for North (20-2-2) less than three minutes into the game on a shot from the corner of the box, which Wheaton North coach Tim McEvilly thought his keeper never saw until it was past her.

The game stayed a one-goal advantage for the North Stars as Wheaton North fought back, but were answered by North’s backline.

Vostal credited everyone from her keeper, Shelby Stitz, to her midfielders and forwards checking back to help. A shutout at this point in the season, plus a decisive four-goal win, is something North can hang its hat on for the next few days.

“Our defensive effort was incredible,” Vostal said. “The teamwork and cover for one another was outstanding because we talked about that being something you have to do against a team like that with great forwards.”

They did a great job and it’s the first time my very young team actually looked like they were young, and that’s cred-

With just minutes remaining in the match, Stitz made a diving save, but came up injured on the play.

She left and did not return, but Vostal said she had a smile on her face, so the removal was more precautionary than anything with a four-goal lead.

North will have a few days off, game-wise, and will be ready to go for Conant on Saturday.

“We know what we have to do to be successful,” Neslund said.

“We are going to come out strong and continue to do the things that got us here. We are a very confident team with the way we are playing right now.”

Conant shocks East in sectional semi

The St. Charles East girls soccer team had been one of the top teams in the state heading into its IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal against Conant, but ran into a stingy Cougars team Wednesday.

Emily Mazurek broke a scoreless tie 12 minutes into the second half and Conant ended East’s season much earlier than expected, as the Saints fell, 1-0.

East (21-2-1) coach Paul Jennison thought a momentary lapse was the difference in allowing the game’s only goal.

“We spoke all week about moments and how years can come down to one second,” Jennison said. “There was only one second that we weren’t the better team out there today, and it went against us. We have to hold our hands up and take complete accountability because we had a number of chances to win this game.”

It seemed as if the Saints had Conant (15-6-1) right where they wanted it early in the contest.

East controlled almost the entire run of play, but Conant and goalkeeper Haley Anderson were able to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.

Darcy Cunningham had the best chance in each half for East, one stopped by Anderson at point-blank range only minutes into the contest and a shot off the crossbar in the second.

“We knew coming in that was the kind of game we had to play,” Conant coach Jason Franco said. “We couldn’t get in a shootout with [East] because they have so many skilled players at most positions. The game plan to keep it low scoring and catch them on a counter attack worked today.”

East continued to throw numbers forward and just could not find a way through the Conant defense.

Cunningham’s blast off the crossbar and a few chances for freshman Chantel Carranza were all the Saints could muster up as they were shut out for the first time this season.

But, despite an early end to East’s season, there will be no taking away from them how special of a season it was.

“I’ve never been part of a team where I felt like we could win every single game,” Cunningham said. “That’s how this team was, and even until the last second, I thought

we were going to find a way to win that game. We haven’t dominated every single game, but it’s been quite a ride and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

There was no hiding the disappointment from anyone in Saints attire after the loss Wednesday, especially Jen-

nison, who truly believes he coached the team state’s best team this year.

Although less talkative than usual after a game, Jennison knows what the girls accomplished this year and was “heartbroken” that it had to come to an end.

“We’ll learn from this, but I’m crushed and heartbroken for our seniors,” Jennison added. “The season as a whole has been spectacular. To only lose two games and to find yourselves going home after the first round of the sectional is a head-scratching moment for anyone. They deserve so much more than this, but that’s the playoffs ... you don’t always get what you deserve.”

Conant will take on St. Charles North at 6 p.m. in Saturday’s sectional championship at Schaumburg High School.

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com SCHAUMBURG – After throwing three shutout innings to begin the IHSA Class 4A Schaumburg Regional semifinal game against Streamwood, St. Charles North sophomore Tyler Mettetal began the fourth inning by hitting a batter and walking two more afterward.

The North Stars had a 3-0 lead to start the Tyler Mettetal fourth, but the team saw its lead diminish after two passed balls allowed two Sabres to score.

But Mettetal wasn’t fazed.

Rather, he saw it as an opportunity to pump himself up.

“It made me be more excited,” Mettetal said. “Like ‘Let’s go, we’re not giving up another run. I’m going to bear down and throw the ball past these guys.’ ” And Mettetal did. 15 times in

fact, as he led the North Stars to a 4-2 victory over the Sabres and a spot in Saturday’s regional championship at Schaumburg High School.

In addition to striking out 15 Sabres, Mettetal pitched a complete game and gave up only two runs. He also walked four batters and hit one.

“He did fight it a little bit,” coach Todd Genke said. “He kind of had some command issues, but I think sometimes that’s what helps you evolve as a pitcher. I think he just refocused, took a couple deep

breaths and I think his catcher, [senior] Kyle Khoury, helped him a little bit.”

The North Stars (31-4) got on the board first after junior John LeGare singled off Streamwood pitcher Junior Alvarez in the second inning and Khoury reached base on an error. The two upperclassmen would then score on a passed ball.

North would tack on another run after senior Tyler Madsen walked and junior Brendan Joyce doubled to left field.

The game then became the Mettetal show. Ten of his 15 strikeouts came in the final four innings and, despite an unusually rough performance from the North Stars offensively, he didn’t allow a single run after the fourth inning.

“He battled through it,” Genke said. “I was ready to take him out. His pitch count was getting up, but there was something about his performance today.

He wanted to be in the game.”

The North Stars entered Wednesday’s game having

scored at least 10 runs in five of its past eight games. However, North managed only four runs against the Sabres.

Genke said the team will need better plate appearances if it hopes to score more runs in the regional final.

“I think we need to execute some better swings at the plate when we’re up in the count,” Genke said. “I thought we hit a couple balls good today and the wind kind of knocked them down. I think we need to get a bit deeper in the count, too. I think a few guys had some firstpitch outs which we never like as an offense.”

But it wasn’t all struggles for the Stars offensively. LeGare and senior Cory Wright each reached base three times in the game. Both players also recorded two hits.

The top seed in the St. Charles East Sectional, North will advance to face either Schaumburg or Bartlett, who play today, in Saturday’s championship.

St. Charles East’s luck runs out in extra innings

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ADDISON – The St. Charles East baseball team’s luck ran out in the ninth inning of an IHSA Class 4A Addison Trail Regional semifinal Wednesday.

Trailing Lake Park, 4-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Saints tied the score on a rally that featured a double steal, a dropped fly ball and one hit – a single.

East found themselves in the same situation in the ninth, trailing 5-4. This time, East was retired in order, sealing a Lancers’ victory and ending the Saints’ season.

“Great comeback for our guys. We didn’t give up. It was looking bleak and we could of rolled over,” said Saints coach Len Asquini about the seventh inning rally. “We took advantage of a dropped fly ball out there which was very helpful, but let’s finish that up with a base hit – game over and we weren’t able to do that.”

Lake Park took an early 2-0 lead on a Colin Jamison two-run home run to center in the second inning. Lancer Brody Thompson scored two more runs in the fourth with a double to the rightfield gap.

The Saints picked up a run in their half of the fourth on Reid Olson’s sacrifice fly to make the the score, 4-1.

Olson started the rally in the seventh after being hit by a pitch from Lake Park starting pitcher AJ Ackerely. Jake Milosch fol-

lowed with a single – which was only the fourth hit given up by Ackerely – down the left-field line that advanced Olson to third.

Jacob Clodi loaded the bases by drawing the first walk of the game from Ackerely.

Corbin Marucco hit a grounder to the shortstop in what at first appeared to be a game-ending double play. Clodi was out at second, but Marucco beat the relay to first. Olson scored on the play.

East (25-10) pulled off a double steal during first baseman James Dale’s at-bat. Marucco swiped second while Milosch scored.

Dale hit a fly ball to left field that also looked like it would end the game, but the Lancers’ outfielder dropped the ball and enabled Marucco to score the tying run. Ackerely ended the inning by inducing Max Powers to ground out to the shortstop.

“I was just thinking we had to keep battling,” said Athony Adduci, who started the inning with a pop out. “We needed bet-

ter approaches, square some balls up and get guys in.”

Lake Park (14-21) reclaimed the lead on back-to-back doubles in the ninth. Jamison opened the inning with a double to center and scored on Thompson’s double to right.

In the bottom of the ninth, facing relief pitcher Colin Fowich, the Saints did not catch a break as the right hander threw a three-up, three-down inning.

“We had the game so it was really nice to come back and persevere,” Lake Park coach Dan Colucci said. “They are a tough team. They are the number three seed for a reason.”

Michael Vyzral started for the Saints. Stephen Podany replaced him on the hill in the sixth and pitched an inning.

Austin Regelbrugge took over in the seventh and was pegged with the loss.

The Saints were eliminated for the second year in a row in a regional semifinal. Last year, East was eliminated by Hoffman Estates, 3-1.

‘Sparkplug’ Burns, Geneva claims 1st regional title Batavia upset WV

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com OSWEGO – Every time senior shortstop Elyse Burns came to the plate, she was met with a raucous chorus of some version of “Let’s go, Sparky!” from the Batavia fans.

She earned the nickname on Wednesday afternoon, proving the catalyst as the No. 14-seeded Bulldog softball team upset No. 3 Waubonsie Valley, 4-2, in the Class 4A Oswego Regional semifinal.

Burns reached base safely in each of her four at-bats as the No. 2 hitter, going 3 for 4, with a run scored and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning.

Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos was impressed by Burns’ approach at the plate, as she saw 23 pitches over her four plate appearances, including an 11-pitch third at-bat that ended in a single.

“Elyse Burns is just a sparkplug for our offense,” Castellanos said. “I moved her up to the two-spot earlier in the season because she’s been having some great at-bats. She takes a lot of pitches, she works the pitcher, which I like because it gives our other hitters a chance to see more pitches and that’s huge.”

With one away no one on and the score tied at 2 in the top of the seventh, Batavia leadoff hitter Ryanne Rokos slapped a single up the middle.

Burns came up and hit Warriors starter Shannon Hohman’s third pitch deep to left field, falling for an RBI double, allowing Rokos to race around to score.

Watching her teammate leave third, Burns took the bag for herself and continued home when she saw the throw had gone to the backstop. She beat Hohman’s tag at the plate to give Batavia the 4-2 lead.

Waubonsie Valley caoch Valerie Wood was disappointed for the senior class, including Hohman, who went out as the tough luck, complete-game loser in the contest.

Burns made adjustments to her swing all game and kept her approach fresh by relying on her instincts.

“The way I’ve always played softball, when I swing I usually make contact, so it’s not hard to go deep into the count,” Burns said. “She was a really tough pitcher and when I first came out and swung at two balls that were way outside, I was like, ‘Wow, she has way more movement than I expected.’ ” Batavia starting pitcher Rachael Lovestrand went the distance, giving up two runs off five hits while striking out four in the complete-game victory.

“Our defense played great behind her,” Castellanos said.

“Rachael came in and hit her spots, moved the ball around.

She came through for us today, big time.”

With the 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, Lovestrand pitched around a leadoff error, striking out Warriors center fielder Veronica Zahn to end the game, stranding the runner at third.

The sophomore threw 96 pitchers to earn the win, keeping the Warriors off-balanced after giving up two runs in the third.

“I was nervous, but I trusted my team to make good outs.

I trust my defense,” Lovestrand said. “I tried to get ahead in the count and save my arm, move them around and not just throw right down the middle since I know they’re good hitters and could hit me.”

GENEVA – Hosting a regional championship against Upstate Eight Conference River Divison rival and No. 1-seeded St. Charles North, the Geneva High School boys volleyball team probably didn’t need much of a pep talk Wednesday.

The school had never won a regional championship in its short boys volleyball history and all those circumstances really sort of spoke for themselves.

From the opening serve until the final ball hit the floor, Geneva played with a little more energy to avenge a loss to North earlier in the season to take home the regional title with a 27-25, 22-25, 25-15 victory.

“This is only our seventh season and only our third or fourth with an actual full schedule,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “So we’ve come a long way and a lot of these kids have been here since the beginning. We had a bunch of alumni that came back and they said they appreciated the effort.

Geneva (20-16) fell behind the North Stars, 13-10, in the first game. However, as the Vikings started to get into a rhythm and adjust to the double-block that North used to shade outside hitter Nick Buseski, the game began to seesaw. The two teams tied at 13, 15, 17, 20 and 23 before Geneva managed to sneak out a 27-25 victory.

“I thought our serve receptions were fantastic,” Seitelman said. “That allows us to stay in system and run a more distrib-

uted offense.”

That distribution was key for Geneva as North keyed in on Buseski. The 6-foot-8 outside hitter had 13 kills, and Jonathan Bishop, Luke Will and Sam Wulfkuhle each had six kills or more.

“We’re a well-rounded team.

All of us have been playing for three or four years now,” Will said. “We were going all out tonight and we’re exhausted.”

In the second game, North (23-13) managed to make a few adjustments and rode Brendan Donlevy’s eight kills to claim the 25-22 win. Donlevy finished with 20 kills.

“We made some adjustments in the second set that we had wanted, but we didn’t like how everything was going and we continued to try to talk and get through more adjustments,” North coach Todd Weimer said.

“But we weren’t listening and we kept doing the same things over and over again.”

In third game, Geneva took the lead early but it wasn’t until a string of blocks blew the game open and gave Geneva a 19-9 lead. From there, the Vikings cruised to the win.

Knights survive to upset Rockets

Saturday’s championship Kaneland vs. Hampshire-Sycamore winner, noon “We definitely play a little bit better defensively than that normally,” Rockets coach Kyle Nelson said. “It is just one of those days. It happened a couple times throughout the year and it happened at the wrong time.”

The game went back and forth in the later innings. The first big moment was when Burlington Central’s Kilian Vasica tied the score at 4 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Kaneland retook the lead with a Stratman double that plated Austin Wheatley in the top of the fifth.

Vasica tied the score again for the Rockets when the sophomore’s double brought Andrew Lauber in to make it 5-all in the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Kaneland scored twice to take the lead for good. The first run came when Wheatley scored as Stratman reached on an error on a fly ball deep to right field.

Stratman eventually scored on a Jacob Bachio single.

“I thought our hitting was spectacular,” Fellows said.

“When they answered and they tied it up, we were back the next inning getting the lead back, so that was nice.”

The middle of the Kaneland lineup was key to the Knights scoring runs. The 4-5-6 batters – Stratman, Bachio and Matt Rosko – combined for six of the Knights’ 11 hits and scored four runs combined.

Danny Hammermeister had two hits and two RBIs in the contest for Kaneland.

HAMPSHIRE – Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Kaneland baseball team were clinging to a two-run lead over top-seeded Burlington Central in an IHSA Class 3A Hampshire Regional semifinal.

Kaneland ace Colton Fellows had pitched well enough to get the Knights to this point, but walked the first batter of the final inning.

The senior struck out Tanner Smith and Avery Moore was caught stealing by Knights catcher Joe Laudont on the same pitch. The final batter flew out to Nick Stratman in centerfield and Kaneland pulled out the 7-5 win.

“I was really upset with myself walking the first batter,” Fellows said. “Then the second batter got really deep in the count too. I think he chased my fastball up a little bit, so I am really happy he did that.”

The Knights will play the winner between Hampshire and Sycamore, which takes place at 4 p.m. today in Hampshire.

“We have this little bit of momentum going for us,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “We scheduled hard all year long to prepare us for this point in time, and we are really showing that preparation has paid dividends for us. We are happy with where we are at and we are going to continue to keep this confidence and momentum into the next game.”

Fellows earned the complete-game victory after allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out five Rockets.

Kaneland (21-12) did not commit an error and made some solid plays in the field behind the senior hurler.

On the other hand, Burlington Central (24-9) struggled defensively. The infield allowed an infield hit on a slow-roller and a few hard-hit ground balls through the holes.

ADVICE Mom scared of in-laws’ driving habits Dear Abby: My in-laws are fabulous. They love me and think the world of our 2-year-old daughter, “Hayley.” They do anything to support us.

Recently, they asked to take Hayley overnight and drive a number of places with her. My concern is the driving part. My father-inlaw doesn’t believe in car seats. On a few occasions he has asked me to just hop in the car with Hayley without a car seat. I refused. Another time, they had a circa-1980 car seat and asked to take Hayley with them to church. When I went to put her in the seat, the buckles wouldn’t work. When I reached over to the other side, the seat fell over. It wasn’t even strapped in!

Now for my biggest fear: My mother-in-law is a notorious distracted driver – she applies makeup, eats food, talks on the phone and texts. I am not comfortable with her taking Hayley in the car with her.

Good hygiene, limited contact protect infants from measles Dear Doctor K: My daughter is 4 months old. How can I protect her from measles until she is old enough to get the vaccine?

Dear Reader: In an earlier column, I discussed the value of the measles vaccine in children who are old enough to get it – at least 12 months old.

But you ask a different, and important, question: Since kids like your daughter who are younger than 12 months can get measles, but can’t get the vaccine, is there any way to protect them?

Even though most cases of the measles are not serious, some kids can become very sick. And kids under the age of 12 months are most likely to get dangerously sick from measles.

Even though your daughter is not yet old enough to get the vaccine, the vaccine is already protecting her. (I’ll explain how below.) It is a really effective vaccine. Before it was available – as when I was a kid – half a million children got measles every year in the United States.

Then, in 1968, scientists introduced the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Most parents insisted that their kids get

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the vaccine, and they were proven right: Between 2001 and 2004, only 251 cases of measles were reported in the U.S. That’s a successful vaccine.

Unfortunately, things have started to change for the worse.

The number of kids getting measles each year has been rising.

That’s because, for about 20 years, a growing number of parents have been reluctant to have their children get the recommended vaccines.

How is the vaccine protecting your daughter? The greatest threat of her catching the measles in the next eight months is from other kids who haven’t gotten the vaccine. Why? Because when the measles virus moves through a community, every time it comes to a person who has received the vaccine, it stops: Since the immunized child won’t get the measles, that child won’t be able to spread the virus to a child who is too young to get the vaccine.

There are things you can do to reduce your daughter’s risk in the next eight months: • Frequently wash your hands, and your child’s hands, with soap and warm water. This helps prevent the spread of measles and many other infections.

• Ask the parents of children who might come in contact with your daughter if their kids have received the measles vaccine.

If, despite these efforts, your daughter is exposed to a child with measles, she may be eligible for an injection of immune globulin (IG). IG boosts the body’s immune response, and it can prevent, or at least minimize, the symptoms of a measles infection.

If you and your daughter will be traveling to a part of the world where measles is still common, your pediatrician may recommend she get one dose of MMR vaccine. It may offer some protection, even though she is not yet 12 months old.

Teen develops bad habit of looking for flaws in friends Dr. Wallace: I think I’ve developed a habit of always looking for flaws in my friends and family and even strangers when I see them. I’m almost positive that my friends have noticed this, but no one has ever made me aware of my problem. If a friend gets a good grade in a class, I always say that the teacher is an easy grader. Yesterday my best friend showed me a picture of her cousin from Chicago and I said that her cousin had big ears and that she should always wear her hair down over them.

Can you tell me why I act like this? I’d really like to change before I begin to lose friends.

– Tina, Springfield, Missouri Dear Tina: You’re way ahead of the game.

Most people have almost no awareness of their habitual behaviors and, if confronted about something, will automatically deny they do it. Change is impossible unless you, first, recognize the problem and, second, truly want to overcome it.

Habitual negativity toward others points to a deep-seated insecurity about your own worth.

You can override it by cultivating new habits that accentuate the positive. Go out of your way to look for the good qualities in people and comment about it. This will make them feel great and in return, so will you.

Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend and I are both 19, and we both graduated from high school. I took driver’s training, so now I have a license and a car that my parents gave me for graduation.

My boyfriend doesn’t

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace have a car yet. In fact, he doesn’t even have a driver’s license. So now my problem is that I end up being his chauffeur because he keeps procrastinating about getting a license and a car even though he has a decent job and could make payments.

Being his chauffeur really makes things inconvenient for me because we don’t work near each other and I have to pick him up at his house and then drop him off at his work before I go to my job.

(This sometimes makes me late for work, but my boss understands my situation.) Then after work I have to pick him up and drop him off at his house and then drive myself home.

Except for the inconvenience, I really like this guy, but I think he should get a car and learn to drive. Even his parents told him they won’t drive him anywhere. What do you think about the situation? – Sherry, Reno, Nevada Dear Sherry: I think your boyfriend might be one of only a few 19-year-old guys in North America who doesn’t have a driver’s license!

You should refuse to drive him to work.

It will force his hand to either get a driver’s license and a car or take public transportation.

Henri Poincare, a French polymath who died in 1912, said, “It is far better to foresee even without certainty than not to foresee at all.”

That is also true at the bridge table. Better, though, is when declarer can foresee exactly how to make his contract. In this deal, the right line is tough to spot.

How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads a trump?

In a perfect world, North-South would end in three no-trump, which has nine top tricks via five spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. But after North transfers into spades, then offers a choice of games with three notrump, South will be nervous of the spade-suit blockage. If North does not have a side entry, three no-trump will fail.

Note West’s opening salvo. It is dangerous to lead around to a big, balanced hand. A trump rates to be the safest start that he has.

Declarer has four possible losers: one heart, two diamonds and one club. Maybe clubs will break 3-3, but that is unlikely.

Or perhaps the diamond finesse will work; in theory, this is a 50-50 shot, but not in newspaper columns or classes!

South needs to remember that a ruff in the shorter trump hand eliminates a loser and gains an extra trump trick. He should take the first trick, cash his diamond ace, and continue with the diamond queen.

West wins and plays another trump, but South takes that, crosses to dummy with a club, and ruffs the last diamond in his hand.

Then he cruises home. The queen of diamonds is a red-card herring.
