PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Felkamp You’ll be hard pressed to find a Batavia resident who hasn’t heard of Engstrom Park. Located just south of Batavia High School, Engstrom is one of the most heavily used parks within the Batavia Park District boundaries. The park plays host to soccer games, family picnics and more. It also serves as a viewing area for the Fourth of July fireworks.

The 12-acre park offers a variety of amenities, including a baseball field, basketball courts, a playground, a large picnic shelter, soccer fields and walking path, and it truly offers something for everyone.

The park was purchased in 1980 and officially dedicated in June 1985. The last major work done to the park was the installation of a new playground in 2000. The Batavia Parks Foundation also purchased a new SpaceNet apparatus that was installed and dedicated in 2010.

This summer, the park will undergo a major renovation that will include the removal and replacement of all pavement; replacement of two parking lots; path widening and realignment; renovation of a basketball court; installation of two large rain gardens; picnic shelter renovation; and installation of two permanent bean bag structures.

“The extra width will provide patrons with greater safety and walking comfort,” said Capital Projects Manager Jim Eby. “The length of the entire path will be one mile.”

Engstrom’s shelter is the site of many family picnics, birthday parties and reunions.

It will be completely renovated to include a new roof and reinforced beams and posts.

“The shelter will have a totally new, open concept look,” Eby said. “Adjacent to the shelter, we’ll have our first regular bags court with permanent

boxes.”

One of the basketball courts will be removed due to the realignment of the path, and the remaining court will receive a new surface, new goals and standards, and will be striped to accommodate roller hockey. In addition to the basketball courts, the two parking lots will be replaced.

“The reconstruction of the two parking lots will give the entire park a fresh new look,” Eby said.

The final piece of the renovation will be the installation of two rain gardens, which will aid in storm water man-

agement. The gardens are designed to hold water so it absorbs into the ground rather than running over land as it has done in the past.

“The rain gardens will be full of deep-rooted native plants that will add some natural color to the park,” Eby said.

Salvation Army Donut Days kicks off Friday

The organization’s 77th Annual Donut Days kicks off this Friday. Volunteer taggers will be outside stores in Geneva and St. Charles to collect donations of any amount, said Salvation Army Major Ken Nicolai of the Geneva-based Salvation Army Golden Diners Program of Kane and McHenry counties.

Entenmann’s donated 4,000 donuts for central Kane County’s Donut Days, Nicolai said.

The idea for the event began back in World War I when Salvation Army workers served coffee and doughnuts to cheer up soldiers in the trenches. The doughnuts have since became part of a fundraiser for The Salvation Army.

Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Raj Patel plans to open a Dunkin’ Donuts location in a forthcoming multitenant building in Sugar Grove, said Walter Magdziarz, the village’s community development director. The building will be on an outlot west of the Sugar Grove Jewel between the local Chase Bank and Phil-

bschory@shawmedia.com The case of Stacy Fiebelkorn, the owner of a now-defunct petting zoo called Mini Zoo Crew, shocked Kane County Animal Control workers and volunteers who stepped up to care for more than 90 sick and starving animals.

Fiebelkorn, of Elgin, was arrested March 5, charged with one count of a violation of an owner’s duty to provide adequate food, shelter and water and vet care to prevent suffering, and one count of cruelty to animals, both misdemeanors.

Fiebelkorn gave up most of her animals, and the rest were taken by forfeiture – horses, ducks, goats, ponies, alpacas, chickens, rabbits, donkeys and turkeys among them.

More than a dozen were found dead, and some were euthanized when they could not be saved, officials said.

Because her case still is pending, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office would not comment about it, or what the charges mean in

Natasha Whitling, spokeswoman for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the organization works on a variety of animal welfare cases across the country.

“Strong penalties help deter acts of cruelty towards animals,” Whitling wrote in an emailed response to a question. “In 2014, South Dakota

became the 50th state to enact felony penalties for certain acts of animal cruelty.”

Each state decides what types of acts constitute animal cruelty and how severe the penalties will be, Whitling said.

“Many states have demanded greater protections for animals in their communities by passing legislation to strengthen penalties for acts of cruelty,” Whitling said “When an anti-cruelty law includes felony penalties, a criminal court judge can punish an abuser with higher fines and longer jail sentences compared to a misdemeanor-level crime.”

Cherie Travis, an assistant general counsel at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, said she would not comment directly about the Fiebelkorn case. But Travis said she could speak generally about what the charges of animal cruelty and failure of an owner’s duty mean generally under Illinois law – and when they warrant a misdemeanor or a more serious felony charge.

“There are a variety of animal cruelty laws, but generally speaking, basic neglect is a Class B misdemeanor,” Travis said.

That category of misdemeanor is punishable of up to six months in jail, and a fine of up to $1,500.

“That statute requires that every owner of every animal provide them with basic care, sufficient wholesome food and water, veterinary care to prevent suffering, provide humane care and treatment and shelter from the weather,” Travis said.

“No matter what animal a person has – if someone has a horse, a cow, a ferret, a dog or a cat – every owner of every animal has to provide it with basic care,” she said.

The longer the period of time in which there is a lack of care or if there is intentional cruelty are factors that increase the likelihood of a felony charge, she said. The lowest class of felony, Class 4, has a punishment of one to and three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

Travis said she does training in applying animal cruelty laws for all Cook County Sheriff’s deputies, at the Illinois State Police Academy as well as for a variety of jurisdictions, including Kane County.

“If an owner goes away for the weekend and does not leave food and water for the dog, it’s probably a Class B misdemeanor,” Travis said.

“If they have not fed the dog for a week or two, and the animal is in starvation mode, that’s more likely to be a Class A misdemeanor.”

A Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $2,500.

“If the animal has suffered serious injury or death, that is a Class 4 felony,” Travis said. “The more offensive or egregious the conduct, the more likely it is to be the Class A misdemeanor or a

felony.”

In addition to strong anti-cruelty laws, Illinois is one of two states in the country that also addresses animal hoarding, Travis said.

“Animal hoarding is a finding, not a charge,” she said. “You do not get ‘charged’ with animal hoarding – you would be charged with neglect or cruelty – but the finding requires the court to mandate a psychiatric evaluation and provide treatment.”

In a case she handled a few years ago in Chicago, a woman was a repeat cat hoarder with up to 75 cats in her apartment at one time, Travis said. The court ordered an intervention, allowing animal control to make unannounced visits to assure that she would not begin to accumulate cats again, she said.

Tufts University in Boston hosted a collaboration of research on animal hoarding from 1999 to 2006 to find more effective and humane solutions to the problem.

The Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium published a community intervention manual to address the problem.

The research found that without intervention, a person afflicted with the compulsion to collect or hoard animals always will continue to do it, according to the Tufts website.

Illinois law also addresses dog fighting. All aspects of it – hosting, attending, promoting or providing the space for it – can lead to felony charges.

“A lot of the public’s awareness of animal cruelty and the criminalization of it, has to do with Michael Vick,” Travis said, alluding to the dog-fighting case involving the NFL quarterback. “That case catapulted animal cruelty into the spotlight. When people read accounts of what was done to those dogs, it created an understanding that it was not a sport or benign pastime. It was barbaric, and no animal should suffer like that.”

Geneva chiropractor starts petition for Whole Foods store

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As a chiropractor, Ryan Deniz knows the importance of eating healthy.

Deniz, who owns Partner in Health in downtown Geneva, has started a petition to bring a Whole Foods grocery store to the space at 2000 South Randall Road in Geneva that previously housed a Dominick’s store. That store was one of 72 Chicago-area Dominick’s stores to close last year.

“A store that provides the highest-quality natural and organic products and soon to have all products labeled if they contain genetically modified organisms is sorely needed and would receive strong neighborhood support,” the petition stated.

There is currently no Whole Foods grocery store in the Tri-Cities area. The two closest Whole Foods stores are in Wheaton and Naperville.

More than 600 people have signed his petition, which is at http://petitions.moveon.org.

His goal is to get 1,000 signatures.

Last week, his sister hand-delivered a petition containing 560 signatures to

Whole Foods’ corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas.

Allison Phelps, public relations specialist for Whole Foods Market Midwest Support Office, said Whole Foods is not currently considering opening a store in Geneva.

“Whole Foods Market is always looking for new, vibrant communities like Geneva, where we think we can be of service; however, there are no plans to open a store in Geneva at this time,” Phelps said in an email.

Phelps said the company does listen to communities when choosing where to locate a future store and recommended that people contact the company through its website.

Deniz said he plans to continue his petition.

“It’s unfortunate that they have no plans at this time,” he said. “I hope they might reconsider in the future. It would be nice to have a one-stop shop for organic food, produce and dairy.”

Deniz said the attention his petition is generating might make Mariano’s consider opening a store in Geneva.

Mariano’s is in the process of opening stores in several former Dominick’s stores.

D-101 approves Chromebooks for students

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 board members on Tuesday approved a $1 million lease with U.S. Bank Equipment Finance Technology Group, so the district can purchase Chromebooks for all students in grades six to 12.

Each Dell Chromebook 11 unit will cost $302.95 each.

Board members had previously voted, 5-2, to approve the district’s 21st Century Learning Plan, with board members Jon Gaspar and Gregg Hodge voting “no.” The plan calls for the district to provide a personal device to all students within two years.

Gaspar on Tuesday voted against the lease. Hodge was absent from the meeting.

“I want to see how the year plays out,” Gaspar said. “I want to talk to the teachers on how it goes.”

Included in the cost for each unit is a carrying case for each student to protect against accidental damage.

The device for students in kindergarten to second grade has not yet been determined.

The plan calls for a $75 student registration fee increase for grades six to 12 and the upgrade of the district’s wireless network at a cost of $275,000.

The increase would bring registration fees for Batavia middle school students to $165 a year and to $194 a year for the district’s high school students. Currently, middle school students pay $90 annually in registration fees and high school students pay $119 annually in registration fees.

With the cost of Google Chromebooks at $300 each, a $75 a year increase in fees would pay for half of the device. The Chromebooks have an expected lifespan of two years.

HARVARD – Gordon H. Jacobsen, 78, of Harvard, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Mercy Harvard Care Center. He was born Oct. 7, 1935, in St. Charles to Peter and Anna (Larsen) Jacobsen.

Gordon farmed his entire life in the Harvard area. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and was a baseball fan. He was a member of Capron Lutheran Church. Gordon served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

Survivors include two sisters, Ellen (Walter) Stuffle of Huntley and Joyce Cosman of Belvidere; one brother, Paul Jacobsen of Maple Park; nieces and nephews, Elaine Drazin of Bakersfield, Terri (Steven) Donald of Wisconsin, Chris (Larry) Eigenhausser of DeKalb, Joie Jacobsen of Astoria, New York, Duane Jacobsen of Maple Park, Tim (Becky) Cosman of Harvard and Robert (Krista) Cosman of Poplar Grove; many grandnieces and grandnephews and several relatives in Denmark.

ST. CHARLES – Ronald J. Link, 78, of St. Charles, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, with his family by his side. Ron was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Elgin. Ron met his wife Harriet, and they were married July 4, 1954, in Morris.

After retirement, he and Harriet made their home in Naples, Florida, where he enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time with his family before relocating to St. Charles.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Catherine (Mark Ford) Link of Taylorville; his sons, Ronald (Bridget) Link of Batavia and Jeffery (Cheryl) Link of Sugar Grove; his five grandchildren, Gary (Randy Ford) Spangler of DeKalb, Alyssa (Michael) Warner of North Aurora, Molly (Ryan) Freed of Batavia, Abigail Link of Milwaukee and Benjamin Link of Batavia; and a great-granddaughter, Blake Warner of North Aurora.

In addition to his immediate family, Ron is survived by his devoted caregiver, Eva Hynkova Carlson; and many friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Harriet, in 2007; his parents, John and Adeline; and his brother, Johnny.

Allen is survived by his loving wife, Lynette; two children, Stacey (Matt) Roach of DeKalb and Mark Swan of Chicago; four grandsons: Alex, Nick, Logan and Brian Roach all of DeKalb; his mother, Lucille Swan and his brother, Craig Swan both of Elburn; one aunt, Louise Penrod of Minnesota; his beloved father-inlaw, Kenneth Clayton; three special sisters-in-law, Donna Tischhauser, Lisa Clayton and Kristi (Randy) Thompson all of Athens, Tennessee; three nieces, Elizabeth (Mark) Boesen of Woodstock, Amanda (Brandon Smith) Walker and Sophia Guffey; one nephew, Joseph Guffey all of Athens, Tennessee; two special great-nephews, Nathan Gabriel Walker of Athens and Aron James Boesen of Woodstock. Allen was a man of integrity. He will be missed.

Blaze damages home in St. Charles Fire started when tree limb fell on wires; no injuries reported

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A house just south of downtown St. Charles was damaged Tuesday by fire that started when a tree limb fell on the home’s electrical service wires, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

“It’s a beautiful home, and it was an unfortunate accident,” he said. “I’m very pleased to see everything was held in check.”

A tree service reportedly was cutting down a tree in the 600 block of Geneva Road near Mount St. Mary Park when a portion of the tree fell on the wires.

A tree service employee reported the fire, and firefighters arrived at about 9:49 a.m. to find a small fire on the house’s exterior, Schelstreet said. He noted a man affiliated with the tree service was using a fire extinguisher on the blaze, which helped limit the damage.

“They were prepared,” Schelstreet said. “The damage obviously could have been far worse if they weren’t prepared.”

Personnel from the city’s electric department arrived within 15 minutes and cut the power, Schelstreet said. He said the fire danger was removed at that time.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, no injuries were reported and the household’s pets were found, Schelstreet said.

The loss reportedly was estimated at $5,000 to the structure and the contents. Geneva Road temporarily was closed to traffic because firefighters needed to lay a hose on the road, Schelstreet said.

Although firefighters extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, they remained on the scene until 11:36 a.m. to assist the homeowners and to conduct the fire investigation.

The St. Charles Fire Department received assistance from the Geneva, Batavia and South Elgin fire departments.

Units from Elburn provided coverage while St. Charles units were at the fire.

Sugar Grove resident Eric Schaaf worked with the village to install two turtle crossing signs on Norris Road, an area active for turtle crossings and many turtle deaths.

Norris Road splits the Walnut Woods subdivision retention pond and Carson Slough Park, Schaaf said.

Schaaf, who lives in Walnut Woods, said he regularly patrols Norris Road with his sons, Grant, 14, and Brent, soon to be 11, for turtles in peril.

Although they leave the dead and injured turtles for the other wildlife, Schaaf

said, they help adult snapping turtles, adult painted turtles and hatchlings get to safety.

“We’ve collected them off the roads since we’ve been here,” Schaaf said, estimating they save 10 to 20 each year.

After repeatedly saying he should get “turtle crossing” signs, Schaaf finally had enough. He said he emailed

the village for permission and indicated which existing signposts could be used.

The village responded within 24 hours, Schaaf said.

“We were super happy,” he said.

Tony Speciale, Sugar Grove’s director of public works, said requests like Schaaf’s are reviewed on an individual basis, and the village makes a decision on the

situation and cost to the village.

In this case, Speciale said, the village’s role was installing the signs on existing signposts.

“This was discussed in the past by other residents, and basically this resident presented a proposal and a solution [that] he thought would solve the situation,” Speciale said, “and we agreed.”

SUGAR GROVE – After nearly 10 years of seeing turtles crossing a busy road near his house – and seeing many injured by passing cars – Sugar Grove resident Eric Schaaf has taken it upon himself to help save the reptiles.

With permission from the village, he said, he purchased two “turtle crossing” signs for $130 that public works personnel installed May 20 on Norris Road.

Schaaf hopes the signs will get motorists to slow down.

“People tend to go down that road pretty fast as a cutthrough,” he said. “Turtles get hit all the time.”

Schaaf, whose knowledge of turtles stems from a boyhood interest in the creatures, said adult female turtles cross roads as they make their way to higher ground to lay eggs, and snapping turtles will crawl several blocks as they seek out a soft area away from water to dig their nest.

GENEVA – Kane County is changing the way it connects with residents.

The county’s social media connection program is getting a reboot nearly a year after its summer 2013 launch.

Rick Nagel, a Geneva resident with a journalism background, is now spearheading the Kane County Connected initiative, which aims to engage people with county government and to provide them with information they can use, such as road closures.

“It’s a means of drawing us all together as one community,” said Kane County Board member Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, at the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

Nagel presented his progress on Kane County Connected since being hired as an independent contractor on March 3. His six-month, $30,000 contract is supported by riverboat casino funds.

Kane County Connected began as a great concept, Nagel said, describing it as innovative and ambitious with the best intentions of connecting people and communities and celebrating Kane County without being self-serving.

But in practice it was unmanageable for the then-two coordinators to handle, as it involved 10 websites, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages – each with its own login and password, Nagel said.

Additionally, he said, some of its targeted population groups – moms and dads, youth and sports, for example – weren’t tied to a specific government function, county department or county mission.

Through research that involved the county’s 25 department heads and elected officials, among others, Nagel said he learned that some of

the county’s existing outreach is outdated and costly; the county is at least five years behind in using social media; the county isn’t using the tools it already has; and, among other realizations, the county needs to reach people quickly.

Nagel is developing Kane County Connected into a three-platform program that uses WordPress, Facebook and a daily e-newsletter.

“I wanted to build something in six months,” he said.

As of his latest tallies, he said, Kane County Connected has more than 1,600 followers on WordPress, more than 5,700 newsletter subscribers, more than 1,400 likes on Facebook and more than 110 followers on Twitter.

The total reach is just shy of 9,000, Nagel said, calling his progress “a foundation.”

Nagel next plans to diversify by expanding to other social media sites, such as LinkedIn; adding e-blasts and text messaging; and developing mechanisms for civil dialogue and citizen engagement.

He invited the County Board members to provide input, generate content and market the initiative.

Board members had positive feedback for him.

“I think this is great,” said Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, “because people don’t know what goes on here.”

T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, asked Nagel how he plans to make sure residents aren’t neglected.

“A large part of my constituency is on Social Security, not social media,” Smith said.

“How do we reach these people?”

Nagel said the county’s print materials serve that population, and he doesn’t want to abandon print. But, he added, if an initiative like Kane County Connected isn’t used, he’s afraid of losing the next generation.

EPA and new rules THE WASHINGTON POST

Blackhawks could lead by example The controversy surrounding NBA owner Donald Sterling has reignited a discussion of racism in American sports, which, these days, inevitably links to the debate over the name and mascot of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

Other professional franchises with Native American monikers, such as the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians and your Chicago Blackhawks, have thus far escaped significant criticism. However, the Blackhawks’ current playoff run provides an opportunity to assess the appropriateness of the logo.

The Washington NFL team will no longer be called the “Redskins” at some point (three to five years is my guess), because changing it is right thing to do. The president has publicly supported a change. The media is not going to drop the issue. And, at some point, NFL players, many of whom have experienced racism, will likely take up the cause.

And when the Redskins change, pressure will shift to teams like the Braves, Indians and Blackhawks.

Chicago has a proud history as a progressive city, so I’ve been surprised to discover just how much oldschool racism still lurks below the surface. But the city, the Blackhawks and their fans have an opportunity to be trendsetters. Will the Black-

The standard defenses of the use of Native American mascots are that they’re “tradition,” and that they’re not intended to offend (indeed, some claim they honor Native Americans).

The first of those defenses is just plain weak – many “traditions” have been discarded because they were no longer consistent with our values. This would include various forms of discrimination, including a “tradition” directly related to this discussion – the ban on minorities in professional sports.

The second of those defenses is trickier, but just as feeble. Just because one isn’t intentionally offensive doesn’t mean one isn’t offensive.

Instead, many people don’t see their views as racist because they can’t understand the impact on others. Think of it this way – the basic message being sent to Native Americans is that we stole your land and pushed you to the point of invisibility through one of the most successful genocides in

human history, but we reserve the right to use cartoon images of your people to entertain ourselves. In what universe is that not offensive?

But the larger point is that it isn’t for predominantly white, middle/ upper-class audiences to determine whether Native Americans are offended by sports logos – that’s their right, not ours. And even if 80 percent of Native Americans accept the use of such mascots, the other 20 percent matter.

Changing the mascot would be a smart business decision. In addition to the positive national press it would generate, merchandising revenue would certainly spike for a couple of years. And would any Chicagoan really stop supporting Toews, Kane and the rest of the squad if they had a different picture on their jerseys?

So, which is it, Blackhawks fans? Do you have the empathy and foresight to be ahead of the curve, or will you be dragged into the 21st century kicking and screaming?

The Environmental Protection Agency will soon unveil its most anticipated new rules in a generation, the shape of which will help determine how well the United States responds to the threat of climate change. There will be fierce debate about them before they become final. Critics will try to undermine the effort by insisting that the rules be weak, poorly designed and unnecessarily expensive. Instead, the EPA should make them ambitious, fair and flexible.

One set of rules, already released, limits the construction of power plants that would produce too much carbon dioxide, all but banning new, noxious coal-fired power stations. That’s good.

Now comes the big one. The EPA is poised to demand cuts from existing power plants. They are responsible for nearly half of the nation’s greenhouse emissions. The agency is reportedly ready to require carbon emission reductions in the power sector of about 25 percent by 2030.

How flexible will the rules be? The EPA wants to set broad emissions goals for states, then allow state governments and power companies flexibility in meeting them – by installing new technologies at power plants or investing in efficiency or renewable energy off site.

Critics contend the EPA can’t do that under the Clean Air Act. The extent of EPA authority will be decided in court.

But there is no doubt about what the better policy would be. Instead of limiting the EPA to plant-by-plant mandates, it is far better to demand deeper emissions cuts but offer the power sector leeway to meet them inexpensively and creatively.

What’s at stake is more than a few gigatons of carbon dioxide here or there. The world is closely watching what emerges from the EPA rulemaking process. Other nations will use the results to gauge this country’s seriousness – and the extent to which they can find moral cover to delay cuts they should be making. The United States should not offer them any.

jschwab@shawmedia.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – It took 3½ hours of real time, waiting out a thunderstorm that gave way to a gorgeous double rainbow and enduring a physical, injury-riddled showdown, but finally, the St. Charles East girls soccer team has beaten St. Charles North.

And what a spot for the Saints to do so.

East triumphed in a drawnout IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional semifinal battle Tuesday to defeat top-seeded St. Charles North, 2-1, in what is believed to be East’s first win in the rivalry series since the first year after St. Charles High School split.

The Saints have had a few close calls – including settling for a tie after leading North most of the way during this year’s regular season meeting – but the Saints finally solved their crosstown nemesis. East

The fourth-seeded Saints (16-4-2) advance to face the winner of tonight’s Geneva-Conant sectional semifinal on Friday. The Geneva-Conant match was supposed to be played Tuesday night but coaches from both teams agreed to move it back a day since it would have

St. Charles East shrugs off slow start

The Saints beat the Storm, 8-2, when the teams last met April 9. East was the runner-up in state a year ago and earned the Upstate Eight River championship this season, dethroning crosstown rival St. Charles North’s five-year run at the top.

It looked as though East

might fall into the trap of looking ahead after South Elgin went up 3-0 in the top half of the first, roughing up Saints ace Haley Beno for a three-run home run.

However, East came back swinging, putting up six runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 12-4 victory in the Class 4A St. Charles East Regional Semifinal.

The game finished in the top of the sixth inning after lightning was seen in the area, followed by around an hour of rain before the umpires called

the game.

After surrendering the opening blast, Beno settled in and went the distance – striking out four of the next five hitters she faced. The senior finished with nine strikeouts on the day.

“We were trying to get one back in the bottom of the first,” East head coach Kelly Horan said. “There’s going to be ups and downs, but as long as you stay through it, good things are going to happen. We stayed positive, and gosh, it came out OK for us today.”

Fellow senior Tess Hupe led East at the plate, going 4 for 4 with two runs batted in and a stolen base. She had two singles in East’s six-run first inning.

Third baseman Alex Latoria crushed the ball all afternoon, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances. She hit a three-run home run to right center field in the first inning, then reached on an error on a deep fly to left and doubled off the wall in right-center in the fourth.

“We have good balance,”

Horan said. “We’ve been pretty fortunate throughout the year to have somebody different contribute, so it was a pretty consistent effort today. A total team win.”

Every member of East’s starting lineup reached base at least once and eight of the nine recorded a hit.

Next up for the Saints will be the winner of Elk Grove and Elgin, who play in St. Charles today.

Horan said she was “confident” the field will be playable for tomorrow’s game.

East coach Paul Jennison was elated about his team’s performance – and his first win over North in his six-year tenure – though his postgame joy was dampened by a pair of injuries to Rion Gaffney and Hannah Rawson, both of which came after the restart with 17:41 to go in the second half.

Jennison didn’t blame the injuries on the lengthy wait.

“I think it’s just the chance of it’s soccer, collisions happen, accidents happen,” Jennison said. “That is what it is when you play the game. I hope those two are going to be all right because they’re quality girls. I hate to see that happen to any player but especially when they’re your own, and two seniors as well. That’s heartbreaking.”

The match went into the lightning delay with East ahead, 2-1. All three goals came in the first half.

East took control with two scores less than six minutes apart, the first coming on a low, well-struck shot from about 35 yards out by East midfielder Kelli Santo Paulo off Amanda Hilton’s assist.

“Amanda always sees me on that run,” Santo Paulo said.

The Saints struck again with 14:39 to play in the half on Rasmussen’s long free kick for a 2-0 lead. It was Rasmussen’s first goal off a free kick this season.

“We actually had a prac-

tice the other day but I stayed after to work on those,” Rasmussen said. “[Jennison] just said hit far post, so that’s what I was trying to do. It was close enough for me to take a shot instead of hoping to cross it in so I just hit it far post, and it went in, luckily.”

Toledo-bound North senior

Sophie Pohl injected the North Stars (17-5-2) with a dose of optimism leading into halftime.

Pohl brought North within 2-1 with 9:32 to go in the first half with a sliding finish of Hanna Durocher’s assist.

Durocher came close to tying the score at the 21:40 mark of the second half but her point-

blank shot went just wide. The North Stars also had a few decent chances against East’s packed-in defense after the resumption, with Jenny Barr, Alyssa Brandt and Lizzie Parrilli all cracking dangerous shots, though only Brandt’s free kick required a stop from East goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan.

Several North Stars sobbed during and after a lengthy postgame chat with veteran North coach Ruth Vostal.

“I am thrilled that they are this sad because all of the team-building stuff that we’ve done to bring them together, which makes them fight, has worked,” Vostal said.

North lost a key defender late in the first half when senior Megan O’Leary hobbled off with an injury and the North Stars were also without injured senior Danielle Noverini.

Both teams emerged energized after the long, tense delay. The North Stars desperately wanted the match to resume or East would have been declared the winner.

Santo Paulo said the Saints explored YouTube for some goosebump-inducing, motivational speeches during the break.

“They sent one in our group chat earlier and not everyone got to see it, so we played that one, and it really described our team and it really pumped us up to come back out here,” Santo Paulo said.

Katie Kinder said the bruising and swelling is subsiding in her son’s right eye, and his vision has returned. Tristan Kinder, also a football player at Kaneland, likely will have to avoid contact sports for at least four to six weeks after surgery.

While dealing with her son’s ordeal has been frontand-center – a stream of medical appointments and Tristan Kinder’s upcoming surgery have complicated the end of his school year, not to mention tending to her son’s physical and emotional welfare – Katie Kinder also has found herself wondering about the big picture of throwing-related injuries in track and field.

She doesn’t consider the setup for throwing events at Kaneland to be different than most other track venues she’s attended, but that’s not necessarily a source of comfort.

“I looked it up and there were quite a few cases [nationally] but who knows how many aren’t in the paper, how many aren’t online, that are happening, and then for it to literally happen [less than a week later] for a school we compete with, I was like, ‘Maybe this isn’t as rare as we all think it is,’ ” Katie Kinder said.

She said she’d like to see better markings near the safety net area where her son was injured and possible changes to the spacial configuration of the waiting area.

“You can’t change the world by yourself,” Katie Kinder said. “A lot of times if people are aware of things, I think things get changed a little faster, so that’s my hope.”

Katie Kinder figured the serious head injury that recently happened to her son, Kaneland sophomore Tristan Kinder, was a freak accident. Then she read about a similarly traumatic injury to Marmion track and field throws assistant coach Eddie DeGeeter, and she no longer was so sure.

Tristan Kinder was pelted by an off-target discus while waiting for his turn to throw during the Northern Illinois Big 12 boys track and field meet May 17 at Kaneland.

Less than a week later, DeGeeter took a stray shot put to his head in another disastrous accident that drew more media attention than what happened to Tristan Kinder, a JV thrower and Kaneland sophomore from Sugar Grove.

“In a six-day time span to have two very serious accidents, I was like, ‘This is not good,’ ” Katie Kinder said. “I wanted my kid to be in track because I thought it was a safe sport. Silly me.”

DeGeeter was hospitalized after his head injury occurred at Friday’s sectional meet in Elgin. Doctors expect a full recovery, Cadets head coach Dan Thorpe said, but DeGeeter’s injuries required treatment in the intensive care unit at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital.

Tristan Kinder, meanwhile, faces reconstructive surgery Thursday at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, in which a fake bone will be put under Tristan Kinder’s eye and a titanium plate inserted in his cheek, according to his mother.

According to an incident report from Kaneland, the accident happened as “Tristan was waiting behind the safety net to throw some warm-up throws in the discus ring. Another athlete threw his discus toward/ into the netting. The discus struck the metal pole, took an odd bounce, ricocheted back into the netting and struck Tristan in the face.”

Katie Kinder was in the stands as the harrowing scene unfolded.

“He was unconscious for about a minute and when he regained consciousness, he was very calm, and pretty quickly I knew he was OK at the moment, but the ambulance got there right away

Mickey Goetz, St. Charles North North plated two more runs in the fourth and held the Blazers in the fifth to earn a 12-2 run-rule victory to move on to the regional championship.

“We watched them Monday and they were aggressive and we thought they were solid,” Poulin said. “We gave them an extra out in back-toback innings and in between innings there after they tied it up, we told them to tighten up and treat this like a tournament game and have that tournament mindset.”

North (22-8) quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run homer from Alex Millett. The junior ripped an inside offering from Addison

Trail pitcher Crystal Marinelli deep over the left-field fence that gave the North Stars an early lead.

Besides an infield error, Rabin had no trouble with the Blazers for the first two innings.

In the third, Rabin walked nine-batter Nicolette Napoli before a two-out infield error on an Ari Renc grounder kept the inning alive for Danielle Ciaglia.

Ciaglia flared a Rabin pitch to center that scored Napoli. On the play, Ciaglia drew a throw to second that allowed Renc to scamper home. Renc barely avoided the tag from Millett that tied the game at 2.

“We were letting the ball play us a little bit and it’s a fast infield,” Poulin said.

“The ball was kind of coming at us and we were backing up. It was good to kind of get some experience. After that, that was a nice inning we put together.”

North immediately responded by sending 11 players to the plate, scoring eight runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

Mickey Goetz led off the frame with a walk and scored on an RBI single from Erin Nemetz. On the same play, the Addison Trail center fielder over-ran the ball that allowed both Abby Howlett (reached via error) and Kait-

lyn Waslawski (hit-by-pitch) to score.

Goetz came up later in the inning and rifled a triple to deep right that scored Jordyn Wolfe (single) and Andrea Beal (walk). Goetz finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. “We were a little mad that they got it to 2-2, so we just wanted to come back and get another chance at it,” Goetz said. “Coach says to not think about anything at the plate so that’s what I try to do.”

North added a pair of runs in the fourth after RBI hits from Nemetz and Beal made it 12-2. Rabin worked around an infield single and fielders-choice in the top of the fifth to put away the Blazers by mercy-rule.

North will play the winner of today’s Glenbard West vs.

Bartlett contest.

North has experience against both schools, with a 3-2 win against Bartlett earlier in the season.

Martin’s homer aids Cougars in victory over Chiefs Six-game road trip starts for team in Clinton KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Trey Martin picked a good day to hit his first home run of the year, as he connected on the Cougars’ first grand slam of the season. Martin’s bases-clearing homer was the difference in the ballgame as the Cougars

(35-17) swept the Peoria Chiefs (27-24) by a score of 5-4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Martin’s slam came in the seventh inning, which featured a lot of momentum changes for both teams. Trailing 2-1, Jordan Hankins doubled to put runners at second and third.

David Bote came to the plate with a chance to give the Cougars the lead, but Jacob Rogers was picked off at third base. Bote drew a walk to put runners at first and second, before Shawon Dunston Jr. recorded an infield single to

load the bases. Then Martin pulled a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall giving the Cougars a 5-2 lead.

P e o r i a chipped away with a run in the eighth inning on Carson Kelly’s solo shot. Tyler Bremer took Trey Martin the mound as the Chiefs continued to threaten with two on and one out, but a strike out by Michael Schulze was followed with Mason Katz being caught

at third base to end the inning with the Cougars leading, 5-3.

The ninth quickly became dramatic as Peoria loaded the bases with one out. Bremer then walked Kelly to force in a run, bringing the Chiefs within one. Peoria wasn’t able to finish off the rally, though, as Mason Katz and Kenny Peoples-Walls both struck out to end the ballgame.

ADDISON – For two-anda-half innings Tuesday afternoon at the Addison Trail regional, St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin’s intuition proved correct.

On Monday, Poulin watched Addison Trail demolish Larkin 17-0 to set up Tuesday’s meeting with North on the Blazers’ home field.

North staked starter Sabrina Rabin a 2-0 lead after one inning but some timely Addison Trail hits and some sloppy play in the field from North allowed the Blazers to tie the score at 2 in the third.

While Poulin was right to respect the Blazers, he also knew his team is a veteran squad with plenty of playoff experience. After Addison Trail tied the score, the North Stars came alive in the bottom of the inning, batting around and putting an eight spot on the board.

“We were a little mad that they got it to 2-2 so we just wanted to come back and get another chance at it. Coach [Tom Poulin] says to not think about anything at the plate so that’s what I try to do.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Both the skies and the scoreboard looked ominous for the Geneva softball team as the Vikings started their at-bat in the top of the seventh in Tuesday’s IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal.

Geneva trailed Waubonsie Valley, 6-4, and lightning from a thunderstorm suspended play for a second time. By the time the storm had passed, officials decided the field was unplayable and the game was called, giving Waubonsie the victory.

“I can’t think of a worse way to lose, to be honest with you,”

Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “It’s a rough way to go but it’s the rules so you have to live by it.”

“It definitely was a strange way to end the game,” Waubonsie coach Valerie Wood said.

Geneva, which was the visiting team because of its 11th seed in the Oswego Sectional, appeared to be on the verge of scoring more runs when McKenna Schimmel led off the seventh inning with a double.

But with a 1-1 count on Sarah Baurer, the next batter, play was stopped.

“I told the girls the thing that was the most frustrating was that I thought we had two runs in us and I thought we

were going to have a chance to get back on the field again,” Dierks said. “The girls were very disappointed when I told them that we were done.”

The Vikings (21-13) have shown the ability to rally late in games this season.

“We had a runner on second and nobody out so we could have definitely come back and scored at least two runs to tie it,” senior Jenelle Reilly said.

“It’s a hard way to end the season and my high school career.”

Waubonsie, seeded fifth in the sectional, plated three runs in bottom of the first to take a lead.

The junior’s homer, which bounced off the left field foul pole, was her third of the year.

“I heard it but I didn’t see it,” Geary said of her home run. “It gave us a boost into the next inning and we started playing with more confidence after that.”

The Warriors (27-7) added a run in the fourth on starting pitcher Shannon Hohman’s solo home run.

Momentum seemed to swing Geneva’s way after the first lightning delay in the bottom of the fifth. The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs on relief pitcher Emily Plocins-

ki on a walk and two singles.

The junior, who came on in relief of starting pitcher Rachel Fanella in the second, got out of the inning without Waubonsie scoring a run on a force out, strikeout and a groundout.

In the top of the sixth, Geneva tied the game 4-4 on freshman Annika Radabaugh’s two-run homer to center, her program-record 11th of the season. Waubonsie reclaimed the lead, 6-4, in its half of the seventh with two runs that proved to be the difference.

“It’s a hard way to go down considering we put up a good fight,” Geary said. “It’s hard we didn’t get to finish the game out.”

“Obviously, a 1-0 loss in the sectional semifinal is something tough to deal with,” Royals coach Brian Frank said. “I was proud with how the team played. We were short-handed coming in and still beat up, but we have been beat up the whole season.”

In the first half, Rosary and DeKalb fought through a midfield battle. There were a total of seven shots in the half and two shots on target for the two teams combined. Things started to open up in the second half.

SOFTBALL IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional: Sycamore’s chances of pulling off a big upset against Burlington Central in the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinals were throttled quickly. The Rockets, the top seed, got six runs in the first inning on their way to a 12-0, five-inning win over the fifth-seeded Spartans.

Central (22-9) had its first six batters score runs in the first inning. The Rockets were

able to get on base and score in a number of different ways, using solid hitting and speed.

The Rockets added three more runs in the second thanks to an Emily Kisch three-run homer against Sycamore starter Taylor Zak, who took the loss, and got another in the third and two more in the fourth.

“Last week, we had a great practice after our loss to DeKalb,” Central coach Wade Maisto said. “ … Wednesday and Thursday, our defense was really good. When we are playing our defense like we’re playing right now, we’re playing a different level. And it’s nice, I’m getting some good swings from different people.”

Central advances to Saturday’s regional championship game, where the Rockets will play the winner of today’s semifinal between Kaneland and Genoa-Kingston.

There was a couple people who drove down to come and watch me run, and it was really nice, because it’s weird going down there as the only competitor of your school. But it was really nice that they came down to watch me run, because I feel like I ran even better.

Shea McClellin was the staring left end last year but now finds himself in the battle of his career with Jonathan Bostic for the starting SAM linebacker spot.

It is Briggs who will be counted on to lead the renaissance.

Asked how he and his teammates will approach getting the defense turned around, Briggs said, “You’ve got to move forward. There are a lot of things that we’re really going to have to correct this year. As far as last year, our tackling was really bad.

I mean everything we did pretty much was atrocious, so you know everything we’re doing now is to not just correct that, but to get better and get ourselves back to being that top-five defense.”

It started with a roster makeover that delivered new projected starters Jared Allen, Willie Young, Lamarr Houston and Ryan Mundy via free agency, the resigning of veteran free-agents Williams, Tillman, Jennings and Jeremiah Ratliff and the drafting of Kyle Fuller, Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton.

But it’s those new and recycled vets who have Briggs’ juices flowing.

“There are a lot of good veterans out there. It’s nice to see Jay Ratliff back; it’s nice to see Jared Allen, some

of these other guys, Willie, Lamarr, it’s great to have that veteran presence in the defensive huddle, I think that’s important.”

Briggs added, “The veterans we’ve brought in, they’re leaders. They’ve been leaders everywhere they’ve been, and being here, veterans understand what you’ve got to do, these guys know what they’ve got to do and they’re going to get it done.”

Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker also has promised some scheme adjustments are in the works, but Briggs is less certain now what to expect from those changes.

“I have an idea, but it’s still going to come down to running to the ball,” Briggs said “You know, get the guy down and get the ball away from him. We’re going to see ball and I’m going to hit ball.”

That is something Bears fans know they can count on Briggs to do, and he clearly was in much better shape physically to do it on the first day of OTAs than he was when he returned from his shoulder injury late last season.

How well Briggs and his new defensive teammates rebound will determine whether this club can take another step forward in Year 2 of the Trestman regime, and whether or not the Briggs era will continue in Chicago.

Aurora Central Catholic sophomore Karina Liz delivered a Class 2A championship in the 800 meters at Saturday’s girls track and field state meet in Charleston. Her winning time of 2:10.73 earned her a 2A state record and honors as the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week. Liz, who now will prepare for AAU summer competition, spoke with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about her feat. Here’s an edited transcript of their conversation:

OTA stands for organized team activity, and they are supposed to be quite different from minicamps, training camps and practices. But as the NFL has evolved in recent seasons, there really is only one difference.

Organized team activities are completely voluntary.

Of course choosing not to come to play with your teammates at OTAs is a great way to find yourself in the unemployment line come August, but it is a chance every player is free to take.

Last year all the focus at OTAs was on the offense with the arrival of offensive savant Marc Trestman, and a Bears offense desperately in need of a trip to the 21st century.

To the delight of most Bears fans, Trestman and his troops took them on that ride, but along the way the Bears’ once monstrous defense became one of the worst in the league.

So the focus at the Bears’ first 2014 OTA on Tuesday was squarely on the defense that literally will feature only one constant – Lance Briggs.

It is likely that when the defense lines up for the first snap of the 2014 season against the Buffalo Bills, Briggs, D.J. Williams and Charles Tillman will be the only starters from last season in the same positions, and they also will be in the final years of their contracts.

Tim Jennings will be starting again but could be at the nickelback, and although Tillman and Williams are back, their futures with the club

‘The Immigrant’: Sisters yearn to breathe free

By JOHN DEFORE Special To The Washington Post Signaling the nature of its story from the very first frame, James Gray’s “The Immigrant” shows the Statue of Liberty with its back turned to us, blind to the hardships its title character will suffer in her attempt to accept that famous “huddled masses” invitation.

Lady Liberty will appear later in perverted form, the embodiment of what this young Polish woman must do to survive in a land bent on exploiting her. But even when using symbols that are as obvious as those found in the century-old melodramas his characters would have consumed, Gray directs this handsome and evocative film with emotional restraint, making its archetypal title character a living individual whose moral journey is never simple.

Marion Cotillard plays that woman, Ewa, who arrives at Ellis Island in 1921 with her tubercular sister, Magda. Officials quarantine Magda, as the sisters feared, but they deny entry to Ewa as well; someone, it appears, has spread rumors about her behavior on the long voyage from Europe. She “may be a woman of low morals,” a clerk coldly says, and in any event, the aunt and un-

cle who had promised to host her aren’t here, and “we do not allow unescorted women into this country.”

Frightened and confused, Ewa finds help from a mysterious, well-dressed stranger. Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) is the kind of man who knows how to circumvent bureaucracy; he gets her off the island and to the Lower East Side, where he seems to be a prince of the tenements. The emcee at a raucous little place called the Bandits’ Roost, he works with vaudevillians and a flock of female entertainers he calls “my doves.” He welcomes Ewa with a generosity that arouses suspicions (for both viewers and the heroine) despite his obvious sincerity.

Bruno is a pimp. And although he had different things in mind for Ewa, he is soon showing her that selling herself is the only way she’ll earn enough money to bribe guards and get Magda out of quarantine.

Phoenix makes this reluctant seducer a fascinatingly complex character, genuinely confused about the entwinement of generosity and possessiveness, who becomes violently unpredictable when another man enters the picture.

Bruno’s cousin Emil (Jeremy Renner), a Houdini-like illusionist, woos Ewa

in a straightforward way Bruno can’t, fueling a rivalry that disrupts the entire Bandits’ Roost environment.

The movie’s re-creation of 1921 New York feels lived-in, its saloons and street life as period-specific as, say, those in “Once Upon a Time in America,” without straining to impress us with their authenticity.

Cotillard’s performance is similarly unshowy: Bottled-up Ewa doesn’t advertise her desperation or weep over necessary sins; she does what her situation requires. Cotillard’s eyes reveal both hardness and fear. Only toward the end does her perspective widen, allowing the character to defend her own behavior to outsiders in a position to judge.

“I am learning the power of forgiveness,” she tells one, perhaps not realizing how broadly that power applies.

So many players in this tale require mercy, from themselves and each other.

Whether the god Ewa prays to sees anything to forgive is another matter.

• “The Immigrant” received threeand-a half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains sexual content, nudity and some strong language. It runs 120 minutes.

Dear Something’s Not Right: How sad for Chloe. Michelle’s relationship with her daughter is more “smotherhood” than motherhood. It’s not healthy for either of them. Your friend appears to be unable to see Chloe as separate from herself – which is why she wants them to dress like twins and becomes anxious when Chloe is with friends instead of by her side.

The kindest thing you could do for the young woman would be to tell her to discuss this with a licensed mental health professional, because she will need help and support in severing the umbilical cord at this late date.

That won’t be easy. There will be pain involved for both Chloe and her desperately possessive mother, but if Chloe is going to have an independent life, it has to happen.

Losing weight can reverse the course of Type 2 diabetes. It does so by making your cells more sensitive to insulin. Weight loss can also help prevent long-term diabetes-related health problems.

These include heart disease and damage to the nerves, kidneys and eyes.

How does losing weight help make your cells more sensitive to insulin and thereby lower your blood sugar levels? One theory is that your fat cells make a hormone that then travels in the blood and causes cells to resist the effect of insulin. The fatter your fat cells get, the more of this hormone is produced. One candidate hormone called “resistin”

has been discovered, and its role in causing insulin resistance is being studied.

Regular exercise promotes weight loss by burning calories.

Even if regular exercise does not cause you to lose weight, it decreases your insulin resistance. Recently, another hormone called “irisin” was discovered here at Harvard Medical School. When you exercise, your muscles make more of this hormone. As a result, you burn more fat.

Lately Matthew has been writing that he thinks he loves me and that he would like us to go steady even though we have never met each other. He says that he is coming to visit me when he graduates from high school in two years.

This week we are studying “finessing against partner” by third hand. This happens when that defender plays a card lower than his highest. This was the rule I gave yesterday: When dummy has one honor, third hand holds a higher honor, and dummy plays low, (normally) third hand saves his honor when he can insert a nine or higher.

However, as you know, there always seem to be exceptions to the rule. The most common is highlighted by today’s deal.

South is in four spades. West leads the club three. What should happen?

North made a game-invitational limit raise, promising at least four-card spade support with 10-12 support points (high-card points plus short-suit points) and eight losers (here, two spades, one heart, two diamonds and three clubs). South has just enough to try for the game bonus.

West’s normal lead is a low club. It is true that if this saves declarer a guess in the suit, a trump start would probably have been safer. But usually it is better to defend actively, not passively.

If East puts in his club nine at trick one, declarer will win with his 10 and drive out the spade ace. East can then return a low club, but South will put up his king, knowing that West wouldn’t lead away from an ace at trick one. Declarer would lose only one spade, one heart and one club.

Let’s go back to the first trick and have East win it with his club ace, then lead back the nine (the higher of two remaining cards). Now South must lose one spade, one heart and two clubs.

St. Gall has plans for celebration ELBURN – The Rev. Tim Seigel has big plans for a prayer vigil, set for the first Friday night in June at St. Gall Catholic Church, 120 W. Shannon St., Elburn.

In a video sent out to parishioners, Seigel, the pastor of St. Gall, is inviting those interested to attend the event, which will run from 8 to 9 p.m. June 6. The event is a Pentecost Prayer Vigil. I am a member of St. Gall.

“We will pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon us, to enflame us, inspire us with wisdom, embolden us with the Gospel, the good news of God’s love,” Seigel said.

Those who gather will light candles inside the church and head out for the event.

He said the church’s guitar group has agreed to perform, but that participants also “could just stand in silence along Highway 47 and be living signs, advertising the goodness of our faith community.”

“We’re celebrating the birthday of the church in a more aggressive way,” Seigel wrote in a follow-up email.

Kaneland Krier honors Staff members of the Kaneland Krier, the student newspaper at Kaneland High School, were honored recently by the Northern Illinois School Press Association.

The Krier earned a bronze certificate for excellence in journalism.

Also, Courtney Diddell earned a blue ribbon in column writing, and Gabby Cano received a blue ribbon in feature writing.

Honorable mentions were received by Katrina Paulick (individual in-depth writing), Michelle McCracken (review writing), Amelia Likeum (photography), Kristin Staub (editorial writing) and Felicia Steik (advertis-

ing design).

Also, the Krier earned awards at an Illinois High School Association journalism sectional event at Northern Illinois University.

Jack Coyle was second in review writing; Likeum placed fourth in photography; Samantha Schrepferman was fourth in headline writing; and Nick Boose was fifth in news writing.

Also, the Krier announced that Boose, its editor in chief, was appointed to the Illinois State Journalism Team. He is to be given his award June 7 in Springfield.

Kaneland’s GIVE program Kaneland High School recognized students who participated in its GIVE program, which stands for “generosity involves volunteer effort.”

The school recognized two levels of achievement – those with at least 40 hours of volunteer service and those with at least 80 hours of service.

The hours could be accumulated through work done with organized service projects sponsored by Scout groups, churches or other organizations. They also may

be earned for work at school.

Students had to log hours of service and have the log sheet signed off by a supervising adult, class sponsor or class president.

Those with at least 80 hours of service included Steven Becker, Lesly Chavez, Sarah Goodacre, Tyler Hill, Sam Kitz, Ryan Koeppen, Jarod Kovach, Rachel Mathys, John Purnell, Laszlo Reed, Rob Simmons and Aaron Steenwyck.
