SG library to celebrate summer reading SUGAR GROVE – A horse demonstration, Ozzie T. Cougar and a live band will help kick off the Sugar Grove Public Library’s summer reading program.

The free events will be part of the kickoff party, set to start at 11 a.m. June 6 at the library, 125 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove.

Jennifer Stasinopoulos, the kids library manager, said the day will be packed with activities.

“It’s a pretty big event,” Stasinopoulos said.

The summer reading program’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story,” and the opening party will include a Super Hero Training Camp, running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kids can make a super hero mask and cape, as well as other crafts. She said there will be walls made with blocks, so participants can break through the wall, as a hero might.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla will be other hero-themed events throughout the program during the summer, including community heroes, emergency vehicles and therapy dogs.

One event on June 6 will be dependent on favorable weather. Horse Heroes is from 1 to 2 p.m. It will feature a special demonstration that includes four horses and their riders.

Stasinopoulos said the event would not take place in rainy weather.

Ozzie The Cougar, the mascot for the Kane County Cougars, will show up at the June 6 kickoff party, with photo opportunities available from 2 to 3 p.m.

Also, live music will be performed from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Band members from Tone Deft and Cadillac Groove will perform.

The event is free, and participants will not have to enter the summer reading program.

However, Stasinopoulos is hopeful for a big turnout.

Last year’s kickoff party featured Mr. Freeze of Fermilab, and she said it drew about 100. Last year’s summer reading program had more than 500 people register.

This year, there will be an adult category for the reading program, as well. There also will be prizes for three categories – kindergarten through fifth grade, teenagers and adults.

Elburn library reading program The Town and Country Public Library will

start its summer reading program on Monday. This year’s theme is “Read to the Rhythm.” The program runs through Aug. 8 at the library, which is at 320 E. North St., Elburn. The program will feature prizes and events throughout the summer.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, musical guest Dave Rudolf will perform. According to a news release, he will play “everything from conga lines to limbo.” All are invited.

At 1:30 p.m. June 5, magician Gary Kantor will perform. At 2:30 p.m., he will have a one-hour magic workshop. Those interested in the workshop should register.

D-302 associate superintendent to serve on school business officials’ board

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland School District 302 Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs has been officially installed as a member of the board of directors for the Illinois Association of School Business Officials.

Fuchs has been a member of the organization for 10 years. After she serves her three-year term, Fuchs can seek to be elected to one of its four officer positions, said Julie Warner, a director for human resources for the ASBO. Fuchs will begin her term as one of the board’s nine members in July, Warner said.

“She will be looked up to by her peers,” Warner said.

“Whenever anyone has

problems, they go through the board of directors.”

In a statement, Fuchs stated she applied to be on the board to give back to the professional organization that has benefited her so much.

“The learning and opportunities through Illinois ASBO have made a significant positive impact on my professional career,” Fuchs stated. “By being actively involved, I have access to resources, colleagues and information that I wouldn’t have access to.”

The association has about 2,500 members, 500 of which are company members that provide services to members, Warner said.

“We provide opportunities for professional development to help them

in their positions,” Warner said.

Fuchs also served as

chair of the Fox River Valley Regional Organization for six years.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A woman is being remembered this week for all of the help she gave to St. Charles residents.

A memorial Mass for Dorothy Ann “Dorie” Maller will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m.

Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 400 Cedar St., St. Charles.

Maller died May 4 at the age of 90.

“She was very passionate about her work, very passiona t e a b o u t Dorothy Ann p e o p l e , ” “Dorie” Maller said Maryann Farley, Maller’s only daughter and youngest of three children.

Maller moved to St. Charles in 1948 after a period where she worked as a nurse in California, according to her obituary.

Once she retired from the St. Charles Post Office after 21 years in 1985, she was restless and looking for ways to help others, said Stephen Schnulle, Maller’s oldest of

three children. Maller began to drive seniors to their doctor’s appointments and to pick up groceries.

Although she kept busy, Farley said Maller always made time for her family.

Farley’s children always wanted Maller to baby-sit them.

“Grandma Dorie is the best grandma that ever lived,” wrote Deanna Nietzel in an undated Easter letter to Maller, her grandmother.

Schnulle said Maller was religious and was a Eucharistic minister at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Maller always gave God credit for her recovery, including an accident that left her temporarily paralyzed and a battle against cancer, her obituary states.

Before her death, Maller revealed the location of a series of notes about her life to Farley. Farley thinks one of the notes was written after Maller’s mother, Genevieve LaBart, died in 1991 because it said “take time to mourn and get on with your life.”

“Some of this was a surprise to me – she is talking to me from heaven,” Farley said of Maller.

Tenth Annual ‘Sweetness’ Run/Walk to honor Pat Hill

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – A June 6 event will raise money in part for Kaneville’s village president, who is fighting stage 4 breast cancer.

The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation 10th Annual Kendall County “Sweetness” 5K-8K Run/Walk will be June 6 at Yorkville Grade School, 201 W. Somonauk St., Yorkville.

Participants who designate “Pat Hill” as their team name on the registration form will allow her to receive part of their registration fee to assist with her cancer battle. The cost to register is $40 until the day of the race, when registration increases to $45.

The foundation staff knows Pat Hill and her family through their involvement with the foundation’s various

drives for children and veterans, said Alexa Hill, Pat Hill’s daughter.

“It was really sweet of them to think of her,” Alexa Hill said Tuesday.

“She was very honored.”

She said she and a few other people have signed Pat Hill up for the run/walk at the family’s Hill’s Country Store – better known as “the Purple Store” for its exterior color – in Kaneville.

Pat Hill in fall 2014 announced she had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Earlier this year, she said there were no longer measurable levels of cancer in her body, but she still is receiving treatments to maintain her

Driscoll, a Batavia resident, figured he was a pretty handy guy who liked to do some home repairs, and – after doing some research – discovered that Ace was the place.

He looked at potential locations for his Ace Hardware store, which also includes a separate entrance for pet supply products, before settling on his “No. 1 area” – 160 E. Galena Blvd. in Sugar Grove, near the village’s Sugar Grove Center that also includes Jewel, McDonald’s and several other businesses.

Driscoll’s Ace store opened last September, and he said he has been happy with the result and support of the community.

“I can’t tell you how many people each week tell us how excited they are that we’re here,” Driscoll said.

As the potential for population growth appears to pick up in the Kaneland area – particularly in Sugar Grove and Elburn – some are focusing on how the villages’ leaders can attract new businesses. There have been community surveys, which indicate a desire for family-style restaurants and department stores in both towns, a hardware store in Elburn and automobile service and parts stores in Sugar Grove. There have been recent openings in Sugar Grove (Ace, McDonald’s, Walgreens) and Elburn (Dunkin’ Donuts). Among other franchise businesses, Elburn also has a McDonald’s, Walgreens and Subway. Sugar Grove also has a Subway and a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop. Both have a Rosati’s Pizza location.

Leaders in the villages

said it can be a difficult and long process to attract such businesses. Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said the village sought for more than 15 years to bring in the McDonald’s restaurant. And he said the task of bringing in businesses has become more difficult since the 2008 Great Recession.

“People think that we’re here, and businesses will come,” Michels said, adding that’s not always the case.

He said attracting the McDonald’s was significant. He said other businesses pay attention to McDonald’s because of the detailed, demographic-analysis work the company does.

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett has been in her position since 2008. She said businesses are looking at criteria, such as daytime and nighttime population; miles traveled through town; proximity to interstates; and population density in a radius, rather than specifically a village’s population. She said they look at EAVs (equalized assessed valuation) and median household incomes.

“If it’s going to be a franchise, they will have franchise requirements,” she said, adding “since the downturn in 2008, franchise requirements have gotten a lot stricter.”

Sometimes, Willrett said, it’s a matter of drawing interest from an owner of several successful franchises. The Elburn Dunkin’ Donuts opened in October. The location’s owner, Vishal Vaghani, indicated it was his 11th Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in the region.

Since Driscoll also worked for Jewel, he can speak about the locations that opened in Sugar Grove and Elburn.

In Sugar Grove, there was the recent approval of a tax increment financing district, by a 3-2 vote of the Sugar Grove Village Board, that had drawn vocal opposition.

Proponents said such incentives are important tools, as attracting new businesses can be difficult. Those against the TIF argued it would deny other taxing bodies revenue from improvements. Willrett said the idea of using a TIF in Elburn “is nothing that the village has ever explored.”

In Elburn, most businesses are located near Route 47 and Route 38. The village’s population is nearly 6,000, but the Elburn Station development, which is to be built over 20 years, could push that past 10,000. Some new business development could come in the Elburn Station area, which is near the Metra station in the village, east of Route 47 and south of Route 38.

In the meantime, Willrett said any empty buildings in town can provide “opportunities for people to fill a need that people know of, or fill a need that people may not know.” Also, she said, businesses can do more than help boost sales tax.

“There is also a philanthropic area,” she said, adding, “They are part of a business community.”

In Sugar Grove, Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger and Michels provided written answers for some questions about attracting businesses to the village.

They wrote bringing in businesses to Sugar Grove helps with tax revenue, but there are additional benefits. Employees of a business will shop and dine in the community. They may choose to live in the community. And businesses will work with other businesses. Also, school districts benefit because businesses provide property taxes but do not place demands for service on the school district.

“There are some estimates that for every dollar of sales in a community, there is an $8 to $10 economic benefit to the local economy,” they wrote. “Then there is the mat-

They wrote of some selling points – Sugar Grove’s population of nearly 10,000 and growing, an additional 50,000 people living within a few miles of the village, and being the home for the main campus of Waubonsee Community College. Also, officials point to water, sewer and road infrastructure that is in place.

They wrote that the village is experiencing “a noticeable increase in new home starts, and indications are that the trend will continue.” They wrote of businesses’ successes, adding the McDonald’s “has outperformed expectations” and “other businesses have had similar success.”

“We believe there is opportunity for a lot more success stories in Sugar Grove,” they wrote.

At the high school level, more than half of 382 high school-level staff members surveyed listed “stay the same” as their most desired school start time option, said Audra Christenson, St. Charles North’s principal.

The only scheduling change at this point will be a switch from late start days beginning this fall at St. Charles East and North high schools to an early release instead, Schlomann said.

BATAVIA D-101 board approves increase to pay for Chromebooks

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia School District 101 Board Tuesday night voted, 4-2, to approve increasing student registration fees by $75 for kindergarten students, as well as first- to fifth-graders to offset the cost of buying Chromebooks for the students.

Voting “yes” were Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, Vice President Jason Stoops and board members Tina Bleakley and Chris Lowe. Voting “no” were board members Jon Gaspar and John Dryden.

Board member Sue Locke was absent from the meeting.

The Chromebooks stay at school, Anton Inglese, the district’s information officer, told board members.

Both Gaspar and Dryden voiced concerns about the increase. A $75 increase will set kindergarten fees at $135 and $155 for first to fifth grades.

“It is a lot of money if they are going to be in-house all the time,” Gaspar said.

Dryden said he was concerned about the impact of the increase on working families.

Stoops said different payment options are available to families to reduce the financial burden of the increase.

He said the $75 increase was not arrived at arbitrarily.

“There has been a lot of forethought,” he said.

The Batavia School Board last year approved a $1 million lease with U.S. Bank Equipment Finance Technology Group so the district could buy Chromebooks for all students in sixth to 12th grades.

Board members had previously voted, 5-2, to approve the district’s 21st Century Learning Plan, with Gaspar and then board member Gregg Hodge voting “no.” The plan called for the district to provide a personal device to all students within two years.

In addition, the plan increased student registration fees by $75 for sixths to 12th grades, boosting fees for Batavia middle school students to $165 a year and to $194 a

year for the district’s high school students.

Aldermen approve study of sewer siphon on east side

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously recommended approval Tuesday to have consultants evaluate the Short Street Sanitary Sewer Siphon, which was constructed in the 1950s on Geneva’s east side.

The sewer siphon conveys sanitary sewer from properties west of East Side Drive and north of Good Templar Park across the Fox River, officials said.

The siphon consists of an eight-inch pipe connecting structures on each side of the Fox River, officials said. The pipe is always full, as sewage must accumulate in the manhole on

the east side of the river to push flow to the west side.

Aldermen recommended paying Baxter and Woodman $28,780 to dewater the existing siphon and structures to allow video inspection of the existing pipe. The video inspection will be used to determine if rehabilitation of the siphon is required and the recommended improve ments.

The evaluation is necessary because of recent sewer overflows during heavy rain caused a sewer backup into a house, coupled with no information that an evaluation has been done since it was installed, officials said.

The city council will take final action.

ST. CHARLES – Despite the concerns of some parents, there will be no changes to St. Charles School District 303 start times for the 2015-16 school year.

The school board’s Community Relations Committee on Tuesday met to discuss the possibility of a daily later school starting time in the district.

The committee did not recommend any immediate start time changes due in part to forthcoming information from St. Charles Superintendent Don Schlomann. He briefly mentioned his plans to make a presentation at the school board’s regular monthly meeting in June that addresses declining enrollment.

Other schedule changes

might be recommended for the 2016-17 school year, and the school board will have to decide how to proceed, Schlomann said.

During the meeting, Schlomann said at some point he would like to explore the possibility of switching the high school start times with those at the middle school level.

He also said moving the high school start times 20 minutes later than the current 7:20 a.m. start time would not have any financial impact, but the committee did not recommend that change.

“I think 20 minutes would make a difference – I wish they would have agreed,” St. Charles parent Sarah Vetter said after the meeting.

They were married on August 19, 1950, and moved to Geneva, Illinois for Ken’s job as a teacher and then principal at Harrison Street School.

She served at the first banquet held at Pheasant Run and continued working there for 35 years making many friends and seeing many changes at the resort.

Marge and Ken were active members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church until 1969, when they moved to St. Charles and St. Patrick’s parish.

They served as literacy volunteers and enjoyed dancing with the Cotillion Club for many years.

A wonderful cook and homemaker, Mimi made pies from scratch, hosted scores of summer family picnics, and passed on dozens of recipes and kitchen tips especially to her seven granddaughters.

In a poem written for her 80th birthday, Mimi was described by her late husband as, “generous, selfless, courageously strong ... faithful Christian, nurturing guardian ... source of all that is good and pure, God’s gift to each of us.”

Dianne P. Hunz, age 75, of Geneva passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born July 20, 1939, in Calumet City, Illinois, the daughter of John and Wanda (Wojtak) Miniuk.

Dianne worked for many years as a sales clerk for Shell Oil and later for Marshall Fields from which she retired after 25 years. She loved cooking and gardening, and found great joy in spending time with her family. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Dianne is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Roger; daughter, Patricia (Jim) Hullinger of River Forest; son, William of Geneva; grandchildren, Ella and Henry Hullinger; sisters, Barbara (Jim) Scott and Connie (Elden) Hass both of Indiana; brothers, John (Beatrice) Miniuk of Plainfield and Robert (Jacquelyn) Miniuk of Arizona; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

Grant helps fund healthy lifestyle education PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Felkamp The Batavia Park District wants kids to get outside and play this summer. Local kids have a variety of options available for outdoor play, including Hall Quarry Beach, their neighborhood park, sports classes and summer camps. And this summer, in addition to encouraging active play, park district staff will be using a PowerPlay!

Grant to incorporate nutrition and health into summer programs.

Last month, the district was notified it had received the $1,000 grant, which is administered by the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

The program focuses on health, nutrition and fitness for children ages 5 to 13.

Grant recipients must incorporate the core elements of the model program into their curriculum.

“The goal of IAPD’s PowerPlay! program is to educate children about the importance of incorporating health, fitness and smart nutritional choices into their daily routines in order to combat the obesity epidemic plaguing today’s youth,” wrote Peter Murphy, president and CEO of the IAPD, in an email.

“Studies have shown that this is the first generation of children who may not outlive their parents because of obesity-related conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

The Batavia Park District is a shining example of how park and recreation agencies are stepping in to address this issue with healthful programming tailored specifically for children.”

“The PowerPlay! Grant program is designed to provide positive beyond-school programs for youth ages 5 to 13,” according to the IAPD. “Beyond-school programs keep youth safe and give them supervised and structured activities. The Illinois Association of Park Districts created the grant program to provide financial assistance to communities in Illinois for the development of beyond-school

“The biggest benefit of this grant is its ability to lend us extra support in educating our youth about their own health and good decision-making skills,” Schmit said. “These two elements will be useful for the rest of their lives.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Providing excellent programs, services To the Editor: Thank you to everyone who supported the Friends of the Town and Country Public Library’s 12th annual flower and plant sale May 8 and 9. This event was held inside the library at 320 E. North St. in Elburn.

We appreciate the support of our community making this flower and plant sale even more successful than last year. Varieties of flowers and plants of the 149 dozen sold included geraniums, gerbera daisies, tuberous begonias, petunias, ivy, coleus, spikes and sweet potatoes.

For the first time, 10-inch mixed combo hanging baskets were offered, and we sold over 50. The proceeds from this event make it possible for the library to continue to provide excellent programs and services for all ages, including the Summer Reading program – “Read to the Rhythm” – beginning June 1 and running through Aug. 8.

We look forward to next year’s flower and plant sale May 6 and 7. The Friends of the Town and Country Public Library is a volunteer-driven organization and a recognized 501(c)3.

ATF is too wounded to enforce gun-control laws BLOOMBERG NEWS Many members of Congress seem to view the U.S.’s most deadly criminals – those who carry guns – as a protected class. For decades, they’ve tried everything imaginable to cripple the agency charged with enforcing federal laws against illegal gun buying, trafficking and possession.

Meanwhile, advocates of stricter gun-law enforcement have fought a losing battle to strengthen the agency’s hand. Now, it may be time to admit defeat and change the strategy.

The ATF, as it’s known, is charged with overseeing federally licensed firearms dealers, most of whom are responsible and law-abiding – but not all. Criminals know the difference, but even when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has figured it out, it has lacked the resources and leadership to crack down.

A new report by the Center for American Progress recommends that the ATF be merged into the FBI. It’s

worth considering. It would be hard to do worse than the status quo.

The ATF has long been a political punching bag, maligned by gunrights advocates as an unnecessary intrusion on the Second Amendment.

Just last week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would stop the ATF from requiring licensed gun dealers in four border states – where Mexican gun-running is a problem – to report when someone buys multiple semi-automatic rifles. Merging the ATF into the FBI wouldn’t stop this sort of meddling, but the FBI director would be in a stronger position to rebuff it.

The ATF has been a target for Republicans – and many Democrats, too – ever since 1980, when presidential candidate Ronald Reagan promised to abolish it.

They’ve had plenty to point at: The agency has a record of poor management, although Congress is partly to blame for making it go years without an executive director. During Presi-

dent Barack Obama’s first term, when the ATF badly botched an investigation into gun trafficking across the Mexican border, criticism reached a fever pitch, and has barely abated since.

Merging into the FBI might push the ATF out of the congressional crosshairs. The FBI, for all its troubles, is generally well-regarded by both parties, and its reputation could give the enforcement of gun laws greater credibility.

True, a merger would carry risks.

Layering a poorly run organization onto one that works reasonably well could lower morale and harm performance. It could also distract the FBI from its most important work, including counterterrorism.

There’s no doubt it would be a mammoth management challenge, but the two agencies have missions that are largely compatible, and a merger would streamline their overlapping responsibilities. The FBI and ATF both target violent street

gangs. They both oversee forensic training programs for explosives, and operate forensic labs to process evidence from violent crimes. They both have response teams trained to handle hostage and explosives-related investigations. And while the FBI operates the National Instant Criminal Background Check System used for gun sales by dealers, the ATF licenses the dealers.

Closing the ATF would allow Republicans to vanquish an old foe and declare a victory for smaller government. For Democrats, the rewards would be less certain.

There’s the chance that shielding gun-law enforcement from congressional attacks could lead it to be neglected by the FBI, the Department of Justice and the White House. But the opposite is also true: An administration committed to combating gun crimes would have some political cover to do so.

Given the ATF’s record of failure, that’s a chance worth taking.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

North Stars bounce back STC North responds to beat East in 3

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – There was an extreme lack of execution on the part of the St. Charles North boys volleyball team in the first set of its regional semifinal match against St. Charles East.

North coach Todd Weimer said there really wasn’t much of a message, other than the execution needed to be better, and then it was.

The North Stars rallied to beat East, 2-1 (13-25, 25-21, 2519) to advance to the championship match of the Geneva Regional.

“I don’t think it was so much of changing anything, really,” Weimer said. “We weren’t executing anything on our end. I have to give East a lot of credit because they took us out of our game in the first set and came out firing.”

North (23-12) got a big boost on a career day from Danny Hamilton.

The junior finished with a team- and career-high 13 kills, which was a large part of the second and third set wins for the North Stars.

Hamilton credited assistant coach Steph Gianacakos for his big performance, saying she knows exactly what to say and when to say it to get him to play well.

“She pushes me each and every day,” Hamilton said of Gianacakos. “She knows when to give me constructive criticism and when to say things to lift me up. I think just listening to what she has to say and trying to put it in full effect was a big reason for me tonight.”

Lanz. The duo was all over the court, making it very difficult for the Saints to block consistently.

Donlevy finished with 12 kills and Lanz added eight.

“I thought [Hamilton] was outstanding today,” Weimer said. “He had a career day and it was a real good time to have it. Brendan and Drew have been huge for us all year and at this point, when they put up big numbers, it doesn’t surprise me.”

East (16-19) finished with one of its strongest efforts of the season, in coach Kate McCullagh’s opinion.

After winning the first set rather decisively, the Saints allowed North to take an ear-

ly 8-1 lead in the second set.

One positive thing that East and McCullagh were able to take away from losing that second set was taking 12 of the final 15 points.

Unfortunately, Hamilton and company did not allow East to hold that momentum for too long.

“I’m never all right with ending our season, but if we have to, I’m glad it’s putting forth an effort like that,” McCullagh said. “North made some good adjustments to things we tried to do in the third [set]. It’s always a tough match when you play a rival like that.”

Weimer was clearly not pleased after the first set, but

agreed with the same point as McCullagh that in a rivalry game, in a regional environment, you don’t always play your best games.

“I don’t want to say I expected to come out slow, but it’s a rivalry game,” Weimer said. “Crazy things are going to happen, but if you can control the momentum and don’t let teams carry that momentum for too long, you will be all right. [McCullagh] has done a great job with their program and we knew we would get a tough match today.”

North will take on Geneva at 6 p.m. today for the regional championship on the Vikings’ home floor.

Buseski leads Vikings to regional final

That was the case for the Wheaton Academy boys volleyball team and trying to contain Geneva’s Nick Buseski on Tuesday night in the Geneva Regional semifinal.

The 6-foot-8 senior was unstoppable all night, as Geneva took care of the Warriors, 2-0 (25-22, 25-16).

Buseski had 18 kills in the two sets, nine in each. Wheaton Academy coach D.A. Nichols knew Buseski would be a handful, but thought his team came in fairly prepared defensively.

“We played them earlier in the year and we knew he was going to be tough,” Nichols said of Buseski. “We knew that we could hang with them, but their size is difficult for any team to deal with. They will always play big, but they played even better this time around, which is what you are supposed to do at this point in the season.”

After trailing midway through the first set, 13-11, Buseski scored kills on six of the next nine points. Although the remainder of the set went back and forth, and at one point was knotted at 22, the Vikings (19-16) scored the final three points, including Buseski’s kill on the 25th and final point of the set.

The senior outside hitter thought Wheaton Academy left Geneva some room for opportunities, which he and his teammates took advantage of in not just the first, but second set, as well.

“There was a lot of room in the middle that they left us,” Buseski said. “We realized it fairly early and my teammates gave me good passes, which made my job pretty easy. Just hitting those seams and got a lot of points off of that tonight.”

get them on our home floor for a regional title. This an opportunity that we are definitely excited for.”

Buseski felt the same, as they know what to expect from North, and, at this point, are ready for the challenge of playing the No. 1 seeded North Stars.

He also said how important

blocking would be as North has several weapons, including outside hitters Brendan Donlevy and Drew Lanz.

“It’s going to be a scrappy match,” Buseski said. “Both teams want to win badly and I think points are going to be hard to come by. We have to make sure we are at our best and come out strong. As long

as we do that, I think we have good momentum and will like our chances.”

“We were pretty good blocking at the net today,” he added. “I think that will need to continue, but, like I said, we have good momentum and we need to continue to push if we want our season to continue.”

WHEATON – Kendra Pasquale scored two goals and added an assist to help the St. Francis girls soccer team beat Nazareth Academy, 3-0, and advance to the Class 2A St. Francis Sectional championship.

The Spartans (10-3-1) controlled most of the run of play, although coach Jim Winslow didn’t believe his team played its best game.

“I think we could play much better, but defensively we played very well,” Winslow said. “We are a very young team, and have been all season, so to get a result like this, at this level, is huge for our program.”

St. Francis will take on Wheaton Academy, which beat Riverside-Brookfield, 1-0, in its sectional semifinal, in the sectional cham-

pionship at 6 p.m. Friday on the Spartans’ home field.

Wheaton Academy scored its goal in the second minute off the foot of Gretchen Pearson, and really locked down defensively to limit the chances for Riverside-Brookfield to few and far between.

As with Winslow and the Spartans, Wheaton Academy (19-3-1) coach Dave Underwood did not feel his team played its best game, but at this point a win is a win and advancing is all that matters.

“We did a lot well defensively,” Underwood said.

“We will have to play a lot better on Friday, but we did enough to advance and that’s what matters at this point.”

By CAITLIN SWIECA cswieca@shawmedia.com ROCKFORD – Kaneland coach Scott Parillo made no bones about it. His team did not put forth its best effort in Tuesday night’s Class 2A Boylan Sectional semifinal match against Prairie Ridge.

It was hard to complain too much, however, when his team came off the field excitedly chattering about the school’s first berth in the state’s sweet sixteen.

After struggling in the early going, Kaneland scored two well-timed goals off free kicks to defeat Prairie Ridge, 2-1, to advance to Friday’s sectional championship against Freeport.

“It was not our best effort for the whole game, but sometimes your best effort wins games and sometimes super effort loses games, and we’ve been on both sides of those,” Parillo said.

After all, Parillo said, his

team had dominated Rosary many times in recent years only to lose repeatedly in the regional matches. This year, his team finally broke through, and in the program’s first sectional game on Tuesday, the Knights showed they’re not satisfied just yet.

Parillo made his early-game frustration clear from the sidelines. For the first 25 minutes of the match, Prairie Ridge seemed to clear every Kaneland rush and earn scoring opportunities on the other end.

But momentum quickly shifted when Kaneland’s Kiandra Powell picked up a free kick that Prairie Ridge failed to clear, bouncing the ball off the crossbar and behind Wolves goalie Savannah Schuler-Winoker.

“It was huge because they were kind of dictating play,” Parillo said. “You could see it kind of suck the life out of them a little bit, and it gave us that second wind.”

“You’re hoping to come out of halftime getting a goal to tie it up and get some momentum to take the lead,” Prairie Ridge Coach J.C. Brown said.

“That kind of took the wind out of our sails a bit.”

Prairie Ridge played with high energy for the rest of the game, and Josie Eriksen scored the most impressive goal of the match – a strike from the left side – to cut the deficit to one with 10 minutes to go.

Prairie Ridge kept pressing, but Kaneland was able to keep its composure and survive a frantic finish.

The Knights will take the field at 6 p.m. Friday at Boylan Catholic, looking for the school’s first sectional title.

What were your expectations going to state?

I had a lot of confidence, especially liking my chances in the 800. I won it last year, but I saw the seeding times and no one was that close to mine, so I knew I had a good chance to do really well.

Two-time 800 state champion.

What’s that feel like to hear that?

How much hard work went into it?

It doesn’t really feel like I won again.

To realize I won again is a pretty great feeling to know I have another state championship. For the hard

work, I always do stuff on my own, plus practicing with the team. A lot of days I would wake up and train before school and on the weekends when we didn’t have meets.

What were your goals for running the 400 after winning the 800?

My goal was to get to finals in 400.

I’ve qualified for state in both races in my three years, but only made it to the 800 finals. I was really pleased to make that goal and getting fourth was pretty awesome, too. I also set a personal record in prelims of the 400 with a 56.18, which made me really happy as well.

Do you have plans to run at the next level? Have you gotten any interest from colleges at this time?

I get lots of letters from colleges and emails from coaches. Running in college is definitely something I want to pursue.

If you could be a professional athlete in any sport besides your own, what would it be and why?

Probably basketball. It’s a really fun sport to watch and I used to play it when I was younger.

Aurora Central Catholic junior runner Karina Liz took care of business at last week’s state track and field meet, winning her second straight 800 title, by a near four seconds. Liz, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, was a dominant runner for most of the season. The junior runner caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to talk about her thoughts about state and what’s in store for her. Here’s an edited transcript:

The game of chicken is starting to get ugly.

According to one Bulls player, exit interviews last week between the players and the front office turned into ‘‘open season on Thibs.’’

Upper management apparently had no problem making its displeasure with coach Tom Thibodeau known by its line of questioning and the discussions it had with the players.

‘‘I’d be shocked if Thibs is back,’’ the player said.

It hasn’t stopped there, either. According to a league source, Thibodeau thinks the Bulls will do all they can to make sure he’s not coaching in the NBA next season by letting the job vacancies fill up, then dismissing him with two years left on his contract.

As their season was coming to an end, it was thought the Bulls would look to trade Thibodeau for a draft pick, hoping to come out of the divorce with an asset. But

Dear Abby: I’m in my 40s, happily married to my wife, and we have teenage daughters. My parents divorced when I was young and both have been remarried for years.

Behavioral techniques can treat premature ejaculation Dear Doctor K: I’ve been experiencing premature ejaculation.

What is the most effective way to treat this?

Dear Reader: Premature ejaculation occurs when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates too quickly and without control. In other words, ejaculation occurs before a man wants it to happen.

Several factors may contribute to this problem. Diabetes, problems with the thyroid gland or inflammation of the prostate are common culprits. Stress, depression and other emotional factors can also play a role. But most men with PE are healthy.

Sometimes, PE goes away on its own. Finding ways to relieve stress or other psychological issues may help. If PE continues, treatment may involve behavioral techniques, medication or both.

My colleague Dr. Harvey Simon recommends starting with behavioral therapy. It is safe and simple, and helps about 60 to 90 percent of men. Here are three methods you can try, alone or in combination. Many people find that consulting an experienced sex therapist is helpful in learning the behavioral therapy techniques: 1. The “pause and squeeze” technique is the most effective method. When you feel an orgasm

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff developing too early, stop sexual activity. Then either you or your partner gently squeezes the shaft of the penis between the thumb and two fingers for about 20 seconds. You relax the squeeze and start sexual activity again.

This technique somehow leads the body to learn how to delay ejaculation without the squeeze.

Several of my patients say that this technique has also worked for them when the sexual activity is not actual sex with a partner, but self-stimulation.

2. The “start-stop” method.

Bring yourself close to orgasm with the aid of a partner or by self-stimulation. Before climaxing, stop, relax, and then begin again.

Repeat the cycle until you can no longer prevent ejaculation. The goal is to recognize when orgasm is about to happen and to put on the brakes.

3. Kegel exercises. Women and men use these exercises to treat urinary incontinence. They can also help men with PE. You can identify the pelvic muscles by stopping the flow of urine in

midstream. Once you’ve learned to control these muscles, you practice tightening them while your bladder is empty. You should hold each contraction for 10 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds, then repeat the cycle 10 times, three or four times a day.

As for medications, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are particularly effective.

SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa) and fluoxetine (Prozac). Some men don’t respond to an SSRI alone. If this is the case, you may get good results by also taking one of the medicines for erectile dysfunction: sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis) and avanafil (Stendra).

Another option is to apply an anesthetic (numbing cream) to the head of the penis. This decreases sensation and reduces the stimulation you experience during sex.

Some “climax control” or “extended performance” condoms apply a mild anesthetic to the penis.

It is likely that one or more of these treatments will work for you.

Don’t let pride get in way Dr. Wallace: We are having a church-sponsored dance in a couple of weeks, and I invited Cindy to go to it. I was very happy that she said yes. Even though I know her because we go to the same high school, we had never dated before.

Yesterday at school she told me that the date was still on, but that she could not ride in my car because her older brother thinks I am an unsafe driver, so her parents insist that her brother will drive us.

It is not true that I’m an unsafe driver, but if he thinks that it’s probably because my car is custom built and once in a while I “peel” out of the school parking lot. I want to go to the dance with Cindy, but I won’t be embarrassed by having her brother chauffeur us.

If I were the girl’s father, I, too, would be concerned with your poor driving habits. Spinning your tires to draw attention to yourself is a very immature act. Hire a limousine, a taxi or have a parent drive you to and from the date – and don’t allow your pride to get in the way of doing what is right.

Dr. Wallace: A girl recently wrote to you asking for information about heroin because she was dating a heroin user and she heard it was a highly addictive drug. Your answer was

You said that heroin was highly addictive, and you are 100 percent correct! From the first “fix” you are hooked, and after three days of casual use you are physically under the influence. After that, it’s all downhill. An addict will do anything, and I mean anything, to get the money for a fix. The most common method is to beg, borrow, steal or rob. The only thing the addict lives for is a fix.

May I please stress to your readers that for the initial rush of a few minutes and the high of a few hours, the price is extremely high. You will enter the world of thieves, hoodlums, gangsters, con men and losers of every race, age and sex.

Please remind your readers that if they don’t try drugs, ever, they won’t get hooked. Trying heroin for the first time always leads to the second time!

At the bridge table, if one side is laughing, the other is usually crying. Today’s deal occurred during a pairs event, where overtricks were important because each score was compared with the other pairs holding the same cards.

How should South try for the maximum in this deal? He is in four spades, and West leads the heart queen.

North used a transfer bid to show five-plus spades and at least zero points. South, with a maximum, four-card spade support and a doubleton, jumped to three spades – this is known as a superaccept. North, who had been undecided between inviting and insisting on game, now had no qualms in bidding four spades.

South saw four losers: one spade and three clubs. If he had immediately led a trump, the defenders surely would have taken those tricks.

Instead, declarer had to try to jettison those club losers. He won the first trick, cashed dummy’s diamond queen (the honor from the shorter hand first), played a diamond to his ace, discarded a club on the diamond king, and, because it could not cost, pitched another club on the diamond jack.

If it had been ruffed with a low spade, South would have broken even. Here, though, East had to ruff with his spade ace, so the contract made with an overtrick for a tied top.
