Flags fly at Kaneland ceremony About 600 attend Healing Field event

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – About 600 people gathered Monday in front of 1,000 American flags to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Two thousand more flags were set up throughout the Kaneland campus.

A Memorial Day ceremony was held on the Kaneland High School grounds north of the Healing Field along Keslinger Road. The field consisted of 1,000 flags, several of which had yellow tags attached to them containing messages that people left for veterans.

Between the ceremony and the high school building was a crane that had a large American flag raised about 100 feet in the air.

The Elburn, Sugar Grove and Maple Park American Legions each had their own Memorial Day morning ceremonies, but the afternoon ceremony was a chance for all of them to come together with the Kaneland High School band and staff, said Rudy Keller, the school’s interim athletic director and an organizer of the event.

“The Fourth of July is to celebrate, Veterans Day is to honor, but Memorial Day is to mourn,” Keller said during the event.

Don Grillo, commander of the Maple Park American Legion, gave a Memorial Day address and read aloud the names of 12 local fallen heroes. That list included three Kaneland High School alumni, who all served in the U.S. Army – Sgt. Robert Domena, a 1990 graduate; specialist Edwin Turk Jr., a 1962 graduate and specialist Richard Wormdahl, a 1963 graduate.

Every veteran at the ceremony was invited to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony for his or her specific branch of the military. About

25 veterans emerged from the crowd to participate, including U.S. Army veteran Hank Grytza of Michigan. Grytza was in town to visit his son Scott’s family in Elburn.

“It was very moving,” Grytza said of the ceremony.

Grytza said it’s important for people to realize that their freedom came from great sacrifices. Another one

of his five sons, Tom, is retired after serving 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, including Operation Desert Storm.

Dennis and Sue Golden of Rochelle also were at the event. Dennis Golden is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Germany during the Vietnam War. Golden sat next to her sister and fellow Rochelle resident Karen Pearson, who brought all her children and grandchildren.

Golden and Pearson said they always have attended area Memorial Day services.

Monday also was a family reunion of sorts – Pearson’s daughter, Mary Kunstman,

and her husband, Bryan, both teach music in the Kaneland School District.

Golden and Pearson’s father, Calvin Strang, was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and the predecessor to the U.S. Air Force. Strang led a small Memorial Day service in Lindenwood for about 50 years, Pearson said.

“He’s just instilled in us that this is important,” Pearson said. “It’s just something that we have to do as a family.”

Elburn Village Board OKs temporary assistant position ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board last week provided a green light for staff to seek a temporary position of parttime office assistant. The person hired will focus on utility billing.

Village Administrator Erin Willrett said the position was necessary because of an employee’s extended absence.

Willrett called it a workers compensation situation. Other staff members have filled in, but she said help was necessary because “we’re missing things, and we’re struggling to keep our heads above water.”

Trustees were supportive of the hire, and the position has been posted at the village’s website. But there was discussion about whether the position would be permanent or temporary. Willrett at first suggested it could be a permanent new position, but some trustees balked at that.

Trustee Jeff Walter asked what the “net new work” would be. Willrett said there was no net new work, but

that nobody was covering the work that needed to be done at this point. Walter said he understood that the new position would be necessary while the existing employee was out.

“But what happens when she comes back? … I don’t know why we need another position. I don’t see the need for it,” Walter said.

Ultimately, it was agreed that the position would be listed as a temporary position. Willrett said it would be less than 1,000 hours a year.

The successful candidate will report to Doug Elder, the village’s finance director.

Willrett said the position is “not just data entry,” and that the village would be “looking

for someone with municipal experience.” She said the position calls for “dealing with not-so-pleasant things,” as well as understanding the village’s software.

According to the job description of the website posting of the position, the office assistant position requires “the ability to work with angry or difficult customers,” as well as the “ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions.”

The job posting calls for applicants to send in resumes no later than June 16. Salary was not discussed at the meeting, and the job posting states that “salary is dependent on qualifications.”

GENEVA – The demo CD submission deadline for Geneva Park District’s Battle of the Bands has been extended to Friday.

Staff will screen demo CDs, and notify chosen bands to play in the June 16 competition.

Battle of the Bands for those ages 12-19 will begin at 4 p.m. at downtown Geneva’s Third Street stage, across the street from the Kane County Courthouse.

Audience admission is free.

ST. CHARLES – Art lovers flocked to downtown St. Charles over the weekend to get their creative fix.

The 16th Annual St. Charles Fine Art Show was host to 108 juried artists with paintings, pottery, glass, bronze and more for sale.

The event also included chats with some of the artists explaining their work and process.

Attendees took in art as well as free live music and trolley rides.

Not only was the weather nice, but people kept saying it was the best show they’ve ever seen, said Sue McDowell, the event’s committee chair.

The Art Show committee works to bring in, not just local families, but art enthusiasts from across the Chicago area.

The main appeal is of course the artwork, and the fact that the event is diverse but not overwhelming, McDowell said.

“I think they like the size of the show – it’s walkable,” she said.

Sharon Perez of St. Charles and her family on Saturday traveled across the entire length of the show with ease.

She and her husband, Jason, were looking for artwork for their living room and also their one-year-old son J.C.’s room.

Two booths that caught Perez’s eye included the nature-themed work of Elgin’s Robert Rydin and the cartoon-esque art of Green Bay’s Melvin McGee. “We love it,” Perez said of the event. “We always go to the art shows in the area.”

Perez said she and her family have attended the St. Charles show for at least the past four years.

Saturday was Lori Wood-

cock’s first time at the show.

She brought her son, Matthew, 15, and daughter, Abigail, 9, to check out the art before dinner.

“I think it’s terrific,” Woodcock said of the show.

“It’s a nice way to come out and enjoy the weather.”

Woodcock is a jewelry maker and will consider applying in the future to exhibit at the show.

Members of another artistic family, the Barbagallos of Rockford, have been part of the show for 15 of its last 16 years.

Shawn Barbagallo, whose father Jim introduced to clay pottery when he was three, said the St. Charles show in general has always been great.

The younger Barbagallo spent part of his Saturday on a pottery wheel in front of a consistent crowd. He even let some children try their hand at the craft.

“If you can instill pottery into children and make them have a love for it, that’s a great thing,” Barbagallo said.

BATAVIA – Sonia E. Mickelsen, 98, of Batavia, formerly of Wheaton and of the Austin neighborhood in Chicago, passed away Friday, May 16, 2014, at Michealsen’s Health Center in Batavia.

She was born July 8, 1915, in Chicago, the daughter of Hjalmar and Elizabeth (Lundell) Hall.

Sonia found great joy in raising her family. She loved quilting with her church group, taking peaceful walks and she was an active member of the T.O.P.S organization.

Sonia was also an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wheaton, regularly attending the Church Circle meetings. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Sonia is survived by her four children Rick (Joni) of Geneva, Barry (Barbara) of Wheaton, Janice (Jim) Beyreis of Prospect Heights and Joyce (Bob) Wannemaker of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Kris Peterson, Kraig (Debbie), Kirk (Amanda), David (Ingrid), and Greg (Lynda) Mickelsen, Wayne (Samantha) Goble, Susie (Brian) Krueger and Karen Wannemaker; and 16 great-grandchildren Lexi and Trevor Peterson, Kayla, Kyle, Konnor, Kollin, Ryan, Katie, Reese, Grange, Mazie and Lyssa Mickelsen, Livvie and Grace Goble, Emerson and

GENEVA – Keith Anderson, 76, of Geneva, formerly of St. Charles, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1938, in Elgin, to Laverne and Gladys Anderson.

Keith was raised in St. Charles and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1956. He was a leader for Boy Scout Troop #53.

Keith was a radio announcer for WGSB in St. Charles. For 20 years, he worked for the City of St. Charles and in his retirement was a crossing guard in St. Charles for 14 years.

Keith is survived by his wife, Mariellen, two sons, Jeff of Sycamore and Scott of Portland, Oregon; a daughter, Sara Anderson of Chicago; stepdaughter, Tara (Colin McCarthy) Moyle of Bloomfield, New Jersey; and several grandnieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Tim; a sister, Jean Hubbard; and two nieces.

JAMES T. WALTON Born: July 13, 1943 Died: May 21, 2014 SUGAR GROVE – James T. Walton, 70, of Sugar Grove, passed away at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He was born July 13, 1943, in Chicago, and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1967 and worked at the Cambridge Electron Accelerator at Harvard University until moving to Illinois to work at Fermilab in 1970 as a physicist until his retirement in 2012 and continued as a guest scientist until his death.

He worked on many notable projects at Fermilab with responsibility for electrostatic Septa, the left bends and vacuum and leak checking. He was a high voltage expert and worked on separators, accelerator research and development, plus many other projects.

He is survived by his daughter,

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Greta Wimberger said she knew she wanted to do her best in Sunday’s Multisport Madness Triathlon Team Triathlon Festival.

“The support from my team and the people who came out to watch kept me going,” said the 8-year-old Sugar Grove resident.

Cadence Fitness and Health Center in Geneva hosted the event, now in its 14th year.

With a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds, Wimberger finished first in her age group in the triathlon’s junior division. As part of the triathlon, Greta competed in a 125-meter swim, a 2-mile bicycle ride and a half-mile run.

She said she enjoyed bicycling the best.

“It wasn’t too hard, and it wasn’t too easy,” Greta said.

“You got to go on a hill rather than being on flat ground.”

Her 6-year-old brother, Peter Wimberger, also participated. He also said he liked

More than 150 kids participated in Sunday’s 14th annual Multisport Madness Triathlon Team Triathlon Festival hosted by Cadence Fitness and Health Center in Geneva. the bicycling portion of the triathlon the best.

“It’s my favorite,” he said.

He was eating a granola bar to get his strength back, saying the event “was tiring.”

Their mother, Teri Wimberger, said she was appreciative of the support that the spectators provided.

“Everybody cheers everybody on,” she said.

Sunny skies provided perfect weather conditions for the race.

“We lucked out,” said race director John Lorenz, who also serves as the team director. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

More than 150 kids participated in this year’s youth triathlon, exposing them to what being a triathlon athlete

is about. Lorenz said that was ideal for organizers.

“For us, it’s about getting kids into the sport,” Lorenz said.

In addition, the USA Triathlon recently selected this year’s event to include a mixed team relay super sprint series race, allowing adults to compete in the race as well.

“Instead of just being kids, you have parents competing with kids,” Lorenz said.

With a time of 30 minutes and 58 seconds, Cooper Langanis, 16, of Cary, took second place in the triathlon’s elite division, which included a 375-meter swim, a 6.2-mile bicycle ride and a 1.55-mile run.

“They’re all hard in different ways,” he said. “The run is the hardest because it’s the last event.”

Marmion to have youth basketball camp AURORA – Marmion Academy, under the direction of head varsity coach Ryan Paradise, will host its annual summer youth basketball camp for players in third through 12th grades.

Camps will be offered the weeks of June 9 to 13 and June 16 to 20.

Players from all schools are welcome.

Rush diagnosis on Veterans Affairs THE WASHINGTON POST The men and women who have served their country in uniform deserve better than delay or denial of the medical care they need and have earned. So it is crucial to get to the bottom of allegations of misconduct at the nation’s veterans hospitals. America’s veterans also deserve not to be treated as so many pawns in election-year gamesmanship – but that sadly is proving to be the case in Congress’ increasingly hyperbolic response.

President Obama made his first public comments last week on the growing controversy surrounding allegations that workers at

hospitals run by the Department of Veterans Affairs manipulated data or created secret waiting lists to hide the delays that veterans faced before they could see a doctor. Most disturbing have been reports of people who died or were harmed while waiting for appointments and of internal memos detailing techniques to cover up problems.

Obama rightly expressed his concern: “I will not stand for it. Not as commander in chief, but also not as an American. None of us should.” He promised that people would be held accountable for any wrongdoing and any deficiencies would be addressed. At the

same time, the president properly cautioned that the facts still have yet to be determined; investigation by the VA into a number of facilities and a broader White House review are underway, with preliminary reports expected next week.

That the extent of wrongdoing is unclear doesn’t seem to matter much to those more interested in scoring political points. How else to explain the knee-jerk calls, mainly

by Republicans in the House and Senate, for the ouster of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki or the ill-advised and punitive legislation aimed at VA workers?

saw him losing part of his foot to a land mine in Vietnam and his success as secretary in reducing veteran homelessness and expanding services. But they apparently aren’t as important as the fact that his understated demeanor was derided by a late-night comedian. It’s beyond us to imagine how denying bonuses to VA employees would aid recruitment of the very professionals who might help reduce the backlogs that cause the delays in getting appointments.

No doubt the VA has its problems. Delayed treatment has been an issue for decades, and the back-to-back wars of Iraq and Afghanistan with their unique set

of injuries have created a further strain. But as was made clear in recent testimony to the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, studies have shown that the VA system, which serves almost 6.5 million veterans annually, as a whole outperforms the rest of the health care system by just about every metric. Surveys also show that veterans give VA hospitals and clinics a higher customer satisfaction than patients give private-sector hospitals.

It’s important that the current problems be addressed.

But they also ought to be kept in context and veterans not made, as the president put it, into “another political football.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By KEVIN DRULEY ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East senior pitchers Mike Boehmer and Adam Eck find that much hasn’t changed since their first encounter in seventh grade travel ball.

“We were complete opposites even then,” Boehmer said. “Normally, it’d either be I’d start and he would finish the game, or he would start and I would finish it.

Because it was just two completely different looks.”

Boehmer, a control-based right-hander who’s a few inches shorter than Eck, a hard-throwing lefty, will take the reins of the Saints’ postseason pitching with his teammate.

But, much like last season, when they largely were understudies on a senior-laden staff, both starters know and trust in the team’s bullpen reinforcements.

East coach Len Asquini figures there’s no reason to disrupt the balance created by two seniors who were reliable innings-eaters and helped the Saints stay in the thick of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division race for much of the season.

The Saints outscored River champion Batavia, 7-5, in

taking two of three games to win a conference series in late April. The staff allowed just 21 runs in the team’s last nine River games, winning eight.

Junior left-hander Austin Regelbrugge, whose velocity is only slightly behind Eck’s mid-80s range, served as the third starter during the regular season. On Saturday, junior Kyle Cook reinforced the Saints’ depth with a no-hitter

at Lake Park to close the regular season.

In the playoffs, Regelbrugge will look to fill in as the first arm out of the bullpen, following the lead of 2013 graduate Troy Dykhuis, who complemented fellow seniors Matt Starai and Nick Huskisson as the Saints finished fourth in class 4A. “That third guy, do we go to him quicker? if we get into a little trouble and we’ve got a little more confidence because that guy’s got a lot of innings, a lot of experience,” Asquini said.

Juniors Jake Milosch and Mick Vyzral also have been effective, with each Vyzral save adding to a single-season school record that stands at eight entering the 4A Hoffman Estates Regional.

Vyzral entered the season as a starting candidate but filled into a role that needed plugging, too.

“We don’t have to go out there and throw every inning,” Boehmer said. “We know if we can get four or five innings in, we know Vyz is going to go out there and get the save.”

East noticed a promising pitching trend developing in 2013, when it advanced to the Phil Lawler Summer Classic state tournament on the heels of the IHSA state run.

“We like that. It helps us when a guy gets in trouble, we go right to another guy we know is going to pound the zone, hit his spots,” Asquini said. “And on top of that, those top three, four guys can be so different in how they deliver and what their stuff is.”

Boehmer and Eck know what that’s about.

Focus remains the top priority

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com The temptation to look forward to a potential blockbuster regional championship game with Burlington Central is powerful for the Kaneland softball team, but the Knights have one major factor that should help them guard against doing so – May 25, 2013.

The Knights were a huge favorite in last year’s regional final against Rosary but absorbed a shocking, 7-6, defeat to the sub-.500 Royals that ended Kaneland’s season with a hollow feeling despite the Knights’ 23-4 final record.

As Kaneland prepares to open postseason play in Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinal against Genoa-Kingston, that jarring loss should serve as a cautionary tale.

“If we didn’t learn from it then, we wouldn’t be very good players or coaches if we didn’t take something out of that loss,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said.

The Knights (19-11) have played their best softball in recent weeks, including a rare threewin day to cap the regular season Saturday as Kaneland swept a doubleheader at Rosary and also beat West Aurora.

Genoa-Kingston is a less familiar opponent for the Knights, but that’s OK by Willis.

“I think I’d rather not know than worry about this or worry about that,” Willis said. “The way we’re playing, I know we’re going to go out and be competitive. It really doesn’t matter who’s across on the other side.”

If top-seeded Burlington Central and second-seeded Kaneland can avert midweek upsets, a regional championship game between the teams Saturday carries an unavoidable storyline.

When the North Stars and Hawks met during the regular season, North held off Bartlett for a tense, 3-2 win that ended with Hawks coach Jim Wolfsmith howling about a disputed call at first base.

Best area bet to win a regional: St. Charles East at

4A St. Charles East Regional.

Third-seeded East likely will face a serious test in a regional final with slugging shortstop Becca Maher and traditional power Elk Grove, the sectional No. 6 seed, waiting in the wings. But the defending Class 4A runners-up have winning postseason experience, a deep lineup and home-field advantage, and the Saints figure to be an extremely tough out.

Potential dark horse: Geneva at 4A Geneva Regional. Despite a 21-win regular season, 11th seeded Geneva is an underdog

out of the gate in Tuesday’s semifinal against No. 5 seed Waubonsie Valley. Geneva figures to see Waubonsie ace Shannon Hohman – a difficult assignment – but the Vikings’ youthful lineup can be explosive, and freshman slugger Annika Radabaugh is on a late-season tear. The Vikings have the ability to change the pace in the circle with hard-throwing Emily Plocinski and finesse pitcher Rachel Fanella.

Entering today’s 11 a.m. series finale against Peoria, the Cougars have played to an average crowd of 4,691 fans over 28 home dates this season, good for second in the 16-team Midwest League.

What’s more, fans are seeing the first-place team in the MWL’s Western Division, one that hasn’t shown any signs of overthinking the first-half stretch run.

“They’re going about their business like they always have and they’re a pretty even-keeled group, so they’re just going to go out and play hard like they’ve been doing all year,” manager Mark Johnson said. “There’s nothing any different.”

The heat is on: First-pitch temperature for the first five games of the Cougars’ current six-game homestand registered at a respective 67, Mark 65, 71, 78 and 81 Johnson degrees.

Morrow’s pitching counterpart in a potential Central matchup is uncertain. Maisto considers Brooke Gaylord and Emily Kisch co-aces.

“They both have pitched well enough to deserve starts [in the postseason], but there’s no rule that says you can’t use both of them in a game, too,” Maisto said. “I certainly don’t have to leave one in if things aren’t going very well, so it gives me some nice options to use. I don’t just have to have one pitcher that, good or bad, I’m going to go with them, and that’s been the case a lot of years.”

By JACOB BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com SCHAUMBURG – The Geneva and St. Charles East boys volleyball teams fought on to live another day as play opened Monday at the IHSA Schaumburg Regional.

In the first regional quarterfinal of the day, Geneva (17-16) came out roaring in the first set, handing opponent Wheaton Academy (17-15) a sound 25-13 defeat.

However, the momentum shifted heavily towards the Warriors in Set 2. Thanks to a consistent attack, Wheaton Academy stormed back in Set 2, defeating Geneva, 25-11.

“We changed up the defense toward the end of [set 1]. [Geneva] was on a roll, and we weren’t playing well. … We moved [the ball] around a little bit, and it really worked in our favor,” Warriors coach D.A. Nichols said.

After a series of timeouts with both teams trading the lead, Set 3 would ultimately fall in Geneva’s favor, with the Vikings prevailing 25-19, and securing a match against Buffalo Grove in a regional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. today.

East will face the host Saxons in a 6:30 p.m. semifinal after sweeping Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival Elgin, 25-15, 25-18 in Monday’s second quarterfinal.

“We’ve played Elgin a lot throughout the season, and I think both teams knew what [they] were getting into when we started,” Saints coach Kate McCullagh said. “Hard work and practice have gotten us where we are.”

Geneva, which shared the UEC River title with East and St. Charles North, can attest.

Nick Buseski (13 kills) and Chris Parrilli (10) paced Geneva’s attack while David Franz led the team with 20 assists.

“We knew this would be a match of momentum, so we made sure we came out [in Set 3] and [gave] everything we had, and did the little things,” Parrilli said.

“I was happy with the way we were willing to compete and battle in the third set, especially when [Wheaton Academy] had so much more confidence.

We stepped up and met that challenge,” Johnsen said.

Even with the defeat, Nichols was proud of his squad and sees a bright future for the team, citing the return of 11 seniors next season.

“This will be a good experience [for us],” Nichols said.

In the next quarterfinal, East (24-12) and Elgin (7-29) squared off in fast-paced match, with the Saints ultimately sweeping the Maroons out of postseason play.

Elgin kept it close early in Set 1, only trailing, 11-7, at the first timeout. However, the Saints would turn up the intensity, and play tough defense to cruise to a 25-15 win.

The Saints had no shortage of help, getting contributions from a variety of players, including senior Joey Leaman, who paced his team with 12 digs.

“We’ve got a very strong front row,” Leaman said. “We worked on getting good passes, so we could feed them and they could score points for us.”

The Saints’ Tom Wolfsmith added 10 kills, while teammate Tom DeBruyne dished out 31 assists.

In Set 2, Elgin fought hard, but ultimately fell short.

Kyle Paquin led the Maroons with seven kills, while teammate Eric Hernandez had 12 assists in the match.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – Responding after a skittish start, the Batavia softball team rallied to defeat Metea Valley, 10-4, on Monday and advanced to face host Benet in a 4A regional semifinal today.

Trailing, 1-0, entering the bottom of the fifth of the regional quarterfinal matinee, Batavia (10-19) scored seven times in the inning. Junior catcher Tara Zufan’s grand slam punctuated the frame.

“We broke out the bats in the fifth,” Bulldogs coach Lupe Castellanos said. “The Metea pitcher mixed up speeds on us, kept us off-balance, but the third time around through the order we made a better adjust-

ment. The girls did a better job of letting the ball get deeper through the zone and really put some solid contact on the ball.”

Batavia finished with 10 hits, with Nicole Peercy (two RBIs) and Christina Karius contributing two apiece.

Rachael Lovestrand was the winner, scattering four runs, five hits, six walks and one strikeout in seven innings.

St. Charles East finished third overall in Class 3A with 38 points, one point behind West Aurora, while Kaneland took 11th overall in Class 2A with 21 points.

But one of the biggest surprises was East’s victory in the 4x800. East had led for much of the race after Anastasia Honea took an early lead of about 27 meters during the second leg.

Torree Scull kept the Saints near the front before passing to Honea, who handed off the lead to Corrin Adams, who battled to remain near the front before Shead took over to bring the team home in 9:08.03.

“I tried to run my first lap conservatively,” Honea said. “I just tried to stick with the person in front of me.”

In the 4x400, Allison Chmelik took the baton for the second lap, padding the lead given by her twin sister, Elizabeth. By the time she handed off to Casey McNichols, East led by about 18 meters. When Shead started her final lap, the Saints trailed by about four meters.

“I knew that I was in second and I had a little work to do, but I knew I could rely on my kick,” Shead said.

The lead runner for the relay, Elizabeth Chmelik, said that watching her teammates was unnerving.

“It was really terrifying to watch, but the girls ran so well,” she said. “It feels so amazing and I am relieved. I’m going to have a lot of motivation for next year.”

East coach Tim Wolf said that putting Shead as the anchor for the 4x800 was a strate-

gic move.

“We turned some heads this morning with the win in the 4x800,” Wolf said. “You could tell people [were] looking at us.

I’m speechless. People stepped up today above and beyond.

We knew what was at stake and that we had to win the 4x400 to solidify a trophy.”

CHARLESTON – Jordan Shead twice found a way to bring the Saints home during the final lap of relays in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state track and field meet.

The senior first helped her St. Charles East teammates win the 4x800-meter when she caught a runner from Loyola Academy on the back stretch of her second lap. She then pulled away and then kicked it in on the final curve to hand the Saints relay team the 4x800 state title.

“I haven’t run that many 800 meters,” Shead said. “I kept thinking that this championship isn’t just for me, it’s for everyone, and I can’t let everyone down.”

She replicated this performance in the 4x400, the final event of the day, when she used her long strides to catch a runner from Lincoln-Way East on the same backstretch before accelerating a few steps ahead on the final straightway to enable East to defend its state title by clocking in at 3 minutes and 49.33 seconds.

Shead was among several local state champions in Saturday’s meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz set a state record in winning the 800 in Class 2A, sprinting the final 150 yards to a time of 2:10.73. Liz extended her lead on the final lap’s backstretch, creating a 10-yard lead.

“Everyone started out really fast,” Liz said. “I wanted to lead from the beginning, but I didn’t want to cut my energy.”

Liz, undefeated in the 800 this season, wanted to break 2:10 but she said she hit a mark that was good enough for her.

“When I turned around and looked at my time, I was so excited I started jumping around – as much as I could jump,” Liz said. “It’s a good feeling because I’ve wanted to win state since I was in eighth grade.”

Aurora Christian captured the Class 1A team title with 49 points behind first-place finishes from Natasha Brown, who ran 25.37 in the 200, and second-places finishes from

56.53, as did Scull in the 1,600 in 5:01.6, while Allison Chmelik took fifth in the triple jump in 36 feet, 9.5 inches.

The 4x100 team of Kim Abels, McNichols, Keely Flanigan and Elizabeth Chmelik took ninth in 49.83 seconds.

Kaneland’s Nicole Sreenan took third in the Class 2A 400 by finishing strong to clock 56.34 seconds, and she took eighth in the 100 in 12.5 seconds. Teammates Olivia Galor, Sreenan, Sydney Strang and Allie Heinzer placed seventh in the 4x400 with 4:01.60, while the 4x200 relay of Galor, Becca Richtman, Heinzer and Carly Elliott finished eighth in 1:45.25.

Elliott, Heinzer, Sreenan and Lauren Zick placed sixth in the 4x100 in 49.03 seconds.

Among other local athletes, Rosary’s Sarah Nyaeme went 36 feet in the triple jump for fifth in Class 2A, and the 4x400 relay of Emily Bakala, Molly Stefanski, Shea Vero and Abby Hammer took seventh in 4:01.80.

Geneva’s Foster Ignoffo placed sixth in the 400 in Class 3A with a time of 57.41.

Royals upset Knights in shootout to win regional

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The grass on Rosary’s soccer field already was long when Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A girls soccer regional championship match between the host Royals and Kaneland began.

By the time the marathon match was settled – including two overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout – the field was even more ripe for a trimming.

Overgrown grass or not, the Royals loved their homefield advantage after winning the penalty kick shootout, 3-1, following scoreless regulation and overtime sessions. Rosary ousted Kaneland in a regional final for the fourth time in five years.

Last year’s meeting – which required a tying goal from Rosary with 1:20 to go in regulation en route to a double-overtime Royals triumph – took place in Rochelle. Saturday’s result might have been even more painful for Kaneland, which was the regional’s top seed and defeated Rosary in both regular season meetings, 2-0 and 3-0. The Knights were denied what would have been their first regional title in program history.

“I don’t know how it happens, but it did happen,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “But you know what, the girls, they played tough, they

Until Saturday, the Royals (10-11-1) had dealt with a frustrating spring as various injuries have prevented the Royals from fielding the lineup first-year head coach Brian Frank envisioned. One of those injured cogs, junior Maria Witte, missed most of the season with separate injuries, and only returned this week for regionals.

Witte, a St. Cloud State (Minnesota) recruit from Batavia, scored the match-clinching penalty kick to give Rosary the 3-1 edge in the shootout.

The Royals, with DePaul-bound senior goalkeeper Lauren Frasca, are well-suited

for a shootout. Frasca’s reputation – and a dash of gamesmanship – might have contributed to Kaneland’s shootout woes. Only Kaneland’s second shooter, Madi Jurcenko, converted, while two other shots hit the post and Frasca stopped another, diving to her right to deny Nicole Koczka.

“I like to wait until they’re set up so I can have time to set up myself,” Frasca said.

“That’s my approach. I got in there and really felt comfortable. I knew [Koczka] was a right-footed shooter and I saw her back up, saw her line up … just to get that touch on it was unreal.”

Frasca also took a PK in the shootout but sailed her shot high. Lizzie Kelley and Katherine Thielen made their PKs for the Royals before Kaneland goalkeeper Emily Chapman stopped Rosary’s fourth attempt, momentarily keeping the Knights (14-4-2) afloat.

Kaneland maintained much of the possession in the first half but both teams managed periods of pressure as the match unfolded. Kaneland senior defender Delaney Stryczek’s header was inches high from giving the Knights a first-half lead.

Rosary junior Quincy Kellett had the Royals’ best scoring chance of regulation with about 26:30 to play in the second half but her attempt appeared to be tipped off the crossbar by Chapman.

Geneva girls soccer takes home regional

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – No one on the Geneva girls soccer team knew that going into Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A regional championship match, the Vikings’ opponent, Glenbard North, had given up only 15 goals this season.

The Vikings were surprised to hear that fact after the match as they put the ball into the net four times en route to a 4-2 win and their third regional title in a row.

Geneva advances to the Conant Sectional semifinal and will play Conant on Tuesday night after St. Charles East and St. Charles North square off in the first semifinal.

“No, I didn’t know that.

You know it’s hard in Chicagoland soccer to keep tabs on teams that aren’t covered by the local newspapers,” responded Geneva coach Megan Owens when told about the Panthers’ total goals allowed. “They played a great game. They fought hard the whole game but my kids rose to the challenge.”

Also unaware was Geneva’s Megan Fitz, who scored Geneva’s fourth goal midway through the second half.

“Oh no, actually I didn’t.

We knew they were a good team and it would be a hard game so we just came in and played our best,” said the junior.

“Yeah. that’s the most goals we’ve given up all season,” said David Stanfield, Glenbard North’s coach.

“We made some basic mistakes early on today that really cost us.”

Courtney Lardas started the scoring for the Vikings, knocking the ball in from in front of the goal on a pass from Michaela Loebel six minutes in.

Mary Landry had back-toback strikes for Geneva (155-2) to improve its lead to 3-0 in the first half. She kicked in her first score with an as-

sist by Hope Goodman with 17 minutes to play. Landry scored her second goal at the 11:26 mark. Panther goalkeeper Ariana DePinto blocked a shot that bounced back to Landry, who returned to the ball back to the net, and this time it got past DePinto.

“We created problems for ourselves but I felt when you are two down it’s not such a hill to climb,” Stanfield said.

“But three down is tough.”

Glenbard North (14-7) cut the margin to 3-1 with nine minutes left before halftime.

A throw-in by Glenbard North’s Ashley Pogue went over Geneva goalkeeper Sam Hauser’s outstretched arms. The ball, which grazed Hauser’s fingers, landed behind her and gave Panther Amanda Biondo a shot at the unguarded goal.

In the first half, most of the action took place on the Panthers’ side of the field.

In the second half, play was balanced between the two teams.

“We started the second half well,” Stanfield said.

“We were in a good spot and then we gave up the fourth goal and it was really hard after that.”

Fitz’s goal with 20:13 to play started with a free kick

“Taylor Williams flipped the ball back over to me and I lined up my feet,” Fitz said.

“I just turned and shot it.”

Owens attributed Glenbard North’s step up in play to the weather and frequent substituting.

But 30 years ago, a worn Pendleton blanket had a lower value, so it was cut up and turned into a toy. The result was a plush toucan bird that looks like the Toucan Sam logo for Froot Loops cereal. The finished bird measures 16 by 11 inches.

Allard Auctions of St. Ignatius, Mont., sold it for $115 at a March 2014 auction held in Mesa, Ariz. There were 11 bids. *** Q: I have a glass quart jar that’s embossed “1776” above the Liberty Bell and “1976” below it. The other side of the jar is embossed “Mason’s.” Is it worth anything?

The jars often are found today and sell for $5 to $10. *** Q: My husband was a cartoonist and sometimes corresponded with Charles Schulz, famous for his “Peanuts” comic strip. When my husband had heart surgery, Schulz sent him two of his original Peanuts strips. Each one is about 30 inches long and 6 inches high and is signed “Schulz.” My husband has since died and the strips now belong to me and our children. One strip features Charlie Brown and Snoopy, and the other Lucy and Schroeder. Please tell me what the strips are worth.

A: If the strips are indeed original works by Charles Schulz, they’re valuable.

Some have sold at auction for $15,000.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you are storing them safely by using archival papers and boxes. Keep them away from direct light. Insure them. If the strips are not marked with a date, try to find out when they first ran. If you want to sell, contact a reputable auction house that deals in comic art. *** Q: I am thinking about selling a set of Sascha Brastoff dishes. The dishes are pink and gold and include service for eight. I think the dishes date from 1949.

What is the set worth?

A: Sascha Brastoff (1918-1993), born Samuel Brostofsky, was raised in Cleveland but moved to New York City when he was 17. After serving in the armed forces during World War II, he settled in Los Angeles and worked as a costume designer for 20th Century Fox before starting his own small ceramic business in 1947. His company, Sascha Brastoff Products, opened in 1952.

Brastoff’s earliest china and earthenware dinner services date from 1954, so your set is not as old as you think. His bestknown pink-and-gold pattern is “Surf Ballet.” Check the mark on the bottom of your dishes; it can help determine when they were made. Brastoff’s earliest mark was his first name, hand-painted. When a new Brastoff factory opened in 1953, a stamped mark was used that includes a rooster and Brastoff’s full name. After

by Gorham. The sides of the bowl are engraved with three initials and the years 1854 and 1904. We’re thinking of selling it or recycling it for scrap value. Can you tell us what it’s worth?

A: The dates and monogrammed initials on your bowl indicate it probably was made to mark some event, perhaps a 50th anniversary. Silver is always worth at least its meltdown value. If a piece of silver also has sentimental value, families often keep it regardless of the meltdown value. Take the bowl to a jeweler or dealer in gold and silver to find out its minimum value. The price of silver fluctuates, and the value will depend upon the current price of silver, the weight of the bowl, and whether it’s solid silver or silver plate. You should get at least meltdown price from an antiques dealer or auction.

A: Your bells were part of the fad of limited edition plates, figurines and bells so popular in the 1970s. Each bell sold back then for $75, and 5,000 sets were made. Today you would be lucky to get $200 for the set. ***

‘Walking the Camino’: A long, strained trip

By STEPHANIE MERRY Special To The Washington Post Depending on how you look at it, a movie about El Camino de Santiago could be brilliant or brutally boring.

On one hand, the pilgrimage, which started as a religious processional to the shrine of St. James in Galicia, Spain, more than 1,000 years ago, is an awe-inspiring feat of human stamina; on the other, it’s a 500-mile walk.

The good-natured documentary “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” tends toward the positive end of the spectrum.

Director Lydia Smith opts to show a wealth of experiences along the Camino, although focusing deeply on a couple of travelers might have made more of an impact.

Smith follows six groups of hikers departing from Southern France, each on the trek for their own reasons.

For one man, it was either the Camino or learning to kite-surf, while a British-Brazilian woman sees the journey as the next logical, radical step to rejiggering her life, since she’s

already chopped off and bleached her hair. Others travel alone, looking for solitude, although one French woman brings along her 3-year-old son, which is either adventurous or insane.

The experience of walking varies wildly from person to person. A couple of middle-age men from Canada wander day after day, weathering the rain and sunburns without complaint, while an American woman cries nearly every time she’s interviewed. Her debilitating tendinitis threatens her prospects of making it to Galicia.

One of the most important parts of making a documentary like “Walking the Camino” is selecting subjects.

A filmmaker tends to start the process following a bunch of people and then whittles it down to the most worthwhile characters. In the case of this movie, there’s a sense that the roster could have been better honed.

Few of the hikers turn out to be particularly memorable. Seeing what it takes to travel with a 3-year-old on the Camino is more interesting than watching a woman suffer with sore knees. And following along on the

fledgling relationship of a man and a woman who met on the Camino turns out to be more rewarding than the more run-of-the-mill tale of a woman seeking reinvention. It’s possible that all the subjects would have made more of an impression had the film stayed with them for longer periods instead of jumping constantly from group to group.

That being said, the movie’s other subject – the Camino itself – is more than ably captured. The scenery is so spectacular, rain or shine, that even close-ups of grotesque blisters and pilgrims weeping from pain can’t deter a viewer from wanting to see the path for herself.

“Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” may not be entirely brilliant, but it’s at the very least inspiring.

• “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains nothing objectionable. It is in English and Spanish with subtitles and runs 84 minutes.

My colleague – who is unaware of my status – recently introduced me to a relative of hers who is also lonely and looking for someone to settle down with. We “clicked” and seem to complement each other in every way, although we haven’t had any sexual encounter.

My fear is, how do I disclose my status without being rejected?

He seems to have big plans for us, which include settling down and having kids in the future. I am also worried that he might be angry with my colleague and not believe that she is unaware of my status. Medications and other medical interventions can help keep the virus from being transmitted to your children, and condoms can protect your partner.

Poor sleep is one consequence of restless leg syndrome Dear Doctor K: My doctor says I have restless leg syndrome. What is it, and how is it treated?

Dear Reader: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a brain and nervous system disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs. The discomfort is usually accompanied by an overwhelming urge to move the legs.

Doing so can temporarily relieve the discomfort.

The odd sensations are usually worst below the knees and usually felt in both legs. In people with more severe symptoms, similar sensations can affect the arms.

The uncomfortable sensations caused by RLS are worse during periods of rest, especially just before sleeping or during sleep.

My patients with this condition have used different words to describe the sensations that they feel in their legs. Sometimes they simply describe “pains” in their legs. Often they use more colorful words: “tingling,” “prickly,” “like something’s crawling on me,” “like little worms are wriggling underneath my skin,” “like something is pulling at my skin.”

Because RLS symptoms are worse at night – or, in many cases, occur only at night – sleep deprivation can be a major problem for people with RLS. Symptoms may make it difficult to fall asleep, or they may compel a person to get in and out of bed

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff many times. Even asleep, patients typically shift position every 15 to 30 minutes.

During the day, symptoms are worse when sitting still. The condition can make it difficult to take car or plane trips, enjoy a movie or even hold a desk job.

RLS is present more often in people with certain conditions. At the top of the list is iron deficiency. Kidney disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, varicose veins in the legs and Parkinson’s disease are also on the list.

Alcohol, nicotine and caffeine can aggravate the condition. So can several medications; the SSRI anti-depressants, amitriptyline and anti-psychotic medicines may be the most common culprits.

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms. For mild symptoms, exercising, stretching, doing knee bends or massaging your legs can help.

Some people get temporary relief by taking a hot bath or applying cold or warm compresses to the legs.

Lifestyle changes also may help. Try to eat a balanced diet.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and cigarette smoking. Iron supplements

may also help, even if you don’t have an iron deficiency.

Many experts also recommend mentally challenging activities, such as crossword puzzles or video games, to reduce symptoms (perhaps by distraction).

A number of medications, taken individually or in combination, can help relieve symptoms: • Dopaminergic agents. These drugs relieve discomfort and improve sleep quality.

• Benzodiazepines. These sedatives improve sleep quality.

• Anti-convulsants. These medicines are especially useful in patients who experience pain.

• Opioids. These narcotic drugs are used to relieve pain and suppress RLS in people with severe, unrelenting symptoms that do not respond to other treatments. They can be habit-forming.

You may not have heard about RLS until you were diagnosed with it. Lots of my patients haven’t. However, surveys find that it may affect 5 to 10 percent of the adult population. Often it has not been diagnosed: Either people don’t tell their doctor about it, or the doctor doesn’t make the diagnosis.

Teen’s former teacher is ‘a super human being’ Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old sophomore in high school and I’d like to comment on the advice you gave a girl who, after graduating, wanted to ask a former teacher for a date. You advised her not to. I was shocked at your response.

Ever since I was in seventh grade I’ve had a crush on a certain teacher. My mother told me that I would forget all about him when I got into high school and started dating.

Well, I’m in high school now and I’ve dated guys my own age, but my crush on this teacher has grown into a full-fledged love. I still see him often and we discuss many things.

When I graduate from high school I plan to have a relationship with this former teacher.

I’m also aware that some students mistakenly take a teacher’s concern for them as a signal that romance is forthcoming. That could very well be the case with your former teacher.

We are looking at situations in which third hand should or should not follow the “third-hand high” mantra. Which is right here? South is in four hearts.

West leads a fourth-highest diamond two. After dummy plays low, should East put in his nine or rise with the king?

North knew that his hand was a tad strong for a four-heart “weak freak” raise, but he knew that it was unlikely his side had a slam, and he was worried that the opponents might be able to do well in spades.

East should work out who has what in diamonds. He knows that South has the ace, because West would not have led a diamond away from the ace. And South presumably has three diamonds.

West probably has the queen, and might have the 10 as well.

(If West had started with 10-high diamonds, he likely would have led from a stronger suit.)

However, the key point is that if East plays his king, declarer must get two diamond tricks: his ace and, later, dummy’s jack. But if East puts in his nine, perhaps he can hold South to one diamond winner.

Yes, West will be momentarily misled about the diamond position, but East will clarify when in with his heart king, cashing the diamond king and playing another round of the suit.

You can see that in this layout, playing the diamond nine is critical. It allows the defenders to take one heart, two diamonds and one club.

The usual rule is: When dummy has one honor, third hand holds a higher honor, and dummy plays low, third hand saves his honor when he can insert a nine or higher.
