Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race ST. CHARLES – The Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race will take place at 11 a.m. June 28 at Swanson Pool, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, and at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Otter Cove Aquatic Park, 3615 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

Participants will design, build and navigate a boat made of corrugated cardboard and duct tape across the swimming pool.

Fun Horse Show event at HorsePower MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding will be hosting a Fun Horse Show event on Memorial Day, Monday.

Twenty-seven riders of all ages with special needs will be demonstrating their skills and enthusiasm. The show is at Fox Chase Farm, 46W276 Route 38, Maple Park. A casual schooling show is planned, and riders are preparing to compete in classes such as costume, egg and spoon, obstacle course and dressage.

The public is welcome to attend, and show hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parking is very limited, so attendees are urged to carpool and bring their own lawn chairs. The admission fee is a $5 donation. Those 10 and younger are free. Lunch will be provided for a donation. There will be a bucket raffle.

Residents enjoy paintings, ceramics and more at St. Charles Fine Art Show

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Art lovers flocked to downtown St. Charles over the weekend to get their creative fix.

The 16th Annual St. Charles Fine Art Show was host to 108 juried artists with paintings, pottery, glass, bronze and more for sale. The event also included chats with some of the artists explaining their work and process.

Attendees took in art as well as free live music and trolley rides. Not only was the weather nice, but people kept saying it was the best show they’ve ever seen, said Sue McDowell, the event’s committee chair.

The Art Show committee works to bring in not just local families but art enthusiasts from across the Chicago area.

The main appeal is, of course, the artwork, and the fact that the event is diverse but not overwhelming, McDowell said.

“I think they like the size of the show – it’s walkable,” she said.

Sharon Perez of St. Charles and her family on Saturday traveled across the entire length of the show with ease. She and her husband Jason were looking for artwork for their living room and also their one-year-old son J.C.’s room.

Two booths that caught Perez’s eye included the nature-themed work of Elgin’s Robert Rydin and the cartoon-esque art of Green Bay’s Melvin McGee.

“We love it,” Perez said of the event. “We always go to the art shows in the area.”

Perez said she and her family have attended the St. Charles show for at least the past four years.

Saturday was Lori Woodcock’s first time at the show.

She brought her son Matthew, 15, and daughter Abigail, 9, to check out the art before dinner.

“I think it’s terrific,” Woodcock said of the show. “It’s a nice way to come out and enjoy the

weather.”

Woodcock is a jewelry maker and will consider applying in the future to exhibit at the show.

Members of another artistic family, the Barbagallos of Rockford, have been part of the show for 15 of its last 16 years.

Shawn Barbagallo, whose father Jim introduced to clay pottery when he was three, said the St. Charles show in general has always been great.

The younger Barbagallo spent part of his Saturday on a pottery wheel in front of a consistent crowd. He even let some children try their hand at the craft.

“If you can instill pottery into children and make them have a love for it, that’s a great thing,” Barbagallo said.

GENEVA – Greta Wimberger knew she wanted to do her best in Sunday’s Multisport Madness Triathlon Team Triathlon Festival.

“The support from my team and the people who came out to watch kept me going,” said the 8-year-old Sugar Grove resident.

Cadence Fitness and Health Center in Geneva hosted the event, now in its 14th year.

With a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds, Wimberger finished first in her age group in the triathlon’s junior division. As part of the triathlon, Greta competed in a 125 meter swim, two mile bicycle ride and half-mile run.

She enjoyed bicycling the best.

“It wasn’t too hard and it wasn’t too easy,” Greta said.

“You got to go on a hill rather than being on flat ground.”

Her 6-year-old brother, Peter Wimberger, also participated in the triathlon. He also liked the bicycling portion of the triathlon the best.

“It’s my favorite,” he said.

He was eating a granola bar to get his strength back.

“It was tiring,” Peter said.

Their mother, Teri Wimberger, was appreciative of

the support that the spectators provided.

“Everybody cheers everybody on,” she said.

Sunny skies provided perfect weather conditions for the race.

“We lucked out,” said race director John Lorenz, who also serves as the team director. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

More than 150 kids participated in this year’s youth triathlon, exposing them to what being a triathlon athlete is about.

“For us, it’s about getting kids into the sport,” Lorenz said.

In addition, the USA Triathlon recently selected this year’s event to include a mixed team relay super sprint series race, allowing adults to compete in the race as well.

“Instead of just being kids, you have parents competing with kids,” Lorenz said.

With a time of 30 minutes and 58 seconds, Cooper Langanis, 16, of Cary, took second place in the triathlon’s elite division, which included a 375 meter swim, a 6.2 mile bicycle ride and a 1.55 mile run.

“They’re all hard in different ways,” he said. “The run is the hardest because it’s the last event.”

By KRISTEN GISONDI editorial@kcchronicle.com CHARLESTON – Jordan Shead twice found a way to bring the Saints home during the final lap of relays in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state track and field meet.

The senior first helped her St. Charles East teammates win the 4x800-meter when she caught a runner from Loyola Academy on the back stretch of her second lap. She then pulled away and then kicked it in on the final curve to hand the Saints relay team the 4x800 state title.

“I haven’t run that many 800 meters,” Shead said. “I kept thinking that this championship isn’t just for me, it’s for everyone, and I can’t let everyone down.”

She replicated this performance in the 4x400, the final event of the day, when she used her long strides to catch a runner from Lincoln-Way East on the same backstretch before accelerating a few steps ahead on the final straightway to enable East to defend its state title by clocking in at 3 minutes and 49.33 seconds.

Shead was among several local state champions in Saturday’s meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz set a state record in winning the 800 in Class 2A, sprinting the final 150 yards to a time of 2:10.73. Liz extended her lead on the final lap’s backstretch, creating a 10-yard lead.

“Everyone started out really fast,” Liz said. “I wanted to lead from the beginning, but I didn’t want to cut my energy.”

Liz, undefeated in the 800 this season, wanted to break 2:10 but she said she hit a mark that was good enough for her.

“When I turned around and looked at my time, I was so excited I started jumping around – as much as I could jump,” Liz said. “It’s a good feeling because I’ve wanted to win state since I was in eighth grade.”

St. Charles East finished third overall in Class 3A with 38 points, one point behind West Aurora, while Kaneland took 11th overall in Class 2A with 21 points.

But one of the biggest surprises was East’s victory in the 4x800. East had led for much of the race after Anastasia Honea took an early lead of about 27 meters during the second leg.

before Shead took over to bring the team home in 9:08.03.

“I tried to run my first lap conservatively,” Honea said. “I just tried to stick with the person in front of me.”

In the 4x400, Allison Chmelik took the baton for the second lap, padding the lead given by her twin sister, Elizabeth. By the time she handed off to Casey McNichols, East led by about 18 meters. When Shead started her final lap, the Saints trailed by about four meters.

“I knew that I was in second and I had a little work to do, but I knew I could rely on my kick,” Shead said.

The lead runner for the relay, Elizabeth Chmelik, said that watching her teammates was unnerving.

“It was really terrifying to watch, but the girls ran so well,” she said. “It feels so

amazing and I am relieved. I’m going to have a lot of motivation for next year.”

East coach Tim Wolf said that putting Shead as the anchor for the 4x800 was a strategic move.

“We turned some heads this morning with the win in the 4x800,” Wolf said. “You could tell people looking at us. I’m speechless. People stepped up today above and beyond. We knew what was at stake and that we had to win the 4x400 to solidify a trophy.”

Several other East athletes placed in the top six. Shead placed fourth in the 400 in 56.53, as did Scull in the 1,600 in 5:01.6, while Allison Chmelik took fifth in the triple jump in 36 feet, 9.5 inches.

The 4x100 team of Kim Abels, McNichols, Keely Flanigan and Elizabeth Chmelik took ninth in 49.83 seconds.

Kaneland’s Nicole Sreenan took third in the Class 2A 400 by finishing strong to clock 56.34 seconds, and she took eighth in the 100 in 12.5 seconds. Teammates Olivia Galor, Sreenan, Sydney Strang and Allie Heinzer placed seventh in the 4x400 with 4:01.60, while the 4x200 relay of Galor, Becca Richtman, Heinzer and Carly Elliott finished eighth in 1:45.25.

Elliott, Heinzer, Sreenan and Lauren Zick placed sixth in the 4x100 in 49.03 seconds.

Among other local athletes, Rosary’s Sarah Nyaeme went 36 feet in the triple jump for fifth in Class 2A, and the 4x400 relay of Emily Bakala, Molly Stefanski, Shea Vero and Abby Hammer took seventh in 4:01.80.

Geneva’s Foster Ignoffo placed sixth in the 400 in Class 3A with a time of 57.41.

Witte, a St. Cloud State (Minnesota) recruit from Batavia, notched the match-clinching penalty kick to give Rosary the 3-1 edge in the shootout.

“It’s been crazy,” Witte said of Rosary’s season. “Just to get everyone back on the field and finally get everyone playing together and meshing, obviously it turned out well.”

The Royals, with DePaul-bound senior goalkeeper Lauren Frasca, are well-suited for a shootout. Frasca’s reputation – and a dash of gamesmanship – might have contributed to Kaneland’s shootout woes. Only Kaneland’s second shooter, Madi Jurcenko, converted, while two other shots hit the post and Frasca stopped another, diving to her right to deny Nicole Koczka.

“I like to wait until they’re set up so I can have time to set up myself,” Frasca said.

“That’s my approach. I got in there and really felt comfortable. I knew [Koczka] was a right-footed shooter and I saw her back up, saw her line up … just to get that touch on it was unreal.”

Frasca also took a PK in the shootout but sailed her shot high. Lizzie Kelley and Katherine Thielen made their PKs for the Royals before Kaneland goalkeeper Emily Chapman stopped Rosary’s

fourth attempt, momentarily keeping the Knights (14-4-2) afloat.

Witte said her match-clinching PK was an impromptu strike.

“It depends on where the keeper’s going,” Witte said. “I just saw her go a little left and I hit it right.”

Kaneland maintained much of the possession in the first half but both teams managed periods of pressure as the match unfolded. Kaneland senior defender Delaney Stryczek’s header was inches high from giving the Knights a first-half lead.

“We may have had one mistake on someone not marking or covering to give that up but never again in the game did they have that close of a shot that we weren’t ready to cover, that we weren’t there, so I think we recovered from our mistakes and definitely came out on top,” Frasca said. “And it feels unreal.”

Rosary junior Quincy Kellett had the Royals’ best scoring chance of regulation with about 26:30 to play in the second half but her attempt appeared to be tipped off the crossbar by Chapman.

The match’s pace was slowed somewhat by the thick grass. Frank said there were no shenanigans involved.

“They were supposed to come out and mow it [Friday],” Frank said. “I don’t know why they didn’t. They were scheduled to come out and mow it. It wasn’t anything we did on purpose. It just happened to be that way.

“Did it give us an advantage? I don’t know. When we’re trying to do fast breaks, no, obviously it did not. It’s the same grass they played on. If it was slow for them for possession, it was slow for us for in transition.”

The Royals are no stranger to postseason success, but this season is a different animal as they’re headed to sectionals still a match shy of .500.

“We’re working on it,” Frank said.

The Chronicle previews the baseball and softball postseason, which gets rolling this week with regionals play for teams in classes 3A and 4A. Softball regional semifinals are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday while baseball regional semifinals are Wednesday and Thursday. All regional championship games are Saturday.

AURORA – The grass on Rosary’s soccer field already was long when Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A girls soccer regional championship match between the host Royals and Kaneland began.

By the time the marathon match was settled – including two overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout – the field was even more ripe for a trimming.

Overgrown grass or not, the Royals loved their homefield advantage after winning the penalty kick shootout, 3-1, following scoreless regulation and overtime sessions.

Rosary ousted Kaneland in a regional final for the fourth time in five years.

Last year’s meeting – which required a tying goal from Rosary with 1:20 to go in regulation en route to a double-overtime Royals triumph – took place in Rochelle. Saturday’s result might have been even more painful for Kaneland, which was the regional’s top seed and defeated Rosary in both regular season meetings, 2-0 and 3-0. The Knights were denied what would have been their first regional title in program history.

“I don’t know how it happens, but it did happen,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “But you know what, the girls, they played tough, they gave it all they had, and sometimes your best just isn’t good enough. It’s just getting pretty tiresome that it happens to not be good enough when we’re here and playing Rosary.”

A defensive finesse that is often right

It is surprising that so many of the adages of bridge are wrong more often than they are right.

This week we will look at: Do not finesse against your partner.

What is a finesse against partner? It occurs when a defender leads a low card in a suit, promising at least one honor in it, dummy plays low, and third hand does not play his highest card.

In this deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest spade. How should East plan the defense?

When you open one or two no-trump, do not worry about unstopped suits. There are not enough words in bridge bidding to permit hands to be described down to the last atom.

South will need to drive out the club ace to establish sufficient tricks for his contract. If he also loses at least four spade tricks, he will go down. However, an East who was born and raised on third hand high will put up his spade king at trick one and the contract will cruise home.

East needs to realize that if he does play the spade king, South will get two spade tricks. Also, if Westâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth-highest lead promises an honor in the suit, he must have the queen. So East can play his 10, finessing against partner, and take the trick. Then he can continue with his spade king and his third spade. West will win the next trick with his club ace and cash two spade tricks to defeat the contract.

What if South has the spade queen? It will lose only a tempo for East to withhold his king.

Here, finessing against partner is clearly correct.
