St. Charles Police Department warn of utility scam KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is warning businesses of a utility scam that has targeted at least two establishments in recent weeks, police said in a news release this week.

Someone purporting to be with the city’s electric utility reportedly tried to bilk a newly opened business out of $800 by telling the owner his bill was overdue, according to the release. The owner told police the caller, who went by “Nathan,” asked for a credit card payment over the phone and provided a reference number to try to legitimize the scam.

He did not fall for the ploy, police said, noting a Rich-

mond, Va., area code on the caller ID was “a big red flag.”

Police said a similar incident was reported within the last week by another business.

“The city began to see this scam last year, and municipalities across the state and the country have been target-

ed,” the release states. “Different variations of this scam have threatened electric shutoff and demands for payment via Green Dot Money Paks and PayPal.” If the city were to contact a customer, police said, it would be from a 630 area code.

Also, the city’s electric utility

does not contact customers by phone to make payments and does not use credit card billing by phone.

Questions about the status of an account should be directed to St. Charles’ Utility Billing Department. Call 630-3774426 during normal business hours.

Enrollment for St. Peter School slowly growing

Library board selects new library director

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Peter School leaders Thursday told parents that enrollment continues to increase for the next school year, but more students are needed to create more than one classroom section at each grade level.

The private school, located at 1881 Kaneville Road in Geneva, currently has 284 students registered for the 2014-15 school year, said Larry Johnson, the school’s acting principal. Enrollment was at 200 students before Rev. Martins Emeh of St. Peter Catholic Church earlier this month wrote to parents about the decline in student numbers.

After Emeh’s letter, more

families began to enroll.

More than 200 parents from those families attended a parent meeting Thursday at the school gym to receive an update from St. Peter administration.

The growing enrollment resulted in a second section, or additional classroom being added at first and eighth grades, as well as the addition of a half-day kindergarten program, Emeh said.

Classes that are at or nearing an enrollment of 32 students will receive assistance from a full-time co-teacher. The teacher will move around to different classes and grade levels wherever he or she is needed, Johnson said.

Johnson and Emeh also took questions from parents, some of which shared

their frustrations and concerns. Amanda Colgan of Geneva said Emeh’s letter was a total surprise earlier this month. She wanted to know if communication between the school and parents will improve.

“Will that kind of surprise ever happen in the future?” Johnson asked, referring to the letter. “No – that’s not how I operate.”

Several parents also shared how their children have benefited from a St. Peter education.

Peggy Franz of Geneva said the academics at the school are incredible and the students really learn how to write well and construct paragraphs at an early age.

“This school is fabulous,” Franz said. “Don’t give up on this school.”

Following a closed session, board members unanimously voted to offer a contract to Christine Lazaris at a salary of $91,000 a year. She has accepted the position.

“I think Christine will do a great job here,” Library President Esther Steel said.

“I am very excited about the future.”

Lazaris was among three candidates board members interviewed for the job. The library serves about 30,500 residents of Geneva and the surrounding area.

Lazaris currently serves as manager of access services at Skokie Public Library. She previously served as head li-

brarian at the Illinois Institute of Art in Schaumburg.

It is not known when she will start.

The Geneva Library Board in April accepted the resignation of Assistant Library Director Matt Teske. Teske was library director for six years, but resigned in January. At the same meeting where the board accepted his resignation, the board majority immediately rehired him as an assistant director.

Teske had taken time off in November and December and had said at the time of his resignation he had been dealing with depression and anxiety. In his resignation letter, Teske said serving as library director was not a good fit, but he would do better as an assistant director.

Teske also had served as assistant director before becoming director in 2008.

Road closures planned for art show, Memorial Day parade KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Motorists and pedestrians should take note of downtown road closures and parking restrictions this Memorial Day weekend.

Road closures begin at 5 a.m. today to accommodate the 2014 St. Charles Fine Art Show scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, according to a St. Charles police news release.

Riverside Avenue will be

closed between East Main Street (Route 64) and Illinois Avenue. Walnut Avenue will be closed between Riverside Avenue and South 2nd Avenue.

The St. Charles Municipal Parking Lot located in the 100 block of Walnut Avenue also will be closed, according to the release. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes of travel during the Fine Art Show.

The streets and parking lot are scheduled to reopen at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Different street closings will be in effect Monday for the 2014 Memorial Day Parade, according to another St. Charles police news release.

Main Street (Route 64) will be closed from 9:45 a.m. until about 11 a.m. from 7th Street on the west side of the Fox River to 5th Avenue (Route 25) east of the river.

Several streets will be closed starting at 8 a.m. Monday to allow for the staging of parade units.

Those streets are Walnut Street from South Fourth

Street to South Seventh Street, and South Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets from Main Street to Illinois Street, Parking will be prohibited on the Main Street Bridge from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., according to the release.

Motorists traveling across the Fox River are encouraged to use either the Illinois Street Bridge or the Red Gate Bridge.

Police and emergency management personnel will provide traffic assistance along the parade route.

Lunchbox connects N.Y. woman, son to ex-resident

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It took a moment for St. Charles resident Mary Fisher to register what she read in Thursday’s Kane County Chronicle.

The story on Page 4 – titled “Message in a lunchbox prompts search” – was about a New York woman and her son trying to locate the owner of a Huckleberry Hound/ Quick Draw McGraw lunchbox. A label indicated it once belonged to David Fisher of 431 Elm Ave. in Geneva.

Mary Fisher has a son named David and said she was surprised to read there was another David Fisher from Geneva. But then realization sunk in.

“Wait – 431 Elm, that’s us!” Mary Fisher said, recalling her reaction. “I about died when I saw [the story].”

She even remembers the lunchbox.

“I wrote the name in there,” she said, adding it ultimately likely was given to another neighbor kid.

Now of Freeport, Dave Fisher said he never thought an item from his childhood would pop up in his life, much less from New York.

He commended the lunch-

box’s current owners, Laurie Sykes, and her 9-year-old son, Connor, for their attempts in trying to find him.

“They did a good job researching,” Dave Fisher said.

Sykes and Connor deduced the 1961 lunchbox’s owner likely attended Harrison Street Elementary School based on his address and the schools that existed at that time. They also placed Dave Fisher’s birthdate between 1952 and 1956.

“They were only one year off,” Dave Fisher said, noting he was born in 1957.

But, he added, they got the school right. He attended Harrison Street School as a kindergartner before his family moved to St. Charles in 1963.

who has his fire science degree and is graduating from paramedic training, he said.

Fisher has worked at the Park Hills Golf Courses in Freeport for the last 32 years, he said.

Sykes has said her son would love to talk with Dave Fisher to learn what it was like when he was his age.

The boy also would welcome a letter or an email, she has said.

Dave Fisher said he was open to talking with them.

“I’ll probably email them and tell them I’m the person,” he said.

Thursday, Sykes said she was surprised the person she and Connor were looking for would be found so quickly.

“That is so cool,” she said.

She noted Connor had not read the story by Thursday morning.

“I will talk to Connor tonight,” she said, “let him know what happened.”

Police: Woman FREE ADMISSION charged with JUNE 6, 7 & 8 animal cruelty 10 VENUES OF FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A Campton Hills woman, who police said kept 13 dogs in a house covered with feces, has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, Campton Hills police said in a report.

Anne Marie W. Cosgriff-Powell, 35, of the 40W900 block of Route 64, Campton Hills, also was cited with having too many dogs at her residence.

A police officer – along with a village zoning officer and Kane County Animal Control warden – visited Cosgriff-Powell’s residence May 12 after receiving a complaint, police reported.

Upon their arrival, police said, they could hear several dogs barking inside the house and saw trash blocking the front door. Cosgriff-Powell said she had 13 dogs in her house and claimed to work for an animal rescue and was licensed, police reported.

The zoning officer reportedly told her that didn’t matter because animal rescues aren’t allowed within the village, and households aren’t allowed to have more than three dogs.

Upon the Animal Control warden’s request, the group went inside the home.

Police said the family room and kitchen area were

covered in dog feces. Three dogs shared a cage; two dogs shared a cage; and some cages appeared too small for the dogs it contained, police said.

Some bowls were in the cages, but none reportedly had water.

Additionally, police reported, trays at the bottom of some cages were overflowing with a combination of urine, water and dissolved feces.

“The stench was overpowering,” police reported.

Cosgriff-Powell was given 24 hours to come into compliance. The smell reportedly remained when officials returned May 13.

“Within a couple of minutes in the residence, this officer was on the verge of gagging,” police reported.

Cosgriff-Powell had complied, police reported, noting only two dogs were caged, and one dog was in another room.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said she had taken four dogs to DuPage County Animal Care and Control and some to Kane County Animal Control.

A police report dated May 14 indicated that a veterinarian with Kane County Animal Control said the dogs were sick with diarrhea and fever and were in quarantine.

The veterinarian didn’t know what their illness was or if the sickness could be transferred to humans or other pets, police said.

asloboda@shawmedia.com Jake Schmidt was a self-described nerd when he graduated from St. Patrick Catholic School in St. Charles to Marmion Academy in Aurora.

But in the weeks leading up to his high school commencement Thursday, the 18-year-old Campton Hills resident said he now sees the importance of education outside the classroom, and he has become a more well-rounded person.

The Kane County Chronicle this week is highlighting local high school graduating seniors.

Community service helped increase Schmidt’s awareness of surrounding communities and cultures, he said, noting the activities helped get him out of his comfort zone.

His volunteerism – for such programs as Special Olympics and at such places as Hope D. Wall School in Aurora – did not go unnoticed.

Anthony Tinerella, Marmion’s head of school and principal, nominated Schmidt for the award. In an email, he described Schmidt as an inspiration to the Marmion community and said the teen exemplifies the characteristics and values of humility, perseverance, loyalty, integrity, honor and selflessness.

Schmidt’s parents, Kevin and Peggy, said their son has a lot of integrity, truly enjoys volunteering and does it with a positive attitude.

“Jake’s got a heart for service,” his father said.

Modest, Schmidt said the credit belongs elsewhere.

“I view the award as awarding my school and community as a whole because it gave me opportunities to get involved in service,” Schmidt said.

Programs at Marmion connected Schmidt to service projects, including food drives, he said, but the Peacebuilders Initiative – a summer program of the Bernardin Center at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago – propelled his commitment to volunteerism even more.

Peacebuilders encouraged students to do a project in their own communities, which is where Schmidt’s involvement with Hope Wall came from, he said.

Marmion and Hope Wall – a school serving severely handicapped students from ages 3 to 21 – have been developing a relationship for the past two years, Schmidt said.

“We’re trying to build it up,” he said, later adding that helping kids with disabilities is a passion of his.

“If I were to be in their shoes,” he said, “I’d like to see other people cared about me.”

Max Meyer is just a year out of high school but is miles from his life at Marmion Academy in Aurora.

The 19-year-old Illinois Air National Guard member said he will be in Japan for a week next month as a crew chief.

“I’m an airplane mechanic,” Meyer said. “I love my job. It’s the best job in the Air Force, that’s for sure.”

The Kane County Chronicle is looking back at recent high school graduates who have been featured in its annual series Max Meyer the past few years.

Meyer was profiled last year.

Meyer left for U.S. Air Force basic training in July and graduated in September at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

According to the U.S. Air Force, he was one of 43 airmen in a class of 437 trainees who earned the distinction of being an honor graduate.

“Marmion prepared me for it pretty well,” Meyer said. “Growing up in a military family, I kind of knew the lifestyle I was going into.”

Because he had further training through January, Meyer said he didn’t start his freshman year at Eastern Illinois University until the spring semester. He is studying mechanical engineering.

“It’s always something I’ve wanted to do,” he said, noting he eventually will have to transfer to another college to pursue that field.

Last year, one of Meyer’s teachers at Marmion, Victor Pinks II, described Meyer as “one of the most inquisitive minds” he’s met.

“He never stops asking questions, and he’s not afraid to learn or try anything,” Pinks said then.

When asked whether he wanted to say anything else about his past year, Meyer thanked his parents, Debby and Dave Meyer of Geneva, for their help.

Chris Sanzeri, a Hope Wall teacher who was contacted by Schmidt last year, said in an email that the teen wanted to create a lasting partnership between the two schools, and they decided to use Special Olympics and athletics as a good place to start.

At Hope Wall, Schmidt took the lead in creating and organizing a Motor Activities Training Day, a developmental sports program designed for students who can’t participate in regular Special Olympics activities, Sanzeri said.

“It was a pleasure to work with a young man with such a deep passion to help people with disabilities,” Sanzeri said. “Staff members at Hope Wall had nothing but praise and compliments for Jake and all of the other volunteers

from Marmion Academy.”

Schmidt plans to continue his education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, a decision he made during spring break.

He doesn’t yet know what he wants to pursue, he said, but his interests include engineering, physical therapy and a childhood dream of owning and managing a big resort – an idea that stemmed from his love of vacations.

Three cited in St. Charles tobacco compliance check KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Three sales clerks Monday were cited during the latest round of tobacco compliance checks, according to St. Charles police Thursday in a news release.

A total of 36 businesses licensed to sell tobacco products were inspected, according to the release.

Those cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a minor were Carlos E. Villagomez at BP Gas Station, 1505 Lincoln Highway;

Lady Elizabeth Jimenez-Perez at BP Gas Station, 1660 W. Main St.; and Scott L. O’Brien at 7-Eleven, 1705 W. Main St., the release stated.

Each clerk was issued a notice to appear in Kane County Branch Court on June 19, according to the release.

Monday’s inspection was the last of three inspections scheduled during the 2013-14 tobacco grant period. The checks are conducted in partnership with the Illinois Liquor Commission, thanks to a fiscal year 2013-14 financial grant, the re-

lease stated.

St. Charles police have received the grant and conducted inspections every year since its inception in 2004. The ultimate goal in conducting the inspections is to reinforce compliance and educate tobacco retailers, according to the release. As part of the grant, the state Liquor Commission each year provides tobacco retailers with educational materials.

During inspections, officers also ensure that retailers have posted required signage regarding State Tobacco Laws.

County Board members tour detention center cal corridors, which had doorways to a library, computer lab, gym and, among other rooms, living quarters.

About 60 juveniles were in custody Thursday, Spalis said, noting youth come from such counties as DuPage, DeKalb and Kendall in addition to Kane.

The average stay is 12 days, he said, but some might stay much longer. Days are broken into six 40-minute class periods, Spalis said, but the center is in the process of shifting the schedule to six 50-minute periods so that the youths get the same amount of class time as public school students.

There are four classroom teachers, whose students are grouped by security rather than by grade, Spalis said.

County Board members expressed appreciation for what the teachers do.

“To walk into a situation like this has got to be difficult,” said Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee. “I think it’s commendable.”

Her question wasn’t prompted by the teacher’s subject – math – but by the type of students he works with: juveniles in custody for pending court proceedings.

Allan, along with other members of the Public Service Committee, was touring the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles Township.

The center – which is on the same campus as the Kane County Judicial Center and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office – is a detention facility for ages 10 to 17.

Thousands of flags expected at Healing Fields MAPLE PARK – Starting this morning, those driving past Kaneland High School can get a glimpse at thousands of American flags that will be on display throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

The Healing Field display will have an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kaneland High School, 37W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

There will be 6 a.m. flag-raising ceremonies and 8 p.m. flag-lowering events each day through Monday.

At noon Monday, the Healing Field Memorial Day ceremony will be at Kaneland. The event will include students and School District 302 officials, and many of those who will attend their own villages’ events earlier Monday are expected to be at the Kaneland event.

Batavia Ave., Geneva, on the front grounds of Building A. The guest speaker will be Col. Duane Buttell Jr., an Air Force veteran who flew combat missions in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star.

• MAPLE PARK: In addition to the Kaneland event, American Legion members from Post 312 in Maple Park on Monday will place American flags on the graves of service members at six Maple Park cemeteries. A three-mile walk-a-thon will be from 8 a.m. to noon May 31 at the Rotolo Middle School track field, 1501 S. Raddant Road, Batavia, to benefit the family of Mike Hubert, who has battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for the past

“I just felt like there was something I could do,” said Danielle Burciaga, who is helping organize the walk-athon. She also recently helped collect gift cards, household items and other donations for the family as Hubert’s wife, Kelli, has had to take over as family caretaker and sole financial provider.

The Huberts have three children. Burciaga is a Illinois Central School Bus driver, and has gotten to know the Hubert family through driving their children to school. The entry fee for the walk-a-thon is $10 a person or $20 a family. Cash and check donations also are welcome, Burciaga said.

OPINIONS Zen and the art of morel hunting RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger When Robert M. Pirsig’s “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” appeared in 1974, my friends and I all read it. The fact that no one understood it didn’t matter.

We instead pretended our lives had been transformed by this novel-length koan.

If you’re unfamiliar with koans, they resemble riddles used by Zen Buddhist monks to help students attain satori, or enlightenment. The koan most familiar to Westerners is, “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”, requiring novitiates to transcend their intellect in favor of intuition.

Students might realize that one hand clapping is impossible, just as enlightenment is impossible when distracted by daily encumbrances, like temptation or anger. One hand clapping might describe their heartbeat. Or, simply, silence.

Reading Pirsig led to “Zen and the Art of Archery,” Eugen Herrigel’s memoir as a Zen student. One night, the Japanese Zen master entered the darkened indoor archery range, strung his bow, shot one arrow, then another, toward the target. Turning on the lights, Herrigel discovered the first arrow dead center, and the second splitting the first.

The secret? “The archer ceases to be conscious of himself as the one who is engaged in hitting the bull’s-eye ... .” In other words, give up trying to win, and you succeed. The best tennis backhand comes when not thinking about it.

“So, Rick,” you’re asking, “what does this have to do with mushrooms?”

Ah, yes, my ostensible topic. Well, it’s the season for hunting morel mushrooms, a quest analogous to Arthurian knights searching for the

“People go to their graves not giving up where they found morels,” my son, Jay, told my wife, Tia, and me, on our way to the woods one recent May afternoon (somewhere in northern Illinois, that’s all I can divulge).

To rout out truffles, people use pigs. No such porcine hound dog smells morels, however, so we branch out.

From Internet sources, we’ve gathered morels often grow near downed timber, especially elms. Our eyes scan last fall’s leaf cover for a one- or twoinch tan stem supporting what resembles a cone-shaped brain.

After an hour, morel-less, I give up searching. I’d like to report that in paradoxical Zen fashion, the instant I stop looking, I find what I’m looking for. Rather, I happen on things equally precious: bunches of blue spring beauties; vast carpets of bluebells; several trills of red-winged blackbirds; the knocking of a pileated

woodpecker; plate-sized orange mushrooms shelved on an ancient log fallen across a dry, sandy runoff creek.

Back at the car, Jay reveals half a dozen morels, Tia one.

For me, perhaps it’s a rationalization, but as on recent fishing trips, the outing has become not about the catch, but about the release – getting out of the house, out of town, out of myself. It’s about sending the arrow into perfect flight because the target no longer matters.

After all, you can’t miss if the only thing you’re aiming for is all of nature.

After the Supreme Court tossed out the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns as unconstitutional, city officials were faced with a delicate task: how to protect the public from gun violence without running afoul of the constitutional right articulated in the court’s landmark 2008 ruling? That they managed to strike the right balance has been affirmed by a federal judge in a decision that should encourage other communities that want to enact sensible gun reform.

U.S. District Court Judge James E. Boasberg ruled last week that the city’s gun laws, some of the toughest in the nation, pass constitutional muster. The regulations, banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines while imposing registration requirements

for handguns and long guns, were enacted in response to District of Columbia vs.

Heller, the case that struck down the ban on handgun possession.

“The District of Columbia knows gun violence” is the sobering introduction to the judge’s ruling. Judge Boasberg wrote: “Asking gun owners to take a short class and pass a minor test – once – in order to wield deadly weapons fits the District’s interests in public safety and police protection.”

No doubt the ruling will be appealed, and no doubt the District’s gun laws will continue to come under attack from gun rights advocates on Capitol Hill. But we hope the precept that gun rights can be upheld while discharging the government’s obligation to public safety will prevail – not only as law but also as a matter of common sense.

‘I KNOW I’M GOING TO PEAK’ St. Charles East hurdler Decker enters sectionals in good position

T. CHARLES – St. Charles East junior Kyle Decker touts aggressiveness as the key to hurdling success.

Still, he’s equally adamant about the importance of restraint in the right doses.

Decker knows he must channel both qualities at today’s IHSA Class 3A Bartlett Sectional boys track and field meet at Elgin. That’s especially true in the 110-meter event, where he’s a hybrid of the top seed and last man standing.

The seventh-place finisher in the event at sectionals last spring, Decker watched the six athletes ahead of him graduate.

“Progression-wise, I’ve felt really well, actually. All my times keep dropping and it’s just … I know I’m going to peak at sectionals,” he said.

“I just feel like I’m ready and the team’s ready, so it’s going to be fun.”

There’s plenty of reason for optimism for Decker, and neither he nor anyone else has to dig deep for it.

Competing on the same Elgin track at last week’s Upstate Eight Conference meet, he established personal records in the 110s (15.21) and 300s (40.9) en route to a pair of runner-up finishes.

Both times are on the edge of the fully automated timing qualifying standards for next week’s IHSA Class 3A boys state meet at Eastern Illinois in Charleston. The top two athletes in each event advance regardless of time.

“Yeah, it’ll be nice running on the same track, because that’s where I did my best so far this season,” Decker said. “So just hope for the best.”

Then, after that, potentially hope some more.

“He should get down [to state], and then it’s a crapshoot,” Saints coach Chris Bosworth said. “It’s insane this year in the 110s. You look, and if you can’t break 15 [seconds], you don’t stand a shot to get in [finals]. So he’s going to have to qualify, and then he’s going to have to PR like crazy.”

No worries there, as competition fuels Decker, anyway. One likely hurdling mate is Batavia junior Peyton Piron, who won the 300s at conference and placed sixth in the 110s.

Once the starting gun sounds, however, Decker is off with tunnel vision, ideally with only the finish line in his front view.

“It’s more being aggressive, I’ve found,” Decker said. “You can not be timid when you’re going after this race. In both hurdles races, you’ve just got to go after the first hurdle

and just glide on through the rest.”

Saints senior middle distance runner Charles Hearn has seen Decker and the rest of his teammates handle the beginning of the state series stretch run admirably.

“When it gets to the end, it kind of gets to crunch time, and it seems to run out of time really fast,” Hearn said. “But also, each meet adds momentum to our season.”

In addition to Decker, Bosworth feels East is in strong position to qualify at least three relays as well as a handful of individual entries.

“I’m just going to get the bus there,” Bosworth said. “It’s on them.

They know what to do. They know what to expect. It’s been our goal all season is to get these times in, get these relays in.”

Now it’s time to compete. And be aggressive.

ADDISON – Batavia junior Karina Rosales made her coach look pretty shrewd.

Rosales, who was shifted from forward to midfield as part of tactical tweaks from Bulldogs girls soccer coach Mark Gianfrancesco early in the second half Thursday, pushed forward in the waning stages of regulation and uncorked the game-winning shot from about 15 yards out as Batavia eliminated Fremd, 1-0, in an IHSA Class 3A Addison Trail Regional semifinal.

“That was the best feeling ever, to be honest,” Rosales said. “Especially with such little time left and everyone cheering, it was a good feeling.”

The Bulldogs advance to tonight’s regional championship match against top-seeded St. Charles North. Batavia will be at a rest deficit – the match versus Fremd was resumed two days after lightning halted play in the first half Tuesday night since Batavia’s graduation was Wednesday – but the Bulldogs should have leftover adrenaline to lean on after Thursday’s thrilling conclusion.

“I looked up and there was someone in front of me but I thought I had a pretty good shot,” said Rosales, who scored with 2:53 to go. “The keeper couldn’t really see because that girl was right in front of her so when she dived, it was too late.”

The match re-started Thursday with 16:09 to play in the first half, and ninth-seeded Fremd (7-12-1) carried play for the balance of the first half against eighth-seeded Batavia (12-8-1).

When the Vikings continued to be the aggressors in the opening minutes of the second half, Gianfrancesco figured some changes were in order. Chief among them were shifting Rosales and Mackenzie Foster into the midfield to try and keep from

Gianfrancesco said it’s an adjustment he’s made periodically this season.

“Depending on the opponent and how physical they are, that’s really where it is, because the girls I [usually play in the midfield], they’re finesse … they can knock it around if the team’s not cracking them and stuff but then when we see them not winning the [5050 balls], you drop a couple of the bulldogs in there and they’re more aggressive going forward,” Karina Rosales Gianfrancesco said.

Rosales made a few other deep pushes upfield as Fremd struggled to track her during the second half but she was unable to generate a prime scoring chance until drilling the game-winner past Fremd goalkeeper Kelsey Stone.

Rosales also helped her team generate a strong chance with a little less than 10 minutes to play in the second half when she drew a whistle after being taken down just outside the penalty area. Bulldogs sophomore Rachel Reinecke’s low free kick bounded beyond Fremd’s wall but Stone made the stop.

Sophomore Megan McEachern and senior Kim Stanczak also flirted with opening the scoring for Batavia earlier in the second half.

Fremd coach Steve Keller conceded that Batavia began to take control as the match proceeded deeper.

“I thought the way we started [Thursday] was better than the way we started [Tuesday],” Keller said. “I was encouraged by that first half. We got to the second half and we created some opportunities but we weren’t able to put them in.”

much busier tonight against a St. Charles North team that blasted Batavia, 4-0, when the teams met early this season in an Upstate Eight Conference River match.

North has had a chance to rest since topping Lake Park, 2-0, in a regional semifinal Tuesday, making Rosales’ ability to win the match in regulation all the more helpful for the Bulldogs.

“As I told the girls just now, we’re going to need more from everyone [against North],” Gianfrancesco said.

“So there’s going to be a lot of subbing to try and keep people fresh.”

Rosales expressed optimism that Batavia can pull the upset.

“If we come out like we played like in the second half, I think it could go either way,” Rosales said.

Batavia grad Seiton eager to get healthy Danny Seiton is a baseball player. But he hasn’t seen a pitch, fielded a ground ball or taken the field this season, and that has him understandably frustrated.

Seiton, a sophomore infielder at Northern Illinois and a Batavia graduate, separated his shoulder during the winter, keeping him off the field this year. In fact, the recovery process went so awry that the decision was made to shut him down for the entire season.

“I separated my shoulder over winter break. It was supposed to be an eight-week recovery, and for some reason it didn’t heal how I wanted it to and I’ve been having problems with it throughout the season,” Seiton said. “So we just decided to redshirt me and to let my shoulder heal on

its own.”

For Seiton, the situation is all too familiar. Injuries have followed him the past several seasons, going back to his time with the Bulldogs. Unfortunately, he’s used to being hurt.

And he’s used to the emotional state that comes with it.

“I was real frustrated.

Sterling, Maris pairing paying off

f Batavia boys tennis senior Ryan Sterling had any doubt how deeply entrenched he’s become as a doubles player, they were erased during a recent practice.

Sterling has settled in as doubles partners with Adam Maris but took a quick detour back to singles, his former niche.

“A funny thing was I actually played singles again at practice and I was serving out wide, and Tim Murat, our No. 1 singles player, returned the ball, and it went to where Adam usually is, so I just let it go because I thought he was going to be there to return it for me,” Sterling said with a laugh. “I think I’ve gotten used to the doubles and now I’m not as much singles anymore.”

Sterling won’t have to worry about such lapses this weekend as he and Maris eye a state berth together at the IHSA Waubonsie Valley Boys Tennis Sectional.

Sterling and Maris, a junior, take major momentum into sectionals after the duo

won the Upstate Eight Conference River No. 1 doubles championship last weekend, avenging a regular-season loss to St. Charles North’s duo of Grant Spellman and Aaron Amburgey in the final.

The regular-season loss to North was one of only three for Sterling and Maris on the season.

Sterling has enjoyed a decorated Adam Maris career with the Bulldogs, and could become the third player in program history – along with stalwarts Josh Cogan Ryan Sterling and Frank Vermaat – to hit the 100-career win mark if he and Maris win a pair of matches at sectionals.

But Sterling is more focused on qualifying for next week’s IHSA state tournament after some disappointing near-misses in singles, including a frustrating sectional loss last year against a player from West Aurora that he had

previously beaten.

“That left a real bad taste in his mouth,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “I think that may have been one of the things that helped him to think about doubles a little bit. He’s really enjoyed doubles. He’s really good friends with Adam and those guys have just really jelled nicely as a doubles team. They both have great hands, they both anticipate well and they see the court well. And they’re smart players.”

Nelson said it wasn’t determined until just before the season in March that Sterling would move to doubles and team with Maris.

Sterling, likely to pursue club tennis when he attends the University of Illinois in the fall, said the change challenged his muscle memory.

“You want to serve in the middle and you want to do a bunch of stuff that singles players do, like call the alley points out,” Sterling said.

“So you’ve got to stop doing that and you have to realize there’s a bunch of different strategy that you do [in doubles].

This is Asquini’s 11th season coaching East and Year 3 of his second go-around as baseball coach.

Cougars start stretch with ‘W’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Peoria and Clinton keep clinging closely to the Cougars, the Midwest League’s first club to 31 victories this season.

Counting Thursday’s 6-1 home win against Clinton, the Cougars will play their nearest pursuers for the Western Division’s firsthalf title 18 times in 21 games.

That stretch sets up as challenge either way, but takes on added difficulty considering the recent promotions of bullpen stalwarts Nathan Dorris and Zack Godley to Advanced-A Daytona.

At least it should.

Survey a perpetually confident clubhouse and the biggest concern is who has the remote control and which game of cards represents the dealer’s choice.

“It’s fun getting put in pressure situations and stuff like that, and we’re winning, you know,” right-handed reliever Tyler Bremer said. “Even if you’re not having the best season individually, which maybe some guys aren’t, it’s still fun because we’re winning.

“And at the end of the day, that’s what’s important. To this team, at least. It’s not the personal goals of getting called up or making this team, making an All-Star team or having this ERA, it’s just winning ballgames.”

Righty Paul Blackburn helped assure the Cougars (31-16) didn’t stray from that path in the opener of a six-game homestand against the LumberKings and Chiefs, who now sit a respective six and 3½ games behind Kane County in the standings.

Blackburn cruised through seven scoreless innings, spacing four hits, six strikeouts and one hit batsman.

“Bam, bam bam,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “Just attacked the hitters and mixed his off-speed accordingly and really gave us seven ... great innings.”

As usual, Blackburn (5-1) worked quickly, taking the ball, firing, then taking the ball again.

The approach matched the Cougars’ don’t-think-twice attitude toward their pitching staff, namely the relief corps.

“We’re not worried. We have a lot of arms and our bullpen has been our strength this year and will continue to be,” third baseman/catcher Ben Carhart said.

“So we’re not worried at all in that aspect.”

For as surely as they carry themselves, the Cougars realize they’re likely in for a fight until the first-half finale June 15 at Beloit.

One LumberKing already took the liberty of making himself at home at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Clinton designated hitter Jeff Zimmerman, an Andrew and Northern Illinois product, fielded about 20 ticket requests for friends and family for each game of the series.

He lunched at the St. Charles Portillo’s near the team hotel Thursday afternoon, completing the circle of his return to the region.

“Chicago dog, cheeseburger,” Zimmerman said before going 0 for 4. “Probably not the healthiest meal, but I had a water with it.”

Zimmerman, who saw more of the independent, Crestwood-based Windy City ThunderBolts than the Cougars as a child, recalled playing a couple dreary midweek games here with the Huskies.

This time, the setting brightened considerably weather-wise.

As for the game, Clinton (24-21) couldn’t quite match the Cougars’ persistent and efficent attack. The Cougars were out-hit, 8-7.

Kane County got the only runs it needed in the fourth. Carhart’s ground-ball single up the middle scored Jake Hannemann one batter before Carlos Penalver scored on Yasiel Balaguert’s double-play groundout.

Balaguert added a solo homer in the eighth, which eventually prompted the ejection of protesting Clinton manager Scott Steinmann, who wasn’t certain the ball left the park.

Jose Arias finished the game with two innings of one-run, two strikeout relief. He entered in a non-save situation as Johnson uses a late innings by committee approach. Godley’s seven saves still are tied for the league lead even though he hasn’t pitched in the MWL since May 5.

“We like our chances,” Nelson said. “Naperville Central’s a phenomenal team. Obviously they’re going to be tough, and then you’ve got Marmion in there, you’ve got Waubonsie Valley, Metea Valley, IMSA’s in there. There’s a lot of talent in our sectional so we can’t take it easy now.

proach. I don’t mean anything, any harm. So it was life saving and career saving.”

Marshall joked that his opening monologue of thank you’s sounded like a retirement speech, and he had a special one for coach Marc Trestman, a big part of Marshall’s happiness in Chicago and desire to stay with the Bears.

“What I’m about to say about coach has nothing to do with football: best in the business,” he said. “So thankful that you’re here coach. Coach is amazing. He’s a man that I look up to. He’s a man that I would like to be one day.”

In addition to Trestman and his good friend Jay Cutler,

Marshall has been surrounded by a good offense, and part of his transformation helped him view the contract negotiations differently than he might have earlier in his career.

“I think my numbers speak for themselves, but when you look at allocation, I would love to be the highest-paid receiver in the league, I think every guy should work toward that, but we’re able to have guys like [Jermon] Bushrod, we’re able to have Matt Forte, Martellus Bennett, we have these guys that mean so much to this offense and the success of this team,” he said. “It’s one of those things that you really have to sit back and ask yourself, what is it really about?

That was the biggest thing through negotiations.”

Now, Marshall doesn’t have a contract situation looming over his head as he and the Bears enter Year 2 under Trestman with plenty of potential, enough to get Marshall his

first playoff appearance.

“I think we have a special group. We work hard. Like [general manager] Phil (Emery) was saying earlier, just seeing the intensity out there and the guys having fun. Their approach to practice to their approach to the film room, it’s amazing, and I think if we continue to do that, we’ll continue to grow,” he said. “We have a tremendous upside, but again, we have to prove it. But if we continue to work, we’ll be OK. “What we did last year was really tough. You bring in a new coach with a really sophisticated offense, like we like to say, ‘It’s science to our football.’ You got Jay, he’s been in different offenses almost every other year. It’s a tough transition, so for us to make that big of leap last year says a lot about our coaching staff and our players. So this year I think that that’s something to build off and we can possibly even be better.”

LAKE FOREST – When the Bears took the chance and traded for Brandon Marshall, this week’s news of his contract extension was the best-case-scenario result for the team.

For Marshall, it also has been the culmination of a three-year life turnaround, affirming that Chicago was the perfect destination for him.

In an emotional news conference Thursday, Marshall thanked everyone he could in the Bears’ organization, from the groundskeepers to the video team, showing appreciation for an organization he said saved his career.

“Well, the transformation started in my life before I was traded here, but I think it was career-saving,” Marshall said.

“I don’t think I’d be sitting in this position talking about an extension.”

Marshall described the Bears fostering a “safe environment” for him. He was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in June 2011, and Marshall told a story about being frustrated at practice last season and how the Bears handled it.

“Last year, I was having Brandon problems a Marshall little bit in practice and I just threw my helmet and my gloves down and I started pacing up and down the sidelines,” he said. “Some people can look at me and judge me and jump down my throat. But everyone gave me my space and in a couple of plays I was back out there.

“So that’s why it’s a safe environment for me. Because they understand that I love this game. They know my ap-

oesn’t it seem that the prolonged snow and iffy weather have more or less canceled springtime?

With Memorial Day just ahead and after a taste of hot, humid weather, why not just get in the mood for June?

Excitement abounds here at Pine View. For many years now, activity leader Kathy Johnson has planned and staged a softball game.

Kathy shared her scrapbook, featuring highlights of previous games – gathering at the main parking lot; and after a flag ceremony and the national anthem, staff and selected residents paired off, batting from a T-ball device. Other ballpark favorites, including hot dogs, chatting and sharing baseball memories.

Holy cow!

Cheering, clapping and the good spirits of the day support the goals, which are to build relationships, promote mobility and as Elliot Triplett, the administrator, emphasizes, “Above all, have fun!”

The Pine View version of spring training – staff mentoring residents – is in progress. Rain or shine, the event is open to families and interested others. The

As I daydream about June activities on the other side of the fence, so to speak, I am heading out to Norton’s farm (west of St. Charles on Route 64 just before what some of us still call Wasco).

Had a chat with my wise farmer friend, Dexter Norton, the other day.

He’s got the sense of my needed vegetable plants and favorite flowers, so all Mister Z needs to do is gather my order and see if our handy Mike from across the street will keep things watered and weeds pulled as he watches from the patio and recovers from his surgery.

There’s got to be some great stuff out at Tom Stopka’s Trellis on Kirk Road.

Got to feed those birds who have shown

extraordinary loyalty.

While on the road for me, skinny spouse knows to stop at Dunkin’ Donuts to greet Sonny and the gang and get a best-in-town iced coffee. (Keep an eye on the roof for the police crew and their annual fundraising roost.)

Meanwhile, back at Pine View, let me begin the lengthy list of five-star people who have been so capable and so kind, always keeping on the sunny side.

Congratulations on this, her wedding day, to Jill from therapy. Lexie from therapy keeps me on the straight and narrow, but has just the right touch. CNA’s are unquestionably the backbone, heart and soul here.

Hail to Hansa, Neesha, Cheryl, Thelma and Waja.

Dining room servers George, Heled and D.J. are not only courteous and quick, they add the needed translation of menu language with sophisticated names down to the basics! They know where the strawberry vault is located, too. Ishmael from maintenance can fix anything.

Speaking of talented fixers, in just a few short minutes, our hairdresser, Lena,

transformed my sad mop into a highly praised and shiny fresh look. Lena is excited to announce her new shop at her home on the west side of St. Charles. Contact her at 630-806-5010. She’ll still book clients here, too. This is great news for me since she has searched everywhere for a gray hair and reports with a straight face that there are none to be found.

As ever and always, Donna Harris is the most valuable player. Check with her about admission and every other question will be answered with a smile and a solution.

Special acknowledgment was given to recipient Hannah Zimmer, who was awarded the inaugural John H. Wredling Scholarship Award. The scholarship, in Wredling’s name, will annually recognize the highest-ranking scholarship recipient based on the merits of community service, financial need and academic achievement.

The scholarship was created

in honor of John H. Wredling, a Rotary Club of St. Charles member who received the Lifetime Rotarian Award in March while celebrating his 100th birthday.

Wredling is a World War II veteran, and former superintendent of St. Charles School District 303. He was honored with the award for his commitment to education, the community and Rotary.

Sport sedan exudes muscle, handling finesse Audi is at the top of its game with the S4 all-wheel-drive sport sedan.

The 2014 S4 is fast, quiet and technologically efficient. The six-speed manual transmission in an S4 being tested for a week was as smooth and tight as any BMW stick product driven in recent years. BMW manual transmissions are in a league of their own, but this Audi six-speed feels comparable.

The S4 is Audi’s sport version of the A4.

The 3-liter, 333-horsepower supercharged V6 engine can move the $48,100, four-door from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds. On dry pavement, it can get back to 0 in a media tested 109 feet via help from the ventilated brakes, 13.6-inch discs in front and 13-inch discs in the rear.

P245 summer all-terrain tires are mounted on five-spoke alloy 17-inch wheels. Larger 19-inch wheels with a titanium finish are in a $1,300 package that also includes a metallic high-gloss black finish. A temporary spare is stored in the trunk.

What’s remarkable about the stopping efficiency is the weight that is being brought to a halt. The S4 weighs 3,847 pounds.

The test S4 averaged 20.1 miles per gallon operating on premium fuel.

Most of the driving was aggressive during the test week. Top track speed is limited to 155 mph. An available track is at Joliet’s Chicagoland Speedway. A tuned five-link suspension in front keeps the ride on an even keel. In the rear is a tuned trapezoidal link system.

The ride can be felt as it is firm, but it is not as firm as competing two-door, rearwheel-drive sport coupes. After all, the S4 is a sedan with a rear seat and family comfort is kept in mind.

The cabin is insulated against outside or engine noise to a remarkable degree.

As expected, the S4 is trimmed for elegance with leather seats (suede inserts) and brushed aluminum surrounds.

Power includes remote entry, pushbutton start, sunroof, door locks, windows (four express), exterior mirrors (heated) and front seats. Niceties include xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights and a 10-speaker sound system.

For 2014, Audi’s S4 compact sport sedan has a supercharged 3-liter, 333-horsepower V6 engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. An automated seven-speed manual is optional.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper Now, a few words concerning an unsettling situation. Two days after the S4 arrived for review, the rear view mirror came undone. An upper half of the housing detached from the lower half. It happened while the driver was doing minor adjusting of the mirror. A thin connector tab on the housing broke off. Attempts to reconnect the housing pieces succeeded in part, but adjusting the mirror became a touchy matter.

In this case, the housing materials and their attachment equipment were made of cheap plastic. Why do this in a $48,100 vehicle? Either more substantial materials or a better housing design is essential for a performance sedan costing this much. It is as though Cinderella

went to the palace dance wearing one good slipper and another taken from the freebie bin at a Goodwill store.

A problem that does not relentlessly plague – but certainly is relevant to – reviewers of new cars, is the inability to detect what could be issues in days or years ahead. Fortunately, the rear view mirror housing issue arose during an automotive writer’s test week. What if the same or a similar S4 were sold and the owner had the same problem after a few months of ownership? Audi probably would make good on a warranty claim, but why be put in that position?

Earlier this year a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu received a favorable review on these pages. What was not known in the early months of 2014 is that by April the Malibu would be part of a manufacturer recall ordered by the federal government.

Brakes could fail if a vacuum hose became disconnected. Stopping distance

would be longer and more pressure would have to be applied on the brake pedal. The failure was a problem on 140,067 of the mid-size sedans. The repair, which is to reprogram a control module, is covered under Chevrolet’s (General Motors) new-car warranty.

Brakes and rear view mirrors are supplied to car makers by original automotive parts manufacturers. If there is a defect, the car maker can always blame the supplier.

Even so, the new cars coming off the assembly line are the responsibility of car manufacturers. A defective rear view mirror housing is a minor matter pertaining to a piece of interior trim.

Hopefully it is not indicative of more serious issues dealing with quality in regard to basic mechanicals, such as powertrain (usually done in-house and not by outside suppliers), brakes, suspension, cooling and heating systems.

‘Days of Future Past’ is the best X-Men movie

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now It’s safe to say that among both hardcore and casual fans of movies made from comic books, the “X-Men” series has gotten some of the highest accolades.

It’s been, for the most part, a classy bunch of films featuring a generous helping of fascinating characters. The sole entry that didn’t quite hit the mark was “X-Men: The Last Stand.” That was also the only film in the series that didn’t have the stamp of producer-director Bryan Singer. Singer only produced 2011’s “X-Men: First Class,” but that film was under the capable direction of Matthew Vaughn. Singer returns to fullfledged producer-director status with “Days of Future Past,” and he’s made the best of these films to date.

The only warning to be dealt out in advance is that the opening frames greet viewers with pandemonium, with nonstop action that takes a while to make sense of but eventually becomes clear when the pace slows down enough to let the storytelling begin.

As happens so many times in a successful franchise, this film is going to be much easier to follow for those who have been watching the series from the start. In fact, even though care has been taken to satisfactorily explain what’s going on, some pieces of this one will be distracting to newcomers. You might want to first check out “X-Men: First Class,” which introduces the cast of actors who play the younger versions of X-Men heroes and villains Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr and Raven/ Mystique.

One of the best things about “Days of Future Past” (aside from the non-Moody Blues-related title) is that the film manages to mix the older and younger casts together in a story that puts time travel at its center and actually manages to pull it off. Time travel has long been a genre that writers have freely played with and changed the rules of as they went along. Here, along with some additional but temporary confusion, it works.

At the film’s start, things are going badly for the whole world. The longtime war between humans and mutants has turned far more vicious than either side had expected. The humans have created an army of creatures called Sentinels – tall, sleek humanoid things that are fast

They’ve been quite adept at their task, and the remaining mutants, including the current-day versions of the characters who originated the roles (Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, et al), know they’re in trouble. They, with the help of more recent mutant additions (notably Ellen Page) devise a plan to change history, to prevent the invention of the Sentinels, by sending one of their own back in time in order to … .

No, that won’t be given away here.

What will be revealed is that only the mind of the time traveling mutant will go back to 1973, the year of a certain fate-changing event, and that mind will become one with that mutant’s own younger body. The only member strong enough to take on this taxing challenge is Wolverine (Jackman), who never ages and whose body has remarkable healing powers. It’s another nice touch having Hugh Jackman play Wolverine both now and then, going back to meet the other younger mutants, played in the past by James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence (whose character of Raven/Mystique is not seen in the present).

Hmmm, this does sound confusing, doesn’t it? And there hasn’t even been

mention made yet of single-minded mutant-hating Dr. Bolivar Trask (the excellent Peter Dinklage) or the fact that the film’s plot neatly factors in a touch of JFK assassination theory.

Not to worry, all does come clear under the sure control of Singer and writer Simon Kinberg. When it’s time for action, it’s let loose. When the story could use a good laugh, it’s provided (especially in a scene where the young mutant named Peter, aka Quicksilver (Evan Peters), makes things laugh-outloud-worthy by besting a group of armed military guards in slapstick fashion).

The film also has its serious dramatic sides, during which it focuses on personal relationships, philosophical ideas and historical incidents.

But no front seat is taken by drama or action or comedy, and the mix of all three is what makes the film work so well. There’s also a terrific ending that will please longtime followers, and a post-credits ending that introduces the series’ next menacing villain. Hint: That second ending also offers a hint of how the pyramids were built.

by Bryan Singer. The film stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Peter Dinklage. It is rated PG-13.

Couple reluctant to help freeloading relative Try the power of the pen Dear Abby: My spouse and I, after many long years of school, advanced degrees and work in the corporate world, are now retired.

We are (we hope) financially secure. Both of us have siblings who were less successful for various reasons. What obligation do hardworking people have toward their less successful siblings, especially one who has been a freeloader his entire life?

“Rusty” sponged off his aging parents to keep from having to earn a decent living. We feel sorry for him, but it’s the bed he made for himself years ago when he took shortcuts.

As far as I’m concerned, only Rusty’s laziness prevents him from getting a part-time job to help pay the bills. If we give him money, we’ll have to do it for the other siblings on both sides.

‘Superfoods’ offer heart-healthy protection Dear Doctor K: You’ve written about “superfoods” that deliver a lot of nutritional bang for their buck. Do you have a list of superfoods for heart health?

Dear Reader: Many foods – from the everyday to the exotic – are rich in nutrients that help keep heart disease at bay. That’s good news, and it’s been documented in many scientific studies.

My colleagues in nutrition science at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School have published the following list of heart-healthy superfoods.

They and I use the word “superfoods” advisedly. Obviously, no food offers anything like perfect protection against any illness.

But many foods, when they are regularly consumed as part of your diet, improve your odds of escaping heart disease.

Since heart disease is the No. 1 cause of premature death, I’d call foods that reduce that risk “super.” I might even call them “super-duper.” Here’s a list: • Oatmeal. Oats help lower cholesterol. They also keep blood sugar steady, reducing the risk of obesity and diabetes, both linked to heart disease.

• Oranges are rich in choles-

• Avocados are a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. They contain substantial amounts of fiber, potassium, several vitamins and compounds that help lower cholesterol.

• Extra-virgin olive oil is rich in LDL cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fat. It discourages blood from clotting and helps steady blood sugar levels.

• Nuts are an excellent source of fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, all known to protect heart health.

Nuts lower harmful LDL choles-

terol, raise protective HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure.

• Salmon. Fatty fish such as salmon are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. People who eat more fish have a lower risk of dying from heart disease.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and I know you encourage teens not to smoke, so I don’t smoke because I’m a regular reader of your column.

My problem is that I’m worried about my dad.

He’s 44 and has been smoking for 30 years – ever since he was 14.

He says he’s addicted and it’s no use trying to stop now. Time after time, I’ve tried to get him to stop.

I love my dad and want him to be able to one day walk me down the aisle when I marry a man I love. I also would not be happy for my mother to wind up a young widow because of dad’s addiction. He is a wonderful father and husband, and everybody that knows him loves him.

American students spend less time in school than most students in other industrial countries. Many American educators agree with your father.

The consensus is that 200 days of productive education per year is ideal.

Germany, South Korea and Japan have the longest school year. Germany has 240 school days, while Japan and South Korea have the longest school year at 243 days.

As a former high school administrator, I agree that our schools should be in session about 200 days per year.

I am also aware that the number of days a student spends in school doesn’t necessarily guarantee a quality education. But it certainly can help!

And now let’s look at the story of today’s deal. South is in four spades. What should he do after West leads a trump and East follows suit?

South is worth a shot at game when North announces his fit.

Many declarers would draw trumps ending in hand, then run the club queen. But if East wins with his king and shifts to a diamond, the contract fails. The defenders take two diamonds, then sit back and wait for a heart trick.

The more experienced player realizes that the club finesse is a black herring. He will draw the second round of trumps with dummy’s nine or ace, then lead a low club toward his queen.

With this layout, if East ducks, South loses no club trick and can afford to concede one heart and two diamonds. Or, if East wins with his king and shifts to a diamond, declarer will collect six spades, one heart and three clubs for his contract.

Alternatively, if West could take South’s club queen with the king, he could not do better than to switch to a heart. But declarer would win with dummy’s ace and cash the two top clubs, discarding a diamond from his hand. He would lose only one trick in each side suit.

Finally, note that if West had found a heart lead, the contract could have always been defeated.
