I can only imagine what a thrill it would be for a high school baseball team to play on a minor league field. The sounds and ambiance alone would make it special.

The Kaneland and Batavia baseball teams had that chance Monday evening at Fifth Third Bank

Ballpark in Geneva, the home of the Kane County Cougars.

But before taking the field, both teams celebrated their seniors, as well as the parents of the seniors.

The night also was an opportunity for the two teams to raise money for cancer research in

a bear hug and smiled from ear to ear. I thought it was just such a great moment and really showed how the community is invested in their students and athletes.

New court date set in Prosecutors seek protective order trial for Shadwick King of victim interviews in Wright case S T . C H A R L E S T O W NSHIP – The next court date for a Geneva man convicted of murdering his wife has been pushed back a couple of months, according to court records.

Kane County Judge James Hallock on Thursday granted a defense motion to continue a hearing for arguments for a new Shadwick King trial to Aug. 5. The Shadwick King previous date of May 26 was stricken, court records state.

The motion was made for additional time to prepare because the issues to be argued are extensive and fairly complicated, Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress wrote in an email Thursday. Childress is representing King in the case.

Childress wrote she asked for a continuance of 30 days, but an August date was selected in part because of another trial on the judge’s calendar scheduled to begin in June.

If Hallock denies the motion for a new trial, the

hearing will continue on to King’s sentencing.

King was convicted March 16 of first-degree murder in the July 6, 2014, death of his wife, Kathleen, 32. A 12-member jury took about 5½ hours to deliberate the case.

Childress on April 15 filed a 36-page motion for Shadwick King, asking the court to vacate the finding of guilty for him or to grant him a new trial based on what she stated were multiple errors made by the prosecution and the court.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams on May 4 filed an 18-page response, asking the court to deny Childress’ motion and refuting the claims written in it.

Childress argued during the trial that Kathleen King left her home July 6 to go running or walking and died of natural causes because of sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

Prosecutors argued Shadwick King manually strangled his wife, changed her clothes and left her body partially on railroad tracks less than a half-mile from the Kings’ home on Geneva’s east side.

Sams said Shadwick King’s motive for killing his wife was that she began a relationship with a younger man she had met during military training.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A preliminary hearing on a protective order was scheduled for next month in the case regarding an Elburn police officer who was charged with 21 counts of sexual abuse.

David L. Wright, 53, of Campton Hills, is being held in the Kane County Jail on $500,000 bond for all of the charges: 10 counts of predatory criminal assault, each a Class X felony, and 11 counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony.

Wright was charged April 27, accused of sexually assaulting a child he knew over a period of years, from March 2005 to April 2015.

A hearing is scheduled for June 19 on prosecutors’ request for a protective order for any and all recordings of

forensic interviews of the minor child, now 17, during the investigation.

In a two-page court filing, prosecutors requested the judge to order that no copies of any forensic interview be made, except for those necessary for David L. Wright Wright’s defense.

The filing cited the sensitive nature of the victim’s interview, which “recounts the sexual assaults that occurred to her committed at the hands of the defendant.”

The request also seeks the judge’s order that any copies made remain in the defense attorney’s exclusive possession and be accounted for at the end of the case.

Wright would be permit-

ted to review the materials in the presence and supervision of defense counsel, an investigator or expert witnesses, but he should not be given any materials or copies, according to the court filing.

Prosecutors also ask the judge extend the protective order to the defendant, any of his attorneys, investigators, expert witnesses or any defense representative.

“The only restrictions that the [prosecutors] request are to protect the child and avoid the possible dissemination and re-victimization of the child,” according to the court filing.

Initially, Wright had been placed on paid administrative leave from Elburn, but now is on unpaid leave, officials said. He faces a sentence of between six and 30 years in prison on each Class X count and four to 15 years in prison on each Class 1 count.

‘PATRIOTISM IS PART OF WHO I AM’ After world tour, GHS grad will join U.S. Marine Corps for a career in combat logistics

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When it comes to her patriotism and love of the country, Caroline Stukel could think of no better career than joining the U.S. Marine Corps and defending the United States.

In fact, Stukel, 18, called her plan of going into the Marines “a dream come true.”

“Going into the infantry is limited for women right now, but then I would be involved in combat logistics,” Stukel said. “I take defending my country very seriously. I want to be in an area where I know I can make a difference. My patriotism is part of who I am, and I take it very seriously.”

But after she graduates from Gene-

va High School on Sunday, and before she joins the Marines, Stukel will participate in a gap year with the Winterline Global Skills Program.

Winterline was established in 2014 as a new organization “with the mission of giving young people the skills, confidence, perspective and resilience required to be successful, productive and happy individuals,” according to its website, www.winterline.com.

Starting Sept. 5 in Colorado, Stukel and 25 other high school graduates ages 17 to 20 will spend nine months in 10 countries – including the U.S. – learning more than 100 skills, Stukel said – with just a short break to come home for Christmas.

Wayne teen plans career teaching hearing-impaired preschoolers

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com WAYNE – Although she was born with hearing loss, Kayla Dunlea, 18, of Wayne never let it stop her from achieving her goals.

After graduating last Sunday from Kayla Dunlea St. Francis High School, Dunlea wrote in an email that she plans to pursue a career

in teaching hearing-impaired preschoolers.

In an email response, Dunlea wrote being hearing impaired made her realize everyone has a gift.

“People should view others as equals, regardless of any disabilities or differences,” Dunlea wrote. “I believe that being hard-of-hearing has helped me develop a sense of compassion in seeing others as extraordinary beings who have much to offer the world.”

With implanted devices to aid her hearing, she follows

most conversations by listening and reading lips.

“Usually people multitask as they communicate with others,” Dunlea wrote. “I have to look at people’s lips, facial expressions, as well as body language, to get the complete message.”

Volunteering at the Easter Seals Lily Garden Child Center during the past three summers was rewarding and inspired her career choice, she wrote.

“After being there one summer, I knew that I wanted to be a preschool teacher,”

Dunlea wrote.

Dunlea also recalled her time with her own preschool teachers.

“They taught me all of the skills I needed as a preschooler – but they also taught me how to communicate effectively using everything I had,” she wrote. “They taught me how to sign while speaking, using total communication to get my ideas across in a more complete manner.

But one of the most important things they taught me was to be confident.”

She wants to do the same

someday – help hearing-impaired preschoolers learn the same skills and confidence.

“Learning to live with hearing impairment is one thing,” Dunlea wrote. “Being confident and OK with who you are is an invaluable skill that will help you succeed in life.”

Helen Dunlea said her daughter always has been driven.

“She has always been like that – even as a toddler,” Helen Dunlea said. “She keeps working at it, and it’s not easy.”

While in high school, she played volleyball and for about eight years was involved in competitive volleyball on a club team, Stukel said.

Then she focused on military workouts five days a week, she said.

“I had a personal trainer who taught me what to do,” Stukel said. “Pull-ups, pushups, squats and lots of running.”

Stukel said she and her older brother both enjoy history, politics and social studies, so – once her military career is over – Stukel said she would like to become an American history teacher.

“I could continue my love for country, politics and history,” she said.

Veino-Stukel, admitted she was a little nervous about her daughter traveling all over the world for nearly a year.

“Nervous? Oh, yeah, you betcha,” Veino-Stukel said.

“I don’t know any mother who would not be nervous.”

But Veino-Stukel said she and her husband, Paul, both work in the international field, and her son, Jack, is attending the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with a major in international relations and a minor in Arabic – so the family is no stranger to world travel.

As to her daughter’s goal of combat logistics for the Marines, Veino-Stukel said it has been her passion for a long time.

“When they believe in something so passionately, you try to support them as much as possible,” Veino-Stukel said. “She takes good care of herself and stays in shape and prepared. And that is so totally Callie. I’m very proud of her.”

St. Charles East senior honored for film work ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles East senior plans to turn one of her childhood pastimes into a career.

Maria Kantak went from making home videos and writing scripts when she was 8 with her cousin to picking up multiple awards for her work during the past year.

Kantak Maria Kantak took first place in the Time Arts Category at the Upstate 8 Conference Student Art Exhibition for her silent short film “Don’t Play With The Masks.” She also took first place in the narrative category for her film “Growing Pains” at the D-303 Student Film Festival, and it is her second straight year winning that award.

Kantak’s other entry in the film fest, “The Radon

Monster,” took third place in cinematography at the event, and her “Be Brighter, Breathe Better” public service announcement also took third place in the Illinois Partners for Clean Air Shoot for the Skies PSA Video Contest.

“It is very gratifying to know that someone else enjoys my work as much as I do because I put so much of myself into each project, and I genuinely love what I’m doing,” Kantak said.

A scheduling change during Kantak’s sophomore year took her interest in video to the next level. When a class she wanted wasn’t available, she was encouraged to try something different.

Kantak enrolled in the Digital Media art class, then took Video and New Media and the rest of the school’s video classes during the rest of her high school career.

Kantak plans to attend College of DuPage next, then transfer to Columbia University to study film and cinematography. In the meantime, she will be a videographer at two weddings during the summer and become an intern with a friend who works on the set of the “Chicago Fire” TV show.

“It is so beautiful in the way it brings people together,” Kantak said of filmmaking. “I have made so many friends and met so many talented people through film and we are able to collaborate and share our techniques with one another.”

He was married to Joan Marion Gassmann on January 20th, 1951, and from that union sprang his legacy of a 64 year marriage and six children. I am one of the six.

The roof over our head and our daily bread was largely the result of his 26 year employment at Burgess Norton mfg., and I can’t help but reflect on how fortunate our family was to grow up in a time that allowed eight people to live comfortably on one moderate income. He lived all but seven years of his life in the house that he died in today, so the house seems as much and as important a part of the family as any one of us do, and countless people who have

John met Joan while working at Campana in 1950. He proposed to her atop the building next to the flagpole that overlooks Rte. 31. Fourteen years later they were the parents of six children: Laura, Jamie (Jan Neely), Bob, Charlie (Adriana Serna), Julie (Joe Newman) and Nathan. Then followed four grandchildren--Elizabeth, Craig, Kate and Joan, and two great-grandchildren--Nathan and Calvin.

John was blessed with an excellent memory. He was also inclined towards nostalgia. These two traits made for wonderful storytelling. Many of his best stories took place when he was twenty-one and recently returned from a one year stint at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. His favorite haunt at that time was a bar/restaurant that long-time Genevans will remember-John’s Tap. His friendships from that time remained friendships throughout his life. They included his two brothers, Nate and Lefty, Bart and Sue Nelson, Bob Wilson, Gordon Cummings and Gene and Toss Jaeger. The glue that held them together was a love for wit, jazz and the Chicago Bears. The man could make you laugh.

Now he is gone. So be it. 85 years is a good long time, and his passing was as gentle and enjoyable an experience as could be hoped for. Still, my brothers, sisters and I would like to offer a most sincere testimonial to our mother and the memory of our father. It is this: Of all the good fortune we’ve been blessed with over the years, the greatest was the loving and liberal upbringing you gave to us.

There will be a private memorial at a later date. In the meantime, the house still sits atop the east side hill, and the kitchen table always has an empty chair.

ST. CHARLES – Various temporary street closings will be in effect Monday for the 2015 Memorial Day Parade, according to a St. Charles police news release.

The parade will be at 10 a.m. Monday on Main Street (Route 64) in downtown St. Charles.

Main Street will be closed from 9:45 a.m. until about 11 a.m. from 7th Street on the west side of the Fox River to 5th Avenue (Route 25) east of the river, the release stated.

Several streets will be closed starting at 8 a.m.

Monday to allow for the staging of parade units.

Those streets are Walnut Street from South Fourth Street to South Seventh Street, and South Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets

from Main Street to Illinois Street, according to the release.

Parking will be prohibited on the Main Street Bridge from 8 to 11 a.m., the release stated.

Motorists traveling across the Fox River are encouraged to use either the Illinois Street Bridge or the Red Gate Bridge. Police and emergency management personnel will provide traffic assistance along the parade route, according to the release.

The parade will begin at 6th Street traveling east on Main Street to Riverside Avenue, where it will turn north and continue to the Freedom Walk north of the St. Charles Police Department at 211 N. Riverside Ave. in St. Charles. A brief ceremony will be held there, the release stated.

BATAVIA – Hall Quarry Beach will open for the season on Saturday. Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry owned by the Batavia Park District. It is at 400 S. Water St. and features a sand bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet that includes islands, slides and a diving area.

Hours are noon to 6 p.m. every day, with extended hours until 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 16.

Keeping the skies safe Air travel in the United States is blessedly, astonishingly safe. The airlines transport two million passengers a day, yet fatal accidents are exceedingly rare.

From 2004 through 2013, only 133 people died on board scheduled commercial flights that crashed. This record is reason for celebration, but not complacency; it is in large part a tribute to the excellent work of the air-traffic controllers and regulators who work for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Yet there is a growing consensus the FAA could do as well, or even better, at less cost in both dollars and political hassle. Its budget comes from taxes, user fees and appropriations that are subject to constant interest-group lobbying, partisan feuding and, more recently, the blunt force of sequestration. The FAA got caught up in a partial shutdown when one of its perennial short-term reauthorization bills lapsed in August 2011; in April 2013 the agency had to furlough 10 percent of air- traffic controllers because of sequestration-related funding disruptions. Meanwhile, delays and cost overruns plague its long-term technological upgrade, known as NextGen. Everyone involved in the aviation industry – from airlines to unions – wants more stability.

With an FAA reauthorization bill due in September, Bill Shuster, R-Pa., the House transportation committee chairman, said the time is ripe for a structural overhaul. The centerpiece would be to spin air traffic control off to a new corporate entity outside of the FAA, leaving the agency to concentrate on its safety-regulation role. Other countries, such as Canada and Britain, have taken that approach, the main virtue of which would be to get politics out of the funding of air traffic control operations and the NextGen upgrade. The proposed corporation would instead levy charges on the system’s various users according to presumably more objective, business-like criteria.

FAA reform is a worthy and, possibly, attainable goal. Actually achieving better governance, however, will depend on getting the details right.

My kind of town, Geneva is – kind of, mostly Even though I spent time growing up in a co-op overlooking Lake Shore Drive and playing pick-up ball in Lincoln Park, today I brag my hometown is Geneva, Illinois. Our family moved here in 1993, all the way from Gray Street in St. Charles, where my wife and I first harbored 36 years ago.

If you read my students’ hometown poems, featured here two weeks ago, you’ll know soon enough that it’s not false humility to admit theirs are better than mine. However, I’ve toyed with this poem for so long, I just want to get it off my desk; every time I revisit it, I spend two hours changing a line, then another two changing it back.

Therefore, with apologies to Carl Sandburg’s masterpiece, “Chicago,” I offer a few lines heralding the town I unapologetically love most. That doesn’t mean I won’t criticize Geneva; if I didn’t adore it, I wouldn’t care what it did. Loving people, as everyone knows who has a spouse and best friends, means admiring their best qualities while politely encouraging them to improve on their worst.

So, without further excuses or explanations, here’s my poem of – and for:

‘Keep calm and hang banners’ Batavia wins sectional to complete triple crown

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – Not too many teams can say they have won a county, conference and sectional boys track meet. On Thursday, Batavia joined that rarefied air.

A loud cheer came about as Batavia was announced as the Class 3A West Aurora Sectional champion. The Bulldogs scored 76 points, edging both St. Charles East (61) and West Aurora (56).

As many athletes at the sectional fell in pain or celebration from qualifying for next week’s state meet in Charleston, that wasn’t completely the key for the now “Triple Crown” winning Bulldogs.

“We nickle-and-dimed our way in just about everything,” coach Dennis Piron said.

“Third place here, fifth place there, it was all about scoring points for us. The guys have worked so hard and deserve to

be where they are.”

Sure, Peyton Piron barely could get through an interview as he was out of breath after winning the 300 meter hurdles. But this was a ‘team’ day for Batavia.

Peyton Piron knew it was just as important for say, teammate and fellow competitor in the 300 hurdles, Will Akers, to finish fourth in the same race as it was for him to win his race.

“We’ve had one goal and one common theme in mind all season,” Peyton Piron said.

“That’s ‘Keep calm and hang banners.’ We had so many guys get us such meaningful points today. It hurts at first when guys just miss state times, but it’s because they’re moving up. It hurts at first, but once you realize how much it means, it’s so huge for us.

“We’ve worked so hard since the beginning of the season. Coach is the biggest motivator and best coach I’ve been

around. He had a large part to do with this, as well.”

Akers’ fourth place finish was just as big as Piron sneaking a point in the 100 hurdles.

The senior, and now back-toback conference and sectional champion in the 300 hurdles, finished sixth to earn Batavia another point.

The continued story goes on for the Bulldogs as sophomore Jay Hunt qualified for state in the high jump. He finished third overall, but a 6 foot, 5 inch jump was just enough to send him to the state meet.

“Just work for those points,” Hunt said. “That’s what we have been talking about for as long as I can remember. Everyone looks at winning an event as the big success, but as long as we continue to scratch out points, that’s what matters most for us.”

Batavia sent five total events to the state meet, which

was less than a good amount of the 16 schools in attendance.

Dennis Piron knew how hard the kids worked would pay off, despite the number of event wins.

“We just had to hope that our collective effort was good enough,” Piron said. “You see some of the schools (like Schuamburg) who came out and won four events in a row.

We don’t have that, but we placed in so many things that it gave us a very good chance at the end.”

St. Charles East won the 4x800 relay, while senior Kyle Decker claimed an individual title in the 110 hurdles.

On a night when beating the fully automated timing state qualifying standard was of equal importance, Geneva’s 4x100 erupted upon besting the standard by .04 seconds.

Batavia’s Matt Fabian and Tyler Mansfield were among the five competitors in the pole vault to qualify for state.

A

n unexpected conversation is likely to occur as Joe Laudont walks through the Kaneland hallways.

With an affable personality and a willingness to engage in conversations with different people, Laudont is easy to approach.

The character traits that make him an easy student to share a passing conversa-

tion with or quick to crack a joke during the school day are part of the skill set the Knights junior catcher has used to manage a starting pitching staff with a combined 14-5 record.

All three starters have sub 2.00 ERAs, and Laudont said he knows what makes each pitcher tick.

As No. 4 seed Kaneland hosts No. 5 seed Wheaton Academy on Monday in a quarterfinal of a loaded Class 3A Hampshire Regional,

Laudont will have spray charts for Wheaton Academy hitters and a scouting report on its baserunners.

The Knights beat the Warriors this season and were 4-2 against opponents in their regional. All are confidence builders and valuable assets, but it’s the relationships Laudont has built with Kaneland pitchers he will rely on most.

“When the pressure is high, I want the pitchers to relax,” Laudont said. “I’ve

gotten to know them and think I know what makes each one excited. I know what can make them laugh. I know what to say. What kind of joke that can keep a conversation light. Even before the game, warming up, we will have a conversation that helps them keep their mind from getting too wrapped up in the outcome of the game and helps them stay focused on pitching.”

BEST AREA BET TO WIN A REGIONAL: St. Charles North at the Class 4A Schaumburg Regional. North comes into the playoffs as hot as any team in the state. The North Stars have won 16 straight games, and won the outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division title. One key for North come playoff time will be its pitching.

The hitting and defense have been strong for most of the season. Cory Wright’s performance will be key, as it has been all season on the mound and in the batter’s box. North will play the York/Streamwood regional quarterfinal winner, followed by Bartlett or Schaumburg.

BEST FIRST-ROUND MATCHUP: Batavia vs. South Elgin at 4A Wheaton North Regional. One would think Batavia would throw ace Evan Acosta in this one against a strong South Elgin team. South Elgin’s record is much better than the Bulldogs’, but if Batavia hits the way it is capable, it can contend with just about any team given the depth of the pitching staff.

BEST POTENTIAL REGIONAL FINAL: St. Charles East vs. Conant at 4A Addison Trail Regional. East had an up-and-down regular season, but mostly a positive one. A potential matchup with Conant could be an interesting one if both teams advance from regional semifinal games. The Saints get the winner of a quarterfinal game between Lake Park and Addison Trail, while Conant squares off with Glenbard West. The one barometer we have to measure these two teams is both played Geneva this year, with Conant losing by a run, 8-7, and East losing two of three to the Vikings in UEC River play.

POTENTIAL DARKHORSE: Batavia at 4A Wheaton North Regional. Batavia received the No. 10 seed in the St. Charles East Sectional, but it is not indicative of how dangerous of a team it can be. With the pitching staff including Acosta and Glenn Albanese, the Bulldogs have the potential to shut down any team. Their hitting has been streaky, but if they can get by South Elgin in that semifinal game, Batavia has a chance to make a run deep into the playoffs.

Although earning the No. 1 seed is an honor, Rockets coach Kyle Nelson knows it will be a difficult road for whatever team advances.

“I think our regional has five No. 1 seeds,” Nelson said. “If not the toughest, it has to be one of the deepest 3A regionals in the state, especially with all the quality pitching. There’s no off days in there. You’re going to have to play well every day to advance.”

Entering Tuesday, the five teams – which also include Kaneland, host Hampshire, Sycamore and Wheaton Academy – combined for 104 wins, which math would show adds up to an average of more than 20 wins a team.

Kaneland, which will be involved in the regional quarterfinal game against

Wheaton Academy on Monday, beat BC last week and could have just as easily been awarded a No. 1 seed in many other brackets. BC will play the winner of that game, as No. 2 Hampshire and No. 3 Sycamore battle on the other side of the regional.

North clinches River Division After a win Monday against Glenbard East, St. Charles North officially clinched the outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division title. Behind North’s recent surge, that has been a foregone conclusion to some for much of the season. The North Stars completed a sweep of Elgin on Thursday for their 16th straight win, all against conference opponents.

North finished the season with a 23-3 record in the UEC River this year.

Coach Todd Genke has stressed that it is a big step for his team to win the conference title, but doesn’t hand them

anything come postseason time.

“Everyone is the same come playoff time,” Genke said. “It’s a good thing to be on top of the conference and we want the kids to enjoy that. But once we get into the playoffs, we have to continue to play hard and play our best baseball. I think our kids know that and have gained the experience this year to continue to do so.”

North earned the top seed of the Class 4A St. Charles East Sectional and will play the winner of a quarterfinal game between Streamwood and York at the Schaumburg Regional, followed by a matchup with either Schuamburg or Bartlett.

North swept Streamwood in a midseason, three-game series, outscoring the Sabres, 44-1. The North Stars also played Bartlett early in the year in a UEC crossover game, winning, 14-9.

HITTING REWIND Two Marmion pitchers threw a combined no-hitter Tuesday at IMSA. The game went five innings as the Cadets scored 16 runs to enforce the run-rule.

Jake Esp and Will Matthews combined to strike out 11 batters and walked just one. One IMSA batter reached on an error, but it was smooth sailing for the two for most of the afternoon. Esp also drove in three runs for the Cadets in the win.

COMING ATTRACTION The time has come. All teams will begin what they hope will be a seven-game win streak leading to a state championship. The Class 1A and 2A state tournaments will take place at Dozer Park in Peoria, while Class 3A and 4A will be played at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field.

Saints pitcher Steven Podany returned from a nearly two-weeks absence because of stitches in a finger to get the save in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

The junior came in with the tying run at home plate with one out in the sixth inning and faced the minimum five hitters the rest of the way, recording two strikeouts looking, a fielder’s choice and two groundouts.

“I was extremely happy,” Podany said of his return to the mound. “I thought we were going to turn two (on the fielder’s choice to the first hitter he faced). I thought we played good defense.”

The same could not be said for Larkin, which committed four errors – three by second baseman Tanner Gardon – in the first two innings, leading to three of East’s first four runs.

Russell Phelps scored the only earned run in East’s first two frames with a fielder’s choice on a ground ball to first in which teammate Jacob Clodi dove safely across home plate when the play came to the plate.

Corbin Marucco, who had two of the Saints’ three hits on the day, had moved Clodi to third with a single after Clodi led off the second inning with

a walk.

Marucco added an RBI single in a two-run fifth for East (21-9, 17-7 UEC River). He said he was happy to contribute after struggling some at the plate.

“I got some extra work …

After that first hit, I felt real confident,” Marucco said. “I grounded out, but then I was able to do the job and drive a run in.”

Podany took over on the mound for Mick Vyzral, who pitched 5⅓ innings. Vyzral breezed through the first three inning, allowing only one hit and facing the minimum nine hitters, thanks to Saints catch-

Vyzral took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning, but gave up singles to four of the first five Royal hitters to tighten the score to 6-3. Enter Podany.

“I thought both our pitchers did well,” Asquini said. “(Vyzral) went into the sixth, but started leaving the ball up some, and Stevie came in and closed it out.”

Asquini feels the Saints are playing well and poised to “make a deep playoff run.”

The Saints visit Larkin (1021, 7-17) today to close the series.

Perhaps the most outward difference isn’t even in Nussbaum’s hands, but instead those of the league’s players.

The official MWL ball that sported the signature of predecessor George Spelius since 1987 now features Nussbaum’s John Hancock.

“I love it. It’s pretty cool,” Nussbaum said. “Couldn’t hit it, but now to see my name on it, it’s pretty neat. I’m pretty lucky.”

Nussbaum, 62, actually stung his share of baseballs as Notre Dame’s center fielder in the early 1970s, leading the Irish with a .333 batting average as a junior in 1973. A year later, he earned an English degree from Notre Dame. In 1977, he graduated from its law school.

So began a career that’s been dedicated to hardball in some shape or form ever since.

Born outside Pittsburgh, Nussbaum married and settled in South Bend, Indiana.

He joined the MWL in 1993 – his first meeting as league

counsel took place at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark – and has been partner with a South Bend law firm since 1996.

“I do it all now,” he said.

Although the MWL office officially shifted from Spelius’ home of Beloit, Wisconsin, to South Bend this season, Nussbaum maintains an operation in Beloit.

It includes administrator Holly Voss and the 81-year-old Spelius, who serves as head of umpire development.

In Geneva for last week’s “Out to the Ballgame II” speaker’s series featuring D’backs chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, Nussbaum fondly recalled the Cougars’ growth. The club, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, relocated from Wausau, Wisconsin, before the 1991 season and has shined through affiliations with the Baltimore Orioles, Florida (now Miami) Marlins, Oakland A’s, Kansas City Royals, Cubs and D’backs.

“This is one of the primary franchises not only in our league, but in all of minor league baseball,” Nussbaum said. “They do a great job here. I think with this new ownership group, there’s a lot of excitement. I’m really anxious to see how far they go.”

A few months before Nussbaum’s appointment to president, the Cougars agreed to a two-year player-development contract with Arizona. Kane County and South Bend essentially swapped affiliates, with the Cubs vacating Geneva and the D’backs moving in.

“The Cubs do well wherever they go. They’re a pretty hot brand right now,” Nussbaum said. “But … you know, the Diamondbacks were in South Bend for a long time (from 1998 to 2014), and they were a great partner. I think you’ll find they’ll be a great partner here.”

The Knights’ regional, which also features top seed Burlington Central, the host Whip-Purs and Sycamore, is bound to be filled with high stakes and pressure-packed situations. Entering Tuesday, the teams had combined to win 104 games this spring.

“We know it’s a tough road to a regional title,” said Laudont, who is like a psychologist, stand-up comedian, best buddy and chief strategist all rolled into one for the Knights’ pitching staff.

“But we’ve been gearing up for the playoffs all season.

It’s why we went down to Georgia (for a spring break trip), it’s why our pitchers work out together all offseason; we know what is at stake once the postseason starts. We need to be on top of our games.”

Although Kaneland has yet to set its postseason rotation, Knights coach Brian Aversa wants Colton Fellows (5-2, 1.34 ERA), Matt O’Sullivan (6-2, 0.91 ERA) and Steve Limbrunner (3-1, 1.87 ERA) to be prepared to pitch at a moment’s notice. Playoff adrenaline can mentally and physically fatigue a pitcher.

Which is why Aversa will rely on Laudont to keep pitchers relaxed and focused. All season Aversa has reminded pitchers that even though they initiate the game’s action and can be the center of attention when things go right or wrong,

they have responsibilities like every other position player.

Without a dominant No. 1 starter, the Knights have flexibility in their rotation and feel comfortable mixing and matching starting pitchers to exploit the weaknesses of their opponent’s lineup.

With three solid pitchers, Aversa said the Knights’ depth is an asset that could be a playoff advantage.

“Pitchers have got to understand they are just one of nine players on the field,” Aversa said. “We want them to let the defense help them out. Throw pitches that attack the lineup and pitch to contact. If they take the mentality, they will go out and strike out the entire lineup, that’s a very tall task.

But that’s part of the playoffs, dealing with the added pressure.”

Even a mound visit to talk strategy is something Laudont has to correctly manage.

Each pitcher will listen differently and he wants the message to resonate. Fellows’ serious personality could lead to a straightforward, business-like discussion. A chat with O’Sullivan might yield a joke or two. Because Laudont has played with most of his teammates since fourth grade, he’s comfortable he’ll find the right words to say.

“It’s up to me to get to know the pitchers on our staff well,” Laudont said. “I think I’ve done that and it’s helped us have a real good chemistry when working together.”

Cougars right-hander Touki Toussaint added a trademark sign next to his name on Twitter shortly after the 2014 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft.

The 18-year-old of Haitian descent and Floridian upbringing bet on himself long before the parent Arizona Diamondbacks invested a first-round pick in him. This particular gesture simply was the ultra-positive prospect doing his thing.

“I’m just loose, get to know everyone and go out from that,” Toussaint said.

Set to make his Fifth Third Bank Ballpark debut against Wisconsin tonight, Toussaint joined the Cougars from extended spring training last weekend. He earned a no-decision Sunday against the Timber Rattlers, spacing four hits, two runs – one earned – six strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

“It’s a fun transition,” Toussaint said. “It’s different coming from extended, going to the park, there and back, every day. Here, you have more free time from coming home, sleeping, waking up.”

Toussaint, drafted from Florida’s Coral Springs Christian Academy, already has embraced fans, even though he’s yet to pitch before his new home crowd.

Take it from Cougars bus driver Kevin Hartseil, who, like many, developed a rapport with Toussaint almost instantly.

“He’s outstanding. He’s very pleasant to be around,” Hartseil said. “A couple people have come up to the bus when he’s already on the bus and asked for his autograph. So I go in, ask him, he comes right back out. So he’s very nice.”

Toussaint observed his parents during a nomadic upbringing and credits their influence for his upbeat demeanor. He lived apart from his father, a former Haitian presidential candidate, after Toussaint and his mother moved to Florida when the marriage didn’t work out.

I have always wanted to start a family and raise children with my fiance, but I have a big problem. I am an alcoholic and have been struggling with this issue for a few years. I don’t know the effect this could have on my baby, but I know it isn’t good. My fiance also drinks a lot, and our home situation isn’t the greatest for a child.

If you plan to have this baby, it’s important that you find a gynecologist and quit drinking IMMEDIATELY! Dear Reader: It sounds too good to be true, but research has found that certain compounds in chocolate, called cocoa flavonols, may protect brain function.

In one recent study, researchers tested the effects of cocoa flavonols in 90 healthy 61- to 85-year-olds with good memory and thinking skills. Participants drank a special brew containing either a low (48 milligrams, or mg), medium (520 mg) or high (993 mg) amount of cocoa flavonols each day.

After eight weeks, the study participants took tests that measured attention, executive function and memory. People who had consumed medium and high amounts of cocoa flavonols every day made significant improvements on these tests, compared to people who consumed low amounts.

A previous study by these researchers was published in 2012. That study showed that daily consumption of cocoa flavonols was associated with improved thinking skills in older adults with a problem known as mild cognitive impairment.

Flavonols are a type of plant nutrient found in many foods and

Flavonols in cocoa have been studied for many years. They have been shown to help lower blood pressure, improve insulin resistance (a precursor to diabetes), improve blood flow to the brain and heart, prevent blood clots and fight cell damage.

How cocoa flavonols might boost thinking skills has not been directly studied in humans. In lab and animal studies, flavonols have been found to help brain cells “talk” to one another. They also protect brain cells from toxins and inflammation.

The amount of cocoa flavonols in chocolate varies widely from one chocolate to another. As a rule of thumb, dark chocolate has more flavonols than milk chocolate. Even so, the amount of flavonols in about three ounces of dark chocolate can range from 100 to 2,000 mg.

The forms of chocolate that we generally consume – chocolate candies and chocolate pastry – generally are high in both calories and cholesterol-raising saturated fats. So, I’m surely not advising you to improve your heart health by eating a box of chocolates (or a big slice of chocolate cake) each day.

The chocolate confection industry is working on new forms of chocolate candies that are richer in flavonols and lower in calories and saturated fat. And there are plenty of low-calorie chocolate recipes on the Internet.

The best way to get cocoa flavonols is through dark cocoa powder mixed with a very little bit of added sugar and low-fat milk. Look for cocoa powder that is as natural as possible. (Avoid so-called “Dutch processed” cocoa powder, as Dutch processing reduces the amount of flavonols.)

For chocoholics like me, the research news on chocolate over the past decade has been good. Still, you’ve got to be careful about how you partake in its benefits.
