County hit by large hail in storms Minor damage reported to cars, buildings in area

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Large hail, with some hailstones reportedly as large as tennis balls, fell Tuesday night in portions of the Kane County area. And although there were no reports of tornados, there were reports of damage to vehicles and structures in the area.

In Elburn, tornado sirens were sounded minutes before the storm. Village President Dave Anderson said it was because of the hail and trying to keep people safe.

He said Tri-Com Central Dispatch keeps local police departments up to date on such issues, and then it’s up to local police to decide whether to sound the alarm. Anderson said it wasn’t necessary for a tornado to be seen before sounding the alarm.

“It was done right, that they set them off,” Anderson said. “There was damaging hail.”

Some of the largest hail in the area was reported in Sugar Grove, and some in Elburn reported seeing very large hail. Sirens did not sound in Sugar Grove.

Elburn-based storm chaser Brad Hruza said he spent much of the night in the Maple Park area, but he arrived home and encountered the hail. He said he saw some golfball-sized hail. He questioned the village’s sounding of the sirens, calling it unnecessary.

He said neighbors were asking him why the sirens were going off.

She said the hail punched holes through sky lights at a barn, minutes after she had brought horses in from the storm. of the Elburn Village Board who works closely with the Elburn Community Response Team, said the village’s policy calls for the alarm to be sounded any time winds exceed 70 mph or there is golf ball-sized hail.

“Those events can do as much damage as a tornado,” Gualdoni said.

St. Charles-based storm chaser Lorraine Mahoney said hail was the main threat of the storm, along with high wind. She said “there was little tornado threat, due to the lack of sufficient low-level

In Sugar Grove, Village President Sean Michels said officials were at a Village Board meeting when the storm hit. He said they heard the hail as it pelted the municipal center, and he said some board members had dents in the hoods of their vehicles. He said he didn’t hear of extensive damage. Anderson said he heard of reports of vehicle damage in Elburn.

Emma Florian, who farms at Forest Gate Farm in Blackberry Township, said she and her husband had brought

their horses into a barn after noticing storm clouds. Minutes later, she said the hail started falling and “it sounded like rocks hitting the roof.”

“Gradually, the hail got bigger and bigger until it seemed like golf balls were coming out of the sky,” Florian said. “Some were even bigger.”

She said there was hail damage to cars at the farm, and the hail punched holes through sky lights at the barn.

“I’ve seen hail before, but I’ve never seen hail this big or this violent,” she said.

Quarter-sized hail fell at Kuipers Family Farm in Maple Park. On the farm’s Facebook page, there were photos posted, along with a note that the hail and high winds “could be bad news for the apple crop.”

Wade Kuipers, the president and owner, said that sentiment changed after he was able to check out the area on Wednesday.

“I think everything is going to be fine,” Kuipers said.

The concern, he said, was that the hail could have knocked buds off some plants, affecting the pollination process. Also, he said the farm had done some spraying to protect plants from a feared disease. He said that hail is feared by apple growers as a real threat. He said it would be like a person standing outside and getting hit by sharp stones. At first, he feared the worst. But after a closer look, he isn’t nearly so worried.

“We’re all good,” he said.

OVERLOOKED CAUSE OF DRY EYES While there are a number of causes of dry eyes, perhaps the most under-recognized is “blepharitis.” This condition involves inflammation and clogging of the meibomian glands. Located in the eyelids, these glands are responsible for secreting the oily liquid that forms a layer in the tear film that helps prevent the rapid evaporation of the tears. One sign of blepharitis is crusting along the lash line, which can be treated with a diluted soap solution or special lid cleaning products. The application of a warm, wet compress for five minutes or so also helps improve the flow of oil from the glands. If necessary, prescription anti-inflammation eye drops can also be used.

Message in a lunchbox prompts search Mom, son seek former resident of Elm Avenue

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A 1960s-era lunchbox has propelled an East Coast woman and her 9-year-old son on a search for a man who grew up on Elm Avenue in Geneva.

“Hopefully the person’s still alive,” Laurie Sykes said.

The Levittown, New York, woman and her son, Connor, are looking for the David Fisher who once lived at 431 Elm Ave. and owned a Huckleberry Hound/Quick Draw McGraw lunchbox.

Produced in 1961, the container now belongs to Sykes, who has been collecting metal lunchboxes for about 35 years.

Connor has been taking a different one to school each day since January, when he decided he was bored with his lunchbox, Sykes said. She noted his classmates get a kick out of it.

“They become like little pieces of history,” she said.

“Every day, it becomes like a little adventure, ‘Which one will he bring?’ ” Connor picked the Huckleberry Hound/Quick Draw McGraw lunchbox on May 12 and came home wanting to track down its former owner, whose name and address were

“The fact that a name was in it prompted his curiosity,” she said. “As far as he was concerned, everything he needed to know was right there.”

They soon began collecting details of the owner’s life.

Based on the lunchbox’s production year and the handwriting on its label, Sykes said, they placed Fisher’s birthdate between 1952 and 1956.

She and her son also deduced that Fisher likely attended Harrison Street Elementary School based on his street address and the schools

that existed at that time, she said.

But that’s about the extent of their progress, Sykes said.

“We found 640 David Fishers born in Illinois during that timeframe,” she said. “So we are now at a bit of a standstill.”

Although Sykes used to keep a notebook of where she got each lunchbox and how much she paid for it, she said she can’t find it. She buys most of her collection off eBay or at flea markets, she said.

Sykes recognizes that the chances of meeting Fisher might be slim, but she said her son would love to talk with him and learn what it was like when Fisher was his age. He also would welcome a letter or an email, she said.

“Everyone is really excited to find the answer to this mystery,” she said.

Inviting environment awaits at Early Light Cafe Early Light Cafe is one of my favorite places in Geneva.

If you have ever ridden your bike or walked along the Fox River and seen inspirational messages written in sidewalk chalk, smelled fresh egg sandwiches or stopped for ice cream along the way, you can probably thank Dawn Phillips and Eileen Kanute, owners of Early Light Cafe.

Early Light is at 11 E. State St. in Geneva (on the ground floor of Mill Race Cyclery).

I was able to sit down and talk to Phillips one afternoon, and she told me the story of this little cafe.

Phillips and Kanute have owned and operated the outdoor cafe with their families since May 2013. An avid cook and baker, Phillips said she had always wanted to own a cafe.

Close friends as well as business partners, she and

With the school’s current enrollment at 200 students for the 2014-15 school year, Emeh said in the letter the school is down by 175 students, a loss of roughly $700,000.

“The trend is unsustainable,” Emeh wrote. “And, it would be a lack of fiduciary responsibility on my part to engage a loan in the name of the parish, to pay teachers for empty classrooms.”

To deal with the declining enrollment, Emeh wrote that starting this fall, the school will have one classroom of each grade.

“We will continue to accept student registrations until each class limit is reached, after which students wishing to register will be placed on a waiting list,” he wrote. “When enough student registrations for a second classroom have been received, a second class for that grade will be activated, and a teacher will be rehired.”

GENEVA – Declining enrollment is forcing St. Peter School in Geneva to make changes in its program.

The private school at 1881 Kaneville Road, Geneva, is part of St. Peter Catholic Church. In a letter to school parents on May 9, the Rev. Martins Emeh of St. Peter Catholic Church stated the school’s enrollment for the next school year stands at 200 children.

“What this means is that, in most grades, we do not have enough students to fill one classroom,” Emeh wrote.

“At 29, eighth grade is the grade with the highest number of registered students.”

The church budgeted for 375 students for the next school year, Emeh wrote.

“The budget actually contains a deficit of $191,626,” he wrote. “This is in spite of the annual parish subsidy, which is estimated at $328,780 for the coming year.”

Because of the situation, Emeh said in the letter that he has asked St. Peter School Principal Marie Neis to resign effective June 4, the last day of the current school year before summer break.

Assistant Principal Larry Johnson will serve as acting principal during the transition, Emeh wrote.

Church and school officials could not be reached for comment.

Carroll previously served on the North Aurora Plan Commission for five years.

North Aurora Village President Dale Berman on Monday appointed Carroll to fill the vacancy caused by the recent resignation of Ryan Lambert.

Lambert resigned from the Village Board after he was named the new fire chief, following the retirement of Steve Miller.

Lambert was elected to the Village Board in April 2011, and Carroll will fill the remainder of his term, which expires in April 2015.

“He’s done a good job on the plan commission,” Berman said. “He’s a good think-

er and is dedicated to North Aurora. He’s just the kind of guy we need.”

Carroll, 40, who is a past president of the North Aurora Lions Club, owns a law practice in Batavia. Carroll said he is looking forward to the opportunity.

“I am hoping North Aurora will continue to grow and continue to grow wisely, and I want to help do that,” he said.

Berman will now have to appoint someone to fill the vacancy on the North Aurora Plan Commission.

Berman invited those interested in the post to submit an application. Applications can be sent to his attention at North Aurora Village Hall, 25 E. State St. Lambert took over the reins of the fire department May 1 after getting the nod from the North Aurora Fire Board of Trustees.

Before he was promoted, Lambert was the department’s fire marshal.

Lambert said he resigned from the board because being fire chief will demand his full attention.

‘A great high school experience’ Geneva graduate doesn’t allow cerebral palsy to limit him

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Like many Geneva High School graduating seniors, George Keenan has a college lined up, Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, a private liberal arts college of 2,800 students.

That might not be big news for the average 18-year-old, but Keenan was born with cerebral palsy.

“They have a program called Cutting Edge which is for ‘differently abled’ people,” Keenan said. “I was trying to get in. And I was overqualified.”

Instead, he was accepted to the school’s regular education program, he said.

“They have an amazing program for people who are ‘differently abled,’ ” his mother, Teresa Keenan, said.

“Not just the Cutting Edge program, but they are really accommodating at Edgewood College. This is a perfect spot for him.”

The Kane County Chronicle this week is highlighting local high school graduating seniors. The Geneva High School graduation is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the high school.

Keenan said he wants to study computer science or graphic design or art in college.

In high school, Keenan said he refused to be defined by his physical limitations.

He has a mobility bike that he rides nearly every day, pedaling from Geneva to Wheaton or Bartlett or Carpentersville, frequently covering 25 to 35 miles at a time, said his father, Terrance Keenan.

“The coaches … encouraged me to come out for the team sophomore year,” Keenan said. “And I did it sophomore through senior year. If I could go back, I would do it all four years.”

For his Eagle Scout project, Keenan and other Scouts supervised the burning of some 200 retired American flags, one at a time, over a period of several hours.

“He has really made a lot of great strides for himself,” his mother said. “He created his own opportunities, and he is a hard worker. He had a great high school experience.”

Keenan’s personality and perseverance did not go unnoticed by his teachers, such as math teacher Ryan Estabrook, who noted his accomplishments and “his great positive attitude.”

“I have found George to be determined, resourceful and a genuinely optimistic person,” Estabrook wrote in a letter of recommendation for Edgewood College.

“He thrived in a class that required strong study skills and academic prowess. His determination, patience and perseverance were among his greatest assets in that class.”

Brandon Cantwell, a 2013 Geneva High School graduate featured for his music-making prowess, reports that he is continuing his jazz studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“I’m still a jazz major,” Cantwell, 19, of Geneva said. “I’m just about to wrap up my freshman year.”

The Kane C o u n t y Chronicle is looking back Brandon at recent high Cantwell school graduates who have been featured in its annual series over the past few years.

Cantwell was profiled in 2013.

While continuing his jazz studies, Cantwell also is playing in several ensembles both on and off campus.

“I’m playing in outside groups. I’m working with this one kid, a rapper, who is also a freshman, so I’ve been playing more hip hop,” Cantwell said. “It’s a new thing for me, playing more electric bass. I’m trying to become more versatile as a bass player.”

When he comes home for the summer, Cantwell said he plans to keep playing with other jazz groups to continue honing his craft.

Cantwell said he also will reconnect with a local indie band, Fargo, made up of other Geneva High School grads.

“We actually have our next gig booked May 23 in Madison,” Cantwell said.

“We’ll be playing at the Majestic Theater with a pretty well-known band called Atlas Sound. That will be a pretty big one for us.”

Steve attended Fairmont West High School in Kettering, Ohio, was a graduate of Princeton University and attained an MBA from Wharton Business School. He had a successful business career in the United States and Asia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Audrey. Steve

is survived by his loving wife, Vevia; daughter Samantha and her husband Dustin; and brother David and his wife Ana along with their children Derek and Keith.

• Michael G. Ortiz, 57, of the 6N400 block of Barton Drive, St. Charles, was charged Friday, May 16, with driving under the influence

of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device. His pickup truck was reportedly blocking the flow of traffic on Red Gate Road near Randall Road in St. Charles Township.

Ready to dive into summer? Visit STC pools

With the opening days for Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Swanson Pool just around the corner (Saturday and May 31, respectively), the St. Charles Park District is unveiling some hot new pricing options that won’t have you diving deep into your wallet to make some waves this summer.

Perhaps it’s only fitting that the littlest swimmers can take advantage of a really big deal. For the first time this year, children younger than 3 will be admitted to both aquatic facilities free of charge. Ideal for families with toddlers too young to use more advanced amenities, the new “under 3 is free” pricing lets youngsters dip their toes in the splash park to their hearts’ content.

Another new feature available for the first time this year is the half-season pass. Valid from July 12 through the end of the season on Sept. 1, this pricing option should appeal to those guests who wait to

take the plunge until later in the season when the weather gets really, really hot or for those whose end-of-schoolyear travel plans keep them away from the pool in the early days of summer.

Half-season passes are available for individuals as well as two-, three-, and four-person household units.

And for those who aren’t certain about making any kind of season pass commitment, the cost-effective, 10-visit pass is a great way for infrequent users to test the waters.

Adjacent communities can also get in the swim of things with the favorable prices offered through the St. Charles Park District’s “Neighbor Rates” program. Available to residents of Campton Hills, LaFox, Wasco, West Chicago, Geneva, South Elgin, Wayne, Elburn, Batavia, Elgin and Maple Park, the “Neighbor Rate” is offered for both fulland half-season passes.

And to be sure the summer season goes off swimmingly, new child safety restrictions are also in place this year at both aquatic facilities, said Steve Muenz, assistant superintendent of recreation.

The opening days for Otter Cove Aquatic Park, 3615 Campton Hills Road, and Swanson Pool, 8 North Ave., both in St. Charles, are Saturday and May 31, respectively.

Last year, in keeping with manufacturer’s code specifications, the park district instituted a 48-inch minimum height requirement for children to access aquatic amenities such as the drop

and tube slides. This year, that requirement has changed.

“There were a lot of kids, whether they were 5 or 6 years old, who didn’t hit that 48-inch mark,” Muenz said.

“So, we went back to the slide

manufacturers and asked if there couldn’t be some wiggle room.”

The solution was to drop the height requirement to between 42 inches and 48 inches, so long as the child was wearing a Coast Guard-certified life vest, which the park district provides free. The vests are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents are encouraged to provide their own vests, so long as they are Coast Guard-certified.

“That actually works out better, because the child will have already been properly fitted for the vest and Mom and Dad know how to correctly put it on their child,” Muenz said.

More questions remain over rules

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Lansal Inc., known as Hot Mama’s Foods, is voluntarily recalling about 14,860 pounds of hummus and dip products for concern of a possible listeria contamination. Listeria can cause serious – and sometimes

15 fatal – infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. No illnesses had been reported as of Wednesday morning, according to a release from the health department.

The distributors have been contacted to remove all affected products from sale. Consumers

GENEVA – Just as employers are able to regulate employee behavior – such as restricting certain clothing – Kane County is within its rights to implement a concealed-carry policy for its personnel, Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Lulves told the Human Services Committee on Wednesday.

Balancing liability issues and employees’ constitutional rights were among the committee’s concerns when it considered the policy in April.

Lulves said the state’s attorney’s office has drafted a concealed-carry policy that reflects a “risk management position.”

The proposed policy would prohibit county employees from carrying a concealed firearm in any county building or vehicle.

Employees would also be prohibited from carrying a concealed firearm in their private vehicle while in the course of their employment with the county.

It would not apply to employees authorized to carry a concealed firearm by any other state statute.

“Do you foresee us getting challenged?” Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, asked.

Lulves said that would be speculation on his part, but the state’s attorney’s office believes the proposed restrictions are “reasonable.”

“Employers are routinely able to regulate employee behavior,” he said.

Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, asked about employees’ commute to work.

Lulves said an issue could arise if employees were asked to conduct county business with their personal car, and they had concealed firearms in their vehicle.

Davoust said employees in that situation should be able to tell their supervisor about the conflict without repercussions. Castro agreed.

“I think you’d want honesty out of that employee,” she said.

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, asked what the punishment would be for employees in violation of the policy: Suspension? A verbal scolding? Sent home without pay?

The punishment would be up to the director of that county unit, Lulves said.

Board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, asked about the possibility of providing lockers for people to store their firearms while on county property.

Taking responsibility for someone’s weapon would raise legal issues, Lulves said, and financial issues would be tied to the capital and manpower needed for such a service.

At the committee’s direction, Lulves said he would take another, unrelated suggestion under consideration and will work with Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven to address Davoust’s concerns regarding commuting.

OPINIONS A one-size-fits-all graduation speech I (finally) graduate this week! Although I’m not making a speech, I’ve thought of what I would say if I was.

Graduation is the one chance to say something to the entire class. Although each speaker has the opportunity to tailor his or her performance, each seems to sound the same.

I imagine many of the speakers will say something along these lines: “Good afternoon, fellow graduates. Congratulations!

It’s an accomplishment to have made it here today. This is the time of our lives – our chance to cherish being young. It’s amazing to look back and see just how far we’ve come. Our class has been involved in every aspect of our school ever since we came to East.

“These four years have certainly been a roller coaster ride. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were scared little freshmen wandering around, trying to find our classrooms. There are moments that will be remembered forever, and others that we wish would go away. We’ve all changed, and I think it was all for the better. Our biggest regrets from high school are not being more involved, getting to know more people.

“What’s truly important is that our time here has more than prepared us for the college or career that we will soon enter. It’s exciting to see what direction we’ll be heading. We are the future, and I can’t wait to see what great things we all will do.

And remember that no matter where you go, you will always be a Saint.

“Let us take a moment to thank all those who have helped us come to this point – our parents and teachers who have supported us

Half-baked school lunch plan THE WASHINGTON POST The federal government spends more than $10 billion a year on the National School Lunch Program, which serves more than 30 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

For that, taxpayers should expect schools not to feed their children junk.

That was the reasonable logic behind a 2010 law requiring stronger federal standards on school lunches – a law that Republicans in the House just voted to undercut. Congressmen can prove they care about healthy school lunches by letting the law phase in, even if it is inconvenient for some in the school food apparatus.

Children can decline part of these balanced meals, but they must take at least one serving of fruits or vegetables.

These standards weren’t developed by fringe food activists or imposed from the first lady’s office. They come from the Agriculture Department and are based on recommendations from experts at the Institute of Medicine. Given that a third of American children and teenagers are overweight or obese, this initiative is common sense.

Various interests and some Republicans, however, are unhappy with the new approach. They point to statistics indicating that fewer students took school lunches in the 2012-13 school year.

Some schools pulled out of the program rather than comply. Many complain

that increases in federal funding haven’t offset added costs. There is concern that students are discarding a lot of (healthy) food. These complaints have resulted in a push for waivers to the law’s requirements if schools claim they are having financial difficulties, a proposal a House subcommittee approved on Tuesday.

Ripping a hole in the law would be a mistake. Most of the cited problems are unsurprising, given that the law is just phasing in, and none of them is an excuse to slacken expectations on this major component of American children’s diets.

The Obama administration has shown a willingness to listen to reasonable requests from schools.

Tweaking the policy when necessary, not undermining it before it has time to work, is the right approach.

Having some physical limitations from cerebral palsy has not stopped him from doing very much, Keenan said, admitting only to lacking fine motor skills. But that’s it.

“I do a lot of interesting stuff,” Keenan said. “I am ‘differently abled.’ ” His advice for others similarly “differently abled” is simple: “Never quit and just keep on going. If there is something challenging for you, you can do it. You might need to find a different way.”

Eric Schelkopf: Tell me about the new studio.

Brittnie Quinn: It’s a new 3,400-square-foot building, right in the middle of the business center. It has two big dance rooms, a lobby space, an eating area, homework area and a dressing room area. The lobby has a viewing area to see the kids dancing. It’s a much larger space than what I have right now. It’s a big upgrade.

Schelkopf: How long have you been dancing?

Quinn: I grew up dancing. My mother owned Palmers School of Dance & Gymnastics in Bloomingdale. From 1980 until 2000, she owned it, and then my uncle bought it in 2000 and still currently owns it.

That’s where I grew up dancing and competing. And then when I was 14, I was accepted into the Chicago Academy for the Arts preparatory high school.

I’ve been dancing for my entire life, since I could walk.

Schelkopf: What kind of satisfaction do you get from dancing?

Quinn: It was the best feeling in the world that I was on stage performing, performing for an audience and hearing people applaud.

As I got older, I wanted to teach. I loved what my mom did. My sister was a teacher; my grandmother was a teacher;

and my grandfather was a teacher.

I loved what they all did and really, really had a passion for it. So, I started assisting and teaching when I was about 15, and then I started actually teaching when I was about 18.

I love taking children who have no experience and making them fantastic dancers. That’s what I love to do and what I do best. Kids come through with absolutely no experience and within a year, they’re very, very good technical dancers.

I’m a very technique-based studio. I teach the correct techniques.

Schelkopf: What are you looking for them to do after they go through your studio?

Quinn: Some kids come to me because they just want to make the dance team at their high school. And that’s something I can always deliver on.

Some kids come to me because they really want to pursue a career in dance. I have a program that fits for everybody.

My mother, Denise Quinn, is starting to run a program at my studio called Dynamic Dancers and it’s for special needs children. So, it’s for children with special needs who still want to dance.

She’s been running a special needs program with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association for about 15 years.

That’s her specialty. That’s what she does.

We also have teen classes for kids who are 13 to 18 years old who don’t have a lot of experience, and we have adult fitness classes. And we have all boys hip hop classes as well.

I like to say that we have something for everybody at the studio.

Schelkopf: Is that what separates you from other dance studios?

Quinn: Absolutely. We have a great variety, and we offer very good technique. You’re always going to get superior technique with us. You’re going to get what you pay for.

And I offer smaller classes. I don’t like to have 30 kids in a classroom. I like to max them out at 15 to 20 kids, so every kid is getting personal attention. That’s very important to me. You learn what each kid needs.

Schelkopf: Do you have any long-term goals?

Quinn: I would love – in the next five to 10 years – to open a second facility.

I also would love to run my own competition someday.

There are so many different competitions out there, and I would like to run one that is very technique based.

And I would just hope to run my studio until I’m too old to walk. I hope to do this forever and ever.

E&S Fish Company quite the catch in St. Charles

n unassuming fish market and cafe located in a strip mall on the outskirts of downtown St. Charles may be one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Well, the secret’s out.

E&S Fish Company, which gets quite busy at dinner (reservations a must), reels in an onslaught of regulars, who swear by its fresh, deeply flavorful and affordable seafood menu.

And did I mention that this seafood charmer is B.Y.O.B.?

A cornucopia of fresh fish awaits in a display case along the market-end of the eatery, where you can purchase raw fish and shellfish to-go or, instead, take a seat at one of the cafe’s few arbitrarily-dispersed, rickety tables (which somehow look as though they’ve taken a beating from the oceanic elements), and have the chef create something truly special out of whatever you choose – Chilean sea bass, scallops, jumbo shrimp, salmon, home-made crab cakes, halibut, grouper or mahi-mahi, to name a few.

A culinary wizard must be in the kitchen, as far as I’m concerned (just look at the E&S Fish Company Facebook page to get a taste for the caliber of creations leaving that kitchen), and the menu – though small – is inventive, creative and constantly changing to best suit the fish being used in each dish.

B.Y.O.B. dinner is served between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Friday and Saturdays. But lunch is a quick and affordable treat – no reservations required.

The lunch menu boasts sushi, shrimp quesadillas, fish tacos, salmon burgers, red seafood chowder and seared tuna salad, among other items.

Seated at a square, wooden table flanked by a wall of windows, the cafe exudes an understated, East Coast, fishing-village vibe. The staff is pleasant, friendly and happy to serve you.

My dining companion and I visited on a Friday for lunch and had the place to ourselves, minus a few regulars stopping in to purchase items from the fish market.

The freshness of each sushi roll was beyond compare. Though I am not normally a fan of eel, the house roll was my favorite.

A slew of seafood sandwiches ($9.95) – served with lettuce, tomato, onion, potato salad, a pickle and choice of garlic or wasabi mayonnaise, tartar sauce or Dijon mustard – lined the menu, along with salads, soups and a “fish entree” ($14.95), that allows diners to choose a fresh fish selection from the display case, which will then be cooked and served with sautéed fresh vegetables, a choice of sweet potato puree or white rice and mango salsa.

I ordered the Salmon on Kaiser Roll with garlic mayo, and my dining companion opted for the Shrimp Quesadillas ($9.95).

We watched as fish was selected from the display case and then cooked in an extremely small kitchen, in which we could see part of our meal being prepared.

Each bite of my sandwich, with the salmon’s perfect sear and an even smattering of garlic mayo melted in my mouth. The succulent sauteed Gulf

shrimp in the quesadillas were tossed with sauteed red and yellow peppers, tomato, onion and corn with melted Jack cheese and a side of mango salsa to temper down the spiciness.

Other sandwiches include Seared Tuna on Sourdough, Crab Cake on French Roll, Tilapia on Kaiser Roll and Grouper on French Roll.

With an ever-changing menu, E&S will continue to excite and delight with its fierce flavor components and inventive creations.

If seafood is what you’re after, E&S Fish Company is quite a catch.

ART IS ‘THE WINE OF LIFE’ St. Charles artist to feature local landscapes in solo exhibition

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ineteenth-century novelist Jean Paul Richter once said that, “Art is indeed not the bread but the wine of life.” Bringing the German-Romantic writer’s words to life is local artist Nick Freeman, whose photographs and paintings of Fox Valley landscapes and scenes of everyday life will be featured in an 80-piece solo exhibition, entitled “The Wine of Life.”

Beginning with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, the exhibition will run through Saturday, July 5, at the Norris Cultural Arts Center gallery in St. Charles.

“It’s every artist’s dream to have a one-man show,” said Freeman, who had a career in advertising before exclusively focusing his time on art a couple of years ago. “It’s a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to show the full array of my work in one place at one time.”

A St. Charles resident and proponent of the Fox Valley area, Freeman paints scenes of everyday life set amidst the backdrop of the Fox River and its surrounding communities.

“The region isn’t necessarily known for its dramatic terrain, but the Fox River has always been a draw for me,” Freeman said. “… I think that people are so used to seeing their smalltown surroundings that they don’t often take a view of them … but when they’re put in the context of a painting, they kind of look at it with a fresh eye.”

The featured work of “Wine of Life” – an exhibition title chosen because of Freeman’s affinity for Richter’s quote, as well as its ability to capture the essence of how art relates to life, he said – will be “Sunrise, St. Charles,” a 29”-by-40” oil painting on canvas depicting the western banks of the Fox River in early-morning light.

The “Loyalty Day Parade” piece was a several-year process to bring to fruition, Freeman said, adding that the process involved snapping hundreds of reference photos, sketching, assembling the images and then, finally, painting.

Freeman’s preferred style of painting is realism, which requires an attention to detail. “[Realism] is what I find most rewarding,” he said. “I find a subject that particularly interests me, and I enjoy rendering it in such a way that hopefully I capture the essence of the subject and the thing that originally attracted me.”

The detail that went into portraying some of the real people depicted in the “Loyalty Day Parade” painting, ended in a subject recognizing himself after he stumbled upon the work at a pop-up gallery at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles, Freeman said, adding that the man sent him an email saying he was both surprised and flattered.

As part of the exhibit, Freeman also will share roughly 30 large-format photographs of vintage neon signs he’s captured throughout his travels across the country.

Freeman’s interest in the subject, he said, lies in his affection for graphic design and typography, but also in the transient nature of neon signage.

Further aiding in the preservation of neon signs, Freeman landed a book deal with indie publisher Lake Claremont Press, which will feature images of Chicago’s neon sign heritage. The book, entitled “Good Old Neon,” is due out in September.

In an attempt to explore additional uses of Norris’ gallery space, board of directors member Mark Smith said that the “Wine of Life” exhibition will offer multi-dimensional content, including gallery talks and Norris’ first-ever art auction, which will feature pieces from the gallery’s own collection of work. Also featured in the auction will be the exhibition’s featured work, “Sunrise, St. Charles.”

“It’s a very interactive way of presenting an art show, where you get several opportunities to meet the artist,” Smith said.

Freeman will kick off informal gallery talks Friday evenings in June. The gallery talks, which are free and

open to the public (donations accepted), will begin at 6 p.m. and include refreshments and live music, with presentations beginning at 7 p.m.

The first gallery talk – “Gallery Walk” – on Friday, June 6, will include a stroll through the exhibition led by Freeman, who will share anecdotes, inspirations and ideas behind his work. The “Good Old Neon” presentation will take place Friday, June 13; and “Inside the Studio: Paintings Step by Step” will take place Friday, June 20.

The fundraising reception and auction sale of select

paintings and photos will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 27. The event also will include a silent auction of donated products and services from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the live auction. Food and beverages will be served.

Tickets, which are available at www.norrisculturalarts.com, will cost $40 a person or $75 a couple. Net sales will benefit the Norris Center.

Freeman’s work will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition.

annah Schilb began long-jumping in seventh grade and triple-jumping in ninth grade.

Guess which event is considered the stronger one on the St. Charles North sophomore’s Class 3A girls track and field state meet itinerary?

While Schilb and her coaches tout her triple jump chances more firmly than the long jump, she remains dialed in to both as Friday’s preliminaries in Charleston approach.

“They say if you can long jump, you can triple jump. If you can triple jump, you can long jump. So [triple] was like one of those things that I tried and I was kind of good at it, I guess,” Schilb said. “I enjoy it a lot, too. It’s kind of different and it’s difficult, and when things are difficult, not a lot of people do it. So it’s kind of a good event to do because not a lot of people do it.”

Schilb proved to be one of the state’s top athletes in the triple jump in her debut season, advancing to the prelims as a freshman. Her best effort of 35 feet, 11¼ inches fell short of the top 12 cut for the finals, however.

“When I got down there, I was just kind of like wideeyed and looking at everyone around me,” Schilb said. “Everyone kind of did their own thing the whole time, and I was really unaware of what I should be doing, so my coach

helped me out a lot.”

Naturally, North Stars coach John Osmanski is happy to assist Schilb along with the rest of his state-bound athletes: seniors Ashley England (3,200 meters) and Jessica Grill (pole vault).

Still, he knows Schilb also

accelerated her development thanks to an offseason regimen with DuPage Track Club.

The club features a handful of coaches from Lake Park, a perennial jumping events contender at the state meet.

It was time especially well spent for Schilb’s triple jump

technique.

“Because she’s so strong, she got the form easily. It was a question, a matter, of her running down the runway and learning how to bound, which made her successful in the triple jump,” Osmanski said. “And once she learned how to do that and then going to her camp in the summer … she carried that over through here.”

Schilb increased her personal records to 36-11½ in the triple jump and 17-9 in the long jump this season.

Her effort of 36-1¾ at the 3A Illinois Prep Top Times meet – the unofficial indoor state meet – in Bloomington in March was good enough for seventh.

Grill and England also qualified for Prep Top Times, and are eager to improve their standing two months later.

“We have the experience between us,” Grill said.

East (14-4-5) struck again swiftly as Amanda Hilton and Sophie Jendrzeczyk followed with goals. The Saints opened the scoring with 18:58 remaining before halftime and were ahead, 3-0, 5:45 later.

“We came out to win and we got the job done,” said Hilton, who added an assist and has 14 goals this season. “We

put the ball away and kept the ball out of our net, got a shutout, and that was huge for us.”

The Saints will face Wheaton Warrenville South for the regional title at 5 p.m. Friday.

Hilton’s goal came off a rocket shot from the top of the box. The Saints then scored a third goal with 13:13 left in the half.

West Chicago (16-15) had pushed an attack through the middle of the field that was defended and quickly turned by the Saints.

Midfielder Kelli Santo Paulo sent a pass to Jendrzeczyk, who scored to give East a 3-0 lead it carried into intermission.

Jendrzeczyk added another goal in the second half.

The strong play of the Saints’ midfield was a big part of the team victory.

“Today our midfield did a

great job of neutralizing [West Chicago’s offense],” East coach Paul Jennison said.

“That was one of the reasons the back four was able to have more confidence.”

Even with the great efforts of West Chicago’s Kayla Kirkwood, the Wildcats were unable to score on the East defense. West Chicago coach Cesar Gomez took a positive outlook on the program moving forward.

“We are looking forward to next year; we lose only one player from that bunch,” Gomez said.

The Saints’ final goal was scored by Claire Rasmussen and was assisted by the backup goalie Alison Chesterfield.

Chesterfield boomed a goal kick to Rasmussen, who was able to elude a Wildcats defender and score, making it 5-0.

St. Charles North sophomore Hannah Schilb works out in the school’s weight room Tuesday.

Schilb will be competing in the long jump and the triple jump at this weekend’s state meet in Charleston.

Schilb said her mother, a former middle school track athlete, reminds her before

each meet to have fun.

The practice figures to hold this weekend, even as Schilb demonstrates her focus.

WEST CHICAGO – The West Chicago and St. Charles East girls soccer teams faced a unique challenge when Wednesday’s 3A West Chicago Regional semifinal resumed.

The match began Tuesday, but a severe storm forced the game to be stopped and moved to the next day.

Almost eight minutes had been played before the game was suspended.

Wednesday’s portion of the game started with a West Chicago corner kick that was successfully defended by the Saints.

Motorcycle racing Fairgrounds-bound

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Eager to rev up their venue’s summer offerings, Kane County Fairgrounds officials approached groundskeeper Tyler Kramer about ideas last fall.

Kramer consulted David Thomas of Elburn, a longtime friend and motorcycle racer, and those are the nuts and bolts of how Kane County Ultracross was born.

On June 6 and 7, the firstyear endeavor will unveil its brand on a dirt, clay and sand track in front of the fair-

“It’s good, small, quick, fast-paced racing,” said Thomas, who co-owns the

company with Kramer.

“More in your face than a big outdoor track.”

KC Ultracross held its first practices last week, attracting about 35 riders from all skill levels. The course will be open for practices from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays through the July 16 to 20 Kane County Fair, then reopen after the fair’s conclusion.

A June 28 show also is booked, with other dates in the works for later in the summer.

Thomas, 56, grew up racing around the Midwest, re-

calling travels to southern Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, among other locales.

Surveying last week’s practice participants, the Batavia native found a good mix of up-and-coming regional motocross talent, as well as more recreational athletes attracted to the course’s proximity to home.

All participants must be members of the American Motorcyclist Association.

Racing involving 250cc and 450cc motorcycles will be purse-based at the Class-A, expert level. All other classes will compete for trophies.

“First one, so we’re going to learn a lot, I’m sure,” Thomas said. “But we’re going to be here for years if they let us.”

Fox River Harley-Davidson, less than a mile north off the fairgrounds on Randall Road, serves as the track’s title sponsor. Other partners include Illinois Powersports and VOID Clothing.

That was until the Rockets turned everything around by scoring four straight goals over a 25-minute period in the first half and held onto a

North boys v’ball gets share of UEC River title KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – To the three victors of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division boys volleyball title go the spoils of a traveling trophy.

The story about how North got its piece of the hardware has legs, too.

North clinched a threeway tie with St. Charles East and Geneva with Wednesday’s 25-23, 25-23 home sweep of Streamwood, responding after Tuesday’s originally-scheduled match was postponed because of a power outage moments before the first serve.

“I swear the announcer says he’s ready to announce the lineups and the lights went out,” North coach Todd Weimer said. “Streamwood thought, ‘Ooh, this is their intro.’ ” Not exactly. Just a nuisance after the completion of the JV game as well as a teacher appreciation night ceremony and national anthem preceding the varsity game.

On Wednesday, the teams returned to their places and North (17-16, 4-1 UEC River) earned a tight victory. Jeff Rollins contributed five kills, five digs, seven assists and three blocks. Ben Connor had eight assists, while Jack Bujko smacked four kills.

North graduated much of its core from last season’s IHSA third-place state finisher, which went 5-0 to win the conference. Weimer said he

couldn’t overstate his pride in his players, both Wednesday and throughout the season.

“It was definitely a challenge,” Weimer said. “We struggled early in both sets, but we were able to pull it off and come from behind in both sets. I’m excited for the boys.

I think they deserve it, and they did a nice job, especially with all the guys that graduated.”

GIRLS SOCCER IHSA Class 3A Geneva Regional: Geneva 6, Elk Grove Village 0: Geneva completed its romp against the Grenadiers, scoring three more goals as the game picked up late in the first half on the heels of Tuesday’s weather postponement.

Courtney Lardas and Megan Albrecht made it 5-0 for Geneva (14-5-2) before Taylor Williams completed a two-day hat trick with a penalty kick goal late in the game.

The Vikings advanced to face Glenbard North for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“Kaneland’s obviously a very strong team,” Rosary coach Brian Frank said. “Obviously, we’re going to have to make some adjustments to be prepared for them on Saturday.”

Radabaugh’s record blast propels Vikings

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – With one swing of the bat, Geneva first baseman Annika Radabaugh broke both a tie and record Wednesday afternoon.

Not only did Radabaugh’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth, her ninth of the season, put the Geneva softball team ahead of Elgin but it set a new mark for most home runs in a season by a Viking softball player.

The blast over the left field fence proved to be the decisive run on senior day, as Geneva won the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game, 5-4.

A freshman, Radabaugh did not realize at first that she had hit a home run “I was running to second and heard them coming out [of the dugout], so that’s when I realized it,” Radabaugh said. “I was just focusing on getting a hit.”

Not just any hit, as it turned out.

“That’s nine home runs for her this year, the most we have ever had in a season,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “And it was a game winner, too. We needed every run we got today.”

Four times, Geneva (19-11, 10-8 UEC River) scored runs with just one hit.

Kaitlyn Plocinski and Madison Keith also hit solo home runs.

Plocinski put Geneva ahead 1-0 in the first with her drive and Keith extended the lead to 2-0 in the second with her center field blast.

Sarah Baurer opened the third with a triple to right and scored when the throw to third got past Elgin’s third baseman.

Elgin (13-18, 9-9) tied the game at 3-all in the fifth. The Maroons loaded the bases on two Geneva errors and a fielder’s choice.

“We tried to stay in the game until the end,” Elgin coach Nick Bumbales said.

“Maybe a hit or two too late to get her [Lombardo] out of the game, but we battled. I was happy with that.”

The Vikings had opportunities to widen their lead in the third and fourth but could not cash in, leaving runners in scoring position in both innings.

“We got off to a pretty good start swinging the bats but we did not execute well,” Dierks said.

“We had a runner on third and nobody out and didn’t score a run. Someone on second with nobody out and didn’t score. If we had manufactured those runs, 7-4 going into the last inning would be little easier to deal with.”

Cadence Fitness & Health Center, 296 Randall Road in Geneva, is hosting the 14th annual Multisport Madness Triathlon Team triathlon festival beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday. In addition to the traditional youth triathlons for juniors (6-10 year olds), seniors (11-16 year olds) and elite (12-16 year olds with previous sprint triathlon experience), the event has expanded to include a Mixed Team Relay Super Sprint Series race that opens competition to adults. Ex-players sue NFL over drug use WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the heels of massive concussion litigation that the NFL is still trying to resolve, the league now faces a new courtroom challenge that takes aim at the way professional football teams distributed drugs to players for the past four decades.

More than 600 players, led by former Bears stars Jim McMahon and Richard Dent, filed

a class-action complaint in U.S. District Court on Tuesday alleging the league illegally supplied them with painkillers to conceal injuries and mask pain. The players say addictive drugs were administered without proper prescriptions, in illegal doses, without medical supervision and with little or no explanation of risks and dangers.

“Rather than allowing players the opportunity to rest and heal, the NFL has illegally and unethically substituted pain medications for proper health care to keep the NFL’s tsunami of dollars flowing,” the complaint reads.

The NFL’s lawyers declined to comment on the suit Tuesday afternoon, saying they had yet to read it, a league spokesman said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said at the conclusion of Tuesday’s meeting that he had not yet been able to study the details of the lawsuit.

The NFL reached an agreement last year to settle concussion-related litigation with former players for $765 million.

A federal judge in Philadelphia rejected the deal, though, asking both sides to review the terms and make certain the funds are sufficient.

‘The Double’ has Eisenberg and Dostoevsky – enough said

Two Jesse Eisenbergs, of course. And all for the price of one. It’s the ultimate double-down, yielding huge dividends for Richard Ayoade and his seductively surreal treatise on self-identity succinctly called “The Double.”

It’s a real mind-blower, too. But then that’s what you’d expect from a filmmaker inspired by the novelty of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel of the same name.

What you don’t anticipate is such a funny, fully realized portrait of existential madness that also finds time to pay reverent homage to Ayoade’s biggest influences, Terry Gilliam and David Lynch.

You see it in the dystopian, steampunk sets evoking the drudgery and repression straight out of Gilliam’s forgotten masterpiece, “Brazil.” And you sense it in the vivid display of hallucinatory grotesqueness that instantly recalls Lynch’s headscratchers, “Eraserhead” and “Mulholland Drive.” Yet Ayoade (“Submarine”) still makes “The Double” his own, with a style and flair so mesmerizing it’s hard to believe it’s only his second turn as a writer-director.

Shot almost entirely in dark sepia tones and set in a nightmarish cubicle farm, “The Double” fills the soul with loneliness and dread, as it depicts a young man who has become all but invisible to everyone

You laugh at the dark humor derived from the constant stream of indignities Eisenberg’s Simon James endures from his bosses and drone-like co-workers. But you also empathize with the isolation engulfing Simon as he’s repeatedly made to feel utterly unnoticed and alone.

It’s a part tailor-made for Eisenberg, an actor who never fails to disappear into a role. Or, in this case, two roles. That’s because he also pops up as Simon’s doppelganger, James Simon, a dead ringer in the looks department, but a complete opposite in terms of morals and personality. What a joy it is to watch Eisenberg flesh out both characters to the point where it’s easy to believe Simon and James are two distinct and com-

pletely different people. No simple task. But Eisenberg makes it look effortless, which proves invaluable when both are often dressed in the same drab, nondescript clothing.

The twist, straight out of the Hitchcock canon, is that Simon becomes so dominated by his alter ego that he starts to truly believe he no longer exists, especially after James takes over his home, job and Hannah (a radiant Mia Wasikowska), the beautiful girl from the copier department he’s too afraid to approach.

Might suicide, the apparent No. 1 cause of death in this despotic society, be his only way out? You never can tell because Ayoade and his co-writer, Avi (brother of Harmony) Korine, always keep you guessing, not to

mention laughing, as they mine a rich vein of dark humor throughout. They further the enchantment by bathing their story in romantic longing intensified by the potent chemistry sparked between Wasikowska and Eisenberg.

You root hard for both of them, while also being transfixed by Ayoade’s imaginative imagery and eclectic music choices. It’s not for everybody, but if your tastes veer toward the bizarre and unusual, “The Double” is this week’s single best reason to blow your mind.

Link between fats and heart disease not entirely clear Dear Doctor K: Here we go again. After years of hearing that diets rich in saturated fats increase the risk for heart disease, I hear a new study says that’s not so. What gives?

Dear Reader: I don’t blame you for being frustrated. So, let me start with the bottom line.

Take this new study with several grains of salt. (Incidentally, it still is true that too much salt is bad for your health, so just a few grains, please.)

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, you heard a lot about how fat was bad for you. That led a lot of people to switch from foods rich in fat to foods rich in carbohydrates. During the 1990s, nutrition scientists began to distinguish the health effects of different types of fat. Their message was simple. There are “bad fats,” but there also are “good fats.” (They also pointed out that there are “good carbs” and there are “bad carbs.” But we’ll leave carbs for another column.)

The first type of bad fat identified was saturated fats. These are abundant in fatty red meats and in dairy products (milk, cream, cheese, ice cream) that have not been treated to lower the saturated fat content.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In the mid-1990s, trans fats were incriminated as bad fats. Diets rich in trans fats were found to be even worse for your health – particularly heart health – than saturated fats. Trans fats in our diets largely come from foods processed by manufacturers, such as stick margarine. They were created in order to extend the shelf life of foods. Trans fats can be found in commercially made cookies, cakes and biscuits, and in other processed foods such as frozen pizza and coffee creamer.

On the other hand, in the 1990s the evidence grew that polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats are good for your health – again, particularly for heart health. Polyunsaturated fats are abundant in fish, nuts, seeds and vegetables, as well as in soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower and fish oils. Olive oil is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and also has polyunsaturated fats.

The study you referred to is a

new analysis of 72 studies that included more than 600,000 people.

It was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Like prior studies, the new study found that diets rich in trans fats were unhealthy.

The surprise was that it found no evidence that saturated fats increased the risk of heart disease. In another surprise, the study didn’t find any heart-protective benefits from polyunsaturated “good” fats.

I’m not changing my eating habits based on this new study.

Several nutrition scientists that I respect believe the new analysis may be flawed. For now, the basics remain: • Aim for balance in your diet – not too much of one thing and not too little of another.

• Eat real food – food that is unprocessed or minimally processed.

• Limit total calories. Keep an eye on portion size.

• Exercise regularly.

• If you smoke, try to quit.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and, although I’m not an angel, I’ve never done anything of a serious nature.

Recently, my parents went to a community “drug awareness” meeting. I guess they told them what signs to look for if a teen is taking drugs. Now I feel like a convict in prison instead of a teen living at home. They constantly search my bedroom, ask me a bunch of questions like: “Why are your eyes red? Why are you always tired? Why are you getting a C in math? Are you hanging around kids who use drugs?”

I keep telling them that I’m not on drugs and neither are my friends, but this doesn’t seem to satisfy them.

Sometimes I feel like trying drugs. If my parents think I’m a druggie, I might as well be one. – Kenny, Rochester, N.Y. Dear Kenny: Your parents are going through a phase in their “raising a family” responsibility. The community drug meeting has caused them to overreact, but in time they will return to normal. Trying drugs, just to spite your mom and dad, would be a very stupid move (as I’m sure you are aware).

If your parents continue their extra strenuous drug watch, you might discuss your problem with your school counselor. Sometimes an outside professional source can get parents back to thinking rationally rather than emotionally.

Dr. Wallace: I used to believe that girls and boys should be treated as equals in everything, but now I’m not so sure. I am taking karate lessons and I’m the only girl in my class. I thought that

Dear Stefanie: Hollow victories are a waste of time! Ask to be treated like all the others taking karate lessons.

But I would advise you to ask the instructor to make sure your karate partners are similar to you in size. If your karate lessons continue to be painful, find another activity that you will enjoy and suffer no physical pain.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, a freshman at a community college, and live at home with my parents.

My curfew is 11 p.m. on weekdays and 12:30 a.m. on weekends.

I think this is a lousy deal. After all, I’m 19, an adult, and consider myself a mature individual.

The form of scoring makes a difference

Henri Poincare, a French mathematician who died in 1912, said, “Ideas rose in clouds; I felt them collide until pairs interlocked, so to speak, making a stable combination.”

Despite lots of groundbreaking work, he only became famous with the study of chaotic dynamics, which started in 1963. Poincare is considered the Father of Chaos.

At the bridge table, you try to keep things orderly, but sometimes the form of scoring can make life chaotic. For example, in today’s deal South is in three no-trump. What should he do after West leads the spade six if his only job is to make the contract; or if he is playing in a pair event (a duplicate) and would like to win as many tricks as possible?

North, despite having only 19 high-card points, was tempted to open two no-trump. But he decided against it because of the weak club holding.

South seems to start with six top tricks: three spades (given the lead), two hearts and one diamond. And surely he can establish four club tricks. However, if the defender with the club ace holds it up until the second round, declarer will need a hand entry, which must be the spade king.

So, if making the contract is all that counts, South should win the first trick with dummy’s spade ace, then lead the club jack and another club. The contract is home.

In a pair event, though, it will be tempting to hope that West has led fourth-highest from a suit headed by the queen and call for dummy’s spade 10 at trick one.

Here, that costs the contract, because West has led second-highest from a weak suit – unlucky.
