Elburn Lions offer free eye screenings, food ELBURN – The Elburn Lions Club has planned a full day of eye screenings to coincide with its monthly spaghetti dinner event Tuesday at the club’s location at 500 S. Filmore St. in Elburn.

Dave Broz, a Lions Club member and the Elburn club’s former president, said the club will be offering free diabetic retinopathy eye screenings. He said the screenings will feature a trained technician.

The machine takes digital retina images, and the images are reviewed by staff at Illinois Retina Associates.

Broz said it’s part of the Lions’ mission.

“Lions are dedicated to helping those who are visually impaired and doing what we can to prevent

blindness and educating people about it,” Broz said.

Broz said the process is very quick, and participants will not have to have their eyes dilated.

“They’ve detected, in these screenings, people who have had eye cancer or other ailments they otherwise wouldn’t have known about,” Broz said. “It’s uncovered serious conditions.”

The eye screenings will be from noon to 6 p.m.

Paisano’s will provide free pizza during lunch hours to those who participate in the screenings. The first 50 people to have their eyes screened will receive cou-

pons for free ice cream from Alice’s Place in Elburn.

At 5 p.m., the Elburn Lions Club will host its monthly spaghetti dinner, which runs through 7 p.m. The spaghetti dinner is free, but donations are accepted. All are welcome to the spaghetti dinner, which typically takes place on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Elburn and Countryside Fire Explorer Post orientation night set

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Those between the ages of 14 to 20 who are thinking about a career in the fire or emergency medical services, or just interested in learning what firefighters and emergency personnel do, are invited to attend an orientation night Thursday for the Elburn

and Countryside Fire Protection District’s Explorer Post 1357.

“This is one way that they can get in and start learning about it,” said Robert Stevens, a firefighter and paramedic for the district and the post’s lead adviser. “I look at it as an introduction to the fire service. We give them the tools of the trade.”

The orientation night

will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 210 E. North St., Elburn. The event will feature firefighting and EMS demonstrations, along with information about becoming a member of Explorer Post 1357.

Stevens noted seven members of the post have gone on to become paid oncall firefighters for the district, including two who are

graduating from the post this week.

Applications will be on hand for those interested in joining the post. Parents/ guardians are encouraged to attend.

LOCAL BRIEFS Orchard Road improvements to begin Starting the week of May 25, milling and paving improvements on Orchard Road will begin. ‘Portrait of a Soldier’ at Sugar Grove library

Annual event honors outstanding students

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – High-achieving students were recognized Tuesday in the annual Kane County Chronicle Achievement Program, which recognizes them for excellence in academics, leadership and character.

Students from area high schools are nominated during the school year by their teachers and guidance counselors, culminating with the Chronicle’s recognition program.

Kane County Editor Kathy Gresey shared a personal story about her father, known as “Pete the Painter,” because he painted houses and warehouses for a living.

“I always strived to get the best grades I could,” Gresey said. “And when I think about where that motivation for good grades came from, it boils down to one person – my dad, Pete. … I always knew Pete was expecting me to land good grades.”

About 150 students and parents attended the event held at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles as Chronicle Marketing Manager Haley Pitts announced each nominee and their accomplishments.

Nominations from teachers and guidance counselors

described students in glowing terms, such as “as good as they come,” “impeccable work ethic” and “always encouraging others.”

Parents Michael and Virginia Prisco attended to honor their son, James, a senior at Geneva High School.

“It’s nice they recognize the kids,” Michael Prisco said.

Sara Lopez, a senior at St. Charles North High School, agreed.

“I think it’s a great way to recognize students in the area and make them feel appreciated for what they do,” Lopez said.

Her mother, Dorothy Lopez, added, “I’m just proud of her and all her accomplishments.”

In a drawing at the end of the program, Madeline Paliganoff from St. Charles East won a $1,500 scholarship; Monica Cabaj from South Elgin High School won the $1,000 scholarship; and Caleb Vidad from Marmion Academy won the $500 scholarship.

The scholarships are made possible by KCT Credit Union.

Sergio Rodriguez, KCT vice president of marketing and information technology, also congratulated the students.

“You should all be proud of your accomplishments,” Rodriguez said.

BATAVIA – Demolition began Tuesday of the former Swanson’s Hardware store/ Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia to make way for a new Walgreens store.

“It’s a good sign for the future vitality of downtown Batavia,” Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said, as demolition proceeded behind him.

“Good things come to those who wait.”

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-squarefoot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza.

Plans are for the new Walgreens store to open in late March or early April 2016, Dempsey said. He said he hopes the project will be the catalyst for more development in the downtown.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, who was among those watching the demolition, said the project represented “a major shot of new energy in downtown Batavia.”

Aldermen in April approved a third extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store as Batavia Enterprises worked out more details on the project.

Dempsey said the reorganization of the Walgreens corporation has slowed the project.

“That was an unforeseen hiccup,” Dempsey said.

Wheelchair no obstacle for Kaneland graduate

alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Deanna Muir was only 1 year old when she was injured in an accident in the driveway of her home. She suffered paralysis and since then has had to use a wheelchair.

Her mother, Cindy Muir, recalled feeling as if her daughter’s opportunities had been taken away.

“We thought, ‘Oh, there’s so many things she’s not going to be able to do,’ ” Cindy Muir said. “But she’s proved everybody wrong.”

The Kane County Chronicle is highlighting local high school students this week for a five-day series celebrating graduating seniors.

As Deanna Muir prepares to graduate from Kaneland High School, the Maple Park resident looks back on a full experience in her years in School District 302. She was a cheerleader in middle school. She has been a member of the high school’s color guard team. She was on the high school’s bowling team. She drives. She went to prom and homecoming. She works at Red Lobster. And she is heading to Baker College in Michigan, where she plans to study to become a nurse.

Deanna Muir said it wasn’t always that way.

“My freshman year, I was the most shy person,” she said, adding she was able to change that, and now is “the opposite of shy.”

“I talk to everyone,” she said. “No matter what, I’m going to talk to you.”

Deanna Muir said she has enjoyed her time in the various activities she is a part of. She said she always

wanted to be a cheerleader and was “surprisingly good at it.” She had not been bowling before joining the high school team as a sophomore. She said she had friends on the team, and they encouraged her to participate.

She said her time on the color guard was challenging, adding “there’s actually a lot to it.” She has been able to participate in competition and perform in parades.

Deanna Muir said driving isn’t that difficult for her. She drives a cus-

tomized van. “[It has] a lever,” she said. “I pull down to accelerate and push it to brake.”

There are considerations she has that others likely do not. For instance, she said it’s important to check whether a building or vehicle is accessible for wheelchairs. When she went on a recent trip to Disney World, she said she had to sit out during some rides.

She said she is looking forward to college. She said she has a passion for nursing, so she can’t wait to begin her studies. She’ll be joined by her best friend, Tatiana Lee, at Baker College.

Deanna Muir said she is thankful to be graduating.

“I just want the next chapter to happen,” she said.

Cindy Muir doesn’t doubt her daughter at all. She said she is confident the experience will go well.

“You have to make the best of what is given to you in life,” Cindy Muir said. “She absolutely does.”

Aurora Central graduate leaves lasting impression

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Whenever Alex Vonderhaar walks near St. Patrick Church in downtown St. Charles, he will be reminded of his Eagle Scout project.

The project, building a flower garden at the west side of the church’s entrance, was one of many ways the St. Charles resident will have left a lasting impression on the area. Vonderhaar, who is graduating from Aurora Central Catholic High School, also

was part of other significant feats.

He is one of Aurora Central’s valedictorians. He was part of Alex the school’s Vonderhaar first regional championship boys soccer team, an accomplishment he lists as one of his most favorite during his time at the school.

Vonderhaar will head to Marquette University to study electrical engineering.

“That area has always interested me,” Vonderhaar said. “Math and science have always been my favorite subjects.”

He has been busy during his high school years. He played soccer and tennis. He participated on the WYSE team, which stands for worldwide youth in science and en-

gineering.

He remembered a particularly busy week in which he was preparing for four significant tests and playing piano in the school musical. He said it was a good lesson in time management.

He said his Scouting experience helped him try activities he otherwise might not have been able to try, such as horseback riding and rock climbing.

The Eagle Scout project took significant time. He said he accomplished it in the summer of 2014. The project

earned congratulations from St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, and Vonderhaar said he received the key to the city in addition to a proclamation, in which Rogina called the garden “a beautiful addition to the downtown church area.”

Vonderhaar said he wanted to give back to his church, which hosted Boy Scout meetings.

“It was in such a public area,” Vonderhaar said. “If I’m ever downtown, I can see it and remember what I accomplished.”

Capes and Justin Yahnig co-founded HorsePower in March 2012 to provide therapeutic horseback riding lessons to those of all ages with disabilities, according to its website.

Geneva man plants thousands of tulips for spring display

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – While driving on Fargo Boulevard near Route 31 in early spring, it is impossible to miss a kaleidoscope of color featuring thousands of tulips in bloom.

This natural wonder is the work of Paul Duke, 62, a retired oil and gas engineer, who plants tulips in the thousands on his quarter-acre property.

After he and his wife moved to Geneva 12 years ago, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the planting started as a hobby and continued.

“This year, I planted just under 6,000,” Duke said. “Usually, they don’t all come back.

Maybe half you plant one year will come back.”

He’s planted 5,000 and 6,000 at a time over the years, with maybe 1,000 to 2,500 coming back and some blooming again four years later.

“It takes 20 days during the fall starting in September, and sometimes to early December, to get everything in,” Duke said. “I don’t do it 20 days in a row, but I might

plant 400 in one day and 500 the next day and then be off for a few days.”

Duke’s property also sports flowering redbuds, crabapples, hawthorne and catalpa trees, 600 Virginia bluebells and maybe 900 softball-sized purple allium. Other areas are host to an ever-growing perennial garden and a vegetable garden.

“I always gardened on a big scale,” Duke said. “I wanted a garden on a larger scale, and I have the opportunity, and so I do.”

DUDLEY C. LEWIS Dudley C. Lewis, age 87, of St. Charles, formerly from Hendersonville, North Carolina, left this earth on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Delnor Glen, surrounded by his family.

He was born in 1927, in Shelby, Ohio, the son of Harry and Vera (Hall) Lewis.

Dudley was a graduate of Bowling

Green State University in Ohio. He was a stockbroker and a bond salesman before his retirement in 1994. In addition, he served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II. He was an avid golfer and bridge player.

He was very active in the Hendersonville, NC community having been the former president of the Opportunity House Golf League, former president of the board of Opportunity House, former president of the Laurel Park Civic Association, and former president of the steering committee for FISH, a volunteer organization that provides residents transportation to medical and therapy appointments.

He is survived by his beloved children, Ann (John) Ritchie of Geneva and John Lewis of Winfield; grandson, Nick Ritchie; and granddaughter, Emily Ritchie (fiancé Anthony Roesch); and many dear nieces and nephews.

Dudley was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Gordon Lewis; brother, David Lewis; eldest brother, Hal Lewis; and his loving wife, Joan.

Interment will be held privately at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby, Ohio.

HUNTER A. MYERS Born: Oct. 29, 1993 Died: May 12, 2015 Hunter Arthur Myers, was born in Lagrange, Illinois on October 29, 1993. He was the son of David Myers and Cassandra (Yahn) Neeb and was a graduate of Grace Christian Home School.

Hunter had a quiet, gentle spirit who loved the Lord. He received his spiritual nourishment at Stewart Road Christian Ministries and Elevate Church of Monroe, Michigan.

Hunter was a young man with a great sense of humor and enjoyed being silly just to make others smile.

He loved time spent with friends and family. While most knew him as Hunter, one Aunt used to call him “Ham”,

because of his initials. Hunter enjoyed eating out at his favorite Japanese restaurant, seeing the latest movies, had a passion for Star Wars and was a huge Yoda fan. His hobbies included drawing, painting, photography and teaching himself Japanese. Hunter appreciated being outdoors, especially in the rain. He enjoyed a day at the beach, riding his bike or simply just driving his car. In his quiet time, he could be found playing video games in the company of his canine companion, “Grace.”

Hunter Arthur Myers, age 21, of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, in Frenchtown Township. His passing was preceded by his maternal grandfather Marian Yahn.

Geneva aldermen wrestle with request from Onesti

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen on Monday discussed a promoter’s request for $10,700 in in-kind police traffic control for a three-day concert in July. The key issue was consistency in the city’s policy of providing that kind of partnership.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the nonprofit organizations – such as the chamber and the cultural arts commission – that get this kind of support have Geneva’s well-being as their sole mission.

Other nonprofit and for-profit groups pay the cost to the city of providing police, fire and other services, officials said.

The request came from Ron Onesti, who owns Onesti Entertainment and the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

He plans to have the concert at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve.

Onesti said he was investing $200,000 to $300,000 just for the bands and wants a partnership with the city to promote Geneva. Onesti said that was why he was calling the new concert event MIG for Music In Geneva.

“It’s a big risk,” Onesti said. “Will you partner with me? I’ll bring this to town.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he was not comfortable supporting this type of event with the city’s tax dollars. Radecki said he was willing to revisit the request after a concert of this type has a track record.

But 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian supported Onesti’s request.

“There is going to be an economic impact,” Simonian said. “I think this is a very worthwhile investment. He’s looking for a little something from us.”

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said he took a $200,000 risk to buy his house

in Geneva.

“The city did not give me money to welcome me to Geneva,” Maladra said.

Carolyn Hill, wife of former 1st Ward Alderman Sam Hill and a member of the Cultural Arts Commission, said when the commission was organized in 2006, the city provided $5,000 in seed money.

But after that, she said, the group was denied funds and held fundraisers to pay for events.

“Just consider the investment you have not made in cultural arts,” Carolyn Hill said, speaking as an individual, not as a member of the Cultural Arts Commission.

Ultimately, aldermen voted 6-3 as the Committee of the Whole not to recommend providing in-kind services as requested, with Simonian, 2nd Ward Aldermen Richard Marks and Don Cummings voting in favor. Third Ward Alderman Mary Seno was absent.

NORTH AURORA – Several village trustees on Monday voiced their objections to a proposal to develop a former bowling alley at 310 S. Lincolnway into a self-service storage facility.

The owners of Next Door Storage, which operates several facilities throughout the Chicago area, proposed converting the former 40,000-square-foot bowling alley into an indoor self-service storage facility.

The concept plan also included building self-storage facilities on the northern and western portions of the property.

“It would be a vast improvement over what is there now,” Next Door Storage

owner Jack Murphy said to village trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

My first year at the college, I was a shy and quiet person. But since that time, I have overcome this obstacle by branching out, becoming involved in different clubs and having great role models, all of which has helped me discover new things about myself and my interests. The faculty and staff here saw in me a leader and a public speaker that I didn’t see in myself. Waubonsee’s motto is “Where Futures Take Shape.” Reflecting back, I now see that Waubonsee gave me powerful tools to cultivate my future and has helped me build the life I am proud to live.

Being the Phi Theta Kappa vice president last year, I knew there was so much more I could be involved in on campus. I made the decision to proceed to the next level and run for Student Senate. Being elected as the 2014-15 Student Senate secretary has built my framework and polished off my rough corners. I have built long-lasting relationships and perfected new skills. Applying for Student Senate secretary was one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made because it has taught me to stay well-organized and to communicate with others. My involvement as vice president in Phi Theta Kappa has helped me to become a better team player, to take responsibility

While different, all of these experiences have one thing in common – they provided me with opportunities to develop my leadership skills and build a strong repertoire for my future. Instead, she found a wealth of opportunity to expand her academics, athletics and other experiences, Lesak said.

“I never thought Waubonsee – a small school five minutes from my house – would have offered so many experiences and build me into the individual I am today,” Lesak wrote in an email.

“You have to make your own experience. I took the initiative to join clubs and sports.

It opened so many doors for me,” she added. “I got a great education there.”

Melissa Forte, Lesak’s academic counselor at Waubonsee, said Lesak “is an exceptional individual in and out of the classroom.”

“She was a tutor to other students on campus, and she excelled just as well in her sport,” Forte said. “I think she really blossomed and found her way academically within her field.”

Lesak also won the Student-Athletes Taking Academic Responsibility – or STAR – award, Forte said, which measures an athlete’s academic integrity both in the classroom and within their sport.

“She was an easy choice this year,” Forte said.

SUGAR GROVE – Amanda Lesak of Sugar Grove always has had goals and – literally – ran with them.

Lesak, 19, was one of the top five cross country runners while attending Kaneland High School.

She ran track as well, qualifying for state.

After graduation in 2013, she went to Waubonsee Community College on a cross country athletic scholarship, going on to place 34th in the NJCAA national championships in 2014.

During her two years at Waubonsee, she was an anatomy and physiology tutor, conducted an independent research project in an honors course, joined the clubs Delta Sigma Omicron, Future Health Care Providers Club, and worked to get the Christian Athletes as an official club at the school.

Lesak will graduate with her associate degree Thursday. She is in the process of deciding whether to go to the University of Illinois or Truman State University in Missouri to study in a health care-related field as a nurse practitioner or occupational therapist.

“My main goal is to help people,” Lesak said. “I can’t go wrong with either one.”

She has to decide between the two schools before June 1, she said.

“The Truman coach offered me a spot to run on his team,” Lesak said.

Lesak also was offered scholarships to both universities – just as she was as a high school graduate. But because of finances, Lesak lived at home and attended Waubonsee.

She praised Waubonsee’s academic program, saying it prepared her to continue her education with confidence.

“In high school, a lot of people look down on Waubonsee because some students will go there not knowing what they wanted to do or because they

NAFTA’s benefits outweigh its costs BLOOMBERG NEWS The fate of America’s most important free-trade agreement this century has become caught in a debate over its most important free-trade agreement of the last century.

When opponents of the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership say the deal would be “NAFTA on steroids,” it’s fair to say: Yes, and isn’t that the point?

The North American Free Trade Agreement, which took effect in 1994, has helped to raise the living standards of Americans, Canadians and Mexicans. The TPP, which President Barack Obama hopes will serve as the capstone to his second term, can

be expected to do the same for the 12 Pacific Rim nations it includes.

After some procedural shenanigans in the Senate – which nearly scuttled an important trade-promotion measure as well as the TPP talks – free-trade skeptics are back to citing NAFTA’s supposed failings. Their indictment consists mainly of three charges: that the agreement resulted in bigger trade deficits, greater job losses and lower wages.

None of these arguments stands up to scrutiny.

NAFTA’s opponents are fond of pointing out that the U.S. now has a $44 billion trade deficit with Mexico, compared with a $5 billion pre-NAFTA surplus. That $49 billion swing, however,

is due less to NAFTA than to the exponential growth in global trade in the 1990s and 2000s. The U.S. trade deficit with India, with which the U.S. has no trade treaty, also ballooned. Moreover, the trade data obscure the fact that goods imported from Mexico have about 40 percent U.S. content.

NAFTA adversaries also said that, because of the deal, the U.S. has lost jobs. But the question of exactly how many jobs were lost is essentially unanswerable, even for economists. (Some 850,000 jobless workers have received what is known as “trade adjustment assistance” over the past two decades, but how many others got jobs because of increased exports to Mexico

and Canada?) At any rate, it is a minuscule number in a U.S. workforce of 135 million people, 4 million to 6 million of whom lose or leave their jobs each month.

And what about that claim that NAFTA suppressed wages? Yes, manufacturing wages have declined, but mainly because manufacturers are choosing automation over humans to make things and opting to move to lower-paying southern states that eschew trade unions. Overall, in all three countries, real wages have risen since 1994.

What’s missing from the NAFTA debate is that trade among the three countries has jumped 300 percent, to $1.2 trillion. Absent, too, is recognition that NAFTA has helped

to make U.S. companies more efficient, competitive and profitable. Less expensive imports have improved Americans’ purchasing power, resulting in higher living standards. And per-person gross domestic product is up in all three NAFTA nations.

Opponents of such agreements like to point out that trade creates losers as well as winners. Of course it does – as does competition, as does technology. The goal should be to help the losers adjust, not prevent these deals altogether.

Because for all the problems it creates – and they are real – commerce among nations is one of the greatest forces for peace and prosperity the world has ever known.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Looking toward the future To the Editor: For many years, the Batavia Public Library and city of Batavia have enjoyed a very positive, collaborative working relationship.

As a good steward of public resources, the board of library trustees is making several exterior improvements to the library campus, totaling about $950,000.

In consultation with Mayor Jeff Schielke and the City Council, the library trustees had requested that the city’s TIF fund provide a $100,000 grant to support the cost of one element of that overall project – the widening of the stairway at Wilson and Water streets.

The stairway improvements nicely complement the city’s previously completed streetscape improvements on West Wilson Street by improving pedestrian and visual access to the library. Furthermore, the use of TIF funds on public infrastructure projects (such as the library’s project) is allowable under state law and has recent precedent in Batavia.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

After receiving a positive reaction from the City Council, subsequent conversations made it clear that a majority of the aldermen had reservations about one or another aspect of the grant request – whether regarding the funding source or the merits of the project. Therefore, the library respectfully decided to withdraw the request for a TIF grant and is proceeding with the project using its own funds.

Looking toward the future, there is a need for further improvements to the library campus and its neighborhood. For instance, there is a need for pedestrian and aesthetic improvements on Water Street from Wilson to First Street. The library is required to follow the city’s lead in this project; however, the library board pledges to work in collaboration with the City Council to develop a mutually agreeable plan for infrastructure improvements to Water Street – and fund it.

Bulldogs respond to advance to regional final

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – After an early mishap that led to a goal against, the Batavia girls soccer team was in complete control of its Class 3A Hoffman Estates Regional semifinal against Glenbard North.

Karina Rosales scored twice and added an assist as the Bulldogs cruised to a 4-1 victory to advance to Friday’s regional final.

“We were confident in creating our chances, so we knew if we kept at it, we would get chances,” Rosales said.

Batavia (14-3-4) will take on Conant for the regional title, as the Cougars took care of host Hoffman Estates, 5-1, in Tuesday’s first semifinal match.

Jenny Scara misplayed a ball that allowed Glenbard North’s Emily Dybowski to put the ball in an empty net just seven minutes into play, there was very little panic from Batavia.

Coach Mark Gianfrancesco said conceding a goal early was almost a blessing in disguise early in the playoffs. Playing from behind allowed him to see how his team responded, which he thought was very strong.

“We know there’s going to be times in the playoffs where you are down,” Gianfrancesco said. “It was great to see how the girls reacted, and I think it was important to have a game like tonight. We didn’t get the tying goal right away, but I was happy that we stayed composed.”

Although the score showed a deficit for the Bulldogs, they dominated play from start to finish. Possession was in their favor for most of the night, which helped with confidence knowing that goals were going to come.

After Rosales opened the scoring on a cross from Kayla Stolfa, the senior forward got an assist on Mackenzie Foster’s goal just four minutes later.

“At halftime, Jennison was just saying that we really needed to keep pressuring and stepping more and coming out quicker,” Kolb said. “In the second half, we knew we had to put more away and that’s what we did.”

Not to be outdone, Carranza scored her second two minutes later, then made an

attacking run around the left side of the 18-yard box and fired another ball on net, striking an Elk Grove defender’s hand.

Carranza’s perfectly placed penalty kick made it 5-0 as she calmly sent the ball toward the far post while catching the Elk Grove keeper leaning the other way.

“I think it was just my day,” Carranza said. “Everything seemed to be working out for me and I was in the right place at the right time and finished my opportunities.”

In the 50th minute, Gatehouse made sure the defense got on the board, floating a ball from about 28 yards out into the upper far corner of the net to put the Saints up by six.

Kyla Augustine’s shot from 15 yards out in the 63rd minute soared high over the bar, but Sonia Ost put away a loose ball a minute later to cap the scoring.

North Stars spread wealth in regional opener

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The St. Charles North girls soccer team earned its 10th shutout of the season Tuesday night by blanking Rolling Meadows, 7-0, in the first semifinal match of the IHSA Class 3A Geneva Regional.

The North Stars will play the winner of tonight’s contest between Geneva and Lake Park on Saturday for the regional crown.

“Our defense starts with our offense, with our forwards, and that helps [our] midfielders step up, as well,” North Stars coach Ruth Vostal said.

“I was pleased with our back line and with Shelby [Stitz] and Leanne [Stahulak] back there [in goal]. They anchor our defense, communicate and often times stop the play before it even gets started.”

The senior forward upped the score to 2-0 at the 17:43 mark, scoring in front of the net as Mustangs goalkeeper Kelsey Nallon tried to clear the ball from the box.

“The ball was bouncing in the box and [it] was just the extra effort of getting your foot ... on it,” Durocher said.

“I thought our girls played hard in the first half,” Mustangs coach Mike Drenth said.

“The first goal of the second half kind of broke our back, but to their credit they never quit.”

“That’s been a massive plus for us,” Jennison said of the growth and elevated play of his underclassmen. “Obviously, we’ve been missing a couple of our seniors over the last couple weeks and I think for a couple teams, that would certainly hurt. Now we’re looking forward to having a full roster to pick from; the competition for play is higher than ever so we’re going to go into practice tomorrow and hope that all of the girls are fighting for a spot on Friday.

“Competition breeds success, so we’re looking forward to getting in there and enjoying another day together.”

Aurora Christian summer basketball camp Aurora Christian boys basketball coach Pat McNamara will direct a summer camp for boys entering grades three through nine from June 15 to 19, splitting up into two sessions.

The camp will be held at Aurora Christian, 2255 Sullivan Road, Aurora.

Session 1, for those in grades three to six, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

Session 2, for campers in grades seven to nine, goes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $99, and includes a camp T-shirt.

The camp day will feature warm-up and stretching exercises, offensive fundamentals, shooting drills, ballhandling fundamentals and contests.

3 on 3 “Stopper” games and 5 on 5 team games also will be held.

STREAMWOOD – Its roster might look a little younger this season, but the St. Charles East girls soccer team took a big first step toward its goal to get back to the Class 3A state finals Tuesday night.

Freshman Chantel Carranza had a hat trick, sophomore Hannah Kolb scored twice and the Saints advanced to Friday’s Bartlett Regional final with a 7-0 dusting of Elk Grove Village.

East (20-1-1) scored five times in the second half at Streamwood’s Millenium Field, setting a torrid pace after Kolb and Carranza scored three times in the first four minutes.

Saints coach Paul Jennsion said he expected nerves to play a minor factor in getting the first game out of the way, but was pleased with the result, particularly the second half.

“We were coming in here

and obviously you’re going to be facing a little bit of nerves,” Jennison said. “But the message was, ‘Enjoy this. You’ve been doing a decent job all season and there’s no need to change anything now.’ It was nice to get the first half out of the way since we definitely looked a little more relaxed and we were able to move the ball better in the second half.

We connected passes and the girls up top weren’t quite as static, so they did a good job.

I was very impressed with the second half.”

The Saints didn’t waste much time getting on the board, with Carranza scoring in their first goal four minutes into the contest off a corner kick from Julia Peterson.

Kolb got her first goal of the day in the 16th minute, heading in a cross from Julia Herbrand.

The Saints were stagnant for parts of the remaining 24 minutes in the first half, but kicked things into high gear after intermission.

Surging Saints clinch share of River title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Clinging to a one-run lead against Geneva after five innings Tuesday, St. Charles East softball players chanted something that typically heard from the trailing team.

“One, two, three, GET IT BACK!” the Saints screamed, moments after the Vikings struck for their two runs of the game.

Indeed, East ultimately answered the rally in a 4-2 win, earning at least a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title. While the chant didn’t will an insurance run in the top of the sixth, it explained the team’s morale behind using it in the first place.

“We’re always in it, always wanting to get ahead and always wanting to stay ahead,”

A home win against Elgin or a St. Charles North loss to visiting Larkin today would give the Saints back-to-back outright conference titles.

The Vikings committed seven errors to zero for the Saints (26-4, 18-2).

“They are a consistently good team, and I thought it was a good game all-around,” Geneva first baseman Annika

Radabaugh said. “I think we had some plays, some errors, that could have been avoided, but it happens. And I just think it was a very good game overall. They did a good job with their infield; they have a very solid infield. And with the bats.”

Since midseason, a slight tweak to the Saints’ defensive alignment has sharpened what already projected as a season strong suit.

East coach Kelly Horan moved Evansville-bound senior Olivia Cheatham from shortstop to second base, a position at which she excelled earlier in her career.

She also shifted Rinker, who Horan praised as “a jack of all trades,” from first base to shortstop.

“I’ve played short all my life, and I’m used to it,” Rinker said. “I love the position.”

Jordan Hall, in turn, appreciates the way she can exhale no matter who is positioned behind her.

Excelling behind her change-up, Hall mixed speeds and pitched to contact, scattering two walks and two strikeouts.

“You’ve got to focus in just knowing it’s a good hitting team,” Hall said. “You’ve just got to bear down, throw strikes.”

East showed plenty of patience in facing the offspeed arsenal of Geneva’s Rachel Fanella.

A two-run third featured a run-scoring sacrifice fly from third baseman Alex Latoria and an RBI single from designated player Catherine Crossen. Jordan Hieber singled in a run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Although Geneva countered with a two-run fifth on

RBIs from Radabaugh and Kaitlyn Plocinski, stranding the bases loaded in the first inning and two more runners in the third added up.

To coach Greg Dierks, those woes stung to nearly the same degree as the uncharacteristic defensive miscues.

“We either didn’t move the runners or we didn’t come up with the two-out hit or whatever we needed. … We had them on early in the innings and just didn’t get them in,” Dierks said.

Horan still cited Geneva’s improvement from the teams’ May 1 meeting, a 6-1 Saints victory in St. Charles.

“I think if you count who actually made contact with the ball, it would be even,” she said. “Because they hit the ball, we hit the ball. We just made the plays defensively, and that’s just characteristic of a championship team.”

‘New challenge’ awaits departing Casey

RHF seeks volunteers for August event

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Discussing his decision to move on as coach of the Aurora Central Catholic program, Brian Casey saved his most important football-to-family parallel for last.

Casey called his wife, Erin, his senior captain and referred to the couple’s 11½-month old, son, Parker, as the quarterback.

Make no mistake, football still will stir Casey as he transitions to the role of alumni relations director at his alma mater, Montini. He simply won’t be beholden to the season’s rigorous hours.

“Obviously, it stinks when you’ve been at a place for nine years,” Casey said, “and you’ve, in essence, grown up as a professional. … But here I am, now 31, and with the opportunity for a new challenge.”

Casey joined ACC as its admissions director before earning further responsibilities as an assistant athletic director in 2007 and ascending to head

Under his direction, the Chargers rekindled the program’s bygone winning culture, snapping a 14-season playoff drought in 2012 and leading ACC to three successive postseason berths.

The team finished 25-23 during his five-season tenure.

“Wins and losses, certainly they stand out,” Casey said, “but I look at the relationships that I built and developed and continue to form. That’s the piece that I’ll miss the most,

is those individuals and those players.”

Casey said the path to his new position “wasn’t a long process.”

He acknowledged the unfortunate timing with the school year drawing to a close and summer football camp approaching, but in the next breath reiterated that this is school personnel decision season, too.

Calling his time with principal Fr. William Etheredge and the rest of the ACC community “terrific,” Casey will remain on staff through late June.

Should ACC athletic director Sean Bieterman consult him about a possible internal candidate or on any other facet of the coaching search, Casey will be happy to help.

“If needed, I would certainly offer what I could,” Casey said, “but I’m confident that he is certainly capable of making sure the program is well looked after, well taken care of.”

Casey is a 2001 Montini graduate.

SUGAR GROVE – Rich Harvest Farms is seeking volunteers for the Western Golf Association’s 2015 Western Amateur, to be held at the course from Aug. 3 to 8.

The event features 156 top amateur golfers from around the globe.

What has been key to your success on the mound?

I’m just a competitor more than anything. I just focus on throwing strikes and knowing I have a great defense behind me. I think that’s really key, too. It’s easy to pitch when my defense has been as good as it’s been all season.

What’s it like to accomplish that in your last high school season?

It’s big time. Being a four-year varsity player, we have gotten better each year, so it’s sort of like a ‘startedfrom-the-bottom’ type thing. But winning the conference championship is a pretty special feeling.

With the playoffs right around the corner, does the mentality change when the season could be over with one loss?

We’ve had a motto all season of ‘one-track mind.’ Our goal has been to get to state and win a state title.

I think there’s a little more pressure, but I don’t think we will feel it that much. We have bought into ourselves and into this team so much that we know if we play our game we have a great chance to reach our goal.

If you could be a professional athlete in any sport besides baseball, what would it be and why?

That’s tough. I’d probably say football. I’d want to be a quarterback because they get all of the publicity.

They make a lot of money, too, so I wouldn’t complain about that, either.

St. Charles North senior and Kansas State baseball commit Cory Wright was dominant again on the mound against Batavia last week, as he as been all season. Wright, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, is 8-0 this season and has allowed one run all year. Feeling-out phase ending Unfamiliar opponents adjusting

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Nashville Predators offered few surprises to the Blackhawks.

The Minnesota Wild offered even fewer.

As Central Division rivals, the Hawks knew their first two playoff opponents all too well, and preparation was more about reminders than research.

But entering the Western Conference final, the Hawks hadn’t seen the Anaheim Ducks in more than three months, had played them just three times all year, and had never faced them in a playoff series.

So much of Game 1 was about the teams feeling each other out, and getting a sense of how they play, who they play, and where they play.

“We hadn’t played them in

a while, and we hadn’t played a game in 10 days,” Hawks winger Andrew Shaw said.

“We were just getting our legs under us. [Now] we know what they’re capable of. We know they’re a good team, a team that can score, and can shut down defensively, as well. Everyone just needs to amp it up.”

That’s what Game 2 is for.

For unfamiliar opponents, that’s when it really starts to feel like a series, when trends and narratives and rivalries form.

That said, any adjustments over the course of the series will be minor.

The Ducks will hit, the Hawks will skate, and the best team will win.

“We’ve looked at all their games – an awful lot of their games – from the whole course of the year,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said.

“They’re not going to make any drastic changes, because I think what they do works. …

ADVICE Mom fears news of abuse will cause split with son Dear Abby: My daughter, “Meg,” was sexually abused at the age of 3 by her father 25 years ago. “Emile” and I were divorced, but he had every other weekend visitation.

After we made countless trips to the children’s hospital and numerous therapists, a judge allowed supervised visitation. It happened again, but Emile told the judge he was “putting medicine on her.” He remarried shortly after and lost interest in Meg and her brother, “Ian” – who was a blessing to me – but he’d visit with them occasionally.

Emile spent years belittling me and telling lies to the kids about me, but I stayed busy with two jobs and raised them by myself.

Meg has no relationship with her father, but her brother does.

Ian is now expecting a child and knows nothing about the abuse his sister suffered.

I’m afraid if I tell Ian, it will cause a breach in our relationship

Coffee has health benefits but is not without risk Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard that coffee is good for your health – but I’ve also heard that it increases your blood pressure and heart rate. What’s true?

Dear Reader: Right now, the evidence I’m aware of points to health benefits for most people from regularly drinking coffee.

I’m talking about straight coffee – minus the cream and sugar.

Straight coffee is a nearly calorie-free beverage brimming with antioxidants. There’s evidence that drinking coffee might help prevent Type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. And studies show lower rates of gout and liver disease among regular coffee drinkers.

Caffeine, a plant-based substance that stimulates the brain and nervous system, is by far the most studied compound in coffee.

(It’s what provides your morning jolt.) But coffee is a complex brew that contains hundreds, if not thousands, of components.

Among these are vitamins, minerals, and potent, plant-based anti-inflammatory compounds known as polyphenols.

Most likely, it’s the combination of these substances, rather than caffeine alone, that account for coffee’s potential health benefits. Why do I say that? For

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff one thing, decaf coffee appears to have the same ability as regular coffee to reduce blood sugar and decrease insulin resistance. On the flip side, people who get their caffeine from sodas and energy drinks do not see any cardiovascular benefits.

At the same time, you’re right to point out that there also are some potential health problems with coffee. In some people, caffeine causes daytime jitters and sleepless nights. And caffeine does trigger a short-term rise in blood pressure and heart rate. But a moderate amount of caffeine is still OK for most people with heart disease. The exception is people with heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias).

In order to reap the potential cardiovascular benefits from coffee, you need to drink at least three eight-ounce cups of regular brewed coffee daily. Decaf is a good alternative for anyone who needs to steer clear of caffeine.

These include pregnant women and anyone with an arrhythmia.

Just avoid the fancy, su-

per-sweet coffee shop confections that more closely resemble dessert than coffee. These coffee drinks contain a lot of added sugar and too many calories. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a graphic showing the amount of calories, fat and sugar in an average coffee drink from a popular coffee chain.)

The best health option is to prepare your own coffee. Use a brew or drip method and a paper filter. Adding a small amount of sweetener and some low-fat milk is fine if you need to take a bite out of the bitterness.

I’ve given this assessment of coffee to enough of my patients that I know the statement can be misunderstood. So: • Drinking coffee regularly is not so powerful that it will protect you from unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

• You don’t need to drink coffee to remain healthy. As we often talk about in this column, there are plenty of other ways to protect your health than a regular cup of java.

Girls realize it’s a ‘man’s world’ Dr. Wallace: My sister and I have decided that we really do exist in a “man’s world.” We have two brothers, and all four of us have some “chores” to do. In the summer the boys cut the grass, and in the winter they shovel the snow off our sidewalk. And that’s all they ever do – they have no other chores to do, and we girls think this is very unfair. My sister is 14, and I’m 16, and our brothers are 13 and 15.

We girls do the dishes after every meal. We also help clean the house, take care of the dog, fold and put away the laundry and cook meals if our mom has a meeting to go to. We girls have to be home every school day 15 minutes after our last class while the boys have to be home “before dinner.” We girls are often late for our piano lessons because “there’s no hurry.” But our dad makes sure our brothers are always on time for sports practice.

We love our parents, but we can’t convince them that we are not getting a fair deal. Help!

Your comments will be appreciated. – Father, Riverside, California Dear Father: This is a very difficult question for me to answer, but I’ll give it a try. If the school offers the same sport for boys and girls, then the girls should play on the girls’ team and the boys on the boys’ team, regardless of the skills of the athletes.

In cases where a sport is offered to only boys – football, baseball (not softball), wrestling, etc., then girls should have the right to try out for the team and to be honestly evaluated on their skills.

And the same should be true for the boys. If a sport is offered for girls and not for boys (possibly softball, field hockey, water ballet, etc.) then boys who possess sufficient skills should be allowed to try out for these teams and be honestly evaluated.

However, you must remember that few girls will ever become starters on an all-boys team. And if boys would be allowed to play on all-girls’ teams, the team would eventually be male-dominated, thus denying girls the opportunity to compete.

As a former varsity head basketball coach, I witnessed a wonderful growth in girls’ athletics to the point that now the number of high school girl athletes matches the number of boy athletes.

When a bridge defender is threatening to do something dangerous to your contract, you should try to find a way to defend yourself. In this deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the spade jack. East wins with his ace and returns the spade two. How should declarer continue?

West did not have the greatest one-spade overcall, because his suit was not that robust. But it pays to bid spades. If you find a fit with your partner, the opponents have to go up to the next level to outbid you.

Over two hearts, South might have rebid three no-trump. Then North would have been in a quandary. With four trumps, it would be normal to choose the major-suit game. But the three low spades suggest no-trump because maybe East can get a spade ruff or two. How can three no-trump by South be defeated?

In four hearts, South should realize that East is now out of spades. If East gains a ruff, that and the three missing aces will defeat the contract. The only way to avoid the spade ruff is for South to take his three club tricks, discarding his last spade on the third. Then he can overruff East.

Against three no-trump, if West leads the spade jack, East must win and shift to a diamond; not easy to find.

Use the bidding to work out the distributions of the opponents’ hands.
