uring my visit last week to Marklund’s Hyde Center, a home for severely disabled adults in Geneva, I was amazed at the amount of volunteers who were there to help the clients as they participated in Arbor Day

VFW post finds new home in St. Charles business district

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 has a space to call its own nearly a year after selling its Third Street property to the city.

The organization recently moved into a suite at 311 N. Second St. in St. Charles’ central business district.

The space is labeled as the Veterans Center.

“We’ve been in here about two and a half months,” Dick Leckbee, junior vice commander, said Thursday.

The VFW had been sharing space with American Legion Post 342 on North Fifth Avenue since it sold 119 N. Third St. to St. Charles last summer, Leckbee said.

The city demolished the building built in the 1950s to make way for a public parking lot.

VFW considered a space on Main Street, but parking – along with traffic – was an issue.

“We felt this was an ideal spot right here,” he said of the suite a few doors down from the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau and across the street from Salerno’s On the Fox. Although the space isn’t as large as the VFW’s former home, Leckbee said it has ample parking and good visibility from Second Street.

The VFW plans to install flagpoles in front once the property owner gives the OK, he said, adding that should help attract even more attention to the center.

Leckbee, who was in the Veterans Center on Thursday mopping floors and

straightening chairs, said the organization hopes to start holding regular office hours from about 3 to 7 p.m.

“We’re always looking for new veterans,” Leckbee said.

The VFW holds its business meetings at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, with dinner served at 6 p.m. The AMVETS use the space for business meetings at 7 p.m. every first Wednesday. The VA Health Van visits Post 5036 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

The VFW will open its new home to all veterans, Scouts and their families on May 26, immediately after the Memorial Day parade and shrine festivities, Leckbee said.

County Bar Foundation hosts student mock trials

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Dozens of students will get some experience handling cases in court today, thanks to the Kane County Bar Foundation.

The foundation’s Law Day Mock Trial Program will be held at the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, St. Charles. The trials will begin at 11:30 a.m. and are open to the public.

Students from six area schools, including Batavia High School, will compete against each other playing the role of either prosecution or the defense in a hypothetical burglary case. The students on each team will get to play either the role of an attorney or witness, and will get to learn the Illinois Rules of Evidence and criminal procedure.

“It’s exposure for the students to how our system of justice works,” said Mike Doyen, president of the Kane County Bar Foundation.

About 72 students will participate in the program, Attorney Dewey Hollingsworth said. There are typically two attorneys for each team with their own witnesses and also a group of students that participate as jurors.

Students have been hard at work since they were assigned the trial problem March 26. They also were told which side, prosecution or defense, they should prepare for.

Batavia High School is scheduled to compete against Bartlett High School.

Other participating schools include Aurora Central Catholic, Elgin Academy, St. Edward Central Catholic

and West Aurora High School.

Local attorneys and judges from the community will participate by offering critiques and guidance as to what it is like to be a trial lawyer.

The program is usually held on a day near Law Day, which is May 1.

The trial program was first offered about 35 years ago by the Kane County Bar Association, Hollingsworth said.

Then the Kane County Bar Foundation, an Association affiliate, became the sponsor of the program by the mid1990s.

Hollingsworth said one or more of the foundation team members were mock trial high school participants themselves in the late 1990s and 2000s.

“We believe in the program and intend to continue to support it,” Hollingsworth said in an email.

More prison time for man guilty of selling stolen car

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A man already serving prison time for burglarizing cars parked at a St. Charles gym has been sentenced to another 10 years for a felony involving a stolen Corvette, according to Kane County court records.

Daniel Kellogg, 39, pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle.

As part of the plea agreement accepted by Judge John Barsanti, related charges – including some about forged

documents – were dropped, records show.

Kellogg, who once rented a house in Campton Hills, stole his landlord’s 1990 Chevrolet Corvette and sold the sports car to a dealership, police have said. Records show he Daniel must serve 10 Kellogg years in the Department of Corrections for the crime. He also must pay $850 in fines and costs and $31,525 in restitution.

Kellogg also is serving a

five-year sentence for burglarizing cars parked outside XSport in 2010.

Police said he gained access to the vehicles by taking keys from the front desk key basket.

Kellogg, however, eluded authorities for more than a year, dodging that prison sentence. An anonymous tip in January 2013 led to his arrest in St. Charles, and a Kane County jury convicted him of felony escape earlier this year.

He was sentenced to a year of conditional discharge, records show.

GENEVA

Man pleads guilty to aggravated battery

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva man, who has been charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, pleaded guilty Thursday to one of the charges in court, records show.

Herman Little, 28, of the 100 block of North Sixth Street, also was charged April 17, with two misdemeanor domestic battery charges in Geneva.

The second felony and two misdemeanors will not be prosecuted if Little fulfills the terms of his probation by April

29, 2016, records show.

According to court records, Associate Kane County Judge Thomas Stanfa assessed him a fine of $1,570 and 24 months of probation, requiring Little to report to court services. Stanfa Herman also sentenced Little him to 15 days in the Kane County Jail with credit for time served. Little has been held in the jail without bond since his arrest, records show.

According to police reports,

Little and the victim, who was five months pregnant with his child, were arguing and went outside so as not to wake a daughter who was sleeping.

Little allegedly grabbed the victim by the neck and pinned her against the door. She freed herself and called 911. Little went to slap the phone away, but missed and hit the victim in the neck, instead, according to police reports.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Some school districts get library grants The Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and West Aurora school districts were among 656 public school districts recently awarded library grants from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who also serves as state librarian.

The grant amounts by town were: Batavia – $4,608; Geneva – $4,365; St. Charles – $9,888; and West Aurora – $9,138. “The school library is a place where children have access to resources and opportunities for achieving academic excellence,” White said in a news release. “I am proud to award this grant to ensure our school libraries stay vital and relevant while educating our students.”

Grants were awarded based on a formula of 75 cents per student, with a minimum grant award of $750.

The state’s School District Library Grant program is used to acquire fiction and/or non-fiction books, educational CDs and DVDs and library subscriptions to electronic resources, and to improve technology by purchasing new computers or improving Wi-Fi connectivity.

St. Charles businesses pay for late-night permits

T. CHARLES – Many St. Charles businesses this month agreed to pay the increased price of staying open late.

A total of 24 establishments applied for a late-night permit to stay open past midnight, according to city records. Of those businesses, 16 of them applied for a 2 a.m. permit.

This is the first year the city has implemented a latenight permit system. The new rules were the result of talks that began with former St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte about over-serving alcohol and police calls for rowdy downtown activity.

The St. Charles City Council on April 21 unanimously approved the 24 permit requests in advance of the new liquor license year, which began Thursday.

“We said it would be a brand-new year, and everybody starts fresh,” current Mayor Ray Rogina said. “Everybody got what they wanted with respect to the time.”

Bar owners and managers said they really didn’t have a choice to change their hours if they wanted to maintain their business. There was no question Ray’s Evergreen Tavern, at 1400 W. Main St., was going to apply for a 2 a.m. permit, manager Melanie Hesenflow said.

If customers saw an earlier closing time at Ray’s, they would leave early and spend most of their night elsewhere, or not come in at all, Hesenflow said.

“It’s quite a difference from last year ... for the same liquor license we’ve always had,” Hesenflow said.

This year, Ray’s liquor license cost $1,200, but the cost of the yearly permit to stay open until 2 a.m. was $2,300.

This brought the total to $3,500, a $900 increase over what was paid for the license last year before the permit system.

In contrast, the other latenight permit option of 1 a.m. would have cost $800 in addition to the $1,200 license cost.

That was the intent of the permit system – to get businesses to choose the 1 a.m. option,

Rogina said.

Regardless of how late the businesses stay open, Rogina said the city will remain vigilant with problem patrons at night. The goal is to see a reduction in police calls, he said.

“We want downtown to be a fun place to be – we’re not looking to change that,” Rogina said. “We’re looking to

change the overexuberance.”

The businesses continue to use existing protocols to curb bad behavior. Employees at Ray’s will call cabs for patrons and pay for the ride if necessary, Hesenflow said.

Customers can leave their cars in the parking lot if they give the business advance notice.

Hesenflow also keeps in

touch with other bars if they have a difficult customer headed toward downtown, and vice versa. The doormen at the Beehive Tavern and Grille, at 204 W. Main St., know which folks have a reputation or those that have been banned from other bars, Beehive co-owner Steve Baginski said.

Baginski notes that businesses serving alcohol already pay a 2 percent liquor tax implemented by the city.

He was not pleased with the cost of the late-night permits, but sees no other alternative.

“To be a competitive business, you got to pay it,” Baginski said of the permit fee. “So we do.”

AURORA – As part of his annual State of the City address May 1, Aurora Mayor Thomas Weisner announced the 2014 summer lineup of concerts and events at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway, Aurora.

“We’ve raised the bar for the park’s sophomore season and look forward to welcoming thousands of people from across the Chicagoland area, who will discover all that RiverEdge Park and downtown Aurora have to offer,” Weisner said in a news release.

GENEVA – Gardenology – all things gardening – will take over downtown Geneva 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 from the Kane County Courthouse on Third Street to the Metra station.

More than 50 garden experts will give presentations or answer questions under a tent at the Geneva Lutheran Church, 301 S. Third St., to help patrons get the most out of their gardening season.

Gardenology advisers and vendors will bring their best ideas and garden-related products to jump-start this year’s gardening season. Experts in various horticulture fields including farming, landscape design, weavers, local nurseries and more will be available to answer questions.

Topics include herbs, flowers, vegetables, heirloom plants and perennials, attracting birds and butterflies, wildlife control, composting, organic fertilizers, how to grow a crystal garden and making salad dressings among others.

The event is free – unless you buy something, said Glorianne Campbell, secretary of

the Geneva Garden Club, one of the main sponsors of the event.

“I think we’re more and more interested in our environment and our gardening, whether it’s a little pot on the patio or a full vegetable garden,” Campbell said. “There is interest in that and this is a way to give more information to people.”

The speakers tent provides information from planting vegetables to harvest to cooking, Campbell said.

“And it’s a fun day to come to Geneva and learn some things in the process,” Campbell said. “There are things for kids as well as adults.”

The garden club will be selling garden gloves, she said, with proceeds going to support scholarships in horticulture and for replanting trees in the city.

In addition to the speakers tent, plants and accessories will be available for purchase, and shops will be offering activities and attractions for children.

Good neighbors THE WASHINGTON POST The Supreme Court considered two cases this term in which somewhat unclear wording in the federal Clean Air Act left sensible environmental rules open to challenge.

On Tuesday, in the first case, the justices rightly sided with the sensible rules.

In Environmental Protection Agency v. EME Homer City Generation L.P., a 6-to-2 majority upheld EPA rules designed to stop groups of states from contributing harmful ozone and particulate air pollution to downwind neighbors.

The agency’s “Good Neighbor” provision comes directly from the Clean Air Act, which obliges states to limit emissions that “contribute significantly” to pollution problems elsewhere. The EPA has been trying to apply that language for two decades. Its latest attempt, dating to 2011, divvies up required emissions reductions among states based on the amount each pollutes and on the cost each would have to pay to cut cross-border emissions. No state, then, would incur unnecessary and excessive costs.

The EPA, in other words, sensibly figured that a polluter’s emissions are “significant” to regulators inasmuch as they are solvable. That approach, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in the majority opinion, “is an efficient and equitable solution.”

It is efficient, she explained, because the

government can get its emissions reductions “at a much lower overall cost” than from alternatives. It is equitable because the “EPA’s rule subjects to stricter regulation those states that have done less in the past to control their pollution.” A proposed alternative, Justice Ginsburg explained, relies on “a method that works neither mathematically nor in practical application.”

Critics have contended that the text of the law requires the EPA to regulate irrationally, without weighing costs.

That would be a more reasonable conclusion if the statute were clearer.

But, Justice Ginsburg wrote, nothing in the text requires a different result, which gives the EPA some legal flexibility.

A legitimate exercise of federal power is preventing states from dealing direct harm – in this case, air pollution – to others in search of advantage – in this case, economic development. The EPA found a reasonable way for the agency to exercise the authority Congress delegated it.

The court was still considering another case of awkward wording in the Clean Air Act, on the EPA’s efforts to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Yet Congress issued the Clean Air Act so that the government would have ongoing, comprehensive and full authority to address serious air pollution problems.

As with EME Homer, the court must keep that in mind.

This issue is not just about hospitals. It’s also about roads, schools and public safety. With-

out the continuation of current tax revenues, these areas will be subject to severe cuts in funding. We all have witnessed first-hand the needed improvements in these areas. We have much work to do to improve the lives of all Illinoisans, which calls for stable, predictable state funding.

Deciding to support a continuation of current tax rates is difficult. But taking the easy way out today will only make tomorrow’s problems worse. We need to keep our promises to Illinoisans to keep our state safe, well-educated and healthy.

There is no silver bullet. It

takes tough decisions and sacrifice. That’s why the Illinois hospital community supports taking this action. Now is the time for political courage and statesmanship – making tough decisions for tough times.

We ask Illinois state lawmakers to vote “yes” to enact a fiscal 2015 state budget that maintains current tax rates. Our future depends on it.

ATAVIA – Batavia brands its student sections as “The Dog Pound” in a nod to the school’s alliterative nickname, Bulldogs.

Apart from the occasional spirited barking of football players, perhaps no athletic team personifies the moniker better than the boys tennis program this season.

Batavia returned each of its top 11 players from 2013, but instead of forging ahead with the status quo, coach Brad Nelson conferred with athletes about some role reversals. The result isn’t particularly different than past seasons. The Bulldogs may have changed positions in the lineup, but they’re equally fierce.

“I think we can all play pretty well together after a couple of matches under our belt,” senior Jeff Lorden said.

“So I think it was just figuring out who we were going to play with, and then once we figured that out, we could just start working together.”

Lorden played No. 1 doubles alongside junior Adam Maris last season. The duo helped Batavia to a second straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division team title before losing a state qualifying match to IMSA at a daunting West Aurora Sectional.

Coupled with a handful of other close sectional calls that ultimately produced zero state qualifiers, the result weighed on the shuffling.

So, too, did the conference landscape. Knowing St. Charles North was especially strong in doubles, the Bulldogs moved former top singles player Ryan Sterling alongside Maris, while grouping Lorden with junior Josh Boyle in the second doubles slot.

“That’s what we looked at going into the year.”

North visits Batavia on May 8 after edging fellow contender St. Charles East, 4-3, last month. The Saints topped the host Bulldogs, 4-3, on Tuesday.

Entering Saturday’s Huntley quad, Batavia’s four doubles pairs are a combined 59-7.

Each of the top three groups – including the No. 3 team of sophomores Andrew Nelson and Emerson Hinzy – have at least 17 wins, helping the Bulldogs to three straight weekend event victories.

While East’s doubles split went a long way toward its dual win, the top two tandems held serve.

Friends off the court, Sterling and Maris hardly doubted that reality. They

aren’t cut-ups, but they hardly get particularly down on themselves, either.

“I don’t think I will ever get too tense, even if we were playing in the best, most prestigious tournament in the world,” Maris said. “He always is going to make me laugh, or sometime during the match. It’s easy to play with when you have someone who makes it that easy. And he’s skilled, so it takes a lot of the pressure off.”

Senior Tim Murat, who climbed from second to first singles after Sterling’s change-of-scenery shift, still acknowledges some anxiety.

Batavia drew many of the same teams as last season in the May 24 Waubonsie Valley Sectional. Still, Monday’s 4-3 victory against one of them – traditional Suburban Christian Conference power Mar-

mion – boosted the Bulldogs’ confidence about stacking things up for state.

“It’s a little bit more pressure on us, and it’s more motivation that everyone wants to end their senior year strong,” Murat said.

“Losing a decent chunk of our starting lineup [after this season], we want to go out with a bang.”

Murat calls Nelson’s coaching approach “more heavily mental this year” as some athletes blend singles principles with doubles, or vice-versa.

However they line up, the Bulldogs always have one thing in mind, and it speaks to their strategic nature.

“Make sure we’re playing steady from the back,” Murat said, “and then take our opportunities when they’re there.”

“Baseball, like they always say, is a game of adjustments, and waking up early, I mean, it’s not that bad, in my opinion,” catcher Ben Carhart said. “We get home early, so you get to go to bed early. There’s no difference in my eyes. Some people don’t like it, but I personally don’t mind.”

Cory McKay admittedly lacks a “great winter spot” to store and maintain the Chevy Caprice he races in Sycamore Speedway’s Late Models series.

That hardly fazes the 24-year-old from the Valley View area of St. Charles, who prefers to keep his focus away from stock cars for most of the offseason.

McKay placed third in Saturday’s feature as the Cory McKay Speedway opened its 51st season of racing, and he hopes to keep climbing as the sights and sounds of the track infuse him anew.

“The last month or so, you start getting antsy about getting back into it and start thinking about it,” McKay said, “making sure you’ve got all the stuff that you need.”

Kaneland 4x800 shines in debut Kaneland finished with the fastest boys 4x800-meter relay time in Illinois during Saturday’s home romp at the Peterson Prep Invitational.

Seniors Luis Acosta, Kyle Carter and Nathaniel Kucera – returners from last season’s 2A state champion relay – competed with junior Andrew Lesak for the first time this spring. The result: A meet-record run of 7:50.27.

“I’m excited for this group. Just keep on going,” Kucera said. “I think we’ve got a lot more left. I’m excited to see what we can do.”

Kaneland will compete in today’s Crystal Lake Central Invitational and a dual Tuesday at Marmion before launching into the May 9 Kane County boys meet at Streamwood.

Acosta (Western Illinois), Carter (Southern Illinois-Carbondale) and Kucera (Stanford) are NCAA Division I recruits.

“We have been pretty confident in what we could do,” Acosta said. “We haven’t ran this fast all year, but we knew what we were capable of, and we were really looking forward to [Peterson] the whole time. We knew [runner-up] Yorkville was pretty good, [third-place] Batavia. We had all the people to just chase them.”

And then some. In the 45th running of the Peterson meet, the Knights set a new 4x800 standard by 5.03 seconds.

Saints’ Shead comes unshackled Jordan Shead flanked former teammate Britney Williams as part of St. Charles East’s 3A state champion 4x400 relay last spring.

While the team undoubtedly misses the multitalented Williams, her graduation also allowed for growth. Coach Tim Wolf has especially seen that in Shead, a Notre Dame commit who set new program records in the 200 and 800 last week.

“I tend not to try to go back too far, but Britney was always kind of a big motivator for those kids,” Wolf said.

It’s all falling in favor for Blackhawks

On paper, everything’s coming up Blackhawks. Of the eight teams left in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Minnesota Wild have the longest odds of winning it all, according to Las Vegas bookmakers.

But while the draw is opening up for the Hawks after their grueling first-round victory over the St. Louis Blues, this second-round series won’t be a gimme.

The Hawks largely sleepwalked through a five-game victory over the Wild last spring in the first round, but this year’s model is deeper, more experienced and better.

Here are three X-factors that could decide this Western Conference semifinal series:

Quoteworthy: “In the last game [against St. Louis], we killed off a bunch of big penalties to pretty much win that hockey game, and then our power play comes out and scores a big goal, so special teams is important,” goalie Corey Crawford said. “There are huge momentum swings in the playoffs when you take a penalty, and then you get it back when you kill it.”

Garden party to benefit hospice KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice will host its a Garden Party for its annual fundraising event.

The event will take place Friday, May 16, at the Q Center in St. Charles.

The event will feature a fashion show highlighting spring fashions – from casual to dressy – and is being produced by Jeans and a Cute Top Shop in St. Charles.

There will be 21 “Basket” showcases – themed groupings of items, gift certificates and services – including the “Apple of My iPad,” “Fantasy Getaway,” “Outdoor Adventure,” “Home Office” and “Patio Plea-

sures.”

The day will also include an expansive silent auction, offering items such as toys, jewelry, massages, wine tastings, lodging and sporting-event tickets. A complete list of all of the silent auction and basket showcase offerings will be posted online a week prior to the event.

A gourmet lunch will be served, and the Aurora firemen will conduct a live auction, which will include a Luke Bryan signed guitar and a week-stay in Marco Island, Fla. There will be an online auction for a premier parking spot just steps from the Garden Party entrance.

The auction runs at noon through Monday, May 12.

Geneva Beautification Committee recruiting gardeners KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Beautification Committee is recruiting gardeners of all ages to join in garden preparation and the second planting of the season.

Interested new volunteers should report to the corner of South Third and James streets – in front of the Geneva Post Office – at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 17.

Volunteers will be given a garden location that could use some help. Volunteers who have already been assigned to a garden can report directly to their garden and begin planting the flowers that have been delivered to their area.

Volunteers are asked to bring garden gloves, pruning

shears, rakes, brooms, shovels and trowels.

Planting will continue, unless there is a thunderstorm.

If rain delays the planting, the rain date will be Sunday, May 18, at 12:30 p.m.

Volunteers win CASA scholarships KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – CASA Kane County has awarded its Dottie Lowe Scholarship to three CASA Guardian ad Litem program volunteers so they can attend and benefit from the national CASA’s annual conference in Grapevine, Texas, in June.

The three volunteers who were chosen are Joyce Bowie, Gail Garrity and Jill Bartnicki. Bowie has been in the CASA Guardian ad Litem program for one year and believes that participation at the upcoming conference, meeting other CASA volunteers and hearing their experiences will give her insight and knowledge to strengthen her role as a child advocate.

Garrity was an advocate for seven years and recently returned after retiring from her position as a business manager.

Bartnicki also is new to CASA Kane County with one year of service under her belt.

The Dottie Lowe Scholarship originated with a grant from the Hanson/Furnas Electric Foundation that made a donation to CASA Kane County in memory of Dottie Lowe in 1999.

This year, CASA Kane County was fortunate to be able to choose three deserving volunteers due to the National CASA Association offering an early registration discount, states a news release.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. The group is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who are appointed by the juvenile court judge to advocate for children ages birth through 21 in the Juvenile Court system.

Toyota Sienna faces stiff competition Toyota’s Sienna, Honda’s Odyssey, Nissan’s Quest, Dodge’s Grand Caravan and its company stablemate, Chrysler’s Town & Country, dominate the domestic minivan market. For those five, market share is 80 percent.

Others in the sales competition are the Nissan Quest and the Sedona, a Kia product that left the market in 2012, returned in 2013 but will be replaced by a new seven or eight-seater this fall.

These minivans share a purpose and that is to be capable of hauling lots of people (seven or eight) and cargo around, whether it is a load of children to soccer games or a family on an extended vacation. They do the job well. They differ in trim and, perhaps, an oddity or two, but basically they are the same animal.

Powerplants get fair gas mileage (15 to 30 miles per gallon), rear seats perform tricks (disappear into a floor, can be removed or reversed), side doors slide open and close by power, and cargo capacity either doubles or comes close to doubling that of a sport utility vehicle.

A recently tested Toyota Sienna is a good example.

Cargo capacity is 150 cubic feet behind the front seat after the third row is lowered into a cavity and the second row is adjusted forward. As the second row slides back and forth, entry to the third-row seating area is easy.

The two captain’s chairs in the second row come with foot rests (lever operated) so one can put ones feet up, recline the seatback and take a snooze.

This is a Toyota quirk and so is a split front-seat center console. The rear of the console can separate from the main storage unit and slide backward on a track to accommodate anyone sitting

It is incumbent on a potential buyer to research or have a dealership explain what these gems are. Dodge allows

the center console to be removed on its Grand Caravan, for example.

Manual sunshades for second and third row windows are offered on the Sienna, as they are on the Odyssey.

The 2014 Sienna’s 3.5-liter, dual overhead cam, 24-valve, 266-horsepower V6 engine is mated to a shiftable six-speed automatic transmission. The tested product averaged 19.3 miles per gallon with three and four persons aboard in combined city and highway driving (conservative). Regular gasoline is recommended

for the 20-gallon fuel tank.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the tested all-wheel-drive, 4,735-pound Sienna’s fuel usage at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

The front-wheel-drive Sienna is rated a bit more economical as the EPA gives its numbers as 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Weather, vehicle and road conditions and driver habits contribute to the mpg. The competition will fare little better, if at all, in mpg results.

Although the Odyssey may get slightly better fuel usage,

Sienna has the stronger (by 18 horsepower) engine. At 283 horsepower, the Chrysler products are even stronger.

Across the competition, engines are capable of towing a 3,500-pound trailer.

The Sienna is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.7 seconds (one person aboard), which is good for a heavy minivan. Distance covered when braking from 60 mph to 0 mph is about 130 feet, which is comparable to the competition.

A 3.5-inch, color-information panel also serves as a backup camera. The display includes outside temperature, time and weather and can disclose driver habits (Eco for economical can pop onto the screen), fuel economy history, average or instant fuel economy figures and the distance that can be traveled before the gas tank is empty.

Cruise control, defoggers, intermittent wipers and three-zone air filtration and climate controls are standard.

The Sienna is big and roomy and, with roof rails

overhead (crossbars cost $165 on the XLE), can carry bulky, outsized or a normal amount of cargo.

To the left of the tilt leather-clad steering wheel is the door to a storage bin that includes a coin holder (shaped to store quarters, dimes, nickels). It is accessible and easy to reach even while driving and approaching a toll booth or a drive-in facility that encourages small change.

Riding on 18-inch alloy wheels supporting P235 tires, the cabin is relatively quiet.

Road and engine noise do intrude.

Interior roominess and comforts, especially in the second and third rows, are a major virtue of this vehicle.

The suspension system is typical for a minivan with struts, twist-beam axle, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and stabilizer bars.

Standard safety features include stability and traction controls, an antilock braking system, air bags in front,

front sides, driver’s knees and overhead for three rows, headrests complementing seat belts (pretensioners in front) for seven occupants, tethers and anchors for child seats and child-protecting sliding door locks.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance, five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

The Sienna was redesigned recently, which indicates the minivan probably will look and perform like the 2014 model. But, designers always keep watch on the competition and any nuance that looks like a winner probably will be incorporated into the latest product.

Trim elements are similar among competitors, too, and the more you pay for more expensive models, the more you get. Pricing starts at $27,000 for the Sienna and can cross the $38,000 to $40,000 threshold, but that’s with larger wheels, an upgraded sound system and

extras, such as a third row that powers into the storage cavity or upright into a seating opportunity.

The tested Sienna was an XLE with an asking price of $36,185.

It included fog lights in front, heated front seats and leather trim for all three rows.

The XLE included the usual power features.

But the exterior mirrors were heated; the power windows (express in front, not in the second row) included the vent quarter glass in the third row; the side doors and liftgate opened and closed by power controlled by a key fob.

If you sat down at “Fading Gigolo” without knowing anything about it, you’d no doubt think you were watching a new Woody Allen movie.

It’s all about love and sex and insecurity and jealousy; there’s jazz spinning through the soundtrack; men and women tend not to understand each other’s motivations; and one of the lead characters is an older, very talkative Jewish fellow from Brooklyn who’s, by the way, played by Woody Allen.

But this was written and directed by, and co-stars John Turturro, who is no doubt a big fan of Allen. No, this is not a Woody rip-off. Turturro manages to get his own creative voice in there, playing a likeable if confused character who just can’t figure out how to play the cards that life has dealt him.

He’s Fioravante, a nice guy who’s eking by as a part-timer at a flower shop. His best friend is Murray (Allen), who has just been forced to shut down his once successful book shop.

Murray is a family man, but Fioravante is alone. Both men are a bit lost, both are trying to figure out what to do next.

What they come up with sounds, at first, pretty far-fetched. Murray’s wealthy, married dermatologist, Dr. Parker (Sharon Stone), casually mentions she’d like to try a three-way.

Business-minded Murray thinks he might be able to set something up, for a lot of money, and feels that Fioravante might be the right guy to get involved in this “business.”

Murray is a man with amoral tendencies, and he hatches a plan to become his lonely pal’s pimp. The three-way goes by the wayside, but Murray finds that a lot of women who happen to have a lot of cash are interested in a safe little fling with an OK-looking, energetic nice guy.

Never mind that Fioravante has no self-esteem, and doesn’t even think he’s attractive.

But while that story gets cooking, another one begins, again with Murray at the center. He needs some assistance from his late rabbi’s beautiful, deeply religious, and still-grieving young wife Avigal (Vanessa Paradis), a woman who, it’s said by others in

Maybe, suggests Murray some massage therapy would help, and maybe Fioravante is the guy to provide it.

Don’t bother trying to figure out where all of this is going, because while the pimping business grows and the money starts flowing in, and while Avigal considers taking that advice, the action goes back to Dr. Parker, who has told her excitable friend Selima (Sofia Vergara) about her time spent with the stud she’s been hiring.

This news, wouldn’t you know, interests Selima.

But even that story doesn’t get to develop much before another plot strand is introduced, one about Dovi (Liev Schreiber), the Chassidic leader of the local neighborhood patrol who is becoming concerned that Avigal has started leaving her house, is dressing more fashionably, and is smiling as she travels somewhere with an odd little man named Murray.

This is a sweet and funny film with some serious issues going on at its core, a couple of almost surreal and ridiculous moments about a Jewish “trial,” and a few really moving scenes that ring true concerning human nature.

It’s aimed at a sophisticated adult audience who will understand that the characters are all good people and are all worth caring about.

There are wonderful performances by everyone, with Allen, Schreiber, and the French actress Paradis standing out. Turturro turns in a typically fine role with his Fioravante, but it’s his script and direction that should really be noted.

The script doesn’t reveal much of what’s going on behind closed doors, leaving us to wonder about much of that.

And Turturro likes to let cameras linger on people’s faces, in those cases letting us wonder what they’re thinking about.

It turns out to be a very romantic film featuring all sorts of lonely people who are keeping their hopes alive.

A very nice move on Turturro’s part is that he gives it a gentle ending that closes off a couple of stories while, at the last moment, opening up another one.

For low back pain, find a mattress that works for you Dear Doctor K: I have chronic low back pain. What type of mattress should I use?

Dear Reader: Considering that we spend roughly a third of our lives lying in bed, this is a very good question. And you’d think medical science would have a very good answer.

I asked my colleague, Dr. Jeffrey Katz, professor of medicine and orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School, for his thoughts. He noted that there’s not a great deal of research on this topic, but a few studies offer some guidance.

In the past, doctors often recommended very firm mattresses for people with back pain. These are sometimes called “orthopedic mattresses” because they were widely recommended by orthopedic surgeons when I was in medical school. That was at a time when virtually no research had been done on the question.

Doctors simply had opinions – sometimes strong opinions.

And sometimes the worst kind of strong opinions: wrong strong opinions.

Dr. Katz cited one study in which 313 people slept on a medium-firm or firm mattress for three months. Those with the medium-firm mattresses reported

Another report surveyed 268 patients with low back pain and found that patients sleeping on orthopedic (very hard) mattresses experienced the poorest sleep quality. But patients experienced no difference in sleep quality between medium and firm mattresses.

A softer mattress that conforms to your body’s natural curves may help your joints align favorably. “Memory foam” mattresses fit this description well. But you might also sink in so deeply that your joints twist and become painful during the night.

Dr. Katz usually advises his patients to try sleeping on many different mattresses and beds to see which type feels best. For example, if you spend a night at a hotel or someone else’s house, note how you feel after sleeping on the “new” bed. You might also try placing a plywood board under your current mattress to

dampen any movement from bedsprings. Or put your mattress on the floor to simulate the feeling of a firm bed. Before buying a new bed, go to a mattress showroom and try a variety of different models.

Finally, pay attention to your sleeping position. Sleep on your side if you can, and bend your knees toward your chest a bit.

Also, choose a pillow that keeps your head level with your spine.

Your pillow shouldn’t prop your head up too high or let it droop.

You asked what type of mattress is best for people with low back pain. My basic answer is: Try different types of mattresses and see which seems best for you.

You may be thinking, Dr. K spent all those years in medical school so that he could tell me that?

But all those years of medical training have taught me one thing. People are different. Studies tell us what’s best for the average patient in the study. But like the children of Lake Wobegon, you are certainly not average!

Dr. Wallace: Sara and I have been best friends ever since first grade and love each other like sisters. We do practically everything together.

We both had boyfriends and often double-dated until I broke up with my boyfriend. Dear Nameless: Milk is, indeed, the “perfect food.” It’s chock-full of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and is high in calcium. But whole milk has a very high fat content. Switch to skim milk. It contains all the good stuff without the not-so-good stuff – fat. Your coach is 100 percent correct.

Dear Abby: My wife and I both served in the military. When she returned from Egypt 19 months ago, she dropped a bomb on me, saying she didn’t want to be married anymore. She said she had settled for second best all her life and that’s what she had done with me. She went on to say she knows there’s someone better than me out there, and she’s going to find him.

All the evidence points to an affair, which she denies – constant trips out of town, emails and phone calls. We are now living paycheck to paycheck. To jump or not to jump?

This week, we have been studying strong jump shifts.

To check that you have the idea, look at today’s South hand. North opens one heart and East passes. What should South bid?

While you decide, I have said that a strong jump shift should promise 13-16 high-card points. In the days of yore, responder needed 17-19 high-card points. As I explained three days ago, this was not best. But if responder has a two-suiter, by the time he adds shortage points, his hand will probably be worth 17-19 support points: high-card plus shortage points.

In this deal, though, South must respond one spade, not two spades. Don’t make a strong jump shift with a two-suiter unless partner opened in one of your suits.

A sensible sequence is one heart – one spade – three spades – four no-trump – five diamonds – five no-trump – six hearts – six spades. It is difficult to bid seven no-trump (the best contract) or seven spades with confidence when a king is missing.

However, let’s assume that West leads the club jack against seven spades. How should South plan the play?

Declarer has 13 top tricks: five spades, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs. So, he does not need to risk the diamond finesse. He should win trick one in his hand with the club ace, draw trumps (leaving the ace or king in the dummy as an entry), unblock the heart ace and king, cross to dummy with a trump, and cash those lovely winners (the heart Q-J10 and club king), discarding his four diamond losers.
