Batavia man plans Jack Axe festival Event to be held in August at Kane County Fairgrounds

Now, the Batavia resident wants to show others how exhilarating and physically challenging the activity can be.

Klein is president of Jack Axe Inc., a new event planning agency, which will hold its first Jack Axe Games and Festival, set for Aug. 29 to 30 at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Participants will compete in such activities as axe throwing and a log carry, as well as sawing logs and a caber toss, which is a popular activity in the Scottish Highland Games.

“We are trying to get police departments and fire departments to compete against each other,” Klein said.

Those who don’t want to participate in the challenges are invited to watch the games, Klein said. Jack Axe also has partnered with

St. Charles-based Operation Warrior Wishes, which strives to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, and to provide direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

Geneva McDonald’s reopens after Saturday morning fire

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The McDonald’s restaurant on Geneva’s west side reopened for business Saturday afternoon after a morning fire shut it down for most of the day.

The McDonald’s at 1812 S. Randall Road in Geneva was back open for business at about 5 p.m. Saturday, according to a manager at the restaurant who declined to be identified.

Customers were seen entering the restaurant’s lobby and drive-thrus to place orders Saturday evening. No one was injured during the fire, according to a Geneva Fire Department news release.

The McDonald’s restaurant at 1812 S. Randall Road in Geneva reopened Saturday afternoon to serve customers after an earlier fire shut it down for most of the day. at the restaurant, the news release stated.

“The first arriving engine company found flames exiting from the roof of the building, and two employees waiting outside,” fire officials wrote in the release.

Firefighters determined the fire was coming from the exhaust hood and duct work used to ventilate the restaurant’s grill area, according to the release.

The building’s installed fire suppression system had acti-

vated, but the fire had moved up through the duct work and outside the restaurant, the release states.

Fire crews extinguished the flames within 20 minutes in both the grill and duct work, according to the release. Damage was contained to the vent system duct work and exhaust fan located on the roof, the release states. Firefighters remained at the restaurant to investigate the cause of the fire and confirm it was extinguished.

The Kane County Health Department and the Geneva Building Division also were requested to the scene, according to the release.

Batavia, Elburn and St. Charles firefighters assisted the Geneva Fire Department with the incident, according to the release.

Route 31 ‘road diet’ gets state revision

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The latest update on the “road diet” for Route 31 in Geneva is that the state is prepared to do the restriping, but with some modifications.

Geneva Director of Public Works Richard Babica said Monday at the city council meeting that the Illinois Department of Transportation modified the city council’s request.

“Unfortunately, we will not get everything we want,” Babica said. “We are getting it reduced to two lanes with a center turn lane median. It will address accident rates and speed issues we all heard complaints about.”

The road diet was proposed because the lanes on Route 31 are more narrow than standard road widths, officials said.

CHARLES – The mood Monday night was somber in the St. Charles City Council Chambers because of a vote to cut funding for groups that help bring people and revenue to the city. The city’s Government Operations committee Monday voted, 8-0, to recommend a 10 percent funding cut in response to proposed state reductions.

The funding affects groups such as the Pride of the Fox RiverFest, the St. Charles History Center, the Visitors Cultural Commission and the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Downtown St. Charles Partnership has a different funding source from a special service area, but its funding will also be reduced by 10 percent, City Administrator Mark Koenen said.

The city is proposing the 10 percent reduction, which would amount to $98,223, in anticipation of a reduction of tax revenue that the state shares – with municipalities such as St. Charles – from the Local Governmental Distributive Fund.

This cut would be a start toward having to offset a potential cut from the distributive fund that would amount to $1.6 million for St. Charles, Koenen said.

“I’m disappointed in the vote of the council,” said Amy Egolf,

the bureau’s executive director, Monday night. “The dollars that are generated on a local level by each one of our hotels don’t just fund the bureau … a significant portion of the hotel/motel tax goes into the city’s general fund.”

Egolf asked aldermen to maintain the bureau’s funding in part because it already cut $86,135 from its budget in anticipation of funding cuts from the Illinois Office of Tourism.

Egolf disagreed with Ward 3 Alderman Bill Turner’s suggestion that the bureau join forces with the downtown partnership and the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce. A similar effort in Champaign, was not successful, Egolf said after the meeting.

“The reason why we’re in the predicament in the first place is that the state didn’t plan,” Ward 4 Alderman Steve Gaugel said.

Still, officials wanted a letter to be sent to IDOT stating their opposition to the changes the state made to the city’s proposal.

The state also revised the tapers in the north half of the project area to between South Third Street and Elizabeth Place, officials said.

The restriping project coincides with the state’s project to resurface Route 31, officials said. Resident Robert Byrnes and Jeff Toland, building director for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1900 S. Batavia Ave., both

objected to the road diet plan.

“Applying the same solution to the whole road does not make sense to me,” Byrnes said.

Toland said the 300 employees of Houghton Mifflin were “totally against this.”

“We feel very strongly that this is going to cause issues with employees getting in and out of the facility,” Toland said.

“If there is too much disruption to our employees, we would look for somewhere else to go.”

Plans for brewpub in North Aurora set to move ahead

Village trustees on Monday briefly discussed the plans. Parker Grabowski, who owns the Turf Room in North Aurora, has applied for a special-use permit to build the Hardware restaurant at the northwest corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street in the Orchard Commons shopping center. He wants to open a full-service restaurant and brewery.

Trustees plan to vote on the plans at the next North Aurora Village Board meeting. Plan commissioners recommended approval of the plans with several conditions, including that a

According to a staff report from North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth, plans call for the construction of an 8,338-squarefoot brewpub, which would include outdoor dining.

The brewpub operation would provide product for the proposed restaurant, as well as for Grabowski’s other restaurants, Toth stated in

the report.

Grabowski intends to produce up to 3,000 barrels at the brewpub a year, Toth said.

Once demand exceeds a certain threshold, Grabowski plans to construct a separate microbrewery on adjacent land that would produce up to 12,000 barrels, Toth said.

All of the brewing equipment then would be moved into the microbrewery.

The microbrewery would include a tasting room.

Grabowski opened The Turf Room at 1033 Kilbery Lane, North Aurora, several years ago.

The St. Charles East High School senior’s affection for making things better is leading him toward a college degree in mechanical engineering, one of the broadest engineering disciplines.

Engineering is “kind of a theme in our family,” the St. Charles resident said, explaining his older brother and three cousins have or are pursuing degrees in that field.

On Sunday, Finke will be among hundreds of students graduating from St. Charles School District 303. East’s ceremony is set for noon at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

had his choice between six colleges. He narrowed the pool to four: Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, the University of Illinois, Purdue University in Indiana and Marquette University in Wisconsin. He has decided to enroll at Lehigh.

There, he intends to enter the dual degree program through the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences. He will study mechanical engineering and arts, architecture and design.

While Finke enjoyed his time at East – his activities included the National Honor Society, football, DECA and, as an underclassman, band – the teen said he is “definite-

He certainly has been preparing for it.

The summer before his senior year – months that also included football camp, club

lacrosse and two part-time jobs – Finke took algebra and trigonometry at Elgin Community College.

“No, I didn’t really have a summer,” he said, “but it was spent in a lot of different plac-

Finke continued his college experience this academic year by taking calculus courses in the fall and spring in addition to his classes – some of which were Advanced Placement courses – at East.

His motivation to enroll in college math classes included a desire to challenge himself and to make himself look more viable in a college setting, he said.

“I wanted to do more,” he said, noting there also is a better chance he will receive college credit from the ECC courses than through AP exams.

In an email, Finke’s AP Chemistry teacher, Diane Bearrick, described him as a strong leader in class whose enthusiasm was infectious.

“He is the rare student who takes a rigorous course load, is musical and a student athlete,” she wrote.

“His dedication to football, lacrosse, Boy Scouts, band, numerous honors societies, volunteer work and a part-time job have no doubt nurtured his patience and ability to work

Mooseheart graduate sets sights on the Navy

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Kamryn Kolb doesn’t know what exactly sparked her interest in pursuing a career in the Navy.

M a y b e it stemmed from her family’s involvement in the Kamryn Kolb armed forces, the 18-yearold said, noting she has a

grandfather who was in the Navy and an uncle who was in the Marine Corps.

All she knows is while other kids wanted to be doctors or nurses, she had dreamed of joining the Navy.

“That’s been one of my life goals,” Kolb said.

The Mooseheart senior, who is set to graduate May 30, hopes to make that happen.

On Aug. 22 she is set to report to the Virginia Military Institute, which is about an hour away from her hometown of Lynchburg, Virginia,

she said.

“I had to work my butt off to get in,” Kolb said, adding she also applied and was accepted to the University of Memphis. “But VMI is what I knew I wanted.”

There, she said, she plans to major in military history and study Arabic. She said she will have the rank of officer upon graduation.

“If I graduate from there, I’ll be good,” Kolb said.

Life at VMI will be structured – especially at first – but Kolb not only likes struc-

ture, she said, but her time at Mooseheart also prepared her for that.

Kolb came to Mooseheart as a sophomore because her circumstances at home weren’t the best, and her mother – a Moose member – thought the school would be good for her, she said.

“I was not happy about it,” the teen said.

Participating in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps – a requirement for Mooseheart students – changed her attitude, Kolb

said, noting NJROTC sparked her passion for structure.

As graduation approaches, Kolb said she is excited but also nervous and scared, as she will be thrust into adulthood this summer with a job and living on her own until moving on campus.

She will leave Mooseheart thankful of the opportunities it provided, including a stint at Yellowstone with the Youth Conservation Corps, and affection for those she lived with, she said, calling the house a home.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A Plano man has been charged with criminal damage to property after allegedly fleeing from police early Sunday through a golf course, residential lawns and a public park.

Christopher B. Stankovich, 44, of the 300 block of Dearborn Street, turned himself in at the North Aurora Police Department on Sunday evening, according to a news Christopher B. release from Stankovich the North Aurora Police Department.

He was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 4 felony and criminal damage to property, a Class 4 felony.

Police did not have an estimated damage amount. As of Monday afternoon, he re-

mained in the Kane County Jail on a $12,500 bond. Stankovich also has been charged with domestic battery, driving without headlights on, making an improper turn signal and improper lane use.

According to the release, the incident began at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday when police were on the scene on April Lane, investigating a domestic disturbance when Stankovich drove a maroon 1995 Ford pickup truck past with the headlights turned off, police said.

Officers caught up to the truck on River Road (Route 25) near the Fox Valley Country Club golf course, the release stated.

When officers signaled Stankovich to stop, he began driving recklessly as he pulled into the driveway of the golf course, police said.

Stankovich lost control of the truck and spun out in the grass, causing large divots, police said. The truck then fled through the golf course in a north-northwest direction.

Officers found Stankovich driving the truck on Slaker Court, and when he saw police again, he drove north between two houses, through Wingfoot Park toward Wingfoot Drive,

the release stated.

The truck was at Stankovich’s house in Plano about 30 minutes later.

The incident remains under investigation. Those with

information about the incident or those who have damage to their property caused by the incident are asked to call North Aurora Police at 630-897-8705.

“I was not surprised to learn that he was earning his Eagle Scout rank at the beginning of his senior year,” she wrote.

Finke recently was awarded the Gifted Talented Resource Group Scholarship and the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley River Scholarship Award. He is the son of Richard and Janice Finke.

Elburn OKs new contract for police ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board on Monday night unanimously approved a four-year collective bargaining agreement with the village’s full-time police officers.

The contract calls for fulltime police officers and sergeants to receive 2 percent raises for 2015 and 2016 and 2.25 percent raises in 2017 and 2018. According to the contract, 1 percent would be added to the base pay for all sergeants who have completed 12 years of service with the Elburn Police Department.

The contract was on the agenda for an earlier meeting in May, but there was no action at that time because it had not yet been signed, Village President Dave Ander-

son said after the previous meeting.

There was little discussion about the contract before its approval on Monday night.

Trustee Ken Anderson said he was supporting the deal and said it was good it was a four-year deal. He added he hoped police officers would work to build a positive image.

He encouraged officers to walk up and down Route 47 and engage with residents and visitors. Village President Dave Anderson said he had a similar conversation with Police Chief Steve Smith earlier on Monday.

The raises in the police deal will take effect on May 1 for each year of the contract.

This year’s deal is retroactive to May 1, as well. Starting pay for a patrol officer is $51,951

in 2015, $52,990 in 2016, $54,183 in 2017 and $55,402 for 2018.

Starting pay for a sergeant is $67,104 in 2015, $68,446 in 2016, $69,986 for 2017 and $71,561 in 2018.

Also on Monday night, trustees unanimously approved buying a new police squad car. The cost will be $35,961, which includes the purchase price of $28,125 from Greenfield-based Morrow Brothers Ford and also $7,836 in equipment from Radco Communications Inc. Smith said the car will be sent to Radco to add the equipment.

Smith said the village soon will have a swearing-in ceremony for a new full-time police officer, which he hopes will be at the next board meeting. Also, two new part-time officers have started.

CARL W. BECKMEN Carl William Beckmen, age 88, passed away at Michealsen Health Center in Batavia on May 15th.

He was born in Chicago on May 1st, 1927. Carl and his beloved wife Joyce; son, Keith; and daughter, Kimberlee were long time residents of Wheaton. He and Joyce retired to St. Charles.

Carl was the proud grandfather of Mary Kate Beckmen; and father-inlaw of Kathleen (Greenwald) Beckmen; fond uncle of Andrea Marek, Amy Towler Lamonica, Jeffrey Towler, Cameron Cobb; brotherin-law of Gary and Sue Towler and Cynthia and Dennis Kennedy.

Carl is remembered for his Naval service and his exemplary customer service for over 3 decades at Carl’s Auto Service in Glen Ellyn.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Carl William Beckmen and Elizebeth Ingeborg (Johnson) Beckmen; sister, Elisabeth Marek; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Marek.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Charles.

Batavia company paints guitar for The Who

BY ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – While Psychotic Air owner Mark Daniels didn’t catch The Who’s recent show at Allstate Arena, he does have one of the band’s guitars in his possession.

Daniels is custom painting a guitar The Who guitarist Pete Townshend will play at the band’s May 26 show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. After that show, the guitar will be auctioned off for charity, Daniels said.

The Who is on a 50th anniversary tour, and Daniels is in the middle of painting “The Who Hits 50” on the guitar.

The North Aurora resident said he is a fan of the band’s music.

This isn’t the first guitar he has custom painted. He also has painted guitars for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Pink and Judas Priest.

Daniels, who recently received the guitar, said he is just glad he has a few days to work on it.

“At least I have time on this one,” he said. “Usually, I get three days.”

He just started working on

the guitar, but he said it will be done and shipped by Friday. Painting the guitars can be challenging because he has

a limited amount of space to work with.

“There’s not a lot of room to do a lot of stuff,” Daniels said.

After he is done with the guitar, he will hand it off to somebody who will tune it.

Daniels said he doesn’t know how to play guitar.

“I wish I did,” he said.

Along with custom painting guitars, Daniels also does custom painting for cars and motorcycles. He has owned Psychotic Air for 10 years.

“We pretty much do anything with paint,” Daniels said.

He said he likes to put a smile on people’s faces, adding, “I like it when people see their stuff and are thrilled.”

Lindsay P. Anderson, 26, of the 900 block of Foxwood Circle, Geneva, was Lindsay P. charged SatAnderson urday with one count of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, both felonies.

Anderson was released after posting $10,000 bail, 10 percent of the $100,000 bond that was set after appearing in bond court Sunday.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 4.

Prosecutors allege that between April 1 and May 8, Anderson had sexual contact with the victim and that An-

derson knew the victim, who was younger than 18 at the time of the assault. When the victim’s parents learned of the alleged assault, they contacted East Dundee Police, according to the statement.

Geneva police took Ander-

son into custody Friday, the day before she was charged.

Anderson recently had been employed at Carpentersville Middle School, according to prosecutors. According to the school’s website, www. d300.org Anderson taught En-

glish as a second language, special education and math.

If convicted of the more serious charge, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Anderson faces a sentence of between four and 15 years in prison.

Man still in hospital after crash in Batavia

BATAVIA – The exact condition of a patient airlifted after a crash Saturday in Batavia was not specified Monday, but Batavia police officials did confirm he was stable at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Two others involved in the crash were taken to a hospital by ambulance after the crash Saturday afternoon, fire officials said. They were treated and released, Batavia police said.

The Batavia police and fire departments were dispatched at 3:54 p.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of South River Street (Route 25), in Batavia, for the crash, said Shawn Stephens, a Batavia Fire battalion chief.

The crash was between a car and a some type of sport utility vehicle, and each vehicle sustained front-end damage, Stephens said.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted for treatment by Lifestar helicopter, which landed outside the Batavia VFW Post, 645 S. River St., Batavia, according to Stephens.

The SUV driver was airlifted in part because it took about 30 minutes to extricate that person from the vehicle, Stephens said.

“It was hard to get [the patient] out,” Stephens said.

Two people from the other car were taken by ambulance to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening at the time of the crash, Stephens said.

Route 25 was shut down in the area of the crash for almost two hours after it happened, Stephens said.

The North Aurora and Geneva fire departments assisted Batavia fire crews with the incident, he said.

More than 4,000 attend Gardenology Something for Everyone: in downtown Geneva Park District Programs Serve Unique

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An event Saturday about all things gardening brought about four times more people to downtown Geneva than it did last year, one of its organizers said.

More than 4,000 people came to Gardenology near and along Third Street south of State Street in downtown Geneva, said Debbie Notaro, president of the Geneva Garden Club and part of the committee that organizes the event.

“We were very happy with the turnout, and I know the vendors were successful,” Notaro said Saturday at the end of the event.

About 50 vendors offered everything from microgreens to antiques and the event for the first time had a demo area outside the Little Traveler, 404 S. Third St., Geneva. The event had a smaller turnout in 2014 because of poor weather, Notaro said.

Gardenology is a fun family day that really tries to involve children because they are the next generation of gardeners, Notaro said.

At the Gardenology Children’s Activity Center, flower plantings and soil were donated by The Heinz Bros.

Children took home their plantings in pots donated by the event committee.

Geneva resident Lily Pierini, 10, took home a planting of violas from Heinz Bros., as well as baby kale sprouts from the Green Tomato Grocery Co-Op. Lily’s mother, Cheryl Pierini, said they come to Gardenology every year because they live nearby. Pierini this year was looking for perennials at the vendor booths for her garden.

In addition to vendors, other activities included a speaker’s tent, where Deb Krohn, also known as the The Frog Lady, had live reptiles and amphibians on display and on the lawn of the Geneva Lutheran Church, at 301 S. Third St. Some more four-legged creatures at the event included dogs brought downtown by their owners and two sibling Lamancha goats at the Rural Fabric booth.

Shabbona-based Rural Fabric owner Peg Feltes Dordal brought Petal, and her brother, Henry, to the event to show people a visual example of where goat milk used for her homemade soap products comes from.

The sibling’s mother, Coco, is actually the one that provides the milk, Feltes said.

Feltes said she has been a vendor at Gardenology for at least the past four years.

“These outdoor marketplaces are so fun – everybody learns something,” she said.

Sid Hendershott, a resident of Red Oak, Texas, made a return to Gardenology on Saturday after his last visit to the event a few years ago.

He was in Geneva visiting family.

Hendershott said as an artist, he enjoyed seeing colored tin flowers being sold at some of the vendor booths this year.

“It’s a beautiful city; I enjoy Geneva,” he said.

Police said Gainer also was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva because he had been hit in the head before police arrived. After he was treated, Gainer was taken to the Kane County Jail, Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in a email.

Griffeth and Gainer both were charged with resisting or obstructing a police officer. Gainer was released after posting bond.

Gainer also was charged with misdemeanor battery and held on the outstanding warrants. Records show Gainer is being held at the jail. Bond is set at $208,500 on all the charges against him.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Two men who were drinking together late Saturday began arguing and then fighting when police from four agencies were called to the scene on South James Drive in St. Charles Township, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and police from St. Charles, Wayne and South Elgin arrived shortly after 10 p.m. to a report of a fight in progress involving a large number of people, according to the statement.

David Griffeth, 35, of the 35W700 block of South James Drive, confronted a deputy and refused to comply with his instructions to lie on the ground, according to the statement.

Griffeth continued to yell at deputies and then took

an aggressive stance and attempted to charge at one of the deputies, according to the statement.

The deputy deployed a taser to try to stop Griffeth, but one of the darts missed, according to the David Griffeth s t a t e m e n t .

After the failed taser deployment, deputies took Griffeth into custody without further incident.

Driving into the future THE WASHINGTON POST In a limited sense, cars have been “driverless” for a long time – ever used cruise control? – but they are about to become far more capable, and soon, revolutionizing the way people get around.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx promised last week that the federal government will smooth the rollout of driverless vehicle technologies, removing unnecessary regulatory roadblocks and delays. But realizing the benefits of driverless technology will require more than smart regulation; companies and the government will have to convince the public that driverless cars are safe.

The possibilities are tantalizing. “Connected, automated vehicles that can sense the environment around them and communicate with other vehicles and with infrastructure have the potential to revolutionize road safety and save thousands of lives,” Foxx declared last week.

Cars are already rolling off assembly lines with smarter cruise control, automatic braking and lane-centering technologies.

In coming years, they will be able to do much more, such as directly pinging one another, which will combine with radar and laser sensors to make onboard computers hyper-aware of their surroundings. Driver error nearly causes all fatal crashes. Computers that never doze off or look down to text could save 30,000 lives a year.

Fewer crashes would improve traffic flow. So would putting an end to bottlenecks caused by rubbernecking. People could

reclaim untold hours now spent in start-and-stop frustration. Even when in their cars, they could devote time to productive or entertaining activities rather than dealing with the monotony of most commutes.

And they would burn less gasoline per mile traveled.

Those who have disabilities or who are too old to drive could get around far more easily. Car-sharing would be much easier, as well.

Parking could be better organized.

The technology that would enable all this is getting closer to prime time. Google announced Friday that it is ramping up the testing of its gumdrop-shaped, fully automated cars around Mountain View, California. At least as important, though, will be providing the transparency necessary to encourage public confidence. The company, one of many that has official permission to test driverless cars on public roads, reported earlier this week that its experimental vehicles have been involved in 11 accidents over 1.7 million miles traveled so far.

The company claimed that humans behind the wheels of other cars were at fault in every instance. But Google will have to provide as many specifics as possible as its testing intensifies.

State governments can help by verifying the claims companies make about driverless vehicle safety records.

Polling indicates Americans are intrigued by driverless cars, but there’s a lingering – and understandable – hesitation among many. Giving up control requires a major psychological shift. The sooner the technology is proven and trusted, the sooner the benefits will accrue.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Work to be done to improve education levels To the Editor: Graduation ceremonies are occurring, with one of the first having been at Northern Illinois University earlier this month.

Congratulations to all the graduates and their families. I am proud to represent NIU, our community colleges and educational interests in Springfield. Whether from high school or college, graduation marks a significant accomplishment that – according to statistics – will return huge financial dividends and societal benefits.

There have been multiple graduation classes since Illinois adopted its Public Agenda for College and Career Success, so it’s time to review the progress we have made toward our goal of 60 percent of the citizens with some

education beyond high school.

Several studies and President Obama point to the need for continued education to be prepared for the types of good-paying jobs that will be available in the next decade. Currently, only about 43 percent of Illinois residents have a certificate or education degree beyond high school.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education recently completed its assessment of our education progress, and – while finding Illinois has made improvements – we remain far behind the best-performing states.

Illinois is closing the high school diploma gap between whites and minorities, especially in Chicago. The gap between the races is widening, however, when it comes to education beyond high school, according to the

report. Illinois is making strides in increasing the postsecondary education of its young adults.

For older adults and especially low-income students, the improvement remains behind the national average and most other states. We must do better if we are to achieve the goal of economic growth and improved family incomes in our state.

If residents in Illinois are to be prepared for jobs of the future, we must redouble our efforts toward lifelong education and achieving the public agenda, which is online at www.ibhe.org.

More of us – at all ages – must be enrolled and graduating from a postsecondary education program.

If this sounds like a staycation, think again. It’s simply a Hirsch homecoming with a caveat.

A left-hander in the Milwaukee Brewers organization for almost a year now, Hirsch and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will be in town for a four-game series against the Cougars beginning Friday.

Stays of such length typically would all but assure Hirsch a start, but a roadblock comes in the form of recent tenderness in his pitching elbow.

“Not throwing this time,” Hirsch said, “but hopefully the next time.”

The Cougars and Timber Rattlers share the Midwest League’s Western Division, so Wisconsin will make three more visits to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark this season – from June 16-18, July 8-9 and July 18-20.

With respect to the buzz sure to swirl around Geneva during a potential Hirsch start, Timber Rattlers pitching coach Gary Lucas hopes Hirsch will be off the disabled list and in position to climb to Advanced-A Brevard County of the Florida State League in 2015.

“His character and makeup are through the roof,” Lucas said. “I’ve been impressed with him since spring training and how he’s gone about his business. And that’s where it starts. I know he’s had some arm issues in the past, but he’s on the mend now.

“He’s at that age we want to get him squared away and pass him on to higher levels, hopefully, before the year is out.”

Hirsch, 24, joined the Brewers as a 19th-round draft pick out of Nebraska in June 2014 on the heels of a resurgent senior season. Recovered from an injury to his non-throwing wrist that cost him the final 31 games of his junior season, he struck out 50 batters in 52 1/3 innings over 31 relief appearances.

Before the wrist troubles, Hirsch redshirted his first collegiate season following February 2010 elbow surgery, but had ascended into Nebraska’s starting rotation by 2012.

The Knights, who earned their third straight sectional team title, competed Friday at Hanover River Ridge, not far from the Illinois-Iowa border. Because River Ridge lacks a pole vault area, however, Guerra and Davidson traveled Wednesday to Freeport to vault.

HITTING REWIND Batavia and Kaneland both enjoyed banner weeks on the girls and boys side. Each school boasts a sectional champion girls team – the Bulldogs in 3A, the Knights in 2A – as well as boys teams with conference meet cachet.

In postseason, destinations equal paradise cities “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” was undoubtedly on the radio at some time when Russ Howard was notified about his first baseball regional umpiring assignment.

Howard got the assignment in 1985.

Now, 30 years later, the 71-year-old Huntley resident has been chosen to work the Class 4A Prairie Ridge regional beginning on May 25.

It’s like he’s a kid all over again.

“When you get notified, you get excited and there’s an inner glow about you,” Howard said. “You’re excited to be recognized, but at the same time you have to make sure you know all the rules, act professional and don’t go out there and show anybody up. The teams are probably glad to see you because they know they’re getting the best (umpires) out there.”

Howard has worked three state championship games, including Lockport’s 5-4 win against Schaumburg in extra innings in 1997. He also worked the 1996 and 2000 Class AA title games.

“It was a long time ago, but I played baseball in high school and college, and you get that same feeling when umpiring,” he said. “When you get to the state tournament you know you’re considered one of the top guys

The Class 1A and 2A assignments were announced last week while 3A and 4A were unveiled Thursday. It was quite the day, especially for the umpires who learned that they were selected to work a regional for the first time.

After seven years, Glendale Heights resident Ryan Mulcahy gets to extend his season to the Class 4A Geneva Regional.

“I was pretty surprised to get the news since I just got my ‘R’ (registered) this year,” he said. “I’m petty excited about it. “ Mulcahy logged into the IHSA website on Thursday, something he does regularly every couple of days, when he learned of his postseason assignment.

“I saw a new little section highlighted,” he said. “I clicked on it and saw I had an assignment, so I was

pretty excited about that.”

Feedback from varsity coaches has a huge effect on the postseason umpiring selection process. They are asked to rate the performance of umpires after each game during the regular season.

Assignments are based on many factors, including power ratings, which are determined by written exam scores, previous tournament experience, number of varsity games worked and the Top 15 list from assignors and schools as well clinics attended and frequency.

Regional-level officials must be in the top 50 percent of all officials in rule knowledge, physical appearance, mechanics and signals, positioning, game management, attitude, professionalism, consistency, judgment and reaction to pressure. Pretty darn comprehensive, isn’t it? Think about that the next time you whine about a borderline strike three call.

Elgin’s Fred Brach has been working just about every day the past 10 years and finally earned a regional. He’s traveling to Rockford Boylan.

“It’s been a goal of mine to get a regional, so I’m pretty excited,” Brach

said. “I had a great game (on Thursday) and my partner was excited for me. We work hard and want to get the calls right, so to see my hard work pay off is very exciting.”

Geneva’s Jason Santo was slightly surprised to get assigned. He received the Class 4A DeKalb Regional.

It’s his second postseason assignment.

“Last year I was taking master’s classes and me, my wife and son had just moved into a new home. I wasn’t working as many games, so I was surprised a bit,” Santo said. “This year I had a better idea and I just went out and did the best that I could.”

Santo then texted the news to his wife.

Texting was an unknown technology when Howard received news of his first regional 30 years ago. I’m sure he proudly shared the news with his family and friends, though, and was much louder than a “Careless Whisper.”

“It’s still fastball, curveball, changeup,” Hirsch said, “just hopefully a little better stuff than when I was in high school.”

That’s a bit of self-deprecation, of course, but working alongside Lucas has helped boost many intangibles, including confidence.

Predominantly a reliever during an eight-year Major League career with the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos and California Angels, Lucas earns distinction not just with his experience, but by being left-handed.

Hirsch admits “I haven’t had many” southpaw pitching coaches. His current one believes Hirsch will be in position to work with many others in the Brewers organization after beginning his pro career with Short-A Helena (Montana) in 2014.

“He’s ready to take off,” Lucas said. “He gets healthy here, I think that he’s on his way and can play catch-up pretty quick.”

North head coach Todd Genke and pitching coach Terry Ayers remain in touch with Hirsch, and even allowed him to use school facilities for a spring training tune-up earlier this year.

Hirsch spent the offseason in Nebraska, which figured to send a few more familiar faces to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark this weekend before his recent injury.

“I’m sure some of them will still come out,” Hirsch said. “It kind of stinks that I won’t be able to throw, but to me, obviously, the most important thing right now is to be healthy.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Geography, knowledge and luck are a big part of finding a treasure in an unexpected place, and at a low price. It happens. A number of years ago, a collector found a stack of five enameled ashtrays at an estate sale. The trays were artwork made by a friend, but they were out of style and of no interest to the heirs.

The collector asked the price and willingly paid the $5 for all of them. It was a number of years later that the name of the artist, Mildred Watkins (1883-1968), became nationally known. A small round silver box with an enamel picturing a ship in the center sold at a January 2015 Skinner auction in Boston. It brought $15,990, about three times the high estimate. Watkins’ name was well-known in Cleveland where she worked as a silversmith, jeweler and enamelist. She studied at the Cleveland School of Art from 1897 to 1901. She moved to Boston to study enameling, then returned to Cleveland and taught at the Cleveland School of Art from 1919 to 1953. She made enameled jewelry, boxes and ashtrays for local shops and shows. Today, the best of the five estate sale ashtrays is worth about $2,000 or more. The others should sell for $250 to $500. The collector found a bargain because she was informed. But living in the same city as the artist and being lucky enough to get to the sale early led to finding a treasure. *** Q: I have quite an extensive collection of American Brilliant Period cut glass that I started collecting when I was about 16 years old. I’m now 74. I know it has lost a considerable sum since the beginning of this century. Do you think the value of my collection will ever return?

A: The American “Brilliant Period” of cut glass was from 1876 until about 1910. The glass was “brilliant” because it was deeply cut and highly polished.

Colored cut glass was made from the early 1880s until about 1900. The most popular type was “colored cut to clear” glass. American Brilliant cut glass has gone down in value partly because copies now can be made today in Europe for much less money. The older, heavy-cut glass is out of style, perhaps because it requires hand washing. I wish I could see into the future, but so many uncontrollable factors influence price. An article showing a collection that belonged to a movie star or a sudden interest in elaborately decorated clear glass can raise prices. Like any antique, the prices may go up or down and it usually takes about 25 years for the price of a collection to recover from a loss. ** * Q: I have a small burl walnut cabinet with two doors. It has an inside drawer that is branded “Hekman.” The cabinet has metal loop door pulls. It’s 28 inches high and the top is 38 wide by 18 inches deep. What can you tell me about it?

A: Edsko Hekman was a baker who emigrated from the Netherlands to Grand Rapids, Michigan, hoping to fulfill his dream of becoming a furniture maker.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Grand Rapids companies had become leading producers of machine-made furniture and the city became known as “The Furniture City.” Hekman started out as a baker in Grand Rapids, selling cookies door to door, and started the Hekman Biscuit Co., which later became the Keebler Co. It was Hekman’s three sons who inherited his love of furniture craftsmanship and started the Hekman Furniture Co. in 1922. The embossed logo and slogan on your bank was used by Esso starting in 1934. The bank probably had a paper label band around it when it was new. Some of the labels encouraged saving to buy U.S. Defense Bonds; later labels encouraged saving for Christmas, vacation, new car, and clothing.

Your bank is from the early 1940s and is worth $40 to $75, depending on condition and clarity of the glass (some have yellowed). A bank with its label will bring a higher price. A glass block bank was also a popular souvenir at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. It has the same Esso logo on one side and the Trylon and Perisphere and “New York World’s Fair 1939” on the other. ADVICE Husband’s caring ministry doesn’t extend to wife Dear Abby: I have been married to the same man for 20 years. He likes having people around ALL the time, and because he is a minister, we often can’t avoid it.

I have tried to accommodate his friends and hangers-on, but lately it’s becoming unbearable. He will say “yes” to people who have been evicted, and I find myself sharing living quarters with perfect strangers.

I have tried over the years to make sense of his attitude toward me. I feel he cares for others and what they think of him more than what I feel or think. When I complain about his latest live-in’s attitude – or anything – he brushes every issue aside and basically tells me to be a good Christian.

Right now, we have a family of three sharing our three-room house with us and our three boys.

Most people think of colon polyps as a problem only for adults, but children also get colon polyps. In fact, they are a relatively common cause of bleeding from the rectum in children.

There are several types of colon polyps. Most are not cancerous, but some have a tendency to turn into colon cancer. Some people are born with a genetic tendency to develop multiple polyps.

Certain inherited conditions can cause hundreds of polyps to grow in the colon and rectum.

Two of these conditions, both of which are rare, are familial adenomatous polyposis and Gardner’s syndrome. A child born with one of these conditions definitely is at risk for developing colon cancer, even at a young age.

Children who do have such rare conditions may need to have their

Because these types of polyps are so rare, it’s unlikely that your son has to worry about cancer. It sounds like your son has a common juvenile polyp, and does not have one of the inherited conditions that cause multiple polyps and a high risk of colon cancer.

Most children with bleeding from the rectum should get a colonoscopy. During a colonoscopy, a flexible tube with a light and camera at the end of it is inserted through the rectum into the colon. The entire colon can be examined, just as is true with adults. If a polyp is spotted, it can be painlessly removed during the colonoscopy. The removed polyp then can be examined to see what type it is, and whether it might turn cancerous.

Even though polyps that can turn cancerous are very unusual in kids, they occur. In addition, if a polyp is not removed, it will continue to grow larger and may

bleed again. That’s why polyps, once identified, are removed.

Fortunately, you can help reduce your son’s chances of developing cancerous polyps in the following ways: • Increase his consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

• Limit his intake of processed red meats.

• Encourage at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days.

• Aim for him to maintain a healthy weight.

As your son gets older, stress the importance of not smoking, as it increases the risk of colon cancer.

It will also be important for your son to be regularly screened for colon cancer. His doctor should tell you how often he should have a colonoscopy.

It is scary to learn that your child has a growth in his colon.

Scarier, still, to learn that sometimes such growths can turn into cancer. However, the outlook is likely good for your son.

Mom wants to know everything Dr. Wallace: I’m now 17 and have been dating since I was 15. My mother has been giving me the third degree after every date for the past two years. She always waits up for me and then wants to know everything about our date, like where did we go? Where did we go afterward? Did we get a bite to eat? How much did he spend on me? Who else was there?

And the biggie: Did he get fresh?

I really hate this routine, and I just resort to telling her the minimal with little fibs because I don’t think she should be so nosey. What can I do to stop her from giving me the third degree every time I come home from a date? Please, please answer my letter!

When I called this guy and told him that if he didn’t meet my parents at least a day before the date there would be no date. I was really surprised and upset when he said, “Well, then you are the loser!”

Is his life so busy that he can’t spend a few minutes talking with your parents? His arrogance, not to mention his indifference, makes me think that you haven’t lost much.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, and I smoke a little bit of marijuana. My mom thinks that I’m surely going to be a drug addict.

She thinks that marijuana is just the beginning of a huge drug habit.

Please let her and other parents know that just because their kids smoke pot, it doesn’t mean they will become addicted to drugs. – Nameless, Portland, Maine Dear Nameless: It’s true that marijuana usage doesn’t necessarily lead to using other illegal drugs. However, marijuana has been described as a “gateway” drug. This simply means that most addicted drug abusers (cocaine, heroin, PCP, etc.) started out by smoking marijuana.

If today’s deal were played in a duplicate, there would be several different auctions, but the two most likely final contracts would be five spades by South (perhaps after the given auction) and six diamonds doubled by East, who refused to sell out to five spades because of his side’s double fit in the minors.

How should the defense go against each of those contracts?

West used the Unusual Notrump to show at least 5-5 in the minors. North’s jump to four spades was pre-emptive: long spades, weak hand. East had an easy five-diamond bid. But then, when South persisted with five spades, East probably should have gone on to six.

Although it would theoretically have been a phantom sacrifice (both five spades and six diamonds can be defeated), when one has a double fit, it usually pays to declare.

Against five spades, West leads the diamond ace. Since the queen is on the board, East plays the nine, a count card showing an even number. West cashes the diamond king. Now East, with attitude and count known, should send a suit-preference signal by dropping the two to ask for a club shift. Then five spades fails. But if West leads a heart or a third diamond, the contract makes.

To defeat six diamonds, South must cash two heart tricks – not so hard.
