More than 4,000 attend Gardenology

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An event Saturday about all things gardening brought about four times more people to downtown Geneva than it did last year, one of its organizers said.

More than 4,000 people came to Gardenology near and along Third Street south of State Street in downtown Geneva, said Debbie Notaro, president of the Geneva Garden Club and part of the committee that organizes the event.

“We were very happy with the turnout, and I know the vendors were successful,” Notaro said on Saturday at the end of the event.

About 50 vendors offered everything from microgreens to antiques and the event for the first time had a demo area outside the Little Traveler, 404 S. Third St., Geneva. The event had a smaller turnout in 2014 due to poor weather, Notaro said.

Gardenology is a fun family day that really tries to involve children because they are the next generation of gardeners, Notaro said.

One flown, two others injured in crash

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – One person was airlifted, and two others were flown to a hospital by ambulance after a two-car crash Saturday afternoon on Route 25 in Batavia, fire officials said.

The Batavia police and fire departments were dispatched at 3:54 p.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of South River Street, or Route 25, in Batavia, for the crash, said Shawn Stephens, a Batavia Fire battalion chief.

Feltes said she has been a vendor at Gardenology for at least the past four years.

“These outdoor marketplaces are so fun – everybody learns something,” she said.

Sid Hendershott, a resident of Red Oak, Texas, made a return to Gardenology on Saturday after his last visit to the event a few years ago. He was in Geneva visiting family.

Hendershott said as an artist, he enjoyed seeing colored tin flowers being sold at some of the vendor booths this year.

“It’s a beautiful city; I enjoy Geneva,” he said.

Two people from the other car were transported by ambulance to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening at the time of the crash, Stephens said.

Route 25 was shut down in the area of the crash for almost two hours after it happened, Stephens said.

The North Aurora and Geneva fire departments assisted Batavia fire crews with the incident, he said.

BATAVIA – Growing up in upstate New York, Eric Klein learned a lot about chopping up and cutting wood at his family’s cottage.

Now the Batavia resident wants to show others how exhilarating and physically challenging the activity can be. Klein is president of Jack Axe Inc., a new event planning agency, which will hold its first Jack Axe Games and Festival Aug. 29-30 at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Participants will compete in such activities as axe throwing and a log carry, as well as sawing logs and a caber toss, which is a popular activity in the Scottish Highland Games.

“There are a lot of guys that grew up watching this,” said Klein, who is a real estate broker. “We just want to have fun with it.”

Jack Axe also has partnered with St. Charles-based Operation Warrior Wishes, which strives to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, and to provide direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

GENEVA – The McDonald’s restaurant on Geneva’s west side re-opened for business Saturday afternoon after a morning fire shut it down for most of the day.

The McDonald’s at 1812 S. Randall Road in Geneva was back open for business at about 5 p.m. Saturday, according to a manager at the restaurant who declined to be identified.

Customers were seen entering the restaurant’s lobby and drive-thrus to place orders Saturday evening. No one was injured during the fire, according to a Geneva Fire Department news release.

The fire department responded at 4 a.m. Saturday to a report of a fire behind a grill at the restaurant, the news release stated.

“The first arriving engine company found flames exiting from the roof of the building, and two employees waiting outside,” fire officials wrote in the release.

exhaust hood and duct work used to ventilate the restaurant’s grill area, according to the release.

The building’s installed fire suppression system had activated, but the fire had moved up through the duct work and outside the restaurant, the release states.

Fire crews extinguished the flames within 20 minutes in both the grill and duct work, according to the release. Damage was contained to the vent system duct work and exhaust fan located on the roof, the release states.

Firefighters remained at the restaurant to investigate the cause of the fire and confirm that it was extinguished.

The Kane County Health Department and the Geneva Building Division also were requested to the scene, according to the release.

A damage estimate was not immediately determined on Saturday, the release states.

Batavia, Elburn and St. Charles firefighters assisted the Geneva Fire Department with the incident, according to the release.

North’s Amburgey ‘aggressive every point’

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – St. Charles North’s Aaron Amburgey convincingly handled Batavia’s Adam Maris to capture the Update Eight Conference No. 1 singles title Saturday, helping the North Stars earn their first boys tennis conference championship in four years.

Amburgey fully expected Maris to be looking back over the net at him, if he was going to be conference champ. Preliminary action went according to his calculations, and the first-singles championship pitted No. 2 Amburgey against top-seeded Maris.

Amburgey, who lost to Maris earlier this season and at last year’s sectionals, continually pressed the action with an aggressive approach and won the match, 6-0, 6-4.

“I wanted revenge against him,” Amburgey said. “… I could taste the revenge on the tip of my tongue. It drove me through the tournament.”

Amburgey topped Elgin’s Tommy Cruz, 6-1, 6-0, and Streamwood’s Chris VeltKamp, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to set up the showdown with Maris.

“Aaron played very well against a good player,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said of Amburgey’s championship victory. “Aaron was ag-

gressive every point.”

Amburgey’s triumph helped the North Stars capture the conference crown with 79 points. Batavia was second with 74 points, while St. Charles East took third with 69 points.

North Star duos at third and fourth doubles also earned conference victories, helping net the squad the conference title.

The North Stars’ David Montgomery and Dillon Randazzo won the conference crown at third doubles, while teammates Jack Callaghan and Alex Gruber took the title at fourth doubles.

For a someone who started

his career on the second rung of junior varsity as a freshman, Montgomery, now a senior, was proud to close out his high school career with a firstplace conference medal.

“This is really a great feeling,” Montgomery said, smiling. “The journey was worth it.”

Montgomery said dedication, great coaching and tennis lessons got him to the level he is at today.

Other top performances at conference included: • East’s Connor Anderson and Alex Winters taking the No. 1 doubles title.

• Batavia’s Josh Boyle taking the crown for second singles.

• Batavia’s Andrew Nelson and Nick Robinson earning the second doubles crown.

• East’s Charlie Downing winning third singles. “[Anderson and Winters] played well for the tournament. They were not the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament,” East coach Rob Livermore said of his top doubles team, which was ranked behind Geneva for the tournament.

Anderson and Winters needed a third set to knock off Batavia’s James Carr and Emerson Hinzy for the conference title, winning, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

“It was tough. It was a great test for us,” Winters said.

And there were positives to take. The Hawks outshot the Ducks (16-7 in a dynamite first period), out-attempted them, out-chanced them and outraced them for much of the game, particularly the first two periods. They kept Anaheim’s playoff-leading power play in check by taking just one penalty. And they withstood the bone-rattling physical play of the Ducks and the post-whistle skirmishes without doing anything foolish in retaliation.

The game plan was fine.

The execution left a little to be desired, however.

“It’s always a little frustrating when you don’t win,” Duncan Keith said. “We did a lot of good things, but at the same time, it wasn’t good enough.

Their goalie made some big saves, but I think there’s a lot of areas where we can be better.”

Indeed, there were plenty of negatives, too. David Rundblad, making his playoff debut in place of the injured Michal Rozsival, played a role in the first two Ducks goals – he was beaten at the blue line and then again in the blue paint on Hampus Lindholm’s goal in the first period (three minutes after Kane’s great chance), and his weak pass in his own zone led to Kyle Palmieri’s goal early in the second period, which made it 2-0. As expected, Joel Quenneville leaned heavily on his top four defensemen, playing Kimmo Timonen just 73 seconds in the third period.

The Hawks’ power play also was a major negative, coming up short on all three tries, including back-to-back chances early in the third period after Brad Richards’ steal-and-score in the final minute of the second period had cut the deficit to 2-1 and given the Hawks life. Nate Thompson scored the backbreaker five minutes later, and Jakob Silfverberg tacked on an empty-netter to seal it, as the Ducks’ depth – supposedly their biggest weakness in comparison with the Hawks – made the difference.

CARLYLE – Marmion’s sophomore bass fishing trio of Steven Callahan, Dennis Hayes and Daniel Lin was unable to reel in any keepers during this weekend’s twoday IHSA state tournament.

“It was still a great weekend,” Cadets coach Joe Large said. “A good learning experience for them. It was really great for the sophomores to get down there, learn some of the spots and gain experience. It was still very valuable.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Like he’s done to so many other goaltenders over the years, Patrick Kane had Frederik Andersen dead to rights – patiently swinging the puck out wide and pulling the Anaheim Ducks goaltender way out of position, where he fell on one knee and lunged desperately to his right with a wide-open net behind him.

Only, somehow, Andersen got the paddle of his stick on the puck just as he face-planted into the ice, deflecting Kane’s sure-fire goal high above the net.

“I thought I did everything right on the play,” Kane lamented.

That sequence early in the first period summed up Game 1 rather nicely, as the Blackhawks controlled play, peppered Andersen with shots, and still came up empty in a 4-1 loss.

Much of the credit goes to Andersen, who wasn’t even a lock to be the Ducks’ starting goalie entering the playoffs, but who made 32 saves to improve to 9-1 in the postseason.

It’s the first time this spring that the Hawks have trailed in a series, but the veteran team has been here before, and knows that if they keep playing like they did for most of Game 1, they should be in good shape over the long haul. Game 2 is Tuesday night at the Honda Center.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips school student, but it’s not easy for me. Studying is hard at home because I just want to goof off after a long day at school. My grades are OK, but I’m worried that if this continues they will slip.

Then there’s my eating habits and fitness.

My school lunch period starts late in the day, so it’s hard to stay satisfied from breakfast. When I get home, I’m still hungry and eat whatever’s around, not usually healthy. And sitting all day at school doesn’t help my fitness.

Recently, I decided to have only a cup of water or soda until dinner, but I’m not sure that’s healthy.

Exercising at home doesn’t happen because I’m either goofing off or doing homework.

Finally, there’s my sleep habits. I go to bed at 8 or 9, but I have to wake up at 5 the next morning. How can I have good grades, be fit and be rested while having fun, too? – Multi-Task-

When I received my wedding invitation last week, I was shocked and saddened. It was addressed to me and my kids only.

My significant other, “Greg” (the kids’ father), and I were married for 22 years and divorced three years ago. We have had some tough times but did reconcile. Even though we are divorced, we stayed together and never split households.

I have no idea how to tell Greg. I asked Carolyn if excluding Greg had been an oversight, and she said she would just prefer that he not be there. I can respect that, and I don’t want to cause any drama or take anything away from her day.

At the bridge table, you hope not to face overwhelming odds against making your contract.

(If you do, presumably partner overbid!) But it helps to know some common odds. If you are missing five trumps, the a priori odds of a 3-2 split are 67.8 percent, and 28.3 percent for 4-1. It is nice to find a line of play that will accommodate a 4-1 split, but if while trying to do that, you go down when the trumps are 3-2 all along, you will look pretty silly.

In this deal, should South, in four spades, worry about 4-1 trumps? West starts off with two high hearts.

The original declarer ruffed the second trick, played a spade to dummy’s king, and returned a spade to his jack. However, West won with the queen and led another heart, forcing South to ruff with his penultimate trump.

Declarer crossed to the dummy with a diamond and ran the club 10, but West won that trick and led his heart 10 to kill the contract.

South would have been making the winning play if East had queen-fourth of trumps, but declarer went down although trumps were 3-2. South should have led a diamond to the king at trick three, then taken the club finesse. West would have won and played a third high heart, but declarer could have ruffed, drawn two rounds of trumps, and played on clubs to get home.

When the defenders threaten to make you ruff a lot, establish your side suit first.
