St. Charles Ducky Derby headed to RiverFest WHAT: RiverFest and the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club will team up to present the second annual St. Charles Ducky Derby. From China to Tri-Cities, Scatterday and Kruse have been together, but now headed to different colleges

ATAVIA – In many ways, it only makes sense that Geneva High School senior Claire Scatterday and Batavia High School senior Lia Kruse are best friends.

Scatterday and Kruse were born in Fuzhou in Jiangxi Province, China, just three weeks apart and were both adopted Sept. 15, 1997, when they were 1½ years old.

They also shared a crib while they were living in an orphanage in China and have grown up only a few miles from each other.

“It is kind of a miracle,” Scatterday said. “We were meant to always be together and be best friends. We knew each other before we knew our parents.”

But for the first time in their lives, Scatterday and Kruse will soon be going their separate ways. Scatterday will be going to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, after graduating from Geneva High School this month, and Kruse will be going to Greenville College in Illinois after graduating from Batavia High School.

Even though they will be going to different colleges, they said they intend to keep in touch with each other.

“We will probably see each other on break,” Kruse said.

“We won’t let our friendship fade.”

Scatterday agreed.

“I’ll probably visit her, and she will visit me,” Scatterday said. “We grew up being best friends. Why would we let that go?”

They both attend First Baptist Church of Geneva and last year went on a mission trip together to Ecuador, where they built bridges and hosted a vacation Bible school for the children of nearby towns.

“It’s really cool,” Kruse said. “We go to the same church and always see each other.”

Because they look somewhat alike, they say they are often assumed to be related.

“People always ask us if we are sisters,” Scatterday said.

They also share a love for

sports, with Scatterday being a Viking gymnast and Kruse a Bulldog runner. But in some

ways, they are totally different from each other. For example, Scatterday is quick to

point out that Kruse enjoys shopping for clothes, but Scatterday doesn’t.

“We’re mirror opposites,” Scatterday said.

Scatterday said she knows the two of them will remain close even after they go away to college.

She is studying to be a physical therapist assistant.

Kruse wants to become a teacher.

“We thought we would be separated for life when we were adopted,” Scatterday said.

Their adoption also brought together the Scatterday and Kruse families. The two families got to know each other through the adoption process, and they traveled to China together to the orphanage where Claire and Lia lived.

“We met each other through a moms group that our adoption agency encouraged us to be a part of,” said Martha Scatterday, Claire’s mother.

Diana Kruse, Lia’s mother, said that Claire and Lia’s special bond was “divinely ordained.”

“There is no other explanation,” she said.

Martha Scatterday and Diana Kruse also maintain a strong friendship.

“We’re BFF,” Diana Kruse said. “We just went on spring break together in Florida.”

Ducklings rescued from sewer near Blue Goose

Ten ducklings sit in a box after St. Charles police officer Lisa Ferguson helped rescue them from a sewer Friday near the Blue Goose Market.

The city’s Public Works Department also assisted in the rescue.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As a rainsnow mixture fell Friday morning, St. Charles police officer Lisa Ferguson stood near a sewer grate, trying to reassure a duck whose ducklings had fallen through the gaps.

“I know, momma, we’ll get ‘em,” Ferguson said.

The 10 ducklings huddled together in the sewer, peeping, as their mother fretted and paced in a parking lot and grassy area near the Blue Goose Market. Employees of the downtown St. Charles grocery store had contacted the police upon the discovery.

“Our employees find everything,” co-owner J.P. Pearson said.

Although the ducklings were in arm’s reach of rescue, Pearson couldn’t save them because he needed the city to remove the grate.

Calls about trapped ducklings are not uncommon, Ferguson said, noting it happens a lot. She recalled other rescues she has participated in, including one that ended with releasing animals in a pond near Meijer on Randall Road.

Blue Goose employees helped Ferguson gather supplies necessary for the rescue, including a box to contain the creatures.

Public works personnel arrived with a crowbar and quickly uncovered the sewer, taking care to make as little noise as possible. Ferguson

Lying on her stomach, she reached into the hole for the ducklings.

Within minutes, the 10 ducklings huddled together in the container.

But their mother – who had stayed within sight of the sewer throughout the wait for public works – was nowhere to be seen. Other ducks arrived at the scene, including a female, but it was unclear whether it was the ducklings’ mother. As a test, Ferguson let one of the ducklings loose, and when the two came together, a second duckling was released.

“I say we walk the whole box down to the river so they don’t get run over,” Ferguson said.

The presumed momma duck followed community service officer Ryan Beeter – who

carried the ducklings – down Indiana Street toward the Fox River but flew away before reaching the bank.

Beeter released the ducklings under a deck near the riverfront, where he and others involved in the rescue hoped the animals would be safe.

“I know she’ll be looking for them, and they’ll be looking for her,” Otto said.

She said the ducklings’ peeping can only help.

“That sound they make is very important to the parent to find the young,” Otto said.

While baby ducks need their parents for some protection and to learn how to be a duck, Otto said they aren’t as helpless as other species are after hatching, such as robins.

“I think it’s harder on us than it is on them,” Otto said.

“We always look at baby animals as being helpless. …

Generally the parents and the young know exactly what to do, even though we think they have insurmountable odds.”

Former deputy clerk had been poised for ‘chief of staff’ post GENEVA – A former deputy clerk, who used the county’s email to do campaign work for Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s primary election campaign, had been poised to be promoted to a newly created position within the clerk’s office, records show.

Jeffrey N. Ward’s name is listed as “chief of staff” on 100 business cards that Cunningham ordered to be printed by the county’s Information Technology print office, according to records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. The cards were requested March 7 by Cunningham’s office.

Ward was suspended for five days after he sent a campaign-related email to the Illinois State Board of Elections on March 12. Ward no longer works for the office, having left the position April 1.

Ward, who was to be paid $11,298.42 in a severance agreement, did not return a voice mail message seeking comment. Ward worked for 17 months as a systems analyst at the clerk’s office.

Cunningham won his party’s nomination in the March 18 primary and will seek a fourth term in November.

Cunningham said he eliminated Ward’s position as a systems analyst during an office reorganization, and he said he ended up not pursuing the chief of staff position for Ward because of the cost.

“Salary – that was the

It wasn’t making sense.”

Cunningham said he was not sure that Ward knew he was being considered for a possible new position of chief of staff.

“Did he know? I don’t think so. I mentioned I might be reorganizing the office, but he never knew I had the cards printed up,” Cunningham said. “It was just one of those things. I had the cards printed up at no cost. I had cards reprinted for myself, too.”

Cunningham said other county clerk offices have both a chief of staff and a chief deputy clerk, but the Kane County office is too small for both positions.

“The functions can be handled by a chief deputy and secretary,” Cunningham said.

“It’s like an office manager position.”

Cunningham said he had not created a job description or a salary for a chief of staff.

Kane County Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven said she would not comment about the existence of a job description or salary for a possible chief of staff position in the clerk’s office.

time at the clerk’s office, starting Dec. 7, 2012, and going full time June 9, 2013, earning $47,990.90, according to county payroll records. The severance amount represented 12 weeks of salary, according to the severance agreement.

Cunningham’s Chief Deputy Stan Bond, who earns $81,559.96 according to county records, would not comment about what might have happened to his job if the chief of staff position had been created and Ward had been named to it.

“It would be best for Jack to explain his intentions,” Bond said.

Bond recently was elected to the Illinois Republican State Central Committee for the 14th District. He also is an elected trustee in the village of Montgomery.

A review of Ward and Cunningham’s county email accounts, released through the Freedom of Information Act, showed both Ward and Cunningham used the county’s computers and email addresses for Cunningham’s re-election campaign.

Ward’s use of the county email was referred to the county ethics adviser, who referred it to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The state’s attorney’s office said it does not comment on possible or pending investigations.

Kane County Treasurer David Rickert said a representative of the county clerk’s office picked up Ward’s severance check May 9, but records show it has not yet been cashed.

“Salary – that was the problem. I never created the position. It wasn’t making sense.”

Millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment on all but the first few sections, which have one pair of legs each. (Centipedes, by contrast, have only one pair of legs per segment.) This millipede, found at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn, has 51 body segments, which calculates out to an impressive total of 194 legs.

Life and schedules being what they are, a few days passed before I was able to really dig in and start the ID process.

Coffee in hand, I settled in for what I’d imagined would be a long progression of websites and reference materials. Because millipedes are members of the subphylum Myriapoda, or “many legs,” I felt certain there would be myriad details to sort through.

Boy, was I wrong.

Two clicks into www.

BugGuide.net, my favorite online field guide, and I had an answer. The individual belongs to a group of millipedes known collectively as the Narceus americanus/ annularis complex.

To my dismay, this name didn’t roll off the tongue quite the way Johnson’s Mound Millipede did. But the derivation of the genus name more than made up for it. Narceus, I learned, is a Latinized form

of the Greek root narca or narce, which means stupor.

It refers to the motionless, or stupor-like, coiled position millipedes assume when disturbed.

A little more digging led me to a few of other common names, the worm millipede, iron worm, and the one I felt most fitting, American giant millipede.

This research also helped quell a nagging fear that I’d harbored ever since running into the little big guy. Since the only other experience I’ve had with large millipedes involved species from other continents, I was afraid the Johnson’s Mound Millipede was nonnative and possibly invasive.

Happily, the Narceus americanus/annularis complex (the “complex” refers to the fact that while 14 species have been described, most have been incorporated into a single, wide-ranging group) is native to the eastern United

States, as well as a handful of states just west of the Mississippi.

As millipedes tend to be, this species is relatively inoffensive, quietly going about its business on moist woodland floors scavenging amongst the fallen leaves and mosses.

Amazingly, those many legs never trip up or tangle but instead move in a wavelike motion either forwards or – and this is neat when you think about it – backwards, depending on terrain and/or obstacles.

Young millipedes hatch from eggs laid in moist soil and spend two to three years feeding and molting, adding body segments and pairs of legs as they grow.

The oldest American giant millipede on record lived an impressive 11 years.

If you should be lucky enough to encounter one of these creatures, try to resist the urge to pick it up. While

millipedes lack the fangs and venom of their cousins, the centipedes, they do pack a powerful chemical punch in the form of benzoquinones – compounds that can be irritating to the eyes and skin – released through small openings called ozopores when the animal is agitated.

In addition, if you do indeed discover a giant American millipede – at Johnson’s Mound or elsewhere – I’d love to hear about it. Just a quick phone call or email with the date and location of your find would be fine.

I’ll be sure to richly reward you, not only with profuse words of thanks but also – if you want – a shiny new dime.

“What the…?!”

If I had a dime for every time I’ve uttered that phrase in wonder at some “new” creature or feature of nature ... well, let’s just say I’d have a lot of dimes.

Better still, thanks to a critter that crossed my path earlier this week, I’d be 10 cents richer even as I write this.

So there I was on Monday, walking the paved road at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn, when the biggest millipede I’ve ever seen in Illinois came shuffling out of the leaf litter and onto the pavement right in front of me.

My dog Joey, ever-faithful walking companion that he is, stopped short just as I did, and we both stared in amazement at the beauteous beastie that, I kid you not, had to be at least 4 inches in length.

That’s an astounding four times as long as the “usual” millipedes we’re accustomed to seeing under logs outdoors and every manner of locations indoors – basements, crawl spaces and garages (and, for some reason, just about every space we have here at Hickory Knolls).

The Johnson’s Mound Millipede, as I now refer to it, was enormous in comparison.

In fact, it made me think of some of the wild and wonderful – and huge – millipedes I’ve encountered on misty trails in the Smoky Mountains.

I snapped a few pics of this new item of intrigue and contemplated ending the hike there and then, so I could rush home and sort through possible identifications.

Joey, thankfully, felt otherwise, so once we made sure the Millipede (its great size certainly merits use of a capital M) was safely off the road, we continued on our walk up the Mound (its great glacial and cultural history is also capital-worthy) and then down before heading back to the car.

GENEVA – Motorists heading to Geneva during Memorial Day weekend, May 23-27, should be aware of two special events that will temporarily impact local traffic.

The Delnor Multi-Sport Madness youth triathlon will be from 6:30 to 10 a.m. May 25, beginning at the Delnor Hospital campus, at 300 Randall Road, then going through the Fisher Farms subdivision.

The following roadways will be closed to through traffic: • Fisher Drive from Heartland Drive to Bricher Road.

• Williamsburg Avenue from west of Randall Road.

• Bricher Road from the rear drive of Geneva Commons to Peck Road.

Police officers and race volunteers will be manning the course and will assist residents in and out of the subdivision.

Police recommend that residents who live west of Fisher Drive use Peck Road as an alternative to enter and exit their neighborhood.

While police will try to limit the impact on the surrounding area, motorists should be patient since the event will produce some traffic delays, police said.

Geneva’s annual Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10 a.m. May 26, from Crescent Place near the downtown Metra Station. The parade will proceed north on Third Street and end at the cemetery at Third and Stevens streets.

Third Street, along with West State Street, will be closed while the parade is in progress.

Once the parade reaches the cemetery, there will be a presentation that will require Third Street to be closed from Ford to Stevens streets. Stevens Street also will be closed from Second to Fourth streets.

“No parking” signs will be posted before the parade on Third Street from Hamilton to Stevens streets.

Given the large number of pedestrians in the area, police asks motorists to use caution when traveling through downtown Geneva and to expect delays.

Anderson plans tour, aims to debate Hultgren If you go

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Dennis Anderson, the Democratic challenger for the 14th Congressional District seat, will begin a districtwide town hall tour this month that will include a few Kane County stops.

The tour kicks off May 22 in Woodstock, and the first Kane County town hall will be from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.

June 3 at Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles.

Anderson, a Gurnee resident, plans to hold up to 25 town halls in all. He said he likely will speak to open each town hall event, then take questions from the audience for the rest of the time.

“I certainly hope that the town halls will give people the opportunity to get to know me,” Anderson said Friday. “I tend to make myself as available as possible.”

Hultgren, in a prepared statement Friday, did not directly address whether he would debate or appear with Anderson.

Hultgren said his time, at this point, is best spent focusing on addressing the needs of his constituents.

“I have heard about my opponent’s press release announcing a series of campaign stops masked as town hall meetings in an effort to gin up financial support for his campaign,” Hultgren said in the statement. “We will have plenty of time to campaign in the fall.”

gressional calendar should allow time for Hultgren and Anderson to appear together at some point. Anderson said events that feature the incumbent and himself as challenger are a valuable service to the public.

“I think that seeing both of us on stage ... provides an opportunity for voters to see, to listen, to question and make a good determination,” Anderson said.

Anderson’s next Kane County appearance after June 3 has not been finalized.

The campaign is looking at Elburn, Big Rock and Aurora’s west side as possible locations for another upcoming town hall, he said.

“It is definitely inappropriate for him to do campaign work while on county time and using county property – that is very, very clear,” Hartwell said. “Jack is the incumbent and our nominee, and it’s his decision what he’s going to do with it. The party selected him at this time. The people voted.”

Hartwell said the party never wants to see inappropriate behavior among its Republican elected officials, but there is no mechanism to ask a candidate to step down.

“Has he been asked to step down? No. Has it been discussed? No,” Hartwell said.

“Nobody has come to me to say Jack is a liability and needs to step down. ... The last thing anyone wants is an overreaction. Jack admitted he’s wrong. As chairman, I can’t say, ‘Jack, you’re done.’ ”

Risk Watch program available KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Geneva children who will be entering first grade this fall can learn safety lessons as part of the city’s annual Risk Watch summer program.

Presented by the Geneva fire and police departments, Risk Watch is a session that provides children with fun activities designed to promote safe decision-making skills.

A Kane County Democratic official said the party likely will slate a candidate to run against incumbent Republican Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham in the Nov. 4 general election, capitalizing on recent issues in the clerk’s office.

Cunningham will be seeking his fourth term in November.

Mark Guethle, chairman of the Kane County Democratic Central Committee, said the organization has a committee working on slating candidates for the clerk’s race as well as others.

“We have until June 2,” Guethle said. “We are trying to get candidates.”

Cunningham and a deputy clerk had used the county’s

computers and Internet servers to do campaign-related business during the work day.

That, as well as a severance package of more than $11,000 for that deputy clerk, whose position was eliminated, could be issues in the election, Guethle said.

“The campaign slogan could be, ‘I’m not Jack Cunningham,’” Guethle said, laughing.

Cunningham said he made a mistake and was wrong to send campaign emails on the county server, but he said he would not resign over it. Local Republicans said there is no movement to ask Cunningham to step down over the incident.

“Jack admitted he has made a mistake,” said Thomas Hartwell, the new party chairman for Kane County Republicans. Hartwell is the Kane County circuit clerk.

Qualified leader needed for Kane County Animal Control Wanted: An administrator for Kane County Animal Control.

Minimum requirements: Experience in local, state or federal government; proficiency in oral and written communication; three years of experience in providing animal control programs or services, or a closely related public or community health program or service; and a master’s degree in business management or a bachelor’s degree in public administration or related field.

Surely there must be a man or woman out there qualified to fill the administrator position for Kane County Animal Control.

Surely our county leaders won’t again bypass the opportunity to hire a highly

qualified candidate for someone who had political connections and might not necessarily be as qualified as others.

Case in point, the Kane County Chronicle editorialized in February 2013 that – considering Chairman Chris Lauzen had campaigned against what he had called “cronyism” in Kane County government – it was puzzling that the chairman would seek a position within Animal Control for political supporter Robert Sauceda, who had listed experience as an insurance agent and sales manager.

Sauceda at that time was being considered for a billing manager position with Animal Control. That was only after Lauzen original-

ly sought to hire Sauceda to lead the department but withdrew his nomination after County Board members didn’t support the idea.

We wrote at the time that “ ... even if Sauceda were the best candidate for [the billing manager] job, Lauzen should understand it’s questionable for him to seek to fill the spot with a political supporter of his. ... In filling the billing manager position, Lauzen would be wise to consider those who are adequately qualified and not tied to him politically.”

Of course, the Kane County Board ultimately approved Sauceda as interim Animal Control administrator in November, after he did spend time working as billing manager.

And Sauceda did see some success in the lead role – and in the role of billing manager – improving department finances and helping lead an effort to move about 100 animals from an impounded petting zoo.

But then he resigned May 7. Officials have said there was a personnel matter, and Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday that there was a second employee involved, noting, “The situation is ongoing.”

Now, the county is again seeking someone to head a department that has undergone multiple changes in leadership in the span of a few years.

It’s time to hire the right person, and considering candidates with the appropriate

background is a good place to start.

In a piece published in the Feb. 9, 2013, edition of the Chronicle, Lauzen wrote: “Nine months from now, when the results are in from the Animal Control billing collection process, I will ask the Chronicle editorial board to retract their premature judgment – or I will apologize to you all for my management error. Results matter.”

Perhaps no one could have anticipated the resignation of Sauceda so early into his role as interim administrator.

But the results now are that Animal Control is again left without a leader.

We’re calling on the Kane County Board to get the next hire right.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Preserving yellow bus transportation To the Editor: The Illinois Senate is considering legislation that will put thousands of schoolchildren at risk, increase traffic congestion and harm the environment.

House Bill 5967 would radically alter the formula that guarantees yellow bus service for all students living at least 1½ miles from school.

Under HB 5967, the minimum distance would increase to 2 miles, adding 172 square blocks, or 43 percent, to each school’s exclusion zone, according to research done by lobbyists for the Illinois School Transportation Association. This “small” change would virtually end bus service at many schools and force tens of thousands of students to find a different way to school.

These alternatives are not good for our economy, our environment or – most importantly – for the safety of our children.

Buses are the safest mode of school transportation. Students going to school are approximately 50 times more likely to get there alive if they take the bus rather than driving themselves or with friends, states www. schoolbusfacts.com. Reducing school bus service increases the chances of more student deaths.

Each bus takes about 34 vehicles off of the road, cutting traffic and the pollution that comes with it, as well as helping to curb student absenteeism and truancy.

Many school districts are actually looking at reducing the 1½ mile minimum due to parent concerns about safety issues and the effect of added traffic congestion on the environment.

Please ask your state senator to vote no on House Bill 5967 and preserve the yellow bus for more students.

8SOUND OFF I’m assuming that Chairman Lauzen is doing some serious self-reflection at this time, after making a very unwise political appointment of his friend, Mr. Sauceda, into a position that he had no experience in. I think that the voters who pay Mr. Sauceda’s salary deserve to know why he [resigned] from [the] office. Are you going to tell us, Mr. Chairman?

I can’t see the high taxes How much more are the real estate taxes going up? Don’t they realize that a lot of people, over 50, have lost jobs and are working anywhere they can to keep the family afloat? I can’t see the high taxes in the Tri-Cities area at all. Where is all that money going? They have riverboat casinos and lottery tickets for schools. With all the people buying lottery tickets, who is accountable for that?

It’s not free money Some of the newspapers are starting to have citizens group meetings about how we can make our community better.

One of the things I see is we need a lot more community involvement.

But people need to also understand when cities like Batavia put up headlines that say they are going to dip into reserves to ease residential electric costs, that doesn’t mean residential

What it means is that we’re going to have to make up in tax dollars so we have those reserves to reduce the electrical cost. Everything has a price.

I think we need to make sure that people are educated to understand that there’s nothing free in this world. Especially if it comes from the government, it is absolutely, unequivocally not free. It costs you in tax dollars.

That’s not free money.

How about hope for the U.S.?

Hope for Haiti 5K run? How about a Hope for the United States 5K run? I am tired of seeing events to help other countries. There are plenty of American people who need help. Why do we help other countries? They don’t help us. We send them our money.

We adopt their children. We sponsor them to come to our country. For what? Stop and think about this. Is this just so you can be a do-gooder? Our country is in big trouble, and we need to take care or ourselves.

Put your charity dollars to good use and help your fellow Americans.

How sad Recently, an article appeared in the Chronicle, “Open late, at a cost.” That was [about] bar owners who want to stay open until 2 a.m., not 1 a.m. How late do you really want to stay open?

How much do you think people should drink? The city is sure making a lot of money to

give you more to drink. Doesn’t the city make enough make money in real estate taxes?

How sad to drink for another hour, at somebody else’s expense. I am a mother who buried her child because of a drunken driver. He also got to drink late.

What fool approved it?

I travel all of the roads in Illinois, major intersections throughout this state, four-lane roads. At these intersections, there are maybe two or three stoplights. IDOT determines a two-lane road, at Waubonsee and Route 47, needs six green lights? What fool approved this?

Eliminate Spanish classes Recently, I noticed a food display, in Spanish only, at a ... gas station in St. Charles. I looked at it and wondered where our country is headed. The children in Spanish classes today will want to hear and practice their Spanish. I hear people speaking Spanish in stores every place I go. We are replacing English for Spanish as our common language.

As Americans, we tolerate so much at the expense of our culture and language. What will most U.S. citizens be speaking in the future, English or Spanish?

My suggestion is to eliminate Spanish classes in our schools.

Let us strive to protect our English language. Unless, of course, you do not care and are willing to give away English as the language of the land.

BATV names new station manager

Dillenburg is no stranger to BATV, as he has served on its board of directors as a member and as president.

Although Dillenburg had been serving as station manager on an interim basis since February, he officially assumed his new title Friday, he said.

“I’m excited about it,” Dillenburg said. “I think we have a really good team here.”

The previous station manager, Holly Deitchman, was named executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce in January.

According to BATV, Dillenburg has owned Silver Fox Video Productions for the past eight years, and his experience in business and technology spans more than 40 years.

As station manager, Dillenburg said he wants to work on improving quality.

BATV plans to add a couple of new shows this summer but still is working on developing their names, Dillenburg said.

He said college interns will help with the filming and coordinating of those shows.

BATV programming is broadcast on Comcast Channels 10 and 17 and on AT&T U-verse Channel 99 throughout northern Illinois.

Trick or treat The Cougars hosted the first of two “Halfway to Halloween” nights at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Friday, complete with a set of festive uniforms.

Jerseys were black and featured yellow skeletons, with not just a rib cage on the front and back but a humerus down each sleeve. The Cougars’ caps also featured a skull version of the team’s logo. Mascot Ozzie T. Cougar sported his own jersey and a vampire-inspired cape.

Cougars staff members were in costume, too, with Spider-Man, a cowboy, Sesame Street’s Count, a cheerleader, former Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed and a hot dog among those patrolling the areas in front of the dugouts before and during the game.

The staff also put their Photoshop skills to good use, cooking up some spooky shots of Cougars players to put up on the scoreboard during at-bats. Notable virtual costumes included catcher Cael Brockmeyer’s sad clown makeup and shortstop Carlos Penalver’s “V for Vendetta” mask.

Similar festivities will accompany today’s game.

Employee of the month Cougars catcher Will Remillard was honored before the game for being named the parent Cubs’ minor league player of the month for April.

Remillard batted .373 with a .458 on-base percentage and a .549 slugging percentage in 15 April games. He hit a homer and six doubles while scoring nine runs.

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Cougars’ “Halfway to Halloween” promotion came with costumes, spooky festivities and all-too-accurate weather.

Friday night’s affair at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark was a cold one, and that meant offense was in short supply. Usually cold nights benefitting pitchers is a conversation topic for early April rather than mid-May, but it sure did apply as the Cougars won a low-scoring game, 4-2, against the Quad Cities River Bandits.

And while busting out the winter coats to head to the ballpark might have been a nuisance for fans in attendance, Cougars starting pitcher Paul Blackburn is getting used to this spring’s ongoing chills.

peratures Friday or not, Blackburn certainly had an advantage. He tossed six innings and allowed just one run on two hits, one of which was a bunt single. All but one of Blackburn’s innings went 1-2-3.

It was Blackburn’s fourth win of the season, as he set a new season high with eight strikeouts and matched a season high with six innings pitched. He lowered his ERA to 2.76.

“A really good start,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “He set the tone with his tempo, and he absolutely just pounded the zone with strikes and got ahead of guys and put them away. He had his breaking ball working today, and that’s the key to having a good start like that is just really setting that good tempo.”

Two of East’s top athletes – soccer standout T.C. Hull and Koenen, a powerhouse tennis player – were among T.C. Hull Wednesday night’s honorees.

“It gave me chills,” the Michigan State-bound Koenen said.

“It really was Jasper Koenen an honor. I’m very fortunate to receive money [through the scholarship], but I think the award itself means a lot more to me to be able to live on Anna’s legacy at East and beyond. It was a great evening, and Anna was there

Lisa Daley called Koenen “a gentle giant” who showcases great leadership and determination, characteristics the program was designed to reward.

“This is truly recognizing so many kids that aren’t [necessarily] top academically but show such leadership, such integrity and have a tremendous ability to transcend adversity and to make things positive and make a difference in other people’s lives and are committed to serving others,” Lisa Daley said.

Hull dealt with major adversity as a senior, tearing his ACL for the second time in less than a year just as he was on the verge of salvaging the tail end of his senior soccer season. Hull, a Southern Illinois-Edwardsville recruit,

was crushed, but the memory of Daley’s courageous final months helped empower him to remain a supportive teammate.

“Obviously, it was really tough but you have to look at the big picture,” Hull said.

“I guess through the team, coaches, school and friends, you’ll be able to get through it. I was lucky enough, and so was Anna, to have friends to lean on throughout the whole thing, and that definitely helped a lot.”

In Hull’s essay applying for the scholarship, he wrote that Daley showed East students “what a true Fighting Saint is.”

“Learning about Anna has inspired me to go above and beyond in college because it shows that you can’t take anything for granted and every day is a blessing,” Hull wrote. “I have been lucky enough to be given many great opportunities in life and I have made the most of them while also helping out

others. Anna has taught me to keep a smile on my face no matter what the adversity is in life, and to enjoy every day like it is your last.”

The other recipients of this year’s scholarships are Karolina Borej, Teresa Dang, Mobeen “Farooq” Chaudhry, Mia Scott and William Kennedy.

Sean and Lisa Daley are moving from St. Charles to Tennessee next week but the scholarship program will help them keep their ties to the area.

“It’s just time for us to turn a new chapter and do something different and time for us to leave St. Charles,” Lisa Daley said. “We’ll come back every year to visit friends and continue to keep this legacy and this scholarship very much active at East, but it’s time for us to go carve a niche and see what the next 20 years are going to look like.”

St. Charles East senior Jasper Koenen recalled being a nervous freshman – is there any other kind? – on his first day of high school when he encountered Anna Daley.

Daley was a year older and full of enthusiasm and kindness. She told Koenen how great high school was going to be, encouraged him to just be himself and even walked him to his next class.

Koenen’s admiration for Daley was instant and grew exponentially as she later fought acute myeloid leukemia, a disease that cut her life short at age 17 on May 8, 2012.

Anna’s parents, Sean and Lisa, established the Anna Daley Fighting Saints Memorial Scholarship in her honor, and in the second year of the program, seven honorees received $1,000 scholarships toward college during Wednesday’s senior awards night at East.

St. Charles co-op girls lacrosse coach Morgan Logue has her team hovering just above .500 in her first season at the helm. A Barrington graduate who played collegiately and coached in Virginia before helping start Aurora University’s NCAA Division III program last season, Logue has embraced the challenge of fusing veteran players and talented newcomers. In this week’s edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Logue addresses the team’s outlook and analyzes lacrosse’s best attributes and Midwestern growth. Here’s an edited transcript of her conversation with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley:

What have you seen out of your team as you hit the stretch run?

This year, we definitely have a young team, but strong in leadership. A lot of girls have experience.

Freshmen have really been stepping up. So have our seniors. … We just had a transfer come in from New York, Liz (Maisch), and then also another sophomore.

Liz is a sophomore and so is Emma Haley. Then we have senior captain Mary (Fahey) and then also our goalie, Emilee Copple. They have all

We have some freshmen, including Lena (Kabeshita), who’s a freshman that’s started every single game as a low defender. And then also MacKenzie Brown has been earning her minutes throughout the season.

What’s your approach when you come in knowing you have players from all different walks of lacrosse?

Definitely coming in, you need experience. Just coming in [in my] first year actually helping out in the high school lacrosse game. Had a few years helping coach college, so just getting reacquainted with Illinois lacrosse. I was out in Virginia for five years.

Thankfully, though, I knew a lot of the girls that were on the team, which also is one of

the reasons why I wanted to be involved with St. Charles.

It’s through True Lacrosse, who is a travel team that’s just growing in the girls program.

Were there many Illinois girls on that first Aurora University roster?

Surprisingly, no. A lot of the girls that came in to Aurora were out-of-state. It’s hard to keep Illinois girls home. … It kind of depends.

The sport is pretty strong in the Naperville area, and then Aurora being so close, it’s hard to keep the girls, you know, less than an hour from home in an area they’re so familiar with.

This sport is king out East, but it’s growing here. Are the landscapes still night-and-day different?

My original answer would be ‘yes,’ but over the past few years, the sport has been growing so, so drastically, and especially in Illinois, there’s more youth programs, there’s more travel teams, there’s more competition.

The knowledge and availability of the sport is just so much more than it used to be.

And just flipping channels, you see the game is televised

more often on ESPNU or Big Ten Network.

Not only on TV, but just recently, Northwestern was able to play on Wrigley Field [in a women’s game against USC]. So the popularity of the sport is growing. I think it’s entertaining to watch.

It’s fast, it’s quick. It’s kind of a mixture. Whether you’re watching boys or girls, you get the mixture of basketball, soccer and hockey, which are all really popular sports, especially when it comes to the television aspect of it. Professional leagues are growing. I know that there’s nothing for girls yet, but I think it’s just a fun sport to watch and I think that people are going to be entertained by it.

What’s your outlook the rest of the way?

I just hope we can finish the season strong. We have some big games in front of us, games that we want to be competing in with the (state) tournament coming up. And hopefully we can finish strong for the seniors, make a big run through the tournament. … St. Charles has always been strong, always been in the top 20. Good group of girls, good schools and they’re just fun to work with.

STC boys lacrosse showdown moved to Geneva

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Neither St. Charles East nor St. Charles North applied for a change of venue for the schools’ crosstown classic boys lacrosse game.

Considering field conditions and some potential dire straits, the Saints and North Stars will take it.

After inclement weather postponed Friday’s game at East’s Norris Stadium, the teams will play at 2 p.m. today at Geneva’s Burgess Field.

“It’s still going to have the same intensity of any NorthEast rivalry in any sport,” North senior midfielder/attackman Jud Huxtable said.

“We’re playing on a turf field and a nice turf field at that in Geneva, and we know it’s going to be exciting.”

St. Charles Lacrosse Club

board members scrambled to find a reschedule date and location after Norris Stadium proved unplayable.

“How about that, though, getting snow in the middle of spring?” East senior midfielder Nate Campana said.

The window was especially tight with the IHSLA postseason set to begin next week.

“These first few years [after the St. Charles boys co-op split] are really defining the rivalry, so we wanted to get the game in,” Huxtable said.

Originally slated as a tripleheader that also featured games between the East and North JV and the St. Charles co-op and St. Francis girls, the lacrosse weekend looks to keep a competive tone despite the shuffling.

The girls game was moved to 10:30 a.m. today at St. Francis because Burgess is not

equipped with girls lacrosse lines. The boys JV programs will meet at Burgess at noon before a senior night ceremony for the three St. Charles varsity programs is held ahead of the varsity boys game.

Vikings down ’Dogs: Thursday’s Batavia-Geneva game at Bulldog Stadium offered a precursor for rivalry week.

The Vikings held on for a 5-4 victory, winning a face-off and running out the clock after the Bulldogs drew to within the final margin with about 30 seconds remaining.

“There’s definitely a friendly rivalry going on,” Vikings coach Derek Bahler said. “We had some support from Geneva in the stands along with the Batavia fans.

That definitely motivated us as the game went on, although playing Batavia is motivation

in and of itself.”

Senior Sam James, who Bahler called “a squirrelly little attackman,” sparked Geneva with two goals.

Classmate Brandon Heimbuch also scored, and boasts 39 of the team’s 82 goals this spring.

“We’ve just been stepping up as an entire team,” Bahler said. “Everybody’s playing for each other and we just want to extend the season as much as possible.”

STC co-op girls bide time: As Friday’s inclement weather persisted, the cancellations grew from the East-North JV boys game to both varsity contests. Keeping St. Francis on the schedule delights the St. Charles co-op girls even though the team will give up a home game.

GENEVA – Cougars players instinctively remove their laundry or food scraps from the clubhouse floor, so the vermin circulating about the space have nothing to do with messiness.

“Baseball rats” fast became a buzz phrase for the club with the Midwest League’s best record entering the weekend. Manager Mark Johnson started the trend, and the Cougars soon followed.

After much of the team’s core played together at Short-A Boise last season, the Cougars insist they’d be arriving early and staying late even if things weren’t looking up.

“Just having the feel of the guys, and we know each other,” infielder David Bote said. “We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we can build each other up and improve on those strengths, as well.

“It happens over time, of course, but also you can tell that first game there’s a good vibe. We’re baseball rats. ‘What can we do better? How can I push [infielder Daniel] Lockhart?

How can he push me?’ Day in and day out.”

The Cougars rank last in the 16team Midwest League in home runs this season but also are in the same position in strikeouts.

Hitting coach Tom Beyers and the video staff have helped facilitate a persistent approach Johnson also calls “grindy.”

“They put us in position to win every game with the videos, the drills that we do, how we approach the game, how they teach us to approach the game each day,” Bote said. “And with every game, we work and we believe. That’s all you can think of.

That’s all you can say, is just if we believe it, I think we can do it.”

Catching on to DH: As do the rest of his teammates in the Cougars’ catching rotation, Ben Carhart would prefer the chance to play every day, especially since he’s in his first full season behind the plate.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE LISLE – The Aurora Christian girls track team cruised to a team title at Friday’s Class 1A Lisle Sectional behind nine event victories, including all four relays.

The Eagles also produced seven individual state qualifiers to Thursday’s state preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston with Peyton Wade winning the high jump (5-feet-2) and 100-meter hurdles (15.64).

Rebecca Wert won the 800 in 2:28.78 and also qualified in the 1,600.

Class 2A and 3A preliminaries are Friday, with the threeclass finals May 24.

Class 2A Glenbard South Sectional: At Glen Ellyn, St. Francis qualified its 4x200 relay to the state preliminaries along with freshmen individuals Molly McCarthy (high jump) and Amanda Peterson (100).

As the only coaching holdover from the Lovie Smith regime, Jon Hoke is aware of the challenges facing 66 rookies and first-year players who arrived Friday at Halas Hall for rookie minicamp with little or no familiarity with many of their peers.

Hoke, entering his sixth season as the Bears defensive backs coach, is trying to quickly evaluate the eight defensive backs who participated Friday, as well as firstround cornerback Kyle Fuller and fourth-round safety Brock Vereen.

Of course, Hoke knew plenty about Fuller and Vereen before they were drafted.

“He’s a football guy,” Hoke said about Fuller, who impressed him firsthand at the NFL Combine in February and on a pre-draft workout.

“… Has a concept of what it’s all about. He plays the game the way you like to see defensive backs play – he’s a very physical player.”

Adding physicality to every area of the worst defense in franchise history was a major point of emphasis in general manager Phil Emery’s thorough offseason revamping. So was finding versatile players who give coordinator Mel Tucker more flexibility.

“He’s a unique guy because he played corner and he played safety,” Hoke said about Vereen, the former Minnesota Gopher whom the Bears traded up to acquire.

“He gives you a lot of flexibility. He is a safety – that’s where we’re going to play him – but you can see his athleticism for the safety position when he did play corner.”

St. Francis sophomore Shea Mahoney recently competed in the Junior Olympic National Championships for gymnastics and won bronze medals on both the floor with a score of 9.75, and beam with a score of 9.675.

She also received a sixth-place medal in the vault with a score of 9.775. These scores contributed to her Region 5 team’s national championship, as well as the super team championship. Mahoney’s combined regional and national competition scores have earned her a spot on the Region 5 All-Star team. The team includes the top 12 gymnasts from the five-state region (Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky). In July, the All-Star team will represent USA Gymnastics on a good will trip to the Dominican Republic. Mahoney was on the team last year and traveled to London and Belgium.

Kaneland boys basketball fundraiser

Boys and girls ages 8 through 14 are invited to participate in the 30th Annual Hitting Camp hosted by Waubonsee Community College. The Hitting Camp runs from June 9 through June 12 for baseball and fast pitch softball.

Instruction begins each day at 12:30 p.m. and continues until 2:30 p.m. on Waubonsee’s Sugar Grove Campus.

The head instructors for the camp, Waubonsee’s Dave Randall and Naperville North’s Mark Lindo, will teach the fundamentals and techniques of hitting with the emphasis on the basic mechanics necessary

ith Batavia’s high school graduation but a few days away, several of my friends realized this week that, whoa, they’d just made their children’s last school lunches. They’d been bracing for the cap and gown thing, but then this little, much quieter milestone snuck up on them – you know, without any “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Sure, there will be other lunches, and this is hardly a crisis (um, can I get an “Amen?” I know a few moms who kicked up their heels after drying their eyes.), but wow, the last school lunch? This is a couple of years off, for me, but the prospect did make my heart skip a beat.

Let’s be honest. For the average parent, making those lunches can be the bane of one’s existence. There’s the, “Ugh, I forgot to buy bread for sandwiches,” realization that finds you at Jewel late at night, or the discovery made 20 minutes before the school bus arrives that somehow you managed to buy bread but ran out of lunch bags. So, you make a mad dash to Walgreens, send one of the kids next door to beg from the neighbor, or paw through your purse (or, you know, borrow from the kid’s piggy bank – not that I would ever do such a thing, of course) so he can buy a hot lunch at school.

Even when you think you have your act together, you must field the occasional, “No more peanut butter and jelly. Susie said that only babies eat that.” Sure, OK, and thanks a lot, Susie, whoever you are. This revelation, made when Holly was in first grade, spawned some serious trial-and-error where lunch prep

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose was concerned, because “no way” would she eat ham or turkey (or hummus, etc.) in those days. I’ll never forget the comical conundrum of waking early to cook soup, mac and cheese or chicken nuggets – so I could then stuff them into a pre-heated (with boiling water) thermos so they’d remain a safe and palatable temperature until lunchtime.

I know, first-world problem. Grateful heart, here, but still. It made for some pretty crazy mornings. (And yes, you betcha, I ended up having lunch for breakfast, on those days.

Hard to resist a good chicken nugget, no matter the hour. But I digress.)

I won’t lie. In spite of the silly challenges involved, there are times when I’ve really enjoyed making my kids’ school lunches. You know, like when I’m on a roll and think I’ve got everyone’s preferences down pat, and am even stocked up on their favorites, making lunch prep (for them or me) a breeze. When my heart sings from the sheer joy of being on top of things I may even break into song (“Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” is my personal favorite, much to my kids’ consternation) or tuck a love note or two into their lunches. While looking for something to do, I came across a bird biology class offered at Morton Arboretum. I called up my master gardener buddy and suggested we go.

After some debate about taking a seven-week, possibly intense, science course and whether my brain was being affected by a severe case of cabin fever, we decided to do it.

We were amazed at what we learned about birds in general but especially hummingbirds!

With all of this end-of-the-school-year, endof-the-lunch-making stuff swirling about me, it’s no wonder I had a crazy “grief” dream. A few nights ago, I dreamt that I’d been feeling too tired, one morning, to reach out and kiss my firstborn goodbye as he left for a routine day at school. (I never miss the opportunity – I feel weird all day, if I do.) Then, suddenly, he was gone. He’d apparently died, and I desperately missed him. The pain was unbearable. I could see Noah’s face, saw him walking out the door that last time, and regretted not kissing his cheek while I still had the chance.

“Wow, you’re still doing that, huh?” he said, laughing, as he watched me cut into Holly’s PB & J sandwich Thursday night (yes, she recovered from Susie’s comment). Indeed, when I cut into a PB & J I always carve out the tiniest sliver of yummy goodness, right from the very middle. And eat it. I call it “my commission.” Holly still has no idea. Yeah, I know, it’s the best part of the sandwich and I will probably burn in mommy-purgatory for doing it. Whatever.

Ugh. My kids will grow up and leave, someday, and, yeah, I’ll miss them. Them, and those darned lunches.

Attendees to the tea party will get the opportunity to meet the characters; get autographs; make a Mad Hatter hat at an arts and crafts table; indulge in an array of sweets; and dance with the cast of “Alice in Wonderland.”

The tea party is open to the public.

The hummingbird commonly found in our area is the beautiful ruby-throated hummingbird. Some of its unique characteristics are the flight patterns and speed, up to 60 miles per hour, as well as how they feed.

In addition to speed, the ability to hover and fly different directions is the result of the hummingbird’s unusual capability to flap its wings rapidly in a figure eight pattern. The hummingbird has a very long, thin, grooved tongue which allows it to drink nectar from deep inside long trumpet-shaped flowers.

They feed on both nectar and insects and are often seen making the rounds from flower to feeder.

In the Midwest, we can expect to start seeing hummingbirds in mid to late April with migration occurring August through early October.

To attract these lovely birds to your garden, plan to provide feeders and plant hummingbird friendly flowers. Contrary to popular belief, hummingbird feeders do not prevent migration. It allows the birds to “feed up” in prepara-

tion for the long migration, often to Mexico and Central America.

Some flowers to attract hummingbirds include trumpet vines, columbine, lavender, red petunias, morning glory, hollyhock, delphinium, hostas, and red or orange phlox; just to name a few. Native perennials provide better quality nectar and will return each year.

Here are a few tips if you are interested in providing a nectar feeder. Homemade nectar is the way to go to assure the proper sugar to water concentration. If the nectar is too concentrated it cannot travel through the tongue grooves.

A concentration of four parts water to one part sugar is boiled and then allowed to cool. Do not add color as it is not necessary for bird attraction and may actually contain carcinogens. Feeders that are red in color are the most attractive to hummingbirds.

With these tips in mind, you are set for a summer of bird watching.

With the iridescent plumage and bright colors, the hummingbird is a bird well worth the effort.

Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore get together on screen again in ‘Blended’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now It seems to be the way of Hollywood. Every eight years or so, we get a romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore as a couple facing inordinate challenges, but somehow managing to make things work out in the end.

In “The Wedding Singer” (1998), they were both engaged to other people before seeing the light, and each other. In “50 First Dates” (2004), they fell for each other, but a medical condition caused her to forget who he was every day, until a solution was worked out. In their new film, “Blended,” they play single parents who meet on a blind date, realize that they’re complete opposites, and intend to keep it that way; then coincidentally end up – kids in tow – on the same African adventure vacation.

So, what do you think? Will they manage to make things work out in the end? Sandler and Barrymore recently got together to talk about their onscreen and real-life relationships.

Ed Symkus: You two have developed great screen chemistry. Any idea how that works?

Drew Barrymore: I would sum it up as having to do with respect. I’ve always respected Adam. I love him. He makes us laugh in the world. Aside from what we do together, I was so in love with the things he did from “Saturday Night Live” and “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison.” He has such a gift.

But then when it comes down to that one-on-one, where it’s just the two of us alone on a playing field, doing our thing, it’s like total respect, giddy respect.

Adam Sandler: I’ve known Drew for a long time, and I love her. In all three movies we have the pleasure of falling in love. In the first two I faked it, but on this one I really did. [He turns to Barrymore.] Would you marry me?

Symkus: Do you stay in touch between films?

Sandler: We both have families, but we’ve always stayed in touch. We’ve

No matter what’s going on, I’m always pulling for Drew, and I feel the same about her; whenever I’m doing something, I know that she’s pulling for me. We have a nice friendship.

Barrymore: And then every eight years I call you up and say we need to meet for lunch, and it’s time.

Sandler: It’s time to do a movie. [My producer] Mike Karz found a good script for us and we signed up.

Symkus: You’re both parents. Did that help you connect with the characters in “Blended?”

Barrymore: What really got me when I was reading the script and now when I watch the movie is I want funny because I need to laugh, but I also need heart and I need emotion. I want to laugh and I want to cry. Laughter and crying are like twins. And when these two people quietly talk about how they just want to be good parents, and what will make their kids happy and how are they going to function in this world, that just gets me. It made me cry in the script and it makes me cry in the movie.

Sandler: Being a parent, you’ve gotta

know if your kid is upset. When your kid is upset, it just rattles you; it’ll rock you until you know that the kid is not upset. But even when they’re not upset, you’re always nervous about it. You just want your kid to be happy.

Now I understand why my folks were always saying be nice to your sister, and make sure everybody in the family is OK. It’s like they’re protecting you by saying that the world’s gonna throw stuff at you that can hurt you. Just make sure your family’s got your back. Now I get that a little more.

Barrymore [to Sandler]: You’re a good, patient, loving, awesome parent, much like your character in the movie.

Sandler: You are, too. You’re all about your kids.

Symkus: So, with these three movies under your collective belts, are you already thinking of doing another one or two down the road?

Sandler: Yeah, I could see doing an “On Golden Pond” kind of movie with her, but maybe with a few more jokes in there.

Simple steps can dispel negative thoughts Dear Doctor K: I’m a “glass half-empty” type of person. I know that way of thinking adds to my stress and unhappiness. Is it possible to change the way I see things?

Dear Reader: Yes, there is.

Through a type of “talk therapy” called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), you can learn to reframe negative thoughts. That, in turn, can help change how you feel.

CBT can help you challenge overly simplistic, irrational, negative thoughts. It’s easiest when the thoughts are patently untrue: “I never do anything right,” for example.

It’s harder when there’s an element of truth mixed in: “At my age, I’ll never reach my goals.” If your dream was to be a famous opera singer, that statement may apply. Most likely, though, there are other goals you did reach.

And other goals you can still reach.

I’ll describe a four-step process taught at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

It’s one way to counteract distortions and negative thoughts: STOP. Call a mental time-out when you feel stressed.

BREATHE. Take a few deep

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff breaths and step back from whatever is causing you stress before you react.

REFLECT. Ask yourself if this thought or belief is true? Did I jump to a conclusion? What evidence do I actually have? Is there another way to view the situation? What’s the worst that could happen?

CHOOSE. Decide how to deal with the source of your stress.

For example: • Problem-solve what you can control. Gather information, make a plan and take action.

• Accept what you cannot change.

• Challenge distorted, irrational thinking. Ask yourself: How else can I think about this?

What else can I do to cope more effectively?

Here’s an example of how it might work. If you get stuck in traffic on the way to work, try to relax and take a few deep breaths.

Reflect: “It’s just a traffic jam. I can handle this. It’s not worth getting this upset.” Don’t assume you’ll be fired. Tell yourself, “I’ll

just be a few minutes late. I’m doing the best I can. I can handle this.”

Yes, I know this sounds simplistic and obvious. And I was skeptical, too, when I first heard about cognitive behavioral therapy. But I’ve seen enough examples of success that I’ve become a believer.

I’ve also come to believe that there are many goals that we all tend to set aside, thinking they no longer are practical or achievable. Sometimes that’s right; sometimes the skills required are easy to learn in childhood and hard later on. Sometimes attaining the skills requires more time and practice than is feasible.

But when it comes to changing personal qualities – such as impatience or lack of self-confidence – I’m more optimistic. I think we all are more capable of change, even later in life, than we might imagine.

The phrase that says it best for me is this: “It’s never too late to become the person you might have been.”

Dear Rosa: Don’t allow yourself to be subjected to this totally unacceptable behavior. Tell Juan that you no longer want to be treated with disrespect and that you will not be seeing him any more, and mean what you say. Rosa, you are suffering from a bad case of “lack of self-image.” You also need a boost in self-esteem. Start by thinking that you are beautiful, because you are. Beauty radiates from within.

Change your hairstyle, try some new makeup, and smile into the mirror and see how pretty you are. Smile at everyone you meet and make some new friends.

It may take a little time, but when the new you begins to shine, watch out world!

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and live with my divorced mother and her boyfriend, who has been living in our house for the past six months. My dad has remarried and is living about 50 miles away, but I haven’t seen him in a year.

A slam double asks for an unusual lead

Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure – or you can learn from it.

You will have trouble finding bridge partners if you make a lot of mistakes. But if you learn from them and turn your rate of failure nearly to zero, you will become very popular.

In today’s deal, though, “double” is the key word. East opens four hearts, showing a good eightcard suit and limited high-card power. Then, when his opponents cruise into six spades, he doubles.

What message does that transmit to West? What should West lead?

Doubling a slam because you think that it’s going down is mathematically inadvisable.

When the opponents are nonvulnerable, you turn plus 50 into plus 100. But if the slam makes, you have changed minus 980 into minus 1210.

So, many years ago, Theodore Lightner had the idea of using the double as lead-directing. It says that East has a void somewhere and hopes his partner can find it with his opening lead.

In this deal, West clearly expects his partner to have a diamond void. Therefore, he should lead his diamond ace.

Then, though, when everyone follows suit, West should rethink.

East’s void must be in clubs. West should shift to that suit at trick two, here defeating the contract.
