A

lthough I enjoy nature and I absolutely love spending time outdoors, I’ve never been all that interested in nature photography. That is, until I found out there were owls and bald eagles basically in our

backyard.

For the past few years, I’ve kept an eye out along the Fox River for bald eagles, and – for the second or third year now – I’ve looked for owls at Fabyan Forest Preserve near Geneva.

That’s where I was last week as I gathered my camera gear from my car and noticed some real nature enthusiasts with very large cameras staring into the trees. So, I sidled up, pretended to be a real nature photographer and

zeroed in on some baby owls in the hollow of a tree with an adult, seemingly napping with one eye and watching its brood with the other.

Geneva elementary students give art life on school’s lawn

asloboda@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Art teacher Sarah Brady knows her students at Mill Creek Elementary School won’t remember the tests they took when they look back at their grade-school years.

But she hopes they will remember Thursday, the culmination of a year-long project that brought art to life.

Staged on the school’s lawn just west of Geneva, the nearly 400 students – dressed in blue, brown and black shirts – arranged themselves to create a Viking ship that was best seen from the sky.

“They’re very excited,” Brady said.

The artwork took only minutes for the children to create, but Brady said it was the product of about a year’s worth of planning and collaboration with artist Daniel Dancer of Hood River, Oregon.

Dancer, of the Art for the Sky program, said he has orchestrated a couple of hundred such projects to date. The giant living paintings teach children about the power of collaboration and, because the images only make sense

“Our view of the world is too small,” Dancer said.

Brady said. She noted an eagle – the school’s mascot – was popular, but Dancer has retired that image.

Aided by a fire truck, Dancer overlooked the students from high in the air, giving them instructions through a megaphone before deeming the creation photograph-worthy.

“Do a little sail repair in the middle,” he said, referring to a white sheet that had come loose.

Finally, the scene – complete with the sun peaking out from behind the clouds – was ready to be pictured. After a few minutes, Dancer dismissed the group.

“You’re beautiful,” he said.

“Thank you.”

ALLERGY AWARENESS Various treatments available to fight symptoms

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Residents with allergies likely are not going to get any relief from Mother Nature this year, according to area pollen count data.

Pollen counts have increased gradually over the years, and every day is different, said Dr. Richard Hrdlicka at the Geneva Center For Allergy and Integrative Medicine.

“It’s kind of a joke that it gets worse every year, but it’s turning out to be true,” Hrdlicka said.

Currently, people are affected by pollen from trees, but the grass season will be starting soon in the area with its own increased pollen levels, Hrdlicka said.

Common allergy symptoms during the season include watery eyes, an itchy nose and nasal congestion. Symptoms could worsen to asthma, coughing or trouble breathing, Hrdlicka said.

The tree season seems to be starting earlier every year, and plants in bloom in the South still can affect Midwest residents because pollen can travel for long distances, Hrdlicka said.

Sugar Grove resident Beth Koch has learned pollen can travel up to 100 miles depending on the wind. Koch said she is mindful of when the trees start budding outside because she, her son Edmund, 11, and her daughter Belle, 9, all have various allergies.

“My advice to other parents is to chart when [their children] are sick, so the next year they can say ‘Yes, it did happen again’ or ‘No, it didn’t happen again,’ ” Koch said. “If it is allergies, they can go get tested.”

To combat allergies, Koch family members take an overthe-counter antihistamine and receive allergy shots at the Kaneland Allergy and Asthma Center in North Aurora.

Allergy medications have to start about 12 weeks before the season begins – that’s the tricky part, Hrdlicka said.

Nasal steroids have recently started to be offered over-thecounter, such as Flonase and Nasacort, which are good for

treating congestion, Hrdlicka said.

Patients with severe allergy symptoms can see doctors for traditional allergy desensitization through allergy shots.

Metcalfe is in the booster phase of her allergy shots and goes to Hrdlicka’s office twice a week.

When she enters the maintenance phase of her treatment, she will have fewer trips for shots.

Metcalfe had allergies as a child and had other treatments that were not as effective. Sometimes, she would have to be hospitalized and intubated.

Metcalfe eventually was recommended to see Hrdlicka, and she has been surprised by how effective the allergy shots have been. She said she swears by the treatment now and would recommend anyone with allergies issues to go to his office.

“I’ve had a lot of doctors in my life unfortunately, and I hate Chicago weather, but I don’t want to move from here because I don’t want to move away [from Hrdlicka’s] care,” Metcalfe said.

GENEVA – As a two-time cancer survivor, Jacqueline Camacho-Ruiz knows something about turning despair into something positive.

She had a baby, her dad left the family and – after just starting a company as an entrepreneur – she also was now in charge of her family.

Thursday, Kramer introduced the committee to his new finance director, Tony Meeks. Meeks was hired April 13, according to county documents.

While focus has been on the revenue forfeited through the federal inmate program, Kramer said his office also is facing revenue challenges because of fewer foreclosures and evictions.

ST. CHARLES – No additional active tuberculosis cases have been discovered at a business in St. Charles following one confirmed case in April, a Kane County Health Department spokesman confirmed Thursday.

No new cases were found after about 200 employees were tested May 5 and 6 at the RR Donnelley St. Charles campus near and along Kirk Road, said Tom Schlueter, the health department’s communications coordinator.

An employee at the business tested positive for tuberculosis sometime in April, Schlueter said. As a precaution, the Kane County Health Department administered tuberculin skin tests free of charge to the company.

“This is something that we do on a regular basis,” Schlueter said. “We’re always testing and investigating communicable diseases, that’s what the health department does.”

As of Thursday, Kane County has had five reported community TB cases so far this year. The case at RR Donnelley does not count as one of the five because the employee is a DuPage County resident, Schlueter said.

DuPage County has had seven community TB cases this year, said David Hass, a spokesman for the DuPage County Health Department.

Citing HIPAA law, Hass said he could not disclose any information about the employee who tested positive for tuberculosis.

Messages left Thursday afternoon with a RR Donnelley company spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that can affect the lungs and any other part of the body, and it is spread from one person to another through the air, according to the health department’s website.

The disease can be difficult to spread – it requires being in an enclosed area for an extended period of time, Schlueter said.

Batavia to battle Orland Park in ‘Battle of the Burbs’

“I’m game for anything,” said Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Holly Deitchman, who

will appear on the show with Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero.

They will be battling Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, as well as Priscilla Steinmetz, co-founder and director of The Bridge Teen Center in Orland Park, and Rob Wehmeier, owner of Wehmeier Portraits in

Orland Park. Teams will be introduced on the air at 7:55 a.m., with the first game will be at 8:20 a.m. The second contest will air at 8:55 a.m., with the third game airing at 9:20 a.m. The winning town will be crowned at 9:50 a.m.

“I look at this as a great marketing opportunity for our community, so anything that can draw attention to what amazing things happen

in Batavia, I think, is great for our community,” Deitchman said.

Schielke said the competition is more of a “friendly” competition because he is friends with McLaughlin.

“We serve together on the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Executive Board, so we talk every week,” Schielke said.

“This is really a competition among friends. I’m looking at

it as a positive, entertaining event that doesn’t have any negative impacts.”

In a statement on Orland Park’s website, McLaughlin said, “We’re looking forward to the competition and facing our counterparts from Batavia.”

Former Batavia student set to appear on ‘The Bachelorette’

But Drendel said he will be tuning in at 8 p.m. Monday for the season premiere of the show. One of his former students, Clint Arlis, will be a contestant on the show. Arlis, a 2005 Batavia

High School graduate, is one of 25 contestants vying for the hearts of bachelorettes Britt Nilsson and Kaitlyn Bristowe.

W h e n asked if Arlis would be a “good catch,” Drendel said Clint Arlis he has plenty of good qualities.

“Clint’s got a great per-

sonality and is a very enthusiastic, energetic guy,” Drendel said. “He loves the outdoors.

He’s got a kind of free and easy attitude and lifestyle, and I think he will bring that to the show. I think he went into the show just looking to have a good time. My guess is that he will make it entertaining.”

According to Arlis’ profile for the show, the 27-year-old is an architectural engineer

“He was really a hard worker,” Drendel said. “His technical ability was good, I wouldn’t say excellent, but he just worked himself into being a good wrestler.”

Batavia runs away with title

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – A constant drizzle that at times turned into a swirling downpour might have kept some fans from coming through the turnstyles at the Upstate Eight Conference Track and Field Championships from Metea Valley on Thursday.

It did nothing to slow down Batavia on the track, as the Bulldogs ran away from their River Division rivals and narrowly edged out Neuqua Valley for the top spot in the meet.

Senior Peyton Piron won both the 200-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles to help the Bulldogs cement the conference title after winning the Kane County meet already.

Piron edged out St. Charles

East’s Kyle Decker with a time of 39.03 seconds. Decker finished in second overall with a 39.29.

“Decker’s a good one,” Piron said. “I hadn’t run a strong race against him yet; he’s great, he’s got beautiful form, better than I have. I’ve got a little more kick which was nice. It’s my last conference meet ever and I had to try to defend my conference title, I wasn’t going to let it go down easy.”

Piron struggled out of the gate, clipping the second hurdle but recovered down the back stretch to take first.

“Our team slogan is keep calm and hang banners,” Piron said. “I kept that in my head when I went and I wound up catching him. I’ve got to give him credit, he’s an incredible

runner. He put up a great race and thankfully he pushed me really hard and I had to catch him on the last two hurdles. But like I said, I had a really good kick and wound up catching him.”

Decker helped the Saints rack up points on the evening, running in the 4x100 relay and taking first in the 110-meter hurdles.

“I had just run the 4x1 and there was a bunch of time in between so I knew I’d be fine,” Decker said on his mindset heading into the 110s. “I was really trying to stay focused since there were no prelims so it was just all-out finals. I was trying to think of how I’d approach each hurdle like a final. As far as the race goes, it was a struggle. There’s a lot of elbowing,

it’s a battle. But I’m glad I came out on top and helped my team out.”

Geneva spent most of the meet in 3rd place in the River Division and was aided by Ryan Skibinski’s win in the 100.

“I just knew that I was going against a lot of good competitors,” Skibinski said. “Bryce (Petty) from Bartlett I knew; he’s beaten me before so I knew he would be great competition.

I had to get out of the blocks quickly.”

Batavia will try to complete the trifecta by winning sectionals next week at West Aurora.

“We won county now, we won conference again,” Piron said. “We want to be the first team ever in Batavia history to win all three; it’s never been done in the history of Batavia.”

Defense, clutch hitting rhyme, reason behind East win

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jubilantly removing their gear from the visitors dugout Thursday, St. Charles East softball players and coaches repeated a seasonlong mantra, “Love the glove.”

Indeed, defense helped keep the Saints on an inside track toward repeating as Upstate Eight Conference River Division champions. Still, the less catchy and non-East sanctioned “Admire the fire” applied to a 6-3 victory against St. Charles North, as well.

Ahead, 3-2, entering the top of the seventh inning, the Saints rallied for three runs to create the breathing room that’s long been coveted when these crosstown contenders meet.

“It always is tense when you

play the North Stars because, you know, we share the town,” East junior designated player Catherine Crossen said. “But we came on in the end, and we felt good.”

With four conference games remaining, East (24-4, 16-2 UEC River) seized control of the league race while avenging last month’s home loss to the North Stars.

North (19-4, 14-3) needs help to catch or surpass the Saints down the stretch.

After a first-inning error helped East score runs on RBI singles from first baseman Jordan Hieber and catcher Rylee Stout, North Stars coach Tom Poulin pinpointed another area in which the team could use a boost.

“The four times we’ve lost, we haven’t played well defen-

sively,” Poulin said. “That’s disappointing, because at this point in the season, that should not occur.”

East capitalized on a North Stars mental lapse during a live-ball rundown to take a 3-0 lead in the third.

North, which had base runners against East junior righthander Jordan Hall in every inning but the third, struck back on catcher Alex Millett’s two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth.

That’s when a briskly played game that started about 10 minutes early began siding toward the pitchers. Hall and North freshman righty Jillian Waslawski settled in, with both pitching to contact to help aid their rhythm.

As the rhyming Saints could attest, however, defense was

more often on their side. Stout contributed one of a handful of crucial plays with a caught stealing of North left fielder Jordyn Wolfe for the second out of the fifth. Wolfe, who later doubled home a run in the seventh, had reached base on a leadoff walk “I was thinking, ‘She’s going, she’s going,’ ” Stout said.

“I just had that in my mind, and coach called a great pitch.”

Millett, the North Stars’ No. 7 hitter, worked a two-out walk an inning later, giving her team another spark. Saints senior second baseman Olivia Cheatham, who plays shortstop more often and projects as an outfielder at Evansville, extinguished it moments later.

Ranging to her right to track an Allison Hausl ground ball that seemed destined to

keep rolling up the middle, Cheatham secured the ball and flipped it to shortstop Kelly Rinker in one fluid motion.

“Love the glove” is right.

“It’s so funny, because if I look back to how I have approached coaching in the past, flipping the ball with your glove, you know, seven years ago, that’d be unheard of,” Saints coach Kelly Horan said.

“Because that’s flashy.

“No, it’s just good, solid ball play. And if you can do that and you have such great hands and great vision, then you can. It makes it a lot of fun when you have a lot of great players that can do that easily.”

Cheatham opened the East seventh with a single to center.

The rally included four hits as the Saints outhit the North Stars, 12-6, overall.

St. Charles North finishes off 3-game sweep of Batavia

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – St. Charles North knew taking the first two games of its baseball series with Batavia did not guarantee a sweep heading into Thursday’s series finale.

The North Stars were expecting Batavia to come out strong, and they countered, scoring early and often in a 13-3, five-inning victory over the Bulldogs.

For the third straight game, North (23-4, 17-3 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) jumped out to a lead with a run in the first inning. But, unlike the first two games of the series, the North Stars kept adding on.

North scored five runs in

the second, and, after Batavia got a run back in the third, scored seven more runs in the top half of the fifth to take a commanding lead. “[Batavia] is a quality team,” North coach Todd Genke said. “We were able to jump on them early, which is such a huge part of this game.

I think it gave our whole team confidence, when we added on. We still haven’t won the conference and we wanted to take each of these games one at a time.”

North has a three-game lead in the River Division with three games remaining, so a win in next week’s series with Elgin would clinch the outright title.

“It’s hard to win games in this league,” Genke said. “Our

kids have done such a good job being ready mentally each and every day. Our approach has been very businesslike and we’re playing really well in all aspects of the game.”

Once again, a defensive play stuck out for the North Stars, who also took advantage of five Batavia errors Thursday.

With a five-run lead entering the bottom of the fourth, Batavia’s Ben Lynam tried to get a rally going. The lefthander hit a line drive that was slicing into left-center field. North center fielder Brendan Joyce made a sliding grab just before the ball touched the ground to record the inning’s first out.

Both Genke and Joyce know how important defense

is for any team, but especially for a team as the postseason approaches. “[Joyce] just goes and gets the ball no matter where it is out there,” Genke said. “That was a phenomenal play and that’s the kind of athlete he is.

Defense wins baseball games and can make all the difference in a game.”

“We know games are going to be close this time of the season,” Joyce said. “We aren’t going to have blowouts in the playoffs, so a lot of 2-1, 3-2 games are going to come down to being strong defensively and as a group, we have been playing really well in the field.”

Joyce reached base in all four plate appearances, scoring three runs.

Tyler Mettetal improved to 5-1 on the mound, avoiding a bit of trouble in the second inning to help the North Stars to the sweep.

Shut out in the series’ first two games, Batavia (12-17, 1110) continued having trouble scoring runs, something that seemed frustrating to coach Matt Holm, who admittedly did not have much to say after the loss.

Glenn Albanese got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs, and did not get into the groove he was in from his last start, a five-inning, onehit shutout of Geneva.

The errors did not allow the sophomore right-hander to find a rhythm. Of the 11 runs he allowed, six were earned.

After hitting a game-winning, threerun home run against Batavia last week, the pitcher/outfielder followed it up with two more home runs in the Vikings’ 7-0 win Tuesday over Elgin.

He has had an up and down season on the mound, but has given Geneva a chance to win in most of his starts this season.

“We knew he was capable of doing this kind of thing,” Hahn said. “The Batavia rivalry kind of brought that out in all of our kids. We had multi-hit games in two of those and [Mitchell] was a big part of that.”

The more innings Merges can give the Vikings on the mound will benefit a Geneva bullpen that has been unlike many teams in the area, with a set closer in Nick Porretto.

Merges has also given Hahn a brief

glimpse of past Geneva teams that have had success hitting the long ball.

This year’s Vikings squad has had to manufacture runs by stringing together hits and doing the little things.

If Merges can continue to give Geneva a power threat in the middle of its order, the Vikings could be a tough team to play come postseason time.

North’s Lambert makes season debut After suffering an elbow injury in the offseason, North junior Jack Lambert made his season debut against Batavia Thursday, pitching the fifth and final inning of a run-rule victory. The left-hander threw 29 pitches, gave up two runs and struck out two in the relief outing.

Genke said the team is happy to have Lambert back in use and thinks the southpaw could be a part of the North Stars rotation down the stretch.

Sectional seeds for this season’s Class 3A and 4A postseason were released Tuesday, giving each team an early look at what could lie ahead in its quest for a long playoff run.

St. Charles North (23-4) landed the top spot out of 21 teams in the Class 4A St. Charles East Sectional, while the host Saints (18-8) earned the No. 3 seed. Geneva earned the No. 5 seed, while Batavia (12-17) is No. 10.

All four teams saw each other in the regular season as part of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

“We know there’s a good chance we could run into one of our conference foes come playoff time,” North coach Todd Genke said. “Once the playoffs start, everyone is even, but we just want to keep playing well and keep playing our best baseball at this time of the year.”

“We’re happy with our seed,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “There are so many good teams in 4A that every team has at least one good pitcher that you are probably going to see.

The main thing is that we want to be playing good baseball. There’s not too many blowouts in the playoffs, and I think playing in a lot of close games this season will help us.”

Marmion (11-16) will play in the 4A Romeoville Sectional, earning the No. 18 seed out of 21 teams. Downers Grove South and Waubonsie Valley are the top two seeds in that sectional.

The Cadets had a slow start to the season, record-wise, but have come on strong to pose a threat with their low seed.

In 3A, seeding for the sectional is broken down by regional. In the Sycamore Sectional, St. Francis will host and be the top seed of its regional, with Aurora Central Catholic right behind with the No. 2 seed.

Also part of the Sycamore Sectional are Burlington Central (21-7), Kaneland and Wheaton Academy, who will play at the Hampshire Regional. Central is the No. 1 seed in that regional, with the Knights (17-10) as the No. 4 seed and the Warriors No. 5.

Aurora Christian will take part in the 2A Byron Sectional, but host and have the No. 2 seed of its regional. Westminster Christian has the top spot in that regional.

Relationships help Batavia build success

aton exchange drills occasionally prompt longtime Batavia track and field coach Mike DiDomenico to channel a blast from the past.

“If we get a good handoff, it’s like, ‘It’s almost as good as the Allison-Allison handoff was,’ ” Bulldogs senior Audrey Jonke said, grinning at the words of “Coach D.” DiDomenico fondly recalls guiding current Bulldogs girls head coach Justin Allison and his identical twin brother, Josh, in the early 2000s, but the homey vibe persists at Batavia even as the Allisons no longer sport singlets. “(Coaches) create more of a family aspect,” senior Catie Ross said. “And you know, think of the people in your life, who do you work best with?

Your family. We just kind of go on that mentality, and it’s working so far. So we’re just going to keep that up.”

Batavia is eyeing big things at today’s Class 3A St. Charles North Sectional, and rightly so.

The Bulldogs contended with Geneva for last month’s Kane County meet crown and were in the running with St. Charles East during the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championships last week.

A jelling mix of newcomers and underclassmen highlight most event groups, namely among the relay quartet of Jonke, Ross, sophomore Hannah Schlman and freshman Tori Ortiz, who earned county titles in the 4x100 meters and 4x200.

“We have a lot of depth on our team,” Jonke said. “A lot of girls have been improving, we’ve got a lot of good freshmen coming in. And everyone’s working really hard to do the best that they can for their team and for themselves, so we can all be proud of each other.

Work together.”

Poll the younger Bulldogs and they call the cohesiveness a trickle-down effect.

“The seniors this year are a really tight group, and I think they united us as a team really well this year,” sophomore thrower Samantha Healy said.

“Last year it was almost the same, but this year, I think we know that we have the potential to do well, so we embrace it.”

Batavia qualified four entries to last season’s Class 3A state meet in Charleston.

Schlaman led the way with bids in the 100 and 200, and was joined by the 4x800 relay and since-graduated hurdler Taylor Stieve.

Optimism and the Bulldogs’ falling times and rising field distances suggest there’ll be a larger crimson and gold-clad contingent traveling downstate next week. Batavia earned a UEC indoor title at its own fieldhouse in March and has

kept progressing since.

There’s little question the upbeat Justin Allison would be the most popular person during next week’s bus commute.

“He’s a great coach,” Ortiz said. “He never fails to put a smile on anyone’s face. He’s always picking everybody up, cheering them on. It’s great to be running for such a great coach, too.”

Allison refers to the Bulldogs as “The Unit,” a quick, easy nickname that’s easy to remember.

Short of an “Allison-Allison handoff” reprise,” it’s also a connection athletes happily support.

“We try to live like that,” Jonke said. “We’re all together. It doesn’t work if one of us isn’t a part of it. We’re not the same.”

The IHSA’s seventh bass fishing state tournament begins today, and a majority have featured Chronicle-area anglers. Here’s a look at past participants.

Ominous weekend weather forecasts loom over the 66-team state tournament, which features eight hours of fishing both today and Saturday.

As with water acreage, the Cadets try not to concern themselves with such things.

“It’s been extremely exciting,” Lin said. “Being the first

year for most of the guys on our boat, placing top three in the sectional was a big boost for us heading to the state finals.”

Marmion took second to DeKalb at the most bountiful of Shabbona Lake’s seven sectionals, catching 13.65 pounds of bass to the Barbs’ 16.85. Third-place Rochelle (12.45) edged Batavia (11.90) and St. Charles North (11.70) for the final state berth.

Five teams reeled in the fivebass limit, as perfect conditions helped sink anxiety about a re-

peat of the 2013 competition, in which Indian Creek snagged the day’s lone catch, a 1.9-pounder.

Last spring, the Cadets’ upperclassman-filled boats finished sixth and seventh, respectively, at sectionals, with backups Callahan, Hayes and Lin taking mental notes from dry land.

“We went just as spectators. … Most of it was just waiting on the shoreline, but when the

The former, host of this weekend’s IHSA bass fishing state tournament, covers 26,000 acres. The latter, where Marmion competed at sectionals May 1 and earned a state berth, is a mere 319 acres.

You need not have a coach named Joe Large, as the Cadets do, to know that’s a big gulf.

When Marmion’s Dennis Hayes dismissed those figures a few moments later, one more thing became easily apparent: these anglers’ self-assuredness.

“You can have all the base and all the lures,” Hayes said, “but if you don’t have the confidence with them, you’re not going to get the bites with them.”

Marmion’s state-bound contingent – which also includes Steven Callahan, a third soph-

Armed with that knowledge at sectionals, the Cadets hurried to the busy dam area at the south end of the lake and took to doing some building of their own.

Weather permitting, Thursday promised to offer Marmion the same chance at Carlyle.

“It’s getting the idea of where stuff is on the lake,” Callahan said. “It’s making a mental note of, ‘Oh, stuff’s there, we should try that again tomorrow.’ ” With the words “confidence” and “mental” among those in the Cadets’ lexicon, it’s clear they take their bass fishing seriously.

Lodging in a cabin in Mulberry Grove, about 30 miles north of the lake, figures to augment the on-a-mission motif that ultimately starts and ends with the same reality “We’re going to have to cover a lot of water,” Lin said.

BC baseball clinches BNC East crown KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON – Big Northern Conference East baseball champion Burlington Central has prided itself on winning in many different ways this season.

Thursday’s 8-2, conference-clinching victory against Rockford Christian was no different, as the Rockets used their instincts and surroundings in a pivotal, five-run third inning.

“We ran a couple hits together, but also, we were taking a few extra bases,” Central coach Kyle Nelson said. “We were aggressive on the base paths, took advantage of some of their mistakes and came up with a couple big hits.”

BC (22-7, 12-1 BNC East) has one conference game left, but its nearest pursuer, Rockford Christian, finished with three league losses. Second baseman Tanner Smith turned an unassisted double play in the first inning, while Johnathan Murphy had three hits.

Elgin, Anna Geary and Kaitlyn Plocinski launched home runs for Geneva (16-7, 12-5 UEC River), while Rachel Fanella and Emily Plocinski combined on a one-hitter.

Teachers have turn to shine in spotlight during May JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry As I refine the memories from kindergarten to Ph.D., there are always the same stand-out teachers.

At Shelby School in the mid- to late-’40s, Florence Brandenburger, a principal and first-grade teacher, was calm and had an accepting demeanor as we sat in small circles to meet characters Dick and Jane.

Those two seemed to be fresh and exciting to her, so we couldn’t wait to turn the page and meet Sally.

Up the stairs, past Burt Frohling looking at his pocket watch, ready to ring the formidable school bell, was the classroom of John Albright.

Mr. Albright not only stood out as a man in a woman’s world, he took our

It appears that while in the mode for celebrating nurses and police officers, I missed the month for celebrating teachers.

Not only did I miss a chance to blow my own horn (longtime formal and informal educator), but to spotlight a truly irreplaceable and highly-valued group of dedicated professionals.

Consider with me the many formats for teaching: Sunday school, personal development, public school, higher education and – now – these days, those who design and deliver online products that link us with the whole world. What is important, from my perspective, is not so much the content or the delivery mode, it’s the reward – what one appreciates from that time forward, including – perhaps – a motivating and stimulating relationship, a way of thinking, solving problems, building self-assurance, a love for learning or, simply, a mind-blowing experience.

‘And When She Smiles ...’

We changed our perspectives from self to helping others and, considering the timeframe, began to think of the Earth, ecology and our obligations.

Note that in October of that sixthgrade year, I came down with paralytic polio. Both of these teachers visited me at least once a week.

No, no homework at all, just to maintain that link to Shelby, my classmates and to help me feel somehow special and worth caring about.

I recovered sufficiently to return to Shelby in the spring and go on the train trip to Springfield. Raise your hand if you, too, went down the metal-tube fire escape to the playground level with the sure and certain hope that it would be

safe, great fun and – somehow – a reward for learning long division all day, reading “T-Model Tommy” and learning to spell and why it matters.

Other stand-out educators were Helen Munhall and Paul Bergeson.

Miss Munhall was a roaring lion to be feared, especially if we did not meet her standards. Yet – to this day – I, too, roar when there is a violation of the “there? they’re? their?” choice.

Briefly, and forevermore, Mr. B demonstrated that inside and outside of the classroom; it was not simply respect, but mutual respect that really makes a difference.

Holmstad awards scholarships to students KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Residents at The Holmstad, a faith-based, nonprofit continuing care retirement community in Batavia, awarded scholarships totaling $8,000 to five senior high school students who work in dining services at the retirement community.

A presentation of awards took place May 6, when each recipient was introduced and recognized by the community and their peers, and their families enjoyed dinner with residents and the Scholarship Committee.

Batavia High School students Haley Iutzwig received a $1,300 scholarship award and will study elementary education at Illinois State University; Alex Scaccia received an $1,800 scholarship award and will study patent law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and Ally O’Donnell, a Kane County Chronicle intern, received an $1,800 scholarship award and will study biomedical engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, states a news release.

A step in the right direction would be to regard her as the person who saved your husband’s life at a point when you could have lost him.

Of course he thinks she is “great.” Not everyone is willing to be tested to see if it’s possible to BE a bone marrow donor. I think she is great, too.

Removing plaque buildup in carotid artery can be risky Dear Doctor K: I have a clogged carotid artery. My doctor wants me to have an endarterectomy. Is this the best treatment option for my condition?

Dear Reader: It’s impossible to answer your question without a lot more information. What I can do is describe what a clogged artery is, and what some of your treatment options are.

The carotid arteries of the neck carry oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood from the heart to the brain. Deposits of fat and cholesterol – plaque – on the walls of the carotid arteries increase the risk of a stroke. Plaque can block blood flow to part of the brain.

Or, a piece of it can break loose and completely block a smaller vessel in the brain.

Carotid endarterectomy is a procedure in which a surgeon opens the carotid artery and removes the plaque. It is the gold standard for treating plaque buildup in a carotid artery.

That being said, this delicate procedure should be performed only by an experienced surgeon.

And the surgery should be done only on people with the greatest chance of benefit. That’s because the surgery contains its own risks, including causing the very

Prime candidates for carotid endarterectomy include people who have an artery that is more than 50 percent blocked and who have worrisome symptoms.

These include sudden weakness or loss of sensation on one side of the body; sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes; or sudden inability to speak or to understand speech. Such symptoms may be caused by something called a “mini-stroke” or “transient ischemic attack” (TIA). A person with a TIA is at much greater risk of having a stroke – and permanent brain damage.

I gather from your question that you have not had these symptoms. Nevertheless, the operation still may be a good option if a person has a severe blockage.

A less invasive option is carotid artery stenting. In this procedure, a thin plastic tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery (usually in the groin).

The tip of the catheter then is

pushed up the body’s largest artery (the aorta) and into the carotid artery. When the tip reaches the blockage, the doctor inflates a tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter. Over the balloon is an expandable wire cage (stent).

Occasionally, this procedure may dislodge small pieces of plaque. These, in turn, can cause a stroke; just as with surgery, the stent procedure can occasionally cause the very problem it is trying to prevent. For some people, the risks of either surgery or a stent may outweigh the likely benefit. If that’s the case, medicines to prevent stroke are an option. Anti-platelet drugs that prevent blood clots are taken together with cholesterol-lowering statins and blood pressure-lowering drugs.

Parents make best role models Dr. Wallace: I’m a father of two teenagers, and I enjoy a relaxing alcoholic beverage after a hard day at the office.

I read your column regularly, and I’m tired of hearing you preach that all alcohol and tobacco products are terrible.

I’m a good parent, and having a drink or two and a good cigar does not make me bad! – Dad, Sycamore Dear Dad: I never said that smoking and drinking makes for a bad parent, but I will say that giving up the evening drinks and the “good” cigars will make a good parent even better.

Parents are a teen’s best role models. When parents smoke and consume alcohol, the chances are that their children will wind up doing the same.

Dr. Wallace: My family recently moved to Phoenix. I have become friends with a group of guys, and some of them smoke and drink, but they don’t do drugs except for marijuana.

They have been nice to me, and we have a lot of fun together.

My mother doesn’t want me to hang with these guys this summer because she thinks that pretty soon I’ll start smoking and drinking.

She says that it’s just a matter of time. I promised her that I wouldn’t do bad stuff, but she doesn’t believe me.

How can I convince her that these guys won’t influence me to join in their habits? I never had a lot of friends when we lived in Oregon, and now I have a lot of friends, and I want to keep them.

What do you think about me hanging with my new friends? Do you think that I can stay

It might take time, but I firmly believe that the people we hang out with affect how we think, feel, act and what we do. Your mother is a very wise parent. I suggest you take her advice.

Do your best to participate in school clubs and activities that will enable you to meet new friends who have interests similar to your own and who have behavior standards more like your mother is advocating. Check out summer recreation programs in Phoenix and perhaps some volunteer groups that you could help. This would allow you to have a more positive environment.

Dr. Wallace: Both of my parents have average height. I’m 15, and I seem to be pretty short for my age. At what age does a teen reach maximum height? – Curious, Jennings, Louisiana Dear Curious: Mother Nature has given you four more years, or even longer, to reach your maximum height. Most people peak by age 19, but it is not unusual to continue growing until age 25.

It is almost always better to play in the 4-4 fit, not the 5-3 fit, because you have a good chance to get an extra trump trick by ruffing a loser in one hand or the other. And the 5-3 fit will usually deliver two discards.

A 4-4 side suit can never provide a pitch.

Here, four hearts looks in trouble, given the bad trump break, but it can be made if declarer is careful after West starts the defense with three rounds of diamonds. How? It would be easy to get careless after ruffing the third diamond by assuming a 3-2 trump break.

If declarer immediately draws two rounds of trumps, here he goes down.

South should see these 10 tricks: five spades, three hearts, one club and the diamond ruff.

At trick four, he should run the heart 10. Yes it loses, but East has no answer.

Even if he tries the fourth diamond, South ruffs with his heart nine, draws trumps, and claims.
