Listen to grandma TABLE TALK WITH ALLY Ally O’Donnell I have aspired to be a published author since the second grade.

At only 7 years old, I partnered with my friend to write and illustrate a picture book about two girls who have a sleepover. My friend was the illustrator for the book. This “writing bug” disappeared for a while and didn’t pop back up again until sixth grade.

A dream sparked my passion to return. It was about a polar bear that rescued a girl from a river. The next day, I went to my lunch table with my “High School Musical” notebook and began sketching an outline of a book I wanted to write.

Like most 11-year-olds, my interest flew from one thing to another, and I soon forgot about my book. It wasn’t until eighth grade that I took up the novel idea and began to write. It took six months to finish the book, which I named “Soul,” after the polar bear in the book. I came in the next day of school standing tall.

I told the librarian about my feat and she offered to let me sell my book at our school book fair. I agreed and sold around 30 books within a couple of days.

These books were produced using a website I found.

Several sixth-grade teachers also asked me whether I could speak to groups of students about writing a book. I felt like a mini-celebrity.

Through all of this, my grandma, Mary Homan, was my biggest supporter.

She was always looking for the next snippet of my writing.

Through her encouragement, I finished the second book in three months and the third in two months.

The three books together

completed a trilogy.

I was working on a fourth book when my grandma unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack. I was crushed. My encouragement and biggest supporter had left my life. I finished the fourth book by the end of my sophomore year because I knew my grandma would haunt me if I didn’t. After that, I rarely wrote for two years.

It’s only now, in my senior year, that I have regained my passion for writing I had all those years ago. I know the last thing my grandma would have wanted would be for me to give up on my dream. I completed my fifth book about two weeks ago and will spend the summer editing it.

I will attempt to get this book published once I finish. I have had experience with this, for I tried to get my first and fourth books published, though I was unsuccessful in my endeavors.

Now, once I finish editing my fifth book, “Juniper Ash,” I’m not going to stop trying until it’s on bookshelves across America. I don’t dream to be famous.

My dream is to be a published author and have my book read. I want my story, not my name, to be known.

Why am I telling you this? I don’t want you to give up on your dreams like I almost did. Even if it seems impossible, go for it.

As my grandma wrote to me in an email from 2011: “Always know how proud we are of you and never give up on your dreams.”

St. Charles high schools rank among best in nation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North and East are once again the only two Kane County high schools listed among Illinois’ Top 50 public schools in the U.S. News 2015 Best High Schools rankings.

Among all Illinois public high schools, St. Charles North ranks 35th, and St. Charles East ranks 42nd in 2015, according to the rankings. This is the fourth consecutive year both St. Charles East and St. Charles North have ranked in both the Top 1,000 nationwide and the Top 50 in Illinois, according the U.S. News Best High Schools rankings.

The 2015 U.S. News rankings of America’s Best High Schools include data on nearly 29,000 public high schools from all 50 states and from the District of Columbia.

A three-step process determined the best high schools. The first two steps ensured the schools serve all of their students well, using performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks.

For schools that made it past the first two steps, a third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work based on student success in advanced placement and international baccalaureate programs.

LOCAL BRIEFS Phone, Internet outage at 4 Geneva schools GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 is reporting phone and Internet outages at both of the district’s middle schools, Friendship Station and Fabyan Elementary School. A post on the city of Geneva’s website states on Wednesday morning, “a construction crew accidentally cut through underground fiber optic cables while working on the Randall Road traffic signalization project near Christina Lane.” According to a post on the school district’s website, service is expected to be restored in two to four days.

Calls to the schools will be re-routed to the district office, according to the school district’s website.

FIBROMYALGIA FINDING Fibromyalgia is a multi-modal disease that produces pain and lethargy (among a variety of other symptoms) that may be caused by a number of undetermined factors. The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing pain at defined tender points (myofascial trigger points). Fibromyalgia patients are also afflicted with chronic fatigue, malaise, dizziness, numbness, tingling, a swollen feeling in tissues, and stiffness. Recently, researchers have also found that fibromyalgia sufferers are hypersensitive to everyday sensory stimulation, including sight, sound, and touch. As a result, they may experience difficulty processing everyday sights, which is something that the eye doctor can help ascertain with a comprehensive eye exam. This may be one more clue to determining fibromyalgia’s cause(s).

P.S. Fibromyalgia remains a mysterious disease, but the research noted above suggests that it may have its origins in the processing centers of the brain and the sensory nerve fibers in blood vessels.

EXPLORING ISTANBUL’S CULTURE GUEST VIEW Shayne Chammavanijakul I’m no foreigner to traveling. It’s my hobby, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to travel the world.

It started with Paris 10 years ago, and this fondness for spontaneous excursions took me through Rome, Amsterdam and London. And more recently, Tel Aviv and Madrid.

In the decade I’ve been traveling, I’ve noticed there are certain aspects people might unconsciously equate with a country. Stereotypes, if you will, that derive from that country’s portrayal in the media.

Take the city of Paris as an example. I’ve seen that place depicted in movies as this enchanting playground for romantics. A city of lights, with glamorous fashionistas that saunter down paths with berets and flashy heels that noisily clomp against cobblestone paths. Mimes.

Baguettes. Snails. Think about how Rome is portrayed, too – a fantasy getaway for lovers, a place for wine, gelato and suave men with over-exaggerated accents, lustrous manes and perfect jawlines that could cut through cheese (and not just any cheese, mind you; we’re talking about real, firm Italian pecorino toscano). Or maybe I just watch a ton of romantic movies. But anyway.

My point? Stereotypes don’t define anything. Of course, this is a known fact. Stereotypes or how others perceive a certain culture don’t entirely make up what a country is.

Then again, it depends on how you look at it. At least the way some places are portrayed gives us a sense of what to expect. I can recall knowing what to see, and truthfully, what to expect, when I had the chance to go to Paris a long time ago, like the iconic Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe. And before I went to London, I already had visions of Buckingham Palace and high tea.

But let’s talk about Turkey.

Before I went to Turkey at the end of March, I seriously had no idea what to expect, or

I mean, nothing had immediately struck my mind when I first thought of Turkey. As far as I was concerned, there didn’t seem to be any sort of major cultural icon or stereotype I could ride off of. Call this situation whatever you like, whether it’s ignorance or a bad case of teenage apathy on my part. I had asked people around me beforehand what they thought of Turkey, and I got varying responses, including: “I immediately think of Istanbul. This city has such an amazing history. I automatically think of Turkish carpets and rugs. I think of food that has amazing spices. Turkey to me is more conservative in dress and etiquette, and this is reflected in the culture.

Turkish culture and ideas are a true mix of Western and Eastern values and ideas.”

To: “Spicy food. I think of Ottoman Turks. Deserts, like, really dry ... and I think of street markets. I think of spices, because of the trade in spices there. I think of curry, I don’t know why. Istanbul.

Isn’t there a palace there?”

To: “The only thing I

associate with Turkey is its location in South America.”

OK. Good start, good start.

(By the way, Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, not South America.)

Back to my whole notknowing-what-to-expect mindset. Like I said, when it came to knowing where to start and initially understanding what Turkey had to offer, I won’t deny I was totally driving in the dark. But in that sense, dare I say I wanted to keep an open mind? After a week in Istanbul, here’s what I learned.

Istanbul, as I’ve seen, is a mix of the Middle East and the Western World, mapped with a “Europe” side and an “Asia” side that’s divided by the Bosphorus Strait. Walking through the city, where I spent most of my week, it was clear to me that it’s modern and full of life. Of course, this makes for a good balance with its unique traditions and historical sights, from the Blue Mosque to a smaller piece of Byzantine history, such as the Basilica Cistern, an ancient, underground reservoir dating back to 532.

There’s plenty of truth in how much hospitality and good will the Turks give off.

Take a walk around Istanbul.

Even if (and especially) you come across as a tourist, locals will come up to you, eager to help in any way they can.

They’ll ask you where you’re from. Humor them a little, and give an answer. Many will immediately respond, rattling off the bit of English they’ve got up their sleeve ... or Italian. Or Korean. Or German.

“Oh, we’re from Italy.”

“Buonasera!”

“We’re from China.”

“Ni hao!”

Or, in my case ...

“I’m from Chicago.”

“Ah, hello! Welcome, welcome!”

The simple greetings and affectionate how-do-you-dos might come off as a small feat.

But think of it as considerate – taking the initiative to give a welcome to different people of different cultures. It’s the warm greeting, the arm around your shoulder, the fond touch, their friendly address – “Hello brother,” “hello friend.” Granted, 8 times out of 10 they’re sweet-talking you to drum up some business for their family’s shop, but hey, it’s the thought that counts.

On my first night in Istanbul, I ran into a man by

the name of Taner Kaymaz, a Turkish local with a major in tourism, who brought up an intriguing point about what makes the Turks special.

“Here in Turkey, we know a lot about other countries,” he said. “Like, where they are, which language they speak or what kind of people they are.

We know a lot about those.

I think it’s because of our history. Because the Ottoman Empire was in Arabia, the Arabian Peninsula. They were in Africa, Northern Africa, and in Europe, Asia. They were everywhere, and there were so many people living under the empire of Ottoman.

So, I think that’s why we know a lot about them, because it’s in our history books, true or false, but we learn something about those people.”

I think that when it came to the people, I was in good hands. The Turks embrace their own culture and learn about others, as well. They help out the people who are curious about their country and way of life. They aren’t hesitant to talk about the places to go, the things to do.

In fact, there’s a bit of a tour guide in each of them.

And if there was something else I learned? Explore. Sure, exploring is a total no-brainer for those who travel. But that’s the best part. The spontaneity, the excitement that comes out of going someplace and not knowing what to expect. Getting lost. Satisfying that curiosity. In that sense, when it comes to traveling, strict itineraries aren’t always needed. But if I could throw a few recommendations out there ...

The Blue Mosque is a definite must-go. Even if you’re not of Islam faith, there’s a section available to visitors who can go inside and see the beautiful interior, open at certain times throughout the day when prayer isn’t in session.

And I was totally up for losing myself in the nooks and crannies of the Grand Bazaar, an elaborate maze where you can buy anything from amulets and intricate Turkish-style tea seats to, as you might see, “the most genuine fake watches.”

Vendors have rows of containers filled with heaps of spices and tea, and, of course, the one and only “Turkish Delight.” You might recall the references to this in “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and yes, I wholly admit to feeling like Edmund while scarfing this down. Nuts held together by gel, cut into cubes, and dusted with powdered sugar have become a huge selling point in Turkey.

And since we’re on the topic of food, take this into consideration – kabobs aren’t everything. Sure, it’s still a huge part of their cuisine and a more familiar dish, but let’s put them down and expand a little. If I could give one pointer about food, it’d be go to a lokanta – a self-service type of place, almost like a cafeteria. Lokantas dish out different kinds of comfort food from pilaf to lamb to manti – dumplings in a yogurt and mint sauce. Dessert cafes let you indulge in perhaps what they claim to be the best baklava – nuts sweetened with syrup sandwiched in between crisp phyllo dough. And while you’re at some well-known places like Hafiz Mustafa (nudge, nudge), do yourself a favor. Fill up on some kaymak, a generous mound of clotted cream. Dousing this mound in honey is highly encouraged.

(And if there’s honeycomb, you’ve just hit the jackpot.)

I’ve seen Turkish cuisine have a big emphasis on ingredients like cheese and especially yogurt. Traditional breakfasts are comprised of small dishes of fresh cheese, plain yogurt, olives, cucumbers and tomatoes. Small servings of eggs (menemen is a dish I’d like to highlight – scrambled eggs made red with tomatoes and peppers) go along with that, too. And tea. Dude, you can’t forget tea.

They’re pretty big on it.

Overall, Turkey ranks pretty high on best destinations lists on TripAdvisor or World of Wanderlust. Istanbul was even up with Madrid and Tokyo as candidates for the

host of the 2020 Olympics. I can’t speak for older people, but why aren’t some people around my age familiar with Turkey compared to other cities?

I don’t know, actually.

Might I add, when someone heard I was going to Turkey, their initial reaction was a slightly surprised look, along with an: “Oh. Be careful over there. Be safe.”

“Yeah, Turkey has a bad reputation,” Kaymaz said.

“I think most Americans constitute Turkey as a country in the Middle East. Turkey has a bad reputation, but I think it’s because people don’t know about Turkey. As you can see here, in Turkey, Turkey is much more modern, or more liberal than the other Islamic countries, because it’s a secular country, that’s in our constitution.”

Of course, there’s more to Turkey than its reputation or how some may perceive its culture. I’ll always adhere to my belief that every country has some sort of story or element that makes it unique.

Turkey’s got this special position that gives it a little of everything from the Western world and the Middle East, and that’s something that distinguishes it, along with the amiable people and its culture.

I won’t deny I didn’t know what to expect going into this, and even now, I still don’t have a total, in-depth, extensive understanding of Turkey.

But I’m getting there. Diving into a whole new culture requires an open mind, and I’ve learned not to rely on common stereotypes or what’s flaunted in travel books and guides to write a good itinerary. After all, there’s always something hidden within its people that tourists have yet to explore and find. It could be the very thing that makes it special. A diamond in the rough, if you will. But I think I’ve spewed out a ton of clichés already.

Diving into new culture requires open mind

Drivers injured in 2-car crash in St. Charles Township

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Two people were hurt, with one suffering potential life-threatening injuries, in a two-car crash Wednesday morning on Route 25 in St. Charles Township.

The crash took place at 6:40 a.m., near the intersection of Seminary Drive. According to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, an older-model Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 27-year-old St. Charles man, was heading south on Route 25 when a four-door Cadillac, driven by a 33-year-old Bloomingdale man, pulled out directly in

front of the Jeep.

Police said the Cadillac failed to stop at the stop sign for eastbound traffic on Seminary Drive. Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, described it as a busy intersection and said it was a T-bone crash.

“If you don’t stop at that stop sign at that time of day, it’s probably going to be a problem,” Gengler said.

According to the release, the driver of the Cadillac was being treated for potential life-threatening injuries. The other driver’s injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

No charges were immediately issued, police said. The

drivers of both vehicles were the sole occupants and were taken to Delnor Hospital. Police said it appears neither driver had been wearing a

seatbelt. The investigation is ongoing, police said, and it has not yet been determined whether drugs, alcohol or electronic devices played a

role in the crash. Route 25 was closed between Army Trail Road and Seminary Drive for three hours while the crash was investigated.

ELGIN – In understanding why people might distrust police, Elgin City Council member Tish Powell said there needs to be an understanding of the history behind that distrust.

“There is a history of distrust, especially within the African-American community, when it comes to the police,” Powell said Wednesday at a symposium at Elgin Community College. “You really need to understand the history before you can understand why people feel the way they do.”

Decision time nears for county’s electric aggregation program

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Residents in unincorporated areas of Kane County should soon know whether they can get electricity for a lower cost.

County officials have been working to bring an electric aggregation program to residents since spring 2014, and on June 2 they should know whether the potential suppliers’ rates beat ComEd’s, said Ken Anderson, director of the division of environmental and water resources.

He did note, however, the margin between ComEd’s and other suppliers’ rates is smaller than from a few years ago.

“It’s just a different market right now,” Anderson said.

Four suppliers are being considered, he said, noting the county is conducting a vetting process while it waits for the rates.

Should the county decide to proceed with a supplier, Anderson said, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has the authority to accept and sign a contract without bringing the item to the full board

for consideration.

Agenda documents for previous board meetings indicate it is important for the county to respond quickly because quoted prices hold for about a day because of the fluctuation in the electrical supply market.

Full implementation of an electric aggregation program would take about two to three months after a contract is awarded because the county must fulfill certain requirements, such as notifying residents about the change and how to opt out, Anderson said.

Ziman said police officers need to use compassion and empathy in their jobs.

“It doesn’t matter what your race is, what your gender is, what your orientation is, what your religion is,” Ziman said. “It’s a human factor that we want to apply, and that simply is respect. When I mean respect, I’m talking

about not looking down upon people, but looking at them.”

Chicago Police Sgt. Larry Snelling addressed the topic of protests, demonstrations and crowd control.

“People have the right to protest, and we have to teach our officers to respect that right,” Snelling said. “We cannot deprive anyone of the right to protest.”

At the same time, he said police departments need to be aware of when a protest might become violent.

“We have to recognize what the crowd behavior is,” Snelling said. “If there is a crowd that is not violent, we want to stay back. It is important to stay prepared before something occurs. You never know what is going to happen.”

rent location across the street at the Fox Island Square building. Construction on the parking deck will begin by the end of August or early September and be completed by spring 2016 at the latest, Tungare said.

Work on the second building is slated to start no later than spring 2016, followed by construction of the third building in spring 2017, Tungare said.

City officials Wednesday also took time to address rumors concerning the St. Charles Police Department possibly moving to another site.

Any updates regarding the police department’s location heard during the next six months is likely a rumor, said Pete Suhr, the city’s public works director.

The city is awaiting a final expert report of the police station to determine what the next course of action should be, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said.

Early findings from the report could be shared with the city council in June, Keegan said.

The third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project is scheduled to begin in July, said Rita Tungare, the city’s director of community and economic development.

The third phase, which was approved by the St. Charles City Council in March, covers the portion of the site located south of the planned East Plaza and north of Illinois Street and would include three mixed-use buildings and a parking deck.

Dave Patzelt, president of construction for Sho-Deen Construction, unveiled a plan for Prairie Centre of St. Charles, a mixed-use development proposed for the former mall site between Prairie Street and Route 38 and east of the Jewel-Osco store on Randall Road.

The presentation was held Wednesday at the former Blockbuster Video building, 2025 Lincoln Highway, St. Charles, across the street from the mall site.

The site would have 42,500 square feet of retail, 30,100 square feet of restaurant space, 609 residential units and 1,291 parking spaces. Parking for the residential units would be located underground, Patzelt said.

Based on the feedback from residents during and after the meeting, Sho-Deen officials then will decide whether to proceed forward with the plan as it is, or make any modifications before submitting the concept plan for the St. Charles Plan Commission to review.

For the most part, nearly everyone seems to fit in one of those two categories. Either they keep a positive outlook on everything, always finding the bright side, or they tend to see the negative, having a more pessimistic nature.

Generally, I tend to be more of a glass-full person. Whenever times are tough, I try to find the good in the situation and make the most of it. And honestly, I truly believe that this is the best way to live. I recognize that not everybody is able to see the best in everything and give challenges the benefit of the doubt, but I do think that once we start to be more optimistic, life gets a whole lot better.

It’s the nature of pessimism to bring people down and make things seem worse than they already are. For example, let’s say you’re having a really rough day. You get a bad grade on a test at school; you’re fighting with your friend; and – worst of all – Starbucks is out of hot chocolate (at least I think that would be terrible).

The glass-half-empty individual would probably sit around and fume about the situation, focusing on everything wrong and letting bitterness seep into every other aspect of his or her life. On the other hand, the glass-half-full individual would try to see the good, perhaps attempting to make amends with the friend or sampling a new Starbucks beverage. The pessimist would fall asleep that night stewing in frustration while the optimist would fall asleep with mild disappointment tempered by hope.

I don’t know about you, but the second situation sounds far more preferable to me.

When things are already going awfully, why do something to make it even more difficult?

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel Wouldn’t it be better to try to make the best of it, finding some light in a dark time? I certainly think so.

I’m not minimizing the effect that trying circumstances can have on people; I’ve definitely been there many times. I understand that sometimes finding joy in struggles is the hardest thing in the world to do; it might be easier to wallow in sorrow. Everyone processes things differently, and optimism doesn’t always come naturally. But I’ve found that making an effort to stay positive has a better outcome in the long run. Though it might not be easy, it’s always the best route to take.

There’s a song from the Broadway musical “Annie” called “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” The title is self-explanatory, don’t you think? The orphans who perform the song have lives filled with much heartbreak, but they find joy in everything and – you guessed it – always smile. I like to think that without optimism, you’re not the best version of yourself ... but when you’re able to keep a smile on your face, even when it’s hard, your life will be that much more rewarding.

From now on, whether you consider yourself a glass-halfempty or glass-half-full person, I would encourage you to try and look at the bright side. It might take several tries, and I can assure you it won’t always be easy. But, in the end, I promise it will be worth it.

One bit of optimism can make all the difference.

How to solve middle-class indebtedness problem BLOOMBERG NEWS Of all the burdens weighing on the American middle class, one has grown immensely in recent years: debt. Absent reform, it presents one of the gravest threats to the prosperity of the typical family.

For much of the past century, easier access to credit benefited most Americans. It helped them buy what many see as the necessities of a middle-class life – a home, a car, an education. Those assets, in turn, gave them the stability and earning power they needed to build wealth.

Regular mortgage payments acted as a form of saving, making home ownership almost synonymous with financial security.

More recently, though, borrowing has taken on a very different character.

During the housing boom of the early 2000s, it became a way to bet on house prices,

or to turn home equity into the spending money needed to compensate for stagnant incomes. After the housing bust, the excesses shifted into other areas, such as auto loans designed to end in repossession, and student loans that leave graduates too indebted to move out of their parents’ home.

As of 2013, the average debt of middle-class families amounted to an estimated 122 percent of annual income, according to the Federal Reserve. It’s hard to say exactly how much debt is too much, but research and the lasting repercussions of the subprime mortgage crisis suggest the U.S. is pushing the limit.

What to do? First, stop subsidizing debt. Believe it or not, the government actually encourages excessive borrowing at taxpayer expense.

The income-tax deduction for interest paid on mortgage debt, for example, costs an

estimated $75 billion a year.

Second, consider changing the way loans are made.

There’s such a thing as predatory lending, and regulators should try harder to curb it.

Rules requiring lenders to consider borrowers’ ability to pay should be extended beyond mortgages – to auto loans, for example.

The government also could use its role in the mortgage and student loan markets to promote new types of debt contracts. If, for example, the principal value of mortgages were adjusted downward as house prices fell, borrowers would be better equipped to ride out crises. Shared-equity loans can take different forms; all of them make mortgage borrowing safer and are worth encouraging. Similarly, payments on student loans could be tied to income – an innovation that countries including Britain and Australia have already introduced.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Mejia has more than 25 years of restaurant experience, including being the head chef at the Rock Bottom restaurant and brewery in Warrenville for 14 years.

McCoy also worked at Rock Bottom, which is where he met Mejia.

Mondi was a regular customer at Rock Bottom and grew to know Mejia and McCoy. “This is a new experience for me, since we are owners,” Mejia said. “I no longer work for corporations.”

For example, the restaurant’s chicken chorizo enchiladas are served with a homemade verde sauce.

“Unlike sausage chorizo, this is a chicken chorizo, so it’s not real greasy,” McCoy said. “So, you get all the spice of a regular chorizo without all the fat and grease.”

Mejia’s personal touches can be found all over the menu. For example, he makes Abby’s French Toast with rustic Tuscan bread.

“I wanted to try something different,” Mejia said. “Cooking, to me, is a passion. It takes a while to learn perfectly.”

While they are eating, patrons at Abby’s can learn about the history of St. Charles. The restaurant’s walls are filled with historic pictures of the city.

“All the pictures came from the historical society,” Mondi said. “There’s a lot of history in St. Charles.”

Also on display is a poster from when The Who performed at the Jaguar club in August 1968. The club was located at 12 N. 3rd St., which now houses Alibi Bar & Grill.

Another thing that sets Abby’s apart from other restaurants is the coffee it serves.

“Our coffee is a Kona blend,” Mondi said. “We grind the beans fresh every day. We bring the beans from Hawaii.

A lot of people don’t realize that, of the 50 states, Hawaii is the only state that can produce coffee beans. So, most of the coffee comes from other countries like Colombia and Honduras.”

The restaurant also is family-friendly. McCoy’s 9-year-old son, Ayden, came up with the idea to have a book corner in the restaurant for kids.

Although Abby’s is located near the Filling Station Pub and Grill, it is not

trying to directly compete with that restaurant.

“We were very conscious of that when we designed our lunch menu,” Mondi said. “We do not have burgers.

We do not have wings. We do not have that typical bar lunch food.”

Instead of draft beers, Abby’s serves craft beers and cocktails.

What Abby’s does have is The Reuben, which features the restaurant’s signature corned beef piled high on fresh rye bread topped with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing.

Another lunch item is the BLT – Abby’s Way, which includes bacon, lettuce, tomato, seasoned cream cheese and two fried eggs. The menu also includes several salads.

PICTURE PERFECT ST. CHARLES PHOTOGRAPHER’S TRIP TO ANTARCTICA AN ‘AWE-INSPIRING’ EXPERIENCE

T

o beat the brutal Chicago winter, many people escape to well-known warmer locales, but local photographer Al DaValle decided that February would be a good time to visit Antarctica.

“While you guys were having weather that was 10 below zero, I was in Antarctica and it was 40,” DaValle said with a laugh, while interweaving stories from his monthlong adventure in the southern hemisphere.

As the owner of DaValle Fine Art, a photography and portraiture studio in St. Charles, DaValle traveled to Antarctica with Toronto-based company Luminous Landscapes, which offers photography workshops with renowned instructors, such as Arte Wolfe – one of America’s preeminent nature photographers. “[Luminous Landscapes takes] a bunch of photographers down to Antarctica in the winter – our winter, their summer – and it’s really difficult to get into, so I had to sign up like two years in advance,” he said, adding that he and his wife, Pam, decided to extend the trip a few more weeks in order to visit Chile, Argentina and South America’s Patagonia region.

It took 15 flights to travel round trip from Chicago to Antarctica, and three days to get to the isolated continent, where DaValle said he spent six days capturing more than 16,000 images.

Kane County Chronicle features editor Kara Silva got to sit down with DaValle at his photography studio in St. Charles, where he spoke about his trip and shared photos from his “awe-inspiring” journey.

Kara Silva: Why did you take

this trip?

Al DaValle: Curiosity. To see a place that I’ve never seen before and that few people get to see. I love traveling, and I now have the ability to do it.

What was your roughly 20 different countries. reaction after having wanted to visit this place after so long?

DaValle: It was awe-inspiring.

The light is beautiful down there. It was summertime, so there are roughly 20 hours of light, and the sun is always low on the horizon because it’s so far south. It’s like 20 hours of sunset almost, and everywhere you look there are these wonderful ice formations ... and the wildlife.

The reason I was going was to shoot the landscape; I don’t do wildlife. But, I got [to Antarctica], and a funny thing happened. One of the instructors that was there – this was a workshop so you had some good instructors there – was [Wolfe]; he’s probably one of the world’s most well-known nature photographers alive today. I got to shoot a whole day with [Wolfe].

People always asked me before I left, ‘What are you going to shoot in Antarctica’ because it’s just snow and mountains.

[They ask] ‘Are you going to shoot penguins?’

I told them, ‘If I don’t see a single penguin, I will be fine.’

Some of my best images are of penguins, and I didn’t go there to shoot penguins.

[Laughs.]

Silva: What are some of the highlights of the trip?

DaValle: It was really a great staff of instructors. This is going to sound cliché, but it was just the pristine beauty of it, just knowing that you’re looking at something that hasn’t changed for millions of years or is changing slowly with global

warming, but in terms of topology and the basic fundamental structure of what you’re looking at, it’s just ancient, pristine and untouched.

Silva: Did you believe in global warming before – not that you can witness it on a weeklong trip – but after meeting the scientists that were [in Antarctica], did it cement what you already believe?

DaValle: Yeah, you can’t go there for a week and say, ‘I saw global warming.’ When we were in South America, down near Patagonia, we went to a little place called El Calafate … and we went to a couple glaciers there where you can really see [the effects of global warming].

You can see a tree line up on a mountainside and then, down below, its all rubble where the glacier used to be, and all that is left is destruction, if you will, on the mountainside. But I’m definitely a ‘believer.’

Silva: When you were in Antarctica, I don’t know if touristy is the right word, but did you feel as though it is becoming more touristy?

DaValle: It is increasing.

Antarctica is ruled by international consortium. It’s not really a country, per se. There’s a treaty of kind of how all of the resources will be shared and how the land is governed. And the U.S. is part of that treaty, and they’re trying to encourage more people to visit, so people are aware of what’s down there.

So, when it comes time to pay for something to protect it, people will have a comprehension

When you’re a tourist you come back, kind of as an ambassador for the continent. So, when you [go home], you kind of have a responsibility to talk about what’s down there and what needs to be protected, because so few people get a chance to see it.

Silva: What was the takeaway from this trip?

DaValle: The immensity of the place … . It really gives you a sense of the power of nature to create this. This is just one little piece of one little planet in one

little solar system in one little galaxy. It really makes you go down that path of thinking like that, you know.

Silva: I always like to ask this question to people who travel a lot – why do you travel?

DaValle: We lived in Europe from ’96 to ’98, and that opened up our eyes to the whole world and just meeting people from different cultures. I get such joy from meeting different people and seeing how common we really all are in terms of what our interests are, our needs are, our fears and aspirations are as people.

Silva: Is there anything you’d like to add about travel in general?

DaValle: I think it’s critical that parents get their kids out and see foreign countries as early as possible so that they get the sense that the U.S., as great as it is, isn’t all there is. And I think that having a world view for a basis of all of your ongoing learning and living is crucial.

Travel does that for people.

‘Unnatural to be neutral’ HOF manager La Russa, now D’backs exec, still competitive

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Tony La Russa took the dais in the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark super suite Wednesday evening and immediately remarked about his “ceiling-high” blood pressure.

No, the noted vegetarian wasn’t setting up a punchline about the Cougars’ Heart Attack Burger. He still had an eye fixed on his iPad, which was broadcasting the Arizona Diamondbacks’ matinee against the Washington Nationals.

Arizona’s chief baseball officer since May 2014, La Russa reinforced his still-churning competitiveness while addressing fans of the D’backs’ first-year Class-A affiliate, the Cougars. Before leaving to watch the club host the Burlington Bees, the Hall of Fame manager hoped aloud the Cougars wouldn’t need to play the bottom of the ninth.

“It was very unnatural to be neutral,” La Russa said.

Apart from a brief stint working for Major League Baseball after his 2011 retirement, La Russa didn’t know nonpartisanship long during a 33-season managerial career.

Working from August 1979 to October 2011, he guided the White Sox, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals, earning the third most victories all-time while winning World Series with Oakland in 1989 and St. Louis in 2006 and 2011.

La Russa, 70, joined the D’backs organization about a year ago. Although the iPad offered an ongoing prop during Wednesday’s media session and the Cougars’ “Out to the Ballgame II” speaker series, he’s been known to leave it at home

given the duties of his newly-created position.

“The most important responsibility that I’ve got, I think, is to identify what players and pitchers we have that you can see playing in October,” La Russa said.

“And then watching the way the team plays, so that you play in October. With that in mind, I need to spend a lot of time with the Major League club.”

Venturing to see the Cou-

gars – a happening coordinated by owner Dr. Bob Froehlich, who identified an easy rapport with La Russa from the start – allowed fans to see “a living baseball icon,” in radio broadcaster/emcee Joe Brand’s words.

About 120 fans attended the event, paying $95 for the hourlong program with Froehlich and La Russa, a buffet dinner and a super suite ticket to the game.

Froehlich said the night was

sold out, a distinction that last season’s inaugural “Out to the Ballgame” featuring Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts did not boast.

Wearing a Cardinals jersey and cap, St. Charles resident Mike Schulte, 52, a native Missourian, relished the opportunity to meet and greet the longtime manager of his boyhood team. La Russa managed the Cardinals from 1996 to 2011.

“Tony, he’s a [heck] of a

leader,” Schulte said. “He’s a game strategist. He knows how to play the game. He’s a tough guy. I like him.”

Even Schulte’s wife, Kim, a Cubs fan who surprised him with in mid-April with tickets for his birthday, lauded La Russa.

“I really respect Tony as a manager and what he’s accomplished and just his methodology and his management style,” Kim Schulte said.

Several in attendance embraced La Russa’s newfound comedic side. Often guarded with the media and in other public appearances during his career, he unleashed a few one-liners and kept a running monologue with the Diamondbacks game – a 9-6 loss – as he spoke.

Eventually telling Brand he would yield to a few more fan questions than were initially planned, La Russa entertained one of his first, about his new position, with a quip.

“If it doesn’t work, I just pass the buck,” La Russa grinned. “If it works, I take the credit. Like when I managed.”

But a big double play with the bases loaded to get out a jam in the second sparked the senior right-hander to lead North with a complete game, 6-0 win over Batavia to take the first two games of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division baseball series.

Hubbe finished off his complete game in complete control, but not before getting a visit from coach Todd Genke early in the game.

“It more just pumped me up,” Hubbe said. “I had good defense behind me all day and once I talked to coach, I took my time and took a few deep breaths. After that, everything started to come together.”

The Butler-bound senior retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced, with five strikeouts during that stretch.

Genke was well aware of the struggles Hubbe had early in games this year, and al-

though he said taking Hubbe out of the game had crossed his mind, he wanted to let the right-hander work out of the trouble.

“Baseball is a funny game,” Genke said. “His first pitch hits a batter, but to Sam’s credit, he hung in there and got stronger as the game went on. That is a true measure of a competitor.

We got early runs for him, too, which al- Sam ways helps.”

Hubbe North (22-4, St. Charles 16-3 UEC Riv- North pitcher er) scored in the first inning for the second straight day against the Bulldogs, this time on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Kyle Novotney.

The North Stars doubled that lead when Brendan Joyce singled in Tyler Madsen with two outs in the second.

Batavia (12-16, 11-9) coach Matt Holm thought the past two days were not only similar because of the zeroes in his team’s run column, but also because of a few defensive plays by North shortstop Zach

Mettetal.

“He’s done it two days in a row on us,” Holm said. “We put some balls in play again today, and he made a nice catch and started a couple of double plays for them.”

“Zach is really starting to learn how to play the position,” Genke said. “It’s a luxury to have the leader of your infield be as strong defensively as he has been. He played with us as a freshman last year, and he has come a long way.”

Mettetal, now a sophomore, has always told himself one thing, which has aided his maturity defensively.

“I have always kind of had the mentality that if I’m not hitting well, I better do my job in the field,” Mettetal said.

“Our pitching and defense have been really strong the past few days, and we’ve had to battle, but those things can make all the difference.”

North has now won eight straight games and its confidence level is at an all-time high. The North Stars’ hitting has been a mainstay for most of the season, but with the strong pitching and defense of late, Mettetal and his

teammtes think North will be a very tough out come postseason time.

“Everyone is really focused, and we take each game very business-like,” Mettetal said. “We really just keep things simple and it’s worked out well up until this point.”

After turning his start around, there was a bit of doubt that with 98 pitches through six innings, Hubbe may be finished for the day.

But after North scored four more runs in the sixth, with two-run singles by Luke Corcoran and Cory Wright, Genke let the senior finish the game. “[Sam] came up to me and said, ‘Coach, I want to go back out there,’ ” Genke said. “For him to go out there and shut out a team like Batavia on our home field is a real special performance. I think a win like this can really turn around his confidence moving forward.”

Nussbaum, in his first year as MWL president, has been the league’s attorney since 1993.

He, too, took a lighthearted route when asked whether he had talked shop with fellow counselor La Russa, who also has a law degree.

“I haven’t done that yet,” Nussbaum said. “He’s done a little more in baseball than I’ve done. And maybe I’ve done a little more in the law than he has.”

Once a player-coach in the minors, La Russa managed 184 minor league games with White Sox affiliates

Knoxville and Iowa from 1978-79 before White Sox brass promoted him to guide the major league club in early August 1979.

He remained as a manager for the majority of the next three-plus decades, retiring after the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series championship season.

La Russa’s lone lull came in the summer of 1986, when he endured about a monthlong hiatus between being fired by then-White Sox general manager Ken “Hawk” Harrelson and Oakland bringing him aboard.

La Russa’s final appearance as a major league player came on opening day 1973, when he scored the winning run for the Cubs as a pinch-runner for Ron Santo.

Always cerebral, he

figured as an athlete that managing might one day be in the cards.

“If you’re paying attention as a player, you think it’s you. You have an idea about when you bunt, how you do this on defense, handle pitching,” La Russa said. “But when you have a chance to where you’re not thinking all that much about yourself and you’re thinking about the team, you see what a broad set of responsibilities the manager has. The physical side, the fundamentals, the mental side. And he’s doing it for individuals and a team. There’s a lot more involved than you know as a player.”

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek was La Russa’s second baseman for the 2005 Cardinals. Although he later joked about Johnny

Carson’s “Carnac” routine during an anecdote, La Russa did not purport to foresee Grudzielanek’s managerial aspirations.

Given Grudzielanek’s passion for baseball, however, La Russa said it didn’t surprise him.

With his iPad and wit nearby, La Russa demonstrated his own fervor Wednesday through both body language and the spoken word. He beamed at the chance for another challenge, and the D’backs position offered it.

“You kind of look at what you know, where you think you can help, and then you make up a team of people that cover everything else,” La Russa said. “So I’ve really been excited.”

Unlike parts of his address, that was no joke.

NOTEWORTHY Kaneland surging at right time Recently channeling his team’s 2015 season checklist, Kaneland softball coach Peter Goff virtually marked one box before moving to the next.

“Our first goal was to win the conference, and now that this is kind of done, we had tough games headed into seeding,” Goff said.

“Maybe not a lot of people know who we are, and who knows where Peter Goff we fit in.”

Kaneland Along with the rest softball of their brethren in coach IHSA Class 3A and 4A, the Knights learned of their postseason schedule Wednesday afternoon.

The forecast for Kaneland: A spot in the 3A Lemont Regional and a No. 5 seed in the Montini Sectional, the fruits of winning the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title.

With Wisconsin-bound ace Angie Morrow continuing a strong stretch and a versatile attack jelling, too, the Knights liked their chances no matter where they went.

Still, there’s always that soothing sense of closure once the postseason

brackets are finalized.

“The thing is that we’re starting to get some key hitting from people. Angie’s been spot on here in the conference and she’s had some good defense to back her up,” Goff said.

Goff especially lauded senior second baseman Morgan Sikon’s contributions to the surge. Limited by a tender elbow in the first few weeks of the season, Sikon delivered two hits and three RBIs to the Knights’ 6-1 win against Morris on May 6, which officially clinched the conference crown.

Sikon contributed two hits to Tuesday’s 13-0 road rout of NI Big 12 crossover foe Rochelle.

“In that cold weather, we kind of had to wait and wait,” Goff said. “She [has] hit the ball and seen the ball really well … and just really has improved at second base and really come into her own, and she’s really worked hard at it.”

Along with stressing the importance of strengthening the Knights’ profile, Goff admitted there were some question marks about other teams in the sectional.

Kaneland headed south and east instead of north or west, its customary postseason direction in recent

seasons.

Although semi-familiar St. Francis (No. 3), Wheaton Academy (No. 8), Aurora Central Catholic (No. 10) and Rosary (No. 11) are part of the sectional, Kaneland will open regionals against 12th-seeded Elmwood Park.

“A lot of those [other] schools, I have no idea where they’re at or who they are,” Goff said. “They’re a lot of Chicago schools in there.”

Tri-Cities shuffle Class 4A seeding scrambled the Tri-Cities schools for the postseason. St. Charles North (No. 2) and St. Charles East (No. 4) are among the top seeds in the Rolling Meadows Sectional, with the North Stars (Glenbard West) and Saints (Conant) assigned to separate regionals in that complex.

Geneva (No. 7) and Batavia (No. 14) are part of the Downers Grove South Sectional and playing in the West Aurora and Oswego regionals, respectively.

With the way the bracket is configured, it’s possible one 4A state semifinal could be an all- Tri-Cities affair.

North girls water polo falls in sectionals

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Two weeks ago, Geneva junior Emily Plocinski tossed a two-hit shutout against the Batavia softball team.

The Bulldogs resolved to not let it happen again during Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division game, tagging Plocinski for nine runs on nine hits in five innings en route to a 9-7 win.

“We had a lot of energy,” Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos said. “We came through with some big, Emily clutch hits.”

W i t h h e r Plocinski team trailing, 5-3, entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Batavia leadoff hitter Ryanne Rokos slapped a double down the left field line.

She advanced to third on a single from shortstop Elyse Burns, who stole second base.

First baseman Natalie Offutt hit a ball right through Vikings second baseman Kate Geary’s legs, with both runners scoring on the error.

With two on and one out, Batavia third baseman Christina Karius slapped a single to right field, scoring Rachael Lovestrand for the go-ahead run.

Karius went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Batavia (13-15, 8-10 UEC River).

“I was really nervous going up there, but I knew I had to get my job done and get them in, so I tried to relax as much as I could and it worked,” Karius said.

Batavia scored three more times in the inning and batted around.

Geneva (15-7, 11-5) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit by scoring five times in the top of the third. But the Vikings left eight runners on base throughout the game, includ-

ing a pair in the top of the first.

“I really thought that Batavia was better than us from the first inning on, even though they didn’t score a run in the first couple,” Vikings coach Greg Dierks said.

“They were more aggressive and a little hungrier than we were, and they stuck it to us.

“Their approach put us on our heels, and we responded once but when you’re going into the seventh inning and you’ve only scored in one of the previous six, that’s not going to get it done. Credit to their approach for that, and we have to be a little bit better at the same time.”

Batavia’s bottom of the order stood out in the game, with the sixth- through ninthplace hitters contributing five RBIs. Ashley McNamara drove a two-run, two-out double off the right field fence in the second inning to give Batavia the early lead, while Tara Zufan went 2 for 3 with a two-run single in the fifth to help open up the lead.

“It was nice to see them come through with the hits,” Castellanos said. “Our production has been a little bit low down there but that’s huge, to have those girls hitting at the bottom of the order.

Once those girls hit the ball down there and the top of the lineup comes through, we’re going to score a lot of runs.”

With a season marked by inconsistency at points and with the previous loss to the Vikings in the back of their minds, Batavia knew Wednesday’s win would help down the stretch of the regular season.

“We knew they were going to come out strong and that we couldn’t let that get us down,” Karius said. “It’s a 0-0 start and we were ready to play this time. It boosts our confidence a lot. We’ve had a little bit of a rough patch but this is definitely going to help us with our last few games.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE NAPERVILLE – The St. Charles North girls water polo team closed the gap against Neuqua Valley on Wednesday.

It still wasn’t quite enough to salvage the North Stars’ season.

North lost, 6-5, to the host Warriors in a Neuqua Valley Sectional quarterfinal.

Neuqua Valley blanked the North Stars when the teams met in the same pool in Upstate Eight Conference play in early April.

“The girls played really well,” North coach Nick Engel said. “We were able to come out and score five goals, which was much better than our first meeting with them. … We saw improvement. The girls did a great job. They played as a team and played great defense.”

Katie Quinn contributed two goals and seven steals for 17-7-1 North. Katie DiFiglio, Monica Guyett and Sarah Gibson also scored, while goalkeeper Claire Rich made seven saves.

“We graduated some really good players last year and we had a lot of girls step up and fill roles that they hadn’t been asked to do in the past,” Engel said.

St. Charles East suffered a season-ending, 17-2, loss to Sandburg in another Neuqua Valley quarterfinal. Alexandra Kos scored twice for the Saints.

Szalek drove in two more runs for the Cadets.

Aurora Central Catholic 4, Riverside-Brookfield 2: At Aurora, Sean Sinisko earned the victory, striking out eight in five innings for 20-7 ACC. Matt Rahn got the save, and Chris Saltijeral was 2 for 4.

While Eustace found it a little easier to adjust to the college lifestyle during the offseason, now that the season is in full swing, baseball’s presenting plenty of off-the-field challenges, as well.

“Honestly, it’s been the off-the-field stuff, especially during the season, for me,” he said. “In the offseason, in the fall, it’s a lot easier. You go to class, you’re done. You have so much time to get everything done. But especially for the first month of the season where it’s too cold to play at home, and we’re just traveling around going from airport to airport, traveling every single week-

end. I think it’s kind of tough, especially when you’re missing class.”

But while things maybe haven’t gone as he hoped so far, Eustace has the right outlook. He’s looking to improve, saying he’s working on every facet of the game he can get better at, and he’s even learned to better appreciate the sport he’s been playing for much of his life.

“It was pretty tough, but I think I’ve gotten a lot more mentally tough as college has gone through,” he said.

“The game of baseball just beats you down mentally. When you’re failing seven, eight times out of 10, it’s pretty tough, especially when the hits don’t

The transition from high school to college is a tough one, experiencing something you’ve never experienced before.

That’s going double for Batavia product Laren Eustace, who in addition to getting used to the usual college newness is going through something he’s never experienced before on the baseball field: He’s not playing very much.

Eustace played pretty much every day in four years at Batavia, he said, but as an Indiana freshman outfielder getting his first taste of collegiate baseball, things aren’t coming as easy. Things have gotten better as the season has gone on, but getting used to coming off the bench has been a challenge. He’s appeared in just 27 of the Hoosiers’ 49 games, and he’s batting just .207 with only six hits on the season.

“It was a lot tougher in the beginning of the season, not playing every single day like I did in high school,” Eustace said. “But I’ve just learned to be a lot better teammate, just pick everyone up, do whatever I can to help the team out. And whenever I can see the field, just help the team out as much as I can.

“A lot of the older guys helped me through. They picked me up sometimes. Some days are a little harder than others not playing, but I’ve just grown and learned that I have to get

fall. It’s just a grind.

“Just showing up every day with a positive attitude. That’s what I’ve learned. … If you think negative thoughts, it just kind of perpetuates in everything you do on the field to off the field. If you show up with a positive mindset, things are a lot better and you just enjoy it more. I’ve learned to enjoy the game of baseball a lot more.”

Eustace might not be playing every day now, but that’s about to change.

He’s spending the summer in Vermont, where he’ll play for the Vermont Mountaineers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

He’ll be joined by three Indiana teammates, including two from the Chicago area, and he’ll get a chance to work on his skills. The Mountaineers boast a handful of former players now playing Major League Baseball, including current White Sox second baseman Micah Johnson.

“I’ve never been out there before.

I’m going out there with three other guys on Indiana, including my roommate. … It will be very fun, I think,” Eustace said. “There are a couple older guys that played out in Vermont, and they said they liked it there. It’ll be a good experience.”

College is a tough transition for everyone, athlete or not. Though with a great attitude and the hard work he’s putting in, it seems like Eustace is heading in the right direction.

Dear Abby: This past week I read to the students at a local grammar school. I read to kindergarteners, second- and fourth-graders. The children were great, quiet and attentive. They asked insightful questions about the stories.

A couple of co-workers are now sick with similar symptoms. Is she being rude, or am I oversensitive?

The best way to respond to the woman is not to respond at all.

The children were divided into two groups: children whose skin tests showed that they were already sensitive to peanuts, and children who weren’t.

Within each of those groups, the children were further divided into two groups. The parents in one group were asked to make sure their children didn’t eat any peanuts, peanut butter or other peanut-based products until age 5. Parents in the other group were asked to give their children a peanut-based snack called Bamba or peanut butter three times a week until age 5.

The results were surprising and dramatic. Of children who were not already sensitive to peanuts, a peanut allergy developed in only 1.9 percent of children

Eating peanuts may reduce risk of developing peanut allergy Dear Doctor K: My baby has an egg allergy. His doctor says this increases his risk of developing a peanut allergy. She recommends avoiding peanut products for now.

But another doctor gave me the opposite advice. What should I do?

Dear Reader: If your child has a food allergy, you may well agonize over the safety of his every meal and snack. And no wonder. Food allergies can cause severe – even deadly – allergic reactions. Peanut allergies can cause bad rashes, severe difficulty breathing, a dangerous drop in blood pressure and other dangerous results.

But a study recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine offers some hope for parents of infants who may be headed toward a peanut allergy.

That hope is peanuts.

For the study, researchers recruited 640 infants ages 4 to 11 months. These infants all had an egg allergy or eczema. (Eczema is an allergic disorder that affects the skin.) Both eczema and an egg allergy make it more likely that a child will develop a peanut allergy.

So, the kids in the study all were at higher risk for developing a peanut allergy than most kids.

who ate peanut products, compared with 13.7 percent of those who didn’t eat peanuts.

Even more surprising, of the kids who were already sensitive to peanuts, a peanut allergy developed in only 10.6 percent of children who regularly ate peanut products, compared with 35.3 percent of those who didn’t regularly eat peanut products.

In other words, feeding peanuts to young children who are at high risk for developing a peanut allergy can actually protect them from developing that allergy later in life. Somehow, it makes a child’s immune system more “accepting” of peanuts and less likely to respond violently. A peanut diet does not offer perfect protection against a peanut allergy developing later in life, but it does reduce the risk.

What does this new research mean for parents? If your infant is allergy-prone, ask his or her pediatrician about adding peanuts to your child’s diet now, to prevent a peanut allergy down the line.

The only way that you can do your part in reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents is to eliminate drinking all alcoholic beverages.

One can of beer or one 8-ounce glass of wine or 1-and-a-half ounces of 86-proof liquor are equally intoxicating. The legal definition of intoxication is based on “blood-alcohol concentration,” and you are legally drunk if the concentration reaches a 0.08 level (in most states). But for drivers or drinkers who are less experienced, a level of 0.05 or even lower can be dangerous!

Teenagers can get into a lot of trouble because of alcohol – even teenagers who don’t drink. A new view of the statistics shows where part of the problem lies, and can lead to better communication between adults and teenagers.

Teenagers are in the high-risk group. People between the ages of 16 and 24 represent only 20 percent of the licensed drivers of our country, but that same group is involved in 42 percent of all the alcohol-related fatal crashes.

I didn’t mean to give you a sermon on the evils of alcohol, but I would be remiss if I left you thinking that it would be OK to drink beer because you think beer is better and safer to drink than wine and hard liquor. It isn’t!

In bridge, we have suit fits, about which some players have preconceptions. In this deal, North-South have a 5-3 spade fit and a 4-4 heart fit. Which is preferable?

Today we will study the 5-3 fit, tomorrow the 4-4.

Against four spades, West leads off with the diamond ace. What should happen?

In the auction, after North jumped to two no-trump and South rebid three hearts, North should have raised hearts, but gave preference to spades. South continued with three no-trump to describe his 5-4-2-2 distribution, and North removed to four spades because he was worried about diamonds. That was understandable, although here, because diamonds were 4-4, three no-trump would have been a lucky make. In contrast, four spades was an unlucky fail.

At trick one, East signaled enthusiastically with his diamond 10. When encouraging, play the highest card you can afford -- no half measures. West cashed his diamond king, then continued with another diamond, which South ruffed.

Everything looked easy to South; surely he had five spades, four hearts and one club.

But after drawing trumps, he started on the hearts. When West discarded on the second round, declarer led a low club toward his queen, but his luck was still out.

West had the king and South had to lose one heart, two diamonds and one club.

Floyd Leg fits naturally with the hip

By REBECCA POWERS Special to The Washington Post Take two young guys with college degrees in architecture and public policy. Mix in frequent moving from apartment to apartment, and you have design inspiration. Such were the ingredients that led to the Floyd Leg, a surprisingly stylish metal clamp that solves a furnishing dilemma for urbanites and millennials around the world.

After Kyle Hoff, 27, received a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and became professionally transient, he quickly realized that tables resist relocation. Traveling light means unwieldy furniture ends up on Craigslist.

That observation became Hoff’s necessity-is-the-mother-of-invention moment, and he began toying with creating table legs to-go.

“It was born of thinking, ‘There has to be a better

way,’ “ Hoff said. “It wasn’t so much like there was a moment and the clamp was it. It was the broader idea of furniture and how people live right now.”

When Hoff left a large Chicago architectural firm for work in Detroit, he (easily) brought his prototype leg along for the ride. His job change and move were about a desire to work on ideas of a small focus that could, as he says, “come to fruition of my own power.”

Enter Detroit co-worker Alex O’Dell, 24, a Michigan native with a degree in public policy who had been working on films about people living in cities. O’Dell thought the clamps were practical – and there was a good story behind them.

“The legs are a lot about expressing your creativity,” O’Dell said. “They had a lot of potential in terms of how we live in cities.”

“We got in the car and drove 15 miles to meet face to face with our manufacturers in metro Detroit,” Hoff said.

The resulting product, named for Hoff’s father, grandfather and great-grandfather – all named Floyd and all steel-mill workers in his native Youngstown, Ohio – is gaining traction.

“The colors are on the accent chairs, pillows and ottomans,” Dwyer said. “Blue is a big accent color. I find the accent patterns to have less colors within the fabrics, as in twotones and not multiple with a

lot of colors. The color for 2015 is Marsala, which is a great, very usable color. I do not see many patterns on upholstery except at the higher end.”

Bigger sectionals, smaller dining tables

In the living and family rooms, shoppers are looking for cleaner and simpler living, and big comfy sectionals offer plenty of space for relaxing and lounging.

“The sectional business is huge. You can do so much with sectionals today whether it’s a space issue or filling a room with maximum seating. The options are endless and can be customized to work in any

home or room setting,” Dwyer said.

In the eating area, “formal dining sets are smaller than the old, huge, grand sets. I’m seeing that people are moving away from arm chairs and using side chairs and benches more.

Upholstered side chairs with nail-head trim are very popular now,” Dwyer said. In casual dining, “mixing metal and wood is very trendy, along with faux concrete and UV table tops. The industrial look is hot right now. Metal dining chairs and backless stools also seem to be trendy,” Dwyer said.
