Aldermen look to stabilize electric rates

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended the city use up to an additional $2 million in electric utility reserves to keep the city’s electric rates stable.

The full City Council is set to vote on the recommendation at its meeting Monday.

Aldermen already have authorized the use of $2 million in surplus electric reserves for rate stabilization.

“The further use of reserves would provide additional relief during times of volatility,” Batavia Finance Director Peggy Colby said in a memo to aldermen. “If the full $2 million is available and is used, then the city would have allotted $4 million of the $5 million towards rate relief.

Any balance that is not used will be designated for use in a future budget.”

Colby told aldermen the reserve funds will be replenished at some point, but she didn’t see that happening any-

time soon.

“I don’t see our costs going down anytime soon,” she said.

Aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues.

The hike raises electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half-cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax. In addition, the option would apply different percentage increases to energy and demand for commer-

cial and industrial customers.

City staff had recommended the option.

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the option would provide sufficient revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities.

Under the option, residents this year will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates, plus a $4-a-month increase to the customer charge.

In 2015, residents also will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates.

Where did you grow up? As a kid, I lived in Chicago and moved to Rockford after that.

Who would play you in the movie of your life? When I was a kid, I loved the “Star Wars” movies, and I always thought Harrison Ford was an awesome actor. If he would do it, I would want Harrison Ford to play my part.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? The first thing I wanted to be was a school bus driver.

When did you stop wanting to be a bus driver? When I started wanting to be a baseball player, also as a kid.

What’s the best thing about being the president of the Lions Club?

Gaining an appreciation for everything people do down at the club. And seeing all of the ways that we can help

other people.

When did you know you wanted to join the Lions Club? My friend Jeff Miller approached me and said, hey we need help at the park and asked for help putting up fencing. … I went down with Jeff and met Joe Kryszak. It was raining cats and dogs, just pouring buckets of water. We set up fencing for hours and hours. … I guess it was just fun hanging out with Jeff and Joe, and at that point, I didn’t even know what the club was all about. … I worked a couple of events and found out more about what the Lions Club does, and I saw it was good for the community.

What is your favorite local restaurant? Eddie Gaedel’s Is there a book or movie you’d recommend? I thought “World War Z” was a pretty good read. … For the movie, I’ve seen “Frozen” a couple of times. It’s a good movie. I’ve got two kids, and we’ve seen “Frozen.”

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? My ancestors came over on the Mayflower.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A wine and canvas studio is headed to Geneva, with an opening planned next week for The Chilled Palette, at 500 S. Third St., Geneva.

Owner Miriam Kuta is awaiting the Geneva City Council’s final approval of her beer and wine bar liquor license – expected on Monday – and plans to open up shop the next day on May 20.

“I love Geneva,” said Kuta, a Crystal Lake resident. “And I think people down there would welcome something like this.”

The business is built around the idea of having a drink and painting for recreation. Kuta said it would be available for private parties, such as ladies nights out, bachelor parties, children’s parties and date nights.

Her website, which still is under construction, also would offer a schedule of paintings that anyone could attend, she said.

“Every night is a different painting. You pick the painting you like, and somebody is walking you through it step by step,” Kuta said.

“And in two hours, you have painted a 16-by-20 canvas.

It’s your own canvas.”

Kuta said the studio is large, at 2,200 square feet, so it can be divided up to accommodate more than one party.

Oberweis: $39.5M allocated for area road improvements

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The Illinois Department of Transportation has allocated more than $39.5 million for road improvements in the 25th Senate District during the fiscal year starting July 1, State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, said in a news release.

There are nine local projects included in the state’s Highway Improvement Program in the upcoming fiscal year, including $6.8 million for intersection improvements on U.S. 30 at Dugan Road. A total of $2.6 million also has been slated for preliminary engineering costs for a project on U.S. 30, from west of Dugan Road to west of Route 47. Another project on U.S. 30 at Dugan Road will cost $455,000 for construction engineering costs, according to the news release.

The release said the sixyear plan also includes an additional $80.9 million for local roads and bridges.

“I think it’s important to maintain our infrastructure, mainly our roads and bridges,” Oberweis said in a phone interview Tuesday.

Oberweis said the road improvements will be beneficial for area motorists, especially the large wave of tourists expected in summer 2016. That

Traffic was a major inhibitor on the existing roads when Rich Harvest Farms hosted the 2009 Solheim Cup, Oberweis said.

A long-term project that will be essential for the area is the expansion of Route 47 from two to four lanes from Sugar Grove to I-80 in Morris.

Some parts of that project are currently in progress, Oberweis said.

Oberweis said the state funds come from revenues that are specifically dedicated and earmarked for road construction, and cannot be used to pay other outstanding financial obligations.

In a phone interview, Oberweis said that these are times when “our state budget is very tight” because of poor, long-term budget planning.

Kuta said people are surprised that she does not consider herself an artist.

“I’m a recreational artist,” Kuta said. “That’s what this is, recreational art. It’s healthy for people to create their own thing and not be judged on it. You do not have to be an artist to do this.”

On a date night, the couple would each work on the same painting, but once completed, it would be a diptych, which is a series of two paintings.

“And when they hang it, it’s one painting,” Kuta said.

This is not Kuta’s first business. She said she owned a paint-your-own ceramic studio, which she sold and a candy store, which she closed six years ago, both in Crystal Lake.

Kuta said she has been coming to Geneva for 35 years. A brother and a friend live in Geneva, and her mother lives in Wayne.

But besides that, she chose Geneva for her business because of the downtown.

“They do a lot with the downtown. Everybody I know loves to go to Geneva,” Kuta said. “The Chilled Palette will be a good fit for what is there already.”

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Four St. Charles School District 303 teachers this year shared a successful collaboration with hundreds of teachers statewide and nationwide.

The effort, called “Engage Your Body, Engage Your Brain,” details various activities that can be done in physical education classes that incorporate Common Core Standards. Teachers Erin Sabyan, Michelle Poelsterl, Julie Misner and Christie Griffin are the teachers behind the work.

The teachers had an audience of about 300 fellow educators at the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance state convention in November at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. In April, the group took the presentation to the 2014 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance National Convention in St. Louis.

The teachers were thrilled to present in front of so many people and receive positive feedback. Their audience at the national conference included teachers from Kansas, Florida, Hawaii and other states.

years already, but now it is a bigger part of teacher evaluations and at the state level.

Misner hoped the presentation showed teachers that they don’t have to completely redo their lesson plans, but just dig deeper into the activities they already do to include Common Core Standards.

One of Misner’s biggest successes was a physical activity journal her second-grade students completed. Each week, a different student took home a stuffed animal version of Norton the eagle, the school mascot. The students were required to write about the exercises they did with the eagle and presented them to the class Friday.

“There is a huge speaking and listening component to that, but we were also able to tie in the writing piece as well,” Misner said.

At Anderson Elementary, the teachers use a relay for kindergartners and first-graders that incorporates the Dr. Seuss book “Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!” Students wait to hear the word “go,” to proceed in the activity, so this activity focuses on the common core skills for speaking and listening.

Geneva to conduct water flow tests on fire hydrants GENEVA – Geneva will be conducting water flow tests on the city’s east side fire hydrants between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21 to May 23.

The testing provides information to Geneva’s fire and water departments on water supplies

available for firefighters and where water infrastructure upgrades may be needed.

Geneva residents living east of the Fox River might experience rusty water during or immediately after the testing.

The water is safe to drink, but residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes to flush them out if they notice any discoloration.

GENEVA – Kane County seeks a new Animal Control administrator as officials address an ongoing situation with a second employee in that agency, county officials said Tuesday.

Interim Administrator Robert Sauceda resigned from his position May 7. County officials previously had said there was a personnel matter involving Sauceda, but no specifics were given.

After the Kane County Board meeting Tuesday, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said there is no separation agreement or severance regarding Sauceda’s departure. He also said there was a second employee involved.

“That situation is ongoing,” McMahon said.

McMahon said that person is still employed by the county, but he would not comment on the individual’s work status.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the county is seeking applications for Animal Control administrator.

He said internal and external

candidates will be considered.

“It’s all-comers,” Lauzen said. “We want to find the most qualified person.”

Posted May 8 on the county website, the job description for the senior management position includes such minimum requirements as experience in local, state or federal government; proficiency in oral and written communication; three years’ experience in providing Animal Control or a closely related public or community health program; and a master’s of business management or a bachelor’s degree in public administration or related field.

The listed salary range is $65,000 to $70,000 for 40-plus hours a week. The application deadline is May 23.

Meanwhile, Lauzen said, someone from Barb Jeffers’ staff is filling in. Jeffers is the executive director of the health department, who oversees Animal Control.

In other Animal Control news, the County Board tabled its decision to change the agency’s name to Kane County Animal Care and Control – an idea brought forward by Sauceda.

Grove, noted the resolution was proposed by someone no longer employed with the county.

She expressed concerns about the cost of changing the name on such items as signs, vehicles and letterhead.

“This is not the right time,” Taylor said.

Deborah Allan, R-Elgin, said the new name could be phased in as supplies and equipment are used or replaced.

She and Monica Silva, D-Aurora, said the new name better describes Animal Control’s mission, which includes caring for creatures. While searching for a new administrator, the county should look for someone to embrace that mission, Allan said.

Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said the agency’s mission is described differently in the county code. That should be addressed before changing the name, he said.

Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said he planned to vote against the name change because it implies an expanded mission and role of local government.

The board tabled the item in a split vote.

Organizations that benefited from a website redesign included those that help families stricken by poverty; those that provide community recreational opportunities; those that promote diversity, historical preservation and literacy; and dog and cat res-

cues.

Chaaban said her students have worked on about 30 websites since 2008, calling it a “win-win” on several fronts.

Nonprofit organizations have a difficult enough time raising money to stay afloat, Chaaban said, so offering to boost their websites helps them and gives her students valuable work experience.

“I see such beautiful work from my students,” Chaaban said. “They understand they are giving back to the community, and it makes them become a better citizen. They are the best students in the world. Look at what they done.”

Harper said the three worked for about six months on its redesign.

“One of the ladies said, ‘I think we ought to do this.’

And I replied, ‘That is a lot of work, you don’t need to do that,’ ” Harper said. “She decided to do it anyway. I saw her a bit later, and I said, ‘Thank you for not taking no for an answer.’ She said, ‘I’m a mother of five. I refuse to take no for an answer a lot of times.’ ” She was speaking of Burdette, who also runs an athome daycare and preschool.

Burdette said more than actual Web design, having experience working with clients was helpful.

“Most of the work I do is for nonprofits,” Burdette said. “It’s a great feeling knowing that there is a purpose to what you’re doing.”

Mercuri said she already had been designing websites, so she went back to school for it.

“I got the tour from Birnie, and I decided to help them,” Mercuri said of Wayside Cross. “It was a really easy decision to help them with their website.”

Raises OK’d for Kaneland support staff, administrators

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Salary increases of 2.7 percent for support staff and administrators at Kaneland School District 302 won unanimous approval from the district’s board Monday night during its meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

According to figures released by the district, the net impact of the educational staff increase will be $147,114, and the impact of the administrative raises will be $28,387. That does not include the salary of Superintendent Jeff Schuler, whose contract, which runs through June 2016, was amended last year.

The support staff salaries are for those who work in food service, transportation and other areas. The administrative positions include build-

ing principals and assistant principals, assistant superintendents, the athletic director and the director and assistant director of the Fox Valley Career Center.

There was little discussion on the topic. Board member Veronica Bruhl asked why the number was higher than the consumer price index when, in the previous four years, the raise percentage had been below the CPI. Schuler said the raises had been under CPI, and “candidly, it’s a little bit of catching up.”

Also, board members OK’d the first reading of changes to the student handbook, although two members – Tony Valente and Teresa Witt – voted against that. Valente and Witt were concerned about an elementary school policy in which contact information is included in school directories unless families ask to be excluded.

“I can tell you that other districts do it the opposite,” Valente said, adding, “I would recommend that you opt in, rather than opt out.”

Bruhl said she had heard from parents who like having such information for social invitations, such as birthday parties or play dates.

“I actually agree with Tony on this,” Witt said. “The privacy issue has to trump birthday parties.”

Valente and Witt were the only board members who voted against the changes. Witt said she “wouldn’t want to vote no on the whole thing.”

Valente said that while he voted no, “I think the rest of the changes are excellent.”

It is the first step in the process, and changes still could be made before the handbook alterations are finalized.

Tree-trimming project in St. Charles begins today ST. CHARLES – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County asks Great Western Trail users to be aware of a tree-trimming project that might briefly impact the trail in St. Charles.

Skyline Tree Service, under contract by the city of St. Charles, will trim trees along

the Great Western Trail from Dean Street to Peck Road, beginning today.

The Forest Preserve District asks trail users to be mindful of the possibility for construction traffic, machinery, and workers on our around the trails. Signs will be posted along the trail in both directions, leading up to the project area.

While the trail will be kept open for majority of the work, it may become necessary to briefly close an area.

The trimming project is expected to take up to a week, depending on weather.

The seven Aurora police officers who saved the life of a 14-year-old Batavia girl, who nearly drowned after the vehicle in which she was riding crashed into a retention pond at Interstate 88 and Diehl Road last year, were named the co-police officers of the year by the Exchange Club of Aurora on Tuesday.

Special operations investigators Greg Christoffel, Ed Doepel, Nick Gartner, Jeff Hahn, Erik Swastek, Josh Sullivan and officer Chris Coronado responded to the March 9, 2013, crash.

When they arrived, they found the car upside down and almost totally submerged in the mostly frozen

pond, according to a news release issued by the Aurora Police Department. They entered the water, which was neck high in some places, and with assistance from firefighters, pulled the Batavia teenager from the vehicle, the release stated.

The teen, who was underwater for an estimated 25 minutes, required a lengthy hospital stay and physical therapy after the crash.

The crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. when the vehicle, driven by a 20-yearold Aurora woman, left the eastbound I-88 ramp at Diehl Road.

The teen’s mother and a second 14-year-old girl were able to escape the vehicle and suffered minor injuries.

The driver was killed in the crash.

Sabotaging the Common Core THE WASHINGTON POST Tea party opposition to the new education standards in the Common Core is getting a lot of attention. Far more threatening is the less-noticed pushback from teachers’ unions. Even as union leaders profess support for rigorous standards, local and state affiliates are working to weaken, delay or undermine them.

The Chicago Teachers Union, which represents teachers in the country’s third-largest school district, last week approved a resolution opposing the Common Core and vowed to lobby the state school board to eliminate its use. In January, the New York State United Teachers withdrew support for the standards while calling for removal of the state’s education commissioner. In Tennessee, the teachers association was instrumental in getting lawmakers to approve a delay in administering assessments aligned to the standards.

The actions come as the heads of the two national unions, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers and Dennis Van Roekel of the National Education Association, say they support the standards but contend that implementation has been so rushed, so botched, that adjustments, even delay, are in order. No doubt there have been glitches, with some school districts doing a better job than others with the phase-in, but surely that was to be expected.

The Common Core is a set of objectives for student learning – not a mandated curriculum – that arose from governors, state education

officials and others who understood that American children needed to raise their game to compete in the global economy. It is designed to move away from rote learning toward critical thinking and group effort. It assumes that parents will want to measure school and student progress.

In many places, officials are saying that teachers should be evaluated, in part, on how well they are teaching, with good teachers being rewarded.

That’s the source of union objections. The critique about process is a straw man for the main objection – use of test results as a factor in evaluating teacher effectiveness. Union officials object even though what’s being measured is student improvement, not absolute levels, so no teacher would be held responsible for a child’s deficient home situation or background, and even though no one is proposing to count test results for more than half of an overall evaluation.

The Chicago union was honest about its opposition, listing among a litany of objections the use of test scores “to label and close schools, fail students, and evaluate educators.”

The AFT and NEA were among the biggest supporters of the Common Core. They helped make the case for more rigorous standards and invested in the development of aligned curriculum and teaching tools. Surveys show teachers still support the effort.

Will their leaders now be complicit with the tea party in sabotaging the Common Core, or will they help make the standards a success?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Tax dollars well spent To the Editor: In the recent article “Why can FOIA requests cost so much?”

(Kane County Chronicle; April 16, 2014) Geneva City Administrator Mary McKittrick is quoted as saying she has spoken to state legislators and “ ... they will not address the problems of FOIA for fear of being branded by the media of not wanting ‘transparency’ or not supporting an ‘open government.’ ” Later in the article, she states that “ ... as a result, we have a law that is not in keeping with the spirit in which it was originally written and wastes tax dollars.”

The purpose of FOIA is to increase transparency and accountability at all levels of government. The statements of purpose in FOIA are unequivocal and were part of a thoughtful reform implemented in 2010. The statute states that, “Such access is neces-

sary to enable the people to fulfill their duties of discussing public issues fully and freely, making informed political judgments and monitoring government to ensure that it is being conducted in the public interest.” The FOIA addresses costs in several ways. First, public bodies can invoke the unduly burdensome provision for such requests, and the provision requires a public body to work with the requester to narrow the scope of the request so that it is manageable.

Second, FOIA doesn’t necessarily require public bodies to invoke any of its narrow exceptions and withhold or redact records. The Illinois FOIA statute states “ ... that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts and policies of those who represent them as public officials and public employees

consistent with the terms of [the Freedom of Information Act].” The presumption in FOIA favors disclosure: “All records in the custody or possession of a public body are presumed to be open to inspection or copying.” Public bodies can prevent “make work” situations by using the exceptions infrequently and acting in accordance with the clear intent of the law. Furthermore, public bodies should take proactive measures and reduce costs by making records easily accessible by the public.

The cost of doing government business is complying with the laws of the state of Illinois, and that includes FOIA. Tax dollars put to work in engaging the public in government decision-making are tax dollars well spent.

Healing Field event comes to Kaneland for Memorial Day

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Rudy Keller has never served in the armed forces, but he said he is thankful and appreciative of all those who have served and risked their life for their country.

To honor those men and women this Memorial Day, Keller is organizing an event at Kaneland High School that he says won’t be short on patriotism.

“We believe we’ll be the most patriotic community in the Midwest for this Memorial Day weekend,” said Keller, the school’s interim athletic director.

In addition to lining a stretch of Keslinger Road with American flags, Keller – with help from volunteers – will set up a Healing Field on the Kaneland High School campus along Keslinger Road in Maple Park.

The Healing Field will feature 1,000 3-by-5-foot U.S. flags aligned in “perfectly straight” rows that people can purchase for $35, Keller said.

“Then each flag becomes a story in itself,” he said, explaining those who buy a flag can write a message to veterans or military personnel on a tag and attach it to the flag.

The Healing Field opens at 10 a.m. May 23 and will be open to visitors 24 hours a day through May 27, Keller said.

Events are scheduled throughout the weekend, including a daily flag-raising ceremony at 6 a.m. – except on May 23 – and a daily flag lowering ceremony at 8 p.m., Keller said.

The opening ceremony is set for 10 a.m. May 24 and will feature patriotic music and guest speakers, Keller said.

He noted musical performances are planned for 1 p.m. May 24 and May 25.

The May 26 Memorial Day ceremony is set for noon.

Participants include the Maple Park American Legion, Elburn American Legion, Sugar Grove American Legion and the high school marching band, Keller said. A wreath-laying ceremony also is planned, he said.

The event is mostly being financed through individual flag purchases, Keller said, but there are also opportunities for small business and corporate sponsorships – $500 and $1,000, respectively – available to help offset the cost.

Batavia rallies for sweep over Geneva

BATAVIA – Micah Coffey jogged to first base while Reagan McReynolds advanced home Tuesday, two Batavia baseball teammates combining to cover the last 180 feet of the Bulldogs’ comeback trail.

Officially, Coffey’s game-ending walk scored McReynolds to complete a 5-4, eight-inning victory against Geneva and secure an Upstate Eight Conference River Division sweep.

Still, Coffey contends the real catalyst came earlier and less passively: Batavia coach Matt Holm’s message after his team fell behind, 3-0, after one half-inning.

“He just asked us to compete,” Coffey said. “We haven’t had a whole lot of games where we’ve had to fight and scratch and claw for everything that we wanted, so to be able to see our guys compete and fight for a win like that is really important at this stage in the season.”

Batavia (21-3-1, 15-2-1 UEC River) strengthened its grip on the conference lead while Geneva bemoaned 10 walks – three intentional – that added up to thwart its bid to avoid a sweep.

“That’s a game that we need to have,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said.

Moments later, Hahn also played the perspective card on the Vikings (1611, 12-10). Earlier Tuesday, fifth-seeded Geneva learned it would join Tri-Cities brethren Batavia (No. 1), St. Charles East (No. 2) and St. Charles North (No. 3) as top-ranked teams in the upcoming Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional.

“That’s kind of been the way it’s been in the four years we’ve been in the Upstate Eight, is the four of us have kind of been at the top of the sectional,” Hahn said. “It’s got to be one of the better sectionals in the state, you know, top to bottom. We’ll be ready to compete.”

The Vikings might have to do so without Florida State-bound sophomore shortstop Nick Derr, who left the game in the sixth after suffering an injury to the fingers on his right throwing hand.

Derr’s opposite-field triple three batters into the game scored Jason Croci to give the Vikings an early lead.

Holm felt just as strongly about his vantage point on the play after Coffey’s hit off Vikings starter Bret Reed (five innings, three runs allowed), when a relay from left fielder Garrett Davis erased Jeremy Schoessling to end the inning.

Holm argued Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery had blocked the plate before the throw arrived, but the call stood.

Holm eventually was asked to remain in the dugout for the remainder of the game – he did not coach third base after the fifth – but he later likened his motives to “the old Earl

Weaver.”

That is, arguing to inspire his players.

One of the emboldened was junior right-hander Nick Rogalski, who worked around two hit batsmen to earn the victory with three innings of scoreless relief of Evan Acosta.

“You know, the funny thing is, people get on. They do not score on him.

They just don’t,” Holm said. “And knock on wood – there’s a bunch of wood around here – he’s been incredibly effective.”

‘IT’S PERFECT’ Santacaterina pounces quickly on Northern Illinois offer

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com The Santacaterina family room can grow as crowded as the family’s name appears on the back of a jersey if everyone is home together, as was the case during a family heart-toheart Monday night.

The subject was the scholarship offer the Northern Illinois football program extended Geneva junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina last week, and while Daniel’s parents and three sisters all took part, the words and presence of his big brother, Michael, loomed especially large.

A soon-to-be fifth-year senior linebacker in NIU’s program, Michael Santacaterina speaks glowingly about his experience with the Huskies, and Daniel decided joining the Huskies sounded enticing enough that there was no sense waiting. The lengthy family chat Monday night turned into a verbal commitment to NIU coach Rod Carey on Tuesday morning.

“My brother just got home [from the spring semester] and it was just a good time to start evaluating the decision,” Daniel Santacaterina said. “It didn’t take long. I made another call to [former NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish], talked to him, and he really assured me it was a good decision and thought that’s where I should be. It kind of fell into place.”

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound Santacaterina cut off his recruitment in the relatively early stages, but said NIU’s ascent in recent years, the school’s proximity and the chance to build off his brother’s experience overshadowed any curiosity about what other schools might eventually offer scholarships.

“I probably wouldn’t even be as serious about football if it wasn’t for [Michael], just watching him growing up,” Santacaterina said. “It’s perfect that I’m following in his footsteps again at NIU.”

mitted to Northern Illinois but since has shifted his athletic focus to baseball.

In addition to Williams and Michael Santacaterina, Daniel Santacaterina joins other recent Vikings to commit to NIU football such as Pat Schiller and Frank Boenzi as the pipeline between Geneva – coached by former Huskies football player Rob Wicinski – and NIU continues to widen.

at school Tuesday morning with Wicinski basically closed the deliberations.

“He’s also one of the people that are kind of molding me and have a big impact on my life and I just kind of needed to get the OK from him,” Santacaterina said. “I thought it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t. I needed the OK from him and he’s all in, so after that I called [Carey], and that’s how it went down.”

The quarterback position is marquee everywhere but comes with especially high standards these days at NIU, where Harnish and Jordan Lynch have helped the Huskies become a nationally known quantity in recent seasons.

Santacaterina said elevated expectations now that he’s Division I-bound won’t be a concern as he gears up for his senior season at Geneva.

“I don’t think it’ll affect me,” Santacaterina said. “I put enough pressure on myself and I have enough goals, I’m not going to worry about that at all, really.”

Saints make new Christmas plans: St. Charles East boys basketball will move on to DeKalb’s Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament now that East and 15 other schools – including Wheaton Academy – were booted from a downsized Proviso West tournament field.

Proviso West tournament organizers recently decided to trim the field in half from 32 teams to 16.

Although the Proviso West tournament is among the state’s most prestigious, East coach Pat Woods wrote in an email that the change is “fine with me.”

“We are looking forward to the new tournament and seeing some different teams in the DeKalb tourney,” Woods wrote.

Wheaton Academy is still weighing its options for a replacement tournament, according to Warriors coach Pete Froedden.

A former NFL quarterback with St. Charles roots will swing back through town in July for a quarterback and receiver camp.

St. Charles High product Randy Wright, 53, and Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Trickey run QB/receiver camps coast-to-coast, and they’re planning one for July 19 and 20 at St. Charles North High School.

The Wright-Trickey camp previously took place at Wheaton Warrenville South but North football coach Rob Pomazak said Wright approached him last June about arranging a move to St. Charles. Wright, who played collegiately at Wisconsin, was an NFL quarterback for the Packers from 1984 through 88. He started 16 games during the 1986 season.

“I’m hoping that the opportunity of bringing an NFL quarterback back to the area, someone who actually played at St. Charles High School, I think that would be something that would be intriguing to people, and I do know the area is passionate about their football and their development, and they want the best coaches, and I know Randy and Josh Trickey are two of the best in the country at it,” Pomazak said.

Pomazak said the camp is targeted for “the serious athlete.” Separate sessions will take place for youths in grades 4 to 8 and high school players.

The camp will feature oneon-one and small group work, technique and mechanics instruction, videotape evaluation and more.

Pomazak said he’s looking forward to scoping out the camp himself.

St. Charles East coach Len Asquini admits it would be “a miracle to even tie” Upstate Eight Conference River Division leader Batavia.

The Bulldogs entered Tuesday with two conference losses and one tie compared to six River defeats for the Saints.

Then again, considering East would be gearing up for a deep playoff run regardless of its position, a six-game winning streak holds pretty strong currency.

“We’re excited. We’re having a great time playing baseball,” second baseman Alex Abate said. “We’ve got everyone in the game. Even if they’re not in the lineup, they’re excited on the bench. We’re just going to keep that going, keep winning.”

East has clicked behind what righthander Mike Boehmer calls a “pretty deep” pitching staff, a balanced, timely attack and jelling defense.

“We never doubt what type of team we are,” center fielder Brannon Barry said. “And we’ve had some rough patches along the way, but we know what kind of team we are. We’re going to see how it all comes down … at the end of the conference race. It’s always fun.”

“He’s familiar with how we do things with Kaneland,” Aversa said. “We don’t ever move guys up just to move guys up. They either play or they go back down.”

Doctors initially assigned a recovery period of four to six weeks to Laudont’s injury. Monday marked two weeks.

Coffey enjoying hot corner Even amid a position change from first base to third, Batavia senior Micah Coffey still has confidence cornered.

His recent shift fills a need to “lock that corner” down, with Bulldogs coach Matt Holm not wanting to risk other teams potentially exploiting it. The athletic Coffey embraced the challenge of his first full-time duty at third.

“It’s fun to me,” Coffey said. “My first couple years playing varsity I switched around a lot, played a lot of different

positions. The change is welcome. It’s been a lot of fun to be able to transition a little bit, play a couple of different positions, so I’m having fun.”

Jacob Piechota plays first base when he’s not pitching. Matt Musielak started at first in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader at Geneva when Piechota was on the mound.

“It’s been a couple weeks now and we’ve got kids that have stepped up well and played first base, so we’re putting things together,” Coffey said.

Greg Dierks said he thought Radabaugh moved within two home runs of former Vikings standout Jen Monaco’s single-season home run record (eight).

“I’ve always been kind of a power hitter,” Radabaugh said. “I’ve never been one of the really fast ones, so I can’t really hit ground balls and beat it out. I have to kind of just try to hit for power.”

The Vikings aren’t complaining.

“I’d seen her play plenty before she got here and I told her when we had meetings and she made the team that I knew she was a good player but she looked better in tryouts than what I thought she was going to be,” Dierks said. “She definitely earned her way on.

“I didn’t have her bookmarked as any kind of automatic deal, and she had a real

good tryout, and she’s better now than she was in tryouts.

She’s certainly continuing to exceed everything we can ask for there.”

Geneva No. 9 hitter Sarah Baurer blooped a two-out double to left field with two outs in the top of the seventh but Beno induced a flyout to right field from shortstop Anna Geary to end the game as East gained a second narrow win against Geneva within the past week.

“They’re going to be good in the future but it’s not their time right now,” Horan said of the Vikings.

Beno (14-4) yielded five

hits, striking out seven and walking three.

Fanella allowed six hits in throwing a complete game for the Vikings, escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth.

“She got a couple days where she didn’t have to throw, and it was a good bounce-back day for her, and it was needed,” Dierks said.

The Saints learned earlier Tuesday they’ll be the No. 3 seed in the 20-team IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Sectional.

St. Charles North is the sectional’s No. 4 seed while Glenbard North is seeded first and Conant second.

GENEVA – The Geneva boys volleyball team saw how a game can hinge on a few plays Tuesday night.

Much of the drama was in the first game as Geneva beat visiting Upstate Eight Conference River foe St. Charles North in two sets, winning, 29-27, 25-11.

But on a day when most of her teammates scuffled at the plate against Geneva pitcher Rachel Fanella, Peterburs waited back and unloaded, powering the Saints to a 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference River win on Tuesday.

Peterburs clubbed a tworun home run over the left field scoreboard in the bottom of the first and singled and scored in the top of the fourth on Alex Latoria’s double.

“I’m actually really happy with how I performed today just because I rarely ever do that [against a slower pitcher], so I thought that was pretty cool,” Peterburs said.

East coach Kelly Horan said Peterburs looked “dialed in” throughout the afternoon.

Just we’ve got to thank our coaches. They’re the best around.

We owe everything to them. They know exactly how to train us and how to keep us healthy and just be

great role models for us.

Does the depth on this team go without saying?

Yeah, I feel like we could put anybody in the race and just have them contend. We’ve all been training, everybody together.

So there’s nothing, I don’t think anybody could do. And give everything they have.

Does coach [Eric Baron] tweak training much for the state series?

He knows when to start tapering us a bit, but it’s all down to a science they have developed over the years.

You won the county meet at Burlington Central last season and head there for sectionals next week. How is the venue, or is a track a track?

A track’s a track. It just depends on the weather. It’s going to be fast at sectionals, anyways.

How ESPN, Michael Sam broke new ground

By PAUL FARHI The Washington Post The kiss seen ’round the sports world on ESPN took quite a bit of planning and a whole lot of luck.

Like football fans everywhere, ESPN knew that Michael Sam, the first openly gay pro football prospect, was going to be the story of last week’s NFL draft. What it didn’t know was whether Sam would even be drafted, given the attention generated by the self-disclosure of his sexual orientation in February and his fading stock among draft watchers.

Nevertheless, ESPN’s cameras were in place Saturday when St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher called Sam at his agent’s house in San Diego to tell the former University of Missouri defensive lineman that they had selected him in the seventh and last round of the draft.

What the cameras caught next was something remarkable – and certainly rarely seen on Disney-owned ESPN: a tearful Sam receiving congratulations from his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, complete with a kiss between the two men.

Congratulatory kisses are common in sports, although they usually occur between husbands and wives or boyfriends and girlfriends. This one drew alternating waves of shock, anger and gratitude from around the Twittersphere and elsewhere after ESPN aired it, on a tape-delayed basis, at 6:40 p.m. EST Saturday followed quickly by a replay on the NFL Network.

Some, like GLAAD (the organization formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination), said it was “a significant milestone,” according to Ross Murray, its director of news. “It was touching,” Murray said.

But many – including some players – recoiled: “Im not watching @espn until this Michael Sam story dies. It’s gross. I’m not tryna watch 2 dudes kiss on a sports show,” was one of the milder anti-Sam sentiments on Twitter. Miami Dolphins player Don Jones tweeted, “OMG,” though he later deleted it, and another critical comment, and apologized.

The coverage of Sam’s big moment took several months of planning by ESPN, which began preparing to follow Sam’s progress in the draft shortly after he publicly came out in February. “We talked about it in production meetings

We knew we had to figure out a way to attack it.”

Based on its draft projections, ESPN reckoned that Sam would go in the later rounds – if he made it at all. As such, the network decided not to assign a camera crew to him on Thursday or Friday, when teams made their first selections (the network had gained exclusive access to Sam because it is producing a feature on him to go with an award he will receive at the network’s ESPY Awards in July).

In any case, it opted to wait until Saturday – the draft’s final day – to turn its cameras on him, figuring that Sam, disappointed by not being picked early, might be too discouraged to let a crew trail him to the bitter end. The network also agreed that it wouldn’t air any footage if Sam wasn’t picked.

After nearly a full day of waiting, Sam got the call from the Rams a little after 6 p.m. He was the 249th player selected out of 256. His family and friends began to celebrate.

And at that moment, ESPN’s producers in New York lost the live feed from California, where its crew was with Sam. A thunderstorm near network headquarters in Bristol, Conn., knocked out a relay of the California feed from Bristol to Manhattan.

Fortunately, the ESPN crew in Cali-

fornia caught the emotional celebration on tape and fed a recording back to the network’s draft-production truck outside Radio City Music Hall in New York.

ESPN’s producer in California, Maura Mandt, told Markman: “It’s great! It’s emotional!”

Which is exactly what Markman said he saw when he saw the feed. “Honestly, when it was coming in, we have a very young production crew here, everyone in the [production] truck thought, ‘How great is this!’ No one was speaking up saying, ‘We shouldn’t show this.’ The reaction was, this is no different than a heterosexual guy kissing his girlfriend.

It’s emotional, and let’s show it. It was only afterward that we realized we showed a man kissing a man. And we thought, ‘Well, that’s different.’”

Another apparent first: As part of its coverage, the network also featured reaction from a draft party at a gay bar, Gym Sportsbar, in West Hollywood.

After the kiss had aired and the negative Twitter reaction started rolling in, Markman says, the network realized it had touched a nerve.

“It’s a shame,” he says. “Our job is to document the draft. It’s a news event, and we’re covering the news. As producers we don’t make social and political decisions. I’m glad we’re talking about this [the decision to show the kiss] than talking about why we decided to cut out of that shot or not have the shot at all.”

Outsmarting your anger will be good for your health Dear Doctor K: What can I do to calm myself when I’m angry?

Dear Reader: Anger is often called “the fire inside.” It is one of our most powerful and primal human emotions. But in the modern world, anger can get in the way of our work, relationships and social interactions.

In his thoughtful, instructive and award-winning book, “Outsmarting Anger,” my Harvard Medical School colleague, Dr. Joseph Shrand, and Leigh Devine explain how to recognize and manage your anger.

Anger stems from the limbic system, one of the more primitive parts of our brain. By “primitive,” I mean that many animals have a limbic system – even lizards.

Our ability to process and tame anger comes from a more recently evolved section of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. You may have experienced people who don’t seem to have a very highly developed prefrontal cortex – like the current mayor of a large Canadian city.

Or the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield (though that was just part of his act).

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff It’s difficult to control the anger you feel – but you can control whether and how you act on it. “Outsmarting Anger” explains how to recognize, listen to and think about your anger. The key is in this shift from feeling to thinking – turning down the limbic system and turning up the prefrontal cortex. There are no physical dials, but you can learn how to control the imaginary ones.

A simple exercise that can help you begin to control your anger is to construct a personal anger scale. First, write down 10 words that describe escalating intensities of anger. “Irritation,” “frustration” and “rage” are examples of anger words.

Assign each word a number from 1 to 10 (10 being the angriest).

Now, write down some things that trigger your anger.

Give each item a word and number from your anger scale.

For example: • Slow Internet connection (irritation, 1)

• Rude service at a restaurant (frustration, 3) • A driver who cuts you off (rage, 8) This exercise forces you to think about your anger, rather than just feeling it.

Once you’ve classified your level of anger, think your way through it. What needs to change for your anger to downshift from a 5 to a 3? Would it help to talk to someone you trust? To write down your feelings rather than expressing them in the heat of the moment?

Finally, consider regular exercise and meditation. Both can help you feel more relaxed, allowing your prefrontal cortex, or “anger management center,” to operate most effectively.

In the past 20 years, we’ve learned that our anger doesn’t just make us difficult to live with and do stupid and self-defeating things. It also breeds heart disease – particularly sudden death. That’s another good reason to learn how to “outsmart” your anger.

I’ve adjusted well to the school and do not want to consider a transfer.

However, the school has recently issued a warning because of a case of date rape, and this has caused me to be very fearful. I realize that most guys are decent and would never consider this, but there is always the chance that a new date would take advantage of someone they are dating.

Dear University Freshman: Rape is a serious crime whether the attacker is a stranger or the guy who has just taken you to dinner and a movie. It is a matter of rising concern on both high school and college campuses, with many schools addressing the problem.

At Rice University in Houston, for instance, the students launched a program called SOAR – Students Organized Against Rape. This program discusses rape prevention, sets the story straight on common myths about rape and stresses the need for victims to get help.

TEEN Magazine has also printed a story about date rape. Their suggestions for preventing it should prove useful: • Whenever you go out alone with a guy, make sure you tell someone whom you’ll be with and where you’ll be going.

• If a guy invites you to his house, make sure

• If you start to feel uncomfortable around a guy (even if it seems as though you have no concrete reason to feel uneasy) trust your instincts.

• Always stay in control of your senses.

If you use drugs or alcohol, your judgment can become clouded.

• Learn to fend off a potential attacker.

Enroll in a self-defense class or a rape-prevention workshop.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in the seventh grade and my counselor wants me to skip eighth grade and enroll in ninth grade next September. She said that since I am a very bright student I’d be wasting my time in eighth grade. My mom asked me to write to you for your opinion. – Nameless, Miami, Fla. Dear Nameless: I’m not in favor of having a bright student skip a grade. Basically, all that happens is the student graduates from high school and begins college a year sooner than usual. Some students who have skipped a school year find it difficult to adjust socially because of that “lost” year.

When taking a finesse you wish to repeat, often you lead the lowest card that can hold the trick if the finesse is winning.

Then you can immediately repeat it. But that is not always the case. In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads a low diamond. East takes the trick with his 10 and returns a low diamond. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

South might have immediately overcalled four spades, but wondered about a slam. West made a negative double, promising four hearts. East’s double was for takeout; it was a tad aggressive, but the singleton spade improved his hand’s value.

South must hold his losers to one in each side suit. Since West has a club honor, this requires taking two club finesses and leading toward the heart king.

So, declarer seems to need three dummy entries, but he has only two: the spade jack and ace.

However, he can do it if he is thoughtful.

South draws trumps ending in the dummy. Then comes the key play: He must lead the club two and play his jack.

West wins and leads another diamond. Declarer ruffs, crosses to dummy with a spade, and runs the club nine. Still in the dummy, he can then lead a heart up to his king – mission accomplished.

Lions’ literacy program makes a splash Know more

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Joe Kryszak said he wasn’t sure what to expect earlier this month when he saw a guy approach the Elburn Lions Club with “a couple of scruffy-looking boxes.” Kryszak was stationed at the club for a book drive, a collection for the club’s Lions for Literacy program, with people dropping off books all day.

The guy’s boxes might have been scruffy, but Kryszak said a look inside of them told a different story.

“He had gorgeous stuff in there,” Kryszak said, describing “leather-bound classic books.”

Kryszak is the chairman of the Elburn club’s Lions for Literacy program, launched last year during Pam Hall’s term as club president.

Kryszak said the book drive brought in 941 books. He said 410 were in good enough condition for the club to hand out to needy youths in the area.

About another 400 were good enough to give to libraries for their own used book sales. The others, he said, were damaged to the point that they couldn’t be used.

It was the latest of the club’s efforts with the program. Kryszak said people are invited to drop off books any time at the clubhouse, 500 Filmore St., Elburn. Next week, the program gets some recognition from West Aurora

School District 129, when – at 6 p.m. Monday – there will be special recognition for the program at the West Aurora High School library at 1201 W. New York St. in Aurora.

District spokesman Mike Chapin said the Lions for Literacy program will earn recognition, along with the Sugar Grove-based Between Friends Food Pantry, because of a recent donation of bilingual books for the Todd Early Childhood Center in Aurora.

That effort came about when Vince and Gene Kelley

came across thousands of books while walking through a repossessed warehouse that was being cleaned. Brooke Kelley, Vince’s wife, is an Elburn Lion, and, eventually, Kryszak became aware of the books. He credited several Lions, including Hall, Bob Burkholder, Mary Gustafson and Hilda Meyer, who helped with the sorting process, as well as Town and Country Public Library employee Ben Brown and Friends of the Library members Al Guthke and Sharon Kryszak.

The food pantry played a role after Melisa Taylor, a Kane County Board member who runs the pantry, contacted District 129 after a successful coat drive left them with a significant amount of coats left over. Then Taylor said she also learned of the available books, which were a perfect fit for the Todd Early Childhood Center, Principal Laurie Klomhaus said. She said about 2,000 books, “most of them brand-new books,” have been put to good use. She said many in her preschool programs are Spanish-speaking children.

It’s just one example of the program’s success, and Kryszak said Lions for Literacy is looking to expand.

There are schools in the Kaneland area that have giving trees, he said. There are efforts to read to youths whose parents are taking English-asa-second-language classes at the Town and Country library in Elburn. It’s all part of the goal.

“Before the end of the year, we’re going to wind up giving out at least one book a day,” Kryszak said. “That’s pretty good.”
