Kaneland Krier members earn state honors MAPLE PARK – Members of Kaneland High School’s student newspaper scored big in recent state competitions.

Kaneland Krier members were honored in contests run by three organizations – the Illinois Journalism Education Association, the Illinois High School Association and the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association.

Among those taking top honors were Gabrielle Cano, who was named to the IJEA all-state journalism team, and Shannon Gilkey, who took fifth place in the IHSA state headline writing competition.

Kimberly Reese, the Kaneland Krier adviser, said she was proud of the students’ efforts.

“They have had a fantastic year,” she said. “They work incredibly hard.”

In the IJEA and NISPA contests, Reese said participants’ work is submitted

For instance, a competition might require students to take part in a mock news conference, she said.

Reese said she and the students receive support from the school’s administration, which she said was important.

“They think highly of the kids,” Reese said. “They give the kids a lot of independence and a lot of freedom.”

Mike Rice, an assistant principal at Kaneland High School, wrote in an email he was “so proud to be part of a building with such a rich history in student journalism.

Laurie Erdmann built an amazingly strong journalism program, and Kim Reese and her students have built upon that foundation and created something we can remain very proud of.”

“The students in the program are passionate and dedicated, and we are so proud of their success,” Rice wrote.

Kaneland Krier competitors included: For IHSA – Gilkey (fifth place for state headline writing). Sectional winners included Jarod Erlandson (news writing); Emma Wallace (info graphics); Amelia Likeum (yearbook caption writing); Samantha Schrepferman (broadcasting); Gilkey (headline writing); and Michelle McCracken (editorial writing).

For IJEA: Cano (allstate team and first-place for advertisement); Dean Divizio (second place for photography, third place for

review writing); McCracken (honorable mention for editorial writing); Brandon Park (honorable mention for editorial cartoon); Sam Wolf (third place for sports writing); Jack Coyle, Katrina Paulick and Cano (second place for info graphic); third place overall best newspaper; and second place overall best website.

Police: Sugar Grove man forged prescription, faces felony charges

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Sugar Grove man is expected in court Friday on accusations he attempted to fill a forged prescription at a St. Charles pharmacy, records show.

Jackson Stuart Bailey, 20, of the 100 block of Walnut Circle, was charged May 4 with forgery, a Class 3 felony; possession of a prescription form, a Class 4 felony; and attempted acquisition of a controlled substance by forgery,

a Class A misdemeanor.

Police responded about 6:45 p.m. May 4, to Target, 3885 E. Main St., after pharmacy employees noticed the prescription Bailey was Jackson trying to fill Stuart Bailey was forged, according to a St. Charles police report.

An employee knew the prescription was fraudulent

because it contained information in an invalid format, and a call to the doctor’s office confirmed a prescription pad had been stolen, police reported.

The report states the doctor told police the pad was taken in February, and “numerous” prescriptions had been forged in February and March. The doctor reportedly had called Bailey and his parents, asking for the forgery to stop, and there was a lull in activity until recently.

got three calls from a Batavia pharmacy regarding prescriptions filled for Bailey that turned out to be forged and one call from a Sugar Grove pharmacy about a similar attempt.

Bailey’s bond was set at $10,000, and his father posted the necessary $1,000 bail, court records show.

Court records indicate he is being represented by a public defender, has demanded a speedy trial and is expected in court at 9 a.m.

County Board OKs resolution to support reform in Springfield

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After a series of meetings that drew many public comments, few citizens on Tuesday addressed the Kane County Board about its resolution to support reform in Springfield.

And those who did expressed appreciation for the board’s work in creating its own resolution instead of acting on one from Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Scott Roscoe of the Fox Valley Building and Construction Trades Council thanked the board for what the resolution says and for what it doesn’t say, noting labor-related is-

sues.

The board approved the resolution, 21-3. Members Don Ishmael, D-Aurora, Myrna Molina, D-Aurora and Maria Vazquez, D-Montgomery, voted against it.

The resolution indicates county officials seek to emphasize the positive and areas where they can agree, outlines what the county has done to provide a good example and highlights legislation it supports.

Based on comments last week, it seemed like few had

actually read the resolution, board member Mike Kenyon said.

“You know the purpose of it,” he told Roscoe.

Kenyon, R-South Elgin, went on to earn the audience’s applause by saying without organized labor there wouldn’t be paid vacations or sick days. It’s not fair, he said, to blame the state’s problems on organized labor when it was the legislators who created the problem.

“Here we are with huge debt,” he said.

Members Ron Ford, D-Aurora and Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, agreed with Kenyon, and Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, noting it was a bipartisan effort.

“It takes a lot to come up with something like this,” Castro said.

Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said he supported the resolution because, at its core, it states Illinois needs reform, and the county supports reform, but he would have liked the opportunity to vote on the governor’s resolution.

••• In other news, Chairman Chris Lauzen recognized Ford for his service to the board.

Ford, who joined the board in September 2008, is retiring from his post, effective May 22.

Ford said the decision was best for his family and thanked Lauzen for letting him be himself.

County Board honors Maple Park police for fundraising efforts

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta kept his comments brief Tuesday as his department received recognition from the Kane County Board for its Special Olympics fundraising efforts.

“Thank you, thank you,” he said, standing alongside Sgt. Tony Ayala and two Special Olympic athletes.

Noting the athletes’ smiles,

Acosta said, “The reason why we do this every year is right here.”

The Maple Park Police Department has, for the second consecutive year, topped every other state law enforcement agency in raising money for Special Olympics Illinois.

County Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, read a resolution that summarized the department’s achievement.

“The Kane County Board hereby recognizes the Ma-

ple Park Police Department and Chief Michael Acosta for their dedication, commitment, knowledgeable, and unselfish service to the citizens of Kane County and the Special Olympics,” she read.

Brad Sauer, Kane County’s director of emergency communications, initially presented the resolution to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, which Castro chairs, at its April meeting.

chief himself, described Maple Park’s accomplishment as “something special.”

The department has only one full-time employee and six part-timers. Acosta has credited Jim and Colleen MacRunnels for coordinating the fundraising efforts. Blackberry Township offers senior get-together events

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – At 87 years old, Helen Johnson said it is good to mingle and spend time with others for friendly card games or just a little conversation.

But, she said, so many fellow senior citizens just don’t do it.

“I’m sure there are quite a few out there who probably don’t get out of the house, period,” she said.

For such residents in the Blackberry Township area, Johnson points to a growing monthly party for seniors.

Blackberry Township Supervisor Fred Dornback last year launched a monthly social outing starting at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Blackberry Township building, 43W390 Main Street Road, Blackberry Township.

It was one of two senior-related programs started by Dornback. The township also offers a free medical equipment lending program. Dornback, 75, said when he was appointed as the township’s supervisor in spring 2014, he thought about how he could help local residents.

“We had to do more for the people,” he said. “It’s that simple. It’s so easy to just do what you have to. Obviously, money is short, so my objective is to find things that are feasible to do … that won’t impact the taxpayer.”

For the senior get-togethers, Dornback welcomes all who want to attend. He said participants don’t have to be seniors, adding, “I don’t care if they’re 12.” He said he would welcome all from Blackberry Township and the general Kaneland community. He said he gets a few couples and some widows and widowers.

They can play games of any kind or talk with new friends.

One regular visitor, Jim Krage, said he and his wife brought in Rummikub. Krage said the get-togethers are growing in popularity.

Elburn resident Mary Herra said she enjoys going to the events to teach people to play the card game, 500. She said Dornback approached her about attending the get-togethers after Herra’s husband died six months ago. Herra said she enjoys showing peo-

ple a new game, which she said “is to my advantage because I love to play 500. They were learning, and I enjoyed teaching them and watching them.” She said those who attend have a good time.

“Older people enjoy life if you give them something to do,” Herra said.

Johnson said she has been working on puzzles with an-

other woman. She said those at the events will break off in groups at times. She said she never had played Rummikub before, and she enjoyed trying it. She encouraged those who live nearby to give the gatherings a try.

“If people would come once, maybe they would realize it’s just a friendly get-together,” she said, adding, “I

think this is a good idea.”

Dornback, who lives in “suburban Elburn, near Fishermen’s Inn,” said he enjoys being the host, and he wants people to stay active and be involved in their government.

He has enjoyed the medical equipment program, saying he likes to find answers and solve problems.

“If someone wants something, I’ll go and get it,” he said, adding it’s a positive thing for seniors to stay active.

“There’s no reason to slow down,” Dornback said.

Herra said those interested should give the get-togethers a try, saying there would be something there for anybody. While people might feel sad and lonely at times, she said the situation can be improved.

“Life is good,” she said.

“You’ve just got to keep it going.”

Batavia eyeing expansion of wastewater treatment plant

the need to move forward on plans to expand the city’s wastewater treatment facility at 400 S. Shumway Ave. Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the city has been negotiating with the adjacent property owner for acquiring additional off-site property for the expansion. But both parties still remain far apart, he said.

Holm said the city needs to move forward on the project because it is required to have a formal expansion plan in place by August, and all construction must be completed

by August 2018.

“We are in a time crunch,” he told aldermen. “We’ve got to go.”

He recommended the city terminate negotiations for land acquisition and pursue

the original proposal to expand the facility on site. Holm had said a due diligence study indicated there would be a considerable construction cost premium associated with the off-site option.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien repeated Holm’s concerns that the city needs to make a decision in a timely manner.

“We have to act in Au-

gust,” O’Brien said. “We have three years to implement the plan.”

Aldermen went into closed session to further discuss the issue. At press time, aldermen were still in closed session.

Utility companies ComEd and Nicor Gas are joining forces to make customers aware of scam artists posing as utility workers, according to a news release.

The scammers usually target customers through door-to-door visits and phone calls. In the door-to-door scams, the impostors visit customers’ homes to get personal and/or account information and, in some cases, to enter the residence. Variations of the phone scam include stories that the customers’ billing cycle has changed and payment is needed immediately;

Kaneland adds 10 new buses; issue divides board

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board approved buying 10 new buses for the upcoming school year, but board members were split on the subject Monday night during a lengthy board meeting discussion.

Board members faced three options to address Kaneland School District 302’s aging fleet – buy five new buses, buy 10 new buses or lease 30 buses. There was confusion on the issue. At first, the board voted to buy five new buses, but after additional discussion, members rescinded that vote and then, by a 4-3 vote, OK’d buying 10 new buses at a cost of $829,580.

The board has debated this issue at several meetings.

Members spoke of a sense of urgency, as the district’s fleet includes more than a dozen buses older than 10 years old.

Cheryl Krauspe, Peter Lopatin and Gale Pavlak voted against buying 10 new buses.

They were among the members who believed that District 302 should explore the leasing option. Board President Teresa

Witt, Vice President Veronica Bruhl and new member Ryan Kerry favored making the purchase for now and having a deeper discussion about the district’s fund balance at a later date. Pedro Rivas said he felt strongly the buses should be bought.

District officials included information that supported the leasing option. Jim Ogle, the district’s director of transportation, distributed a statement he read. He pointed out the district’s financial advisory committee recommended the leasing option, adding the lease program “would provide the district with newer, safer and more efficient transportation at 50 percent of the annual cost of purchasing buses.”

Krauspe said she was ready to go with the leasing option immediately. She called the buying decision “a stopgap measure that was not necessary.”

Lopatin called the buying option “a Band-Aid.” “That’s why I voted against it,” Lopatin said.

After the initial vote to buy five buses, Kerry wondered whether that would solve any

issues. Witt asked whether he was interested in changing his vote. Kerry said he wanted to do something to take action.

With conversation suggesting the discussion on the fund balance could be months away, he said he thought such discussions wouldn’t have to wait that long.

Ogle asked board members, “why not just go to leasing and face the problem head-on?”

Witt reminded officials the recommendation of district staff was to buy five buses.

“I did not feel there was support for leasing,” Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said.

Maple Park resident Pam Vorhees, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board in the April election, remained at the meeting until the final opportunity for public comment, which came at 11:17 p.m. She spoke in favor of the lease option, saying the purchase won’t solve the district’s issues.

“Will 10 buses help us? Not really,” she said. “Thirty buses would have helped us. If we want to put safe buses on the road for our children, we just went the opposite direction.”

Security increased after threat at Kaneland High

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – An “increased security presence” was in place Tuesday at Kaneland High School after school officials reported a “nondescript graffiti threat” in the building.

The school was open as scheduled Tuesday, and district officials stated in a news release they were looking forward to “a great day at Kaneland High School tomorrow,” indicating classes were expected to continue as usual today.

The school district alerted parents via email Monday night, explaining “during the past several days,” an internal investigation was underway “relating to a potential threat to school security.” On Tuesday morning, Kaneland Principal Jill Maras said the investigation came after graffiti was

found someplace in the building. She said the graffiti did mention the date of May 12.

Maras said the school had a higher number of absences than usual on Tuesday.

Maras would not reveal further details about the incident, other than to say there was additional security at the school, provided by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The email indicated “after a thorough investigation,” which included consultation with the sheriff’s office, the school “will be open and ready for learning.”

By Tuesday afternoon, district officials sent another email that stated, “thanks to the vigilance of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, Kaneland High School staff, students and their families, today was a great day of learning.”

The email stated increased

security would be in place “over the next few days.” The afternoon email noted there would be a police presence at Tuesday night’s sixth-grade choral concert at Kaneland High School.

“School officials have been advised to remain diligent in following the established school safety procedures,” the email stated. “Staff and students are encouraged to report any unusual circumstances.

The district recognizes the importance of the responsibility for ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff.”

Sandra was survived by her children, Robert (Susan) Reichardt, Leonard (Vickie) Reichardt, Cheryl (James) Chidester, Jami Heilmann; and siblings, Donna (William) Jacobs and Anne Seaney. She cherished her 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

She retired from Sealmaster Bearing after 27 years. She then worked for the Batavia Park District’s Teen Center and Kids Club.

Sandra was preceded in death by her mother, Elsie Baker; father, Fredrick Dissell; stepfather, Marshall Warren Munsell; son-in-law, Michael Heilmann; and brother-in-law, Larry Seaney.

Her family is forever grateful for the unconditional love and selfless nature that characterized Sandy’s life. Her positive outlook, regardless of the circumstances, is a strength

Nikrandt said volunteers are extremely important to the mission of a facility like Marklund. Combined, 3,936 people provided 35,477 volunteer hours of service at Marklund’s three locations.

“Without volunteers, we would not be able to provide full-life experiences for our residents with profound disabilities,” Nikrandt said.

He farmed the Long Lane Farm in St. Charles from 1938 to 1971. Following his retirement from the farm, his started his second career at the St. Charles Township Highway Department in 1972 to 1983. Robert loved fishing and hunting at the bus.

He enjoyed being outdoors, and could be found gardening and wood working.

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – When Marklund needed 900 envelopes to be hand-addressed for a big fundraiser, Barbara Rhoads volunteered to do it.

When the Marklund volunteer department at the Mill Creek facility needs clerical help logging in all of the volunteers’ hours, Rhoads does that, too. And she also files for the finance department.

“She is my right hand and my left,” said Cathy Nikrandt, Marklund’s volunteer manager at the agency’s Mill Creek location. “What is it like to work with her? Heaven. She helps four to five days a week.

She’s very dedicated. I can’t say enough about her.”

Rhoads, of St. Charles, volunteered a total of 584 hours last year at Marklund in Blackberry Township near Geneva, earning her the Marklund 2014 Volunteer of the Year award. Rhoads re-

“It reached right in and grabbed me,” Rhoads said.

“At first, I was nervous and did not know if I was doing it right. They were just smiling, and when I left after my first time, I had the biggest smile on my face. I felt I was doing something worthwhile.”

She worked with students and clients in the classroom and the gym, then began helping out the administrators.

“Marklund keeps me out of trouble,” Rhoads said. “I

Equine center’s fundraiser underway for permanent home

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Illinois Equine Humane Center’s capital campaign toward a permanent home is in full swing this year, its president and founder said.

The center, which is currently at 45W050 Beith Road, Maple Park, will have a new home on a 15-acre property a few minutes away, Gail Vacca said.

The center’s future home has a small existing barn and is partially fenced, but the $175,000 capital campaign is needed to build an additional 16-stall barn and extend the existing fencing, Vacca said.

The nonprofit horse rescue organization provides treatment and shelter to horses until they can be adopted.

As of Monday, there were 14 horses being served in the program, including a young female quarter horse that is underweight with a bad case of pneumonia, Vacca said.

“She’s a little fighter, though. Hopefully she’ll make it,” Vacca said.

The center has raised $1,200 on its own since the campaign started in March, Vacca said. An anonymous female donor has pledged to match donations toward the campaign up to a total of $50,000.

“It gives us a [new] goal, and not such a tremendous goal,” Vacca said of the anonymous pledge. “It definitely is going to make things easier,” The next phase of the campaign will involve reaching out to business partners that want to support the campaign. Donations of $100 or

The center also is planning a seven-year anniversary open house with a to-be-determined date in July that will include pony rides and face paintings at the current Beith Road location, Vacca said.

Union Pacific to improve railroad tracks Repairs will be made between Elburn and East Clinton

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Union Pacific Railroad continues to move ahead on its plan to improve its rail line between Elburn and East Clinton.

The railroad is investing nearly $8 million in the line to help train operating efficiency, reduce motorist wait times at crossings and enhance safety, Union Pacific spokesperson Mark Davis said. The project is being funded entirely through Union Pacific’s capital budget, without the use of

taxpayer dollars, Davis said.

The work began April 5 and is set to be done in August. Davis said the improvements will help ensure that trains are running at a constant speed, which will improve safety and reduce motorist wait times at crossings.

That stretch of the line last received improvements in 2009, he said.

Union Pacific has seen a 38 percent decrease in derailments during the past 10 years in part because of track improvements, Davis said.

Union Pacific plans to invest

$119 million this year to improve Illinois’ transportation infrastructure, including nearly $105 million to maintain railroad tracks, $5 million to enhance signal systems and $9 million to maintain or replace various bridges in the state.

BNSF Railway Company previously announced plans to expand rail capacity between Aurora and Sugar Grove to meet increased freight demand. The track will be expanded from a single track to a double track, railroad officials said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – John Walton of Elburn served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the rank of corporal and serving in Tokyo as corporal of the guard, said his granddaughter, Elburn resident Tracy Feece.

Walton, 85, recently went on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to see the National World War II Memorial, Tracy Feece said.

But in addition to all the excitement of being flown out for a day of recognition,

Walton also was surprised to be greeted by his 19-year-old great-grandson, Brady Feece, who is in the Marine reserves, Tracy Feece said. Brady Feece served as his great-grandfather’s escort for the day.

“When the vets get off the flight, they have military people escort them,” Tracy Feece said. “All the vets are in wheelchairs as they come off the flight, and they are escorted [by] Navy people who push them all down this mezzanine in a big, huge parade.”

While the flight was being arranged, Tracy Feece asked if her son could be the one

who greets Walton as a surprise for her grandfather – and officials said yes.

“It’s a very good program,” Tracy Feece said. “I was very impressed with everything.

They set each vet up with a chaperone to photograph them at all the things they visited.”

When Walton saw Brady Feece coming to be his parade escort in full dress uniform, “My heart skipped a beat, and I almost lost it. I had to sit down to regain my composure,” Walton said, communicating through his granddaughter.

An owl family has made its home at Fabyan Forest Preserve near Geneva.

Be wise when visiting baby owls

By ALLY O’DONNELL aodonnell@shawmedia.com Visitors to Fabyan Forest Preserve near Geneva might notice a crowd of people and cameras gathered around a tree on the west side of the park.

Since April, residents from all over the area have come to observe and photograph two great horned owlets that recently hatched at the preserve.

Laurie Metanchuk, director of community affairs and environmental education for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, said owls have been living in Kane County and the forest preserve for years, but these owls have been receiving particular attention.

According to Metanchuk, owls likely began nesting in the tree in January and laid

eggs in February.

Bob Fila, an observer of the owlets, lives about an hour away from Fabyan Forest Preserve but still visits almost every day to view the owls for a project he is working on, he said.

He first discovered there were owls at the preserve five years ago while on the Internet and has been visiting there ever since.

Not all of the recent visitors have been as respectful as they could be of the owlets.

A snow fence was constructed near the nesting area to keep observers at a reasonable distance from the birds.

Accounts were told by Fila and Metanchuk of people stacking picnic tables on top of one another or using a ladder to get better pictures of the owlets. Behavior at the site should be respectful of the owl family, Metanchuk

said.

Observers should be respectful, keep voices down, and should not go beyond the fence, Metanchuk said. “[Visiting the owlets] would be just like the behavior you would expect of people coming to see a newborn baby at your own house,” she said.

Although accounts of disturbances have been made, both Fila and Metanchuk agree that Fabyan Forest Preserve is a good home for the owls.

“If they didn’t like it here, they wouldn’t make the nest here,” Fila said.

Metanchuk is hopeful that the owls will continue to use the forest preserve as a nesting site and a home.

Civil War music concert at STC library

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com In a ceremony last week, the Kane County partners involved in the county health department’s community health assessment received the first-ever Sparkler Award in the category of innovation, according to a Kane County Health Department news release.

The award was accepted

by Karin Podolski, director of community health outreach for Delnor Hospital; Susan Starrett, vice chairman of the Kane County Board’s Public Health Committee; and Dan Eder, assistant director of community health resources

for the Kane County Health Department.

“Because of our strong partnerships with all five hospitals serving Kane County, the INC Board, and numerous other organizations we are able to conduct a robust assessment of the community and determine strategies to improve the health of our residents,” the release said.

“Such an assessment would not have been possible without all their hard work and contributions throughout this process.”

According to the release, the hospitals, health department, and INC Board have overlapping requirements to complete health needs as-

sessments and improvement plans.

Their partnership eliminated the need for each agency to pay for and collect similar data.

Coordinating the assessment and plan development phases results in more closely aligned funding implementation that will address the top health issues facing Kane County residents, the release states.

The event will raise money for a local dog and cat rescue organization.

Schreck, of Sugar Grove, said she and her husband, George, have been hosting a garage sale at their house, at 39 Walnut Circle, to benefit Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets for 10 years now.

HELP is a local charity that provides veterinarian and home foster care for dogs and cats.

“We do it to try and get the community to recognize what

HELP does and to raise funds for the animals,” Schreck said.

“We tie it into the Prestbury subdivision annual garage sale. Everything we get is donated. We do a lot of good.”

The subdivision garage sale is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Schreck said she needs more items to be donated, especially books, kitchen items, lamps, furniture, children’s clothes and toys – but no tires, car parts, electronics, car seats or high chairs or videotapes.

And no TVs, unless they have a flat screen and are in working condition.

“Historically, we do quite well, but donations to the garage sale are down,” Schreck said. “When the downturn happened during the recession, we

got hit, and it has not rebounded.”

Those with items to donate can leave them in the driveway this week or bring them from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Schreck said. Tax letters will be provided in person or left at the garage for donors, Schreck said.

Information about donating or volunteering to help at the sale is available by calling Schreck at 630-253-3640 during the day or at 630-466-7958 after 6 p.m.

Schreck said she also fosters cats for HELP and volunteers at adoption events.

The garage sale also will offer a bake sale, so any additional donations of baked goods are welcome Schreck said.

Promised into the poorhouse THE WASHINGTON POST The Illinois constitution forbids any reduction in promised pension benefits, even a tiny one, no matter how desperate the state’s financial situation may be.

This is according to a ruling Friday by the Illinois Supreme Court, which struck down a 2013 plan, enacted by a Democratic legislature and signed by then-Gov. Pat Quinn that would have trimmed annual guaranteed increases, raised the retirement age for some employees and capped pensions for top earners, for an estimated savings of $160 billion over 30 years.

This plan would not have restored Illinois’ pension plans to fully-funded status until 2044, but it was better than the status quo, under which they are less than 40 percent funded and more than $100 billion in arrears.

The state constitution’s strong pension protection language, on the books since 1970, makes pension commitments as sacred as contracts, the court held. Past legislatures and governors should have either stopped making lavish promises long ago or funded them fully, rather than neglecting annual contributions in favor of other items on their wish lists.

Now Illinois has the opposite problem: less and less money left over for key public services, such as higher education, after it has paid pensioners and other fixed costs such as interest on its bonds. Quinn’s successor, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, has vowed to get control over the pension burden, even if it takes a constitutional amendment.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

He has some good ideas, such as introducing a 401(k)like plan for new state hires.

The odds, alas, are against him, given that it would take years to realize significant savings from reforms and that a constitutional amendment couldn’t go on the ballot for at least a year – assuming Democrats, who still dominate the state legislature, cooperate.

We don’t have any good advice for Rauner, but the lessons are clear enough: No state should ever get into such a financial trap in the first place. Elected officials should make only promises their states can afford to keep. To be sure, Illinois breaks all records for profligacy. But it’s unique only in the degree to which it has followed a recipe for disaster – promise retirees good benefits, then chronically skip annual contributions to the pension fund so as to avoid tax increases or spending cuts – to which other states also have adhered.

The situation in Maryland comes to mind. Though better funded than Illinois’, Maryland’s state pensions are still well short of 80 percent funded, a widely accepted benchmark for the public sector.

A 2011 law that was supposed to ensure a $300 million annual cash supplement for the plans has been repeatedly dishonored. The legislature was prepared to cut the infusion to $75 million until Gov. Larry Hogan belatedly intervened to raise it to $150 million, but lawmakers rebuffed him.

Illinois now faces a future of fiscal and political trench warfare. Maryland still has time to avoid that fate.

we can learn that our Earth is a living, breathing, always-moving home on which we reside and depend. It deserves the same care and attention as our own residences.

The many species of life, many of which share our common ancestry, demonstrate traits and behaviors seen within human species. There is sea life that is transgender. Some male fish become female; some females deposit eggs in males that give birth; and some perform as a male and female at the same time.

Tectonic plates floating our oceanic and continental areas,

creating mountain ranges, new lands, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are certainly worth media instruction so that citizens of our Earth become aware of possible future endangerment to our civilization.

Awareness of “hot spots” existing not only on other areas of our Earth, but also our own nation, can be monitored, and humanity can learn to have a healthy respect for protecting and living cooperatively as one Earth community, rather than a variety of divided populations.

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Both St. Charles North and Batavia expected a strong pitching matchup when Cory Wright and Evan Acosta took the mound.

Neither had lost a game coming into Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division baseball series opener.

The North Stars scored three runs in the first inning and it was all Wright needed as he threw a complete game shutout to beat Batavia, 3-0.

Wright threw 84 pitches over his seven innings to outduel his counterpart, Acosta, who also threw a complete game, striking out 12 batters.

“It was fun,” Wright said.

“He’s a great pitcher, and whenever you can have battles like this, it’s awesome. We knew this was a big series for us and I just got amped up to play this one.”

Wright also went 3 for 3 at the plate, including a single as part of the first-inning rally.

Joyce hit a ball no more than six feet that resulted in an infield single, Wright singled.

John LeGare grounded into a fielder’s choice that Batavia threw away, allowing Joyce to score.

Tyler Mettetal followed with an RBI single to center.

Mettetal advanced to second on another error in the outfield, to third on a ground out by his brother, Zach, and scored on a wild pitch for the North Stars’ three runs.

North (21-4, 15-3 UEC River) only managed two base runners against Acosta after the first inning, and both were Wright.

However, Wright was just as good, getting some help from his defense a few times during the afternoon.

“Cory loves pitching over here,” North coach Todd Genke said. “I don’t know what it is, but he just works fast, gets ahead of guys, and gets bad swings off of good hitters. Our kids love playing defense behind him, and I thought our defense was outstanding today.”

Between Zach Mettetal’s leaping catch of a Joey Gross line drive at shortstop, or Joyce and LeGare running down tough plays in the outfield, Batavia (12-15, 11-8) had trouble getting runners on base against Wright all game long.

Bulldogs coach Matt Holm expected a tight game, but knew a small error in the first inning could have, and did end up being the difference.

“When we put the ball in play today, their guys made some great plays,” Holm said.

“We had a chance to get out of the first inning with a double play ball and we didn’t make the play. That ends up being the difference in this game, and it’s tough because of how well Evan threw the ball today.”

One thing that should not go unnoticed from the game was Acosta’s recovery from a lengthy first inning. The Western Kentucky-bound lefthander, now 4-1 on the year, retired 17 of the 19 batters he faced after the first. He struck out the side three times, as well.

“I didn’t hit my spots as much in the first inning,” Acosta said. “It’s tough to lose that one. Against a team like this, you can’t give up small things like that. Cory is a good pitcher, and we were hoping he made a mistake, but he didn’t.”

When Batavia got a chance to get back in the game in the sixth, speedster Steven Busby was just a little too quick.

Busby rounded second base a little too far on an infield hit by Tyler Kledzik and was caught in a rundown and eventually tagged out.

Wright allowed five base runners during the game, improving to 7-0. The Kansas State commit allowed his first earned run of the season in his last start against Larkin.

As frustrating as it was to have a streak broken, and allow a run, Wright only cares about one thing.

“As long as we win, I don’t care,” Wright said. “It did give me a little motivation to come back out here and get going again. But when we win, I’m happy.”

cer will be something she will certainly miss, she knows this will be a decision she will not regret.

“It’s definitely hard to walk away from something that I’ve built up since the beginning,” Vostal said. “But I know that

her announcement, which truly has put her time with the program in perspective.

“There has been so much support,” Vostal said. “So many people calling and texting me with kind words and thanking me for everything. It has meant so much to me.

“Our team motto all season has been to ‘live in the moment.’ ” Votsal’s North Stars will have one last run with the woman who built North girls soccer from the ground up, now ranking as one of the more feared programs in the state.

Ruth Vostal has been the only coach in the history of the St. Charles North girls soccer program.

On Monday, the North Stars found out, there will be a second after this season.

Vostal told North at a team dinner that she will retire after 15 years in charge, effective at season’s end.

“It’s something I have been considering for a while,” Vostal said. “A lot has happened in 15 years. I have gotten married, had children, taught and advanced to an administrative position, while still maintaining the girls soccer program. It’s been a lot of work and I would love to give 110 percent to my husband and children.”

Vostal has accomplished quite a bit in her time at North, taking her teams to the state tournament three times, with two runner-up finishes and a

Through the accomplishments, the teams and individual players she has coached, Vostal will always remember the people she met and will never forget.

“I think the thing I look back at most is all of the families, players and relationships that I built over my time at North,” Vostal said. “I still keep in touch with some people involved in my first few years here. I have gone to weddings, have had people come to support my children, and I think those are the things I take away most of my time here.”

Vostal knew breaking the news to her team would not be easy and said it was an emotional night with tears and shared memories. It also was emblematic of her time at North.

Busy Saints handle Bulldogs, keep rolling

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East softball catcher Rylee Stout reached base safely in all four of her at-bats Tuesday but only crossed the plate once.

The sophomore’s lone score was decisive, ultimately triggering the run rule in the Saints 12-2, six-inning victory over Batavia in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Before Stout’s sixth-inning at-bat, every time she reached base, she was replaced by courtesy runner Sarah Kriener.

When Stout laced a single to left as the third batter of the sixth, she remained on first base, but only momentarily.

Catherine Crossen followed with a base hit that scored both Stout and Alex Latoria, who was on second. When Stout crossed the plate, the Saints

had the 10-run margin they needed to win the game by the mercy rule.

“It was a lot of fun,” Stout said of her only time on the bases. “I just wanted stay loose and run fast.”

East (22-4, 14-2 UEC River) batters reached Batavia starting pitcher Alena Theis early, scoring four runs in the first two innings The Bulldogs’ shaky defensive aided the Saints.

Stout and Kriener accounted for one of the runs. Kriener again replaced Stout in the fourth inning after the catcher hit another single. Kriener reached third on an infield error and scored on a double steal

attempt.

East starting pitcher Jordan Hall breezed through the first three innings, retiring the Bulldogs on 27 pitches.

Batavia bats came alive in the fourth.The Bulldogs scored their first run when Natalie Offutt scored on Ashley McNamara’s two-out single to right. Christina Karius, who advanced to third on the play, scored another run on a wild pitch during Kaylan Waldron’s at bat.

“Early in the game, I thought we did great defensive things,” East coach Kelly Horan said. “I think there was [a] little lull where they had a couple of duck snorts.”

Hall loaded the bases, giving up a single to Waldron and walking Brieann Cruz.

Castellanos hoped is was the start of a big inning for his squad, which was trailing, 9-2.

“We got down, but our girls

fought back,” Castellanos said.

“We had a chance. We had the bases loaded. A big hit there and we are right back in the game.”

Hall ended the threat and the inning by striking out Tara Zufan.

Horan decided to rest Hall and brought in Delaney Devor for the fifth and sixth innings.

The sophomore right-hander faced only six batters in the two innings.

“We were thinking longterm – it was all about pitch count” said Horan, explaining why she lifted Hall. “We have four games this week and we want to keep her arm is fresh as possible.”

Hall, the winning pitcher, raised her record to 15-3.

“Jordan and Delaney both did really well, hitting all their spots,” Stout said. “Jordan was hitting the outside corner really well.”

‘Instinct’ boosts North to UEC crossover crown

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – In 15 years at the helm of the St. Charles North’s girls soccer program, coach Ruth Vostal has seen her share of 2-0 deficits.

However, after seeing the scoreboard read 2-0 twice during Tuesday night’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover championship against Waubonsie Valley, both in regulation and then penalty kicks, the veteran coach hopes that she’s seen the last of them.

Vostal announced at a team dinner Monday night she’d be retiring after this season, and while there were tears shed for the news, Tuesday was all about business.

The North Stars erased both 2-0 deficits, first by taking it to

overtime, and then by coming back to score a 3-2 victory in PKs. “The message at halftime wasn’t a pleasant message. We weren’t playing well, and we gave up two quick goals, and I told them you can’t spot a great team two straight goals,” Vostal said of a Warriors team that finished third in Class 3A last season.

As has been the case countless times during Vostal’s successful tenure at North, the girls responded.

After Waubonsie scored twice in the game’s first 10 minutes, first in the second minute and then in the ninth with both goals coming from inside the six-yard box, North (16-2-2) tightened up defensively. The North Stars held the lead to 2-0 going into the half, and after

Vostal lit into the squad during the break, they came up huge in the second half.

The North Stars got a goal back in the 49th minute when senior midfielder Lizzie Parrilli scored a goal that pinballed off

both a defender and the goalie from short range.

From there, three big saves over the next 20 minutes from goalkeeper Shelby Stitz kept the deficit at one.

The last of those saves came when Waubonsie Valley (12-33) star Paige Filipek, who had scored her 27th goal of the season in the first half, went on a long run during a set play and seemed to have a sure goal on a header before Stitz contorted her body to make a miraculous save. It was a play that clearly fired up the squad.

“It was just instinct. If I did that 10 times over, I don’t know if I’d necessarily get all 10,” Stitz said. “I knew the ball was coming in from outside right and that it was going to have a spin on it and that it was going to go to my left.”

A little over a minute later, an energized Hannah Durocher unleashed a ball through the middle to Gia Wahlberg, and the freshman took it into the box and stuck it home to tie the score at 2.

After a relatively uneventful overtime, the game went to penalties to decide the conference crown. There, North once again found itself down 2-0 after two rounds, but again, the team rallied back.

The North Stars got three straight goals from Katy Kusswurm, Morgan Rerko and Amanda Czerniak and a savepost-save sequence from Stitz to win the game. “[The clinching save] just feels great,” Stitz said. “I just saw the girls running at me and I had a huge smile on my face.”

Grudzielanek matching wits with son of former manager

Entering the series, Burlington had 11 players age 23 or older on its roster, a reality Tracy believes doesn’t neccessaily help him reach the clubhouse better.

“I don’t think it’s more or less effective,” Tracy said.

“For me, the reason the Angels brought me in is there’s a right way to play the game, and especially for the Angels, the way we want to play the game. They brought me in because they felt like I was a guy that could portray the proper locker room environment and show these guys the right way to play the game.”

Thus far, the Cougars (1418) and Bees (16-16) find themselves in similar spots in the MWL Western Division standings.

The Cougars, who feature eight players 23 or older in a league long known for testing athletes with their first full professional seasons, can’t complain about Grudzielanek’s methods to date.

“He’s doing a great job.

He’s very laid back,” said left fielder Grant Heyman, who with shortstop Fernery Ozuna smacked a two-run home run for the Cougars on Tuesday.

“He was a major leaguer for 15 years or whatever it was, so he knows what he’s doing, and we trust that. So he’s fun to play for.”

While Chad Tracy doesn’t shy from expressing his own affinity for Grudzielanek, he earned another tie to his now-colleague by navigating the minors for nearly a decade.

“When you’ve done that, I feel like you can help them and you’re qualified enough to let them know, ‘Hey, man, I’ve been through it,’ ” Tracy said.

“And you can help them out with different things.”

“I just remember him being a really good player and a really good guy, you know. I’d be milling around the locker room, and he was always great to me and my brothers. It’s really neat to see him back doing this. He loves the game. He told me that. He loves being at this level and helping guys, as do I. It’s cool for me to look across there and see him.”

Tell the Bell Mike Bell, farm director of the parent Arizona Diamondbacks, is in town for the second time this season, accompanied by D’backs special assistant to the general manager Bob Gebhard.

Bell plans to visit Fifth Third Bank Ballpark a handful of other times in 2015, following the well-traveled protocol that has prevailed throughout a baseball life. Bell is the son of Buddy Bell, a former Major Leaguer now serving in the White Sox front office.

“It’s hard being on the road, of course, with your family (considerations), but it’s how I grew up,” Bell said. “I grew up that way. I played, I managed. It’s kind of what I know.

As much as I enjoy being home, sometimes you feel like, ‘Oh, gosh, I should be somewhere else.’ … It’s challenging to be in the right spot at the right time, but I feel like it’s my job to be out and around and available.”

Tony time Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa, now Arizona’s chief baseball executive, is set to speak before a sold-out gathering in the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark super suite today as part of the Cougars’ “Out to the Ballgame II” event.

Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich coordinated the engagement after acting on an easy rapport with La Russa, who called him in September when the Cougars were exploring Midwest League player-development contract options after the Cubs left for South Bend.

“Everybody was kind of, ‘This is our team, this is our family here,’ ” Bell said. “We’re all a part of this, and the more Tony knows, the more he’s out, he gets to see the players or say hello to the affiliate. Where people can pick up the phone and call for each other, it makes for a good atmosphere.”

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek is excited to reunite and talk shop with La Russa, for whom he played with the 2005 St. Louis Cardinals.

“He’s a busy man, and honestly, I haven’t talked with him since the last few days of spring (training),” Grudzielanek said. “Talked a little bit, our meetings about things, and asked him certain things about managing, and other than that, he’s got a lot on his plate. So I don’t get a chance to talk to him too often.”

Legion registration deadline upcoming Friday marks the registration deadline for St. Charles American Legion Post 342’s upcoming summer season.

The 18-man roster, which is open to graduating seniors, includes players from St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Kaneland and Aurora-area high schools. The team plays 30 to 35 games from early June to late July, playing on weeknights and weekends.

A $500 player fee includes all expenses.

North girls soccer 15th anniversary celebration The St. Charles North girls soccer program will commemorate its 15th anniversary Saturday with an inaugural alumni game and barbecue.

Check-in time is 4 p.m., with soccer to follow at 4:30 and a barbecue to close the night.

Cost for the meal is $8 a plate.

Those interested in playing soccer are asked to wear black shorts and a blue T-shirt, but also are should have a white T-shirt, as well. All program alumni and their families are welcome to attend.

RHF seeks volunteers for August event Rich Harvest Farms is seeking volunteers for the Western Golf Association’s 2015 Western Amateur, to be held at the course from Aug. 3 to 8.

The event features 156 top amateur golfers from around the globe.

GENEVA – Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek and Burlington (Iowa) counterpart Chad Tracy rotated their respective right arms 19 times during Tuesday’s Midwest League matinee.

The number of combined runners they waved home in the Bees’ 13-6 victory also is seven more than the number of letters in Grudzielanek’s surname and 182 less than his hit total with the Montreal Expos in 1996.

Tracy still was mastering mental math when he first encountered Grudzielanek, so why stop now? Two decades after idolizing him under the watch of his dad, then-Expos bench coach Jim Tracy, Chad Tracy, 29, now exchanges lineups and strategy with “Grud,” a 15-year Major League veteran.

“I just remember him being a really good player and a really good guy, you know,” Tracy said. “I’d be milling around the locker room, and he was always great to me and my brothers. It’s really neat to see him back doing this. He loves the game. He told me that. He loves being at this level and helping guys, as do I. It’s cool for me to look across there and see him.”

Grudzielanek, 44, and Chad Tracy renewed their clubhouse hijinks when Grudzielanek played under manager Jim Tracy as a Los Angeles Dodgers middle infielder in the early 2000s.

For all the rhetoric romanticizing baseball’s time-honored traditions and quirks, to think Grudzielanek and Chad Tracy would have made their managerial debuts in the same season certainly would have

qualified as a stretch.

“We go back a little ways.

Absolutely,” Grudzielanek said. “He was a young little kid.

It was fun. Yeah, no question. I remember it was him. He had a big family. It was good. Pretty cool to see him there now.”

Grudzielanek and Chad Tracy shared that “cool” sentiment on a day when game time temperature was a brisk 52 degrees. Their path to this week’s fourgame series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, Mark Grudzielanek however, differs considerably.

Not to be confused with the former Major Leaguer who first ascended the Arizona Diamondbacks’ system, Chad Tracy, a first baseman-corner outfielder, played eight minor league seasons with three organizations before competing in the independent Atlantic League in 2014.

Grudzielanek had been out of baseball since spending part of the 2010 season with the Cleveland Indians. He wanted back in, and with baseball’s 2014 winter meetings in his hometown of San Diego, took to marketing himself effectively.

With a bloodline that also includes brothers Brian and Mark, who both played organizational ball, Chad Tracy need not explain his own baseball passion. Connections helped pave the way to a managing opportunity with Burlington’s parent club, the Los Angeles Angels. Now Tracy is the junior member of an exuberant Bees field staff that includes pitching coach Ethan Katz, 31, and hitting coach Ryan Barba, 30.

We were prepared that it was probably going to get rained out, so I was already expecting it. I think I probably ran better because of it. Just had a little more rest time, and the weather was a lot better on Saturday. It wasn’t a perfect situation, but it worked out pretty well.

How early was the wake-up call on Saturday?

The bus left at 7 (a.m.), so I got up at 6:30. So that was nice.

Do you wake up knowing you might have a special day, or does that come along the way?

I don’t know. My coach (Mike Schmidt) had mentioned the importance (of county) and I also take it pretty seriously, but I try to get good rest, eat a good breakfast, that kind of stuff. … As much as I don’t like giving up my Saturdays, it’s a lot nicer having the morning continually dedicated to track. Because on Friday, I had an AP (German) test in the morning, so I was freaking out about that.

And I had to go home and basically run after that. So it was a lot nicer on Saturday. I mean, I was a lot more focused. So that probably helped a lot.

ADVICE ‘Dear Abby’ dinner promises good food, good times Dear Abby: We have enjoyed an international dinner club with three other couples for many years. Besides an international theme, we occasionally have other theme dinners. The host couple chooses the country and is responsible for the main course.

Another couple brings an associated entree, the third couple brings dessert and the fourth couple provides the wine. We rotate responsibilities so we host only once every four months.

We have become close friends over many memorable meals together, sharing pregnancy announcements, child rearing, graduations, weddings and anniversaries.

I think a “Dear Abby” dinner would be fun to host, and I’d love to plan a meal around your cookbooks. Would you please advise how this avid reader might get copies? – Chef Mike In Canada Dear Chef Mike: I know a Dear

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Abby dinner party would be enjoyable, because readers have written to tell me they’ve hosted one, and it made for an interesting and fun evening. The recipes are traditional, easy to read, simple to prepare and delicious.

As I mentioned to a reader from Little Rock who inquired about the booklet, one hostess described decorating her place cards with appliqued hearts and tiny flowers. She created a centerpiece by making a “bouquet” of envelopes addressed to Dear Abby.

Another woman copied questions from past columns, printed them out and made them into a party game, instructing her guests to supply the answers.

She said that after a few glasses of wine, some of the answers they came up with were hilarious, but not suitable for printing in a family newspaper.

My cookbooklet set contains more than 100 tasty recipes ranging from soups to salads, appetizers, main courses and desserts.

My mother used many of these recipes for dinner parties, and so have I. I particularly recommend the Pecan Pie recipe – which has been printed in this column before because it has taken prizes at county fairs.

Potassium-rich diet can help lower blood pressure Dear Doctor K: I have high blood pressure. As I expected, my doctor told me to cut down on sodium.

But he also told me to increase my potassium intake. Why? Dear Reader: Sodium and potassium are two minerals that form salts. Your question reminded me of a patient I look care of long ago, who also had a high blood pressure problem. I asked her to substitute potassium salt for the usual table salt (which contains sodium). I’ll tell you what happened later.

People with diets high in potassium have lower blood pressures than those with potassium-poor diets. Potassium dials down blood pressure, while sodium ratchets it up. That is, provided there’s enough potassium in the diet to have this beneficial effect.

Salt – sodium chloride – is essential for survival. Together with potassium, sodium helps balance fluid levels in our cells. But you only need a small amount of it.

When you take in more sodium than your body needs, your body holds on to water to dilute the sodium. As a result, the amount of fluid in your blood vessels increases. That raises the pressure inside your blood vessels and makes the heart work harder.

Thousands of years ago, when humans roamed the earth gathering and hunting, sodium was scarce. By contrast, potassium was abundant. The so-called Paleolithic diet provided about 16 times more potassium than sodium.

Today, the average American diet contains about twice as much sodium as potassium. That’s in large part the result of the high levels of salt in processed foods.

This sodium-potassium imbalance is thought to be a major contributor to high blood pressure.

Research suggests that reversing the imbalance between the two minerals can help the heart and arteries. In one trial, researchers measured the amounts of sodium and potassium excreted over the course of 24 hours by nearly 3,000 volunteers. (The amount excreted is a good stand-in for the amount consumed.) The higher the ratio of

sodium to potassium, the greater the chance of having a heart attack or stroke, needing bypass surgery or angioplasty, or dying of cardiovascular disease over 10 to 15 years of follow-up.

To reverse the ratio, choose foods with a high proportion of potassium to sodium. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table showing the potassium-to-sodium ratio of many common foods.) Potassium is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. Federal guidelines recommend 4,700 mg of potassium per day for adults.

Now, about the patient I advised to sprinkle potassium salt instead of ordinary (sodium-containing) table salt on her foods: At her next visit, her blood pressure was still high. She swore she was using the potassium salt. I was puzzled. As I was writing a prescription, she reached into her bag and started munching on potato chips. She had been following the letter, but not the spirit, of my advice.

Boyfriend isn’t violent but has a bad temper Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend has a very bad temper and really sounds off when he’s mad. But he is definitely not a violent person. In fact, he is a very gentle, soft-spoken guy most of the time.

He loves animals and wouldn’t even kill a fly.

He knows he has a bad temper and admits it, but it must have been inherited from dear old Dad who has a similar problem.

I’m trying to help him learn to keep his emotions under control, so please give me any tips you can offer. His family lacks money for counseling at the moment.

Not only will this habit head off any potential misunderstandings with other people (simply because he’s heard what they really said, not what he thought they said) but it will release him from himself and his own baggage. You have to set that chip on your shoulder aside to hear what someone else is really saying.

Next, he must learn to say, “I’m sorry.” When in doubt, he should take the blame. This is called humility. It dampens those inner flames very effectively. This doesn’t mean he needs to cave in to people or avoid taking principled stands. But until he calms himself down, he won’t know when his stand is principled and when it’s just a hair-trigger outburst

Damon Runyon, a newspaperman and author who died in 1946, said, “It may be that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong – but that is the way to bet.”

No-trump contracts are races.

Both sides are trying to establish tricks, and the first to succeed usually wins – but only if once those winners can be cashed, the player holding them is either on lead or can take a timely trick.

How is that relevant to this deal? South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade eight.

How should the play go?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade (given the lead), four diamonds and three clubs.

Maybe clubs will break 3-3, but that is unlikely. If the clubs are not 3-3, South will have to knock out the heart ace. But then maybe East will run his spade suit.

What should happen at trick one?

East needs to realize that if West has led a singleton, the defenders have no chance. Also, if West holds two spades, declarer has only one spade stopper. And there is an important principle: If declarer has one trick in the suit you are trying to establish, make him take it as quickly as possible – trick one is not too early.

Here, East should play an encouraging spade nine at trick one. South will win, try the clubs, and either cash out for down one or turn to hearts and lose one heart, one club and five spades for down three.

Note that if East wins the first trick, declarer romps home with an overtrick or two.
