Forum addresses Veterans Affairs reforms Hultgren hosts event in Geneva

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, told veterans Monday that improvements are being made to ensure they get the help they need.

“But we need to do better,” Hultgren told them. “We need to spend more time to listen.”

Hultgren hosted a forum Monday at the Kane County Government Center about ongoing reform efforts within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

President Barack Obama signed a bill last year to overhaul the Veterans Affairs Department after there were revelations veterans were put on wait lists for services, and some died without seeing a doctor.

Suzanne Nunziata, of the Chicago Regional Benefit Office, said her office has worked hard to reduce the number of disability claims pending in the office. As of May 6, 6,092 disability claims were pending, down from 21,925 disability claims in

“We are readying warriors and caring for heroes,” Anderson said.

Hultgren said caring for veterans is a top priority.

“There’s nothing more important we can do than help our veterans,” he said.

Service Academy Day offers teens, parents application process insight

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Like others at St. Charles East High School on Saturday morning, Bob and Christy Koonce of Campton Hills circled the Little Theater to talk with representatives from the nation’s five service academies.

As the daughter of a retired navy commander, Christy Koonce is no stranger to the military. Even so, the 15-yearold St. Charles North sophomore – who is “really interested” in attending the U.S. Naval Academy – said Service Academy Day was helpful.

Hosted by U.S. Reps. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, the event gave students and their families a chance to learn about the academies and what it takes to get accepted to one.

“We’re all looking for the same kid,” Naval Academy representative Bob Falardeau said.

He described ideal applicants as well-rounded “difference makers” with character and leadership.

Ted Bronson of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy agreed about the latter quality.

“Leadership is key here,” he

As congressmen, Hultgren and Roskam can nominate a limited number of students for admission to the academies.

This year, applications are due to their offices by Oct. 30.

Noting the parents sometimes push their children toward service academies, Carol Berger of Hultgren’s office encouraged the teens to apply only if that’s what they want.

“We want those students who really want to go to the academy,” she said.

Falardeau advised the teens to be aggressive and committed when seeking a spot.

“If you don’t believe in yourself, who is supposed to?” he asked. “Go after this with everything you’ve got.”

Matt Lee, a 2011 high school graduate who continued his education at the Naval Academy, acknowledged getting in an academy is tough, but it can lead to an indescribable experience.

He said he encountered teachers willing to help students on weekends, made bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime and had an in-

COVER STORY ‘WE ALL LIVED GARDEN TO TABLE’ Small-scale container gardening helps families grow organic food

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – M. Grace Grzanek grew up in a family that involved food – not just eating it, but also growing it.

Grzanek, 80, of Batavia, recalled planting lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and kohlrabi in Chicago in a Victory Garden both before and after World War II. “All the scraps from the table – except for meats and animal bones – went back into the black dirt, organically fertilizing the soil for next year’s food,” Grzanek wrote. “All the food and fertilizer was organic, though in those days, no one knew such a word. And we all lived garden to table.”

As a former Catholic nun who has been married to a former priest for 40 years, Grzanek takes the multiple meaning of just – as in morally right – from a strong spiritual center. Five years ago, Grzanek started a nonprofit organization, the Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley.

According to its mission statement, Just Foods Initiative is “an interfaith ministry committed to building sustainable and just food systems, restoring quality and equality to our food supply.”

“Everybody eats; eating is a moral issue,” Grzanek said. “I’m trying to change things one person and one group at a time.”

So with a small group of volunteers and an even smaller staff, the group holds seminars and demonstrations to teach people how to grow their own vegetables organically in containers.

Executive Director Christine Stevens of Batavia said the move to promote container gardening helps families with their food needs on several fronts.

“And it helps those families that might have an interest in gardening but don’t have the space to garden. And to help families that don’t have the time to garden because container gardening is self watering and does not require weeding. It’s a good solution for busy families.”

by Grzanek – covers social justice issues, but also it

gives detailed instructions on how to create a container for this type of gardening from an old tub or a used wooden box.

The issue with soil, according to one of Grznek’s newsletters, is nitrogen fertilizers destroy the microor-

ganisms needed to produce healthy food. Its runoff from agriculture and golf courses causes water pollution, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“In the fourth grade, I remember we learned about

something called ‘rotation of crops’ and the natural order of things that would allow nitrogen-fixing bacteria to replenish the soils damaged by crops that had used up the nitrogen,” Grzanek wrote.

What gives family gardeners the best chance of producing good fruits and vegetables at home is in raised beds with soil amendments – such as compost or peat moss – or using containers, according to her journal.

Earth Box makes a particularly useful container for gardening, Stevens said, which is why Just Food promotes it.

People also can get started creating a self-watering container for organic gardening by coming to a demonstration, Grzanek said. The demonstrations are free, but the group seeks freewill offerings to help with expenses.

Just Food volunteers also made presentations to Geneva High School’s culinary arts students.

“They’re trying to educate people about not using so many chemicals in your food,” Geneva High School instructor Kathleen Jankovic said. “And to be good label readers and know what you’re putting in your body.

That is message for my students – if you can’t pronounce it, it’s probably not good for you.”

This is the message of the farm-to-table movement of using locally sourced ingredients, Jankovic said.

“Basically, you need to know where your food comes from,” Jankovic said.

Student service project aids Alzheimer’s patients

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Eight students at Montessori Academy in Batavia participated in a service project in which they sewed 90 therapeutic heating and cooling pillows for Alzheimer’s patients.

The students are in a multiage classroom ranging from fourth through eighth grade, said school head Jocelyn Scotty. Montessori Academy has 75 students in preschool through eighth grade.

The students chose and cut the fabrics, and sewed them on three sides so they can be stuffed with sanitized cherry pits and finished this week while visiting Alzheimer’s patients at a facility in Naperville, Scotty said.

“We told them the patients may want to talk to you while you finish it, so sit and make small talk with them,” Scotty said. “It’s a great learning ex-

By Gina Kraman “If you car’s air conditioner is working, there’s no need for periodic inspections. Some customers do schedule annual cleanings, as the condensers and filters can become clogged, and mice have been known to make nests inside.

But otherwise, if you’re enjoying the cool air, you’re fine,” explains Seith Swanson, manager and mechanic, Geneva Repair Shop in Batavia.

However, repair visits are necessary when the air-conditioner’s airflow is weak, or only blows warm air. Swanson advises drivers to bring their cars in at the first sign of trouble, which may limit more costly repairs if the damage is caught early and contained.

Swanson shares a simple fix to the frequently asked question: What’s that awful smell coming out of my air-conditioner vents? “Mold and mildew can collect in the evaporator case. The easiest solution is to dry it out while driving, by turning off your air conditioner -- but leaving the blower on -- when you’re about one mile

from your destination. This helps dry any water out of the housing, which prevents mold from forming.”

Customers have asked him if it’s okay to run the air conditioner while the windows are open. “Car engines are designed to handle that extra load. The inside cabin temperature may not be as cold as with closed windows, but it won’t hurt the engine. Convertible owners often drive with the top down, yet still run the air-conditioner to stay cool,” Swanson explains.

He says that engines may overheat in “rush-hour stop and go traffic,” when congestion from many cars increases the surrounding air temperature. “Movement, even driving just 10-15 mph helps airflow and prevents overheating. But when you have to stop and crawl for a length of time, turning off the air conditioner may be a good idea.”

Swanson adds, “It’s a fallacy that running the air conditioner decreases gas mileage.

Actually, keeping the windows open uses more gas, as the car become less aerodynamic at speeds above 40.”

Petition calls for installation of Batavia pedestrian crossing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The chairman of the Batavia Bicycle Commission has started a petition imploring Batavia aldermen to move ahead with a project to install a pedestrian crossing with a raised island at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31).

“The intent is to keep it moving,” said John Gamble, chairman of the Batavia Bicycle Commission. “We want Batavia to get it done.”

Gamble said the project will become more important as planned improvements to Houston Street move ahead.

The online petition, posted at www.change.org, states the crossing design was approved by the Batavia Bicycle Commission and the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the project received a

congestion mitigation and air quality grant in 2012 to help pay for it.

The petition requests the Batavia City Council approve the design as originally proposed, or aldermen work as quickly as possible to negotiate with all concerned parties for an acceptable redesign that can be implemented under the current grant.

“A safe crossing at this intersection is imperative, as it is one of the primary pedestrian routes into the downtown, the bike path and across Route 31 (Batavia Avenue),” the petition states.

New accessible sidewalk ramps, signage and a raised concrete median have been proposed for the intersection. In 2012, the city received federal funding for pedestrian crossing improvements to eight intersections along Routes 25 and 31.

OBITUARIES GLEN L. FORD Glen L. Ford, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home on May 9, 2015. He was born February 20, 1933, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the son of Claude and Grace Ford.

Glen was a graduate of Geneva High School and Blackburn College. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and was a member of Kiwanis International and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Most of his professional career was spent in sales with Business Men’s Assurance.

Glen loved most every sport. He was a noted athlete in high school football, basketball, and baseball.

In college he competed in soccer, basketball, and tennis. Later he coached the Fox Valley Lassies and led them to a national tournament in 1977. Glen also enjoyed skiing, golf and “captaining” his pontoon boat. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, contagious smile, and indelible sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia; two daughters, Jody Gilbert (fiancé Jack), Jamie (Danny) Hintz; three grand children, Bailey Gilbert, Isabella Hintz, Jadyn Hintz; nephew, Leroy (Cammie) Ford; niece, Kathy (Don) Ford; sister in law, Mary Ann Ford; grand nieces, nephews, cousins; and devoted pug, Sophie.

having sexual contact with a student from the school was officially fired Monday.

The St. C h a r l e s S c h o o l D i strict 303 board Monday voted, 7-0, to approve Christopher the district’s A. Lee latest personnel report, which included the recommended termination of dean’s

assistant Christopher A. Lee. Lee, 29, faces two counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony, in connection with a St. Charles North student, according to court records.

Lee was in his first year as a dean’s assistant at North and had been an assistant basketball coach for the past five seasons, St. Charles Superintendent Don Schlomann said

on Friday.

A dean’s assistant is a noncertified role to assist the school office and staff, Schlomann said. An assistant’s duties include checking people in and out of the building, monitoring school halls while classes are in session and retrieving students summoned by the office, Schlomann said.

Lee was paid $12.45 an hour plus benefits for his dean’s assistant role, district spokesman Jim Blaney said.

The findings of an internal review on the incident might be shared with the school board as early as June, but that could change since it is early in the process, Schlomann said on Friday.

As of Monday evening, Lee remained in the Kane County Jail on $150,000 bond, according to county records. He must post $15,000 bail to be released while charges are pending.

Lee’s next court date is May 20.

Geneva officials to ponder $9M wastewater upgrade

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city could face a $9 million cost to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant to meet new discharge limits for phosphorus, according to a consultant’s report.

Aldermen did not take action Monday, but will be expected to consider the recommendations at a later date, officials said.

According to a report consultant Dan Bounds of CDM Smith presented at

the Committee of the Whole, the city’s new permit from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency includes lower phosphorus limits of 1.0 mg/L. In his report, Bounds said the permit also requires the city to do a feasibility evaluation for total phosphorus removal down to 0.5 mg/L. Phosphorus is the product of agricultural runoff and wastewater treatment of body waste that federal and state officials want to keep from contaminating bodies of water, officials said.

In this area, the Fox River has been declared an impaired river because of phosphorus runoff, Public Works Director Rich Babica said.

Officials said the city can reduce phosphorus to between 1.5 and 2 mg/L, but once aeration improvements are completed, its phosphorus limit will increase.

“If we provide more aeration, it will release more

phosphorus than is being released right now,” Bounds said.

Bounds’ report recommends upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant in two phases.

First, aeration system and phosphorus removal improvements at a capital cost of $5 million.

The city could seek a state grant for $83,000 to help off-

set that cost, officials said.

The second phase, to be able to meet the expected more stringent phosphorus limits, would be enhanced filtration and chemical improvements to remove phosphorus at a cost of $4 million.

The second phase also would allow the plant to meet the demands of future growth, officials said.

South Elgin resident Lisa Karlov, the executive director of the charity, also has a son at the Batavia school, Connor Karlov, so promoting the service project in Kunce’s honor was a natural fit.

The organization, now in its third year, was founded on the 10th anniversary of Kunce’s death as a way to create something positive out of that loss, Karlov said.

“It’s a ripple effect. A drop in the water makes ripples … of impactful experiences in the community,” Karlov said.

“Instead of raising money or funds, we are trying to raise 22,000 hours of service,” Karlov said. “Our ultimate goal is to help people recognize their value in the community and that you can be a positive change for the people around you.”

BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Three residents in as many days reported burglaries to their homes or vehicles last week in the Mill Creek subdivision just west of Geneva, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The burglaries affected residents on West Burnham Lane, Sulley Drive and East Curtis Square, according to reports filed May 4 through 6.

The West Burnham Lane resident reported May 4 an air compressor and electric power washer with a total value of $279 were taken from his open garage. His neighbors are known to borrow his tools, but he was confident none borrowed or took the items, police reported.

On May 5, a resident of East Curtis Square reportedly checked his garage after his

dog began barking wildly. The resident found the overhead door half open and heard someone running away. He believed someone entered his vehicle in the driveway – which he might have left unlocked unintentionally – and used the garage door opener inside to gain entry, according to the report.

Nothing was reported stolen.

The next day, a resident of Sulley Drive came home about 7:30 p.m. to find the front door, garage door and the interior door to the garage open, police reported, noting there were no signs of forced entry.

It appeared the kitchen cabinets, upstairs bedrooms and master bathroom had been rummaged through, according to the report. Only two prescription pill bottles containing narcotic pain killers were reported missing.

The report indicated that a white man in his 20s who wore a button-up shirt and work pants and had a goatee, was seen standing and staring at the house from the driveway before the residents left.

Maintaining accountability, transparency As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to move beyond successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances.

But that’s not the case with some elected officials and local government lobbyists who represent the more than 7,000 taxpayer-funded units of government in Illinois. Behind-the-scenes efforts are taking place that would reduce their obligation of accountability and transparency to taxpayers, all under the guise of the state’s financial crisis.

One successful compromise and proven solution that is now in its fifth year of operation is the website www.

publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. It’s an example of a proven, successful, public-private partnership that already is saving taxpayers money and should be supported by elected officials at all levels of government.

For more than 200 years, newspapers have been paid to print public notices – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically-important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system.

PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved

Key components of the law called for the creation of a centralized website for public notices that would be managed by Illinois newspapers. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print.

All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website.

With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists –whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars

– repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across 7,000 websites doesn’t make sense.

(Actually, it would be about 4,000 websites as many units of local government do not yet have a website.)

Such legislation was introduced and failed again earlier this session. However, local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be

accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it.

The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers.

Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

A BLESSING IN DISGUISE? Injuries could help both St. Charles East, North down the road

S

T. CHARLES – Learning to play without key players during an injury is part of sports. But being successful during those stretches is a much different obstacle.

St. Charles North and East at times, played without key players.

After Saturday’s 1-all draw that resulted in both teams sharing the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title, both coaches understood the importance of the result, but more importantly, saw how far each team has come.

East (18-1-1, 5-0-1) played Saturday without standout senior forwards Darcy Cunningham (ankle) and Sophie Jendrzejczyk (hamstring), but coach Paul Jennison knew it was not a reason for the Saints to put their heads down.

After suffering its first loss of the season, to Barrington, in the Naperville North invite, the Saints had no time to rest with four games this past week, winning three along with the Saturday’sdraw against the North Stars.

“It’s been pretty brutal on the girls as a group,” Jennison said of the recent schedule.

“We have played some very, very good teams, but the injuries have allowed other girls to step up and fill roles. We can’t complain about missing players for that reason because it’s part of the game and we have had a number of girls step up and contribute.”

One player who has relished in her increasing role for the Saints is Chantel Carranza.

Through 20 games, the freshman forward leads the Saints with 14 goals and has added four assists.

Defender Maggie Smith has also seen an increased role after starting defender Mallory Mollenhauer tore her ACL. With key players missing time, Jennison knows Carranza and Smith, along with other players, have stepped up to give the Saints a scary look

“She has a maturity about her on the field that you cannot teach,” Jennison said of Carranza. “It’s becoming more and more common for younger players to step up and contribute, and I really believe she is just as talented as any player in the state and is only going to get better.”

“I really feel when we get a fully fit roster, or at least get a couple players back, that we have all the talent in the world to have a great postseason.”

North (14-2-2, 6-0-1) was also faced with an injury as senior goalkeeper Shleby Stitz has been dealing a muscle strain in her lower back caused by spina bifida, which caused her to miss some time, more so on a the precautionary side.

hulak stepped in with little varsity experience and made a big difference, including helping the North Stars to win the Tournament of Champions in Iowa, beating one of the best teams in the state in Collinsville in the final.

With Stahulak getting significant playing time in goal, and Stitz returning for Saturday’s contest with East, either keeper that coach Ruth Vostal decides to play will give the North Stars a good chance to come out on top.

“We feel very comfortable with both of our goalkeepers,” Vostal said. “Shelby has a bit more experience, but they are both very strong goalkeepers.

Shelby was able to rest and get her injury all worked out and we didn’t miss a beat. I am completely confident with

either keeper in net for us.”

What both coaches were able to see is the future is bright for both programs, but the focus is on the present team.

Both teams still have matches to play before the postseason begins, but a few wins into postseason for both teams could set up a meeting in the Class 3A IHSA Schaumburg Sectional championship game.

East’s potential challenges to get to that matchup would be Conant or Batavia, who it would meet in the sectional semifinals, with North most likely having to play Geneva and Wheaton North before getting to see the Saints.

If that meeting did occur, no draw would be able to decide the game this time.

BATAVIA – With the Upstate Eight Conference tournament this weekend, the Batavia boys tennis team wanted to make sure not to look too far ahead.

The Bulldogs played Larkin on Monday in their final conference match of the season, winning all but one game to cruise to a 7-0 victory.

Batavia (16-4, 6-1 UEC River) played four matches, with Larkin forfeiting No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles. Senior Adam Maris finished off his conference season unbeaten at No. 1 singles with a decisive, 6-0, 6-0, victory over Larkin’s Armando Villagran.

After raining most of Sunday night and Monday morning, the sun came out before the match, but a brisk wind picked up that allowed Batavia to play a comfortable match under different conditions.

“It was nice to have a match like this on a windy day,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said.

“The wind can change so many things, and you don’t want to play a tight match in these circumstances. It was good for this and a good last conference match for us before this weekend.”

The Bulldogs also had, 6-0, 6-0, victories from Will McClure at No. 3 singles and James Carr and Emerson Hinzy at No. 1 doubles.

Carr and Hinzy, now 3-3 in conference, knew the wind would be a factor but talked about not overlooking any team en route to their straight sets victory.

“It’s something we’ve talked about a lot this season,” Carr said. “We want to make sure we take every match the same and make sure we continue to get positive outcomes. We looked at today as a booster going into the conference tournament and we feel like we did that here.”

“We definitely slowed down serves and returns,” Hinzy said of the wind. “The most important thing for us today was to get a win and we were able to do that.”

“The fact that we have done it before gives the guys some confidence I think,” Nelson said.

“We can’t control any of the matches but our own. The bottom line is that we have to win.

It’s that simple. So I think we are in a good place right now and when we get to this weekend, the guys will be ready to go.”

Josh Boyle also got a win for the Bulldogs at No. 2 singles over David Bermudez, 6-1, 6-0, as the Royals picked up their only game win on the day.

Lucas Ege’s dominance in the area hurdles circuit continued as the Burlington Central senior swept both hurdles races, including establishing a meet record in the 110 high hurdles in a scorching 14.24. Ege felt a little more resistance from St. Charles East’s Sam Decker, who finished second in both the 300 and 110 hurdles races.

Fine pole vaulting was on display, as well. St. Charles North’s Josh Pelock cleared 15 feet for the first time this season to win the meet title. A junior, Pelock narrowly missed his second attempt at 15-4 and is looking forward to sizing up the meet re-

Marmion’s Brady Bobbitt won the 1,600 by a wide margin of eight seconds with a time of 4:19.31. Bobbitt used an unofficial split time of 2:08 in the final 800 meters to pull away from the pack.

Bobbitt, a Batavia resident, finished sixty-four hundreds of a second away from the record set in 2012 by Burlington Central’s Clint Kliem.

For the Bulldogs, 60.5 of their team points came from field events and hurdles, including a big showing from junior Nick Stuttle. Stuttle took second place in the long jump and third place in one of the more competitive 110 fields around, making his teammate, Peyton Piron, happy for him.

GENEVA – Making itself feel quite at home at Saturday’s Kane County boys track and field meet, Batavia came away with its first county championship since 2003.

The Bulldogs were clicking both on the track and in the field events as they built a comfortable 29-point lead over second-place West Aurora at Geneva’s Burgess Field.

Batavia’s title ended a threeyear run for Kaneland, which finished third. The meet was delayed by one day by severe weather.

Highlighting the day was one relay and two individual championships. Sophomore Jay Hunt led off the meet for the Bulldogs with a win in the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch) followed by Peyton Piron’s championship in the

400-meter dash (49.09). In his first open 400 since the indoor season, Piron moved to second place on Batavia’s all-time outdoor 400 list, knocking his coach and father, Dennis Piron, down to third.

“I’m done talking about me because he is way better than I ever was,” Dennis Piron said of his son.

Hunt and Piron both contributed to the Bulldogs’ second-place finish in the 4x100 relay while freshman Reggie Phillips, sophomore Jordan Birkhaug, junior Zachary Majka and senior Jonathan Shubert teamed up to give Batavia a third title in the 4x200 relay.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM What is a mystery clock? How does it work? Magicians never tell the secrets of their trade. But the secret of the mystery clock, first made in the 1860s, has been exposed. The most famous mystery clock had a figure, often a goddess, who held a long pendulum that swung for no obvious reason. She stood on a circular base with a platform.

The platform moved slightly, making the pendulum swing and the clock hands move to tell the time. A different type of mystery clock was made in the 20th century. It was very popular from the 1950s to the 1980s. A normal-looking circular face that was secretly made of four glass discs was set in a modern looking case, usually rectangular. The hands were glued to the discs. The numbers for the hours were on a band on the case that went around the glass, so the hands seem to float on the glass while keeping the time. Many of these clocks were made with gold and jewels and sold for high prices. Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, is featured in a mystery clock that sold late in November 2014 for $5,843. She is holding a ball-shaped black clock suspended on chains from her left hand. The round black clock has raised Roman numerals, and it furnishes the necessary rotation. *** Q: I have an old 20-inch toy Army truck by Buddy L. It was given to my brother in 1940. The truck has a green metal body, a canvas cover and rubber wheels. The side door is embossed with “Buddy L.” The truck is in good condition. What is it worth?

A: Your Army transport truck with the Buddy “L” bar and circle logo em-

bossed on the door was made from 1939 to 1940. The truck was sold alone or with a trailer. It’s worth $90 to $175, depending on its condition. The Buddy “L” company goes back to the Moline Pressed Steel Co. that was started by Fred A. Lundahl in 1913 in Moline, Illinois. His son, Arthur Brown Lundahl, was born in 1915 and nicknamed Buddy.

Another boy named Buddy lived in their neighborhood, and to avoid confusion, Buddy Lundahl was called Buddy “L.” His father’s company began making toys under the name, Buddy “L” in 1921.

Buddy “L” toys still are being made. *** Q: I have a delicate blue and gold cup and saucer with flowers that is marked “Dresden, Saxony” along with an animal that looks like a calf. I’d love it if you could give me some information about it.

A: The mark on your cup and saucer was used by Ambrosius Lamm, a decorator who opened a studio in Dresden, Germany, in 1887. He decorated porcelain made by the famous manufacturers in the nearby town of Meissen. His mark shows a lamb over the word “Dresden.”

The word “Saxony” was added in 1915 and used until about 1934, when the mark was changed to say “Made in Saxony.” That is when your cup and saucer were made. When Lamm retired in 1934, his daughter took over the business and continued to operate it until 1949. The fancy blue and gold decoration on your cup and saucer suggests the set is worth $100 to $150. *** Q: I have six luncheon plates and six cups and saucers marked on the bottom “Designed for Pan Am” above an oval mark for “Bauscher Weiden, Bavaria, Germany.” They are solid white with a gold border and are surprisingly sturdy.

A: Pan American Airlines was in business from 1927 until 1991. Early Pan Am planes had “dining rooms,” where passengers dined at tables set with china plates, silverware, and real glass-

ware, not plastic. Dinnerware was made especially for Pan Am by several different manufacturers from the 1930s to the 1980s. Airline china, like railroad china, and other restaurant ware, is heavier, making it less likely to break with constant use. Your dishes are the “Gold Rim” pattern originally made by Noritake in Japan in the early 1970s. Later, the same pattern was made by Bauscher Weiden. Another white pattern, with a wavy border design, was made for Pan Am by Bauscher Weiden beginning in 1986. There are collectors who search for vintage airline and railroad china. Six place sets like yours might auction for $150 to $250 depending on where and when it is sold. It will sell best at an auction with other airplane collectibles. *** Q: I have a 10- by 5-foot snooker table. I believe the small size indicates this table is an American style rather than English, which would most likely be 12 feet by 6 feet. The brass badge on the table said “Ehrlich, St. Joseph, Mo., Dan Patrick cushions.” Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.

A: The brass badge probably reads “Dan Patch cushions,” not “Dan Patrick.” H. Ehrlich & Sons Mfg. Co. was listed as a maker of billiard and pool ta-

ble cushions in 1912. The standard size for tournament snooker tables of 11 feet 8 1/2 inches by 5 feet 10 inches, plus or minus half an inch, is usually called a 12 by 6 foot table. Smaller tables like yours were made for use in homes, pubs, and other places. The Dan Patch cushions were named after the horse that set a world’s record for the fastest mile in harness racing in 1906. When the horse retired in 1909, he held nine world records and was undefeated. *** Tip: If your dark furniture has a scratch, you can make it less obvious by rubbing half a shelled walnut on it. Simple strategies can reduce older patients’ delirium Dear Doctor K: My elderly mother has a number of health conditions. Over the past year, she has ended up in the hospital four times. The last two times, she became delirious. Is there anything we can do to prevent delirium if she has to have another hospital stay?

Dear Reader: Unfortunately, delirium is common among older patients in hospitals, particularly after surgery or during a stay in an intensive care unit (ICU). Onethird to two-thirds of elderly hospital patients develop delirium.

Delirium usually comes on suddenly. People with delirium often have a change in their level of consciousness, which can go in two directions. Most often, they are lethargic and don’t respond to things around them. Less often, it’s the opposite: They are agitated, emotional (crying, angry), and very sensitive to light, noise or any change in the environment.

People with delirium also are confused. They may see or hear things that aren’t there, and may not even realize they are in the hospital.

Delirium can increase the time it takes to recover. It can increase the risk of falls, which can lead to serious injury. It also makes exist-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff ing dementia worse. Some studies find that people with delirium in the hospital, particularly when it is more severe, are more likely to require nursing home placement, and more likely to die.

A new study analyzed the combined results of 14 earlier studies that looked at non-drug strategies to prevent delirium in older hospital patients. They found that simple methods can reduce delirium by 50 percent and the risk of falls by 60 percent.

Some important things that hospital staff can do include: • Getting patients out of bed and walking as soon as possible; • Trying to avoid waking patients at night (to give medications or check vital signs, for example); • Making sure patients drink enough water.

Family members and friends can also help to prevent delirium by: • Bringing glasses, hearing aids and dentures to the hospital. Older people do better if they can see, hear and eat.

• Bringing in a few familiar objects from home. Family photos, a favorite comforter or blanket, rosary beads or a beloved book can be comforting.

• Keeping easy-to-read clocks and calendars visible. One reason people get disoriented in the hospital is that they can’t go by normal cues, such as daylight.

• Talking about personal and current events.

• Reminding your loved one that they are in the hospital and why they are there. In simple terms, explain what is being done to help them feel better.

• Spending as much time as possible with friends or family members who are in the hospital.

The environment of a hospital will be unfamiliar and frightening, so contact with familiar people anchors an older hospitalized person to reality.

Family members are often the first to notice subtle changes. If you detect any signs that could indicate delirium, discuss them with the hospital staff right away.

Dr. Wallace: My grandmother lives alone about five miles from our house. At school, two members of National Fire Protection talked to our class about the importance of having a smoke detector near every bedroom. We had one detector, and I asked my dad to put up two more, by my bedroom and my brother’s bedroom. I also had him install one by our grandmother’s bedroom because she didn’t have one in her house.

Two weeks ago, a fire broke out in our grandmother’s house. The smoke alarm sounded and she got out of the house safely and even saved her dog, Mitzi, who is blind.

I want to remind all the teens who read your column to make sure they have a smoke detector that works located near every bedroom in the house. We had wanted to go through school together, so should I wait for her so we can both start college in the second semester, or do you think it would be better for me to start school this September? In the bidding, South had a close decision over one heart: double or one no-trump? The hand distribution suggests double, but one no-trump has the advantage of immediately defining hand type and strength: balanced with heart stoppers and 15-plus to 18-minus points.

Note West’s lead, the heart three, not the eight. When you attack in partner’s unsupported suit, lead high from a doubleton, low from a tripleton.

South starts with only five top tricks: two spades, two hearts and one club. At first glance, it looks easy to establish four diamond tricks and cruise home.

But note that if South leads the diamond queen from his hand at trick two, he goes down because of the bad break.

Since East is marked with all of the missing high cards, declarer should play a spade to dummy’s king, then lead a low diamond from the dummy.

Here, East has to win with his ace, and South has 10 tricks: three spades, two hearts, four diamonds and one club. But if East could play a low diamond, after winning with his queen, declarer would then run the club jack, to take three spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs.
