LEADERS Students, families learn what it takes to get accepted to a service academy

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Like others at St. Charles East High School on Saturday morning, Bob and Christy Koonce of Campton Hills circled the Little Theater to talk with representatives from the nation’s five service academies.

As the daughter of a retired navy commander, Christy Koonce is no stranger to the military. Even so, the 15-year-old St. Charles Rep. Randy North sophomore – Hultgren who is “really interested” in attending the U.S. Naval Academy – said Service Academy Day was

helpful.

Hosted by U.S. Reps. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, the event gave students and their families a chance to learn about the academies and what it takes to get accepted to one.

“We’re all looking for the same kid,” Naval Academy representative Bob Falardeau said.

He said ideal applicants are well-rounded “difference makers” with character and Rep. Peter leadership.

Roskam Ted Bronson of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy agreed about the latter quality.

“Leadership is key here,” he said.

“We produce leaders.”

As congressmen, Hultgren and Roskam can nominate a limited number of students for admission to the academies. This year, applications are due to their offices by Oct. 30.

Noting that parents sometimes push their children toward service academies, Carol Berger of Hultgren’s office encouraged the teens to apply only if that’s what they want.

“We want those students who really want to go to the academy,” she said.

Falardeau advised the teens to be aggressive and committed when seeking a spot.

“If you don’t believe in yourself, who is supposed to?” he asked. “Go after this with everything you’ve got.”

Matt Lee, a 2011 high school graduate who enrolled at the Naval Academy, acknowledged that getting in an academy is tough, but it can lead to an indescribable experience.

He said he encountered teachers willing to help students on weekends, made bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime and had an incredible support network.

“They will not let you fail,” he said.

Students’ project aims to soothe Alzheimer’s patients in Naperville facility BATAVIA – Eight students at Montessori Academy in Bavavia participated in a service project in which they sewed 90 therapeutic heating and cooling pillows for Alzheimer’s patients.

The students are in a multiage classroom covering fourth through eighth grade, school head Jocelyn Scotty said.

Montessori Academy has 75 students from preschool through eighth grade.

They chose and cut the fabrics and sewed them on three sides so they can be stuffed with sanitized cherry pits and finished this week while visiting Alzheimer’s patients at a facility in Naperville, Scotty said.

“We told them the patients may want to talk to you while you finish it, so sit and make small talk with them,” Scotty said. “It’s a great learning experience for them.”

Sugar Grove resident Amanda Minarik has a daughter, Kennedy O’Brien, who is a seventh-grader at the school.

Minarik said she was given a cherry pit therapeutic pillow about 10 years ago as a gift.

“My mother bought it at a

craft show,” Minarik said. “I made one for Kennedy’s teacher, Bre Cullen, for Christmas.”

So when the children were deciding what to do for their service project, making these therapeutic pillows seemed like a good idea, Scotty said.

“They decided on something that soothes aching muscles, because as you get older, that appeals to everyone,” Scotty said. “They came up with that.”

The therapeutic pillows can be heated in a microwave or frozen in a freezer and used to soothe aching joints, she said.

Sanitized cherry pits are perfect for the pillows because they heat up without exploding and the pillows can wrap around a knee or shoulder, Scotty said.

“When they went to pick the fabrics, they chose patterns that men and women would both like,” Scotty said.

Minarik volunteered to help with the project, where each child cut fabric, measured a pound of cherry pits for each pillow and used a sewing machine.

The pillows are easy to clean, Minarik said.

“You can wash them in the washer or the dishwasher –

top rack,” Minarik said.

The $250 project was underwritten by BeCause of Beth, a charity named for Beth Kunce, a 22-year-old Bartlett woman who died suddenly in 2003.

South Elgin resident Lisa Karlov, the executive director of the charity, also has a son at the Batavia school, Connor Karlov, so promoting the service project in Kunce’s honor was a natural fit.

“I went to high school with her, and we were friends in high school and college,” Karlov said. “She ran upstairs to answer the phone and … died of cardiac arrest.”

The organization, now in its third year, was founded on the 10th anniversary of Kunce’s death as a way to create something positive out of that loss, Karlov said.

“It’s a ripple effect. A drop in the water makes ripples … of impactful experiences in the community,” Karlov said.

“Instead of raising money or funds, we are trying to raise 22,000 hours of service,” Karlov said. “Our ultimate goal is to help people recognize their value in the community and that you can be a positive change for the people around you.”

North, East play to draw to share River title Rivals finish Upstate Eight River at 6-0-1

CHARLES – Settling for a tie in any sport is never easy, especially when the game decides the conference championship, which was the case as St. Charles North and East squared off for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title Saturday afternoon at East’s Norris Stadium.

Each team scored on a penalty kick, North in the first half and East in the second, which summarized just how tight the game was played. As the final buzzer sounded, the score remained 1-1, and, with UEC rules, ended that way.

With the result, both East (18-1, 6-0-1 UEC River) and North (15-2-2, 6-0-1) will finish the season as Co-Champions of the River Division.

As tough as it was to end without a clear winner, both teams feel that positives can be taken away, and, at the end of the day, can call themselves conference champions.

“We knew it was going to be a hard fought game,” North Stars coach Ruth Vostal said.

“There are definitely some things we did well. We looked great defensively. But it says a lot when there’s two great teams with a lot of playmakers on each side and the game ends with two [penalty kicks].”

“I think a draw was a fair result,” East coach Paul Jennison said. “They were the better team in the first half and I thought we were better in the second. Both coaches won’t be ecstatic, but we both understand the importance of walking out of here without losing that game.”

North got on the board when an attempted cross was whistled as a hand ball in the box, allowing Hanna Durocher to step up to the penalty spot. The senior forward’s

Durocher came into Saturday’s rivalry game with a lot of experience and knows her team can take positives away from the draw.

“We knew that East was going to come at us hard,” Durocher said. “We love those kinds of games, but we were able to get better today and learn from the outcome. As a competitor, a draw is tough, but we have a lot to take away and I know we will put in the work where we need to be ready for the postseason.”

North took the one-goal advantage into halftime.

Jennison didn’t feel he

needed to change too much, as his team started carrying momentum into the break.

One thing he did notice got stronger as the game went on was the Saints’ ability to find freshman playmaker Chantel Carranza.

Playing without seniors Darcy Cunningham (ankle), Sophie Jendrzejczyk (hamstring) and Mallory Mollenhauer (knee), Carranza’s role has continued to increase as the season has gone on.

With East continuing to try and breakthrough and tie the game in the second half, Carranza beat a North defender and was tripped up in the box with 17:54 on the clock.

For the fifth time this season, the freshman forward calmly put the ball into the

back of the net to level the score. “[Chantel] has been excellent for us,” Jennison said. “I make no excuses for us missing some big time players because it leaves spots for other players to step in and make an impact. Age is just a number when it comes to athletics and she kept knocking at the door and finally got the opportunity to put one away.”

East also feels it should not be disappointed with the outcome of the game.

“I think we can move forward in a positive direction from this one,” East midfielder Kelli Santo Paulo said.

“You always want to keep going and play overtime, but it’s alright. We worked hard together and came back after

being behind.”

The North Stars had a couple of strong chances near the end of the match, as both Gia Wahlberg and Morgan Rerko’s shots were both stopped

by Chesterfield.

North senior goalkeeper Shelby Stitz had eight saves as she battled through an ingame injury to punch away a few East crosses late to preserve the draw.

Because both teams were even with conference record, and goal differential remained at plus-30 for both sides, a coin flip decided who would represent to River Division in the unofficial UEC championship game North won the toss and will play Waubonsie Valley, tentatively, on Wednesday.

A junior, Pelock narrowly missed his second attempt at 15-4 and is looking forward to sizing up the meet record of 16-0 next year.

“A lot of credit goes to my coach [North pole vault coach Samuel Breban]. My coach is my main motivator,” Pelock said.

If he were to qualify for state, Pelock would be Breban’s sixth vaulter in the past seven years to make it.

Brady Bobbitt of Marmion won the 1,600 run by a wide margin of eight seconds with a time of 4:19.31.

Bobbitt used an unofficial split time of 2:08 in the final 800 meters to pull away from the pack.

Bobbitt finished .64 seconds away from the record set in 2012 by Clint Kliem of Burlington Central.

For the Bulldogs, 60.5 of their team points came from field events and hurdles, including a big showing from junior Nick Stuttle.

Stuttle took second place in the long jump and third place in one of the more competitive 110 fields around, making his teammate, Peyton Piron, very happy for him.

“The coaches told Nick just do your hurdles and the long jump, don’t worry about the 4x1 and it worked,” Peyton Piron said.

Piron added: “The team bailed me out for the 200 [he finished second]. We were up by so much, it didn’t really matter. We are doing a great job. I’m so excited right now.”

Piron and his Bulldogs teammates enjoyed the victory before scrambling to attend Batavia’s prom, held later Saturday night.

GENEVA – Making itself feel quite at home at Saturday’s Kane County boys track and field meet, Batavia came away with its first county championship since 2003.

The Bulldogs were clicking both on the track and in the field events as they built a comfortable 29-point lead over second place West Aurora at Geneva’s Burgess Field.

Batavia’s title ended a three-year run for Kaneland, which finished third.

Highlighting the day was one relay and two individual championships.

Sophomore Jay Hunt led off the meet for the Bulldogs with a win in the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch) followed by Peyton Piron’s individual championship in the 400-meter dash (49.09).

In his first open 400 since the indoor season, Piron moved to second place on Batavia’s all-time outdoor 400 list, knocking his coach and father, Dennis Piron, down to third.

“I’m done talking about me because he is way better than I ever was,” Dennis Piron said of his son.

Hunt and Piron both contributed to the Bulldogs’ second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay while freshman Reggie Phillips, sophomore Jordan Birkhaug, junior Zachary Majka and senior Jonathan Shubert teamed up to give Batavia a third title in the 4x200 meter relay.

From the freshman to seniors, Dennis Piron was pleased with how his team performed up and down the lineup, saying, “To have the depth that we do, the kids that we have, the coaches that we have, the complete program that we have, and all of those kids doing all different things is just wonderful.”

In addition, he said: “In a meet that’s, like, 100 years old, to say that you won it is a pretty special thing to be able to say.”

In this day of sonograms and gender-reveal parties, you are in the minority with your preference to be kept in the dark.

Rather than being rude, what probably happened was a person who was unaware of your preference sent your invitation as part of a batch – and pink is the theme of the party.

Dear Abby: My longtime 91-year-old friend is healthy but suffers from dementia. Her frequent fearful thoughts are centered around (imaginary) intruders who lurk somewhere upstairs or in the garage and are robbing her.

I try to tell her this is only in her mind, that they are not real, to no avail.

What else can I say or do?

Her son comes three times a week to clean her house and cook good meals for her, but he doesn’t live there. – Concerned Friend Out West

Dear Concerned Friend: Talk to her son and find out whether he knows what she has been telling you. If he has removed anything from his mother’s house, he should remind her.

If he hasn’t – and nothing is missing – then his mother’s doctor should be made aware that she is anxious and fearful and may be having hallucinations, because there may be a medication that can calm her.

If, after your number has been in the National Registry for three months, you continue to receive calls, you can file a formal complaint using the same toll-free number.

This will stop most – but not all – telemarketing calls. Unfortunately, calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors and some organizations with which you already have a relationship are still permitted.

Dear Abby: My daughter is having a baby. Her baby shower is being given by one of her close friends.

I made it clear that I did not want to know the gender of the baby before the birth, that I’m content to enjoy the suspense. I did not attend the “reveal” party that was held several months ago.

When my shower invitation arrived, it was pink and began with “It’s A Girl!” Isn’t it rude to ignore another person’s feelings even if you think they are silly?

Some bridge players follow their inner voices. But most should analyze each deal, considering the alternatives. Here, South is in four spades. West leads a trump. (What do you think of that choice?) How should South plan the play?

After South opened with a weak two-bid, North responded two no-trump, which asked South to define his hand. With a maximum, South rebid three diamonds, showing his “feature,” which is typically the ace or king of that suit.

Many players would draw trumps and run the heart jack, but should fail. East wins with his king and shifts to the diamond queen. The defenders take two tricks in that suit, then sit back and wait for a club winner.

Instead, declarer should draw trumps ending on the board and lead a low heart toward his jack.

If West could take that trick with the heart king, he would do best to shift to clubs. However, South would win with dummy’s ace and cash the heart ace-queen, discarding the diamond four from his hand. Declarer would lose only one trick in each side suit.

Here, if East wins with his heart king, South gets six spades, three hearts and one club. If East ducks, South loses only two diamonds and one club.

Finally, West made a poor choice of opening lead. He should have selected the club three.

Don’t be afraid to lead from a king, especially around to a weak hand.
