Paddlewheel Riverboats opening weekend set

Fermilab’s bison herd gets new addition Calf born on Saturday in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory’s newest addition to its bison herd was staying close to its mother Wednesday afternoon.

The bison calf was born Saturday morning, but Cleo Garcia, senior groundskeeper at Fermilab, hopes it won’t be the last one born this spring.

“I’m hoping in the next two weeks for four or five more,” said Garcia, who helps take care of the bison. The size of the herd currently is 25, he said.

Although Fermilab is known best for its high energy physics research, the laboratory also maintains a herd of bison. The bison are a popular attraction this time of year because of new calves being born.

Garcia has been working with the bison for five years.

“I like being around animals,” he said.

Robert Wilson, Fermilab’s first director, brought the first bison – a bull and four cows – to Fermilab in 1969. According to Fermilab officials, Wilson wanted to recognize and strengthen Fermilab’s

connection to the area’s prairie heritage. Today’s bison are descendants of those animals.

Bison are the heaviest land mammals in North America. Adult males stand as tall as 6 feet at the shoulders and weigh between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds, according to The Nature Conservancy’s website, www.nature.org.

The animals have become a hit with Fermilab campus visitors, who can watch them roam on 80 acres of land.

Buffalo is the popular name often used to describe North American bison, but buffalo are distinctly different animals from bison. Although both bison and buffalo belong to the same family, Bovidae, true “buffalo,” are native only to Africa and Asia, according to the website www.allaboutwildlife.com.

Visitors are encouraged to see the bison. They can enter the Fermilab site through its Pine Street entrance in Batavia or the Batavia Road entrance in Warrenville. Admission is free, but attendees will need a valid photo ID to enter the site. Summer hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

‘IT’S A NEW TIME’ Museum, formerly St. Charles Heritage Center, has new programs, exhibit ahead

T. CHARLES – The St. Charles History Museum today took a step toward its future while still preserving its past.

The museum at 215 E. Main St., St. Charles, unveiled a new logo, website and membership benefits overnight. The logo gives the museum a modern look but also pays homage to the front of the museum building, which was built in 1928 and was a McCornack Oil Company full-service gas station.

“It’s a new time for our organization … and we want people excited about us,” said Alison Costanzo, the museum’s executive director, of the changes.

Costanzo joined the museum in January. She was previously an educator and Victorian site coordinator for the Lombard Historical Society and a play facilitator at the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville.

The changes revealed today are only the start of a fresh era at the museum.

Costanzo has reached out to existing partners and formed new partnerships to enhance the programming at the museum.

Costanzo on Monday shared plans with the St. Charles City Council to beautify the museum grounds, install a rain barrel and plant a sustainable landscape.

Assisting the museum with the effort are the city of St. Charles, the St. Charles Park District, Fermilab and Pizzo Native Plant Nursery.

The park district’s Primrose Farm in St. Charles Township will donate some spice plants for the garden, as well as a John Deere walking plow for display, said Laura Johns, manager of farm programs and interpretive services at Primrose.

Primrose also will bring a baby calf to the museum grounds and teach butter-making so visitors can learn about early farm life in St. Charles during an event called “MOO into Summer” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 at the museum.

“We’ll help make ourselves relevant to the future while preserving the needs of the past,” Johns said.

Another effort underway at the museum is the “It’s a

Big Dill” temporary exhibition that opens to the public June 6. The exhibit will explore St. Charles’ previous role as the pickle capital of the world for more than 40 years.

Longtime museum member Steve Martin said he is looking forward to the exhibit. He had also served on the museum’s executive board for about 19 years.

Martin said he supports

the ideas coming from Costanzo and the museum staff, such as referring to the museum building as the St. Charles History Museum rather than the previously used St. Charles Heritage Center.

The heritage center title was first developed because the museum used to operate two sites – the current building and the separate Dunham Hunt Museum, Martin said.

“You need to step forward and come up with new ways of presenting things to keep it fresh,” Martin said. “Some people may not like it, but other people will embrace it.”

Costanzo said all the changes and progress at the museum are a team effort between herself, the staff, the executive board and the various community partnerships.

“It’s a place where I want everyone to come and be involved,” she said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 Board approved a $973,565 technology plan for the 2015-16 school year, which involved a second cost reduction from a previously offered plan because of a choice to lease some computers instead of buying them.

The plan, presented by Technology Director Elizabeth Janowiak, further reduced the proposed technology spending from $997,000.

Previously the technology plan spending proposal had been $1.3 million.

Officials voted this week on a plan that includes increased wireless coverage and portable devices for 480 sixth-graders – whittled down to $550 apiece from $600.

Still gone from the plan is replacing the Mack Olson Gym sound system and expanding security cameras, officials said.

Janowiak had said the upgrades would be delayed, and they would make do for another year.

The plan’s cost reduction comes from a choice to lease 30 desktop computers at $1,117 for Project Lead the Way, a computer science course. Janowiak said the computers would work with monitors the district already has in place.

“They are expensive, but very powerful computers,” Janowiak said.

Board member David Lamb praised the extra effort at cost reduction.

“Our … staff produced the results. A job well done,” Lamb said. “I am in favor of what we have in front of us.”

Batavia letter carrier Bob Grenchik hopes that residents will do their part to help stamp out hunger in Kane County.

The Batavia post office is one of several in the area taking part in the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive being organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association.

Residents served by the Batavia, St. Charles, North Aurora, Maple Park and Elburn post offices are being asked to place nonperishable food items next to their mailboxes by 9 a.m. May 9.

drive and said he is happy to help out. The food that is collected will go to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, which serves economically disadvantaged residents in Batavia and Batavia Township.

The food drive usually collects between 8,000 and 9,000 pounds of nonperishable food for the food pantry, Grenchik said.

“In 2004, we collected 14,000 pounds, which was the most we have collected,” he said.

The North Aurora post office will collect food for the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora, and the Elburn and Maple Park post offices will collect food for the Elburn Food Pantry.

This year’s Fox Valley Academy Concerto Competition winner Clare Scheidler, a violinist from Aurora, will perform Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto, La Stavaganza “The Eccentric.” In addi-

Cost of Sixth Street School teardown being renegotiated GENEVA – The county is continuing to take steps toward the demolition of Sixth Street School even as it faces pushback from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

A Kane County Board committee on Wednesday supported a resolution amending the contract between the county and the Geneva Public Library

District to account for the higher-than-anticipated demolition costs.

The total project cost is about $450,000, or about $150,000 more than what was listed in the original agreement between the county and library. The county is selling the Geneva property, located at 210 S. Sixth St., to the library for $1.5 million. Boards for each entity voted on the matter in January.

Noting the Geneva City Council’s decision to allow the demolition, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he is worried by how much money the county would have to spend to satisfy those hundreds of miles away.

“It is a requirement to spend money,” he said.

Biggs said he would have more information about the topic at next week’s Executive Committee meeting.

Road work ahead for Randall Road KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Starting this week, pavement milling and paving work, as part of the annual resurfacing program, will begin on Randall Road from Red Haw Lane to Dean Street.

Work will begin at Dean Street and progress north.

Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for approximately the next three weeks, weather permitting, according to a news release.

The resurfacing process will include: • The removal and replacement of sidewalk approaches and curbs at Dean Street.

• Removal of 3 inches of existing pavement to allow for the new surface course to be placed.

• Placement of 3 inches of

asphalt over an oil application to provide a new smooth riding surface.

• Restriping and shouldering of the roadways once asphalt is completed.

Temporary daily lane closures Monday through Saturday will be required to accomplish this work, the release stated. Drivers are urged to watch for sidewalk closures, fresh oil signs, flaggers, and reduced speed while traveling through the construction zone.

Motorists should expect delays and increased travel times during the resurfacing process, and are advised to consider alternate routes during the work, the release stated.

Boosters seek to buy new band uniforms editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Friends of Geneva High School Band and the Geneva Music Boosters are raising funds to replace the band uniforms, which were bought in 1998.

The Geneva School Board has committed to covering half of the $113,000 cost of new uniforms, but the remaining half must be raised from within the schools and the community.

To date, $34,700 has been generated, leaving about $21,800 more to be raised.

With the uniforms ready to be ordered, the Friends of Geneva High School Band and the Geneva Music Boosters are asking the community for help in reaching the finale.

Water main project ahead for 5th Ave. in STC ST. CHARLES – A large-scale project involving a water main replacement on North Fifth Avenue is expected to be completed by September.

About 5,400 feet of water main will be replaced on Fifth Avenue, which is also known as Route 25, between North Avenue and the south end of the Q Center property just south of Country Club Road. Water

mains also will be replaced on Iroquois Avenue between North Fifth and Third avenues, and on Allen Lane between North Fifth Avenue to the dead end.

In addition to causing lane closures on North Fifth Avenue, the work will cause interruptions of water service in the affected areas. Residents will be notified of interruptions in advance.

Patience is right policy for Feds BLOOMBERG NEWS The Federal Reserve indicated Wednesday it is willing to wait a few more months – and possibly longer – before pulling back further on economic stimulus. Judging from the latest data on output and inflation, patience is absolutely the right policy.

In deciding when to end what has been an unprecedented period of near-zero interest rates, the Fed must strike a delicate balance. On the one hand, it wants to spur enough growth to get millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans back to work, and to get stagnant wages rising again.

On the other, it doesn’t want to start an inflationary spiral that would be difficult to control.

Fresh data on the state of the economy suggest the Fed still has plenty of room to run.

The Commerce Department estimates that gross domestic product increased at an annualized, inflation-adjusted rate of only 0.2 percent in the first three months of this year, well below the 30-year average of 2.7 percent.

A stronger dollar weighed on exports, while a plunge in oil prices took a bite out of

business investment as energy companies cut back. Consumers chose to hang on to much of the money they saved at the gasoline pump – a move that will benefit their finances in the long run but dampens spending in the short term.

Inflation, meanwhile, has been hard to find. Thanks in large part to cheaper oil, the Commerce Department’s measure of consumer prices actually declined at an annualized rate of 2 percent in the first quarter.

Excluding food and energy, prices rose at an annualized rate of only 0.9 percent, well below the Fed’s overall target of 2 percent. Here’s how that looks: In the statement it released at the end of its two-day policy meeting, the Fed recognized the economic slowdown, which it attributed in part to “transitory factors.” True, growth is expected to bounce back from a difficult winter, but with the country still short at least three million jobs, the damage wrought by the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession remains far from undone.

Until the evidence of inflationary pressures becomes overwhelming, the Fed should keep trying.

Gov. Rauner, please restore the grant that funds the ITQ and help us save the lives of our fellow residents, as well as save the state millions of dollars in health care costs.

VIKINGS TAKE COUNTY CROWN

Well, at least the words that began with that letter.

As the Vikings’ Foster Ignoffo darted across the finish line to end the 4x400 meter relay – just ahead of St. Charles East counterpart Elizabeth Chmelik – several teammates shouted her last name.

Geneva’s victory in the final event then prompted another exclamation: “INSANE!” The comeback win preserved Geneva’s late lead against the host Saints in the Kane County girls track and field meet. The Vikings finished the relay in 4:05.39 and the 16-team meet with 108 points. East followed with a time of 4:06.64 and 100 team points.

“That was amazing,” said Ignoffo, whose relay teammates included Janie McCloughan, Colette Malovany and Georgia Reed. “East has won state championships in the relay and has a bunch of great athletes. We feel so great about what we did as a team.”

Vikings coach Peter Raak called the night’s final result “a pleasant surprise.” The Vikings have had strong workouts throughout the season, but things seemed to click on a chilly night.

For East, which cobbled together its final relay near the end of the meet, the refrain was similar.

“We’ve got to get healthy for this final stretch of the year,” coach Tim Wolf said.

Batavia (96) finished third, eight points ahead of five-time defending champion West Aurora. Kaneland (70) was fifth.

The Bulldogs especially enjoyed success in the relays, where some order of sophomore Hannah Schlaman, senior Audrey Jonke, senior Catie Ross and freshman Tori Ortiz won the 4x100 and 4x200.

“We’re very thankful to be able to run as a group,” Ross said. “We try to keep it together and we develop really nice relationships, being part of the team and working together. And I think that really

shows through with our performance.”

Although the Vikings toppled West Aurora’s reign, not every old standby bowed out.

county record set last season with an effort of 2:11.8 in the 800, finishing nearly three seconds better than her old standard and ahead of East senior stalwart Torree Scull.

“I could tell she was really

close to me on the first lap, but then I couldn’t really hear here anymore as much as I could before, so I knew I was starting to pull away,” Liz said.

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Every individual match matters when it comes to the Upstate Eight Conference boys tennis standings. If a team is up 3-0 or down 0-3 early in a dual meet, it behooves teams to close out matches strong knowing every match counts.

In River Division action on Thursday night, St. Charles East jumped out to a 3-0 lead in singles play against Geneva before taking three out of four in doubles play to close out a 6-1 victory on the road.

With Batavia winning the division by only one point in 2014 to capture its third straight title, it’s easy to see why East head coach Rob Livermore was all about taking it

one game at a time.

After dropping No. 1 doubles to the talented Geneva pair of Brad Burgess and Nick Simone, the Saints rebounded to score three-set victories at No. 2, 3 and 4 doubles.

“We won [three] three-setters there on the back end, and that’s all about refocusing and finishing matches out,” Livermore said. “For conference play, every court matters, so even though we had the team win locked, they still knew their matches were important not only to them, but to the team.”

The Saints managed to clinch their team victory with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory from the No. 2 doubles team of Chris Horn and Zac Crane. The two juniors started to find their rhythm late in the first set and controlled the tempo through-

out Sets 2 and 3.

“We were real pleased with how they responded after that first set,” Livermore said.

“They were pretty dominant in that second set, and they built off that the rest of the match.”

Geneva finally got on the board with a 7-5, 6-1 win from Burgess and Simone who have proven to be a real bright spot for the Vikings this year.

“They’re really starting to put it together. Even in the loss [Tuesday]against St. Charles North, they still played pretty well,” Geneva head coach Zach Evans said. “Today might have been the best they’ve played so far this season.”

In the final two doubles matches, the Jack DeJure and Tyler Harding defeated Will Youman and Jake Stellick 6-2,

2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 doubles, while the No. 3 pairing from East of Nick Stellon and Kevin Fortier managed a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Adam Said and Seth Dickinson.

In singles play, Nick Hauptmann and Kevin Schreiner were both victorious for East on the No. 1 and 2 lines with identical 6-0, 6-1 scores. The No. 3 singles match was won

by St. Charles East’s Charlie Downing, 6-2, 6-0.

“We have our roster set up to live and die by the doubles play,” Evans said of his difficulties in singles play. “If we can get a win from singles that’d be fantastic and they’re starting to hit through the ball a lot better.

“I think those wins at the singles spots are going to start coming pretty soon.”

North Stars beat Bulldogs, lead division

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Batavia boys tennis team snapped St. Charles North’s conference match winning streak Thursday night, but lost ground to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division leader.

The Bulldogs won the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles contests while the North Stars won the remaining matches to take a 5-2 victory.

Batavia’s most impressive win was at No. 1 singles, a grueling 2-plus hour match between North’s Aaron Amburgey and Batavia’s Adam Maris. Maris won the match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, which was one

of four contests that went to three sets.

“It was a big victory for Adam. All year he is gone out and done the job against top notch competition,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “He knows the game. He knows what he is capable of doing and what his opponent is capable of doing. He is able to take advantage of the situation.”

Amburgey battled hand and calf cramps in the second and third sets.

“I think Aaron, in the last set and a half, couldn’t move and he gutted it out,” North coach Sean Masoncup said.

“The match was hard to play.

Entering the UEC River dual meet, North led the division with 21 team points by virtue of sweeping all seven matches in their previous three conference bouts.

The Bulldogs were in second place with 19 points.

The North Stars (13-1, 4-0 UEC River) now lead the Bulldogs (10-4, 3-1) in division standings by five points, 26–21, with three more conference duals left.

“To get this early lead is nice but we are not satisfied by any stretch of the imagination,” Masoncup said.

North won the first two matches of the day, No. 3 dou-

bles and No. 3 singles, both in two sets.

Batavia’s Andrew Nelson and Nick Robinson finally broke North’s winning streak by beating North’s Tom Ninan and Trevor Kurtzahls, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 2 doubles match.

“I was a little concerned after we lost the first two matches. I thought it might get away from us,” Brad Nelson said.

“But our guys have bounced back all year long. We have been in three-set situations so many times.”

North prevailed in remaining three-set matches include a nail biter at No. 4 doubles.

Novotney hit a fly ball to East right fielder Brendan Benvenuti. As soon as Novotney saw Benvenuti put his glove up to shield the sun, he took off running. Benvenuti Kyle could not corral Novotney the fly ball, allowing Novotney to slide into second.

The next batter, John LeGare, singled to right to score Novotney and tie the score.

“That was huge for us,” Novotney said. “When I saw him lose it in the sun, I took off for second. When you get on second to begin an inning, it is easy for my guys to get me in.”

That play summed up North

getting the sweep. The North Stars took advantage of East’s mishaps, but the Saints could not do the same when they got the chance.

East coach Len Asquini was much happier with the effort of his group, saying that Thursday’s game was much more of what is expected in a rivalry game.

“Today was much more competitive,” Asquini said. “I thought Austin was terrific, giving us a chance to win, and it just didn’t happen today. I think us being more competitive, although still a loss, kind of springboards us for the next few games.”

After LeGare singled, he stole second, and scored on another RBI single by Zach Mettetal.

One big reason North was able to hold the 2-1 advantage

for the final three innings was reliever Christian Sidoti.

Sidoti pitched in relief of starter Sam Hubbe, who gave up the unearned run in the first.

The junior pitcher retired seven of the nine batters he faced, and got a big boost for the game’s final out.

East tried to get a runner to third in the seventh, but North catcher Kyle Khoury threw Jake Milosch out at third to draw a huge cheer from the North dugout, completing the sweep of the Saints.

“Our guys are really starting to buy in,” Genke said.

“It’s hard to get a group to do that, but I think they are starting to see just how good they can be when we play our style baseball. It’s going to do a lot for us moving forward to the rest of our season.”

Knights remain in Northern Illinois Big 12 race

BY TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com DeKALB – Entering Thursday night’s match against the DeKalb girls soccer team, Kaneland had not allowed a goal since it’s 1-0 loss to Sycamore less than three weeks ago.

A Barbs’ goal midway through the first half broke the deadlock and broke that impressive defensive streak by the Knights, but it wasn’t enough in a 2-1 loss Thursday to Kaneland.

Kaneland bounced back with a goal before the halftime whistle, and with the wind at their back, the Knights took the lead on a goal by Kiandra Powell in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Kaneland would hold onto that lead and escape with a big Northern Illinois Big 12 East win.

“It was kind of a shock to start off down because I don’t think we have been scored on that early,” Powell said. “It was shocking, but then we got our butts in gear and did it.”

“We played really well together. I think we came out strong in the first half with that goal,” DeKalb junior captain Kayla Baum said.

With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, a nice 1-2 between Courtney Diddell and Holly Collingbourne put Diddell toward the corner. The senior forward fired a cross from the end line into the Barbs’ box.

The ball bounced off DeKalb defender Riley Bauling into her own net. There was nothing the senior center back could do, but that tied the score at 1 at the half.

“I am not going to take one bad bounce of the ball and have that deter the bigger things that we are seeing in this match tonight,” Barbs coach PJ Hamilton said. “I thought that, being a young team, we showed a lot of heart, showed a lot of fight and we continue to do the small things.”

Nine minutes into the second half, Powell got her chance

to make her mark on the game.

The junior collected a ball outside the box and ran toward the goal. The shot hit Barbs goalkeeper Lauren Haglestein in the hand, but it trickled to the back of the net.

“As soon as I hit the ball with my leg, I just knew I was going for the corner,” Powell said. “It was redemption because I went right over the goal last year.

And, it just felt so great.”

The Barbs’ best chance to equalize late came 12 minutes from time. Caitlyn Hottsmith powered through the Kaneland defense and ripped a quality shot. Unfortunately, the ball smashed off the crossbar and the chance was gone. It was the third crossbar hit in the contest.

The Knights outshot DeKalb, 13-6, and 8-1 with shots on target.

Haglestein finished the contest with seven saves. Kaneland also had two corners to the Barbs’ one.

“How we played together – we keep taking steps forward and getting better and better,” Baum said. “This isn’t a let down. We can keep building off of this.”

ST. CHARLES – Sweeping any team is a good feeling. But after St. Charles North baseball had been swept by rival East the past two seasons, Thursday’s chance to return the favor was high on the list of many North Stars.

In a game that was much more like the games expected between the two, North took advantage of its chances to beat East, 2-1, to complete the three-game Upstate Eight Conference River Division sweep.

“These are the kinds of feelings we work all offseason for,” said junior Kyle Novotney. “This is showing that our hard work is paying off.”

North (17-4, 11-3 UEC River) now controls its own destiny, holding the top spot in the Riv-

er Division. For the first time in the three games, the North Stars fell behind. East scored a run in the top of the first when Reid Olson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Coach Todd Genke was pleased that his team was able to stay focused and finish off the sweep.

“I don’t think there’s ever a doubt with this group that we are going to win,” Genke said.

“We know our bats will eventually come around, and we have good enough pitching to keep us in games to do so. Today was a very good baseball game and to come out on top is pretty sweet and satisfying.”

NOTEWORTHY Kaneland’s confidence high after conference run Even last summer, Kaneland baseball coach Brian Aversa knew pitching and defense would be the team’s strong points in 2015.

Aversa also knew that if the bats came around, his Knights team would be very dangerous. In a Northern Illinois Big 12 East sweep over DeKalb last week, the offense was sure in full force.

But with the last game of the series with the Barbs being a two-run game after two double-digit wins, Aversa liked that his team has been able to win different types of games.

“We’re playing with extremely high confidence right now,” Aversa said. “Our pitching and defense has been outstanding. We’re hoping to keep building on this momentum we have.”

Chantel Carranza beat a couple of defenders before crossing the ball to Cunningham, whose diving header found the back of the net for what turned out to be the game-winner for now 15-0 East.

“We had a few nerves in the beginning, but once we started connecting I think we controlled most of the match,” Cunningham said. “This year we have so much more confidence than any of the four years I’ve played here.”

National Nurses Week a time to say thanks Sometimes it is difficult to get beyond my wheelchair to celebrate various holidays and commemorations.

I miss the fireworks, the parades, the worship, the parties.

My family tends to be low key (translation: gifts for them, a card for me).

Fortunately, there’s a whole week ahead for celebration, and all I need is to share a big smile and some pride.

It’s National Nurses Week beginning Wednesday, May 6.

I can enthusiastically join this crowd since – by last count – I have been a nurse for 56 years. I can still put the RN after my name but need to add the abbreviation for “retired,” which has to do with not really being authorized to practice anymore and infers that I am far past my prime and probably way out of touch with the way things are now.

Granted.

Nurses intersect with our lives in many ways: When it’s time for those childhood immunizations; when your child is born; they’re there reassuring you when a loved one is at risk; and

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry when the bridge between life and death is crossed. They are there at any hour, making time and space for you only, caring.

My own role as a nurse was primarily as an educator or administrator hoping to influence competence, compassion, critical thinking and ethical practice. That’s a high expectation and a tough thing to trace.

Ever so often, a former student from the University of Wisconsin -Madison, the University of Illinois, DePaul, Rush or Aurora will present her or himself with a knowing smile and we connect. Wherever you are, I salute you on your special week.

A shout out to those CNAs on the team who deliver such fine care in indispensable ways. Those ladies from India at Pine View are a great bunch,

and I am thankful for their care.

High fives to the staff at the Delnor ER. Irene Gonzales of Provena Home Care wins Nurse of the Year every year in my book.

How to celebrate? When you come across a nurse, give a smile and a thumbs up. Touch your heart, blow a kiss or just say thanks.

And, if you are in a position to do so, plan for a raise in salary, add more nurses so that the load is reasonable and – please – listen. These people are licensed, well-educated professionals.

Don’t take away from that well-earned respect by insisting that their role in marketing your enterprise is to engage in mindless slogans.

Meanwhile, perhaps more than a coincidence, National Police Week also is in May! Here’s another force for the safety and well-being of us all. We hear the popular phrase “first responders” and immediately reflect on the risk, the enormous challenge, and the dedication and courage of these professionals.

CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library, in partnership with the St. Charles Park District, hosted the Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee for adults ages 50 and older April 24 at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles.

This year’s first-place winner was John Wohlert of St. Charles, and Brian Sullivan of St. Charles took second place. The winning word was “elucidate.”

Both contestants will advance to the regional bee for a chance to compete at the state level, which will take place Aug. 10 at the Illinois State Fair. The statewide event provides Illinois adults with the opportunity to showcase a lifetime of knowledge and to celebrate years of experience through spelling activities, which allow continual learning and keep the brain active.

Geneva students to be part of painting made of people KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Mill Creek Elementary School students will become art Thursday, May 14, when the students form a giant living painting of a viking ship that can only be seen from the sky.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mill Creek Elementary School, N900 Brundige Road, Geneva.

Photographs will be taken at 12:45 p.m.

Under the direction of conceptual artist Daniel Dancer of the Art For the Sky program,

students will work together to create the image that will be photographed from at least 80 feet in the air, states a news release.

“The children and families are very excited about this opportunity to be part of such a fun educational and artistic event,” Mill Creek art teacher Sarah Brady said in the release. “It provides a chance to work together as a team for a very large art project that also teaches valuable lessons about taking care of our world.”

Our friend’s dog had been running loose through some marshland that afternoon, and several ticks it picked up bit my husband. When he noticed the bulls-eye inflammation, we called our doctor, who said to come in right away and have it checked.

Learning how to relax is valuable antidote to stress Dear Doctor K: I’m under a lot of stress, and I’d like to learn more about the “relaxation response.”

What is it? How can I achieve it?

Dear Reader: At Harvard Medical School, we do a lot of traditional “Western” scientific research.

But we also have a long history of studying “Eastern” concepts of how the body works, disease and treatment. In the late 1970s, Harvard cardiologist Herbert Benson conducted research into the health hazards of stress – and the body’s potential to heal itself.

One antidote to stress that Dr. Benson studied was the relaxation response.

To understand the relaxation response, it helps to know how your body responds to stress.

Let’s say you see a menacing dog approach. Instantly, your senses sharpen, your muscles tighten, your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises and your breathing quickens. (I’ve put an illustration of the body’s stress response on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

In the short term, the stress response can be very helpful: It prepares you to fight or to flee danger.

And the stress response doesn’t help only in situations of life or death. At work, for example, stress can improve your performance in the face of a tight deadline.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In the long term, however, stress contributes to a number of health problems. It elevates blood pressure and makes your body less able to fight off infection and disease.

The relaxation response counters the stress response. Heartbeat and breathing slow down. The body uses less oxygen, and blood flows more easily through the arteries and veins.

Many techniques may be used to elicit the relaxation response.

These include: • Breath focus. You breathe slowly and deeply while disengaging your mind from distracting thoughts and sensations.

• Body scan. You focus on one part of the body or group of muscles at a time and release any tension you feel there.

• Guided imagery. You use pleasing mental images to help you relax and focus.

• Mindfulness meditation. You breathe deeply while staying in the moment. You deliberately focus on thoughts and sensations that arise during the meditation

session.

• Yoga, tai chi or qigong. You breathe rhythmically while moving through a series of postures or flowing movements.

• Repetitive prayer. You use a short prayer to help enhance breath focus.

A mind-body program, relaxation response CD, or meditation or yoga classes may help you to learn these techniques.

When I joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School, I had a slightly older colleague who was particularly brilliant and very intense. He commanded respect for his intellect, but it was tough to warm up to him. As a result, people didn’t always listen to what he had to say. It was their loss, and his.

About a year after I first met him, I was astonished to learn that he had started practicing the relaxation response in his office every afternoon. Some said his wife had suggested it. Within a few months, he had become one of our most revered colleagues. It was our gain, and his.

She wasn’t sure what to do because she still cared for him and thought he might eventually change his behavior. Yes, he will change his behavior, but it will only get worse. Cowards who beat their girlfriends do so to exert power. They beat women because they are afraid to pick on men.

I have been in a physically abusive relationship, and I also thought that, in time, my love would calm the beast. I was wrong and things only got worse.

He finally beat me so bad that he broke my jaw. I wound up in the hospital and stayed there five days. My father called the police, and the guy was arrested and is now in prison.

Since the food was basic Italian cuisine, it shows that is not the villain in your battle of the “bulge.” Is it possible that because her food is the best “this side of Rome,” you eat more for enjoyment than for survival?

Losing weight is a difficult task. But by learning what to eat and what to avoid you can have positive results.

Eat more vegetables – broccoli, zucchini, and other fresh vegetables that can be more delicious when smothered in grandma’s marinara sauce without added cheese or meat. You should also limit pasta to one small serving and request only a small amount of cheese on your single slice of pizza. If you make a special effort to avoid junk foods, start an exercise program and get proper rest you will lose those extra pounds.

What should East discard?

North’s three-spade rebid was aggressive. His heart honors were surely worthless, and his partner denied positive values when he failed to jump to two spades. But South, once invited, had no hesitation in bidding game.

This deal occurred during a North American Mixed Pairs Championship in the 1950s. East was Helen Sobel. She realized that her husband had to have club values. So she “discarded” a spade at trick two and shifted to a club, giving her side the first four tricks.

Since this deal happened so long ago, West had actually led the heart king and continued with his ace. After the deal, Al Sobel said, “Thank you for ruffing my ace, partner.” Note that if East does discard, say, a club at trick two, declarer with careful play can take 10 tricks: five spades, three diamonds and two heart ruffs in the dummy.
