By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills will go on without its chief incorporator and first village president at the helm, following Tuesday’s election results.

Village President-Elect Harry Blecker said the first order of business after he is sworn in May 5 will be to improve the village’s image – particularly after months of battles between trustees and current Village President Patsy Smith.

Blecker said he will seek applications from the public to fill the trustee vacancy created when he becomes the village president.

“We are going to solicit applications from anybody who is interested, and they will be passed around to all board members,” Blecker said.

Blecker said he will not reappoint William Braithwaite as village attorney but most likely expects to appoint Julie Tappendorf, who served as the legislative council to trustees.

Blecker said he also expects to reappoint Police Chief Dan Hoffman, but probably not until the board’s second meeting in May and only if the chief is agreeable to it. Smith tried several times to deny reappointment to Hoffman, but the board majority blocked her.

In an email, Smith cautioned that Blecker “should weigh the evidence before extending Chief Hoffman’s term.” Both Blecker and Hoffman did not respond, except to laugh. Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said she is ready to work with a new board.

“I’m excited about the diversity of talent and the skills of the people who will be serving,” Johnsen said. “I know that with those skills, we can all work together to move the village forward and continue to grow.”

along with newcomer Michael O’Dwyer. Nicholas Girka was elected clerk. All were part of Blecker’s slate.

“Really, what’s next for the village is just to move forward to get back to business,” Johnsen said. “We have a lot of projects on our plate right now. We need to redefine what the village stands for, set our own ordinances and create a sense of community – which is something we’ve been working on since incorporation, but something far from complete.”

In an email, Smith wrote she would not second-guess the new village leadership – but she cautioned that Blecker should not allow the village administrator “to supervise the appointed treasurer.”

Again, Blecker laughed in response.

Smith had placed Johnsen

on administrative leave briefly last year, as they clashed over the Johnsen’s role, among other issues.

“I was not willing to walk away from the village, hand it over to opponents who I believe are ill-equipped, without giving the voters a choice.

And our slate provided that option,” Smith wrote, explaining her decision to be a writein candidate.

“I know that I served, as Campton Hills’ first village president, by doing what I believed was right and best for the village, and [I] look forward to whatever the future may hold,” Smith wrote.

As to the next phase of her life, Smith wrote she put her life on hold to serve the community 10 years ago and has “10 years of closets to clean and projects at home waiting to be tackled.”

PATCHWORK APPROACH “Corneal abrasion,” which is scratching of the clear outer layer at the front of the eye, is one of the most common kinds of eye injuries. Corneal abrasions are quick to heal, but they are painful.

The traditional treatment for this injury involves wearing an eye patch. However, there is research that suggests that the initial use of an eye patch actually slows healing and does not reduce pain.

Moreover, researchers conclude that since corneal abrasions do not affect vision to a great extent, it is rather pointless to render patients with scratched corneas “monocular” (one-eyed). Foregoing the use of an eye patch may actually help corneal abrasions heal more quickly on the first day after the injury.

P.S. The cornea is vulnerable to burning from excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Zonta Club of St. Charles to host Lunafest film festival tonight

Lunafest – a film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities – will begin at 7 p.m. today at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a guest reception with the fest’s local sponsors, said Laurie Perry, president of the local Zonta Club.

‘A POWERFUL THING TO DO’ CASA seeking to add male volunteers; Hands Around the Courthouse taking place today

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Dave Carrell’s work helping abused and neglected children started in 2012 with this Google search: “Kane County volunteer opportunities.”

“I ran across CASA – not only did it sound interesting; it sounded challenging,” said Carrell, a Campton Hills resident.

Carrell was sworn in as a court-appointed special advocate, or CASA, in November 2012 and has never looked back.

Carrell mentors one of the 29 people that will be sworn in as CASAs at noon today at the 11th Annual Hands Around the Courthouse event at the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St., Geneva. The event is held to bring a sense of community and attention to child abuse in April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

CASAs give children who are part of abuse and neglect cases a voice in the court system, said Debra McQuaid, director of advocate education for CASA Kane County.

The CASAs meet with the children and the people in their lives on an ongoing basis to prepare reports and recommendations whenever the children’s cases are up for a court hearing.

There are 10 men in the latest group of CASAs, and about 75 of the current 247 active CA-

SAs are male, McQuaid said.

“We’ve been trying to get the word out that we need more men,” McQuaid said.

The organization has a vested interested in recruiting males for the benefit of the chil-

dren it serves. For some of the boys in the cases, their only male role models are men who are accused of hurting them, McQuaid said.

Carrell said becoming a CASA was eye-opening for him because it showed the true extent of how dire some of the children’s situations can be. Each CASA is thoroughly trained and warned up front about the extended time commitment involved in taking on a case, he said.

Carrell uses his experience as an employee benefit consultant to stay organized as he meets with the children and various adults in his cases, then prepares his reports for the judge.

Another male CASA, Dave Wieck of Batavia, said his work as a school psychologist in the

Kendall County Special Education Co-op prepared him well to handle the volunteer role.

Wieck became a CASA in 2008 after looking for a way to give back to the community after he retired.

CASAs are strong role models for children because they stay with them for as long as their case is in the system. The longer the CASAs are in the children’s lives, the more those children will trust the CASA and be willing to open up to them, Wieck said.

Wieck and Carrell have shared their experiences at “Looking For a Few Good Men,” a series of public meetings to educate males about the experience of being a CASA. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pal Joey’s, 31 N. River St. in Batavia, Mc-

Onzick said the position’s salary was advertised as up to $75,000, but he didn’t know what salary was agreed upon.

Board members hope to receive more details about the sheriff’s budget at an upcoming meeting of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, which Kramer reports to.

John Hoscheit, who chairs the Finance Committee, said it is difficult to analyze the sheriff’s budget without knowing more details.

“Until we get the information, we can’t evaluate it,” he said, adding he is “cautiously optimistic” more information will be known in the next month.

GENEVA – If voters sent one message Tuesday, it’s that they don’t want another tax increase, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said Wednesday, listing the various referendums that failed.

While the county didn’t have an item on the ballot, he told the Executive Committee it is important for the county to “nurse” its finances so it has the flexibility to respond to budgetary items outside its control.

This year, that means keeping a watchful eye on the sheriff’s budget.

Sheriff Donald Kramer decided to reduce the number of federal inmates housed at the jail, thereby forfeiting more than $2 million in budgeted revenue.

His decision prompted the County Board to trim his budget and to closely monitor his revenues and expenses through monthly budget performance reports.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told the Executive Committee that as of Monday the sheriff’s office is about $356,100 below expected revenues and about $212,600 below budgeted expenditures, meaning the sheriff is over budget by about $143,000.

Kane County Board continues to keep close eye on sheriff’s budget

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With Houston Street in downtown Batavia set to be reconstructed by the summer, the Batavia Park District is being forced to move Windmill City Festival to Engstrom Park this year.

The 14-acre Engstrom Park is at 326 Millview Drive, near Batavia High School. Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said Engstrom Park is the best option for the festival, which will be July 9 to July 12.

The park district will be partnering with the neighboring Batavia High School and Batavia Covenant Church to provide parking for the festival, Niemela said. She said all of the other park district activities set to take place on the Batavia Riverwalk will still go on as scheduled at that location. Houston Street is near the Batavia Riverwalk.

Niemela said the park district hand-delivered let-

ters to residents living near Engstrom Park notifying them of Windmill City Festival’s change of location. To prevent any noise problems in the neighborhood, Niemela said the park district has carefully chosen the location of the festival’s entertainment stage.

The park district will host an informational meeting about plans for Windmill City Fest at 7 p.m. April 27 at the Batavia Park District Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St. Despite the Houston Street construction work, the Art in Your Eye festival put on by Batavia MainStreet will still be from August 14 to August 16 on the Batavia Riverwalk.

Other Batavia MainStreet activities also will be this summer on the Batavia Riverwalk, including Green Fair on the Fox and the Taste of Batavia Block Party.

“We are just trying to find ways to adapt,” Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero said.

He was born May 9, 1925 in Geneva, Illinois. Robert was the son of Theo and Paul Scott. He was a sibling to sisters, Blanche and Phyllis and brothers, Leonard and Beryl.

Robert served in WWII from 1943 to 1945 with the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, of the U.S. Army Air Corps. This included six months as a military policeman guarding military establishments and prisoners in England.

After WWII he returned to Wasco, IL and graduated from Burlington Central High School. Eventually he moved to St. Charles and was primarily employed as a carpenter with Carpenters Union Local 363.

He was a past commander of Post 1195 of the American Legion in Wasco and a current member of Post 75 of the American Legion in Geneva, and a member of Voiture Locale #592 of 40 Et 8.

He married Dorothy Parquette on September 6, 1952 at Methodist Church in St. Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Scott of 62 years. His children: David (Mary) Scott of Batavia; Barbara (James) Bowman of South Whitley, Indiana; Keith (Deneen) Scott of St. Charles; Ruthanne Scott of St. Charles; Mary (Raymond) Shaver of Jackson, Tennessee; Sandra (Lawrence) Prinner of Hampshire; 12 grandchildren, Adam Scott, Joshua Bowman, Kourtney Scott, Mia Scott, Alexia Scott, Holden Scott, Brittney (Josh) Mitchell, Bridget Shaver, Raymond Shaver II, Brianna Shaver, Lawrence T. Cletus “Happy” Gass died in Wenatchee, WA on April 3, 2015.

He was born at home in Belleville, IL on March 17, 1926, to Katherine (nee Hopfinger) and Joseph Gass.

After graduating from Chaminade Academy in St. Louis, he was drafted into the Navy to fight in World War II. Using the GI Bill, he graduated from Iowa State University. Several years later he met his future wife, Eda (Joey) Piccinini of St. Charles, IL, while finishing his graduate degree at Northern Illinois University. They were married on August 26, 1961, at St. Patrick Catholic Church and settled in St. Charles. He was an active member at St. Patrick’s, and was a voice for peace and justice. He and his wife spent three years as volunteers in Uganda, Africa.

Happy is survived by his wife, Joey; and his three children, Christopher (Carey) of Tempe, AZ, Martha (Greg Taylor) of St. Charles, and Ellen (Hans Slette) of Leavenworth, WA; and by six grandchildren, Felicia, Ericca, and Grace Gass, and Vincent, Cole, and Shane Slette. He is also survived by his brother, Anthony of Belleville, IL; and two sisters, Juanita Wallen of Belleville, IL, and Bernice Spesser of Kevil, KY; and 52 beloved nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

Portions of Route 25 to be closed through Fri. As part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s ongoing construction project, portions of Route 25/ Stearns Road at the railroad tracks will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday to allow for continued railroad bridge demolition work that is taking longer than anticipated.

A posted detour will continue to route vehicles around the project site using Route 64, Route 25, Kirk Road, Dunham Road and East Middle Street.

Two close races in Tuesday’s consolidated election illustrate an often-said adage that every vote counts.

In Geneva’s 1st Ward aldermanic race, Tara Burghart got 250 votes to Patrick Lenski’s 243, a seven-vote difference.

And in the Kaneland District 302 School board race, Ryan Kerry squeaked by in fourth place with 905 votes, five more than Dan Nagel, who finished fifth with 900 votes.

All totals are unofficial until the votes are certified.

According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, the last day to certify the votes is April 28.

“I was hoping for a higher turnout,” Kerry said. “But I’m glad the people who did show up, did. Five votes between me and Dan is ridiculously close.”

Nagel did not return a voice mail message or text seeking comment. Kerry said he had not spoken to Nagel and did not know whether Nagel would seek a recount.

In the Kaneland race, according to Kane County election statistics, the turnout was 13.46 percent, 2,056 ballots cast out of 15,280 registered voters.

In the Geneva 1st Ward race, turnout was 19.32 percent, according to election statistics, with 510 votes cast out of 2,640 registered voters.

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said 16 absentee ballots are still out in Kaneland, so the totals and possibly the results could change.

The clerk’s office has until April 21 to receive and count absentee ballots, he said.

Three absentee ballots are still out in Geneva’s 1st Ward, not enough to change the outcome, Cunningham said.

Lenski said he would not seek a discovery recount.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m happy for Tara and wish her luck,” Lenski said.

Burghart said she would

be getting organized to take her seat when she is sworn in next month.

“It seems as if my lead will hold,” Burghart said.

“There’s a few things I want to do to get organized. I want to meet with department heads and hit the ground running.”

Last year, Kane County Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny lost to D.J. Tegeler by seven votes in a March Republican primary race. Tegeler ran unopposed in the general election in November.

14 percent of registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election West Aurora referendum passes, despite several failing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Only 13.62 percent of those eligible to vote chose to cast ballots in Tuesday’s consolidated election.

According to unofficial results from Kane County, 31,379 out of 230,453 registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election. That number does not take in account residents voting through the Aurora Election Commission.

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said that number is not as low as it might seem, because more people are now registered to vote than they were four years ago. Still, Cunningham said he is not pleased with the voter turnout in Tuesday’s election.

“We’re not happy with that, but it’s up to people to vote or not to vote,” Cunningham said. “We have no control over that. We do whatever we can. We send them their voter cards, and we mail out an insert saying the election

is coming and who is running. We would like to have more people to vote, because the election costs the same whether we have five people vote or a million.”

While presidential and gubernatorial elections tend to bring out more voters, Cunningham said local elections have more of an impact on residents.

“They affect your property taxes, because it’s your school boards, your villages, your park districts,” he said.

“These are very important elections.”

While voters Tuesday rejected several referendums on the ballot in central Kane County, including St. Charles Park District’s $28 million referendum, residents on Tuesday night approved West Aurora School District 129’s $84.2 million building bond referendum.

According to unofficial results, 3,695 residents voted yes, while 2,505 residents voted no.

“It reassured us that these

proposed projects are what the public needs and what they wanted,” Tony Martinez, director of community affairs for the West Aurora School District, said in talking about the vote.

The proposed list of projects includes constructing a four-classroom addition at Fearn Elementary School in North Aurora in order to eliminate two mobile classrooms at the school. The estimated cost of the addition is $1.4 million.

In addition, the referendum would help pay for installing air-conditioning throughout Schneider Elementary and Goodwin Elementary school’s in North Aurora, and a portion of West Aurora High School in Aurora.

West Aurora officials have said the referendum will not raise the debt portion of the tax bill. The other part of the tax bill goes to fund the district’s operating budget, which has the potential to increase yearly by inflation.

ST. CHARLES – Another local business was contacted by someone claiming to be with the city of St. Charles Electric Utility, St. Charles police announced in a Wednesday news release.

A business owner reporting receiving a call from the city’s Electric Utility with a claim that the owner’s electric bill was overdue, the release states. The male subject who called the business owner used the name “Bob” and said he would shut off the owner’s power in 30 minutes, according to the release.

The business owner questioned Bob extensively, until Bob disconnected the call, the release states. Because of the owner questioning the unknown caller, there was no request for a form of payment during the call.

The owner called the city of St. Charles Utility Billing Department and was told four other businesses were contacted in a similar manner, according to the release. At this time, there has been no financial loss to any of the businesses that were contacted.

St. Charles police would like to remind its residents and business owners that the city’s Electric Utility does not contact customers over the phone to make payments, and does not utilize credit card billing by phone, the release states.

If there ever is a question as to the status of an account, customers can contact the city’s Utility Billing Department during normal business hours at 630-377-4426. A call from this number should appear as “City of St. Charles” on caller ID, according to the release.

But a notification from the North Aurora Police Department later in the afternoon indicated that residents could return to their homes. The incident had gone on for more than two hours.

Motorists previously were being urged to avoid the area on the village’s west side, and

police were blocking roads leading into Summerwind subdivision. Members of the Kane County SWAT team were on the scene, along with North Aurora police and other local departments, including Aurora police.

Saying yes to the dress After over a month’s search, I finally said yes to the dress!

My prom dress, that is.

In all honesty, finding a dress that I truly adored was a lot harder than I ever imagined. In fact, it was a lengthy process of clicking through page after page of online store catalogs, as well as going into stores to try on dresses. But, hey, I’m not going to complain a ton. It’s not like trying on dozens of gorgeous dresses is a chore; am I right, ladies?

You see, locating my dream dress took more time than I planned. There were so many beautiful styles, brands and colors that I thought were appealing. Not only that, but there were three ways to go about choosing a dress. I could’ve ordered a dress online (and risk never trying it on beforehand), shopped a department store (the safest and cheapest bet) or browsed a local boutique (the most expensive option). The decision was rough.

At first, I looked for a prom dress on extremely expensive prom websites, dreaming of what could be. If only I was willing to buy a dress without actually physically trying it on, then maybe I would’ve considered ordering a dress online.

Too bad I’m not a risk-taker.

Therefore, I resorted to looking for a dress at department stores. To my surprise, most of these stores didn’t have dresses that reflected my style. Many of the dresses were bedazzled with tacky jewels and were either strapless or one-strap dresses.

Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of extra bling, and I wanted a dress with two straps.

So, after having no luck at any department store, I assumed my only option left was to go to a local boutique.

Certainly, I believed small

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina boutiques would have aisles of dresses in every shade from peach to plum. While this may have been, what I wasn’t too pleased about was the price of the dresses at these costly shops (typically more than $300).

Feeling lost, I went to give Macy’s a try. While there, I looked around and saw one dress I sort of liked, so I decided to try it on for the heck of it.

However, as I made my way toward the dressing rooms, I found myself staring at a stunning royal blue dress that was on a manikin. I thought, “This is my dress; I found it!”

But with my terrible luck, the dress was out of my size.

Thus, I proceeded to try on the one dress that I found earlier in the store. I tried the dress on, hated it and just felt discouraged. Distraught, I was just about to head out of the dressing room and out of the store when my mom came bursting in, holding the royal blue dress that I had seen on the manikin.

And what do you know; the dress was in my size, and I loved it ever so much. Thankfully, I now have a dress for my senior prom. Next on my list: searching for the proper pair of shoes, hairstyle, nail polish color, purse and makeup. Wow. I believe I better start figuring these things out, huh?

Asteroid mining might be key to future BLOOMBERG NEWS NASA has so far identified about 12,000 space rocks orbiting in Earth’s cosmic vicinity.

A small but ambitious group of investors has a novel plan for these celestial neighbors: They hope to mine them for fun and profit.

It’s an appealing possibility, and not entirely crazy.

Asteroids are likely rich in two resources: platinum (and related metals) and water.

The metals might be worth a fortune if they could be cheaply transported home. And the water – more intriguingly – could prove instrumental in enabling spacefarers to travel long distances from Earth. It could provide fuel for spacecraft, protection from cosmic radiation

and sustenance for intrepid explorers. Fueling up in space, moreover, would drastically cut costs by reducing loads at liftoff.

One problem: All this is quite possibly illegal.

Commercial activities in the cosmos are governed by an international treaty regime, including the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which forbids claims of national sovereignty in space. While the drafters of these treaties pretty clearly envisioned the extraction and use of resources from celestial bodies, the legal status of the dredged-up loot has long been contested.

Negotiating a new international treaty would be an onerous and possibly futile undertaking. Instead, the U.S.

should collaborate with other spacefaring nations to reach an agreement on general principles for resource extraction.

A profitable space-mining venture requires a market, which won’t materialize anytime soon. Asteroids are a diverse and understudied lot that may be harder to exploit than hoped. And there’s currently no economically viable way of delivering mined products to Earth. But that’s OK. Even if these initial ventures fail, as seems likely, they could advance some important science.

Such ambitious research is likely to be a critical prerequisite to a sustained human presence in the cosmos. And that, in the end, would be far more rewarding than an asteroid’s worth of platinum.

Enthusiast carries on lost art of mapmaking Work of St. Charles resident on display at Geneva library

That trait comes in handy as she carries on the lost art of mapmaking. Those who want to know more about what she does can see a sample of her work at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St., Geneva. Her work will be on display through Friday, May 1, at the library.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Miller, who recently moved to St. Charles. She previously had lived in Geneva for eight years.

Eric Schelkopf: How long have you been a cartographer?

Jill Miller: I’ve done it going on four years. It’s actually called manuscript mapping.

It’s combining geographical integrity with images as well.

Schelkopf: How did you get into it?

Miller: I’m from the Philadelphia area, and I’m the only child of a naval aviator, and a very passionate sailor.

My whole life, I was surrounded by navigational tools and maps and barometers, and just things like that. I grew up around it, and I’ve always loved maps.

I went to two very intense workshops in Connecticut to learn how to make these maps.

Schelkopf: You must be a pretty detail-oriented person to do this.

Miller: Yes. I’m probably annoyingly so, yes.

Schelkopf: Was it hard learning how to do this?

Miller: It was exhausting. At the end of the workshops, I just felt like somebody had pulled me through the ringer.

When I went into it, I had no idea what I was getting into And even though I really love it, and I do it for hours and hours, I think you would have to be extremely detail-oriented or you would just wind up losing your mind.

Schelkopf: What have you been working on?

Miller: It’s about really collaborating with my clients.

Right now, I’m working on a map of Monticello. My client is a Jefferson enthusiast.

I’m also working on a honeymoon map for a couple who spent their honeymoon in Maui. They did a bike tour in Maui.

It’s really about what the client wants me to do. And so we collaborate, from beginning to end. It’s a process.

Schelkopf: How long does it take for you to make a map?

Miller: It takes from 200 to 300 hours, depending on the size

They’re big maps. You cannot get the detail you want without them being big. The smallest map I can do is 3 feet by 3 feet.

Schelkopf: What kind of materials do you use?

Miller: All the maps are canvas, and it’s acrylic paint and pen on canvas.

There’s a technique to it, particularly if you want the map to look old.

There’s some thinning of the paint, and a certain way to apply it, and that’s very important.

Schelkopf: What tools do you use?

Miller: For the land masses, I use a very big brush. There’s a certain way to put that paint on, and then you take it off. And then you put it on, and you take it off.

So you are putting it on, and then you are wiping it off, to get that faded, old map look.

The script is all hand done with pen. And for the smaller details, I have a paint brush that has two hairs on it.

The owner of Edward Jones in St. Charles called me the other week and asked me to paint a map on an Adirondack chair for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership “Chair-ity” event

this summer.

So, I painted a map of St. Charles on the Adirondack chair. That’s a new one for me, but it’s kind of fun. It’s in the middle of being done.

Schelkopf: So, would you say this is a lost art?

Miller: Yes, it is definitely a lost art. I only know of two other people in the United States who do maps. It’s kind of an obscure art.

I don’t know why, but the artistry of it is kind of going away. I don’t know if that’s because of Google Maps and Bing and all of that.

La Merika offers value wine with complexity The search for an affordable, everyday wine of quality can be daunting.

But, La Merika, named after a bright star that the first explorers used for navigation, attempts to end the hunt for a value wine with four offerings from California’s central coast. Each wine checks in at less than $15, is widely available and offers more complexity than a simple, cookie-cutter value wine.

Also, as spring arrives, it’s time for Wine Lover’s Weekend in Galena. For warm spring days, a crisp, fresh rosé is reviewed and for those nights where winter’s chill makes an unwelcome return, an affordable port.

Winemaker spotlight The ability to make decisions in the vineyard is imperative to La Merika winemaker James Ewart.

“We grow a good portion of the grapes that go into these wines, so we have control from grape to bottle,” Ewart said.

“We also have a number of varieties that we can blend with to enhance the primary varietal’s aromas and flavors.”

The La Merika Central Coast Pinot Noir 2013 ($14.99) has a suggestive nose with a hint of conifer. It’s not just a fruit bomb, which can normally be expected at such a price point. There’s black cherry and black tea flavors on a medium bodied wine. The alcohol is only 13.5 percent, which makes it a very food-friendly wine.

A blind tasting determines the final blend.

“We source from a number of different blocks, which, within these, there are a number of different clones, each adding subtle nuances to the final blend,” Ewart said. “Being that we source from a number of blocks, we have a lot of opportunity to pick and choose the best blend and be consistent from vintage to vintage. As for tasting the blends blindly, with our experience of working with pinot noir from Monterey, we have a fairly good understanding of how wines evolve and so we feel this is not a huge challenge.”

Similarly, the La Merika Monterey Pinot Grigio 2012 ($12.99) is a very food-friendly wine. It’s a spring and summertime porch-sipping wine. It’s fresh and crisp. The coolness of Monterey allows for long hang times and ripe flavors of peach, pear, nectarine and apricot. But the bigger flavors are balanced out by a crisp acidity.

“We feel our San Bernabe Vineyards is a special place for growing pinot grigio,” Ewart said. “We get some warm days, but each night cools down well, preserving the natural acidity. We definitely pick on the riper side, 23 Brix,

when we start to taste ripe nectarine characters in the juice. We also blend in a touch of chardonnay to add a little richness to the mid palate.”

A combined fermentation of stainless steel and French and American oak provide the La Merika Central Coast Chardonnay 2013 ($12.99) with a fuller mouth feel despite having an abundance of citrus and apple flavors. With the velvety texture of a merlot, the La Merika Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 ($14.99) is a go-to wine for pizza and pasta. The soft tannins yield to flavors of plum, potpourri and semi-sweet dark chocolate morsels.

What to buy Cockburn’s, Special Reserve Port ($19) Founded in 1815 by Robert and John Cockburn, the winery is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. Today, it is owned by the Symington family, the largest landowners in the Douro Valley. There are juicy plum, raisin and raspberry compote flavors in a blend from Cockburn’s Douro Superior vineyards. After five years in oak casks and bottle, it’s ready to drink and a great introduction to port.

Laughs aplenty in ‘Unnecessary Farce’

CHARLES – “Unnecessary Farce,” now staged by Fox Valley Repertory at Pheasant Run Resort, has all the trappings typically associated with the genre, including a lot of door slamming, frenzied chase scenes, sexual innuendo, identity confusion, a rapid-fire deluge of ribald jokes and a preposterously zig-zagging storyline.

But unlike many farces, this show, which premiered in 2006, is genuinely funny. It has many a witty turn of phrase by actor-playwright Paul Slade Smith and a disciplined seven-member cast who, directed

by Ronan Mara, gets the comedic timing right. In combination, these assets provide a surefire ignition for some explosive laughter.

Here’s the setup: The action takes place in an unidentified city in two adjoining rooms at a no-frills motel; both rooms have interconnecting doors. One is occupied by two slipshod undercover cops (even though one, a new recruit, happens to be in full uniform) who are on a stakeout.

The police have the second room under surveillance in hopes that their videotapes will capture enough evidence to lead to an arrest of Mayor Meekly (Jim Heatherly) who is suspected of embezzling millions from city coffers and who has arranged to meet there with the newly hired municipal accountant. Unbeknownst to the him, the accountant is secretly helping in the sting operation.

But plans don’t go smoothly – and that’s an understatement.

Before long Eric’s cover is nearly blown, first when the hapless mayor arrives unexpectedly early for his meeting with Ms. Brown and later when Agent Frank (Joe McCauley), part of the mayor’s security detail, shows up to inspect the room only to find Eric tucked in the closet.

As things progress, Eric, his partner Billie (Vered Hankin) and the accountant all find themselves trying to escape from the clutches of the excitable kilt-wearing Todd the Highland Hit Man (John Wehrman), a member of a notorious Scottish clan. Todd’s already-heavy brogue becomes all-but-incomprehensible – and increasingly hilarious – whenever he gets angry.

Ann Keen rounds out the cast as Mary Meekly, the mayor’s wife and a woman with a secret.

East wins behind Vyzral’s gem

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – For the second day in a row, the Batavia baseball team found itself on the wrong end of a pitching duel.

The Bulldogs lost their fifth straight game Wednesday afternoon, 3-1, to St. Charles East in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

Mick Vyzral threw a complete game for the Saints (4-2, 2-0 UEC River), yielding four hits and one earned run while striking out eight.

With East fresh off shutting out the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-2) in Tuesday’s series opener, Vyzral came one strike away from doing the same Wednesday.

“He attacked the strike zone, had three pitches to throw for strikes and he didn’t mess around,” Saints coach Len Asquini said. “All business. It was great to see, and it’s great for us to do that two days in a row. It was something that we talked about last week in our first week out here; we didn’t think our pitchers attacked the zone well enough. And I thought so far, our three pitchers that have thrown this week definitely did.”

Working with a fastball, cut fastball and curveball on a cold day ideal for pitching, Vyzral mixed speeds and located his pitches effectively to get outs, retiring the side in four batters or less in every inning except the seventh.

“I just wanted to attack the zone, change speeds a lot and get them off balance,” Vyzral said. “I just wanted to throw [the cutter] on the outer half. They were trying to pull the ball when they got up in the box, so I kept changing speeds the whole game.”

Vyzral had a perfect game going into the fourth, retiring the first 10 batters he saw before hitting Bulldogs second baseman Pat Greco with a pitch with one out.

The senior gave up his bid for a no-hitter in the fifth when Luke Beckmann reached base on an infield single, but carried the shutout into the seventh inning.

Senior Mitch Boyer singled with one out in the bottom of the inning before Beckmann reached on another infield single.

Ben Lynam ripped a two-out, 1-2 pitch into left field, scoring Boyer and leaving Batavia with the winning run stepping to the plate.

But Vyzral gathered himself after a conference on the mound and was able to get Eric Huizinga to ground out to end the game.

“I was,” Vyzral said when asked if he still felt confident in completing the game after giving up the run. “[Asquini] had confidence in me, and he just wanted me to throw my best pitch at the end there and I did. I threw a curveball that was working the whole game for me.”

Struggling offensively, Batavia tried to play small ball in the bottom of the fourth inning after Vyzral retired the first nine hitters he faced, striking out the side in the bottom of the third.

But that strategy didn’t work, either, when Vyzral collected Jimmy Roach’s bunt and threw him out.

“It’s hard enough for us to generate offense right now,” Bulldogs coach Matt Holm said. “[Vyzral] pitched a [heck] of a game out there. Obviously, we had a little bit of a difficult day at the plate, to say the least. We tried to do some other things, putting the ball down, but even then he was pitching in a position where guys couldn’t get the ball down the way we wanted them to for base hits. We tried to get something on the line, maybe make him make a play, but even at the end we’re still scratching for something and in a position where we had to do some damage.”

Huzizinga took the loss for the Bulldogs, going five innings and giving up

three runs on seven hits.

East opened the scoring in the first inning when first baseman Jake Asquini singled with one out and came around to score on an RBI single from Austin Gift.

Saints catcher Anthony Aducci went 3 for 5, stealing a base and scoring on an overthrow in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.

Reid Olson doubled and scored in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 3-0 and giving Vyzral plenty of padding.

The Saints left eight men on base, something Len Asquini hoped they’ll clear up moving forward, beginning with today’s scheduled series finale in St. Charles.

“I thought that was one thing we didn’t do super well, offensively, was attack and take advantage of some of those situations,” Asquini said. “We should have had a couple more runs, but we did enough today. Defense was solid, Mick pitched very well and we did what we needed to do offensively.”

Hahn said he was thrilled with Reed’s first outing of the year. Reed was slated to pitch the second game of the squad’s Kentucky spring break trip, which was shortened to one game because of inclement weather.

ST. CHARLES – Geneva’s Brett Reed and St. Charles North’s Tyler Mettetal both pitched complete games and performed at the plate, as well, during Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division baseball game.

In the end, Mettetal, a North sophomore, helped earn the victory for himself, getting an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning during a 2-1, walk-off North Stars victory that kept the team unbeaten.

“I was just looking to put the ball in play and move the runners,” Mettetal said of his oneout ground ball to deep shortstop that Geneva’s Jack Wassel made a nice play on to keep the ball on the infield. “Especially with two strikes, I was just looking to put it in play somewhere.”

After Mettetal’s infield hit, Geneva pulled the infield in to try to cut down the winning run at the plate. Wassel fielded a ground ball to his left off the bat of Mettetal’s twin brother, Zach. Wassel looked home, but then turned to second. With no one covering the bag, he instinctively threw to first to get an out but allowed the winning run to score.

“It was a miscommunication,” Vikings coach Matt Hahn said. “We had talked about coming home, but he thought we were doing something else.”

Kyle Novotney triggered the game-winning rally with a oneout single to right. After he stole second on the first pitch, Reed hit John LeGare with a pitch.

Tyler Mettetal’s infield single then set the stage for his brother Zach’s at-bat.

“It was tough elements today,” North Stars coach Todd Genke said of the weather, which turned windy and dropped temperatures into the lower 40s by game’s end. “I am just happy we found a way to win a baseball game.”

Team grateful for Grudzielanek’s grit

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com At 44, Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek still looks lithe and wears uniform socks with his nickname scrawled on the toes.

Nearly five years after retiring from a 15-season Major League career, “Grudz” is eagerly transitioning into his first manageriMark al job.

Grudzielanek That relative proximity to his playing days isn’t lost on players, however.

“He was in the league for awhile and had a lot of experience,” outfielder Colin Bray said. “So just having a manager for a guy who played in the big leagues for a long period of time is very helpful for us and for all these guys, you know.

“We want to get to a place that he got to, you know, so it’s definitely a plus having a manager that has been through it all and can really help us out.

So that’s very exciting, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Grudzielanek, a middle infielder whose career included 197 games at second base for the Cubs from 2003 to 2004, retired after spending part of the 2010 season with the Cleveland Indians.

Admittedly seeking a respite from baseball to spend more time with family, he just as actively pursued a way back into the game in recent months.

It didn’t hurt that baseball’s annual winter meetings were in his hometown of San Diego in 2014.

In the weeks since, Grudzielanek has re-embraced the minor league grind while rekindling his knowledge of the Midwest League. It’s a far different climate compared to his days with the now-defunct Rockford Expos in 1992, but naturally, the new experience lends plenty of perspective.

“To think that I was on the flip side of that is really … mind-boggling,” Grudzielanek said. “Because it’s like, ‘God, they thought of me like that

Noses can run for several different reasons Dear Doctor K: Why does my nose run in cold weather? Does it mean I’m getting a cold?

Dear Reader: Cold air is not only cold, but also dry. The lungs are built to deal with air that is warm and moist. So, a main function of your nose is to make the air you breathe in warm and moist. Bones in the nose (called turbinates) are covered with blood-filled membranes. The blood running through the turbinates is at body temperature: around 98.7 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat in the blood warms the cold air you breathe in.

The nose moistens cold, dry air by having its inner lining make watery mucus. It’s like a mini-steam bath with moisture dripping down the walls. The colder and drier the air, the more water and mucus need to be produced. This means more sniffles and drips.

Taking a warm shower or bath can help clear your sinuses and actually slow down your runny nose. You’re basically allowing the membranes to stop secreting mucus because the air you’re taking in now is already moist and warm. So a runny nose in winter

Now to a question you didn’t ask: Why does your nose run when you have a cold? It runs for an entirely different reason. As the mucus leaves your nose, it takes the germs that are causing the cold out with it. It’s one of your body’s defenses against infection.

And another question: Why does your nose run when you have allergies? The reason is similar to why your nose runs when you have a cold. Your nose is trying to eliminate, to wash away, the substance causing the allergic reaction. That might be ragweed, dust, hair and dander from a cat, or many other allergens.

The watery mucus that comes out of your nose when you breathe cold air is clear. In contrast, mucus from a runny nose caused by an infection may become colored and opaque. That’s

because the immune system cells that are fighting the infection get into the mucus. When you have such an infection, you can help your nose drain by taking hot baths or showers.

If you have nasal congestion from a cold or allergies, you want your nose to run and open the nasal passages. Spicy foods might help. This time, the chemical capsaicin, which is found in many spicy foods, is what does the trick.

It causes the sinuses to open up, sending out mucus.

In fact, capsaicin is such a sinus-clearer that scientists have studied whether taking it as a capsule or spraying it in the nose would relieve sinus congestion.

The results have been disappointing. But eating a warming bowl of spicy curry is a different story.

It may clear things out for a little while – and give you something pleasant to take your mind off your cold.

Please fill me in and tell me the whole truth about it. – Nameless, Goshen, Indiana Dear Nameless: Ecstasy has been around for over 100 years. It was originally developed in Germany as an appetite suppressant. In the 1970s, it had limited use in psychotherapy, but is now classified as a drug with no accepted medical use.

Ecstasy has been illegal since the 1980s, shortly after it began showing up in the nightclub scene and became popular among young people attending dance parties, or “raves.” You might say ecstasy was the new LSD. Chemically, it has structural similarities to methamphetamine, a stimulant, and mescaline, a hallucinogen.

It usually comes in tablet form and is taken orally. It’s also sometimes found as a powder and can be snorted or smoked. Users say it produces a feeling of profound well-being; it also suppresses the need to eat, drink or sleep, enabling users to party at a marathon pace. While it is less addictive than heroin or cocaine, it causes problems. Shortterm effects include nausea, tremors, muscle cramps, faintness and blurred vision; among the drug’s after-effects are paranoia and depression. Long-term use is just beginning to be studied, but may include brain damage.

An overdose of ecstasy can cause panic attacks, loss of

Nevertheless, the drug is still slowly growing in popularity.

That is a good guideline. Today, we have two problems that do not have a common denominator.

First, look at the South hand. West opens three clubs, showing a good seven-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points; North makes a takeout double; and East passes.

What should South bid?

This is a situation so many inexperienced players get wrong.

They bid three spades, regardless of point-count. Yes, it is true that North, when entering the auction over an opponent’s pre-emptive opening bid, will assume that South has six or seven points – but he has noticeably more than that.

South must jump to four spades.

That is passed out. How should the defenders play to defeat the contract?

If West leads the club king, declarer wins in the dummy, draws trumps, ruffs his last club in the dummy, and runs the diamonds for an overtrick. But if West leads his singleton heart, East wins the first trick with his heart jack, then cashes the heart ace and king.

What should West discard?

West should throw the diamond nine followed by the diamond two: high-low with a doubleton, asking for a diamond shift.

Then, when East leads a diamond at trick four, West ruffs to defeat the contract.

Andy Robson, an English expert, pointed out that if a pre-emptive opener leads a side suit, that will be a singleton. If instead he leads his own suit, play him for a singleton in your trump suit.

• Metal-framed mirrors, such as Wisteria’s silver-painted-finish Magnolia Mirror, are one of Peake’s top picks for giving a room some shimmer and shine ($299, www. wisteria.com). For other easy accents, Peake recommends metallic drapery rods, drum tables and art.

• Another bright idea from Peake: Use a modern metal shade, such as the hand-finished Metal Drum Lampshade from Shades of Light in pewter, gold or black, to refresh a lamp ($89, www.shadesoflight.com). “It’s cool to use a

different type of lampshade than fabric or linen,” she says.

• Why shouldn’t plants get the golden touch? Use one of West Elm’s four-inch Metallic Planters to add sparkle to any tabletop or bookshelf vignette ($12, available soon, www.westelm.com). Or, for a more glamorous statement, line a few up in a row.

• Peake loves how nailhead trim gives textiles and furniture a layer of understated metallic detail. See: the Lissa Nailhead Chest, made of hardwood and canvas and accented with solid brass nailheads ($3,399, www.horchow.com).

• “Sometimes gold can come across as pretentious and stuffy,” Kennedy says.

So stay away from the big, gold statements and go for softer, smaller items, such as glassware and textiles; Peake is partial to drapery with nailhead trim, for example.

Pillows are another good

choice. Room & Board’s Shimmer Pillows come in a subtle gold, taupe, copper or silver ($99, www.roomandboard.com).

• Both Kennedy and Peake recommend mixing metals but caution that it may take some trial and error to get it right. One good rule of thumb, Kennedy says, is to use only one of each – copper, platinum, etc. – “depending on the size and scale of the pieces,” she says. A set of Fleet Brushed Nickel Chairs from CB2 around a dining table, for example, would be fabulous but might preclude using nickel elsewhere in the room ($179, www.cb2.com).

• The mix of materials in Serena & Lily’s Metallic Suede & Hemp Rug – natural hemp keeps it relaxed, sueded silver leather makes it special – epitomizes the kind of understated, sumptuous look that Kennedy says is in vogue ($195-$1,150, www. serenaandlily.com).
