Geneva’s Horn Steel marks 118 years

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A look around the area – particularly in Geneva – will reveal many different works of wrought iron and steel.

In Geneva, there’s the railings at Graham’s Chocolates and at the Herrington Inn and Spa, the spiral staircase at Sunshine Dental and Wessel Court Apartments and the building addition at Johnson Control.

Even the three-tree design welcoming visitors to Geneva was made by Horn Steel.

There are the railings and ramps at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, the pointed top of the tower at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles and the Cal-Sag Channel, where it keeps out the Asian carp.

That and more came from the workmanship and dedication of employees at Horn Steel, located at 1101 Commerce Drive, Geneva. The company will mark its 118th

year in business on Sunday.

Betty Horn, the widow of William C. Horn, whose grandfather founded the company in 1896, presented a program on the history of the steel maker, still in business, at the Geneva History Museum on Tuesday, as part of its Brown Bag Lunch Series.

After her husband’s death, Horn, now 86, and her son Rob have become stewards of the company, with a grandson, John Bolla, now representing the fifth generation in the steel-making business.

The company started out in Chicago, founded by Wil-

liam Horn, Betty Horn said.

“The structural ironworks company provided steel for residential, industrial and commercial use,” Horn said.

“Its steel was used to support water towers that were placed on many roofs.”

So plentiful was its steel product that in January 1958, Edwin Horn’s son was on his way to work in Chicago and saw workmen demolishing an old building and “wrote this letter to his dad, telling him of seeing ‘William Horn Ironworks’ on a beam facing Wacker Drive,” Horn said.

plant and much of the equipment, she said, but they rebuilt, and business resumed until the Great Depression.

“There was no new construction, and men were laid off. The company survived despite the economy,” she said.

“It was a sad day. He had no choice but to let most of the men go. The company survived those lean years.”

The family moved to Geneva in 1937 and built a new shop on River Lane in Geneva. It relocated to Commerce Drive in 1981, Horn said.

“The longevity of the company has to do with the leadership model – how we deal with the employees who are very skilled and loyal – and we show our appreciation,” Horn said.

Party in the Park set for May 31 in Batavia

The event was started in 2011 after Marmion Academy student Ben Wilkinson, 17, of Batavia, committed suicide.

The fundraiser will support

Breaking the Silence, a student-led organization helping teens and young adults become mentally and physically healthy.

“It’s a party to celebrate life and friendship and spread awareness about the stigma of mental illness,” said Mary Wolff, in addressing aldermen Monday at a Batavia City Council meeting. Wolff is one

of the organizers of the event and is the daughter of Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff.

Party in the Park will be held May 31 at the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and North Island Avenue. The event will feature a 5K run/ walk and a concert.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke recognized the importance

of the event.

“I think it has a lot of meaning to a lot of people in Batavia,” Schielke said in addressing Mary Wolff.

“California cabernet being absolutely number one. It’s the wine I carry the most of, the wine I sell the most of,” Czubak said. “The most expensive wines on our list are between $400 and $600 a bottle. And those are Bordeaux [wines] from ... France.

And those are some very nice wines. I am lucky enough to have tasted a couple of them, and they are excellent.”

Czubak has been the sommelier at the Herrington for about three years. In addition to helping diners choose a particular wine, he is also

responsible for making sure the restaurant is fully stocked with all the wines it’s supposed to have.

He said he has taken some formal classes, but a lot of his expertise is just being exposed to a lot of different types of wine.

“You have to go to a lot of wine tastings. That’s really the only way to do it – you have to taste lots of wine. You have to keep exposing yourself to it and keep learning,” Czubak said. “I was always into food and wine. I did not necessarily see it as a career path. It was just kind of one of those things.”

Not every restaurant has or needs a wine steward, but restaurants that feature fine dining often do, he said.

“I’ve built the wine list kind of to have a little bit of something for everybody ... [from] all over the world, all sorts of varietals, all sorts of countries, all sorts of wine-growing regions,” Czubak said. “We’re a place that really tries to have people have a wonderful, special evening. I want people to always feel like they’re splurging a little, and they’re having something fun, something they enjoy.”

Czubak also must keep the

restaurant’s food menu in mind.

“Wine is inherently very good with food,” he said. “It’s why wine is so popular worldwide. If you’re going to drink wine, you might as well make something that complements your meal. And vice versa, have something that complements your wine. We do a lot of wine dinners here.”

What is a wine dinner?

“A wine dinner is where we pick the wine first, and then we sit down and we create a menu with our executive chef and our sous-chef ... specifically for those wines,” he said. “Whereas, on a normal evening, I’m helping someone pick a wine to go with what they’re eating.”

ENEVA – When diners at the Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva have a question about what wine to order, they talk to Mark Czubak, a sommelier.

A sommelier is a wine steward with expertise in wine and in pairing wine with food – and food with wine. The Herrington has about 350 different wines and about 3,200 bottles stored in various wine cellars.

As he opened a locked cellar that holds about 600 bottles of red wine, Czubak said it was the functional inventory for dinner. White wines are stored separately, for no other reason than the historic building was not originally built for it, he said.

Domestic wines, as well as those from all over the world – Spain, Italy, France – make up several pages of the wine list for Atwater’s Restaurant inside the Herrington.

“Some people want to choose on their own; some people want a suggestion,” Czubak said. “Some people want to try something new and different. That is the job.

You want to go in there, and you’re trying to figure out what they want, what they are looking for, what their price range is, what their palate is, what their likes and dislikes are. And you try to figure out what they want to drink.”

Good’s group will perform at 11 a.m., in a highlight promoted as the “Kaneland Alumnus Spotlight.” He said he wanted to be in last year’s event, but all the spots were filled by the time he sought to join.

The festival’s executive director, Maria Dripps-Paulson, said she “automatically” put him on the list for this year. Good will perform with fellow North Central College student Michael Lockler, a guitarist, and Daniel Lopatka, a bass player. Good plays the drums.

Good said his group will perform jazz standards during its 45-minute set.

Dripps-Paulson said it is ideal for Kaneland graduates to return for the festival.

“People can look up to them as careers they can aspire to, or have a sense of pride for Kaneland,” she said. “We do like to showcase Kaneland alumni.”

Good said he hopes to have a career in music, saying he hopes to be “playing with a band like this … and teaching private lessons, that sort of thing. I’m hoping eventually to make music the only thing I have to do as a job.”

The festival features free admission and will include several attractions at different locations at the school.

Also, artwork from students at all grade levels in the Kaneland School District will be displayed.

It will be the first festival to be staged under the new Kaneland Arts Initiative.

Dripps-Paulson said visitors probably won’t notice any visible changes because of that, but “they’ll probably see that it’s a new name.”

There will be a note about it in the program. She said the event continues to grow and is now, “outside of graduation, the biggest event, attendance-wise, for the school district.”

One highlight, she said, will be Jay Ryan, a print maker who has created album artwork for musician Andrew Bird. She also highlighted The CAKE Village, which will bring African culture with dancers and drummers.

“There’s something for everyone,” Dripps-Paulson said. “It’s nice that it’s kind of an intergenerational event. … Kids can invite their grandparents.”

The Kane County Board on Tuesday voted 17-5 to award 5 percent raises to Brad Sauer, emergency communications; Mark VanKerkhoff, development and community services; Scott Berger, community reinvestment; Roger Fahnestock, chief information officer; Barb Jeffers, public health; Donald Bryant, emergency manage-

ment; Mark Armstrong, assessments; Sheila McCraven, human resources; and Joe Onzick, finance.

Board members Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, and Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, were absent.

According to information provided by Chairman Chris Lauzen, the increases themselves will cost almost $50,000. The total cost, however, is closer to $60,000 when including FICA and Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund costs.

will better align the directors’ compensation with their counterparts in other nearby counties. He noted the directors had a pay freeze for four years before getting a 2 percent increase last year.

The volunteers – some of whom since have adopted the rescued animals, given them medical care and welcomed them on their property – received a standing ovation for their efforts at the County Board meeting Tuesday.

“What you see behind me is a representation of people who gave of their generosity and time,” said Barb Jeffers, Kane County Health Department executive director.

Dozens of people responded to Kane County Animal Control’s call for help on March 11, when the animals – including llamas, horses, chickens, goats and donkeys – were moved from a farm in rural Hampshire Township to an undisclosed location near Maple Park.

It followed the March 5 arrest of the petting zoo’s owner, Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, on one count of cruelty to animals and one count of a violation of an owner’s duty to provide adequate food, shelter and water and vet care to prevent suffering, both misdemeanors.

Jeffers said the volunteers – who showed up with such equipment as trucks and hitches – “helped us put the animals in a better place.”

The volunteers cheered and clapped when Animal Control Administrator Robert Sauceda said the animals have been forfeited from Fiebelkorn’s care. She missed a Friday deadline to put up $30,000 as required for the care of her impounded animals.

All but seven of the animals have been adopted, Sauceda said, adding Animal Control is working to find homes for the others.

Kenyon, R-South Elgin, recently was named a Prairie Farmer Master Farmer.

Family displaced by fire STC fire chief says attic fan problem likely started blaze

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Members of a St. Charles family are staying with relatives after a Monday night fire damaged their home, St. Charles Fire Chief Joel Schelstreet said.

The family’s house, on the 1700 block of South Fourth Place, is not habitable because of damage sustained in the fire. The St. Charles Fire Department responded to the fire at 7:19 p.m. Monday, Schelstreet said.

The one-story, single-family home has an estimated

$10,000 worth of smoke and water damage to the structure and the contents of the attic.

Firefighters on Monday found flames coming from the roof of the home.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze about 15 minutes after their 7:21 p.m. arrival, according to a news release.

“Obviously, the water is going to drain down ... so there’s some that got into a hallway area,” Schelstreet said Tuesday.

There was no one home at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured, according to the release. The family came home just before the fire department got there, Schelstreet said.

The fire was discovered by multiple neighbors, who called 911, Schelstreet said.

Batavia seeking grant for study of city signs

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City officials are seeking a $40,000 Kane County riverboat grant to help pay for a study on improving signage throughout the Batavia community.

Aldermen on Monday approved applying for the grant, which is funded by revenues from the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin. The county uses these funds for projects related to education, environment or economic development.

City staff had investigated possible projects that could be funded through the grant program and determined that the best option would be to apply for funds for the signage study. The city already has

budgeted $20,000 for the study.

“We feel to get a high-quality study, we should apply for a riverboat grant to supplement the funds budgeted thus far,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said in a memo to Batavia aldermen.

The study would look at such things as how to improve directional signage within the city as well as improving signage in the city’s downtown.

Buening noted that another community in Illinois did a similar study, and that most of the requests for proposals were between $50,000 to $60,000.

The study costs do not include funding for construction or installation of the signs, Buening said.

Students to help out Saturday in 1st Waubonsee Day of Service College’s students help organize new volunteer effort

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – More than 100 Waubonsee Community College students will go out to local communities and volunteer Saturday for projects in the Kaneland and Aurora areas as part of the college’s first WCC Day of Service.

The event, which was organized through the college’s Student Life office, was initiated by local students.

Projects include cleaning up twigs, branches and garbage at Elburn Lions Park; cleaning the grounds at Waubonsee Community College; and cleaning Gilman Trail from Galena Boulevard to the college.

Student Life manager Mary Tosch said in an email that student trustee Mekenah Merrill and the Illinois

Community College Board student representatives presented the idea to host a day of service during the spring semester.

Tosch’s office oversees all student organizations, including leadership development and civic engagement among students.

“Together, we created a flier that was posted on campus,” Tosch said in an email.

“We also entered the event on our college-wide calendar, had a table in the student center to get students interested, emailed all employees about this event and did presentations to groups.”

Projects were selected through brainstorming and by contacting agencies to see if they needed help on that day, she said.

“Due to the response from the students, we had to add two projects to our list,” Tosch said in an email.

“Many institutions of higher education participate in volunteer days or community service events, so the idea ... fits with our office’s goal of civic engagement.”

The goal is not only to provide service to those who need it, she said, but to give students an opportunity to give back to their community “and begin to plant the seeds of lifelong volunteering,” Tosch said.

“Many students have already volunteered in their community while attending high school, but were unsure how to do so now as a college student,” she said. “The Student Life Office gets frequent requests from community agencies for volunteers and maintains a list of opportunities for students.”

While various groups at Waubonsee do volunteer at local agencies, Tosch said those opportunities generally are limited to those particular groups. This upcoming event was open to all students, faculty and staff.

“This is a pilot program, and we are hopeful to be able to offer something like this again in the future,” Tosch said. “We will do an evaluation after this event to gather feedback from the participants and the service sites.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Creating opportunities To the Editor: We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters group for its exceptional support of our music and drama programs.

In the course of this school year, these volunteer parent advocates have donated hundreds of hours and contributed thousands of dollars to help us create great opportunities for our students.

On March 8, Kaneland High School hosted the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest at the beautiful Kaneland Harter Middle School facility. The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters volunteer brigade of well over 100 parents and students helped set up the event; ran concessions for over 800 participants and their families; fed our judges and directors from 16 schools; monitored performance rooms and ran adjudication sheets; helped guide the many guests through the school; and then cleaned up afterward.

On March 2, this same group of wonderful parents organized a performance and fundraising event, the “Knight of Performances,”

at Harter Middle School. Student performances, beautiful raffle prizes and delicious food resulted in a fabulous community event, thanks to their leadership, vision and hard work.

In addition to these events, our boosters supplied meals and volunteers for the inaugural KHMS/KHS Choral Festival, purchased tickets for our ensembles to perform the national anthem at sporting events, and financially supported the KHMS Jazz Band appearance at the IMEA All-State music conference. The boosters sponsor and work concessions for the fall play and spring musical, donating profits back to the program, and also provide volunteers for summer band camps.

We are very fortunate to have such capable, selfless and passionate advocates for performing arts education in our community, and we are grateful for their support!

Obamacare should start cutting off drug coupons BLOOMBERG NEWS Even for people who have health insurance, brandname prescription drugs can be expensive. If the companies that sell those drugs want to give some patients a little help covering the cost, well, what could be the harm in that?

A lot, it turns out. Welcome to the shadowy world of health care financing, where the battle between drugmakers and insurers is fought with coupons – and where the Affordable Care Act might give insurers, and by extension the rest of us, the upper hand.

Unlike coupons for, say, breakfast cereal, coupons for pricey drugs are a bit of

a racket. It works like this – your doctor says you need a drug to, say, treat your depression. Perhaps you’ve heard about a particular brand-name antidepressant and ask for it; your doctor says a generic version has just been approved but agrees to prescribe the brand you want.

Your doctor, however, isn’t paying the cost of the drug; your insurance company is.

Insurers could simply refuse to cover brand-name drugs, but then who would buy their policies? Instead, companies discourage higher-priced medicines by charging you a higher copayment. Drugmakers know this, and they offer some patients coupons to offset that copayment. You stick

with the brand-name drug; the drugmaker gets more revenue; and your insurance company is hit with a much higher cost.

Those costs add up.

Coupons will increase U.S. pharmaceutical spending by as much as $32 billion from 2012 to 2021, according to a study paid for by pharmacy benefit managers, who help insurers manage drug costs.

That extra spending is passed on to consumers in higher premiums. What looks like a freebie ends up being anything but.

Enter Obamacare. Medicare and Medicaid don’t allow coupon programs, calling them kickbacks by drugmakers; until last fall, it looked as though the government might

impose the same prohibition on insurance bought on the new state exchanges. Then Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the kickback rule didn’t apply; drugmakers say they’re waiting for a final verdict.

For a law with the phrase “affordable care” in its title, failing to block coupon programs would be a missed opportunity. In the meantime, states can help.

Massachusetts banned those programs in 1988, and the state has one of the country’s lowest levels of spending on prescription drugs as a share of total health care costs.

None of this should detract from doing what’s right for the patient. Since 2012, Mas-

sachusetts has allowed drugmakers to offer copayment assistance for treatments where no generic is available.

Applying that compromise to Obamacare could address a situation that Bloomberg News reported on last month, in which some drugmakers, worried about running afoul of federal rules, have ended assistance for people on exchange-based plans, even for drugs that have no generic alternative.

The United States continues to spend 50 percent more than any other developed country on health care, and there aren’t many easy ways to close that gap. Blocking drug coupons when generics are available is one strategy that could help.

GENEVA – Before the late Geneva alderman Ralph Dantino served the city’s 5th Ward, he was a founding member of the Geneva Park District Foundation.

Organized in 1994, the tax-deductible charity’s purpose was to raise money for projects not in the district’s budget, former park district director Steve Persinger said.

Because of his dedication to the park district, it is fitting that a teaching dock, on Peck Lake at Peck Farm Park, be named for Dantino, Persinger said.

“It is really appropriate,” Persinger said. “He was passionate about what went on at Peck Farm Park and very involved. “ The Geneva Park District will unveil the new Ralph Dantino Teaching Dock at a dedication ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Peck Farm Park manager Trish Burns said the teaching dock – really a pier because no boats can be tied to it – is part of a new nature playground that was already built.

The new dock provides easy access and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility to the water’s edge.

“It’s 3 feet long and allows teachers and kids to get down into the water,” Burns said.

“They can test the water pH, see the types of animals that live there, including insects.”

Dantino played pivotal

“He was on the foundation for 15 years, and that is a long time,” Persinger said.

“He was passionate the whole time he was on there. He was involved in all the projects.

Geneva Dantino alderman died in February 2013 after a four-year battle with cancer.

In a prepared statement, Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said the dedication is “with mixed emotions that we pay tribute to such a great advocate for the community, and specifically for the Geneva Park District.”

Lambillotte said the dedication will allow Dantino’s legacy to continue through future generations.

After the dedication ceremony, attendees are encouraged to stay for the annual Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Highlights will include free bicycle tuneups, food from local vendors, rain barrels and compost bins for sale, information from vendors supplying green-friendly products, free chair massages and health scans, chalk art and children’s entertainment.

AURORA – The West Aurora School Board on Monday approved the appointments of two new assistant superintendents.

The two will report to incoming West Aurora School Superintendent Jeffrey Craig and replace three assistant superintendents who are retiring or leaving the district at the end of the school year.

Brent Raby will be the new assistant superintendent for teaching and learning. He will have responsibility over English language learning, assessment and data analysis, elementary and secondary teaching and learning, nontraditional programs/ resources, and special education, according to a news release from the West Aurora School District.

Angela Smith will be the new assistant superintendent of operations. She will have responsibility over operations, finance, student services, technology, human resources and transportation.

Smith resigned in March from the West Aurora School Board after being a board member for seven years.

Raby is currently the director of curriculum and instruction at McHenry Community High School District 156. In addition, he serves on the boards of the Illinois Association of Title I Directors and the McHenry County Cooperative for Employment Education.

Previously, Smith was the finance manager and then director of business services for Oswego Community Unit School District 308. Before that, she served as a vice president and trust officer for Castle Bank.

The West Aurora School Board on Monday appointed longtime community volunteer Ira Lathan to fill a seat left vacant by a recent resignation. He will serve until the April 2015 election.

Trustee Ethan Hastert, who was not at the previous meeting, said he was concerned about having such funds placed into the recreation fund when “we have other parts of the budget that are straining.”

Hastert said there was “nothing specific to spend it on” in the recreation fund.

Walter said the village wouldn’t get to any of its recreation plans if it didn’t put money toward them. He said otherwise, “this village will never move off of not having the kinds of parks and recreation that some of us envision.”

After the meeting, he said the village has a lot of open land and there isn’t enough foresight about what could be done about recreation.

Trustee Ken Anderson said he preferred to leave the budget as it was, keeping the gaming income in the recreation fund. Trustees agreed.

On the Metra fund, Elder mentioned that, even with daily parking fees set to rise to $1.50, up from $1.25, on May 1, the village’s revenues in the funds – $90,300 – would be less than its expenses – $100,499.

After the meeting, Walter said he didn’t see a reason to raise the fee. He said there would be better ways to increase revenues, such as doing away with free parking on weekends.

Trustee Jeff Walter said he voted no because of issues he had with the park fund and the Metra fund. The vote was 5-1, with Walter as the only vote against it.

Last month, Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, presented a draft budget. He said the tentative budget will be available for public inspection at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., through April 21, the date of the next Village Board meeting.

A public hearing on the budget will take place at the April 21 meeting. The final budget could be adopted at that meeting. Elder said the budget must be approved before May 1, the start of the fiscal year.

There was discussion over plans for the recreation fund, with the tentative budget showing $11,400 put into the fund from the village’s gaming income, which is collected from video gambling machines in Elburn establishments. The Village Board previously had voted not to consolidate the recreation fund into the general fund, and at the village’s last meeting, trustees directed Elder to put fees from gaming

SafeWise calculated the chance of violent crimes – which includes aggravated assault, rape, murder and robbery – and property crimes – such as arson, burglary and theft – happening out of 1,000 residents.

The No. 1 safest city – Round Lake Park – had a reported zero violent crimes per 1,000 people and 1.06 property crimes per 1,000 people. Sugar Grove’s statistics came in at 0.33 for violent crimes and 5.72 for property crimes. Elburn’s were slightly higher at 0.53 and 6.71, respectively.

Using FBI crime statistics and independent research, SafeWise ranked Sugar Grove 11th and Elburn 18th in its report titled “50 Safest Cities in Illinois.”

By KEVIN DRULEY GENEVA – Jen-Ho Tseng boasted a working resume of international baseball experience entering his professional debut Tuesday.

Sure, that amounted to one inning for Chinese Taipei in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and a stint in the Asian Championship in December, but that’s still pretty hefty considering Tseng is 19.

Cougars pitching coach David Rosario piggybacked on that point before Tseng strode to the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark mound for the club’s home opener against Fort Wayne. Rosario knew the Taiwanese right-hander was what brought some of the parent Cubs’ brass to an eventual 4-3 win in 12 innings.

“This is a kid that is coming all the way from Taiwan and high school to pitch in front of a crowd,” Rosario said. “It’s another element that they have never been at, so let’s see how they handle that.”

NOTEWORTHY Hit the road and the ball St. Charles North and Burlington Central ventured south for spring break last week, but each team’s offense did anything but.

A hot core of hitters fueled North’s 5-1 run to second place at the Aaron Schuh memorial tournament in Dyersburg, Tenn., with Nick Drawant (.467), Joe Kuczek (.467) and Jack Dennis (.400) wielding some of the hotter bats.

Playing at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Central averaged seven runs in four games. The Rockets scored less than five runs just once.

“We had one game where we ran into a good pitcher, real good pitcher, from Powell County [Ky.],” Rockets coach Kyle Nelson said, “but yeah, we hit pretty well all week.”

Pitching propels ’Dogs Batavia has derived much of its swagger from its pitching during a 4-1 start.

“Even before our first game, I knew our pitching staff was going to be one of the best in the state,” senior left-hander Jacob Piechota said. “We’re a confident pitching staff and have great pitching coach who played in the [minors], so we jut have a great pitching program.”

Batavia resident Bob Polinsky, an assistant to longtime head coach Matt Holm, pitched in the Yankees and White Sox organizations. His career included four Triple-A seasons, as he went 37-42 with a 3.62 ERA from 1973 to 1979.

In addition to Piechota, a Western Michigan recruit who won two games last week, the Bulldogs tout some promising new arms alongside their veteran talent.

Junior left-hander Evan Acosta pitched four strong innings in his first varsity start, a 2-1 win against Kaneland on March 31.

The Bulldogs played their first four games at the artificial turf confines of Wheaton College’s Pfund Stadium, but don’t expect the staff’s pitch-to-contact

credo to change as play shifts back to natural grass. “[Turf] is probably a lot smoother and there are a lot less bad hops, but we have a great defense overall,” Piechota said.

“They would make the plays whether they’re on dirt or on turf.”

Scorching Sullivan St. Francis senior Jason Sullivan finds himself in a torrid state no matter where the Spartans are playing.

On Monday, he limited Aurora Christian to three hits in a five-inning complete game in the Spartans’ Suburban Christian Conference opener. Highlights from last week’s spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., included a grand slam against Shiocton (Wis.).

“He’s been our best player,” St. Francis coach Rich Janor said, “so he’s started of the season well.”

Things are looking like they may snap into spring for the balance of the week – before promptly snapping back to begin next week – but teams will take whatever window emerges.

What they did: Troop (five innings) and Bicknell (two) combined on a no-hitter in Monday’s 6-1 victory against visiting Wheaton Academy. Troop, a Michigan State recruit from Batavia, struck out 10.

The gem continued a Alex Troop sterling recent history for Marmion pitchers, including a combined perfect game from Tyler Friel, Tim Tarter, Mark Peters, Will Sterne and Jack Gunderson in 2010. Kaneland can hang against top competition. Playing at the University of Cincinnati on their spring break trip Friday, the Knights led perennial Ohio power Archbishop Moeller, 4-1, after three innings before scuffling down the stretch and losing, 8-4.

Curtus Thorson contributed two hits and an RBI for Kaneland.

Davis, a left-handed pitcher when he’s not in left field, put his strong arm to great use. With the score tied 3-all in the sixth, Neuqua (1-5, 0-1 UEC Valley) had runners at second and third with none out when junior Nick Hilgemann flied to shallow left toward the line. Davis caught it, then uncorked a dynamite throw home, but Montgomery had to make a nifty scoop and tag to retire pinch-runner Kevin Hutt for the double play.

“That was my first opportunity to do that,” Davis said of the outfield assist. “I was just happy to get him out, you know? … [Geneva third baseman Ben Chally] let me know he was going to tag, and right away I was like ‘Alright, I’m going to have throw this one.’

Good throw, good pick, good play all around.”

Geneva starting pitcher Max Novak then struck out Wildcats leadoff man Josh Piotrowski to complete the escape job.

Neuqua coach Robin Renner stood by the decision to send Hutt.

“My philosophy is if it takes an absolutely perfect play for them to throw somebody out, we’re rolling those dice every, single time,” Renner said. “If it was one foot either way, he’s safe. I mean the ball was right on the plate, one hop right to the catcher. The catcher made a great play, I thought, on the short hop. He had it against his chest, took it off his chest and made the tag.

Yeah, I would do it again.”

Geneva (4-0, 1-0 UEC River) scored three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, with the big blow coming on Chally’s two-run double. Chally took third on a throw home on the play, then scored on Wassel’s first sacrifice fly of the game.

The three-run outburst helped the Vikings move beyond the frustration of a pair of squandered scoring chances in the early innings, as sketchy baserunning and execution prevented the Vikings from getting to Neuqua starting pitcher Andy Sommers sooner.

Novak pitched six innings of three-run ball while Chally (1-0) worked around a one-out double in the top of the seventh to position the Vikings for their first win against Neuqua, a perennial powerhouse.

Sophomore shortstop Nick Derr reached base all four of his at-bats for Geneva, recording a single and three walks.

That included an intentional walk in the bottom of the seventh after leadoff man Croci sliced a double that was barely fair down the right field line and Montgomery popped up a sacrifice bunt try.

Derr was intentionally walked by reliever Tyler Bromer and Chally drew a walk to load the bases for No. 5 hitter Wassel, leading to the game-ending sacrifice fly.

The Vikings hope to have coach Hahn back when they return to action Thursday at Metea Valley.

“It’s hard,” Wassel said.

“You could tell in the warmups, we weren’t as sharp as we usually were with coach Hahn. We feel like we’re a complete team when he’s here.”

GENEVA – The Geneva and Neuqua Valley baseball teams each took late-inning gambles in tagging up a runner from third base on short fly balls to left field.

Neuqua’s bid to score was foiled in the top of the sixth by a throw from left fielder Garrett Davis to catcher Nate Montgomery.

One inning later, the Vikings’ risk panned out as Jason Croci scored on Jack Wassel’s second sacrifice fly of the game, giving the Vikings a 4-3, walk-off Upstate Eight crossover win Tuesday against Neuqua Valley.

Wassel, a left-handed hitter, came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, and poked a fly ball toward Wildcats left fielder Tyler Tesmond. Tesmond’s throw zoomed high, allowing Croci to cross with the winning run.

“I was questioning if they were going to send [Croci] at third,” Wassel said. “Right

when I saw him go, I thought it was too shallow, but I guess not. The guy got a little under the ball, sailed it, and we got it done.”

Fred Fortman – Geneva’s acting head coach for the game – said he thought the pressure scenario could work in the Vikings’ favor.

“The bottom of the seventh, the bases loaded, everybody’s Jack Wassel e m o t i o n s – their hearts are pumping like crazy,” Fortman said. “The Neuqua left fielder had a good arm in warmups but it was just too good at that time. His heart took over, and he sailed it, lucky for us.”

For Geneva, emotions weren’t just running high at the end. Vikings players wore green ribbons on their caps to show support for Drew Hahn, the 12-year-old son of Vikings coach Matt Hahn. Matt Hahn missed Tuesday’s game to be with Drew, who is battling a form of blood cancer.

Wright scored the third run in the fifth inning. He reached base with another single and swiped both second and third bases. Dennis then hit a ground ball to Warriors shortstop Garret Howicz, who threw to the plate in an effort to throw out Wright.

“We had just one bad inning where they came out and hit a few balls good on us. Our bullpen shut the door and gave us a chance to win,” Cougars catcher Will Remillard said. “We played as many innings as we needed to until we scored a run, and they allowed us to do that.”

Manager Mark Johnson hailed the bullpen, as well as Tseng, calling his stuff “electric.” Tseng developed a cut on his right thumb in the fourth, but the fifth was going to be his last inning, anyway.

Tseng’s translator is his countryman, Fox Sung, a former journalist who travels with the Cougars and can accompany coaches on mound visits. Sung came to the United States in 2008 and landed his first baseball translating job a year later, assisting Taiwanese Detroit Tigers lefthander Fu-Te Ni. Already bestowed a nickname, “Foxy,” Sung himself has accomplished one of the first steps of clubhouse assimilation.

While the Cougars followed the pregame protocol of largely letting that day’s starting pitcher be, Rosario sees the potential for Tseng to

enjoy more natural interaction as the season progresses.

Tseng, who received a $1.625 million signing bonus in August, already has taken steps to learn basic English, and Rosario calls him “a pretty smart kid.”

A little more than two decades ago, TinCaps pitching coach Burt Hooton, a former Cubs right-hander, worked with South Korean product Chan-Ho Park in the Dodgers organization. Park entered the system with extremely limited command of the language but soon learned.

“You just have to spend a little time with them and make sure they understand what you’re talking about,” Hooton said. “And understand what they’re talking about.”

The teams will continue their series at noon today, as players again spread the “Wake & Rake” rhetoric of day games after night games.

“It’s not going to be easy, but it’s what you’ve got to do,” Remillard said. “We’ll show up [today] ready to play, and hopefully we can win another ballgame.”

ST. CHARLES – A strong outing by St. Charles North pitcher Frankie Farry and heads-up baserunning by his teammates enabled the North Stars to give coach Todd Genke a home opener win for his birthday Tuesday.

Farry, a senior righthander, scattered five hits in a 3-0 complete game shutout over Waubonsie Valley in the Upstate Eight crossover game.

“One of the better gifts I can get is a win against Waubonsie,” Genke said. “[Waubonsie starting pitcher Tyler] Hasper is one of the best pitchers in the conference and for us to come out and beat him on our opening home game is pretty special.”

“Frankie Farry was the difference today. I’m really proud of him. To throw a complete game against Waubonsie in about 62 pitches is pretty impressive.”

“My fastball and definitely my changeup were working today,” Farry said about his first start of the season. “And I was putting my breaking ball where I wanted to.”

North (6-1) used effective baserunning to score two of its runs – one on a pickoff attempt and the second on a double steal – in the first inning.

Cory Wright led off with a bloop single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by John LeGare. Jack Dennis followed with another single that advanced Wright to third.

During Joe Kuczek’s at-bat, Hasper attempted to pick Dennis off at first base. The throw got past first baseman Zack Bennema, allowing Wright to score.

Farry opened the fifth giving up his only walk of the day to Nick Drago. Bennema followed with a sacrifice bunt.

The North Stars turned it into a double play when Drago made a wide turn at second and was trapped in a run down. Third baseman Jordan Bergren, who made the putout on Bennema, tagged Drago for the second out.

North ended another Warrior inning when catcher Kyle Khoury picked Devin Strickland off first base.

“I thought we had two very big pickoffs. They kept them from getting the big inning,” Genke said.

What was the recovery from your injury like over the offseason?

It was really frustrating for me, but I worked really hard over the winter and into the spring on physical therapy and everything. I’ve just been working all year on it to get back on

the field.

How exciting was it to be part of that comeback against Burlington Central on Saturday?

That was such an exciting game for us. We were really excited to get out for a home game. That was a big win for us. We were all really excited.

I know it’s early in the year, but what seems different about the team this year?

We have a really young team this year, but there’s so much potential and we’ve been working so hard. I think we’ve all come a lot closer as a team this year than in the past.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

I would say Madison Keith. She’s always been there. She’s been supporting me throughout this whole season, and I’m good friends with her.

Saints starting pitcher Adam Eck threw five innings of shutout ball before the Wildcats scratched across a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh off reliever Kyle Cook.

East coach Len Asquini was frustrated with an inability to cash in at key moments.

“We had scoring chances,” Asquini said. “Really the lack of offensive execution really hurt us today. We didn’t get a bunt down, we didn’t advance runners, we didn’t push a ball when we needed to push a ball and force them to make a play.

Lack of offensive execution hurt us again. Obviously we have something to work on with that.”

Geneva junior shortstop Anna Geary’s recovery from offseason ACL surgery has done nothing to quiet her bat. Geary had three hits in the Vikings’ 3-1, season opening win against Oswego, then added three more hits Saturday as the Vikings rallied past Burlington Central, 3-2.

Geary, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, tore her ACL while playing travel ball during the summer with the Wasco Diamonds, and was cleared just before the season began in the aftermath of August surgery. Growing up near Port-au-Prince, “music was all over the house; all over the street; all over Haiti,” BelO recalls.

Singer BelO, inspired by his roots in Haiti and the strength of his country

By CELIA WREN Special To The Washington Post An artwork’s title can be an affirmation. For BelO, the Haitian singer and guitarist known for his catchy reggaeand world beat-influenced music and for his dedication to social issues, the title of his fourth album, “Natif Natal,” serves just that function. “‘Natif Natal’ is a way for me to say that my sound has changed a little bit, but I’m still Haitian,” the musician says, speaking via Skype from the capital city, Port-au-Prince, with his 7-month-old daughter making occasional babbling noises in the background.

In recent years, he has been developing something of “an international sound.”

“I started to tour internationally, more than in Haiti, and I made a lot of exchanges with different musicians from around the world,” he says. “My music has become more sophisticated.”

But for him, “inspiration comes from my country first.” The Haitian Creole phrase “Natif Natal” – which might be translated as “Native Born” – emphasizes that bond with his homeland.

“Natif Natal” releases this month on the artist’s own label, BelO Music. It will be available Tuesday on iTunes.

Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, near Port-au-Prince, in 1979, BelO (real name, Jean Belony Murat) was only 11 when he realized he wanted to be a professional musician. His environment might have predisposed him to the choice. “Music was all over the house; all over the street; all over Haiti,” he recalls.

About the time he released his debut album, “Lakou Trankil,” in 2005, he took to calling his musical style “ragganga.” “It’s a mixture of Haitian traditional music with all kinds of foreign music – like reggae, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, funk,” he says. “It’s a music that reflects the reality of Haiti. Haiti is [part of] the African diaspora. We were

colonized by the French. We’re so close to the U.S., so close to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. So, we have a lot of influences.”

While touring and crafting his albums “Reference” (2008) and “Haiti Debout” (2011), he has gained a reputation as a socially conscious musician, grappling in song with issues such as HIV/AIDS awareness and the plight of at-risk children.

After the 2010 earthquake ravaged Haiti (he was abroad at the time), BelO threw himself into a marathon series of concerts to raise funds for relief work.

But he’s concerned that people recognize the beauty and strength of Haiti, and not think of it as a charity case.

“To me, the future of Haiti really depends on Haitians,” he says. “And that’s why, in my music, I keep saying, the change that everybody is hoping for is not coming from above. It is something we have to create.”

We hit it off immediately, and I was shocked to learn she’s a transgender woman who was born male. We have spent a lot of time together and are falling in love.

Stephanie will be having surgery soon to complete the transgender process.

I have been surprised and disappointed by the lack of support from my family and friends, whom I always thought were open-minded. Some have voiced support, but have shown no interest in meeting her and seem uncomfortable hearing about her.

I’m excited about this relationship and would have thought my family and friends would be happy for me, as I have been alone for a long time. But now I find myself refraining from mentioning Stephanie in conversation.

How can I discuss her with others? We are taking things slowly and not jumping into anything, yet we can definitely see ourselves spending the rest of our lives together. We have already

Penile implants less common as pills prove to be effective Dear Doctor K: Can you discuss penile implants? I haven’t had success with other treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Dear Reader: Medications, injectable drugs and devices such as vacuum pumps can effectively help most men who cannot get or maintain an erection. In particular, the three different pills for erectile dysfunction (ED) are effective about 70 percent of the time. Have you talked with your doctor about increasing the dose of the medicines you have taken?

And has your doctor done tests to determine the cause of your erectile dysfunction?

If these treatments haven’t helped you, consider a penile implant (also called a penile prosthesis). Penile implants allow you to have an erection at any time – and maintain it for as long as you want.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of implants: • Inflatable implants. Threepiece implants consist of a fluid-filled reservoir in the abdomen, a pump with a release valve in the scrotum and two inflatable cylinders in the penis. Squeezing the pump transfers fluid from

• Semirigid, or malleable, rods.

As the name implies, this type of implant consists of bendable rods.

The rods are bent upward to have sex and pointed down to conceal the penis under clothing.

Most patients choose an inflatable device because the penis looks more natural than with semirigid rods. One downside to inflatable implants is the risk of mechanical trouble that may require surgical repair. Most devices last 10 years or longer.

Malleable devices have pros and cons, too. They are easier to manipulate than inflatable implants and are simpler to insert surgically. But because the rods

always remain firm, their presence is harder to conceal.

You and your partner are more likely to be satisfied with the results if you know what to expect from a penile implant. If possible, meet with the doctor together before surgery. Make sure you understand the risks and benefits of the procedure and how the device works.

In the days before pills were available for erectile dysfunction, a number of my patients tried penile implants. They were uniformly skeptical when first presented with the idea, but most were glad they tried it. Since then, the devices have become even smaller and easier to use. Still, I haven’t recommended one of these devices in a decade, because simpler approaches have worked.

I know that smoking can cause lung cancer, and I’ve been told that smokeless tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth, but I’ve never read where a major league ballplayer worried about cancer – and a lot of professional ballplayers use smokeless tobacco. Do you have any information on smokeless tobacco? – Carl, San Pedro, Calif.

Dear Carl: University of California researchers surveyed hundreds of professional ballplayers during spring training recently and found a strong link between lesions in the mouth and the use of smokeless tobacco. The study surveyed pro players with a smokeless tobacco habit from the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, California Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners.

The research team concluded that the chance of developing precancerous lesions is 225 times greater for users of chewing tobacco and snuff than for nonusers. The researchers interviewed players about their tobacco use and conducted dental exams during yearly physicals. Oral lesions were present in 46 percent of the players who were users of smokeless tobacco, compared with less than 2 percent in nonusers.

Since smokeless tobacco cannot improve your baseball skills, but can possibly cause major physical problems, eliminate using smokeless tobacco now and forever.

What should West lead against three no-trump? How would that steer East in the right direction?

Some players like to open two no-trump with 19 high-card points. I will do that, but only if the hand is full of plus-values: lots of aces and kings, good intermediates and, preferably, a five-card suit. This North hand has too many minuses, especially with respect to aces and kings.

South does not like to respond one no-trump, but has no choice.

West should lead the spade nine, top of nothing. (Remember, if you lead low from length in an unbid suit, you guarantee at least one honor in that suit.)

South takes the trick with dummy’s jack and calls for a low diamond. What should happen now?

East must be wide awake.

Since South has the spade ace and king, he cannot also hold the heart ace. So, East should win immediately with his diamond ace and shift to the heart three, the low card saying that he has at least one honor in this suit and is trying to take tricks there.

West wins with his ace and returns the heart seven, giving the defenders five tricks.

Note that if East plays second hand low at trick two, South can sprint for home with three spades, one diamond and five clubs.
