Rauner seeks Kane officials to ‘endorse’ agenda

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Gov. Bruce Rauner brought his message to the Kane County Government Center on Tuesday morning, seeking county officials that would “endorse” his agenda.

Rauner has been making stops throughout the state, seeking local support for his plan. Rauner’s staff distributed a packet called “The Illinois Turnaround.”

“I am asking that the Kane County Board pass a resolution in support of our agenda,” Rauner said, adding several county boards and cities in the state have endorsed it.

Rauner spoke to a few dozen people in the government center’s auditorium. Many county officials were in attendance.

Rauner has been making stops to find common ground with officials throughout the state after many reacted with anger when Rauner’s proposed budget was released in February. At that time, local leaders were upset over potential significant cuts in the local governments’ share of the state income tax. Rauner stressed taking control away from special interests and said he aimed to “empower local voters.” He spoke of term limits and hit several other points, including workers compensation reform and lawsuit reform.

Chris Lauzen, chairman of the Kane County Board, said Rauner demonstrated a desire to connect with officials, and he predicted there would indeed be some points the Kane County Board could endorse. Lauzen, who introduced Rauner at Tuesday’s event, handed out a statement providing “some examples of where we can easily agree” and offer “support to one of the three most powerful political leaders in Illinois.”

Lauzen listed 13 such items, including that the state has “huge problems” that will require “huge solutions.” He was on board with

Also available at KCChronicle.com is the entire text of Lauzen’s statement regarding Rauner’s visit. making changes, saying “if we want the same results in Springfield, they should keep doing the same things on the budget.” He mentioned there must be major pension reform, that Medicaid eligibility “must be recalibrated” and stated “there needs to be an agency-by-agency review of spending cuts and consolidation.”

The chairman also listed three “more controversial” areas involving collective bargaining, campaign contributions and term limits.

“We can ‘customize’ our approach toward supporting reform in Springfield,” Lauzen wrote in his statement. “I think that we ought to make the most of this opportunity.”

Lauzen said he was pleased the governor had visited Geneva, and he said he couldn’t remember the last time that had happened.

In a brief meeting with reporters after the speech, Rauner said there were ways to improve that situation through reforms that could free up more resources to local municipalities. He said he’s been laying out such scenarios to mayors and village presidents and, “when I explain that to mayors and county board members, they get it.”

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns was among the harshest local critics of Rauner’s budget plan, saying the im-

pact on the city would be $1 million. In late February, he was among several local leaders who spoke out against the cuts during a Metro West Council of Government news conference.

Reached via phone, Burns said he wasn’t at the governor’s appearance, but he said the fact that Rauner is speaking about the plan is a positive thing.

“I think as long as the lines of communication are open between city leaders and the governor’s office, I’m confident that our message will resonate,” Burns said.

“And I would look forward to an open dialogue as the months go by.”

‘There is no excuse for child abuse’ Child Advocacy Center balloon launch aims to raise awareness

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Blue balloons filled the air Tuesday afternoon in Geneva, as crowds flocked to the Child Advocacy Center in Geneva to raise awareness that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The crowd included police officers, employees of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and members of a group called Bikers Against Child Abuse, as well as friends and community members.

Debra Bree, the Child Advocacy Center’s executive director, declared it the first “Balloon Launch for Hope” event, noting there were 295 balloons, one for each case handled by the center last year.

“This is a clear message that child abuse does exist,”

Bree said, adding those in attendance were “joining together to take a stand. …

There is no excuse for child abuse.”

Balloons were distributed to those in attendance, and they were released into the sky.

It was the cap to a day of awareness that also included the topic as the focus of Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon’s monthly media briefing.

McMahon, who also spoke at the balloon launch, led a conversation that included Bree, as well as Gloria Bunce, the executive director of CASA Kane County, and Lark Cowart, who is the chief of the juvenile bureau of the state’s attorney’s office.

They touted a recent donation of $25,000 from the Dunham Fund, used to buy a van to help with victims’ needs.

The van was parked outside of the facility during the balloon launch.

They clarified the school reporting duties would extend to anyone involved at a school – not only employees – and those who are required to report such abuse must notify the Department of Children and Family Services.

Reporting instances to a supervisor is not sufficient.

They also stressed anyone

who suspects abuse should call DCFS. Cowart men tioned she understood that could be difficult for those who aren’t mandated reporters, but she said it’s not as if they would be identified.

“We’re not going to knock at the door and say, ‘Aunt Susie asked us to check that out,’ ” she said.

They said the main goal should be protecting the children, but unfortunately they all deal on a daily basis with cases in which kids are

harmed by the very people who are supposed to protect them.

McMahon addressed the idea some might have a fear of reporting such suspicions, whether that hesitation could lead to an embarrassment or the idea that the witness simply wouldn’t believe the person suspected could be capable of such abuse.

“The thing to remember is that our responsibility is to protect the child,” McMahon said.

Batavia aims to set world record for largest kick scooter parade Event will be April 25 at Peg Bond Center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents are being invited to take part in setting a world record for largest kick scooter parade.

“We are needing everybody’s help,” Batavia resident Randy Simonian, who is organizing the event, said at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting. “This is not just for kids. First and foremost, we have to break a record.”

The event is set for 10 a.m.

April 25, rain or shine, at the

Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk, near Houston Street and North Island Avenue in downtown Batavia. It will start and end in downtown Batavia, Simonian said.

“Each scooter has to travel two miles to break the world record,” he said.

Simonian wants to break a record set in 2013 in New Zealand, when 489 participants set a Guinness World Record for largest kick scooter parade. He hopes to get 1,000 people involved in the event.

The event also will raise

money for Batavia United Way, which raises funds for programs that directly benefit Batavians, along with CHIP IN Batavia, which supports students in temporary or transitioning housing situations or who are facing the obstacles of poverty in Batavia.

Those interested can register at www.worldrecordbatavia.com. The cost is $5 a person, and those who sign up before April 18 will be included in a drawing to be the first person in the parade.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke voiced his support of the event.

“This is kind of a special

moment,” Schielke said.

“Hopefully, the community will jump behind this.”

Last year, Simonian scuttled plans to set a record for largest group hug. He wanted

to surpass the current Guinness World Record for largest group hug of 10,554 people. Simonian had said there wasn’t enough time to organize such a large event.

Campton Hills voters chose incumbents Susan George and Laura Andersen and newcomer Michael O’Dwyer as trustees, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.

Blecker received 1,459 votes to incumbent village President Patsy Smith’s 595. The election ends Smith’s run as the village’s first and only village president, having served since it was incorporated in 2007.

Smith did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Blecker ally Nicholas Girka was elected village clerk with 1,475 votes over write-in Smith ally Stephany Impson, who received 501 votes.

Smith’s slate of other writeins were Turgeon, who received 520, and Sheluga, who received 540. Trustee candidate Steven Galloway, a Smith ally on the ballot, received 894 votes.

O’Dwyer said the election shows residents want change.

“And that is what they are going to get,” O’Dwyer said.

“We are putting budgets up on

the website. People are going to see how we are spending money.”

Andersen said she had mixed feelings.

“It didn’t have to be this way,” Andersen said. “I’m glad that the village is on a brighter path, and we have a lot of work to do.”

Smith and trustees have clashed for months. The incumbent and her slate ended up as write-in candidates when Blecker’s team filed nominating papers to run in a February primary.

Voters say no to Blackberry Township road referendum

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Although results improved from a 2013 attempt, a referendum seeking funds to improve roads in Blackberry Township fell short Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

With all six precincts reporting in Kane Coun-

ty, there were 864 no votes, compared to 641 yes votes.

In the most recent previous attempt, in 2013, 623 voted against it, and 300 voted for it.

Voters were asked whether the limiting tax rate for the road district should be increased from 18.5 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation to 32.5 cents. Officials said that

would cost about $140 more a year in taxes for someone who owned a home valued at $300,000.

Officials had pointed to a study done by Sugar Grove-based Engineering Enterprises that suggested if road work was not done, two-thirds of the roads in the township would be in fair or poor condition in the next five to 10 years.

Jesse Heffernan re-elected as Lily Lake village president

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com LILY LAKE – Incumbent village President Jesse Heffernan won re-election Tuesday with 116 votes, defeating challenger Michael Carlson, who had 86 votes, according to unofficial results.

Heffernan has been village president since 2007. She did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Carlson based his campaign on what he called a

lack of clarity in the village’s finances. Although he lost his bid for the village’s top job, Carlson said the turnout showed his message struck a chord with voters.

“We have a lot of issues in the village,” Carlson said.

“Whether [Heffernan] is going to take the hint ... if it was me, it would be a clear message that people showing up to vote … means the people do care. They care about the town and everything in particular.”

Two incumbents, 1 former District 303 board member win election

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The three winners of the St. Charles School District 303 Board race Tuesday night all have previous experience serving the school district.

Incumbent Kathy Hewell received the highest number of votes – more than 3,400 – followed by Lori Linkimer with more than 3,000 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Linkimer previously served a few terms on the

school board, starting in the late 1990s.

“This is my passion,” Linkimer said Tuesday night. “I’m very glad to be back, it’s a wonderful thing.”

Linkimer watched results come in Tuesday at Riverside Pizza and Pub in downtown St. Charles with incumbent Nick Manheim, who won re-election with more than 2,000 votes.

Upcoming priorities for the school board members in the next few years include addressing declining enrollment, a decrease in state aid

and the hiring of a new superintendent, Linkimer said.

Hewell, Linkimer and Manheim all were endorsed by the St. Charles Education Association, St. Charles Education Support Personnel and St. Charles Transportation and Maintenance.

Incumbent Judith McConnell, who was serving in her first term on the board, did not win re-election.

Other challengers in the race were Stephen Bruesewitz, Jennifer Reeder, Rick Leidig, Michael Vyzral and Lowell Yarusso.

by Trish Beckjord, according to unofficial results Tuesday.

Beckjord led the race

for three four-year terms with 3,098 votes in Kane and DuPage counties.

Incumbents James Cooke and Bob Thomson trailed – but secured another term – with 3,084 and 3,052 votes, respectively.

“I’m certainly happy to serve another four years,” Thomson said. “It was cer-

ST. CHARLES – A ballot measure that would have resulted in a new recreation center facility for the St. Charles Park District failed Tuesday night.

A total of 4,203 people voted against the park district’s referendum, and 1,355 voted for it, according to unofficial election results.

In addition to a recreation center on the far west side of St. Charles, funds from the referendum effort would have gone toward converting one or more fields at the district’s East Side Sports Complex to synthetic turf and would have allowed the park district to acquire additional land.

An approved referendum would have meant that someone with a home valued at $300,000 in the park district would pay an average of $92.40 more a year for 20 years in taxes, according

to estimates released this year by park district officials.

The park district will continue to honor its mission of enriching the quality of life for district residents through excellence in programs, parks, facilities and services, wrote Holly Cabel, the park district’s director of parks and recreation, in a statement released Tuesday night.

St. Charles Park Board President Bob Thomson said in a phone interview that some of the reasons he heard people voted against the referendum was that they didn’t want to see a tax increase; they opposed the proposed site of the recreation center; and there were concerns about the traffic impact of the center for nearby neighborhoods.

“We may have to go back and look at our master plan and possibly get other input from other focus groups to see what we can do moving forward,” Thomson said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden won election to the Batavia School Board on Tuesday night, along with community volunteer Chris Lowe.

In addition, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel was re-elected to the board. Eight candidates ran for three seats on the board.

According to unofficial results, Dryden was the top vote-getter with 2,393 votes, followed by Dremel with 1,775 votes. Lowe received 1,676 votes.

Dryden said he attributed his win to the town “knowing my story.”

“I think they expect me to fight the good fight,” he

said.

In winning election to the board, Lowe said he had a good support base.

“I am looking forward to getting to work,” Lowe said, noting he wants to improve communication between the community and the board.

Dremel said she has had the chance to talk to both Dryden and Lowe.

“They both are very passionate and care about the kids,” she said.

With 528 votes, Batavia School Board member Melanie Impastato lost her bid to retain her seat. Challenger William “Bill” Gabriel received 1,321 votes, followed

by Michelle Olache with 1,274 votes, Ron Rechenmacher with 1,159 votes and Ellen Knautz with 669 votes.

Olache, Rechenmacher and Gabriel ran together as a slate.

During a candidate forum, several candidates had said the board needs to do a better job of communicating

with the public, including Rechenmacher, who said many community members are being left out of the process.

“We can and need to do better,” Rechenmacher had said.

Gabriel had proposed that the board hold an additional school board meeting every month “where the community can come and have real dialogue.”

Lowe said the school board needs to have a bigger presence in the community, including being at local festivals and football games.

“We need to be at as many places as we can,” Lowe had said.

But Impastato had said that communication is a “huge priority” of the board, and that communication with the public has improved since she was appointed to the board in June 2013 after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office fielded several accusations of electioneering too close to a polling site on Tuesday – including five instances in the Kaneland School District 302 area – but no violations were found.

According to the state’s attorney’s office, there were

several complaints candidates were standing too close to certain polling sites. Officials looked into it, but they found that was not the case.

Some confusion could have come from the fact candidates would not be allowed to distribute materials closer than 100 feet from the area at which voting was taking place, but that is measured from the area where the ballots are being cast, not the

front door of a building. According to the state’s attorney’s office, there were cones set up, with signs stating electioneering would not be allowed past that particular point.

There were other complaints, including that some signs were placed where they would not be allowed. According to the state’s attorney’s office, those complaints were handled.

Newcomers win seats on Kaneville Village Board

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Two incumbents were voted off of the Kaneville Village Board on Tuesday night, with a pair of newcomers earning the most votes among three victors in unofficial election totals.

Delbert Ward earned 77 votes, and David Kovach received 75 to finish in the top two spots in the election.

Incumbent Howard “Tim”

Christopher got 49 votes to win the third available position.

Incumbents Myra Ottoson (41 votes) and Paul Ross (36) were unable to retain their positions.

Kovach said he was pleased to win a seat.

“I know I’ve got some work to do,” he said Tuesday, adding that he is familiar with issues in the village as “I’ve been attending the meetings very regularly.”

Heading into the election, candidates identified issues such as road improvements and sidewalks as top concerns in the village. Also, candidates discussed the importance of keeping the post office in the village open.

Ward had said he wanted to be a new voice and a new face to support Village President Pat Hill. Kovach had said he was aiming to keep the village the way it was when he moved in 15 years ago.

Patrons cast their votes Tuesday in the consolidated election at the Sunset Community Center in Geneva.

Newcomer Ryan Kerry, a member of Kaneland’s finance committee, appears headed to join School District 302’s board, joining three incumbents who won seats in Tuesday’s election.

Outspoken incumbent Tony Valente was unable to win re-election, finishing last among eight candidates, according to unofficial totals.

The candidates were vying for four available positions. Teresa Witt, the board’s vice president, finished with 1,187 votes, followed by Gale Pavlak (1,168), Peter Lopatin (918) and Kerry (905). Challenger Dan Nagel recorded 900 votes, followed by Pamela Voorhees (880), Jerry Elliott (789) and Valente (751).

Valente congratulated the winners.

“I think they have some challenges ahead of them,” he said, adding, “I know they will work really hard to solve the issues.”

Kerry thanked those who voted for him and said he was “looking forward to getting started.”

Witt said she, too, was grateful to her supporters.

She said she was excited about the vote totals and said “I really think we’re going to have a good team moving forward.”

“I think it’s a great day for Kaneland,” she said.

Pavlak said she hopes in the future, the board will be one “that is respectful of all of the people there.”

She said she is familiar with Kerry and said “I think he’ll be great.”

Lopatin said he was “incredibly grateful for the support I got from the community.”

“I think that the community really paid attention to this election,” he said, adding, “I’m very excited and pleased about the result, not just for myself but for all of Kaneland.”

Alluding to board tension that had involved Valente in the past, Lopatin said he was “optimistic that our discussions will be much more focused and much more productive, and that we will be able to model good behavior for the kids in the district.”

Witt said she believes the board meetings will be different.

“Tony had good things to contribute,” she said. “He was a very passionate board member. ... I think it will be a little more peaceful on the board.”

She complimented Kerry and said he would be “a good teammate.”

“I think he has some great energy,” she said.

“He’s intelligent, and he has good business experience.”

Valente voted off Kaneland’s school board

Incumbents re-elected to Geneva’s school board GENEVA – Though given the opportunity, voters in Geneva School District 304 on Tuesday decided not to change the leadership of their school board.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial election results indicated each of the three incumbents secured a four-year term on the board, shutting out all four challengers.

“I think it’s a statement for the incumbents, for what the current board has been trying to do,” incumbent Mary Stith said. “I feel good about that.”

Kelly Nowak led the pack with 1,665 votes. Stith and Michael McCormick followed with 1,564 and 1,495

votes, respectively.

“I’m very, very grateful,” Stith said, noting it was a tough race with many good candidates.

Unofficial vote totals for the challengers were as follows: 1,113 for Taylor Egan; 1,077 for Tina Yagla; 954 for Ann Murtaugh; and 551 for Evelyn Schneider.

Schneider described the experience as humbling.

“I think I had a real ly good campaign where I didn’t do what others told me to do,” she said. “I gave it a valiant effort.”

Despite her seventh-place vote totals, Schneider said she is hopeful for future election attempts and will use this race as a learning experience.

For example, she said, her message likely won’t

change, but her method of delivery might.

“I congratulate all the three incumbents for making it,” she said.

Egan noted her confi dence in Nowak and Stith as continuing board members and said the board has a “pretty good grasp” on what needs to happen in the next four years.

She said it is too soon for her to know whether she will try for school board again.

“This has been nonstop since November,” Egan said.

McCormick, who watched the results come in with family, thanked the voters of Geneva for giving him a second term on the board.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to work,” he said.

Pam Turriff challenged incumbents Robert Handley and Chuck Dunham in the race for two six-year terms but came up short by a little more than 100 votes, results showed.

Chuck Dunham, who has

been on the board for eight years, led the race with 1,381 votes with all precincts reporting.

Handley, a trustee since 2001, came in a close second with 1,352 votes between the two counties.

Turriff got 1,244 votes among the 26 precincts.

Tuesday’s election was

the second consolidated election since 2012, when district residents voted to have elected trustees. Previously, the Kane and the DuPage county boards appointed the trustees at the recommendation of their respective board chairman.

Only incumbents ran in the 2013 consolidated election.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Newcomer John Krukoff joined incumbents Bill Grabarek and Dave Gualdoni in capturing the three available seats on the Elburn Village Board, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election.

Grabarek recorded 395 votes, followed by Krukoff (373) and Gualdoni (344) to win the four-year terms. Michael Rullman got 248 votes. Krukoff will replace Craig Swan, who was appointed to finish out the term of Ethan Hastert, who resigned when he moved out of the village.

Grabarek said he was “flattered” and “honored” to finish with the highest vote total.

“I’m surprised that I did as well as I did,” Grabarek said.

He added that he is excited about the next four years, listing tasks such as the construction of the Anderson Road bridge, the Elburn Station development and a pedestrian/ bicycle bridge among items on the docket.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” he said.

Krukoff has been a member of the village’s plan commission. He said he was pleased to win a spot. He said he hopes to work on the village’s infrastructure and get more devel-

opments into town. He said he would support recent discussions of seeking a sales tax increase to pay for police pensions, rather than attempting a referendum.

“I think it’s a much better way than to raise real estate taxes,” he said, adding that if the funds are earmarked for the police pensions, “I think that people will support it.”

Gualdoni said he still has work to do. He said one item he hadn’t completed was getting certain emergency planning in place for the village.

Also, he said keeping the police force intact “was one of the things that spurred me forward.”

Oliver received 12,848

votes across five counties – Kane, Kendall, DeKalb, LaSalle and Will – and the Aurora Election Commission, securing her one of the two six-year terms.

About 5,300 of her votes came from the 76 precincts in Kane County, results showed.

Patrick Kelsey garnered 9,513 votes, more than enough

to secure the second seat, results showed. Of the total, he earned about 4,100 votes with Kane County voters.

Challengers Jimmie Delgado and Emmett Bonfield trailed with 7,084 and 6,290 votes, respectively.

Their voting totals in Kane County were 2,964 and 2,865, respectively.

ELGIN – Incumbent Donna Redmer and newcomer Jeffrey Meyer won seats on the Elgin Community College Board, as incumbent Bob Getz lost his re-election bid Tuesday.

Redmer received 11,803 votes; Meyer received 10,067; and Getz received 9,792, according to unofficial results, with returns from both Kane and Cook counties.

The three sought two sixyear terms on the board.

Redmer sought another term, she said, as upcoming

issues will require a history of the college and educational expertise, which she noted she has, having been an educator for about 35 years.

Raising the ECC graduation rate was one of the issues Redmer sought to address.

Meyer had unsuccessful bids for the Kane County Board in 2012 and the 43rd Representative District in 2014.

Problems he tried to address during the campaign last fall – such as property taxes and unfunded pensions – carried over to this race, he said.

Gaugel claims seat in St. Charles’ Ward 4 ST. CHARLES – Steve Gaugel in 2011 lost the Ward 4 aldermanic race to Jim Martin by 11 votes, and he was determined not to let that happen again.

That determination paid off Tuesday night, as Gaugel earned 449 votes to beat newcomer Matt Dowling, who received 391 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Gaugel will replace Martin, who decided not to run for re-election after 35 years on the St. Charles City Council.

The victory was a huge sigh of relief, Gaugel said Tuesday night. He attributes his win to hard work.

“I’ve got the blisters on my feet to show for it,” Gaugel said. “I walked every last street in this ward.”

Bancroft keeps Ward 3 seat in St. Charles

Alderman Todd Bancroft received 430 votes to beat newcomer Naomi Bosko, who received 201 votes, according

to unofficial election results.

“We’re very happy here,” Bancroft said Tuesday night, speaking from Salerno’s on the Fox in downtown St. Charles. “It was a great team effort, a lot of support.”

Bancroft was joined by his family, coworkers and some of his fellow aldermen, and Rogina also made a brief appearance. Rogina appointed Bancroft to Rogina’s former

seat in the ward after Rogina was elected mayor in 2013.

Bosko took in the results with family and friends at her home. She has not ruled out another run for a Ward 3 seat.

“I wish [Bancroft] the best, and I just still love St. Charles as much as ever,” Bosko said.

“I hope that what’s ahead for St. Charles is positive. I will now support the people that are in charge of that.”

In addition, Trustee Mark Carroll won election to the board, after being appointed to the board in May. According to unofficial results, Guethle received 1,203 votes, followed by Curtis with 957 votes and Carroll with 910 votes. Challenger Allen Cavender received 568 votes, and challenger Anise Hesson received 527 votes.

Curtis, who first was elected to the board in 2011, had said she wants to continue the momentum that the board has developed over the past four years.

Carroll had said he would like to see a new community center in the village, but not necessarily at the site of the former activity center. He said that wouldn’t be the best use of the land, adding that the land should be developed for commercial or retail use, and possibly apartments.

NORTH AURORA – Challengers in the races for North Aurora library trustee edged out two incumbents, according to unofficial results Tuesday.

In the race for two twoyear terms, incumbent Bill Middleton led with 1,001 votes with all precincts reporting. Challenger Jim Hicks followed with 855 votes, topping incumbent Dominick Leo, who had 707 votes, results showed.

Meanwhile, six candidates vied for three full fouryear terms on the Messenger Public Library Board.

Unofficial results showed incumbent Mary Beth Hutches secured another term with 960 votes; challenger Corinn Sparks followed with 708 votes; and incumbent Justin Kline secured the third seat with 591 votes.

Incumbent Mark Saperston and challengers Paul Rodenback and Eric Brumbaugh trailed with 533, 426 and 491 votes, respectively.

NORTH AURORA – Jerry Auchstetter on Tuesday night was re-elected to the North Aurora Fire District Board.

A c c o r d i n g t o u n o f f icial results, Auchstetter received 972 votes, and his challenger, Victoria McHenry, received 493 votes.

Auchstetter has been on the board for 18 years – the last seven years as board president.

McHenry is a founding member of the North Aurora Mothers Club.

During the election, McHenry said she was offering voters a fresh choice.

“Typically, there hasn’t been opposition to these candidates,” McHenry had said. “I think that people should have choices. I just think it is time for a fresh voice in there and a fresh perspective.”

Auchstetter had said he was proud of the department’s modernization since he has been on the board.

“When I came on back in the ’90s, we had one paid fire chief, and I think we had two full-time firemen, and the rest of the fire department were volunteers,” Auchstetter had said.

“From there, we went on to [have] 26 full-time firefighters. The department now is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to service our community.”

OBITUARIES CHARLES J. MYLER Born: June 20, 1931 Died: April 6, 2015 Charles J. Myler, 83, of Aurora, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on April 6, 2015.

He was born on June 20, 1931, in Ottawa, Illinois, to John Myler and Mary Hart Myler.

After graduating from Ottawa High School at the age of 16, he attended undergraduate school at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. It was there that he developed his love of philosophy under the guidance of his uncle, the Right Reverend Monsignor Charles Hart, for whom he was named. After graduating from Catholic U, he obtained his law degree at Georgetown University Law School, also in Washington, D.C. Charlie became very interested in politics in general and the Democratic Party in particular while studying at Georgetown and running an elevator in the Senate Office Building.

He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1955.

After receiving his law degree in 1955, Charlie was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was chosen to be a member of the Counter Intelligence Corps and was sent to study Romanian at the Army Language School at the Presidio in Monterey, California. After eight months there he was sent to Nuremburg, Germany during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and spent two years working in refugee camps aiding refugees from behind the Iron Curtain.

Upon his discharge from the Army in 1958, he came to Aurora to practice law with the firm of Sears & Streit. In 1960 he joined Clarence J. Ruddy to form the firm of Ruddy & Myler. After Clarence’s retirement in 1985 Charlie became the senior partner in the firm known as Myler, Ruddy (Philip) & McTavish (Alex), along with partner Richard G. Larsen. For most of his career he practiced civil litigation and later concentrated his practice on Chapter 11 reorganizations under United States Bankruptcy Laws. He greatly enjoyed helping small businesses emerge from financial difficulties.

When Charlie’s daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1971 with Down Syndrome, he co-founded the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association with fellow Fox Valley Park District trustee Bob Stuart.

He served on the Special Rec board for over 30 years, serving as president several times. He was appointed to the Fox Valley Park District board of trustees in 1978, serving on that board for 30 years and as its president for one term.

He also served on the Fox Valley Park District Foundation board until his death.

In 1975 Charlie was the driving force behind the formation of the Illinois Developmental Disabilities Advocacy Authority, a group dedicated to the rights of persons with disabilities. He served on that board until it was absorbed into the present Illinois Department of Health and Human Services.

He was a member of the Kane County, Illinois, and American Bar Associations. He was licensed to practice before the Illinois and Federal Courts. For over 30 years he was the moderator of the annual Kane County Bar Association’s memorial service for deceased members of the local Bar. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kay; his daughters, Jennifer of Aurora and Kathe (Mark) Makoui; and his granddaughters, Hannah Roze and Sarah Abigail Makoui, all of Montgomery; his sister, Mary Margaret Russo of Rhinebeck, NY; one niece and five nephews; 18 great-nephews and

great-nieces; his first cousin, the Hon. William T. Hart of Chicago; first cousin, Denis Hart of St. Louis; his stepchildren, Richard Gee, Jon Gee (Becky), and Diane Gee Taylor (Tim); by step-grandchildren, Adam Gee, Damon Dombeck and Dylan Dombeck; his mother-in-law, Wilma Stark; and by his brother-inlaw, John Stark (Yanzi).

Aubrey was born on November 17, 1940, in Flat River, Missouri, the son of the late Aubrey V. Pratte, Sr. and Lucille (Winch) Pratte. His family moved to Martinsville, Indiana when he was 7. He attended school in Martinsville and then Indianapolis. He married his high school sweetheart, Lynda James on July 27, 1963 in Indianapolis.

He was transferred by his company to the Chicago area in 1974 as Corporate Manager of Inventory Control. Aubrey was the former owner and operator of K.I.S.S. Photography in Aurora. Aubrey retired from Geneva Township as the Assessor in 2010. He had 25

years as a Real Estate Appraiser.

He was actively involved with the Republican National Committee since 1965. After retirement they moved to Industry, Illinois to be near their grandchildren.

Aubrey was an avid nature lover.

He enjoyed hiking, birdwatching, photography and reading. He spent many joyous hours with his grandchildren.

Aubrey is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Lynda of Industry; his son, Donald of Indianapolis, Indiana; his daughter, Julia Frankhauser (Christopher) of Bushnell; his 3 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Jacob and Chloe, and many other family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Arbra Lue Dyer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2015, at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bushnell City Cemetery.

This work will require the temporary shutdown of traffic signals with the control of the intersections replaced by four-way stop signs, for about four to six hours an intersection.

During this work phase, traffic traveling through the intersections shall experience longer than normal traffic delays, the release states.

Traffic signal equipment upgrades are scheduled for 16 intersections along Randall Road from Fabyan Parkway to Silver Glen Road, starting the week of April 13, weather permitting. The work is anticipated to be completed in late fall, according to the Kane County Division of Transportation.

This work will be conducted in two stages.

Stage one work, which will include upgrades to sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and new traffic signal foundations should take about three to five working days at each intersection and may result in temporary daytime lane closures and disruptions of traffic at the intersection, the release states.

Work will be done from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and will start at Glen Eagle Drive and Randall Road, progressing north to the Silver Glen Road-Randall Road intersection.

But beyond the 10 official holidays, what currently counts as worth singling out depends on the whims of presidents and the media. Is Pearl Harbor Day a sort-of holiday?

Will Sept. 11 merit an official commemoration 20 or 50 years from now?

Freedom Day, if it doesn’t displace Columbus Day as a first-tier holiday, would be an excellent candidate for a new designation; so would Juneteenth, Women’s Equality Day, Earth Day and birthdays of great Americans such as James Madison and Benjamin Franklin.

As a nation dedicated to politics at its founding, the U.S. is well-served by debating and deciding what we collectively remember about our moments of greatness, and about the men and women who deserve fame, in the best

sense of the word.

There remains the question of how exactly to make these days “official” without adding a federal-government vacation day.

Begin a tradition of presidential proclamations with a common format for these occasions? Hold a ceremony in Congress? I’d like to see practical ideas for official recognition that might encourage popular participation.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR THE SOLUTION, NOT THE PROBLEM To the Editor: State-funded mental health providers are once again facing the looming possibility of severe funding cuts.

If Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget were adopted, our community mental health center would lose funding that supports all of the mental health services for 1,847 of the 4,000 clients that we now serve.

It does not make economic sense to cut mental health services when the savings achieved then shift care costs to hospitals, paramedics, public safety and homeless service providers.

During the last period of severe cuts to state-funded community mental health treatment services, from fiscal year 2009 to 2011, the state cut mental health and co-occurring addictions treatment services by $113 million, according to a policy brief from Thresholds that analyzed data provided by the Illinois Hospital Association.

The state and hospitals then spent an estimated $131.4 million in increased hospitalizations and institutionalizations as a result of people losing access to community-based treatment.

The policy brief showed emergency room visits for behavioral health crises spiked by 19 percent around that period. About 25 percent of these hospital emergency room visits resulted in extended hospitalizations lasting – on average – 6.7 days. One emergency room visit/hospitalization in a behavioral health crisis costs $6,328, and the cost of a full year of community-based treatment for a serious mental illness is $10,243.

Community behavioral health services are the solution, not the problem.

ENEVA – Eleven players with freshly distributed Northwest League championship rings now populate a clubhouse most recently inhabited by the 2014 Midwest League champs.

There’s no question of direction when it comes to the transitioning Cougars. The fans who’ll greet them when the franchise opens its 25th season in Geneva on Thursday night ought to have it pretty good, too.

In September, the Cougars won a title with Cubs prospects a few days before welcoming the Arizona Diamondbacks as their new player-development contract partners.

For the 2015 Cougars, it also is a likely hypothetical end result if pitching coach Doug Bochtler’s staff were ever to go to battle against one of its Midwest League counterparts.

Ten of the club’s 13 pitchers stand 6-foot-3 or taller, while nine weigh at least 200 pounds.

“That’s just random. I mean, you’ve got short pitchers, tall pitchers, and we’re just lucky enough to have [bigger] guys,” 6-5, 197-pound right-hander Markus Solbach said. “It’s pretty cool. Yeah, I didn’t think about that.”

“We were told as soon as we got here how good that team was. That they were a special team. Real good pitching,” Curtis said. “And that was a big focal point, was their pitching, so the pitching staff kind of wants to keep the same thing going.”

And why not? A champion by any other name, league or affiliation still reigns at the top of his or her craft.

“It was awesome. The first championship of my life. The first time I got a ring,” said righthander Markus Solbach, a native German. “It was pretty exciting. It was a great team, great atmosphere. The coaches were great. I mean, if you win a championship, everything is more relaxed in the end because you already got that far, but it was awesome.”

D’backs officials have confirmed plans to dispatch Johnson – a 6-10 lefty who’ll be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in July – to Kane County this season as a special assistant.

Righty Brent Jones, a fourth-round selection of the D’backs in last season’s Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft, is set to get Thursday’s Opening Day start.

Wright wasn’t as sharp as he would have liked in the first two innings, giving up three hits, but he settled down the second time through the order and didn’t yield another hit until the sixth inning.

“I’ve played these guys the last couple years now, so the

first time through the order I was leaving the ball up a little bit, so I made the adjustment to what they were doing,” Wright said.

The North Stars added a pair in the top half of the sixth to increase the lead to 5-0, giving plenty of padding for Wright to go back out for the sixth.

“He’s a hard guy to get the ball out of his hands,” Genke said. “I wanted to take him out in the fifth, and he wanted to go again. He’s just a tremendous competitor, and he leads us and we follow. It’s great to have him out there competing like he does because it’s fun to watch and it’s fun to play behind.”

Despite the limited amount of nonconference games to work with in the early going, the Vikings will look to find their identity quickly, Hahn said.

The teams are set to resume the series this afternoon in North’s home opener.

“We’re still trying to get to know our team,” Hahn said.

“It might take a little shakeup in the batting order. We’re getting guys on base, but we’re still looking for that guy to come through and get some runs.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Although St. Charles East’s Austin Regelbrugge and Batavia’s Evan Acosta pitched nearly flawless baseball in Tuesday’s game between the Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivals, both earned a no-decision.

Relief pitchers replaced both Regelbrugge and Acosta in the seventh inning of the then-scoreless game.

Regelbrugge did contribute to the rally in the eighth inning that pushed across the winning run in the Saints’ 1-0,

extra-inning victory.

With one out in the eighth, East’s Jake Asquini reached base on an infield error.

Regelbrugge, the next batter, worked a Jake Asquini full count from Bulldogs reliever Nick Rogalski.

Asquini broke for second base on the next pitch, which Regelbrugge grounded to Bulldogs shortstop Kyle Niemiec.

The junior’s only play was a forceout at first.

“That was a double play ball,” Saints coach Len Asqui-

ni said. “Fortunately, Austin worked that count to 3-2 so we were moving Jake on that.”

After issuing an intentional walk to Saints catcher, Anthony Adduci, Rogalski faced Jimmy Dale.

The junior shortstop hit a sharp grounder that just eluded Niemiec. Asquini scored all the way from second when the throw home was wide to the first base side.

“We had to send him,” Len Asquini said. “We couldn’t take a chance and not send him. He was moving all the way.”

Said Jake Asquini, the coach’s son: “I was watching

In the first six innings, Acosta gave up only two hits, one walk and struck out five while Regelbrugge yielded four hits while striking out four batters.

“I was just mixing it up the whole time, trying to keep them off balance with all my different pitches,” Regelbrugge said. “I didn’t want throw one thing too much.”

Both teams put runners in scoring position in four of the first six innings, but the pitchers worked out of the jams.

“We had a couple of opportunities that didn’t come through because Evan is tough on the mound; there’s no doubt about it,” Len Asquini said.

“Evan pitched real well.”

Batavia coach Matt Holm said.

“But we’re struggling now, and we’re not finishing things.”

Saints reliever Stephen Podany earned the win while Rogalski took the loss.

Tuesday was the first of three straight games between the UEC River foes.

The teams square off today in Batavia before the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1 UEC River) return to East (3-2, 1-0) on Thursday.

GENEVA – If food poisoning couldn’t stop Cory Wright, a blustering wind and temperatures in the 40s certainly weren’t going to be a factor.

The senior southpaw shut down Geneva on Tuesday afternoon to help the St. Charles North baseball team to a 5-1 victory against Cory Wright the Vikings in the teams’ Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener.

“Obviously, I’m not in the best shape right Matt Hahn now, but I just battled through it and had fun today,” said Wright, who had a bout with food poisoning at his brother’s wedding during the weekend. “I didn’t have a very good feel for my pitches today, so I just had to go out there and compete the best I could and locate.”

The Kansas State-bound lefty went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three.

“Cory’s just one of the best kids in the state on the mound or anywhere, for that matter,” North Stars coach Todd Genke said. “He comes right at you and forces you to put the ball in play, as well. Excellent defender, shuts down the baserunning especially with Kyle Khoury behind the plate, as well, so that’s a great, great matchup for us.”

The North Stars (6-0, 1-0) had their leadoff hitter reach safely in all seven innings while reaching Geneva starter Mitchell Murgess for three runs over five innings.

North opened the scoring in the first inning when junior Brendan Joyce drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an overthrow.

John LeGare singled and scored in the second, and the North Stars added another run in the fourth when Tyler Mettetal’s sacrifice fly plated LeGare.

Doing the little things better than Geneva (1-3, 0-1) was the difference in the game, Genke said.

Madi Jurcenko got the ball first, about 30 feet out from the goal, and sent it in during the 18th minute of Tuesday’s clash between the Knights and Barbs.

It was the only goal, giving Kaneland the win in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener for both girls soccer teams.

“I saw the goalie had come out to try and save it, and the ball was bouncing over to me and she was real far out,” Jurcenko said. “I knew if I hit it, it would go pretty far, and it went off my foot just right.”

DeKalb (2-3, 0-1) kept attacking all game but couldn’t connect. Hanna Hickey’s foot went high on a shot in front of the goal, and when the ball went past her McKenna Wallin was there to take a shot, but Emily Chapman made the save

Chapman was peppered with shots all night from the Barbs, but kept turning them away. Natalie Vaughn-Low had a free kick from about 30 feet out, and with the Barbs

looking as if they were going to run a play, Vaughn-Low took a shot but just missed as Chapman glided to her right for the save.

“With a game like this, it’s about who’s going to make a

mistake,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “They made it, it’s unfortunate for them; it’s fortunate for us. We’ll take it. We’ll take the win. ...

[Haglestein] played a real good game and it’s just unfortunate.

But that happens. It could have happened to us. Our goalie could have been out of position and they kicked it in and I’m sitting here talking about a loss.”

DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton said he was impressed by the Kaneland defense and Chapman.

“You have to give credit to a good defensive effort and a good goalie,” Hamilton said.

“She made some very brilliant saves. We weren’t on the right end, but it’s coming. We know that it’s coming.”

For the Knights, it’s the first of four games this week – including a home game Friday against Sycamore.

“It’s definitely starting the week off right,” Jurcenko said.

“It gives us that motivation to know we can succeed. It’s just what we needed.”

North Stars score early, often in victory

By NICK AMATANGELO editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North softball team used strong hitting to dismantle South Elgin, 12-0, in five innings Tuesday.

The North Stars (2-1, 1-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Divison) were lifted by senior Erin Nemetz, who went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, a walk and three runs scored.

South Elgin (2-4, 0-1 UEC Valley) had a promising half-inning to start the day.

The Storm loaded the bases, but junior Hannah Gordon struck out to end South Elgin’s momentum.

North started its half of the first with a single from senior Kaitlyn Waslawski that netted an extra base thanks to a throwing error. The next

two batters struck out before sophomore Allison Moberg was hit by a pitch.

Nemetz then ripped a double to left field, scoring Waslawski and Moberg. That gave the Stars a 2-0 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Nemetz emphasized wanting to come out and get momentum on her team’s side after dropping its most recent home game, to Plainfield Central.

“We were really pumped for this game because we had a loss at home last time,” Nemetz said. “So we really wanted to come out, start 1-0 in conference, start off on the right foot. Get the train going on the right track.”

North rallied for five runs and three hits in the bottom of the first with two outs.

North Stars coach Tom Poulin was happy to see his team come out swinging and build a lead.

“South Elgin is a good program; we always have battles with them over the years,” Poulin said. “So we had to come out and give our best because we knew they were going to give their best.”

North added to its lead in the bottom of the third behind another double from Nemetz, who scored two batters later on a catching error by the first baseman.

North broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth.

All nine North Stars batters had at least one at-bat in the inning, and the North Stars plated five runs to take a 12-0 lead. All but one of these runs again came with two outs. North was aided by

two Storm errors that kept the inning and momentum alive.

Allison Hausl shined for North in the circle, spacing six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. South Elgin stranded nine runners and committed four errors.

Storm coach Stephanie Katzenberger was frustrated with how North scored without the benefit of plays.

“One point I made to the girls was that they scored 12 runs. Were there any home runs? No,” Katzenberger said. “It was all on singles and doubles. It was all about putting the ball in play.”

Nemetz is excited to see her team building some momentum early in the season.

“We’re getting off on the right foot, and we’re excited for the season,” Nemetz said.

WHAT TO WATCH NBA: Bulls at Orlando, 6 p.m., CSN Derrick Rose could return to the lineup at some point this week.

Perhaps tonight when they try for a ninth consecutive road win over the Magic.

What did the team do when you weren’t playing tennis?

In our downtime, we went to the beaches and were obviously just chilling in our condo. … It was really nice. It was definitely good. We had a lot of tennis, so the downtime on the beach was super important, and we also grew closer as a team with the bonding.

To prevent blood clots, get up and move Dear Doctor K: What is a pulmonary embolism?

Dear Reader: A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot (called an embolus) suddenly blocks a blood vessel in the lung.

A small pulmonary embolus can happen without causing any symptoms, but a large pulmonary embolus can suddenly threaten your life.

To explain pulmonary embolism, let’s begin with a refresher on the circulation of blood in our bodies. Blood carries nutrients (like oxygen and sugar) to the cells of our body and removes waste material from the cells. The blood circulates because of the pumping action of the heart.

There are two circuits. One circuit pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen. The second circuit pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout the body through “pipes” called arteries. When oxygen leaves the blood to enter the cells, the blood becomes oxygen-poor. That oxygen-poor blood returns to the heart through pipes called veins.

Blood flows more slowly through veins than through arteries. Sometimes clots form in the slowly moving blood, especially if the flow is slower than usual. This is a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Usually, DVT occurs in the veins of the legs. Part of the clot can break away and travel through veins to the heart, and then on to the lungs. There, it travels through progressively narrower blood vessels. When the size of the clot is larger than the width of the blood vessel, it gets stuck in the blood vessel. DVT may cause pain or swelling of the legs. It is usually the result of extended inactivity. If you are inactive for many hours – during a long airplane flight or prolonged bed rest, for example – blood flow in your legs may slow.

DVT is more likely in people who are bedridden and those who are recovering from surgery.

Symptoms of pulmonary embolism can include chest pain and unexplained shortness of breath or coughing.

Doctors treat a life-threatening pulmonary embolism by using clot-busting medicines. Or a doctor may use a catheter to remove the clot or deliver medicine to dissolve it.

Non-life-threatening pulmonary embolism is treated with blood thinners to keep clots from getting larger and prevent new clots from forming. Blood thinners don’t break up blood clots that have already formed; the body dissolves most clots with time. But the blood thinner will be necessary for several months or longer.

To reduce your risk for DVT and pulmonary embolism: • Avoid sitting motionless for long periods of time.

• If you must sit, flex your calves, ankles and thighs from time to time to keep the blood flowing.

• Drink a lot of water.

• Walk around frequently during long plane flights or car trips.

• Get out of bed and move around as soon as possible after having surgery or being ill.

If you’ve already had DVT or pulmonary embolism, ask your doctor about compression stockings. They can help keep blood in the legs from pooling and clotting.

Dr. Wallace: I live in a neighborhood where a lot of teens hang around in a nearby park. They are not unruly, but I am shocked by the number of teens who smoke. I used to think more boys than girls smoked, but not anymore. I see a great increase in young ladies puffing a cigarette. I’m always wondering why these teens want to see their money evaporate into smoke – especially with the high price of cigarettes these days.

Your thoughts? – Grandma, Chicago Dear Grandma: The years between 12 and 20 are a time of experimentation, and smoking cigarettes is a strong challenge for many young people. According to Roberta Beach, M.D., director of adolescent services at the Denver Department of Health, living at home with adult smokers is the most potent factor pressing teens to smoke.

They feel it’s OK to smoke because Mom and Dad do it. The second strongest influence is from peers. If friends smoke, it’s just a matter of time before the nonsmoking teen will be tempted to take a puff and join the “fun.”

Your observation is correct. One of the main reasons that smoking is on the rise among girls, even as it’s declining among boys, appears to be the images the tobacco companies are using in advertising. Ads often display slim, attractive young women smoking.

Many girls falsely believe that smoking will give them a look of sophistication – and help them to stay thin.

Another reason why teens smoke is that they are oblivious to the longterm effects on the human body – lung cancer,

By applying common sense to this bridge problem, can South conserve his contract? He is in four spades. West leads the heart ace: four, eight (start of a highlow with a doubleton), nine. West cashes the heart king: seven, three, two. West continues with a third heart, and East ruffs dummy’s queen with his spade 10.

How should South continue?

The bidding has a modern slant. North’s three-heart response is called a cue-bid raise. It shows three or more spades and at least game-invitational strength.

Using this cue-bid, a jump to three spades would be pre-emptive, indicating four-card support but fewer than 10 support points. However, if you prefer to keep three spades as a game-invitational limit raise, go with it.

Note West’s third heart lead.

This had two strategies. First, ruffing away dummy’s heart queen would stop declarer gaining a later discard on it. Also, perhaps East’s trump would be high enough to effect an uppercut.

Note that both of these ideas come to fruition. South can no longer pitch his club loser on the heart queen. Also, if he overruffs the spade jack, West will gain a trump trick, and the defenders will eventually take a club for down one.

South, though, should see that if he sheds his club three under the spade 10, his contract will be safe (unless West is void in a minor).
