Holy Cross students craft own pizzas

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Given that cheese and sauce are his favorite pizza toppings, it is not surprising that 4-year-old Hughston Walker of Batavia decided to put them on the pizza he was making Monday at Chicago Pizza and Catering of Batavia.

“I just like them,” Hughston said, grinning.

Hughston is a preschool student at Holy Cross Catholic School in Batavia. He and his fellow classmates were given the chance to make their own pizzas at the restaurant.

This was his first experience making an actual pizza.

“He’s made pizzas before on his iPad,” said his father, Scott Walker.

The family has previously ordered from Chicago Pizza, and Walker said he was anxious to bite into his son’s creation.

“I like the sauce on their pizzas,” he said. “I’m sure it will be good.”

This is the fourth year Holy Cross students have taken part in the activity at Chicago Pizza.

“It’s always been a fun project,” Holy Cross preschool teacher Patty Mullins said. “At school, we make paper plate pizzas.”

Guiding the students through the process was Chicago Pizza owner Moiz Kanchwala, who said he enjoyed working with the kids.

“These are beautiful kids,” Kanchwala said. “Three or four different schools come every year. It’s something nice to do. My own children are grown.”

Three officers honored GENEVA – Three Geneva police officers were honored Monday at the City Council meeting for going above and beyond the call of duty, officials said.

The three, patrol officer Charles Parisi and sergeants Tim Baker and Dan Kott, received standing ovations as Chief Steve Mexin honored their “extraordinary service.”

Parisi, who has been on the force for nine years, was awarded a Lifesaving Medal for his use of an automated external defibrillator to save a resident’s life, Mexin said.

Parisi was assigned on patrol Feb. 27 and he was first on the scene of an ambulance call to a person who was un-

conscious, not breathing and without a pulse, Mexin said.

“He used the AED and administered ... CPR until paramedics arrived. When ambulance personnel arrived, the person had regained a pulse and began shallow breathing,” Mexin said.

Baker, a 30-year veteran of the department, received an Exceptional Duty Award for his decades of service with the Greater Fox Valley Chapter of Operation Snowball. Snowball is a community-based program that encourages youth not to use drugs, tobacco or alcohol.

Mexin noted that Baker has spent 20 years of his personal time participating, representing Geneva police at events to educate local youth on the dangers of substance abuse.

“For all of the things he’s done and continues to do is consistent with, and complimentary to what he does as a law enforcement officer,” Mexin said.

Baker, who also has served 30 years on the force, received an Exceptional Duty Award for taking the lead in raising more than $100,000 over two decades for Illinois Special Olympics, supporting children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

“He has spearheaded many fundraisers, all on personal time, but representing the Geneva Police Department while doing so,” Mexin said. “His selfless leadership has reflected proudly on himself and the Geneva Police Department’s commitment to self-sacrifice and public service.”

First Street project denied extension

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday did not grant any extensions on the ongoing third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project.

Aldermen at the regular council meeting did not make a motion to grant a 10th extension to developer First Street Development LLC or SMN Development LLC for their parts of the project. This means that the approvals on the developer’s preliminary plans will lapse because their ninth extension ends today.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin made a motion on an ordinance amending a purchase agreement between the city and SMN Development.

That motion was denied in a 2-7 vote with only Martin and

3rd Ward Alderman Bill Turner voting in favor of the ordinance. First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato recused himself from the vote and discussion.

The developers have been given multiple extensions over the past few years and the council did not wish to continue the process.

Joe Klein of SMN Development did present a previously presented plan that involves a performance stage and kiosks for businesses. This could serve as a temporary solution for SMN’s portion of the First Street site until the market improves, Klein said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said some aldermen had not

seen the previous plan because it was presented a few years ago. Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis said Saturday was the first time she had seen the proposed temporary plan.

City Administrator Mark Koenen said the issue before was not the temporary plan but the ordinance on the purchase agreement. He recommended the plan undergo staff review.

Rogina said he and the council think that First Street still has possibilities for development.

“It’s important to note the opportunities on First Street,” he said. “Those opportunities are open to all.”

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting voted 11-3 to make a few changes in its recently passed ordinance to increase the city’s homerule sales tax.

They previously had voted to increase the city’s home-rule sales tax by a half cent to help generate more revenue for the city’s electric utility. The increase would have a sunset clause of three years, ending in 2017.

The Illinois Department of Revenue had recommended a few minor language changes in the ordinance. In addition, it told city officials it will not impose a sunset clause.

Aldermen will need to approve an ordinance changing the tax back to one half percent and direct that it be filed with the state in early

2017 for the change to take effect at that time.

Aldermen already have approved an option that would raise electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax. In addition, the option would apply different percentage increases to energy and demand for commercial and industrial customers.

City staff had recommended the option.

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the option would provide sufficient revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities.

Under the option, residents this year will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates, plus a $4-a-month increase to the customer charge.

In 2015, residents also will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Court-appointed special advocates give youths a voice

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com At first Erin Blake didn’t think she had what it takes be a court-appointed special advocate.

Then she learned how much she could make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children.

“You realize these children don’t have a voice in court,” said Blake, a Geneva resident. “Nobody to just say ‘This is what this child needs.’ ” Blake became a court-appointed special advocate, or CASA, in 1994 and continues the volunteer work to this day. She is one of 223 CASAs this year in the Kane County juvenile court system.

Blake will join her fellow advocates and officials at noon Thursday at the 10th Annual Hands Around the Courthouse event at the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St., Geneva.

The CASA Kane County organization was first established in 1988 after the movement for special advocates began in Seattle in 1977, McQuaid said. The advocates agree to a two-year commitment, which is sometimes the amount of time a case needs to move through the court system.

Most of the cases involve neglect – the court at first might separate children from their parents because of something the parents did to harm them, or that they didn’t do something to cause harm, McQuaid said. These cases could include substance abuse or mental health issues.

“We want the parents to correct the situation that brought it to the attention of the court,” she said.

The CASAs write independent reports to help the judges make a decision with their juvenile abuse and neglect cases. This involves speaking to the parents, teachers, counselors, therapists and relatives or foster parents the children are placed with during the case. The CASAs then make recommendations to the judge based on their findings.

CASAs have to attend the children’s court dates, but they rarely have to speak before the judge because everyone has a copy of the report and attorneys usually do most of the talking, Blake said.

In Kane County, the CASAs are appointed to be the guardian ad litem for children younger than 21. This legally gives them access to all records pertaining to a ju-

venile’s case, said Kathleen Davine, a CASA volunteer of 11 years and counting.

Davine said CASAs might become one of the only constant adults in a juvenile case because social workers or therapists move on or have to be swapped out.

“You become a stable person in those children’s lives,” said Davine, a Geneva resident.

The cases are not without their emotional toll. Blake said that sometimes it’s frustrating to see parents that are not able to make the changes in their lives to get their children back.

The CASAs training advises them to keep control of their emotions in court.

“You can’t fix everything

in these situations ... it can be heartbreaking, frankly,” Blake said.

CASAs can help each other through trying times in their court cases, or with their mentors or case managers, Davine said. They are prohibited from talking to anyone else outside the program if they are not involved in the case.

Davine, Blake and other CASAs said they stay motivated by thinking about the children in the cases.

“This work, it feeds my soul,” Davine said. “That’s why I keep coming back to it, and I don’t see myself stopping. ... It’s the way that you can touch other people’s lives in this work better than you can in other volunteer roles.”

Leopard-print scarves draped from girls’ necks – and, when worn as a cape, their shoulders – throughout the two-hour, mother-daughter event that promoted empowerment and what it means to be super.

It was hosted by P.E.A.K. for Kids in partnership with the Kindness Campaign, a community collaboration inspired by Knights Against Bullying.

Before proceeding with such activities as yoga, face painting and karaoke, the event started with author Amy Logan reading her book that features a certain leopard-print accessory, “A Girl With A Cape.”

The book has a universal message about the importance of kindness and challenging readers to do good.

ELAINE PAULETTE Born: March 6, 1931 Died: April 5, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Elaine Paulette, 83, formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Brighton Gardens in St. Charles. She was born March 6, 1931, in Detroit, the daughter of Bernard and Katherine (nee Poss) Jungles. She was united in marriage to Fred Paulette on June 27, 1953, in Batavia.

She is survived by her children, Kathleen Goebel of Batavia and Charles “Chuck” Paulette of Maple Park; five grandchildren, Chris Goebel of Taylorville, Ill., Randi Paulette of St. Charles, Angela (fiancé Trevor Miller) Goebel of Joliet, Katherine (Josh) Butts of Batavia and Benjamin Paulette of St. Charles; her great-grandchildren, Jezzy, Emory, Reicken and Jacob; her siblings, Erwin (Rosanne) Jungles of Earlville and Sharon (Rex) Brown of Tennessee; a brother-inlaw, George Wall of Sycamore; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred; a granddaughter, Sharon Paulette; a sister, Marion Wall; and two infant great-grandchildren.

BATAVIA – When a tornado tears through a town and demolishes every building in sight, the funnel cloud and its trail of destruction is clear to the naked eye.

But when a computing data network uses a supercomputer the size of two football fields to collect the data and digitize its images, scientists learn more about what creates and sustains these destructive storms – and helps predict them.

WGN chief meteorologist Tom Skilling Tom Skilling hosted two presentations from various scientists and meteorologists at Fermilab on Saturday at the 34th annual tornado and severe weather seminar, which included the effects of climate change on weather.

Donna Cox, leader of the Laboratory National Center for Supercomputing Applications Advanced Visualization, presented the University of Illinois’ supercomputer, Blue Waters. Cox said Blue Waters is the fastest supercomputer of any university and the 10th fastest in the world.

A professor of art and design, Cox said she works with scientists to visualize their data.

“Most people do not know that numerical models permeate their everyday lives, from cars to airplanes to the very financial and econom-

ic models that forecast our economy,” Cox said. “We have worked with Argonne National Laboratories to visualize a … model of traffic in downtown Chicago and how to reroute traffic during severe storms.”

Gov. Pat Quinn spoke briefly about the deadly tornadoes the state experienced in 2012 and 2013, as well as drought and flooding. Quinn also serves on President Barack Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience to advise his administration on how the federal government can respond to the needs of communities dealing with the impact of climate change.

“We’ve had such severe weather in the last year in Illinois,” Quinn said to a crowd of nearly 1,000 people in Fermi’s Ramsey Auditorium. “Last April, we had the flood all across our state. We never saw anything like it in the history of Illinois since 1818. Then the killer tornado in November.”

Quinn spoke of going to Washington and four other communities in the state that were hard hit by severe tornadoes.

“It took lives, and in 12 seconds in Washington, Ill., it destroyed more than a thousand homes,” Quinn said. “I think it was a bless-

ing that we have the kind of advance predictions and advice and using social media in particular. It saved lives, clearly, last November. Because folks got the warning ahead of time that something very, very dangerous was headed their way and they got to cover.”

Quinn also shared how a first-grade boy who attended his State of the State Address this year had saved his family by learning about the early warning system in school.

“His teacher told him when you hear those sirens, you have to get cover, get down in the basement,” Quinn said. “So when he heard the sirens in Washington, Ill., he told his mom, ‘You’ve got to come down now, mom. You have to get to safety right away.’ She said, ‘In a minute or two, honey.’ He said, ‘Right away, mom.’ ” She listened to her son, and within a second or two after she went into the basement, their entire house was blown apart by a tornado.

Quinn is running for re-election and facing a Republican challenge from candidate Bruce Rauner, a wealthy North Shore businessman. However, Quinn’s appearance at the Fermilab event is not a stop on his re-election campaign, a Fermilab spokesman said.

Skilling and WGN, who organize the Tornado and Severe Storm Seminar at Fermilab every year, invited Quinn and his appearance was set up through Quinn’s office staff, not his campaign staff, the spokesman said.

YORKVILLE – Richard “Dick” Ordlock, 65, of Yorkville and formerly of Elgin and St. Charles, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family Wednesday, April 2, 2014.

He was born May 23, 1948, in Chicago.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Civil Air Patrol, CAP, a division of the Air Force Reserves.

He received three Commander’s Commendations: one for Safety Office at DuPage; work as Squadron Commander and establishing CISM (Critical Instance Stress Management Program) for Illinois.

There were three unit Citations, and the highest award in CAP, the Gil Rob Wilson Award.

Professionally, he was a mental health counselor and owner of Tricon Counseling in Carol Stream.

He graduated from NIU, Air Force Squadron Officer’s School and Air Command Staff College. He earned his master’s at The Alfred Adler Institute in Chicago and his Ph.D. from Interfaith Seminary with a Doctor of Philosophy Pastoral Counseling Addictions Focus.

He was a man of deep faith and humility, dedicating his life as an instrument for God. He had a unique talent for bringing out the best in others.

In spite of chronic pain and numerous health issues during his life, he never lost his faith nor his sense of humor. On first meeting him, his outwardly grumpy exterior masked his truly infectious belly laugh, clever wit and the sparkle in his eyes. A warm man, he had an abiding love for his family and especially, grandkids.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Molly Burke; sons, Craig (Amy Marshall), Chris (Emily Miller) and Todd (Cherise Kay); stepchildren, Kelly Coleman (Gragg Pierce), Sean Coleman (Gina Buck) and Erin Coleman (John Guevarra); grandkids, Aria, Christian, Cody and Brooklynn Ordlock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin Ordlock and Geraldine Schulze; and his birth mother, Lois Dillman.

CAMPTON HILLS – A 15-year-old girl, injured last week in a two-car crash in Campton Hills, is improving, Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said Monday.

According to the American Cancer Society, vulvar cancer accounts for about 4 percent of cancers of the female reproductive organs and 0.6 percent of all cancers. Statistically, 4,840 cancers of the vulva will be diagnosed and 1,030 women will die of it in 2014, according to the cancer society website, www. cancer.org.

CAMPTON HILLS – The village of Campton Hills’ first elected clerk, Carolyn Higgins, died March 30 at age 62 after more than a year battling cancer, her family said.

Higgins was elected in 2008 after the village’s incorporation and re-elected in 2011. She resigned March 14 after she became too ill to work.

Her husband, Al Higgins, said they were married 42 years and he knew her two years before they married.

“I’ve spent two-thirds of my life with the lady,” he said.

“She was my soul mate.”

Higgins said his wife had vulvar cancer, a rare cancer of the female genital area.

“No lady should have to go through that,” Higgins said.

Still, his wife came through chemotherapy and brutal radiation treatments, but then the cancer metastasized into an aggressive cancer in her lung, which then spread to other organs.

And although she had been in hospice care for a couple of weeks, Higgins said his wife was still up and around.

“She was still playing with grandchildren,” Higgins said.

“The Thursday before she passed, the grandkids were over, and then our daughter-inlaw and our younger son, and our daughter and son-in-law – and she wanted to go out for pizza. We went to Pizza Cucina in Wasco, and then she passed away Sunday night.”

Carolyn Higgins died at home with her family present, each spending some time with her, he said.

“The wind played a role in the rapid spread of the fire,” St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said. “It was a good-sized fire.”

The fire encompassed between 125 to 150 acres, he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, although Schelstreet said he has no evidence that the fire was a controlled burn.

“During the spring season, after the snow melts, typically we have a lot of wind that dries out the grass and vegetation very quickly,” he said.

Library board cited with violating the Open Meetings Act

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board violated the Open Meetings Act last fall when it went into closed session under an exemption for pending litigation – when there wasn’t any, according to the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Counselor.

Assistant Attorney General Joshua Jones wrote in a decision issued April 2 that the library board must release the portion of the closed session minutes and verbatim recording pertaining to litigation in order to remedy the situation.

Geneva library attorney Roger Ritzman did not respond to a voicemail message seeking comment.

Board president Esther Steel said she had not seen the letter yet and could not comment on whether the board would challenge the pubic access counselor’s decision.

“I will read the letter, talk to Roger, read the minutes and listen to the tape,” Steel said. “If we have to make [the minutes and recording] available, we will release it without question.”

Board members Steel, Steve Andersson, Patricia Lord, Travis Ketterman and Mark Adams voted in favor of going into closed session at the Oct. 13 meeting. Board member Susan Shivers voted against going into closed session and Bob Shiffler was absent. Shivers did not respond to a request for comment about why she voted no.

The public access counselor was responding to a complaint filed by the Kane County Chronicle regarding the closed session of the board’s Oct. 24 meeting.

Jones wrote that a review of the closed session verbatim recording “reveals that the board merely discussed actions that could potentially result in litigation, which is an insufficient basis to close a

meeting.”

The Open Meetings Law allows public bodies to close their deliberations from the public only in specific circumstances, such as personnel, land acquisition and pending litigation.

Jones’ letter states that when a public body closes a meeting to the public citing pending litigation, “there must be reasonable grounds to believe that a lawsuit is more likely than not to be instituted or that such an occurrence is close at hand.”

The library board did not show there were any grounds to believe a lawsuit was imminent, he wrote.

Attorney General spokeswoman Natalie Bauer said the decision is advisory, but most public bodies comply.

The emphasis from the public access counselor is to seek informal mediation,” Bauer said. “We want to get … bring the two parties together. The release of public documents – that is our main goal.”

Donald Craven, a Springfield attorney who represents Illinois media, said the requirements of closing an open meeting for litigation “has been around since 1983.”

“Open government is good for everybody,” Craven said.

Craven said it was based on a Springfield case where a city attorney asked the attorney in a zoning matter if his client would sue if they turned him down.

“The lawyer said, ‘I have to talk to my client,’ and the city attorney used that to his advantage,” Craven said. “ ‘That is probable litigation. We’re going into closed session.’ That doesn’t cut it.”

According to that decision, “the only matters which may lawfully be discussed at the closed meeting are the strategies posture, theories and consequences of the litigation itself.”

Putting Medicare under the microscope THE WASHINGTON POST Critics scoffed – and not altogether without reason – when President Barack Obama vowed to make major progress on domestic policy through the use of his executive power alone.

In at least one instance, however, Obama’s administration has shown that it is possible to reform government significantly without a new act of Congress and without crossing constitutional boundaries.

We refer to the Department of Health and Human Services’ announcement that from now on it will greatly

expand public disclosure of doctor-specific data on Medicare payments.

This will enable the public to know, in detail, what happens to the $70 billion-plus that the program spends on physician services each year. Previously, such data had been off-limits due to supposed doctor privacy concerns. But last year a federal judge in Florida, Marcia Morales Howard, lifted that ban, citing the public interest in illuminating potential fraud and abuse in the vast Medicare program – which made $28.8 billion in improper payments during 2011, according to the Government

Accountability Office. And HHS decided to incorporate the court’s reasoning into new regulations.

Under the new HHS rule, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services – or CMS – will begin posting a data set on the types of medical services furnished by individual providers, along with the charges submitted for each.

Individual patients will not be identified.

Doctors who see fewer than 11 Medicare patients a year will be exempt. “Release of physician-identifiable payment information will serve a significant public interest by increasing transparency

of Medicare,” CMS Principal Deputy Administrator Jonathan Blum noted in a letter to the American Medical Association about his agency’s decision.

Credit is due to our colleagues at Dow Jones, who used more limited physician data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act to uncover physician conflicts of interest, unnecessary surgeries and other Medicare abuses in a series of Wall Street Journal articles during 2010 and 2011. Dow Jones and others sued for wider disclosure, which led to Judge Howard’s ruling. Legislation proposed by Sens. Ron

Wyden, D-Ore., and Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, also contributed to the pressure for greater openness.

The Obama administration’s decision should accomplish most of the Wyden-Grassley bill’s goal – without great new expenditures of public money.

To the contrary, taxpayers should reap considerable savings, once journalists and others start mining the data for patterns of questionable billing.

Indeed, the very existence of this powerful new form of public scrutiny could be a powerful deterrent against waste and abuse.

Alyssa Brandt followed her lead to put the Upstate Eight Conference River Division matchup away.

The lesson from North’s 4-0 victory certainly sounded familiar. Players won’t mind, though, if those words enjoy a long shelf life.

“They were definitely scrappy, but if you have a team that’s willing to work that extra effort to get the goal, then that’s really nice,” said Brandt, a senior forward/ midfielder. “I feel like it represents our program with our willingness to do whatever it takes to get that last touch, get that final finish to get the goal.”

Pohl tangled with Bulldogs goalkeeper Lauren Suhi on a ball high in the 18-yard box to strike home her first score – the eventual winner – with 27:53 remaining in the first half.

Her second goal was a nifty redirect of an Brandt cross from the left flank just before intermission.

Playing for the first time since March 27, North (3-1, 2-0 UEC River) kept pushing with its regulars for much of the second half, and eventually cheered a pair of goals 6:02 apart midway through the period.

Brandt delivered the final tally with a free kick that resulted from a defensive foul deep in the attacking third.

North coach Ruth Vostal called only the third goal – when Brandt played a slot ball from the end line to a waiting Taylor Sypien – something the team had been working on.

“Unfortunate,” Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco said, “but the game is on goals, not on how you looked when you were playing”

“We’re just too inconsistent right now. That’s our big obstacle. We’re a very inexperienced but maybe it will turn out good with all of the game experience we’re going to get coming up.”

Johnsen lamented that his young team will only have two practices over the next week to work on its lack of communication and experience, which were both on display Monday.

Geneva closed the day with a 21-25, 25-13, 25-19 victory against Oswego in the silver bracket consolation match. Competing for the gold bracket consolation title on an adjacent fieldhouse court, St. Charles North finished fourth after a 25-19, 25-10 loss to Schaumburg.

GENEVA – A quick glance at the St. Francis boys volleyball roster reveals one enormous advantage – experience.

Twelve of the Spartans’ 13 players are seniors, with the only exception being junior libero Jon Messa.

That experience was on full display Monday night as St. Francis cruised past Geneva, 25-14, 25-13, to improve to 2-0. The Spartans played with abandon, pulling away in each game to help coach Mike Lynch earn his 400th career victory.

At the center of St. Francis’ senior-laden lineup is hitter and Loyola Chicago recruit Jeff Jendryk and senior Robert Smith. St. Francis’ three-option offensive attack netted Smith 22 assists with Jendryk on the receiving end of many of those sets.

Lynch was unsure what the Spartans were going to do, having to wait nearly two weeks between matches. Jendryk’s 10 kills and seven blocks helped Lynch reach the victory milestone and realize he has a special group of players.

“They get sick of practicing and want to be playing games after the layoff,” Lynch said.

“The kids were ready to go.

When the ball is there, we can run a lot of options. We ran a lot more system tonight where we had all three hitters as an option tonight. That’s a credit to our passers that all three hitters can be an option.”

Game 1 was nip and tuck in the early going, with Geneva (4-5) hanging tough at 10-10 after an unforced St. Francis error. That forced a Spartans timeout, and the response was immediate, with St. Francis finishing the game on a 15-4 run.

The Vikings only managed one kill in the second half of the game as the Spartans got kills from Jendryk, Smith and Joseph Denny to pull away.

Jendryk’s enormous kill that thudded off a would-be Geneva blocker’s head started an onslaught of ferocious play from St. Francis in Game 2. An inadvertent bounce popped the ball up right in front of the St. Francis side of the net and Jendryk took advtantage, smashing a spike nearly straight down.

Geneva Park District gains ground The Geneva Park District is set to welcome the Shodeen family’s donation of the Mill Creek Swim Club, a move that fills a handful of community needs.

The club – which features a 25-meter, five-lane lap pool along with a toddler pool, playground and club facility – provides more aquatic programming space and the option for earlier open swim times, augmenting the Park District’s Sunset Pool.

Located at 39W125 S. Mill Creek Drive in Geneva, the Mill Creek pool is expected to operate from mid-June through mid-August. Sunset Pool opens May 24, with the season ending after Labor Day weekend.

“We envision a west side swimming location that focuses on aquatic programming and rental opportuni-

ties with the same focus on safety we have achieved at Sunset Pool,” Geneva Park District executive director Sheavoun Lambillotte wrote in an email.

Acting on behalf of the Shodeen family, Paul Ruby, general manager of Shodeen’s Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva, presented the donation, Lambillotte wrote.

Kaneland dominated the Royals the entire 80 minutes in a 3-0 nonconference victory.

“We’ve lost to them a lot in the regional championship, so this year we really wanted to beat them so we could set the tone for the beginning of the season,” said senior Brittany Olson, who scored all three Kaneland goals. “We played pretty well as a team, communicated, knocked the ball around and we were able to

A corner kick by Madison Jurcenko set up Kaneland’s third goal at the 20:35 mark of the second half. Rosary (03) goalkeeper Lauren Fransca deflected the attempt, the Knights gained control of the ball in front of the net and Olson booted it in.

Frasca, a senior, had 14 saves.

“Lauren does a fantastic job. She keeps us in the game and keeps everything going,” Rosary coach Brian Frank

said. “She’s one of our few seniors and a team captain.”

An earlier second-half goal by the Knights was disallowed by an offside call.

Kaneland (1-1) missed an opportunity to increase its lead to 4-0 when it was unable to score on a penalty kick with 19:28 left in the game. Jurcenko’s shot went to right of the post.

“We knocked in three and we probably should have had more,” Parillo said. “We missed the PK and had another one called back because of offsides, but we had another three or four scoring opportunities.”

Most of the match’s action took place on Rosary’s side of the pitch as the team was unable to get any offense going.

“We lost nine seniors to graduation. Over half our starting lineup is brand new,” Frank said. “We had a lot of great individual efforts, but we need to work better as a team.”

“That’s our style, maintaining possession of the ball,” Parillo said. “Eventually, we’ll find weaknesses in the defense, get a few cracks at the goal and put a couple of them in. That worked for us today.”

Ultimately, the team left for home knowing the best way to move past the match was to break out today against Elgin.

“We’ve got some work to do. We’ve got some girls who are in a very fragile state right now, you know, especially after this loss right here,” Gianfrancesco said. “This is a character builder right here, because I don’t think it was a 4-0 game. It’s a character

builder. I know they’re disappointed. I don’t think they thought they played very well, but right now we’ve got to get back on the horse.”

North is eager to get a consistent stream of matches on the schedule, too.

The team will aim for a 3-0 start in league play with today’s visit to Larkin before hosting Wheaton Warrenville South on Thursday and beginning the weeklong Pepsi Tournament on Saturday.

Legislation on IHSA endorsed by state House

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com A House resolution seeking more transparency from the IHSA continued to gain traction Monday when legislators called a roll call vote to allow State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia to conduct public hearings on the matter.

House representatives voted 55-51 to allow Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora) to conduct the hearings, which will likely take place this summer.

Because of its nonprofit status, the IHSA is not required to answer to state officials the way public companies are.

Last week, IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said Chapa LaVia’s resolution amounted to a “takeover,” suggesting that the legislator is attempting to have the Illinois Board of Education take over the IHSA’s duties.

On Monday, Chapa LaVia re-iterated that’s not the case.

“I said it on the House floor. ... It’s not my intention

to remove the IHSA from what it’s doing right now and putting it under ISBE,” Chapa LaVia said in a phone interview. “That’s not my intent and I said that on the House floor a couple of times. ... I will not be doing that.”

“I just want accountability and transparency.”

But opponents to HR 895 question if transferring the IHSA’s duties isn’t Chapa LaVia’s goal, why would language included in the resolution suggest otherwise? The resolution states that the public hearings would consider “the feasibility of statutorily transferring the duties and functions” to ISBE. On Monday, Chapa LaVia said the language was included to give her – as the chairwoman of the elementary and secondary education committee – a reason to look into the matter.

On Monday, IHSA officials released a statement, stating that the resolution has “unfairly cast the association in a negative light.”

It was not until the 18th century that glassblowers were able to make bottles with narrow necks that made airtight storage possible. The best seal for the bottle was a cork, and when the English began to bottle wine in the 1700s they also invented a corkscrew to open the bottle. At first, corks were removed with an existing tool used to clean muskets. But soon other types of openers were invented.

Early corkscrews were usually T-shaped devices that pulled the cork. It is said that the first patented corkscrews were made in England in 1795, France in 1828 and the United States in 1860. There are many types of corkscrews. The singlelever corkscrew and the double-wingedlever corkscrew, patented in 1930, both screwed into the cork. Raising and lowering the lever removed the cork. Hundreds of other clever designs can be found, so collecting is a challenge. By the 1970s, collectors could find books and clubs for corkscrew enthusiasts. A corkscrew collector is called a “helixophile.” Prices have been going up during the past 20 years as the supply of old, unusual corkscrews gets smaller and interest grows in wine and its necessary accessories. A figural brass corkscrew named “Hootch-Owl,” patented in 1936, sold for $1,725 in February 2014 at a Jeffrey S. Johansson says her life parallels that of her character in ‘Under the Skin’

By CHRISTOPHER KOMPANEK Special To The Washington Post NEW YORK – “The character itself is not really what drew me in,” Scarlett Johansson confesses of her latest role.

The starlet plays an otherworldly creature sent to Earth to possess young men’s souls in “Under the Skin,” Jonathan Glazer’s existentially dystopic new film.

It was the opportunity to work with Glazer, who hasn’t made a film since 2004’s “Birth,” that was the main draw.

Loosely based on Michel Faber’s sci-fi novel of the same name, the script went through many changes from when Johansson first read it.

“The themes of the film weren’t as epic as I think they feel now,” she recalls of the initial story, which paired a male counterpart with her character and had them immersing themselves in a small town’s culture as they carry out their dark assignment. Once the setting was changed to Glasgow, Scotland, and focused on her character’s emerging identity, the emotional arc of her creature became clearer.

“It took me several weeks of shooting to figure out what I was playing. I think it was impossible to get a handle on that character without having like three weeks of footage under our belt. Just to know, what has she experienced? What’s her reaction?” Johansson says inquisitively from a couch in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. She is dressed in a black pantsuit with a multicolored blouse, possesses a casual and piercing beauty and seems far older than her 29 years would otherwise suggest.

“I think the idea of self, especially as I get older – I think I’m not afraid to ask myself questions about my true self,” she says. “I think when you get older you start to get curious about yourself in a different way, not just how can I get what I want?” – she laughs before continuing – “But more of the existential questions of what do I like? Why does this bother me? What don’t I like about myself that I’m afraid to admit? Or, where are my strengths and weaknesses, and why does it make me uncomfortable to acknowledge them?”

Scarlett Johannson stars in “Under the Skin.” quite similar to the ones her creature begins to ask herself as she witnesses a range of human experiences. On her journey, she watches, emotionless, as a family drowns in the ocean. Later, she feels pity for one of her victims and lets him go. Finally, she experiences, if not love, a tenderness that gives her a clearer view of earthlings. Johansson often uses the word “meditative” to describe the experience of playing this creature.

“Staying in a sort of meditative state of keeping a really clear and present mind, that challenge was really intriguing, but it wasn’t until I was in production that I realized that would be a possibility.”

Emptying herself so that she sees each experience fresh, without any memory reference, was a challenge she relished and one necessary for realizing Glazer’s vision. “I really connected with the idea of looking at the world through alien eyes,” Glazer says. “That was the spark.”

During filming, improvisation was key. Johansson and Glazer found inspiration outside the script.

“Two weeks before we were wrapping production in Scotland, Jonathan came in with dark circles under his eyes, as usual, and said, ‘I thought of this great idea where you could drive around and pick up actual people,’” Johansson says.

She was horrified by the idea at the time.

It didn’t seem safe and she hated the idea of not being in control.

“I guess that’s how life works,” she says with a sly smile.

The more she drove, the more confident she became, though she was uncomfortable with the hidden camera aspect. “They always make me anxious. I don’t like knowing what might happen or if someone’s going to be embarrassed.”

That fear, which Glazer shared, acted as the driving force for authenticity. Johansson wasn’t recognized on the streets of Glasgow, but she has also pulled off incognito moments in her home city of New York.

“One thing I’ve realized from being recognizable, for lack of a better word ... it’s only when you start to be sneaky or self-aware that people recognize you,” she says. “I remember this Christmas going to Macy’s and going ornament shopping. No problem. The place was packed and the busier they are, nobody notices. People don’t look at each other normally,” she says.

Sense of self fascinates Johansson, who announced in March that she is expecting her first child. She admits she is more inclined these days to pick up “The Jungle Book” over the philosophy books that captivated her in her earlier adult years.

“I don’t know if it’s about trying to return to something I never experienced or something nostalgic that I remember. ... Maybe that’s part of discovering your identity. Returning to the things you loved as a child.”

As for playing otherworldly characters, the process for Johansson is the same.

“Once that crack becomes a fissure and then a crevasse – that first thrill of the identity [the creature’s] discovering [in ‘Under the Skin’], looking at it now, is very similar to the thrill Samantha has in ‘Her.’ There’s a similar hunger there to experience, and that is something that can be applied across the board no matter what species you’re playing.”

When conversing with acquaintances, the subject often turns to family, and I will say that my mother “passed away” when I was young. Most of the time they proceed to ask me how she died.

I’m not a prude, and I understand that most men change in private booths, shielded from view of strangers. Still, I am

Today some stores have unisex dressing rooms, and men’s and women’s departments employ both male and female sales associates. It is not unusual

for couples to shop together – and if something doesn’t fit, for the spouse to go and find something in the correct size.

Dear Abby: I’m a 46-year-old female cancer survivor. My hair used to be long, thick and naturally wavy. Because of the high-dose chemotherapy and radiation to treat my lymphoma, I lost all my hair. It has grown back, but it’s thin, spotty and ugly.

Recently, I started wearing a wig. I get lots of compliments on the cut and color. My question is, when people ask who my stylist is, I’m not sure how to answer.

Protect your skin to prevent future sun damage Dear Doctor K: I’m in my 60s and already have a lot of wrinkles.

What can a dermatologist do for me that will make a difference but not be hugely expensive?

Dear Reader: Age isn’t kind to skin. Years of sun exposure leave their mark in the form of fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Kenneth Arndt, clinical professor of dermatology at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He assured me that some of the damage can be reversed.

The first step is to slow the pace of further damage. Do this by staying out of the sun and by wearing adequate sun protection whenever you are outside. Completely cover exposed skin using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. And wear sun-protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

If you think this sounds like preaching, at least I practice what I preach. I was raised in Los Angeles and spent nearly every weekend of my life from the ages of 3 to 19 at the beach – without sunscreen. Most of the time I had a “healthy tan.” Like many people in Southern California, I looked “simply maahvelous.”

The reason is simple. The past damage has made my skin even more vulnerable to cancer from new sun damage.

Besides protecting yourself from the sun, to minimize existing wrinkles and age spots, consider dermal fillers and neuromodulators.

Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) are injections that relax the muscles that create the appearance of wrinkles when you smile, frown or laugh. These products diminish frown lines and forehead lines and sometimes crow’s feet.

Dermal fillers are injections that plump up sagging areas of skin. Dermal fillers are often used to soften the “laugh lines” that run from the side of the nose down to the mouth.

Often the two treatments are used together to enhance and prolong their effects. Both techniques

are safe, with few side effects.

To keep seeing results, however, you’ll need to return for repeat sessions.

You mentioned cost, and these treatments can be pricey. For example, Botox injections range from $300 to $700 per session. If this is out of your budget, consider these options: Chemical peels use chemicals such as glycolic acid to strip away the outer layer of damaged skin. A glycolic acid peel can cost as little as $80, but it needs to be repeated every few weeks or months to continue showing an effect.

Microdermabrasion uses tiny exfoliating crystals to buff off the top layer of skin and reveal the smoother surface below. Although the technique is different from a chemical peel, the results are similar. The cost is around $100.

In the past 40 years, we’ve learned a lot about how aging and lifestyle can damage skin, and about how to repair at least some of that damage. That’s made many of my patients very happy.

Girl says she plays sports better than most boys Dr. Wallace: Several months ago you stated in your column that boys and girls are not physically equal in sports because “males are generally bigger, stronger, faster, can jump farther and higher, and that is what athletics are all about.” Therefore, you believe that girls should not play on boys’ sports’ teams.

I can run faster, jump higher and throw a ball farther than most boys.

Why should I be denied the opportunity to compete with the best just because I wear a skirt? – Jessica, Atlanta, Ga. Dear Jessica: The main reason why I feel that females should not play on boys’ athletic teams is that it would also allow boys to play on girls’ teams. If this happened, it would be the beginning of the end for many female athletes who want to participate in high school athletics.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and a freshman at a community college. The guy I’m dating is 17 and a senior in high school. We have been dating for several months, and we both enjoy each other’s company a lot, but ever since we started dating I’ve been getting static from my friends and family for dating a younger guy.

Jeff has now been accepted and will be attending Cal State, Long Beach, in September. I’ll also be attending the same university, so I guess that will stop all the petty snide remarks about me “robbing the cradle.”

North’s raise to four spades shows a “weak freak” – a poor hand with, usually, at least five-card support and, typically, a singleton or void. This hand does not have a singleton, but four spades is the right response.

North has no clue how many tricks his side can win, but maybe the opponents are gin for four hearts. In these circumstances, just blaze away, being as troublesome to East-West as possible.

West has a tough opening lead. It could be right to cash the spade ace, then exit with a diamond and wait for four tricks with his four honor cards. Here, though, a club is the only start to give the defense a chance.

One of the most important defensive rules is that when playing third hand high, table the bottom of equally powerful cards. Here, East must play his club jack at trick one.

Let’s assume South takes this with his ace and leads a trump.

West wins with his ace and does ... what?

The first trick marked East with the club queen. So, West should continue with a low club to give East the lead. Then he should shift to the heart nine, which gives the defenders one spade, one club and two hearts to defeat the contract.
