Geneva grad part of team restoring Easter Island statues

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Easter Island’s 887 statues – called moai – are large and heavy, many of their head-on-torso figures carved in hardened volcanic ash.

But their size and longevity are no match for the corrosion being caused by lichens growing on the porous volcanic stone. The statues’ jeopardy prompted a recent restoration and conservation project, which included Mackenzie Fairchild, 19, a 2014 Geneva High School graduate.

In an email, Fairchild wrote that being part of the Easter Island project “was an incredible honor.”

“The moai are an absolutely sacred part of the island’s heritage and they play an iconic role in defining the island’s identity to the rest of the world,” Fairchild wrote.

“Working on one of Easter Island’s oldest moai statues was an incredible honor and a rare opportunity.”

She attends Marist Italy/ Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute of Florence, majoring in art restoration and conservation, said her father, Jeff Fairchild of Geneva. The Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute is sponsoring the restoration project under the leadership of Lorenzo Casamenti, a restoration professor there.

ter’s participation. “They don’t take those statues lightly on the island. They are very important. And to allow somebody to work on them is a huge thing. It’s done only in connection with the Chilean government.”

Jeff Fairchild said Casamenti and other restoration professionals in Italy came up with a chemical wash that kills the lichen with a follow-up chemical wash to prevent them from growing back.

“They let it sit overnight and come back over several days and clean off the dead stuff,” Jeff Fairchild said.

“It’s fragile stone. ... They work with dental equipment to pick off the dead stuff.”

In an email, Mackenzie Fairchild wrote she wore a hazmat suit while spraying the chemical treatment on the statue. The treatment kills the lichen, softens it and prevents it from returning.

The team wraps the treated statues in plastic wrap to hold the chemicals in.

The native Polynesian people of Easter Island, the Rapa Nui, also participated in the restoration work, MacKenzie Fairchild wrote.

“A special ceremony was held by the Rapa Nui people to allow us to work on the moai statue,” Mackenzie Fairchild wrote. “Working together with Professor Lorenzo Casamenti, as well as a team of Chilean/Rapa Nui people, was an incredible learning experience that I will always treasure.”

In an email, Carlotta Fuhs, supervisor of the Art History and Restoration Department at the Italian International Institute Lorenzo de’ Medici, emphasized the project’s importance.

“It has been considered most vital to save the sculptures from further deterioration, and this is why this project is so fundamental,” Fuhs wrote.

Elburn aims to boost sales tax to cover pension costs Officials no longer considering contracting out services to Kane County Sheriff’s Office

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village officials are moving ahead with plans to pursue boosting Elburn’s sales tax. Village President Dave Anderson embraced it Monday night as “the way to go to protect our police,” as well as increase funding to cover other costs in the village.

Trustees discussed the topic at Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting that followed the Elburn Village Board meeting. Officials went over information that stated they must seek approval from residents via a referendum.

Anderson said the earliest

that could be done would be in April 2016.

Board members said they would be in favor of looking into the issue and considering it.

A discussion in the village has been going on for the past few months about how to fund police pensions and still address other needs in Elburn, such as road repairs. Anderson has said the village had been struggling with the issue of the police pensions since voters in 2012 rejected a referendum proposal to crate a new property tax levy specifically to fund the pensions.

In February, Anderson brought up the possibility of the village contracting out its

police services through the Kane County Sheriff’s Office as a solution, but residents later packed a Village Board meeting, expressing their displeasure about the idea.

After that, Elburn considered a special election in November to reconsider creating the levy that had been defeated in 2012, but the cost of such an election – more than $64,000 – was considered to be too high. Trustee Craig Swan then proposed the village consider either an increased sales tax or vehicle stickers to address the issue.

Anderson on Monday thanked Swan for the suggestion. Trustees were provided with a comparison of Elburn’s

sales tax with that of nearby towns. The tax is at 7 percent for general merchandise, above Maple Park (6.25 percent), equal to Campton Hills, Bartlett and Montgomery (at 7 percent), and below Sugar Grove (8 percent), Batavia (8 percent), Geneva (7.5 percent) and St. Charles (8 percent). In qualifying food and drugs, Elburn is at 1.75 percent, in line with most others. The vehicle tax of 7 percent was equal to most, less than Warrenville (7.25 percent) and higher than Yorkville (6.25 percent).

Anderson said the idea might be to ultimately, and gradually, raise the tax for general merchandise to 8 percent.

“We have some room,” Anderson said. “We’re not the lowest, but we are right at it. … We are not the longest by a long way.”

Anderson said it would be important to talk to local retailers, although he added “it does not cost them.”

“They are the clearinghouses,” he said.

Anderson indicated this would be the preferred solution to covering the cost of police pensions, and it would be unlikely that there would be further talk about contracting police services out to the sheriff’s office. Anderson said he believed increasing the tax would cover the cost of the police pensions.

Batavia aldermen approve third extension for Walgreens project Project to get underway by this summer

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting approved a third extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as Batavia Enterprises works out more details on the project.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Plans are to demolish the former Swanson’s Hardware store/Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. to make way for the project.

As part of the new extension, Batavia Enterprises would have to submit an application for the demolition of the building by July 1, and/or demolish the building by Aug. 1, or the city could terminate the agree-

ment.

Under the previous extension aldermen approved, Batavia Enterprises would have had to start on the project by May 1 or the city could terminate the agreement.

es Vice-President Austin Dempsey previously had told aldermen the reorganization of the Walgreens corporation has slowed the project. But he said the project continues to move forward.

Demolition of the building should be underway in the next 90 days, Dempsey had said.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza.

Batavia aldermen previously approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district.

avia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

In races for village president or trustees, aldermen, school, library, park boards and fire protection districts, winning candidates will directly affect everything from teacher contracts to road projects, public policies and public spending.

Kane County Chief Deputy Clerk of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said more than 5,200 people participated in early voting, surpassing the last consolidated election’s early voting, which was around 4,000.

In addition, more than 500 ballots mailed have not yet been returned, she said.

“Early voting throughout the county is 2.08 percent, and for a consolidated election, that is not bad,” Fahnestock said.

“There is significant interest in this election, with several questions on the ballot. People will be out voting on Election Day, [and] I’m very happy about that because we work really hard to put an election together.”

Among the more high-profile races, voters in Campton Hills will be choosing a village president, three trustees and a clerk.

Incumbent village President Patsy Smith, with Mike Turgeon and Don Sheluga for trustee and Stephany Impson for clerk, are running as writein candidates. Trustee candidate Steven Galloway, a Smith ally, is on the ballot.

Trustee Harry Blecker is running for village president, and trustees Susan George and Laura Andersen are seeking re-election. Newcomer Michael O’Dwyer is running for trustee, and Nicholas Girka is running for clerk.

In terms of processing write-in ballots, Fahnestock said voters write in electronically. Judges will look at the write-ins and will determine the correct candidate and correct office – and make sure the write-in isn’t a name like Mickey Mouse, she said.

The correct candidate, correct office and name have to match, she said.

“I’m expecting things to go well and not take too long before we start reporting results,” Fahnestock said.

In Lily Lake, incumbent village President Jesse Heffernan is facing challenger Mike Carlson. In Kaneville, five trustee hopefuls are vying for three four-year seats – incumbents Howard Christopher, Myra Ottoson and Paul Ross – who are facing challengers David Kovach and Delbert Ward.

In Geneva, Patrick Lenski and Tara Burghart are vying for a seat in the 1st Ward.

James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton are vying to serve the 4th Ward.

In Batavia, voters in the 1st Ward will choose between incumbent Carl Fischer – who was appointed last October

– and challenger Carl Dinwiddie.

In St. Charles, voters will choose aldermen in the 3rd and 4th wards. Incumbent 3rd Ward Alderman Todd Bancroft is facing challenger Naomi Bosko. Bancroft was appointed in 2013 to fill a vacancy.

Newcomers Matthew Dowling and Steven Gaugel are facing off for alderman in St. Charles’ 4th Ward.

In North Aurora, voters will choose three for village trustee from a field of five. Incumbents Mark Guethle, Laura Curtis and Mark Carroll are facing challengers Allen Cavender and Anise Hesson. Carroll was appointed to the board last May. In Elburn, incumbents David Gualdoni and William Grabarek are facing challengers John Krukoff and Michael Rullman for three seats.

While cities and villages may generate a lot of interest, no other local taxing body influences a property tax bill as heavily as public school districts.

In Kaneland District 302, eight candidates are vying for four seats. Incumbents Tony

Valente, Peter Lopatin, Gale Pavlak and Teresa Witt are facing challengers Dan Nagel, Jerry Elliott, Ryan Kerry and Pamela Voorhees.

In St. Charles District 303, nine are vying for three seats.

They are incumbents Kathleen Hewell, Nicholas Manheim and Judith McConnell, who are facing challengers Lori Linkimer, Rick Leidig, Lowell Yarusso, Stephen Bruesewitz, Michael Vyzral and Jennifer Ann Reeder. Linkimer and Vyzral are both former board members.

Seven are seeking three seats on the Geneva District 304 Board. They are incumbents Kelly Nowak, Mary Stith and Michael McCormick, facing challengers Taylor Egan, Evelyn Schneider, Tina Yagla and Ann Murtaugh.

Eight hopefuls are seeking three four-year terms on the Batavia District 101 Board.

Incumbents are Cathy Dremel and Melanie Impastato.

They are facing six challengers – Ron Rechenmacher, Michelle Olache, William Gabriel, John Dryden, Christopher Lowe and Ellen Knautz.

In addition, voters through-

out the area will be asked to select trustees to serve on two community college boards.

Three are vying for two seats on the Elgin Community College District 509 Board. Incumbents Donna Redmer and Bob Getz are facing challenger Jeffrey Meyer for two six-year terms.

The contest for two seats on the Waubonsee Community College 516 Board is between incumbent Rebecca Oliver and challengers Patrick Kelsey, Emmett Bonfield and Jimmie Delgado.

And voters will select those to represent them in township governments, park districts, fire protection districts and library districts.

Voters in the Messenger Public Library District of North Aurora have a choice of three trustees for two two-year terms, with incumbents Dominick Leo and William Middleton facing challenger James Hicks.

Six hopefuls also are seeking three four-year seats on the Messenger board. Three incumbents – Mary Beth Hutches, Justin Kline and Mark Saperston – are being challenged by Corinn Sparks, Paul Rodenback and Eric Brumbaugh.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – A fire that damaged a home and two cars in Campton Township on Saturday morning remains under investigation, fire officials said.

There was one minor injury reported from the incident, which fire crews first received at 8:47 a.m. Saturday as a report of a fire in an attached garage.

The residence is in the 5N800 block of Timber Trail in Campton Township, according to a news release from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

the home, the release states.

There also were two cars on fire in the driveway, according to the release. The residents already were out of the home at the time of the first call.

Daniela Saracco said her husband heard “two cracks and a boom” before they saw flames coming from the home. The Saraccos live west of the home that caught fire.

Firefighters had to bring in tankers for rural water supply operations since there were no fire hydrants in the

area. The fire was extinguished in about 50 minutes, according to the release.

A total of 11 fire departments assisted with the fire, and several of them remained on the scene to do an extensive overhaul of the damaged property.

The home was a total loss, Elburn Fire Lt. Greg Algrim said in a phone interview.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents from the home, the release states.

“It’s undetermined at this point,” Algrim said of the exact location where the fire started.

The fire departments that assisted the district were Batavia, Burlington, Fox River and Countryside, Geneva, Kaneville, Maple Park, Pingree Grove, St. Charles, South Elgin and Sugar Grove.

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District is seeking a rate increase to pay higher wages, buy more equipment, maintain two firehouses and be able to set aside money if officials establish a third firehouse at Crane and Bolcum roads in St. Charles Township.

The ballot question asks if the tax extension limitation if

the extension limitation should “be increased from the lesser of 5 percent or the percentage increase in the consumer price index over the prior levy year to 12.5 percent for each of the levy years of 2015, 2016, 2017,

2018 and 2019.”

The St. Charles Park District is seeking voter permission to issue $28 million in bonds to build a recreation center, one or more turf fields and acquire land, among other

developments.

And Aurora West District 129 is seeking issue $84.2 million in building bonds to pay for building projects throughout the district, including at two North Aurora schools.

Route 47 railroad crossing to be closed

White pelicans spotted at forest preserve

ELBURN – The railroad crossing on Route 47 in Elburn will be closed for more than a week as Union Pacific officials perform maintenance on the tracks.

The crossing is scheduled to be closed from 8 a.m.

Wednesday through 5 p.m.

April 16.

The village’s First Street crossing, which is a block east of Route 47, will remain open.

According to a Union Pacific notice posted on Elburn’s website, “this scheduled maintenance is necessary in ensuring uninterrupted services across our line.”

BATAVIA – Those at the Forest Preserve District of Kane County have said they spotted American white pelicans last week at Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Forest preserve district staff spotted the large white birds in the Nelson Lake marsh section of the preserve, according to a news release.

The birds typically stay for two to three weeks before heading north, the release stated.

CHARLES – St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet praised the actions of a neighbor who helped minimize the effects of a fire that broke out Sunday afternoon at 522 Longmeadow Circle in St. Charles.

Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $10,000 in damage. No one was injured in the fire, which is not considered to be suspicious, Schelstreet said.

At 3:19 p.m., the fire department responded to the scene.

attempted to control the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrived, he said.

“He kept the fire from spreading,” Schelstreet said.

“It could have been much worse.”

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by Batavia and Geneva fire departments. The Elburn Fire Department provided coverage while St. Charles units were working on the fire.

City Council adopts fiscal 2015-16 budget “The [city] budget is balanced, as continues our practice for the last few fiscal years.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved the city’s next annual budget, which includes a projected fourth consecutive surplus in the city’s general fund, officials said.

Aldermen voted, 10-0, in favor of the city’s proposed fiscal 2015-16 budget. Chris Minick, the city’s finance director, presented the budget during a public hearing Monday immediately before the City Council’s regular meeting.

“The [city] budget is balanced, as continues our practice for the last few fiscal years,” Minick said during the hearing.

Excluding transfers, Minick said the proposed 2015-16 city budget will have projected expenditures of $150.1 million and revenues of slightly more than $150 million.

There have been three consecutive surpluses in the city’s general fund, and a fourth surplus is projected for fiscal 2015, Minick said.

During the Government Operations Committee meeting held later Monday night, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said he plans to head to Springfield to make clear that the state should not transfer its problems to municipalities.

City Administrator Mark Koenen after the Monday meetings said he and Rogina will make the downstate trip later this month with various members of the Metro West Council of Government, which represents 34 municipalities in Kane, DeKalb and Kendall counties.

If there is one word lifestyle experts and doctors agree defines the best approach to achieving a long and healthy life, it’s “active.” The act of doing something -- anything -- that can get a body up and about, out and around is nearly as important as what that activity may be. No one, after all, is going to achieve optimal fitness by sitting on the couch all day.

The exhilaration of working out to traditional Latin dance rhythms through Zumba, a fast-paced, dance-based class, makes for a heart-racing, calorie-burning, body-energizing hour of fun and fitness.

Team sports such as pickleball and softball combine the body’s need for physical movement with the heart’s desire for friendship and camaraderie. And for the person who prefers to go it alone, the park district’s extensive network of hiking and biking trails offers the perfect environment for building the body while feeding the soul.

Being informed about getting and staying in shape is also part of a healthy lifestyle, and the park district provides Wellness Workshops that cover such important topics as depression, Alzheimer’s detection, smoking cessation and weight loss.

Offered at low- or no-cost, these various fitness programs and wellness classes ensure that the tools for achieving a healthy lifestyle are available for all. ‘One last hurrah’

“It felt like Ireland – it felt like home,” said Hopkins, a former resident of County Mayo in the West Region of Ireland.

Hopkins on Saturday celebrated his 50th birthday at McNally’s with his family, including his sister and brotherin-law visiting from Ireland.

He said he will continue to visit the bar when it no longer is McNally’s because he supports local businesses.

Geneva resident Vicki Mueller also intends to check out the bar after it is converted into Valley Lodge Tavern.

Like McGuire, Mueller met some of her current friends at the former McNally’s location. McGuire invited them on Facebook to have “one last hurrah” at the pub on Saturday.

“It’s just sad that there won’t be a McNally’s in St. Charles,” Mueller said.

“There’s just so many memories.”

McGuire was one of many people who packed McNally’s, 109 W. Main St., St. Charles, on Saturday, which was the last day the bar was open under that name.

After more than 16 years of business, the Irish pub will be converted into Valley Lodge Tavern, an upscale business with two other locations in Wilmette and Glenview, said McNally’s and Valley Lodge Tavern owner Bill Stavrou in an earlier interview.

McGuire said he will continue to visit the bar after it relaunches later this month because his sister and girlfriend both work there as bartenders.

On Saturday, McGuire was joined by one of his friends, Patrick Flahaven, who he met at the previous McNally’s location, 201 E. Main St., St. Charles, currently the site of The Office Dining & Spirits.

K. Hollis Jewelers celebrating 10 years in Batavia Event planned for Saturday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Karen and Rob Hollis, owners of K. Hollis Jewelers in Batavia, hope those who walk in the door will be longtime customers.

“Our goal is to build relationships,” Karen Hollis said.

“We want to make a customer for life.”

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, the store will celebrate its 10th anniversary at 147 S. Randall Road in Batavia. The event will feature raffle priz-

es every hour, along with food and refreshments.

They opened the store April 5, 2005. K. Hollis Jewelers is in the Windmill shopping center near Jewel-Osco. Information is available at the store’s website, www.khollisjewelers. com.

The celebration will take place on the same day as the Hollises will celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary.

Rob Hollis is the first to admit he doesn’t like shopping in jewelry stores.

“I just wanted to create a different atmosphere and shopping experience,” he said.

The store has grown. In 2012, the store more than doubled in size, from 1,800 square feet to 4,100 square feet.

Roan was one of a group of local youngsters selected to be on Legoland Discovery Center Chicago’s Creative Crew after submitting what their ideal Lego workplace would look like. Roan was 4 when he submitted his winning entry. Two St. Charles brothers – Rowan Sather, 6, and Evan Sather, 8, both of St. Charles – also were picked to be on the Creative Crew for their winning submissions.

The youngsters will get to meet with Lego Master Model Builder David Howard. Additionally, they will get VIP access to Legoland Discovery Center Chicago events and a family pass to the center in Schaumburg.

“My son has been obsessed with Legos since I can remember,” said Roan’s mother, Kristen Peyton. “We just thought it would be fun for him and a good opportunity because he’s been into Legos for so long. We’ve been getting him Legos probably since he was 3.”

Roan’s submission features different Lego rainbow birds. A Lego tubenator is one of the objects featured in Rowan’s drawing.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR COLLEGE SAVINGS PLANS INVEST IN OUR FUTURE, ECONOMY To the Editor: The treasurer is the state of Illinois’ chief investment officer. We invest in people to address today’s challenges and the challenges we will face years from now.

Saving for higher education is critical to bringing opportunities for our children and strengthening our economy.

Many families use Illinois’ Bright Directions college savings plans to invest in their children’s education beyond high school. These plans are critical to raising wages and living conditions for everyone because educational attainment is the best predictor of employability. As Illinois’ treasurer, managing these programs is one of my most important responsibilities. Today, Congress is considering an update to these 529 plans. As a certified public finance officer, and as a parent, I support this effort.

Critics contend these plans needlessly offer a tax advantage to wealthy families who already can afford higher education. While many welloff families participate in the programs, the solution is not to restrict the program. Rather, it is to introduce these college savings plans to middle-class families who fear a college education for their children is increasingly out of reach. Anyone with $25 can open a plan: a parent, guardian, grandparent, aunt, uncle,

brother, sister or friend. Monthly deposits are not required. Opening a college savings account with the treasurer’s office represents a commitment to make college or trade school accessible for someone you love. You can open one today at www.illinoistreasurer.gov.

Investing in our children pays dividends for them and for our economy. Success in college or trade school opens doors because our children learn the skills, discipline and reliability that employers demand. The proposal before the U.S. Senate would expand qualified expenditures beyond tuition to include education-related technology, such as computers; roll back unnecessary paperwork; and allow refunds from school to be redeposited into the 529 accounts. These reasonable changes will make college more attainable for our children, grow our economy and attract good-paying jobs to Illinois.

As treasurer, my job is to put our state and our families in a position to succeed. The 529 plan updates do exactly that. I understand the critics’ concerns, but do not believe they outweigh the benefits to our families who dream of sending their children to college, nor to our small-business owners who need a skilled workforce. I hope our lawmakers agree.

‘Big energy problem’ dooms Vikings

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com WHEATON – Three different times in the third and deciding game against St. Francis on Monday night, the Geneva boys volleyball team made a big kill and seemed to be ready to make a run.

However, all three times the Vikings committed a service error to turn the ball – and momentum – back over to the Spartans, who topped Geneva, 24-26, 25-19 , 25-15 in the nonconference match.

“It is hard to build momentum if we are not getting anything going from the service line. That is our first line of offense,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “It is really tough when you are not doing that. It’s a momentum killer.”

Outside hitter Nick Buseski led Geneva with seven kills, including four in the final game.

Fellow outside hitter Luke Will and middle blocker Sam Wulfkuhle both added five kills.

Buseski said the match was a

“We had a big energy problem this game,” Buseski said.

“I don’t know what our mentality was. Maybe it was coming off of spring break, but we just couldn’t get anything going.

In Games 2 and 3, Geneva fell behind by double digits. Facing game point in the second game, the Vikings rattled off seven straight points before St. Francis setter Timmy Pisarki ended the set with a kill.

The Spartans (2-0) won 15 of the first 20 points in the third game. Geneva never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, as the Spartans cruised to

the game and match victory.

“Against good teams, it is hard to come back seven or eight points,” Buseski said.

“You just can’t do that against good teams.”

Geneva setter David Franz led the Vikings with 19 assists.

Both libero Ethan Roesch and defensive specialist Josh Haston were all over the floor for Geneva, with each recording nine digs.

Seitelman said she was happy with the effort from the Vikings (6-5) in the first game.

“I thought we did a nice job fighting and competing in that first set, battling point for point,” Seitelman said. “[St. Francis] got on a big run in the second set. … We made a great service run at the end of the second set, but we are down 10 points before that kicked in.”

Seitelman said she wants to see a more complete effort from her squad.

“It is still early in the season,” she said. “We need to be consistent. Not for one set, but the entire match.”

When teammates ask Sanchez for advice, he tells them to know their strengths as a hitter. Being versatile is important, as well. Sanchez has fun hitting when he’s worked a pitcher into a count where a strike must be thrown.

But, he also relishes the chance to keep an at-bat alive by grinding out pitch after pitch.

“Hitters have to know their zone,” Sanchez said. “You’ve got to know what you can do with pitches in and out of the zone. If a pitch is one or two two balls off the black of home plate, off the outside corner, and can’t be hit, you can’t put a home run swing on it. It’s got to be a swing that fouls that pitch off. My plan is to foul off the pitcher’s pitch on the black and get another one I can put in play.”

Situational awareness takes years for a hitter to master.

Prep baseball players have roughly three months to crack the code pitchers use to get outs. It is why Marmion senior shortstop Edgar Sanchez digs into the batter’s box with two simple things: confidence and a plan.

“I want to get into great hitter’s counts and be a pitcher’s worst nightmare,” Sanchez said. “If I get a pitch I can’t hit, then I want to scratch and claw and get on base any way I can.

It doesn’t matter how hard the pitcher is throwing. They could be rushing it up at 92 miles per

“There’s no need to swing at a curveball early in the count, even if it is going to be a strike.

“In practice, we’ve talked more about approach at the plate. We’ve focused on what hitters should be thinking when they face certain counts.

Just putting the ball in play can be important. We don’t have to feel the pressure of hitting a double in every at bat.”

Because of his varsity experience, Sanchez has grown comfortable hitting in any count. In his first at-bat, Sanchez wants to see as many pitches as possible. It increases the odds he will eventually see a pitch he wants to drive.

It also increases pitch counts and allows Cadets’ teammates a chance to see an opponent’s repertoire.

If it ever resurfaced, the sixth-grader at North Aurora’s Jewel Middle School keeps quite the conversation piece hanging over the family’s mantel.

In all, 37 medals dangle from Long’s traveling display rack, a structure that routinely shoulders added weight as the 11-year-old keeps excelling at wrestling.

Long has collected each honor in the past two years, and most recently gained distinction as USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle 85-pound national champion in Kids Division II. She earned that medal March 29 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but, through everything, hasn’t changed her refrain about the sport.

“In practice, I love the challenge. You have to work for it and stuff,” Long said.

“And I just like the feeling of being able to wrestle.”

Long’s father, Steve, a former Batavia wrestler, grins about being able to attest to that last part.

When Taylin Long was at Goodwin Elementary, she remembers her physical education teacher mentioning a wrestling club.

It wasn’t that sequence that surprised Steve Long, accustomed to his daughter’s energy and wide-ranging interest, but the events that immediately transpired.

“So I called the coach,” Steve Long said. “I remember him clearly saying, ‘You’ve got nothing to worry about. We want her on the team.’ He said she’ll be just fine. So I said OK. And that was two years ago. Here we are now, national champ.”

On the plane ride home from Oklahoma, Steve Long mentioned something about his daughter’s title to a flight attendant, prompting a midair announcement.

Taylin Long won each of her three bouts at nationals and was unscored upon, duplicating her feat during state competition in Yorkville in mid-March.

In her past 21 matches against girls, she is 20-1 with eight falls and a 103-16 scoring advantage.

Long more often faces boys in her line of work,

pending the division. As her dad recalls, she once pinned a young man in 22 seconds, not taking kindly to his prebout scoffing as the athletes checked in at the officials’ table.

“Boys or girls, they’re just my opponent,” Taylin Long said. “I don’t really care if it’s a boy or a girl. I just want to win.”

Fifteen of Long’s medals award first-place finishes, and each item on the rack is for folkstyle wrestling, a discipline that puts a premium on controlling an opponent from the bottom.

On Monday, Long was set to begin her first extensive freestyle training at Batavia’s Dawg House Wrestling Club, emphasizing tactics for controlling an opponent above the waist.

That’s why she avoided bacon at Sunday’s Easter brunch and only allowed herself a few Reese’s peanut butter eggs.

“I usually can just run it off and work it off,” Long said. “If I’m over [weight] between tournaments, I’ll go put on a few sweatshirts.”

At her most recent tournament, Long received early overtures from three colleges, she and her dad said.

A diligent Jewel student, Long already seems averse to the distractions of her peers.

“She’s going to be something,” Steve Long said.

“She works very hard, too.

She comes home from school and most kids go to their computer or TV. She comes home, puts her jogging suit on and runs around the block 10 times.”

Ultimately, that routine paved the way toward nationals.

“It’s an expensive trip, but she wanted her national title, and I knew she could do it,” Steve Long said. “So the money was – we’ll catch up, I guess. I mean, you only

get a chance to be a national champ so many times in life.”

Jake Ludwig was much more than a bystander when he visited the Roosevelt University men’s basketball program two weeks ago.

Before committing to the Lakers of the NAIA, as he did this past weekend, the St. Charles North senior guard showcased his talent on the floor.

“Open gym. Full thing,” Ludwig said Monday. “They really welcomed me to the family.

The guys and the coaches made it easier” to choose.

Ludwig said he also weighed an opportunity with Lake Forest College, but Roosevelt’s location and reputation ultimately were bigger draws.

“I’m going to be in downtown Chicago on Michigan Avenue playing basketball and receiving a good education,” Ludwig said. “Plus, the coaches and guys, I really bonded with on my visit.”

Ludwig averaged team highs in points (16.1), assists (5.1) and steals (2.0) as a senior. He credited North coach Tom Poulin for his guidance through the recruiting process.

“I did all the summer camps, so I’ve looked up to coach Poulin since third grade,” Ludwig said.

Puzzle jugs that trick bar patrons can be traced back to the 15th century or even earlier. By the middle of the 17th century, puzzle jugs large enough to hold about two cups of beer were made by many pottery companies in England. Almost all had decorations related to drinking, plus unusual cut-out designs and a rounded rim with protruding spouts. There often was a poem that encouraged a bet with a drinker to test if he could drink without spilling.

The idea persists. George Ohr, the early 1900s pottery genius from Biloxi, Mississippi, made small puzzle mugs that held just one cup of beer. Early puzzle jugs from Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and Doulton, as well as 19th century jugs from Cambrian Pottery, Swansea, Sunderland, Ridgway and others, all relied on the same puzzle.

Of course the pierced holes made it impossible to tip the jug without spilling liquid, but to win the wager, you had to drink the contents of the jug. It was a simple trick.

The rounded rim had one hollow spout that was used as a straw to suck the drink thru the hollow handle. It led to the inside and the contents of the jug. Smart bar patrons should not have been fooled twice. Today, there are copies of early jugs that sell for

I started dating a woman a year ago, “Anita,” who told me that if she never had kids, she could live with it. I felt lucky to have found someone who would be OK with no kids.

I have had a few issues with Anita. When she gets upset from time to time, she says that if she stays with me, she will never have kids. I know she cares for me deeply, but I also believe she feels conflicted about giving up the chance to be a mother.

‘Bad luck’ is a questionable explanation for cancer Dear Doctor K: I thought cancer was the result of risky behaviors like smoking and spending too much time in the sun. But then I read an article about cancer and bad luck. So, which is it – behaviors or luck?

Dear Reader: I know the article you are referring to, and I wasn’t very happy with the way it was presented by the media. Let me start with the bottom line: Cancer is caused by our genes, and by our lifestyle (risky behaviors) and environment. It’s not just one or the other.

Sometimes genes that we inherit from our parents cause cancer.

An example is the BRCA1 gene that causes some cases of breast cancer.

Many cancer-causing genetic changes, however, occur after we are born. Sometimes, risky behaviors produce changes in our genes. An example is how cigarette smoke affects certain genes in the lungs and other organs to cause cancer.

Factors in the environment that may or may not be influenced by our behavior can cause cancer.

Examples are cancers of the uterus (cervix), liver and stomach caused by various viruses and bacteria.

Or skin cancers as the result of

The study you refer to involved a complex analysis of cancers and stem cells in multiple different organs. Each of our organs has its own stem cells. Organ stem cells are there to replace older cells in the organ when those older cells die. Stem cells divide frequently.

The study was asking whether some cancers occur simply because an organ’s stem cells divide frequently. That could cause cancer because each time a cell divides, there is a risk of developing genetic changes (“bad luck”). If so, organs that have the most frequently dividing stem cells might have the greatest risk of cancer.

That’s what the researchers found. And they estimated that about two-thirds of all cancers might result from such bad luck.

In my opinion, the authors’ conclusion that bad luck accounts for most cancers is questionable on two grounds. First, we know that the rates of some cancers (like skin cancer, or nose and throat

cancer) are a hundred times more common in some parts of the world than others. That implies a huge effect of the environment.

Second, using the phrase “bad luck” implies that there is nothing to be done about random cancer-causing genetic changes.

That may be true currently, but it is entirely possible that a deeper understanding of the biology of cancer will reveal ways to reduce the risk of such random changes.

I think it’s unwise to say that most cancer is caused by bad luck – particularly when the argument is quite speculative. That’s because it could discourage us from pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and from getting cancer screening tests that can catch cancers at a curable stage. (I’ve put a table of recommended cancer screening tests on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

We can control our fate, though not completely. That’s true of minimizing our risk of cancer, as well. Cancer is not just a matter of bad luck.

Dr. Wallace: Our family is going to visit relatives in Memphis, Tennessee, during Easter vacation. My dad’s family lives there, and one of his sisters has an adopted daughter who is an epileptic.

Our family has never met her, so we don’t know what to expect.

How serious is epilepsy?

Can you enlighten our family with regard to how we should act if my cousin has a seizure while we are visiting? – Nameless, Brunswick, Georgia Dear Nameless: More than two million citizens in the United States and Canada have epilepsy, but so much ignorance is attached to this disorder that its victims often suffer from unnecessary cruelty. Medical science has learned enough about the disease that with proper medical care, 80 percent of those who have it can lead normal lives.

Epilepsy is usually the result of a brain injury occurring during pregnancy or delivery. If as few as seven of the 120 billion nerve cells in the brain malfunction at the same time, a seizure can result.

While there is no known cure for epilepsy, 20 different drugs can be used to prevent or lessen the severity of seizures so that half of all patients enjoy total seizure control.

If someone near you has a seizure, keep calm.

The person is seldom in pain or danger. You can’t stop a seizure, so don’t try to hold down or restrain the individual.

It’s a good idea to clear any hard objects out of the way. Don’t force any object between

Dr. Wallace: Ryan and I had been dating for over a year. He was my first love. Lately, he has started hanging around with his friends and ignoring me. If I don’t see him for a couple of weeks, I usually call him.

Then last week I found out he gave a gold chain I gave him for his birthday to another girl.

I cry myself to sleep at night thinking about him.

Today I was surprised to get a letter from him. In it he told me he was very sorry and that he loved me.

He also told me that he was being held in jail for a crime that he didn’t commit. I’m not sure what to think about all this. Common sense and card sense will do a lot to make the pilgrimage of a bridge deal not too difficult. What would a declarer with those characteristics do on this deal? He is in four hearts, and West leads the spade jack, which is covered by dummy’s queen and East’s king.

South’s three-heart rebid shows at least a six-card suit and game-invitational values; typically, he will have 15-17 high-card points. Yes, this hand is a maximum, but if partner has an unhelpful holding, game will probably fail. North, of course, is happy to raise to four hearts.

When you are in a suit contract and have more trumps than the dummy, count the losers in your hand. Here, South has four: one spade, two diamonds and one club.

Then declarer should count winners. Interestingly, he has 10: one spade, six hearts, one diamond and two clubs. So he can make his contract as long as the defenders do not get their four tricks first.

There is only one way for South to eliminate a loser: discard it on the third round of diamonds.

Also, because dummy is so short of entries, there isn’t a moment to lose. Declarer must win the first trick (or East might shift to a trump) and lead a diamond. A defender may win, cash a spade trick, and play a trump, but South wins with dummy’s 10 and leads another diamond. Then, when back in the dummy with the heart ace, he pitches his club two on the diamond queen.
