OUT AND ABOUT Sixty Men Who Cook at county fairgrounds ST. CHARLES – Sixty local celebrities will demonstrate their cooking skills when the Geneva Chamber of Commerce presents the 60 Men Who Cook. This is the sixth year for the event that benefits Geneva History Center, Geneva Lions Club and Rotary Club of Geneva. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. Egg Hunt at Persinger Recreation Center GENEVA – The Geneva Park District’s free annual egg hunt is set for 10 a.m. Saturday outside the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

The Easter Bunny will scatter more than 5,000 eggs in two age specific areas – one for children ages 4 and under, and one for children ages 5 and up. The hunt takes place, rain or shine. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and arrive early as parking may be limited. This year’s hunt is sponsored by Corner Bakery Café, Epic Air, and Geneva Bank & Trust. There will be a pancake breakfast before or after the event, featuring Breakfast with the Easter Bunny inside the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center. Event encourages girls, moms to be super

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Pink balloons outside the Sugar Grove Community Center on Sunday marked the location of the Empowering Girls to Be Super event, but the color for the day was really leopard.

Leopard-print scarves draped from girls’ necks – and, when worn as a cape, their shoulders – throughout the two-hour, mother-daughter event that promoted empowerment and what it means to be super.

It was hosted by PEAK for Kids in partnership with the Kindness Campaign, a community collaboration inspired by Knights Against Bullying.

Before proceeding with such activities as yoga, face painting and karaoke, the event started with author Amy Logan reading her book that features a certain leopard-print accessory, “A Girl With A Cape.”

The book has a universal message about the importance of kindness and challenging readers to do good.

Logan said she wrote the book because more people – whether they are 5 or 105 – need to know how amazing they are. She purposely didn’t give the title character a name so readers would feel like it was written about and for them, she said.

“She’s every girl,” Logan said.

That cape-clad girl learns that she can make a difference through kind words and kind actions.

It ends with a question Logan asked her audience: “Tell me, sweet darling, what next will you do?”

The girls’ responses touched on manners, kind words, respect and family.

Jenna Heller of Sugar Grove attended the event with her daughters, ages 8 and 4. She described Logan as motivational and had praise for the book as well, calling it “excellent.”

PEAK founder Renee Dee said this first mother-daughter event won’t be the last.

“I am so happy,” she said as the moms participated in a discussion with Logan while their daughters did yoga. “We had an amazing turnout.”

Gov. Pat Quinn spoke briefly about the deadly tornadoes the state experienced in 2012 and 2013, as well as drought and flooding. Quinn also serves on President Barack Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience to advise his administration on how the federal government can respond to the needs of communities dealing with the impact of climate change.

“We’ve had such severe weather in the last year in Illinois,” Quinn said to a crowd of nearly 1,000 people in Fermi’s Ramsey Auditorium.

“Last April, we had the flood all across our state. We never saw anything like it in the history of Illinois since 1818.

Then the killer tornado in November.”

Quinn told of going to the town of Washington and four other central Illinois communities that were hard hit by severe tornadoes.

“It took lives, and in 12 seconds in Washington, Ill., it destroyed more than a thousand homes,” Quinn said. “I think it was a blessing that we have the kind of advance predictions and advice and using social media in particular. It saved lives, clearly, last November. Because folks got the warning ahead of time that

BATAVIA – When a tornado tears through a town and demolishes every building in sight, the funnel cloud and its trail of destruction is clear to the naked eye.

But when a computing data network uses a supercomputer the size of two football fields to collect the data and digitize its images, scientists learn more about what creates and sustains these destructive storms – and helps predict them.

WGN chief meteorologist Tom Skilling hosted two presentations from various scientists and meteorologists Saturday at Fermilab during the 34th Tom Skilling a n n u a l t o r - WGN chief nado and se- meteorologist vere weather seminar, which included the effects of climate change on weather.

“Climate change – it’s real,” Skilling said. “It’s happening.”

Donna Cox, leader of the Laboratory National Center for Supercomputing Applications Advanced Visualization, discussed the University of Illinois’ supercomputer, Blue Waters. Cox said Blue Waters is the fastest supercomputer of any university and the 10th fastest in the world.

A professor of art and design, Cox works with scientists to visualize their data.

“Most people do not know that numerical models permeate their everyday lives, from cars to airplanes to the very financial and economic models that forecast our economy,” Cox said. “We have worked with Argonne National Laboratories to visualize a … model of traffic in downtown Chicago and how to reroute traffic during severe storms.”

She said scientists use the supercomputer as a digital laboratory to study many as-

Quinn recounted how the early warning system allowed the evacuation of 60,000 people from the seats at Soldier Field.

“His teacher told him when you hear those sirens, you have to get cover, get down in the basement,” Quinn said.

“So when he heard the sirens in Washington, Ill., he told his mom, ‘You’ve got to come down now, mom. You have to get to safety right away.’

She said, ‘In a minute or two, honey.’ He said, ‘Right away, mom.’ ” She listened to her son, and within a second or two after she went into the basement, their entire house was blown apart by a tornado.

“Severe weather is something we all have to deal with,” Quinn said. “Climate change is something we don’t look the other way on. ... All of us have to understand that this is something that is the challenge of our time. This is something we have to work on together. ... We’re Americans.

We solve problems. We don’t ignore problems.”

Quinn is running for re-election and facing a Republican challenge from candidate Bruce Rauner, a wealthy North Shore businessman.

However, Quinn’s appearance at the Fermi event is not a stop on his re-election campaign, a Fermi spokesman said.

Skilling and WGN, who organize the Tornado and Severe Storm Seminar at Fermilab every year, invited Quinn and his appearance was set up through Quinn’s office staff, not his campaign staff, the spokesman said.

The Vikings’ seventh-place finish in the 12-team West Aurora Invitational certainly offered encouragement about things to come.

“Definitely exciting,” Geneva senior libero Brandon Navigato said. “We’ve been ready for this for awhile. We’ve gone through a lot. … We’ve gotten ready, gotten down to business over these last couple weeks of practice and we’re ready to roll for conference.”

Geneva closed the day with a 21-25, 25-13, 25-19 victory against Oswego in the silver bracket consolation match.

Competing for the gold bracket consolation title on an adjacent fieldhouse court, St. Charles North finished fourth after a 25-19, 25-10 loss to Schaumburg.

Eight days removed from pushing Schaumburg in a three-set road loss, North (3-3) shuffled its lineup in this match.

After graduating the bulk of last year’s IHSA third-place state tournament finisher, any experience for the newbies is valuable currency.

“I played a little outside, I played a little right side, I played everywhere,” varsity newcomer Jack Kolodziej said.

“I got a taste for varsity, and I think it’s going to really help us as a team going on and moving forward.”

North played without senior setter Jeff Rollins, who has spent spring break in Germany with the SCN Jazz Workshop. A violinist and trombonist accepted into the University of Illinois’ music program this week, Rollins’ presence lends harmony in his more physically exerting extracurricular, too.

“Really, with the setter, it’s like your quarterback,” North Stars coach Todd Weimer said. “Who will you do better with: Jay Cutler or the backup? I would think Cutler, right?”

Ben Connor and Johnny Davern filled in at the position as their coach ultimately looked at the more sunny side of Rollins’ absence – which extends into today’s and Tuesday’s road matches against Maine South and Neuqua Valley, respectively.

“We’re young and we’re improving,” Weimer said, “but you’d rather see these mistakes being made now than later or during regionals.”

“Rachel pitched a great game out there,” Dierks said.

“We have a lot of respect for Burlington and for her to shut them down – it was a great day for her.”

Gaylord, who took the loss, also went the distance. The senior struck out seven batters and gave up six hits.

GENEVA – A seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored the winning run for the Geneva softball team in a 3-2 come-from-behind win against Burlington Central on Saturday.

Molly Wren’s grounder that eluded both Kristen Ahler and Tori Hervey, Central’s third baseman and shortstop, enabled Anna Geary to score from third base for the nonconference victory.

The Vikings (2-0), who had not advanced a runner to scoring position since the third inning, started their last at bat trailing, 2-0. Up to that point, Central’s Brooke Gaylord effectively shut down Geneva’s offense, scattering four singles and walking just two.

Rachel Fanella, Geneva’s starting pitcher, opened the inning with a single. After pinch hitter Emily Plocinski grounded out, Haley Orwig, batting for Madison Keith, coaxed a third walk out of Gaylord.

Geary then smacked a 3-1 pitch over the head of Rockets left fielder Cortni Neubauer for a double, the only extra base hit of the game, plating Fanella and advancing Keith, who was running for Orwig, to third. Geary, a junior, was 3 for 4 at the plate, collecting two singles in addition to her double.

“I wasn’t expecting anything in particular on that pitch. I was just hoping to put it in play,” Geary said.

Rylie Porretto followed with a grounder to Ahler, who opted for the forceout on the batter. Porretto beat the throw, Keith scored the tying run and Geary advanced to third.

After Kaitlyn Plocinski grounded to first base for the second out, Wrenn came to bat and connected for the winning hit.

“The leadoff single by Rachel to get the inning started was a big deal,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “To get Anna up with a couple of runners on was important. She’s had a couple of good swings and she got a hold of a good one.”

Dear Abby: My 1-year-old baby recently passed away.

I have two other children, one with special needs. I find it irritating and not at all comforting when people tell me that “at least I have other children and that I should concentrate on them.”

How can I politely tell them that I have never stopped taking care of my other children, and that nothing eases the pain of burying your child? – Mourning My Baby In Puerto Rico Dear Mourning: Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your child. My heart goes out to you.

While I can imagine that you might be tempted to lash out at these insensitive individuals, I hope you realize their comments are made out of ignorance. Sometimes it isn’t what you say as much as how you say it.

In a case like this, exactly what you have written to me would be an appropriate response as long as it is said calmly and without anger.

Dear Abby: My daughter was married for eight years before divorcing her cheating husband. They have two children. When my daughter found out about the affair, she was inconsolable.

The girlfriend actually phoned her and said, “Why are you so upset? Everyone cheats!”

Now, two years later, the girlfriend is pregnant. My daughter would like a paternity test done before the kids are introduced to this new child. She thinks it would be harmful if they are introduced to a new half-sibling who may later prove to belong to another man.
